International Women in Engineering Day: Challenging Bias and Inspiring New Generations

Women’s Engineering Society’s (WES) International Women in Engineering Day, took place on June 23rd, is dedicated to celebrating the extraordinary work that women in engineering do.

As the only platform of its kind, it gives women in engineering a voice, raising awareness of the stark shortage of women in the industry, with statistics showing there are only 16.5% female engineers in the UK.

Multidisciplinary firm adi Group is one of the engineering businesses making great strides in advocating for more inclusivity in the sector, employing a number of talented women in engineering roles and striving to build a more balanced workforce.

Sharing her experience, Process Engineer Caitlin Briggs, who joined adi Group in 2023 as a graduate, discusses the challenges she has faced.

“I’ve been really lucky with my experience in my first job. Everyone at adi Group has been so welcoming and really respectful. However, one of the problems that does rear its head quite a lot when working with external companies is people overlooking my position and not valuing my contributions, downright making it very apparent that they don’t want to work directly with me because I’m a female.

I’ve had people talk to me like I’m a child or call me a little girl. Of course, I’m quite young as well, which makes things more complicated.”

Shedding light on another vital issue, Melissa Britchford, Electrical Supervisor at adi Group, commented:

“When you’re a woman in

engineering, everyone knows you. It doesn’t matter whether you do a good or a bad job, everyone knows your name. When there’s 100 men and just one woman, everyone’s going to remember the woman’s name. So, if you do something wrong, everyone will know about it. It means you have to be careful with what you do and how you portray yourself, because you’re always going to be remembered.”

Giving her advice to other women who are just starting out in engineering, Caitlin adds: “Don’t be afraid to ask questions or voice your opinions. It can be a little bit intimidating sometimes, especially when you’re sitting in a big room filled with people. But speaking up is vital for your learning and development.”

It takes a female engineer to inspire others, and adi Group has successfully onboarded a number of skilled and dedicated recruits – both as apprentices and as full-time employees. But the Group is keen for this figure to increase further.

Inflation fails to stem manufacturing skills drive according to new training report

Skills remain a key priority for manufacturers, with a report out today revealing that training budgets have not been hit by rising inflation.

86% of firms questioned in the annual In-Comm Training Barometer said that their spending intentions have remained unchanged, with more than three quarters investing in new technology to boost productivity - an 8% rise on last year’s findings.

The survey, which features the views of 113 bosses, also reveals that 61% are planning to take on an apprentice over the next twelve months, with 84% taking this decision to develop future engineering skills.

There has been plenty of debate about a disjointed national training picture that isn’t aligned for industrial needs, and this is clear from the report.

The vast majority (72%) believe that there isn’t enough national Government support for training, with 44% wanting better funding for apprenticeships and 39% to boost upskilling.

Reshoring – failing before it starts?

Last year, the In-Comm Training Barometer reported that just 28% of manufacturers had enjoyed reshoring success and, despite a campaign to promote the virtues of bringing work home, this figure has decreased to just

18% in 2024.

Nearly half continue to state that they don’t have the skills they need to make reshoring happen, which poses the question ‘what we can do to change this?’.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) – not in the training game yet

The impact of AI on skills doesn’t appear to be having a big impact on the companies surveyed in the barometer.

Just 6% of firms admit to embracing Artificial Intelligence to boost their skills. Whilst supply chains and backoffice processes seem to be the main early adopters, there is still some way to go to educate businesses on how it can be used to develop workforces and support upskilling.

To download the full report, please visit www.in-comm.co.uk or follow the company across its social media channels.

I’ve been really lucky with my experience in my first job. Everyone at adi Group has been so welcoming and really respectful.

Increasing use of projected signs

Improving safety in workplaces across the

UK

The adoption of projected safety signage by companies across the UK is helping to increase workplace safety, according to experts Projected Image.

Leading companies are increasingly choosing to replace traditional painted and printed signs and floor markings, with safety signage projected onto surfaces using bright LED projector technology that is harder to ignore. That’s according to Projected Image, one of the UK’s leading projected sign companies, who’ve been working with major manufacturers including CocaCola, Mercedes Benz and BAE Systems.

“We can all become a little blind to safety signs, but that’s far less likely when they are projected directly onto surfaces around us with consistently clear and colourful light” says Ian Spoors, Managing Director of Projected Image.

‘Sign blindness’ describes the tendency of people to overlook or ignore traditional signs, particularly if they are familiar with them. It can be particularly common in warehouses and factories, especially in busy areas without clear lines of sight for pedestrians and vehicles.

According to the Health & Safety Executive, 135 people were killed in

work-related accidents in 2022/23, close to the all-time low but up from 123 the previous year. Of these, 49 deaths were caused by someone being struck by a forklift or other moving vehicle or object.

Projected Image is working with an increasing number of manufacturers and logistics operations who are reporting improvements in sign adherence and a reduction in potential accidents.

“Maintaining health and safety is a real challenge for businesses. Forklifts and heavy footfall can soon damage or obscure floor signage in particular, but projected signs remain as bright and eye-catching as the day they are installed” adds Ian.

Projected signage uses LED projectors to shine vivid health and safety signs onto almost any surface. The image is provided by a glass optical filter called a gobo, which can be customised to display any safety signage required. Newcastle-based Projected Image have been involved in projection technology for several decades but have seen significant growth in its popularity as LED projectors have become much more affordable in recent years.

“As well as the health and safety benefits, there is also now a significant cost benefit as projected signs provide

low maintenance use for up to 50,000 hours. We’re increasingly asked to provide units throughout warehouses and factories as the safety benefits and savings are compelling” states Ian.

Projected Image reports that whilst larger businesses were first to embrace projected signs, the technology is increasingly being adopted by smaller businesses due to the falling costs and improved safety.

“Health and safety is one of the biggest concerns for many businesses as employers aim to keep staff safe and avoid the disruption and costs which accidents incur. More and more companies are identifying that projected safety signs are the long-term, low maintenance solution for a safer workspace” concludes Ian.

Projected Image is the UK’s only dedicated provider of both the LED projectors and the custom-made gobo used within them. The compact and low-energy LED projectors can be installed by qualified electricians in any commercial or industrial environment.

Overcoming the challenges of inline thickness measurement

UK

Errors associated with real world thickness measurement are not always obvious, but can combine to create significantly large errors.

What is important when selecting a suitable thickness measurement system from a supplier is to understand the combined realworld errors that can occur when using a non-contact system and how these errors can be eliminated or compensated for. While many suppliers state on their datasheets that the measurement system meets a certain resolution and linearity, in the real world, this performance is affected by a number of environmental influences. Errors associated with real world thickness measurement are not always obvious, but can combine to create significantly large errors.

So how do our systems solve the challenges of inline thickness measurement?

Two of the big challenges, alignment and synchronisation, are taken care of when purchasing a system from Micro-Epsilon. Knowing the overall gap or distance between the two sensors allows the calculation of thickness to be made. To establish this value, we first need to calibrate the system. A certified gauge block is positioned in the measuring path. This known thickness combined with the readings from the sensor above and below the target equal the overall measurement gap. Our systems will periodically return to the

Specialist Equipment & Tools

calibration position to check for changes and readjust values accordingly. Once the gap is confirmed and stored, the system can then be moved onto the target to be measured. The thickness of the material will now be the known gap, the sum of the individual measurements from the upper and lower sensor.

Thermal compensation

A typical system solution is a traversing C-frame measuring strip metal thickness for crown, wedge and edge drop on a decoiling line prior to slitting. Calibration checks against the certified gauge block are performed at regular intervals to avoid inaccuracies that may be caused by changes in the mechanical frame, for example, due to temperature.

Thermal compensation in an O-frame system works slightly differently. The gap between the sensors is key to accurate thickness measurement. Even in an O-frame configuration the mounting frame can expand and contract with temperature changes. Typically, the upper frame will move further than the lower frame, heat rises and so the reference for the gap between the sensors can vary, the consequence being that the system reports a thickness change even though the real thickness has not changed.

Thermally stable system

The second element is to measure the gap change between the main frame, which holds the sensors as this invar frame. This is achieved by using two Micro-Epsilon capacitive sensors, themselves extremely accurate and thermally stable. When the main frame expands or contracts, we can measure this change on the gap between both the top and bottom frame and

compensate the effect into the thickness calculation.

Optical sensors

Three optical sensor technologies are available for integration into the measurement systems. Single point laser triangulation sensors offer a relatively low cost entry into full thickness measurement capability. Confocal sensors provide the highest precision available, especially on shiny surfaces, whilst the laser line technology is the most commonly used due to its excellent combination of high precision and large measuring ranges.

Advantages over X-ray and isotopic systems

The more traditional method of thickness measurement in the metals industry has been the use of Isotopic or X-ray gauges but these can have

LEFT: Micro-Epsilon systems can be installed between rolling stands to provide continuous thickness profile measurements across and along the length of the material being produced.

limitations when it comes to handling, ongoing support and operation. As we use optical measurement techniques, we are generally not restricted on the material type we can measure. Our measurements are made against a certified gauge block and we do not have to recalibrate for different material types.

Total system accuracy

Each individual sensor has its own measurement accuracy and therefore in order to obtain the best performance for the ‘system’ we need to understand the measurement behaviour of the individual sensors and combine them. This is achieved in the systems department through use of a known target and highly precise reference gauge, which is moved through the measurement range of the sensor. The values of the sensors are recorded and the combined readings stored into a new linearisation algorithm, which is used by the systems software to calculate the true thickness reading.

Injection Moulding & Plastics

Manufacturing bespoke filters in the UK with BEC Group

Plastic injection moulders BEC Group take us through what manufacturing hundreds of thousands of bespoke plastic filters each year looks like at their Hampshire based facility.

Producing filters for any industry can be a difficult business; particularly the smallest or most intricate. At BEC Group everything from complex AdBlue filters for the automotive industry to tiny biomedical filters are made. The end-to-end process of design, tooling, and moulding is all carried out at one specialised site.

Whilst blow moulding or compression moulding can also be used to produce similar filters, they lack the precision that injection moulding brings to manufacturing. This is key to producing complicated geometries and details to function effectively and meet stringent filtration requirements.

Injection moulding by nature is a costeffective way of manufacturing filters at high volumes, producing identical mouldings quickly and at a low cost per part. Despite a high initial outlay in producing steel tooling, payback times can be incredibly short when filters are mass produced.

The process of producing a mesh filter in plastic begins at BEC by loading a filter mesh onto a metal core. A steel mould tool closes around the mesh,

molten plastic is injected into the tool and around the mesh, encapsulating it in a plastic moulding to create a support frame for the filter.

The support frames are commonly made from nylon, polypropylene, or polyester due to their durability and chemical stability when filtering water, oil, or air. Typically, the mesh of the filter is made from nylon, but stainless steel and bespoke mesh media is also made. Dependent upon the application and particulate size requiring filteringmesh hole sizes can range from 10 micron to 2000 micron. These plastic encapsulated filtration devices are shipped around the globe, from Europe to the USA.

Close working relationships between the BEC design team and their customers allow for a culture of innovation and communication. “We work with our customers to give them exactly what they want. A collaborative design process means we can produce a bespoke solution for unique problems. We’re here to help.” Paul Holland, Design & Innovations Manager at BEC Group. The research and development team are frequently challenged to produce effective filters, at affordable prices, in tough environments.

ISO 9001:2015 certification demonstrates BEC’s dedication to outstanding customer service and

providing consistently high-quality filters to customers. Extensive work in the automotive industry reflects their ability to keep to tight deadlines and strict quality requirements.

“BEC Group have been manufacturing two bespoke plastic filters for us for over 15 years. Initially producing tens of thousands of filters a year. BEC has been flexible and adaptable as the product became after-market, ensuring we could get parts in massively reduced quantities. A good example of a supplier who listens and is customer-focussed. BEC are a reliable and trusted supplier I would highly recommend.” Ian Holloway, IMI Precision Engineering.

Which marketing works best for manufacturing and engineering?

In a competitive world, marketing is a tool which many companies in manufacturing and engineering use. But, which types of marketing are most effective?

Sarah West, award-winning Chartered Marketer and founder of Full Mix Marketing, shares her experience:

Digital marketing

Though not always critical, digital marketing is important as most customers will visit a company’s website when considering what they provide.

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) can help elevate a business in search results, as can online advertising (PPC). However, before investing, it’s best to understand the number of businesses actually searching!

Content marketing

Blogs, guides, opinion pieces and videos can quickly raise profile.

Case studies and testimonials build trust and trade magazines and websites are often looking for news stories. LinkedIn can help reach decision-makers in the businesses you’d like to work with.

Direct marketing

For many firms, their ideal customers are easy to identify. Data can be sourced to create a comprehensive list of businesses to target. Email campaigns can promote products or services and share useful content, whilst receiving a physical brochure often has a greater impact than many might imagine!

Offline marketing

Industry connections are crucial and can be grown through marketing. Trade shows remain a highly effective way to meet the clients you want to work with. An after-show strategy to follow up contacts is essential.

Creating Clockwork Productivity: How AZ Pneumatica Achieved 80% Efficiency with Automation & Robots

Forget manual labour and misplaced parts! AZ Pneumatica, a leading Italian manufacturer of pneumatic valves and cylinders, has undergone a robotic revolution. This transformation, achieved through a two-phase collaboration with Kardex, boasts an impressive 80% increase in picking speed and a near-elimination of picking errors (a 90% reduction!).

in

Demand

Imagine juggling over 60,000 components, all whizzing through a complex manufacturing process for worldwide distribution. That was the reality for AZ Pneumatica. As demand soared, managing this intricate operation became a logistical nightmare. The company needed a way to streamline production and distribution fast.

Enter the Kardex Automation & Robotic solution

The answer came in the form of a strategic partnership with Kardex,

spanning over two decades. Together, they devised a two-phase plan to automate AZ Pneumatica’s processes:

Phase 1: The Efficiency Boost (2021): This phase saw the deployment of a high-tech squad – 2 VBM Kardex Miniload-in-a-box and 4 VLM Kardex Shuttles. These automated systems not only ramped up daily order processing but also slashed human error rates.

Phase 2: The Space Squeeze (2023): With efficiency under control, the focus shifted to maximising space. A new team of automated solutions arrived – 1 VBM Kardex Miniload-in-abox and 2 VLM Kardex Shuttles. These systems optimised production areas by reclaiming space previously occupied by semi-finished product storage. But that’s not all! Four Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) joined the fray, automating the transportation of goods between different floors of the facility.

More Than Just Speed

The benefits of this automation and robotic takeover extend far beyond

lightning-fast picking. AZ Pneumatica has also achieved:

Reclaimed Space: The space previously used for storage can now be dedicated to production activities. Plus, maximising even more by using wasted overhead space.

Empowered Workforce: By automating repetitive tasks, employees can focus on more strategic and valueadding production roles.

Minimised Mistakes: The automated system significantly reduces the risk of human error in picking and handling.

A Collaboration for the Future

The success story of AZ Pneumatica and Kardex showcases the transformative power of automation. By embracing full automation and robotics, AZ Pneumatica has not only conquered their production challenges but also positioned themselves for a future of operational excellence.

Global lubricants manufacturer chooses new Borger pump

A new jet-mixing pump system has significantly reduced capital, installation, maintenance and energy costs at Moove, the leading global lubricants manufacturer and distributor, in the UK.

For a closed-top 50m³ tank used in the manufacturing process of quality lubricating, engine, hydraulic and gear oils, Moove wanted to trial a set-up that would not only be better economically, but also provide more redundancy.

Ian Lowe, Moove’s Manufacturing General Manager, explained; “A motor failure on a blender could mean as much as four days impact on production, so it was important for us to take the opportunity to prove a different technology.”

‘A better option’

He added: “The performance of our existing paddle mixers has been good, but Borger were recommended as a company that would work with us to provide a better option; one that could be easily replicated.”

The team at Moove drew up a logic for Borger to examine, outlining their objectives, which ultimately resulted in a pump (plus two nozzles), for a 3-bar application with a flow-rate of up to 60m3/hr. To meet the space requirement at the Gravesend site in Kent, Borger also provided the system as a skid-mounted unit, working closely with Moove to supply a customised control panel with a specially written program.

At Moove, Borger carried out a full site test, running different configurations to determine the best operating modes.

“The fact that Borger were able to deliver a complete, all-in-one package was a real bonus,” continued Ian.

“It was also a big advantage to go to Borger for a site test, running different configurations to determine the best operating modes for us. This clearly worked very well, because apart from one very minor tweak, we haven’t had to make any changes since the pump was installed.

The fact that Borger were able to deliver a complete, all-in-one package was a real bonus.

- Ian Lowe

‘So simple to look after’

“With a 9kW motor (compared to 12kW for the paddle mixers), we are automatically saving on energy, but one of the other main benefits is that the Borger equipment is so simple to look after. There’s easy access to the pump-head, and no special tools required. Retrofit to an existing tank is also very straightforward.

“We’re very pleased with solutions provided by Borger that allowed us to achieve the goals of our project.”

Interview: Joshua Western

Manufacturing, Production and Engineering Magazine interviews Joshua Western CEO and co-founder of Space Forge.

Vision and Inspiration:

What inspired you to start Space Forge, and how did your experiences at the UK Space Agency and Thales Alenia Space shape your vision for the company?

Space Forge was founded in 2018, by myself and my Co-Founder, Andrew Bacon, to save our home planet - we both worked in the space industry at the time and recognised the huge climate potential of in-space manufacturing and the need for reliable return from space to make this work. Space Forge is developing the world’s first fully returnable and relaunchable satellite platform, to unlock the benefits of space for manufacturing and experimentation at scale.

Technology and Innovation:

Can you explain the unique advantages of manufacturing semiconductors in space compared to Earth, and how does the ForgeStar microfactory enable these benefits?

There is huge market potential for in-space manufacturing. 2020 saw $1.8bn of microgravity research and experimentation take place.
- Joshua Western

There is huge market potential for in-space manufacturing. 2020 saw $1.8bn of microgravity research and experimentation take place. As Space Forge we have identified multi billion markets for several material classes - but demand is currently not being met due to no dedicated platform, no soft return and a heavy reliance on the International Space Station. That’s why we came up with a dedicated solution, the ForgeStar.

The key to improving the desired outputs from our semiconductors is to improve the quality of the base

materials. Unfortunately, we’ve reached the limit of the materials we can make on Earth, so it’s time to manufacture in space. We are an advanced materials manufacturer making the key component of semiconductors, crystals, using the world’s first returnable, reusable and scalable factory in space. With microgravity, a natural vacuum, and extreme temperature capabilities, we manufacture materials that can’t be made on Earth.

The benefits of space are threefold - the unique in-space environment, featuring microgravity, high purity vacuum, and

Our key focus in the shortterm is on the manufacturing of semiconductor materials as this is such a crucial part of the market.
- Joshua Western

near absolute zero conditions, facilitates the production of materials unattainable on Earth with significantly increased efficiency and a longer lifespan. This environment offers advantages such as contamination-free vacuum, improved crystal formation and rapid curing at near absolute zero temperatures.

Challenges and Solutions:

What are some of the biggest challenges Space Forge has faced and how have you and your team overcome them?

I don’t want to take away from any one challenge or solution. Everything we’ve overcome at Space Forge has been done as a team. It’s our culture to celebrate our failures. We even have a “Failure of the Month” award at Space Forge. It’s self-nominated and the team vote on the months’ failures so that the lessons learned from them are shared. We proudly display them all in the hallway you have to walk through to get to the manufacturing area. Some are a bit tongue-in-cheek, like when the coffee machine was taken out of order by a team member, others hint at our speed to invent - like when a team member burnt through a fireproof blanket with an experimental payload. I hasten to add in a VERY controlled environment.

Otherwise I think the biggest challenge was grouping together after the loss of our inaugural mission. It’s heartwrenching to see all that work and human effort literally get toasted out of the sky. As a company we took the next day off to grieve. The day after that, we got back to work and started on ForgeStar-1, a mission 10x bigger than the one we lost. Sheer determination and persistence is often all I can point to in our ability to overcome the challenges we see.

Advantages:

How can harnessing the value of space bring benefits to us on earth?

Our focus is on producing materials and products which offer game-changing levels of performance and efficiency in power-hungry infrastructure and systems - reducing the environmental impact of production on earth to unlock new value and innovation. Research demonstrates that manufacturing these materials in space could reduce CO2 emissions by 75% in high value infrastructure, from EV charging stations to cloud computing data centres. Our goal for Space Forge is for every kilogram of CO2 we create, to prevent another 20,000kg from ever being made.

In practice: if we swapped the semiconductors in a 5G tower for ones manufactured using space-made crystals – improving the efficiency, lowering energy usage and running costs – we could reduce the tower’s carbon emissions by about 75 per cent. In 2022 the network cost about £1.4bn a year to run – space-made semiconductors could potentially reduce that figure down to about £400m per year.

Market and Impact:

How do you foresee the in-space manufacturing industry evolving over the next decade, and what role do you envision Space Forge playing in this future?

Our key focus in the short-term is on the manufacturing of semiconductor materials as this is such a crucial part of the market. As a private sector company, we believe we help to shape

this market – in-space manufacturing is still so novel, so there’s not much of a precedent.

Currently most chips are produced in Taiwan and if the Covid pandemic showed us nothing else, we’ve seen how fragile global supply chains are. During the harshest lockdowns, semiconductor supplies quickly dried up. There’s a strong case for creating a consistent and secure sovereign supply chain free from interference elsewhere.

The US is already working on its own supply chain strategy, having invested $108bn into its chip industry, alongside the European Union who’ve put €47bn into theirs. This is why our key focus is on establishing a secure supply chain for all chip consumers that can start to take advantage of space made components.

Collaboration and Partnerships:

Can you discuss any key partnerships or collaborations Space Forge has formed, and how these relationships have contributed to the company’s growth and technological advancements?

A key partnership we announced last year was with Northrop Grumman. This is an agreement to explore future space-based manufacturing focused on semiconductor development that can enhance the value of multiple groundto-space operations.

As part of this collaboration, Northrop Grumman will provide us with technical advice, microelectronics training workshops, collaborative design review, and material testing and characterisation.

Interview

The collaboration aligns with the visionary goals outlined in the Defence and Security Industrial Strategy (DSIS) of March 2021.

This is important in the fact that it brings together the expertise and innovation of both the UK and US space industries, and we believe it will be a game-changer in unlocking the tremendous potential of space-based manufacturing

I recently spoke at the Ignite Space Conference, which was a great experience. The energy and excitement from attendees reaffirmed the huge potential within the UK space industry, and I’m excited to see the next stages of collaborations and innovations that will emerge from this community.

Leadership and Culture:

How would you describe your leadership style, and what kind of company culture are you cultivating at Space Forge to drive innovation and success?

Together with my Co-Founder and CTO, Andrew Bacon, we have built a team that really is at the top of their industry - we have people from 23 different countries working with us, and we somehow convinced them all to give up some incredible homes to come work in a very rainy UK.

I think I’d have to ask my team to describe my style to me. Before Space Forge I hadn’t managed a team full-time before, just doing the occasional project management.

Most people can point to events when they learn how NOT to manage a team

We have some very exciting contract announcements in the not too distant future and we are incredibly excited and working towards our maiden ForgeStar-1 voyage.
- Joshua Western

and so I applied myself to trying to do the opposite where those situations arise at Space Forge.

Astronaut Encounters:

You’ve met 12 astronauts. Can you share any memorable interactions or advice from them that has influenced your approach to space technology and business?

Probably the most memorable interaction was having a chat with Tim Peake while he was onboard the ISS during a conference - I was very new to the industry and seeing Earth behind him in the Cupola module made me gasp. I asked what his favourite button was - he responded it was the rubbish chute. Otherwise it was meeting Chris Hadfield - I don’t think there’s a better astronaut out there for describing the fragility of our home planet and it reminds us of what we seek to protect at Space Forge.

Memorabilia and Motivation:

You keep a piece of kapton from the Apollo 11 Command Module on your desk. What significance does this artefact hold for you?

Honestly it’s more the dis-belief that such things are not only available for purchase - but also affordable. As significant as landing on the moon is, day-to-day it simply reminds me of how commercial the sector has become and within touching distance of so many people it now is.

Future Goals and Milestones:

What are the next major milestones for Space Forge, and what are your long-term goals for the company?

We have some very exciting contract announcements in the not too distant future and we are incredibly excited and working towards our maiden ForgeStar-1 voyage. We have already been successful in securing revenue for our upcoming missions - so expect more detail on that soon too.

In terms of long-term goals, we are currently growing our US team at Space Forge Inc., A recent Semiconductor Industry Association study projects that the U.S. domestic semiconductor manufacturing capacity will triple from 2022 to 2032, reflecting a 203% growth—the largest projected percentage increase in the world during this period. Space Forge Inc. is focused on above shore manufacturing for onshore needs; aiming to be at the forefront of this growth - addressing national priorities and boosting the U.S. economy.

delapena Takes Flight:

Revolutionizing Aerospace Repair with Innovative Honing Tools

delapena, a leading name in the honing industry, is making waves in the aerospace sector with their revolutionary Tandem Alignment Honing Tools. These ingenious tools are rewriting the rules of aircraft landing gear maintenance, offering a faster, safer, and more sustainable approach to aircraft repair.

The aerospace sector is increasingly tightening the requirements for components to achieve lighter weight and greater performance from end products – higher power densities, more precise control, tighter sealing, less noise, and vibration.

Traditionally, maintaining the intricate and often difficult-to-reach

components of aircraft involved timeconsuming and expensive disassembly of key parts like landing gear and engine cylinders. This not only disrupted operations but also drove up maintenance costs significantly.

delapena’ s Tandem Alignment Honing Tools are a gamechanger. These innovative tools allow for In-Situ honing of critical twin bores, eliminating the need for disassembly. This translates to faster turnaround times, reduced costs, enhanced safety through perfect alignment and extended component life, and more sustainable practices through reduced waste.

How they work

The tool body is made such that its length matches the centre distance of the two ‘in-line’ bores. One end of the tool is fitted with abrasive stones and the other with nylon guides.

When the tool is inserted into the bores the nylon guides are expanded to pilot the tool in one bore while the honing stones are expanded to increase the diameter of the bore to be honed. When the first bore has been honed to the correct size the tool is removed and inserted from the opposite end

so that the nylon guides are piloted in the honed bore while the stones increase the diameter of the second bore. If access is restricted and the tool cannot be inserted from each end of the tandem bore, then the position of the honing stones and nylon guides are reversed in the tool after the first bore has been honed.

The impact of delapena’ s tools extend far beyond mere convenience. They represent a paradigm shift in how aircraft landing gear components are maintained, prioritizing efficiency, safety, and sustainability. As air traffic continues to grow, these tools play a vital role in ensuring the smooth operation and longevity of our global fleet.

delapena’ s Tandem Alignment Honing Tools are a testament to their commitment to innovation, precision, and a deep understanding of the aerospace industry’s needs.

Belzona SF6-FIX Leak Solution Launch

Belzona proudly announces the launch of its revolutionary SF6 Leak Solution.

What is Sulphur Hexafluoride (SF6)?

Sulphur hexafluoride or SF6 is a synthetic gas comprised of one sulphur and six fluoride atoms. It is commonly used in medium and high voltage electrical equipment to insulate live electrical parts and to switch the flow of electrical current on and off. This same equipment, crucial for the efficient functioning of power grids, also plays a pivotal role in connecting the generation and storage of renewable energy.

Why is Stopping SF6 Leaks So Important?

Despite its utility, SF6 is incredibly detrimental to the planet. With a warming potential that is a staggering 23,500 times higher than carbon dioxide (CO2) , SF₆ is the most potent greenhouse gas. This means that even in minute quantities, SF6 has a disproportionately significant impact on global warming. Worryingly, the Environmental Protection Agency notes that leak detection surveys show approximately 10 percent of circuit breaker populations leak and, 85% of these leaks are releasing enough of this dangerous gas to be considered significant. Frequent leaks of such a potent greenhouse gas have become a serious contributing factor to global warming.

The Online Leak Solution in Action

This electric switch gear flange within a Power Distribution Substation was leaking 70kg of SF6 per month. In addition to being devastating for the environment, such leaks incur substantial costs, as local authorities can issue hefty fines. Leveraging a strategic combination of expertly applied specialist materials, including reinforcement sheets alongside Belzona’s advanced resin and coatings, Belzona successfully stemmed the leak in just one day, without the need to degas the system.

Six months into service, the solution was deemed successful. The leak has been reduced to an undetectable level, resulting in a monumental environmental and financial saving. This triumphant application has paved the way for the solution’s expansion to other substations, offering a practical and efficient means to propel the global power distribution industry towards a more sustainable future.

How to Repair and Protect Hydro Equipment with Polymeric Technology

Given the expected and necessary growth of the hydropower industry over the upcoming decades, it could be argued that polymeric technology has a valuable role to play in supporting this growth. Applications, such as the one identified below, demonstrate how assets that would otherwise be decommissioned or sent to landfill can be given a new lease of life thanks to a combination of epoxy repair composites.

Hydropower Capacity Set to Double by 2050

According to the International Energy Association’s (IEA) ‘Net Zero by 2050’ Roadmap (revised version 2021), the hydropower industry needs to be the ‘third largest energy source in the electricity mix by 2050.’ – this involves a doubling of hydropower capacity by this date. This is in order to keep the planet aligned with a net zero by 2050 pathway.

To support this colossal scale-up of hydropower capacity, polymeric technology has an important part to play in terms of its role within hydropower plant maintenance. In order to keep a growing fleet of hydro plants running as efficiently as possible, systems such as epoxy repair composites and highperformance coatings can be deployed to repair and protect damaged assets.

Not only does this technology enable asset owners to make significant financial savings, but this circular economic business model is also extremely beneficial for the planet. It mitigates the carbon footprint that would otherwise be incurred through the process of replacing a damaged asset and sending it to landfill. In turn, by helping asset owners to avoid asset replacement, it could be argued that polymeric technology has an important part to play in supporting the transition to net zero by 2050.

Rebuilding Sealing Faces of Hydro Equipment

A common application area where polymeric technology can be deployed in hydropower plants is dam or lock gates. These gates are highly susceptible to substantial erosion at their sealing surfaces. Factors such as pressure, water flow and consistent friction contribute to compromised seals over time. Over the years, authorised Belzona Distributor, Protecmo, has conducted a series of applications designed to repair and protect the sealing faces of hydro equipment for the long term.

For rebuilding the damaged substrate, Protecmo specify the 2-part epoxy paste, Belzona 1111 (Super Metal).

LEFT: Lock gate repaired and protected with combination of epoxy pastes

TOP LEFT: Polymeric technology supports seismic growth of hydropower industry

BOTTOM LEFT: Polymeric technology prolongs the lifespan of hydro equipment

As this system is specially designed for metal repair and resurfacing, it is perfectly optimised to rebuild damaged metal substrates in dam or lock gates. A solvent-free epoxy resin reinforced with silicon steel alloy, this composite repair material is corrosion-resistant, and also resists a wide range of chemicals. Thanks to its cold-curing properties, this successfully mitigates the need for hot work. The ceramic polymer, Belzona 1311 (Ceramic R-Metal), is also specified for metal rebuilding, but for situations where additional erosion resistance is required.

In order to provide long-term protection to the lock gates, Protecmo specifies the metal repair composite, Belzona 1321 (Ceramic S-Metal). This system provides excellent corrosion-erosion resistance for applications up to 60°C (140°F). This solvent-free epoxy coating also has outstanding chemical resistance and will bond to almost any rigid surface. Belzona 1331 is also used to protect assets against the effects of corrosionerosion for temperatures up to 50°C (122°F). In addition, as Belzona 1331 can be spray applied, this makes it a practical choice for larger applications.

Polymeric Technology

Supports the Transition to Net Zero

Considering the expected growth of the hydropower industry, it is critical that vital assets are safeguarded against damage and degradation for the long term. Polymeric technology has an important role to play in facilitating this. By repairing and protecting a damaged asset instead of replacing it, epoxy repair composites and highperformance coatings are key drivers in supporting the transition to net zero.

Three Easy Ways to Clean/ Protect Sensitive Electronics

Electronics are everywhere. Unfortunately, they can be susceptible to moisture, corrosion, and ESD (electrostatic discharge) damage. When the need arises to clean and protect these devices, Cortec® offers three easy ways to do so without harming sensitive components.

Quick Touchup of Electronics

Corwipe® 500 is a handy wipe for light cleaning of electronics. In addition to removing small amounts of grease, oil, and dust that may have built up on the component during processing or storage, the Corwipe® 500 contains corrosion inhibitors to protect against flash rust from the moisture of the wipe. Furthermore, antistatic properties reduce the risk of ESD damage during cleaning. Corwipe® 500 is a good option for the following (powered-off) components:

• PCBs

• Terminal blocks

• Communications equipment

• Data storage devices

• Various instrumentation

At the manufacturing plant, Corwipe® 500 is perfect for last-minute touchup on new components before they go into a package. At the assembly plant, workers may occasionally want to

grab a Corwipe® 500 to lightly clean components before putting them together. Corwipe® 500 is even a great product to have in stock for maintenance workers doing electronic or electrical repairs around the facility.

Deeper Cleaning, Restoration, and Protection

When it comes to deeper cleaning and protection of electronics, ElectriCorr™ VpCI®-238 and 239 are good tools to call up to the task. These two aerosols act like cleaning agents because of their moisture-displacing and penetrating film qualities. If sprayed on a surface and allowed to dry, they leave behind a thin film that inhibits corrosion. ElectriCorr™ VpCI®-238 is preferred for protection in indoor, enclosed environments, while ElectriCorr™ VpCI®-239 works better for outdoor, vented environments. Both should only be applied after equipment has been powered-off.

Manufacturers can promote better aesthetics and reliability by using ElectriCorr™ to clean away grime or flux on PCBs and other electronics before assembly and/or shipping. ElectriCorr™ can also be very useful for electronic maintenance. In one case, a company that specialized in servicing marine electronics (e.g., radar, sounders, plotters) ran into corrosion

due to the damp, high-chloride environment. ElectriCorr™ VpCI®238 was so effective in cleaning away corrosion from the circuit boards that the company was able to reinstall them for service. A month later, they checked the circuit boards and could see a noticeable protective coating on them but no further corrosion. Such cleaning and protection are also valuable for mothballing projects where electricals are prepared for extended storage.

Clean, Protect, Preserve Sensitive Electronics

Whether an electronic needs a quick touchup before shipment or requires deep cleaning and protection for full restoration to onboard ship use, it is important to have technologies that clean and protect quickly, easily, and effectively without harming sensitive electronics.

Contact Cortec® to learn more about whether Corwipe® 500 or ElectriCorr™ VpCI®-238/239 are right for your electronics cleaning and preservation jobs.

Precision Tooling Academy helps Brandauer win SME Employer Skills Champion title

The UK’s first Precision Tooling Academy has been recognised by a national charity dedicated to closing skills gaps in UK engineering and manufacturing.

Metal pressings and tooling specialist Brandauer was named as the SME Employer Skills Champion of the Year by Enginuity for the way it has joined forces with In-Comm Training to bring the technical upskilling facility in the West Midlands to fruition.

The judges were impressed by the Birmingham company’s role in addressing a critical shortage of toolmakers by creating a specialist 20week course that ensures the transfer of essential skills from an aging workforce to a younger generation.

Close to £1m has been jointly invested by the two strategic partners to create a commercial toolroom in the training provider’s facility in Aldridge, which is producing complex tooling, as well as acting as a professional training ground for the toolmakers and designers of the future.

The Precision Tooling Academy aims to reverse this trend by offering companies access to professional toolmaking courses, upskilling opportunities for qualified engineers looking to diversify their skills and a Level

6 Tool Process Design Apprenticeship to develop the next generation of talent.

Leaders from across the UK’s engineering and manufacturing sector gathered at the 10th annual Enginuity Skills Awards in June to celebrate the brightest and best in UK engineering and manufacturing talent and the organisations championing skills development.

Brandauer, who was joined on stage by KMF Precision Sheet Metal, JLR and Siemens Digital Industries, was also

recognised by judges for the way it has reshaped its apprenticeship programme to ensure 15% of the workforce are apprentices and its involvement in the Manufacturing Assembly Network’s Design & Make Challenge.

UVAC warns of threat to manufacturing skills gap posed by Apprenticeship Levy reform

A new report by the University Vocational Awards Council (UVAC) has today warned that drastic reform or the abolishment of the government’s Apprenticeship Levy scheme will have a hugely detrimental impact on the skills gap across the manufacturing sector.

Cuts to funding of higher and degree apprenticeships, that are so critical to training core sectors and occupations such as manufacturing to a senior level, will lead to a decline in skilled professionals.

The warnings come from UVAC, which is the voice for over 90 universities that deliver higher and degree apprenticeships and has just

produced a white paper setting out the future of the apprenticeship levy and what a future government should consider to maintain the volume and quality of delivery of higher-level skills.

The levy was first introduced in 2017 and is funded by a 0.5% compulsory contribution by employers with payroll costs of over £3m. It was met with some concerns especially from levy-paying organisations, regarded as another form of business taxation and has recently come under heavy scrutiny.

One possible reform UVAC has recommended in its new report is the ring fencing of public sector levy payments. This would ensure that employers, such as the NHS, would

have far greater control over where it spends its payments, regardless of whether restrictions were introduced for employers in the private sector.

Other proposed reforms to the levy opposed by UVAC could include a graduate ban which would prevent funding being spent on young people and adults pursuing a manufacturing-based higher or degree apprenticeship.

The report on the future of the Apprenticeship Levy is freely available to view online on www.uvac.ac.uk.
