The pink triangle was originally used to denote homosexual men as a Nazi concentration camp badge. The AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT-UP) adopted the inverted pink triangle to symbolize the “active fight back” against HIV/AIDS “rather than a passive resignation to fate.”

The lowercase Greek letter has symbolized the LGBT community since 1970, when the Gay Activist Alliance selected it to represent the gay rights movement. Some believe the “l” stands for “liberation.”

BY SARAH MITCHELL

A LAS VEGAS IDOL

MIKALAH GORDON Musician, comedian, and actress Mikalah Gordon was born and raised here in Las Vegas. She began singing when she was only two years old, and started performing in shows in different hotels at a very young age. Growing up in Vegas she was exposed to a multitude of different types of people and different types of stages to perform on. Her biggest musical inspirations growing up include Amy Winehouse, Billie Holiday, and Janis Joplin. Mikalah loves to perform songs by these artists. These songs also happen to be perfect songs to really

showcase just how powerful her voice and range are. Due to the fact that she started her singing career at such a young, when she auditioned for American Idol at only sixteen years old, she felt right at home. She always knew that she wanted to sing and entertain. She not only received a golden ticket for Hollywood week, she advanced all the way through to the Top 11. During her time on the show she performed songs such as “Young Hearts Run Free”, “Love Will Lead You Back”, and “God Bless the Child.” YOUR GUIDE TO LAS VEGAS PRIDE 2019

When asked about her time on American Idol, and some of the takeaways she had, Mikalah responded with, “I think that, honestly, anything is possible. I was so young, I had literally just turned sixteen and there were so many reasons why I couldn’t have made the show, but I never believed in those. I really knew I could do it and once I did it, I felt like there is no way anybody can tell me no. If I want it, I put my mind to it and its mine.”

into a new type of TV show, comedy. She was asked to be on Living with Fran, starring Fran Drescher, who just so happens to be her comedian icon. Being Italian and Jewish, Mikalah felt like Fran was the best representation to see herself on television. She says that getting the call for the show was the best day of her life. She recalled, “I was so excited and, truly, it’s still one of the biggest highlights of my career. I would love to reboot The Nanny. I would die to be able to revise that role for her! comes to struggles in her career due to her sexual orientation. Her mom and grandma both identified as lesbian so it really wasn’t a big deal to her family when she came out. They were extremely accepting of whatever made her happy. In 2019 it is easier to be out than it was 15 years ago, which was a time where Mikalah was not yet out. For the most part people have been really accepting of her sexual orientation in her entertainment career. Sometimes she will receive the nasty Instagram messages, but the positive

overwhelms anything else. She does acknowledge though, that not all people are this fortunate. There are still so many families that don’t allow their children to live their life and don’t speak to them. She hopes other people will be more like her family and show the kind of the acceptance that she received. She just celebrated her four-year anniversary with girlfriend Lisa Pittman who is a prominent DJ here in Las Vegas. Lisa also DJs for the new LGBTQ+ radio station,

Channel Q, where Mikalah hosts a morning show called “The Morning Beat” with her cohost Jai Rodriguez. Channel Q came out of an Entercom Radio innovation team meeting during the Spring of 2018. The creators asked themselves what was missing from the current radio landscape and discovered a need for an audio platform for the LGBTQ+ community and our allies. It’s their goal to offer the community a place to turn to on a daily basis to hear topical discussions through both an LGBTQ+ and progressive lens. Mikalah loves everything about this station. It’s the first LGBTQ+ radio station on FM nationwide, and it’s really all about giving everyone a voice. It’s for LGBTQ+, but also for our straight allies who, in her words, we love and need. This is an immense platform for people to be able to talk about things that are happening within the community. It’s a safe place for anybody who needs a home, whether you’re gay or straight. You just have to be openminded and loving to everybody. Here is one thing Mikalah had to say about Channel Q: “I want people to understand that we talk to LGTBQ+ youth who have been kicked out, been sent to conversion camps, and really have no place to go. I want everyone to remember that.” Though Channel Q broadcasts coast-to-coast, the fastest and easiest way to connect and take them anywhere is to download the radio.com app then 50

just search for Channel Q. They play a wide variety of pop, dance, and EDM artists, both from the LGBTQ+ community as well as straight ally artists. With it being the 50th anniversary of Stonewall this year, Mikalah really wants people within our community to remember how important our Trans community is, especially our black trans women. There have been five deaths this month alone of black trans women. When we celebrate Pride, she wants our community and straight allies to remember that it was our trans brothers and sisters who threw the first bricks at Stonewall. “I don’t want them to be forgotten. I want to make sure they are feeling the love with us during pride,” Mikalah told me with such passion in her voice. Mikalah Gordon is a magnificent artist who is leading the way for aspiring entertainers. She hopes to encourage people to believe that anything is possible, and to remember to show love to everyone in the community. SUMMER, SEX, & STDs By Nick Martinez

This hashtag for the year is #FunintheSun. But when does it become too much fun? I’ll tell you, it becomes too much fun when you have to go to your local Health District to get a shot in your ass or a two pill antibiotic because you were having too much #FunintheSun, that you forgot to wrap it up, and now you have a lovely Sexually Transmitted Disease that you need to treat. According to an interview between Glamour Magazine and Ashwini Nakdarni, M.D., a psychiatry instructor at Harvard Medical School, the sun tends to make people more interested in sex because it boosts their mood. Studies have shown, that there is an increase in contracting an STD during the summer months. Dr. Nadkarni once told Glamour Magazine, “Sunlight has been shown to have an association with serotonin, a key neurotransmitter in the ability to experience pleasure. In addition everyone’s wearing less clothing, sex might be on your brains more than usual.”

and summer “romances.” I’m pretty sure you can guess what happens next. Clark County has been rated one of top counties in the US for contracting STDs. According to the CDC, Clark County has been rated the number one county for Syphilis in the US. It’s no surprise that with Sin Cities continuous flow of international tourists coming and going, unprotected sex is bound to happen, and more than likely bringing along diseases. This gives a whole new meaning to “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas!” Of course, other factors play in to our high numbers of STD contraction. It is important for all of us to be vigilant when it comes to protecting ourselves against all sexually transmitted diseases. Unfortunately, not everyone does. We should all be able to have #FunintheSun, but we should also be smart about our choices when having sex, especially, if we have multiple sex partners. Whether someone uses a condom or not, they should still be getting tested and utilizing services available in their county. It is always better to be safe than sorry.

Now, living in the Las Vegas area, we are subject to some of the hottest summers throughout the US. Of course, with these summers, come: pool parties, lots of day drinking, very little clothing, PARADE OCTOBER 11TH | FESTIVAL OCTOBER 12TH

A DAY WITHOUT LESBIANS IS A DAY WITHOUT SUNSHINE BY JOSLYN HATFIELD

October 8th marks International Lesbian Day, (yasss honey it is a thing). The worldwide celebration of lady-loving ladies originated in Australia and has gained momentum in regions outside of Oz over time. The holiday differs from Lesbian Visibility Day (celebrated in April) which focuses on combating the systemic erasure of lesbians from within the male-dominated LGBTQ+ activism community and media. At the core, both days share a theme of identity. Commonly defined as a fact of being who or what a person is, identity is a complex intersection of sexuality, gender identification, ethnicity, and 70

socio-economic factors (to name a few). Yet recent years have seen a noticeable shift among LGBTQ+ individuals (particularly younger generations) shying away from binaries and embracing fluid constructs of identity. Where this leaves lesbians is anyone’s guess. Take for example, the long-standing queer media titan After Ellen, who saw a 17 year run in the LGBTQ+ community nearly undone by a tweet alleging a pattern of Trans-phobic content. So much so, that according to Mary Emily O’hara of Out, “the creators at major queer media outlets authored an open letter slamming the message these so-called lesbian publications are sending to YOUR GUIDE TO LAS VEGAS PRIDE 2019

In this case, it is the lesbian community deserving of celebration. After all, it was lesbians Barbara Gittings and Kay Lahusen who spearheaded efforts to convince the American Psychiatric Association (APA) to remove homosexuality as a mental disorder and mental illness in its official guidelines. It was lesbians who cared for our gay brothers when few others would during the onset of the AIDS crisis. Catching Up With Mr. & Miss Las Vegas PRIDE 2019 By Ernie Yuen, Las Vegas PRIDE Executive Director

YOUR GUIDE TO LAS VEGAS PRIDE 2019

I had the pleasure of interviewing this year’s Las Vegas PRIDE Royalty for 2019, Alei’aloha and Deejay Savage. Having the opportunity to share something truly unique within a community, is not something everyone gets the chance to accomplish or experience. I caught up with the married couple Jonah and Deejay Labayan-Arvelo to get a brief insight from them.

those who have supported him through his drag career. As for Deejay, becoming Mr. Pride was actually not something he has ever given thought to.” I’m not really a person that likes to be in the spotlight.” says Deejay. When I approached Deejay, he was taken back and wasn’t really sure it was for real. After all was said and done, the couple made the mutual agreement and commitment to reign as a family. Deejay also wanted to have something for their daughter to look back on when she gets older. They said it’s important to show their child that their family represented a common goal for an entire community. Unity, acceptance, and love. Deejay says that being Mr. Las Vegas PRIDE 2019 is a new challenge that will definitely be a proud moment in his life.

Jonah, AKA Alei’Aloha Savage, has always dreamt of one day representing the city of Las Vegas as Miss Las Vegas PRIDE. He started doing drag in April of 2012. He became the drag daughter of the beloved Tracy Savage AKA Kalani one of my best friends growing up in Hawaii. Sadly, Tracy passed away in November 2012. She was in preparation to be crowned Miss Las Vegas PRIDE 2013. As many of us were distraught with her passing, Jonah was crushed. family, it is not something that is heavenly fixated upon’’ says Deejay. “Being trans or being a drag queen is irrelevant when you’re just a normal loving family” says Deejay. When the Las Vegas PRIDE board asked the couple why they wanted to be PRIDE Royalty. They confidently responded that they agreed to identify and be visible for anyone who is like them... or anyone who strives to achieve the same goals. They have shared their story on a number of different media platforms, and a lot of that activity has led them up to this point. They explained to us, that in the world today, they notice every time people turn on the television, or open up their favor76

Jonah and Deejay say, ‘’There is violence and hatred everywhere. We want to share another demographic within our life experiences. We identify with the people, because we ARE the people. We are your postal worker, we are the parents next door, we are your local watering hole security man, we are your photographer and drag performer.’’ They wanted to become Mr. and Miss Las Vegas PRIDE to show us the power of acceptance and love. The last time I talked to Tracy, I made a promise, never in my wildest dreams, had I known this would ever take place. Truly a blessing to everyone they meet and the hearts that they touch. Love comes from the inside and you can see that with Jonah, Deejay and Anuhea. I love you! XOXOX Papa

LGBT HISTORY THREE REASONS WHY EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW LGBT HISTORY

By Beth Sherouse, former ACLS Public Fellow, HRC Senior Content Manager In honor of LGBT History Month, here are a few reasons why it’s important for everyone, not just members of the LGBT community, to know about LGBT people, communities and political movements throughout history: 1. History gives LGBTQ youth (and adults) heroes and role models. Everyone deserves to grow up seeing successful people who resemble them and to whom they can relate–– whether that’s people who share the same race or gender, or families who look like the ones they might one day want to be a part of. While far too many LGBTQ youth still feel isolated and alone in their families and communities, learning history in a way that includes people who look, live and love like them can give them inspiration and hope for a brighter future. For LGBT adults, LGBT historical figures validate our identities and help us remember that no matter what challenges we still face and what messages we receive from anti-LGBT people, we have always been and always will be important and valuable members of society.

2. History helps us understand where we are and where we’re going. History doesn’t just repeat itself, as the cliché suggests. Instead, it informs our present and affects our future as a community. To fully understand the significance of the recent victory for marriage equality, for example, we must understand what came before it––like the U.S. Supreme Court case Loving v. Virginia, which struck down a ban on interracial marriage in 1967, or the Civil Rights, Women’s Liberation and Gay Liberation movements that formed the foundation for modern LGBT organizing and advocacy. 3. Our Stories Matter. Many members of the LGBT community still struggle to have our voices heard and our experiences valued, and the historical silences surrounding our identities don’t exactly help that struggle. Historical accounts that include LGBT people, whether we’re talking about middle school textbooks, college lectures or historical movies or documentaries, make our lives and experiences visible. In turn, that allows potential allies to understand our ongoing struggle for equality.

People are unique in their own ways, and like everyone’s fingerprints, no two people are the same. This leads us to interpret things differently, apart from one another. Last year, I asked myself after another year of LGBTQ+ Prides across the world, “Stephan, what does Pride mean to you?” Well, I will share with you what I discovered, but please, share with me what Pride means to you too!

P is for Potential:

Pride means owning your potential. Look how far we have come in all sorts of different pursuits of equality, with Pride! Most of US are constantly evolving in mindset and how we view the world. Coincidently, a lot of that is based on worldly views. We have the potential, as humanity, and the LGBTQ+ community, to keep spreading love and striving for equality because our potential is unlimited when we are united. At the same time, it is up to you and me to spread love and positive energy and put our individual differences aside. My mom always says, “you get more bees with honey.” 90

R is for Remembering:

Pride is to remember. In this day and age with such instant gratification, we sometimes are living in the moment all too frequently. I don’t think there is anything wrong with living in the moment, I quite enjoy it myself. I do believe it’s important to listen, discuss, and reflect upon where we’ve come from and where we are, then look to the future and see where we want to go collectively. Our history is like a fable that will be told to generations to come; like a time, capsule in the form of words. The story we tell, to remember and educate is mine and YOURS.

I is for Inclusion:

Pride means leaving none behind. Everyone deserves a chance to be included. You never know what situation someone is in and what they are going through. It can be tough to feel included sometimes but when we come together with our common purpose, include everyone who defends that purpose and who practices the golden rule, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” YOUR GUIDE TO LAS VEGAS PRIDE 2019

I am constantly embracing it, Peace, Pride, and Love to you all! just like I encourage everyone else to do.

E is for Educating:

Pride is a feeling you get when your educating people on your true feelings. It is a very diverse world we live in; we are all so different and that is what the LGBTQ+ community is about.  We can’t seem to comprehend why other people don’t share our views, or we just don’t want to figure it out. Maybe we just don’t truly understand we are all different? Just like letting blue and red strongly divide us brings out nothing good inside of US.  If anything, I hope most of us can agree to disagree. More people come into the LGBTQ+ community every day, whether it be to support the community, to “come out,” or just to celebrate. Once we gain their support, I think it is important to sit down and have those converPARADE OCTOBER 11TH | FESTIVAL OCTOBER 12TH
