Hello Fine Folk Bonfire night, toffee apples, crisp nights, Christmas markets and lights – it’s all here, Manchester in its full wintery glory! There’s so much to see and do in Manchester in these cold months you just have to be brave enough to battle with the great outdoors. It’s been gigs galore in the city this month and Manchester stages are set to be graced by numerous acts in the coming months. We’ve managed to catch Example and Manchester band Hurts in action, plus had a chin-wag with Sunderland’s very own Frankie from Frankie and The Heartstrings (definite ones to watch). Headlined by Athlete and featuring performances from The Travelling Band, Reverend Sound System, Liam Frost and many more, the event attracted 14,000 people over the May Bank Holiday. The categories they are nominated in are: • Best Medium Size Festival • Best Metropolitan Festival • The Grass Roots Festival Award • Family Festival Award The festival was started by four music promoters who wanted to put Manchester music on the map and create an amazing festival. The people of Manchester have fully supported the festival with attendance figures rising each year. Manchester’s Mania for Christmas Markets Without doubt, Manchester Christmas Markets have become one of the most widely recognised events in the city’s events programme. The 2010 markets open on November 18th but in terms of last year’s, an estimated total of 1.3 million people visited, which is truly phenomenal. It is estimated that the 2009 markets had an economic impact of £49.9 million on the city. This figure is derived from the visitor spend on the markets, the tourism influx to the city when the markets arrive. Also the markets increase employment figures with the generation of new jobs, so positivity all round!

In a tourism survey, of visitors to Manchester during the time the markets were on stated that the main reason behind their trip to the city was because of the Christmas markets.

Kuyichi King Street in Manchester, once the favoured spot for all things designer seems to have died a death of late. Thankfully, the illustriously paved street is coming back to life with numerous businesses and restaurants set to open.

Manchester Radio Online Ok, so you may have already heard of Manchester Radio Online, however, the online radio station has just moved into the city centre and taken up residence at the Ducie Bridge pub. The pub acts as a feeder venue for the station, allowing them to showcase the bands that come in for interviews and give emerging talent a stage to play on where they are fully supported and given an opportunity for exposure. There’s a common misconception that internet radio stations are just run by kids from their bedrooms, but this is a station that fully supports emerging musical talent from Manchester and sees an average of 400,000 listeners each month. On its

launch night back in 2007, over 120,000 people tuned in. Being an online radio station, the guys behind the scenes are finding that people seem to be loving Manchester music all across the world. A large chunk of their listenership is from the US, Spain and Australia, with one Mexican school using the station to teach the pupils English. Broadcasting 24/7, the station goes live at 5pm every night with presenters and then the infamous James Stannage takes over the 9pm show, taking calls on topical issues and ranting and raving about the world’s problems. Ramsbottom Farmers’ Market Held on the second Sunday of the month from 10am-4pm, the farmers’ market inside Ramsbottom’s Civic Hall features more than 25 stalls, bringing together farmers and producers from all over the North West. A vast array of local produce is available including jams, breads, home-made fudge, fresh fruit and vegetables, fish, meat, savoury pies and seafood.

The Christmas menu is really budget friendly with their festive three-course meal from just £17.95 per person or you could go for a Christmas buffet for just £9.95 per person.

The Bridge down on Bridge Street is one of Manchester’s best gastro offerings. They have a really homely private function area upstairs (free room hire as well) but you can also eat downstairs in the bar area for a more relaxed kind of Christmas party. Our recommendation is to gather your mates together and head along for a fantastic Christmas themed Sunday lunch. The Bridge is famous for its Sunday roasts so

Obsidian Obsidian is a stunning Christmas venue ideal for any size of party up to 100, where you can fill up in the restaurant then move into the opulent bar area. Where? Dimitri’s is a restaurant I’ve walked past many times, peering through the window into the faces of excited diners, but have to say I’ve never stepped inside – until now. The restaurant has been there for 20 years now, feeding hungry bellies with authentic Greek food at reasonable prices. Just this year the restaurant has expanded into the unit next door (you would never know – it looks like it’s always been that way).

I was pleased to see the bar area packed with drinkers and even diners stood up eating tapas. The place was full on a Thursday night, a good sign in my book! The aromas from the kitchen filled the air and the atmosphere was buzzing from the good range of diners; intimate couples on cosy tables for two mixed with corporate parties of 8. The place had a real essence of authenticity and that home-from-home vibe you only get from independently owned ventures run with passion.

We decided to embrace the Greek way of life and share throughout the meal. Starting with the Calamarakia (£6.95), traditional calamari at its best and cooked exceptionally well, not chewy and a big enough portion to leave you full. Moving onto Mains The kebabs at Dimitri’s are a bit of a speciality so we opted for the Pork, Chicken and Lamb mixed Kebab (£15.95). It’s served with Casablanca rice, salad and a spicy sauce. The rice was really unusual - I’ve never had rice and cous cous mixed together before but it really worked. The heaps of colourful salad made a refreshing change to stodgy potatoes with a meal and the spicy tomato sauce livened the dish up. All the meats were seasoned perfectly and made for a healthy alternative when it comes to dining.

Another recommendation would be the Patatas a La Pobre (£5.35). Everyone knows of patatas bravas but this is potatoes with a twist. Served with sweet peppers, they made a delicious accompaniment to our little tapas feast. Room for anymore? Not really, so we shared a traditional Greek dessert Kalaifi (£3.50), which is rolled pastry strings with an almond and pistachio centre soaked in honey. I wasn’t overly keen but I think it’s because desserts for me means sticky toffee pudding or cheese cake (they do offer a range of desserts along these lines) but it certainly lacked the heaviness of a traditional British pudding.

Tummy Rumbles

To Start The menu is vast, broken down into tapas and more substantial platas dishes. We kicked off in true Greek style with pita breads served with a selection of dips (£7.95 with four dips). The dips were delicious, my favourite being the avocado dip which, rather than being rich and creamy, had a more citrus flavour to it.

Sticking with the sharing idea (something I’m not usually good at!) we tried the Stifado (£6.95) which was beef with red wine and onions. The beef was real melt-in-your mouth quality and the rich sauce was delicately seasoned with cinnamon.

Moving onto Mains I tried the Rack of Lamb with Crushed Potatoes, Spring Onion and Minted Cream Peas with jus (£18.95). The lamb fell off the bone beautifully. The mash and minted peas gave the dish an extra rich flavour and the dish was exactly the right size portion - thoroughly enjoyable.

Where? Based at The Great Northern Warehouse within the Vegasinspired, glamorous setting of Manchester 235, Linen is a stylish restaurant situated away from the gaming area. Imagine a scene from Oceans 11 combined with quality cuisine and service. With magnificent and inviting décor, Linen is one of Manchester’s finest, modern British restaurants. 24

To Start The menu consists of contemporary, yet hearty dishes focussing on fresh fish and meat with flavours to suit all tastes. Wine connoisseurs out there will love the extensive wine list, with all bottles displayed in a boutique walk-in wine cellar. I chose the Sesame Coated Goat’s Cheese & Asparagus with Roquette and balsamic oil (£6.50). The dish was beautifully set with

My guest, being a lover of fish, chose the Sea Bass Asian Broth with Greenlip Mussels and Bok Choi (£15.95). Cooked in a red Thai sauce, it was delightful with the fresh and crisp bok choi. The Sea Bass itself was light and tasty soaking in the Thai flavour without overpowering the natural flavour of the fish. No side order other than bread was required. Room for anymore? Not for me. I was happy with a liqueur coffee (£4.00) but tempted by the choices of dessert cocktails available for more of a liquid style pudding! On the other hand, my guest opted for a classic Vanilla Cheesecake with Cherry and Mint Sauce (£6.00) of which

he summed up “Any New York deli would be very happy with it”. Not one to miss out, I had to sample this myself and it comes highly recommended. The service at Linen is second to none. Passion for offering a quality dining experience exuded from the staff. I would definitely recommend Linen for a special occasion, a romantic meal or feel good start to any evening to enjoy superb cuisine in a fabulous setting. For an even more intense dining experience, choose the chef’s table which offers views into the kitchen and is set away from other diners. The prices reflect the quality yet they there are offers available where you can enjoy two courses for £10 or three courses for £15 Sunday to Friday. Also, movie-goers might want to head to Linen on a Sunday and get two courses, an AMC cinema ticket and a packet of sweets for only £15 – amazing value!

Goings on in the City

Halloween is a Scream at The Printworks If you want a good old fright this Halloween then don’t miss the Manchester Halloween Parade on 31st October. Backed by Manchester City Council, the ‘Manchester Monster Mardi Gras and Zombie Walk’ starts with registration to take part from 4pm in The Printworks Pumpyard. It’s £2 entry with all proceeds going to Christie’s. The organisers are hoping that over 1,500 people will take part, marching through Manchester’s streets in fancy dress. Through to the early hours, The Printworks venues will be transformed into ghoulish haunts catering for all the vampires and zombies in Manchester. The Waterproof People A new exhibition has just opened at the Museum of Science and Industry showing the Jewish link to waterproofing. The Waterproof People shows how the Jewish community became closely linked to the waterproofing trade, supplying most of the UK’s waterproof garments. The exhibition has been put together with the support of the Manchester Jewish Museum and includes stories from people who worked in the trade plus photos giving a fascinating glimpse into a labour-intensive trade that has virtually disappeared from Manchester. By 1903, there were at least 100 waterproof workshops employing thousands of people around the

immigrant districts of Cheetham Hill and Strangeways. Some of these factories survived until the 1990’s but only a handful are still trading. The Jewish community in Manchester can be traced back as far as the 1780s and by the mid-nineteenth century, the Jewish population was concentrated mainly around the Redbank/Cheetham Hill area in the north of Manchester. Many of these families were migrants fleeing persecution in Eastern Europe and Russia.

Christmas Light Switch on

Goings on in the City

There’s no getting away from it; Christmas is here and with the Christmas light switch-on taking place in Manchester on Friday 12th November, it’s going to be lights-a-plenty and Christmas carols pumping out of every shop on Market Street.

It’s set to be a musical feast this year with X-Factor winner Joe McElderry switching the lights on and singing his new single, plus Coronation Street favourites will be there as part of the soaps 50th anniversary, as well as the cast of hit musical We Will Rock You.

Britain’s Got Talent finalist Liam McNally and a raft of other artists will be taking to the stage throughout the evening to keep the crowds entertained. The event will reach its climax in spectacular fashion as the switching on of the all-new Christmas lights will be accompanied by a dramatic firework display, lighting up the city’s sky. Frankie and The Heartstrings You will know them or soon will do, the most hotly tipped band of 2010 is Frankie and The Heartstrings from the mean streets of Sunderland. Large chatted to Frankie boy and found out what it really feels like to play in front of 7,000 people.

How did the band come together Frankie? We are all from Sunderland so met there when I was running a bar. Dave and Mike and I just got chatting and found we had a lot in common and that we weren't particularly impressed with the music scene in Sunderland, nothing appealed to us so we decided to start a band. Mike and Dave had been in bands before but I'd not. You're frequently referred to as the band to watch in 2010. Has this changed the response at your shows? Not really, it works in a different way as I think because of the hype we have to prove everyone wrong. There's been so much hype that we're a 'trendy' band but Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m all about proving who we are to existing fans and also Continued...

to new fans that we're worth watching. It's all about word of mouth and being on the radio has massively helped that.

Do you worry about being overhyped then? Yes, but it's a good thing though. It's crazy that we've become one of the most famous bands from Sunderland. We owe a lot to The Future Heads. We played a gig on Saturday actually and Barry from The Future Heads came along which was cool. I'm not worried about being overhyped because we're confident in our performance. Given the frequency of bands coming out of Sunderland, how do you think that your surroundings have come to colour your music? There's nothing appealing from Sunderland which is why we started. Everyone just thinks music is in London but I think it's changing; it's becoming more of a level playing field. What's the worst thing you've seen written about you? To be honest I'm just grateful people are giving us the time! I'm happy to meet people, give autographs, photos and stuff. There's been no bad press yet! We just keep our feet on the ground. Your live shows are known for being raucous, how do you muster up the energy on stage? 36

We did a gig in Sheffield to 10 people and we tackled it the same way as Reading festival in front of 7000 people. Same show - we give 100% at all our gigs no matter what the crowd size. We don't know any other way of doing it. If a director asked you to do a sound track for a film, who would you want to be asked by and why? Probably not for a film but I'm obsessed at the minute with David Lynch, who does Twin Peaks. I love the stories and themes so we're trying to create a little bit of this atmosphere in our writing. Tell us what the rest of 2010 has in store for you? Well, so far the highlights have been Reading and Leeds festival and playing the NME tent which was so surreal. We've took advantage of every festival we've played and took a tent and camped as I've never been to a festival before. It's mental though as to date we've only released two singles and seeing 7,000 people singing your songs is just amazing. On that note, Large would like to say that Frankie was one of the nicest guys we've interviewed, a lovely chap and readers need to make sure they make time to listen to this band, they are ace! L

Example - Live at The Academy

The London music scene often dominates the charts but Example has brought something new to it. His style of mixing rap, dance and dubstep has resulted in his own definitive style - forward thinking and futuristic. His highest placing song ‘Kick Starts’ managed to chart in the top five, which just shows he’s not just here for the hell of it and working alongside acts such as Professor Green and Calvin Harris pretty much says that he’s here to stay.

you didn’t know the words to the song, it was hard to not bop along regardless. Words flowed into lyrics, lyrics flowed into beats and everything just gelled together harmoniously. It was a real hands in the air, dance-like-maniacs kind of vibe, which resulted in the entire crowd grinning from ear to ear. I doubt it’ll be long before Example is has to move to bigger venues to meet the demand of his passionate fans, so it was a fantastic opportunity to see him in an intimate space. Next time you’re out in a club and you hear a song with an amazing beat and genius lyrics, it’s probably young Elliot Gleave with his funky sounding songs and his welcome fresh take on dance music. London rapper Elliot Gleave (his stage name is based on his initials, geddit?) has packed a fair bit into his 27 years. He's tried his hand at everything from scaffolding to stand-up, landscape gardening to garage MCing, but it seems he’s found his true calling making catchy club bangers.

Supported by new breakthrough act Devlin, Example burst on stage to an already pumped crowd. The audience were a real mixed bag, from teenagers to forty-something’s; he entertained on all levels. The entire room was mesmerised by his up-beat, fun lyrics mixed with intoxicating beats. Even if 38

Hurts – Live at The Ritz

The duo from Manchester aren't your usual band. Their distinctive ‘synth’ sound never fails to get them noticed and in fitting tribute to their Northern roots, they wrote their track ‘Wonderful Life’ at the not-soglamorous Belle Vue Dogs and recorded their album in Longsight, going to show how proud they are of being from Manchester. Hurt’s song ‘Illuminated’ is currently being used on Sky One, fuelling the widespread recognition they are now getting and rightly deserve. The Ritz has always been a unique venue to hold a gig and Hurts took full advantage of that. The mood was set with a simple but bold stage. The crowd waited with baited breath to see what their first song would be and they didn't disappoint. Using their entire repertoire, they worked the crowd in to a mellow mood, mixing each song fluidly whilst indulging in a spot of playful banter between each.(Large reviewed Hurts at their very first gig and it seems the guys have come on massively in terms of stage presence – in a good way, not in an egotistical maniac kind of way!)

Lead singer Theo interacted with the crowd, chatting away and informing everyone how the band formed and how honoured they were for the support they were being given. Jokes flowed, even the one about Kylie Minogue being stuck on the 42 from Fallowfield (they've done a cover of one of her songs and she’s covered Wonderful Life recently – an unlikely but cool cross-over, Large thinks!). Theo was really great at being normal. He made you feel like he was a normal guy who had finally got the credit he deserved (because he is).

The performance had a weird one-man and-his-piano feel to it, with second Hurts member Adam (guitar/piano) being almost two different people in two different time zones, but it just seemed to work. The guys also had an opera singer on stage who stood to the side, not moving an inch the entire night, giving the experience more of an ‘80s feel to it.

The night itself was a mixture of excitement and adoration from the crowd. In my eyes, this has catapulted Hurts as the front runners in major breakthroughs in music. L Words Stuart King.

Sam Gore I seem to have weird luck with neighbours. One of my lowest points in terms of personal dignity came at 3am on a weeknight when I still lived in Leeds, shouting at the man next door on his doorstep because he seemed to think it acceptable etiquette to play the drums with what sounded like his forehead at that time in the morning. I was in the right, but I couldn’t figure out why he looked so frightened and confused, until I walked away and realised I’d had the whole argument with my dressing gown wide open. And often when we’re in, watching them fly over and slap to the concrete like soggy little homesick ghosts. I can’t even begin to understand the thought process behind it, or what we’ve done to deserve it. All I can do is look at my dressing gown and wonder how long it’ll take me to snap again. In the ‘Best New Designer’ category Kirsty Payne, 21 and a graduate in fashion design from the University of Salford beat off stiff competition to scoop the prize.

Held within the beautiful surroundings of St Anne’s Church, Gerardine Hemingway was given a lifetime achievement award for her work as one half of the formidable partnership with her husband Wayne in starting the world-famous fashion brand Red or Dead. The duo started out with stalls on Camden and Kensington Market and established themselves at Afflecks Palace. Gerardine designed, made and sold her first collection from a small space in Kensington Market and within a week of opening

The most common term I hear getting thrown around these days is “I wish I had more time”. It’s fair to say that most people lead fast-paced, busy lives with lots going on, but being busy and being productive are two entirely different matters. The one thing I do know for certain is that no matter who you are and what you do, you do not have more time than the next person. We all have 24 hours per day and once it’s up, it’s up! Therefore it is how you use your time that matters. The most common excuse I hear these days is “I haven’t got the time”. It has almost become an automatic response people just roll off their tongue! I believe that we do have the time for the things that matter in our lives; it just comes down to recognising what those things are and then planning for them properly.

If you have clear goals and clear plans of how to achieve them, then you can plan your time effectively so you don’t run around constantly touting how busy you are! Actually taking time out each day to plan how you spend your time around what is really important can make you up to 10 times more effective. Start by planning each day the night before and factor in what is important first rather than reacting to emergencies all the time. Remember the old adage used in the army: “Proper Planning and Preparation Prevents Poor Performance!”

Day 3 - Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu

Sweat It Up, Work It Out

And so to phase three. Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu is a fusion of the Samurai and Ninja arts Jujutsu and Ninjutsu, incorporating traditional moves not practised in westernised disciplines.

Not without a little trepidation having never tried martial arts and only able to do about three and a half press-ups - I joined the small but friendly group. After warming up, we launched into a series of rolls and flips. The teacher, Adrian, kept it simple for me, but the others were busting out with some impressive moves. Luckily, I held my own when it came to cartwheeling - phew. Moving on, we spent some time learning how to break an

opponent's grip, using weight and balance to gain the upper hand without resorting to brute force. And to finish off, weapons! Only wooden ones, I was relieved and a little disappointed - to hear. As a non-competitive sport, a lot of emphasis is on flow and movements, learning to exploit the opponent's attack. If it sounds scary, it isn't. Adrian and co. were really friendly, took the time to explain things, and went easy on the demos. If you're keen to try a martial art, this class is accessible and varied, with enough Jackie Chan moves to satisfy the biggest karate kid. Do I need antibiotics for my sore throat?

It is likely that all of us will get ill at some point this winter. An infection, such as a sore throat, is a very common problem. In a normal year each of us will have 2 to 4 of these, ranging from sinusitis to bronchitis. The biggest culprit of these infections is the virus, occuring in up to 80% of people and sadly rendering antibiotics useless as they only kill bacteria. Knowing how long symptoms are expected to last can hopefully enable us to manage them more independently. Simple measures such as paracetamol to help with fever and pain, plenty of fluids and rest are the keys to a quick recovery. It may surprise you to know that the average length of illness for a sore throat is 7 days, the common cold 10 days, sinusitis is 2 weeks and an acute cough can last up to 3 weeks, which is often a lot longer than people expect! For smokers, expect a longer duration of illness and more severe symptoms. Even most episodes of tonsillitis are viral, but antibiotics may be needed if there is pus on the

tonsils, fever, tender glands in the neck and importantly, no cough. It is always important to seek medical help if you feel particularly unwell or have underlying health issues, but the majority of these illnesses can be managed safely at home. This month, I decided to escape Manchester for the sunnier shores of the Greek Islands although, it wasn’t so sunny. In fact, it was rather rainy with occasional outbursts of thunder and lightning which I did not prepare for. Anyone who knows me well also understands my serious thunder phobia which leaves me cowering under a table at the first sounds of a loud crash – not a good holiday look I think you will agree. All those hours spend trawling Manchester’s shops for the perfect bikini and the watercress soup diet I endured in the weeks leading up to my trip was just a waste of time. Trying to make the best of a bad situation, I decided to explore the island we were staying on, only to be greeted at every turn by what can only be described as the ‘Brit’s Abroad Brigade’. One event I have managed to catch this month was the Best of Manchester Awards which were amazing. It was seriously like a Manchester wedding (apt that it was held in a church!) but anyone who was anyone was there from the Manchester scene.
