13 L7 INTERVIEW As new Keats biopic Bright Star hits the big screen, leading man and unlikely Hollywood heartthrob Ben Whishaw chats about romantic chemistry, playing the famous poet, and starting to write his own love letters
Columnist Idol is here! Yes we’re really calling it that, no we’re not embarrassed, and yes, we’re still accepting 450 word submissions from anyone who thinks they have what it takes to write a weekly L7 column about life in Brighton. So far we’ve received entries on everything from being a failing musician, a yoga virgin or a 20-year-old granny, to the overwhelming melancholy induced by the fake tigerskin rugs still visible through the window in London Road Woolies. We even had one about bog-blockers, which really made our cereal go down nice on Monday morning. Anyway, you’ll find our first wannabe columnist in City Speak, where you can also read resident voices Heather Mills and Will, writing, respectively about global ecological meltdown and being ID’d by a supermarket for a half bottle of vodka (although you do kind of wish it was the other way round). Elsewhere, we have an interview with Ben Whishaw, who stars as Keats in Oscar-winning director Jane Campion’s new film Bright Star, which hits cinemas this week. Focusing on the poet’s legendary romance with Fanny Brawne, it called for some highly convincing chemistry with co-star Abbie Cornish – as Ben explains in this week’s L7 Interview. You’ll also find previews of Michael McIntyre’s first arena tour and Seth Lakeman’s biggest Brighton gig to date, and a round-up of the best places to celebrate Fireworks Night. Meanwhile, you can glitter your way through the recession with contemporary jeweller Jeremy Hoye, who unveils his new collections in our cover feature.

Latest diary Tim Richardson snaps the BAHBAs and the new AIDS memorial unveiling
The unveiling
At a very moving ceremony on Friday 9 October, David Furnish, the civil partner of famous musician Sir Elton John, unveiled the new AIDS memorial at the New Steine, Kemp Town. The stunning sculpture was designed by talented local artist Romany Mark Bruce, who won the commission for the memorial in a local competition. This landmark modern sculpture in bronze is four metres high and depicts two soaring figures, reflecting the shape of the AIDS ribbon.

’ve discovered that in the last year and a half I have only bought myself two items of clothing. I realised this when I went out to meet a friend and ended up wearing a top I have owned since I was 12. It doesn’t fit me anymore, but my ‘style’ hasn’t changed enough for me to bin it. My fashion doctrine is ‘T-shirt + jeans = adequate’. Of the two items I have bought, one was a pair of jeans and the other was a top to wear to my school after prom. (If you’re not familiar with the concept of an after prom, I’ll just say that it is a miracle that the top in question is not covered in other people’s vomit.) I don’t buy clothes unless it is absolutely necessary; it has now reached that point. I started college recently and within five days I had run out of clothes. I had been so desperate to leave behind my bright red school uniform, but now I understand how good it was to me over the years. The monotony enabled me freedom to do more important things in the morning than choose my trousers. Back then I had time to read the nutritional information on a box of Cheerios or to spell my name in squeezy marmite; I can never do that anymore. I now need to spend literally minutes deciding what to wear.
I’m clueless! I don’t know what’s hot! Whenever my sister asks me to judge her outfit, if I like it, she changes, but if I hate it, then it’s obviously stylish and she leaves the house, radiating fashion confidence. My solution to my lack of creativity and finesse in the wardrobe department is to wear long coats that hide my clothes. I’ve accumulated three long coats. Only one of them I bought myself. The other two I adopted as they were being abandoned by friends and relatives because they were ‘last season’. I occasionally get comments about why I’m wearing an overall during summer, but they’re always warm and disguise the ugly truth that I’ve been trying to pull off the same outfit for two days running. As long as I change my underwear then what’s the issue? As much as I resent it, I’m going to have to buy some new outfits. The T-shirt I’m currently wearing has holes in it, I only own one pair of trousers that hasn’t got a huge tear down the side and my sister has started avoiding eye contact with me in public. The trouble is, I haven’t been shopping in such a long time I don’t know where to start. Is Marks & Spencer still à la mode?

days of headlines with Phil Mills
Silly season continues, and Lewes MP speaks out against Government prying
I
t didn’t get the name Silly Sussex for nothing. The trend that started at the time of the Prince Regent and the building of the incongruous Royal Pavilion continues to this day. “Nutters with Putters” was probably the pick of the headlines that followed The World Crazy Golf Championship, held in a howling gale in Hastings, where Tim “The Ice Man” Davies was defending his title. Mr Davies later said he was working in secret on a revolutionary new “dynamic” putter in collaboration with a team of university scientists. Another team of boffins, meanwhile, has announced it is taking part in something a tiny bit more profound, namely a re-enactment of the birth of the universe. The physicists from the University of Sussex are now among 3,000 scientists involved in one of the largest research laboratories in the world, near Geneva in Switzerland. The project, called ATLAS, is one of the two multi-purpose particle physics experiments at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), a circular, 27km-long accelerator ring located about 100 metres underground across the French-Swiss border.
The news proves that, when it comes to brainy people, Sussex has more than its fair share. That’s certainly the conclusion of research carried out by the lecturers' union UCU who found that our Parliamentary constituencies house proportionately more people with academic qualifications than anywhere else in the country. Sussex shoppers are pretty clever as well. Asda has given up on Brightonborn Katie Price’s knickers and won’t sell any more due to lack of demand, while thousands of women are unfastening bras and donating record numbers to Brighton and Hove City Council’s recycling appeal. Meanwhile, Sussex Police is trying hard to win public backing for its campaign of swearing in
civilians and arming them with speed cameras to trap pedalpushing drivers who drive too fast along rat runs. Speeding drivers are a dangerous nuisance but is a scheme that potentially exposes locals to conflict good for neighbourhood relations? Spying seems to be a favourite pastime in this country, as Lewes MP Norman Baker pointed out. He is said to be deeply concerned about the extent to which the Government wants to pry into people’s lives. He’s protesting about the Government’s decision to spend £1 billion modernising equipment to collect data on individuals at a time when we are already one of the most watched and listened to peoples in the world, and when the country is broke. But then common sense appears to be in short supply at the moment. The police service is spending valuable time and resources issuing guidelines to officers instructing them to avoid greeting members of the public with such traditional sayings as “evenin’ all” and “afternoon”. The guidelines say the words are subjective and could cause confusion among those from different cultural backgrounds. Other words officers are asked to avoid are businessman, housewife and child because, apparently, they have negative connotations. Dixon of Dock Green would turn in his grave and many senior police, privately, are complaining. One told Latest 7: “We want to focus on policing the streets – not policing the speech.” That’s not just Silly Sussex. It’s Bonkers Britain. Do you feel spied on by the Government? comment@thelatest.co.uk
latest inbox comment@thelatest.co.uk Dear Editor, as the Chair of the crossparty review on student housing, we have put forward 37 sensible and simple recommendations, such as making students more aware of rubbish collection days and extensions to the noise patrol teams. Before any sensible measures on tackling student housing can be implemented the leader of the City Council will have to say which recommendations her council will use. At the beginning of the year universities, residents, students, councillors from all parties and external organisations took part in the review to deal with student housing in the city. The work was completed back in April. Many people participated in the review and have asked what has happened to the work, and rightly want to see some action soon to help improve the lives of both students and permanent residents in the city. For more details on the recommendations and on student housing please visit the council website or email me at anne.meadows@brightonhove.gov.uk. Anne Meadows Labour Councillor Moulsecoomb & Bevendean Ward I just wanted to say a big thank you to Latest 7 for the free dinner and tickets to see Al Murray. It was a great evening! Henry Allingham
Brighton and Hove City Council leader Mary Mears on Remembrance Sunday
T
he defining image of last year’s Armistice Day was that of the three surviving British First World War veterans laying wreaths at the Cenotaph. Among them was Brighton’s Henry Allingham, 112, who was at the time the oldest Royal Navy veteran and the oldest man in Europe (he eventually became the world’s oldest man). He led the silence alongside Harry Patch, 110, formerly of the Army, and Bill Stone, 108, who was in the Royal Navy.
It was to be their final remembrance. All three died this year and Henry received a hero’s funeral in St Nicholas’s Church, Dyke Road, in July. They are gone but the memory of their great service should live on. Never should they or Remembrance Sunday be only about the past. Operations in Iraq and Afghanistan are a constant reminder of the continued service and sacrifice of our military personnel. They routinely put their lives on the line and serve with as much valour and commitment as Henry, Harry and Bill and all those servicemen and
women of previous generations. I and my fellow councillors will be joining the Mayor at various remembrance events this Sunday and I would urge you to come along to one if you can. At 10.45am, there will be a service at the war memorial in Old Steine. Later, at 2.15pm, a parade will leave Hove Town Hall and march to the war memorial, in Grand Avenue, Hove, for the wreath-laying ceremony. From there it will process to All Saints Church for a full service of remembrance at 3pm. There are also services in Easthill Park, Hove Cemetery and at the West Hove Synagogue, among others. The debt we owe those who have served is the thread of continuity that will run through all of these events and through and all previous Remembrance Sundays. That is why this Sunday is as much about the present and future as it is about the past.

I was born in Brighton and used to spend a lot of my time on the West Pier during the war – my memories begin with a time when the skies were lit up with more menacing lights than the firework displays we see today. can exclusively announce that Paul Kemp and the people behind the city’s most popular gay nights, Wild Fruit, are planning their most extravagant celeb-packed event yet. Called the Red Party, the event will take place on Sunday 6 December and will feature some top celebrity names DJ’ing, including Boy George (snapped here in his exclusive photo shoot for the event), Patsy Palmer, XFactor finalist and ex-Happy Monday’s singer Rowetta – plus Brighton-based producers The Freemasons, to name just a few. Held at the vast Oceana, the Red Party will completely take over all seven rooms and will include two live performances by two very special guests – I hope to be able to bring those to you next week. But rest assured, they won’t disappoint. Organisers have told me, however, that Will Young is playing next door at the Brighton Centre the very same night, and the gig is the last night of his UK tour – so watch this space. Tickets for the Red Party are on sale now priced £10, and are available from Prowler, Charles Street, Dr Brighton's, Brighton Dome Box office and www.ticketweb.co.uk
EASY TIGER Brighton couple Daniel Hill and his partner Charis, who run Tiger Enterprises, are fast becoming the darlings of all things eco. Just last week cameras were filming the couple, whose urban recycling company is based down at Brighton Marina, for a special programme to be screened as part of the Tonight With Trevor McDonald series on ITV1. The programme is a challenge to retrofit a West Sussex semi with completely recycled materials in a limited amount of time. Daniel and Charis are no strangers to being in the limelight, as they are currently on the small screen alongside Ground Force presenter Tommy Walsh in his current show, Fix Your House For Free, which is on the Discovery Channel every Thursday. Tonight With Trevor McDonald, featuring Tiger Enterprises, is due to air in November.

DREAM DUET Ex-Blue star Antony Costa met a lucky winner of the ‘Heart Makes It Happen’ competition last Friday at Lucky Voice in Black Lion Street. Heart listener Cheri Gillam, from Brighton, won the chance to Karaoke with the singer, who is soon to reunite with band mates Duncan, Lee and Simon next year. The lucky lady spent two hours singing along to her fave tunes in a private booth – nice.

What we used to say An occasional series in which we struggle to remember the original, simple, once common terms that have been abandoned in favour of ghastly, overblown, crass, managerial Americanisms.
THINGS BRIGHTON EXCELS AT An occasional series in which we introduce a note of cheer into these bleak, recession hit times by pointing out things Brighton is actually good at.
WHAT WE SAY NOW: “Mentoring...” A gerund derived from the informal verb formation of the original noun – now ubiquitous in all institutions of every kind. Other derivations include mentee (the lucky recipient of mentoring – once known simply as an apprentice, or a protégé).

Cancerian’s like it hot and love the excitement of a bonfire party. As a consequence, Roadblocks may prevent cancerians from entering Lewes. You are the Big Mamma rocket. Leos like to put on a show . Sometimes it’s all wind and spit but sometimes they can really pull it off. This year pull it off with a whopper firework like an Aurora Borealis – boom! Virgos prefer a quieter time and many will stay home with the curtains drawn and the TV turned up loud. Your astral firework is a pretty little Golden Rain.
Go for it Libra and show us all what a big noise you can make. There are plenty of choices but put your stars in the sky with the single ignition Armageddon. Scorpios like to be seen as the big cheese but too often turn out to be the Baby Bel. How sad – never mind, your astral firework is the dainty little coloured flare match – oooooh! Sagis, of course, will be staying in on bonfire night – frankly the excitement will be too much for you. Astral suggests that to hot up your evening you break out the Deep Heat.
Male Capricorns should announce that they are embracing their inner woman and then let loose their biggie, The Steel Rainbow, an astral firework for equality. Aquarians love pretty colours and bright lights – of any kind, watch how they behave in a disco. Your astral firework is the humble banger – to try and shock some sense into you. Pisceans can enjoy real fireworks this bonfire night when Roy and Muriel host their naturist evening at Bardsley’s. Watch the sparks fly as his cod piece hits that hot fat.

L7 INTERVIEW 13
POETRY IN MOTION Glen Ferris talks to Ben Whishaw about playing Keats in Jane Campion’s Bright Star, tipped as the cinematic romance of the year
B
efitting his quietly confident nature, Ben Whishaw has been covertly building on his unlikely heartthrob status since Trevor Nunn cast him as Hamlet at the Old Vic back in 2004. Still only 28 years old, he’s already starred opposite the likes of Dustin Hoffman and Alan Rickman in Perfume: The Story Of A Murderer, Heath Ledger and Christian Bale in the Bob Dylan biopic I’m Not There, and Emma Thompson and Michael Gambon in Brideshead Revisited. Now he’s back as the Romantic poet John Keats in Bright Star, the new film from Oscar-winning director Jane Campion. A film that admittedly plays fast and loose with historical accuracy, it’s nevertheless receiving universal praise for its beautiful retelling of the tragic love affair between Keats and Fanny Brawne (Abbie Cornish). We spoke to leading man Ben in the environs of John Keats’ real-life Hampstead Heath house. It must have been difficult knowing how to play such a historic figure... It was, but I feel very much that there are now two Keats in a way. On the screen, there’s the Keats who was inspired by the real man but who is also a character in a poem thanks to Jane [Campion]’s script. There are things about the real Keats that the film doesn’t go into, and I think that way of looking at it certainly took the pressure off playing him. I felt very safe in Jane’s hands.
Is it a help or a hindrance playing a real-life person on screen? It can be a hindrance, but artists tend to want to tell the stories of other artists because there’s some kind of mythic quality about them. It doesn’t necessarily matter if all the details are accurate, it’s more about getting the essence of the person correct. Of course, we don’t know really what Keats sounded or moved like for example, so you just tend to hone in on what’s magical about his personality. Keats was a very passionate man, capable of intense love. It’s also great to have somebody’s back story already drawn in – it saves an actor a lot of work!
“I was inspired to write love letters after making this film. It’s a beautiful way of communicating with someone you love” Were you a fan of Keats before this film? When I was doing A-level English I must have done a sonnet or something but my knowledge was very limited. To be honest, it was reading Jane’s script that opened up the poetry for me. I did it that way around. Like Keats said, ‘Poetry should come naturally or it shouldn’t come at all’. Sometimes, with me, it really doesn’t come at all. Central to the success of this film is the chemistry between Keats and Fanny. Were you and Abbie Cornish friends before you worked together? No, I met her on the first day of rehearsal. She was wearing a pair of red Wellingtons and I was really surprised I suppose, she’s really quite tomboyish. But she’s a wonderful person to be with and we got along wonderfully. Really, either chemistry is there or it isn’t, and there’s nothing you can do about it if isn’t there. All I can
say is that, when I met Abbie, for a day or two we were like cats, wary of each other and trying to sniff each other out. Once we’d gone through a little of Jane’s rehearsal process, we very quickly were in tune with each other.
Yourself and Abbie had never even met before you were both cast – would you agree that Jane took quite a leap of faith? “Definitely, yes. It really says a lot about Jane and her style of directing. She’s just got really amazing instincts about people in a way I’ve never really come across before. She must have had some intuition that we’d get on well. She never even seemed to doubt it.” It’s clearly a role that has made an impression on you. Has it inspired you to write your own poetry? “Erm, I’m afraid not. I’ve never attempted to write poetry. If anything, studying Keats’s poetry has made me realize that attempting it wouldn’t even be worth it. Okay, so you don’t write poetry but do you consider yourself a romantic? “Well, I was inspired by Keats to write love letters after making this film. It’s a really beautiful way of communicating with someone you love, which is something the film really celebrates.” Bright Star is released on Friday 6 November and showing at the Duke Of York’s, Brighton, from 13 November. A
re there times you have wished there were someone else helping you in your life? Do you often wish you could ask for advice and someone would hear you and respond? Life can be a struggle at times when you try to do everything alone and take on all the burdens yourself. The angels are here to say that you don’t have to; they are always happy to help us and will never judge us. There is no problem too small or silly or a question that’s too simple for them. Their love and help is never-ending. An angel card reading with Angel Practitioner Therapist® Christina Moore can help with general life issues, or it can be used to give guidance on a particular question. A reading will help bring clarity to any situation and help remove the fear around any issues concerned. By using angel cards as a guide,
Christina accesses advice that the angels have for you. Their advice is always uplifting and positive as they try to help us back onto the path to happiness and one that fulfils us. During a reading, the client picks three cards from a pack of 44 beautifully drawn and inspiring cards, which are used as the basis for the reading. Christina uses them to connect to the angels and receive guidance for you on your issues. Using intuition and skill, Christina is able to interpret the meanings of the cards and the messages from the angels and offer you the guidance you need.
Angels are that unseen force that you wish for. They are able to help you with your burdens and to remind you that you are never alone. They are divine beings who are here to guide and protect us throughout our life. And, although you may think that you don’t have anyone helping you, everyone has a guardian angel whether you are religious, spiritual or not. Angels don’t belong to any religion, although references to them can be found in every major religion. All you need to connect with and work with your angels is the desire to do so. It’s that simple! Remember, you don’t have to live this life alone. Angel card readings are available on a one-to-one basis, and also by phone from the certified Angel Practitioner Therapist®, Crystal Healer and Usui Reiki Master Christina Moore. A reading costs £15. HEALTH 17
Breath of fresh air Maintain good oral hygiene and avoid halitosis with help from Dental Health Spa
I
n the majority of cases, bad breath (halitosis) is caused by oral bacteria. There are over 700 different types of bacteria in the mouth (both good and bad) and at any one time there may be as many as 10 billion bacteria in the average human mouth – that is more than you will find on a toilet seat! These bacteria, just like us, go through life consuming food and excreting the waste product. It is this waste product that causes the bad smells in the mouth. These bacteria thrive in the plaque that coats our teeth, gums and tongue. Good oral hygiene is essential to prevent the build-up of plaque in the mouth and so eradicate the environment in which the bacteria thrive. As part of your daily oral hygiene routine, you should not only brush your teeth for two minutes each day, ensuring that you brush all surfaces equally, you should also clean between your teeth to reach the areas your toothbrush can’t reach, preferably with floss or little
brushes – whichever you find easier to use. The majority of the bacteria that cause bad breath actually live on the back portion of our tongues. In order to remove these bacteria we should lightly brush the tongue or use a tongue scraper (often toothbrushes have these scrapers on the reverse side of the brush). It is also essential to gargle and
wash the mouth out with a good quality mouthwash, making sure that you keep it in the mouth for around 30 seconds. It is also advised that you visit a hygienist, like Christina at Dental Health Spa, in addition to your usual dental check up, to remove any tartar (hardened plaque) that has accumulated on your teeth, which can also cause gum disease and ultimately bad breath! ANDREW KAY’S FOOD & DRINK 19
Food & Drink Andrew Kay loves the sense of fun and finesse at Oki Nami
Oki doki T
he most frequent question I am asked – after ‘How do you stay so young looking?’ that is – is, ‘What is your favourite restaurant?’ To which I invariably reply, ‘Favourite by what criteria?’ You see, I have favourite places for a fry up, places to hide away, places to be romantic, places to fill my boots, places to go when I am feeling the pinch... The list is varied and immeasurable. But if pushed, there are a chosen few, and for many years Oki Nami has been amongst them. Down in Hove, it was a sanctuary of elegance and great food as well as a great selection of saki. But it did feel like it was on the edge of the known universe. A certain local celeb with a yoyo weight problem moniker felt the same, and last year he decided to back Oki Nami in a flurry of publicity and parties; all very good. Oki Nami is now at the centre of town, is bigger and, “Oki Nami is now at although perhaps a little the centre of town, is less classical, is actually a whole lot classier. And much bigger and, although of that is to do with being popular and busy. A buzz in perhaps a little less a restaurant really makes a difference and, last classical, is actually a Thursday, despite the whole lot classier” weather being grim, there were enough people in to make the place come alive. Owner and chef Mike Dodd is an old friend and one who I trust will give me a good and balanced meal. I discarded the menus and we went off piste – well almost, I simply asked our waiter to let Mike choose. At a table nearby, someone I know was tucking into oysters, and I did wonder whether I should have requested some. But once our food started to arrive I forgot all about them. To list our entire meal would be almost impossible in the space, so forgive me if I go for edited highlights. We started with edamame beans, served hot, which means that they were sugary sweet and bursting with flavour. I like to scrape the flesh from the pods which my guest, the ubiquitous Mr L, frowned at – and maybe he is right, as the plate did look a little grim after my endeavours. The sashimi was startlingly fresh – creamy salmon, velvety squid and my favourite firm mackerel. The radish sprinkled with jewel like salmon roe was also worth tucking into when so often it lies untouched. The tuna was packed with flavour and the texture was immaculate. Sushi were equally good with a great herb punch at their heart.
Skewers of beef and chicken in sticky sauce were cooked so that the outsides were toffee coated but the meat remained succulent. We both loved the grilled dumplings, the filling loose and brilliantly seasoned, the pasta tender and the crisp edges utterly moreish. A plate of thinly sliced rare beef – and I mean rare – came crusted with peppers and drizzled in a piquant dressing. It was an impressive combination of totally yielding, soft, cloud-like beef and pyrotechnic sauce. I didn’t want it to end and, I will say, it was a very generous portion of what was clearly an expensive ingredient. Generosity continued with a plate of tempura fish, more of the brilliant squid which put a smile on both of our faces, both of us being two-faced. Tempura, in clumsy hands, is merely battered goujons that can burst and pour scalding hot oil down your chin – but these were light, clean and dry. A big plate of meaty noodles was, I guessed, the ballast in a protein rich dinner but I was quite happy eating lean meats and great fresh fish both raw and cooked. We drank a variety of drinks from G&Ts, through a delicious plum mojhito, to ice cold sake. It worked well with such a vast array of tastes and textures too. Oki Nami looks great and tastes better. The service was a delight, fast and efficient but also informative. We finished with Mike’s favourite tempura icecream, a cross between baked alaska and Arctic Roll – yum. The best thing is, you can snack or feast and you can have fun too – no pompous nonsense here, no hushed tones or silly ceremony, just great, great food. We feasted and feasted well, probably too well, as I wobbled home happy and replete. Oki Nami, 6 New Road, Brighton, East Sussex, BN1 1UF 01273 77377 www.okinami.com

feigned indifference, Asif is doing it his way. If his heart and mind belonged to anyone, if he had to pledge allegiance to anything, it would be to Queen Elizabeth – as long as she was stuck on the back of a bank note. But Asif’s world is about to get all shook up. A school project challenges him to ‘feel’. A zealous classmate wants him to get ‘real’. His doormat dad won’t stand up and his favourite rap group have just been banged up. And that is just for starters. As the pressures of life mount, Asif has to make some difficult choices. Whether he finds a dream worth living or dying for all depends on the state of his heart and mind. Hearts And Minds was originally commissioned in late 2007 by the Muslim Education Forum in Luton and Reading-based Berkshire Forum Against Extremism, and subsequently toured schools, colleges, universities and young offender institutes in March 2008. The play was then taken on a promotional tour to London. Hearts And Minds, The Hawth Studio, Crawley, Friday 4 December 7.30pm, £9.50/£8.50, 01293 553636, www.hawth.co.uk
M-m-murder Asian heart, British mind Award-winning Khayaal Theatre brings a Muslim point of view to The Hawth The joy of theatre is its ability to both entertain and educate, and there is no denying that some of the most powerful theatre ever produced has been able to do both in equal measure. Sadly, though, we too often see work that alienates through being either overtly political or – at the opposite extreme – purely ephemeral. Getting the balance right is the tough part, and if you achieve that then you can get your message across in a subliminal way. It’s a useful technique when dealing with issues relating to young adults, especially those to whom theatre is an alien medium, divorced from the freeze-frame, fast forward and rewind world of entertainment as they know it. In early December, the award-winning Khayaal Theatre will be at The Hawth in Crawley. Khayaal Theatre produces work which focuses on the experiences of Muslims in the modern world as well as dramatisations of classical Muslim literature. Hearts And Minds is the story of a teenage boy, Asif. He is Pakistani by memory, urban British by culture and Muslim by sentiment – and Asif appears to be in his groove. Cutting his entrepreneurial teeth by selling pirated wares and trumpeting his adolescence with a blend of gab and

Classic Hitchcock staged by the people that brought us The 39 Steps
Anyone who caught the breathtakingly paced 39 Steps when it hit Brighton should be clamouring to see the next offering from the same production team: another Hitchcock classic, this time Dial M For Murder. How will they do it? Well, if they pack as much wit and invention into this as they did into John Buchan’s thriller, it is a guaranteed sure-fire hit. This time the company are bringing the show to Brighton prior to a West End run, and if their track record stays the same, it will no doubt follow The 39 Steps to Broadway. The plot, a complex love triangle riddled with deceit and murderous intent, is full of the kinds of twists and turns that should make for an hilarious and thrilling show of pure theatrical magic. SCOTT MATTHEWS Literally coming from nowehere with his stunning Passing Stranger album in 2006, Matthews makes brilliantly constructed, expansive acoustica recalling Jeff Buckley and Nick Drake. Things have somewhat subsided with his new album, Elsewhere, a less than strong follow-up, and it’s dissappointing to see him once again playing solo acoustic here when it’s the general expansiveness of his band that really hits home. Wednesday 4 November, Komedia

HEADWATER This hard-working West Canadian country-roots outfit came together in 2001. Their driving, succinct and melodious tunes are enough to get your feet a-tappin’ and your head a-noddin’. Wednesday 4 November, Latest Music Bar
ZUM Taking their cue from folk music traditions from around the world, London’s Zum bring salsa, bluegrass, klezmer, calypso and bebop into the mix. The tango of Astor Piazzolla is also apparent throughout, as are traditional gypsy melodies and dazzling fiddle playing. Friday 6 November, Corn Exchange, Brighton Dome
ABSENT ELK Emotive indie rockers previously signed to a major – who dropped them rather suddenly despite tours with Girls Aloud and The Hoosiers – they have just released their debut album, Caught In The Headlights, through Brighton independent label Amazon. Fronted by Norwegian Kjetel Morland, this is classic indieepic – think Coldplay meets Turin Brakes. Tuesday 3 November, Pavilion Theatre, Brighton Dome
FOLK WAVE The golden boy of folk, Seth Lakeman and his battered fiddle are back in town for his biggest Brighton gig yet
O
ver the last few years, one of the most interesting developments in ‘popular’ music has been the increasing acceptance of folk (and that other quintessentially English genre, music hall) by the music industry and public. Long maligned as ‘finger-in-your-ear’ music, it has also suffered from the puritanical streak that runs through some of the more traditional folk performers, who get terribly upset when electricity is used or their music is blended with other styles. Times have changed, though, and Seth is one of the leading lights of the folk revival that has seen a new generation of traditionally-influenced bands and musicians come through, such as Noah & The Whale, Laura Marling and Jonny Flynn. Lakeman, though, does come from a family steeped in the folk tradition. His parents dragged him and his brother Sam to folk festivals around the country, which gave them the taste to make their own music. “We were basically a bunch of precocious teenagers jumping around,” he says. “It was better than a paper-round and we earned good money playing at festivals like Sidmouth and Whitby.” Here they met the likes of Eliza Carthy,
Kate Rusby, and Cara Dillon. “There was definitely a generation of sons and daughters that were getting to know each other and experiment with music.” Despite having been in the folk group Equation, who featured a young Kate Rusby and signed a deal with a major label, Lakeman wasn’t prepared for the success that came with a Mercury Music Prize nomination in 2005 for his self-financed (it only cost about £300 to make)debut album, Kitty Jay. “I applied because my PR reckoned it was worth a shot. You have to spend £250 just to enter, and also send 50 CDs – which, seeing as I was unemployed at the time, was a lot of money. Then, one day, I was sitting by the side of the M5 and got a call from Harriet [his PR] telling me to come up to London because I was being nominated for the Mercury Prize. It was good news because my car had just blown up.” While capitalising on his strong, male look and aggressive way with a fiddle, Seth hasn’t foregone his folk roots. His albums continue to retell dark tales of Dartmoor's past, plus a gamut of freshly researched West Country tales, muscularly played by a band who are one of the best around. The Days Before
Pictured: Brighton Lions Firework Display at Sussex County Cricket Ground in Hove .
Four painters – Mike Bartlett, Marcus Cope, Patrick Galway and Cathy Lomax – examine the forgotten, the everyday and the mundane. From images based on the memories of others to representations of the everyday and the need to puncture and deflate the mind-dumbing drudgery of life, The Days Before is at heart an exercise in escapism. LEWES BONFIRES
This annual, popular bonfire event takes place throughout the town of Lewes, organised by six local bonfire societies. Each society has their own marching procession, bonfire and firework display. From 5pm roads in the town of Lewes will be closed to traffic. Processions start from 5pm on the High Street and go on all evening. The societies return from their fire sites around 10pm and, from 11pm, most will have their final processions, culminating in ‘Fire Prayers’. 31 torchlight processions and six separate bonfires create a unique spectacle but, combined with narrow streets and massive crowds, can be confusing for the uninitiated. Each society has a different approach and, while the event is definitely not suitable for younger children, those taking older children are still advised to choose a family-friendly bonfire. Concerns over the huge crowds attending in recent years and safety issues have led to the organisers somewhat controversially asking people from outside Lewes to stay away, but large crowds are still expected. Lewes, East Sussex. Thursday 5 November from 5pm. For more information visit www.lewesbonfirecouncil.org.uk or www.lewes.gov.uk/leisure/1774.asp

MICHAEL MCINTYRE: LIVE & LAUGHING
O
ff the back of last year’s must-have Christmas DVD and his hugely successful Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow – plus the fact he’s just pure joy and laughter in one compact bundle – Michael McIntyre is embarking on his first arena tour. And he’s not unaware of the implications of playing to so many people in one single space. “I know it’s a really big responsibility,” he admits. “You have to reach people who are sitting in their seat while the Sat Nav is telling them they’re still fifteen minutes away from the venue! They’re leaving their house and paying for a ticket and a babysitter and parking. It could be a big burden for a performer.” He’s not daunted by the task, though. If anything, the prospect is simply getting him a tad over-excited. “The vibe in these huge spaces helps me raise my game,” he says. “You get fuelled by hearing that the audience are having a good time. Adrenalin is vital to a performer, and at an arena show I’m going to have more of it than I’ve ever had.” Brighton being at the end of his epic tour, he’ll have had plenty of time to scale-up his performance. “I’m just trying to make people laugh,” he explains. “And when it’s working, there is nothing nicer!” Michael McIntyre: Live & Laughing, Brighton Centre, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9 and 15 November, £30. His new DVD, Hello Wembley! is out 16 November.

REVIEWS

L7 Under review Read more reviews of local shows online at www.thelatest.co.uk THE EIGHTIES MATCHBOX B-LINE DISASTER ‘Cult’ bands are rarely as good as their fans insist, though occasionally they more than justify that adoration. This was one such occasion. After a few years out of the limelight, Guy McKnight and his none-more rock'n'roll goth psychobillies returned to the fray in spectacular fashion. Immediately, McKnight threw himself into the audience, trashing the Engine Room lighting as a throbbing guitar bassline and howling vocals whipped the crowd into a frenzy. Ferocious older classics ‘Celebrate Your Mother’ and ‘Mister Mental’ blended seamlessly with more Americanainfluenced material, making a massively satisfying storm of a show. Eighties Matchbox are truly back. Engine Room, 22 October ✪✪✪✪✪ Nick Aldwinckle
THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW It’s the perennial show that seems to skip any real time warp, much loved and often much abused – not this time. David Badella makes a fine Frank; camp, lascivious and attractively dangerous. He not only looks the part but can sing up a storm too. The principals were all good but, in particular, Haley Flaherty. The Phantom chorus for me was a little too polished, too ‘jazz hands’, and they lacked that raw punkish edge of the original. Christopher Biggins did an excellent job but sadly over encouraged an audience who, dressed up and tanked up, had not bothered to swot up and did not know the correct – and to my mind irritating – responses and heckles. That said it was a ripping evening of fun. Theatre Royal, 26 October ✪✪✪✪✪ Andrew Kay
BIFFY CLYRO Following their appearance at White Air, Scottish indie rock outfit Biffy Clyro played a fantastic gig at the Concert Hall. The support acts may have been forgettable, but Biffy Clyro performed an eclectic mix of songs from past albums and the upcoming Only Revolutions. Slower
tracks accompanied by acoustic guitar quietened the crowd who had been heaving in the mosh pit shortly before. I may have been on the outskirts of this but the atmosphere was just as electric as they played favourites including 'Mountains.' At times they can be compared to Queens Of The Stone Age, at other times to Foo Fighters, but the best thing about them is the sound that is distinctly theirs. Dome Concert Hall, 26 October ✪✪✪✪✪ Zara Baker
TINARIWEN This hugely revered and iconic group from the Western Sahara region of northern Mali make world music that sounds like a fusion from many corners of the globe: Arabic, Indian and western rock sounds are built into their indigenous African blues, and ‘desert’ guitar (there are three guitarists in the band) allied to spoken and sung tales of beauty and suffering. Tinariwen gradually enticed the audience to trance out as the rhythms and easy-going vibes hit the mark song after song. Looking elegant and somewhat rock'n'roll in their national dress, they were the complete package. Concorde 2, 29 October ✪✪✪✪✪ Jeff Hemmings
THE FUNNIER FARM The launch night of the imaginatively titled successor to The Funny Farm, The Funnier Farm was something of a mixed bag. Six comedians, ably linked by affable MC James Acaster, presented an array of stand-up ranging from the hilarious to the not at all. Still, the high points were worth the lows, with particular mention going to the frighteningly bi-polar performance of Nick Helm, laddish raconteur Matt Forde and excellent headliner Andrew O’Neill. Perhaps lacking a little quality control, for a Wednesday night in a furnace-like room above a pub it was a promising start, and well worth a fiver. Caroline of Brunswick, 28 October ✪✪✪✪✪ Paul McWilliams Tinariwen
SEX BOMB TOM JONES Brighton Centre, 23 October ✪✪✪✪✪
I
n a full to capacity Brighton Centre, Tom Jones took to the stage and delivered a set that would have certainly blown most of the current music scene away. His tight rock format band of mainly youngsters laid down a solid foundation, dispelling any idea that this was going to be some glossy, Las Vegas-style cabaret act. Jones, now silver grey and better for it, looked the part in a black suit and dark shirt – slick, handsome and at ease on the stage – but it was the voice we wanted. And from the first note to the last, it proved as strong as ever. Unlike so many older pop ‘stars’, he can still hit every note and, as a consequence, the songs sound exactly as they should do; no sliding down an octave when the going gets tough for Tom. The numbers from his new album, 24 Hours, were good – in particular ‘Sugar Daddy’, written for him by Bono and The Edge. His banter was polished and charming, gentlemanly even, and his soft accent is as
Welsh as ever. Stripping down to basics, the band delivered three perfect country numbers that added a mellow moment before ripping into the full-on funk sound once more. The adoring audience lapped up everything he did but it was the hits that had them going wild and, yes, there were knickers. ‘Delilah’, ‘Thunderball’ and ‘What’s New Pussycat’ worked well side by side with later material like ‘Kiss’, so much so that any thought of re-invention disappeared. Jones is no different – he is a great vocal talent who has dealt with new material, embraced modern fashion and pulled it off with aplomb. He started the evening pacing, cool as a cucumber, but by the end he was dancing and spinning to growl at the ever more excited audience. Maybe he’s not as fluid as in his younger, pelvis-thrusting days but he is as sexy and as good on the eyes and the ears as ever. The crowd loved it. Andrew Kay

With Andy Winter
Lewry’s legacy Star cricketer Jason Lewry is one of several key players leaving Sussex this season
T
he end of the cricket season sees the sad departure of players from Sussex County Cricket Club. Some retire, others are out of contract, and a few seek pastures new. This season sees the retirement, after 16 years, of one of Sussex’s greatest servants, Jason Lewry. A bowler of extraordinary talent, he should have had international recognition. His seven wickets in 14 balls against Hampshire at Hove in 2001 was, at the time, the second best spell in first class cricket history. He ended his career with 735 wickets (621 in first class cricket, 100 in limited overs matches, and 14 in Twenty20 matches). He achieved the notable double of having taken the first wicket and hitting the first six in Twenty20 history, a form of cricket that never particularly appealed to him. Also retiring is Carl Hopkinson – at 27, eleven years Lewry’s junior. I have always regarded him as one of the unluckiest players I have ever watched. I cannot recall how many times he was dismissed in freak or unfair circumstances – a ball not lifting off the pitch, or a fluke run out. This last season he demonstrated what a fine batsman he is with two centuries.
Jason Lewry with Sussex team mate Matt Prior.
Where he really excelled, however, was in the field. In a team blessed with outstanding fielding talent from the likes of Rory Hamilton-Brown, Luke Wright and the extraordinary Dwayne Smith, Hopkinson set the gold standard. He will continue to do so as he stays at the Club as its specialist fielding coach. Sussex would have liked to retain the services of 20-year-old spinner Piyush Chawla, but the restriction of just one overseas player sees him moving to rivals, Surrey, with Yasir Arafat remaining at Hove. Sussex has an abundance of high quality slow bowlers but needs Arafat as its main strike bowler, not least following Lewry’s retirement. Sussex is also saying goodbye to spinner Tom Smith, who has been effectively sidelined by the emergence of Rory Hamilton-Brown and Will Beer. Sussex is retaining a squad of players capable of challenging for honours in all competitions next season. However, the lack of young fast bowlers is a worry for the Club. There appears to be no new Jason Lewry or James Kirtley in the wings. Luke Wright has potential, but there is a risk that international call-ups will restrict his development with both bat and ball. Ideally, he should have a further season at Hove so he can learn to score big hundreds and many of them, as well as honing his bowling skills beyond raw pace. A final word on Jason Lewry. He has been one of the key components in Sussex’s success over the last decade. Part of his legacy should be to inspire young players, cast in his mould, characterised by hard work and a love of the game.

Soap’s psycho success Coronation Street, ITV1 Thursday, Friday & Monday
T
ony has gotten himself in a bit of a pickle. For those of you out of the loop for the last, well, pretty much a whole year, Tony is a Scotsman with a dangerous look in his eye, currently playing the big man on Coronation Street. He’s well aware that his house of cards is all ready to come tumbling down in a rather nasty game of Snap! as everyone else discovers the truth. Which is of course that he had his current fianceé’s hubby killed a year ago in a fit of mad jealousy after discovering said hubby was having it away with his own delightful missus, Carla. You still following? You may be asking, why didn’t anybody twig at the time? Well, somebody did. That would be his current fianceé, Maria, the black widow of Wetherfield, who initially wailed up a storm accusing Tony of all manner of things he’d actually done, and – equally dastardly – a few he hadn’t but had had a good old try at. Surprisingly, the rest of the Street found these accusations rather far-fetched – in Soapland! These are the people who have had husbands and wives killed by serial killers, been pushed down the stairs by their own kin, and discovered long lost siblings bearing an unnatural similarity to one Spanish waiter
previously employed at a small hotel with a bad-tempered proprietor in Torquay. Norris – you know who you are! After enduring all of this, and much more, you’d think the great and the beautiful of Corrie would consider there could be some credibility to Maria’s wailing and accusations. If just a tenth of what that lot have endured in the last five years happened round our way, the Neighbourhood Watch would be rampant with paranoia. However, they just thought she was a nutter. Fair as. So now, having been convinced that she was being a nutter, Maria is all set to marry the orchestrator of her husband’s death. The Greek tragedy of it all. But with Carla now back on the scene – she fled in disgust when Tony confessed all – and Tony over-sharing with Roy from what he supposed was death’s door, this is about to blow up in spectacular style. It’s worth saying well done to the writers for keeping us interested all the way through this incredibly long tale. No Heather’s-babydaddytedium here, thank you very much. ‘StEnders, take note. Now, what’ll Roy do next? Will Tony continue his reign of terror? He’s already considered doing in former love of his life Carla – what’s one more dead cafe-owner between psychos? Tony’s off soon, but will it be in handcuffs or a casket? Place your bets now.

tuesday 3 Nature Shock: Death Fog Five, 8pm Despite a title which sounds like a marketing ploy for Stephen King’s latest offering, this documentary is a study of a freak occurrence from 1986. Nearly 2,000 people died at a lake in Cameroon from what was initially thought to be an underwater eruption. What was it, and how can we stop it happening again?
Black Widow Granny? BBC1, 10.35pm In 2008, after 22 years of chasing, Al Gentry got his wish. Betty Neumar was arrested for the murder of his brother Harold, who was Betty’s husband in 1986. It was only upon her arrest that it became apparent that Harold wasn’t Betty’s only husband to have died in suspicious circumstances. Chilling.
Veronica Mars E4, 4pm Before she was in Heroes, before she was the voice of Gossip Girl, and before she looked too old to play a teenager, Kristen Bell was Veronica Mars – the plucky teenage sleuth. Not a 20-something with a perky haircut and an amazing skin regime. Of course not. The latest in guilty pleasure watching.

friday 6 Comedy Showcase Channel 4, 10pm Channel 4 likes to invest in new comedy, with E4’s School Of Comedy and their sponsorship of the Udderbelly venue. And these original one-off pilots are not going to miss out on that sugar. This, the first in a new batch, is from the creative writing team behind Green Wing, moving to a uni campus this time. Cool.
Law And Order: SVU Five, 11pm The multi-award winning cop drama focusing on the Special Victims Unit in New York continues to keep up the quality. When a doctor attempts to falsify a paternity test naming him as the father of a murdered infant, he exposes a much bigger horror and prompts his own murder. Good thing we’ve got good cops.
Film: The Descent More4, 12.55am With the sequel primed to be released in cinemas any moment now, you may want to catch up on this original scary flick about a group of lady pot-holers who find they are trapped underground with feral creatures out to ‘take back the dark’ to the scary side. Check out the darker Brit ending the Yanks couldn’t stomach.

saturday 7 Strictly Come Dancing BBC1, 6.25pm With nine remaining couples, you can be sure of both the graceful movers and the clumping have-agoes still being involved here, as well as one or two lurchingly progressing dancers otherwise known as the ‘dark horses’ of the competition. It’s all to play for, and personally calculate if you could have ‘em at the Tango.
The X Factor ITV1, 8pm Whatever you may think of Louis’ sniping, Simon’s smarm, Cheryl’s ‘babe’ wardrobe or Dannii’s ever heightening hair, this is must-see telly. Those twins. John and Edward are the last group Louis’ got and Simon’s threatened to leave the country if they win the whole shebang. Is it worth a phone vote just for that? Hmm.
Rosemary And Thyme ITV3, 7pm What do you get when you cross a divorced retired police lady type and a redundant horticulture university lecturer? A pair of rather lovely gardening fans who are also amateur sleuths. As if you didn’t know. Don’t dismiss this as tea-time detecting, it’s really rather fun. There’s even prisoners weeding and a murder.

sunday 8 Time Team Channel 4, 7pm It’s great getting physical with history, getting to grips with primitive tools and working out exactly how and where people lived ages and ages ago. Like, even before you put your first Facebook status up. This week Tony Robinson and the team are on Bodmin Moor with a possible Bronze Age village.
The X-Factor ITV1, 8pm Right, so after last night’s fiasco (it’s bound to have been a fiasco, that’s what they seem to aim for) it’s time to announce who got through and had all their supporters call, and who’s Billy no-mates. Then it’s down to the judges to pick, if they have the guts and don’t just push a stalemate through again. Ho hum.
Trinity ITV2, 10pm It’s the last in the series, and this decadent lot are well set for their comeuppances. Lord Gaudain comes back to Trinity to reign in the dissaray a bit but finds Maltravers spiralling out of control. Meanwhile, Charlotte is being held at Dorain’s pleasure and Dr Cooper is feeling the strain. Time for crescendo here.

monday 9 The Execution Of Gary Glitter Channel 4, 9pm One of the sticks used to beat the public with when the Big Guns want to shut us up is the fact that the majority of Brits want to bring back the death penalty. This ‘what if’ drama does that, with Glitter tried under the Capital Crimes Against Children act and in line to lose more than his gang.
Flashforward Five, 9pm This sci-fi drama is getting mysteriouser and mysteriouser. Especially as its release dates in the States are so close to ours, you have to be bang on the ball to cheat with that nifty internet thing. Luckily we can tell you that the gang are investigating a club and possible connections to suicides. On the QT.
Being Erica E4, 10pm ‘No regrets’ is a good way to live your life. Unfortunately it seems not everyone can manage this on an ad hoc basis and in American drama-land some people even get to go back and live the horrible things they regret again with the chance to put it right. Isn’t it so Hallmark? Not when it’s for Erica and her Mom to sort out.
