Well, what a corker of a year 2010 was! I think most readers will be asking themselves where the year actually went. For me it was mostly spent sat in front of a laptop writing up all the amazing things happening in Manchester.

Highlights for 2010 had to be the Food and Drink festival (as always), the launch of our website www.largemanchester.com, World Cup fever hitting Manchester with the fake beach and TV screens down in Castlefield and not to forget the whopping amount of new venue openings this year has seen – there are just too many to mention! 2011 looks to be as exciting as ever and I’m sure a lot of you will have plans for NYE but if not we’ve got a little round up of what’s happening in town. In January, thoughts turn to health and we’ve also got a few tips on how to shape up in less conventional ways that don’t involve pounding a treadmill. Manchester Bobbies clampdown on Christmas criminals Police across Manchester arrested 171 burglars and seized more than £128,000 in cash from suspected criminals in just one week in December in the latest clampdown on pesky offenders.

Epernay, who already own a bar in the city centre, are managing the ground floor bar that will stock more than 100 types of bubbly, allowing you to start your holiday in style. The tower was once the centre of operations in the North but was closed when air traffic control was passed over to Scotland. As well as champagne, the bar also sells oysters and airport bosses are hopeful it will become a popular site for proposals. L

The once under-performing school that was formally the Ducie High School was named Best Academy at both the Education Investor and the Education Business Awards.

The feat is even more impressive when you consider that there are over 70 different languages spoken in the school, mainly due to the large intake of children from some of the world’s most troubled areas. The school was one of the worst in the country ten years ago with only 13% of pupils getting 5 GCSE’s at grade C or above - that figure has now risen dramatically and it is now 60%. L

The police are urging partygoers to keep safe during New Year’s Eve. Greater Manchester Police have launched their ‘Take Control’ campaign to help those who have been a victim of rape or sexual assault to not suffer in silence.

A new tattoo parlour has just opened in Manchester at The Triangle, Studio IX. The owner of the studio, Liam Marland, celebrated the launch by having the Triangle Shopping Centre logo tattooed on his knee!

Harry’s work documents classic images of the original British rock ‘n’ rollers from Cliff Richard and Billy Fury to Dusty Springfield, Lonnie Donegan and Adam Faith – he captured the definitive

images of virtually every leading British musician and many visiting American artists. The exhibition comprises of over 80 photographs by Harry and there’s an interactive soundtrack accompanying the exhibition exploring the music, musicians and fashions of the decades. www.thelowry.com L

Titanic Exhibition Merseyside Maritime Museum – 2nd and 23rd January Have you ever wondered what the passengers on the Titanic experienced in the last hours before its demise? Well if you’re up for a little trip out then the staff at the Merseyside Maritime Museum have recreated the experience for visitors with ‘Titanic – The Night The Lights Went Out’. Visitors are encouraged to join first class passenger Emily Broughton Williams as she gives her account of her life on-board and that fateful night. It’s a free event and takes place at 1.30pm, 2.30pm and 3.30pm on Sunday 2nd January and Sunday 23rd January. The event runs alongside the ‘Spotlight on the Titanic’ exhibition which aims to separate fact from the fiction and explain why the vessel sank.

If you fancy a change from the identikit beers that adorn the supermarket shelves and gastro pubs up and down the land then get yourself down to the Sheridan Suite on Oldham Road. From the 19th – 22nd of January it is the home to the National Winter Ales Festival 2011 hosted by CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale). The festival boasts a selection of over 200 British and foreign beers, real ales, ciders and perrys. With such a vast selection, CAMRA guarantees that they will find something to suit the tastes of the most fickle of drinkers. No tickets are required as guests pay on the door, with prices varying from £2 to £5 depending on the day. Concessions are available for students.

For something more substantial, we tried the Pasta Al Forno (£5.95) which was baked rigatoni with tomato, mozzarella and meatballs. Not as filling as a traditional lasagne but served in a very similar style with a rich, creamy sauce. The Brasato Al Barolo (£7.20) – braised beef in red wine – was a real tasty treat. The sauce was really rich but due to only having a small portion it didn’t over face us.

Cicchetti Kendals, Deansgate

San Carlo has opened a new addition to its growing family, - Cicchetti, based in Kendals (although it has a separate entrance so it’s open from 8am for breakfast to 11pm). It draws on the good points of its older brother San Carlo with the heavy use of marble, open surroundings, specials boards and a large bar area but in my opinion, it’s huge differentiating factor, one that is a massive plus, is that it’s a million miles away from the chaos, hustle and bustle that greets you no matter what time of day you walk through the door of San Carlo. Cicchetti is the

laid back, comfortable, casual dining little sister. In terms of the customer experience, you get a lot more attention at Cicchetti. Open from breakfast through to dinner (I’ve heard that the breakfasts are cracking) the menu is tapas style. You can order most of the dishes as larger portions if you feel like but it’s nice to share... well sometimes! There is just too much to choose from. The dishes come out as they are cooked in true tapas-style. We started with the Crostini with Roasted Peppers and Garlic (£3.00). Nice crusty bread served

To round off the main dishes, we shared the Fillet of Seabass (£7.95) with olive oil, garlic, parsley and lemon zest, which was cooked perfectly and dressed so delicately, it stood out on its own. On the recommendation of our waiter we tried the Zucchinie Fritti (£2.40) as a side dish. I’m not a huge fan of zucchini but these were really tasty. We were told they are soaked in milk to keep moist then very lightly battered so it wasn’t greasy in the slightest.

As you enter Cicchetti, the open counter is packed full of delicious homemade breads, cakes, fruits and the servers tell me that in time they will use the counter as a deli to cater for the daytime take away market but for now the emphasis is on good, home-cooked food. As much as I want this restaurant to work and I’m sure it will, I really hope it retains its charm in offering the quieter side of dining where you can sit back and relax without the frenzied atmosphere that greets you across the road. New kid on the block - The Eatery has been open in the Northern Quarter since May and hasn’t looked back in serving hearty food to hungry locals. The family-run business was opened after the owners saw a gap in the area for serving quality food where diners could eat in or takeaway. Since opening, they’ve cleverly reacted to the local market by opening up an area inside with a large meeting table, perfect for lunch meetings where you need to spread paper-work across the table whilst munching on a jacket potato. They’ve also

just installed computers so that any guests wishing to browse the net can do so over breakfast and there’s free Wi-Fi so you can lunch and work at the same time. The menu is plentiful, catering for all breakfast and dinner choices from a traditional English Breakfast (£4.95) and Eggs Florentine (£4.95) through to the lunch time dishes you would expect to find on any good lunch menu but coupled with daily hot specials and home-made soups to offer something a little bit special. In the summer you can’t miss their colourful salad bar, whilst in the winter it’s all about warming dishes to keep your fuel levels up.

On our visit the hot specials were Beef Stew and Dumplings and Thai Green Curry and Rice (£4.95). The Thai Green Curry, although not brimming with flavour, was delicious and a great lunch option. The portions aren’t huge but for a healthy lunch under a fiver I was pleased. To shake things up a bit, they also offer a speciality hot sandwich of the day and we tried the Beef, Stilton and Rocket Open Sandwich (£3.75). The Stilton was beautiful and felt like a real treat. Beats home-made sandwiches for sure! I couldn’t help but notice and be tempted by their Fish Finger Sandwich on the menu (£3.75) which I was told is one of their best sellers – maybe next time! Aside from the paninis, open sandwiches and fresh soups (changed daily), they also offer lots of lovely cakes, scones and smoothies so it’s really a great lunch option where you’re sure to find something to tickle your taste buds. Importantly for those readers not based in the Northern Quarter, they do delivery so if you want a lovely lunch at work then give them a call. L

Corrie Goes Artistic at The Richard Goodall Gallery – Until 15th January

Stars from the past 50 years of Coronation Street have been recreated in stunning portraits by the renowned artists Central Station. The artists, famous for their Factory Records album covers, have created the pieces to celebrate the soap’s 50th anniversary. The 25 colourful portraits include soap icons old and new with Ken and Deidre Barlow, Hilda Ogden, Rosie Webster and Becky McDonald being amongst those who have been immortalised. The pieces are currently on show at the Richard Goodall Gallery until 15th January. The artists first approached ITV with the idea back in June last year and have gone on to recreate the stars in their patented “Madchester,” style. You’ll recognise Central Station, who shot to fame as the inspirational design team behind album covers for a number of Manchester bands, most famously the Happy Mondays. Janelle Monae at The Academy Grammy award-winning Janelle Monae has got the moves, the words, in fact the whole artistic vision to dethrone Prince. Channeling James Brown’s dancing, Grace Jones’ theatrics and Funkadelic’s bass lines, she’s a dynamic ball of energy.

Decked out in her trademark uniform of black and white, she’s quiffed up and ready to go. Hitting the stage with a gaggle of funky nuns, it’s clear that this will be a journey into uptempo soul tinged with cartoonish theatrics.

The spirit of Ziggy Stardust and 30s Berlin cabaret is very much alive.

Her vocal range is diverse, stretching from the soul drenched ‘Tightrope’ to an acapella cover version of Nat King Cole’s ‘Smile’. It’s clear why the 25-year-old from Atlanta has been making waves since signing to P Diddy’s label Bad Boy Records in 2005. Her style is outrageous, fun and funky. It’s a pity that the alien theme of her recent concept album The ArchAndroid isn’t carried through the set list. This seems to disappear after the initial visual build up, leaving some of her tunes sounding pedestrian in comparison to her on-stage antics. Janelle is unique, her sci-fi reality of lindy hopping, balloons, lasers, jiving, wigs, costumes, and on-stage painting is the future of funk. Go and see her other worldly show and I dare you not to dance! L

Janelle is on fire; she’s a natural entertainer with dancing that would put Little Richard to shame and crazy backing visuals showing everything from technicolour African masks to Muhammad Ali boxing. Her band, complete with a brass section, are having a riot on stage re-enacting a set list based in 2719 in the megacity Metropolis.

Message from the Police

People enjoying a night out are being warned about the dangers of getting into a drunken fight. Police in Manchester are working to reduce the levels of crime caused by partygoers drinking too much alcohol. Too much drink can turn a good night into a tragic disaster with people behaving in ways they wouldn’t do normally and finding themselves in vulnerable situations. Young men aged 18-25 are the most likely to commit and be victims of serious violent crime. Alcohol-fuelled violence has claimed the lives of 13 people over the past five years in Greater Manchester.

It only takes one punch to kill someone and destroy the lives of people’s families. People who have had a drink do things they wouldn’t dream of doing when they’re sober and a stupid, split-second reaction can have devastating consequences. Officers across Manchester are working with licensed premises, universities and taxi firms to promote the One Punch campaign. Posters, window stickers and beer mats with a hard-hitting image are being displayed in pubs, clubs and bars.

Gypsy & the Cat are a pair of friends from Melbourne who only started making music a year ago in their garage. Their songs caught the attention of an Australian radio station, which aired their first track “Jona Vark”. Since then the twosome have caught the attention of Mark Ronson, featuring on his East Village radio show, and have subsequently moved to London to mix their debut album. Their music is described as a mix of the glorious melodies of Fleetwood Mac and the delicious vocals of MGMT, something which they’re keen to convey in their new single “The Piper’s Song.” Influenced by a mixture of musicians ranging from Jeff Buckley all the way to Daft Punk, the talented duo made up of Xavier Bacash, 22 and Lionel Towers, 24, recorded their entire album in their garage studio in Sydney. With their album now set to be mixed by producers who have worked with MGMT and Muse, Gypsy & the Cat are set for big things in 2011. www.gypsyandthecat.com L

The Heartbreaks Manchester-based band The Heartbreaks are looking to make it big this year with their brand of classic British indie pop. The four members Matthew Whitehouse, Joseph Kondras, Ryan Wallace and Chris Deakin relocated to Manchester from Morecambe. Their sound fits into the traditional mould of British indie music consisting of jangly guitars with big anthemic choruses. The band have been compared to The Smiths but the guys are determined to carve out a sound of their own. With spots as support for bands including Hurts and The View The Heartbreaks are hoping their 80s inspired indie sound will be a big hit in 2011. We caught the band live at Salford’s Sacred Trinity Church The Heartbreaks wear their influences on their rolled up sleeves. It’s all faded seaside glamour, kitchen sink dramas and complicated relationships. The Heartbreaks are clearly brimming with charm and exude romantic ramblings. However tonight’s performance at the atmospheric church is fraught with technical hitches and the band’s

obvious 80s sensibilities are lost amongst stained glass windows, pews and a rowdy young crowd on a night which should have been all about them. Matthew is an engaging vocalist with a lovely falsetto voice that captures the coy innocence of youth. Morecambe is portrayed as a typical small town complete with fighting and drinking, leaving our heroes looking for an escape route. With every lyric like "can you be derivative and retro and still have an exciting future?” the strains of early Suede, The Smiths and Wild Beasts peep through.

With songs such as Liar, My Dear and Save Our Souls the band are clearly in awe of Morrissey and Marr. They claim that "there's nothing more inspirational than the British seaside'' which is a welcome change from the sneering lad rock of The Courteeners. This sensitive bunch of boys are less about bravado and more about reading Oscar Wilde whilst drinking a chamomile tea and brandy. If this group had burst onto the scene in the mid 80s they would have been crowned indie kings instead they’ve got a lot of competition but 2011 should be a good year for them, if they manage to get those technical glitches sorted! A lot of my family are still here so when I play in Manchester I head to my Gran’s for a nice northern brew. I read that you went to uni but dropped out to be a DJ, is that right? I went to uni in Glasgow and did a year studying physiotherapy but it wasn’t inspiring. I love music. My dad advised me to do something that I could use in the music industry so I transferred to business studies but didn’t like that either! Her debut single was supposed to be for Rihanna but she liked it so much she kept it for herself. Liam Gallagher opens Pretty Green store in city centre Perfect for wannabe rock ‘n’ roll stars, Liam Gallagher’s new Pretty Green pop-up store has just opened on King Street. The store, one of only two in the country, was opened by the man himself alongside a DJ set provided by Primal Scream bassist Mani.

Around 100 fans braved the cold weather on the store’s opening day for a chance to see the man himself and be one of the first to get their hands on his exclusive garments. To some, the clothing may seem pricy but as well as receiving a quality garment you’re also getting a piece of the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle!

Happy New Year! It’s 2011, which means the dreaded December gigs are over. Christmas is a weird time as a comic. It means motorways are closed and gigs cancelled due to snow. Oh, and there’s a good chance that those gigs that do go ahead will be full of work dos and office parties, who would much rather you stand there and call Keith from HR a pillock (in less glamorous terms, of course) instead of delivering the material you’ve actually written. It becomes less about delivering jokes and more like spinning plates; overly drunk plates who are convinced they’re the funniest person in the office, so of course they’ll be the funniest person at the gig. Capoeira Ask most people about Capoeira, and reactions range from blank looks to vague memories of a BBC advert filled with graceful acrobatics against a rainy cityscape. In fact, this hard-toclassify dance/fight/game has its origins as a form of resistance to slavery, and has to be the most culturally rich and fascinating ways to keep fit on offer in Manchester. West Africans sent to work in Brazil’s plantations developed Capoeira as a way to retain their cultural heritage, mixing dances, combat games and music from back home to form something uniquely ‘theirs’, rather than imposed by their new colonial rulers. It also offered a way to pass the time and to stay strong and healthy in case the need arose for a revolt.

Manchester’s Cultural Association for Capoeira Angola (known as ACCA, by its Portuguese initials), has been teaching and practicing Capoeira in the North West since 2006. Its beginners’ classes start by introducing the movements of Capoeira, building strength, flexibility and balance and then moving onto more complex techniques and movements.

Well 2010 is officially behind us, and what a year it’s been! Corrie turned 50, the big royal engagement/another bank holiday next year, Kerry Katona finally landed a decent agent, everybody knows Stacey killed Archie in Enders and Simon Cowell took a step closer to becoming the richest man in the world. It’s been a great year for Manchester. The Northern Quarter was officially crowned the Best Neighbourhood in the UK, a feat which truly is testament to the enduring hard work of all the local independents to turn what was an area better known for curb crawlers into one of the most vibrant areas in the UK. Who can forget Captain America being filmed? If you’d have told me at the beginning of the year that I’d be taking a stroll through New York in the 40’s, I’d not have believed you. It’s almost as exciting as thinking I’d seen Chris Evans shooting a scene. Turned out it was actually his body double but it was still a very nice view. So now the presents are unwrapped, the turkey’s long gone and the Christmas Markets are starting to be taken down, it’s time to put to rest last year and think of the year ahead. 46
