FROM THE DIRECTOR’S OFFICE... Welcome to La Rosière, a veritable alpine paradise! Once you experience everything La Rosière has to offer, you’ll see exactly why it’s considered such a unique gem: Abundant snow, a south-facing exposure bathed in glorious all-day sunshine, a truly international ski area spanning France and Italy, beautiful authentic architecture, a focus on preserving nature, and, of course, a warm and friendly welcome from the locals. This unique combination deserves to be supported by a focus on innovation and a passion for customer service, so this winter we’ve once again pulled out all the stops with new services and offerings to help create even more unforgettable experiences for our clients.

47

First on the list is the new Altispa La Rosière, a 300m2 wellness and relaxation spa: Take in the view from the panoramic sauna, experience salt therapy for the first time, or sample a selection of high quality wellness products. Once your batteries are recharged, venture outside and test your mettle on the new Petit Saint-Bernard Fun Cross, a playful piste designed for children (and the young at heart). In other big news, we are proud to soon be home to the very first Hyatt hotel in the Alps. The Hyatt Centric La Rosière will open its doors in December 2017, and we look forward to being the next stop for the trendy Hyatt Centric boutique hotel concept after Hawaii and New York! Finally, for fans of intense experiences, we are putting the finishing touches on a stunning ‘Skywalk’ experience at the Fort, including a digital photo point to help you capture and share memories.

20

From 7:30am to 9am, be first on the piste with our Fresh Tracks VIP sessions.

44

Beginners or adrenaline junkies, La Rosière caters for all ages and levels of mountain bikers.

As always, rest assured that as we improve the quality of our offerings, we will always maintain the authenticity that defines La Rosière. We hope you enjoy browsing through our magazine, and that it offers a taste of the fun, relaxation, and amazing experiences that await you in La Rosière and throughout the Espace San Bernardo. THE SKI AREA AND ITALY

LA ROSIÈRE E S PAC E SA N B E R N A R D O

With an expansive 160km international ski area spanning France and Italy, La Rosière boasts a fantastic choice of long, immaculately groomed pistes. On the French side, the south-facing exposure is perfect for more relaxed cruising in the sun and beloved by families and beginners, while the north-facing slopes on the Italian side can be the ideal challenge for more adventurous skiers. At the start of your day, from the snowfront, savour the breathtaking 180-degree views of the Tarentaise Valley; La Rosière truly has one of the most spectacular views in the Alps. Best of all, to finish off your day, take a moment (or two) to enjoy one of the most the stunning sunsets anywhere. From dawn to dusk, La Rosière’s slopes are bathed in sunshine! In addition to sunshine, La Rosière is also famous for snow! With the Mont Blanc and Petit-St-Bernard pass just a stone’s throw away, the Espace San Bernardo has unique weather conditions that ensure the resort receives excellent snowfall from December to April, and is considered to have some of the best snow levels in the Northern Alps.

The perfect blend of sunshine and snow, with a touch of dolce vita. As the only international ski area in the Northern Alps, the Espace San Bernardo has linked La Rosière with the Italian resort of La Thuile since winter 1983-1984. Grab your skis and set off on an adventure to explore new horizons and another culture! With slopes on both the north and the south faces of the mountain, excellent skiing and varied terrain is the order of the day. You might even want to brush up your Italian while on the slopes (though most Aosta Valley inhabitants speak excellent French and English)!

A jaunt in the

woods For a charming change of scenery from high alpine terrain, drop below the treeline and explore the varied pistes in La Rosière that pass through the forests of Les Ecudets and Petit Bois, as well as the stretch of trees above the village of La Thuile. When stormier weather sets in there’s nothing better than skiing in the forest, well protected from the elements; the conifer trees provide all the contrast you need on those whiteout days so that you can keep enjoying your skiing until the lifts close. Near La Rosière you will mainly find fir and spruce trees that keep their needles all year long, and after a snowfall they will be beautifully covered in a soft white blanket, creating a truly magical and majestic experience for all to enjoy! Closer to La Thuile the forests are mainly made up of larch trees, which take on a stunning shade of orange that almost shimmers in daylight. Take the time to stop for a break to relax with a delicious hot chocolate, and try and catch a glimpse of the wildlife that inhabits these spectacular forests.

THE ITALIAN JOB ON SKIS Fancy strapping on your skis and experiencing a stunning alpine spa in Italy? This unique adventure is perfect to experience as Romeo & Juliet, Romeo & Romeo, or Juliet & Juliet. It’s up to you! Strap on your skis and head out from La Rosière (or the Ecudets lift from Seez). Don’t forget a backpack with a pair of shoes, a change of clothes, and your swimsuit. Take advantage of the wide, rolling pistes on the La Rosière side of the valley as you head towards La Thuile. Getting to the Italian resort should take between 1.5 and 2 hours, and can be on either blues or reds, or you can even ride the cable car down down to La Thuile from the Suches sector.

PAC K AG E

ADVENTURE

D O LC E V I TA

The most ambitious among you can try the Franco Berthod piste. Named after a former Italian ski champion, this black run has a 73% incline, one of the steepest on the planet! (Don’t overdo it -- the adventure is just beginning.)

A unique experience spanning France and Italy! Traverse the Espace San Bernardo on a trip to the stunning Pré Saint Didier thermal spa in the Aosta Valley.

Depending on your tastes (and the time), you can have lunch either on the French or Italian side of the mountain. On our side, we recommend l’Antigel, Le Dégel Club, La Traversette, and Le Plan du Repos. In addition to delicious cuisine, these charming mountain restaurants all offer a breathtaking view of Mont Pourri. On the Italian side, don’t miss Le Riondet or Maison Carrel for fantastic pasta and other delicacies -- perfect fuel for the mountain. If you’re in a hurry to get to the Pré Saint Didier Spa, your best bet is to grab lunch in La Thuile itself. The shuttle from the Hotel Miramonti will pick you up at the foot of the slopes and drop you off at the hotel so you can change in your room. An unmissable local stop is Le Pépita Café; a 5 minute walk to delicious food at very reasonable prices. Try the Tiramisu (see pg. 15), it’s worth the detour!

FROM

195€

Offer includes: 2-day Espace San Bernardo ski pass

Entry to the Pré Saint Didier thermal spa (on day 1, from 3pm onwards) Transfers in a private minibus (from the bottom of the slopes in La Thuile to the hotel)

From 16/12/2017to 14/04/2018 according to availability. Offer also possible on weekends, when booked 5 days in advance. Price per person. Price shown is for information purposes only, as per winter 2017. (2) 4-star Le Miramonti Hotel in La Thuile (Italy), in a comfort-standard double room. Offer includes breakfast and dinner, excluding drinks.

After a good night’s sleep and tasty Italian breakfast, it’s time to snap back into those bindings and head back to France. If you have a bit of room in the backpack, bring back some local chocolate (see pg. 33), Aosta ham, or Limoncello. If this Italian adventure sounds tempting, get in touch with La Rosière Reservation and our friendly staff will set it all up. Of course, dropping into Italy can also be done in one day, so make sure you take advantage of the only French/Italian ski area in the Northern Alps. Don’t forget to start heading back towards France by 3pm at the latest!

A DELICIOUS DILEMMA FRANCE VS ITALY

THE CONTENDERS In the blue/red corner, the blueberry tart. Also known as an Alpine Tart (a classic French dessert), this delicious blueberry tart is a favourite with both young and old. Historically, the tart was considered a winter dessert made with preserves from the summer. Blueberries grow as high up as 2500m and therefore quickly became a favourite of workers and shepherds in the region. The perfect mix of sweet and crusty pastry and the twist of slightly acidic ‘tart blueberries’ is a true delight! In the red/green corner to our right we have the Tiramisu. The grand star of Italian dessert; a creamy dessert, rich in biscuits, with a strong coffee flavour and a generous dose of chocolatey goodness. A real treat! The dessert was invented in Tuscany during the 16th century. Duke Cosme the 3rd of Médici discovered it during travels to Siena and declared it his favourite dessert. He brought it back to the heart of Florence and its popularity quickly spread all over Italy. The name Tiramisu derives from the Italian phrase “tirami sù”, or “pick me up” in English.

14

BATTLE OF THE DESSERTS The dessert of choice from the Alps and the unmissable Tiramisu: let the match begin! • History: Multiple legends and a long standing history: the Tiramisu takes the first point. • Conservation: Several months for the blueberry tart, but only a couple of days for the Italian treat, so one for the tart. One all. • Preparation: the Tiramisu might be quicker to make but needs to rest for 8 hours before the first bite. A point for the blueberry tart. • Notoriety: The Tiramisu is probably one of the most well-known desserts in Europe but a blueberry tart can be found both in North America and Asia: A draw! • Taste: That’s up to you to decide! But why choose? Blueberry tart with lunch and Tiramisu with dinner sound great to us.

RECIPE (SERVES 4) By Tony, head chef at La Traversette on the slopes in La Rosière.

RECIPE (SERVES 4/6) By Mauro Matta, head chef at Pepita Cafè in La Thuile.

Time: 50 mins preparation, 50 minutes cooking & cooling.

Time: 30 mins preparation, 8 to 12 hours chilling.

Ingredients • 50g plain flour • 150g butter softened • 1 pinch of salt • 5g baking powder • 100g caster sugar (including 5g vanilla sugar, optional) • 1 egg • 500g blueberries (fresh or fresh, depending on the season)

Ingredients • 4 eggs • 120g caster • 500g mascarpone • Around 30 ‘Savoyard’ finger biscuits • Bitter strong coffee • Cocoa powder • A few drops of Amaretto

For the custard • 4 egg yolks • 130g caster sugar • 250ml milk • 1tsp vanilla extract • 50g plain flour 1. Mix together with your fingers the flour, salt, baking powder, and then roughly mix in the sugar. 2. Add the egg and combine all the mixture to make a ball. 3. Cover it with cling-film and put in the fridge for about 1 hour. 4. Roll out the pastry to and place in tart dish. 5. Heat the milk in a saucepan and add the vanilla extract. Beat the egg yolk and sugar together and then beat in the flour. Pour the hot milk slowly onto the egg, sugar and flour mixture, mix and pour everything back into the saucepan. Allow to thicken without stirring. Let it cool. Spread the custard on the bottom of the pastry. 6. Place the blueberries on custard and sprinkle with icing sugar. 7. Cook for 30 minutes at 180°.

1. Make your coffee and add the Ameretto. 2. Separate the egg whites and yolks. 3. Whisk the egg yolks with the sugar until your mixture is nice and smooth. Then gradually stir in the mascarpone until the mixture is completely blended. 4. Beat the egg whites until they’re nice and firm, and then delicately fold them into the egg, sugar and mascarpone mixture. 5. Dip the biscuits into the coffee mixture (cover them, but make sure they don’t become soggy) and line the bottom of your dish with some of them. 6. Pour part of the mascarpone mixture over the biscuits and then add another layer of biscuits on top. Keep adding different layers of mascarpone mixture and biscuits. Top layer being mascarpone. 7. Sprinkle with cocoa powder. 8. Leave the Tiramisu in a cool place or preferably a fridge for at least 8 hours until set.

Get ready to shred! SKI WEAR Comfort, warmth and breathability are all vital features of ski clothing. We’ve all experienced days being too hot or too cold, and the right gear can definitely help. Generally speaking, it’s a good idea to wear three layers of clothing: A base layer should be warm and breathable; the second should provide insulation; and the third should protect you from the cold, wind and humidity.

THE SUN

Skin protection is absolutely essential at altitude. Protect your whole family’s skin with a high protection sunscreen like Tingerlaat SPF50+.

La Rosière is famous for it’s south facing slopes with sunshine from morning until evening, keeping you warm and boosting your vitamin D! Always wear googles or sunglasses to protect your eyes. Ask for advice in the sports shops to ensure that your eye-wear has suitable UV protection for a mountain environment.

SKI BOOTS You can find a selection of official La Rosière - Espace San Bernardo items to buy at the Tourist Office.

26

Take your time to choose the right size boot with expert advice, especially for children, who often insist on boots that are too big. Wear a good pair of technical socks (and never wear two pairs on top of each other!) Although some are more rigid than others, your boots should be comfortable while keeping the foot and ankle stable.

HELMET Helmets are not just for children! We strongly recommend that everyone wears a helmet on the slopes, whatever your age.

THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT Choosing equipment for your level of skiing is essential. The experts at all the shops in La Rosière are happy to help with tips and advice, so don’t hesitate to pop in and have a chat.

SKIS Choose a pair that is adapted to your preferred style of skiing; groomers, off-piste, slalom, freestyle, etc. Ideally, they should be simultanously fun to ski and forgiving enough to make progress easy.

IN THE BAG Don’t forget to take a bottle of water, some tissues and a snack like dried fruit or a cereal bar. 27

VILLAGES

Formerly mountain pastures The resort of La Rosière is built upon areas of Alpine pasture dotted with high-altitude rustic chalets. The resort has been developed gradually, primarily by the inhabitants of Montvalezan and its villages. Unlike other resorts in the area, La Rosière’s development has been spread over many years, meaning that the resort has preserved its unique atmosphere and has managed to ensure that its new buildings blend into the Alpine setting.

SKI BUSES J. GAIDET

The benefits of shared transport Every 15 minutes, you can catch a bus to the slopes or back to your accommodation. This ski bus network, which serves the neighbourhoods of Les Eucherts, L’Averne, Le Gollet, Le Centre and La Maison du Ski as well as the Campsite (specific timetable).

SUSTAINABLE

DEVELOPMENT A re-turfing is done after any work on the slopes to preserve the flora, prevent terrain movements and of course to give our cows something to graze on. La Rosière has obtained the 2 flower label from the “Villes et Villages Fleuris” - Towns and villages in bloom, which reward sustainable development in villages as well as the quality of life and attractiveness of the town.

A protected area for grouse has been set up near the “Bout de la route” path, their favorite spot to take shelter during the winter. Devices are also installed systematically on cables to improve visibility.

La Rosière was one of the first communes to adopt underground containers for recycling. Today 29 recycling spots are present in resort. To keep the pistes clean, pocket ashtrays are given out free of charge at the ticket offices, chair lifts, ski patrol huts and the tourist office. A day of picking up litter is also organised at the end of each winter season, in partnership with the Mountain Riders association.

The buildings of La Rosière are constructed using traditional materials to protect and maintain its village charm. An agreement has been put in place between the ski area in the summer and the farmers to divide the use of the pastures intelligently between tourists and agriculture. Obsolete structures are removed as necessary so that nature may return to its original state

The ski area of La Rosière is certified ISO 140001, which are criteria for environmental management. An environmental observatory unit has also been put in place to assemble and centralise all information as well as participating in decisions regarding the resort’s environment. Energy consumptions are controlled with modern installations that are rigorously maintained.

JULIEN EUSTACHE

Feestyle skier, director, Freeski Playoffs co-organiser, No. 1 - Snowfest, No. 1 - Winter Sport Festival

I’m 25 years old and I am a freeskier from La Rosière. My mother started me on skis at a young age, and once she saw I was comfortable and attracted by the challenges and rewards of freestyle skiing, it all grew from there. Succeeding in freestyle skiing means an enormous investment in time and energy, and it’s important to be available for sponsors and media as well as shooting as much film footage and photography as possible to create quality content. After a few years of competition at the World Cup level, I focused more and more on content creation, and have been filming and releasing ski movies with my own production company, JE-Films. I’ve been lucky to shoot with great riders both around the world and here at home, and always enjoy coming back home to the snow, sunshine, and good times of La Rosière, as well as my favourite the spot : Le Fort.

LOCAL

HEROES La Rosiere helps nurture and encourage young talents to fulfil their dreams, thanks to collaborations between Montvalezan Town Council, the lift company, the ESF, the electric company, the Ski Club and the Tourist Office. In return, these champions act as resort ambassadors, sharing photos and videos of La Rosière and helping a wider audience to discover the resort. During the winter, when they have time off from competing or filming, you might see Julien, Nathan or Luighi out on the resort’s slopes. La Rosière is their playground; they learned to ski on its slopes and were all members of the La Rosière Ski Club.

NATHAN GAIDET

Freestyle skier, member of the French Slopestyle team, many film segments in 2016

LUIGHI ROTTIER

Freerider, No.2 in the French Freeride World Qualifier, winner of the Saint Foy stage

30

I’m a 22 year old freeskier. My grandparents and parents are all from La Rosière, so you could say I have a bit of the resort in my blood! I love being able to ski across the border into Italy, especially because the cuisine is amazing: My favourite dishes are pasta with pesto and pizza with goat cheese & honey - crazy good! Other than the food, the other amazing things about La Rosière are the perfect snow conditions and constant sunshine. The Freeski Playoffs, the big freestyle event here in La Rosière, has really become the one unmissable event out of all the resorts in the area. If you can’t make it, make sure you check out the media coverage, and at the very least snag some of the cool branded socks. On powder days, you’ll find me in the Ecudets forest with Julien, Luighi, David, Jules, Max, Aristide, and Romain, or hitting up our other favourite spots like the Moulins face or Zittieux ridge.

I’m 25 years old and was born in nearby Bourg Saint Maurice. I started my ski career in downhill racing, but at age 17 I decided to shift my focus to my true passion, freeride. To me, big mountain freeride skiing offers an opportunity to enjoy the entire mountain with no limits or constraints. One of my favourite memories is a crisp morning in the Ecudets forest, with 100cm of fresh Champagne powder: It was so perfect and light it felt like I was flying, not skiing. My secret spots in La Rosière are dotted throughout the mountain, and I like hiking and skinning to access terrain that’s a little off the beaten path and to find the best snow. La Rosière is where I grew up, where my friends and memories are, and where I come back to recharge. Having skied all over the planet, I’m proud that La Rosière has managed to keep it’s soul and authenticity.

GOALS FOR THE SEASON

Produce a skiing film, like I do every year. Take part in and develop the Freeski Playoffs further. Take part in photo shoots for skiing magazines.

GOALS FOR THE SEASON

Continue on the slopestyle world cup circuit, promote the resort through various video projects especially a backcountry film, take part in events like the Freeski Playoffs and Farniente Banked Slalom.

GOALS FOR THE SEASON

Enter the professional Freeride World Tour. Enjoy myself while showcasing the best freeride and freerando spots in my photos and video segments.

Yvonne, where were you born? In Châtelard in 1949 at our family home, we were 6 brothers and sisters. I still live in the same house. All local families at the time had around 10 children each. What was Châtelard, La Rosière like when you were young? All the kids spent time together, there were no social barriers between us kids. We didn’t have much but we were happy; we skied, went sledging and prepared our own slopes! On Sundays we walked down to Montvalezan for mass, bought bread and walked back up. But that wasn’t all, in the afternoons we took our skis and hiked up to Les Eucherts just to ski back down. It was wooden skis that we waxed with soap. In school all the kids between 5 and 14 years were in the same class and all the kids from the valley knew each other. We all got together for the village festivals, for sports and competitions. Up to this day we still meet up at the “Fête des Clarines” or the “Fête des Bergers”, two local festivals. What was your childhood dream? I wanted to be a ski racing champion. I started competing at the age of 8, my brothers took me with a 2CV so that I could participate in races at Peisey-Vallandry, St Martin de Belleville and Sainte Foy. We didn’t have a coach at the time but set our own race courses. What about your career then, what did you end up doing? In 1956, when I was 16, I started my ski instructor training and I obtained the diploma in 1970. At the time, very few women taught skiing. I worked as a ski instructor in the winter and as a school secretary in the summer. I retired in 2015 when one of my old students told me that he was about to become a grand father for the third time… Do you feel that ski instructing has evolved since you started out? Yes, mainly in terms of equipment and teaching methods. You used to start learning to ski at age 5, now we have children as young as 3. The number of students per group was also higher then. Do you have children yourself? Yes, two. My son Joël made skiing into a career, he even won a silver medal in giant slalom at the Turin Olympics. Now he’s a coach for the French women’s team. My daughter Katy competed at Europa cup level and then coached the ski club in Courchevel. She has since come back to La Rosière to teach for the ESF ski school. We are about 20 instructors all together in the family. What are the qualities you value the most? Authenticity, simplicity and real connections.

YVONNE CHENAL “We waxed our wooden skis with soap”

How did you relate to the tourists that came to the area? When I was young and the first tourists from Paris arrived, we were skeptical and curious at the same time. We kept our distance at first and then slowly started making real connections. Once the trust was there, it couldn’t be broken. How do you unwind? A solo hike through the mountains, stopping only to enjoy a nice meal with a view!

32

THE ART OF

Chocolate We met up with Stephane Collomb, who is both the director of the La Thuile tourist office as well as Chocolat, an artisanal chocolate boutique.

How did the story of Chocolate begin? My father, who is from La Thuile himself, was working as a chef when a medical condition stopped him from continuing his work. We explored other options so that he would be able to go back to work and in the end we decided to open up an artisanal chocolate boutique. I was 14 years old at the time. Where did you learn the trade? I’ve been trained as a pastry chef in Italy and France by some of the greatest chefs out there. Your chocolate boutique has an amazing reputation, how did you achieve this? In 2009, La Thuile obtained the title “La Città del Ciocolatto”, the city of chocolate which really helped establish our reputation. Every 2 years in august we organise the Chocolate Festival. It’s a 3-day event where professional chocolateers gather and explore new flavours. In 2015, we were invited to participate at the universal EXPO Milan. Are there any specialties in La Thuile? In our shop it is the Tometta. It’s a dome shaped chocolate with toasted and caramelised hazelnuts. Over at the La Crèmerie pastry shop it is the 1441 cake, that has taken its name from the altitude of La Thuile. It is a cake made with ladyfingers, chocolate and a chocolate-hazelnut ganache.

The Freeski Playoffs is one of the highlights of the winter season. Some of the world’s best riders attempt to outdo each other in breathtaking displays of acrobatics, launching themselves over a huge jump created at the bottom of the slopes. Each skier will compete against another skier from the opposite team and the loser will be eliminated until one skier remains to win the competition. A fun atmosphere, music, cheerleaders and plenty of style, a spectacular event not to be missed! The competition will take place in March 2018, so keep an eye out on our Facebook page, exact dates will be announced a few weeks before the event.

TOUCH THE SKY CROSS-COUNTRY FOR ALL!

La Rosière has been a popular mountain biking destination since 2011, catering for all levels of rider and for all ages. Just like in the winter for Alpine skiing, all of the trails are categorised by level, from the easiest blue trails up to the most difficult black ones. The Roches Noires and Ecudets chairlifts transport riders to the top of all the trails. La Rosière’s MTB area, also known as the Bikezone is made up of five DH (downhill) trails (1 blue, 2 red and 2 black) and five XC trails (4 blue, 1 red, 1 black), from which you can drink in stunning views of the Haute Tarentaise Valley, discover the charms of Montvalezan’s quaint villages or adventure through the emblematic Ecudets forest. Some riders choose to explore the mountain biking trails on their own, either on their own bike or on one they have hired in resort, while others prefer to join a guided ride and benefit from tuition provided by the resort’s qualified MTB instructors.

Cross-country mountain biking is often considered to be an elite sport, but nowadays anyone can ride off the beaten track thanks to the advances made with regard to equipment and the appearance of electricallyassisted mountain bikes. A sport that was once reserved for experienced mountain bikers can now be enjoyed by anyone, meaning that groups of different abilities can explore the mountain trails together. So, whether you are an experienced rider or a Sunday cyclist, there is no excuse not to embark on an adventure around La Rosière’s fantastic network of MTB trails!

Craftmanship and heritage CHAT WITH GILLES MAITRE, WOODWORKER IN LE CHATELARD Can you tell me a bit about your trade? I’ve been a self-employed artisan since 1988. I work as a carpenter all year round, but I also help to clear the snow and maintain the resort’s footpaths, mainly because I enjoy working in a team from time to time. In summer, my son works with me and my wife takes care of the paperwork. What made you choose this trade? Woodwork allows me to make a living from my passion. At age 5 or 6, I was already playing about with bits of wood so I enrolled for a vocational qualification in woodwork, which cemented my love of the subject and my desire to make it my profession. In 1988, I became self-employed and worked all around the Haute Tarentaise Valley. Nowadays, I only take jobs in Montvalezan and the resort of La Rosière. My job almost exclusively involves house interiors: I make stairs, wooden cladding, handrails for balconies, furniture, etc. I’m often in my workshop, which is underneath my house, preparing pieces, cutting logs, planing wood down, drying it. My workshop is very constricted because of the mountain environment and the road, but I wanted to it stay on the mountainside and in the heart of the village so that I could maintain a connection with mountain craftsmanship, with the people. My machines are fairly new, but I would rather stay close to my roots than move to a larger, more spacious workshop on a trading estate. What kind of people do you work for? Most of my clients are the owners of holiday homes, and in recent years I’ve worked a lot on renovating chalets and apartments, which represents about 3/4 of my activity. What’s your connection with the resort? The resort is an important financial vehicle for local people. Its gradual, perhaps even slow, touristic development has enabled us to avoid any big mistakes but has also allowed the inhabitants of Montvalezan to be involved in this development. I’ve watched La Rosière expand - my father laid the foundations for the chalets in Le Gollet - and I’ve also worked for the ski lift company. Today, I’m delighted to see that the younger generations are choosing to stay in the area and are settling here. It’s a real asset. Much more than just a job, it’s a way of life… I have a fascinating trade. It’s a family-run business, I’ve stayed close to my origins [Gilles was born in La Combaz] and I am helping to preserve this authenticity. I’m currently renovating the roof of my daughter’s house in the traditional style. For me, it was second nature to decorate the joists with the owner’s initials and the date the joists were fitted, just like our ancestors did.

BAROQUE ART Look round the St Jean-Baptiste church in Montvalezan Montvalezan, the commune that incorporates the resort of La Rosière, boasts a wealth of cultural heritage for those who seek to explore it. Stop off in Montvalezan to look round its 17th century Baroque church, where you can admire the coats of arms, altarpiece and golden or multi-coloured wood. In summer 2015, the town council unveiled the newly-repainted church, which has given the chapel a breath of fresh air and showcases the Baroque paintings on the pillars and arches. Enjoy a relaxing walk around the church’s peaceful gardens. The church is not open at all times. Please see the Tourist Office for information about the opening dates and times. 54

THE ARPIN WOOL MILL Anniversary

200 years

LIVING HERITAGE The venture began in 1817 with the creation of the Arpin family workshop (Jean-Baptiste and Alexis) in the commune of Séez, on the banks of the Torrent du Versoyen, a stream that provided the workshops with electricity. Since then, the manufacturing process of their wool has barely changed: men and machines continue to perform the ancestral techniques that have made the wool mill famous for over nearly two centuries and more than eight generations. Originally, the Arpin textiles were used to make shelters for Alpine expeditions, for example the expedition led by Victor Amédée II de Savoie across the Petit-Saint-Bernard pass. With the development of mountain tourism and as the populations moved higher up the mountain, the Arpin wool mill began to design robust, comfortable, hard-wearing and waterproof textiles (Bonneval cloth) that were quickly adopted by the guides who led the first Himalayan and Polar expeditions (Paul-Emile Victor expedition). Closer to home, for the Albertville Winter Olympic Games in 1992, the mill made blankets and jackets for the Olympic Committee.

METICULOUS DESIGN The type of wool used is vital in the manufacture of textiles. It comes exclusively from sheep living in the pastures of the four surrounding valleys: Tarentaise, Beaufortain, Maurienne and Aosta. This wool then undergoes a specific and religiously-choreographed procedure: selection, manual sorting, washing, dyeing, carding, spinning, weaving, cleaning. In total, no fewer than 24 steps are required in order to make Drap de Bonneval, Etoffe de Séez, Tissus des Alpes, Muletière and Toile des Aravis woollen cloths.

Guided tours of the mill are organised in July and August: Monday to Friday at 10:30am, 1:30 pm, 2:45pm and 4:00pm. Prices: 5 €/ad and 3 €/under 12. From December 1st, please check with the Tourist Offices of Séez and Bourg Saint Maurice for organizing your visit.

HERITAGE IN THE SPIRIT OF THE TIMES Ever since its creation, the Arpin Wool Mill has made textiles suited to the harsh mountain climate. Today, this company has managed to diversify its activity into interior decoration and fashion, creating resolutely modern clothing using ancestral textile art. The Arpin Wool Mill is classed as an “Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant” (Living Heritage Company). This recognises the work the company has put in to preserve the ancestral methods, machines and production in France. And all this, just a stone’s throw away from La Rosière, in Séez!

THE

PETIT SAINT-BERNARD PA S S

At an altitude of 2,188m, the Petit-Saint-Bernard pass or Colle del Piccolo San Bernardo marks the border between France and Italy. In summer, it can be accessed via La Rosière by car, bike or on foot, and in winter can only be reached on skis via the Espace San Bernardo ski area. When you go through the pass you cannot help but be moved by the beauty of the landscapes, and soon learn that the site has been an important venue for some historic events.

56

PETIT-SAINT-BERNARD HOSPICE Thanks to its cross-border position, the pass has been considered a strong strategic foothold since earliest Antiquity: a site for discussions, a site for conflicts, and also a site for storms. It was back in the 11th century that Saint Bernard de Menthon, under the tutelage of the Aosta Valley, had the Petit-Saint-Bernard hospice built. A hospice was a religious house that welcomed in pilgrims. Over the years, the building has suffered greatly at the hands of history and the climate. In 1993, an association created by Jean-Luc Penna – the current Mayor of Séez – put the wheels in motion to restore the Hospice. A collaborative project run by this association, the interconnected communities of the Haute Tarentaise, the department of Savoie, La Thuile and the Ordre Mauricien led to the restoration of the building. Since 2014, the building has recovered its original mission as a place providing hospitality, although pilgrims have now been replaced by hikers, tourists and other travellers who choose to eat or spend the night in this building steeped in history. The Hospice also houses a tourist information point, providing information and documentation about the Haute Tarentaise, as well as temporary exhibitions. The Petit-Saint-Bernard Hospice is managed by Grégory Henri.

THE SAINT BERNARD DOG Their distant origins have been blurred over the years, but these dogs undoubtedly originated in Asia, as descendants of the Tibetan Mastiff. Gifted with a natural instinct for rescuing and guarding, they have an easy-going character and are great with children. Because of their size, they need a lot of space and like to spend a lot of time with their owner. Every day, these dogs eat between 750 g and 1 kg of dog food! A huge but adorable canine. Adopted by monks in the 17th century to act as guard dogs on the Grand-Saint-Bernard pass, Saint Bernard dogs were soon trained to rescue travellers. In 1963, on the Petit-Saint-Bernard pass, Mr. Clément set up home in La Chanousia to breed these dogs. But the difficult weather conditions pushed him to accept an invitation from Jean and Hélène Arpin to stay at the Relais du Petit-Saint-Bernard (La Rosière), where he continued to breed dogs.

LA ROSIÈRE: HOME OF THE ST. BERNARD ! In addition to being the home of several of these majestic dogs, every year (on the 1st weekend in August) La Rosière organises the Saint Bernard Dog Rally. Between 40 and 80 dogs travel to the resort to take part in this two-day celebration of the breed.

Today, in La Rosière, you can meet the resort’s Saint Bernard dogs, which are an integral part of the village’s iconography and history. Goya from Chalet Accroche Coeur, Boréal and Cybèle (opposite the Relais du Petit-Saint-Bernard and whom you can accompany on walks organised by the association in winter), and newcomers Loyd (who lives at the Hospice) and Lilou, often walking around resort.
