LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE EDITOR

This year, like few before it, the Museum and our community of members and friends had to pivot and navigate through the three Rs: Rain, Roadway construction and Rescheduling. Despite the challenges presented to our team, along with your support, the Museum did remarkably well! We had a very full season and to our surprise, Lawn Event participation of both registrants and spectators was quite good. Full support across the board, for which we thank you!

So, at the end of another summer and fall season out on the Great Lawn and surrounding areas of the Museum, we wanted to post up images, mostly crowd sourced from you!

During the autumn season, the Photo Club of Northeastern University attended Japanese Car & Motorcycle Day and graciously shared their captured moments with the Museum. The featured cover photo was taken by Ellie Early. Ellie is a Northeastern University Student studying Business Administration and Graphic Design, began photography in 2018 doing sports photography for her high school’s sports teams. She fell in love with capturing moments, emotions, and stories through images; from then on photography has been a big part of her life. She now pursues photography as a hobby and offers her skills to her community while continuing her studies.

About the Museum

HOME TO AMERICA’S OLDEST CAR COLLECTION

The Larz Anderson Auto Museum is located in the lavish and original 1888 carriage house located on the grounds of the former Weld Estate, now Larz Anderson Park, in Brookline, Massachusetts. The building was inspired by the Chateau de Chaumont-Sur-Loire in France and designed by Edmund M. Wheelwright, the city architect of Boston. First constructed as a working stable, it later served to house and maintain the Andersons’ growing collection of motorcars.

Larz and Isabel Anderson began their love affair with the automobile before the turn of the century. In 1899, soon after they married, they purchased a new Winton Runabout, a true horseless carriage. From

1899 to 1948 the Andersons purchased at least 32 new motorcars in addition to numerous carriages, thus creating “America’s Oldest Car Collection.”

As each car became obsolete it would be retired to the Carriage House. By 1927, the Andersons began opening the building to the public for tours of their “ancient” vehicles. When Isabel Anderson passed away in 1948, it was her wish that the motorcar collection be known as the “Larz Anderson Collection,” and that a separate non-profit organization be created to promote the mission of preserving the collection and automotive history. The

grounds of Larz Anderson Park include a romantic pond, a picturesque view of the Boston skyline just four miles away, acres of lush open space with walking paths throughout and an ice skating rink that is open to the public during the winter months. Today, the Carriage House is on the National Register of Historic Places. A landmark within the community and both a cultural and educational hub in the automotive world, it continues to house and preserve the fourteen motorcars that remain in the Larz Anderson Collection.

GEORGE KENNEDY EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

From open-wheel racecars to specialty off-road vehicles, George Kennedy has driven it all. A career automotive journalist, George has been a contributor, editor, and/ or producer at some of the most respected publications and outlets, including Consumer Reports, Boston Magazine, Autoblog.com, and Hemmings Classic Wheels. He helped start Cartender, an automotive marketing technology company, and is currently a contributor to the Boston Globe, U.S. News & World Report. He is also the YouTube host for CarGurus. com. Kennedy brings this breadth of knowledge and experience in compelling automotive content to the Larz Anderson Auto Museum.

JENN CORRIVEAU ART DIRECTOR

Every weekend as a young girl Jenn would accompany her “Car Guy” dad to Car Events around New England. So, it is only natural that her path would eventually lead to the Larz Anderson Museum where her primary work would become the Lawn Events Manager. While in college, Jenn studied Graphic Design. She found that she had a real passion for it in all of its forms. From photography, logos, branding to designing brochures or even crafting her own Wedding Invitations – Jenn loves to organize, curate ideas and make things pop! Her unique skill set and position at the Museum allows her to play an integral and important role in shaping the Museum’s image and message.

NATALIE HARRINGTON EDITOR + CONTRIBUTOR

Natalie Harrington is a Bostonbased motorcyclist, writer, and auto enthusiast. Raised in Syracuse, NY, and Bucks County, PA, Natalie relocated to Massachusetts in 2009 following her graduation from Wellesley College. She has been a LAAM member and volunteer ever since. More than any one marque or vintage, Natalie appreciates the joy and passion she sees in the car community. She believes there is no one right way to be a car person and loves that LAAM embodies that sentiment with its diverse community, varied collection, and long history of sharing its treasures with the world around it. Natalie recently earned a certificate in Professional Fundraising from Boston University and hopes to apply that to her role as a member of the Museum’s board. She loves attending car shows and races and visiting auto museums around the world, but thinks that LAAM’s unique community and collection top them all. She looks forward to spreading the word.

RYAN PHENEGAR CONTRIBUTOR

Influenced by a childhood surrounded with his father’s passion for modified German cars, Ryan has always had a love for all things German. Joining the Larz Anderson family in 2022, Ryan is the newest addition to our team. As a recent graduate from Bridgewater State University, he’s already making a name for himself as the go-to guy for all things audirelated. When he’s not tinkering under the hood or cleaning one of his cars, you can find him running car registration at all the Museum lawn events, ensuring every car is ready to go on the lawn.

MAELYNN HILL EDITOR + CONTRIBUTOR

MaeLynn was a stranger to the automotive world until 2013 when she purchased her first car, a MINI Cooper. That one car has opened a whole new passion that has continued to drive most of what she does. She has evolved from attending local car shows to now running her own events and traveling around the country to attend larger regional events and even internationally! MaeLynn still owns that same MINI Cooper a decade later along with a 1962 Classic MINI, a 2001 Mazda Miata that she autocrosses and a 2021 Harley Davidson Sportster. Over the past year MaeLynn has taken to photographing automotive events and meeting and sharing stories of the people she meets along the way. The cars are cool, but it’s the people that she has met along the way that have made her automotive career one to continue to pursue and cultivate into something more. MaeLynn joined LAAM as a volunteer and photographer in 2022 and has been coming back ever since. She has officially joined the team as Education Manager and looks forward to bringing her passion to this community in new ways.

ROB SIEGEL CONTRIBUTOR

Rob Siegel has written the monthly column The Hack Mechanic™ for Roundel, the magazine of The BMW Car Club of America, for 35 years, and writes weekly online for Hagerty and BimmerLife. Rob has also written for Road & Track, Sports Car Market, and Forbes, and is the author of eight automotiverelated books, including The New York Times-reviewed Memoirs of a Hack Mechanic. Rob has owned over 70 BMWs, most of them 1970s-era cars. He currently owns 13 cars including eight vintage BMWs and a Lotus Europa, and yes, his wife knows where all of them are.

JIM TRAVERS CONTRIBUTOR

Jim Travers is a lifelong gearhead, and a freelance writer, editor, and photographer specializing in all things automotive. A classic car enthusiast and collector, Jim is a regular judge on the car show circuit and is the author of the Smithsonian Institute’s Extreme Cars. His work has also appeared in Automobile, Autoblog, BBC Autos, Car and Driver, Cars.com, Car Talk, Consumer Reports, Hagerty, The NY Daily News, US News, and others. He lives in Duxbury, Massachusetts, a town known for both its beach and its dump. On weekends, Jim can often be found at one or the other.

ANDREW NEWTON CONTRIBUTOR

Andrew came of age around old cars and vintage racing, and first came to the museum through an internship while attending Clark University. He then served as the Education Manager at Larz Anderson while writing about cars both old and new for Sports Car Digest, James Edition and CarGurus. In 2014, Andrew joined Hagerty as Auction and Valuation Editor to cover the collector car market worldwide and contribute to the Hagerty Price Guide. Andrew has written hundreds of articles on classic car values, market trends and history for Hagerty as well as hosted webinars and attended dozens of auctions each year. He currently lives in Houston, Texas, but gets back to Larz Anderson as often as he can.

The 2023 Lawn Event season is in the books, and it was busier than ever! Since 1927, the Carriage House has seen countless lawn events and other automotive activities. Whether you are into British roadsters, American muscle, or microcars, there was

something this season for you. This year, the function was fashionable, whether it was one of the Kei vans at Japanese Car Day or one of the VW Bus examples at Transporterfest. As our hobby grows, so will the variety of vehicles that we’ll see at lawn events in the years to come!

Tom Larsen

Founder of The Anderson Society Museum Board Member and Friend

Tom Larsen was a beloved family man, a respected restaurateur, and a generous friend. He was also a devoted car enthusiast, an astute collector, and an avid vintage racer, and we at the Larz Anderson Auto Museum knew him best as a long-time champion of this institution.

Although he will be sorely missed, we know that thanks to Tom's leadership and his tireless efforts to establish and rally support for the Museum's endowment fund, his generous spirit and unflagging dedication will continue to benefit this community for years to come.

Charmed by Herbie HERBIE THE LOVE BUG IS NOW ON DISPLAY AT THE MUSEUM

At the current exhibit, Street | Rally | Race, there is one celebrity notable not for its motorsport history. Herbie the Love Bug is a special machine. There are many replicas meant to look the part, but this was one of the real Herbie cars used in the filming of the “Fully Loaded” sequel. The owner tapped into a Herbie chat group and asked if one was available. A number of people associated with

Disney participate in these forums, and so they were able to find him the vehicle he was looking for. Though he bought the car from Disney, they could not sell it to him with many of its hallmark “special” features that bring it to life. But the same chat group showed him how to hook it all back up, and now it runs through a computer on the phone. The doors open, the antenna flicks back and forth, lights flicker on and off, and the “eyelids” articulate. The Love Bug is on display now through April.

TUTTO ITALIANO

OUR ANNUAL CELEBRATION OF ITALIAN AUTOMOBILES

This year, one of the marquee lawn events, Tutto Italiano, had to adjust the date to late September which resulted in a perfect day of weather. Sponsored by Lamborghini Boston and Boston Motorsports, the day was a fun day for all who participated. “Tutto” brought forth full complements of cars of every class, and

not just from Italy. A non-Italian show-car area was home to a number of exotics, but it was the Italians that carried the day, Safi Barqawi's Lamborghini Huracan EVO, mid-engine Ferraris, and one of the larger assemblies of Diablos that you’ll find. But the real story was the people–the buy-in was massive, and so was the enthusiasm.

THE RACE AGAINST TIME

LAAM TRACK EVENTS IN THE 2023 SEASON

Perhaps you are inspired by the current exhibit to put your car through its paces? Whether you have built up your Miata into an autocross machine or you have a turn-key racer like a Porsche 911 GT3 RS, this year saw a number of fantastic track events, including Laps with Larz and AutoX

at Lime Rock. We’re elated to have fantastic partners such as Palmer Motorsports Park and Lime Rock Park to provide a forum for community members to put their vehicles through their paces and discover the envelopes of both driver and machine.

LET'S RALLY street race

In the entire realm of motorsports there is perhaps no other competition quite like a road rally. The term “rally” came into being in January 1907 from the first Monte Carlo Rally in France. What’s unique about these cars is that they were in fact designed to be driven on the street. Transformed through modification,

they become suitable to rally. The driver and co-pilot unite in the shared goal of navigating the road through grueling heat, freezing cold, ice, and snow in an attempt to drive one’s best. This collection of Porsches, Audis, Alpines, Ferraris, and a number of motorcycles is on display to celebrate this avenue of motorsport that is unlike any other.

PINETREE JAMBOREE With Eli English

As we enter the colder months, the celebration of the automobile moves indoors with a series of speaking events. One of the most recent was “Pinetree Jamboree,” a moving history, paying homage to the early days of hot rod drag racing and hosted by Eli English, who specializes in period-correct (pre-1953) hot rods. This was a time when cars were built out of what was on hand, with more backyard ingenuity than budget. Eli English was joined for Q&A by Gabby Goodwin, Alan Johnston, Bill Neergaard, Al and Bonnie Dyer, and JD Sweet.

FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

This year, the museum hosted a Family Day Open House event in February. In conjunction with the Highland Street Foundation, this was a day for the little ones to experience the museum like never before. Children enjoyed

stories about cool cars and helpful horses, building "race cars" out of recycled materials, and a puppet performance. We look forward to producing more events like this to help “pass the torch” and fan the flames of passion for the automobile in the generations to come.
