YOUNG CONSTRUCTION STARS NAMED IN ‘SKILLS OLYMPICS’ LINE-UP

Four construction stars are following in the footsteps of our sporting Olympic stars, as they prepare to represent the UK at WorldSkills Lyon 2024, known as the ‘skills Olympics’.

WorldSkills UK, a four nations partnership between education, industry and UK governments, is responsible for selecting, mentoring and training Team UK. Pearson, the world’s leading learning company is the official partner of Team UK for WorldSkills Lyon 2024 which takes place from 10 -15 September.

Just like their sporting counterparts, Team UK has been training hard for this once in a lifetime opportunity to represent their country in their chosen career. The UK has been taking part in the WorldSkills Competition since 1953 and the event is used by governments around the world, economists and global business leaders as a litmus test to measure preparedness to optimise future economic growth.

WorldSkills Lyon 2024 will host over 1500 young people from 65 countries, who will compete in 62 different skill disciplines.

On being selected for Team UK, Harry Scolding, Joinery said:

SPORT ENGLAND FUNDING FOR MAIDSTONE LEISURE CENTRE

Sport England has awarded Maidstone Leisure Centre funding to help improve the swimming pool at the complex.

The government funding is aimed at improving the energy of public facilities and the Maidstone Borough Council (MBC) owned leisure centre has received £516,000 to install heat recovery systems and replace boilers.

More than 300 facilities with swimming pools across the UK have been awarded funding from the Government and Sport England’s £60m capital investment programme. 264 local authorities have received a share of the funding, of which £20m has been provided by Sport England via the National Lottery and just over £40m has been provided by the Government as part of their commitment to support the long-term sustainability of public leisure.

MBC Leisure Facility Manager, Mike Evans said: “The funding from Sport England is fantastic news for Maidstone Leisure Centre and for all the people who use it and will help make the building more efficient and reduce energy costs.

“The Council’s further investment into the leisure centre this year will improve the customer experience ensuring that it continues to be a place where people can enjoy active lifestyles.”

OUT MILESTONE IN £42.5M BTR DEVELOPMENT

Church Street Place, a joint venture between Arlesco Ventures Ltd, and Silverlane Developments (NW) Ltd along with their principal contractor BCEGI, project monitors Naismiths, with funding by lending specialist Zorin Finance, proudly celebrated the Topping Out ceremony, marking a significant advancement in the Build to Rent (BTR) development. The project, at its midway point, is poised to redefine a substantial section of Eccles’ town centre and elevate the community’s residential presence.

Church Street Place is a transformative development involving the demolition of existing properties to make way for a multi-story structure accommodating 272 one-, two-, and three-bedroom rental apartments. Additionally, the development includes 685 square metres of ground floor commercial space, contributing to the enhancement of Eccles’ retail and F&B offerings.

The development consists of ground plus 3 & 5-story buildings, complemented by a tower rising to an impressive 22 stories. The ground floor, strategically positioned to address Church Street, Vicarage Grove, and Birkdale Grove, seamlessly integrates into the existing urban fabric. In addition, the Local Authority now controls the redevelopment of the town’s shopping centre which is integral to the wider area as a whole.

The multifunctional ground floor encompasses commercial spaces, apartment entrances, plant, and service areas. Notably, it provides 19 car parking spaces and 168 bicycle spaces, emphasising a commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly living. A meticulously designed planted courtyard, situated behind the podium, adds a touch of greenery and offers residents private, accessible amenity space.

BELLWAY APPLIES TO BUILD 135 HOMES ON BROWNFIELD SITE IN EASINGTON LANE

Bellway has applied to bring a residential site in Easington Lane back into use more than 20 years after a housing estate there was demolished.

The housebuilder has submitted plans to Sunderland City Council to build 135 homes on land South of Murton Lane, where the Forest Estate stood until the early 2000s.

Bellway hopes to build two, three and fourbedroom houses on the land, which spans almost 12 acres.

Bellway plans to build a mix of terraced, semi-detached and detached houses. The house types would be from The Artisan Collection, Bellway’s best-in-class range of architect-designed homes.

The development would be accessed from a roundabout at Murton Lane, and from Easington Lane High Street. A previous application for residential development on the land was approved in 2019 but never delivered.

A statutory consultation period is underway, during which Sunderland City Council will seek comments on the planning application.

PLATFORM INVESTS IN BOARDS OF THE FUTURE

Earlier this month Platform Housing Group launched its “Board Member Introductory Course” in a bid to coach colleagues who have an aspiration in becoming a board member one day in their career journey.

While colleagues working directly for Platform are conflicted from being able to join its own board, the course run by Platform’s Governance team looked to give individuals the knowledge and skill set for them to pursue board positions in other organisations, and within other sectors.

Colleagues who took part in the two day course, covered topics such as: board member duties, liabilities and skills, financial and regulatory implications, alongside a talk by recruitment company Page who gave delegates an in-depth insight into what can make their CV’s stand out when applying for non-executive board positions.

CAMERON HOMES ANNOUNCES NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN HAGLEY AND REPTON

Midlands-based homebuilder, Cameron Homes, is launching two new developments in sought-after locations; Hagley near Stourbridge, and Repton in Derby.

Hagley Manor offers a collection of 26 new homes, nestled within the picturesque village of Hagley. Scheduled for completion in 2025, the development will provide opportunities to a range of customers as it includes three properties that will be available as part of the First Homes scheme, plus seven build-torent homes.

Repton Chase is due for completion later this year and offers an exclusive collection of seven bungalows priced from £375,000. BOUYGUES UK PUTS BIODIVERSITY AND CARBON REDUCTION AT FOREFRONT OF PENTRE AWEL PROJECT

Biodiversity at Pentre Awel is expected to increase by 137% by project completion, thanks to the work of the scheme’s building contractor Bouygues UK.

Pentre Awel is being delivered by Carmarthenshire County Council and the entire development will bring together life science and business innovation, community healthcare and modern leisure facilities within 83-acres of land on the Llanelli coastline.

Throughout the landmark project, Pentre Awel’s team has worked closely with stakeholders, including Carmarthenshire County Council’s ecology officers and Natural Resources Wales to ensure the development does not impact on the ecology and waterbodies that surround the site.

As well as ensuring the wildlife are well protected on the construction site, the site team has strictly followed the 8m exclusion zone, going above and beyond to ensuring the nearby Afon Dafen is not polluted by any construction runoff.

Bouygues UK has also engaged with staff and its supply chain to be as sustainable as possible during the build, targeting 24 specific initiatives to help reduce carbon emissions, waste and energy for the duration of the project.

Bouygues UK has committed to diverting 98% of waste from landfill. Excavated material and soil from the surface of the site has been taken to a local recycling facility where the material can be segregated, treated and reused, reducing the amount of waste going to landfill.

TESTING TIMES FOR FIRE DOOR SAFETY STANDARDS

Colin Campbell, Managing Director at Codelocks looks at what the proposed changes to testing fire doors will mean for the construction industry.

The recent proposal to move the testing of fire door safety standards from the current British Standard BS 476-22 to the European Standard EN 1634-1 will lead to higher costs, less choice, delays to construction projects and potentially higher risk for inhabitants.

Fires in buildings and homes take a devastating toll on people and property. No wonder there are significant regulatory controls designed to protect us from fires starting and spreading. Despite this they still occur. Between September 2022 and September 2023,

the fire rescue service attended over 39,000 fires in dwellings and other buildings. 208 people died in these ‘dwelling fires’. Public buildings present a particular risk. NHS Trusts alone recorded 1,372 fires in 2022/23. That is equivalent to almost four fires a day across the NHS.

Fire doors are critical components of any construction project and play a vital role in restricting the spread of fire, smoke and heat. Fire doors have to meet stringent safety standards and each fire door is given a fire resistance rating, determined by how long the door can withstand fire. In the UK this has been calculated using tests specified in BS 476-22, which has been in place since 1987.

The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) has recently proposed that fire door testing requirements move away from British Standard BS 476-22 to the European Standard EN 1634-1. This is likely to have a big impact on fire door manufacturers and associated industries, from access control and locks right up to the broader construction industry.

It is argued that the widespread adoption of the European classification EN 1634-1 has rendered the BS classification redundant. According to the DLUHC, the switch to EN 1634-1 would harmonise standards, including CE or UKCA marking, to ensure acceptance of products across Europe and strengthen market access for UK construction products. Parts of the BS 476 series standard haven’t been reviewed in nearly 30 years and the UK test differs significantly from the European one. The current adoption of BS 476 series allows for interchangeability of door hardware through strict, and managed assessment rules, but this interchangeability is not

possible under EN 1634-1, which will lead to multiple new fire testing being required for doorsets already covered under BS 476-22, if the BS 476 series is removed from Approved Document B.

Far reaching impacts

By looking at what is involved in testing fire doors, we get an idea of the scale of work involved in switching to the new standard, and who it impacts.

Separate tests are made on complete fire door sets: that is the fire door and door frame plus all the requisite hardware – lock, latches, hinges, etc. As each element has to pass the tests, any alteration means retesting every component in a complete fire door set.

The change will impact the manufacturers of fire doors and frames, as well as locks and access control systems. It impacts the broader construction industry as there will be less choice, higher cost and lengthy delays to projects. Ultimately, it will impact everyone who lives in, accesses or uses a building that has to have fire

protection. So, residents, office workers, teachers and school children, nurses, doctors and hospital patients, retail workers, shoppers – essentially the whole population.

The impact will be felt across all sectors, and will affect costs, delivery, choice and much more.

Firstly, costs will rise. The cost of testing doors will increase as each one will have to be retested. The cost will be passed on to customers, be that the developers of construction projects and ultimately the home or business owner.

The cost of testing locks to meet fire door regulations is not insignificant. Each test costs in the region of £11,000 – per lock, per door type. In the UK there are 371 timber fire door manufacturers. And, once again the cost increase will pass on to the customer.

Secondly, additional tests will incur delays. It takes around six months to schedule and perform the tests with a further six months to receive the test reports. Testing takes time and not all fire door and lock manufacturers will have tests completed at the same time. Construction projects are at risk of being delayed if a fire door has been specified and ordered, but hasn’t yet been tested. This inevitably impacts the delivery of construction projects, which may be subject to penalties for every delay.

Thirdly, there will be less choice as fewer manufacturers will have compliant products in the short term. Architects and construction companies will start specifying EN 1634-1 as there is a risk that the standards will have changed by the time the doors are purchased and installed. As most of the available fire doors constructed to EN 1634-1 will be sourced from European manufacturers, there will be a potential threat to UK businesses. Competition for the European products could result in supply chain issues, delays and higher costs for importing from the EU.

An unnecessary risk to standards

The change also runs the risk of lowering standards. A construction project that is tempted to cut corners and not adhere to strict fire safety standards will have devastating consequences, as we have seen too often. Already, research from the Fire Door Inspection Scheme (FDIS) indicates that 75% of fire doors fail to meet the required standards, with the three top reasons for failure being fitting, sealing, and maintenance and repair.

Improve standards through training It’s clear to see how quickly substantial costs would add up for independent UK firms while also causing massive delays and disruption to construction projects. While large global manufacturers can absorb the cost of retesting, the knockon effect could be large swathes of business leaving the UK.

There is broad consensus across the industry that the British Standard BS 476-22 is fit for purpose. Rather than change the standard for testing, introducing a mandatory standard or training for fire door installation and maintenance is likely to prove more

effective to address essential safety issues.

Following the consultation on amendments to Approved Document B, which was launched by the UK and Republic of Ireland governments in

2023, both governments agreed that fire door testing to BS 476-22 will continue to be accepted in England and Ireland alongside EN 1634-1, with a list of amendments being published within Approved Document B in March 2024.

ENSURING FIRE SAFETY AT STUDENT ACCOMMODATION: POTTERROW CASE STUDY

The ever-evolving importance of fire safety poses a number of challenges to the construction sector, with the emphasis on regulatory compliance remaining a top priority to safeguarding buildings and their inhabitants. When a non-combustible External Wall Insulation (EWI) solution was required for a renovation project at Potterrow Student Living in Edinburgh, Dryvit was called upon to specify a suitable remedy, owing to their reputation as leaders in the EWI industry.

COMPETENCE INITIATIVE MAKES PROGRESS

The Joint Competency Initiative (JCI), in which the Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA) is involved, is finalising its first framework for installers within the door, gates and shutter industry.

ADSA is working with the Door Hardware Federation (DHF) and the British Woodworking Federation (BWF) to establish the first of the “routes to competence” for the sector.

The JCI was established in response to the Building Safety Act and is considered to be the most significant change to health and safety legislation within the construction industry over the past 40 years.

The framework for installers includes skills required for the fitting of powered pedestrian doors of all types, steel and wooden fire-rated doors, gates and shutter systems including steel fire doors.

The Project

Situated by the University of Edinburgh, Potterrow Student Living is close to a variety of local amenities, tourist attractions, public transport links, and student nightlife.

As a Silver Certified Property accredited by Global Student Living, Potterrow is currently undergoing refurbishment to enhance the quality of living.

The Solution

One of the primary concerns affecting living quality relates to building safety. This has become paramount in recent years and compliance with building regulations is now a widely adopted mission for manufacturers, architects, installers, and building owners alike.

Working closely with ADP Edinburgh, as well as Sharkey and AFS Scotland, Dryvit specified the most suitable solution to meet the project requirements. Roxsulation Pro on Steel Frame Systems (SFS), which is a cost-effective External Insulation and Finish System (EIFS), is ideal for the refurbishment of both domestic and commercial properties that require a non-combustible finishing system to meet fire safety requirements. This system incorporates Euroclass A1 non-combustible Stone Wool insulation to produce a safe, protective layer around the building envelope, and is not subject to height restrictions (Euroclass A2-s1,d0 in accordance with EN 13051-1.

In addition to the fire performance attributes of this system, Roxsulation Pro is also a highly energy efficient option, whereby the insulative materials work in harmony to lower heating and cooling costs. Dryvit systems are renowned for their weatherability and durable characteristics, which strive to create an exterior insulation solution that provides a resistant barrier to the elements, enhancing the longevity of the structure.

HOW DO YOU TACKLE SUSTAINABILITY IN SAFETY FOOTWEAR?

Can you tell us a little more about the actions you are focussed on?

We spoke to Simon Ash, HAIX Sales Manager in the UK and Ireland, about how the company is facing the challenge and innovating in material sourcing and production.

Do you think it’s possible to achieve a successful sustainable strategy in PPE manufacturing?

There’s no doubt that working towards a sustainable future is a challenge for many businesses and it’s no different in PPE manufacturing. HAIX is focussed on making the largest possible contribution to a better future and our approach is quite clear, in that we want to move away from disposable products at the same time as focussing on customer safety which remains our primary goal. Sustainability is a route which we are committed to and we will work hard to meet our targets. We have a set of goals to achieve this including: reducing energy consumption, waste and emissions; focussing on the longevity and reparability of our product; developing more environmentally friendly packaging; and building on our social responsibility throughout the HAIX family.

Our sustainable practices are part of a long-term strategy aimed at minimising our environmental footprint. We see sustainability as one system and are taking a holistic view to planning and implementing our strategy. We are focussing on three core themes ‘Made in Europe; We Are Family; Repair and Care.’

HAIX has always had a reputation for quality in design and production and we believe that sticking to the principles of using the best quality materials, sourced from certified suppliers who are also achieving sustainable targets, we will not compromise on the quality of our product. Our products are made to last and to assist in helping our customers extend the life of their footwear further, we offer an in-house repair service, supported by a worldwide network of trusted, skilled repair partners.

Can you give us some examples of how you are achieving your goals?

We have brought together a dedicated inhouse ‘sustainability’ team, lead by Josef Cremer in the role of Sustainability Officer. The team identifies and develops new initiatives to enable us to meet our targets. This is supported throughout the business as we encourage all employees to organise and work on sustainability projects in their departments.

This is all backed up by external audit and certification, such as OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and Leather Standard, production site auditing by BSCI and other safety, quality and environmental certificates.

We collect environmental data on water and energy consumption, renewable energy use, waste generation and CO2 emissions (Scope 1-3) at all our sites in Europe. As an example, at our headquarters site in Germany, we

use renewable district heating from a woodchip-fired thermal power plan. In addition, we draw electricity from our own dedicated photovoltaic systems and additional purchased electricity is 100% from renewable sources. These kinds of initiatives are replicated across our production site in Croatia.

How has sustainability influenced your product design processes?

I think it’s true to say that our environmental focus has stimulated real innovation in our design and manufacturing. HAIX products have a deserved reputation for quality and durability. HAIX products are not ‘throw away’ items. They are built to last. We have invested significantly in the development of sustainable materials. In addition, we are looking at ways to increase the use of recycled materials in the components that make up our footwear without diminishing its durability and functionality. We carry out extensive wear trials to make sure our footwear meets the high standards customers can expect from us and carry out quality testing in our own laboratories, looking at the products we produce as well as carrying out market surveillance on competitor products and alternative materials.

Products are designed to be repaired when necessary, extending the life of the product beyond others on the market. We have our own dedicated repair workshop, employing master shoemakers who can repair and service our products. In other regions, we have formed a network of trusted, skilled partners who can offer this service to customers across the globe. This also promotes the preservation of expertise

(shoemaking) and regional jobs in the footwear industry.

Are HAIX products fully recyclable?

Given the products are designed to be long lasting and offer protection against harsh environments, some critical component parts are difficult to be fully recyclable. However, HAIX shoes can be thermally recycled to generate electricity and heat that can be supplied to households and industry. Thermal recycling is an efficient and sustainable form of waste disposal that saves fossil fuel usage and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

What can we expect in the future as you continue on your sustainable journey?

We will be working on continuous improvement in the sustainability performance of our products - both in the ecological and social areas.

them. Our entire vehicle fleet will be converted to electromobility by 2026. The area of PV systems on our roofs has almost tripled in 2023 - further systems are being planned.

CO2 savings are also being planned in the areas of material consumption, logistics and employee journeys.

SUPPORTING WOMEN IN CONSTRUCTION: ADDRESSING INCLUSIVITY IN PROTECTIVE CLOTHING

With more women occupying roles in construction, Hannah Sargent of PULSAR® addresses the need for greater inclusivity in hi-vis workwear and PPE.

According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), women now make up a higher proportion of the construction workforce than at any time since records began, with female professionals

accounting for 15.8% of the industry’s recorded numbers between April and June 2023.

Despite being comparatively lower than other sectors, change can often suggest progress, and many believe the misconceptions surrounding genderspecific roles in industries such as construction, engineering and rail are gradually diminishing. Though elements of that may be true, there’s undoubtedly a number of challenges that still require addressing, with one of those being the allocation of suitable hi-vis protective workwear and PPE.

For labour intensive sectors, protective clothing keeps working professionals safe, secure and compliant. Yet, research from the National Association of Women in Construction for Yorkshire (NAWIC) has highlighted that 59.6% of female professionals do not receive women’s PPE in their construction based role. There’s a glaring issue here, and one that is not unique to the construction industry either. With that in mind, what more can be done to ensure female professionals are equipped in appropriate protective workwear?

Equity over equality

Historically, women have seldom found hi-vis workwear and protective

equipment in female fits, with many facing issues on product availability and improper sizing. Too often, gender has gone unnoticed, leaving female employees to make use of the garments provided to them in men’s cuts.

When it comes to fit, there is huge significance in acknowledging gender requirements - especially in safety critical environments. In expecting women to be scaled down versions of their male counterparts, female workforces are inadequately protected in their roles, and are made to feel uncomfortable in the process. Take trousers for example, where a ‘regular-fit’ will often be too tight on a woman’s hips and thighs, whilst simultaneously being too loose around the waist and too long in the legs. Similarly, ill-sized hi-vis coats and jackets can feel dangerously long in the arms, hanging loose over a woman’s hands and making the wearer more susceptible to hazards and injury. When an individual becomes distracted by their workwear, it practically becomes redundant.

Equally, these conditions can also impede the wearer’s ability to perform in their role. Besides restricting movement and heightening risk, poor-fitting workwear can significantly reduce productivity, whereby users must constantly pull up sleeves or trousers before completing a task. In turn, this creates a knock-on effect for women who feel excluded and professionally discredited, and as a result, many skilled professionals may feel forced to leave their role and the industry altogether, impacting a network of projects and occupations. To nurture the confidence of female professionals in construction, employers must start with the equipment.

and are making positive steps in finding suitable resolutions. In doing so, women’s workwear and PPE has made great strides in becoming more obtainable than ever before.

With that said, many end users continue to find a disconnect between their requirements and what is being offered by unreliable ‘womenswear’ products. In seeking out women’s fits, female professionals are still being presented with minimal options and features, as well as cuts that are too short in the crotch or too tight across the chest for example. In some cases, material and fibre selection is also overlooked, with cotton rich products offering little to no flexibility in areas where women need it most.

To amend this, research and testing is key. Conscious design teams are shifting their focus towards the development process, where they can collaborate with end users to conceptualise and create comfortable and functional womenswear products. As decision makers look to balance durability and safety with the needs of female professionals, dedicated garment designers are enlisting trial wearers with a view of positively receiving feedback. By listening to end users throughout each stage of a product’s lifecycle, design teams are better equipped to meet the growing

demands associated with inclusive hi-vis workwear and PPE.

As such, if the construction sector is to continue moving in the right direction, employers must also be proactive in their education on inclusive workwear and protective apparel. During product procurement, it’s crucial for decision makers to consider the needs of the entire workforce, regardless of shape, size or gender. By placing emphasis on effective research and garment design, women’s workwear and protective apparel will continue to evolve alongside the proportion of women in this sector. After all, the construction industry needs skilled female professionals. And professionals need appropriate protective clothing.

NEW K SYSTEMS TECHNICAL DIRECTOR

Leading quarry and mineral processor Kilwaughter Minerals Limited has appointed Kevin Mangan as Technical Director of its K Systems brand.

Kevin joins Kilwaughter, which is headquartered in Larne in County Antrim, from global construction solutions company Sika Ltd and enters the role with over 30 years’ experience in the ETICS industry. Kevin will play a lead role in strategy development, innovation and product development, quality assurance and compliance.

Marcus embarked on his career with Wyatt Homes after studying Real Estate Management at Oxford Brooks University. He further honed his skills by working for a development consultancy agency before qualifying as a Chartered Surveyor in 2019. His extensive experience includes roles with both national master developers and housebuilders before joining Wyatt Homes.

SEVEN NEW DIRECTORS FOR AMEON

GLEEDS MAKES SENIOR PM HIRES TO DRIVE MAJOR LONDON GROWTH

International property and construction consultancy Gleeds has announced two senior appointments, with project management experts Andrew Todman and Craig Ward joining the firm from Avison Young. The new hires will aim to drive growth in Gleeds’ major London projects division and continue to develop the business by harnessing new opportunities.

With over 25 years in the construction industry, both Craig and Andrew bring a wealth of experience in the strategic management of complex, multiphase developments including new build and refurbishment schemes across a range of sectors. Focusing primarily on the London market in recent years, they have demonstrated an ability to optimise the performance of their project teams and deliver on behalf of multiple stakeholders.

Formerly Second London Wall Project Management, the Avison Young pair have been involved in a host of multifaceted programmes, including prominent London landmarks such as Wembley Stadium, Chelsea Barracks, Kensington Palace, and 80 Charlotte Street. In addition, they have tackled numerous high-profile mixed-use schemes such as 40 Leadenhall Street – one of the biggest projects ever to receive planning permission in the City of London, and the three-acre Fitzroy Place in Fitzrovia.

North west headquartered, national building services engineering company, Ameon, has enlarged its executive team with the appointment of seven new directors: all promoted from the company’s senior management cohort. The additions to the executive at one of Lancashire’s commercial success stories, come with the business positioned as one of the county’s major employers, and it enjoying an upward trajectory within the UK construction sector.

Since its formation in 1996, Ameon has risen to become one of the country’s leading building services infrastructure specialists, with its fingerprints on some of the most prestigious high-rise residential developments in the UK: including many of the iconic new structures forming the ever expanding Manchester city centre skyline. And the further expansion of its executive reflects the company’s continued commitment to growth.

New executives

The new appointments include principal contract manager, Dave Scott, who becomes construction director. Scott, 54, joined Ameon in 2010 as contract manager, and later served as senior contract manager. He is joined by principal commercial manager, Steve McCourt, who is appointed to the new post of commercial projects director in the move.

Ameon’s new SHEQ (safety, health, environment & quality) director, Chris Mangnall, 45, moves to the role from his former post as SHEQ advisor: a position he has held since 2018.

Phil Barrow, 50, is the newly appointed, special projects director. Barrow has been with the company for 24 years: joining as a senior craftsman heating engineer and more recently responsible for the development of the company’s special projects arm.

Moving into the newly created post of estimating director, is Scott Andrews, the company’s former estimating manager. Andrews, 31, joined to the company in 2019 to assume the role of senior estimator. Prior to joining Ameon, he worked within the electrical contracting and M & E sectors in estimating, business development and commercial management roles.

Jason Kwok, 38, a principal commercial manager, takes on the role of commercial operations director. He joined Ameon in 2003 as junior contracts manager and between 2003 and 2007 gained ONC and HNC qualifications in building services engineering.

In 2011, he graduated with an honour’s degree in building services engineering from the University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN), as part of the company’s degree apprenticeship programme.

Completing the seven appointees is Blackpool born David Connor, who is promoted to the position of design director.

Like his colleague, Jason Kwok, Connor, 38, graduated from UCLAN on Ameon’s degree apprenticeship programme, with a B Eng in building services engineering.

LSTA AND SIMIAN PARTNERSHIP AIMS TO BRIDGE SKILLS GAP

The construction industry contributes almost £100m to the UK economy each year, and despite a slowdown of economic growth, the latest CSN report is suggesting that almost 41,000 additional construction workers will be needed in the south east alone, by 2027.

SIMIAN and The Lead Sheet Training Academy (LSTA) has long recognised the need to provide accessible, high-quality specialist training opportunities for the construction industry, and we are thrilled to announce a partnership with The Lead Sheet Training Academy (LSTA) - the latest addition to our growing line of strategic alliances.

Through this collaboration, SIMIAN and LSTA will deliver short-duration CISRS scaffolding courses at the Lead Sheet Training Academy (LSTA) in East Peckham, Kent, and deliver LSTA City and Guilds accredited courses for those working with lead or hard metals, at our LASC (London Academy of Sustainable Construction) centre in Waltham Forest. This means that access to specialist construction training courses is available in more geographical areas.

Commenting on the collaboration, Dean Johns, Centre Manager at LASC, said:

“Hosting lead sheet training courses at LASC is a wonderful opportunity to increase the diversity of our construction training and provide Waltham Forest and other London residents with access to new skills in green construction. Equally, expanding our scaffolding training offerings into Kent allows for skills development and industry growth in that region.

All of this means there are now more local training options for residents of both areas, which carries the added benefit of reducing the carbon footprint of those who would normally commute a greater distance for these types of training, in addition to contributing towards the bridging of the UK’s construction skills gap.

NFB PUTS SKILLS ON PARLIAMENTARY AGENDA

The National Federation of Builders (NFB) put the spotlight on skills yesterday, when it hosted its members at the Houses of Parliament for a reception focused on ensuring the provision of quality support and improving access to training and talent are identified as top policy priorities.

In a room full of a experts from all corners of the industry, from housebuilders and contractors to scaffolders and trainers, members were addressed by the Secretary of State for Education and Skills, the Rt Hon Gillian Keegan, MP.

She commented, “I understand that it (construction) offers great opportunities here and around the world.

“We need to make sure it is showcased in schools so that young people can see what’s available to them.

“I welcome the work that the NASC and NFB are doing to highlight how dynamic and rewarding construction can be.”

This reception was held as part of a joint initiative with the National Access and Scaffolding Confederation (NASC). Mark Wakeford, incoming Chair of the NFB, stated, “The reception highlighted the need for more skilled people within our two essential and allied sectors, and allowed us to make our case for a coordinated approach across Government to work with industry to enable access to our sector and to support professionalisation.

We are confident that there are friends across Government and industry who will work together to help solve this national skills crisis.

MORE HELP FOR APPRENTICES AND ADULT TRAINEES AS SELECT DISTRIBUTES FREE LEARNING RESOURCE ABOUT PROTECTIVE DEVICES TO TRAINING CENTRES ACROSS SCOTLAND

Campaigning trade association SELECT is continuing its ongoing mission to educate and inform electricians with another important free resource aimed at apprentices and adult trainees.

Scotland’s largest construction trade body is distributing vital information about protective devices which outlines the various technologies that learners will encounter as they go through their training and into the world of work.

The three posters give clear, concise information and advice on more than 10 devices, including circuit breakers, residual current devices (RCDs) and arc fault detection devices (AFDDs), outlining how and where they should be used.

SELECT Membership Representatives are now distributing the posters to the 22 approved training centres with courses run by the Scottish Electrical Charitable Training Trust (SECTT), which manages training on behalf of the Scottish Joint Industry Board (SJIB).

The protection device posters were produced in partnership with SELECT Associate Member Electrium, who supplied the imagery.

TRIDENT BUILDING CONSULTANCY TEAMS UP WITH UKGBC TO DELIVER BESPOKE SUSTAINABILITY TRAINING

An environmentally conscious surveying practice is putting sustainability at the heart of its service provision with the creation of a new, bespoke internal training course.

Trident Building Consultancy has joined forces with the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) to create a unique course which is aimed at upskilling every building surveyor and project manager working in the business.

By providing the training across the whole of the business, Trident is ensuring sustainability and reducing Greenhouse Gas emissions is at the forefront of every survey and project it undertakes, helping clients to minimise their impact on the environment.

The training course has been developed in partnership with UKGBC, a membership organisation established to transform the sustainability of the built environment.

Distribution of the posters also coincides with an update to SELECT’s safe isolation collateral, which was successfully rolled out in 2022 and includes posters, a video and a handy, toolboxsized flowchart to remind apprentices about safe working practices.

It also follows the recent release of the association’s resources on neutral current diversion, which were also shared with training centres and will be the main theme of its 2024 Toolbox Talks tour, which will visit 12 venues in Scotland in May and June.

It comprises of online and classroombased training delivered by experts from the UKGBC, covering topics such as ESG and the built environment, decarbonising buildings, and how net zero strategies can be integrated into commercial retrofits.

BUILDING DIVERSITY IN BURMOR WITH DEGREE APPRENTICESHIPS

For Burmor Construction, getting women into the sector is a movement rather than just a moment. We spoke to Burmor and apprentice Ciara Ruane-Fountain about the firm’s farsighted commitment to create a more diverse workforce.

Women account for only 13% of the construction industry’s workforce, less than 1% of onsite roles and just 16% of director positions.

Supporting female colleagues through qualifications like Quantity Surveying Degree Apprenticeships, Burmor Construction is continuing to diversify their workforce and develop inclusive leaders.

And it’s all part of an exciting long-term plan aiming to support the ongoing mission within the industry to raise awareness of gender inequality.

Can you please tell us why Burmor Construction is so committed to levelling the playing field for women in construction?

Our commitment to building women’s presence in construction comes right from the top. In fact, our Director Patrick Burke is determined to expand the conversation about female under-representation and work out which changes can be made to redress the balance.

It’s a huge challenge one firm alone can’t solve. But we’re stepping up to highlight the issue and take positive, practical actions to make a difference.

We need to make construction more attractive for women and tap into a pool of skilled and talented workers to protect the sector’s future.

So what practical steps is Burmor Construction taking to correct the underrepresentation of women in the industry?

We’re really excited about our pilot project at Terrington St Clement, Kings Lynn, where we’re building 76 dwellings. We’re exploring every way to increase the number of female staff on the project. Because this allows us to fully understand how to remove barriers to female recruitment on a larger scale in future.

There’s a lot at stake. But 93% of employers in a recent QAA survey say ‘degree apprenticeships play a pivotal role in fostering the future growth of their organisation’, and we agree.

So Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) has advised us on covering a wide spectrum of trades and further highlighted the benefits of degree apprenticeships for employers. Benefits we’ve now seen first-hand by working with brilliant construction degree apprentices like Ciara.

Sure. Between Burmor Construction colleagues and ARU staff, there’s no shortage of help.

Definitely. Ciara’s confidence since her induction has transformed, enabling her to competently navigate contractual and technical challenges – she actually won Construction Apprentice of the Year in 2023!

Degree apprenticeships also help hone our mentors’ leadership skills and improve succession planning – because in this aging yet fast-paced industry, we need new creative talent to inject energy and ideas.

Plus, working with degree apprentices contributes to our sustainability commitments, through nurturing a local pool of skilled professionals to futureproof our business.

I’m guaranteed time at work to spend on new learning and developing the workplace realities of what I’ve learned in lectures. My lecturers are all incredibly supportive, and ARU Peterborough also provides me an assigned study coach.

AS 17M DAYS OF WORK PER YEAR ARE LOST TO MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS

AN EXPERT SHARES WAYS EMPLOYERS CAN BETTER SUPPORT STAFF

The issue of mental health in the workplace may be something businesses have gotten better at tackling in 2024, however, the problem is still one of the leading causes of workplace sickness across the UK.

The problem may be bigger than what it is being reported, as a separate survey of UK workers showed men were far less likely than women to admit to suffering with mental health in the workplace. The survey, conducted by Priory Group found 40% of men admitted to having never spoken to anyone about their mental health. It found work was the biggest cause of stress, depression or anxiety amongst the men polled.

According to data from the Labour Force Survey (LFS), the primary contributors to workplace stress, anxiety, and depression are workload pressures, unrealistic deadlines, lack of managerial support and excessive responsibility. Specifically, in skilled trade professions, there were 620 self-reported cases of work-related stress, anxiety, or depression per 100,000 workers. These findings underscore the importance of addressing these factors to promote better mental health in the workplace.

To tackle this issue and raise awareness of mental health amongst manual trade workers, Health and Safety Expert of Blue Trolley, David Davies, has shared the below guidance for employers:

“Mental wellness at work plays into the daily health and wellbeing of all of your employees, making it your responsibility as an employer to provide appropriate support to your staff. Some ways in which you can do this include:

Providing proper training for managers

In certain trade professions it can be the case that soft skills are overlooked by businesses, with the focus being more on operational performance. This is a big oversight in many industries. Any employee put in charge of managing a team should be given full manager training, giving them the skills and tools to appropriately support their team through any stress caused by their work. This will additionally safeguard businesses from a HR standpoint as it reduces risk of situations being mismanaged by unskilled managers.

Training a mental health first aider for your business

It’s required for businesses to have a physical health first aider but many businesses overlook mental health first aid. You can put a designated team member on a course to become your appointed first aider. They will be trained to appropriately support

your staff. This can be beneficial to have a third-party, outside of a team, for staff to talk to confidentially about their mental health concerns.

Creating a culture of support from the top down

Healthy working environments are set at the top and feed down into the culture seen at junior levels. Creating an atmosphere where it is acceptable to raise concerns, creating safe spaces to talk and being open and honest about the acceptance of mental health can all go a long way toward fostering a positive culture.

There are some great online resources that can be compiled and offered to your staff to point them in the right direction for mental health support as a first point of call. Mind offer a wide range of documents to use for free at work, including manager training documents and action plans for staff.

Reducing any risk for manual workers

If your staff uses machinery or tools, this could be a potential hazard if they are operating these in a poor headspace. Stress, anxiety or depression could impact their reaction times, decision making and focus. This could lead to mistakes being made which could put not only their safety, but the safety of others at risk. Speak to your employees and discuss their mindset and if they feel capable of undertaking any dangerous aspects of their role if they have made you aware of mental health issues which could impact their ability to do their job. Be sure to approach this in a respectful and understanding way to keep them involved in the decisions being made on their behalf.”

MACHINE TECHNOLOGY ENSURES BALMORAL MAZE IS FIT FOR A KING

Construction technology specialist SITECH®UK and Ireland has supported in the creation of the giant thistle-shaped maze at Balmoral due to open this year.

Civil engineering company Nicol of Skene in Aberdeenshire called in machine technology experts, SITECH as UK authorised dealer for Trimble® machine control systems to install Trimble Earthworks grade control to the six-ton excavator used to create the paths and planting areas for the maze.

The SITECH team trained operator Liam McAllan, so he could achieve the near zero tolerances needed to create the 1.2-metrewide curving paths and 0.8-metre-wide

beds which will become the 6ft high walls of the maze once fully grown.

Liam says: “I’d not used Trimble Earthworks, but the system was easy to learn which was important, as working in such a small area meant there was no room for error.

Without the GPS we would have needed an engineer on site throughout the entire project to ensure everything was accurate.

The team at Nicol of Skene used Trimble Business Centre to convert the original architect drawings into a 3D model which was then uploaded to the machine,

then measured and calibrated from two positions by the expert team at SITECH.

SITECH regional sales consultant for Scotland, Liam Payne, said employing the technology to create a maze for the King was a truly unique opportunity.

“This really shows how site positioning systems can do so much more than dig holes,” he said.

“Using Trimble® Earthworks machine technology for this project saved Nicol of Skene considerable engineer man hours and gave them complete peace of mind that they could deliver exactly what was wanted by the King.”

As a result, the maze groundworks were successfully completed within 12 weeks.

HEATING A HOT TOPIC AS FUTURE HOMES STANDARD EDGES CLOSER

It’s been heading our way for a while, but with the Future Homes Standard (FHS) on the horizon, housebuilders need to be prepared, and heating should be high on their agenda.

For decades, gas has been the go-to for new homes - everyone is used to the infrastructure, and installers know how to fit the boilers. But, now that Scotland introduced its new build gas boiler ban, and with the rest of the UK following suit when the FHS comes in next year, all new build developments are having to consider alternative forms of heating.

What alternative solutions are available? There are a handful to choose from, one of those being every property has an air source heat pump. It’s an option, but not necessarily for everyone. Buyers may not want the external unit attached to their property, and developments short on outside space, such as flats, face obvious installation challenges.

One option could be Networked Ground Source Heat Pumps—a 21st-century heating solution that can play a huge role in making new homes FHS compliant. Crucially, for housebuilders and

homeowners used to working and living with gas, installing and using them will feel familiar.

The system, which Kensa pioneered in the UK, mimics gas by providing energy to the home via infrastructure in the ground, which is converted into heating and hot water through a white box in the home, but without burning fossil fuels. The biggest part of the installation, drilling the boreholes and laying pipework for the shared ground array, which circulates the water/anti-freeze mix to the heat pumps in each home, can be implemented as part of the utility installation, with little to no impact to the development program. The pipework is hidden underground and out of sight, and the heat pumps themselves are housed within the property.

Until recently, the investment in the installation of this underground infrastructure has been a barrier to the wider uptake. However, Kensa has introduced a funding model that removes the upfront installation cost for developers. Like with gas, a private utility company completes and owns the underground network of boreholes and pipes, and those with a connection pay a standing charge to connect their heat pump.

There are also positives for the prospective buyer. Ground source heat pumps are the most efficient of the renewable alternatives and therefore provide the lowest possible running costs. Compared to individual ASHP’s, homeowners get to retain that extra outside space and, as they’re stored inside, the heat pumps have an expected 20-25-year lifespan, providing low lifetime cost of ownership. Finally, the network lasts 100+ years, enabling long-term energy security.

To make this model work, manufacturers need to produce space-saving units that can still deliver a home’s heating and hot water needs. Kensa applied this when developing its Shoebox NX heat pump - a unit small enough to fit in a cupboard, simple to install, and capable of heating anything from a flat to a five-bed home.

Kensa has already delivered this solution across the UK, including for new-build projects in Bristol, Cambridge, and more, presenting an option to help housebuilders navigate the net-zero transition and avoid getting into hot water around FHS.

Installing 14 of its powerful ceiling hung and wall-mounted heaters and 16 controllers from scratch, the new system has given visitors a warm, comfortable and sustainable place to worship, whatever the weather.

Taking a closer look at the project…

Futureproofing sensitively

Reducing energy consumption and increasing its efficiency is a goal that touches on every part of UK business and industry, especially against the backdrop of the drive towards Net Zero 2050.

It’s especially important for the UK’s Eastern Orthodox Church, which has over 250 properties nationwide. With strict and ambitious ESG commitments, futureproofing these assets in the face of tighter climate change regulation, whilst delivering their core function is a real challenge.

Some of its sites are centuries old, and it can be difficult to upgrade facilities here. One particular area of concern is how to heat these large, high-ceilinged, and poorly insulated structures. Crucially, visitors need to be comfortable, but simultaneously ensure utility bills and waste are kept to a bare minimum.

Warming-up the congregation

It was an issue at the forefront of the church’s mind when they took over the lease of St Helen’s Chapel, Colchester, Essex in September 2020; especially as the 16th Century, Grade-II building had no existing HVAC system.

Now visitors can worship in maximum comfort even on the chilliest winter mornings.

The congregation bore the brunt of this unfortunate situation over three consecutive winters, where temperatures would sometimes plummet down to 1°C. It made the church a particularly uncomfortable place to worship.

Initial use of oil-fired heaters proved futile, failing to provide the necessary levels of warmth and releasing a large amount of CO2. Next, industrial fan heaters were introduced, to little effect; noisy, they also proved a significant disruption to services.

Following further research, they decided to trial shortwave infrared heating, approaching Shadow Industrial on the recommendation of their electrician, who had installed its solutions on previous projects.

A heating revelation

Shortwave infrared heating is one of the fastest-growing and disruptive categories in the heating and ventilation sector. Simply, the technology works by emitting focused radiant heat through a precisionengineered smooth parabola reflector; it heats the person, not the air around them. Wall-mounted and directed downward at individuals, the energy creates a comfortable and instant warmth, mimicking the gentle heat of the sun.

ecclesiastical buildings as it’s easy to install, with limited impact on the structural fabric, in addition to its effective heating function and low energy consumption. It is also unaffected by changes in air movement, making it particularly efficacious in drafty settings such as those found in heritage sites, like St. Helen’s Chapel.

Unrivalled performance, at a reasonable price

Installed in 2023, Shadow Industrial’s systems have significantly improved the comfort of congregants, allowing them to remove coats during services. The impact was particularly felt among older people and children, for whom extreme cold can have an adverse impact on health during extended services.

Initially, the client was worried their tight budget would not be enough to fully equip the church’s interiors with heaters. However, it proved far cheaper than traditional electric or gas central heating.

The entire system and installation totalled £20,000. Putting this in context, they were initially quoted £100,000 for underfloor heating; this represents a massive 80% upfront saving, with greater performance – a no brainer decision.

ARNOLD ROAD REQUIRED BOTH STANDARD AND BESPOKE SCHÖCK ISOKORBS

A 100% affordable housing scheme at Arnold Road, in Bow, East London, will create 62 homes in two mid-rise buildings of six and eight storeys. Designed by architects Henley Halebrown, the scheme – which was shortlisted for the 2020 Housing Design Awards – is cleverly woven into a compact triangular site. The architectural concept breaks what might have been one long building block into two separate buildings, permitting morning and afternoon light to penetrate between the buildings. This reduces their impact and improves the microclimate for residents and neighbours as well as increasing the surface area of the new buildings to achieve 80% dual aspect homes. Together the buildings frame an entrance courtyard designed to encourage residents to meet and talk, and children to play together.

Thermally broken recessed balcony terraces

The heavy masonry façades incorporate recessed balcony terraces and Schöck have supplied Isokorb structural thermal breaks for both the in-situ concrete balconies and the precast concrete façade banding. On the eight-storey South Block the inset balconies are supported on two sides using the Schöck Isokorb T type Q. This is a load bearing thermal break element for transferring shear forces on supported balconies, recessed balconies and for occasional peak shear forces. The six-storey North Block features typical internal corner balconies with external corner column support and again features the Schöck Isokorb T type Q, along with the T type H for the transmission of planned horizontal forces parallel and/or perpendicular to the insulation level.

thermal insulation element for curtain parapets and balustrades, which transfers normal forces, moments and shear forces. The T type K is also used and is a load bearing thermal break element for free cantilevered balcony construction and transfers negative moments and positive shear forces. For Arnold Road the product had to be specially adapted and required a bespoke design 500mm in length – but supplied in 1m lengths. The precaster, Barnsley-based Con-Tech Services Ltd, then cut the Isokorb in half on site for the required detail. To avoid any clash of reinforcement, the two covers were designed and detailed with 50mm cover required on the north and south elevation and 30mm cover required on the east and west elevation.

The widest range in Europe

The fully compliant and dependable Schöck Isokorb range offers the widest selection of structural thermal break solutions from any European supplier; and in the UK enables projects to meet full compliance with the necessary Building Regulations (and the impending Future Homes Standard criteria where relevant). In addition to the Isokorb types used on this project, there are also solutions for concrete-to-steel, steel-to-steel, renovation projects – and even a maintenance free alternative to wrapped parapets. All products have the security of independent BBA Certification, which provides NHBC approval. The temperature factor requirement (fRSI) used to indicate condensation risk, which must be equal to, or greater than 0.75 for residential buildings, is also easily met by incorporating the Isokorb.

FOUR 30M SPAN CRANES FOR BRISTOL PORT

Lifting specialists RHC Lifting Limited have recently designed, manufactured, installed, and commissioned four 30m span overhead double gantry cranes in a new building for The Bristol Port Company. These cranes were RHC Lifting largest and heaviest cranes to date.

Located within the newly built C Shed, two of the cranes have a 7.5t safe working load, with the two larger cranes for lifting components having a 35t capacity.

All four cranes have a 12m height of lift and were built using SWF Krantechnik’s crane components with inverter-controlled hoisting and travel for smooth and precise control. The cranes were supplied with sway control technology to minimise load-sway, maximise movement speeds, and higher load positioning for accuracy and increased safety. Lights and sounders were fitted to warn operators of any overload events. Four sets of LED lights were installed on the underside of each crane’s beam to improve the light conditions underneath the crane.

All cranes were fitted with Autec joystick radio remote control systems, the AJC transmitters are colour-coded to match the corresponding crane and are fitted with proportional joysticks for accurate speed selection.

As a solution provider, RHC Lifting also designed and installed the crane rail along the 160m gantry. This process started with design cooperation with the steel structure manufacturer, who predrilled the gantry beams according to RHC Lifting’s design to reduce site work. RHC Lifting then installed 320m of A65 crane rail and fitted and torqued 1,100 gantry rail clips. Further work included aligning the rails to BS ISO 124881:2012 and welding the rail joints.

The two 7.5t cranes were installed using a 70t mobile crane positioned inside the building, with RHC Lifting’s Appointed Person, Lift Supervisor and Slinger & Signallers working together to lift the crane safely onto the rails. Due to the size of the 35t cranes which were

considerably larger and heavier, the lift required a 350t mobile crane which was positioned outside the building. The mobile crane’s hook block was then lowered through a section of the roof which was left out specifically for the crane installation.

Both 35t cranes were installed over a two-day period. The cranes were installed in three lifts with the first beam with the walkway and the end carriages weighing 16t, then lowering the box beam with festoon onto the end carriages at 11t per beam, before lifting on the hoist unit at 2.7t.

Also included in the project was the installation of a 160m 3M 8mm horizontal lifeline down the full length of the crane level walkway and two KATT Safety ladder systems with intermediate rest platforms. These combine to ensure the safety of engineers accessing the cranes for LOLER inspections and maintenance visits.

Andrew Cayzer, RHC Lifting’s Director, who was the Project Lead for this job, said “This was a fantastic job to be involved with, it was impressive to see the four cranes running at the end of the project and the teamwork of all RHC Lifting’s employees working together to deliver one our most outstanding projects.

With RHC Lifting being an independent company we were able to select the most suitable subcontractors to deliver this project to match the customer needs.

RHC Lifting load tested the cranes and gantry before handing over the cranes to Bristol Port.
