Aloha! Here we are, welcoming the 2016 Las Vegas PRIDE Festival and Night Parade. With more than 25 events spanning 9 days planned, we hope there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Excited, anxious, nervous, and proud are some of the emotions I have been feeling as we get ready to host our two-day festival at Sunset Park on October 22 and 23. We are returning to the place where Las Vegas PRIDE started. Our festival footprint this year is three times larger than last year. We have planned for two entertainment stages, a dance pavilion, Kid’s Zone, a large food court area complete with food trucks and a PRIDE Pets area filled with exhibitors and attractions specifically designed to be petfriendly. Watch for new changes and great improvements. Check out the festival map (pages 28-29) for a preview of what to expect, and don’t forget, this year, you can bring your furry babies with you, just make sure to keep them leashed. KENNETH BLAKE Kenneth has been entertaining audiences from childhood. Extensive vocal training afforded Kenneth the opportunity to tour the country and parts of the world before the age of 15. Kenneth began his professional female impersonation career in 1991 and has gone on to hold the titles of Miss Gay Tucson America 1997, Miss Gay Arizona America 1998-99, Honorary Tucson Miss Gay Pride 2000, Miss Gay Western States America 2001, and Miss Gay National NCC USofA 2001. In March of 2004, Kenneth’s longtime dream became reality when producer Nobert Alleman asked him to join his Las Vegas production An Evening at La Cage, starring Frank Marino, where he resided until its close in 2009. You can now catch Kenneth as Madonna, Dolly Parton, Lady Gaga and performing his signature song “What Makes A Man, A Man?”, Thursday thru Monday nights at the LINQ Hotel and Casino in Frank Marino’s DIVAS Las Vegas. Kandy Makary originally from Cañada de Caracheo, Municipio de Cortazar, Guanajuato, Mexico, moved to Las Vegas in 2005 with dreams of a better life and to help her family. Kandy’s main goal and purpose moving here has been to transition to a transgendered individual; something that in her home country would not be readily accepted.

Jorge is known for his impersonations of many Latin artists. Jorge’s performances have made him a local crowd favorite in many Latin clubs and bars. Jorge’s hobbies include dancing, acting, and working out. Jorge is a lover of animals and nature.

Jorge hopes to help unite the LGBT community and remove the lines of race and color. Being Mr. Orgullo Latino Kandy stepped into the spot light and Las Vegas 2016 is a dream come true started her performing career in 2008 for him as he always dreamt of being at the famous Back Door Nightclub able to represent his Latin community with Pride.

And, in 2008 they married in Palm Springs. They are two of the most unassuming individuals that you would ever meet. But, to us, they are two of the most important individuals we can call supporters of The Center. We call them the “dynamic duo.”

Clair & Lyndon moved to Las Vegas in 2014 after Clair retired. One of the first things they did when they arrived here is that they both signed up to be volunteers at The Center.

Amid celebrating “Parasols in the Park,” this year’s Picnic By Design event on April 30 at World Market Center served as the backdrop to the honoring of Three Square Food Bank as it’s “Organization of the Year” and presented its “Volunteers of the Year” award to Clair Koetitz and Lyndon Marquez of Las Vegas.

Since then, they have become a vital part of an extensive network of community activists and volunteers committed to making a difference. Together they have joined others in supporting the efforts of such community partners as Las Vegas Pride, Golden Rainbow, and Human Rights Campaign.

“Clair and Lyndon stand out among over 270 volunteers at The Center. I’m so impressed that our corps of volunteers is, once again, a vital and valuable lifeline for The Center. I’m similarly thrilled that The Center will be honoring two individuals and an organization that continually make a difference in our community,” said Dimengo. “It was a thrill that many from our community turned out to give voice to the honors that we want to bestow upon these generous individuals.”

“When you ask these folks to volunteer, you always get a ‘two-fer,’” said Michael Dimengo, CEO of The Center. “Where one is, the other is.” Clair is a native of central Montana, retired from British Petroleum. Lyndon is from

that has not felt the positive impact of their presence and support. Having just celebrated their 8th anniversary, this dynamic duo is rarely apart, especially in their acts of service.

Pride Superstar Bob is a steadfast beacon of support for The Center, having accrued close to 500 hours of volunteer service at the information desk, in the ACT III senior program, and at many events. Bob is happy to serve whenever The Center puts out the call for extra help.

Chuck and Andrew are core members of the Las Vegas Human Rights Campaign (HRC) volunteer committee, who regularly rise to leadership positions in representing HRC while providing direct assistance to partner organizations all over the valley. They are even members of the HRC Federal Club, which helps to elect fair-minded candidates, both locally and nationwide. If Chuck and Andrew are not attending a fundraiser, you can find them serving food at the Las Vegas Rescue Mission or dressing as elves to bring joy to local families at Opportunity Village’s Magical Forest. In addition to being PRIDE Superstars, they have been recognized for their ongoing commitment to The Gay and Lesbian Center of Southern Nevada with their acceptance of the 2015 Volunteers of the Year Award. They were also granted the honor of participating in Golden Rainbow’s 2016 Ribbon of Life performance. Chuck and Andrew Stutz are pillars of our community and are an inspiration to all who know them.

Cindi has been a tireless volunteer for The Center’s ACT III senior program and lesbian groups, and has served as the friendly photographer at many Center events. A Pride Superstar, Cindi is passionate, kind, creative and talented individual, Cindi is tireless in her devotion to making the world a better place for all.

WHAT A WONDER, THAT WOMAN! (A TRIBUTE TO 75 YEARS OF WONDER WOMAN) By Paul Cieslewicz

I grew up watching the most “manly” TV shows possible. The Dukes of Hazzard, The Fall Guy, Riptide, even B.J. and the Bear were staples of our family’s viewing experience. I, on the other hand, longed to watch Lynda Carter do her signature twirl as she transformed into Wonder Woman. Of course, I was relegated to the occasional glimpse here or there, but never a full episode did I see. Wonder Woman first appeared in December 1941 in All Star Comics #8, and was created by William Moulton Marston. My first real exposure to her, however, wouldn’t happen until 1985 in the pages of DC Comics’ Crisis on Infinite Earths, a 50th anniversary comic book miniseries celebrating DC’s entire stable of superheroes. Unfortunately, in the final issue of the comic, Wonder Woman was caught in a blast from the AntiMonitor, which didn’t kill her outright, but devolved her back to the clay material that her mother, Queen Hippolyta, had used to form her in the first place. Scratching your head yet? I know I was trying to figure out what the hell just happened. Did I really just witness the end of a classic character that I waited years to follow in the first place?! It wasn’t until 1987 that DC Comics finally relaunched Wonder Woman in her own solo series, with the man who drew me into comic book collecting, George Pérez, at the helm as plotter

and penciler. His amazing art, which I had initially seen in Crisis, was on full display yet again for the Amazonian princess. Pérez even jettisoned a few of Wonder Woman’s eccentricities in order to make some things more sensible. She now had been gifted by the gods with the power of flight, for instance (no Invisible Jet here!). I was hooked! Actually, had it not been for a brief period where I did not pick up the series after Pérez stopped doing the artwork (I was in mourning!), Wonder Woman would’ve beat Suicide Squad as my first complete series that I had collected.

Years later I would finally meet my idol, George Pérez, at the Amazing Las Vegas Comic Con in 2014. As luck would have it, however, while I was able to find all of the issues of Crisis for him to sign for me, I was not able to locate the Wonder Woman issues in time. Sadly, they remain unsigned. Now, as Wonder Woman hits her 75th birthday, she’s making a splash in a big way. After being one of the few highlights of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Wonder Woman will finally have her own big screen adventure in 2017, becoming the first female superhero to have her own film (sorry Black Widow). The US Postal Service is honoring her by giving her her very own “Forever” stamp this October. Even the Invisible Jet has become part of the celebration, with a full size replica featured at this year’s San Diego ComicCon. And although Lynda Carter will not be seen in Wonder Woman (I still think she should’ve played Queen Hippolyta), she will return to television playing the President of the United States in Supergirl on The CW. While she has spent much of her existence being overshadowed by Superman and Batman, Wonder Woman’s time to receive the attention that is due her has finally come. Let’s see anyone (yes, even Cher and Madonna) look this good at 75. Happy 75th, beautiful! Here’s looking forward to your 100th!

Start your PRIDE weekend off with one of America’s only nighttime PRIDE parades, sponsored by MGM Resorts International. There are over 100 entries and more than ten thousand spectators. The annual PRIDE Parade has become the place to be and be seen for the Las Vegas Valley. The parade preshow will take place on the stage at 4th St. and Bridger Ave. commencing at 7pm with the parade starting at 8pm on 4th St. going north from Clark St. to Ogden Ave. We are also remembering Orlando at the beginning of the parade. To outsiders, we may be described as “colorful” (or “crazy”), but gay culture’s nature to creatively express is more than skin deep. This creativity of expression can be seen in so many elements of gay culture: drag, drama, dance, music, art, etc. As we come together to celebrate PRIDE for our LGBT culture, we are excited to include an area dedicated to creative expression at the Las Vegas PRIDE Festival! Let it OUT! Las Vegas PRIDE invites you to express yourself and share your art, talent, words, and emotions in our artistic expression installation at this

year’s Festival! We will have dedicated space for performances, vending of artistic creations (crafted jewelry, art, clothing, etc.), join us and add your contribution to creative expression! In addition to space for performance and craft, we welcome you to contribute to our We Are Orlando installation. This piece will stand in our Festival and will welcome creative contribution from our attendees words, thoughts, art - will be drawn onto its surface throughout the twoday event. Following the Festival, Las Vegas PRIDE hopes to find a permanent home for presentation of our community’s expression of their creative talents to express PRIDE for each other and our community! With two days to fill this is no small task, the Entertainment committee is working hard to finalize the lineup for the event and we will publish an online entertainment guide closer to the actual event, some of the current lineup is Chippendales, Human Nature and 53X. A video popped up on his Facebook screen and it was a LGBT group of spinners and then he realized that Las Vegas PRIDE does not have a color guard element in their parades. Edward reached out to the PRIDE Board and within a couple of weeks equipment, members, flags, membership forms, and music were organized. The Las Vegas PRIDE Spinners were born.

THE 2016 LAS VEGAS PRIDE PARADE GRAND MARSHAL, PHYLLIS A. JAMES Phyllis A. James is Executive Vice President, Special Counsel for Litigation and Chief Diversity and Corporate Responsibility Officer for MGM Resorts International. As Chief Diversity and Corporate Responsibility Officer Ms. James is responsible for leadership of MGM Resorts’ Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, including the Company’s diversity and inclusion, philanthropy and volunteerism programs and its Corporate Diversity and Community Engagement Department. Not only is corporate responsibility an anchor of our company’s character, values and culture, but today it is central to our employee engagement, customer and business expansion, and reputation growth. In her legal role she is responsible for management and supervision of Company litigation, including the coordination of outside litigation counsel. She also serves as a board member of, and special advisor and counselor to MGM Grand Detroit, LLC. Ms. James joined MGM Resorts in March 2002 as Senior Vice President and Senior Counsel, and then was promoted to Deputy General Counsel and Chief Diversity Officer in 2009. Ms. James is a member of the State Bars of California, Michigan and Nevada (inside counsel) and has been admitted to practice before Federal District Courts in California and the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Throughout her career she has been active in bar and civic affairs including work with the ABA Conference of Minority Partners in Majority Firms (founding member), the ABA House of Delegates, the State Bar of Cali-

fornia Minority Counsel Program, the State Bar of California Committee on Minimum Continuing Legal Education, the Legal Aid Society of San Francisco, and the Bar Associations of San Francisco and Detroit. In 1991 she received the Award of Merit for outstanding contribution to the Bar Association of San Francisco. She served from 1997- 1998 pursuant to appointment by Governor John Engler on the State of Michigan Trial Court Assessment Commission, and in 2000 cochaired for the State Bar of Michigan the President’s Special Committee on Anti-Judicial Speech. From 2003-2004 Ms. James served as a member of the American Bar Association’s Commission on the 50th Anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education. MTE will be looking forward to the moment where Las Vegas PRIDE Executive Director Ernie Yuen will announce the steps taken during the 2016 PRIDE parade. Stephan is positive that “Las Vegas can do the million steps”. All it takes is participants to login to MarchToEquality.org/login and share their steps in social media, using the hash tag #MTEatLVPride. All steps taken will be accumulated towards the Equality World Record that MTE wants to achieve in the next three years.

It takes 50 million steps to circumnavigate the Earth around the Equator. Las Vegas PRIDE takes on this challenge by inviting this year’s PRIDE participants to add at least 1M steps to the March To Equality campaign. The most expansive march in history supporting full LGBT equality is the brainchild of German Film and TVProducer Stephan Anspichler, pictured at right, who will visit Las Vegas PRIDE for the first time this year. “I can’t wait to get to Las Vegas and celebrate with the community. MTE is a fun initiative that anyone, anywhere around the world, can be part of. We are proud that Las Vegas PRIDE partnered up with MTE to demonstrate that we are one global family working towards universal Equality.”

MY STORY By David Hernandez

I grew up in a divorced family and was a raised by a single mother who gave birth to me when she was 16. My parents shared joint custody but the issue for who would have David this weekend or next week weekend was always a nasty battle. I spent most of my childhood being the go between for both parents who at the time were pretty much children themselves. In addition to this tumultuous period, I was also a kid that was interested in the arts like choir, band & theater. Needless to say, I didn’t really fit into what is was to be a “boy” according to social norms back then. I was teased a lot and barely had any friends until high school. All of this created issues within myself ranging from low self-esteem to insecurities to abandonment. But more importantly, back then I was gay and I just was afraid to say it.

Everyone that knows me, my friends, knew that I’m a gay. I have been comfortable in my own skin for a very long time. I decided to share it with the world for one reason. I had many younger LGBTQ fans around the globe that have messaged me over the years with their stories and their struggles. With my platform, I felt it my responsibility to share my story in hopes that someone, somewhere, would be inspired and maybe even change their lives. Why am I telling you all of this? People are hurting themselves and others because they are afraid to be who they are. Homophobia is still very much alive and thriving in the world and in the entertainment industry. For three years now, Las Vegas has celebrated pop music icon and LGBT favorite Olivia Newton-John at her critically acclaimed residency Summer Nights at the Flamingo Las Vegas. With a career spanning over 4 decades, over 100 million albums sold, four Grammy Awards, numerous Country Music, American Music, Billboard and People’s Choice Awards, an Emmy Award, ten #1 hits and more than 15 top 10 singles, plus starring in the most successful movie musical of all time, Grease, it’s no wonder she’s still “the one that we want.” Olivia’s show, Summer Nights, recently updated for Fall 2016, takes fans on a journey through her extraordinary life and career. eople often ask me how to be a better ally to the transgender and gender non-conforming communities. The first thing I tell them is try to put yourself in the shoes of a trans or gender non-conforming (GNC) individual. Imagine that the body you were born in is betraying you every day. Imagine the feeling that you were born in the wrong skin. Imagine looking in the mirror every day and seeing the wrong person looking back at you. That being said, there are some easy solutions to how to be a better ally to us: When you meet a transgender or GNC individual, never ask “What’s your real name?” When we tell you what our name is, that is our real name. Asking our “dead name,” or what our name used to be, is very shaming, uncomfortable and triggering. Our names have very personal meanings to us because we choose them to identify who we are, and they signify the start to a new life of being authentically real. What our name used to be doesn’t matter to us anymore and shouldn’t matter to anyone else, and it makes us feel invalid or not real. We are very real individuals with very real feelings, and our name is simply that, our name, no more questions need to be asked. If you’re not sure what someone’s name is, just ask, but don’t question it or our gender identity. It’s important to remember that if

someone that identifies as transgender or GNC, we’re revealing a piece of very private information about ourselves because we trust the individual we’re revealing that to. It’s never appropriate to misgender someone as the opposite gender than they reveal they are, just to make yourself more comfortable. When you ask a GNC person what their gender is after they’ve told you that they identify as gender non-conforming, again it makes their journey through gender invalidated. It’s always ok to ask someone what their pronoun preference is; we’d rather have you ask than assume. When we choose to reveal our transgender status, we’re telling you — not everyone else — in confidence, so don’t be a tattletale! It’s never appropriate to tell other people about an individual’s gender status, or how they identify, unless you’re correcting someone who is disrespecting that individual regarding their gender identity. Always remember, just ask, if we don’t want to tell you, we’ll let you know that we’re not comfortable talking about it. Another thing that is important to

being a staunch ally is to show your support! If you see someone making fun of a trans or GNC individual, say something! If you stand by and say nothing, you’re complicit in the transphobia that is taking place. See something, say something, and stop the negative talk about us. Challenging transphobia isn’t always easy, but in order to be a good ally, its critical and essential to not allow negativity showed towards us. Lastly and most importantly, treat us like we’re human, like we matter, like we’re just as important as anyone else, because we are. We’re real people with real feelings, real emotions, that are usually already raw from verbal abuse we’ve suffered along the way at the hands of someone that’s transphobic; sadly that often includes our family. Being an ally to the transgender community is critically important to our self-esteem and to our survival. This year, we’ve lost 19 individuals to murder in the trans community because of people that weren’t allies. Stand for us, and we will stand for you. q

SURVEY SAYS LGB YOUTH NEED OUR PROTECTION A

ccelerated action is needed to protect the health and wellbeing of our lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) youth, according to study results just released by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Findings from the report, Sexual Identity, Sex of Sexual Contacts, and Health-Related Behaviors Among Students in Grades 9-12, show that LGB students experience physical and sexual violence and bullying at much higher levels than their straight peers. The CDC discovered that LGB youth are significantly more likely to report:

Being forced to have sex (18% LGB vs. 5% straight) Sexual dating violence (23% LGB vs. 9% straight) Physical dating violence (18% LGB vs. 8% straight) Being bullied at school (34% LGB vs. 19% straight) Being bulled online (28% LGB vs. 14% straight)

These experiences can place LGB youth at substantial risk for series outcomes: • More than 40% of LGB students seriously considered suicide and 29% reported attempting suicide in the past year. • Sixty percent of LGB students reported having been so sad or hopeless that they stopped doing some usual activities.

• LGB students were up to 5 times more likely than other students to report using several illegal drugs. • More than 1 in 10 LGB students have missed school during the past 30 days because of safety concerns. The results above are based on results from two new questions regarding sexual identity and sex of sexual contacts in the 2015 National Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), the principal source of data for tracking health risk behaviors among U.S. high school students. YRBS does not tell us why we see such disparities between LGB and straight students, but CDC says other research suggests the differences could be due to social isolation, lack of parental or caregiver support, or not being perceived as being masculine or feminine enough. CDC’s Dr. Jonathan Mermin says, “We all can raise awareness of the urgent prevention needs of LGB youth. But we must do more. Many of our current efforts address factors that can place any young person at risk. More work is needed to tailor these efforts and programs to the specific needs of LGB youth and to further understand their challenges. The information in this report is critical to our work to ensure all young people experience adolescence without threats of violence or bullying and become healthy and productive adults.” q

Sometimes the child voices their own recognition of a difference in themselves to a parent, teacher, caregiver or trusted adult; other times it is beyond the child’s choice. This coming out time is full of fear and trepidation, as the child awaits a reaction and the witness to this life-changing event is forced to react or shut down. This moment, and the time following it, is pivotal. Life can get much better as families grow in understanding and support, or can fall to pieces as all involved struggle with fear and resistance. We want to be there for those families at this pivot point. We recognize the complexities in dealing with gender identity issues. We offer individualized services that encompass the needs of each person’s whole life circumstances and effectively address the individual’s internal and external struggles. Same sex marriage rights are in part the result of Gay Pride. When Pride parades, events, movies, parties and discussions happen, LGBT people are seen for more than just a caricature of who we are. We are seen as real people: mothers, fathers, sons and daughters. Funny, silly or serious we become more than just a shadow to be afraid of.

WHY GAY PRIDE STILL MATTERS

We call it Gay Pride. A series of events that happen in cities big and small that celebrates being gay in a straight world. It’s a powerful symbolic action that started after the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City when gays fought back against police brutality. Since then Gay Pride, which is usually the whole month of June, has expanded around the globe. This celebration of life, love and liberty isn’t just about parades and partying. It’s about the gay community being visible and belonging to a community, a town, a city, a nation and the world. It’s about spreading hope that not only are things getting better but things will continue to improve because we

The first time I attended a Pride Parade after coming out was a deeply meaningful experience for me. Walking in that parade wasn’t just about having fun; it was a declaration of personal self-acceptance. It was a declaration that I really was a part of the LGBT community and I didn’t want to hide it anymore. It was an amazing feeling to spend a whole day and evening hanging out with this mixed tribe of LGBT people who were celebrating being out and open about themselves. It was empowering. And today as I sit in Provincetown, Mass. enjoying a peaceful library space to write this post, I’m in awe of the community that has been created here. There’s pride in being out and open. Pride that comes from being able to hold your lover’s hand openly as you walk down the street. And in most of the USA, it takes a Pride Parade for LGBT couples to be able to do that.

But let’s not forget places like Russia, India or Uganda that have criminalized being gay or Gay Pride is about caring and doing anything that publicizes the responsibility. We do care for our community and we want to express LGBT lifestyle. that it is important. When ordained, Joel was closeted as Conservative Judaism then held that homosexuality was forbidden. A reversal of the traditional prohibitions was adopted in 2006 and, in 2012, Joel returned to JTS as the openly gay director of admissions for its fully inclusive rabbinical and cantorial schools. Joel has served in volunteer leadership with the Jewish GLBTQ.
