USM supporting the future study of architecture in the UK The new London School of Architecture (LSA) site in Mare Street, East London incorporates an open plan library that houses striking furniture donated by Swiss modular furniture company USM. The LSA was created in 2015 by journalist turned educator Will Hunter to ensure that the study of architecture was open to a broader range of students from differing backgrounds, making courses accessible to talented students who were

unable to study architecture due to financial restrictions. The LSA fills the gap between academic and professional life; students in their first year are placed in one of the 100 architecture practices that form part of its network for three days a week, effectively learning on the job and earning money to help off-set course fees. When USM were recently approached to donate furniture for the new Mare Street building, they were more than happy to help. A large bookcase in steel blue dominates the LSA library and houses books donated by various practices, whilst an adjacent storage cabinet in beige completes the space. The clean lines of the furniture compliment the environment and the longevity in the design of the iconic furniture speaks for itself in terms of sustainability; the modular nature of the furniture means that both the bookcase and the cabinet can be reconfigured if the needs of the library change. Nothing needs to be thrown away, as thanks to the retrospective compatibility of USM products, previously purchased parts can be combined with newly purchased parts. Ian Weddell – USM UK CEO comments: “We were delighted to donate these pieces to the school. As a company we’re interested in helping to support the education of architects and designers. If you give people a good product to work with at the beginning of their careers it may set the standard going forward and create a positive level of expectation” The LSA uses London as it canvas rather than relying on an iconic headquarters, keeping fees low by having minimum physical space. Designed by Hesselbrand there is very little in the way between students and teachers, nothing is hidden so you can see how the space is made and what it is doing. Will Hunter – Director & Founder of LSA explains: “We wanted the building to be filled with a constellation of like-minded organisations, engaging with brands interested in innovation in architecture and design. Working with USM was about working with a company that matched our own values – I like its rigorous design language”

Caesarstone launches Primordia: A new addition to the brand’s award-winning Metropolitan Collection Primordia’s organic appearance reflects topological strata; alluvial layers in stone created over aeons. The material combines these natural aspects with a rough finish, celebrating the beauty of patina and texture while reinventing the kitchen as a striking cooking space outfitted with chef-quality appliances and sophisticated accents. 4043 Primordia’s industrial look is accentuated by its unique imperfections; a theme common to each colour in Caesarstone’s Metropolitan Collection. Its cool grey complexion echoes the character of concrete, evoking a contemporary feel. Composed across its light grey base, soft mineral marks in off-whites and greys combine with darker veils of grey and brown to reflect the oxidised rusts found in nature. This authentic effect is completed by subtle traces of faint yellow and washed green, giving the surface more body.

4043 Primordia was born from the extensive and continuous research conducted by Caesarstone’s inhouse design team in collaboration with some of the world’s foremost forecasters, not least Li Edelkoort, the renowned design and fashion trend guru. Form Follows Food, is the highly anticipated 2019 trend book produced by Caesarstone together with Li Edlekoort. The book takes readers on a journey through the design and culinary worlds, exploring how the two have merged. Conceptual Concrete is one of the trends explored within in the book, illustrating how industrialinspired concrete-stone hybrid surfaces are evolving, of which Primordia is a leading example. 4043 Primordia comes in rough concrete finish and will be available in standard slab size, in either 20mm and 30mm thickness.

Caesarstone Chief Designer, Mor Krishner, comments: “With its imperfections, delicate patinas, and rough texture, it has a truly unique beauty. The material plays in the boundaries between natural and industrial materials: when the natural starts to look industrial and when an industrial object ages and starts to look more organic.” 4043 Primordia’s visual details evoke the emotion of real stone, suited to kitchen tops, splashbacks and cabinet cladding, as well as bathroom interiors. As a monumental island, its neutral palette is versatile, blending with other materials such as concrete and dark oak flooring. In industrial spaces, the surface is complemented by heavier elements such as corrugated steel, compressed grey felt, or industrial hardware in brushed or stainless metal. Raw terracotta tile adds an organic accent, while brighter shots of colour reveal surprising contrasts. These glowing tones, such as glazed ceramics in mustard yellow or dark jade, also dress the countertop, bringing a sense of warmth. Jon Stanley, VP Marketing for Caesarstone UK says, “There is always a tremendous level of excitement around a new Caesarstone product launch and Primordia illustrates why. Brought to life by our outstanding inhouse R&D and manufacturing team, it applies Caesarstone’s strengths in trend research, design innovation and manufacturing prowess to powerful effect. Absolutely on trend and totally unique, Primordia takes surfaces to the next level.” June 2019 Luxury Interiors Magazine 05

Apple Carnegie Library breathes new life into a much-loved city icon The opening of Apple Carnegie Library in the heart of Washington DC marks the revitalisation of an important monument in the city’s history. As the city’s first public library, and its first desegregated public building, the Carnegie Library of Washington DC played a central role in community life for over 70 years since its opening in 1903. After a period of neglect, Apple Carnegie Library continues the traditions of the building by creating a new platform for learning, performance and art for a new generation. Foster + Partners worked in close collaboration with the design team at Apple led by chief design officer, Sir Jonathan Ive to give this cultural icon a new lease of life. “I love the synergy between old and new, the juxtaposition of the historic fabric and contemporary design. It is the layers of history which create the rich tapestry of urban life. In its ‘new’ phase of life, Apple Carnegie Library will be a way for us to share our ideas and excitement about the products we create, while giving people a sense of community and encouraging and nurturing creativity,” said Sir Jonathan Ive. The listed Beaux-Arts style building has been restored to its previous grandeur, with entrances on both sides of the north-south axis, creating an inviting urban route through the building. The southern entrance, which was the original entrance to the library, is fronted by a grand plaza that will host public concerts and events.

08 Luxury Interiors Magazine June 2019

Project The heart of the building has been transformed into a soaring double-height space, capped by a new skylight that brings natural light deep into the interior spaces. Here, the Forum forms the vibrant, creative hub of the building, where experts from various fields will entertain and inspire the local people. The audience can view the performances and workshops from two levels, creating a lively and interactive experience. Stefan Behling, Head of Studio, Foster + Partners commented: “We felt a great sense of responsibility in giving this much-loved monument a new life. Public libraries like this one have been the heart and soul of communities for decades, and we are proud to be able to carry forward that same spirit of learning and creativity into Apple Carnegie Library. The materiality and detailing of the historic façades and interior spaces have been carefully preserved, working closely with the National Trust for Historic Preservation and other conservation experts.â€? The entire palette of materials used in the interior was chosen to suit the historic surroundings, inspired by the distinctive early 20th century detailing in the building. The project is driven by a very sustainable agenda, which included upgrading the historic building by reintroducing natural ventilation and the generous use of daylight, as well as a commitment to locally sourced materials. A grand staircase leads to the DC History Center on the second floor and the Carnegie Gallery in the basement, which displays historic photographs and documents for the public to learn about the origins and history of the building. Apple Carnegie Library also reinvigorates the surrounding park, while enhancing the northern entrance to create a clear route through the building that strengthens the connections between the northern and southern ends of the site.

Choosing a new kitchen or refreshing an existing one Whether you are planning an entirely new kitchen design or simply reviving your existing one, in this article we are offering our advice on what to think about when redesigning your kitchen or refreshing your current space. Kitchen planning The planning stage should be the first step before making any changes to your kitchen’s design. This is your opportunity to think about how you actually use the space currently and how you would like to use the new one. It’s important to think about how you move around the space and what elements you use most. For example, usually, the fridge will be located close to the worktops so that you don’t have to keep walking around to get your produce. In turn, the worktops should be in a well-lit part of the kitchen with easy access to the hob, making it easy to transfer your prepared food to your cookware. It’s important to remember to keep your water together, so place the dishwasher near the sink and for extra ease, put your bin area near your sink too so it’s easier to reach. Understanding how much storage space you need is very important. Do you need more than you currently have, do you want open shelving or deep cupboards to hide away your appliances and utensils? If you are going to use the space for entertaining, you may want to consider a breakfast bar, kitchen island or introduce technology to connect your music devices to play in your kitchen.

Fully tailor-made kitchens at RB12 Phew! That’s a lot to think about, so let us do the work for you. At RB12, along with our trusted kitchen suppliers Minacciolo, Binova and Miton, we can provide a full kitchen design and fit-out for your home. We have recently added our very own ‘RB12 Mini Kitchens’ to our portfolio which we developed for smaller spaces such as studios, bedsits, self-catering holiday lets and student accommodation. A design will carefully be put together from your brief and once agreed, the kitchen is built from scratch. It will then leave the manufacturing facilities, go through strict quality control and finally carefully packaged for dispatch. We can then organise expert fitters to ensure a perfect fit, followed by installation of any kitchen appliances and additional features adhering to appropriate safety standards. Refreshing your existing kitchen If you aren’t in your forever home, you may not want to invest in building a new kitchen from scratch. However, there’s no doubt you’ll still want to inject your own style into it, so refreshing your kitchen with some more costeffective updates might be a better option for you. Take a look at some of our top tips for transforming your existing kitchen... A fresh lick of paint Repainting your kitchen unit doors and the walls is a less expensive way of giving your kitchen a refreshing new look and feel. Make sure to use paints that are suitable for kitchen environments and are moisture-resistant and washable. Replace your existing worktops and unit fronts This gives the impression of an entirely new kitchen without the full cost of redesigning the whole layout. Even just changing your kitchen door knobs which can transform the space and can give an kitchen a real lift. Update your lighting Adding a new light fixture to your kitchen can change the entire feel of your room, especially if you are short on space. Spotlights or under-counter lights add a modern touch, but for a bit more character you could think about a statement pendant light, like the ones from Brokis pictured right

beautifully with the range’s contemporary dark grey finish. Replace the kitchen floor Whilst vinyl flooring is generally the cheapest option, natural materials such as stone and wood are a great option for a more modern, elegant kitchen space. Both stone & wood have long been used in kitchen areas and can be beautiful, durable and long-lasting. These are a sound investment as long as you choose a robust and practical product. Decorate with tiles Installing a stylish tiled backsplash behind your cooker or along the back of the worktops is a wonderful way to transform your kitchen. Tiles are easy to clean and water-resistant making them perfect for cooking environments. At RB12, we have a huge range of contemporary tile suppliers for you to choose from including Botteganove, Fornace Brioni, Gypsum, Huguet, Made a Mano and Ornamenta. Our top 5 kitchen units and worktops Lavastone worktop by Made a Mano - These amazing natural lava stone tiles are sourced from active volcano, Mount Etna in Sicily. They are extremely durable making them perfect for the kitchen and provide long-lasting beauty in many different styles and variations. Mina Kitchen Units by Minacciolo - This kitchen collection is a successful blend of highly innovative technology and sleek Italian beauty. So full of character, this kitchen is delicately crafted and has exciting details, like the bright red temperature knobs that contrast

Metal worktops – At RB12 we love the professional and stylish look of a metal worktop but we’ve also seen a rise in distressed metals as well as the more traditional polished steel. Natural Skin Kitchen Units by Minacciolo - Natural Skin is a practical kitchen range, intended to allow versatile use of any living space and is now available in a stunning copper finish. Fenix worktops – This is an innovative and hygienic man-made material that is durable, anti-stain and also heat-resistant. The surface composed of a dense grid of crosspolymers with their own memory, which can be reactivated by the application of heat. Pretty amazing if you ask us! Interview

Luxury Interiors Magazine spoke with the Founder and Director of OS Designs: Oz Lancaster 1.

What determined your passion for interior design?

My creativity from early age; I always wanted to be a designer but didn’t know which kind till I saw my first Architectural Digest at the age of 7. 2.

Have you always been a creative person?

Yes, I used to draw on bread, my dad’s car, and the walls in our house! I started taking private art lessons from a very early age; I still have all my sketches, organised into months and years, from when I was 3. 3.

What inspired you to set up your own Interior Design Company has this always been your dream?

I was 28 and I had been working in a furniture company as a director. They asked me to set up their interior design department. I worked day and night to establish their interior design section. As I set up every single stage of the company, the scary thought of having my own company didn’t seem so scary anymore. I bit the bullet and went for it, and ! never looked back! 4.

Do you have a signature style?

Yes I do - however it’s important to respect the architecture and our clients wishes when it comes to the various projects. It’s important to have the right brief, and it’s important to execute the brief accurately and with flair. 5.

What have been your favourite interior design projects that you have worked on?

I have truly enjoyed every project that we worked on to date. But two projects really stand out for me – our Manchester Villa, and the Grade-II listed heritage town house renovation in North Hyde Park. Each has taken five years to complete, and we have been involved in every step of the journey with our clients, from submitting planning applications, 12 Luxury Interiors Magazine June 2019

to bespoke furniture design, and full procurement. 6.

Talk us through your design process, how are your ideas brought to life?

I start with the basics. Seeing the room without any furniture and understanding the layout on the plan, I immediately start sketching. Functionality comes first, then layer by layer we make the design process an easy journey for our clients. I always try to picture myself living in the property, and in some cases I have actually June 2019 Luxury Interiors Magazine 13

Interview stayed in the properties to better understand how my clients will live there. My sketches come alive with my design team helping me to execute the ideas with 3D renderings and material boards. We show to our clients exactly what they will get at every step of the process. Most importantly as we progress along this journey, we take care of all the necessary coordination and tiniest details. 7.

Who or what inspires you?

Music, travelling, new experiences, art, reading tons of books‌ I always take photos of the things that I find interesting whether relevant to interiors or not; and most importantly, my family who inspire me all the time. 8.

What would be your advice for other women who want to set up their own business?

Be confident in who you are, be aware of what your weaknesses are - but mostly, focus on what your strengths are! Embrace your innate qualities and passion; and get help on improving any areas of perceived weakness. Don’t be shy to ask for help, and make sure you know every aspect of the company, and the wider industry. 9.

Are luxury interiors, in your opinion becoming more popular; is there more demand for this design aesthetic?

Interior design is becoming a need instead of merely a trend or popularity. More and more, our lives are becoming hectic, and our houses need to serve our needs and also still should be the soft landing cave we are all craving. Interior Architecture and Interior

14 Luxury Interiors Magazine June 2019

Design play a huge role to make our homes practical and functional. From material selection to mechanical engineering, a home should serve both aesthetically and practically. 10. What are your future ambitions? Are there any projects you have upcoming that you are excited about? I find each and every project very stimulating - each project has its own character and challenges. I find every moment in every stage of the project very exciting, and a massive learning curve which I relish. 11.

What advice do you have for young designers who aspire to set up their own interior design company?

Go for it ! and believe in it 100%, give your best, be passionate, be dedicated to your own path. Be aware of the trends and your colleagues, but never compare yourself with others or competitors; everybody’s path is different so believe in your own unique path so much that you create your own trends, your own world, and complete each project with your whole heart.

HUTIG FURNITURE and FLOORING THE EVOLUTION OF VENEER Within the furniture industry there are many speculations and discussions going on about the advantages and disadvantages of using solid timber or veneer. There are many different opinions and preferences but nobody seems to know what’s best overall. Using veneer is an ancient way of producing furniture. Most antique furniture pieces are made by using some sort of veneer. In the late 50’s and 60’s more modern materials were used and nowadays people think veneer is a thin commercialized unsustainable form of cheep material, often associated with the use of MDF and chipboard. And to be honest they might be right when you look at the lower priced veneered pieces of furniture. This is probably the reason why one of the big high street furniture retailers uses the slogan ‘no veneer in here’. Is veneer really that bad? The answer is NO; because when using the highest specification machinery, a deep knowledge of material selection and finishing processes, properly made veneered furniture (or as we call it - engineered furniture) is more durable and more sustainable than furniture made out of solid wood.

Wintersteiger Saw Blade Evolution: Hutig Furniture and Flooring combines the advantages of solid wood and veneer and eliminates the disadvantages. We manufacture our own sawn veneer in-house, cut to exactly the required thickness for its purpose. Then the veneer is permanently bonded onto a high quality engineered solid timber core. The result: a modern piece of high quality furniture with a handcrafted

finish; sustainable and guaranteed to last many lifetimes. We would like to give you an inside to the world of Hutig Furniture and Flooring. It started in the year 2000, when craftsman John MacGregor started Highland Bespoke Furniture. In 2008 financial Director Hans Mol joined and together John and Hans continued as Highland Bespoke Furniture Ltd. Based in Brora in the Highlands of Scotland the company has now 5 employees and further growth is expected over the next few years. At the January Furniture Show 2019 Highland Bespoke Furniture Ltd introduced their new brand Hutig Furniture and Hutig Flooring. How do we do it? When it comes to timber furniture cutting technology has moved on big time. We are using state of the art sawing technology to realize our goals and ambitions. Seen in operation our new Wintersteiger bandsaw is the most astonishing sight for all who come to visit us at our workshop We manufacture the veneer in thicknesses to suit the finished

Processing a ‘fallen’ European Oak product’s mechanical/ durability requirements and also to achieve design features of grain pattern etc to suit the client/designer’s vision. The ability to use heavy grain figuring means we create a unique product not possible in either commercial veneer or in solid timber.

Sustainability: Sustainability is one of the most important features in the production of Hutig Furniture. Mainly native locally sourced timbers are used (fallen trees from estates in the area), though species that cannot be grown here are available as well.

We also use solid timber where veneer may not add to the look/ feel of the finished product – in end battens for example.

Our sawing techniques produce 6 times the yield in a log and waste is reduced from 35% to around 5%. The engineered core material

14 Oak saplings, 5 months old

is made from trees specially grown for the furniture industry in sustainable forests in Italy and Spain. All materials used are environmental friendly and selected from sustainable sources. All components are produced inhouse. Replanting: In this case, acorns were gathered in the area of the fallen tree. After sprouting the young trees will be planted in the area where the mother tree was fallen. Flooring: Besides sustainable furniture Hutig produces flooring also. This makes Hutig the first engineered flooring manufacturer in Scotland. Brushed (Scottish) Oak and brushed American White Ash are amongst the choices we offer at the moment. For more information about the sustainability of Hutig Furniture and Flooring and about our products, please visit our website www.hutig.com and follow us on Facebook @hutigfurniture.

H&M CONSCIOUS, CASSINA, PHILIPPE STARCK, AND OCADO AMONG WINNERS OF VEGAN HOMEWARE AWARDS 2019 From Apple-Leather Designer Furniture to Down-Free Bedding, PETA Launches List of Best Buys for a Beautiful, Ethical Home As demand for compassionate and sustainable decor and furnishings grows – keeping pace with the skyrocketing interest in vegan living – PETA’s third annual Vegan Homeware Awards recognise this year’s top designs and innovations for a cruelty-free home. H&M Home has won Best WoolFree Rug for its recycled-cotton patterned rug from the Conscious collection; Weaver Green was awarded Best Wool-Free Ottoman for its Kasbah Ink Ottoman, made with recycled plastic bottles; the award for Best Feather-Free Cushion went to Hetty + Sam for its Duck Egg & Copper Cushion; Eden Perfumes nabbed the Best Vegan Candle award for its soywax Lime, Basil & Mandarin candle; House of Kind won the Best Wool-Free Blanket award for its handcrafted Polku Throw; The Fine Bedding Company was awarded Best Down-Free Bed Linen for its vegan Smartdown range made with recycled fibres; and The Best Companion Animal Accessory award was won by Ocado for its Scruffs Eco Donut Dog Bed from the Fetch range, made with recycled fleece.

Other winners include the luxury Italian furniture brand Cassina, which received the Collaboration Award for teaming up with design icon Philippe Starck – who created furniture using apple waste for the brand’s Croque la Pomme installation – and Dutch designer Tjeerd Veenhoven, who won the Innovation Award for a collection of beautiful vegan rugs made with palm leather. “It’s easier than ever for compassionate consumers to

adorn their abodes with beautiful, cruelty-free homeware,” says PETA Director Elisa Allen. “PETA is delighted to honour the forward-thinking companies that are meeting the booming demand for vegan decor with fashionable and functional pieces that are sure to make every space shine.” PETA, whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”, has released several exposés revealing that many animals killed for leather endure castration, branding, and tail-docking without painkillers before finally being skinned and dismembered – even while they’re still conscious. Terrified geese are painfully live-plucked for their feathers, and workers punch and kick gentle sheep and even break their necks while violently shearing them for their wool. In addition to being kinder to animals, vegan fabrics – natural or synthetic – have an environmental footprint that’s minor compared to the devastation caused by animal agriculture and the chemicals that are often necessary to prevent animal-derived materials from decomposing in people’s homes. For more information on each category and for photos of all the winning products, please visit PETA.org.uk. June 2019 Luxury Interiors Magazine 19

Neolith® makes waves at Hotel Llevant Bespoke Sintered Stone surfaces specified for cool and contemporary Costa Bravan Hotel For award-winning architect Pau Llimona, the Mediterranean Sea has always possessed a romantic mystique. The centre of the world for many classical civilisations, its rugged coastlines and azure waters have informed its unique cultural identity, inspiring all who visit from poets and authors to painters and sculptors. It has also had a major impact on local approaches to architecture, with many buildings possessing a distinctive design, particularly on Spain’s north east coast. This is the essence Llimona set out to capture by specifying Neolith® in a recent project. Sea changes When Llimona was commissioned by Hotel Llevant, located in Llafranc on the Costa Brava, Spain, to redesign and redecorate the whole building’s interiors, he saw the perfect opportunity to incorporate the intrinsic link between the local area and the sea into his design concept. Hotel Llevant is a Costa Bravan institution, founded in 1935 by Maria Gratacós Lluensí, the current owner’s great grandmother. She built up the property from a

20 Luxury Interiors Magazine June 2019

Project

small guesthouse to a luxurious hotel and restaurants. While the hotel has continually evolved with changing trends and tastes, it has faithfully maintained its enchanting identity. Maintaining this balance was an essential part of Llimona’s initial brief. A luxurious, three-storey hotel with a renowned restaurant, one of the establishment’s more unusual features is that every room has its own balcony plunge pool. As such, it was an ambitious project from the start With vistas across the Bay of Llafranc, stretching out over the horizon towards distant Sardinia, Llimona knew he had to deliver an ethereal interior as extraordinary as the hotel’s setting. He went down to the town’s waterfront for creative stimulus. On the beach As a light breeze rippled the water, which gently lapped the sun-kissed shore, his imagination was fired. Suddenly transported back to his childhood, he recalled a local phenomenon, the Levantadas – waves formed by the Levant, an easterly wind which blows across the Iberian Peninsula. The large swells are sometimes so big they flood the interiors of houses and buildings located on the seafront of coastal towns like Llafranc; an attempt by nature to reclaim its authority over man. It was Llimona’s eureka moment, providing the artistic drive behind the project. Essentially, he wanted to capture the full atmosphere and experience of the Levantadas, from the fluid feel of sand underfoot to the exhilarating sight of the cresting and crashing surf.

Enigmatic oceans Pau Llimona is no stranger to the creation of otherworldly concepts. In 2016 he worked with Pritzker Prize winners RCR Arquitectes on the multi award winning interiors of Albert Adriá’s celebrated Enigma restaurant. Here Llimona created a dreamscape in which the world famous chef could demonstrate his singular approach to cuisine as part of a wider, multi-sensory experience. Using custom-made slabs of Neolith to achieve the desired effect, it was during this project that he discovered the unrivalled aesthetic potential of Sintered Stone.

The interior would communicate the mercurial nature of the sea, both calming and tumultuous, as straightforward as it is fathomless. Like the remarkable waves, it would need to be dramatic and overwhelming, enveloping the whole interior, instilling a sense of awe in guests as soon as they enter the hotel.

As Llimona says, “Working closely with Neolith on the Enigma project gave me a deep insight into the properties of the material and the huge scope of what can be achieved using the surface. From a designer’s perspective, the advantages are threefold: you can achieve decorative effects not possible on many naturally occurring stones, it’s super resistant and it’s very easy to cut to size and install.”

In Llimona’s own words, “When I was younger, these Levantadas seemed incredible to me, so I took the opportunity to interpret this childhood memory of a hotel filled with water and translate it into interiors.”

“Furthermore,” he continues, “it’s 100% natural, which particularly appealed to me when I was looking to specify materials for Hotel Llevant where I wanted to evoke the aura of a naturally occurring event.” June 2019 Luxury Interiors Magazine 21

Project From sea to shining sea At the beginning of the design process, Llimona approached Neolith to discuss requirements. The Sintered Stone brand’s interest was immediately piqued by the challenge put to them by the architect. A major component of the overall aesthetic would be textured flooring, specified throughout the hotel. Principally, the architect wanted a surface which would recreate the roughness and shine of the seabed, ever so slightly pearlescent. When illuminated, the surface would reveal subtle flecks of blue and red, recalling the sparkling reflection of the bright sun on water.

they go above and beyond to ensure creative freedom for the architect.” World of water To further harness the effects of the Levantadas, Llimona focused his attention to the ceilings. Specifically, he wanted to represent the dissipating foam of a breaking wave. This would place guests in the heart of the tide itself. To achieve this ambitious stippled effect, he used layers of plaster punctuated with cleverly angled lighting to imply the gaps in the salty froth where the darker colour of the sea comes through.

This desire led to Neolith developing a unique, custommade colour which became a major design component in the project. In order to achieve the desired surface texture, a Riverwashed finish was used.

Rising up through the hotel from the restaurant to the rooms the texture of the ceiling becomes smoother with every floor, emphasising the evanescent nature of a wave.

Using a skilled local fabricator, Marbres Ferran Reja, the slabs were cut into various sized rectangular tiles and laid to create an interesting uniform, but irregular, tessellating effect with a clean finish.

The use of metal rods throughout the interiors capture the meaning behind the word Levantadas which literally means to ‘to lift up’. Large spec, floor to ceiling windows also allow daylight to flood into the building further emphasising the cool, airy atmosphere of the hotel.

For Llimona, it’s Neolith’s willingness and inventiveness which sets it apart from other materials manufacturers. He explains, “We chose Neolith because, aside from their already extensive collection of patterns and colours, they are one of the very few brands to offer bespoke designed surfaces. Standard manufacturing procedures and processes usually are what they are and it’s impossible to deviate. Not so with Neolith. “For me this is the best aspect of working with them,

22 Luxury Interiors Magazine June 2019

Commenting on the finished interiors the owners of Hotel Llevant say, “Pau has done an incredible job. The hotel’s interiors really offer guests a totally immersive experience. It’s like stepping into another world! A real highlight was having the opportunity to create a material unique to our requirements, one which reflected the architect’s vision, it’s something which doesn’t happen often.”

Introducing Regent’s Crescent London’s only Grade 1 listed new build: a Masterpiece in Modern Living This month marks the unveiling of one of the capital’s most illustrious and historically fascinating new addresses: Regent’s Crescent. Situated on the very edge of Regent’s Park in Marylebone, this exquisite development by CIT comprises 67 Grade 1 listed apartments and nine Garden Villas set behind an elegant façade originally designed by John Nash in 1820. This majestic building and the surrounding environs of Regent Street and Regent’s Park were famously commissioned by the Prince Regent, later King George IV, to house his closest friends and family. The development was granted Grade 1 listing and has long been regarded as a splendid example of Regency architecture and style.

24 Luxury Interiors Magazine June 2019

Project Award-winning architects, PDP London, are overseeing the meticulous exterior build and honouring Nash’s extraordinary talent and creative vision in a spectacular re-imagining. Residents will be greeted by grand front doors featuring Regency-style fanlights, stone steps and traditional railings leading them into a double-height entrance lobby and onto an imperial staircase that sweeps down to the concierge desk and overlooks the private gardens. Other Regency-inspired features include the reintroduction of chimney stacks and the preservation of a celebrated 18th century ice well discovered on site. International architecture and interiors studio Millier are developing the project’s beautiful interiors, reinterpreting the building’s refined Regency grandeur to complement contemporary living and combining beautifully articulated spaces with discreet modern luxury. Materials such as herringbone timber flooring, a range of luxurious marbles and ornate plaster mouldings feature throughout the property’s astonishingly proportioned rooms which boast ceiling heights of up to 4.2m. Refined neutral palettes celebrate the building’s abundance of natural light with accents of burnished bronze throughout. Its new incarnation, due to complete Q2 next year, will rectify wartime bomb damage to restore the truest version of Nash’s original vision alongside the exemplary modern design of the new high-specification residences and sophisticated communal areas. Regent’s Crescent also offers rare access to the 8 acres of exclusive private Park Crescent and Park Square resident’s gardens as well as one and a half acres of secluded private gardens to the rear of the property featuring lawns, mature trees and planted borders designed by landscape architects Bowles & Wyer. Of the development, Head of Sales at CIT Chris Richmond comments, ‘Regent’s Crescent is a remarkable scheme that we are proud to be working on. Its unique combination of enchanting and historical importance, outstanding original design, unsurpassed new build quality and remarkable location make it a very rare and special offering for the capital.’ Set to become an internationally-renowned address, residents will have exclusive access to a range of high calibre amenities with a 9,000sqft basement including a spa, 20m swimming pool, spa-pool, sauna and steam room, private cinema, valet-operated underground parking, business centre and 24-hour concierge and security. Access from Regent’s Park and Great Portland Street Underground stations are both within 3 minutes walk whilst Marylebone High Street, Marylebone Lane and Charlotte Street are within easy reach and offer a superb choice of boutiques, cafes and restaurants. The Wallace Collection, British Museum, Royal Academy of Music Museum and Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre offer a range of cultural highlights in addition to the Royal Park that residents will overlook. Willmott Dixon Interiors provides funds for Thames Reach’s battle to end street homelessness What started as an idea to help homeless people in south London has led to a Camberwell-based charity receiving £24,470 to help their quest to give disadvantaged women better opportunities in life. Willmott Dixon Interiors (WDI) initially teamed up with Thames Reach, based at Peckham Road, to support their ‘Moving In, Moving On’ programme to equip women who experience long-term unemployment and homelessness with practical skills and confidence to help them find employment. It was the idea of Connor Lambourne, a building manager at WDI who, as part of a companywide trainee challenge, wanted to support ‘Moving In, Moving On’ by leading a team delivering skills training and mentoring to a group of women supported by the charity. Connor’s project involved over ten women from Thames Reach learning important skills and making new contacts over a number of weeks as they helped Connor and his WDI team paint, decorate and generally improve Age UK’s Southwark and Lewisham Healthy Living Centre in Bermondsey to provide residents with a better place to socialise and make new friends. The success of the project led to Connor winning Willmott Dixon’s national trainee challenge, which led to Thames Reach being the chosen charity when

26 Luxury Interiors Magazine June 2019

Willmott Dixon chief executive Rick Willmott led a senior management team in completing the gruelling Cyclotour du Léman, a cycling event in Switzerland where riders pedal 180km around Lake Léman on one day, starting and finishing in Zurich. Nearly ten riders achieved the feat and in the process raised £24,470, with the money handed over this week by Connor to Thames Reach’s fundraising manager Catherine Hickey, who said: “We are extremely grateful to Willmott Dixon Interiors for their fantastic efforts in raising funds which will go towards supporting our employment and skills programmes at our Employment Academy in Camberwell. Our full range of courses and workshops enable people to get the skills and training they need to find employment or volunteer work. “On behalf of Thames Reach, we’d like to say a huge thank you for taking part in this challenge and helping us work towards our vision of ending street homelessness.” WDI is behind some iconic London projects like fittingout a new home for the Design Museum and creating the London Screen Academy in north London to train future film directors. The company has delivered over 200,000m² of new interior space in London over the last five years, including new hospitality facilities at Twickenham’s East Stand. Connor said, “Our company vision is that we have a purpose beyond profit and this includes our people actively helping to support and strengthen society’s wellbeing. This means all our people get to be involved in projects to help those less advantaged than us and I’m really proud of what we have achieved for Thames Reach.”

Designer Contracts celebrates significant increase in business Designer Contracts, the UK’s largest flooring contractor, is celebrating another record year. Latest end of year figures show a 15 per cent year-onyear growth with company turnover now in excess of £40 million and more than 300 employees working within the business. Critical to the growth was a 25% surge in volume from its central distribution facility in Kettering which maintains a constant £2 million stock level, recently boosted to £3 million to ensure stock levels remain high during the uncertainty of Brexit. Adding to the business’ success, an ambitious 20% growth was forecast for 2019 – which has already been exceeded – just five months into the company’s financial year.

“Expanding into new markets has also played a part in the company’s continued growth, with housing associations and facilities management firms trusting us to deliver the goods on time and within budget.” Designer Contracts was recently named in the Business Reporter’s Best of British Campaign, which recognises success stories in British business. The accolade was awarded to just 10 companies in the UK. The company operates across 15 UK regional facilities. As well as flooring the company provides curtains and blinds, furniture and lighting, and operates a showhome and contract-focused interior design services division. In addition, the company is now officially classed as a large business, due to its substantial turnover and number of employees.

To accommodate an increase in volume, the company’s North East region has added an additional 10,000 sq ft to its existing office and warehousing space, almost doubling the size. This is in addition to three brand new regions which were opened in 2018 in Kent, East Anglia and Leeds to meet customer demand. Said md, Peter Kelsey: “As a company we have enjoyed consistent growth over the past few years and this is now driving our plan to double turnover to £80 million and increase staff numbers from 300 to 600 by 2023. “We’ve kept the customer at the forefront of our growth, always ensuring they are key to any decision we make. As concern around the uncertainty of Brexit continues to grow, we’ve seen more and more businesses become risk-averse, dealing with established suppliers with a solid provenance and a level of stockholding that facilitates swift deliveries. The £1 million increase of stock at our central distribution facility only cements our commitment. June 2019 Luxury Interiors Magazine 27

Artistic Project by Ananiev Interiors with BRABBU

An Allusive House in The United States The architectural and design bureau N&G Ananiev Interiors was founded in Russia in 2002 by a family and creative duet - Nadezhda and George Ananyev. The bureau has five employees today engaging in a full cycle of works: architectural design, construction, design and project management. They can work in any style from art deco to mid-century, but always in their own way, following the logic of space and the wishes of the customer. They claim that the strength of their work is the ability to create “very individual tailoring”. In 2018, they opened their own gallery of vintage and designer NG Gallery items. This was their first project in USA and they were excited to share this experience and the outcomes. Nadezhda And George met the owners of this property ten years ago- a couple with four children. The family has russian origins and visits their homeland from time to time, but now they decided to reinvent the house they bought in 1980s-1990s near New York and make it their permanent address. The owners imagined this house in bright and unusual colors: the result was an amazing interior in vintage style with contemporary furniture. Everything was built having in mind the main idea of “visual impression and magnificent appeal for the eyes”. It was important to make a statement with expressive walls through bright wallpapers, combine artistic and remarkablefurniture and also outstanding and even provocative pieces of art. June 2019 Luxury Interiors Magazine 31

Artistic Project by Ananiev Interiors with BRABBU Speaking of planning - the first floor gathers singular public area, which is a suite of rooms closed in a circle. On the second floor - a private area. There is one room for each child and a separate outhouse for the guests. The walls remained in the same place - the Ananievs did not move them, but completely cleaned the “stuffing”, leaving only the doors, as the designers found them really beautiful and in conformity with the concept. The “music lounge” has an amazing merge of bright colors and a playful composition of vintage to modern furniture. One of the main entertainers are mustard-yellow MAYA Armchairs from BRABBU, an intense addition to this living room design. This velvet accent chair has the perfect combination of sensual and delicate forms and due to its fierce color can invoke long and comfort conversations. The main living room also highlights the walls with beautiful wallpapers from Casamance, while the painting by Ilya Kabakov presents a serene nostalgic scenery in a nature-themed artwork. View from the hall to the “art room”. This room is a true inspiration, as it understands and connects extraordinary color spectrum and fantastic textures to provide a complete sensory experience. Friends and neighbors enter this house like into a museum. And one must admit, it’s a fair resemblance!

Interior design student’s top tips for a dementia friendly home A 21-year-old interior design student from Liverpool is using her skills to help people who have been diagnosed with dementia. Hannah Martin, who is in her final year of an Interior Design degree at The University of Huddersfield, was inspired after working on her final year project about designing dementia friendly spaces and seeing a family member struggle with the disease. Dementia is an umbrella term for a number of progressive conditions that affect the brain, which include Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia. It can affect a person at any age and there are more than 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK. This is set to rise to over one million by 2021. Hannah is on a placement year at award-winning technical interior design company Kettle Design in Heswall and is now helping to advise clients on how to make a home dementia friendly. She will join the company full time when she graduates this summer. Hannah said: “My final year project has focused all around creating dementia friendly spaces in the home. As part of my research, I’ve visited a number of dementia care homes, talked to nurses and also spent time with dementia patients and their families. “The disease can progress rapidly and make walking difficult for patients, who may even have to use a wheelchair. So something as familiar as a home setting can become a bewildering and frightening place. It can also become a huge hazard for them if it has not been designed well. That’s why it’s so important to rethink the space to ensure that it is as comfortable as possible for them and also their families and carers. I wanted to use my interior design skills to design a dementia friendly space to help other people in their homes to make their life easier. There are big structural changes such as installing a lift, adding disability access ramps, putting rails around the house and making a disabled bathroom. But there are lots of little clever interior design solutions that can help too, from considering what colours are used in the home to affect their mood to avoiding dark surfaces on the floor which can look like a hole to someone with dementia. People with dementia are the same people they were before they developed the condition with the same hearts. It’s just their minds aren’t completely there anymore. We need to do more to help them.” www.kettledesign.co.uk

spaces. Contrasting walls and floors, tables and chairs, even sets of plates and bowls, ensures that everything is noticeable and recognisable as their eyesight and visibility decreases. Contrasting also helps people with dementia to become aware of their surroundings and know where to go. Contrast the colour of light switches with the wall, so they can be easily seen. You can also use contrasting colours for furniture but avoid stripes. Be careful with flooring Having one overall flooring surface is crucial in designing a dementia friendly interior. People with dementia are easily confused and distressed. Having one floor surface means they do not get muddled and think they are tripping or stepping on something they shouldn’t. A straight clean passageway through a space is important. Dark coloured floors should always be avoided as dark surfaces on a floor or kitchen top can resemble a hole. Avoid shiny floors as they can look wet, blue floors can look like water while green floors can be confused for grassy surfaces. Keeping a natural coloured surface such as wooden floor is perfect. Warm lighting Lighting determines a space and the time of day, and having bright warm lights can create a safe and warm environment. People with dementia often become confused about what time of day it is so keeping a space bright – using brighter lightbulbs and dimmer switches - throughout the day is crucial to keeping them active and awake. By contrast, dark spaces can make them think it’s night time and make them sleepy. Check that curtains and blinds are not blocking any natural light from a room. Consider signage Signs are important to make people aware of different areas within a space. Try labelling doors and walls to help guide the person through a space and remind them of where they are. Have bold, effective signs and make sure they are at eye-level height. You can also stick pictures on the front of cupboards to remind the person what is inside – for example, a picture of cutlery on the cutlery drawer, a picture of clothes on the door of a wardrobe. Beware of mirrors Mirrors can be upsetting to a person with dementia as they may not recognise the person in the reflection as being themselves. Clear materials, mirrors and reflective surfaces can also be mistaken as not being there so can be a hazard. It may be best to remove them completely.

Here are Hannah’s tips for a dementia friendly home: Think about colour Try and ensure that colours are pleasing to the eye as colours can have a big impact on the mood of someone with dementia. Reds are usually associated with danger, but for a dementia patient, red is stimulating and can be effectively used in an activity space to keep them motivated and mentally active. Blues, greens and violet tones are calming tones that are also aesthetically pleasing. They are good to use in a bedroom. Yellow tones are bright, warm and happy colours and suited to a kitchen or living room. Embrace contrasts Colours need to contract to ensure visibility within June 2019 Luxury Interiors Magazine 33
