Ryuichi Sakamoto grew up in post-war Tokyo where everything Japanese was ‘bad’. Instead, Bach and The Beatles became his inspiration for a career that has taken him from unlikely pop stardom with the Yellow Magic Orchestra, via an even more unlikely acting career (he starred opposite David Bowie in Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence), to Oscar success with his soundtrack for The Last Emperor. This week he’s in town for a very rare UK appearance with his new show, Playing The Piano (which should strictly be plural, as the highly creative performance involves him duetting with himself). Meet him in this issue’s L7 Interview. Over-achieving locals are out in full force this week, as we have news of the Sussex Food and Drink Awards finalists, the Sussex Sport Awards and – in this month’s Wave – a Brighton-based company who sell toy animals to help save their endangered live counterparts. Buy a fake seal cub, save a real ice cap (sort of). If failure is more your thing, you should enjoy our feature on Nevermades, the Cinecity film festival strand devoted entirely to those films, many of them now infamous, which never made it out of production hell. The festival continues until 6 December, with full screening listings in our Film section. got a cab from the Stage Door at the Theatre Royal the other day, having just popped in to say hello to a friend who was on tour. As we drove off the driver asked if I was in the show. Here we go, I thought to myself. I’ll say I’m an actress, he’ll look at me in disbelief because he doesn’t recognise me, then he’ll ask me what I’ve been in. I’ll reel off a few of the usual suspect shows he might have heard of, leaving out the ill-fated sitcom with Prunella Scales (which my own father kindly described as “the biggest pile of ol’ s**** you’ve ever been in”), the Yellow Pages commercial I always get recognised from, and my time spent in a two-sizes-too-big copper’s uniform interviewing Daniel Craig, pre-James Bond. Then, Joe le Taxi will say he hasn’t seen me in anything because he doesn’t watch telly, but his wife does and he’ll ask her when he gets in. You hear all these actors banging on about how boring it is being recognised – well, let me tell you, it’s just as boring not being recognised. In order to avoid trawling through my entire CV and sounding
like I’m making it all up, I usually say I’m a cello teacher. However, a few years ago, giddy after a few wee sherries, I got in a cab and the conversation turned to what I did for a living. I said I was an actress, the driver said “What you been in?” and I said “Do you watch a lot of porn?” He looked mortified and it shut him up good and proper. I used that line to great effect for a while, until I got one cheeky arse cabbie who replied with “I do, as it happens – what sort you do?” I rambled on about having a career in Eastern Europe where they preferred a more voluptuous lady. He then asked me if I had any on video he could borrow and would I like to go out for a drink with him and some of his mates? Visions of me with the diddies out back in the cab office after way too much whisky appalled me into getting him to drop me three streets from where I actually lived and hiding behind a parked car until I was sure he had gone. Hence the safer cello teacher ruse. No-one has ever asked me for lessons, but maybe some day somebody will and I’ll be forced to invent a new profession. Any suggestions?

Epic storms usher in crime wave, Albion get a new manager and boy heads for charity chop
I
n a week which saw the city lashed by fierce storms and crime waves, it was a pleasant contrast to see a steadying hand take the helm at Brighton and Hove’s sporting standard bearers. He no doubt has some rough seas to negotiate ahead but we wish Gus Poyet every success as Albion’s newly appointed manager. The storms washed a body ashore at Brighton and caused damage all along the Sussex coast – and there were one or two galeforce gusts that gave a little reminder to those around at the time of the 1987 hurricane which devastated the region. Householders had more than flattened fences and raised tiles to worry about. Whether the recession or dark nights are to blame, we are all being urged to be vigilant and to watch out for burglars. Two offenders ransacked a flat in Hollingbury, three homes in Woodingdean were raided in just one night and there are reports of break-ins in other parts of the city including Patcham, where rear gardens and insecure back doors appear to be a favourite target. Police are advising: lock all your doors and windows, even if you are home.
It wasn’t just burglaries that gave cause for concern. Police are appealing for information after an 18-year-old woman was raped near a Worthing nightclub and a betting shop was robbed at knifepoint in the town. Police were also called to Berghestede Road in Bersted, Bognor, in the early hours to deal with a report of an assault and burglary. They were initially refused entry to the property and police negotiators were brought in to persuade the men to give themselves up. When this was unsuccessful, specially trained officers entered the premises at around 6.20am and arrested six men on suspicion of burglary and affray. On a lighter note, a police observer told Latest 7 how he accompanied officers as they tackled a gang of yobs in Brighton one evening. They started turning on him and demanded from police “who the hell’s he?” One quickthinking officer replied: “I wouldn’t mess with him mate – he’s FBI,” and the youths backed off. That was one time when youths watching too much American TV actually proved beneficial for law enforcers.
Brighton and Hove City Council leader Mary Mears invites you to the ‘diary room’
L
ast Saturday we launched ‘Get Involved’ across Brighton and Hove. This is a nine month campaign which aims to make residents aware of the many ways they can get involved in contributing to their community, for instance through taking part in local decision making, voting, having a say in local consultations or participating in voluntary work. You may already have noticed a brightly coloured camper van travelling around the city recording residents’ views – ‘diary room’ style – on what they think about local politics, the council and the community around them.
Another story that brought smiles was the “proud” announcement that council tax rises will be the lowest in years. Brighton and Hove City Council’s Conservative administration said it would aim for a rise of 2.5 per cent for its 2010/11 budget, an increase of £36 for the average Band D property. Curious they should boast when the UK’s latest inflation figure stands at 1.6 per cent and when unemployment in the city is way above the national average and jobs are hard to come by. Maybe a £36 reduction would have been something to boast about? Speaking of helping hands, hats off to 13-year-old Daniel Dean who intends shaving off his golden locks to raise £1,000 for the Children’s Liver Disease Foundation after his four-month-old baby brother was diagnosed with a rare liver disease and needed life-saving surgery. He said: “I wanted to do something to help Cameron and children like him.” Mum Kelly said: “Daniel spent two years growing his hair to get his surfer curls and I think it’s brilliant he wants to use it to support the foundation.” Daniel added: “I hope my head doesn’t get cold in the winter.” Daniel will do the deed once he has raised £1,000 in pledges. latest inbox comment@thelatest.co.uk [Re Columnist Idol: Andrew Allen, L7, 450] Funny and intelligent and laced with irony – great article. It is a creative column about how difficult it is to, well... be creative – and Andrew has managed it without sounding like complaining. More like this please. Tim Dalgleish, via www.thelatest.co.uk Dear Latest, I work in Supported Housing for Brighton and Hove City Council and we are part of Supported Housing Month in the South East. We have a number of exciting events planned and would love people to come and see the great work that people who use support services have achieved. There is a gig by Heavy Load at the Komedia on the 10 December, which is part of their internationally famous Stay Up Late campaign. Ravensbourne Court is a sheltered scheme for older people and will be inviting local people to see what sheltered housing is all about with a guest appearance from Simon Cowell’s mother – Julie Cowell. Sanctuary will be opening up their Foyer to young people in other services for a quiz with lunch. We need to celebrate the socially excluded and disadvantaged people who have changed their lives in innovative and creative ways to contribute to Brighton and Hove. Daniel Parsonage, by email Dear Latest 7, 100 Artists for World Aids Day will take place at Concorde 2 on November 29. Anyone interested in exhibiting should email me at hizjam@hotmail.com. What’s the bravest thing you’ve done for charity? comment@thelatest.co.uk
This was a precursor to the launch event on Saturday, which proved to be a real success. Many activities were led by younger and older people of the city; my particular favourite being the ‘Speed Meet Your Councillor’, which was run like a speed dating session! There were also a number of taster sessions for residents to demonstrate how they can get involved in community work, which I hope may have encouraged some people to volunteer.
You can also write to: Letters, Latest Homes Ltd, Unit 1, Level 5 North, New England House, New England Street, Brighton BN1 4GH
In addition, I, along with some fellow councillors and representatives from Sussex Police, the local health service and the community and voluntary sector, took part in a public Question Time grilling hosted by ITN newsreader, Nicholas Owen! This proved to be really popular (as the ‘real’ Question Time is) and I hope that we can stage more of this type of thing in the future. If you missed the launch, don’t worry – we will be running a whole series of events over the coming months – further details will be posted on www.getinvolvedinthecity.org.uk. This campaign is a key priority for the council. We want to help residents contribute where they feel comfortable and, if they feel they want to learn more about the council and its functions, we are keen to make this happen. But it is also very much a two-way street – if you have any ideas about how we can up our game then we would love to hear from you. So, please do try and take the time to Get Involved.

I like Brighton because it is a young place. The only thing lacking is family entertainment, and this is what I’m going to provide at the Engineerium. There will be an interactive centre for kids, a function room, tea rooms, not to mention two cinemas, and the staff will be walking around in costume dress. It will be a very exciting experience, taking you back to the 1860s
”
Mike Holland supervising works at the Engineerium, which he saved from closure in 2006. Mike has rescued more buildings in the city – including Stanmer House – than any other recent benefactor. Now he’s turning all his attention to the restoration of the Engineerium, which was built in the 1860s as the Goldstone water pumping station.

NUMAN UCKS STICKS A warm welcome to new Sussex resident Gary Numan who has just moved to Uckfield. Gary, who used to live close to Stanstead airport and performed his seminal 1979 album The Pleasure Principle at the Concert Hall, Brighton Dome last week, moved house when the local authority bought his old place to make way for new expansion plans at the Essex based airport. Gary, a keen pilot, will probably make use of nearby Shoreham airport for a spot of flying now!

Festivities started early this year in the Lanes as new Albion boss, Gus Poyet (rather dishy ex-Chelsea footballer from Uruguay) helped switch on the annual children's light display at Lanes restaurant Donatello. Gus wasn't alone, however; team mascot Gully was on hand to make sure that all the kids got a goody bag and kept an orderly queue to shake Santa's hand. Gully didn't stop for pizza at the restaurant – he was spotted round the back rummaging through the bins!
ir Paul McCartney's son James has recently revealed that he has recorded an album in Sussex. James, who is 32 and was until recently living and studying in Brighton, chose the Hog Hill Studios in Rye to make his first album with his band Light. James also made his debut live performance with some of the album tracks last weekend in the US at a charity gig. This wasn’t just any old charity, though. James chose film director David Lynch's annual fundraiser in Iowa to play his first solo show. James is a great supporter of the Foundation, which raises money to allow teachings of Transcendental Meditation to one million school children. In a rare statement James said of his new album, “the words refer to spirituality, love, family, trying to sort out one's own life, and many other things. I have been playing music since I was nine and writing along the way. It is basically rock 'n’ roll, clean sounding and vocal. My dad taught me guitar ... I play a Fender Stratocaster, which Carl Perkins gave me from the ‘60s.” James lived in Brighton from 2004 until 2007 and was often described as shy and reclusive – although I did spot him a couple of times!
BRIGHTON FAMILY BOARD THE GRAVY TRAIN A Brighton-based family have been shortlisted in the final five to be the new faces of a TV campaign for Oxo. We all remember Linda Bellingham in the famous ads during the ‘70s and ‘80s – well now the search is on to find another family to tuck into the roast dinner with an added bit of Oxo gravy. The Woodhouse family are currently on screen, alongside the other four finalists, and now it is up to the public to decide who will win the coveted title – and, more importantly, their own TV ad campaign. WHAT WE SAY NOW: “Curate” Verb. A back-formation from the noun “curator”. Once upon a time a curator was the person who runs a museum, but nowadays this title is applied to anyone even vaguely connected to the arts who does not actually possess any creative talent – including impressarios, exhibitors, and even DJs. WHAT WE USED TO SAY: Hold, stage, mount, put on, plan or book.

This week a gift guide for Christmas. This year you should buy Arians hair gel, plasticine, a book (preferably the self help variety), chocolate, underwear (sensible) and a tangerine. Taureans will be thrilled this Yule to find anything in their stocking. Show the bull in your life that you love them with a veggie cookbook, underwear (robust) and a tangerine. Geminis will be excited by anything at all. So do not worry. Simply rifle through last years unwanted gifts and re-wrap. Also, buy underwear (days of the week) and a tangerine.

Cancer will need lots of festive felicitations this year and you can help. Buy them a manicure set and get those talons in order! Also buy underwear (double gusset) and a tangerine. If only Leos were really cats. We could simply buy an odd shaped bag of catnip and a rope-covered pillar to scratch. But they’re not, so it’s underwear (skimpy) and a tangerine. Easy, basques, peephole brassieres and panties, thongs, fishnets, silky negligees, stilletos, gimp masks, bondage trousers and a few items in rubber – oh, and some talcum powder.
Well balanced Libra will react well even if given a rubbish gift but it’s no excuse to be lazy. Librans will enjoy magazine subscriptions and underwear (stout) and a tangerine. Satanic paraphenalia makes and ideal gift for a Scorpio: skulls, bells and candles, chalk and body paint will all go down well. As will underwear (anything in leather) and a tangerine. A compilation of the great Sir Cliff’s Christmas hits is ideal, even if you bought it last year, a Sagi will have forgotten. Underwear (incontinence) and a tangerine (peeled).
Capricorn will delight at being woken up by an assortment of meat products. I plan to give the Capricorn in my life a salami or two. Underwear (paper) will go down a treat as will the tangerine. For Aquarians I’ve been to the beach and brought back a bag of pebbles. Wrap them in tissue and give them a mystical name. No underwear (commando) but yes to a tangerine. For Pisces, the perfect gift this Christmas will be anything not fish related. How they must get sick of it. I will however be in Bardsleys. Buy underwear (sexy) and a tangerine.

L7 INTERVIEW 11 You also played alongside David Bowie, were you a fan of his music? Yes I was, I was a big fan of his albums Heroes and Low. I was not crazy about the glam stuff, and the make-up. What were your early musical influences? The first music I really loved was Bach, then The Beatles, then Beethoven, and then jumping to Debussy – BBBD. I can see the influence of Bach – the mathematical nature of his writing and the fact that you too use pattern in your writing. My music is not as mathematical as Bach, I wish it was [laughs]. Do you think you have become more emotional as a composer as you have developed? I didn’t want to be emotional, I wish I could be more mathematical. But I was aware of the pleasure that listening to emotional writing gives.
THE ACCIDENTAL POP STAR Andrew Kay talks to legendary composer, producer and pianist Ryuichi Sakamoto as he arrives on his first UK tour in 15 years yuichi Sakamoto was studying musical composition when, by chance, he became a major international pop star with the electronic pop band Yellow Magic Orchestra. It was a trigger for the most extraordinary career, which has seen him become a screen actor and composer, working with some of the greatest directors, actors and musicians. And along the way he still finds time to compose and perform his own music. We met in Soho, London, as he was about to embark on the European leg of an extensive international tour.
R
It was a great stepping stone for you as you went on to work with people like David Byrne [with whom Ryuichi wrote the Oscar-winning soundtrack to The Last Emperor]. Was that how you entered the world of film score composition? No, YMO opened a door to the world of pop for me and I met and became friends with a lot of great musicians. That was good. But my introduction to film writing came from Nagisa Oshima, who directed Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence and asked me to be in the film and write the soundtrack.
You have released two new albums... Yes, it’s quite complicated, Playing The Piano is transcriptions of some of my orchestral and pop works from the last 30 years and Out Of Noise is an album of new work. It has taken a long time to put out these albums as this business is so chaotic.
Had you had any acting experience? No, none at all. And I hate my acting. I had and have no ambition to be a film actor, the only reason that I did that was because I was a big fan of Mr Oshima from being a kid. It was something I could not turn down, he was someone I admired greatly.
Is that because there has been a breakdown of barriers between the classical and the popular? Only recently yes, but perhaps so. But also, as a listener, there is free music available everywhere which is good for the listener but for the musician this is of course bad. I worry about future generations of musicians as there is no way to make money. Talented musicians may turn to other industries. At this moment there is so much interesting music for free. You trained as a classical musician but you suddenly became a pop star. Do your pop fans still come to hear you play? There are some, yes. Pop stardom was very accidental, I had no intention of becoming a pop star. I was just working with the other two guys in Yellow Magic Orchestra; their background was pop and rock. They were great musicians with good ideas and it was fun. That was the only reason I joined, and suddenly the band became popular which I did not expect.
“I like to stay at home, I do not like to travel. But once I am on stage I feel vibrations from the audience”
You don’t quote any Eastern musical influences... I grew up after the war in Tokyo and everything was Westernised so the music was just not there. After the war everything was washed away. In a way, Japanese people tend to be very drastic so they washed away everything that had gone before. Everything Japanese was bad, everything American was good. On this tour you are performing with two pianos... Yes, one is mechanised and is controlled by a computer. I have played one part which is stored in the memory and then it plays back a very accurate live version of that performance and I duet with that at the second piano. It is hard as we have to take the two pianos with us and it costs a lot.
Playing The Piano is a very stripped down album, was that hard? No it was fun to do, losing all the electronica, synthesizers and computers. It was a challenge but a lot of fun. Do you enjoy performing live too? Mmm... yes and no. I prefer being in my studio playing with sound. And I like to stay at home, I do not like travel. But once I am on stage I enjoy it, I feel vibrations from the audience and it influences the performance. You are a very intense performer... Yes, I sometimes forget the audience are there. I am more a writer than a performer. But I also believe that performance can be a very creative act. You go on stage without a set list... Yes, because I don’t want to get bored. It’s dangerous. I follow my state of mind. I carry a pile of 70 pieces of music and sometimes a theme naturally comes out. That is how each performace takes shape, on that day. ALL THAT JAZZ The sharp and sexy, award-winning musical Chicago comes to Brighton Dome
“M
urder, greed, corruption, exploitation, adultery and treachery. All those things we hold near and dear to our hearts.” So begins the international award-winning musical, Chicago. In an echo of real life events back in the roaring 1920s, nightclub singer Roxie Hart shoots her lover and, along with cell block rival and double-murderess Velma Kelly, fights to keep from death row with the help of smooth-talking lawyer, Billy Flynn (Gary Wilmot). Created by the musical theatre talents of John Kander, Fred Ebb and legendary choreographer Bob Fosse, Chicago’s sexy, sassy score includes ‘All That Jazz’ and ‘Razzle Dazzle’. With six Tony; two Olivier; one Grammy; two Bafta; and six Academy Awards, Chicago truly is “the sharpest, slickest show on the block”, as stated by The Times. A nightclub singer, a double-murderess, a smooth-talking lawyer and a cell block of sin... It would be a crime to miss it. Chicago The Musical, Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, Wednesday 16 to Sunday 20 December, tickets from £17.50, 01273 709709, www.brightondome.org
CINECITY
Never ever after
John Box designs for David Lean’s Nostromo Courtesy of BFI Stills, Posters and Designs
Brighton film festival Cinecity features two programmes this year – one of real films, the other all about ‘the ones that got away’
W
hat do Stanley Kubrick’s Napoleon (starring Jack Nicholson and Ian Holm), Michael Powell’s The Tempest (featuring Frankie Howerd and Malcolm McDowell), Lynne Ramsay’s The Lovely Bones, Terry Gilliam’s Gormenghast, Courtney Love’s Bye Bye Baby and Ken Russell’s Moll Flanders all have in common? Put simply, they don’t exist. Whether through funding short-falls, actor flare-ups, an unending spell in development purgatory or the gradual caving in of the director’s vision, none of these films made it to fruition, instead becoming part of that great wealth of unrealised or unfinished films. As Tim Brown, director of Brighton film festival Cinecity, explains, “These never-mades, or the films that got away, might be a director’s dream project, a folly or a lost masterpiece, but they all share a tantalising enigmatic quality as they remain frozen in a state of preproduction, and viewable only in the mind’s eye.” Which is why this year’s Cinecity festival – which opened last week and runs until 6 December – will this year feature a ‘not showing at this cinema’ event as one of its typically creative strands. In Britains’ Lost Cinema: The Ones That Got Away, renowned film historian Ian Christie will deliver an illustrated presentation all about these phantom films, focusing on those notmade post 1945 including Harold Pinter’s Proust screenplay, David Lean’s
Nostromo and Joe Orton’s Up Against It for The Beatles, which their management feared would destroy their image forever. “It is inevitable that the films that remain unmade far outnumber those where the cameras actually roll,” says Christie. “But that’s not the end of the story – witness Terry Gilliam’s illfated Don Quixote project, the ‘making of’ captured in documentary Lost In Mancha. And of course, some of the featured titles may still make it into production just as Gilliam’s Don Quixote is set to be resurrected a decade after his first attempt”. Other Nevermades events include a screening of Henri-Georges Clouzot’s doomed masterpiece, Inferno (Duke Of York’s, Sunday 29 November), which has been pieced together by directors Serge Bromberg and Ruxandra Medre. Of course, Cinecity still has plenty more fully-fledged films for you to catch over the next fortnight, including special previews of John Hillcoat’s The Road (including a Q&A with the Brighton-based director) at the Duke Of York’s on 25 November, and a matinee screening of Ponyo, from Spirited Away director Hayao Miyazaki, also at the Duke Of York’s, on 28 November. Britain’s Lost Cinema: The Ones That Got Away is at the Sallis Benney Theatre, University Of Brighton, on 30 November. Cinecity runs until 6 December. See our Film Listings for Cinecity screenings and www.cine-city.co.uk for more details about the Nevermades strand.

WAVE WORLD This month: YOGIBAGS
CHELSEA PEARL
Zara Baker gets away from it all underground at Chelsea Harbour Club’s Amida Spa
A
visit to The Amida Spa at Chelsea Harbour Club was pure heaven on one of the wettest and blustery weekends we’ve seen in a long while. I made the hour and 20 minute drive from Brighton to Chelsea with ease, but it’s also very accessible by train. A large free car park made the travel worthwhile and the building, which appears quite ordinary among its surrounds, is a surprising pearl and quite extraordinary inside. The Harbour Club is a busy sports complex; the scale of the place is phenomenal, with the spa itself a level below ground. The Amida Spa has only been open for two years and is an impressive addition to the club. Friendly staff gave a short tour and introduction to the facilities on offer. Big sister in tow, I headed to the changing rooms, where luxury white robes and slippers awaited. Entering the wet spa took me into a completely different world again. There are no windows, and the lighting is tranquil. The 25 metre lap pool glows a serene blue-green. At the far end of the spa, the spectacular hydrotherapy pool is the perfect place to sit and chat or simply unwind. We made use of the different ‘rooms’ in the wet spa, the salt inhalation room in particular. Once I adjusted to the heat, this experience was amazing; my pores opened up, my sinuses felt clearer and my skin had a dewy glow after seconds. After a delicious light lunch, it was back to the spa, and this time, the treatment rooms. I experienced the newest addition to the spa: The Dr Murad glycolic facial peel. This treatment is an ideal anti-ageing facial and also effective at fading acne scarring. The glycolic peel is available in two different strengths and the mildest form will always be used on a first visit. It works differently to a regular facial, the skin tingling as the product works under the surface. It’s nice to feel something really working, and this thorough treatment was the ultimate cleansing facial. The glycolic was gently massaged on the face and, afterwards, a soothing masque applied. My skin was left with a healthy glow and felt completely softened and cleansed. Additional moisturiser was applied that night, but it is suggested not to go about your normal cleansing routine until the following day to allow the facial and its ingredients to continue working. With a glycolic facial, a course of six is recommended for optimum results. The experienced therapists can offer advice on the best facial and treatment to suit your needs. Born to be wild
Zara Baker talks to Sarah Eccleston of Save Our Friends about toys with a conscience
S
ave Our Friends (www.saveourfriends.co.uk) may not be widely known yet, but the Brighton-based company is working hard to present luxurious soft toys that play a huge part in wildlife conservation. Concerned that many of the world’s favourite animals are endangered and may not be around in 10 years’ time, founder Sarah Eccleston created Save Our Friends with her husband and her son’s god father. The brand launched with four environmental ranges: Polar Friends, Ocean Friends, Rainforest Friends and African Friends, with each range offering a minimum of five beloved, endangered toys. “It took six months of hard work to bring the ranges together and quite some time after that to identify the charities and put together all the materials,” says Sarah. “Our toys with a conscience offer large, loveable and cuddly endangered animal toys at great value.” Save Our Friends is about more than cuddly toys. A percentage of their profits support their three charity partners: World Land Trust, Born Free and Marine Conservation Society. “Historically, the world has lost one species to extinction every century,” explains Sarah about their working with wildlife charities. “Now, an estimated 20 to 40 species become extinct every single day – a shocking statistic. “Our world’s favourite animals are in grave danger of becoming extinct, largely as a result of man and what we are doing to the world every single day.” These oversize cuddly toys and the conservation message which comes with them never fail to put a smile on a child’s or adult’s face. “We often work with our children to bounce off ideas, check the toys’ loveability and cuddle factor and test much of our information about the plight of the animals,” says Sarah. “Our children help out quite a lot and are a valuable part of the business.” The toys are made with ethical and fairtrade values, sourced through the very best of suppliers based both in the UK and in the US. Each comes with a presentation box made from recycled materials, depicting the plight of the animal in the wild and explaining why the animal is endangered and what is being done to support the conservation effort. With Christmas just around the corner, buying with Save Our Friends means not only are you purchasing a quality toy, you are also playing a part in wildlife conservation. “As parents of young children, I am delighted to extend environmental and conservation education through super cuddly and lifelike toys,” says Sarah. “All our endangered toys give a connection to the wild and people who buy them always understand the ‘toys with a conscience’ proposition and are happy they are supporting our charity partners as well as giving a timeless gift to love.” 20 toys are available from four environments: African, Ocean, Polar and Rainforest. From lions and tigers to seals and pandas, Save Our Friends toys will make the perfect Christmas gift. Prices from £23.95. Available online at www.saveourfriends.co.uk

Zara Baker finds out how colours reflect our lives with Aura-Soma therapy at Aloka
I
f someone has a positive aura about them, what does that mean? An aura is invisible, a quality that surrounds us in the form of a radiant glowing colour which, if we could see it, would tell us so much more about ourselves. The Aura-Soma colour system is formed to do just that. Perhaps somewhat ironically, Aura-Soma was developed in the ‘80s by a blind chiropodist, Vicky Wall, who devised the colour system as a non-intrusive, self-selective therapy for the soul. So how does it work? I met Aura-Soma practitioner Heather Renshaw at Aloka in Brighton to find out. The layout of Aloka reflects their ‘soil to soul’ initiative. The lower ground floor introduces us to stunning crystals; the ground floor the organic food for sale in the café; and upstairs, you’ll find treatments for the soul including yoga, Traditional Thai Massage and Aura-Soma colour consultations. As soon as you enter the Aura-Soma treatment room, your eyes are drawn to the lightbox on the far wall, which displays 107 brightly coloured bottles. All the colours are here; most are two tone, a few the same colour throughout. The bottles are all made and treated differently according to the colours, essential oils and herbal extracts, crystals and gems which they contain. During the selection process, Heather asked me to select four bottles from the 107 displayed, selecting one at a time. Not only are the colours we choose important, so is the order in which we choose them. We are free to take as long as we need, but are advised to go with our gut feeling – the colour bottles we

are drawn towards at that point may not necessarily be the ones which are our favourite colour. Was I surprised by the colour bottles I opted for? With two of the four, yes – but the reasons were soon to be explained. One bottle reflects our mission and purpose; one our gifts and talents; another the here and now; and the last reflects the energies coming towards us but which we may not recognise yet. This form of self discovery in a bottle allows us to tap into our personality and lifestyle, recognising strengths and restraints. Once these are identified, we can make the changes we desire as we learn more about the essence of who we are. One bottle I chose was the same colour throughout. As previously mentioned, the order in which they are chosen is also important. This particular bottle reflected the sunshine and joy passed to those around me, which is really positive. The matching colour reflected what I want from life and another the genetic lineage – what was wanted by my parents. The matching, positive colour reflects how these wants and needs are the same. The overall theme of the consultation? Lots of joy and happiness. reflecting my path so far and my life at the present. If anything, the bottle selected named ‘Lady Portia’ encouraged me to be kinder to myself. In a quest to bring happiness to those around me, this is an element that can be lost. Having some ‘me time?’ I could definitely go for that. What now? I left the consultation feeling a deeper sense of clarity. I was also positive in thinking about what I have in my life already. The areas we can overcome can be worked at gradually. The bottles and other essences can be purchased and applied daily to the body or into the aura as part of the on-going process of the consultation. They offer support to uplift, nourish, help us to focus and provide energetic protection. It is the energies of herbs, oils, gems and crystals that bring harmony and balance to our aura. A knight at the opera A new Arthurian-themed community opera is coming to Glyndebourne – and you could be in it
T
he world’s greatest opera house is right here in Sussex. It is a temple to excellence but for many it may also seem like a temple to exclusivity. Take a second look. Glyndebourne has an excellent commitment to education and to community, their Touring Company takes them out across the UK every autumn and, since the building of the new theatre, there are many more seats available and at a wider price range. Knight Crew is the latest initiative from Glyndebourne Education, placing youth and the community centre stage in a new commission from Glyndebourne’s first composerin-residence, Julian Phillips. Gareth Malone of BBC TV series The Choir will join the production team, taking on the role of chorus master on his first opera. BBC 2’s Gareth Goes To Glyndebourne will follow the project from its early stages through to the March performances. Created for 14–19 year olds and played out in a contemporary gangland setting, Knight Crew comprises six protagonists, performed by professional singers, joined by 60 young performers from local schools and colleges, as well as a ‘Mothers’ Chorus’ formed of local adults. In the pit, the orchestra will be a combination of professional and youth players.
Ever since its inception in 1986, Glyndebourne Education has made a major commitment to the company’s presentation of new works. This has resulted in many innovative and groundbreaking works, including 2006’s School 4 Lovers: A Hip H' Opera, a hip hopinspired adaptation of Mozart’s Così Fan Tutte, and this year’s The Rim Of The World, in cooperation with seven other UK opera companies. For Glyndebourne’s newest commission, award-winning Brighton author Nicky Singer has joined forces with director John Fulljames to adapt her novel based on the King Arthur legend for the stage. Knight Crew takes place in a contemporary urban setting, with a gritty, urban palette made up of saxophones, brass, electric keyboard, double bass and percussion. The six protagonists, performed by professional singers, will be joined by 60 young performers from local school and colleges, as well as a ‘Mothers Chorus’ formed of local adults. In the pit, the ensemble will be a combination of professional and youth players. Like all Glyndebourne productions, every department will be involved with Knight Crew, bringing the same production standards to bear as expected for the Festival.

LOU RHODES
Steve Hillage and Daevid Allen
With Jeff Hemmings
Although Lamb have recently reformed, singer Lou continues to carve out a career as a solo artist, albeit with many of Lamb’s extended family of musicians. The music is more folky and acoustic based than Lamb, but Rhodes’s voice is still a thing of beauty, as are many of her overtly romantic songs. Wednesday 25 November, Komedia Lou Rhodes
ZEN HUSSIES Extremely fun ska-boogaloo-jazz hybrid from Bristol, a regular on the festival circuit who never fail to engross their audiences thanks to natural frontman Jonah Flatfoot and the highly skilled musicians in the band. They’re playing at Hare & Hounds, a long established pub/venue that is carving out for itself a nice little niche within Brighton’s burgeoning live scene. Saturday 28 November, Hare & Hounds
SUGAR MINOTT A significant driving force in reggae music, Sugar Minott has released over 60 albums in a career that spans four decades. From his days with The Africa Brothers (who included Tony Tuff, also on the bill tonight), eventually Minnott became a star in the UK thanks to such hits as the cover of Michael Jackson’s ‘We’ve Got A Good Thing Going’. More recently he has lent his vocals to the last two Easy Star All Star albums. Saturday 25 November, Concorde 2
THE CROOKES Buzz band who blend their love of ‘60s pop with hanclaps, vocal harmonies and a fondess for things long lost – such as snuff! A bit like The Rumble Strips meets The Coral via The Housemartins. Like all good indie pop, this is invigorating, uplifting and effortless stuff. Monday 3 December, Latest Music Bar
ONE LUMP OR TWO?
Those crazy psychedelic space rockers Gong have been at the tea again, finds Steve Hillage
F
ounded in the summer of love, Gong are celebrating 40 years of touring this year with a reunion that includes founder Daevid Allen and the legendary guitarist Steve Hillage, who was a member back in the early ‘70s. In between Gong outings, Steve has carved out a formidable career that includes signing to Richard Branson’s Virgin, releasing a stream of mildly successful albums, producing work by the likes of The Charlatans and Simple Minds, and being a significant part of the alternative dance scene since the ‘90s with his techno-hybrid outfit, System 7. “Gong has been going continuously since the ‘70s but it’s the first time that myself and Miquette [his partner] have played with them since 1975,” says Steve. “We’ve remained friends all that time but we just drifted apart.” So why now after all these years? “We all met up at one of the annual ‘Unconvention’ events which are put together by Gong fans. We played together and it went from there!” Gongs’ new album is 2032, a major new chapter in the continually evolving Gong mythology which, in its most basic form, is a collection of recurring
characters, themes and ideas, and plenty of tea... The mythology, which was based on a vision Daevid Allen had in which his future was laid before him, is hinted at through many of Gongs’ albums. And in 2032, Planet Gong makes full contact with Planet Earth. “Keen students of Daevid Allen will know that this year is referenced throughout Gong’s music, and that Planet Gong is officially recognised by astronomers, and it’s visible. Full contact is possible...” Whether or not the consumption of ‘tea’ (teapots are everywhere in Gong’s imagery) and its myriad mind-expanding properties has anything to do with the shaping of the Gong sound and it’s inherent philosophy is, of course, anyone’s guess. But there seems no denying that their brand of space rock and surreal psychedelia has a huge fanbase, with plenty of new entrants to their crazy world. “We’ve been observing the audience and it’s an interesting cross-section. There are many veterans in there of course, and old Gong fans, but there’s also a considerable number who weren’t even born when we were at a highpoint back in the ‘70s.” More tea, please? Corn Exchange, Sunday 29 November.

All that glitters... Andy Morton talks to Goldie about that winning persona and staying faithful to the cutting edge
> Tuesday 24 to Monday 30 November >
T
he fact that Goldie is probably just as familiar to Latest 7 readers as to readers of Mix Mag these days tells you a lot. Through acting roles as a Bond villain and a gangster in Guy Ritchie’s Snatch, a short-lived tenancy in the Celebrity Big Brother house and a perversely triumphant runner-up spot in BBC 2’s Maestro, the one-time underground DJ peddling ‘unplayable’ records has seen his currency rise meteorically. He attributes the explosion of creativity in British popular music during the ’90s to ‘the dysfunction of that generation’... Britain was very dark at the time. Oasis, Blur, Tricky, Portishead, Massive Attack, The Stone Roses, rave music – the diversity came out of that. We wanted to have a serious side to the music. If you listen to ‘Angel’ [from his ‘95 album Timeless] now it sounds like a pop record, but I couldn’t get played on KISS FM back in the day. We were trailblazers, the model for the Roni Sizes and the Adam Fs that came later. By contrast, his 1998 Saturnz Return was ‘a middle finger to the industry’. It featured an ambitious 60-minute “D ’n’ B symphony” entitled ‘Mother’, and contributions from Noel Gallagher, KRS One and David Bowie... It’s a kid’s dream, isn’t it? I thought Bowie was pretty audacious to do that – a geezer who’s been writing his own music for forty years to step outside of that. I feel proud that he sang my song. I didn’t expect people to get that music. When I first heard Miles Davis, or The Stranglers, I didn’t really get it. Ten years down the line people look back and say “we missed that one, didn’t we?” I’d like to think I opened some doors. You can wave a chequebook about but getting people on-side, that’s something else. I think it shows what my character’s made of that they got on-side and bought into it. As Goldie himself says, drum ’n’ bass isn’t the easiest of mediums to sell. But the man is his own advert. Look at my persona – you’ll get some working-class geezer in a work van who shouts “Oi, Goldie!” down the street, he knows who Goldie is, roughly; he’s some geezer off the TV, part of the scene, whatever. I play up to that. There are plans to resurrect Mother as a lavish stage presentation... We’re going to be re-recording Timeless next year with a full orchestra. That’s in the works at the moment. I’ve never seen myself as a DJ – I’m an arranger of music.I’m not technically minded, but I’ll give anyone out there a run for their money. I’ve got the dynamic; I’ve matured with the scene. I do think I’ve got to be dutiful in playing music that’s a little bit cutting edge. People say “you’re lucky, you can play that”. No, it’s a choice I have – I’ve created my own luck. I get paid, at 44 years of age, to go out at the weekend and play music I love to other people. You can’t take that for granted, ‘cos I come from being the punter, the geezer who’s sat there listening to Grooverider and Fabio and followed their trail. I’ve got to meet my heroes and play alongside them and I don’t forget the gift in that, d’you know what I mean? Goldie is at the next SPACE event at Latest Music Bar, Manchester Street on 3 December, 7pm, £6 www.thespace.me.uk BRASSERIE FISH & GRILL 3A The Waterfront, Brighton Marina Village, Brighton BN2 5WA 01273 698989

Home is where the art is Christmas is fast approaching and, while we may still be mired in a period of economic uncertainty and cautious optimism, now is as good a time as any to look at purchases that will last further than the end of next year. Following on from the phenomenal success of the Open Houses Festival every May, the Christmas Open Houses began in 2003. This year, due to demand, the exhibitions will be extended by a week, opening over the next three weekends. Nearly 100 houses, flats, studios, shops and galleries will be open, displaying and selling artwork, sculpture, ceramics, jewellery, textiles, lighting, home furnishings, cards and decorations. As we all know, Brighton and Hove is absolutely crammed with talented artists, many of whom are making a living (or supplementing their income) out of their craft. Many beautiful houses and flats will open their doors to the general public in the lead-up to Christmas, offering plenty of opportunites to think about gifts. Among the highlights include Fiona Howard’s homewares at 55 Brunswick Square, a unique House God at 32 Stanford Avenue (which can ensure you never lose that remote control again), pocketable beach huts at 22 Third Avenue, and a custom made baby sling from the Wicked Faerie Grotto at 54 Osborne Villas. Many of the houses also provide food and drink and other entertainment. For instance, The Acupuncture Clinic will be providing acoustic music, storytelling and puppet shows. Artists Open Houses, Christmas 2009, 28/29 November, 5/6 and 12/13 December, www.aoh.org.uk. To read more about Christmas Open Houses see also Latest Business in Latest Homes, p13

The Men Who Stare At Goats (15) Dir: Grant Heslov
What would happen if the US army could harness psychic ability? According to George Clooney in this quite unique comedy, they already have. Journalist Ewan McGregor impulsively decides to tag along as Clooney goes off in search of his missing unit leader, Bill Django (Jeff Bridges). Showing at Odeon and Cineworld
Showing this week The Informant (15) Dir: Steven Soderbergh Matt Damon stars as Whitacre in this comedy drama based on the true story of the FBI’s biggest whistleblower ever. Whitacre gets a bit caught up in the fiction he creates, and so the facts he presents to the FBI become more and more blurred – much to the frustration of the agents he’s working with. Showing at Cineworld
2012 (12A) Dir: Roland Emmerich
The Road (no certificate) Dir: John Hillcoat
The Twilight Saga – New Moon (12A) Dir: Chris Weitz
This is from the guy that brought us Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow, so when he says there’s an end of days – you’d better believe it. Massive effects and a traumatised cast, including John Cusack and Thandie Newton, combine in a struggle for the survival of mankind. Showing at Odeon, Cineworld and Worthing
In case you missed it the first time around – Bella loves the vampire Edward. Ah, nice. He’s the kind of vampire you can take home to mother as he and his family don’t drink human blood. Bless. But gadzooks – Edward still sees himself as a danger to Bella and dashes off, leaving his sweetheart brokenhearted and in a bit of a mess. Good thing best mate Jacob is on hand to help mop up the pieces and integrate her back into normal life. Did we say normal? Strike that and introduce a new werewolf element. Bella’s in danger again and with supernaturals whirling about and loving her as if she were honey to their bees you can be sure many things will be changing here. Stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Michael Sheen and Dakota Fanning. Showing at Cineworld and Odeon
A Christmas Carol 3D (PG) Dir: Robert Zemeckis
Jim Carrey is the bad-tempered Ebenezer Scrooge, barking instructions at his hapless employee Bob Cratchit (Gary Oldman) and rudely refusing his nephew (Colin Firth)’s invitation to
Christmas. Come Christmas night and easy sleep is not on the cards as he is visited by three ghosts of Christmas
(all voiced by Jim Carrey, too), hoping to scare the bejiggers out of him. Showing at Cineworld and Odeon
A much anticipated adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s bleak postapocalyptic tale of a father and son crossing a barren America to get to the sea. With gangs of cannibals and an angry landscape in their way, this delivers a fantastic performance from Viggo Mortenson as the father. Showing at Duke of York’s (Cinecity)
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (CFF-15) Dir: Niels Oplev
Another much-lauded adaptation of a very successful book. Journalist Mikael decides to get a bit of distance from his work when he’s done for defamation, but ends up employed by Swedish industrialist tycoon Vagner to investigate the disappearance and murder of his 16-year-old niece. His research picks up several skeletons, and a lady with a remarkable talent for discovering the undiscoverable. Showing at Duke of York’s (Cinecity)

SMARTY PANTS CHRISTMAS PARTY
T
he great thing about living in Brighton is that we’re not just a favourite destination for top touring comics – we grow our own brilliant performers here too. Who would expect anything less from such an ecologicallyminded city? The Smarty Pants Christmas party has been making the most of this for sometime, mixing up the cream of the local up-and-coming comedy crop with cherry-picked talent from the muso scene. Past shows have included seasoned ska and inspirational BIMM leaders, as well as comics who are now being booked up for gigs all over the country. In the intimate surroundings of the Sanctuary Cella, this is a real bite of the Brighton talent pie. With added chocolate Smarties. Some of the acts promised at this great yuletide celebration include Laugh Your Bits Off Champion ‘09, Ranga – a rapidly rising sure-fire comic on the circuit – the psychotically endearing Sam Savage, and Angus H Little and Jasper Valentine. Plus music from acoustic rock duo Linton Splinters, Ben from The Wasp Factory, and Brighton DJ Graham Askey. Smarty Pants, The Sanctuary Cella, Saturday 28 November, 7.30pm, £5

HERITAGE ORCHESTRA WITH GABRIEL PROKOFIEV, BEARDYMAN AND DJ SWITCH “De La Warr, De La Warr, De La Warr Pa-vil-ion make some noiz-z-z-z-ze!” It was a phrase Bexhill probably hasn’t heard in its lifetime, in any case not rapped out by a worldrenowned beatboxer over a pounding drum ‘n’ bass groove to an audience buzzing with electronica fans, scratch aficionados and juvenile ravers. And it drove home the exhilirating incongruity of the fact that some of the most innovative music programming on the South Coast is now to be found in a town known, and indeed mocked, for its aging population. Marking the start of a residency at Bexhill’s De La Warr Pavilion by the Heritage Orchestra (a classicallytrained, 17-piece orchestra whose talent is matched only by their experimental tenacity), this event began with a performance of Gabriel Prokofiev’s groundbreaking Concerto For Turntable. As World DMC DJ Champion DJ Switch scratched determinedly along with the orchestra, the effect was both impressive (the score full of Hitchcockian menace with a dark Soviet pulse) and rather sweet. In the entirely improvised second half, billed as a battle between beatboxer Darren Foreman (aka Beardyman) and the Heritage Orchestra, he and the orchestra’s young conductor built dubstep grooves, jungle rhythms and soaring techno vistas (complete with a snatch of Leftfield’s Release The Pressure from the human sampler) using nothing more than a pointing stick and a cardboard cut-out of a keyboard. By any standards the result was, as Beardyman put it, “sick”. Experienced in Bexhill, it felt pretty cataclysmic. De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill, 14 November ✪✪✪✪✪ Bella Todd
THE SPECIALS Although they only made two albums (one of which was, by almost
universal agreement, poor) and released a clutch of singles, Coventry's The Specials have attained exalted, almost iconic status for their all-inclusive skank, combining rocksteady and ska with a political and social conscience that is as relevant now as it was in the ‘70s and ‘80s. With an original line-up that only lacks Jerry Dammers, the band have become a massively profitable cash cow. Good for them – and yet this show was lacklustre, the onstage banter weak, the sound ropey and the beer watery. It was a bit of a celebration of past glories. Where was the here and now? Brighton Centre, 18 November ✪✪✪✪✪ Jeff Hemmings
ONE TASTE One Taste events promise undiscovered but generally jawdropping UK talent and this line-up proved no exception. From the spoken word of Inua Ellams to Brighton's very own Dan 'The Hat' Clarke, the night started promisingly enough before we were treated to an exquisite trio named Bunty, Le Jule and Lee, far better heard than described. However the trump card was Mark Hole, a somewhat music hall version of Jamie Cullum and Tom Baxter's lovechild doing Supertramp-like tunes. Weird but brilliant. This event coincided with the sad end of Chris and Amanda's tenure at the celebrated Hanbury venue. Let's hope One Taste find a new Brighton venue soon. Our city was made to host such exciting, maverick talent. Hanbury Club, 15 November ✪✪✪✪✪ Mark Ede
COMEDY CHUCKLE A collection of local comedy talent came together to raise money this month for Sussex Cancer Fund. The audience were a little thin on the ground but they proved to be great sports. Special mention should go to loveable misanthrope Robin Buckland who closed the first section, injecting some real energy and spirit into the night; Ged Butcher, whose dry yet likeable – bordering on cheeky – persona and audience interaction kept that energy up for the second section; and to the charmingly hilarious Romesh Ranganathan. The night was rounded off brilliantly with a storming set from local improvisers The Maydays, who impressed all with their on-the-ball performance. All in all, a great concept for a night that definitely deserves a bigger audience. Latest Music Bar, 13 November ✪✪✪✪✪ Angela Barnes

righton was definitely privileged to be the first stop on Snow Patrol’s ‘Reworked’ tour. Frontman Gary Lightbody apologised to those expecting a more ‘upbeat’ night, but rightly pointed out that we should have known what we were getting into. As the tour name suggests, this more intimate, completely seated gig reworked well-loved material, and old favourites that hadn’t been played live in a very long time were performed in sensational style. The Irish alt-rock band were on top form, Gary charming the crowd with his witty banter between songs. At first, he seemed quite apprehensive as to whether they could pull this off. Being the first night of the tour and all, nerves were to be expected. But he needn’t have worried. The audience were won over by this unassuming, talented band, whose frontman took to the stage in a suit. “I made the effort and dressed up for you guys,” he told us. “It itches.” To be honest, he could have said nothing at all and just sung his way through each of
the two sets and the audience would have been just as overwhelmed. Their vocal talents are incredible, and it was refreshing to hear a strong voice whose backing music never over-empowered the singing, or vice versa. Maybe I’ve just been subjected to too much X Factor. Whatever the case, Snow Patrol showed us they can perform. I was struck by the clarity and strength of their vocals above all else, and delighted to hear familiar songs I’ve heard numerous times be performed in an individual style. Also impressive were the talented backing strings (complete with harpist, violin and cello) that made ‘Chasing Cars’ sound truly phenomenal – and the stage look a very busy place to be. Old favourite ‘Starfighter Pilot’ was equally as remarkable. The band have been through various guises, and with a force this strong, they will be around a long time yet. Sorry to say, Leona, but ‘Run’ was performed just as it should be, too. A perfect show. Zara Baker

‘Primeval with police badges’
ast weekend I had the honour of co-presenting the Sussex Sports Awards, which was attended by 550 people who are involved and excel in sport at all levels. My co-host for the evening was former World, European and Commonwealth 400m champion Derek Redmond who, despite all his medals, is probably more famous for a race he didn’t “My co-host was Derek actually win. In the 1992 Redmond, more famous Barcelona Olympics he was second favourite for a race he didn’t for 400m gold, but disaster struck when actually win” his hamstring snapped mid way through the semi-final. Amazingly, despite being in agony, he picked himself up off the track and, with the help of his dad, hobbled his way over the finish line in an unbelievable display of strength and determination. We all watched the video of this just after I welcomed him on stage, and it was an awe-inspiring way to begin the award ceremony. The thing is though, we didn’t really need it, as we had so many inspiring people of our own in the room to look up to. For example, the Brighton and Hove Special Olympics Team, who were only formed in 2008 but won nine gold, 11 silver and four bronze medals at the Great Britain Special Olympics in July and were crowned Team of the Year. Or Eventer Emily Llewellynn, who has the commitment and dedication to avoid the social distractions of being a student at Sussex University to win the National U25 Championships as well as being part of the gold winning Youth GB Team at the European Championships, and became our Young Sports Personality of the Year. Sacha Kindred is a tremendous swimmer who can add Disabled Sports Personality of the Year to the 350 medals to his name, including the three golds won at the European Championships this year, and an OBE! And Olympic swimmer Gemma Spofforth fully deserved the Sports Personality of the Year Award after she broke the world record, and won gold, in the 100 metre backstroke at the World Championships in Rome this year. And finally, the Lifetime Achievement Award went to former South-East Regional Director for Sport England, Jack Wilkinson, for three decades of tirelessly driving sport in our community. He has been described as the “Superman of Sussex Sport”. We may not have the most successful football or rugby clubs here in Sussex (although we can boast of the best one-day cricket team in the country!), but we do have a county rich with people who compete, not for fame or fortune, but for the love of sport, and I felt privileged to be part of an evening where they, and their support network, received the recognition they deserve for their superb achievements. Join Tony Marks on Sport Saturday on Brighton’s Juice 107.2 every Saturday afternoon from 2pm.
Paradox, BBC1 Tuesday
A
ccording to dictionary.com, a paradox is ‘a statement or proposition that seems selfcontradictory or absurd but in reality expresses a possible truth’. Perhaps it’s like saying the goat ate your homework. Highly improbable, highly unlikely, and to many seemingly utterly impossible but there is an off chance that it just might be true. The goat’s name was Dulcie, and yes it was a rather eccentric school. Now for the BBC drama ‘Paradox’. There’s this very bright and rather socially inept (although I get the impression that’s actually supposed to come across as dark and mysterious – potato, potato) scientist studying weather patterns in space. Oh! Look at the pretty shooting Mars flares! Anyway, that’s his job. And it’s dead high security. Bit suss but we’ll go with it. And some random pictures are downloaded in the middle of the night onto his top security computer that’s not supposed to be networked to anything. He’s not a happy chappy. Especially when those images are timestamped from the future and tell the story of a bit of a train disaster. But what to do? Well, what you can do is use your high-powered security clearance to request a cop who’s both intelligent and open-minded. Enter Tamzin Outhwaite. She’s driven, creative of thought, respected by her boss and prepared to go that extra mile. Admittedly, it still sounds like whoever gave her that sparkling dialogue back at Hotel Babylon is still a little too involved. Sparkling wit this lady has not, but a plodding
delivery and nice hair are always a bonus in a lady police officer. Oh, and inner conflict. Must have some of that. Here’s hoping these are just teething problems. Joining Tammy are a couple of her plod colleagues – one tenacious and by the book and the other brim full of gut instinct and, probably, a drink problem. Together the three of them start investigating the images, at first suspicious that the brilliant scientist has plotted this future calamity and then embarking on a race against time to stop it. Where do the images come from? How much does the clever clogs really know? Is Tammy going to end up jumping all of the crew over the course of the series, or simply exude simmering undertones of unfulfilled desire in order to get another series? Does anyone know? Does anyone care? Actually, that’s a tad harsh, as the premise is good. It’s just that this thinks it’s a bit better than it is. As soon as Paradox realises it’s simply Primeval with police badges and not some kind of Torchwood/ Prime Suspect hybrid the better. With the recent arrival of Defying Gravity joining the stable of Lost, Heroes and Dollhouse in having something lurking at the back, Paradox had better have thought through what its own lurking picturesource might be. This does have promise, though. And originality. Let’s see how it develops. Maybe it’ll start battling against the fates in a philosophical quandary. Maybe it’ll nab another ex S Club 7 member. And maybe it might have a goat finishing their homework for them. Maybe.

wednesday 25 Spooks BBC1, 9pm Most of us have a few people we’d prefer not to bump into. Maybe an ex partner or a boss who hadn’t got the hang of not shouting at us. Lucas’ former torturer turns up. Don’t ever play trump stories with this crew. Anyway, the torturer is here and only talking to Lucas about a possible London bomb. Scary.
True Blood Channel 4, 10pm Have you had enough fun declaring ‘Sookie is mine!’ yet? Plenty of mileage left in that bad boy quote. Good thing Bill survived the fire so he can keep saying it, then, although Sookie’s the only one happy about that. Meanwhile Jason and Amy set out to find Lafayette’s V source, and little ole Amy’s very determined.
Gossip Girl ITV2, 8pm XO XO. Having progressed from gossip of high school to gossip of the big wide world, Gossip Girl is certainly widening her net. Especially as actress lady Olivia tries her best to stop Dan from finding out about something she said on the Jimmy Fallon show. National gossip! And Blair and Serena have another fight. Yawn.

friday 27 Beautiful People BBC2, 10pm Feels a bit strange to be reminiscing about how things were only ten years ago, but in 1998 it seems Simon’s main need was for a water feature. He’s seen Ground Force and he knows what he wants. So do the ladies of Melody Crescent – ‘Sloshercise’ with hunky instructor Tiger. Grrr! And Elaine Paige turns up. Nice.
Comedy Showcase Channel 4, 10.05pm US actor David Cross stars in and co-wrote this pilot with Shaun Pye, telling the tale of an American office worker who bluffs his way into a top management job in London. Already squirming in anticipation of the trouble he gets into? Us too. Way out of his depth, who knows if he’ll survive.
Film: The Firm Sky 1, 9pm Probably legal-thriller writer John Grisham’s biggest break was this film getting made. It’s what you could call a gateway adaptation, with its success opening the floodgates to many more to follow. Anyway, this one sees Tom Cruise play a bright young lawyer inadvertently caught in murky doings. Poor dear.
