ABOUT THE MUSEUM

Home to “America’s Oldest Car Collection”

WELCOME TO THE CARRIAGE HOUSE

The Larz Anderson Auto Museum is located in the lavish and original 1888 carriage house on the grounds of the former Weld Estate, now Larz Anderson Park, in Brookline, Massachusetts. The building was inspired by the Château de Chaumont-Sur-Loire in France and designed by Edmund M. Wheelwright, the city architect of Boston. First constructed as a working stable, it later served to house and maintain the Andersons’ growing collection of motorcars.

Larz and Isabel Anderson began their love affair with the automobile before the turn of the century. In 1899, soon after they married, they purchased a new Winton Runabout, a true horseless carriage. From 1899 to 1948, the Andersons purchased at least 32 new motorcars in addition to numerous carriages, thus creating “America’s Oldest Car Collection.”

As each car became obsolete, it would be retired to the Carriage House. By 1927, the Andersons began opening the building to the public for tours of their “ancient” vehicles. When Isabel Anderson passed away in 1948, it was her wish that the motorcar collection be known as the “Larz Anderson Collection,” and that a separate nonprofit organization be created to promote the mission of preserving the collection and automotive history. The grounds of Larz Anderson Park include a romantic pond, a picturesque view of the Boston skyline just four miles away, acres of lush open space with walking paths throughout, and an ice skating rink that is open to the public during the winter months. Today, the Carriage House is on the National Register of Historic Places. A landmark within the community and both a cultural and educational hub in the automotive world, it continues to house and preserve the fourteen motorcars that remain in the Larz Anderson Collection.

JOHN DARACK

At age 13, John became the youngest member of the Larz Anderson Museum. Soon after, he purchased his first car, a Model A Ford, for $125 from an ad on the Museum’s bulletin board. Over time, John joined various Museum committees, eventually serving two terms as President of the Board of Trustees. John sees the Anderson car collection and Carriage House as uniquely original and unmatched in character anywhere else in the collector car world. He takes satisfaction in the preservation and growth of the Museum’s historical and cultural activities and special assets. He is especially interested in the Museum’s programs that appeal to younger people and families. Professionally, John rose to become president of Dirigo Spice Corporation, a food ingredients manufacturer that supplies the food industry with spices, seasonings, rubs, marinades and other specialty items. Now retired, John and his wife Marilyn reside in Wayland and enjoy spending free time in Maine.

In Memory of

Tom Larsen

REMEMBERING AN EXTRAORDINARY FRIEND OF THE MUSEUM

Tom Larsen was known to many in the automotive world. Even in the relatively small circle of people who love cars, Tom was exceptional, because he was not just a collector, or just a driving enthusiast, or just a concours regular. He was all of those things, with joy and passion, and he channeled that passion into a long tenure as one of the greatest champions the Larz Anderson Auto Museum has ever known.

Tom served as a Trustee on the Museum’s Board of Directors for years, dedicating many hours to bolstering the Museum’s offerings and safeguarding its independence. His time on the board was notable in part for the number of impactful ideas he brought to the table—few others have taken such a pioneering approach to their service. Tom was not someone who simply said, “things really ought to be this way.” He was someone who took action. When he saw an opportunity for improvement, he went after it: He rounded up supporters, rallied contributors, and persevered until the idea came to fruition.

One particularly important example of Tom’s determination to, as Gandhi would put it, “be the change you wish to see in the world,” is what we know today as the Anderson Society. Long before the COVID-19 shutdowns threatened organizations like ours, Tom envisioned a secure, self-sustaining future for the Museum that would keep it safe from the vagaries of public interest, natural disasters, and unforeseen dangers of any kind.

As a keen-eyed collector, Tom saw the value in the Museum’s preservation work: It is home to America’s Oldest Car Collection, a historically significant assembly

12 UPSHIFT

of single-owner pre-war autos. As an intentional nurturer of the hobby himself, Tom saw the value in the Museum’s educational mission: It’s able to reach and inspire far more new enthusiasts than any one of us can alone. And as a joyful friend to many, Tom saw the value in the community the Museum provides.

Tom believed an endowment fund could be the key to the Museum’s future security. He worked with his wife, Nancy Monahagn, as well as friends John Carberry, John Darack, Michael Kaleel, Denis Bustin, and Sheldon Steele, to establish a leadership giving community within the Museum’s greater membership. Tom was a talented “friendraiser.” He and Nancy hosted the first meeting of the Anderson Society in their own home, and they followed that by organizing an exclusive overnight MotoTour to court supporters. Their persistent efforts resulted in the successful establishment of the Museum’s endowment fund.

Tom’s discerning taste was evident in his car collection. His enthusiasm for life showed in his vintage racing. His love of community was obvious in his rally participation. And all of these wonderful qualities shone in his zealous support of the Larz Anderson Auto Museum.

Tom will be sorely missed and remembered, always, with deep gratitude and appreciation.

SIDEBAR

The Museum’s Board is pleased to announce the Tom Larsen Award for Distinguished Service to the Larz Anderson Auto Museum. The award will honor Tom’s many contributions to our community by recognizing his service and will allow his example to lead the way for others, much as he led the way with the Anderson Society Endowment.

The Path

From Volunteer to Trustee

ONCE A VOLUNTEER, CHRIS BENVIE IS NOW A TRUSTEE, SPONSOR, AND AN ANDERSON SOCIETY MEMBER AND OF COURSE, A FOREVER FRIEND TO THE MUSEUM

WINTER MAGAZINE 14

Chris Benvie grew up attending Larz Anderson Lawn Events with his grandfather, Jiggs Lucini, a Ford dealer who owned and ran Lucini Ford from 1929 to 2006.

“I became a car guy because of him,” says Benvie, who recalls visiting the Museum at least a few times every summer when he was younger.

It was also his grandfather’s influence that motivated him to pursue a career in the automotive industry. After 12 years at Cox Automotive, Benvie joined McGovern Automotive Group, which operates 28 dealerships in the northeast, as the Director of Marketing & Pre-Owned Operations. And, though neither Benvie nor his grandfather knew it during those summers, his time at the Museum would blossom into a career of sorts as well.

In 2009, Benvie and Peter Ladas of YuppieRacing co-founded Boston Cars & Coffee, and in 2012, they proposed moving the event to the Great Lawn at Larz Anderson. Museum leadership noticed how smoothly Cars & Coffee events on the property ran, and before long, Benvie was asked to assist with Lawn Events as well.

“I loved planning and leading events around cars, so it was a natural fit,” he says.

Benvie soon became an established member of the Museum’s circle of supporters, and Board members encouraged him to consider becoming a Trustee. The role, which requires not only financial support and a time commitment but also ambassadorship, was a natural fit as well. Benvie signed on Boston Motorsports Maserati Alfa Romeo, a part of McGovern Automotive Group, as a major sponsor of both Boston Cars & Coffee and the annual Tutto Italiano event. As an employee, he learned that McGovern quietly supports charities including Toys for Tots, Boys & Girls Clubs, and Boston College athletics. Benvie recommended the Museum as a philanthropic cause, and owner Matt McGovern readily agreed that it was a good fit for the business’s values.

“I look for people that I know either run a good, honest business or just are good car people who want to be involved in the museum,” he says of his efforts to recruit additional supporters.

Today, Benvie is not only a Trustee, but also a member of the Anderson Society, the Museum’s leadership giving community. He is still involved with Boston Cars & Coffee as both a sponsor and an organizer, and he still makes time to lend a hand for Lawn Events. Things are different now, though: He and his wife, Narine, welcomed daughter Mila in July of 2021.

Words: Natalie Harrington

Photos: David Adams (Cover) & Josh Sweeney

Becoming a father and raising a budding car enthusiast has added a new layer to Benvie’s appreciation for the Larz Anderson Auto Museum. This summer, he took a rare free morning to attend Porsche Day as a “civilian,” paying to register and show the Porsche 911 Turbo he recently acquired. Mila, who inspired his choice of the Porsche to replace the two-seaters he used to drive, loved every minute of the ride and the show.

“I just wanted to go and experience it like I used to when I was younger, before I was involved, with my daughter.”

And, as many have, Benvie found that sharing an otherwise ordinary Museum visit with his daughter transformed it into an experience he will treasure forever. In her delight, Mila called from the back seat of the Porsche, “I love you, Daddy.”

“In Boston, Larz is what car guys know and want to be a part of. When I’m old, I want it to still be around for my daughter and hopefully my grandchildren. It’s a sacred place in my book,” says Benvie. “If we’re not involved like we are,” referring to other young Trustees and volunteers, “there might not be someone else who will do it.”

The Cadillac Man

on a chilly, overcast afternoon in very late fall we set out from South Brookline to pay a long overdue visit to a collector car community legend. Who’s that? Well, unless you are a fan of vintage American cars and specifically Cadillacs of the 30s – 50s and slightly beyond that, the name may not easily ring a bell.

His name is John Gately.

John is and for decades has been one of a handful in the country who provide vintage and rare Cadillac parts to the

general public. Since the 1960s he has crisscrossed the US in search of rare parts and cars. His website boasts of over 50,000 Cadillac specific parts, mostly stored in his warehouse. In addition to warehoused parts and just adjacent to his shop sits his junkyard where they have stripped some 300 Cadillacs over the years.

Back to getting there. Along our route to Gately’s place, we passed through several layers of Boston’s architectural past. There was the Dillaway–Thomas House dating to 1750 along with a few structures predating it like the

stately First Church of Roxbury whose roots date back to 1632. On these grounds, an English clergyman named Thomas Weld became a Puritan and was the first pastor to minister to the English settlers of Roxbury. There were also rows of traditional large and small Boston style Brownstones along the way that rimmed the Fort Hill neighborhood that we passed through.

Upon arrival at John’s single story tan brick facility, we couldn’t help but notice that it stands alone architecturally, in sharp contrast to everything else. That’s because it is now engulfed by

18 UPSHIFT

new construction mostly of the low-rise commuter village variant that have recently arrived transforming, some may argue overpowering, Washington Street from Forest Hills Station in Jamaica Plain to the South End of Boston.

We rang the bell and were dispatched inside with the words “Come on in” and “Quickly. Close the door…don’t let the heat out”. Did I tell you that it was cold? Well, once inside it was toasty, bright and lively. John’s associate, Angel, was busy working on a ‘37 LaSalle while John untethered himself from sorting through a mountain of neatly stacked parts, presumably, looking for something that a customer was seeking.

He was visibly happy to see us and wasted no time beyond the usual pleasantries, touring us around the shop.

Decades of amassing car parts were clearly evident within these walls. Also impressive were the thirties era cars that sat in a tidy row in quiet repose as if patiently waiting for a warmer day to take a trip out, perhaps to the Museum for an easy drive and an afternoon’s visit with gathered friends. Each car a story.

Up a ramp and past a literal wall of skillfully catalogued Rochester, Carter, Stromberg and other carburetors we entered a door that led us to another room where there were mostly 60s era Cadillacs in different states of completion. Much too much to absorb in the time that we had allotted ourselves. A curious person could stay all day, if allowed.

Donning our cold weather gear, we ventured out and toured the bone yard where again, as if hidden in plain view, in

19

20 UPSHIFT
OUR FRIEND, THE MAN, JOHN GATELY Jenn Corriveau

the enveloping new urban skyscape now looming over it, we discovered well-ordered rows of Cadillacs “Rusting in Peace” as John is fond of saying and chock full of spares awaiting another turn to be further harvested for vital organs.

Behind all of this is a man clearly of a very singular purpose. Though we all have many facets and John no doubt does too, it is clear where the bulk of his thinking lies, for decades now. Ask him. He’ll tell you. He’s a Cadillac Man.

John has been a Brookline resident since birth, a car guy since about the same time and a regular presence at Larz Anderson Auto Museum events. Though he pays frequent visits to Larz, can you guess what event is his favorite?

In addition to being a member and participant at events, John has been a long-time consistent supporter of LAAM. He has said, “If we don’t, who will?” Even indicating that he has already established his legally documented intensions for a Planned Gift to help preserve the Museum for future generations.

Beyond the austere brick façade of the building, looking past the shop and cars of intrigue, the organized chaos of it all and the yard full of aviation inspired scoops, conical shaped bumpers, fins and chrome, we found our friend, the man, John Gately.

SUSTAINABLE GIVING

Takes Root with Anderson Society

With everything going on in our worlds—family, home, etc—charitable giving might seem like a daunting task, or at least a low priority. But if you have found your passion, and that passion calls the Larz Anderson Auto Museum home…there is always a way to get involved. Whether you volunteer your time (as covered in its own article in this issue), or donate your old car to the Museum, there are many ways to become a valued member of our community.

Sustainable giving is the process of regularly scheduled charitable donations of a fixed amount over a set time period. The benefits are in the name—this is a sustainable model for both the giver and recipient. For the recipient (in this case, the Museum), it allows that organization to plan around a set source of revenue. For the giver, it makes a seemingly sizable contribution an attainable component to your monthly budget.

A shining example of how this model works is Natalie Harrington, one of our youngest board members, contributor, and associate editor to UpShift. Natalie’s first experience with the Museum was back in 2010, at a Studebaker Day Lawn Event. “I distinctly remember my first sight of the Anderson Collection cars,” explained Harrington, “and this feeling of seeing where it all started. It felt like a rare and highly privileged glimpse of something remarkable.”

Natalie recalls making donations to the Museum even in college, as well as volunteering at Lawn Events. “Even if it was an early morning and I hadn’t really wanted to get out of bed to go volunteer,” continued Natalie, “Once people

22 UPSHIFT

started arriving with their cars, I always found there was a contagious spirit of joy.”

Natalie’s passion for the automotive genre and its hub here in Brookline led her to eventually become a Museum board member. A key component to her involvement with the Museum is as one of the early members of the Anderson Foundation, a charitable avenue for the Museum rooted in sustainability. According to Natalie, what made the Anderson society so attractive is because you can (as she puts it), “set it and forget it.” Natalie continued, “It’s a really easy way to give that has a disproportionately significant impact on the Museum.”

How is it that a smaller donation made regularly over time can disproportionately benefit a museum? Nonprofits are constantly wrestling with budgets. A reliable, regularly scheduled donation allows a museum to have a certain level of visibility for that budget, which is instrumental in being able to make well-informed decisions for the future. And Natalie has hopes for how that sustainable giving is put to work. “I’d like to see the Museum grow to new heights.” Explains Natalie, “I’d like to see it get the worldwide recognition that I feel it deserves.”

Whether it’s an enthusiast that sees the Museum as the hub of their passion, or a historian who recognizes and appreciates the Carriage House for its significance, there are so many reasons to support the Larz Anderson Auto Museum. For Natalie Harrington, there is a deep connection that nurtures her passions. In her own words, there is something powerful that comes from, “The sense of contributing to something that I find important but that I wouldn’t know how to address or execute on my own.” She concludes, “It’s a way of acting on a purpose that I don’t have the power to achieve, at least not readily, right now.”

WHETHER YOU’RE AN ENTHUSIAST THAT SEES THE MUSEUM AS THE HUB OF YOUR PASSION, OR A HISTORIAN WHO RECOGNIZES AND APPRECIATES THE CARRIAGE HOUSE FOR ITS SIGNIFICANCE, THERE ARE SO MANY REASONS TO SUPPORT THE LARZ ANDERSON AUTO MUSEUM.
23

Through her generous bequest, Isabel Anderson initiated what is now regarded as one of the most significant collections of historic cars in the Western Hemisphere. Since 1949, scores of other individuals have contributed in various ways to building the Larz Anderson Auto Museum into a vibrant cultural and educational institution that attracts and serves enthusiasts of all ages.
