5th Avenue clearly labels itself as the ‘no.1 indie experience’ above the entrance door but you will find that the music is much more diverse on the dance-floor. The nightclub is located on the corner of Princess Street. Ladies get in free on Saturdays before 10.30pm with a flyer or NUS-card and gents get a free drink included with admission – everyone is happy. Admission and drink offers range from free to £6 throughout the week: cheap as chips.

FAC251 – The Factory is a new indie rock and roll club and live venue open six nights a week, and located on the corner of Princess Street and Charles Street. The club was previously the HQ for Factory Records, built by Tony Wilson, paid for by New Order, and broken by The Happy Mondays. Wednesdays are recommended with a £1 entry flyer before midnight, drinks, and shots – a toxic combination for 24 Hour Party People. Mani (formerly bassist from The Stones Roses and currently in Primal Scream) will be DJ-ing on the second floor, mixing Manchester classics with indie and rock and roll tunes. One word: Madchester.

deeper pockets? Club Coliseum is situated on Peter Street. The weekend involves student nights with fancy dress themes plus weekly promotions (ladies in for free and cheap student entry). Saturday’s ‘beaüt’ night consists of R&B, dance, Ibiza anthems and funky house brought to you by the producers of ‘Greek’ at Entourage (in The Printworks – another good spot). It’s £5 to get in with NUS admission and if you’re lucky you might even manage to get on the guestlist.

K2 Karaoke Nightclub is the first of its kind in Manchester’s China town on George Street. On Saturday’s ‘seductive’ nights, clubbers are entered into a raffle upon entrance before midnight for the chance to win a bottle of Moët champagne. Ladies get free admission before eleven and £5 after. Boasting 31 private karaoke soundproof rooms on the two floors, with cocktails and cuisine available to be ordered from your very own private waitress, it’s hard not to enjoy yourself! Clampdown Records 9-11 Paton Street Clampdown Records has possibly the biggest collection of Rock, Punk, Indie, Funk, Soul and Jazz vinyl’s around. With rare and collectable must-see’s from The Smiths to Led Zeppelin, this place is definitely worth a visit. Be warned though – once inside it’s difficult to drag yourself away; there’s far too many hours of rummaging fun in there.

Night and Day Cafe 26 Oldham Street Night and Day Café is not only a great place to grab a sandwich and read the papers, it’s also one of Manchester’s most legendary music venues, housing some of the city’s best gigs to date. The intimate atmosphere and fantastic sound make it well worth visiting, whether it’s to see unknown acts at the regular open mic night or your new favourite band yet to hit the big time.

Tummy Rumbles

Bacchanalia 15-17 Chapel Walks (off King St) M2 1HN Price Range: ££/£££

(one if you’re on a date or your parents are in town) Bacchanalia is nestled in the heart of the city centre, a stone’s throw from St Peter’s Square and Market Street. As well as being a cocktail bar, Bacchanalia offers quality British food at reasonable prices. If the reasonable prices don’t appeal, Bacchanalia also has some great special offers such as 2-4-1 cocktails between 5pm and 8pm Mon-Fri and a brilliant early evening deal (2 courses for £11.95 or 3 courses for £14.95). Bacchanalia is cosy and inviting, from the intimate booths in the bar downstairs to the relaxed, simple decor of the upstairs restaurant.

This makes it a perfect venue for any occasion; from a family meal to a first date. Our starters were Wild Mushroom Pate (£4.50) and Rabbit and Olive Terrine wrapped in prosciutto ham (£5.20). The light, mousse-like pate was intensely flavoured, with sweet caramelised onion bringing the flavours together nicely. The terrine was the standout of the whole meal; meaty, moist and gamey with a lovely olive tang. To follow, we had Pork Wellington with wild mushroom sauce (£13.95) and Confit Duck Leg (£12.95). The duck, cooked in its own juices, was rich and delicious, served with a simply stunning side

Finally, a couple of Bacchanalia’s famous cocktails, a Summer Berries Mojito (£7.20) and a Caipiriha (£6.90). These were sweetly refreshing, but were nothing compared to the summery, refreshing vodka and lemon sorbet we sampled, along with a scoop of buttery homemade vanilla ice-cream. The Wellington, however, suffered at the hands of one erroneous ingredient. The pork was beautifully cooked and the pastry flaky and filling, but a stodgy sausage-meat stuffing unbalanced the flavours. Luckily, the potent, velvety mushroom sauce – as well as the value-for-money portion size - saved the day.

Wasabi, The Pr intworks

Wasabi is the Printworks’ hidden gem, nestled in opposite the Odeon cinema.

set menu, where you get up to ten sushi dishes and a bowl of miso soup for £12.95.

This funky Japanese sushi restaurant is the perfect place for a social meal with friends, either before or after a night out (Wasabi is open until 11.30pm on Friday and Saturday nights). For a lunchtime treat, Wasabi also offers sushi dishes ‘off the belt’ for just £1 each (12pm-3pm).

Of the sushi dishes my guest and I shared, our favourites were the spicy tuna gunkan, California rolls, and the hot, delicious battered butterfly prawns. We also tried and enjoyed all the nigiri sushi dishes – clam, eel, mackerel, prawn, salmon – which simply consisted of pieces of fresh, tasty fish on a bed of rice.

Wasabi offers exceptional value for money, with a number of set menus. I opted for Set Menu B; you get three sushi dishes from the conveyor belt and one noodle-based main meal for just £7.95. My guest went for the slightly more ambitious Wasabi A

The sushi dishes were all beautifully presented in perfect little parcels. Nothing on the menu was too intimidating for sushi beginners like us, and there are no flavours too alien to the western palette.

After all that sushi, I thought I wouldn’t be able to fit in a main meal. However, the tender meat and delicious, moreish sauce of the Tokyo Roast Pork Teppen Yaki Soba Noodles meant I soon found a little more room.

Ellie Goulding at Academy 2

Ellie Goulding is not at all what she seems. If you thought she was yet another sweet and innocent blonde chirping out throwaway pop/electro songs, see her live and get ready to think again.

Whatever the reason, there was atmosphere in abundance as Ellie and her band launched into their first track, ‘Lights’. Lighting and venue deserve a mention here too, as the high ceiling of the Academy and the ambient, sparkling light show made it really feel like a euphoric festival performance. Expecting a more mellow pop experience from Ellie, I have to admit I was completely blown away by the set from that point on. To start with, Goulding’s voice is not at all what it sounds on the album. In person, her vocals are gutsy, passionate and much stronger than I expected.

Some reviewers have criticised the flawlessness of Ellie’s set, saying that it lacks rawness. Whilst I wouldn’t go so far as to say she

An indication of Goulding’s untapped potential in other genres came when she performed a cover of the Midlake song ‘Roscoe’, the rawness and vulnerability of which transformed my perception of her yet again. As for her on-stage presence, Goulding is a refreshingly unselfconscious performer. The childlike innocence of her initial appearance – once you’ve been suitably impressed by her voice – re-emerges in her movements on stage. Another thing I liked about Ellie on stage was that there was no concept to her, no pretension. She seemed refreshingly natural, normal and sincere.

I caught her at the Manchester Academy 2, where there was a palpable sense of excitement as Ellie came on stage. This either came from a genuine fan base for the artist – as she is clearly targeted at a student audience – or from the BBC Sound of 2010 accolade making her somewhat of a spectacle.

was over-rehearsed, the characterlessness of her breakout single Starry-Eyed says a great deal about the way she is marketed. The squeaks and beeps of this point Ellie towards the hipster student electro market (think Little Boots, La Roux) when in fact, she’s much better stripped back and folksy.

You shouldn’t always allow yourself to be swept away with the hype surrounding a breakout artist. In this case though, after I’ve allowed her to prove herself, I can comfortably say that Ellie Goulding is very special and she is worth getting excited about (provided you see her live, of course.) The Ting Ting’s The Ting Ting’s hit the music scene back in 2007 and have since had a whirlwind three years of gigging, playing on every continent across the world, and bringing their eclectic sound to new ears.

Large caught up with Katie from the band. She’s tired, had back to back interviews all day and suffered the extent of the tube strikes in London but as soon as she hears a Manchester accent she immediately brightens up and starts talking a million miles a second. The Ting Ting’s have a new single out soon ‘Hands’, so we find out what’s been happening to the dynamic duo. How’s life for Jules and Katie now? Slightly less busy at the moment, but it feels like the calm before the storm. We’ve had two manic years, it’s been so full on but with the new single out now I expect it will go back to being crazy.

Do you spend much time in Manchester? I had two weeks here at Christmas which should have been nice, but I was in hospital with exhaustion but at least I had my mum with me and I

I was going to ask about Islington Mill, aside from there, where are you favourite hangouts in Manchester? We lived there and we hung out with all the other artists in the mill so we rarely left, we just used to have loads of parties there dancing about between ourselves! We’d often just have so much fun we wouldn’t make the short trip from Salford to Manchester, it was just nice to be around other creative and inspirational people. Where did you play your first gigs? We actually played three gigs in our living room which got really talked about and loads of press coverage and we played an intimate gig at The Rovers Return on Chapel Street which was cool. I prefer the intimate gigs. After that we played the BBC introducing stage at Glastonbury. Your new album is described as having a different sound to ‘We Started Nothing’, how was the production process different?

It’s still my voice, I still sing the same and we approached it in the same way, but we’re different people two years later so that changed things. We started listening to people like Nancy Sinatra and Fleetwood Mac and that comes through on the album. We were making the album in Berlin and Mike Pickering (ex M People and The Ting Ting’s A & R guy) said he wouldn’t come to Berlin because it was too cold, so we were left to do it ourselves so we could experiment more, but we kept it song based. What’s your favourite place you’ve played a gig? Glastonbury’s been great for us because we played there first on the BBC introducing stage to 75

people, then in 2009 we played to thousands, so personally it was amazing to see how we’ve developed in two years. We also played a gig at this place called Club West Germany in Berlin which is an old doctors surgery which is a strange place but fun place to play and another gig we played in Jakarta and we had no idea the crowd would know our songs but they were so sweet singing away. Can we expect a tour in the coming months? After Christmas we’ll be touring. We’ve got ‘Hands’ out soon and then we’re releasing another track off the album, we’re doing it the old fashioned way, 2 tracks then the album early 2011 then the tour so lots of rehearsing in between. Paul Van Dyk

Playing all over the world must be mind-blowing. Are there any favourite venues you’ve played at or anywhere you would like to play? I wouldn’t say I have a favourite venue. I have a very clear idea about the general sound and music of what I want to play and everything else is down to the connection with the audience so it’s always different. You’re known as the pioneer of trance and electronic dance music and over the years we’ve heard many collaborations in addition to your own produced material; is being a live DJ and live production where you see your future? I’m a musician and my favourite music is electronic music and this is what I have done pretty much the majority of my working life and I hope I can do it until I retire!

What top tip would you offer to any Large readers looking to break into the DJ scene? One of the main things is that you really know what you like and what you want to do. At the end of the day you’re in front of an audience and you have to convince them that what you do actually means something and has a purpose. If you have doubts then it will come across. Growing up in East Berlin you had to listen secretly to European music. How different do you think your career would have been had social networking sites such as MySpace been available to you? Well obviously it would have been a completely different picture. We’ve seen substantial growth in communication between the artist and the fans. It’s good for an artist to have a direct response from the audience. What other unfulfilled ambitions do you have? I’m working on my next big artist album, that’s my next goal; to deliver something that actually has substance and that I feel happy with. Otherwise it’s always the small things and I think that might be part of the secret of why I’m still around. I take every single gig very seriously so I don’t have super-duper goals of ‘I must do this or that’. For me one of the main ambitions is to deliver as close as possible perfect set when I play, regardless of how big or small the audience is... I’m never easy on myself! L

Congratulations on your latest release “Gatecrasher Anthems - Paul Van Dyk”. Gatecreasher was an institution in Sheffield, what Manchester clubs have you played and what were your experiences? I played at the Hacienda during the 90’s and recently played at Sankeys which was fun as they refused to let me in because I was wearing trainers! I turned around to go and the promoter came running out after me panicking! I’m back in Manchester on 8th October at the Warehouse Project.

The Arts

Theatre comes into its own in Manchester and unless you were smoking behind the bike sheds during English, you will have heard of Alan Bennett, whose new piece, ‘The Habit of Art’ promises to impress Manchester audiences in October. The Agatha Christie murder mystery ‘Witness for the Prosecution’ keeps us guessing in November and try swapping Christmas Classics for modern classics in December and catch ‘Zack’ at the Royal Exchange.

October is the month for culture in Manchester given the festivals of literature, food, science, new media, emerging music, contemporary crafts and beer all taking place in 31 days. Encompassing many of these subjects and more is The Manchester Weekender (1st – 3rd October) that is definitely worth a peek.

The guys at Manchester’s favourite ethical treasure box Junk Clothing are masters of sustainable fashion and can turn almost anything into a fabulously on-trend piece of beauty.

Embellish! Take a plain garment and jazz it up by adding or changing buttons, applying appliqué or clip on handmade rosettes or a fancy trim.

Their shop based in the Northern Quarter, is kitted out with weird and wonderful recycled fittings, all adorned with reworked vintage clothing and materials that they have helped save from landfills by using just a little bit of imagination and some nimble green fingertips.

Rework the hem Often vintage dresses can look dated, but by sewing some elastic round the hem and pulling it higher, a rouched tulip skirt effect can be created. Or, take a long dress and cut it to make a gorgeous mini.

To help revive the crumpled and forgotten about’s hidden at the back of your wardrobe (yes, we all have them!) Junk have shared some of their top tips that’ll have you saving your pennies and looking fabulous in no time:

Create your own prints If you’re a budding illustrator or if you’ve just found an image that you really like then pop it onto iron-on paper by using a standard printer and apply your favourite prints to anything from jackets to shirts and dresses.

Tie-Dye The Hippies favourite and massively on-trend. Just add dye,elastic bands and salt to your old T-shirts or dresses and tie dye them to create that 60’s bohemian vibe.

Distress your old denim Distressed denim is still big and it’s easy to do it yourself. You can slash, burn, bleach or even take a cheese grater to your denim jeans/jackets to create that Young Ones look.

Wonderhaus Jewellery From 22nd-24th October, The Great Northern Contemporary Craft Fair will be taking place at Spinningfields, showcasing cutting edge craft from over 150 designer-makers.

One talent you can expect to find there is jewellery maker Julia Roy Williams, former Manchester College student and founder of Wonderhaus Jewellery. Coming from the punk ethos of doing things yourself, Julia makes wonderful contemporary laser cut pieces hand crafted in her studio space at Manchester’s Craft and Design Centre in the Northern Quarter.

For the AW10 season, Julia will be playing with autumnal colours, plum and camel as well as rich, detailed blacks and greys. She is also expanding her use of materials by incorporating wood and leather into her designs.

Although Topshop is often regarded as the highstreet’s Holy Grail, it’s an infuriating misconception that students just wear their catwalk inspired clothes when of course, student style is a muddled mix of old and new trends, drawing on the city’s multitude of vintage boutiques, charity shops and plush independent stores. A mish-mash of styles is ever present amongst the student community; we are seeing old school staples thrown together with current highstreet bestsellers like…

This big autumn/ winter trend will be a strong look for students within Manchester. Manchester is a city recognised for its style, much of which is attributable to its large student population, and it’s those students who aren’t afraid to experiment with colour and texture who have been the inspiration for this fashion segment.

Stick to student nights and look out for drinks deals. For all those who are new to Manchester check out Baa Bar in Fallowfield or Deansgate Locks in the city centre. With shots for only £1, it’s always a good place to start the night.

Check out ‘Student Beans’ or Martin Lewis ‘Money Saving Expert’ for great deals on eating out. You can always find a ‘twofor-one’ offer on there. However, if there are no vouchers that appeal to you, find a restaurant with an early bird menu that is often a lot cheaper.

It is rare but sometimes the student’s union put on free buses to take you to and from venues, so always check in at the SU to see if there are any set student nights or organised events going on. If bars are beginning to bore you then head to the theatre - it’s not as expensive as you think! You can cut the price of theatre tickets in half just by going to the afternoon matinees instead of the evening show.

When heading to the supermarket for your weekly food shop, look out for offers and group up with a few friends to take advantage of the ‘two-for-one’ deals so you share the price. Remember to stick to the bigger supermarkets as the same items are more expensive in Express or Metro shops. Markets are also good like the Manchester Arndale Market where you can buy fruit and vegetables very cheaply.

Many attractions in Manchester, such as the Museum of Science and Industry and the Manchester Art Gallery are free, so soak up some culture without having to spend a penny.

Getting around If you can’t handle walking to and from uni every day, make sure you invest in a monthly or yearly bus pass. This will save you some serious cash by the end of the year. Not only useful for the daytime, you can also get night buses home after a night out – no money for taxis needed!

A Different Career Path? Graduating can be scary, with all the expectations that go along with it; study and get A levels, university and a degree, then move to London and get a good job for a big firm - it all sounds frighteningly familiar, right?

That’s where I would like to intervene. My name is Johnny Ward and I’m a recent graduate myself. I thought I had my life planned too (or planned for me is perhaps a truer statement) – study finance, move to the capital and become an investment banker, grind out the 60 hour week so I can afford the Ferrari, BUT my life took a different route. I decided that after graduating I wasn’t ready to sell my soul to the city just yet and I wanted to see the world, so I set about doing just that and enrolled onto a TEFL course (teaching English as a foreign language) and booked a one-way ticket to Asia. Four years on, 40 countries in and with work experience in Thailand,

If diving with great white sharks, trekking to Everest base camp and climbing Kilimanjaro sounds more appealing than fighting the struggling job market then I urge you to take the plunge - it could be the best decision you ever make. Would be explorers, now is the time to take the risk. Don’t spend a lifetime waiting for the ‘right’ time to come because it never does. The world is a big and awesome place waiting to be discovered. Working, studying and travelling abroad can help you in a multitude of ways. Compliment your CV with valuable international experience not to mention the fact that you’ll have the most amazing experiences you could ever dream of. In the next edition, I’ll give you a few tips on funding your travels/ backpacking on the cheap and also about opportunities working abroad, so stay tuned!
