WOMEN’S FOOTBALL IS INCREASING IN POPULARITY – JOHN MURPHY FROM SALTDEAN UNITED WOMEN COMMUNICATIONS TELLS US HOW SALTDEAN UNITED WOMEN FC IS A GROWING FORCE IN THE GAME

F

or most people in England women’s football is a new phenomenon inspired by the exploits of the English women’s senior team in the last two World Cups. For others, like the ladies of Saltdean United Women FC it is part of their daily lives.

“Football should be a community sport and that is what it is in Saltdean. So why not come and be part of the Saltdean Women FC family” Saltdean Ladies, also known as the ‘Tigers’ are a newly established side who were created in 2017/18. They are connected to Saltdean FC, play in Hill Park in Saltdean and train in BACA. It was the first time in the club’s history that they had a ladies’ team and the club are now looking to progress and build a youth team for the girls’ section. After recruiting many local players, the ladies competed in the Sussex County Women & Girls Football League (SCWGFL) in the 17/18 season where they finished in second position behind local neighbours, Newhaven Ladies. Saltdean Ladies gained promotion to the South East Counties Women’s League – Premier in 2018 and had a very successful year. They gained promotion yet again to step 5 in the women's pyramid but LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

also lifted the League Cup trophy after beating Ashford 2-1 in the final. In the Summer of 2019, the club decided to change their name to Saltdean United Women FC in a statement to make a clear signal of togetherness and unity at the club but also keeping with modern day thinking on equality. The Tigers are now competing in the London and South East Premier against teams such as Queens Park Rangers Development and Fulham Fc. This was a big step up for the team and the team are currently 8th in the league. Injuries played a big part in some poor results with a lack of squad depth hurting the team. Since Christmas however, there has been a change in mood and results. The Tigers with a couple of new signings in the January transfer window are finally playing the football they are capable of. The team finally understands that they are where they are supposed to be and each one of them should be proud of the work and commitment they have shown and now is the time to step up and push on to the next level that they are all capable of reaching. Now is the time to be ambitious. The short-term aim for the club is to stay up this year and then next year, the aim is very simple, promotion to the national league. This will only be possible with the support of the people of Brighton and if you are a member of this club and community when that happens it will be something special. Football should be a community sport and that is what it is in Saltdean. So why not come and be part of the Saltdean Women FC family, become a tiger and roar us on in Hill Park, in Saltdean, on Sunday 1st March at 2pm when the girls take on Dulwich Hamlet. Take the first step and stand with us. latest TV

THE LANDLADY

THE KETTLE CALLING THE TEAPOT?… n three weeks’ time, I will be going to The Sussex for an operation. Like anyone who’s never had an operation before, I am approaching it with trepidation, preparing for the worst and hoping for the best. After checking with my surgeon that it’s OK for me to travel prior to my procedure, I am now spending a week in Oslo in a rented apartment with The Cuban, who although at times mildly annoying, is practical and supportive. Nothing fazes him, so if I suddenly collapsed in front of him, he’d probably know what to do. We arrived at the apartment last night, which is a new build on Oslo Waterfront. In fact, it is the only finished block in the middle of a building site. For this reason, it was almost impossible to find and, when I had to call the owner three times trying to find it, he insinuated I was stupid.

I

negate the horrendous Norwegian supermarket prices. All this, I could’ve dealt with, but then I woke up on the first morning and discovered that the kettle didn’t work, which for a Brit like me is tantamount to water torture. I called the owner, who informed me that in order to make a kettle work, one had to fill it with water and plug it in. Really? After 50 years of doing the aforementioned, I didn’t realise that. I was so angry, that I then listed the other things that were wrong with the apartment and wielded Trip Advisor like the Sword of Damacles. Unsurprisingly, the owner arrived an hour later with a new kettle, dish scrubber and induction friendly pots and pans. He obviously still didn’t believe me about the kettle though as he tried the old one several times before plugging in the new. Still no tea towel though…

“I woke up on the first morning and discovered that the kettle didn’t work, which for a Brit like me is tantamount to water torture” Not a good start. In fact, if he didn’t already have my money, I would’ve gone elsewhere at this point. The apartment is so brand new, that we soon discovered that as well as lacking many items (a tea towel and dish scrubber, for example) certain items didn’t work. Apart from one large saucepan, the pans in the cupboards did not work on the induction hob, which is a bit of a bugger when you’ve arrived with a suitcase full of food from the UK in order to

R

e-invention is such a good thing and there is little doubt that in the world of fine food a good shake up can be a very good thing. I found this once again at a tasting of the new menu at The Salt Room. The Salt Room was always a bold move, a restaurant on a scale usually found in the capital. It oozed style, luxury and glamour and it championed fish and seafood and local produce. It has always amazed me that for a city by the sea there have been so few places over the years serving great fish. Now The Salt Room has a new chef, hot from the Michelin starred Ledbury in London and as a consequence a new menu, a great new menu. Fish is still at the forefront of this but alongside that fish and shellfish some very good vegetarian dishes and meat too. It’s a very tempting array and choosing was somewhat difficult.

one of their platters. We were defintely drawn to the suckling pig and the gurnard but the Surfboard of grilled and steamed shellfish, aioli vinaigrette and herb fries. Wow, the best squid since Latin In The Lanes closed, immaculate scallops, clams and mussels, huge prawns and crayfish and all piping hot! The fries were perfection and generous – are you spotting a theme here? Yes this is beautiful food but it is generous too, none of those tiny portions sat in the middle of a huge plate here, food to fill your heart and soul and your belly too! Desserts took me to an entirely new high. Mr L chose the peppermint choc-ice, a nostalgic flavour sensation that put a very big smil on his face. We also shared the fro-yo with rose, pisatchio and rhubarb, again stunning. Then on to my choice – burnt sugar tart with grapefruit and gin sorbet. Let’s start with the sorbet, bliss, vibrant and perfect in texture, had it been the dessert alone I would have been impressed and very happy but… burnt sugar tart is divine, it’s as if the weaver of the finest silk velvet had been asked to create a dessert, it is sweet yes but not cloyingly so, it simply delivers on every level of pudding perfection. I wanted more, not because it was mean but because I fear it might be addictive. The Salt Room is on top form, great food, generous portions and at a glance I sense an easing down of their pricing. Re-invention yes, I love it, other places should look hard and learn! 106 King's Rd, Brighton, BN1 2FU 01273 929488 saltroom-restaurant.co.uk

“It’s as if the weaver of the finest silk velvet had been asked to create a dessert” I was joined by old favourite Mr L, although he will hate the term old right now, but he is a great person to dine with and one who is happy to share dishes, so we started with one of their snack size dishes, tiny fish tempura with seaweed mayonnaise. Mmmmm delicious and generous too, but I will come back to that. As starters we shared brown and white Crab with violet artichokes, lemon, ginger, perfection, and again generous, immaculate seasoning, beautiful presentation… Our second starter was Grilled Castelfranco burrata, orange and anchovy and it was exciting and luscious, creamy burrata alongside bitter griddled chicory and vibrant segments of blood orange, explosive flavours and calming ones too. I have been to The Salt Room on many occasions but never shared

classic literature & classic scandal

CORRIE’S SIAN REEVES SWAPS THE COBBLES FOR THE DEVONSHIRE PARK THEATRE hen did you first hear about Lady Chatterley, did you read it? The sexual content of Lawrence’s novel was legendary but like so many legends one suspects that few actually took the time to read the work relying mainly on gossip and hearsay. The truth is that this is one of his finest works, beautifully crafted and couched in the honest vernacular of a working class game keeper. Considered sensationalist when first published and banned worldwide, Lawrence’s text caused outrage not just because of the explicit language, but also because it bridged social and class divides.

This impassioned tale of Lady Chatterley and her desire to live more than a half-life changed the literary landscape of Britain. Lady Chatterley's Lover was the last novel English author Lawrence wrote before his death in 1930. It was first published privately in Italy in 1928 and in France a year later but wasn’t published in the UK until 1960 for fear of prosecution over its explicit content. When it finally was, the publishing house, Penguin Books, was put on trial for obscenity. Sixty years after the scandalous trial of the publication, this beautiful new production reflects the monumental changes in attitude towards female sexuality. It is also an exploration of the scars of war and the dangers of toxic masculinity. Above all, Lady Chatterley is a passionate and optimistic love story. Trapped in a sexless marriage following her husband’s WWI disability, Connie is burdened with her duty of care and an increasing sense of isolation. She instigates a physically charged love affair with her gamekeeper, Mellors, flouting expectations and obligations. Now a sensual new stage adaptation of D.H. Lawrence’s controversial masterpiece Lady Chatterley’s Lover, comes to the Devonshire Park Theatre, Eastbourne starring TV regular Rupert Hill (Casualty, Coronation Street) alongside Phoebe Marshall (Witness for the Prosecution). Adapted and Directed by Ciaran McConville who comments; “It’s a privilege to bring this book to the stage. I’ve loved Lawrence’s writing since I was a teenager, but revisiting Lady Chatterley, I’m struck by how modern so much of it feels. It’s a comment on the fragility of masculinity and the need for an honest approach to our physical life. And it’s beautiful, too.” Devonshire Park Theatre, Eastbourne: 31 March - 4 April 7.45pm, Wednesday and Saturday 2.30pm matinees. Box office on 01323 412000 or online eastbournetheatres.co.uk

SULTANA JILIANA World traveller, writer & bon viveur Jilliana Ranicar-Breese relaunches her popular literary salon at The Verdict this March

I

f you haven’t met Jilliana Ranicar-Breese then you are missing out on enjoying the company of one of Brighton’s real characters. Latest’s own Andrew Kay wrote this about her: A Liverpool lass, Jilliana Lives a life that is peppered with drama Her vivid vignettes Are poetic Tourette’s And for her it is never “mañana”! AK has also read his own work at her salon and says; “The salon is a great night out and it’s a wonderful way of meeting and hearing other writers of both verse and prose. It’s fun, friendly and very entertaining and Jilliana has the ability to persuade some great voices to perform”. For some time the Sultana Jilliana, as she is known to friends, has been running her own literary salon in Hove. But the recent closure of her host venue has forced a change. Such a forced change to a force of nature merely spurs them on and true to form Jilliana is back from her winter sojourn and ready to relaunch the salon at a new venue. The word sojourn might suggest holiday but far from it. In recent months Jilliana has hosted and been guest at literary salons and events around the globe including New York and Tangier, and her own literary vignettes never fail to amuse and enchant her audiences, tales that reflect her extraordinary life, work and travels. We asked her about her re-launch; “The theme will be ‘Homage to Liverpool’ with our lovely Mayor Councillor Alexandra Phillips, a Liver Bird like myself, who is also a ‘Liverpool Poets’ lover and will be at the helm on our launch night which is March the third. Other Scouse writers featured will be the poets Naomi Foyle, AP Staunton, myself and Pauline Suett Barbieri. Also present will be Marita Wild plus an exciting list of entertaining local poets.“ The new venue for the salon is The Verdict in Edward Street and the owner Roxanne is kindly sponsoring the first event which means that entry is free. There will of course be a bar and refreshments available.
