At Cox Communications, we’re proud to show our PRIDE!

A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Aloha! Las Vegas PRIDE 2019 is here kids! We have a lot of changes planned for 2019. Most obvious, is the PRIDE Festival location has moved! The new home of the 2019 Las Vegas PRIDE Festival is the Downtown Las Vegas Event Center just 1 block west (3rd St. & Bridger Ave.) of the PRIDE Parade Main Stage (4th St. & Bridger Ave.). This year, our entire 14-day celebration is centered around the 50th Anniversary of Stonewall. It is hard to imagine that the pride movement began just 50 years ago. We have a lot to be proud of! Save the dates! Las Vegas PRIDE is one week earlier and now on a 3-day weekend. October 11, NCOD (National Coming Out Day) is the date of the Las Vegas PRIDE Night Parade & Parade After Party, and October 12th is the Las Vegas PRIDE Festival. Lisa Vanderpump is the Celebrity Grand Marshal for our Parade. The Las Vegas PRIDE Festival will be open on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, the grounds are open from 5:00pm until 1:00am and on Saturday from 12:00noon to 1am. Tickets are available for both single and two-day admission. Presale tickets are on sale now! Please visit www. lasvegaspride.org for more details. A VIP area is returning to the PRIDE Festival. VIP tickets include weekend pricing for specialty cocktails, food and snacks, with entertainer meet and greets. The VIP area is located on a second level patio overlooking the entire PRIDE festival. I suggest that you purchase your tickets online, come to downtown early on Friday, get your weekend pride festival bracelet early, have dinner grab a couple of cocktails, watch the parade, and as soon as the parade is done, join us at the festival. Las Vegas PRIDE Pets and the Kid’s Zone are returning. There will also be great food, lots to drink, many retail vendors and exhibitors and some amazing entertainment. Friday night, starting immediately after the parade we have a great lineup of entertainment inside the festival grounds, so follow the end of the parade right to the entrance of the festival grounds. 12 | Las Vegas PRIDE Magazine

Las Vegas PRIDE Family Rainbow Bingo is also part of our Las Vegas PRIDE Celebration. This year’s event is sponsored by Cox Communications. Our most popular bingo event of the year returns to Alexis Park on October 2nd. Come early for a Pre-Party, open to all paid Bingo players, from 5-6pm. The special pre-party will have complimentary food and fun. Don’t forget to save yourself a seat for Bingo! Daubers go up at 6:30pm! Watch for lots of great prizes at this bingo including a large flat-screen TV. A special Naughty & Kinky Bingo will also be held at Hamburger Mary’s on Thursday, Oct. 3rd at 8pm. Consider yourself warned, this isn’t your typical Grandma Bingo and is age-restricted to 21+ only. Friday, Oct. 4th at 10:30pm is our Turnabout/PRIDE KickOff Party at Hamburger Mary’s. Sunday, Oct. 6th is our opening Temptation Sundays Pool Party at the Luxor Hotel from noon to 4pm. On Tuesday, Oct 8th, please join us at Hamburger Mary’s as we showcase the winners of Las Vegas PRIDE Idol 2019. You’ll get a little tease of their performance coming to the main stage at the festival. On Thursday, Oct 10th, we are hosting a very special Las Vegas PRIDE Pet Charity Bingo at Hamburger Mary’s; all proceeds will benefit 5 different pet-focused nonprofit organizations. On Sunday, Oct 13th, join us for Recovery Gospel Brunch hosted by Miss Coco Vega at Hamburger Mary’s. Our PRIDE Festival Host, Jenifer Warner, and our Miss Las Vegas PRIDE 2019, Alei’Aloha Savage will be the special guest performers. Reservations are suggested. The Down and Derby Skate Party will close out our 14-day celebration. The 21+ Skate Party includes a Halloween costume contest with lots of prizes. The fun starts at 10pm at the Gold Spike. We still have many events to add to our list, many are still in the planning stages and will be announced on our website once everything is confirmed. For more information please go to www.lasvegaspride. org for more details. A full list of events will be posted on our calendar. Thank you to all of the volunteers helping us with our PRIDE events this year. Please be safe, have fun, celebrate Las Vegas PRIDE, and please be nice to one another. In PRIDE! SUMMER, SEX, & STDs By Nick Martinez

Clark County has been rated one of top counties in the US for contracting STDs. According to the CDC, Clark County has been rated the number one county for Syphilis in the US. HONESTLY I never thought of HIV as an STI STIs are sexually transmitted infections that can be passed from one person to another through sex. Syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhea, and even HIV are all STIs. If you’re having sex, get tested to know your status, use condoms and lube, talk to your partner(s) about sexual health, and if you are HIV-negative, ask a healthcare provider about PrEP. Talk to a healthcare provider and learn more about your HIV prevention options at

People are unique in their own ways, and like everyone’s fingerprints, no two people are the same. This leads us to interpret things differently, apart from one another.

believe it’s important to listen, discuss, and reflect upon where we’ve come from and where we are, then look to the future and see where we want to go collectively. Our history is like a fable that will be told to generations to come; like a time, capsule in the form of words. The story we tell, to remember and educate is mine and YOURS.

Last year, I asked myself after another year of LGBTQ+ Prides across the world, “Stephan, what does Pride mean to you?” Well, I will share with you what I discovered, but please, share with me what Pride means to I is for Inclusion: Pride means leaving none behind. you too! E is for Educating:

Pride is a feeling you get when your educating people on your true feelings. It is a very diverse world we live in; we are all so different and that is what the LGBTQ+ community is about.  We can’t seem to comprehend why other people don’t share our views, or we just don’t want to figure it out. Maybe we just don’t truly understand we are all different? Just like letting blue and red strongly divide us brings out nothing good inside of US.  If anything, I hope most of us can agree to disagree. More people come into the LGBTQ+ community every day, whether it be to support the community, to “come out,” or just to celebrate. Once we gain their support, I think it is important to sit down and have those conversations to educate people on who we are and what we are about. After all, #WeAreHumanity   As I said, Pride can mean so many things, but that best sums up how Pride is defined in my mind. Please let me share what Pride means to all of US! Please send what Pride means to you at Pride@ PrideTourGuide.com, and your piece could be selected to be published on www.PrideTourGuide.com. Peace, Pride, and Love to you all! A DAY WITHOUT LESBIANS IS A DAY WITHOUT SUNSHINE BY JOSLYN HATFIELD

October 8th marks International Lesbian Day, (yasss honey it is a thing). The worldwide celebration of ladyloving ladies originated in Australia and has gained momentum in regions outside of Oz over time. The holiday differs from Lesbian Visibility Day (celebrated in April) which focuses on combating the systemic erasure of lesbians from within the male-dominated LGBTQ+ activism community and media.

Emily O’hara of Out, “the creators at major queer media outlets authored an open letter slamming the message these so-called lesbian publications are sending to trans women and to young lesbians — including trans lesbians — and we want to make it clear this is not in our name.” After Ellen Editor-in-Chief Memoree Joelle countered the statement in an open letter stating, “Being an ally should not require lesbians to deny their own reality. It should not require lesbians At the core, both days share a theme to relinquish all autonomy, to believe of identity. It was lesbians who cared for our gay brothers when few others would during the onset of the AIDS crisis. And, it was a lesbian (Ellen DeGeneres) who changed everything when she came out to 44 million viewers in April of 1997. To be clear, a celebration of lesbians does not automatically imply transexclusionary radical feminist lesbian (TERFL) ideologies. The number of inclusive spaces where authenticity is valued (even exalted) continues to grow. Recognizing the contributions and identity of one identification in the community simply does not have to threaten another. We can celebrate lesbians without rendering the identities of Trans women invalid. It really is that simple. The future for lesbians, is (and must be) intersectional.

Catching Up With Mr. & Miss Las Vegas PRIDE 2019 By Ernie Yuen, Las Vegas PRIDE Executive Director I had the pleasure of interviewing this year’s Las Vegas PRIDE Royalty for 2019, Alei’aloha and Deejay Savage. Having the opportunity to share something truly unique within a community, is not something everyone gets the chance to accomplish or experience. I caught up with the married couple Jonah and Deejay Labayan-Arvelo to get a brief insight from them.

and commitment to reign as a family. Deejay also wanted to have something for their daughter to look back on when she gets older. They said it’s important to show their child that their family represented a common goal for an entire community. Unity,

Jonah, AKA Alei’Aloha Savage, has always dreamt of one day representing the city of Las Vegas as Miss Las Vegas PRIDE. He started doing drag in April of 2012. He became the drag daughter of the beloved Tracy Savage AKA Kalani one of my best friends growing up in Hawaii. Sadly, Tracy passed away in November 2012. She was in preparation to be crowned Miss Las Vegas PRIDE 2013. As many of us were distraught with her passing, Jonah was crushed. He made a promise to Tracy that he would make her proud in his journey as Alei’Aloha Savage. Performing at many local venues and some out of state venues, Jonah has been perusing the art of drag ever since. He enjoys creating art through movement and the exploration of passion with self-awareness. Like many others, he also loves to share the art of drag with other people. He works in the day time as a federal employee and is a loving husband and father. He feels very proud to represent the city of Las Vegas in honor of Tracy Savage (R.I.L.) and those who have supported him through his drag career. As for Deejay, becoming Mr. Pride was actually not something he has Las Vegas PRIDE Magazine | 61

acceptance, and love. Deejay says that being Mr. Las Vegas PRIDE 2019 is a new challenge that will definitely be a proud moment in his life. Their daughter Anuhea was born in April 2015 in Houston, Texas. Both Jonah and Deejay are her biological parents. Of course, they get the standard questions... ‘’ So, who’s the real dad?” “Was she adopted or was there a surrogate?’’ They answer the question based on who’s asking. The true answer is Deejay is a transgender male. He says that perhaps being trans was a hidden gift brought to them. Many gay couples have to jump through hoops and boundaries to have children. Rarely are both parents biological to the child. However, “Having a trans identity is only a secondary element in our family, it is not something that is heavenly fixated upon’’ says Deejay. “Being trans or being a drag queen is irrelevant when you’re just a normal loving family” says Deejay. When the Las Vegas PRIDE board asked the couple why they wanted to be PRIDE Royalty. They confidently responded that they agreed to identify and be visible for anyone who is like them... or anyone who strives to achieve the same goals. They have shared their story on a number of different media platforms, and a lot of that activity has led them up to this point. They explained to us, that in the world today, they notice every time people turn on the television, or open up their favorite social media page... they see mostly negativity. Unfortunately, most of the worldly drama is pertaining to the lack of acceptance by people everywhere. Jonah and Deejay say, ‘’There is violence and hatred everywhere. We want to share another demographic within our life experiences. We identify with the people, because we ARE the people. We are your postal worker, we are the parents next door, we are your local watering hole security man, 62 | Las Vegas PRIDE Magazine

They represent the city of Las Vegas and leave us with a quote. ”If we could give our children 3 things, it would be the confidence to always know your worth, the strength to chase your dreams, and the ability to know how deeply loved you are.’’ And it can be said that they wish these things upon everyone and anyone. They don’t want to share thier stories based only on experiences, they want to share a story that investigates what it is to be human. The last time I talked to Tracy, I made a promise, never in my wildest dreams, had I known this would ever take place. Truly a blessing to everyone they meet and the hearts that they touch. Love comes from the inside and you can see that with Jonah, Deejay and Anuhea. I love you! XOXOX Papa

Businesswoman, TV personality, author, and philanthropist, Lisa Vanderpump hails from London, England. Lisa and her husband Ken Todd have been entrenched in the restaurant and nightclub industry since they started their partnership over 30 years ago. Their four very successful restaurants and bars in Los Angeles are just a peek into their joint ventures. Lisa Vanderpump has most recently become known for the hit Bravo TV series, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. Her unique mix of sparkling glamour and down-to-earth style has appealed to thousands of viewers. Fans can also catch Lisa on her spinoff show Vanderpump Rules, of which she is an Executive Producer, which centers around her West Hollywood eatery SUR, as well as her Beverly Hills favorite Villa Blanca, and gorgeous 70 | Las Vegas PRIDE Magazine

culinary endeavor PUMP. Vanderpump Rules’s success has been touted by the New Yorker, The New York Times, Time Magazine and more, and led to its own spinoff, Vanderpump Rules: Jax & Brittany Take Kentucky, which Lisa also Executive Produced. In 2018, Lisa opened Tom Tom Restaurant and Bar, with junior partners Tom Sandoval and Tom Schwartz, from the cast of Vanderpump Rules. The latest addition to the Vanderpump empire is Vanderpump Cocktail Garden, at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Lisa also competed on the ABC hit show Dancing with the Stars in 2013 and was featured in the Lady Gaga music video for “G.U.Y.” in March 2014. In 2017, Lisa was named Editorin-Chief of Beverly Hills Lifestyle Magazine, one of the world’s leading luxury publications, and helmed the publication for over a year. On top

of this endeavor, Lisa’s brands have included her own “Vanderpump Beverly Hills” tabletop collection, the “Vanderpump Estate Jewelry” Collection, a pet accessories line at VanderpumpPets.com and a soon to be released fine jewelry collection. Lisa also has her family’s signature Vanderpump Vodka, Vanderpump Rosé and LVP Sangria in retail and on-premise outlets both domestically and internationally. Most importantly, Lisa’s philanthropic ventures are extremely close to her heart. In 2016, Lisa and her husband Ken launched The Vanderpump Dog Foundation to help end animal abuse on both an international and domestic level, which opened the doors to its first rescue and adoption center in 2017. Currently, the 501(c)(3) nonprofit Foundation has adopted close to 800 dogs in the U.S. to their new forever homes. In October 2015, Vanderpump organized a peaceful protest march against The Yulin Dog Meat Festival and launched StopYulinForever.org, starting a movement to end the abuse, torture and slaughter of dogs worldwide. Lisa went on to address Congress about the same issues and produce and release her documentary, The Road to Yulin…and Beyond, which covers the last two years of The Vanderpump Dog Foundation’s mission trips to China, to expose the torture that occurs during the annual Yulin Dog Meat Festival. The film gives an in depth look at the horrific and brutal interactions that dogs face in parts of the world that have an unrestrained dog meat trade. The Documentary held its World Premiere at the LA Awareness Festival, where it subsequently won the Audience Award, and is now available on Prime Video. Recently, Lisa was thanked on the congressional floor by Congressman Alcee Hastings (D-FL) for her aid in helping pass House Resolution 401, a formal condemnation of the dog meat trade by the United States.

Lisa and husband Ken have been steadfast advocates for the LGBTQ community for many years. Lisa is a spokesperson for GLAAD and has worked closely with the Desert AIDS Project, The Trevor Project, and the L.A Gay & Lesbian Center helping homeless LGBT youth. Lisa was a recipient of the Ally Leadership Award from Equality California, an LGBT rights organization, in 2015. Lisa has also conducted fundraising for Susan G. Komen in honor of October’s Breast Cancer Awareness month, and recently led the 30th annual AIDS Walk Los Angeles, cutting the starting ribbon for over 25,000 walkers. In addition, in 2015 Lisa was named Monarch of the Krewe of Orpheus

Mardi Gras celebration; addressed the United Nations Concert for the EBOLA effort; and was recognized by the State of California Assembly as “Woman of the Year.” Lisa and Ken have been married for 36 years and have two children. Lisa has a great passion for life and she has tried to instill that in her children; Pandora, 32, and Max, 26. As Lisa said, “I’ve really adored being a mother; but my children have grown now, so I’ve filled my nest with 7 four-legged furry friends. They are the loves of my life.” Lisa and Ken currently reside in Beverly Hills with their 2 miniature ponies, 7 dogs, 7 swans and a variety of other animals. Las Vegas PRIDE Magazine | 71

LAS VEGAS GAYMERS By Andrew Jenkins

Tears for Fears famously told us in 1985 that “everybody wants to rule the world.” But the truth is, not everybody wants to rule the world. Some want to create it, some want to save it, and some want to destroy it. Gamers do all that and more.

that “gay gamers experience a double edged sword of prejudice... The mainstream gay culture and media is not supportive of video games. Then you have the video game culture that is not supportive of gay culture. So you have these people stuck in the middle who have this double-edged But as visibility for LGBTQ* people prejudice.” increased in other forms of media representation, such as movies, TV, But thanks to passion, community, and comics, in video games their and a silly social media post, gaymers visibility was stagnant until the in Las Vegas have a place to call home. birth of the “gaymer” movement Or base camp. The study noted that LGBTQ* gamers The idea started, they said, when faced multiple facets of judgment they were “noticing an uprising of not only from the gaming world, but these small location-based gaymer in queer culture itself. In the study, communities, primarily on Reddit. I sociologist Alexander Sliwinski states remember seeing the group pictures

like ‘LA Gaymers!’ ‘NYC Gaymers!’ And I posted a sad picture of myself with the title ‘Las Vegas Gaymers!’ which actually got a bit of attention from other people saying they were also in Las Vegas. The realization hit me that there was a community here waiting to be brought together.” Winsatt, 25, who says their current obsession is The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, says the group has expanded their gaming interests. “From the more mundane ‘Hey, buy this cheap game on Steam and play with me!’ to a more official ‘Try out this brand-new board game and post it on your social media’ to a general ‘What’s everyone playing right now?’, the existence of this group has expanded my interests in ways I can’t even fully describe.”

The group draws in not just LGBTQ* video gamers, but table-top, board, and card game players as well, as tournament coordinator Tim Avist has learned. The 31-year-old Vegas resident said his love of fighting games got him involved. “I was getting annoyed with the lack of rotation in games,” he says, “and could see less people playing as time went on because with the lack of rotation usually the same people were winning.” Avist took to the helm, starting with tournaments at The Phoenix, a bar becoming known for their gaymerfriendliness, offering bar tabs and Amazon gift cards. Today, his

tournaments have gone beyond bar tabs to finding a spot with the Sin City Classic, the annual LGBTQ* sports competition hosted in Las Vegas every year.

The sentiment is shared with Winsatt, who touts inclusivity as the thing that sparks the love for the group. Says Winsatt, “Our members create real lasting friendships, and while the intent of the group is not a match making site, I have seen so many happy relationships blossom from this group, and that’s something really special to get to watch happen.”

Avist says the group of gaymers has made him more confident in himself. “Until I started with the tournaments,” he says, “I barely talked to anyone, and would even tend to stay in the back and seclude myself. he was looking for a new social circle. “When I discovered there was a gay gaming group in the city, I was excited there were others who shared my interests, because something like that did not exist in Utah,” recalls Jenkins. “I nervously attended my first event, and after waiting a short while for people to arrive, a member recognized me from the introduction post I had made on Facebook and greeted me. I knew after that night I had found the right group of friends for me.” Jenkins, who says he is “perpetually playing” Civilization 6, plans and organizes the majority of the group’s events with the help of the rest of the administrative team, as well as keeps track of finances and addresses issues that arise. “However,” he says, “I feel my main responsibility -- and my most favorite -- is meeting all the wonderful, diverse people who join our community. I love getting to

How different? “I literally would not be who I am today without this group,” says Jenkins. “Every aspect of my life has been positively impacted by them. I have had and currently live with roommates I met through the community, and I see many others on a regular basis. I have no idea where I would be without them.”

Gamers have multiple journeys -saving the world, pilfering priceless artifacts from caves, vanquishing evil. Thanks to this group of local gaymers, more people are enjoying the one journey most try to escape from: life. “We are friendly, inclusive, and fun!” says Jenkins. “Everyone is welcome, even cis heterosexual allies. ZUMANITY

Zumanity is a provocative cabaret-style production with a Cirque du Soleil twist. In 2015, Cirque du Soleil introduced new sensual surprises to Zumanity including choreography by Yanis Marshall, erotic aerial acts, costume by French designer Thierry Mugler

Zumanity celebrates its 16th anniversary on September 20. To mark the event, we invite you to explore its anatomy and learn more about the show. So here it is—the anatomy of Zumanity.

Zumanity is inspired by infinite individuality and variety—a concept embodied by its artists, who come in all shapes, sizes, ethnicities and genders.
