KENT DEVELOPER GIVES £20,000 TO LOCAL PROJECTS
A leading Kent developer has demonstrated its commitment to the local community by providing more than £20,000 of funding for local projects.
The team behind Hyde New Homes’ Rochester Riverside development joined forces with UK housebuilding and urban regeneration company, Countryside Partnership, to spearhead a number of initiatives designed to benefit and improve the region.
Medway Open Studios & Arts Festival, Medway Pride 2022, and Kick and Connect football club are just some of the schemes funded by The Rochester Riverside Community Board, which oversees funding for community projects across Rochester on behalf of Hyde New Homes and Countryside.
The first ever British Sign Language festival – BUP – also gained vital support from the developer as well as St Peter’s Infant School on Holcombe Road, which benefited from new playground equipment. Improvements to the Rochester school’s outdoors area included new resources, a sheltered sand pit, builder’s bench, play cottage and a new AstroTurf surface.
But it wasn’t just monetary donations that the developer has offered. Hyde New Homes has also held regular social events, arranged by Countryside, at its developments across Kent for the community to enjoy. These included a
summer barbecue – which provided a fantastic opportunity for neighbours at Rochester Riverside to meet each other and ask the Estate Management team any important questions. There was also a fun-filled Jubilee street party, and this proved such a success that another celebration has been planned for King Charles III’s coronation.
Most recently, Rochester Riverside’s play area – Furrell Park – enjoyed its official opening and children at the development were invited to be the first to use the play equipment.
The stylish new development is set within 10 acres of open space. It overlooks a newly regenerated riverside walk and enjoys stunning views across the Medway and inland towards the historic Rochester Castle and Cathedral. The sought-after location also boasts excellent transport links. Rochester train station is just minutes away, so London and the rest of the South Coast is within easy reach.
Current availability includes twobedroom apartments starting from £327,500. Buyers can secure a 40% share of the home with a 10% deposit of £13,400. Along with a mortgage, they will then pay a subsidised rent to Hyde New Homes with the ability to purchase further shares in the future. Through this “staircasing” process, homeowners will eventually have the chance to own up to 100% of their home.

FHP SECURES LONDON’S GREENEST LOGISTICS
HUB
Building services and engineering consultants FHP has completed a contract to support the multi-million-pound design and construction of the most sustainable logistics hub in London.
The work saw FHP provide a package of RIBA Stage 5 mechanical, public health and 3D Revit design services to the leading developer of modern warehouses and industrial property SEGRO, which recently completed the development of eight grade ‘A’ industrial units with office accommodation and landscaped outdoor terraces on a Zone 3 site in Tottenham.
Achieving a BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ status and an EPC ‘A+’ rating, SEGRO Park Tottenham, which offers almost 200,000 sq. ft. of commercial space incorporating photovoltaic cells, green walls and external amenity areas, reflects a new generation of industrial and logistics parks on the fringes of central London.
FHP was closely involved in the construction design phase to meet occupiers’ wellness and wellbeing needs; utilising carbon negative* concepts to improve energy efficiency while delivering high levels of water services, ventilation and drainage across the site building occupiers.
This is the latest success for rapidly growing FHP, which currently employs 52 people and continues to recruit staff to strengthen its team to meet strong demand as it targets revenues in excess of £3.5 million in 2022.

CAMBRIDGE SCIENCE PARK
When architects Scott Brownrigg were given a brief to create a new gateway to Cambridge Science Park they knew the building had to be impressive to attract the desired high tech and Research and Development companies.
The design features a colonnade sweeping across the front of the building echoing the curve of the spine road and a new public space. The column spacing guides occupants and visitors to the entrance – a GEZE Slimdrive SCR curved automatic sliding door.
The building has a BREEAM Excellent rating for its design so the Slimdrive SCR was the perfect complement. The circular entrance features two sets of automatic bi-parting curved glass sliding doors, creating a lobby that minimises heat loss or gain and so helps to contribute to the building’s environmental credentials
In addition the Slimdrive SCR automatic curved sliding door provides a light and airy all-glass lobby entrance which blends seamlessly into the façade and the large
glass atrium, it combines high performance with unobtrusive operation.
Inside the operator’s deep canopy an integrated air curtain was installed to further minimise any heat loss and maintain the aesthetics of the building.
The Slimdrive SCR automatic operator also provides uninhibited access and so meets the demands of Part M, BS 8300 and EN 16005, whilst the access control system ensures security.
Recognising the outstanding design of the building, the Cambridge Science Park has been shortlisted for the 2023 British Council for Offices (BCO) Awards. The BCO’s primary objective is to define excellence in office space.
Ross Mcwatt, Associate Architect at Scott Brownrigg said ‘We have worked with GEZE several times, they have the same focus as we do in terms combining sustainability, accessibility and aesthetics.
Richard Richardson-Derry, National Specification Manager at GEZE UK added ‘This is an outstanding building, that meets many demands, we were delighted to play a part in creating an entrance and achieving the criteria of the brief.

SCOTTISH RUGBY LEGEND TAKES UP ROLE AS SEAMAB AMBASSADOR
Chris Paterson, Scottish rugby’s leading points scorer and second-most capped male player, has become an Ambassador for children’s [Kinross-shire] charity, Seamab Care and Education.
The rugby legend has taken up the role to support Seamab’s plans for a new purpose-built school for the children in its care. Looking after some of Scotland’s most vulnerable children, Seamab provides a nurturing environment to help those who have suffered abuse and neglect in their young lives, but currently operating from an old residential property, the charity urgently needs a new school.
In his new role, Chris will take an active part in the charity’s fundraising efforts, helping to raise the £5.5m needed to build the new school. Already backed by some of Scotland’s leading property companies who are providing expertise and services to deliver the plans, the project needs another £2.5 million to see the new school become a reality.
Touched by the commitment of Seamab and its staff to the challenges they face, Chris, who trained as a PE teacher, will also support the school’s sports and outdoor activities by running rugby sessions with the children.
LENDLEASE
AND STEM
RETURNERS
FORM NEW PARTNERSHIP TO HELP PEOPLE RETURN TO WORK AFTER A CAREER BREAK
Lendlease Europe has formed a new partnership with STEM Returners to help people restart their career following a career break.
The Lendlease STEM Returners Programme will be available across the organisation’s divisions including Build to Rent, Construction and Consulting.
STEM Returners, a leading organisation in the UK in returner programmes, will source candidates and provide them with additional support including advice, career coaching, and mentoring; ensuring applicants are ready and confident to return to work.
Annual research from STEM Returners (The STEM Returners Index) shows the challenges people who have taken a career break face when trying to return to work – recruitment bias being the main barrier to entry.
Sixty-six percent of STEM professionals on a career break say they are finding the process of attempting to return to work either difficult or very difficult and nearly half (46%) of participants said
they felt bias because of a lack of recent experience.
STEM Returners has recently launched the 2023 STEM Returners Index, an annual survey to understand STEM professionals’ experiences of trying to re-enter the sector after a career break. The STEM Returners Index is open to all STEM professions who have had a gap in their career or who are attempting to return to work or who have recently returned to work and will enable STEM Returners to further understand the barriers people face, track the progress UK STEM industries are making, and shine a light on the change needed to create fair opportunities for all.
The 2023 STEM Returners Index will be open until 30 June and is available at https://online1.snapsurveys.com/ STEM-Returners-Index-2023
Since STEM Returners first launched in 2017, more than 380 STEM Returners candidates have joined programmes across the UK. To view STEM Returners opportunities, visit https://www. stemreturners.com/placements/

SISK BREAKS GROUND ON NEW £300M GEM OF BIRMINGHAM’S JEWELLERY QUARTER
John Sisk & Son (Sisk) and Moda Living, one of the UK’s leading developers and operators of rental communities, has broken ground on a pioneering new rental neighbourhood in Birmingham, beginning the transformation of a site left undeveloped for more than 70 years.
Redeveloping the Ludgate Hill Carpark, the £302m Great Charles Street neighbourhood will be situated in the city’s famous Jewellery Quarter offering 722
best-in-class new rental homes across four blocks spanning 6 to 39 stories, with breathtaking views across the city. The neighbourhood will be delivered by Sisk, who were responsible for the successful delivery of 481-home neighbourhood Moda, The Mercian on Broad Street.
Designed in partnership with the nationally acclaimed Ryder Architecture, Great Charles Street will include state-of-the-art amenities including a 24/7 gym fitness
centre and concierge, private dining rooms, co-working areas, resident sky lounges, roof terraces, cinema rooms and more. The neighbourhood will also feature new landscaped green spaces and public realm, as well as community amenities including, shops and cafes. Great Charles Street will target leading ESG certifications, following in the footsteps of Moda, The Mercian on Broad Street which was the first residential building in Birmingham to secure three-star Fitwel accreditation, and uses certified 100% renewable electricity.
Delivery of the new project will add an estimated £92m of gross added value to the West Midlands, creating around 470 new construction jobs. Moda and Sisk will continue their successful Skills Hub partnership with the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) which is already helping to maximise local employment and training opportunities across the West Midlands.
This partnership, spear-headed with Mayor of the West Midlands Andy Street, established a training hub during the building of Moda Living’s The Mercian neighbourhood and has been operating since 2018. The hub has already supported more than 80,000 hours of work and 140

employment opportunities specifically for local people – including seven apprenticeships – by offering construction training and a guaranteed job interview after completing a 20-day course.
By the end of Moda Great Charles Street’s construction, Sisk estimate that at least another 240,000 hours will have been completed by local people, from apprentices to graduates, reinforcing Moda Living and Sisk’s commitment to Birmingham.
The beginning of work on Great Charles Street was marked with a special ceremony attended by Birmingham City Council, West Midlands Mayor Andy Street and other key stakeholders.
The £302m neighbourhood has been backed by the largest deal for a buildto-rent project seen outside of London, with funding from Harrison Street, NFU
Mutual and Apache Capital and a £188m development loan from Precede.
Alan Rodger, Managing Director, John Sisk & Son, said: “Sisk is delighted to begin works with Moda Living on its Great Charles Street development. Our enduring relationship with Moda Living is founded on our capabilities and relevant experience in the high-rise residential sector across Birmingham and other major cities in the UK. The project will create a landmark entrance to the city centre and provides us with the opportunity to build upon our work with Birmingham City Council, the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) and our trusted Supply Chain to create training, jobs, and quality accommodation for the people of the West Midlands.”
Andy Street, the Mayor of the West Midlands, said: “It is so exciting to see the bomb site finally being developed after being left untouched since the Second World War. This will remove one of the blots on the city’s landscape, and continue the quite incredible transformation of the city centre.
“It is great too to not only see Moda Living and Sisk partner again after their efforts at The Mercian, but also to see they remain committed to working with us to continue our training programme together to ensure local employment is maximised through this development.
“Best of luck to the team, and I can’t wait to watch this project grow up from the ground.”
Tony Brooks, Managing Director at Moda said: “Breaking ground on our second
development in Birmingham is a huge milestone for us. The city is going through an exciting evolution and we’re proud to be part of its transforming skyline, as well as creating impact for the local jobs and skills market –it’s something we’ve been committed to since 2018 and will continue doing so for many years to come.”
“The journey to starting work on this key central site has been a huge exercise in collaboration with Birmingham City Council, and I’m confident the result will be testament to what can be achieved when the public and private sectors work in true partnership. I look forward to continuing to work with the council, Sisk and our other stakeholders to deliver this new gem of a neighbourhood to the Jewellery Quarter.”
Birmingham City Council Leader, Councillor Ian Ward, also commented: “The breaking of ground at the Ludgate Hill Car Park site opens another exciting chapter in Birmingham’s ongoing transformation, underlining our growing reputation as a place to live, work and invest. This is very much a team effort and we are delighted to be working with Moda Living and Sisk to ensure that the people and businesses of Birmingham benefit from our ongoing success.”

CADDICK CONSTRUCTION REACHES HALFWAY MILESTONE AT LEEDS VALLEY PARK
With construction work now well underway, progress is taking shape on-site at Leeds Valley Park, with three of the six steel unit frames now erected and fit-out due to commence imminently.
This £26.2 million construction project is set to bring six high quality, modern industrial units ranging in size from 25,000 sq ft to 70,000 sq ft. The units have heights ranging from 8 to 12 metres, dock level access to all except the smallest unit, office and welfare accommodation on the first floor, with LED lighting and Air Source Heat Pumps. They offer excellent space for a wide range of logistics, distribution and manufacturing uses.
All six buildings have been designed with sustainability in mind and are set to achieve a ‘Very Good’ BREEAM rating upon completion, and target EPC A rating. An attractive proposition for occupiers looking to future-proof, by design, the development will be PV ready/installed, as well as including electric vehicle charging points and cycle provision.
The units have a fantastic location in south east Leeds and the site benefits from being situated between Junction 44 of the M1 and Junction 7 of the M621, enabling great connectivity to Leeds, the local motorway network and beyond.
Work so far completed includes the cladding and glazing on the first unit and the installation of mains services and primary drainage, with construction of the fourth steel frame nearing completion.
The next phase of works will include further cladding and glazing, internal concrete slabs and substation installation. Fit-out works are also due to commence imminently, with overall completion scheduled for November this year.
The flagship employment site has been brought forward by multisector property developer, Caddick Developments in conjunction with owners Greater Manchester Pension Fund, with Caddick Construction leading
project delivery. Working in partnership across the Caddick Group, the two businesses have undertaken swift and efficient delivery, bringing much-needed Grade A industrial space to Leeds and providing a welcome economic boost to the local area, supporting >300 jobs during construction, with an additional 500 jobs created when the units are occupied.
Avison Young, as retained advisor to the Greater Manchester Pension Fund (GMPF), advised on the purchase, and is now actively marketing the site, alongside joint agents, Carter Towler.
Paul Dodsworth, Managing Director at Caddick Construction commented: “It’s brilliant to see this flagship employment scheme really start to take shape at Leeds Valley Park.
“Once complete, this development will offer local businesses a great opportunity to map their operations only 15 minutes from central Leeds, just between Junction 44 of the M1 and Junction 7 of the M621.
“Working alongside Caddick Developments means that we can ensure the very best service across the board, efficient processes are in use and all aspects of the development and operations married with the vision from Caddick Developments.”
Jim Dyson, Director at Caddick Developments, also commented: “When it comes to urban logistics, connectivity is key, and Leeds Valley Park benefits from the unrivalled motorway connections of Leeds’ premier industrial and distribution location.
Rob Oliver, Principal at Avison Young, advised: “The units are attracting considerable interest from both companies already in the area, and are looking to establish a first Leeds facility. We are in active discussions with a number of parties, looking to take occupation of a new, high specification, sustainable, facility before the end of the year.”
Our work with Caddick Construction to bring forward this 300,000 sq ft scheme is a great example of how the Caddick Group has the agility to collaborate across disciplines and create exemplar, market-leading developments that meet the needs of different locations and occupiers.

WJA LAUNCHES EASY-TO-USE WATER JETTING INJURY GUIDE
Construction first aiders are being urged to use an updated treatment guide based on a ground-breaking study into water jetting injuries that has been accessed 10,000 times around the world.
The Water Jetting Association injury treatment algorithm gives step-bystep best practical guidance on the treatment of water jetting injuries from first response through to definitive hospital care.
It has now been created in an A4 version, making it easier to view online and as a printed booklet, with colourcoded sections so users can easily follow a patient’s journey through a treatment pathway.
Water jetting is used on construction sites for surface cleaning and preparation, for example scabbling, concrete hydrodemolition, sewer and
culvert cleaning, pressure washing, and cutting.
However, fluid injection injuries, caused by water jets, are not well understood outside the water jetting industry, resulting incorrect first aid responses and misdiagnosis by medical teams.
The WJA’s injury treatment algorithm helps first aiders, paramedics and clinicians optimise treatment, reducing the risk of death, long-term disability or unnecessarily prolonged periods of recovery.
The guide was created using evidence compiled by a study, funded by the WJA, the member association for the water jetting industry, and carried out by a team of eminent emergency and trauma doctors.
Dr Sancho Rodriguez-Villar, an intensive care consultant at Kings College
Hospital, London, who led the research, said: “Our study has been accessed more than 10,000 times in four years. It is highly likely that doctors and surgeons around the world are using it to guide their treatment. We urge first aid teams on construction sites to also download the algorithm for use in emergencies.”
The WJA has developed codes of practice and City & Guilds accredited training courses which are respected for setting standards for water jetting internationally.
Fluid injection injuries can be caused with water pressures as low as 7 bar, or 100 psi – while water pressures for industrial applications can exceed 1,700 bar, or 24,650 psi.

As demand for additional homes remains high, new build properties continue to spring up across the UK at a rapid pace. Moving into a brand new residence holds a lot of appeal for tenants and buyers, but new builds can pose a number of specific drainage challenges that need to be handled carefully.
Lanes Group handles these matters on a regular basis, and here we share guidance on the most common problems that can arise when developing the drainage infrastructure of a new build property, and the steps that should be taken to overcome them.
The most common drainage problems for new build properties
New and untested systems
By their very nature, new builds haven’t had the time to stress-test their drainage systems and establish how the new pipes and plumbing will cope with the realities of day-to-day use.
Drainage is one of the first things to be completed in a build, but a mistake with the drainage system may only become apparent once the building is complete and residents have moved in, making these problems difficult to correct in advance.
Issues integrating piping into the preexisting infrastructure
One of the biggest challenges involved in creating a working drainage system for a new build property is ensuring the freshly-laid pipes connect properly to the pre-existing brownfield infrastructure. When mistakes - such as selecting the wrong pipe size or gradient - are made in this process, it can cause serious damage.
Garden drainage problems and flooding risks
Garden drainage problems are common in developments involving the construction of multiple houses, as many new housing schemes do not install enough drainage channels to keep costs down. This results in a higher risk of flooding and waterlogging due to drainage overspills while the gardens are still settling and maturing.
How to create high-quality drainage for new builds
Long-term planning
The design of the drainage system should be future-proofed wherever possible with adequate capacity to meet foreseeable future demands. It is also a good idea to create plenty of access points to facilitate maintenance.
Adhere closely to SuDS legislation
Sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) help to minimise pollution and any impact on local water bodies, and have been recommended for most new-build premises in many parts of the UK, as well as being compulsory in Wales. It is essential to consult the relevant
legislation before commencing work. Exercise care when connecting to existing pipes
When connecting to a pre-existing drain or sewer, try to make sure this is situated at least 0.8m lower than the ground floor level to avoid blockages and water flow issues.
Take into account the flow of water away from the property
The size of the roof needs to be considered in terms of the amount of surface water it will generate. It is also important to think about non-porous patios and driveways, which should flow towards permeable ground rather than towards public roads.
Encourage good drain care from day one Residents should be encouraged to be proactive about drain care and adopt good practices from day one, in order to prevent future problems from arising. This means avoiding flushing items like fat, oil, grease, wet wipes, food waste, bandages and sanitary products.
Drainage issues can cause untold headaches for residents in new builds, and it is important to think about potential issues before they arise in order to avoid lengthy and costly repair jobs. By doing so, those in charge of the project can ensure they deliver a drainage system that will continue to perform properly in the long term,
Drainage is one of the first things to be completed in a build, but a mistake with the drainage system may only become apparent once the building is complete and residents have moved in, making these problems difficult to correct in advance.

LAND & WATER HELPS RETURN HISTORIC LAKE BACK TO ITS FORMER SHAPE AT BOUGHTON HOUSE
Working at historical British landmarks is nothing new for leading wet civil engineering firm Land & Water as it announces the commencement of works at Boughton House, having been engaged by Buccleuch, to return Star Pond, which dates back to the 1700s, to its original shape.
Situated in Northamptonshire, Boughton House dates back to 1528 when it was once the home of the Montagu family who took style inspiration from the French, leading to the House being coined the ‘English Versailles’. In the 20th century it became home to the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry who wished to preserve this national treasure.
Over the last three decades, Buccleuch has been working to uncover long lost waterways and lakes dating back over 300 years. As part of this, Land & Water will be restoring Star Pond which earnt
its name through its original star shape. Having become built up with silt, the wet civil engineering firm will be carrying out dredging works as well as ensuring the pond cascades back to link with other estate waterways and the River Ise.
Roger Baines, Contracts Manager at Land & Water, said: “We are delighted to be working at another historical landscape and preserving the future of the waterways at Boughton House.
“As well as the works to return Star Pond to its former glory, we will also be installing an aquatic channel to enable fish and other aquatic life to easily travel down to the River Ise, as well as to support flood protection.
“The environment is front and centre of all that we do at Land & Water and as part of this we want to ensure that we are supporting the creation of habitats to increase biodiversity.”
David Cullum, Parks and Gardens Manager at Boughton Estate says: “In their heyday, the gardens were considered to be among
the largest and finest in the country and in the last 30 years, considerable work has taken place to restore various features.
“It is an absolute privilege to be involved in this next exciting step of this journey and the restoration of Star Pond.”
“Everything we do should have a positive impact on the environment, whether that be designed or natural. We are excited to be able to do both with the restoration of Star Pond.”
Land & Water is due to be working at Boughton House until the end of summer. This coincides with another historical project at World Heritage Site, Blenheim Palace, to remove 300,000m3 of silt from Queen Pool to preserve the legacy of the waterway for years to come.

TACKLING GENDER INEQUALITY IN THE PLUMBING AND HEATING INDUSTRY
With a clear need to encourage more women to consider careers in plumbing and heating, and a concerning skills gap to be filled, CEO of the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE), Kevin Wellman, discusses the problem of gender inequality.
A recent Government report found that 95% of UK plumbers are male, suggesting a systemic issue within our industry that we have a duty to correct. While society is taking steps toward gender equality, the plumbing and heating industry still has much to do to become a viable and appealing option for women – especially those leaving school, in their early teens. We are currently experiencing a major skills shortage so it’s more important than ever that the industry broadens its horizons.
Why do so few women join the industry?
Part of the problem is that young girls tend to be steered away from engineering. One study found that just one-third of girls between the ages of 11 and 19 perceive engineering as a desirable profession, compared with more than half of boys the same age Data paints a picture of girls having a similar level of interest as boys, but that interest wains as they get older. At GCSE level, 48% of pupils in STEM subjects are girls, but by undergraduate level, that plummets to 16%, despite women being more likely to join higher education. Starting at school age, with careers advisors and teachers taking a leading role, it would benefit children and teens to be informed on the benefits of a future in engineering, while being given opportunities to explore the subject for themselves.
Recently we announced that we are providing education resources in partnership with the Multiply project, aimed at improving maths and numeracy in the UK. More must be done, however, if gender parity is going to be achieved and if we are to bridge the current skills gap.
As an educational charity, the CIPHE has a duty to dedicate resources to this topic and, as such, we support schools and colleges across the UK and provide resources for apprentices and college students. We are currently working with schools in Birmingham to introduce pupils to plumbing, heating and renewables and support greater funding for the Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technician apprenticeship. Recently we announced that we are providing education resources in partnership with the Multiply project, aimed at improving maths and numeracy in the UK. More must be done, however, if gender parity is going to be achieved and if we are to bridge the current skills gap.
The future of plumbing and heating
It is key that young people of any gender are educated on the potential that plumbing and heating engineering has for them and their future. It must be made common knowledge that university is not the only path to a successful and profitable career, and that a variety of pathways into plumbing and heating, including paid apprenticeships are available. If we are able to increase the esteem of our industry in the eyes
of young people, and especially girls, we will soon see the benefits that gender diversity has to offer heating and plumbing.
One woman who is having a positive impact on the plumbing and heating industry is Emma Wray EngTech MCIPHE RP. Emma has faced many challenges as a woman in engineering but continues to work hard to cement her success in the water industry. In September 2018, she was named Installer’s Apprentice of the Month and is now a water regulations inspector for Yorkshire Water. She presents seminars to plumbing students and to engineers so they can better understand what water regulations are and why it is so important to comply with them. Visible role models will play a critical part in encouraging more women and girls into careers in the plumbing and heating industry and all of us at the CIPHE applaud Emma’s dedication to her chosen career and the impact she is having.

CONSTRUCTION WORK COMPLETE ON NEW WOMEN’S FACILITY AT HMP & YOI STIRLING
The Scottish Prison Service has opened the doors for the first time to the new £85.7m HMP& YOI Stirling, a replacement facility for HMP Cornton Vale.
The custodial establishment – which will open this summer - welcomed cabinet secretary for justice and home affairs, Angela Constance MSP for a preview visit last week, after construction work was completed and the building handed over.
The women’s facility, designed by Holmes Miller architects and built by Morrison Construction Scotland, is a UK-first for its ambitious design, aimed at creating a therapeutic environment suitable for rehabilitation and wellbeing.
The 100-place establishment is split into three clear zones: a two-storey front-ofhouse which forms the public face of the new facility, a central hub, and residential accommodation.
The residential zone features a series of adjacent single storey ‘houses’ - three main houses, a young offenders house, and series of specific facilities including a mother and baby unit and a progression unit - arranged around a central garden space.
Each individual house has a separate entrance, a suite of shared accommodation, and a central activity space with full height glazing, which all bedrooms can be directly accessed from.
Operational and communal spaces, including accommodation to process arrivals, kitchens, a dining area, laundry facilities, a health centre, fitness room and library, are located within the central hub.
A separate assessment centre has also been created in the grounds, which consists of up to 25 places for women entering custody to undergo an initial assessment.
Speaking of the project, David Gardner, Project Director at Holmes Miller said: “The significant changes in the way women are held in custody in Scotland provided the opportunity for us to completely rethink how the design of this new facility could influence outcomes. We worked hard not only to deliver the client’s operational requirements, but also to exceed aspirations to create a positive, therapeutic environment which assists in the rehabilitation of women, offering safety and hope. It has been a complex project, but a real privilege to work on. Gaining an understanding of the client needs involved in-depth stakeholder input, but being able to bring their ambitions to life has given the design team a huge sense of achievement.”
The facility is finished mainly in buff brick, with metal pitched roofs and large expanses of glazing, with natural patinated zinc and timber cladding
used as accents. The buildings sit amid carefully-considered landscaping, which draws upon the value of the grounds as a therapeutic environment and healing resource, to help achieve a mindset for rehabilitation and reintegration.
Alan Cadger, Project Director at Holmes Miller added: “Key to how we brought the concept to life was by ensuring, through strategically-placed windows, that visual connections to the external landscape were available at all levels, from the largest communal spaces down to individual bedrooms.
This feeling of openness is key to creating a calming, positive environment, particularly important when someone enters custody for the first time.
“The design, which will play an important role in Scotland for many years to come, will offer women a connection to the wider surrounding landscape - the Ochil hills, Forth Valley, Stirling Castle and Trossachs beyond - without compromising on security and safety.”
Teresa Medhurst, Chief Executive of the Scottish Prison Service, said: “This is a significant development and an important day for the Scottish Prison Service, the Scottish Government, and all our partners, and I would like to thank everyone who has worked so hard to get us to this position.
“HMP & YOI Stirling is an exemplary custodial setting for women, but what is at the heart of our Strategy for Women in Custody is the relationships forged between our staff, partners, communities and individuals in our care. HMP & YOI Stirling is another important milestone towards achieving the Scottish Government’s Vision for Justice.”

ASSET FINANCE – ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW!
There are many forms of finance available to businesses today, but one of the most effective for companies wanting to invest in their growth without impacting cashflow, is Asset Finance.
Very simply, it’s a type of financing that enables businesses to acquire a range of assets, from excavators and dumpers to forklifts and tractors.
There are several types of asset finance, including:
1. Hire Purchase: Hire Purchase is a type of asset finance where the
borrower agrees to pay for the asset in instalments over a specified period. During the hire purchase agreement, the borrower is responsible for the maintenance and repair of the asset. At the end of the term, the borrower has the option of purchasing the asset outright.
2. Refinancing (Capital Release): Refinancing is a quick way to access the cash from assets on an existing balance sheet and use that value elsewhere within a business – for example, to fund a deposit on new equipment or ease cash flow.
3. Sale and HP Back: Sales and HP Back is a form of refinance that can be used against most types of equipment, making it suitable for companies of all sizes, including sole traders. It works by the lender purchasing the asset and financing it back to the borrower. Repayments are calculated in line with the income stream that will be generated by the asset and at the end of the refinance term, the borrower owns the asset.
4. Finance Lease: Finance Lease lets the borrower use the equipment without having to buy it outright. Rent is paid for the full use of the asset and the rental period is flexible and can be tailored. During this period, the borrower pays the full cost of the asset, including interest and when the end of the primary lease term is reached, the borrower can choose to continue to use the asset by entering a secondary rental period; sell the asset and keep a portion of the income from the sale, or return it to the lender.
5. Operating Lease: Operating lease is a type of asset finance where the borrower rents the asset for a short period. At the end of the lease term, the borrower can choose to either return the asset or continue leasing it. For

FABRIC-FIRST BUILDING: A SOLUTION TO IMPROVED PROPERTY ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND REDUCED FUEL POVERTY
BY PAUL SIMPSON, COMMERCIAL DIRECTOR AT RECTICEL INSULATION
The cost-of-living crisis has forced households in the UK and Europe to adopt new domestic habits that prior to 2022 would have seemed extremely improbable. With spiraling gas and electricity bills playing a significant part in the ongoing financial woes, where once home heating systems blazed away for many hours of the day, boilers and other mechanical appliances are becoming a last line of defense against the cold for cash-strapped residents.
Families up and down the country are turning to hot water bottles, draught excluders, electric blankets - and in extreme cases wearing outdoors clothes indoors, before daring to turn on the heating. Whilst a grin and bear it attitude to the enduring thermostatphobia may stand us in good stead as we pray for spring’s early arrival, it’s no smiling matter for those less fortunate. Indeed, it’s feared that strict abstinence from domestic energy usage during the year’s coldest months will cost lives –particularly among the elderly. As was tragically the case in January, when the death of an 87-year-old woman from Bury made the news headlines. The pensioner died of hypothermia as a result of not being able to afford her heating bill. Sadly, it’s likely there will be reports of deaths in similar circumstances before winter’s end.
Office for National Statistics records show UK gas prices rose by a record 128.9% in the 12 months leading to December 2022. As a consequence, fuel poverty has also risen. UK charity, National Energy Action, estimates that 6.7million households are unable to afford heating, compared to the 4.5million thought to be fuel-poor in October 2021. It’s led to many impoverished UK communities facing the most distressing of binary dilemmas: do we heat or eat?
Global events, such as the Russia/ Ukraine war, are reportedly the main trigger for the current energy crisis. However, in terms of the sky-high bills it’s resulted in, UK residents are also paying a price for the country’s energy deficient housing stock. A report by independent climate change think tank, E3G, found that two-thirds of rented
properties were below the minimum ‘C’ rating for energy efficiency. According to the report, bringing these dwellings up to the minimum standard would save bill payers about £570 a year. In an interview with the Guardian website, Colm Britchfield, policy adviser at E3G, called the poor state of rented homes a ‘national scandal’. I cannot contradict his summation of this desperate situation.
It may have a taken a while, but the construction industry would appear to be on the threshold of fully-embracing the benefits of fabric-first design and build, thanks to the latest Part L amendments. It bodes well for the quality of our future built environment, as well as the population’s health and prosperity.
Part L embraces fabric-first approach
The amendments to Part L of the Building Regulations, which came into force in June 2022, are a move in the right direction to achieving better-built, energy-proficient properties. The new legislation puts a focus on improving the fabric energy efficiency of newhomes, with the overall aim to reduce their carbon output by 31%. Crucially, the updated regulations include a tightening
of standards for already-built homes in relation to extensions, replacements and repairs.
As a supplier of insulation products which are proven to create energysmart, healthy comfortable homes, Recticel Insulation has been a long-term advocate for a fabric-first approach to house building. About 35% of a home’s heat loss is through its walls, whilst roofs account for an estimated 25% of domestic energy escape. It stands to reason, therefore, that prioritising the design and composition of these key building elements is the most effective and sustainable route to delivering thermally-assured properties.
It may have a taken a while, but the construction industry would appear to be on the threshold of fully-embracing the benefits of fabric-first design and build, thanks to the latest Part L amendments. It bodes well for the quality of our future built environment, as well as the population’s health and prosperity. Because whatever the country’s costof-living situation in years to come, a significant increase in the availability of well-designed, well-insulated homes should significantly reduce the number of households currently struggling for an answer to the ‘heat or eat?’ question.

ARE ENERGY EFFICIENT MEASURES LEADING THE UK TO LOAD SHEDDING?
South Africa’s energy provider, Eskom has recently issued statements announcing an urgent increase in the levels of load shedding, greatly curbing the country’s electricity usage. While the concept of electricity blackouts is unheard of in the UK, could we be on a similar trajectory to South Africa? Whitecode’s Managing Director Alex Hill discusses whether the UK’s energy infrastructure is equipped to handle the government’s widespread introduction of new low-carbon technologies.
Eskom enabled load shedding severe as Stage Six over the past week, resulting in South Africans being unable to use electricity for multiple hours during the day. Stage 6 is an extreme power-saving measure, allowing up to 6,000MW to be removed from the power grid, leading to power supply cuts in the impacted area 18 times over a four-day period for four hours at a time. Ministers have warned the public to expect unprecedented Stage Seven and Eight load shedding due to a severe strain on the country’s electricity supply.
I experienced load shedding firsthand during my visit to Whitecode’s South Africa office. During my visit, the government planned a two-hour blackout twice a day, with blackouts occurring at different times each day. During this time, mobile phone masts became ineffective; the internet ground to a halt, and traffic lights became merely ornamental.
This deliberate shutdown of electric power is designed to prevent the failure of the whole power distribution system due to insufficient generation capacity. This can be attributed to multiple generation failures of ageing coal plants that cannot meet the electricity demand of the country’s population. To address this problem, the government has been working to shift its energy mix from coal to renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power, but unfortunately, rolling blackouts are commonplace in South Africa.
Pressures on the UK’s energy infrastructure
Although the UK is unaccustomed to such severe power saving precautions, could we be going the same way as South Africa? In 2021, the UK government announced that from
2030 new petrol and diesel cars will no longer be sold in the UK to help reduce carbon emissions. While this move towards reducing tailpipe emissions is commendable, can the UK’s infrastructure sustain nationwide electric car charging demand? Only two months ago, electricity companies were paying people to switch off as a solution to an electricity capacity crisis in the middle of winter. What will next year look like for the UK as the number of electric vehicles on the road increases?
Likewise, under the Future Homes Standard, new homes will only be able to install energy efficient heating systems to produce 31% lower emissions compared to the current levels. After 2025 gas boilers cannot be installed in new build residential properties, with the government aiming for a target of 600,000 heat pump installations per year by 2028. While this looks to solve the carbon emissions issue associated with heating, it could cause a significant issue for the UK’s electricity supply.
Potential solutions
South Africa is forced to switch off its electricity despite the detriment to the economy with businesses being rendered unable to trade. Longer term, South Africa requires a greater capacity to generate dispatchable power. While alternative energy sources such as solar and wind power are advantageous, South Africa’s power demand greatly exceeds its supply and requires energy that isn’t dependent on capricious environmental conditions. More dispatchable power
could potentially be delivered via gas plants, batteries or pumped storage hydropower.
Many people have implemented diesel generators as a solution, while others with adequate space have adopted batteries and solar photovoltaic (PV) systems which are the more sustainable options.
Given the harmful side effects of diesel generators, many advocate for batteries being mandatory in each home with a PV array to charge the batteries. Personally, I am an advocate for batteries and a solar PV in each home as a reliable and sustainable solution. Although, others back the use of cars as batteries, with dual-use ‘car house’ systems being trialled. Whatever the solution, heightened innovation in this area could be a precursor of forced load shedding in the UK.
While load shedding in the UK is not a foregone conclusion, sufficient supply for hundreds of thousands of electric vehicles and heat pumps seems ambitious to say the least. We would do well to heed South Africa’s load shedding situation as a cautionary tale and implement additional streams of power generation before we find ourselves in a situation where forced electricity shutdowns become the norm.

ROKBAK RA30 DELIVERS ON ALL FRONTS FOR SKENE GROUP
Down the road from Rokbak’s Motherwell HQ, a renowned family-owned Scottish construction materials business has shopped local and adopted a RA30 into the fold.
While Rokbak continues to build a global reputation for robust and reliable articulated haulers, just 50 miles directly east of the company’s headquarters in Motherwell, Scotland, Skene Group Construction Services Ltd has put a RA30 to work.
Skene Group is a proud family business with a core group of long-term employees which was started in 1968 by the nowretired Donald Skene, with his son Neil later taking over as Chairman and daughter Jill as a Director.
Today, it operates a 100-person workforce, with employees valued for the individual expertise they possess. For Skene, it’s always about bringing in the best people, and best equipment, to each aspect of its operations.
“Our partnerships are dictated first and foremost by attitudes and relationships –it’s all about the people that we deal with,” says Skene Group Managing Director Darren Forrester, who has been with the company for a quarter of a century. “And, as a self-proclaimed people business, Skene operates fundamentally through good service and quality. It’s a difficult industry to keep everybody happy in, but it matters to us to get things right.
“Our customers know that we deliver. And, manufacturing in the outdoors, whether it’s rain, hail, sleet or snow, our product quality must remain consistently high.”
Well-known around the local area for having its own weather-system, Soutra Mains Quarry in Pathhead, Midlothian, has provided the conditions to demonstrate the best of the Rokbak RA30. Skene Group operates this site, extracting material for a concrete plant through on-site wash plants and crushing trains – primarily as fill materials and the coarse recycled aggregate of crushed concrete stone. As one of the leading independent quarry
operators, Skene currently supplies precast concrete blocks to around 50% of Scotland’s housing market.
Loaded with pride
“The RA30 has been a very good, strong asset to Soutra Mains,” says Quarry Operations Director Kevin Hill “It’s rugged and robust, it can stand up to the conditions it’s subjected to, and it suits the type of rock we’ve got here.”
The RA30 arrived on site in late September 2022 to replace an old hauler, with Skene Group having worked once again in collaboration with long-time dealer Molson Group
“When we needed to find an articulated hauler manufacturer, we were already attracted by Rokbak’s proximity to us,” explains Darren. “Initially we were speaking to our contact at Molson, but we soon discovered that we would also have close contact with Rokbak throughout the process, which helped us to fine-tune the product to our specific needs.”
“It was great to have that touch-and-feel of the Motherwell factory, to be able to jump in the car and see the hauler in its manufacturing stage and meet the guys that were building it. We have been able to see the passion from the assemblers and machinists to product management – you can tell the Rokbak products mean something to them.
As one of the leading independent quarry operators, Skene currently supplies precast concrete blocks to around 50% of Scotland’s housing market.

Tools, Plant & Equipment Hire
“But what most impressed me about Rokbak as a manufacturer is that they allowed us to try both the RA30 and RA40 to see what would suit us personally on-site. Rokbak actually invested in Skene Group before we had even placed an order.”
The RA30 at work
At Soutra Mains, the RA30 is utilised predominantly in the lower benches of the quarry for load and haul, from the bottom level up to the concrete aggregate wash plant. The loading shovel fills the hauler in three passes before the RA30 sets off on an 800-metre round trip across different site levels to the plant and back.
“They’re generally dirty conditions for a dumper,” explains Skene Group Services and Quarry Manager Alex Brodie. “The Rokbak is running on compacted Type 1 sub-base with a few ruts here and there, but it’s nothing the machine can’t cope with. We’ve had no issues – the RA30 goes everywhere and does everything we’ve asked it to do.”
Tailored to your needs
Skene Group’s RA30 customisation involves the popular tailgate and a green beacon which is activated when the cab seatbelts are engaged to ensure operator safety. Side extensions on the truck maximise payload and help prevent spillage while travelling on the haul roads. An auto-lube system ensures everything is greased at the right times, saving operation time and providing safe maintenance. Heated mirror arrangements offer greater visibility down the side of the machine, and an additional mirror on the bonnet as per Skene Group’s request grants even greater safety while manoeuvring.
“This customisation is specific to the demands of Skene Group and the Soutra Mains Quarry,” says Kenny Price, Rokbak’s Regional Sales Manager for EMEA. “Winter conditions are always a challenge, particularly when the quarry endures a lot of rainfall, but the RA30’s capabilities make it more than adept at operating in adverse conditions. The high-performance engine balances controlled power with maximum fuel efficiency and the modulating transmission retarder is coupled with an efficient exhaust brake and fully enclosed oil-cooled multidisc brakes for total control – even on steep slopes.”
Operators praise the RA30
“I’ve been using the Rokbak since it arrived and it’s really nice to operate,” says Quarry Operative Robert Robertson. “When I first arrive on site in the morning, I check over the machine and do the initial checks with the oil, water and hydraulic levels. The layout makes everything quick and clear to see. The rearview camera makes my life a lot easier when you’re reversing the hauler, and the large
windows offer a lot of visibility. With any operation, comfort is very important, and it is a very comfortable truck to drive. Personally, I like the amount of room the cabin offers, as well as the stereo of course!”
The RA30’s spacious ROPS/FOPS certified cabs have been designed to avoid fatigue –with low noise, air-conditioning, cushioned steering and tough suspension. Easy operation and service data extraction is gained through clear instrumentation and an LCD display for operational and service feedback, including fuel consumption, while smart data identifies any faults and damage before they cause downtime.
“One of the most important things is that the machine is consistently available and ready to be utilised,” says Kevin. “That goes a long way, in terms of having the right equipment and minimising the amount of downtime.
“My biggest things are that the guys are happy and that they’re comfortable using it, and that there’s a minimal amount of downtime and low fuel consumption. Obviously, we’re looking to make savings.
Bringing the Rokbak in with its low fuel consumption is helping us to reduce the fuel usage in terms of average litres per hour and our overall operational costs.”
Rokbak delivers on customer needs
Skene Group’s hard rock operations are based throughout Central Scotland and the Borders region, with two quarries –the other being Lomond quarry in Fife – a block plant in Crossgates and the head office in Viewfield, offering ready-mix material and concrete blocks throughout these regions.
“When Skene Group was considering replacing an existing hauler, we were able to demonstrate how the RA30 met all of their requirements including safety, efficiency, productivity and operator acceptance,” says Mark Proudfoot, Managing Director, Molson Group. “Feedback for the RA30 has been extremely positive in terms of performance, efficiency and reliability –customers including Skene Group like that it’s modern but down-to-earth.
“In Soutra Mains Quarry we now have a piece of heavy engineering made in Scotland, performing in Scotland and supported in Scotland. We very much see the relationship with Rokbak and Skene Group as a partnership. Working closely with our OEM partners allows us to ensure we meet the needs of the customer as smoothly as possible, and having the customer included in this relationship closes the cycle – common interest, common goals, with all sides pulling in the same direction of having equipment working efficiently on site as part of a profitable operation.
“We love the Rokbak brand, what it stands for and how it aligns with the Molson Group approach: a sustainable forward-thinking company providing the very best equipment as the smart choice for customers, and, importantly, the support required when called upon.”

COMPACT LOADERS UK
Compact Loaders UK is the trading name of Ranger Equipment Ltd, with a history in the supply of niche Compact Machinery that create solutions to mechanise where larger machinery just can’t work. The aim is to enable safe working, with enhanced productivity and increased profitability to those who previously had to make do with old methods and sheer hard work.
The company’s mission is a simple but effective one, and it’s products, supply and support ethos certainly mirror it: ‘It is our mission to help you transform your work by adding Productivity and reducing Labour & Costs, whilst enhancing Safety and adding genuine value to your Profit Margins.’
MultiOne
Celebrating their 25th anniversary this year, MultiOne Srl are dedicated to the design and manufacture of MultiFunction Mini Loaders.
With a range of features reflected in very few other brands, MultiOne offer the broadest range of Loaders, from the diminutive 1 Series, to the Class Leading 11.9K. A total of 19 models are available, including the EZ range with Zero Emissions 100% Electric drivetrain.

A range of Labour Saving Mini Loaders and Dumpers to enhance Productivity and Safety on any job site.
DBS (Dynamic Block System) and Torque Divider are switchable, allowing for high traction when needed, but also can be set for minimal to no ground damage for delicate ground. With this a MultiOne can be engaged with challenging Forestry or Agricultural Terrain in the morning, and switch to Lawn Mowing in the afternoon.
Low gross weight is another key feature, with many MultiOne owners choosing to transport their Loader by 3.5T plant trailer. This is even achievable with the flagship 11 Series models, with a gross weight of only 2320kgs and a max tipping load of 3180kgs, it offers the highest lifting capacity of any Telescopic Loader that can legally be transported this way.
Sherpa
I refer to the SHERPA Mini Loader as our ‘greatest labour saver’ and it’s often overlooked due to it’s diminutive size. However, these little machines can work almost anywhere, they fit through single doors and gateways, the electric models work indoors and with a range of innovative attachments they reduce manual labour by a massive margin in spaces where machinery can’t normally be used.
- Steve Hadfield, MD at Compact Loaders
Tools, Plant & Equipment Hire
SHERPA Mini loaders B.V. was founded in The Netherlands in the late 1980s and like MultiOne, is another brand with a long history of innovation and development. Initially the Importer for BENELUX of the Opico Skidster, this transitioned into the SHERPA Mini loader in the mid 1990s and ‘evolution, not revolution’ has continued ever since.
The SHERPA is of ‘stand on design’, with compact dimensions. From just 76cm wide, only 150cm in length and around 135cm tall, many customers transport these diminutive Loaders in the back of their van!
SHERPA were the first to launch an Electric Skidsteer model as early as 2014 and this has become a favourite amongst internal Construction, Demolition and Soft-Strip professionals across the world. In countries like the USA where construction site labour cost is exceptionally high, it’s a real winner. The extended battery run time of 6 hours (continuous use in loading application) from one charge can be further enhanced with a battery ‘change-over’ system to allow multi-shift use of one machine.
The new Z Series is currently in launch, with some models already out with customers. This is a new range of ‘premium’ performance SHERPA Mini Loaders, with enhanced ergonomics, increased lifting capacity, higher torque transmission and much more. In 2020 the Z Series designer’s were rewarded with a European Product Design Award in the transportation category, based on a prototype - https://www. productdesignaward.eu/
Twinca
TWINCA was the latest addition to the range, added in 2022 and is the ideal companion to the SHERPA Mini Loader, especially in Electric guise. These are innovative machines, built to a very high quality level in Denmark from Manufacturer TWINCA A/S.
“For our SHERPA customers looking for the ultimate in labour saving, adding a TWINCA Dumper makes great sense especially for internal applications. For example, an Internal Demolition or Soft-Strip team can be clearing the job site with SHERPA Electric Mini Loaders and use them to load the TWINCA. The Dumper can then transport loads of upto 800kgs swiftly from indoors to outside where their high tipping capability can discharge into skips. Even high capacity Ro-Ro skips can be reached.” Says Steve.
Just like the SHERPA, the TWINCA has an extended battery run time of upto 6 hours, which is ample for the typical 8hr shift patterns on UK sites nowadays. After shift, re-charging is achieved via an on board dual voltage charger, this is ‘self seeking’ from 110v to 240v.

SPIDER OPERATOR ‘JUMPS AT CHANCE’ TO GO LARGE WITH HINOWA
Work at height specialist Fletcher Access has placed an order for the new Hinowa Lightlift 40.18 - the biggest spider lift ever produced by Hinowaas it renews its platform fleet.
The Worcester-based company has also taken delivery of a new Hinowa Lightlift 20.10 spider lift, putting it to good use on a maintenance project at a 19th Century Grade II listed Greek Revival country house.
Fletcher Access has been one of the first UK platform operators to order the Hinowa Lightlift 40.18 Performance IIIS from Access Platform Sales, the UK and Ireland authorised Hinowa distributor.
The company has selected a bi-energy lithium battery and diesel version of the platform, which is ideal for indoor and outdoor working and gives clients the sustainability advantage of zeroemissions and low-noise operation.
Company co-owner Simon Fletcher said: “We have been reviewing investment options for a while now. The performance, quality and operating system of Hinowa platforms are all first-rate.
“As soon as the Lightlift 40.18 came onto the market we jumped at the chance to have one. To now be able to have a lithium bi-energy Hinowa with 17 meters of outreach at 23 meters of height was not an option we wanted to pass up.”
The Hinowa Lightlift 40.18’s platform capacity of 300kg was another clincher,
as it will allow the company’s work teams and platform hire clients to carry extra tools and equipment at height.
Fletcher Access provides spider platform working at height maintenance and hire services across all business sectors, including building maintenance and inspection, construction, telecommunications, power transmission, and tree management.
Shane Paver, Northern Sales Director at APS, the UK and Ireland’s authorised distributor for Hinowa, said: “The confidence Simon and Anthony have in the Hinowa Lightlift 40.18 reflects the buzz it has created among APS customers.
It has the same operating system as all other spider lifts in the Performance range, so is just as easy and safe to operate, with features such as one-button set up and stow, and Hinowa’s trademark exceptionally precise proportional controls.
“As the need to work on tall structures, whether they be inner city apartment blocks, wind turbines or telecoms masts, grows across the UK, we are confident there will also be a growing market for the Hinowa Lightlift 40.18.”
The tracked boom lift has a maximum working height of 40.2m and a maximum outreach of 17.5m. It has an unrestricted basket capacity of 230kg, like all other Hinowa spiders, and a restricted capacity of 300kg to an outreach of 16.5m.
APS believes the bi-energy lithium battery and diesel version is likely to be the most popular, with the platform also available with bi-energy diesel and 110v mains electric power and with all electric lithium batteries.
The spider cherry picker’s 17.5m maximum outreach is achieved when the platform is at a 10m working height. It has a 17m at a working height of 23m, and can also reach 4m below ground level to assist, for example, for underbridge work.
The Hinowa Lightlift 40.18’s platform capacity of 300kg was another clincher, as it will allow the company’s work teams and platform hire clients to carry extra tools and equipment at height.

The spider lift can be elevated on its outriggers to a height under its tracks of 1.12m to assist in levelling on steep inclines, or to self-load onto trailers.
Meanwhile, Simon Fletcher was putting the company’s new Hinowa Lightlift 20.10 through its paces with a roof maintenance project at Whitbourne Hall, near Broadwas, Worcestershire.
The country house, now flats and a wedding venue, had been the 19th Century home of Edward Evans, founder of what became the world’s largest vinegar factory in the centre of Worcester. The company supplied Worcester’s other famous condiment manufacturer, Lea and Perrins.
The Hinowa LL 20.10 was ideal for reaching up and over the roof to remove wooden boards, once used to help secure the lead roof, which had become loose, also vegetation growing above the hall’s impressive columned entrance.
The diesel and 110v mains electric platform has a maximum working height of 20.1m, a maximum outreach of 9.7m, and can be towed on a 3.5t trailer by a
4x4 vehicle or van using a standard car licence.
Simon Fletcher said: “To be maintained properly, heritage buildings like this need constant attention. Hinowa spider lifts are ideal, because they can be used to carry out smaller tasks like this quickly and safely.
“The work can be done without the need for scaffolding or other access measures, which can be very expensive and unsightly, and may not even be permitted on some protected structures.”

ABHR ERECTS FIRST-EVER RAIMONDI T187 FLAT-TOP TOWER CRANE IN EUROPE
ABHR, a Belgian construction company with more than half a century of experience in the industry, installed the first-ever Raimondi T187 flat-top tower crane in a northern eastern municipality of Antwerp, Belgium.
Part of the newly launched Class 110 series, the crane was installed with the support of a Raimondi field technician and four commissioning specialists from Uperio Group. Purchased at Bauma 2022 in Munich, Germany, the crane is participating in the build of 19 residential units and will remain onsite for approximately 18 more months.
The technical installation process included the first stage of the jib and counterjib preparation at ground level, as well as the tower and cabin erection followed by the usage of a 200-tonne mobile crane.
“We are thrilled to be the first European construction company to have a machine from the new Raimondi series. The excellent specifications of the crane in terms of lifting capabilities and speed, as well as the weight-optimized components, which facilitate the installation procedures, were the features we most considered in choosing this model,” said Max Van Gompel, Director General, ABHR.
The Raimondi T187, as with the entire Class 110 crane series, boasts significant improvements on both the technical and operational level thanks to its new control system – ConCore.
ConCore’s many benefits include improved error diagnostics, alongside
the plusses of mechanical and carpentry part modularity, and interchangeability of jib element parts. Having the bestin-class specifications, the T187 can lift at a maximum speed of 115 meters in the 37kW winch version, and the drum capacity of 620m.
Available with a maximum lifting capacity of 8tn or 10tn, II/IV falls or permanent II falls, the Raimondi T187 satisfies a variety of client needs and jobsite requirements. The first flat-top of Class 110 operating onsite celebrates the extensive implementation of Raimondi’s new development and design approach to its tower crane manufacturing system.
The machine, at work with the crane maximum radius of 67.5m, a height under the hook (HUH) of 35m and a tip load of 1.61t, is fitted with the Raimondi
The Raimondi Lumina is equipped with an impressive 10’’ monitor that boots legibility, data management and storage, and most importantly facilitates remote assistance as it allows instant and effective intervention.
“In terms of a broader market analysis, the Raimondi T187 is well-suited to the current requirements for medium-size developments in Belgium. It offers good lifting capacities and speed, while allowing for higher freestanding heights thanks to reinforced towers,” Van Gompel concluded.
Lumina crane cab. The new cabin is one of the largest in the marketplace at a height of 2.14 meters and a length of 2.28 meters, and is lauded for its comfort as it includes user experience features such as a refrigerator and a Bluetooth audio system, amongst others.

NEWLY UPDATED MEWPS SAFETY GUIDANCE AVAILABLE TO HELP REDUCE ENTRAPMENT INCIDENTS
A newly updated safety publication is now freely available which provides guidance as to how to reduce the risks of trapping and crushing hazards when using MEWPs. Published by the Construction Industry Plant Safety Group (CIPSG), the 22-page publication is entitled ‘Good Practice Guidance for Reducing Trapping/Crushing Injuries to People in MEWPs’.
The guidance document has been compiled by the CIPSG for MEWPs which is chaired by the Construction Plant-hire Association (CPA) and administered and supported by the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF).
MEWPs are widely acknowledged to be one of the safest and most efficient means of enabling temporary working at height. Between 2016 and 2020, incidents entered into the IPAF Reporting Portal from 15 countries identified that 73 people died in entrapment incidents globally. Entrapment injuries to persons in the MEWP platform are usually serious and often fatal. The Good Practice Guidance has been produced by the CIPSG for
MEWPs to raise awareness of this risk among MEWP operators, supervisors and rescuers.
The guidance sets out to inform people about the measures that can be used to reduce the risk and number of entrapment incidents by providing guidance on planning, risk assessment, MEWP selection, operator training, familiarisation and rescue. Emphasis is placed on the practical measures that MEWP users can take to avoid entrapment.
The first version of the guidance was originally published in 2010, and it has undergone significant revision in this latest version. The document has been restructured to improve readability and understanding of the topic and new illustrations have been added. The content reflects and builds upon findings from the recently published Health & Safety Executive Research Report (HSE RR1180:2022) which examined the effectiveness of secondary guarding when employed in a range of different entrapment scenarios.
Kevin Minton, Chair of the Construction Industry Plant Safety Group for MEWPs, said: “The guidance will be a vital reference tool for MEWP hire companies, customers, operators and manufacturers. Presented in easily digestible sections, it is aimed at those using and supervising MEWPs, and those responsible for rescuing entrapped people, as well as anyone involved in planning and risk assessing work with MEWPs, specifying equipment, managing the work or organising training.
We anticipate it will prove to be a useful training tool as it has been designed to be used in briefings or toolbox talks for supervisors and MEWP operators.”
Brian Parker, IPAF’s Head of Safety & Technical, commented: “This updated guidance has taken a while to develop, but it was much-needed, as data gathered via IPAF’s Reporting Portal (www. ipafaccidentreporting.org) shows that entrapment is consistently one of the top five causes of serious injuries and deaths when using MEWPs. Much work and cross-industry consultation has gone into this document to ensure it is thorough, comprehensive, clear and concise. The powered access industry has advanced significantly over the past five to ten years, with technological advancements driving secondary guarding devices, and machine capabilities and complexities. Meanwhile, the breadth of industry end applications has developed considerably over that period.
“We feel this new guidance document adequately encompasses all of these changes and provides an important point of reference to aid in minimising entrapment risks for all those planning, executing and supervising work at height using MEWPs. We are very pleased to see it published for users to read and download completely free of charge.”
The Construction Industry Plant Safety Group for MEWPs has membership from the CPA, IPAF, HSE and FASET (Fall Arrest Safety Equipment and Training), as well as significant representation from MEWP owners, manufacturers and major construction companies. It meets regularly to share information on MEWPs safety, and has set up working groups to produce guidance and address specific issues.
The ‘Good Practice Guidance for Reducing Trapping/Crushing Injuries to People in MEWPs’ publication is available for anyone to freely download from the CPA website at www.cpa.uk.net/ safety-and-technical-publications/ plant-safety-group or from IPAF’s website at www.ipaf.org/resources

BOSS CABINS SECURES LARGE ORDERS FOR ITS NEW GENERATORFREE WELFARE RANGE
UK welfare manufacturer Boss Cabins has announced that after an intensive period of testing and seeding the market, they have secured a number of significant orders for its recently launched Deep Green GenFree welfare cabin range.
Over the past six months, Boss Cabins has focussed on placing its generator-free cabins on demo with large hire companies and Tier 1 construction companies in an effort to prove to the market that the cabins are more than capable of achieving full functionality year-round without the need for an onboard back-up generator.
Boss Cabins Managing Director James Kearsey said: “A number of successful demos have now been completed with contractors such as Balfour Beatty, Barhale, Bowmer & Kirkland, Danaher and Walsh, Costain, Erith Group, McAleer & Rushe and Morgan
Sindall amongst many others, with every one producing phenomenal results.
“Welfare hire companies that placed smaller ‘seed’ orders of the GenFree cabins earlier in the year are now seeing heavy utilisation and demand for this new concept. We are delighted to announce that confidence in the Boss Cabins generator-free welfare concept has now reached such a point that large orders have been placed and we have last month secured orders over the next six months for 634 GenFree cabins.”
The orders are for GenFree towable welfare units in a range of sizes from 12ft up to 24ft and also some 25ft and 28ft static units. These will be starting to roll off the production line this month and Boss Cabins will be working to increase our monthly output going forward.
James Kearsey added: “We are delighted that all our work demoing and trialling these units is paying off and welfare end users are seeing the real benefits of generatorfree welfare cabins in terms of 100% silent operation, zero generator-related fuel use and zero CO2 emissions for most of the year. From a fleet owners’ point of view, these GenFree cabins also remove a huge cost and headache to the business, eliminating all generator servicing expenditure and all risk of generator breakdowns.”
“We truly believe that this generator-free solar-powered concept is the future of site welfare and we delighted that this is now being recognised in the marketplace with these large orders. “
The Boss Cabins’ Deep Green GenFree range is available in both mobile and static format with cabins from 12ft up to 32ft in size.

A WHEEL OF FORTUNE: CONSTRUCTION MACHINERY ON WHEELS
Excavator, loader or dump truck – here’s what to consider when using tyred construction machinery. Wheels enable higher speed and manoeuvrability at a lower price and easy maintenance. However, they reach their limits on difficult terrain.
Example 1: the wheeled excavator
Probably the most well-known construction machine that is widely used on both wheels and tracks is the excavator. A wheeled excavator is also called a mobile excavator. And as the alternative name already suggests: wheels provide for a higher driving speed and greater manoeuvrability for construction machines. This makes them ideal for work in confined areas, such as on a construction site in the city.
Since rubber wheels are much lighter than steel tracks, tyred construction machines often have a significantly lower dead weight. This and the higher driving speed allow wheeled excavators often to even have road approval.
So, they can drive themselves to the job site, avoiding heavy transport. Compared to a tracked excavator, the wheeled version is also easier to control. In addition, wheels are usually cheaper and easier to maintain or repair than tracks.
However, there are also disadvantages. Wheels provide less traction than tracks on muddy, sandy or very soft surfaces as the wheels’ contact area is smaller and the ground pressure is therefore much higher. So, crawler excavators are used on demanding construction projects.
Example 2: the wheel loader
The wheel loader is a widely used construction vehicle for lifting and transporting materials such as earth, gravel, rubble or other bulk materials. Unlike the wheeled excavator, wheel loaders are equipped with a wide bucket instead of a boom or long arm. Therefore, they transport heavier loads than an excavator. It is important to ensure that the so-called tipping load is not exceeded.
This is the critical weight at which a construction machine loses its stability and tips over above its centre of gravity. Especially on uneven terrain, wheeled construction machines are more prone to tipping over than tracked vehicles.
Nevertheless, loaders are usually equipped with wheels since their main area of application is on paved or asphalted roads.
Example 3: the dump truck
Tippers and dumpers are used to transport large amounts of earth or bulk materials. Dump trucks have a tare weight of at least 20 t and are therefore an exception in public transport. They are mainly used in mining, quarrying and open-cast mining, and on large construction sites. Dump trucks therefore usually drive on solid and well-drivable ground, but they must be fast and mobile. Therefore, wheels are the chassis of choice.
The largest type of wheeled construction machines is the dump truck. The largest one currently in operation is the 75710 from the Belarusian company BelAZ. It has a tare weight of about 360 t. The maximum payload of 450 t is handled by the 4,600 hp of the two diesel engines. It drives on a total of eight wheels (single wheel diameter: 3.9 m, width: 1.78 m, weight: approx. 5.5 t).
That does not sound like dump trucks are mobile and manoeuvrable. To address this issue, Volvo developed the articulated dump truck in the 1960s. Today, worldwide, every second articulated dump is made by Volvo. An articulated swivel joint allows the tractor and trailer to move independently of each other.
Used machinery: Why the wheel does not have to be reinvented
Wheels provide mobility and are cheaper than caterpillars. For whom these are the decisive factors when designing their construction business, they should take a look at the used machinery market. By purchasing used machinery, companies can reduce their investment costs, especially when it comes to expensive construction industry machines.

Yanmar’s C08 is a mini dumper on tracks primarily designed for landscaping and gardening work – but also suitable for construction related activities.
The C08 series, with an operational loading capacity of 800 kg, exists in two versions: Power (560 kg) and Hi-Tip (670 kg, and can be further supplied with an optional self-loading system (Power+ and Hi -Tip+). Hi-Tip models have an unloading height of up to 1,350mm and can dump their load into most skips, over fences and garden walls and onto high working areas.
All these models combine high performance, reliability and compactness. The dimensions of the C08 allow it to work in very confined spaces where its width (810 mm in the standard version and 835 mm with the
self-loading system) is a real asset. Its undercarriage is strong and mounted on tracks, allowing the machines to climb steps or operate on soft ground or in snow. The specific shape of the suspension rollers facilitates the passage of the machines over rough terrain, while keeping the load in the body. The C08 is designed to transport all types of construction material and can evacuate waste of all sorts.
The C08 has a Yanmar diesel engine (LN 100 AE 10hp). It is equipped with a

CHARTWAY PARTNERSHIPS GROUP EXPANDS FOOTPRINT WITH NEW OFFICE IN CRAWLEY
Chartway Partnerships Group, a leading South East England land-led housebuilder, is expanding its footprint with the opening of a new office in Crawley, West Sussex. The move comes as part of the company’s strategic growth plans to develop new homes across Sussex, Surrey and Essex.
The new office is the first for Chartway outside Kent, enabling the business to kick start the creation of a regional structure within the Group. The Crawley office will be home to members of the Group team including the Partnerships team and the PSP strategic asset management team.
SUCCESSFUL SOUTHERN WATER PILOT SCHEME SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCES SEWAGE SPILLS FROM STORM OVERFLOWS
A new pilot scheme undertaken by Southern Water on the Isle of Wight has seen the installation of 200-litre water butts to a number of households and facilities in the village of Havenstreet. The water butts capture and slow the return of rainwater into the water systems, reducing pressure on storm overflows and helping to reduce spills by 70 per cent.
The project is part of a £5 million investment into a number of naturebased engineering solutions for sustainable drainage schemes (SuDS) to help deal with rainwater run-off from hard surfaces. The main area of focus is to slow the flow of rainwater entering the water network during heavy rainfall events.
The concept was initially trialled at one large nursing home where up to five tonnes of water was coming off the 800m² roof when it rained and overwhelming the CSO. Trant Engineering commissioned bespoke planters in keeping with the old Victorian building which are able to absorb a significant amount of rainwater.
“Slow drain” butts were offered to residents in the village of Havenstreet
and on one street, with 72 per cent of households using them, the nearby CSO (which previously activated 27 times a year when rainfall exceeded 5mm) saw only one spill during the six-month trial. Southern Water expects the butts to keep annual incidents down to single figures.
The installation of water butts allows rainwater to be captured, and a drain halfway up the receptacle slowly releases the water back into the network over a five-hour period which prevents nearby combined sewage overflows (CSOs) from being overwhelmed.
The Havenstreet trial was so successful that the Department for Education requested that planters (photo shows a Sudsplanter) and water butts be installed at twelve primary schools and five academies across the IOW.
“The timescale for SuDS for the schools has been so tight but Ian Deakin and a team from Trant have risen to every challenge and pulled it out of the bag. I’m so grateful for the team, who have gone above and beyond to support us in making things happen” says Laura Moran, Project Manager of Southern Water’s Clean Rivers and Seas Taskforce.
The Sussex base is an exciting move for Chartway to support the strategic objectives of growing new partnerships with housing associations and deliver its land-led housebuilding plans of hitting 1,500 new homes per year by 2030.
Chartway is well positioned to take advantage of improving market conditions, having achieved significant growth in recent years. From the new office, Chartway will be able to rapidly expand its operations and provide more homes for people across the South East.
Commenting on the expansion, Group CEO of Chartway Partnerships Group, Steven Cresswell, said: “We are delighted to announce the opening of our new office in Crawley, which is a key milestone in our strategic growth plans.
The Chartway vision is to deliver new homes for everyone, and our new office is a crucial part of that strategy.
The South East of England presents a significant opportunity for us to develop high-quality, lowenergy private sale, private rent and affordable homes for our housing association partners. The Crawley office will enable us to create new partnerships and expand our land acquisition programme to support our growth across Sussex, Surrey, and Essex.”
The new office is located in Midland House on Crawley High Street and officially opened May 2023.

Once in a while a product comes along and changes everything, from the way it’s crafted to the way it works. Products are often copied and many are great ideas that never really see true success in their application. Many years are spent searching for a product that will ultimately surpass expectations, stand the test of time and become recognised as the leader in its field.
We created one of those successful products nearly two decades ago and still today it has never been equalled.
Why?
Because we have never compromised on quality.
It takes a long time to create perfection.

ALDI ENHANCES TRADEMARK GREY WITH A NATURAL SLATE SOLUTION
CUPA PIZARRAS’ CUPACLAD® 101 Logic was specified as part of the construction of a new Aldi store in Truro, Cornwall. The natural slate cladding product was chosen for an aesthetic that was entirely in-keeping with the surrounding Cornish town, as well as its impressive fireresistant properties.
Aldi tasked construction consultancy company Kendall Kingscott with designing and overseeing the creation of a new store in Garras Wharf, Truro. Kendall Kingscott became aware of CUPA PIZARRAS and its products after the slate provider presented a CPD to the team in their Bristol office. Keen to utilise the company’s natural slate products, Kendall Kingscott contacted its Technical Sales Manager for the South West, Stuart Black.
“The team at Kendall Kingscott wanted to use natural slate for two reasons,” said Stuart. “Firstly, hanging slate cladding is very popular in the local area so specifying this material would allow the store to blend in with some of the surrounding buildings. Secondly, natural slate scores highly when it comes to fire resistance.”
Consequently, Stuart recommended CUPACLAD® Logic 101, which utilises CUPA PIZARRAS’ natural slate. At 7.65mm thick, it is a robust slate product and is ideal for locations that regularly experience high
winds and heavy rain. Furthermore, CUPA PIZARRAS natural slate is classed as A1 non-combustible in accordance with the European standard EN 13501-1 – the highest possible fire rating.
Once the 150m2 of CUPA PIZARRAS’ natural slate was delivered to site – it was installed by Spectrum Building Envelope & Facades. As is required for CUPACLAD® Logic 101, the slates were fixed horizontally using self-drilling screws
that have been specially designed to optimise installation. Post-application the screws are invisible, to ensure they do not detract from the natural slate’s appealing aesthetic.
Architect James Stanfield from Kendall Kingscott commented: “CUPA PIZARRAS worked closely with our design team to produce a bespoke solution that provides a sharp and contemporary public facing façade.
“The slate provides texture and uniformity to the building frontage, which ties it into the local context. We were very pleased with the finish provided by CUPACLAD® Logic 101 and how CUPA PIZARRAS helped to deliver the project and fulfil the brief.”
What’s more, thanks to its natural resistance and durability, CUPA PIZARRAS’ slate does not lose its colour over time and it continues to perform. As such, it is maintenance free and guaranteed to last up to 100 years.

WHY FLAT ROOFS SOMETIMES HAVE THE EDGE ON PITCHED ROOF DESIGN
By James Wilinson,
In residential or commercial environments, properties are generally covered with a pitched or flat roof design. Although both different in style, each is designed to carry out the same task: safeguard a building against the elements whilst contributing to the creation of a warm, thermally-efficient interior. But why do some property owners opt for a flat roof rather than a pitched roof design or pitched roof extension?
Bearing less weight than a pitched roof design or pitched roof extension, a flat roof is more suitable for the safe, convenient placement of plant such as air conditioning units and other plant materials that are crucial to highoccupancy buildings.
Design Team Manager at Gradient
Firstly, the title ‘flat roof’ is slightly misleading. No roof is completely flat, as each one must contain a slope, however slight, in order to allow effective rainwater run-off. If water is not properly dispersed from a flat roof its weight will lead to deflections forming and increase the risk of ponding. This additional weight may increase the likelihood of a worstcase scenario: water-based structural damage, one of the most common forms of building failure.
Advantages of a flat roof over a pitched roof design
Although suitable for a range of environments and applications, flat roofs have greater prominence on commercial or publicly-funded buildings including schools and hospitals. In these areas, the advantages of a flat roof over a pitched roof design are more pronounced for several reasons. Commercial roofing spaces tend to be much larger than residential settings and contain multiple levels, eliminating
a sloped or pitched roof design as an option. Bearing less weight than a pitched roof design or pitched roof extension, a flat roof is more suitable for the safe, convenient placement of plant such as air conditioning units and other plant materials that are crucial to high-occupancy buildings. The ease with which flat roofs are accessed and upkept in comparison to pitched roof designs or pitched roof extensions is enhanced by their ability to accommodate edge protection and ladder systems, thus reducing the safety risk during routine maintenance visits.
Pitched roof construction details
A roof’s pitch is measured by the vertical rise in relation to horizontal run. There are two types of pitches, steep and shallow. A steep slope is between 45 and 60 degrees while a shallow pitched roof design is between 20 and 45 degrees. The steepness or depth of a roof’s slope affects how much water will run off of it.
60 Roofing & Cladding Construction UK Magazine - July 2023
This is why it’s important for homeowners to know what their roof pitch is.
Pitched roof vs flat roof cost
Pitched roofs, due to their height and visibility, offer more of a striking statement in terms of aesthetics. However, flat roofs, on account of their rapid, cost-effective installation, easier maintenance and proven, long-term performance, find greater favour in commercial settings than a pitched roof design. That’s not to say that flat roofs can’t look as smart as they perform. Indeed, such are the advances in the technical composition of roof insulation and waterproofing membranes, flat roofs can provide a building with a crisp, uniform finish that obscures less eyecatching details, such as solar PV panels and plant details from being visible at ground level.
Flat roofs are typically more costeffective to install than a pitched roof design or pitched roof extension. This cost-efficiency is enhanced by flat roofs requiring less maintenance to uphold performance, although twice
Roofing & Cladding
a year inspection is still needed as per BS6229:2018. A pitched roof design or pitched roof extension might be considered more suitable for areas subject to heavy snowfall or rain due to their greater pitch allowing for a more rapid shedding of water.

However, flat roofs, on account of their rapid, cost-effective installation, easier maintenance and proven, long-term performance, find greater favour in commercial settings than a pitched roof design.
Tapered insulation a facilitator to successful flat roof installation
As an effective way of creating falls to provide effective water run-off, tapered insulation is an increasingly popular method of securing a flat roof’s long-
term performance by keeping it dry and warm. However, achieving such an outcome requires good planning and specification, all of which can be taken care of by engaging with Gradient –experts in flat roof insulation and tapered roof insulation.
We work closely with clients at all stages of a project to deliver a tapered insulation system that is tailormade to suit flat roof applications varying in size and complexity. From design to the off-site manufacturing process, through to a system’s installation and beyond, Gradient’s turnkey service offers complete peace of mind. It guarantees that the tapered insulation system we select will be the most efficient and costeffective for your flat roof’s long-term protection.
The benefits gained from our all-round flat roof insulation and tapered roof insulation service could be considered priceless, particularly as our technical expertise and support, coupled with our range of high-performance insulation systems, enable flat roof installations to be carried out correctly first time, every time.

Speaking of her double award nomination, Victoria said: “Although there’s still a stigma surrounding women working in construction, it certainly isn’t as big as it used to be, and I rarely come across it. I also think women can bring a more nurturing and supportive aspect to the team, something that’s very important for the mental health of the workforce.
“To even be nominated for these awards, is such a high accolade for me. I love what I do, and I hope to inspire other women and exservice personnel to join the sector.”
Barratt Homes is an equal opportunities’ employer and works hard to ensure there are roles for everyone regardless of gender, race, or background. With the housebuilder’s support, Victoria regularly champions the housebuilder’s Diversity and Inclusion Forum, which offers a safe space for people to approach the organisation and speak about any issues they are facing.
Anthony Dimmick, Barratt Homes’ Community Liaison Manager, said: “Our Diversity and Inclusion programme is an important step in addressing the needs of our workforces and helps us assess the way we work as a company.
Victoria is a great advocate for women working in construction, along with those transferring from the Armed Forces, and is a real asset to the team. I’m delighted to hear that she has been

LIME-BASED MORTARS, RENDERS AND PLASTERS – PRESERVING THE PAST
Lime has a long history of being used in the construction and repair of historic buildings. 6000 years to be precise when in 4000BC, the Egyptians used lime to plaster the Pyramids. Fast forward to 126 when the Romans used lime to build highly complicated structures such as The Pantheon. Not to be outdone, various ancient Chinese Dynasties built, re-built and extended the Great Wall of China over a period of 2000 years. And, in 1078 lime mortar was used to build The White Tower (of London); one of many English castles to be built using this versatile material. So, it’s safe to say that lime is one of the great survivors, weathering the effects of corrosion and natural disasters for thousands of years.
Why lime? Why not?
The architects and builders of yesteryear understood the many unique benefits that lime offers, although then they perhaps didn’t appreciate the importance that many of these properties would have in today’s built environment, where sustainability and environmental issues are key agenda.
1500 million tonnes of Portland cement is manufactured worldwide each year which releases an equivalent amount of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. It is widely reported that cement production contributes up to 10% of global CO2 emissions. Lime produces around 19kg of CO2 per tonne, compared with 175kg per tonne for cement-based mortar. So, with up to 50% less embodied energy, the use of lime mortars would make a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. During the carbonisation process, lime mortar will re-absorb 13kg of CO2 per tonne, compared to cement which only manages 50% of this at 6.5kg per tonne.
From initial production to completed project, limebased mortar will produce 5.5kg of CO2 per tonne, compared to cement producing a huge 165kg per tonne.
NB. If a traditional air lime mortar is used, in its manufacture, 100% of CO2 is absorbed.
From initial production to completed project, lime-based mortar will produce 5.5kg of CO2 per tonne, compared to cement producing a huge 165kg per tonne.
Lime is highly versatile and can be used in buildings in many different ways. Mix lime putty with sand to form a lime mortar which can be used for bedding masonry, pointing, rendering and plastering. Where fine joints are present – in ashlar masonry for example – or in gauged brickwork, pure lime putty can be used. Dilute with water and you have a lime wash for both internal and external walls; and if a coloured wash is required, pigment can be added. To make mortar repairs in damaged stonework, lime putty can be mixed with certain aggregates. Lime is also valuable in specialist stone cleaning and conservation techniques.
Lime – protecting the future – the preferred choice for eco-builders
Lime offers huge environmental benefits:
• It is a natural material
• It has low embodied energy
• It re-absorbs CO2 during carbonation
• There is no efflorescence due to high presence of sulphate-resistant binders
• Is 100% recyclable after use
• Lime is the perfect partner for lowenergy, sustainable materials such as water reeds, straw, coppiced timber, earth and clay.
And breathe…………..
Buildings need to breath, and one of the key attributes of lime is that it allows a building to breathe and move. Lime allows good vapour permeability by facilitating moisture movement through the building and assisting in the drying out process.
The open pore structure of lime promotes the free flow of moisture in and out of a building, thereby preventing damp, green mould and moisture build up in the cavities.
It also allows for movement within a building – again a completely natural requirement – without the need to use expansion joints. This natural movement prevents cracking, corrosion and ultimate breakdown that would occur with manufactured materials such as cement and concrete.
When appearance matters.
The use of lime mortar in both historic and contemporary buildings adds significantly to the aesthetic; it has a highly natural, organic appearance and these aesthetic qualities are hard to equal with manufactured building materials.
In historic building and conservation projects, a time-weathered appearance is key to preserving the look and feel of the period and lime is probably unrivalled in this respect. Today in contemporary building design unusual brick colours are increasingly specified; sometimes with architectural detail requiring a matching or complementary mortar. By using modern technology, it is now possible to provide precisely colour-matched mortars, which adds an extra aesthetic dimension.

HEAVY TRENCH COVERS ARE HISTORY
Once in a while, a product will come along whose performance will drive a change in standards across entire industries. Like stainless steel. Or concrete. Or a trench cover which is over 80% lighter than the cast iron traditionally used, eliminating the need for costly specialised lifting equipment and the accompanying health and safety hazards. And, unlike metal and concrete infill covers, it’s engineered from a GRP composite material which is impervious to corrosion from water and salt, as well as many other corrosive constituents.
Changing The Standard For Health & Safety
Fibrelite’s GRP composite trench and manhole covers are fast usurping metal and concrete covers to become the standard for high-performance industries like airports, commercial ports, leisure cruise terminals, military and defence, power generation (both traditional and renewables), and data centres, with companies like Magnox, The National Grid, all branches of the UK armed forces, and the world’s largest technology brands specifying Fibrelite covers for new build and retrofit projects.
Recent Installation: Port Cruise Terminal Upgrade, UK
As part of this Southern English port’s cruise terminal upgrade project, Fibrelite was approached by the end-user, who was providing the Onshore Power Supply (OPS) systems. The port had previously considered installing cast iron trench covers to cover the 500 metres of trench housing the high-voltage power cables, but due to their weight (approximately 350 kg) and the additional associated overheads, they approached Fibrelite for a lighter alternative.
Fibrelite developed a bespoke covering solution made up of dozens of customsized F900 (90-tonne) load-rated GRP composite trench covers in varying
dimensions to suit the specified trench rebate dimensions, which were 65 kg, 82% (285 kg) lighter than the cast iron alternative. The Fibrelite covers are light enough for safe removal with the site dolly, complying with the load rating requirement of the site.
Recent Installation: Major Southern UK Airport Off-Apron Lighting Pit Upgrade
At one of the UK’s busiest airports, Fibrelite designed and manufactured a retrofit replacement for manhole covers over off-apron runway lighting pits where onsite staff have a window of approximately two minutes to effect maintenance and/or repair works between take-offs and landings, including removing and replacing the F900 load rated access cover. The new lightweight GRP composite Fibrelite covers now allow safe,
fast access to the lighting pits, maximising time for maintenance and minimising the risk of injury.
I’ve been a part of the Fibrelite journey since 2011, and it’s been exciting to play a part in driving the upgrade from traditional concrete and metal trench and manhole covers to GRP composites in myriad industries, especially those where manual handling is critical, and seeing how we’ve helped increase health and safety and performance in those industries. We expect to see more and more industries make the upgrade to Fibrelite composite covers, especially in mission-critical areas.

LINDE MATERIAL HANDLING (UK) UNVEILS HEAVY-DUTY ELECTRIC FORKLIFTS TO SUIT BRICK AND BLOCK SECTOR
Linde MH is now taking orders from the UK brick and block industry for its new generation of larger capacity batterypowered forklift trucks with lifting capacities from 3.5 to 5 tons – outdoors as well as indoors.
Particularly suited to the most demanding applications across brick and block and other sectors requiring large specialist hydraulic attachments, the X35 – X50 models can be precisely configured to customers’ requirements while offering the highest standards of ergonomics and safety.
As well as being waterproof and dustproof, this higher weight class represents a significant milestone for customers. The vehicles can handle considerable gradients despite their large load capacities and consistently deliver lifting capacities at the payload limit.
This performance is achieved by means of a new generation of SRM+ motors whose efficiency and energy output shows improvement of up to five percent.
Björn Walter, Senior Product Manager Counterbalance Trucks, said:
Electric trucks that combine the performance characteristics and power of hydrostats with the dynamics, flexibility and zero emissions of battery-powered vehicles are exclusive to Linde.
“We can thus offer our customers a compelling combination of performance and sustainability.”
The twin-motor, front-wheel drive arrangement provides excellent traction and the robust steer axle permits tight wheel angle for surprising maneuverability in such a large capacity truck. In addition, these latest models offer the operator significantly more space and an improved view of the load and surroundings.
Electronic assistance systems extend the natural field of vision, and inform, warn or intervene to protect people, vehicles, goods in the surrounding area. An improvement in ride comfort has been achieved by isolating the operator’s workplace from the drive and steer axles and the mast.
These large capacity models are also available with the Linde Steer Control (LSC). With this option, the steering column and steering wheel are replaced by a mini-wheel or joystick integrated into the left armrest greatly improving forward visibility and further reducing stress and strain on the operator.

LYONS & ANNOOT - ONE BRICK AT A TIME, AND HOW TO IMPROVE THE APPRENTICESHIP JOURNEY
How one of the country’s longest established and well-known brickwork contractors, Lyons & Annoot, reinvented their apprenticeship scheme over the past few years. Constantly evolving their scheme to enable as many candidates that start on the apprenticeship journey complete their apprenticeship journey. How industry has embraced their apprenticeship scheme - in particular Keystone Lintels and Keyfix - in providing Lyons & Annoot Apprentices with extra training and opportunities to succeed.
Lyons & Annoot are one of The UK’s most well known and longest established specialist masonry contractors, operating since 1972 as a Partnership and 1986 as a Limited company. With an organic growth strategy they have continued to grow and invest in the future during all of this period.

Training & Education
An external mentor with large manufacturing facilities making many of the products that bricklayers will use daily during their career that will be open for them to visit as a group and meet with the people who design, who manufacture and who sell the products that they will use. Understand the basis of why a product is used and what goes into the finer details of this product. Understanding the regulations and acts behind the use of this product and its necessity to their use on site. They will also get the opportunity to potentially work on new products or upcoming products which will benefit the apprentice on what potentially could be coming to industry, and the manufacturer on what initial industry feedback is. The opportunity for CPDs done in their college or online on all products will be offered to the apprentice to ensure that they have further certification of their skill sets as they make their way on site. Of course, there is also the ‘MentorMe’ branded clothing and tool kits, which brings comradery on the part of the apprentices by having the best tools and clothing suitable for their profession, and acknowledgement of the apprentices’ progress in agreed assessments with Keystone and Lyons & Annoot and awarding the apprentices for this progress at regular intervals throughout the year. Presentations by the leaders of Keyfix and The Keystone Group so Apprentices fully understand that they are supported by the industry leaders in ensuring they have the best opportunities. Apprentices need the opportunity to succeed, and this is a further step in the way Lyons & Annoot can ensure the 100% completion rate of apprenticeships.
The industry must do more to find our next intake of apprentices and providing them with the adequate training and commitment- and we all must play our part in this.
Lyons & Annoot’s key demands of their Apprenticeship Scheme are as follows.
• The Apprenticeship Charter: This is an informal agreement signed by the Apprentice, The Company and the Apprentice’s Mentor on how they will all work together to make sure they can make the apprenticeship work for each individual.
• All of their Apprentices in the same college with the same tutor- this is ensuring consistency of learning and the same opportunity for all apprentices.
• Support from one of the industry’s largest and most recognisable suppliers in providing each apprentice with greater opportunities- MentorMe sponsored by Keyfix and Keystone Lintels- who provide the apprentices with tools and clothing, along with factory visits and talks to ensure that the apprentices know the materials that they will use and how it works.
• Monthly Reporting on site. All apprentices sit down with their Site Manger to review their progress and how they can assist them once each month
• An Apprenticeship Coordinator- a person to speak to the apprentices and to also provide the apprentices with somebody to speak for them with Senior Management.
• Lyons & Annoot strive for 100% completion of all apprentices. Work with manageable numbers of apprentices to provide as much assistance as possible to try and ensure that all complete. Cognitive Assessments done for all apprentices as they start- how Lyons & Annoot can help them and understand their individual needs.
• Learning doesn’t stop when the apprenticeship completes. Training Plans in place with newly qualified apprentices on how all can work together to help achieve their further career goals.
Lyons & Annoot recently opened applications for this year’s MentorMe Scheme and were blown away by having 157 applications to start as a Bricklayer under the Scheme. With Lyons & Annoot’s commitment to 100% completion then manageable numbers are approx. 8 Bricklaying Apprentices starting per year. However those who have applied and are unsuccessful in achieving a place on MentorMe need not overly worry as Lyons & Annoot have reached agreement with three other members of The Association of Brickwork Contractors in, providing suitable with individuals, sharing these strong candidates CVs and Personal Statements so that they may be able to achieve an Apprenticeship elsewhere.
It’s not just about Apprentices, Lyons & Annoot are constantly evolving their training provision and qualification requirements. Training is not a one size fits all but training for the sake of the individual and for the sake of the company. With numerous staff now being accessed to NVQs in numerous disciplines.

APPRENTICESHIP HELPS SAM MAKE CHILDHOOD AMBITION A REALITY
When Sam Sawyers was a 10-year-old he was sometimes allowed to go to work with his dad, who at the time was a bricklayer carrying out work on people’s homes.
Now, aged 22, Sam is an assistant site manager with Vistry Group having done an apprenticeship with the homebuilder. His memories of those childhood visits stick with him to this day.
“I would mainly sit in the van or maybe sometimes be allowed to lay a brick,” he said. “It was this that was the main thing that made me want to get into the trade as I can remember looking at my dad and the people he was working with while sitting in the van and just wanting to be there doing what they were doing and having the fun they seemed to be having while working.
“That’s when it clicked in my mind, I thought working on a building site – that’s what I want to do. I’ve never been interested in sitting at a desk.”
He now helps oversee the construction of Bovis Homes properties at Vistry’s Shinfield Meadows development in Shinfield, Berkshire, following in the footsteps of his dad Mark Allen, who is now a build director for the company.
Sam, who lives in Wantage and grew up in Leicester, started his career working alongside bricklayers as a hod carrier, and he also did labouring work for an agency. While working on these various jobs, he would see the site manager walking around, leading the team, and keeping things on track.
“I’d see them knowing all these things about every trade – and I only knew about one of them – and it intrigued me. I thought that looked like fun and I’d like to give it a go.’”
So, while working on a Vistry development at Sonning Common, in south Oxfordshire, where the company was building properties under its Linden Homes brand, he made an approach about doing an apprenticeship with the company.
The fact that he was already working at a Vistry location worked in his favour. “If they can already see you working hard, they know you’ll work hard on the apprenticeship,” he said.
He started his apprenticeship in June 2021 and learned about every aspect of construction including groundwork, scaffolding, bricklaying and carpentry. He also learned about the admin side, the regulations and, most importantly, the health and safety procedures.
Although he is still studying for his Higher National Certificate (HNC) his career has progressed already. Last year he stepped up to stand in for his site manager when he was on holiday for two weeks, and his cool, unflappable working style impressed his bosses.
“My dad has always taught me to keep calm and collected. The thing he says is if you’re ever panicking, take 10 seconds and carry on after that,” he said. “If I’m finding a problem I can’t get around, I always stop and take 10 seconds to think about it.”
That considered approach led to Sam being promoted to assistant site manager last autumn. He is full of praise for Vistry and how the company has supported him through all his training.
“Everyone at Vistry is really helpful. Everyone is there for you; they treat you like a friend. It’s one big family and everyone helps and knows who you are.”
Sam says he would recommend an apprenticeship to anyone who is keen to work in construction. He thinks it is a good idea to learn a trade and get hands-on experience on site, even if your ultimate aim is to go into management in the industry.
It has worked well for him, and he hopes that his apprenticeship has set him up well to progress through the ranks at Vistry.
He said: “I don’t think I would ever leave Vistry, as I can’t imagine finding another place of work, where you have that family atmosphere.”

APPRENTICESHIPS, THE CAREER ALTERNATIVE ROUTE AND SOLVING THE SKILLS SHORTAGES
James Trumper, is a sixth-generation member of the family-owned Neville Trust group of businesses based in Luton that includes Neville Special Projects, Neville Joinery and Neville Funerals. He made the decision that a degree apprenticeship, that will lead to him being fully qualified as a Quantity Surveyor via the programme offered by Westminster University, was the choice that best suited his needs, and his future plans.
James, who is the third generation of the Neville family to have attended Westminster University, following in the footsteps of his great grandfather, great uncle and grandfather, explains why this more vocational route appealed. “It seemed to me to really offer the best of both worlds.
“A lecture hall environment at Westminster University for the academic learning for my degree alongside the practical classroom of my everyday workplace, whether that be on or off-site. As well as being able to put my theoretical learning into practice almost immediately, which gives me hands-on experience, I also earn a salary and end up with a degree without the burden of a student loan.
“What I’m also realising is that employers are impressed that you can demonstrate direct experience of working in a business. “When I talk friends and family through the benefits of following this path, reactions are really very similar – it’s an absolute no brainer and why wouldn’t you.”
For employers, hiring an apprentice at all levels can be a productive, cost-effective way to expand or upskill their workforce and provides a solution to short term and long term skills shortages – with a cohort of home-grown talent and a new generation of young and aspiring employees who are informed about the training and development options open to them and willing to access them. And awareness of higher level degree apprenticeships are now being more widely offered by some universities and appreciated by employers.
Apprentices attend university one day per week during term time, whilst also working in a salary related role. Receiving both on and off-thejob specialist training Westminster
University apprentices also have the possibility of gaining additional professional accreditations depending on the course. This differs from the usual undergraduate degree as there are no tuition fees required from the student, and instead, fees are paid for by the employer and government, meaning there is no need for a student loan.
Apprentices also receive additional support through regular tripartite reviews (taking place between the apprentice, employer and Westminster University).
As explained by BDO Global, apprenticeships can still overlooked by young people. More than half believe that the award of a university degree makes it easier to earn a higher salary, than if they were to take the apprenticeship route. And more than a third of students believe they are less likely to reach the most senior position within a company if they do an apprenticeship. But it is argued that this misconception is on the turn. Rising student debt and the cost of living crisis is prompting parents, students and schools to revisit the apprenticeship option – with favourable results.
The University of Westminster offers a range of higher and degree apprenticeships at undergraduate and postgraduate level (Level 4 to Level 7) supporting various sectors. Their programmes combine academic study, practical experience, and the wider employment skills for career success.
Zsuzsanna Matyak, Corporate Communications and Public Affairs Officer from Westminster University explains: “As a progressive university, we look forward and anticipate what’s changing across industries and student perceptions. Embracing the new with energy and imagination, allows us to develop apprenticeship programmes that provide our students with the skills that they need.
“The University is known for the many ways in which we help our 19,000 students to realise their full potential, regardless of background. Our teaching is practical, relevant and contemporary, while our research is driven to make an impact in the world. We want people to realise that apprenticeships are a viable option for many individuals and employers, helping to plug the skills gap that many industries are facing.”

BREATHE SOME SWISS ALPINE AIR: MEET THE REVOLUTIONARY PAPR SYSTEM, SWISS AIR!
Protecting lungs is becoming increasingly important in the construction industry. In particular, it is imperative to protect oneself from the health implications of silica dust. We are proud to introduce you to optrel’s fully carbon-neutral blower respirator, where safety doesn’t have to mean discomfort.
Silica dust exposure is no more
Silica dust particles get into the lungs very easily. In the long term, there is a risk of pulmonary fibrosis and silicosis. This is precisely why it is important to equip workers on the construction site with respiratory protection systems. But standard respirators are associated with respiratory resistance and fatigue. Not with optrel’s swiss air blower respirator! The positive air pressure makes it easier to breathe, preventing users from feeling fatigued.
No need to sweat – no need to shave
The fresh air of swiss air brings a cooling effect that reduces sweating and promotes concentration. But not only that: Thanks to the overpressure system, the mask does not have to fit tightly, no fit tests are required and beards don’t need to be shaved either. Your construction worker does not have to take forced breaks because of the mask, as is commonly the case with standard dust masks. This results in increased performance and efficiency, combined with reliable respiratory protection.
Innovation and sustainability
The swiss air respirator is a reliable respiratory protection system that truly pays off. Not only that, the respirator lends workers an extremely professional appearance, thereby enhancing your image. The system is a one-off initial investment – after this, it is only the filters that need to be changed on a regular basis*. Using filters reduces waste compared to conventional dust masks. The fully carbon-neutral respirator is truly innovative, as attested by its winning the Red Dot Award.
* Filter changes depend on the dust load. But that is solved very easily: The swiss air respirator indicates the degree of contamination of the filter.
Compatible with all common helmets, ear defenders and goggles
Swiss air half mask gives users all the freedom they need. It’s a flexible choice that can be combined with any protective headgear, hearing protection or protective eyewear. This is an unparalleled feature of swiss air, making it suitable for use in all applications where respiratory protection is required or recommended.
Welcome to the Swiss Alps, welcome to optrel swiss air.
Swiss air is the revolutionary PAPR from optrel and is testament to everything the company represents: The Swiss manufacturer of respiratory protection and automatic welding helmets is committed to delivering unique benefits in its products. That’s why around one quarter of the optrel team is dedicated to continuously researching and developing innovations that make everyday work easier. With swiss air, users live and breathe innovation.

THE GROWTH OF WOMEN’S WORKWEAR
The women’s workwear market is growing at a rapid rate. More and more industries are expanding to embrace women workers, from more heavy-duty and construction sectors to transport, and higher corporate positions. This drive-in inclusivity means a new collection of workers looking for suitable clothing and uniform.
Here, we will explore how the market is expanding and the challenges and opportunities it will face.
The trending growth of women’s workwear in the market
The women’s workwear market has grown substantially in the past years, with an expectation for this to continue exponentially between 2022 and 2027. In fact, in Germany, which has the largest workwear economy, as of 2020, women’s workwear has seen a 5.2% growth increase.
In the Netherlands, women’s workwear has seen a bigger increase in growth than men’s wear between 2015 and 2020 – with women’s workwear seeing an increase of 19.2%, whereas men’s workwear had only seen an increase of 11.2%.
In Belgium, women’s workwear has seen a growth increase (10.5%), whereas men’s workwear has had a negative growth increase of -2.2%. This shows the strength of women’s workwear interest as growth is continually occurring, even in declining workwear economies.
Driving factors in women’s workwear
As more women start approaching previously closed industries, such as STEM and construction sectors, the disparity between men’s and women’s workwear has been drawn into question. In fact, movements within industry sectors are now calling for better accessibility to work garments suitable for women workers. For example, female tradies are calling for properly fitting hi-vis jackets as the loose fabric of being forced to wear men’s hi-vis is actually dangerous for the jobsite.
As the industries remain maleorientated, so do the clothing. This has led to 9 out of 10 women finding it difficult to get appropriate protective wear. Having fitting PPE is important for the protection, health and safety of all workers, so drive-in women’s workwear is coming from the necessity for the proper clothing.
Challenges and opportunities
Work from home
The recent change in working flexibility and locations has resulted in a decline in the need for specific workwear. This could potentially see a decrease in women’s workwear as we become more comfortable with our new working arrangements. Many may be less inclined to spend their money on new work clothing if the majority of their time is spent working from home.
Rather than affording specific corporate wear, many are now adopting more
relaxed dress codes. In fact, 22% of companies encourage daily casual wear at work – meaning less pressure is placed on employees to adopt workwear, and so this might see women’s workwear take a step back as more look towards comfortable means of clothing.
Diversity innovations
However, as the increase suggests, there is some desire for women’s workwear. And the current interest in returning to office in a hybrid fashion could mean more innovations. As self-expression becomes more apparent within the workforce, we might see clothing shift from men’s and women’s workwear to a more androgynous form of fashion. Clothing may drift from tight, form-fitting designs to more gender-inclusive and customisable fittings.
We have seen this desire for comfort, diversity, and inclusivity with the new dress code adaptations made by Virgin Atlantic Airlines. Pilots and cabin crew uniforms are now not prescribed based on birth gender; instead, staff can choose clothing that is more self-expressive and comfortable for them.
Industry-specific women’s workwear
Advancements are occurring across workwear fashion, including more breathable fabrics, waterproofing and fireproofing. As more women step into heavy-duty roles, including construction, health, and emergency sectors, it is important that clothing evolves too. From the development of flex and stretch fabrics, which makes working safer and more comfortable, to wearable technology, which can range in functions from fall protection capabilities to sensor detection.
Women’s workwear is currently increasing in popularity, with imports finding positive growth in this fashion sector, even above men’s workwear imports.
And the opportunities with this increased interest in women’s clothing mean that companies can now support a larger portion of their staff. Not only is this important for the inclusion of women in industry sectors, such as STEM industries, but it can also help support identity, diversity, and inclusion across businesses, as a focus on women’s workwear can help push diverse size and design variations.
