Hello one and all, So how was your summer? Fun-filled and action-packed I hope but if it was anything like mine, I spent a few glorious weeks in a sun-induced glow only to have it well and truly dampened in July and August. But that’s what makes us Mancunians hardened to those westerly winds hey! It’s September already, which means three things happen. Firstly, we start moaning about how fast the year has gone (but it really has!) and that Christmas is a mere 12 weeks or so away, the TV is dominated by the return of the football and we dust off the thicker coats and get ready for those autumnal colours to start appearing. From September we start seeing lots of events based around food and music - let’s face it, we can hardly sit outside in Piccadilly Gardens with a brolly! The train station is set to be much more welcoming and bright and Sir Richard Leese, leader of Manchester City Council, says that the restoration “will contribute greatly to the continued regeneration of this area of the city.” Expect a complete re-vamp by 2014. L

Once named Britain’s worst train station, Victoria Station is to receive a big cash injection to help with much needed repairs. These include replacing the leaking roof that was damaged after the IRA bomb, meaning no more nearly breaking your neck dodging puddles!

Great Neighbourhood Award for the NQ? The Northern Quarter has been shortlisted by the Academy of Urbanism for a Great Neighbourhood Award. A group of academics came for a visit in August to have a scout round and see what the NQ’s 06

She’s turned her back on the high street for an investigation into consumerism and its effects and is going cold turkey. The Cocoa Emporium

The Cocoa Emporium in Affleck’s Palace is a small company that supplies a wide range of cakes and chocolates including vegan and gluten free varieties that are made fresh every day and can be provided for any event – weddings, birthdays, leaving parties etc. The Cocoa Emporium is the vision of owners and chocolate enthusiasts Lisa Goddard and Helen Woodawiss, and what started as a passion for great chocolate and fine food swiftly turned into a desire to share a fantastic taste experience. Helen’s aim is to provide handmade chocolates and cakes using the finest ingredients. For chocolates, Valrhona Couverture has been sourced, which is made from the finest cocoa beans to create chocolate recipes that really have to be tried to be believed. When it comes to cakes, the team are always experimenting with new flavours every day, trying out less traditional cupcake recipes to see how popular they are.

The Cocoa Emporium is now open as a vintage cafe, serving a variety of teas, coffees, hot chocolates and milkshakes to have in or to take away. They are encouraging Manchester workers that bring packed lunches to work and don’t want to eat in the sterile confines of the office, to come along to the cafe and have a cup of tea or coffee and perhaps a cake with their packed lunch. They don’t serve sandwiches but they do provide a lovely environment to relax in. Orders can be taken in-store or online. Welcome to My World

‘Welcome to my World’ is based around 20 celebrities who have gay relatives or friends and each celebrity photograph is accompanied by slogans such as “my brother/mother/friend is gay”. Famous faces participating in the exhibition include Graham Norton, Sarah Cox, Anthony Cotton, Katherine Kelly, Patsy Kensit and many others. Coronation Street star Kym Marsh appears in the lineup and has been very vocal about her excitement in taking part in the exhibition, “I was made up to be picked as one of 20 famous faces with strong links to the gay community. The pictures were all about playing up to gay stereotypes and my picture portrays a very strong female image…I was delighted to get involved.”

The picturesque Tatton Park estate has been transformed to become the setting for a showcase of new artworks at the second Tatton Park Biennial. Twenty one artists have been commissioned to create works with the theme of ‘Framing Reality’ as a subject. The idea is that the works will explore what links people to place and visions for the future. A snapshot of the commissioned works include: • A collapsing tree house installed in Tatton’s arboretum linked to traditional English landscapes • The smallest cinema in the world – a bespoke six-seat mobile cinema showing a film shot at Tatton

Wistful Wondering at the Weekend

As part of Manchester’s Pride celebrations, a new photography exhibition will be displayed at Selfridges throughout September.

Zinc Bar and Grill Tummy Rumbles

Where? Zinc has been a favourite after-work drinks destination but its food offering often gets overlooked. After a few changes over the years, the place has finally found its groove when it comes to grub. Diners can opt for the traditional restaurant or the more casual bar area. To Start With The menu is vast. Almost so vast that you question how can they specialise in so many different types of cuisine, but that’s where skill in the kitchen is important. Zinc specialise in world classics and pride themselves on their daily chef’s specials.

The menu has a very strong influence of pan-Asian and after probing a little further, I was told

that this was due to changes in tastes. As we’ve become more health conscious, Zinc felt their menu needed to fit with this hence the large selection of healthier and light dishes such as the Thai Fish Soup offered as a lunch special. To start, we kept it simple with Crispy Duck Spring Rolls served with plum and pineapple dipping sauce (£6.50). Served elegantly, the rolls were stuffed full of duck so well worth the price given the amount of meat inside. Moving onto Mains I tried the Malaysian Spiced Chicken Breast, Sweet Potato with Coconut and Lime (£14.25) and a side portion of Pak Choi with chilli and garlic (£3.35). It was really delicious with a nice mix of spices

My guest also followed with the Asian theme choosing the Thai Green Chicken Curry (£14.25). A little different to usual Thai curry, this was quite dry in consistency, more of a stir-fry but moreish all the same and with a powerful spicy kick. The menu covers pretty much everything; salads, grill selections, pasta and risottos and vegetarian dishes including Butternut Squash Tart (£12.50). Room for anymore? Desserts really are a class act at Zinc. Favourites such as Sticky Toffee Pudding (£6.15) sit alongside Malteser Sorbet (£5.15) We decided to share the Eton Mess Sundae (£6.15) – heavenly and most definitely recommended! The service at Zinc is exceptional. The only sticking point is the prices are on the high side for Manchester restaurants. A main meal and a side will set you back around £18 so it’s fairly pricey if you stack it up against a good Thai restaurant in town. Nonetheless, it’s a great place to go for an intimate meal or if you’re with friends, sit in the bar area and soak up the cocktail atmosphere. www.zincbar.co.uk L

To Start Binary bar is a bar-cum restaurant that doesn’t really specialise in anything other than serving its punters a wide variety of options for breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper. They even offer pizzas to take away, you just call them and 24

The pizzas are a real speciality at Binary Bar. I went for the Giardinera (£6.00) topped with peppers, red onion, mushroom and cherry tomato. It was really delicious with a fluffy fresh base and lots of gooey cheese on top.

Where? Castlefield – swamped in the summer but aside from the major players around the basin, the little bars and restaurants on the fringes often get overlooked. We headed to Binary Bar to try out their food offering. It’s a neighbourhood bar with a steady stream of locals, great offers and friendly staff waiting to greet you.

The exhibition ‘Bardot, Bond, Beckham and Beyond’ features new and unseen images of the most iconic stars of the 20th Century – Sean Connery as James Bond, Audrey Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot plus more, all discovered during extensive archiving of Terry’s fifty year career behind the lens. Alongside these never before seen images, Terry will taking part in an exclusive preview evening on 23rd September at the gallery where he will be available to answer questions on the intriguing stories behind his pictures – such as how Ava Gardner introduced him to Frank Sinatra and an insight into his lifelong friendships with icons such as Sir Elton John and Sir Michael Caine. Terry’s work has been exhibited around the world and his images spanning five decades including photographs of Nelson Mandela, David Beckham and The Royal Family are renowned for their remarkable candour and intimacy

Salford Music Festival – 9th to 12th September Running over a long weekend, the Salford Music Festival takes place at seven pubs across Salford – The Kings Arms, The Hope, The Crescent, Wangies, The White Horse, The Plough and The Weaste. Paul Van Dyk Congratulations on your latest release “Gatecrasher Anthems - Paul Van Dyk”. Gatecreasher was an institution in Sheffield, what Manchester clubs have you played and what were your experiences? I played at the Hacienda during the 90’s and recently played at Sankeys which was fun as they refused to let me in because I was wearing trainers! I turned around to go and the promoter came running out after me panicking! I’m back in Manchester on 8th October at the Warehouse Project. Playing all over the world must be mind-blowing. Are there any favourite venues you’ve played at or anywhere you would like to play? I wouldn’t say I have a favourite venue. I have a very clear idea about the general sound and music of what I want to play and everything else is down to the connection with the audience so it’s always different. You’re known as the pioneer of trance and electronic dance music and over the years we’ve heard many collaborations in addition to your own produced material; is being a live DJ and live production where you see your future? I’m a musician and my favourite music is electronic music and this is what I have done pretty much the majority of my working life and I hope I can do it until I retire!

What top tip would you offer to any Large readers looking to break into the DJ scene? One of the main things is that you really know what you like and what you want to do. At the end of the day you’re in front of an audience and you have to convince them that what you do actually means something and has a purpose. If you have doubts then it will come across. Growing up in East Berlin you had to listen secretly to European music. How different do you think your career would have been had social networking sites such as MySpace been available to you? Well obviously it would have been a completely different picture. We’ve seen substantial growth in communication between the artist and the fans. It’s good for an artist to have a direct response from the audience. What other unfulfilled ambitions do you have? I’m working on my next big artist album, that’s my next goal; to deliver something that actually has substance and that I feel happy with. Otherwise it’s always the small things and I think that might be part of the secret of why I’m still around. I take every single gig very seriously so I don’t have super-duper goals of ‘I must do this or that’. For me one of the main ambitions is to deliver as close as possible perfect set when I play, regardless of how big or small the audience is... I’m never easy on myself!

Fine Lines @ The Deaf Institute It’s an uncharacteristically wintery evening in Manchester this evening. Luckily, inside the Deaf Institute the atmosphere is warm enough to dry even the wettest of socks.

First band, The Sleazy Mcguires look like a rather odd collection of gentlemen. A group that looks as though the noise they’re about to make may not be consistent, but rather an awkward rabble of disparate tracks. Luckily these fears are quickly misplaced when the group launch into a melee of raucous brawl inducing rock n’ roll.

While they subscribe to no nonsense hillbilly bar brawl style of rock, you can hear the range of influences they draw upon to make them a palatable selection for tonight’s mixed audience. You can’t help but feel as though were they a little higher on the bill, they might garner a more raucous response from a currently timid group of spectators. Keep your eyes open for them. Second band The Rubys are tasked with the difficult job of following a pretty great opening act. On several levels they succeed. They seem a little green, understandable for a relatively new band, however they could definitely benefit from honing their sound slightly. Despite this, they paint with sweeping, broad strokes, adding nuances of colour across their set. Their songs are strong, just lacking confidence a little.

Tonight they play an assortment of tracks from their upcoming EP due to be released later this year. Headliners Finelines take to the stage. They’re a well-presented group who play well crafted indie melodies. Poppy, while not bordering on annoying or staid. The music is a blend of mainstream rock and heartfelt, stripped-down acoustic numbers. In particular, ‘Wrong Side’ marks them out as a compelling act. While tonight they lack some of the breadth their

songs encompass on record, it’s justifiable given the difficulty of hauling a string section onto the tiny Deaf Institute stage. However, they would benefit from some synths in order to give their songs more depth live.

Tonight’s gig is a fundraiser by the Le Tower to Tower team who intend to ride from Blackpool to Paris in order to raise money for the Fanconi Hope and NSPCC.

The songs are well crafted and solid, incredibly solid in fact. Each member of the Mcguires is quietly adept with their instrument, and extremely modest in their playing. What they lack in sass, they make up for in an unyielding selection of bluesy rock and roll. Delightfully named tracks such as ‘Cross Gender Blues’ are played with gusto, and met with appreciation from the attentive crowd.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable set from the group. We hope to see more of them in the future and let’s hope the gig raised a substantial amount for the charity. Jonno Hopkins

Collette Costello is a new online women's fashion label based in Manchester. They’ve just launched their online shop and if you like vintage fashion and retro-style fabrics then make sure you pay it a visit.

Collette first unleashed her designs back in 2008 inspired by Victorian Manchester. Since then, demand has shot through the roof with a number of boutiques stocking select pieces including Junk Shop. Collette, you’ve designed for high street brands before you launched your own range. What do you feel lacks from high street collections? Most notably, that most manufacturing is done abroad in the Far East, which might seem great against costs but it means that there are limitations to styles because you’re tied into the garment having to be produced in the cheapest possible way. Being an independent designer means I can add lots of detail and fabrics to make effects. Your new collection is out this month, how would you sum it up to large readers? It’s vintage inspired. I modelled it on vintage garments worn by celebs in the 1950s with lots of feminine drapes, good tailoring and classic cuts. I try to use luxurious fabric that may cost more but has more dramatic effect.

What trends should our readers make sure they are cottoning onto for Autumn/Winter this year? There are two main trends in my collection - tartan and brights, bright dresses that are classic and classy, not trashy. As a fashion lecturer and designer for high street shops, what do you think have been the main changes in the fashion industry? The main shift has been towards throw-away fashion, people just wearing a garment once and never wearing again – this was mainly before the recession. Great Salford Swim – 26th September The Great Salford Swim is a new event for the 2010 sporting calendar in Manchester. It’s a one-mile outdoor swim taking place in Salford Quays and is open to swimmers of all abilities (but only for the brave!) It’s a really safe event but you must take the time to train properly. You wouldn’t run 10k without any training so don’t swim a mile! It’s also probably worth hiring a wetsuit for the day. It’s not compulsory (unless the water temperature drops below 15˚c) but wetsuits can make you more buoyant and actually a little bit faster. Make sure you can complete a mile confidently in the pool before taking part in the competition, but it’s not just aimed at professional swimmers - it’s for everyone serious about taking part and serious about training. High-five for fitness

Sweat It Up, Work It Out

Being new to Manchester and a little aware of my gentlyexpanding waistband, I decided to try out some of the city’s fitness classes. And what better challenge than to blast five lessons in five days? First up, Aqua Fit at the Aquatics Centre. Run by a charming local called David, he has been teaching the watery workout for ten years, and makes the 45-minute session fun and relaxed by cracking a few jokes to keep everyone in good spirits.

It’s also impact-free, so great for people with joint problems, but it does little to build muscle so those hoping to sculpt their pecs might want to look elsewhere. All in all, a friendly, accessible class that was easy to pick up but still made me use muscles I never knew I had.

I slipped into the pool with some trepidation, concerned that my poorly-coordinated limbs wouldn’t be able to keep up with the regulars.

And for those seeking top value for money, the £3.80 fee allows you access to the pool afterwards as well.

But I had no need to worry, as we ran through some warm-up exercises, then plunged (excuse the pun) into routines designed to gently work the whole body.

I definitely felt the burn in my arms and torso, and several dynamic moves worked hard on my abdominal muscles - always good for a food lover like me. 56
