Suppliers Appointed to Fusion21’s £800 Million Construction Works & Improvements Framework

BRICK NUMBERS BUILDING Latest figures from the Office for National Statistics show domestic brick manufacturing continuing to rise steadily further, easing any concerns over product shortages.

Production numbers for February show a 2.8% rise over the same month in 2018, with the quarterly production numbers up 6%.

The Brick Development Association’s Tom Farmer observed: “The last calendar year has seen the brick industry ploughing millions into manufacturing production and we see the results in a steadily increasing output.

“We know that our members are taking a long term view of UK housing and are investing with confidence that the demand for new homes continues to outstrip supply by a considerable margin.

There is only one way out of that situation and that’s to build more houses.

National procurement organisation Fusion21 has announced the suppliers successfully appointed to its national Construction Works & Improvements Framework - worth up to £800 Million, over a four year period.

A total of 45 highly skilled firms – including 50% SMEs – have secured a place on the framework which has been developed to deliver capital works programmes with lots specific to housing, education, healthcare and the wider public sector.

Going live to the market on Monday 1st April, the framework offers a range of internal and external refurbishment and improvement works through to the building of additional structures -and will support housing providers, local authorities, educational institutions and healthcare organisations to deliver regeneration programmes, modernisation and upgrade works, plus construction of all building types.

Fusion21 provides procurement services to the public sector - fully compliant with EU, UK and Scottish legislation - and is committed to making a difference in communities across the UK. To date the firm has saved its members more than £197 million through the procurement process, created more than 5,500 jobs and generated £78 million of social value.

“We are confident that current and future governments will continue to view housing as a top priority in domestic politics and our manufacturers are working to ensure that brick availability will not be an issue.”

The BDA’s upbeat assessment of future housing demand is bullish given a flatlining in new housebuilding. Figures from the Ministry of Housing for the last quarter of 2018 show housing starts down 2% on the same period a year before with NHBC figures for February showing an even more marked 7% decrease in registrations over February 2018.

“There is no doubt that political uncertainty is affecting private sector activity” continues Farmer. “However, the market for affordable homes remains strong and we anticipate that once some degree of political clarity returns, we will see renewed energy in the housing sector.”

If people are serious about selling, they should market their properties now to beat the rush of supply. However, they do need to be realistic about the price - nothing has changed in terms of affordability. Buyers haven’t suddenly got bigger salaries and

they still must contend with the tighter lending criteria imposed by the CML. Sellers who are prepared to price their properties sensibly will get offers. For example, we marketed three properties last week at 15-20% lower than the original price – within 48 hours we had multiple offers. There’s activity out there but only at the right price.

Revealed: The Industries That Voted For And Against Brexit With the decision on Brexit looming, a new study has found which industries had the highest percentage of leave voters as well as the least. Construction and law enforcement & security topped the list of industries wanting Brexit, whilst the healthcare and transport & logistics industries were the least receptive to leave the European Union.

Concerns about whether healthcare would remain free and how the trade and retail industries would be affected are the top reasons industries voted against Brexit, whilst others voted for it as they felt the country needed a change and EU regulations are too lenient.

The team behind wmblogistics conducted the research as part of a study into how Brexit may affect the transport and logistics industry, amongst many others.

Over 5,000 UK residents aged 18 and over, all of whom stated that they were in full time employment and which industry they worked in, were quizzed about their attitudes towards Brexit.

Upon being asked if they’d voted for Brexit, the top industries whereby employees voted for Brexit were found to be: 1. Construction - 71% (voted leave) 2. Law enforcement and security - 65% 3. Finance and banking - 64% 4. Environment and agriculture - 62% 5. Marketing - 54% Likewise, the industries with the least amount of staff that voted for Brexit were found to be: 1. Healthcare - 10%

Likewise, asked why they had voted for Brexit, those in construction felt the country needed a new direction (58%) and those in law enforcement & security felt the laws and rules set in place by being in the EU were too lenient (62%).

When asked if they felt differently about their vote in the lead up to Brexit being finalised, 37% of those who voted for Brexit felt they’d made the wrong decision, compared to just 12% of those who voted to remain, who now feel they should have voted to leave.

5. Education - 19%

A spokesperson for wmblogistics made the following comment: “While the decision of Brexit is, apparently, only a few weeks away, the country is still very much split and there doesn’t seem to be any clear indication of what is to come.

Asked why they hadn’t voted for Brexit, those in the healthcare industry were most worried about the future of the NHS and free healthcare (79%) whilst those in the transport and logistics industry were more worried about how it would affect trade and retail (80%).

“The transport and logistics industry wants a peaceful resolution that still allows for free movement; our lorry drivers regularly drive around Europe, collecting and delivering, and we don’t want our industry, the retail industry, and many others to be affected by a negative or no deal outcome.

Government backs ACE Future of Consultancy campaign The UK Research & Innovation Council (UKRI) has formally recognised the ACE Future of Consultancy campaign, with a pledge to collaborate with and sponsor it as part of the Construction Sector Deal’s Transforming Construction programme.

The two-year multi-phased campaign will help the entire consultancy and engineering sector not only adapt to, but welcome, a new era of design and delivery in the built environment.

UKRI has agreed to contribute to the project and will provide additional support throughout the campaign by sharing its expertise and knowledge.

The first phase will scope new areas of opportunity, identify and explore new business models for consultancy, and analyse the sector’s changing needs in terms of skills.

The second will implement the findings from phase one and focus on developing sustainable businesses delivering different services using different business models, and piloting tomorrow’s training, apprenticeship schemes, and contracts.

Working in partnership with members, industry stakeholders and clients from the private and public sectors, the Future of Consultancy will build on existing initiatives and research to deliver tangible outputs in assessing the addressable markets for new technology and future consultancy services. It also aims to deliver training and contracts to help ACE members and the wider industry seize

the opportunities offered by technological advances in digital technology, offsite construction, big data and AI. To enable this change, the programme will provide industry-wide consensus on consultancy business models, as well as skills profiles and training requirements for the sector.

ACE’s sister organisation, the Environmental Industries Commission, which represents environmental consultancies and other sustainability businesses, will also contribute to the campaign, receiving UKRI support for research into the innovation required by the environmental sector to deliver the Government’s 25 Year Environment Plan.

Hannah Vickers, Chief Executive of ACE said: “We are delighted that UKRI has recognised the benefits that our Future of Consultancy campaign will have helping consultancy firms invest wisely and aligning the clients’ efforts with the Transforming Construction Programme to focus on the areas of greatest opportunity.

“We’ve taken stock of the various initiatives happening around us, including the Industrial Strategy, changes to the regulation of the industry as a result of the Hackitt Review and Project 13, and want to work with consultancy firms to develop an industry-wide vision to review and prioritise potential future opportunities in the UK and Export markets lie, and then to implement a programme to develop the capability to deliver the change.”

ACE has a variety of research projects in the pipeline which will draw together the best of existing research into a workable and deliverable programme for consultancy businesses. The long-running Consultancy & Engineering Awards also offers the opportunity to collate best practice case studies to inform the research and showcase what the future of the industry looks like.

The organisation has planned a number of other regional, national and online opportunities to meet and contribute to the debate including the Digital Leadership Conference and the inaugural Future of Consultancy Conference, both being held in June. These conferences will give delegates the opportunity to debate and discuss, and for ACE to reveal the outputs of research to date.

BRIGGS & FORRESTER SECURE KING’S CROSS RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT WITH MCLAREN CONSTRUCTION Briggs & Forrester Living have secured the design and build, mechanical, electrical and public health contract with McLaren Construction at Argent’s King’s Cross R3 residential development in London.

Known as ‘Luma’, this prestigious project is part of the King’s Cross masterplan, transforming the area into London’s new creative quarter.

Architecturally designed by Squire and Partners with interiors by Conran and Partners, the building will consist of 61 apartments over two blocks of eight and eleven stories. Living’s services will include heating distribution, chilled water, smoke ventilation, underfloor heating, sprinklers, mains distribution, IT and home automation.

The project will commence this year and is due to finish Q2 2020.

GLEEDS TO COST MANAGE REMAKING OF HISTORIC CLANDON PARK International property and construction consultancy Gleeds has been appointed by the National Trust to cost manage the complex restoration of Clandon Park, a Grade I listed Palladian mansion in West Clandon, near Guildford, Surrey.

The historic building was ravaged by fire in April 2015 and an intensive salvage phase followed, which involved making the building safe as well as windproof and watertight before archaeologists could begin meticulously sifting through the debris to recover and catalogue surviving collection and architectural elements. Detailed specialist surveys and investigations have been ongoing since the fire, including the undertaking of laser survey work and the completion of a conservation plan.

Gleeds’ heritage cost management team has now been brought on board to support the National Trust as it embarks on the massive task of reconstructing the site. It will be joining a world class consultant team assembled by the Trust in undertaking a comprehensive feasibility study before construction begins and providing strategic advice throughout - balancing time, quality, cost and risk to ensure the most efficient delivery of the project.

YORKSHIRE HOUSING’S BIGGEST EVER DEVELOPMENT UNDER WAY Construction is under way on 270 homes with a combined value of £55m in North Yorkshire as part of Yorkshire Housing’s biggest ever development.

Planning approval was granted late last year, allowing construction to commence on site in Sherburn-In-Elmet. The scheme includes properties ranging from one to five bedrooms on a 25-acre site to be

called Hodgson’s Gate. Yorkshire Housing worked with Sheffield architects MHA and contractor Countryside Properties on the flagship scheme – which is situated to the east of Hodgson’s Lane in the North Yorkshire town.

The development, which will see high quality homes built in a £55m investment, is set to be finished by April 2022. It will contain on completion 95 properties for sale, 23 for private rent, 58 for affordable rent, 32 for rent to buy and 62 for shared ownership.

ISG WINS £47 MILLION KENSINGTON MIXED-USE DEVELOPMENT ISG has secured a £47 million project to create high-quality commercial office and retail space at 127 Kensington High Street – the former site of the renowned Pontings Department Store. The building was acquired in February 2019 by AshbyCapital, the property investment advisory company, from Columbia Threadneedle Investments.

The project sees ISG retain part of the existing structure on site, and construct two additional floors to double the current volume of office space on site and create a new elevation using an attractive pale white brick and Portland stone to provide a contemporary and architecturally sympathetic addition to this important London thoroughfare.

Designed by Pilbrow & Partners, the new building creates 12,081 sqm of Grade A

commercial office space, incorporates ground level retail areas and restores the historic street line on the adjacent Wrights Lane. A new retail arcade will improve connectivity to Kensington High Street Underground station from Wrights Lane. Built on the site of the former Pontings department store, which closed in 1970, the new development will significantly improve the surrounding public realm to ensure the continuation of the thriving retail trade on this part of the high street.

The new mixed-use development will provide high-quality office accommodation with improved accessibility and flexible floorplates.

The building will also feature generous external terraces and is targeting a BREEAM Excellent environmental performance rating.

Project News Willmott Dixon appointed for Wolverhampton regeneration Midlands-based Willmott Dixon has been appointed to deliver a £34 million contract that will see 266 new homes built for WV Living, the Local Housing Company, delivering new homes for the City of Wolverhampton Council.

The company is extending its strong regional track record to deliver The Marches, a combination of one, two, three and four-bedroom homes – 67 of which will be affordable – on the site of the former Wednesfield High School on Lakefield Road.

The company is teaming up with BM3 Architecture to create the new development, with work starting on site shortly so that the first homes are ready to welcome residents in late 2019.

Established in 2016 with a mission is “to design and build homes you will love”, this will be the largest of WV Living’s first phase sites and plays a crucial role in their aspiration to build over 1,000 new homes over the next four years that assist with regeneration in Wolverhampton by providing good quality new homes in Wolverhampton.

Simon Liversage, director at Willmott Dixon, said: “We have delivered over £200 million of projects in the Midlands in recent years and our team are looking forward to working with WV Living to

develop houses and apartments that bring much-needed new places to live for the people of Wolverhampton. NEW WATERSIDE HOMES ON THE WAY IN MOIRA CONSTRUCTION has begun on Swing Bridge Wharf, an exclusive residential development in Moira by developer Wheatcroft Land under its new residential brand, Wheatcroft Homes.

The site of a former warehouse, located in the heart of the National Forest, will be turned into nine quality homes. The attractive redevelopment overlooks Ashby Canal and will include a mixture of three and four bedroom family homes including both semi-detached and detached properties.

Swing Bridge Wharf is due to be completed in time for residents to move into their new homes for Christmas 2019.

Interest in Swing Bridge Wharf has already been strong, even though we’re only just putting the first spade in the ground.

DEMOLITION TO KICK-START NEW HOUSING ESTATE The former warehouse facilities of Ridgeons building merchants on Cromwell Road, Cambridge will shortly be demolished, making way for a large new housing neighbourhood, as Cambridge City Council looks to increase council homes in the region.

Local construction firm Mick George Ltd will imminently complete the demolition works on behalf of Hill Partnerships Ltd. It is understood that Mick George Ltd have made considered efforts within the scope of the works to recycle much of the demolition materials for re-use, minimising traffic congestion within the area.

More than 200 new homes are set to be built, with as many as 90 allocated for Council accommodation. A mixture of apartment blocks and houses will be

created, alongside a park running through the centre of the site, car parking, a community building and access to the Chisholm Trail cycle route also.

The new homes will be developed by Cambridge Investment Partnership, which is an equal, 50:50 Limited Liability Partnership (LLP) between Cambridge City Council and Hill Investment Partnerships, set up to optimise the use of the council’s property through investment in residential, commercial, and other uses to achieve social and financial returns.

The 3.3-hectare former Ridgeon’s site will enable the council to take a big step towards delivering its programme to build 500 new council homes in five years, using the £70m funding secured in the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough

devolution deal, in addition to its own resources.

The development will include at least 40% of the new homes as social rented council homes, owned and managed by the council, and let to tenants on the housing needs register at rents no higher than the Local Housing Allowance.

Jones Homes invests £300,000 in Alsager Work is entering its final phase on a new homes development which has generated £300,000 of investment in Alsager.

Around 70 homes are now occupied at Jones Homes’ Barrington Park development off Dunnocksfold Road. Once complete, there will be 117 homes at the development.

Willmott Dixon Interiors provides funds for Thames Reach’s battle to end street homelessness What started as an idea to help homeless people in south London has led to a Camberwell-based charity receiving £24,470 to help their quest to give disadvantaged women better opportunities in life.

Willmott Dixon Interiors (WDI) initially teamed up with Thames Reach, based at Peckham Road, to support their ‘Moving In, Moving On’ programme to equip women who experience long-term unemployment and homelessness with practical skills and confidence to help them find employment.

Availability and price of land remains key factor to the future growth of the self-build market The latest Self Build market report from AMA Research, highlights the strong disconnect between the number of available sites and where people want to build.

The number of applications for self build projects in the Home Counties and the South West is relatively large when compared to the number of available sites.

In areas such as the Highlands, Northern Ireland and the North East, the number of sites available are notably higher when compared to the number of applications.

Throughout the UK, there are significant variations in the level of self build demand and available plots to facilitate this demand.

The significant growth in house

prices in the UK, has enabled mature self builders to self-fund their projects through a number of means by using their savings, revenue from property sales, remortgages or other types of loan. However, council planning systems are being viewed as one of the biggest constraints for self builders for allocation and granting planning permission for small sites.

Over the next 4 years, the future prospects for the self build market remain positive but relatively modest with self build volumes rising slowly. Our forecasting takes into consideration key drivers such as lack of consumer confidence due to the uncertain economy, continuous constraints in the planning process and a relatively constrained mortgage market.

It was the idea of Connor Lambourne, a building manager at WDI who, as part of a companywide trainee challenge, wanted to support ‘Moving In, Moving On’ by leading a team delivering skills training and mentoring to a group of women supported by the charity.

Connor’s project involved over ten women from Thames Reach learning important skills and making new contacts over a number of weeks as they helped Connor and his WDI team paint, decorate and generally improve Age UK’s Southwark and Lewisham Healthy Living Centre in Bermondsey to provide residents with a better place to socialise and make new friends.

The success of the project led to Connor winning Willmott Dixon’s national trainee challenge, which led to Thames Reach being the chosen charity when Willmott Dixon chief executive Rick Willmott led a senior management team in completing the gruelling Cyclotour du Léman, a cycling event in Switzerland where riders pedal 180km around Lake Léman on one day, starting and finishing in Zurich.

Nearly ten riders achieved the feat and in the process raised £24,470, with the money handed over this week by Connor to Thames Reach’s fundraising manager Catherine Hickey, who said: “We are extremely grateful to Willmott Dixon Interiors for their fantastic efforts in raising funds which will go towards supporting our employment and skills programmes at our Employment Academy in Camberwell. Our full range of courses and workshops enable people to get the skills and training they need to find employment or volunteer work.

“On behalf of Thames Reach, we’d like to say a huge thank you for taking part in this challenge and helping us work towards our vision of ending street homelessness.”

WDI is behind some iconic London projects like fitting-out a new home for the Design Museum and creating the London Screen Academy in north London to train future film directors.

The company has delivered over 200,000m² of new interior space in London over the last five years,

Jewel in Bristol’s recycling crown opens for business A new state-of-the-art Materials Recovering Facility (MRF) is now open in Bristol – and it’s set to be the jewel in Bristol’s recycling crown.

Fast-growing Bristol company ETM Recycling invested £4million in the impressive new Turmec facility, which is now the most efficient and effective plant in the South West processing construction and commercial waste.

A proud Amy McCormack, Director of ETM Recycling, said: “It seems like a long time ago when we put the wheels in motion for this, but since the build began at the start of the year it really gathered pace. To finally have it open and operational has been well worth the wait.”

The facility will double the amount of waste ETM have previously been able to handle and process at its Ashton Vale site to 150,000 tonnes and will process 80 tonnes per hour, an output that up until now ETM could only achieve in 24 hours.It also means ETM will have a zero waste to landfill plant, putting them at the forefront of the recycling industry.

“Landfills are closing in the area while waste is travelling further for residual disposal, and we want to

avoid sending our waste to landfill at all costs,” explained Amy. “Our old plant was at full capacity and was not efficiently processing and diverting enough waste from landfill.

“No one had the material and process knowledge of Turmec, and we didn’t believe any other plant could provide us with such excellent landfill diversion whilst still being efficient.”

Not only will the increased efficiency push ETM Recycling to future growth, but it will also benefit the city of Bristol too, allowing more of the city’s community and businesses to dispose of their waste.

Brian Thornton, CEO of Turmec, commented: “The configuration and layout is the most innovative that can be found anywhere in the South West of the UK. This is an amazing investment from a family business which shows nothing but commitment to their employees, their company, their clients and to Bristol. It cements their position as one of the largest and most dynamic waste processors in the south west and this is a landmark process that Bristol will benefit from.”

Australia’s construction industry will regain momentum driven by investments in transport infrastructure, says GlobalData The Australian construction industry, which contracted an estimated 2.8% in real terms in 2018, is expected to regain growth momentum and rise at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.73% during the forecast period (2019– 2023), supported by the government’s focus on development of transport and commercial infrastructure in the country, says GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

GlobalData’s report, ‘Construction in Australia - Key Trends and Opportunities

by State and Territory to 2023’ reveals that the industry’s output value in real terms is expected to increase from US$166.7bn in 2018 to US$190.7bn in 2023, measured at constant 2017 US dollar exchange rates.

Australia’s construction industry declined

from US$171.5bn in 2017 to US$166.7bn in 2018 due to a sharp drop in activity in the oil and gas sector as major oil and gas projects, which provided a spurt to the industry’s growth in 2017, were completed or are close to being completed. These included the multibillion Gorgon project and the Wheatstone and the Ichthys Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) projects.

Dhananjay Sharma, Construction Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “Australia’s construction industry is expected to recover and expand over the forecast period, driven by investments in transport infrastructure.”

Residential construction was the largest market in the Australian construction industry during the review period, accounting for 35.4% of its total value in

2018. However, the market is currently in decline, owing to an oversupply in major cities. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), the total number of dwelling units approved in the country decreased by 5.6% in 2018.

Sharma concludes: “Uncertainties with regard to monetary and wages policies, as well as political instabilities due to the upcoming federal election in May 2019 are expected to hold back the growth of the residential construction market in the near term. However, with the government planning to invest A$75bn (US$58.9bn) to develop the country’s transport infrastructure by 2027–2028, the sector is expected to regain growth momentum.

Commercial and industrial projects, and an improvement in consumer and investor confidence, will also provide support to the sector.”

How employers in construction can protect their staff’s mental health The construction industry takes great care in protecting staff from visible risks, ensuring all precautions are taken to maintain the physical wellbeing of its workers.

away from home for weeks at a time. Without a private, safe space to unwind, all the stresses of work add up and make it difficult to switch off.

Despite this, construction is still one of the most dangerous sectors to work in thanks to the big presence of a risk that isn’t visible: employee mental health.

The working environment — where speaking about emotional or mental issues has historically been stigmatized— is also to blame, as the ‘macho’ image of construction workers makes it difficult to talk about mental health.

“Safety is one of the biggest concerns in the construction industry,” says Daniel Ure from online PPE retailer Vizwear, “and since one of the biggest risks to workers in construction today is that posed by mental health problems, addressing them needs to be at the top of an employer’s list of priorities.

Unfortunately, there’s still a stigma around this topic, which causes too many people to keep their issues to themselves. This can lead to disastrous consequences, which is why it’s so important for employers to protect their staff.”

The state of mental health in construction In the UK, mental health issues lead to over 70 million sick days per year. Whether it’s anxiety, depression or stress, mental health causes more sick days than any other health condition and costs our economy between £70 billion and £100 billion each year.

However, struggles with mental health can have much more serious ramifications. — and in no other industry is that quite so evident as in construction.

Data from the Office of National Statistics found that between 2011 and 2015, the highest number of suicides were found in skilled construction workers. With over 1400 in-work suicides, this sector makes up over 13% of those recorded, despite construction only accounting for 7% of the UK workforce.

Construction News created a survey along with Mind Matters to identify any changes to mental health in construction between 20172018. Although 67% of respondents believe awareness has improved over this period, the results show no real improvement to mental health in the industry and that 81% believe there is still a stigma.

Why construction?

While mental health issues can affect anyone, men are particularly vulnerable. 76% of recorded suicides in the UK are committed by men, with suicide being the biggest cause of death in men under 35.

And with men making up 89% of the workforce, this is a particularly problematic issue for the construction industry.

Thankfully, there are a number of positive initiatives employers can take, as well as registered charities and support groups dedicated to the wellbeing of construction workers.

What are the signs?

Unlike physical injuries, mental health issues are difficult to spot and are often kept secret.

Thankfully, there are a few common telltale signs when someone is struggling with their mental health: • They find it difficult to problem-solve • They are easily distracted and are less productive than usual • They lack self-confidence • They are easily agitated and create conflict amongst co-workers • They feel easily overwhelmed • They are increasingly late or absent from work • They often isolate themselves from others What can employers do?

The best way for the construction industry to tackle the importance of employee mental health is from the top. Business owners and management need to implement the same safety standards they take towards physical health and safety and use them to safeguard mental health.

There are a number of steps that managers can take to create a positive work environment for their staff so that mental health can be comfortably addressed, rather than hidden away.

1. Create a supportive culture The first step for a manager is to evaluate the culture of their workforce to detect any potential pain points for staff. This can range from employee workloads to how staff communicate with each other throughout the business.

By putting their business under a microscope, managers can build a strong, supportive work culture from the ground up. This will help to establish mental wellbeing as a crucial value of the company, meaning open discussions about employee mental health will become the norm.

2. Educate employees By making education a priority, employers can help to remove the stigma of mental health and ensure their staff understand the negative impacts that can affect anyone.

This can range from providing easily accessible information for your staff to hiring third-party organisations, such as Mates in Mind, to come in for regular staff training days.

With a team of knowledgable employees, a company will find it easier to combat any dangers and empower their staff to support each other when facing difficulties with their mental health. Improving awareness creates more opportunities to spot early signs of coworkers struggling and creates an overall healthier workplace environment.

3. Be open and available Mental health is a private matter to many people, which makes it difficult to speak about openly. Without establishing a clear and open line of communication, it’s much more likely that workers will keep their troubles to themselves.

By letting employees know that they always have someone to talk to, they are much more likely to come out of their shell and identify any health problems like anxiety or depression early enough to put in place counteractive measures.

It can be difficult in construction as employees don’t often have a static working environment, so site managers should take it upon themselves to establish regular catch ups with staff to evaluate their wellbeing.

4. Be vigilant Tackling mental health takes a lot more than running a one-off seminar. Many mental health issues take time to be resolved, which means companies need to be aware of their staff’s needs all year round.

By continuing to offer training, guidance and support to their employees, mental health care will be embedded into a companies culture and will become a natural part of its safety protocol - not just ticking a box on a form.

5. Put a support system in place Spotting the early signs is important, yet employers also need to ensure they create a safety net for their staff. Companies need to make sure that helpful information is readily available for employees so that anyone struggling with their mental health knows where to turn to receive support through services like counselling and therapy.

Mental Health Feature Resources When it comes to protecting your employees’ mental health, there are a number of resources available for extra support.

As of January 2017, the Health in Construction Leadership Group (HCLG) established Mates in Mind, its own registered charity whose sole purpose is to raise awareness and provide support for the mental wellbeing of construction workers.

Mates in Mind have a goal to reach 75% of the construction industry by 2025 and offer training courses based on four key elements: Awareness & Education, Guidance & Support, Communication and Research & Development.

If you work in construction and need urgent help or support in regards to your mental health, there are also a number of confidential services and advice lines available: • Construction Industry Helpline 0345 605 1956 - Provided by the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity, the helpline advises on a range of matters including occupational health and wellbeing, support and

advice for people with stress The services can also provide emergency financial aid to the construction community in times of crisis.

• Mind 0300 123 393 - Provides advice and support to anyone experiencing a mental health problem • Samaritans 116 123 Confidential 24-hour support for people who are experiencing feelings of distress, despair or suicidal thoughts “Despite construction’s reputation for poor mental health, there are actually a lot of support systems in place to help protect the workers,” says Daniel from Vizwear.

“Communication is still the biggest obstacle between employees and management, which is why confidential advice lines are so important. By giving construction workers the opportunity to discuss their mental health in a supportive environment, they can take positive steps without the need to speak publicly. If more workers make use of these services, they will feel more comfortable speaking to their employers about their mental health, which is the first step to making real change in the industry.”

A home-building project that is using the latest modern methods of construction and aiming for ultralow energy usage among its 47 homes, is one of five case studies collaborating with the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) on its “Building for 2050” research project.

The homes currently under construction at Priors Hall Park in Corby use a unique combination of technologies to reduce energy use to such an extent, that they will be ultra-low energy users and, in some circumstances, may mean no energy bill at all for residents.

Electricity, heating and hot water are all generated by the homes themselves using a range of technologies, all optimised by a (discreet) smart home energy management system.

Project Etopia Group, the developer of the site, is working with Caplin Solar and the Carbon Free Group to bring together solar photovoltaic and thermal panel, heat pump, interseasonal heat storage and battery technologies to meet the new homes’ energy needs.

Those energy needs are also minimised in the first place as Project Etopia brings the very latest modular construction and design to create inexpensive, highly energy efficient homes.

Gleeds appointed on £17m custody suite for Nottinghamshire Police International property and construction consultancy Gleeds has been appointed as project manager, cost manager and mechanical & electrical advisor for Nottinghamshire Police’s new £17 million custody facility at The Old Gasworks, Radford Road.

The existing custody suite in the city centre has long fallen short of the force’s

operational needs and current Home Office standards, with accommodation and facilities spread over multiple floors making it difficult to monitor detainees.

Refurbishing the site was found to be a prohibitively expensive and impractical option, requiring an extended period of closure, and after extensive consideration a site on Radford Road was selected to replace it.

Designed to be fully accessible, the new state-of-the-art building will provide 50 modern cells in accordance with National Guidance, as well as a purpose built space for taking police photographs, fingerprints, and DNA samples. Meanwhile, the first floor will comprise a fully equipped office complex for staff use, allowing officers to

return to their public facing duties quickly.

Proposed plans incorporate sustainable building solutions and the latest technology in a bid to reduce the environmental impact of the build and improve its long-term performance.

Efficient infrastructure and associated services will allow Nottinghamshire Police to achieve savings on running costs, as well as ongoing maintenance and repairs.

Tom Shipman, Director of Gleeds in Nottingham with overall responsibility for the scheme, said: “Gleeds has a long standing relationship with Nottinghamshire Police and I am delighted that our previous work has been recognised through this appointment. The Old Gasworks has been vacant for a number of years and the site is ripe for redevelopment.

Following the approval of detailed plans, works on the new facility are expected to begin on site in 2020 with completion in 2021.

Mick George Ltd provide concrete foundations for world-class training centre Work to create one of Europe’s most advanced football training facilities is making progress, with Mick George Concrete the latest supplier contributing to the new Leicester City Football Club development.

The Company has secured a £1.2m agreement to supply 16,900m3 of Concrete, on behalf of Gallagher Group, employed by principal contractor; McLaren Construction.

The 60-week production will see Mick George Ltd supplying Concrete materials from its brand-new batching plant located at Mountsorrel, Leicestershire, one of two sites that the business operates in the county.

The main building of the new facility is an impressive structure that moulds into the landscape. Surrounding the building will be 11 full-size outdoor pitches, eight smaller pitches, five training grids and two goalkeeping areas.

The indoor facilities include 35 bedrooms, a hydrotherapy pool, rehabilitation facilities and dining areas for the club’s academy and first team, as well as administration offices and a media centre.

Next to the main building is a full-size indoor artificial pitch.

The centre will include a sports turf academy, to train the next generation of grounds-people, and a 499-seat minivenue show pitch, so that the under-23 and under-18 teams can experience a match environment.

The project supports biodiversity in the area, with the creation of 17 new ponds over 9,400sqm, to attract wildlife and help to manage surface water drainage.

In addition, 38,000 new trees will be planted across more than 11 hectares of retained woodland, alongside 4.4 hectares of new planting and landscaping and 14.6 hectares of wildflower grassland.

The centre is set to complete in mid 2020.

Amey Utilities launches the 2020 Challenge The Utilities team at leading public services provider Amey has launched an industry-wide competition to make leaving streetwork excavations open overnight a thing of the past.

The 2020 Challenge seeks to identify and develop new products and techniques to ensure that open excavations are no longer left overnight by 2020.

Gerry Mulholland, Director of HSEQ for Amey’s utilities business said: “Every day we work on streets in urban areas, alongside local communities and members of the public.

“The more we can minimise the impact on those communities, the greater the benefit to us all. Barriers are not always secured, they are regularly vandalised, and they are affected by weather conditions that expose the public to risk. We don’t believe this is acceptable.”

Since the introduction of the New Roads and Street Works Act in 1991, streetwork safety in the UK has improved dramatically, largely as a result of enhanced training and barrier technology, but the key risks associated with an open streetworks excavation have not been addressed.

Veolia records new district heating success

Amey will also be inviting schools, colleges and universities to take part through its STEM ambassador network.

Veolia’s drive to decarbonise heat and further the energy efficiency of buildings has taken a step forward following the signing of a new £22 million, 25 year district heating management contract with specialist regeneration and property developer U+I. Under the operating contract the new communities on the site in Hayes, West London, will benefit from the energy efficient heating and hot water supplies that will reduce carbon emissions by around 10,000 tonnes over the contract life.

Aggregate Industries becomes first construction materials supplier to achieve PAS 2080 verification Aggregate Industries has become the first construction materials supplier to achieve PAS 2080 verification after demonstrating its ongoing commitment to supplying low carbon solutions to infrastructure projects.

A major milestone for the firm, Aggregate Industries underwent a rigorous, independent audit process by the BSI to be certified as the first supplier of its kind that can ensure delivery of infrastructure projects meet the PAS 2080 standard.

As the world’s first specification for managing whole-life carbon in infrastructure, PAS 2080 has been developed by the British Standards Institute (BSI) and requires firms to show continuous improvement in reducing the whole life carbon emissions across the entirety of their operations and supply chain.

As such, the verification serves as formal recognition of Aggregate Industries’ commitment to managing its operations in a responsible, sustainable way so that it continues to make a positive contribution to the built environment for future generations.

Steve Loughney, Head of Products for Siemens in UK and Ireland, made a presentation to Michael White, Managing Director of Sirus to mark the milestone at Shelbourne Park, Dublin.

Steve commended the entrepreneurial spirit of Sirus staff saying: “Sirus are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with our technology and that is actually helping us as an organisation to push our technology forward.”

Twenty-five years ago, Sirus signed the partnership agreement with Staefa Control Systems, a Swiss company with a highend BMS product with a small market share in Ireland.

Company News Jehu Group to Partner with Carers Trust Wales for the next 2 Years Jehu Group has announced Carers Trust Wales as its charity partner for the next 2 years 2019/2020.

Carers Trust Wales works to improve support, services and recognition for the more than 370,000 people in Wales living with the challenges of caring, unpaid, for a family member or friend who is ill, frail, disabled or has mental health or addiction problems.

Jehu staff were asked in January to put forward suggestions to the Social Committee for the company’s next Charity of the year, all proposals were reviewed and finally voted for by the board.

STUDENTS ‘STEP’ ONTO MAJOR CONSTRUCTION SITES IN LEICESTERSHIRE TWENTY ambitious construction and trade students from in and around Leicestershire have been welcomed onsite at five high-profile building projects.

Stepnell is delivering several multimillion-pound projects across the county within the commercial, conservation, education and health sectors and has been offering handson work experience to college students.

Working in partnership with Leicester Employment Hub and Leicester College, budding, bricklayers, electricians, plumbers and painters have taken part in up to 60 days of work in the last three months.

Riley Sulova, aged 16, is studying electrical installation at Leicester College and gained experience on the Friars Mill site.

He said: “The team were really friendly and got me involved in as many jobs as they could, from cutting into the plasterboard where the plugs would be installed, bending conduit and handling deliveries.

“Stepnell also gave me tips on wiring buildings and how to use kits which help to avoid mistakes. The placement helped me improve my confidence and

I’m hoping the experience will help me to get a good apprenticeship in a few years.”

Tom Sewell regional director from Stepnell said: “We have been working closely with Leicester Employment Hub to identify suitable placement opportunities for students looking to build a career in construction and enhance their knowledge. Innovative approach to funding helps Llanishen Rugby Club and Clarks Modular Buildings Moves to bring clubhouse and changing room facilities in line with Llanishen Rugby Club’s brand new, state of the art 3G pitch were potentially out of reach until they approached Henry Howard Finance. Unseen additional excavation costs had stretched their budget and also put new changing rooms in doubt. As the project progressed, it became clear that an innovative approach to funding would be required.

Investing in an international size 3G pitch at Llanishen rugby ground proved problematic when it came to building a much-needed clubhouse and changing facilities. Installing the pitch and additional costs involved in excavating the proposed clubhouse site was within the club’s budget. A base-level

of funding was required, however, for local company Clarks Modular Building Ltd to get the clubhouse project underway at all – which is where Henry Howard Finance stepped in.

Ellis John, MD at Clarks Modular Building Ltd, said: “Llanishen approached us to see how we could assist them in staged payments.

I had worked with Henry Howard Finance previously and was well-aware of their flexibility and approach, and we managed to come up with an agreement which enabled Llanishen to get some assistance with initial funding.”

New research reveals employees would stay at a company longer if it reported on how it’s lowering its environmental impact New research from BRITA Professional reveals what Generation Z and Millennials expect from employers when it comes to their workplace: sustainable buildings and sustainable working practices.

BRITA Professional conducted a survey of 1,000 Generation Z (those born from the early 80s to mid-90s) and Millennials (born between the mid-90s and mid-00s) on sustainability and corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the workplace.

The research revealed that this younger generation highly value the sustainability credentials of their employer, with an overwhelming majority (86%) saying they would stay at a company longer if it reported back on how it is lowering its impact on the environment.

BRITA Professional’s report, ‘Life is Better Filtered: Corporate School of Expertise’, was launched at an industry event to discuss its findings around next generation sustainability in the workplace.

Speakers at the event included Chris Blencowe, Sustainability Manager at Parkeray and Peter Brogan, Research and Information Manager at British Institute of Facilities Management.

The research also revealed the top three CSR objectives that matter to the younger generation: • An environmentally-friendly building (46%) • Programmes in place to support health and wellbeing, including mental health (45%) • Charity partnerships to get involved with (36%) In terms of the office environment, the research also revealed the most important design elements to the younger generation are: • quiet zones (52%) • hydration stations (31%) • comfy seating areas (31%) Working culture, meanwhile, also requires forethought from employers say Generation Z and Millennials. This includes being flexible in terms of working hours and location (50%), openness and transparency (46%), and investment in personal development (44%).

Reporting Minor Incidents to Prevent Future Catastrophe Recording data on all workplace incidents and near misses, from seemingly insignificant events to serious injury, is essential for all organisations. Whilst some may deem it unnecessary or tedious to report every minor accident in the workplace, such as an employee tripping or narrowly avoiding injury caused by faulty equipment, recording these instances can be an effective strategy to prevent major incidents from occurring in the future.

The Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR) requires employers to report and keep records of incidents on site from ‘dangerous occurrences’ that include near-misses, to work-related accidents that cause death. However, there are a number of other types of incidents that are not required to be reported under RIDDOR that could be key to mitigating dangerous events.

For example, small fires on construction sites are not legally required to be reported, but this has led to a significant number of fires being underreported and a subsequent data void. With an industry-wide lack of data for nearmisses and fires, there is no way to analyse why these instances might be occurring in the first place and put mitigation efforts in place to prevent them and more catastrophic occurrences in the future.

As a result, there has been a notable rise in the number of devastating fires on construction sites, such as the recent Belfast Bank Primark fire, or Glasgow School of Art which has caught fire twice in the last four years.

Although reporting near miss incidents such as small fires is not required under RIDDOR, there is a growing data gap forming which is impeding efforts to manage and mitigate risk. Reporting minor incidents can help to identify patterns within a business that may be as a result of health and safety procedures being ignored or the early stages of faulty machinery, for example.

Is the same machine frequently leaking water? Are minor incidents happening in the same area? Are the incidents occurring within the same department or is there a trend in when the incidents occur? Without capturing this data, there is no way to analyse and identify the root cause.

For example, reporting a small water leak could seem trivial, but if it is left unaddressed it could cause an employee to slip and injure themselves, or it could be the first sign of an equipment malfunction. The ramifications of these examples could be significant – the employee may need time off work due to injury, or the equipment malfunction could result in product loss or the machine needing to be shut down for a length of time for a fix to be performed.

If the water leak had been reported when it was first spotted, the cause could have been identified and rectified quickly, avoiding an ongoing slip hazard and if a fix was required, preventing the faulty machine getting any worse.

Recording incidents of this type could also highlight similar faults with other machinery which may not have been previously identified.

It is crucial that a culture of reporting every incident is encouraged, to identify safety system weaknesses and put in place proactive measures to prevent these minor incidents becoming major catastrophes. So how can organisations make safety reporting part of the workforce’s everyday role? Streamlined apps integrated into smartphone handsets are one way to address the problem. If the workforce can quickly and easily document incidents – no matter how small – and escalate this to the appropriate department, incidents can not only be addressed quickly but the level of underreporting can also be reduced.

When it comes to fire safety in buildings, passive fire protection (PFP) coatings are increasingly on the specification list. They bring several benefits compared to other conventional PFP methods.

It was important to the owner, Gabriel, that as a main feature of the building design, the steelwork was not only protected against corrosion and fire, but also looked good, to enhance the ambience of the bar.

One night, soon after closing, a fire took hold. The fire raged through Raiz bar destroying many fixtures and fittings and causing a substantial amount of damage. Initially it was thought the cause was from an electrical shortcircuit, but having been ruled out it is now being investigated as a deliberate, criminal act. The fire burned for three hours before being brought under control and finally extinguished by the fire crews. Being outside of opening hours, the building was empty and fortunately no-one was hurt.

As the damage was assessed, it became apparent that the steel structure remained intact. Hempel’s intumescent coatings not only protected the steel against the heat and flames, but allowed additional time for the Fire Department to bring the fire under control. With the Raiz Bar, Gabriel has been advised that once the steel has been abrasively blasted, it will be ‘as new’ and ready to take a new coating system that includes Hempel’s intumescent coatings to assure protection against cellulosic fire.

“Without the protection of the intumescent coating the Fire Department believe that the glass structure would have collapsed. Thanks to this added protection the structure is in place and we can rebuild as good as new,” says Gabriel.

STAYING SAFE ON LOW LEVEL ROOFS Soni Sheimar, General Manager at EasiDec highlights the potential hazards that construction contractors face while working at height and explains the benefits surrounding low level access platforms.

A staggering number of falls from height continue to result in serious injuries and death and construction contractors are being faced with harsh fines due to unsafe working conditions and not following the correct safety procedures.

In February this year, following a 12-month enquiry, the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Working at Height published a report entitled, ‘Staying Alive: Preventing Serious Injury and Fatalities while Working at Height’.

This new report sees the APPG call upon the Government and industry to review the working at height culture, with the aim of cutting down the number of deaths and accidents caused by falls.

Construction contractors are under pressure to ensure the safety systems are in place to prevent falls from height, but at the same time, also have to place importance on retaining profits, and with time equalling money, they require safety solutions that tick both boxes – protect their staff but also save time and money.

More often than not, the safety system available to contractors is scaffolding.

While this method has its advantages, it can become more of a hindrance for short term projects. It can sometimes be timeconsuming to arrange. Regular scaffold users will know the problems around the removal of the scaffolding; it’s not always taken down as quickly as needed.

Therefore, forcing the client to complain to the site contractor or the principle contractor about the length of times it is taking for the removal of the scaffolding.

This is particularly apparent on low level flat roofing projects, which require contractors to access the rooftop quickly to complete short duration works, such as repairing leaks or replacing a section of a roof. These types of projects usually see contractors working on single garages or a collection of flat roof units. They require safe access to the roof and the appropriate roof edge protection for while they are working at height.

A much better solution is provided by using a dedicated low level roof access platform system combined with edge protection, which is specifically designed to allow contractors to work on the roof and sides of a building without moving the system. These systems provide continuous protection during repairs or inspection to specific areas of a flat roof, or whilst re-roofing work is being undertaken.

This type of system typically incorporates a 2m wide access platform on adjustable legs with winged gates to provide wider roof edge protection to EN13374 Class C and safe access up onto the roof. To ensure safety while on top of the roof, these structures also include body-guard systems with extensions to adapt to different roof length whilst still complying with EN13374 Class A and a sturdier and safer demarcation handrail rather than just tape or chains. These systems can accommodate different width roofs and can be installed as a straight run to provide edge protection for specific roof areas or connected at right angles around the perimeter of the roof for complete collective protection.

Due to its modular design, the system will easily fit into place. The system is built on the ground and raised to the required working height and then fixed to the building.

The complete system can be easily transported in a transit type van.

Manufactured from lightweight aluminum, the systems are also quick and easy to set up, take down, move to another location, and then re-assemble. It can be installed and ready to start work in less than 30 minutes, a huge time saving advantage over traditional scaffolding.

Access platforms are a cost effective alternative to scaffolding as they can be re-used over many years, giving increased savings year on year. Not only is this a thought-through solution for the roofing contractor, but this option also complies with the current relevant legislation.

By opting for a low level roof access system, contractors have a fully certified, safe and stable platform that will also save time and money on site.

What Could Brexit Mean for Construction?

It’s been unclear for a long time as to what is happening regarding Brexit and its potential influence upon the UK construction industry. Here, Rick Smith, Managing Director of Forbes Burton, a company rescue and insolvency specialist, explains what the effects are and what companies might be able to put in place before the eventual leave date.

With the date for Brexit having come and gone, it’s been a case of unsure prep for a few years now for all industries, not least the UK construction sector. With such uncertainty prevailing, it’s been difficult to watch a Government take no decisive action and even harder to know what to do to prepare.

It is generally becoming agreed that property and construction could well be the industries hit hardest by the fact that we are due to leave the EU at some point very soon. As the initial date of Friday, March 29th has been missed, day by day we will have to see which cards are played and now that we know that PM Theresa May is to eventually leave her post, who will be dealing them.

Building from the foundations Brexit has resulted in several considerations that have been unexpected, not least a slew of practical ones that could well hit several trades unexpectedly. This is demonstrable in the fact that there may well be a shortfall of materials from the EU. We’re talking basics here, tiling, roofing and other basic supplies that feed into the industry at the moment. Stockpiling is happening, but it is unknown whether this is being done to effectively address any shortages we are yet to encounter.

UK suppliers of certain materials may be able to capitalise and build upon this, but for all intents and purposes, the demand, particularly as we enter a phase of the nation’s history where more building than ever before needs to be completed may be hard to meet.

Looking to our own shores for talent It’s very easy to see the doom and gloom here of course, but what if we saw this instead as an opportunity? The fact that a certain amount of talent is vanishing does mean there is the potential to nurture more homegrown talent. There are arguments on both sides of the coin.

Skills and tooled-up workers take time to develop, but could a more reliable source of UK-based specialists be something to look forward to?

There’s often talk about supporting the construction industry from newly-elected governments. This could well be a chance that we shouldn’t waste.

Where are workers going to come from?

In light of this, it will be interesting to see which way the house-building industry is going to be affected. Initially, we may well see the possible loss of migrant workers, with movement being restricted in hitherto unknown ways. In turn, we could see labour costs increase which obviously impacts most concerns’ bottom lines. Seeking out skilled natives is notoriously difficult, so how do we combat this? The answer must be more education and vocational skills training through apprenticeships. The number of apprentices coming through the ranks these days is encouraging, but we could always do with more of the key housebuilding skills appearing.

What can be done?

To avoid any calamity, businesses should have been shoring up their concerns for the past year or so, but if you still need to ensure you aren’t caught short by any sudden legislation change, then the following can be looked into as a priority: • Update your accounts: This may seem simple, but a fully signed-off accounts book can work wonders when it comes to planning ahead. If you don’t know quite where you are when it comes to your finances, how can you take on work or large-scale projects with any certainty? It’s always worth having an audit and there’s a lot to be said for taking stock.

• Monitor and feed cash flow: It may be extremely tempting to tender for a large job but can the business support it?

Take a look at material costs, the cost of labour and time and really weigh up what it is you think you can achieve.

If it seems like you may be stretching yourself, you probably are. Projecting ahead can be so much better than simply snapping up jobs with no plan in place.

If a company has lengthy or particularly slow payment terms, can you ensure cash flow isn’t affected? Can you see through several months having not been paid immediately? Are you ready for the sometimes extended payment terms some businesses adopt?

It should be stated that construction is generally one of the most likely industries to enter into insolvency procedures.

The best advice here is to be one of the more prepared businesses out there. As unpredictable as the construction industry can be, it’s one that you can also prepare for. Being too uncertain of your own plans in this chaotic time for many may prove to be a swift way to ensure despair. There’s a lot to be said for adopting a careful route right now. Too much risk will no doubt result in problems sooner than you might think.

Progress being made with work at height safety, but work remains to be done The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Working at Height launched its landmark report, Staying Alive: Preventing Serious Injury and Fatalities while Working at Height. The report, 12 months in the making, explores why 18 per cent of people who die at work do so as a result of a fall from height. Tim Bissett, Technical Manager for Fall Protection at MSA Safety shares his thoughts on the APPG’s suggestions for keeping the 10 million people in the UK that work at height safe. MSA Safety is a global designer, manufacturer and distributor of industry-leading safety products.

The APPG for Working at Height was established in October 2017 with the purpose of enabling politicians and industry stakeholders to come together and investigate the reasons for falls from height.

The need for this group is stark. Falls from height remain the leading cause of workplace fatalities – 28% of workplace fatalities from 2017-2018 were attributed to falls from height. Digging deeper, between 2013/14 and 2017/18, falls from a height accounted for more than a quarter of all fatal injuries to workers. That’s an average of 37 deaths a year. I wholeheartedly echo comments from Alison Thewliss, Chair of the APPG on Working at Height: “These figures are too high. There should be no question or doubt over workers’ ability to return home safely to their families each evening.”

Working at Height Recommendations After a year-long investigation, the APPG has developed a set of recommendations that could lead to significant improvements in the work at height sector. It’s now essential that the government take up those recommendations and implements them. That is the key next step. The recommendations include: • Introduce an enhanced reporting system through RIDDOR, which, at a minimum, records the scale of a fall, the method used, and the circumstances of the fall.

• Appoint an independent body that allows confidential, enhanced, and digital reporting of all near misses and accidents that do not qualify for RIDDOR reporting. Share the data collected by this independent body with government and industry to inform health and safety policy.

• Extend the “Working Well Together – Working Well at Height” safety campaigns to industries outside of the construction sector.

• Introduce an equivalent system to Scotland’s Fatal Accident Inquiry process that would be extended to the rest of the UK. Each of these recommendations would be advantageous and support the existing work at height regulations. Currently, as Ms. Thewliss states in the report, there’s a real lack of empirical data and this is preventing the industry from understanding the root causes of falls from height. Recording and learning from each and every fall from height is not only fundamental to preventing mistakes from reoccurring, but a vital driver of the safety culture that the industry needs to foster.

The Effects of Brexit The report also discusses the challenges and opportunities associated with Brexit – and how that might influence Health and Safety regulations moving forward. In my opinion, preventing fatalities in the workplace transcends politics and, quite rightly, the APPG is calling on the government to ensure that worker safety will not be compromised as a result of Brexit. Indeed, 97% of businesses surveyed by manufacturers’ association EEF, stated that they want no immediate change in regulations post-Brexit. Just over half of those surveyed were in favour of a review in the future.

Regardless of the outcome of Brexit, I agree with the report when it calls on the government “to ensure that no individual working at height will be any less safe as a result of Brexit.”

Training and Education Preparation is key when it comes to working at height and quite rightly the report strongly advocates greater training and education. Too often, in my opinion, the full benefit of quality fall protection training is overlooked. Greater confidence, for instance, is an invaluable by-product of quality training. The confidence to accurately assess potential risk and make the right safety decisions at the right time cannot be underestimated.

It’s also pleasing to see that the report gives so much weight to the use of virtual and augmented reality in training. This is something that my own company, MSA Safety, has pioneered and I have seen first-hand the benefits it offers. The ability to familiarise trainees with potentially perilous situations from the safety of an office and then harness that experience in the training process is invaluable.

Choosing the right, quality equipment for the job is also a vital part of the preparation process and the report rightly refers to the important role that safety equipment manufacturers play in reducing injury and fatality rates. The ability of safety manufacturers to provide good quality products, to innovate, and to help solve customer needs or requirements is undoubtedly important. Unfortunately, however, it can count for little if those responsible for specifying fall protection equipment aren’t prepared to take due care and attention in choosing quality products tailored to their unique needs. Not all fall protection equipment is made equal. Do your research and make the right decision. Lives depend on it.

Further Consultation from the APPG In addition to the recommendations listed in the Working at Height report, the APPG also identified further opportunities for consultation, one of which was a major review of work at height culture. The UK is consistently ranked as one of the best-performing nations in terms of safety, but while people continue to die as a result of falls from height, there will always be more work to do.

As such, I would support any investigation into the suitability of legally binding financial penalties in health and safety, especially if it released additional funds for raising awareness and providing greater training and education around working at height.

Hopeful for the Future The UK has made significant progress since the introduction of the Work at Height Regulations of 2005 and if the recommendations from the ‘Staying Alive’ report are implemented, I’m confident that progress should continue to trend in the right direction. But as I say, there are always further opportunities for improvement.

Like me, APPG Chair Alison Thewliss is hopeful for the future: “I hope that this report and the future work of the APPG, alongside government and industry, will help to bring about action to see these numbers drastically reduced, and ultimately brought down to zero.”

What does mobile readiness mean for professionals in the home building industry?

The use of smartphones has grown, and nearly everyone uses a mobile phone to gain access to the internet. More than 58% of web visitors and more than 51% of page views are generated from mobile devices.

By adopting a mobile strategy, you are ensuring your web content and assets are accessible, legible and usable to visitors across all devices. Many businesses around the world are adapting to changing consumer demands and not only have to rate highly on mobile friendliness but also on mobile website speed. When it comes to speed, a load time of 5 seconds or less is acceptable. There’s a huge amount to gain by improving mobile website speed.

For many sales-focused businesses, such as those in construction, if the speed has faults or is slow, customers or clients might leave negative reviews on sites such as Yell.com. This is especially popular

when it comes to a personal job they have hired something to do.

Bringing together real-life data and hidden data, we were able to gather information about the levels of mobile website speed of builders across the UK. There was a clear correlation with those who scored well on mobile website speed and those who had high Yell ratings from customers.

What did we find?

Builders in Cardiff had a very impressive mobile speed score of 84/100, with a perfect Yell rating score of 5/5. While Bristol came second highest, their speed score was also a high 78/100 with a 5/5 Yell rating. Across the UK, builders, engineers and plumbers who adopted mobile speed have the highest Yell rating score out of every other industry - from doctors to accountants. Customers are clearly 100% satisfied by the mobile readiness of their local builders, with clear results in all customers reviews.

Comparing business success metrics, such as annual revenue numbers and reviews to mobile compliance rates, we can conclude that not only a mobile-first world but specifically mobile readiness is something to consider for 2019 improving customer satisfaction, business efficiency and a boom in revenue.

So how can builders improve customer satisfaction?

Not all professionals in the industry have their own website. But there are many ways you can boots the happiness of customers.

1. Listening to what the customers have to say and their feedback about a particular issue is a great way to improve customer satisfaction.

2. Be friendly and approachable with customers and make them feel like they can talk to you. Don’t build a wall, literally, between your customers and you. Be approachable and let them feel like you listen to them. Offer additional services to keep your customers entertained and looking forward to more deals.

Many of you might have social media platforms, which is a great way to kickstart this process.

1. You can promote your content on other people’s platforms as a marketing strategy. Ask local friends and customers help to promote you on their websites, and even then leave a Yell rating after the job. This will generate traffic on your site and boost your business.

2. After every post, you should always end with a call to action to allow people to know what you offer. This will boost your digital platform as people will understand what you offer.

3. Most people used their smartphone to get access to the internet. Mobile readiness on your website allows you to have increased traffic. This is because many people can easily get access to what you offer via the mobile without looking for a computer or desktop.

People on the move Talented craftspeople begin countrywide conservation tour SPAB’S WILLIAM MORRIS CRAFT FELLOWS 2019 Stonemason Sean Henderson, 27, carpenter and joiner Sam Matthams, 29, stonemason Luke O’Hanlon, 33, and bricklayer Matthew Wilson, 42, are the latest recruits to a unique educational scheme designed to nurture and develop the hands-on skills needed to care for old buildings. Chosen as the 2019 William Morris Craft Fellows, the talented group has now begun the countrywide conservation ‘grand tour’.

Since 1987 the SPAB (Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings) has organised the Fellowship to foster a new generation of outstanding craftspeople with the knowledge and expertise to pass on essential skills for working with historic buildings. The prestigious scheme runs in parallel to the SPAB’s Scholarship programme for architects, surveyors and engineers.

The aim is for the Fellows to gain broad, practical experience and knowledge to enable them to bring a strong awareness of craft diversity to their future professional roles. The Fellowship also equips them with the skills necessary to lead and manage historic building

contracts, while deepening their understanding of the importance of gentle repair - the keystone of the SPAB approach.

In March, our 2019 Fellows (and Scholars) began their six-month itinerary of site, workshop and studio visits. The Fellows have already visited projects at the Palace of Westminster and Hampton Court Palace, as well as small-scale, domestic projects in central London. The group will move further around the country over the next 9 months, visiting significant conservation projects to learn about traditional building techniques from skilled craftspeople with established careers in the field.

As usual, the SPAB’s 2019 Fellows are a committed and talented group (see biographies below), with each individual looking to enhance a particular skill and further their knowledge of traditional craft techniques.

Interest in craft building skills is steadily increasing as people turn to more sustainable and traditional methods of construction. Yet, ironically, these same skills are under threat as fewer young people are encouraged to pursue careers in these areas. Nationally, heritage bodies are concerned that there are simply not enough people training to continue Britain’s distinctive buildings crafts and each year SPAB’s Fellowship becomes more relevant. Three or four Fellowships are awarded each year depending on available funding.

£7.5m sheltered housing scheme opens at Danemore Tenterden A major landmark in Ashford Borough Council’s multi-million-pound modernisation plan for its sheltered housing schemes has seen the re-opening of the £7.5m Danemore scheme in Tenterden.

Located at Beechy Path and a short walk from the town centre, the new-look Danemore provides 34 homes for affordable rent for older people, together with four chalet bungalows which will be sold on the open market.

Modelled on the multi-award-winning Farrow Court scheme developed by the council in south Ashford, Danemore has 25 one bedroom and nine two-bedroom apartments, built to a high quality that are care ready.

“The first tenants have moved in and I’m delighted to say that we are already seeing a really happy community atmosphere being generated there,” said Sharon Williams, Head of Housing at Ashford Borough Council.

The first people to call Danemore home are enjoying a range of high-quality facilities.

There is a large cosy communal lounge and kitchen, laundry room, guest suite, buggy store and cycle racks. A treatment room provides hair dressing, nail bar and podiatrist and chiropodist massage chair plus foot spa.

A real community feel is fostered by the inclusion of shared facilities, including ‘hubs’ or sub lounges in addition to a main communal lounge located on the ground floor.

The scheme has been designed to maximise natural daylight in each home and through the many shared spaces. Just as much care and thought has gone into designing exterior spaces at Danemore. The traditionally built carbon friendly flats incorporate a large area of green roofing, with each flat benefiting from a winter garden balcony protected by a glazed screen. There are architect landscaped designed garden spaces with potting shed and raised beds for residents to use.

Security and connectivity are high priorities at Danemore - the scheme has CCTV monitored both on and off site, a video door entry system, a sprinkler system fitted in every apartment, the council-controlled Lifeline system installed and free WiFi in the lounge, with Freeview and Freesat also available in each of the 34 apartments.

A manager is available to ensure the smooth running of the scheme, while ABC’s own Handyman service is able to help with maintenance work.

Danemore costs around £7.5m, paid for through the council’s housing revenue account and grant funding from Homes England.

Sharon Williams said: “Ashford Borough Council has a strong track record of taking an innovative approach to delivering quality accommodation that meets the needs of our residents. Our approach to the health and housing agenda is leading the way and gives people the chance to live independently, providing a range of cost, social and health benefits.

“Farrow Court was the first project in our proactive approach to sheltered scheme remodelling and it has set the bar high. With the addition of Danemore and other schemes in the pipeline, we are making real progress in tackling the needs of an ageing population and helping to reduce social isolation.”

The old Danemore sheltered housing scheme was demolished in 2017, with the new facility built by Westridge Construction Ltd, with architects PRP also involved.

Danemore is designed to be dementiafriendly throughout, taking into account colour schemes, light, corridor lengths, patterns and memory shelves.

The scheme has been devised in recognition of the need to make special provision for the needs of an ageing population - by 2026 it is anticipated that around 40% of the residents within the Ashford borough will be aged over 50.

The Rise of Student Accommodation The demand for purpose built student accommodation (PBSA) is growing, so much so that the number of student bed spaces due to be built for the 2019/20 academic year is 25% higher than last year totalling 29,000 beds.

Why the demand? Student numbers are rising, 561,420 people applied to start a course in 2019, that’s nearly 2,500 more than last year. But, what does this mean for the British construction industry?

PBSA accommodation provides 77% of the supply in the sector compared to University provided beds. 47% of Students Now Study Outside Their Home Region. There are now more students in Higher Education than ever before with 1.8m studying full time across Britain. In comparison, in the 1999/2000 academic year, there were just 670,000 students studying outside their home region. Today that figure stands at 1,100,000, with a whopping 23% of them moving from outside of the UK. The number of non UK applicants continues to grow, so much so that, EU students have risen by 63% and international students by 215% since 1999/00. As UK university degrees are acknowledged to be more prestigious and the value of Sterling weakens, there shows little sign of non UK applications falling.

no surprise that bed spaces will increase by 25% for the 2019/2020 academic year, making it an ideal opportunity for both PBSA developers and construction companies.

Latest News Spring Statement - Comment from David Harris of Pick Everard David Harris, partner at property, construction and infrastructure consultancy Pick Everard reacts to today’s Spring Statement.

As expected, today’s Spring Statement was dominated by the topic of Brexit, with last night’s meaningful vote throwing ‘a cloud of uncertainty’ over the economy. Mr Hammond did maintain, however, that we have a solid foundation on which to build Britain’s future.

I believe that, for the construction industry at least, we should look to the opportunities the future presents us with. We’re a robust industry and we’ve certainly weathered ‘storms’ before and come out stronger. It’s a chance for us to carve out standards that work for us and ways of working from which we can all benefit.

Infrastructure, skills and housing were three areas the Chancellor of the Exchequer claimed needed investment in order to boost productivity. This is something I certainly agree with. Proper connectivity between towns and cities, an appropriately skilled workforce – promoting an equal gender balance – and housing to meet growing demand will position the country as a world leader and enable us to further compete in the global market.

The Borderlands Growth Deal was announced, committing £260 million for the English/ Scottish border, with deals for Wales and Derry Londonderry also being discussed. This is great news for the UK in growing better connected and prosperous economies across the regions.

Mr Hammond reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the Northern Powerhouse’s rail project. We are wholeheartedly behind this scheme as the region has so much to offer but, without proper connectivity between the great cities of the North, its productivity will suffer.

Since the removal of PFIs in the 2018 Budget, the government is now looking at how the country can benefit from private infrastructure investment, sorely needed to support future development and continued growth of our domestic and international economies.

A modern industrial strategy also means incorporating technology. The evolution of smart city development is proving to be a key contributor; optimising connectivity and harnessing the incredible potential available to us through real-time data, improving the lives of communities and the effectiveness of commerce.

As an industry, we’re facing a skills crisis so it was encouraging to hear that Mr Hammond has recognised the need to include ‘technical and vocational skills at the heart of our education system’. He provided an update on T levels, the national retraining scheme and apprenticeships.

In terms of apprentices, in the 2018 Budget it was announced that employers’ co-

The dawn of Brexit may even see UK students rise, due to a phenomenon called counter cyclical.

Where there is an economic downturn, the public may look to increase their skills and look to Higher Education.

investment paid would be halved – from 10% to 5%. This will take affect from 1 April. I’m very supportive of the apprenticeship scheme, so if this encourages more businesses to take on apprentices that’s fantastic news.

Learning while on the job is the best way to gain experience and understand the industry – while simultaneously progressing with an education.

Housing is always high on the agenda and, at Pick Everard, we’ve proud to be working on a number of significant residential schemes across the UK, which are all essential in alleviating the housing crisis. £717 million from the £5.5 billion Housing Infrastructure Fund will be used to unlock up to 37,000 homes at sites in London, the Oxford-Cambridge Arc and Cheshire. This is a great first step, but we need more land to be unlocked – this scheme hasn’t quite gone far enough yet; particularly in areas that really need it.

Through the Affordable Homes Guarantee Scheme, the government will guarantee up to £3 billion of borrowing by housing associations in England to support delivery of around 30,000 affordable homes.

As we move towards a more sustainable future, it’s great to see that a new Future Homes Standard will be introduced. This will help to end fossil-fuel heating systems in all houses from 2025.

The no-deal vote this evening will certainly have an impact on our future. But I remain positive that our industry will remain buoyant and that, through collaboration and a skilled and committed workforce, we can continue to prosper and thrive.

What’s the Impact of PBSA on Landlords?

As PBSA continues to grow with new bed spaces increasing year on year should landlords be concerned? PBSA tends to be high spec, luxury, living conditions. These deluxe living spaces are likely to surge the standards of student property across the nation. This could mean private landlords will have to lower their rent or revamp their properties to compete with big PBSA.

With retention rates at an already high level, the breed of co living schemes could see these rates boost even higher, as it becomes easier for students to remain in the city. Developers and town planners need to ensure there is enough

New product aims to put a stop to site theft, data blackspots and downtime Sunstone Systems unveils its ARC unit to provide power, security and communications for temporary locations and events British technology company, Sunstone Systems, has today unveiled the latest product in its range, the Autonomous Remote Communications Unit (ARC).

Scalable, portable and modular, the ARC has been created to provide flexibility for a wide range of sites and events.

The ARC is an off-grid product capable of delivering 24/7 HD CCTV powered entirely by solar energy. It is designed for sites that require robust, flexible, cost-effective solutions for their security and safety needs, which means remote locations can be secure and connected without the need for hard wired power or data.

The ARC also enables wireless cellular or WiFi networks in areas with no existing infrastructure, putting an end to the problem of communication blackspots on site. This reduces civil engineering costs by eliminating the need for groundworks to install masts and ducting for power and data cabling.

The ARC is rapid to deploy too - it can be installed, and operational in under an hour. Regardless of its location, the ARC also comes with system health monitoring, which means Sunstone engineers are alerted to any potential issues and can proactively attend a site to mitigate downtime. Each unit is 99% recyclable and, because it is powered by solar energy, can reduce a sites carbon footprint by up to 500kg’s per year - critical for all sectors looking to cut CO2 emissions in line with The Paris Agreement.

Every installation comes with a site survey as standard to ensure the ARC effectively meets the security and communication needs of the client’s operational requirements. This is carried out by the Sunstone team. However, when purchasing the unit, Sunstone will also provide a template for sites to be able to replicate this process as required.

Product specifications Because the product has been designed to cater for a wide variety of site needs and situations there are a number of options available when it comes to specification.

Each unit comes with built-in anti-theft and vandalism measures, including built in GPS, concealed hinges, fully enclosed, ruggedised and lockable cabinet with IP66 rating and an anti-vandal collar, with the option to add sensors.

The ARC also comes with site surveillance as standard, either PTZ or four static cameras with virtual trip wires and exclusion zones. However, the cameras, and associated cost, can be removed from the product if a site already has its own. Similarly, wireless equipment is also included but can be removed if unnecessary.

The ARC is a premium product unlike anything else on the market currently. It is designed, manufactured and tested in the UK by Sunstone Systems. Bespoke modifications will be considered by the team. It can be either rented, leased

There are also a number of additional options for sites renting the unit. These include integrated PA systems and LED lighting for instant deterrents to onsite issues. If that is not enough, a 24/7 remote monitoring service can be added, which means a response team can be dispatched and the emergency services alerted should there be a site break-in.

There is also the option to add high-speed broadband connection and site-wide WiFi so a site can be connected and fully functional on day one of a project.

The award comes following an independent survey of new homebuyers in which over 90% of Taylor Wimpey’s customers stated that they would recommend the builder to a friend.

In the survey, carried out between October 2017 and September 2018 new homebuyers were asked to give

feedback on the quality of their new home and the customer service they received. Taylor Wimpey’s five star builder rating demonstrates the homebuilder’s commitment to putting its customers first and building homes which are right first time.

LAND & WATER NAMED WINNER OF A CONSTRUCTION NEWS SPECIALISTS AWARD Last week, Land & Water was named winner in the category Project of the Year by a Specialist (subcontract up to £1m) for its work at Taplow Bridge at the 2019 Construction News Specialists Awards.

The awards brought together over 750 of the UK’s leading specialist contractors for an evening of celebration, recognition and networking.

The inspirational winners of the 2019 Construction News Specialists Awards were crowned in front of the industry peers 27 March at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London.

After a face to face review by a panel of over 70 expert judges, Land & Water was recognised for its work on Taplow Bridge in the category Project of the Year by a Specialist (subcontract up to £1m).

The project began last year, after major developer Berkeley Homes, secured a

parcel of land on the River Thames in Taplow, Berkshire for a new housing development. The company approached Land & Water to help with footbridge access that would span the River Thames onto Ray Mill Island. Access to this section of the development site was limited and construction of the bridge from the land was not possible.

Land & Water’s project specialists utilised an innovative approach that

would allow installation of the bridge from the water to connect two parts of the land over a 35 metre stretch of the River Thames. The solution required the installation of extensive piled foundations and construction of intricate reinforced concrete abutments to support a statement bridge, culminating with the delivery of the iconic footbridge by water on a unique pontoon, spun across the river to allow the bridge to be lowered onto the abutments with mm to spare.

The hose clamp for every application As an engineer in the field, there is nothing more infuriating than finding you have the wrong size or type of fitting to complete the job, no matter how well stocked the van is it is impossible to carry every component for every eventuality. Ever more so is this the case as an maintenance engineer with a requirement for hose clamps. With an almost never ending list of types including: Nut and Bolt, Double Ear, Single Ear, Self-Closing, Over-centre, Herbie Clip to name a few the decision of what to stock your tool box with is a difficult one, so which do you choose?

How can we be sure the worm drive clip is up to the job? For standard duty clips there are a number of different applicable standards depending on the country and industry. The below chart shows the most common and as you can see operating requirements for the British Standard BS5315 are far in excess of all other standards. The only way to ensure you have a clip that meets this high standard is to look for the British Standard Kitemark. Schöck Isokorb for largest UK Passivhaus development Claimed to be the largest Passivhaus development to date in the UK and Camden Council’s largest community investment project, Agar Grove Estate, in North West London, is undergoing a six-phase major regeneration, due for completion in 2025.

This is a project that will deliver 493 new high-quality homes for existing residents, with maisonettes and gardens on the ground floor and apartments on the higher floors with full width balconies.

As the project is to Passivhaus standard, the development meets the highest levels of sustainability and energy efficiency. High levels of insulation to the thermal envelope result in exceptional levels of airtightness and a critical element on the project is the avoidance of thermal bridging – a frequent cause of increased heat, energy loss and condensation.

Thermal risk is at balcony and parapet connections The risk of thermal bridging is primarily at connectivity points involving the balconies and parapets; and one of the most technically advanced countermeasures is the Isokorb range of structural thermal breaks from Schöck. For the balconies,

NorDan UK Achieves Record-breaking Growth of over 37% in 2018 NorDan UK looks back on its most successful financial year yet – with a 37% growth in 2018. The UK arm of the Norwegian timber windows and doors manufacturer achieved an increase in turnover from £32.5m in 2017 to an astonishing £44.6m in 2018.

NorDan has been part of the UK’s building products industry for over 25 years and has seen a steady increase in demand for high performance products. The Livingston based company’s Managing Director, Alex Brown, is proud of the achievement and considers the record turnover to a number of factors aligning at the same time.

“Even by our standards, this growth is extraordinary. It is the result of major special projects, loyal partnerships and of course a lot of hard-work by our dedicated team across the UK, whom we continue to invest in heavily.” says Brown.

“We’ve seen a significant growth in our key markets in both Scotland and England. In Scotland, we are well on our way to becoming a household name, and a combination of loyal customers and new developments add real value in our growth. In England we have seen several major projects in London, including our largest single order in history for Brunel Street Works in the Silvertown area. At the same time, our increased presence in the England North area: Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds and Birmingham has paid off in the amount of orders taken along with new relationships being built each day”, says Brown.

Becoming the preferred window supplier for an increasing number of clients is about more than manufacturing and specifying high performance products. A strategic direction for NorDan UK has been continuous investment in all aspects of the UK company and its parent company, Norwegian registered NorDan Gruppen AS. A close cooperation between the centralised functions of sales, marketing and operations in the UK and the class

leading production capacity in Poland means these key functions are close to the customer.

Being able to identify talents internally and give them room to grow is also important, and key appointments such as Joanne McGhee as Operations Director is a clear symbol of this.”, Brown adds.
