weekend could give us the funding to produce a great line-up the following year. Unfortunately, we have only been able to make enough money to cover our expenses; with little to keep as a start-up fund for the following year. October can be a good month to host Las Vegas PRIDE. However, another gamble is the weather. We know we have a very small window for beautiful festival weather; dodging 100+ temperatures and falling temperatures below 60’s at night. In 2017, Saturday evening was chilly. The temperature dropped and so did our numbers. We could not make it up the following Sunday.
THROW THE DICE! By Ernie Yuen / Photographs courtesy of Darry Pelletier
Las Vegas is a city of chance; there is always a gamble. For a long time, it didn’t matter what we did. The Las Vegas PRIDE Board took huge risks and gambles each year to host the annual Las Vegas PRIDE Parade and Festival. We moved the location from the Clark County Government Center to Sunset Park in 2016. We reintroduced PRIDE Pets and a kids/family area. These were huge requests from our community. In 2016 people loved that it was back in a park. In 2017 and 2018, attendance remained flat. This 2-day festival needed a reboot. We knew there was something that needed to change, we just couldn’t figure out what the change should be. A date change? A holiday weekend? A new location? Different programing? A lot of ideas were exchanged. The weekend we always wanted, was the same 3-day weekend that the County would host The Renaissance Fair at Sunset Park. Also, the goal was always to try and make Las Vegas PRIDE a destination PRIDE. We were looking to find a way to drive more out of 12 | Las Vegas PRIDE Magazine
town Pride travelers to Las Vegas. If we wanted that same weekend, we knew we needed a new partner other than the County. Our biggest struggle has always been competing against the one main
attraction that brings millions of guests to our amazing city: The Las Vegas Strip. Every weekend is “Gay in Las Vegas”, with artists like Lady Gaga, Cher, and other amazing headliners. How do you complete against that? Next is cost. We didn’t yet have the budget or sponsorship dollars to support a major headliner. Everyone also has a different opinion on who our headliners should be. It has been very challenging. One successful
At the time, we also realized we weren’t big enough for a 2-day festival. In 2018, Sunday was very flat. Disappointment from many of our vendors was felt, some never made enough money to cover their operating cost on Sunday. What were we going to do? Now we believe we found a good recipe. I met up with my buddy Bud Pico from the Downtown Las Vegas Event Center. We had hosted some oneoff events in the past there. I knew that with the rebirth and renovations being done in Downtown, it would attarct many new events. Especially with the success of iHeart and Life is Beautiful. We have hosted our Las Vegas PRIDE Parade Downtown and our numbers have always been strong. Bud and I did a tour of the possible new venue, talked numbers and dates; everything seem promising. I then, reached out to my buddy Jim McMichael from LVCVA. Asked for his opinion on the Columbus Day 3-day weekend and venue change. Could out-of-towners come to Vegas for PRIDE? Everything seemed positive. Here arose an opportunity to change location and have the weekend that we wanted.
Next a meet up with the PRIDE Board, to get their thoughts, opinions, and concerns. During the planning, we were told that there was going to be a route change for all Downtown parades. There were concerns of crowd control within the Freemont area by many of the Downtown Casinos, Freemont tenants, and Metropolitan Police Department. New parade routes were in the plans by the City. Main objective was to not have parades go through the Freemont Experience, which caused many road closures, detours, and traffic problems. A creative change was presented and approved; a new parade route for 2019! The new route would make a left on Bridger Ave and end the parade in front of the new Festival Grounds.
the negative. The rest is now history. We have some ideas for the future. But for the most part, the 2019 Las Vegas PRIDE Parade and Festival were a huge success. Thank you to the many sponsors and partners. Your generosity made this all possible. Las Vegas PRIDE Board: awesome job! To all our volunteers: we couldn’t have done this without you. Most of all: Thank you to the Las Vegas Community for all of your support.
Date change, new venue, new parade route: Las Vegas PRIDE threw the dice and took a huge gamble. “Do it big or don’t do it at all” became the motto of the Board this year. It seems Lady Luck was on our side. After many hours of meetings, thousands of emails, countless walk-throughs; the risk paid off. The positive overwhelmed Las Vegas PRIDE Magazine | 13

Accessing a Healthier Nevada By Nick Martinez
The ADAP program allows us to assist consumers with their allowable medication costs so that they can be assured they won’t have a lapse in their medication. This program is just one of many services we provide in partnership with Nevada’s Ryan White Programs. AHN was built on the principal of shared responsibility where everyone contributes something and no one group is unduly burdened. The model informs our mission and continues to influence our actions as we evolve within the changing healthcare landscape. As healthcare continues to change, Access to Healthcare Network will change along with it, helping to ensure that Nevadans throughout the state have access to the care they need and deserve. Saving lives and giving Nevadans access to the healthcare they deserve has been our mission since 2007 and we don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. Access to Healthcare Network (AHN) is a local non-profit dedicated to assisting individuals and their families in our community in accessing healthcare services and resources to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Access to Healthcare Network has a wide range of programs that can help all different aspects of the community. Our organization started in Northern Nevada in 2007 and has since then grown to become a statewide organization serving thousands of Nevadans.
Access to Healthcare Network has been fortunate to be one of the community partners in the state to receive funding to administer several Ryan White Programs. Our funding at Access to Healthcare Network allows us to identify eligible consumers living with HIV/AIDS as well as providing Medical, Dental, Vision, Insurance, & Medical Case Management assistance. Getting Nevadans to an undetectable state is an everyday fight, and one that we at AHN are never going to stop fighting for. Access to Healthcare Network is one of the organization in the state of Nevada that receives funding for ADAP (Aids Drug Assistance Program) funding.
If you need help to access healthcare don’t be afraid to reach out, we’ll be there with a helping hand. We have 2 locations in the state of Nevada. We are at 3085 E Flamingo Rd, Ste A, Las Vegas, NV 89121 and 4001 S Virginia St, Ste F, Reno, NV 89502 or call us at 844-609-4623. Visit our website at: accesstohealthcare.org

Many Americans have grown weary of the vilification of one’s political opponents at the expense of meaningful dialogue around the issues that we face. President Trump said many inappropriate things about his opponents during the last election race. What will you do to ensure that your campaign stays focused on the issues and not get dragged down into the type of schoolyard bullying and fighting we saw in the period leading up to the last election? Or, is there some validity to that type of raw, street fighting politics?
GETTING TO KNOW MAYOR
PETE BUTTIGIEG OPENLY GAY DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE BY STEVEN MITCHELL
LAS VEGAS PRIDE IS NON-PARTISAN AND DOES NOT PROMOTE OR ENDORSE ANY POLITICIAN RUNNING FOR ANY OFFICE.
In the next year’s Presidential election, the LGBT+ community has achieved a major milestone in that we have an openly gay Democratic Presidential candidate for the first time in American history. This is a significant breakthrough in terms of impact on our community, our nation, and the rights and recognition that so many have fought for over the decades. So, who is Pete Buttigieg?
He worried that coming out would be a career-ending move. His time in Afghanistan made him realize that you only live one life, and he wanted to live it with love in his life. No doubt, this is a realization that many in the LGBT+ community reach at some point in their life and can be just as anxiety-inducing as it was for Pete. Even in this day and age, over 50% of people who identify as LGBT+ are not out at work. This is just one reason Pete Buttigieg was born in 1982. He is why having an open and out gay a Harvard graduate, a Rhodes scholar, Presidential candidate is so important a combat veteran (Afghanistan), and for the community. a two-time mayor of South Bend, IN. “Light The Way.” Chasten Buttigieg, Pete’s husband, was at the Las Vegas PRIDE parade in October. In addition to having 55 staff members in Nevada, two of his national staff members are based out of Las Vegas. It is important for you to use your voice in the upcoming election. Whatever else you might do, be sure to get out and vote. If you would like more information on Pete, you can check out his website at https://peteforamerica.com You can find a listing of all of the 2020 candidates at https://ballotpedia.org Las Vegas PRIDE had the opportunity to interview Pete for this article.
My campaign has a set of values we call “the rules of the road” that apply to myself as well as all of our staff, volunteers, and supporters. This helps us model the values I’ll bring to the office of the president before the first vote is ever cast. The very first value on the list is Respect because it’s essential in the moment we’re in that we show the right level of respect for the office, for each other, for the people that we’re seeking to serve, and for our competitors. That’s the case even if the president shows respect for nobody at all. Of course, we will have vigorous debates within our party, and must be determined in confronting and defeating the current president and his allies. We can do that without ever coming to resemble what we’re fighting against, if we always remember the importance of respect. Another critical value to our campaign is Belonging. We face a crisis of belonging in this country, and our current political environment is making it worse. We have an opportunity in this campaign to build out a sense of belonging by letting people know that they fit into our vision for the country regardless of what they look like, what they believe, or who they love. There’s a tremendous amount of responsibility that goes into public

be part of my approach in the White House as well. My focus will not be on shutting out all who disagree, but on delivering meaningful solutions to make everyday life better for all Americans, consistent with our shared values. As an openly gay Presidential candidate, you are a role model not only for LGBT+ youth but for all members of the LGBT+ community. What are the biggest challenges facing the LGBT population right now? And how will you address those issues? The movement for LGBTQ+ equality has made profound strides thanks to the trailblazers who came before me, but we still have so far to go. Growing up LGBTQ+ in America means looking at an Administration that has unacceptably deemed people who risk their lives for their country as unfit for service because they are transgender. LGBTQ+ kids see a government that is allowing clinicians to refuse to treat patients who are LGBTQ+. They see people who cannot afford the HIV treatment they need though we’ve
made incredible progress on treating the disease. They see transgender people, primarily Black transgender women, murdered at alarming rates. They see a country where they are still not entirely free or safe and one in which they still don’t feel like they fully belong.
Chasten Buttigieg at the 2019 Las Vegas PRIDE Night Parade 32 | Las Vegas PRIDE Magazine
When I’m president, my LGBTQ+ policy will rest on a few foundational pillars: equality, health, youth and families, justice, community, and honor. I will press for and sign the Equality Act into law as soon as it hits my desk, making anti-discrimination the law of the land. I will deliver quality health care that is affordable,
accessible, and equitable for all Americans, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, or race. My Administration will put us on a path to end the HIV/AIDS epidemic—which disproportionately affects gay men and transgender women of color—by 2030, and ban the dangerous practice known as “conversion therapy” once and for all. I will make sure that our nation uses more comprehensive strategies to end hate-based violence against LGBTQ+ people, especially Black transgender women; increases access to housing for LGBTQ+ Americans; and strengthens protections for LGBTQ+ immigrants and refugees.
The unwritten part of the job for President —the moral leadership we didn’t fully appreciate until it was gone —is about creating that sense of belonging where so many now feel only isolation. As President, I’ll focus on bringing down those walls between us so that we can see in our shared stories a new form of American solidarity. We can knit back together one country, where every one of us belongs. What message does Pete have specifically for Nevadans?
Las Vegas PRIDE Magazine | 33
To visit Nevada is to glimpse the future. Not only does Nevada embody the demographic direction of our country as a whole, it models the technological, social, and political developments that can be a great source of hope for us all on issues from labor rights to renewable energy. This past year, Nevada has led on bold ideas — from expanding clean energy to ending surprise hospital billing to ensuring state workers have the right to collectively bargain. The Battle Born State has come a long way in the last few years, but there’s more that
34 | Las Vegas PRIDE Magazine
can be done to improve the lives of Nevadans, and you deserve support from the White House on issues of concern in the state. When I’m President, I will deliver affordable, universal health care with Medicare for All Who Want It and offer Americans the choice to walk away from a private plan and into a public alternative. Instead of tax cuts for the wealthiest, we’ll lift wages, empower workers, and invest in affordable housing. We’ll bring Americans together around common-
sense gun reforms and dismantling systemic racism, so that your race is no predictor of your health or your wealth or your relationship with law enforcement. I will prioritize facing our climate catastrophe, while protecting Nevada’s public lands and wildlife for generations to come. And when I’m President, I will use the power of the presidency to tear down the walls that have excluded far too many, especially LGBTQ+ people so that the next chapter of America is one where everyone is empowered, where everyone belongs.

The 2020 edition of Mike Ruiz’s Bullies & Biceps calendar is bigger and sexier than ever, ending 2019 on fire and taking us into the New Year wanting more! Besides some of New York Bully Crew’s most lovable pups, the collection of gorgeous, male fitness models includes passionate animal advocates and bully owners themselves. As always, Mike’s vision is captivating and provocative, but his message is timeless… To end the discrimination and misunderstanding of the beloved Pit Bull type dog! Photographer Mike Ruiz’s 2020 calendar, Bullies & Biceps, is seventeen months of perfection (from December 2019 until April 2021) that will put a smile on your face every day of the new year. It makes a wonderful holiday, birthday or Valentine’s Day gift for the special animal lover in your life! Mike Ruiz is a celebrity photographer whose clients include Kim Kardashian, Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, Billy Porter, Ruby Rose, Priyanka Chopra, Nick Jonas and countless others. In addition to his work in Hollywood, Ruiz is known for shooting top male fitness models. “I admire men who have sculpted their bodies into works of art,” he says. “It takes incredible skill and knowledge to form human tissue to near perfection. Photographing their work is quite gratifying to me.”
Photographer Mike Ruiz
Mike and Oliver by Virgil Ocampo
The men featured in Bullies & Biceps are some of the biggest male fitness models working today. Collectively, they have hundreds of thousands of followers on social media. They are all so passionate about animal rescue, they provided their own transportation to the New Jersey shoot in order to be a part of this iconic project. Wyatt Engemen, the model who appears with pup, Uriel, on the calendar’s cover, drove 1400 miles to participate. “I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to help these very misunderstood dogs,” he says. Mike Ruiz, too, is an animal rescuer. In fact, it was his beloved Oliver, a black Pit Bull that overcame adversity, opened people’s hearts and minds to Pit Bull type dogs, and made them see these beautiful souls in a different light, that inspired him to create
Bullies & Biceps. The dogs that appear in the calendar were chosen at random and represent only a fraction of those in need. “This is a very sad time to be in rescue,” explains Carla Mohan of the New York Bully Crew. “People are giving up their dogs without remorse. Pit bull type dogs are especially vulnerable because most rescues shy away from saving them due to lack of experience, knowledge and the negative media coverage the beautiful creatures have received.” Founded by Craig Fields in 2010, New York Bully Crew specializes in the rescue, rehabbing and rehoming of pit bull type dogs. They partner with city shelters around the country to help local animals and have also begun outreach in Puerto Rico, Honduras, Venezuela, Peru and South Korea. “Pit Bull type dogs are the most loyal and loving dogs,” Carla continues. “They are soulful creatures that can be the silliest best friend ever. I have had many different breeds of dogs in my life, but none compare to bullies.” She hopes the calendar will open people’s eyes and hearts and change misconceptions about this goofy and jolly breed. Every dollar made from the sale of the Bullies & Biceps 2020 calendar will go directly to New York Bully Crew for various services benefitting the health and welfare of the dogs. “The calendar makes the perfect holiday gift and also brings awareness to these special animals,” says Mike Ruiz. “Every pit bull deserves a forever home.” Mike Ruiz’s 2020 calendar, Bullies & Biceps, is available for $26.99 at https://www.nybullycrew.org/product/ bullies-biceps-2020-calendar/.

PALAZZO WATERFALL ATRIUM AND HOLIDAY GARDENS
HOLIDAY AT THE PARK The holidays are here at The Park with its ornament filled archways, frosted crystal blooms, branches lit with icicle lights, and an 80-foot-tall holiday tree. Everyone is welcome at this festive winter wonderland. Lace up your skates and show us your best moves at the ice rink. Join the fun at the Toshiba Plaza outside the T-Mobile arena.
Featuring trees and golden snowflakes, there’s much a-twinkling at the Palazzo Waterfall Atrium and Gardens. Not to be outdone by the twinkle-ness of the golden snowflakes are the gardens bright flowers consisting of poinsettia’s and other seasonal blooms. The Palazzo’s display is definitely worth a visit and is open 24/7 continuing through the first week of January. Be sure to get a photo of you and yours in front of the waterfall, though there may be a wait as it seems to be a prime spot for Las Vegas selfies.
NEW YEAR’S EVE AT FREMONT STREET EXPERIENCE “America’s Party Downtown” will boast 12 bands on three stages, the debut of a new Viva Vision light show from one of the most popular bands in the world, onstage pyrotechnics, an EDM stage and more. New Year’s Eve promises to be the biggest blow-out in all of Las Vegas. Fremont Street Experience has a ton of surprises in store for New Year’s Eve, so don’t miss out!
THE BELLAGIO CONSERVATORY HOLIDAY DISPLAY Each season, the enormously talented horticulturalists and designers who make up the Bellagio Conservatory team transform this 14,000-square-foot floral playground into a showcase of the distinctive sights and colors of spring, summer, fall and winter— each year the theme changes. The Christmas tree is always a show-stopper, and the yearly variations in the displays offer something new each season. Christmas explodes with holiday cheer and makes a wonderful place for pictures. Nothing is spared during the holidays. 34,000 Flowers adorn the display including varieties of Poinsettias, Azalea’s, Cyclamen, and Ottowa Mums. Also included are Silver Tip Trees from Mt. Lassen, California. It’s worth fighting the crowds, for aa glimpse of this “must see” display during the holidays. 68 | Las Vegas PRIDE Magazine
On New Year’s Eve, they are taking the celebration to a new level. In addition to the non-stop live entertainment on three stages, the premiere of a new Viva Vision light show featuring an A-list band, exciting roaming, Broadway-quality entertainment all night long, cool entertainment zones with interactive activities and surprises.
RING IN THE NEW YEAR ON THE LAS VEGAS STRIP
Start off right and usher in the New Year with the Mayor of Las Vegas, Carolyn Goodman’s Party with 25,000 of your new best friends at Fremont Street Experience on New Year’s Eve.
It’s safe to say that New Year’s Eve is the busiest time of the year in Las Vegas -- at least when it comes to partying. There’s a lot going on and you need to plan in advance. Las Vegas Blvd will be shut down to traffic from Russell to Sahara -- which means the Strip will be overloaded with pedestrians watching the fireworks shoot from the rooftops of seven casinos.
Get tickets now and cross a major item off your bucket list as you ring in 2018 in downtown Sin City, the original Las Vegas.
If you plan to drive (and you probably shouldn’t), you’ll have to take the side streets and arrive early to score a parking space at one of the casinos. Uber and Lyft are good alternatives although the flexible pricing rates may be through the roof. Las Vegas PRIDE Magazine | 69

Have you ever wanted to enter a place that felt like a dream where only happiness exists? Have you ever wanted to surround yourself with hundreds of yellow rubber duckies while sitting in a yellow bathtub? Jared Paul and Faculty Productions originally opened Happy Place on November 20, 2017 in downtown Los Angeles. This run was an immediate sell out for them, something that could not just end there. With the success of this first run, they knew that they 74 | Las Vegas PRIDE Magazine

MY KINDA MOVIES:
2019! By Paul Cieslewicz
This may be showing my age, but you could look at the movies of 2019 as a game of Pac-Man. Pac-Man himself is Disney eating up the board. Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde (the ghosts) are the other movie studios, Warner Bros., Universal, Sony and Paramount, in pursuit. Each of the dots Pac-Man eats is another movie taken out by the “House of Mouse”. The four giant power pellets in the corners, the ones that send the ghosts scurrying, represent Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Marvel (Captain Marvel & Avengers: Endgame), Frozen II and The Lion King. These give Pac-Man (Disney) the power to gobble up the ghosts. This is not to say that Disney, with its dominant hold on the 2019 box office crown, is infallible. While Aladdin pleasantly surprised and proved to everyone that Will Smith could successfully play the Genie without copying the late great Robin Williams, the Tim Burton helmed (I still haven’t forgiven him for Dark Shadows) liveaction adaptation of Dumbo was an emotionless mess. “Baby Mine”, the song that always reduces me to tears watching the original animated classic, barely earned a sniffle during the “updated” film version. Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, while not being a bad movie per se, was met with a massive “meh” from 80 | Las Vegas PRIDE Magazine
the movie going crowd. Did we really need a follow-up to Maleficent, no matter how much we love Michelle Pfeiffer? Even Avengers: Endgame, while taking the title of #1 movie of all-time from James Cameron’s Avatar (can anyone name one character from this movie? Anyone??), had a head scratching, plot hole creating, time traveling ending involving Captain America that made absolutely no sense. 2019 started off well enough. The tradition of starting the year with a horror movie, Escape Room, while not being very terrifying, was surprisingly fun to watch. It was followed immediately by The Upside, a movie that had been shelved for almost 2 years because of Harvey Weinstein’s shenanigans. We discovered that combining Bryan Cranston’s amazing talent with Kevin Hart’s ummm… ability to speak (I tried!) actually didn’t suck. But then the movie blahs began to set in. After Split signaled a comeback for M. Night Shyamalan in 2018, Glass was merely average, and made us remember that this was the guy who gave us The Last Airbender (shudder!). Serenity proved that the star power of both Matthew McConaughey and
Anne Hathaway couldn’t save a bad movie, though it did remind me to watch again the far superior sci-fi film, Serenity, from 2005 (Browncoats unite!). Cold Pursuit showed us that Liam Neeson’s “very particular set of skills” have worn out their welcome after 10 years of carbon copy action films. Alita: Battle Angel, James Cameron’s passion project (he didn’t have a very good year between this and the failure of Terminator: Dark Fate), proved that using the oversized eye effects from Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” video on the heroine of a feature length film was just kinda creepy. And the remake of Pet Semetary left me wondering what all the hype was about. To say I was disappointed is an understatement. Long live the original 1989 version!
of sunny goodness. An honorable mention must to be made to Fighting with My Family, detailing the story of WWE superstar, Paige. I didn’t find out how good this movie from February was until I watched the home video release in May. John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum got the badass recognition it deserved. Pokémon Detective Pikachu received credit for Ryan Reynolds getting me to watch it, even though I had no clue about much of anything happening onscreen. Spider-Man: Far From Home cemented Tom Holland as my favorite Spider-Man (GyllenHolland anyone?). Rocketman made me look at Elton John in a whole new way. Good Boys made me laugh… a lot! Godzilla: King of the Monsters became my guilty pleasure of the summer, no matter how bloated it became and setup the upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong. It fulfilled my quotient for making stuff go boom in a big way, and I liked it.
To quote my favorite Norwegian group, a-ha, “Summer Moved On”, and the fall movies did not disappoint. I have to ask, though, is it wrong of me to mention how much I enjoyed Downton Abbey and Judy in the same sentence as mentioning how much I liked It Chapter Two and Joker? Just curious! I couldn’t wrap up the movies of 2019 without mentioning my man crush of the year, Adam Brody, in two of my favorite movies of the year, Shazam! (the original Captain Marvel if you want to do some research) and Ready or Not. The former member of the show, The O.C., while not being the star of either movie, made memorable appearances in both films. Shazam! was the most fun I had watching a comic book movie this year, and it proved that DC could shed the dark & gritty reputation of its earlier films. It also proved that Adam Brody could look damn good in a superhero
costume. He also contributed greatly to the fun of Ready or Not, a horror comedy that had me laughing just as much as it had me jumping in my seat. It also has one of the best last lines in a movie in a long time, but I won’t spoil it for you. Go see the movie! There are still plenty of movies left to see in 2019 that I haven’t seen yet (I’m writing this in early November). I’m looking forward to seeing Doctor Sleep, Ford v Ferrari, Frozen II, Knives Out, Jumanji: The Next Level and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. I’ll admit I’m a bit wary of Charlie’s Angels and Cats. On Christmas Day I have a tradition of going to a movie, and this year 1917 will be that movie, seen on the biggest screen possible. And is it too early to say I’m greatly anticipating Wonder Woman 1984 in 2020? Now get your keister off the couch, and go see a movie the way they were meant to be seen, on the big screen!
It wouldn’t be until the arrival of How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World in late February that I would have a truly moving experience in the theater again. And by “moving” I mean I was openly weeping in the theater. I’ll admit it! Now will the Academy please award Toothless with a long deserved Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film in 2020? PLEASE?! When the summer 2019 movie season arrived, it produced its share Las Vegas PRIDE Magazine | 81

PLAY BINGO
Let’s
WITH LAS VEGAS PRIDE! By: Ernie Yuen
From the day I joined the Las Vegas PRIDE board, Las Vegas PRIDE Family Bingo has always been a part of Las Vegas PRIDE. It started off super simple, 20 to 30 people at a dive bar called Sasha’s, at the first bingo we raised $66.00, you would think it was $6600.00.

Everyone knows that here in Las Vegas locals are habitual, once a date, day and time is set, changing anything is self-sabotage to the event host. Closing of the Hamburger Mary’s on Paradise, put Las Vegas PRIDE Family Bingo on hold. Attempts to host Bingo at The Center (old location in Commercial Center) were not successful. There was also another hurdle Las Vegas PRIDE needed to jump over. The Las Vegas Gaming Board had started monitoring “Bingo Events”. Proper paperwork was filed, 501c3 information shared and host location was confirmed. Las Vegas PRIDE Family Bingo moved to the strip. MGM, a very proud supporter always wanting to be involved, volunteered to host our monthly PRIDE Family Bingo, the traditional “Second Tuesday” was challenging for our new venue CircusCircus, a new day was set, “First Wednesday of the month”. Keeping the “Drag” component was easy and a large 300 seat convention space was ready. Las Vegas PRIDE Family Bingo hosted at Circus Circus lasted for 26 months, it was a great space, with great food, and easy access parking.
We were in the red $75,000.00 from the year before. Las Vegas PRIDE was in trouble, the new board of 21 decided we needed to fix the problem and rebuild. Las Vegas PRIDE Family Bingo was born. The original name was “Drag me to Bingo with Las Vegas PRIDE” and it was hosted by drag queens at Hamburger Mary’s on Paradise. PRIDE Bingo was a cute event and it opened many doors to start partnerships with many of the current partners/sponsors that we have now. At the beginning each board member was required to bring in 2 bingo prizes, and part of the revenue from past events was used to purchase the cover all prize ($75.00 to $100.00 budget). Each month Bingo grew, so did the demand for better prizes and better Bingo games. The one thing that never changed, is true bingo players love to play bingo, and they love to win. However, things can get heated when rules were challenged. Bingo is a game of chance and we
of Fortune Bingo were invented, it changed things and people started coming back. Making the 2-hour event exciting and making people want to return next month seemed to be working.
needed to figure out procedures to make everything fair, leaving zero blame on any board member or Bingo host. Procedures of prize choices, raffle tickets were put in place, and today we use the same procedures.
PRIDE Family Bingo became repetitious; players started dropping out. Reinventing Las Vegas PRIDE Family Bingo was challenging, we needed to make things new and different. Let’s Make a Deal and Wheel
During the run Las Vegas PRIDE renewed its 501c3 status and because of space limitations at The Center, Alexis Park became the new home for Las Vegas PRIDE Family Bingo. Like MGM, Alexis Park wanted to be involved with Las Vegas PRIDE and had convention space to share with us to host Bingo. There was immediate success, due to the central location and lots of parking. 2015 to early 2019 was the run of PRIDE Family Bingo at Alexis Park. Hamburger Mary’s reopened in Las Vegas on East Flamingo and Las Vegas PRIDE Family Bingo returned back to its iconic home where it all began 17 years ago. We have just completed our first year and are ready to start 2020
are starting our 2nd Season scheduled the 4th Wednesday of every month, dinner seating starts at 5:00pm and Daubers up at 7:00pm. Las Vegas PRIDE Charity Bingo is a partnership with Hamburger Mary’s. Hosted most Thursdays, local 501c3 charities host and invite their partners, sponsors, supports to come and play bingo, they provide all their own prizes and all revenue goes directly back to each charity. Dinner seating starts at 5:00pm, Daubers up at 6:30pm None of these events would be possible without the support of partners and sponsors that help supply prizes for all of our Bingos. Because we are a 501c3 we are not allowed to give out cash prizes, 80% of the prizes are donated and the rest are purchased locally and online. All of our Bingo events are hosted at Hamburger Mary’s on East Flamingo. If you’re interested in become a sponsor of Las Vegas PRIDE Bingo, or want to volunteer, please email Executive Director Ernie Yuen at ed@ lasvegaspride.org.
Today, Southern Nevada Association of Las Vegas PRIDE hosts 3 Bingos, 17th Season Las Vegas PRIDE Family Bingo, our traditional Family Friendly Bingo schedule the 1st Wednesday of each month with dinner seating starts at 5:00pm and Daubers Up at 6:30. New to our line up and overdue, is our Hope to see you soon! Let’s Play Bingo Las Vegas PRIDE Naughty Kinky Bingo, It’s twisted and fun, a 21+ event, we
What was next? A new location, new challenges. An error in tax filing caused Las Vegas PRIDE to temporarily lose its 501c3 status. The Center agreed to host Las Vegas PRIDE as their fiscal agent as the Executive Board worked hard to regain its 501c3 status. Both boards agreed Las Vegas PRIDE needed to stay engaged with the community and continue hosting Las Vegas PRIDE Family Bingo, so Las Vegas PRIDE Family Bingo started back up at The Center on the first Wednesday of the month at 6:30pm.
