LOOK OUT
We did fod and drink on the show from time to time but never enough. Just before Christmas last, Latest Bill had a chat and suggested that I start a new series – “Go away and come up with a new format and title” he said. Well I’m good at titles so off I went and came up with the idea for my new show which is called Look Out! with Andrew Kay. The format is still chat and fun but it’s now going to be an hour long show with several guests, regular music spots and at last a load of food and drink. And right now we are making the first episode with a list of fab guests, some of whom you will know and love. In episode one I have Osaro Ogbeide, local celeb and brilliant creator of dance music. So brilliant in fact that he has written my new theme music and I love it. We will be talking about that of course but also about his inspirational new single which is already recieving acclaim globally – a real star.
“Brand new season starts 5th February with exciting new guests from across the UK! ”
S
ome of you will have noticed my absence on Latest TV channel over the last month. It’s not that he’s not been there, there have been lots of episodes of Queersay and AK Soufflé as well as Cook It! and International Chef Exchange, but AK has been concentrating on a new show that will start to screen at 9pm every Wednesdsay. We asked him what is going on and why the change. “I’ve been making programmes for the last few years. Cook It! was great fun and has been seen across the UK. International Chef Exchange went on to Amazon Prime and was seen around the world and Queersay has been very popular, so much so that I will be starting a new series of the global LGBT+ news review show very soon. There are already nearly 200 hundred episodes online that capture the changing world gay scene. AK Soufflé has been a real joy and I have had so many amazing guests from the world of TV, theatre and music as well as prominent business people, local politicians and social commentators – and some complete loons too. All of this has added up to nearly 100 episodes of pure joy for me as presenter and producer. When I originally came up with the silly soufflé gag, cheesy and full of hot air, I hadn’t thought it through but soon realised that as I am probably best known for my work with food and drink that it could be confusing.
He will be joined in the studio by Brighton Fringe award winner and comedy songstress Hannah Brackenbury. Hannah writes brilliant comic songs, satirical ditties in the comedy tradition of greats like Victoria Wood, her hero and the core of her award winning show, Victorious. She will certainly be bringing along her guitar so we can expect lots of laughs. There will also be one of my foodie pals in the studio to create some top nosh for us to try, well seeing as I have lost the food element in the show’s name why not put some in the actual show, how perverse is that. Over the weeks I will be lining up local stars and visiting ones too to bring you an hour of entertainment every week. And look out for my exciting new titles that have been brilliantly animated by motion garaphic wizard Daryn Moore. All in all it’s very exciting so thanks for watching so far and stay tuned, look out for Look Out! Look Out! with Andrew Kay stars on June ? at 9pm

TAI CHI CHUAR KEVIN BRYANT TEACHER WORDS & PHOTOS: DIANA FRANGI
B
righton based Kevin Bryant, founder of the Brighton Tai Chi Club, became a devotee of Yang style Tai Chi in 1995 when he started training in Boston, USA. In 1998 he moved to the UK and continued studying in London. Kevin teaches Tai Chi Chuan following the approach and methods of the Yang family, the family that more than any other, was responsible for the spread of tai chi throughout China and eventually around the world. Although many teachers in the UK teach Yang style, very few are passing on their instruction directly from the source. Kevin’s practice and teaching are reinforced by annual trips to Hong Kong to train with the family and by his London teacher – the leading Yang family exponent in Europe. Kevin’s classes are relaxed, laughter is encouraged as an important component of a positive learning environment. He teaches his own students according to their individual strengths, weaknesses and character. Kevin reckons the benefits of Tai Chi are broad and deep, covering body, mind and spirit. Medical research continues to uncover new benefits of practising Tai Chi: it lowers blood pressure, increases bone density, improves blood circulation and digestion, loosens and strengthens connective tissue, relieves joint pains and raises core strength - especially important for those with back pain. It increases mental clarity and creativity and heightens overall feeling of well being. Kevin says: “I had a book on Tai Chi as a teenager and I was attracted to its mystique. I liked its internal and philosophical aspects. The idea that a slow moving and sometimes static practice could also function as an effective, if not deadly martial art, was very seductive. When I had a taste of the art twenty years later, from one of its leading masters in the US, it sealed it for me. My mind, body and spirit knew they were home!” Classes are on Mondays, 11:00 am at Unity Studio,130 Lewes Rd, Brighton. And 4:30 pm at The Float Spa, 8 Third Avenue, Hove, and on

out of the blue we were happy to allow him to guide us. The griddled corn with a bloody mary ketchup was truly exceptional and quartering the cob lengthways is such a good idea, easy to eat, I will be doing that from now on. The peanut enhanced hummus is great too as are the interesting colcasia crisps that come with it, my only caveat is one of engineering, the crisps snap too easily in the dip, it doesn’t spoil it but it makes it challenging. The squid is sublime, simple as that, full of flavour and truly tender, something few places achieve. We both love liver and the calves liver with a croquetta, maple bacon and cavalo nero was stunning, next time two portions of that for sure, everything about it was perfection. We stuck with sharing for a main course, yes we had our hungry heads on, and we could not have been happier or more impressed. Chef has come up with an interesting riff on surf and turf that actually works. Monkfish, pulled leg of lamb, baba ghanoush and tabbouleh might sound a little out there for the grand old dame, the hotel, not Ms M, but it is a stunner. The whole loin of monkfish is precisely cooked, the loin simply falling apart and the aubergine a smokey delight. The tabbouleh was packed with vibrant fresh herbs and the whole is pulled together by amazing freshly cooked flatbreads, something even trad Eastern European places often fail to do. It was robust food, lip smackingly tasty and generous to a fault, whatever that might mean because it was faultless. Ms M was sated but in the interests of readers I had a pud, treacle tart, a tart of real pedigree to be sure, deep and unctuous, rib sticking joy! Cyan is a real step into the future for The Grand. A plus for city residents not just guests and visitors. Hotel restaurants have turned a massive corner and I can think of three exceptional ones that we should applaud and support, Cyan for sure! 01273 224300 cyanbrighton.co.uk
I
t hardly seems any time since I wrote here about a splendid lunch at The Grand. I love The Grand, I love the feel of its… well its grandeur! Anyway, I was lunching with a young friend and quite frankly was blown away by both the food and the excellent value offered. So much so that a week later I persuaded a group of friends to join me there for lunch and once again we were all blown away. A few weeks later I was surprised to here that GB1 was closing for a month for a refurbishment. Not that after the length of time that GB1 has been open a refurb is unusual, in fact it’s quite common, it just seemd odd when you have had two great culinary experiences so close together. Anyway, a month later the place re-opened with new decor and a new name, Cyan, and of course a new menu. The chef has given that a complete facelift and on my first visit I was more than impressed by the stylish dishes
“Cyan is a real step into the future for The Grand Brighton” and careful sourcing of prime ingredients. But let’s take a look at the new interior. It’s strikingly blue, more teal than cyan perhaps but had they chosen the industry standar cyan it would for sure have been a garish horror, no this looks good and is restful and for such a large space pleasant, with a sense of intimacy. The menu follows the fashion for sharing lots of smaller dishes and none of them crazily priced. I was joined by my good friend Ms M, a serious lover of good food and someone who I know enjoys the food sharing experience. We sat in the glazed conservatory and very soon had menus and cocktail menus. Well it was the run up to Christmas so in we went and enjoyed two very well conceived drinks, and again not stupidly expensive. I think it only right to state the Grand dame of Brighton hotels is not over-priced. Our waiter, fresh to the hotel but already in his stride, did a great job describing the dishes on offer and given that he had tried the entire menu

lyn paul’s farewell as mrs johnstone
BLOOD BROTHERS T
here are people who like musical theatre and there are hard core lovers of musical theatre. What’s the difference you may well ask. Well the hardcore will return to see a favourite show over and over again. I am hard core and high up on my list of favourite shows is Willy Russell’s brilliant Blood Brothers. I was lucky enough to go to the first night when it originally opened in the West End after premiering at Liverpool’s Iconic Everyman and starring as Mrs Johnson was Brabara Dickson. Dickson had already received acclaim for her performances in Russell’s Beatles musical, John Paul George Ringo and Bert, which I saw in Liverpool. She had until then been performing mainly on the folk circuit but this was her entry to theatre – and she was brilliant. In Blood Brothers she firmed up that reputation and for years after I thought that she was the natural choice to play the role. Then I saw Lyn Paul and my heart was turned, she plays the role brilliantly, heartbreakingly and to discover that she is hanging up her headscarf and touring the role for one last time means that I will no doubt be there at least once if not more! Bill Kenwright’s ‘Dazzling’ (Sunday Telegraph) production of the international smash hit musical Blood Brothers is back in 2020 from 4 February 2020 at Theatre Royal Brighton. This iconic musical has been visiting theatres across the country throughout 2019, performing to sell out houses and receiving standing ovations. ‘The definitive Mrs Johnstone’ (Manchester Evening News) Lyn Paul continues in the iconic role for her final performances. Lyn first took on the role in 1997 and has continued to lead the company on numerous tours across the country, including the final West End performances at the Phoenix Theatre in 2012. She has also starred in the UK tour of Cabaret in 2013 as Fraulein Schneider, in Boy George’s musical Taboo and in Footloose - the Musical. Lyn said: “I'm honoured to have been given the opportunity to undertake this "Farewell Tour" by my good friend, Bill Kenwright. It's such a privilege to be able to play Mrs Johnstone one final time”. Lyn rose to fame in the early 1970s as a member of the New Seekers. She was the featured vocalist on their 1972 Eurovision Song Contest entry,

‘Beg, Steal or Borrow’ and lead vocalist on the 1974 number-one hit ‘You Won’t Find Another Fool Like Me’. The groups biggest hit was ‘I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing’, adapted from an advertising jingle for CocaCola, which sold over 20 million copies and remains one of the 100 best selling singles in the UK. Considered ‘One of the best musicals ever written’ (Sunday Times), Blood Brothers, written by award winning playwright Willy Russell has triumphed across the globe. Scooping up four awards for best musical in London and seven Tony Award nominations on Broadway, Blood Brothers is simply
“I'm honoured to have been given the opportunity to undertake this "Farewell Tour". It's such a privilege to be able to play Mrs Johnstone one final time”. ‘Unmissable and unbeatable’ (The Spectator). This epic tale of Liverpool life started as a play, performed at a Liverpool comprehensive school in 1981 before opening at the Liverpool Playhouse in 1983, completing sell out seasons in the US, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Japan. Blood Brothers also ran in London’s West End for 24 years, exceeding 10,000 performances, one of only three musicals ever to achieve such a milestone. Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving story of twin boys separated at birth, only to be reunited by a twist of fate and a mother’s haunting secret. The memorable score includes A Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True. When Mrs Johnstone, a young mother, is deserted by her husband and left to her own devices to provide for seven hungry children she takes a job as a housekeeper in order to make ends meet. It is not long before her brittle world crashes around her when she discovers herself to be pregnant yet again – this time with twins! In a moment of weakness and desperation, she enters a secret pact with her employer which leads inexorably to the show’s shattering climax. Willy Russell is undeniably one of this country’s leading contemporary dramatists. His countless credits include Educating Rita and Shirley Valentine.
