CORONAVIRUS LATEST

WHERE TO GET YOUR INFORMATION The coronavirus is still spreading across the globe, and there is a wealth of information monitoring the outbreak, from websites giving all cases notified; all people hospitalised, and numbers of those who have died from the COVID19 disease around the world, to websites issuing the latest public health advice. BRIGHTON & HOVE CITY COUNCIL Coronavirus (Covid-19) Excellent local guide which is clear and reassuring and gives advice to all parts of the community new.brighton-hove.gov.uk/coronavirus-covid-19 UK GOVERNMENT Latest information and advice from Public Health England and the Department of Health and Social Care gov.uk/guidance/coronavirus-covid-19-information-for-thepublic#what-to-do-if-you-have-symptoms

SOME MAY BE CONFUSED BY THE NAMES GIVEN TO THE NEW CORONAVIRUS HERE IS A GUIDE:

UK GOVERNMENT RESPONSE gov.uk/government/topical-events/coronavirus-covid-19-ukgovernment-response

2019 NOVEL CORONAVIRUS The initial name given to the virus once it was first identified, which indicates it is a new type of coronavirus. Coronaviruses are common throughout the world and some usually cause mild to moderate respiratory illnesses such as the common cold. SARS identified in 2002 stands for severe acute respiratory syndrome and is caused by a coronavirus called SARS-CoV. Since 2004 there have not been any known cases of SARS reported. MERS is another serious coronavirus identified in 2012. This stands for Middle East respiratory syndrome.

2019-NCOV An abbreviation of 2019 Novel Coronavirus. This is the name preferred by the World Health Organisation in their global communications.

WORLD HEALTH ORGANISATION Daily updates about Coronavirus Disease (Covid-19) outbreak who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019 The WHO website includes a handy myth-busters page who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus2019/advice-for-public/myth-busters

COVID-19 This is the name of the disease or illness the virus causes. Based on COronaVIrusDisease2019 “We had to find a name that did not refer to a geographical location, an animal, an individual, or a group of people, and which is also pronounceable and related to the disease,” said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director-general of the WHO. This disease name is popularly used for the virus in a lot of the world’s media including the BBC.

WORLDOMETER Number of cases by country including numbers of those who have recovered worldometers.info/coronavirus

SARS-Cov2 There is a naming convention for viruses, and this virus has now been named by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV). Their reasons for calling it this is summed up by this quote: “The present outbreak of lower respiratory tract infections, including respiratory distress syndrome, is the third spillover, in only two decades, of an animal coronavirus to humans resulting in a major epidemic.” Many are not happy with this name due to the word SARS and connotations of a more deadly disease, harking back to the 2002/2003 outbreak of SARS. The WHO and many media will not use the correct virus name for this reason in public health messages, to avoid misunderstandings and more global panic.

VENUE NEWS…

With the country taking essential precautions because of the COVID 19 crisis here is the information as released by local venues and events regarding events and bookings

F

or over 25 years Latest, and previously The Punter, has been a massive supporter of local arts, both performers and venues in Brighton and Hove and across East and West Sussex. Right now that rich resource of both talent and places to see that talent, from cabaret and comedy to theatre and music in all its many forms is seriously affected by the coronavirus. The Government has advised everyone to avoid non-essential social contact. Clearly this impacts massively on the entertainment world, both venues and performers alike. It also affects audiences and existing ticket holders, many of whom will be wondering where they stand right now. We have asked the major venues what people should do regarding bookings and the information is printed below. There are however a great many smaller venues acros the city, homes to live music, cabaret, spoken word events and so much more. To find out what their policy is go to their websites where you should find the relevant information. Latest is encouraging you to be as supportive of our local venues, big and small, as you can be. At this time they will be very busy looking at ways to deal with the situation and survive so please be patient. In the meantime Latest TV stays open and a full listing of the next two weeks programmes can be found at the back of the magazine.

THEATRE ROYAL BRIGHTON

THE OLD MARKET

In response to the Prime Minister’s statement yesterday evening, advising the UK public to avoid unnecessary social contact, including in theatres, we regret to inform you that shows in

Here at TOM, the safety of our customers and staff is our number one priority. With everything going on currently and the ever-changing developments surrounding the coronavirus

all Ambassador Theatre Group UK venues are temporarily suspended with immediate effect. We understand that this decision comes as a disappointment, and a massive inconvenience for those of you already on the way to a venue this evening, but ultimately we all want the same thing: the health and safety of our communities, and we believe this is the correct decision to make. Given the current ambiguity and lack of clarity as to how long our theatres may be closed for, we hope to provide you with an update within the next 48 hours regarding the exchange of tickets. We will be consulting with industry bodies including the Society of London Theatre and UK Theatre and the government over the immediate future. For now, we would like to thank you for your understanding and patience, and to recognise the incredible efforts and support of producers, artists, partners and customers over this difficult period. Mark Cornell Group CEO, Ambassador Theatre Group

THE BRIGHTON CENTRE In response to Government guidelines advising the UK to avoid unnecessary social contact, we have made the decision to suspend all events at

the Brighton Centre until the end of March, we will continue to monitor the situation and follow advice and official guidelines. If the venue status changes beyond the end of this month we will update this page. Please note, the Box Office at the Brighton Centre will also be closed to personal callers for over-the-counter bookings. Our Access Line, 01273 292695, remains open for accessible bookings and advice Monday - Saturday 10am to 4pm. Where we can, public events will be rescheduled into the future. Ticket holders will be notified with details of re-scheduling and again once new dates have been confirmed, if they were not available at the time of the announcement. All tickets will be valid for any rescheduled dates and customers will not need to take any action. If a customer cannot attend a rescheduled date, they should contact their point of purchase. If an event is cancelled ticket holders will be notified and automatically refunded. We will be unable to answer questions about individual event statuses but will keep this page updated with details on any affected events as information becomes available, we appreciate that this may be frustrating for customers and apologise for any inconvenience caused but we hope this situation will be short lived and that we can welcome you back to the Brighton Centre very soon. Please bear with us during this extremely busy and ever-changing time for our team. The Brighton Centre wish to thank all our customers, clients and staff for their continued cooperation and understanding during this unprecedented situation. Keep well.

(COVID-19), we wanted to let you know about what we are doing to support and keep people safe during this time. As a precaution, we have taken the difficult decision to postpone or cancel all events that were due to be with us until Wednesday 25 March. All ticket holders will be contacted via email this week with further details on the revised event dates or when to expect a refund. The events affected are: • Losing the Night: Wed 18-Fri 20 Mar • HOSTED: Sat 21 Mar • Ceyda Tanc Dance - KAYA: Sun 22-Tue 24 Mar • The Space in Sound: Wed 25 Mar All events after this date are scheduled to go ahead as normal. We will continue to keep in touch with you and follow official guidance from the UK Government and Public Health England carefully. We know that this is a hugely uncertain time, and we are doing everything we can to support our staff, artists and community (many of whom are freelance) during this time. We rely on ticket sales for a substantial amount of our income, and as a charity, this is a worrying time for us and the whole cultural sector. If you can afford to, please consider donating the price of your ticket, or another amount however large or small, to The Old Market, to help us get through this difficult period. latest TV

CHICHESTER FESTIVAL THEATRE

THE HAWTH

These are unprecedented times. The welfare of our audiences, artists and staff is paramount, and we also want to support the valiant efforts of our health service. So, we are taking action in line with Government advice and postponing the opening productions of Festival 2020: Brecht’s The Life of Galileo (which was due to run in the Festival Theatre, 24 April – 16 May), Stoppard’s The Real Thing (Minerva Theatre, 7 May – 6 June), Jay Presson Allen’s The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (Festival Theatre, 29 May – 20 June) and Penelope Skinner’s The Village Bike (Minerva Theatre, 12 June – 4 July). All other events during this period are also cancelled and the Theatre building, including the Café, will be closed to the public after today (Tuesday 17 March). The Life of Galileo and The Real Thing will be rescheduled for the autumn (new dates will be announced in due course), and we hope to mount the other two productions at some point in the future. We currently plan to go ahead with South Pacific (6 July – 29 August), The Unfriend (17 July – 22 August) and all the Festival 2020 productions thereafter. We may be able to reopen the building earlier. Ticket holders will be contacted as soon as possible about ticket exchange, credit, donation or refund options. As you can imagine, the next few days will be very busy for our Box Office team, so we appreciate your patience at this time. We are deeply sorry for the disappointment this will cause. Chichester Festival Theatre has been at the heart of West Sussex for almost 60 years, and we look forward to opening our doors and welcoming our audiences back as soon as we can. In the meantime, we’ll be considering how we might be able to help our community during this challenging time; and send our supporters, audiences and colleagues our encouragement, support and best wishes for their health and wellbeing. If you have booked for a show after 19 April, these tickets remain on sale and we will let you know in plenty of time if anything changes. If you have tickets booked for a show between now and Sunday 19 April, we ask that you do not contact our Box Office team or email us. We will be in touch with you. Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to welcoming you back soon.”

We will continue to update you on the situation when we receive further advice from the Government. Please keep an eye on emails and on our social media channels over the coming weeks for more updates. If you have bookings for shows with us, we will be in touch separately with information about rescheduled performances, cancellations, refunds and donations. THE LANDLADY

PAPER CHASE… am still recovering from major surgery and came out of hospital just as the coronavirus was beginning to take hold. In the media and houses of Parliament at least. Although I am recovering well, I am unable to purchase the painkillers I need due to all the selfish people who also rushed out, not only to buy all the pain killers, but also to buy every last remaining bag of pasta/piece of chicken/toilet roll. I don’t know who these people are, but they’re certainly not willing to admit to their selfish stockpiling if those interviewed on news reports are to be believed. All the people I know personally say that they haven’t done any more shopping than usual, but I’m afraid that this sensible behaviour will do nothing to quell the panic buying of the insane few. When I first left hospital, I was unable to do my own shopping, so was

I

“I don’t know who these people are, but they’re certainly not willing to admit to their selfish stockpiling ” at the mercy of my offspring for the first few days, as I lay in bed watching Frasier and The Chase. I was initially annoyed with The Big Daughter who, when sent out to purchase toilet roll, came back with a pack big enough to stuff a king-sized duvet. I am usually way to tight to invest this type of outlay, especially on something that I can easily live without. All those ridiculous people who think that toilet roll is a luxury item should spend a month travelling around Cuba, where the majority of folk have lived without toilet roll for the past 60 years and have much bigger things

to worry about. Cuban supermarkets have an appearance similar to our supermarkets at the moment ALL THE TIME and we should count ourselves lucky that, in these times of scant loo roll, at least we can still buy a pint of milk, a loaf of bread and a ‘perfectly ripe’ avocado. The Big Son shares an opinion similar to mine when it comes to ‘luxury paper items’ and says that at least we can still have a shower, which is true, if a little disgustingly so. EUYYYYEUCH!!!

Festival in May, all planned events have been suspended. Brighton Festival was due to take place from 2 to 24 May 2020 and is the largest annual, curated multi-arts festival in England. This is the first time the Festival has been cancelled in its 53-year history. Over 120 cultural events were scheduled across the region, including 17 premieres, commissions, co-productions and many Festival debuts from international artists. The annual Children’s Parade has also been affected and will not go ahead. Festival staff are working with artists and partners to discuss whether some events can happen at a later date or in a different way. Due to the scale of the festival and the inclusion of many international artists and touring companies, rescheduling the festival as a whole would not be feasible. Andrew Comben, Chief Executive of Brighton Festival said: “The Festival team is devastated that this incredible programme, led by Guest Director Lemn Sissay won’t happen this year and that audiences won’t experience the diversity of artists coming from across the world to our city. Lemn’s vision was to build an ‘Imagine Nation’ at Brighton Festival. It seems to us that we need imagination, creativity and the strength of our community now more than ever. We are exploring what might be the most creative contribution the Festival and its artists can make at this time and we will share more on this when we can. “We are aware that the whole of society is being impacted by the coronavirus pandemic but also realise the profound affect it will have on the cultural sector and on the economy of our city, to which the Festival is such an important contributor. It is vital we work together to support our staff, artists and partners and that Brighton & Hove’s rich cultural life can survive and emerge from this challenge, so we all continue our contribution to the life and wealth of the whole region.”

Brighton Festival 2020 Guest Director, the acclaimed poet and author Lemn Sissay commented: “The cancellation of Brighton Festival is a huge blow for us all but it’s also inevitable given the severity of what we all face. I believe artists have a role to play and a gift to offer and the creativity that is in us all reminds us of the preciousness and beauty of life. Let’s cherish that now and emerge from this with renewed humanity and strength.” Customers who have booked tickets for events will be contacted by the Festival ticket office as soon as possible with refund information.

Brighton Festival is a registered charity and almost two thirds of the festival costs would have been covered by ticket sales. Ticket holders are being offered the option to donate some or all of their ticket purchase in order to help support the Festival’s future and its work with artists and community partner organisations. Since it was first established in 1967, Brighton Festival has given artists and performers at the cutting edge of artistic practice and on the edge of society, the creative space to have their voices heard and to showcase new work. Cllr Alan Robins, Chair of the Tourism, Equalities, Communities and Culture Committee, Brighton & Hove City Council added: “The cancellation of this year’s Festival is disappointing but inevitable given the current circumstances and is absolutely the right decision. We look forward to the Festival returning next year.” Brighton Dome closed on Tue 17 March and is cancelling or postponing its events programme until further notice. THE WARREN 2020 Otherplace Brighton are sad to announce that, following Tuesday’s advice from the government on preventing the spread of Coronavirus, we have taken the decision to postpone opening our Brighton Fringe festival site The Warren until later in the year. We are currently in talks with the council about finding a rescheduled date to open later in the year and will keep everyone updated on developments. Anyone who has booked tickets to see a show at The Warren this May will be able to transfer their ticket for the rescheduled date as soon as it is announced. For a full statement and further information please visit our advice page.

BRIGHTON FRINGE 2020 Following the announcement by the prime minister urging the general public not to visit pubs, clubs or theatres, and advice from Brighton & Hove City Council. We are also intent on securing our company’s continuity and ensuring that we are here for you to enjoy in the future. As a financially independent charity, our next steps must be carefully planned. Based on the Government’s strong advice yesterday to avoid public gatherings in spaces such as theatres, we are reviewing the schedule for our Festival 2020 programme. This is an evolving situation and we thank you for your patience as we work through the appropriate response. We will be in a position to share more detail by 20 March 2020. DAVID MOUNFIELD It is with great sadness that we report that actor, writer, comedian and producer David Mounfield has passed away. We asked his close friend and creative collaborator Brian Mitchell to celebrate the life of this much loved local artist

'Count Arthur Strong's Radio Show' (Radio 4). And, in 2007, he surpised us all by co-writing, with Ross GurneyRandall, the sensitive and serious 'Follow Me', winning Beth FitzGerald many accolades for her protrayal of Ruth Ellis. But he reserved his greatest pride for our theatre company The Foundry Group. From 2010 we took shows including 'Big Daddy Vs. Giant Haystacks' to hundreds of small theatres, village halls and community centres, sleeping Rory-Stewart-like in strangers' houses and getting to know this wonderful land, its sights, and its people. Last year, to commemorate the Alcock and Brown centenary, we toured 'Those Magnificent Men' to aerodromes and air museums around Britain and to Clifden, Ireland, the site of their landing. Towards the end of the play comes this passage: ALCOCK: (READING)...'I believe that ever since man, but recently conscious of his own existence, saw the birds, he has desired to emulate them. Among the myths and fables of Photo by Louise Clarkson every race are tales of human flight. The paradise of most religions is reached through the air and through the air many gods and prophets have passed from earth to their respective heavens, and all authentic angels are endowed with wings.' BROWN: I say that's absolutely beautiful. Who wrote that? ALCOCK:You did.

D

avid Mounfield - actor, writer, comedian and producer – was my friend. He was everybody's friend; at least, that is how it often felt in rehearsals, when it seemed the whole world was trying to call him. He had a talent for friendship that amounted to a super power. Audiences immediately warmed to him, and would sidle up after a show to chat. But he was more than just my friend – he was my esteemed colleague, my mentor, guide, brother-in-arms, partner-in-crime, and right-hand man - and the hole he leaves in the lives of his family and everyone else who loved him is impossible to fill. We first met at Sussex University in 1988. He was sporting an unfashionable mac and less fashionable shirt and trousers; I instantly recognised a kindred spirit. Soon, with Laurence Relton and Joseph Nixon, we founded sketch troupe The Ornate Johnsons, later taking on Glen Richardson, Joanna Neary and Clea Smith. Jerry Sadowitz, an early champion, helped us bag a sell-out residency at Soho Gilbert (No Sullivan)

While I was performing this section one night at Bodmin Aerodrome, a swallow flew into the hangar and chirruped along with me. I found it an almighty struggle getting through it without welling up. I don't think I'd be equal to that challenge again. Land safely, old friend. We had a great journey together. Brian Mitchell

Other highlights included 'The Cheeky Guide to Brighton Stage Show' (co-written with David Bramwell), Jo Caulfield's Radio 4 series, and his role as TerryThomas-esque cad 'Babbington' in 'The Ministry of Biscuits', which Philip Reeve and I wrote for him in 1998. Somehow he fitted in a career apart from me; in many respects more illustrious. He appeared in Tom Stoppard's 'Indian Ink' at The Almeida, ran club nights 'The Semi-Skimmed Comedy Dairy' and 'Comedy at the Con', was Mr. Cooshay in cult hit 'This Is Jinsy', and was known to millions as 'Geoffrey' in LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

hese are terrible and terrifying times for us all, but we all need to eat and we need to eat well. Anyone who watched my Latest TV series Cook It! Might remember the regular feature, what’s in the pantry. It caused quite a row at work at the time as people disputed whether it was a pantry, larder or cupboard. Well to me it was pantry and I have always believed that it is the bedrock of good home cooking.

now and let us hope that as few businesses as possible go under in this period. It’s going to be difficult but we need to be supportive right now in every sense. It is also important that where possible we support our local independent shops, if we don’t shop local we are in grave danger of losing them. Shop local and buy local and seasonal if possible, reducing food miles right now could not be more relevant. Some of us have been doing this for many years, if you know someone who does then ask them how. The supermarket changes will be damaged by all this of course but they are probaly in a stronger position to survive than your local butcher, baker and greengrocer. Above all we need to make sure that the most needy are looked after. If we have elderly or less abled friends and neighbours then give them a call or drop a note through their front door, just make sure that they have food and do not feel abandoned. My last meal out was in an old favourite in London Road, Eastern Eye. I had a dosa that made me smile and when all this is over I will share, but for now it’s eating in, cooking well and staying well. Good health to you all.

“Above all we need to make sure that the most needy are looked after. If we have elderly or less abled friends and neighbours then give them a call or drop a note through their front door, just make sure that they have food and do not feel abandoned” Whilst I detest the concept of hoarding, and might I add, the media that is pillorying those who do it thus sensationalising rather than helping the current situation, a well stocked pantry is a very different issue. I think it might be genetic, my parents and grandparents could not rest if they knew that there was not enough food in the house to cook a meal for unexpected visitors. A store of basic ingredients, staples, seasonings etc will be an essential over the next few weeks. And for those of you who are self declared noncooks, then get out the recipe books or look online. It’s time to learn! So Cook It!, you can catch the episodes on Latest TV or on YouTube. Restaurants are in free fall, with their doors closed their futures are in serious jeopardy. Many are releasing statements about hygiene on social media, statements that I would expect to be standard procedure anyway for some part. Some are braving the storm by offering an increased takeaway service or indeed adding one if they had not before. The well known delivery services are offering a no contact delivery service for those who have need to self isolate. All this is good news for LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

FILM ON C7 FEELING ISOLATED? NEVER FEAR, LATEST TV HAS A FRESH CROP OF CLASSIC CINEMA TO SEE YOU THROUGH THE DAY & NIGHT

CAPTAIN SCARLETT Captain Scarlett is a 1953 American Technicolor Adventure film directed by Thomas Carr, that was shot in Mexico. The film is set in France following the fall of Napoleon, stars Richard Greene in the title role as a Robin Hood-type avenger and the Brazilian actress Leonora Amar in her final screen role. Of course those of us of a certain age will better remember Richard Green as Robin Hood in the famous and much loved 1960s TV series.

Directed by Montgomery Tully and written by Jack Dawe it stars Esmond Knight, Maudie Edwards and Meredith Edwards in a period piece that very much typifies the time. I’LL WALK BESIDE YOU I'll Walk Beside You is a 1943 British drama film directed by Maclean Rogers and starring Richard Bird, Lesley Brook and Percy Marmont. It takes its name from the song "I'll Walk Beside You" by Alan Murray and Edward Lockton which is played over the opening credits and used as a refrain throughout. A sailor falls in love with a woman he meets in a music shop, before they are parted by war and he loses his memory in battle. However, after the pair meet again by coincidence he starts to recover his memory with the help of an old tune. Ah sweet!

HYDE PARK CORNER Hyde Park Corner is a 1935 British comedy crime film, directed by Sinclair Hill and starring Gordon Harker, Binnie Hale and Eric Portman. Harker portrays a policeman investigating a crime in 1930s London, which proves to have its origins in the 1780s. The film takes its name from Hyde Park Corner in Central London where the events are set. It was based on a play by Walter C. Hackett and was made at Welwyn Studios. So what happens? In the 1780s, after an evening of illegal gambling, two of the participants fight a duel in which the wronged party is killed by a villain, who has just cheated to win a newly built house at Hyde Park Corner from him. Officer Cheatle of the Bow Street Runners is able to arrest those present for gambling, but is unable to prove that a murder has occurred. A hundred and fifty years later, the Officer's great-grandson, Constable Cheatle, is intrigued by reports of another murder at the same house at Hyde Park Corner. Cheatle sees this as a way of fulfilling his ambition to join the plainclothes detective branch. His attempts to solve the case are initially interrupted by Sophie, a petty criminal whom he arrests while she is shoplifting in a department store. Eventually, with her help, he is able to uncover the true culprit of the crime that has its roots in the fatal evening in the eighteenth century.

LIFE IN EMERGENCY WARD 10 No, not the early British TV series that gave rise to a whole genre. Here a new registrar, with a revolutionary heart lung machine he has bought from America, joins a small county hospital, and has to win over his colleagues, including the senior house surgeon. Directed by Robert Day, scripted by Tessa Diamond and Hazel Adair and starring Christopher Witty, Rupert Davies and Dorothy Alison. STEEL KEY Steel Key is a 1953 British thriller film directed by Robert S. Baker and starring Terence Morgan, Joan Rice and Raymond Lovell. Adventurer Johnny O'Flynn (Terence Morgan) attempts to track down thieves who have stolen a secret military formula for producing hardened steel; but ruthless others who will stop at nothing are also on the trail.

STOCK CAR Stock Car is a 1955 British crime drama film directed by Wolf Rilla and starring Paul Carpenter, Rona Anderson, and Susan Shaw. When her father dies during a stock car race, Katie Glebe (Rona Anderson) takes over the running of his garage, helped by American driver Larry Duke (Paul Carpenter). Katie struggles to fend off creditors, including the unscrupulous Turk McNeil (Paul WhitsunJones), who seeks to repossess her property. Further dramas ensue when Turk's girlfriend Gina (Susan Shaw) shows an interest in Larry. Now wouldn’t you just kow that a character named Turk would be unscrupulous, so un PC, but very much of its time.

PORT OF ESCAPE Port of Escape is a 1956 British thriller film directed by Tony Young and starring Googie Withers, John McCallum, Bill Kerr and Joan Hickson a clutch of big names from British TV and cinema. Two sailors, one Australian and one American, are kicked off their ship when it docks in London and are involved in a fight outside a dockside bar leading to a man's death. They go on the run and hide on a barge that belongs to three women. The two men plan to travel to Missouri, the home state of the American, but not all goes to plan.

GIRLDE OF GOLD Comedy centred on the adulterous Mrs Griffiths' corset in which, unbeknown to her, a fortune has been stashed by her husband, drunken, money-loving Griffiths the Hearse. A morality tale of adultery and underwear! LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7
