How to quit a job you hate

Imagine waking up miserable because you must drive or commute to a job you just do not like. Ugh, it is even more dreadful leaving your house, your pet, and your family because you just do not like your job (or boss or co-workers).

You do know that you can always quit, right? You only live once and being in a job that you do not like is not the way to spend your life.

There are ways to quit gracefully and go to a job you genuinely enjoy, or better yet, your own business to exploit your entrepreneur skills.

BEFORE YOU QUIT

• Make sure that there is absolutely nothing you can do to make things better. Try to really get to the source of the problem (or the source of why you dislike your job), before taking any drastic action.

• Before quitting, update your documents and resume.

• Try to find a job before leaving your current one.

• Update your list of people that can recommend you.

• Make certain you have enough money saved up for about 6 months.

TELLING YOUR BOSS

that you are leaving can be a hard and awkward thing to do. It is important and professional to give your boss your two weeks’ notice.

• It is important and professional to give your boss your two weeks’ notice.

• Always communicate with your boss in person, do not quit by text or email.

• You do not have to tell your boss every detail you hated about your job. Keep it neutral and clean.

• Offer your help in the transition of them getting a person to fill your job.

• Say goodbye to your co-workers, be neutral and leave with the feeling that if you cross paths in the future, you can be happy to see them again.

Remember to be professional, to be calm and neutral while quitting and unless there was some form of harassment or discrimination, leave with the satisfaction that you learned a lesson while working there.
