aving got hitched myself in May, I can confirm that planning a wedding – however undemanding, unambitious and generally unBridezilla-ish you imagine yourself to be – will inevitably involve more problem-shooting missions and crisis talks than heading up the UN. This is excellent news for your CV; not so good for your nerves. So it’s in a spirit of charity (as well as girly excitement, naturally) that we offer brides and grooms to-be a special 15-page wedding guide (p5-19) this issue. Here you’ll find all you need to plan a local ceremony, plus an all-important, serenitypreserving countdown checklist. If you’re a fan of Channel 4’s Come Dine With Me then you’ll already know that there’s no greater spectator sport than competitive dinner party hosting. This year the Brighton and Hove Food and Drink Festival is launching Open House Dining, its own (un-televised and rather less bitchy) version of the show – and Andrew Kay has been coaxed into cooking. He explains how you can apply for a chance to rate his menu (and definitely not the contents of his underwear draw) on p27. On a different food tip, anyone interested in new theatrical experiences should turn to p33, where we preview Kindle Theatre’s ‘edible performance’ at The Coachwerks. Also in this issue, there’s an interview with Star Wars producer Gary Kurtz (p39), we review a health spa that understands the importance of a full English breakfast (p31), and Music Editor Jeff Hemmings has some answers to the question every music fan is asking: Beachdown – what the hell happened? (p36).

The perfect day Ease the stress of planning a wedding with Latest 7’s essential guide for the run up to the big day

hether your engagement is set to last two days or ten years, it’s never too early to start planning your wedding. In fact, we’d hazard a guess that you’ve had secret images of the big day forming at the back of your mind ever since childhood (although you may find that your desire to get hitched while looking exactly like Scott or Charlene from Neighbours has somewhat waned in the interim). We’re not just talking about one of the biggest days of your life – this is the point at which every woman (and man, if he’s pulling his weight) is called upon to turn event planner. It can be stressful. But the good news is that the planning will also be half the fun – and inside our 15page feature you’ll find everything you need to get started. These days, of course, anything goes. We’ve had the pair of aviation enthusiasts who exchanged vows while strapped to a pair of planes (with the indulgent vicar mic-ed up in a third). There was the wedding of the checkout assistant who chose to walk down the aisle…at Asda. And then there were the dog lovers from Italy who, earlier last month, invited 130 canines to their wedding – and even laid on a doggy buffet. But however creative you decide to get, there are some essential points to consider. First you’ll need a venue, and here you’ll find everything from restaurants to stately homes, hotels to music bars. We’ve also included a handy run-down of local approved

Elsewhere you’ll find catering companies to whip up a wonderful wedding breakfast; suggestions for keeping your guests entertained; jewelers for buying those all important rings; cool cars to get you to the church (or is that supermarket?) on time, and photographers to capture all those memories for you. The Royal Pavilion The Royal Pavilion, former residence of King George IV, combines Oriental extravagance with English eccentricity to offer a unique venue for civil ceremonies and receptions in the heart of Brighton. Ceremonies take place in the historic Red Drawing Room, which retains much of the original 1820s decorative scheme, while receptions take place in the King William IV Room. After the ceremony, photographs of the couple can be taken in the Music Room, followed by group photographs in the stunning Regency Gardens. For further information on civil ceremonies and receptions at the Royal Pavilion contact the Functions Team on 03000 290904 or visit www.royalpavilion.org.uk
Happen Events Wedding planners are often perceived as an additional cost on top of an already large budget when organising a wedding. Michelle and Hayley of Happen Events would like to dispel that myth. Although there may be an initial cost to pay for their services, more often than not, these costs can be recouped by the savings they can make through their business relationships with suppliers. The pair have an extensive database of contacts to make your wedding day exactly as you want it. Suppliers are selected especially for each couple and costs can be negotiated based on what they are looking for, therefore saving money along the way. The O Zone bridal and menswear September is an exciting time at The O Zone bridal and menswear boutique in Brighton’s North Laine as the first delivery of 2010 gowns from leading bridal designers Ian Stuart, Charlotte Balbier and Linea Raffaelli arrive. If you are planning a spring or early summer wedding next year, now is the time to start your search for that perfect gown. The O Zone has a hand-picked collection of bridal gowns from the finest designers, creating a unique and diverse collection to inspire you and make choosing your wedding gown a personal and fun experience. The first to arrive are gowns from award-winning British designer Ian Stuart. With his usual theatrical styling, Ian combines sumptuous fabrics with wonderful metallic and beaded laces. Ian's main objective with his gowns is to provide brides-to-be with a luxurious and diverse selection of shapes and fabrics to create their own individual style. The 2010 collection moves away from the all too familiar strapless gown to a wide selection of interesting necklines, with lots of ‘off shoulder‘ and sleeve options, all decorated with beautiful flower and sparkle detail. Charlotte Balbier launches her 2010 collection with the stunning Havana dress – a mixture of lace and organza. If you are looking for the ‘wow factor‘ then this is the dress for you! Charlotte has a passion for lace; show her a new lace and a new bridal gown is born. She follows fashion very closely and always keeps on top of the latest looks from the catwalk. She loves the Oscars award ceremony dresses and draws her inspiration from the shapes and styles worn on the red carpet. The 2010 collection has a strong vintage feel to it and is very feminine and girly. Follow the life of Charlotte Balbier at www.charlottebalbier. blogspot.com Linea Raffaelli bridalwear from Belgium is designed to be different. The O Zone is a premium stockist of the Linea Raffaelli collection – an expression of style, originality and quality. This collection is ideally suited to a more relaxed wedding, maybe a civil ceremony, a beach or a second wedding. The dresses are light and easy to wear, with no long trains – just beautiful fabrics and unusual designs. Bridesmaid and flowergirls are well catered for at The O Zone with a selection of over 100 samples to choose from in a wide variety of styles, colour and fabrics. For the groom The O Zone offers the latest in contemporary formal wear to hire or buy, with a large selection of waistcoats, cravats and ties to complement. The O Zone, 21–23 Church Street, Brighton. Opening hours 10am–5pm Monday to Saturday. Wednesday evening by appointment only. Tel: 01273 739500. Appointments appreciated. www.ozoneweddings.co.uk

They look set to becoming the musthave commitment rings of the season and a classic Hoye collection. Prices start from £625.
‘Naturist‘ is the new beaded collection from Jeremy. The look is very girly with bright yellow and purple beads complimented with flowers and butterflies – perfect for that beach party or holiday outfit day or night. Prices start from £75 for the simple flower ear-studs or pendant, going up to £225 for the bold double butterfly necklace. A celebrity fan of this new collection is the adorable Holly Willoughby. For other gifts, ideal for a wedding are the new charms including a musthave wonderful bird-cage with tiny swinging bird inside. This is part of the vintage charm range that includes an ornate picture frame, a bow and sweet heart padlock and key. The hotel is a beautiful Georgian Grade II listed townhouse set over three floors where modern oriental opulence meets Regency romance by the sea. Decorated by its owner – an interiors stylist – it is individual and sexy; a thoroughly 21st century bed and breakfast. All nine en-suite rooms are decorated in a highly individual style with original wallpapers ranging from stunning designs by Ralph Lauren, 1930s prints by Florence Broadhurst and vintage Osborne & Little to custom designed wallpapers by Alexander Beauchamp. The hotel is a grand old listed building, however the rooms are all very comfortable and stylish. All rooms have five star pocket sprung club beds; white cotton sheets; beautiful satin kimonos; TV and DVD facilities (choose the latest titles from their complimentary well stocked DVD library); broadband wireless internet access and Bodum kettles for making drinks. Bathrooms are also designed to complement with matt black mosaic tiles, chrome shower heads and polished chrome taps. Guests are also treated to their in-house, organic all-in-one hair and body wash in uplifting lemon grass, thyme and rosalina, and aromatherapy shampoo and conditioner by L’occitane. The cocktail bar also combines cool with comfort where you can sit on white leather banquettes and sip a fabulous cocktail made by their award-winning barman Deano, or just share a bottle of wine with friends. And they do recommend you get up for breakfast even if you had a late one the night before! The neo has a discreet, warm, sophisticated vibe and the staff go out of their way to provide a good ambience for everyone. So if you’re planning a wedding, going for it in party style or just want to chill out… they aim to make it happen. Steph, the owner, looks forward to welcoming you whatever the occasion. CITY SPEAK 21
Seann nce again, I write from the interminable chaos of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. It’s 5.27am. I’m camped out in my windowless room while my room-mate snores merrily away in his deep, drunk sleep. I’ve been here for twenty days. That might not sound like a long time – in relative terms, it’s negligible. However, a day is as long as it feels, and twenty days spent here can feel like twenty years. It seems fair to say I’m somewhat jaded. This state comes easily to me – I get it within five minutes of meeting most people. So, imagine how I react to a situation where exhaustion, boredom and home-sickness are inevitable. What’s so bizarre about this festival is that, however emotionally intense and exhilarating it can be, it’s extraordinarily repetitive. A huge percentage of it is dedicated to the same conversation: “What show are you doing? What venue? What time? How’s it been? Do you know anywhere that sells alcohol at 8am?” This routine of saying the same things countless times to countless people is reminiscent of working in a call centre. It seems odd to compare being at the world’s

Will ineapples, eh? They’ve got a lot to answer for. They’re prickly, they’re difficult to prepare, and – the final insult – one recently fell off its shelf in Tesco (Dundee branch) and hit a pensioner on the head. Clunk. The pensioner is now sueing Tesco for £4,000, blaming staff for stacking the pineapples improperly. The store, in turn, is blaming an as-yet unidentified customer for knocking the fruit off the top shelf and onto the pensioner’s head. Nobody is blaming the pineapple. The pineapple, the agent of all this destruction, has got off scot-free. “I was in the reduced section for the fruit, looking at some on the second shelf,” the pensioner croaked. “The next thing I knew – clunk – I got hit on the back of the head… I didn’t dare drive home, so I got them to phone my sister.” That’s right. The staff at Tesco actually telephoned the pensioner’s sister for her (the ones that weren’t busy assembling haphazard Jenga towers out of tins of pilchards, anyway) and asked her to come and collect her. That was nice of them, wasn’t it? They might have felt guilty, I suppose, but I like to think it’s what a decent person does when they’ve just seen an old lady get brained by a piece of fruit. And now the pensioner has launched a

largest arts festival to doing telesales, but fundamentally they leave you in the same condition: socially and conversationally worn out, jaded and in need of a drink. Once your routine is established (when you wake up, where you eat, where you drink), it’s easy to get stuck in a rut. And thus I live in this bubble. Aside from the odd bit of football news, I know of nothing that’s happened outside this festival. And what has happened inside? Well, some people have done some shows. Some have been good, some bad. And everyone’s drunk. Once you’re here, it’s easy to forget how spectacular this all is. But I’m not thinking that. I’m thinking about how much I miss vegetables and clean socks. Occasionally, I’m thinking it’s inexcusable how few shows I’ve bothered to watch. Mostly I’m thinking about Brighton, the North Laine, the southern weather. Scottish weather has serious anger management issues. The rain pours mercilessly. Sporadically, the wind has a five-second hissy fit, bursting in from nowhere to knock over chairs. Like everyone here, I’m tired. I’m going to bed. Provided I can sleep through my room-mate’s snoring.

legal attack on the store for what some would say was, essentially, her own bad luck. It’s not an isolated case. In 2004, a Wisconsin man sued a television company for turning his children into “lazy channel surfers”. Two years before that, a group of obese teenagers filed a lawsuit against McDonalds for making them fat. In a sworn statement, one of the plaintiffs said: “I like to super-size my orders”. Recently, a Romanian prisoner serving 20 years for murder launched a case against God, claiming his baptism was a legal contract under which, in exchange for daily prayer, the Almighty should have kept him out of trouble. What is wrong with these people? At what stage did it become OK to take the bad hand life’s dealt you and use it as a weapon against somebody else? If you gorge on McNuggets every day, you’re going to get fat. If you murder someone, you’re going to go to jail. Sometimes **** happens, sometimes pineapples fall, and no amount of pointing your flabby, TV-addicted, fruit-fractured finger in someone else’s direction is going to change that. Into every life a little clunk must fall. Don’t blame big business. Blame the pineapple. www.twitter.com/william_tells

DEFINITELY DANI 23
Dani n one day the news seemed to contradict itself. A story about how it is now okay to kill wild rabbits (including a piece showing different ways to do so) was followed by a story about the man that bombed Pan Am flight 103 hoping to be released from prison on compassionate grounds as he has cancer and would like to go home and die in his own country with his family. Does all that not seem just slightly the wrong way round to you? We would give compassion to a terrorist but whip out the poison for an animal that is only doing what it should be doing. Sometimes it can be disappointing to be human, as so many others seem bent on making no sense and ensuring that anything they consider to be worth less then themselves knows it. I am not saying that a rabbit nibbling on crops is not annoying – but in the great scheme of things, it’s their land that we’re trying to grown things in. On the other hand, we are
I
Dani thinks we’ve got our morals in a twist
“We are more compassionate toward people, who know what they are doing is wrong, than to animals” showing compassion to Abdelbeset Ali Mohmed al Megrahi, who blew up a plane full of passengers and killed 270 people. What compassion did he show for the people he killed, their families, and the effect of his actions for years to come? The fact that, if he travels back to his own country, other extremists may welcome him as a hero, just makes the entire situation worse. As the rest of the world enjoys the build up to Christmas, the families of those 270 passengers, crew and residents of the town the plane fell onto will be remembering the day a
Great train robbery Talking of things seeming topsy turvy or just plain unfair, why is it that we have to pay more to travel on the train before 9am? (The buses used to as well but have thankfully stopped). It feels as if they are penalising people for having to go to work. I’m not suggesting it should be cheaper before 9am than after, but jeez, cut us some slack. The assumption that just because you go to work you can afford to pay extra is ridiculous and insulting. It sometimes seems that the harder you try the less you are rewarded. Great isn’t it?
man decided it was up to him to decide other’s lives should end. Meanwhile, we are putting chemicals into rabbit holes in the hope of not having to deal with the problems they cause. It appears that we are more compassionate toward people, who know what they are doing is wrong, than to animals who are unaware that they are causing any problems when doing what they have always done.
Power mad, we forget that we built our houses on top of the grazing land of other species who were here before us and will be here long after we are gone. And yet we lose heart when it comes to punishing those who have done something truly bad. It seems to be that we have got our morals in a twist.

HARRY POTTER AND THE MAGAZINES HIDDEN IN A HOLE UNDER A PLANK OF WOOD IN THE FOREST ROUND
POPULAR CULTURE PRIMER No. 25 – THE WICKER MAN Originally titled The Policeman Who Gets Sacrificed By The Pagans In The Giant Wicker Man, The Wicker Man was released in 1973, directed by Robin Hardy from a script by Anthony Shaffer, and starred Edward Woodward, Christopher Lee, Diane Cilento, Ingrid Pitt, Britt Ekland, and Terry Nutkins as Lord Summerisle. The film is known for its exploration of ancient paganism, its biting wit and its sense of foreboding, as well as its famous ‘twist ending’. Here the entire film turns out to have been a dream experienced by Woodward while sitting on the toilet reading the Daily Express. The doorbell then rings, and it's the postman – played by Christopher Lee – delivering a wicker basket.) The film is also notorious for Britt Ekland's ‘nude dance’, although in this scene a body double was used – the naked body we see actually belonged to Dandy Nichols. LITTLE KNOWN FACT: In the film Edward Woodward is a suitable candidate for sacrifice because: 1) He came to the island willingly. 2) He is a practicing Christian. 3) He is a virgin. 4) He is a ‘man of power.’ 5) He is a fool. 6) His name sounds like someone farting in the bath.

ARIES (MAR 21–APR 20)
CANCER (JUNE 22–JULY 22)
LIBRA (SEP 23–OCT 22)
Arians are in danger at this time from excesses of all kind. Right now you should button up and button down all that can be buttoned up and buttoned down. Do it now.
Cancerians’ armour-like persona will lead them to believe that they are safe but right now someone is aiming for you with a pot of life’s cheap mayonnaise.
Librans’ tendency to waver between right and wrong could get them into serious trouble this week. It may sound overcautious but stay home and stay safe, for everyone’s sake.
CAPRICORN (DEC 21–JAN 19). Capricorns have a tendency to do the opposite of whatever I say here so I am tempted to give up on you. No really, I slave away over my charts and what thanks do I get? Well?
TAURUS (APR 21–MAY 21)
LEO (JULY 23–AUG 22)
SCORPIO (OCT 23–NOV 21)
AQUARIUS (JAN 20–FEB 19)
Taureans must also take precautions in all circumstances. Break out that kagool, let loose that Rainmate and stock up on prophylactics – you can never be too sure.
Leos enjoy danger and will relish the fragile vibes being felt this week, but it’s all a big front and really you are a pussycat. Go with it, curl up and enjoy a rest from all that bravado.
Scorpios will want to tough it out but believe me, the thingyness of the astral whatsits in conjunction with the planetary doobries means you’re better off staying at home.
Aquarians, how lovely you all are, but right now the conflicting planets mean that your scatter-brained selves are being bombarded with obsessive compulsions to tidy. How I laugh.
GEMINI (MAY 22–JUNE 21)
VIRGO (AUG 23–SEP 22)
SAGITTARIUS (NOV 22–DEC 20)
PISCES (FEB 20–MAR 20)
Geminis are never safe, and right now in Virgo you are more vulnerable than ever. Risk protective wear if you wish, but personally I would stay home with a good book.
Virgos will be loving this week’s atmosphere and feel totally at home with a policy of staying in and staying pure. You sad, sad dullards; break away and get a life for goodness sake.
For Sagis the sedentary lifestyle is commonplace and they need make no further provision in these troubled times. Enjoy a week of bedbaths, soft foods and TV repeats.
Pisceans should savour the magical mood this week and enjoy the peace that it brings. I would opt for a cod piece at Bardsley’s myself but then Roy does have rather large ones.

Preston charmed
with Jo Brooks
Has Kevin Bishop moved to Brighton? Plus Preston’s purchases and a surreal afternoon at MyHotel
It’s always good to know that our city is frequented by some of the country’s biggest names – and good for our house prices, too! So I’m excited to report that a new face has appeared on the scene in recent weeks – that of comic actor Kevin Bishop. Kevin has had a plethora of TV acting roles including Love Soup, Peep Show and the ITV2 hit sitcom FM (not to mention a childhood appearance in Muppet Treasure Island!) Kevin now has his own series – the snappily titled The Kevin Bishop Show. But he’s probably best known for his role in Channel 4’s highly popular Star Stories, where he spent hours in hair and make-up in order to send-up Simon Cowell, Peter Andre, Justin Timberlake and Robbie Williams. Kevin has been spotted out and about in Brighton a number of times lately – we know he likes a drink in the North Laine and I even bumped into him myself last Friday when leaving JBPR towers! If you are a permanent resident, Kevin, welcome. If not, perhaps you have a rival impersonator on the scene!
Mayhem at MyHotel I had a surreal, celeb-filled afternoon in TABLE restaurant inside MyHotel last week. I was having a catch-up meeting with the restaurant’s marketing manager, Angela, when a film crew arrived and starting setting up to film for a channel called Wedding TV. Things got weirder when Neil and Christine Hamilton appeared, followed closely by a stretched red mini full of girls in red t-shirts. It turns out the Hamiltons are regulars on the channel. We tried to ignore the madness and carry on with our meeting until Chris Eubank popped his head through a hole in the wall right next to our table. Chris, being Chris, wanted to chat about his new teeth, the event he was attending that evening and, well, you know, the price of fish! Chris now lives in the hotel and has done for eight months now – only in Brighton! First impressions
Hove resident and former Ordinary Boy Preston went on an unusual shopping spree after appearing on BBC Sussex’s The Danny Pike Show last Friday. After he came off air he went straight to the BBC Shop where he bought… a branded wooden spoon from the Radio 4 programme The Archers! Next stop was Lanes jeweller Jeremy Hoye, who made the singer a bespoke charm necklace featuring a miniature copy of the novel Brighton Rock, plus a sabre and a lion. Preston wore the necklace while doing a slot on Soccer AM the very next morning. To see the full interview log on to www.socceram.com

Phil Mills unveils plans for £300 million hospital revamp, and ‘60s fashion icon returns to Brighton
Hospital plans new hospital for Brighton has moved a step closer with news that planning permission will be sought before the end of this year. The £300 million project will completely revamp and replace the front of the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Eastern Road and be ready, if all goes to plan, by 2019. The project is one of the biggest the city has seen and will involve decamping patients and services to other facilities while construction is underway. The scheme will be equally disruptive to neighbours of the hospital and the thousands of motorists and passengers who use Eastern Road on a daily basis.
A
Barbara Hulanicki, founder of the iconic clothes store Biba, is returning to the city where she learned her craft for a screening of a documentary about her life. Barbara, 72, studied illustration at the old Brighton College of Art, now part of the University of Brighton, in the early 1950s. The film, by November Films, tells the story of the Warsaw-born fashion designer, including her father’s murder, her time in Brighton, and how she started Biba, the shop that changed British fashion in the ‘60s
A spokeswoman for the Brighton and Sussex University NHS Trust said: “We hope to receive back the second stage of plans from the Strategic Health Authority in September and then the next stage will be applying for planning permission from Brighton and Hove City Council – and we hope to do this by the end of the year. “Meanwhile, we are fully aware of local concerns and we intend to keep disruption to a minimum and to keep the local community aware of what is happening.” The main buildings at the front of the hospital were built nearly 200 years ago and, as most people who have been inside will attest, the wards are cramped and public areas are inadequate. The Trust said: “The new designs are for a building that is welcoming and easy to navigate, has enough space to treat patients with privacy and dignity, plenty of storage and natural daylight. “The panoramic views of the city and sea are potentially the site’s greatest asset. The new buildings will make the most of these views particularly from patient’s rooms. “The new building will also be sustainable and energy efficient, incorporate appropriate facilities for cyclists and provide green outdoor space.” If planning permission is approved then construction is expected to begin in January next year.
Sunday supplement Brighton and Hove City Council leader Mary Mears on extended opening hours eptember is generally a very busy month as schools return after the holidays. At the council it’s also a very busy time. We’re waiting nervously to hear back from the government about our application to the ‘Building Schools for the Future’ project. This is a multi-million pound bid to transform education standards in the city. This week we’re also launching a campaign to cut the illegal sales of alcohol to young people. We will be targeting licensees and

Cllr David Smith, cabinet member for culture and enterprise, at the Jubilee Library, which secured a million visitors after opening on Sundays
As of this weekend, it will be open on Sunday mornings and lunchtimes in addition to the afternoons. You may recall that last
year we took a similar decision with another much-loved city institution – the library – helping us secure a million visitors in just over a year. Speaking of positive, we recently got back our Place Survey results. The Place Survey is a government project to find out what people think of public sector services and the area in which they live. I am pleased to say that overall satisfaction with public services was very high but, more importantly, 86 per cent of respondents think Brighton and Hove is a great place to live. And why not? This is, after all, a fantastic city!

ANDREW KAY’S FOOD & DRINK 27
Food & drink Andrew Kay prepares his secret menu for Open House Dining andrew@thelatest.co.uk
Come dine with mystery I
f anyone else suggests I apply to appear on Come Dine With Me, I may have to do something I will regret. Don’t get me wrong, I love to watch the culinary car crash show – I simply don’t want to be on it and have people rifling through my underwear draw. So, you can imagine my reaction when I was approached by Pretty Clever Events to take part in their Open House Dining thing in the Brighton and Hove Food and Drink Festival this September. I was not prepared for the relentless chorus of Sams – yes, two of them – both equally insistent that I take part. To convince me they invited me along to a prototype evening they
“I simply don’t want to be on Come Dine With Me and have people rifling through my underwear draw” were holding. The promise of home cooked food was too much to resist so along I went, resolved to say no. Four hours later I was hooked, booked, and my menu was online and available for the public to book. How it works is simple: you sign up and cook a three-course dinner for a group of strangers, who then mark your efforts. It’s all anonymous, so bookings are made solely on the basis of the menu offered. There is a small registration fee, you file your menu, choose a pseudonym, and off you go. Diners can then log in and book to eat at your home, and they will have no idea who you are, nor you them, until the night. Okay, it sounds a bit crazy. But last night was great fun and the food was fab – well, apart from some misguided baby sweetcorn, vegan veal as I call it. After dinner your guest will be given forms to fill out and score your efforts across a wide range of criteria – and not, I hasten to add, on the contents of your bedside cabinet. My menu is up there and available to the first six comers for a bargain £10 a head. The price includes a little wine, which has been donated by sponsor Ten Green Bottles, but if you want to drink lots then bring some with you. The overall winning chef at the end of the month will win a prize of a day in the kitchen at Sam’s of Brighton, a fun experience that I can heartily recommend. If you wish to take part as a chef, bookings are still being accepted throughout September. To dine, simply see what is available online. And no, I cannot reveal my code name – you will simply have to guess. To cook or dine go to www.prettyclever.co.uk/open-house-dining or www.brightonfoodfestival.co.uk
And for my next trick… Anyone who came to the food festival last year may have caught sight of me at the Live Food Show where, for two days, I presented live cookery demonstrations from some of the city’s best chefs. It was a gruelling experience for me in terms of stamina but a thoroughly enjoyable one too. Last year I kicked off the event by boning a chicken live – no, not a live chicken, a live demo – and then preparing three dishes from the one bird. This year I have to top that, so be there early on Saturday 12 September for kick off at 11am. The show continues on Sunday with another host of chefs and plenty of top tips and treats to taste too. Full listings are on the food festival website given above. There are 50 seats each day (not bookable) at the free event, and there’s plenty of standing room too.
Travel rugs at the ready My favourite Food and Drink Festival event is The Great Big Brighton and Hove Picnic on Hove Lawns on Saturday 26 September – a huge picnic on the seafront celebrating the best of British traditions. Bring along your hamper, tartan travelling rugs and thermos flasks, and pack a lone sandwich or a banquet – you can do it on a budget or you can do it in style. Why not theme your al fresco feast: a Victorian picnic, an Edwardian feast or a simple ‘60s affair with soggy cheese and tomato sandwiches, hard boiled eggs and stewed tea – dress the part, too, if that takes your fancy. If you have a favourite picnic dish, why not make lots and pop it on the sharing table? If you can’t cook, pick up a picnic on the day from the food market next door. The Great Big Brighton and Hove Picnic will also be hosting the Food Festival Children’s Cake Making and Decorating Competition. Also on that day, wine expert and connoisseur Henry Butler will be running a Fizzy Pop Connoisseur Tasting, comparing classic soft drinks with new, and with some healthy alternatives. Swirling, sniffing, slurping and spitting will be compulsory! To win a place on Henry’s tasting panel email andrew@thelatest.co.uk with your name and age, putting fizzy pop in the subject box.

HEALTH 31
Spa daze Zara Baker finds The Day Spa at Whittlebury Hall a perfect getaway here may be a difference of opinion on spa breaks, but one thing’s for certain; when it comes to planning a wedding, a break away for some R&R is essential. Even the most organised ‘Bridezilla’ will find herself facing a stressful situation that leaves her screaming ‘I need a rest – get me out of here!’ Spas are a popular choice for hen parties, for the couple in the run up to their ‘big day,’ or even as a honeymoon getaway. If we could, we’d go for all three… A year after our wedding, The Husband and I were on a quest for relaxation and rejuvenation. The Day Spa at Whittlebury Hall is an oasis of calm just over two hours’ drive from Brighton in Northamptonshire and set opposite a stunning golf course. The bustle of everyday life slipped away as we turned into the quiet road. As we were checking in, a hen party were checking out – this was one hen do that hadn’t ended drunkenly on West Street. The group were excited, happy and relaxed – as was every one we passed. Whittlebury Hall attracts all clientele from young families to older couples and groups of friends. The building is elegant yet unpretentious, vast yet comfortable. What a getaway it was. Fruit, water and wine awaited us in our first floor club suite. Our room was situated on the first floor above the main entrance, with a stunning balcony and views over the golf course. We dropped off our luggage and checked in – this time at The Day Spa to confirm our treatment times. I arrived for my express facial and was led to a small, comfortable room. The therapist began with a consultation on the products I use and my cleansing routine. It was a great learning experience as I learnt which products best suited my skin type. The therapist could tell from my skin that I drink enough water and, with all the skin care products on the market, water is the one beauty product they all swear by. I went through a phase of over-exfoliating, ultimately drying out my skin and leaving my complexion dull. I now only exfoliate once or twice a fortnight. The Day Spa use Elemis products. A thorough cleansing process was followed up with a gentle rose exfoliating product. A calming, refreshing cool mask was then applied and left on as gentle music played in the background. After five minutes, the mask was gently cleansed away. Moisturising cream and eye cream were then applied to leave me with a bright complexion. While I was being pampered, The Husband was enjoying his own form of relaxation: a back, neck and shoulder massage that worked out all the knots and combined invigorating oils to make him feel fully recharged. Afterwards, it was time to relax some more, letting the rejuvenating products work their magic. We enjoyed a lazy few hours before dinner in the Aston restaurant, where a delicious three-course meal included a main course combining carbs, meat or vegetarian option, and vegetables. After a comfortable night’s sleep at Whittlebury Hall, breakfast proved the perfect end to our stay: this may be a day spa for health and nourishment but they know full well that a traditional English breakfast goes down a treat. The last supper Kindle Theatre invite you to a dinner party with a difference n ‘edible performance’ is how Kindle Theatre are describing their latest production – though exactly what it will taste like is something they’re keeping very close to their chests. A young Birmingham based company, Kindle make multidisciplinary works praised for their immersive quality – so it was only a matter of time before they started roping in the audience’s tastebuds as well. “What we wanted to do was create a show in which part of the story could be experienced through flavour,” says coartistic director Olivia Winteringham. “We’re also interested in the rituals of eating, in food as a communal experience.” In Eat Your Heart Out, which takes place this week at Brighton project space The Coachwerks, the audience are cast as the last remaining subjects in an apocalyptic kingdom. Invited by the queen to a final banquet, they will at one point be presented with a “not very conventional” taster menu – the contents of which are a secret, though previous shows have included such delicacies as ‘edible flowers’ and an ominous sounding ‘meat cake’. After all, if it really was the last supper, you probably wouldn’t expect to find bread and wine. More of a performance installation than a conventional piece of theatre, Eat Your Heart Out takes inspiration from the intense tableaux of Caravaggio, and will see the

HANNAH MONTANA: THE MOVIE (U) 10.15am
What’s on this week
Funny People (15) Dir: Judd Apatow The ‘bromance’ comedy king, Apatow, returns again with the tale of stand-up comic George (Adam Sandler), who discovers he has a year to live. He takes a shine to upand-coming comic Ira (Seth Rogan), who becomes his assistant. Friendship develops, a twist occurs. Showing at Odeon and Cineworld The Final Destination 3D (18) Dir: David R Ellis You know the concept: there’s a group of cute-looking teenage kids who narrowly escape a violent death due to one of them handily having a premonition. Useful tick that. Not content to let matters lie, Death becomes a sore loser and pursues them with a series of ghastly accidents. In glorious 3D. Showing at Odeon and Connaught The Time Traveller’s Wife (12A) Dir: Robert Schwentke A take on Audrey Niffenegger’s best-selling romantic novel, with Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams as a couple cursed by a rare genetic disorder that causes him to jump back and forth in time when stressed. Needless to say, theirs is an unusual courtship, with more than its fair share of obstacles to overcome. Showing at Cineworld and Odeon 500 Days Of Summer (12A) Dir: Marc Webb Always good to have an indie romcom offering, which is exactly what this is. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Third Rock From The Sun) plays Tom, a greetings card writer who falls for his boss’s new secretary (Zooey Deschanel) on Day One. By Day 31, love is in the air. Fast forward to Day 488 and it’s not so rosy. Back pedal for more of the story, which continues to unfold in a less than linear fashion. Showing at Cineworld and Odeon Broken Embraces
Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince (12A) Dir: David Yates Teenage hormones are bubbling over along with the potions of Hogwarts as our leading trio find they’ve got more to battle with than Voldemort’s evergrowing presence in the world, although that is troubling them too. With star turns from Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson. Showing at Cineworld and Odeon Last Chance Harvey (12A) Dir: Joel Hopkins Marooned in London after missing his flight home, Dustin Hoffman’s Harvey meets Emma Thompson’s Kate at the airport bar. An unlikely friendship is struck up, with the possiblity of a romance on the horizon. For Harvey, who has lost his job, there’s nothing to lose but his sense of adventure. Showing at Duke Of York’s Moon (15) Dir: Duncan Jones In an alternative reality, Sam Rockwell is working on the moon solo, fulfilling his three-year contract to harvest the Earth’s new clean fuel. His closest thing to company is computer GERTY (voiced by Kevin Spacey). Near the end of his contract he has an accident with one of the machines, waking up in the infirmary to a story that turns his trust in the company and GERTY on its head. Showing at Odeon and Duke of York’s Broken Embraces (15) Dir: Pedro Almodóvar The acclaimed Spanish director is reunited with his Volver star, Penelope Cruz. An older Spanish writer – Harry Caine – looks back at the wounds made 14 years previously when he was directing his last movie. Look out for plenty of movie references (including the mixing of Michael Caine with his famous alter-ego Harry Palmer in the protagonist’s name). Showing at Duke of York’s © Sony Pictures Classics

A laughing matter
STAND-UP COMEDY | ART 35 Nick Vivian: Can’t See The Wood From The Trees
Victoria Nangle ponders the order of things – especially at a comedy night
unning order matters. Fact. If you’re opening or closing then the booker thinks you’re strong enough to either start them laughing or plaster a smile on their faces that’ll last until they’re out the door. It’s terribly flattering to be given one of these prestigious places. It also means loads of pressure. And, if you don’t get the required effect, that’s going to attract even more attention. Which is why it’s usually the more experienced comedians that get these places. I’ve opened second acts a few times, and I’m happy to report it’s gone well. It’s a nice spot, and one that a Brighton comic gigging in London and keen not to miss the last train may covet. I generally bring a number of London mates along to any gig I play in the Big Smoke as it’s the only chance we get to catch up. I don’t take to visiting London on a whim, there has to be a reason to prise me away from the seaside. Because of these numbers, new act night bookers like to put me on in the second half, fearful that, as soon as I’ve been on and the break arrives, my entire entourage will
R
“More than once have I been heralded onto the stage thoroughly unprepared” disappear. It’s a fair assumption – and baggsies me a nice spot. Being placed inbetween comics you like is also cosy. If you like them then your comedy is likely to be sympathetic to theirs and run on nicely. It also means that the momentum of laughter from the act before increases the laughs you’d normally get for at least your first three gags. If they like those, you can just ride the wave from then on. Generally, in new act nights, the order of play is random. The booker hasn’t always seen everyone who’s playing, they’re taking a gamble, and in some instances they’ve just got loads to get through. Then the best you can hope for is to be told who you’re following – a jewel of a piece of information. More than once have I been heralded onto the stage thoroughly unprepared when the compere decides to change the order to what sounds pretty in his/her head instead of the running order on the piece of paper we – the comics – have taken as gospel. So if you’re starting out and someone offers to swap places – don’t.

Dream on New exhibition Dreamscapes opens at contemporary art gallery Art At Five Lose yourself in dappled woodland scenes and sparkling florals at Art At Five this week, where new exhibition Dreamscapes showcases the work of three artists: Nick Vivian, Kim Anderson and Yvonne Coomber. All take inspiration from the magic and enchantment of the natural world, in spaces both real and imagined. Intrigued by the fluctuating effects of light, Vivian paints in a vibrant kaleidoscope of colours to produce work infused with serenity and a sense of mystery. Brighton-based Anderson, meanwhile, explores the transience of nature with its ever changeable moods, while Coomber’s paintings draw on the untamed countryside of Devon. Beach-downer The fall-out from the eleventh hour decision to pull the Beachdown Festival last weekend will likely have repercussions for some time yet. Despite the arrival of some last minute private funding, it seems the organisers still didn’t have anywhere near enough to pay all the suppliers – three of whom asked for 100% of their money up front just two weeks before the event – and to honour contracts and agreements, not only from this year’s festival, but also from last year’s, from which there were still outstanding debts. Once the police got wind of the situation – and bearing in mind the strict licensing conditions placed upon Beachdown – there was no option but to cancel. More than half of the tickets had been sold and it was likely there would have been a substantial last minute take up. Unfortunately, it looks like punters who had purchased tickets more than a week before the festival will have trouble getting any compensation, as all ticket proceeds would have been eaten up by Beachdown’s preparations for this year. Debate will rage as to whether it was worth paying Grace Jones £100,000 (£80,000 up front) for what is, in effect, a boutique festival. Thankfully, organisations like Concorde 2 and Latest Music Bar stepped in to provide an outlet for the large number of Brighton based bands who were set to play the numerous stages. There can be little doubt that, barring a miracle, Beachdown will be no more. But Brighton is still ripe for a festival on its

Andy Morton talks to Gary Kurtz about Star Wars and the role of the film producer
INTERVIEW
Gary Kurtz is a veteran film-maker, best-known as the producer of Star Wars and its sequel The Empire Strikes Back. He first worked with George Lucas on American Graffiti in 1973 and co-founded special-effects house Industrial Light & Magic with him in 1977. Currently a partner in production company Corona Films, he gives Andy Morton an inside perspective on how movie-making has evolved during the course of his career… Production doesn’t seem to have the same high-profile and plaudits that top-name actors and directors do, certainly these days. What are your feelings about that? All the big name producers of the ‘40s, ‘50s and ‘60s have disappeared from the scene. The people who get producing credits tend to be money people: the producer’s credit has been diluted and that’s why so many films have thirteen, fourteen producers and executive producers. My feeling is a working producer is someone who knows how to make movies. I worked on a lot of low budget movies: on camera, as editor, production manager, even pyrotechnics and special effects. It’s critical that the relationship between producer and director be mutually beneficial. Did you have more creative input when you started your career?I I’ve always had a lot of creative input into the films that I’ve done. The producer’s primary job is to insulate the director from all the problems. That doesn’t happen as often as it should, which is one reason why some pictures are so expensive. It’s easier to throw money at a picture than to have a talented creative team. The most interesting pictures made in the last ten years have been low-budget pictures. How did Lucas and Industrial Light & Magic change moviemaking? The whole ‘summer blockbuster’ thing; the predominance of visual effects… Star Wars was made for ten million dollars. It was considered a low-budget film at the time. ILM went on to become a big special effects house but in the beginning it wasn’t that at all. I put together the original team just for Star Wars. Films back then were released in an entirely different pattern. Now, if films don’t do the bulk of their business in the first two weekends, they’re considered failures. Back then films were doing better business in the fifteenth or sixteenth week than the first week. Is it a problem attracting young film-makers into production? Are they all set on being directors, seeing their name up in lights? I would think that directors and writers are perceived as being most glamorous. Ironically, because of changes in technology, it’s easier to get small films made; you can do it much less expensively than twenty years ago. Many films are made on smaller budgets so seeing your name in lights isn’t perhaps so much of a goal. Sadly, the studios don’t seem to be so interested in small films – even good smaller films – so they have to be made by independent companies. Gary Kurtz will be a special guest at The Space at Latest Music Bar on Tuesday 8 September, along with comedian Rhona Cameron. www.thespace.me.uk

friday 4 Big Brother: Live Final Channel 4, 8.30pm & 10pm Whether all your mates are round and you’re having a great big party, or you’re snuggled up on the sofa alone with a massive bag of popcorn, this is event telly. Davina draws out the suspense as one by one the remaining occupants of the house are called out and quizzed. The winner’s face is bound to be a classic.
Friday Night With Jonathan Ross BBC1, 10.35pm Jonathan’s back and making Friday nights a bit more interesting telly-wise again. He kicks off the new series with a bunch of his old pals – for this read Jamie Oliver and Ricky Gervais – as well as pop’s most sensitive soul Mika, who’s not known for liking the interviewing.
How I Met Your Mother E4, 7.30pm Twenty- and thirty-something singles and couples lend themselves well to sitcoms – just look at Friends – and this is no exception. Nicely written, this latest US comedy import is finally on at a more sensible time. Starring Alyson Hannigan, of Buffy fame, as part of a good ensemble cast.
