iCrossing sponsors Artists Open Houses Since founding Spannerworks, now iCrossing, in Brighton eleven years ago, I have been passionate about bringing together the very best of creativity and business in as many ways as possible. Artists Open Houses helps make Brighton and Hove the vibrant and exciting city it is to work and live in. Our sponsorship forms part of iCrossing’s broad commitment to the arts and we are delighted to be involved. We feel the arts offer skills and benefits to businesses and to illustrate this we are extending our sponsorship by launching the iCrossing Award given to an exhibiting artist from the Open Houses. The award has been designed to nurture an artist for a year, giving the opportunity to exhibit their work in our Brighton and London offices alongside a series of lively events linking the exhibition to our business. The artist will be chosen by iCrossing employees and announced at the end of May. The Artists Open Houses continues to be one of the most important creative events in the South East; we see this collaboration contributing to the thriving cultural life which is unique to Brighton and Hove. Welcome to the 28th Open Houses festival, the biggest yet. This year 221 venues will be opening their doors, to display the work of over 1,000 artists and makers.

Voted the ‘Best Cultural Event of 2007’ at last year’s Brighton and Hove Business Awards, the Brighton Festival of Artists Open Houses is a great opportunity to view work by leading local artists and makers in their own homes and studios.

<< The event is a huge benefit for the city, bringing in so many people who may not have been to Brighton and Hove before. It is also one of the great highlights of Brighton's cultural calendar. >>

From beach huts to Regency villas, you are welcome to view and buy from a wealth of paintings, sculpture, ceramics, jewellery, glass, textiles and more. Entry to houses is free and artists are often on hand to discuss their work with visitors. There is also the bonus of the occasional stop for tea and homemade cake.

Richard Pearson Partnership Executive VisitBrighton

Most venues are grouped as trails, where houses are within easy walking distance of each other. These are either within the city or in the surrounding area. 5

Awards

Guided tours

There are two sponsored awards this year. iCrossing, our new major sponsor, will be selecting an artist from the Open Houses to support throughout the year. They will provide exhibition space and acquire a range of the artist’s work for their permanent collection.

If you haven’t visited the Open Houses before, you may like to join our curated guided tours. See the inside front cover for more details.

Credit cards Please remember to bring your cheque book – only a few venues have the facility to accept plastic!

Coast Magazine will be selecting the winners for the Best Open House Award, who will receive major coverage in 2009 in the magazine along with the runners up. MyHotel is also giving generous sponsorship in kind by providing events space at their fabulous new hotel in Jubilee Square. The awards ceremony will be hosted there in June. 6

Open Houses on film During last year’s Open Houses festival, Barbara Myers (of Radio 4) and partner Paul Loman of HomeGrown-Films, created an observational documentary which explores the Open House experience, revealing the importance of art in all our lives. This 40 minute film, Art:House, captures the spirit of one of Britain’s biggest free arts event. Look out for Art:House in the Fringe Festival – Sallis Benney Theatre, 6.30pm, Sun May 4th.

Mailing list To help the planet and limit our distribution costs, we are hoping to reduce our mail-out within Brighton and Hove, where brochures are readily available at venues throughout the city. If you would like to help us by removing your name voluntarily from our mailing list in future, please go to our website: www.aoh.org uk, and enter your details in the 'mailing list deletion' section.

For further information about all Artists Open Houses venues and artists take a look at our website www.aoh.org.uk 7

The historic village of Ditchling, just to the north of Brighton and the Downs, has a rich artistic heritage. Eric Gill, Sir Frank Brangwyn, Edward Johnston, Charles Knight and others contributed to this vibrant artistic community. Today there are many artists and makers living and working here, and there is a unique opportunity during the Festival to see a wide variety of fine and applied arts, both past and present, in the museum, galleries and local studios. All the venues are within a few miles of the centre of this picturesque village, and there is free parking available. Please note that opening times vary.

Travel information Lewes has long been a town associated with the arts, but perhaps the most well-known connection was with the Bloomsbury Group, who were based a short distance outside the town at Charleston Farmhouse. The main players in the group were the innovative writer Virginia Woolf and her sister Vanessa Bell, the painter. Lewes is a great place to have a day out, with its history and excellent restaurants and pubs.

Train All venues are within walking distance of Lewes Station. There are regular services from London, Brighton, Eastbourne and Seaford. Bus No 28 and 29 regular service from Brighton. Car Lewes is just off the A27. Parking There is metered parking on the road and a large number of car parks within Lewes. Car park (marked A on map) charges only ÂŁ2 per day Mon-Sat. Parking is free on Sundays. Also free parking in School Car Park (marked S on map), opposite Southover Grange (near Venue 1) at weekends.

Ruth's abstract works are influenced by a variety of urban surface textures including old 1 buildings, subways, etc. Her photographs and sketches are1 developed into paintings/installations of significant beauty. Lance is exhibiting several complex charcoal drawings, oil/acrylic paintings and mixed media wire and metal sculptures which he feels reflect the issues that interest him.
