Sacramento Kings Becomes First Pro Sports Franchise To Accept Bitcoin and should take off, for a lot of reasons,” 32-year-old computer programmer Jason Steele told us after buying a phone case with bitcoin. “I want wider adoption. I want more businesses to use it.” The Kings will accept bitcoins through an online service provided by Atlanta, Georgiabased startup BitPay. A BitPay spokesperson tells us that the service is now used by about 20,000 merchants, with about 1,000 signing up each week. In addition to the Kings, this includes the online blogging service WordPress and internet gaming outfit Zynga.
Sacramento Kings Crowned First Pro Sports Team to Accept Bitcoin SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The Sacramento Kings are set to become the first major professional sports franchise to accept Bitcoin virtual currency for ticket and merchandise purchases. The Sacramento Kings say they’ve become the first team in professional sports to accept bitcoin, the digital currency that’s rapidly moving into mainstream commerce. According to the NBA franchise, it’s now accepting bitcoin payments inside a team retail store in Sacramento, California, and on March 1, it will let fans use the digital currency to purchase both tickets and merchandise on its website.
The move comes just a week after Overstock.com became the first major online retailer to embrace bitcoin. Though many who hold bitcoin today see it primarily as an investment — the value keeps going up along with its popularity — more and more businesses, both online and off, are beginning to accept the digital currency, and at least a portion of the still small bitcoin community is spending its virtual money on the most common of goods and services, from patio furniture to burritos. Overstock tells us that during its first 26 hours accepting bitcoin payments, customers spent about $126,000 worth of the digital currency. “It’s a concept that could take off,

But as this Kings show, digital isn’t merely a means of buying stuff in the online world. By holding your phone up to internetconnected tablets in various stores and restaurants, you can also make purchases here in the real world. A Subway sandwich shop in Allentown, Pennsylvania is accepting bitcoins, as it is a CalMex joint in Tokyo. Bitcoin users buy digital money and load it onto a virtual wallet. Unlike government-issued money, the value of Bitcoin fluctuates rapidly. At one point Thursday, the value of one Bitcoin was worth nearly $850. Kings owner Vivek Ranadive said the new payment method is part of his model for “NBA 3.0, which focuses on investments in technology, globalization and deep community partnerships.” |

Los Diamantes, ¿Siguen Siendo Los Mejores Amigos De Las Mujeres? By Brian Milligan

Marc Anthony Sues ClubCreate Over 1.3 Million Loan It’s always intriguing to invest in a startup. But in Marc Anthony’s case, certain ventures don’t always go as planned. This week, he filed a suit against the online music company he helped fund, for $1.3 million! The New York Daily News reports that Marc “lent” ClubCreate Inc. over a million dollars to help get it off the ground. He even let them use his image in a series of online advertising campaigns. But ClubCreate (which specializes in online recording tools) hasn’t upheld their part of the bargain. Anthony claims the company CEO is irresponsible and has used the funds as his “personal piggy bank.” But here’s the interesting part; Marc doesn’t want ClubCreate shut down. Instead, he wants his cash back and to appoint of himself as the company’s executive director. It’ll be very interesting to hear what a judge has to say about that. | JANUARY 2014

California Supreme Court Rules An Illegal Immigrant Can Get His Law License
Sergio Garcia Hopes Law License Ruling Is A ‘Beacon Of Hope’ For Immigrants
program that allows many young people to avoid deportation. “This is a bright new day in California history and bodes well for the future,” the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles said The California Supreme Court granted a license in a statement. Thursday to Sergio Garcia, 36, in a unanimous The court sided with state officials in the case, which pitted them against the White House decision. Garcia, who attended law school and passed over a 1996 federal law that bars people who are the state bar exam while working in a grocery in the U.S. illegally from receiving professional store and on farms, can begin practicing law licenses from government agencies or with the use of public money, unless state lawmakers immediately. vote otherwise. Garcia said he hoped the decision would serve as a “beacon of hope” to others in the same situation. He plans to be a personal injury attorney in his hometown of Chico. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A man who illegally came to the United States two decades ago said he hopes a court ruling granting him a law license will open doors to millions of other immigrants in the same situation.
of San Francisco, said the court made clear the only reason it granted Garcia’s request is that California recently approved a law that specifically authorizes the state to give law licenses to immigrants who are here illegally. The new law, inspired by Garcia’s situation, took effect Wednesday. It was unclear how many people would qualify to practice law under the ruling and whether it would influence other states. Legislatures and governors in more conservative states such as Alabama and Arizona are likely to be less receptive to the idea.
“This is a bright new day in California history and bodes well for the future,” the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles said in a statement.
It’s the latest in a string of legal and legislative victories for people who are in the country without permission. Other successes include laws granting driver’s licenses in some states and the creation of Bill Hing, a law professor at the University JANUARY 2014
He “can hang up a shingle and be his own company,” said Hing, who represented the state bar association in the case. “Once he does that, a client can retain him as a lawyer.” But some questions remained
unresolved, such as whether Garcia can appear in federal court or in other states. Federal law makes it illegal for law firms to hire him. Vol. 2 No. 1

of the state Supreme Court justices appeared reluctant to grant Garcia the license under current state and federal law, saying they were prohibited from doing so unless the Legislature acted.
Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye, who wrote the opinion, said the new state law removed any barrier to Garcia’s quest for a license. And no other federal statute “purports to preclude a state from granting a license to practice law to an undocumented immigrant,” CantilSakauye wrote.
Garcia worked in the fields and at a grocery store before attending community college. He then became a paralegal, went to law school and passed the bar exam on his first try. His effort to get licensed was supported by state bar officials and California’s attorney general, who argued that citizenship is not a requirement to receive a California law license.
Garcia, 36, arrived in the U.S. as a teenager to pick almonds with his father, who was a permanent legal resident. His father filed a petition in 1994 seeking an immigration visa for his son. It was accepted in 1995, but because of the backlog of visa applications from people from Mexico, Garcia has never received a visa number.
Two other similar cases are pending in Florida and New York, and the Obama administration has made it clear it will oppose bar entry to immigrants unless each state passes its own laws allowing the practice, Hing said.
He applied for citizenship in 1994 and is still working toward that goal. The U.S. Department of Justice argued that Garcia was barred from receiving his law license because the court’s entire budget comes from the public treasury, a violation of the federal mandate that no public money be used to grant licenses to people who are in the country without permission.
California Attorney General Kamala Harris supported Garcia’s petition and applauded the ruling. Nick Pacilio, a spokesman for Harris, said California’s success “has hinged on the hard work and self-sufficiency of immigrants like Sergio.”
Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel Tenney, who argued the case, did not immediately return a call seeking comment. The Obama administration’s position in the case came as a surprise to some, since the White House has shielded from deportation many people who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children, provided they also graduated from high school, kept a clean criminal record and met other conditions. Garcia was too old to qualify for the program, which was geared to people under 31 as of June 2012.
Four states — Colorado, Minnesota, Oregon and New Jersey — last year offered in-state college tuition to residents who are here illegally, joining California and 10 others.
California and nine other states last year agreed to grant drivers licenses to people in the country illegally, bringing the total to 13 states, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Nevada and Maryland began taking applications this week. |

Improve Your Search Engine Ranking With New Content! In the good old days (last year - a week ago) the choices to get ranking on Google were paying for AdWords ads or spending marketing dollars on so called SEO services or experts or both. For many small businesses the return on investment wasn’t worth it. With Google’s current emphasis on “new content” and specifically “new video content”, small businesses with small marketing budgets can now compete on the “New Content” playing field. Have you noticed how YouTube videos appear in search engine results more and more every day? Do you also notice how videos will rank higher than text posts about the same subject? Ever since Google purchased YouTube back in 2006, the trend toward YouTube videos appearing in Google search results has been a constant. Consider this, if you post to your website’s integrated blog once a week with forwarding to the social media sites where you have a presence, your new content is multiplied with links back to your website where you control content, presentation and priority. With a small one time invest in equipment and a regular, small, time investment you can noticeably increase your search engine ranking on any budget. Knowing that text is passed between Google and YouTube in the process leading to search results provides several opportunities to increase search engine ranking. Starting with video file names and continuing to descriptions, titles, tags and most recently video captioning. A little “new video” can go a long way to improving your search engine ranking and your internet visibility.
Sandra Cisneros : “MacArthur Genius” 18 Geniuses The MacArthur Fellows Program, nicknamed the “Genius Grant,” is given to U.S. citizens and residents that “show exceptional merit and promise of continued creative work.” In other words, these individuals are awarded funds not based on their past merits but because they are likely to contribute to the world in a positive way in the future. Currently, 18 Hispanics have received the coveted grant including writer Sandra Cisneros (pictured), cubanborn anthropologist Ruth Behar, and playwright Luis Alfaro. Check out the full list of these ‘MacArturos’ and their impressive resumes.
Greatest Hitter Of All Time Yes, Ted Williams was Hispanic. Williams’ mother was Mexican, but truth be told he wasn’t very vocal about his heritage. As the Baseball Hall Of Fame best put it: “[Williams’] 521 Home Runs place him 4th on the all time list. There are many who insist that Ted Williams ranks with Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb as the greatest hitters who ever
lived. While Ted’s life-time figures are taught by only a few, there is no telling to what heights those figures would have reached had he not given nearly 5 full years of his baseball career to the US Marines.” A legendary baseball player and a U.S. Marine... need we say more?
