AN EVENING WITH

WHITNEY THE WHITNEY HOUSTON HOLOGRAM TOUR T

here’s no mistaking that Whitney Houston was one of the greatest singers of all time. She was the only artist to chart seven consecutive #1 Billboard Hot 100 hits, the first female artist to enter the Billboard 200 Album Charts at #1, the only artist with eight consecutive multi-platinum albums. She is even certified by The Guinness World Records as "the most awarded female artist of all time" with over 400 awards including 6 GRAMMYS, 22 American Music Awards, 16 Billboard Music Awards, two Emmy nominations and one win. Not forgetting her success on the big screen with starring roles in The Bodyguard, Waiting to Exhale, and The Preacher's Wife. Ultimately, Whitney Houston redefined what it meant to be an iconic superstar.

“For the first time since her tragic passing, fans will be able to see her live in hologram form as part of the sensational new concert An Evening with Whitney” Now, for the first time since her tragic passing, fans will be able to see her live in hologram form as part of the sensational new concert An Evening with Whitney – The Whitney Houston Hologram Tour. Appearing at The Brighton Centre on Saturday 7th March, the show has been created by BASE Hologram - the leading live event producer of cutting edge holographic live entertainment tours and attractions worldwide, in partnership with The Estate of Whitney E. Houston. Presented through state-of-the-art proprietary holographic technology, and combined with unmatched Broadway theatrical stagecraft, a live band, back-up singers and dancers. The show will of course feature Whitney’s classic hits including ‘I Will Always Love You’, ‘I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)’, ‘The Greatest Love of All’ and ‘Higher Love’ - a spectacular evening for the artist’s fans of all ages. “Whitney Houston was unquestionably one of the greatest singers ever. Full stop. She was magical on stage. Her alliteration was perfect, she could hit notes no one else could, but more than anything else she had emotion. When you listened to Whitney Houston, when you watch Whitney Houston, when you experienced what she could do on stage you realised it was magic”, said Brian Becker, Chairman & CEO, BASE Entertainment and BASE Hologram. “What we are creating here is a new type of theatrical concert

experience designed to capture that magic. Imagine a stage with a complete production associated with any major concert you’ve ever seen. On the stage are 12 of the best musicians you could find, plus back-up singers and dancers all celebrating the music and legacy of one of the greatest musicians of all time who will perform with them and interact with them and the audience - it truly is an experience like no other’. BASE’s CEO of Production, Marty Tudor, added: “What we are doing with this tour is celebrating her incredible life, and to do that we have to get every detail right. THE LANDLADY

WORKING FROM HOME am going for a scan at the hospital today and have been told that it can help if someone holds your foot while you’re in the process. The Big Daughter will be enjoying the undisputed honour of this trial. To make it slightly less unpleasant for her, I have painted my nails a lovely shade of pink and depilated my ‘toe-‘fros’, which is more effort than I usually make if I’m going on a beach holiday. A chance would be a fine thing and for now my many beach holidays are a thing of the past. Ironically, although I left the country specifically to avoid the two previous aborted Brexit efforts, I shall be stuck here when we finally leave tomorrow at the stroke of midnight. I have now been grounded at home in Landlady Towers for 6 weeks, which is my longest stretch in the UK in 10 years.

I

“I have now been grounded at home in Landlady Towers for 6 weeks, which is my longest stretch in the UK in 10 years”

7.30am I make breakfast for The Small Daughter. Timing is on a knife edge in order to avoid startling Lodger 1 (creepy) and Lodger 3 as she makes her way semi-clad to the bathroom. 7.55am Lodger 2 and Boyfriend thunder down the stairs and slam the door, which probably wakes Lodgers 3 and 4. 8.24am I go for a run. Timing is specifically arranged to avoid meeting lodger 3 when she leaves for work at 8.50am 10.30am Breakfast and ‘Popmaster’. Make some bread. 12.15pm. Have to take bread out of the oven early to avoid Lodger 3 in the kitchen as she comes home for lunch. Bugger! 2.30pm. As Lodger 4 goes into the kitchen to make some instant noodles, grab the 5 minute window to go through his ACTUAL window in order to clear the seagull shit from the gutter. Manage to get in and out and hide in my bedroom with said bag of excrement before he returns to his room. There’s something to be said for full-time employment…

I’m not complaining as Landlady Towers is a beautiful place and actually my favourite place on earth, even though my life is continually blighted by the comings and goings of my 4 lodgers. In my new homestaying routine, I have to be nimble and alert to avoid meeting any of them, not only for me, but for them to feel like they occasionally have the house to themselves. My routine for yesterday, for example, went something like this: 7.24am Lodger number 1 leaves for work.

GHOST STORIES ANDREW KAY TALKS TO ANDY NYMAN ABOUT GHOST STORIES AT THE THEATRE ROYAL BRIGHTON

When did your interest in horror and the supernatural start? Horror is the thing for me and I have been obsessed with it since I saw Jaws at the pictures when I was 12. The fear of that film was amazing, shortly after that the whole video nasty boom peaked, and then I met Jeremy Dyson at a summer camp and the thing that bonded us was that mutual love of horror. We both love horror, magic and dirty jokes. What I loved about Ghosts is that it is not dependent on modern technical wizardry but on clasic stage craft. I’m very glad you said that because that was really important to us. We both adore theatre but one of the things that drives us mad is that theatre is often too long, too boring and too expensive and all too often it tends to be for “clever people”. We wanted to create a play that was the best of what theatre is, a great story, great design and no projections – just traditional stage craft. When we made the film version we stuck with that too and we laughed and said this is like Buster Keaton film making. Those things that have been around forever work. One of the joys of Ghost Stories is that it has had this incredible eclectic draw for audiences. You get teenagers up to 80 year olds and it’s great to see an audience jump and experience what an adrenalin rush theatre can create. How important is collaborative work to you? I love collaborating, I love working with Derren Brown and with Jeremy Dyson. With the right person collaboration is the most powerful creative tool. You set aside your ego and what comes out is greater than the sum of two people, it’s a magical thing. How exactly does it work, are you in the same room? We generally are but at the moment we are so busy we are working over the computer on Skype. How do you fit in everything you do, stage, writing, directing…? I don’t know, at the moment it’s a little bit insane, right now I am writing and directing Derren Brown’s newstage show ‘Showman”, I’m filming Unforgotten for ITV, I’ve just written and published my new book… it’s all a bit insane but they’re all things I love, none of it’s a chore, they feel like hard work sometimes and creating can be very scary at times but I really love what I do. If you had to choose one of the somethings what would it be? Acting, acting acting 100%, my life has been a blessing and I simply love what I do. You’ve just completed a long West End Run in Fiddler On The Roof, how was that? I played Tevye for a year. It’s a massive undertaking and I adored it, its the story of my family really, and later in the year I go back into the West End to do Hello Dolly opposite Imelda Staunton which is thrilling. Will we be getting the same immersive experience when Ghost Stories comes to Brighton? Certainly in the auditorium, the dressing and soundscape will be the same. Sadly I will not be able to come down but we love the way this production looks and works. Have you tweaked it as time has gone on? We have done over the ten years it has been around from Liverpool through the Lyric Hammersmith, but now it is what it is, the definitive version. Are you working on something new for the stage? Yes Jeremy and I have started something new, we have to finish the film we are working on and I have to complete Derren’s new piece. But we are very excited about it, even though it is very early days. Theatre Royal Brighton from Tuesday 11 – Saturday 15 February atgtickets.com/brighton 0844 871 7650

humble pie

J

anuary is over but for my final foray I went along to Moshimo, a firm favourite of mine, for their Vegan Challenge. I went along to the very first one ten years ago and have been many times inbetween. It’s a brilliant idea and a brilliant evening from the people who created the internationally acclaimed Love Fish Campaign which promotes sustainable practices in the fishing and food industries. January was a vegan obsessed month, some of which I actually enjoyed and some, well less so, but I love the Moshimo gang and I was thrilled when they mailed me to see if I would like to be involved in a bigger way this year. Well I get that sort of mail all the time, usually from people who want me to stand up and talk. Not this time, far from it, this time they wanted me to put my head on the block and take part in the actual challenge.

sauce. Their response was positive and a few weeks later Darrek had put together a rather creditable pie that looked like a pie. It needed a bit of tweaking and the sauces were still required but I was pleased. At the next stage, sauces in place we tweaked the presentation, Darrek had made it rather cheffy but I wanted it to be boldly plain, pie and sauce! On the night the dishes were pretty amazing and in particular one which was a vegan take on the scotch egg, technically brilliant and super tasty. There were a few I didn’t like, one with a vegan food product with all the charm of an ice hockey puck and a few were key, and expensive, ingredients were lost. And there were a lot of dishes that involved deep frying which in eco terms is probably not quite right. But those I liked I really loved and the evening is one of the best nights out you can have with food, highly recommended. And you vote too, the winners moving on to the final later in the year. So how did our pie do I hear you ask. Well we didn’t win, nor should we, there were a couple of far more deserving dishes that night. That said people close by cleared their plates of pie and mopped up the sauces. Perhaps the audience of mainly committed vegans are not ready for their food to be fun or ironic – ah well I had a great time! Bartholomew Square, Brighton BN1 1JS moshimo.co.uk 01273 719195

“Maybe vegans are not ready for food to be fun or ironic” Now let me be clear, I am and long have been a confident and well practiced home cook, not a chef, far from it, but my friends tell me that I can deliver in the kitchen department. So off I went to meet Nicky, Carl and Darrek their chef. It soon became clear that what they were proposing was far braver than just asking me to prepare a dish, no, I was to create a a dish with their chef and in their name, a joint effort. Daunting for me and beyond trusting for them. All the dishes are meant to plant their roots in Japanese culinary tradition which I can understand, and of course they need to be small as the attending customers are expected to eat six of them plus some generous extras between. I’m not known for being serious, some may call me flippant and I certainly enjoy a joke, so my suggestion was that we create a pie and

I

n 2018 Latest Group CIC, embarked on a ground breaking project with schools from Brighton's very disadvantaged areas, in the top 10% of poverty nationally, to provide opportunities. We engaged with a local school whose catchment area is one of the most deprived in the UK. That initial project, that resulted in a TV progamme that was broadcast to huge acclaim, initiated a major thread for Latest CIC which has since seen us work with four Brighton schools, engaging with their inclusivity, LGBTQ+ and BAME groups. In each school we have enabled and empowered these groups to create their own very diverse TV shows. These shows are dreamed up by the kids, scripted by the kids and realised by those kids. Our role is merely to mentor and offer our professional expertise and facilities. This is diversity in action in our schools and in our community and the response so far has been immense with their amazing and unique output attracting not only audiences of their own age but right across the community. This year we will be bringing all six programmes together under the banner Schools Out and broadcasting them in a prime time slot on Channel 7 right across the UK, with a daily reach of over 200,000. Something that was unimaginable only a few years ago is now a unique and ground breaking reality.

At Hove Park School the BAME group have created Colour TV, a six part series in which they explore the wide range of ethnic groups represented in their school population. In it they talk about their language, art, music, food and their home countries. They discuss how they sit within their own communities and also how well their communities sit within modern British society. The show is vibrant, intelligent and… well colourful!

At Longhill High School their LGBTQ+ weekly group created a vibrant and incisive chat show in which they interviewed key figures of all ages from the gay community. Artists, writers, entertainers and politicians came under their scrutiny in a show that has been immensely popular – so much so that they are now producing series two.

A UNIQUE PROJECT MADE BY KIDS & FOR KIDS OF ALL AGES!

At Blatchington Mill School the LGBTQ+ group have created Out Of The Mouths… a series of comedy shorts that poke fun and expose the shortcomings of existing comedy formats. Their brilliantly crafted scripts and their performing talents make this anarchic series both edgy and hilarious, nothing and no-one is sacred as they rip into homophobia and prejudice.

At Longhill Hill School our first project was a drama series created by a group of young students who, for various reasons, had become disengaged within the school. The Gulldashians was written, directed and performed on Brighton Palace Pier and in the Latest TV studios and immediately attracted massive attention and acclaim when originally broadcast.

At Hove Park School their LGBTQ+ group wanted to create a series that would explore each of the letters represented in the acronym LGBTQ+. In each episode they tackle one letter, perform sketches that expose sterotypes and interview figures from the community each letter represents.

DIVERSITY IN ACTION A LATEST CIC INITIATIVE
