According to Brightonbased film director John Hillcoat, Stanley Kubrick managed to direct The Shining in such a way that the six year old playing the son had no idea he was appearing in a horror film (yes, even when Jack Nicholson started chasing him with an axe). In the same way, while filming his brilliant new movie The Road (showing at the Duke of York’s this week), Hillcoat managed not to inform child star Kodi Smit-McPhee that it was all about the apocalypse (yes, even when he was being chased by cannibals). But we can’t lie to you. The Road really is one of the bleakest films you’ll ever see (although as Nick Cave, who co-wrote the soundtrack, joked at the Cinecity preview back in November, “there is that bit with the can of fruit cocktail”). While we can’t urge you to see it strongly enough, we also recognise that it’s January, and you’re probably feeling grim enough already thank you very much. Which is why our L7 Interview this week is with professional hunk Philip Olivier, star of the funny and feelgood Take That musical Never Forget. Of course, instead of whimpering in your cinema seat or sticking your head in the proverbial sand as four semi-naked men tapdance to ‘I Found Heaven’, you could decide to take positive, anti-apocalypse style action. In this week’s VBites column, Heather Mills has advice on how to make green resolutions you can really stick to, while Andrew Kay sings the praises of buying local produce in his Food & Drink piece all about Slow Food. And this month’s Wave – a bumper New Year, New You special full of cures for your body and soul – also has news of Climate Connections, a bold new story project concerned with challenging the effects of climate change.

The Road From Friday 8 January Duke of York’s “It’s about a love story between a father and a son – and you may notice the apocalypse”. That’s how Brighton-based director John Hillcoat introduced his film version of Cormac McCarthy’s cult classic at a recent sell-out preview screening. Inescapably grim, unshakeably powerful, and utterly essential.

SPACE INTERVIEW
Everywhere man David Morrissey talks to Andy Morton about playing the PM, Nowhere Boy and method acting
D
avid Morrissey is, in his own words, “always looking for a challenging character”. Seen in 2008’s Doctor Who Christmas Special, and as part of a strong ensemble in Red Riding, a TV adaptation of the acclaimed series of novels by David Peace, he’s amongst Britain’s most recognisable contemporary actors. Since debuting at Everyman Youth Theatre alongside Ian Hart and Stephen McGann aged fourteen, he has made hundreds of appearances on both stage and screen, including a much-lauded portrayal of Gordon Brown in Stephen Frears’ political drama, The Deal and a BAFTA nomination for State Of Play in 2003. In 2010 he will return in Sam Taylor Wood’s Lennon biopic Nowhere Boy, a TV series adapted from Mark Billingham’s bestselling Tom Thorne novels (a co-production with the author) and Don’t Worry About Me, his wellreceived 2009 directorial feature debut, is finally set for a TV and DVD release. I begin by asking him about the genesis of the latter: “It was a play I saw [originally] called The Pool, about a Cockney lad who has a one-night stand with a Liverpool girl: it’s basically about them spending 24 hours together, opening up and revealing their secrets. We tend to tell strangers things about our lives that we wouldn’t normally tell friends. I was looking for something to make in my home city of Liverpool. It felt right.” What’s been your most challenging role? [Gordon] Brown was challenging because he was at the heart of the piece. You’re doing a drama where you’re in every scene, practically. But you have a lot of material to play with. Sometimes what’s challenging, like in [John Lennon biopic) Nowhere Boy is that I have very little to play with: I’m in the film for like, two seconds and have to create character in moments. As a Labour Party member, albeit one who has been quite critical of the Blair and Brown administrations, how did he approach playing the party leader? There is a sense of disappointment about New Labour [but] I’d hate any comments I’ve made about Brown to be taken as support for the opposition – I don’t think the answer is across the floor. To me, The Deal read as some kind of Shakespearean tragedy – a man who was destined to be king suddenly being usurped by this young whippersnapper. It did feel as if it was breaking new ground because at that point no-one was doing drama that concentrated on real people who were still alive and at the height of their powers, you know? Different to State Of Play or Red Riding where past events were fictionalised... Red Riding was looking back at the time I grew up in, early ‘80s, but it had a resonance to now which was the sense that a whole higher echelon of people, police forces and local industrialists, were doing unscrupulous things. It seemed very real. My memory of the ’70s and ’80s was a real sense of isolation and one of the great things about Red Riding was the sense of isolation in each character. You’re known for being meticulous in researching parts – working shifts in London kitchens and even learning to play double bass in order to get in character. Are you a ‘method actor’, then? It’s important to me that I’m getting as much of his environment as I can but I very rarely take a character home with me; talk in his voice or walk his walk when I’m not at work. I have to be open to the fact that I’m working with other people and it’s a collaborative process. Sometimes you work with people who think of themselves as ‘method’ and what that means is you can’t talk to them, really; they’re locked up in their own head and they’ve got no space for you. The term does throw up a lot of w******, to be honest. David Morrissey will be a special guest at The Space, along with leading fashion designer, Bella Freud, on Thursday 7 January, at the Latest Music Bar. www.thespace.me.uk

speak from experience. Someone whose wardrobe would confuse a historian who was trying to put me in a social box. After several busy years of fancy dress parties; Goth nights; spiritual vigils on the beach; burlesque balls; Wild Fruit themes and (a personal favourite) Snow Queen on a Burning The Clocks bike, I could probably set up my own costume hire business for Size 10-with-no-bust types. I can join the best of them when it comes to complaining about Brighton and Hove Council (recycling facilities for flats anyone?) but when it comes to their efforts to disguise empty shop fronts with blown up images of local venues, good effort. In Queens Road, there is an empty shop which is boarded up but looks like a café (which must confuse visitors on the walk down from the station – “Now where’s the door?”) and on the other side of the road there is a photo of fit, happy people playing beach volleyball next to the Pump Room. Although they are both good examples of life here, I think they should be showing a pretty unique side of the city. The beach volleyball is special but coffee shops are
pretty well represented in every town with a high street. What we all have here is the freedom to be whoever we want to be and still be accepted. The chances are good that there may even be someone else like us, or at least similar. There’s a fair chance there is a whole community who are ready and willing to include us. Even better, for those of us who don’t want to “belong” but just go about our business, that’s fine too. There’s room for true eccentric individualism. Want to carry a stuffed turkey under your arm all day? Do it. Most visitors “get” Brighton quite quickly but why not encourage them to dress as the alter ego they may be unable to be back home? That is what we should be illustrating in large photographic form on the approach roads. Big, whopping posters of any number of decorative souls who brighten our day. (Can we ask the lady who has pink dreadlocks, is dressed head to roller blade in pink and pushes a pink buggy? Magic). And written right across the top of the poster, “Dress to Express. Disguise or the real you? We really don’t care”. Who are you going to be today?

Heather Mills says there’s one NY resolution we all have to make
I
’m not going to hold back this week. Stop turning a blind eye and wake up to what’s happening to our planet. Complacency won’t stop global warming, the polar ice caps from melting or the destruction of our natural environment. It’s a new year and it’s time to turn over a new leaf. Don’t make excuses about environmental issues having nothing to do with you. It is everyone’s responsibility. Together we are killing the planet, and individually we can make a difference. The food you eat has a global impact. Rearing cattle produces more greenhouse gases than driving cars. You might dismiss this saying I’m exaggerating but this isn’t me speaking, it’s the United Nations. Got your attention now? Maybe you need a little more evidence to be convinced? Friends Of The Earth have worked out that if “Do you remember everyone in the world lived as we do your mum taking in the UK, we’d need three planets. If you only bought what you need (an rotting, slimy bags of alien concept, I know, in this age of pre-packaged salad consumerism), reused stuff, and recycled the things you do get rid of, out of the fridge?” we’d use up less of the planet’s precious resources. It might seem odd to you, but throwing away food is not normal. Think back; do you remember your mum taking rotting, slimy bags of pre-packaged salad out of the fridge once a week and putting them into the bin? If everyone stopped throwing food away, climate-changing emissions could be reduced by the equivalent of taking one in five cars off the road. Puts it in perspective, doesn’t it? Small changes don’t have to impact on your quality of life. But they will save the lives of others in developing countries. One billion people depend on forests for food, fuel and fresh water. Experts say, in Indonesia there will be no more forests left in ten years’ time if they continue to be cut down at the same rate as they are now. My tip? Start small. Make your new year’s resolutions changes that you will hardly even notice. Get into the habit of putting your recycling out, eating one less meal with meat a week, buying products without unnecessary wrapping, and turning your thermostat down by two degrees – hardly a big sacrifice. Tomorrow never comes. Make a difference today.
What green resolution are you pledging to keep this year? comment@thelatest.co.uk

days of headlines with Phil Mills
From job losses and snow storms to Labour’s £10 million visit and Albion’s new boss, 2009 was a year of ups and downs for the city
I
t was a year of tears, fears and cavaliers, a year when the brutal consequences of gambling by maverick city financiers were brought starkly home. We are continuing to suffer the effects of the worst recession in living memory – 2009 saw hundreds, if not thousands of jobs lost in Sussex, 400 alone at Lloyds TSB in Brighton, 115 at Sussex University and another 160 earmarked at Brighton and Hove City Council. The New Year promises economic improvements but it will take time before the employment market feels the benefits – and perhaps years before the nation pays off its debts. There were tears as we grieved for service personnel from Sussex and all parts of the country who were killed or maimed in Afghanistan. And we said goodbye to an old soldier, WWI veteran Henry Allingham, at the amazing age of 113. There are many who would agree
2009 will not go down as the happiest but, there were nevertheless moments of fun, fizz and frivolity. There was great excitement when Gus Poyet took over as manager of Brighton and Hove Albion, and there is great expectation with the prospect of the team playing at the new Falmer ground next summer. But the fact the Seagulls are languishing at the wrong end of Division One is worrying for fans. Colour came to Brighton and Hove when the Labour Party painted the town red and spent an estimated £10 million during their annual conference at the Brighton Centre. Roads were blocked and armed police patrolled the city but the conference brought welcome money in and with it some fun. Gordon Brown came in for the expected ridicule and there were images of him riding the gravy train at a time when MPs’ expenses were causing a storm. Brighton Pier celebrated its 110th
anniversary while the city council unveiled a newly-refurbished 125year-old seafront bandstand. It started to rust just a month after the summer opening ceremony but fans say it still looks fab. The Brighton Festival proved another smash hit and there’s great excitement with news that guest artistic director for 2010 will be the legendary Brian Eno. The weather played its part as usual and there were heavy snowfalls at both the beginning and the end of the year. The city was among the worst affected by the December deluge. The last snow storm dumped 20cm on the city – but brought fun for the kids as dozens of schools closed. Pictures of snowmen on Brighton beach made the news around the world. The city and Sussex will no doubt make headlines in the coming 12 months and we can only hope they will be for all the right reasons. So here’s to 2010. Here’s to the completion of Albion’s new ground, here’s to Albion staying up, to Sussex winning more cricket trophies, to no congestion charge being introduced in the city, to some of the stalled developments starting up again (especially King Alfred), and here’s to more jobs coming to our area and more businesses opening up. Out with the old and in with the new! What are your hopes for our city in 2010? comment@thelatest.co.uk
Brighton and Hove City Council leader Mary Mears on a crucial budget meeting 2010 promises to be a fascinating year in politics both nationally and locally. We are facing a general election in the next few months where we could well get a change of Government and, in February, the Council faces a crucial budget setting process where all political parties will face tough choices. We will be putting forward a package of measures to deliver the lowest council tax rise in the history of the City Council at 2.5 per cent, while maintaining key frontline services. The opposition parties need to decide whether or not
to support our approach – in recent weeks they have united to form a ‘rainbow coalition’ and vote down key policies on transport choice and reduced housing numbers at Brighton Marina. I do hope they support us this time as I think it is only fair to the residents of the city that we keep their local taxes as low as we possibly can in these difficult financial times. A couple of weeks ago I set out, in a speech to the Council, ten priority projects which I hope to make significant progress on during the coming year. These are a mixture of practical measures and longer term redevelopment projects that I hope will inspire a renewed spirit of civic pride and create a city of opportunity for residents, businesses and visitors
Mrs Bibby made a comment [Latest Inbox, L7, 452] about the bus shelter at the Pepperpot on Queens Park Road. The main problem with this bus shelter, which is a listed building, is the condition of the paintwork. I am delighted to say that on Wednesday 16 December parts of the exterior and interior paintwork were repainted and from now on the local street cleaner will visit the bus shelter on a regular basis to check it out, report any problems and remove any litter. In addition the council will shortly be replacing some of the flooring and we hope, budget permitting, to repaint the whole shelter next year. If any member of the public identifies any other issues with this bus shelter they should contact City Clean on 292929. Kevin Kingston, Head of Service Improvement in the Environment Directorate, Brighton and Hove Council [Re Heather Mills’ VBites, L7 454] I think that the gift swap is a great idea. I have done clothes swaps and think the idea of swapping is great and cuts down needless waste. Please keep me posted with details of Heather's swap. Also do you know of any regular clothes swap groups in Brighton? Clare Taylor, by email See this week’s VBites column on p7 for more details about Heather Mills’ swap shop. alike. These include continuing to invest in the city’s council housing stock; expanding our Academy School programme; designing a new ‘gateway’ to the city at Brighton Station; and investing significant extra money in youth services. Brighton and Hove is undoubtedly a great place to live and visit. In a recent survey, 86 per cent of residents said they were satisfied with their local area. However, as a city and as a Council we do face significant financial and social challenges in the coming years. The priorities I set out aim to ensure a complete focus from the Council on issues that matter most to residents and their communities. I hope that they can contribute to making 2010 a happy and prosperous year for all of you.

ONLY JOKING!
Bare cheek Brian Mitchell & Joseph Nixon’s thoroughly scurrilous Brighton column
PREDICTIONS FOR 2010 Yes – we at Bare Cheek have been polishing up our lovely old crystal balls like billy-o to predict what will occur in the coming year. JANUARY A new, baffling and ambiguously marked pedestrian crossing appears on North Street. Bus fares go up again. We continue having the worst weather that we have ever had. Twenty more pubs close down.
APRIL We have a record-breaking warm spell with long, sunlit days and light zephyrs that promise a summer more glorious than any in living memory. Then it never stops bleeding raining for the next four months and eighteen hotels go out of business.
FEBRUARY Another new vicar is appointed to St Peter’s Church and delivers yet another sermon castigating the city-folk for their godlessness. No one gives a toss, particularly not the three old ladies and tramp who make up his congregation. Bus fares go up again.
MAY There are now so many houses taking part in the Artists Open House trail that it is cheaper to print a guide of those not taking part. Bus fares go up again.
MARCH The Duke Of York’s accidentally screens Ai No Corrida at its mums and babies slot. No one notices.
JULY A London broadsheet does its annual silly season feature on “the best bits of Brighton”, getting it all wrong (having spent an afternoon researching on the net) and recommending Harry Ramsden's, Wetherspoons and some pub in that warren of streets south of Western Road that no sane person has entered since 1979.
you will have already seen on such interchangeable programmes as Mock The Week, and Would I Lie To You. An Australian comic does a self-aggrandising show about how outrageous he is, and Stewart Lee does something that deconstructs itself and is lapped up by his twentysomething audience of would-be intellectuals, but doesn’t actually contain any jokes.
AUGUST A somewhat downsized Brighton Pride is largely incident free, as always. Twenty-five more pubs close down. Bus fares go up again.
NOVEMBER Fifteen more pubs close down. One of the bonfire societies at Lewes courts controversy by burning a papier mache effigy of a world leader that is deemed a racist slur, but The Daily Mail weighs in in their defence. Bus fares go up again.
SEPTEMBER Four chains that had appeared copper-bottomed and recession-proof suddenly go into receivership. Their empty premises are then occupied (with what may seem to some to be unseemly haste) by people flogging suspiciously cheap luggage. OCTOBER The comedy festival brings forth a number of big name comedians with interchangeable material that
DECEMBER Those wooden shacks outside the library and Churchill Square shopping centre carry on selling stuff nobody in their right mind would want to eat, wear, give or receive as a present, or employ in a sexual act. The Christmas lights are underwhelming. Thirty-seven pubs close down. Bus fares go up again.
JUNE A minor celebrity briefly considers moving to Hove, throwing the local press into a frenzy of sycophantic speculation, but then decides to stay in London. Ten more pubs close down.

New decade, new year and a new you, Aries. Yes, cast off the old and take on the new. I want to hear that in the next year you’re pulling your weight – and maybe losing some. Make this year your fresh start, Taurus. The stars are telling me that you are a very nice person despite everything I may have written last year. Well, I can’t always be right. Geminis should seize the new year as an opportunity to make new friends and break down barriers. Go out tonight and dance on a table; take your top off even – go mad.

Cancerians should be taking a look at their entire way of life and considering a major move. That could be a geographical move or simply swapping the furniture around. Leos may not have noticed that it is a new millennium yet, let alone a new decade. Do try to keep up, Leo, after all you don’t want the rest of us walking all over you again this year. 2010 is the year of purity for all Virgos. So not much change there. Why not stay home with a nice book and leave the rest of us to our fun and games. Okay? Thanks!
Librans, seize the day, the week ,and the year by the horns and run with it, like the wind, like a coiled spring, like an astrologer searching for a truth – like an over-used simile. Scorpios can sit back and relax for a wee while. You need to, because from next week on, all hell is let loose in your astral firmament. Seriously, hang on, it’s going to be a bumpy ride. Sagis can all now slip into a hibernative state until the end of Lent. Drink a lot of water, have a colonic and Matron will be round to paint your names on your foreheads.
All Capricorns who turned to God after my last briefing, bless you. The rest of you are, of course, all doomed to Hell’s flames for an eternity. Get the drinks in and see you soon. Just because the musical, Hair, is returning to the West End does not mean that Aquarians can strip off. It’s January for goodness sake. Put that scarf back on, there’s a good fellow. Pisceans, start each new year with an open heart and an open mind. I think I mean open, or do I mean empty? Whatever, enjoy it with a portion of Bardsley’s chips.

L7 INTERVIEW 13
SCALLYWAG
Philip Olivier talks to Andrew Kay about his role in the Take That musical Never Forget and that screen kiss that nobody will let him forget
P
hilip Olivier first came to the public’s attention when he joined the cast of soap opera Brookside in 1996 as Timothy ‘Tinhead’ O’Leary, a rebellious Liverpudlian teenager with a character as thick as his Scouse accent. Over the years the character became more rounded, the sharp corners were knocked off, and eventually he emerged as a loveable rogue.
By the time Brookside was cancelled in 2003, Philip had a massive fan base, many of whom were gay men. It was a fact he chose to court with frequent appearances in the gay media, often near-naked. The body was certainly a major selling point, displayed on many calendars over the next few years. He also appeared in Hollyoaks where his character, Adam Tyler, had a notorious gay screen kiss that captured the media’s attention once again. We spoke to him ahead of his arrival in Brighton with the Take That musical Never Forget, in which he plays Dirty Harry the stripper. Forgive me for being cheeky but if you Google Philip Olivier there’s quite a lot of you there – in every sense of the word! Ah yes I know what you mean [laughs]. Had you seen Never Forget before you got the part? No, I had heard about it but not seen it so I didn’t know what to expect. I’ve not trained as a singer or dancer. It’s come as a total shock to me. My agent called me up and said Never Forget would like to see you and I said, ‘Isn’t that a musical? I can’t sing or dance’, and she said, ‘Yeh, I told them that and they still wanna see you’. So I went on their crash course and pushed my boundaries. It was so hard, I was getting so much wrong at the start, god help anyone who saw me in Manchester where we opened. Are you comfortable with it now? Totally, I can’t believe where I have come to in the time, now I’m doing it and think about what to have for dinner. I’m so glad I have done it because the harder the challenge, the greater the reward. You’ve done a lot of reality shows (The Games, Soapstar Superchef, Come Dine With Me) and came across as a really nice guy; is that important to you? It was; I played ‘Tinhead’ for a long time and I used to get a lot of abuse, I hated
going out. But as I grew up I learned how to take it as a compliment, every time I got a bottle over my head or had my nose broken. You played a bad lad, a scally, but in reality you are a nice Catholic school scholarship boy... That’s why I took it as a compliment that they thought I was hard. I needed to find ways of showing that I am not ‘Tinhead’ and show the real me. Did you have any drama training or go straight into TV from school? Yes, I got my first job in a play called Heart And Mind on Channel 4 with Christopher Eccleston. I fell in love with acting and with film. You obviously spend a lot of time making sure you look fit... Yes, towards the end of Brookside I started going to the gym a lot with Leon Lopez, then I did The Games which got me to peak condition. It paid off too because I wouldn’t have got this part without the physique. It adds another string to my bow. Do you worry that you might end up being typecast as just a body? I hope not, the director of Never Forget said that he thought I could bring a whole different aspect to the character of Harry, which was a great compliment. I have even stopped doing the calendars now and I really want to concentrate on being an actor. So the nude calendars served a purpose? Yes, everyone loves money but I guess I was being greedy.
“I learned to take it as a compliment every time I got a bottle over my head or my nose broken” You have been very open to embracing your gay fans, appearing in lots of gay mags all but naked... [Laughs] Yes but always with one object strategically placed. Do you think that you will draw on that fan base here in Brighton? Yes, I hope so. I am totally comfortable with that. I am not worried about the attention. It’s a compliment. That notorious gay screen kiss was very convincing. Did it take a lot of courage? No, it was just a part I had to do, like any other kiss. I took the part to offset the role of ‘Tinhead’ and show that I was different. It made more of an impact and challenged views. I am glad that I could show that character coming to terms with his sexuality. In Wimbledon I had a guy come up to me and say thanks and that, as Adam in Hollyoaks, I had helped him come out. Being on TV is a privileged position and we can use that to get things across. What can we expect from Never Forget this time? It’s a lot slicker now, with new sets and lots of rewrites so well worth coming to see again. There’s a lot more comedy now. I get told off for corpsing on stage but the audience love it. That’s just Philip reverting to bad boy again I guess. Never Forget, Theatre Royal Brighton, Wednesday 6 to Saturday 9 January, 08448 717650, www.theambassadors.com/theatreroyal

They say it is very much a work in progress but the sample we had in ballotine form was very impressive, packed with flavour and with a great texture. Dr Ursula Hudson, chair of Slow Food Brighton and Hove agreed. She is currently busy promoting a new Sussex recipe swap competition (www.sussexrecipes.org.uk) in association with City College, Brighton and Hove Food Partnership, Due South and Spectator Scoff. They hope that people will use the site to share great recipes that champion local produce. It’s open to all and there are three course-based categories. There are also prizes to be won so it’s not just the taking part... Last year I tasted more and more great local food that genuinely is local and by that I mean grown or reared and then cooked here. I also saw the words local misused on far too many occasions and we all need to be wary of that. It has become as rife as the word ‘homemade’ being applied to packet soups had become. added spring to my step. The steamy temperatures barely bother me now and, weirdly, I delight in the cooling sensation of sweat. Bikram is repetitive, following 26 asanas [positions] without variation. Yet each session gives me a dramatically different experience as I discover why small details such as where you put your thumb or chin make a powerful difference. Miraculously, the stiff upper back and knitting needle pains between my shoulders are beginning to ease. I have spent a small fortune on chiropractic and massage treatments and had despaired of being able to shift them. You do not need to be a celebrity or have a perfect body to feel at home at Bikram. Senior citizens and sufferers of debilitating conditions such as ME and arthritis are raving about the dramatic improvements to their health

lthough I had been a keen yogi for years I was nervous when I took my first step into the steamy world of Bikram, where glamour model Jordan is a regular visitor. Firstly, I feared looking a prat in my shabby tracksuit bottoms alongside an army of slender, toned bodies in bikinis and hot pants. Secondly, I wondered how on earth I would survive a punishing 90-minute workout in sweltering 40 degree heat. Curiosity and the promise of a bargain got the better of me. A £20 deal giving unlimited classes for 10 days lured me to find out about the regime that has addicted the likes of Madonna and George Clooney. I first turned up at the Portsladebased studio on a dismal grey day last November. I felt immediately at ease as I stepped from the autumnal gloom into the warm and funky inner world of flaming orange suns. Soon I was stretched on my mat in a darkened room. The session had not even begun but already I was sweating buckets. The lights snapped on and in seconds the class was on its feet with hands clutched under chins, breathing and bellowing, their elbows up to the ceiling. I managed to grasp the basics by sneaking glances at the woman beside me but barely had a chance to put it into practice before the class moved on. Time waits for no man in a Bikram studio. The first session was relentless. My butt strained skyward, chin to chest, nose to knee, toe to face, heel to groin. At the end my face burned, my head spun and my body was quivering from the loss of 500 plus calories. I was destroyed. “You’ll never forget your first class,” says Bikram director Carolyn Jikiemi-Roberts, known to most as ‘CJ’. With a ratio of 45/55 males to females, Bikram has a reputation as the place where single men go to find fit women. But given the red-faced, sweat-sodden state of me and my fellow yogis, it seems doubtful romance could blossom here. At the end of my introductory offer I was surprised to find myself hooked. I noticed new powers of concentration, shiny eyes, clear skin and an
since they started coming to the studio, which opened in January 2009. People do not need any previous experience to take part. “The classes are geared for beginners. You do not need to be fit or flexible. You get fit once you are here,” says CJ. Find out more from www.bikramyogabrighton.com Telephone 01273 420279

Bright outlook After the festive celebrations we can all feel like we need re-tuning, writes Zara Baker
J
anuary can leave many of us unmotivated, feeling low and even depressed. Fight the blues and greet 2010 with optimism, happiness and enthusiasm by setting clear goals and making this your year to shine.
Eat well, live right Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a winter depression that affects an estimated half a million people (www.sada.org.uk). A lack of sunlight is the contributing factor and is hard to overcome here in the UK. If you notice a pattern in your moods – i.e: you feel worse this time of year – SAD may be the cause. It’s important to get plenty of fresh air and exercise; make sure you’re out and about at lunchtime to make the most of the sunshine we do get. Exercise – however hard to get into at first – will release Endorphins (happy hormones) and will make you feel better for it. If you’ve spent December over-indulging in sweet treats, make a healthy meal plan with plenty of heart-warming vegetable soups and stews. Become aware of your breathing: “We often remind students to remember their breath, with a few deep breaths on the hour,” says Jane Clapham, a meditation teacher at Dru Worldwide. “Awareful breathing is the fastest way to turn the stress response, or flight or fight, into the relaxation response.”
Take care of number one Many of us will have spent the Christmas holidays (and most of our time in general) looking out for family and friends, whether the elderly or very young. Chances are, by the new year, you’ll be running on empty. While many of us can feel down that all the excitement and busy fun is over, try and see January instead as a time for change: this is your chance to do what you want, and most importantly, have the time to look out for number one. “Mark out some time for yourself known as ‘my time’ when you can do something that you will enjoy,” suggests Jonathan. Replace your dull January with things you can really get into: start a new hobby or make a list of all the things you want to do and achieve this year.
Positive thinking Don’t under-estimate the power of positive thinking. “Picture yourself already having achieved your goal,” says Jonathan Conway, “for example, in your new job, or being a non smoker; resolving a phobia or having shed a few pounds in weight after the excesses of the holiday period.” It is by picturing your goals already achieved that you can feel motivated to make this a reality.
Long-term blues In more serious cases, depression can be severe and long-term, perhaps stemming back to a childhood trauma or loss. It’s vital not to suffer alone. The same rules as above apply: take some ‘me time,’ exercise and eat well. Talking to a trusted friend or family member can be beneficial, but sometimes it can be easier to confide in a stranger. Counselling may be the best option but is often the hardest leap to take. Don’t suffer alone. In many cases, therapy/counselling sessions can be enough to lift depression. Sometimes, antidepressants will be prescribed. Recent studies have argued the effectiveness of antidepressant drugs with their undesired side effects. Rest assured, your doctor can answer all your concerns relating to prescribed drugs. Studying acupuncture provides the opportunity to change your lifestyle as well as your career as LCTA student, Katie St George explains. “I was a qualified Yoga teacher but I wanted to do more to help people. Acupuncture was the most amazing thing for me. It was an opportunity to help people who are sick and I love the fact that the older you get the better practitioner you become. I also like that it’s not too science-y – it’s quite artistic. There’s a creative element to practising acupuncture which I love, and I love how personal it is.” LCTA’s free Presentation Days are an invaluable way of understanding the opportunities and the practicalities of studying Oriental medicine. Magnificent Milligan Andrew Kay sneaks a look at Adolf Hitler: My Part In His Downfall, which brings Spike Milligan’s war memoir to the stage
S
pike Milligan, like so many great comedians and clowns, suffered terribly from depression. Yet despite that he managed to carve a long and varied career as an entertainer that never seemed to cow tow to the pressure of convention. Poet, novelist, memoirist, jazz trumpeter, satirist, absurdist, TV and radio star – he made them all his own. Few will forget his brilliance as a Goon, and for whole generations his silly verses for kids were their first introduction to poetry. When he sat down to write his memoirs, he tapped into a rich vein. His experience as a conscript in World War II affected him deeply. In the book, he treats the whole with a comedic disdain for the most part; but the underlying thread is a sense of the utterly futile waste that it all was. Whilst never anti war per se, he was clearly disillusioned by the way the war was being run. Now those memoirs have been taken and turned into a stage play. But can it convey that extrovert and yet fragile character? Can the almost surreal juxtaposition of Milligan’s sense of the absurd against the backdrop of the theatre of war be successfully transferred to the stage? Well it can, thanks in part to a cast of talented professionals who, as well as being able to act, can also play a variety of musical instruments. Most of them have to play several roles too but they do this with a speed that is reminiscent of much of Milligan’s TV work. The story starts with Spike’s conscription. He ignores the letter and arrives at the camp late, and is immediately a thorn in the side of authority. Not in the least suited for armed combat, Spike seeks out kindred spirits in the form of fellow jazz fans and musicians and soon they form a band. This acts as a displacement activity for some time, but inevitably the reality of the conflict strikes and, where once the show was all comedic capers, now it is full of the harsh reality of battle. Milligan wrote clearly about how out of place he was in this environment, and on stage this is shown to great effect. Without the support of a sympathetic officer, Milligan finds the reality of war extremely tough. Not that the humour disappears – it simply gets blacker. Eventually, Spike ends up injured and is hospitalised. Confused and battle dazed, he is visited by his friends but clearly something has changed and it is here perhaps that his long fight with depression starts. The staging of the play is brilliantly spartan – a scant set, a few props giving the impression that the story is being told in the style of a Forces concert party. There are clever tricks and witty devices at work, the best being the hospital scene where Milligan’s mates sit on the end of his bed and try to cheer him. Musically, too, the whole works, each actor moving from instrument to instrument as required to continue the theme of that strained British wartime jazz sound peppered with some memorable hit songs.

Sholto Morgan makes an excellent Spike, youthful and innocent at the start, battle worn and disillusioned at the end but never lacking the ability to see the funny or the absurd side of any situation. I saw this at Chichester where the scale of the stage somewhat dwarfed the spartan settings. In the smaller Theatre Royal the show should seem more compact. Either way, this is a not-to-be missed production for lovers of Spike Milligan, offering an insight into the humour that eventually gave rise to The Goons, perhaps the best loved comedy act of the last century. But it is also a moving recollection of the effect that World War II had on the young men who were drafted to fight. SLAVES TO GRAVITY Hard rocking outfit who are developing a healthy audience for their Foo Fightersesque heavy riffage and faintly menacing style. Exhilirating yet doom-laden, uplifting yet Voted Kerrang’s Best British newcomer in 2008, this four-piece rose from the ashes of The Ga-ga’s and Ariel-X. Sunday 10 January, Freebutt

T
Slaves To Gravity
GLENBELT Indie-folk six-piece from Brighton who are slowly emerging as an interesting adddition to a healthy scene that includes the likes of Noah And The Whale, The Melodica, Melody And Me and rootsy indie acts from over the water. Employing banjo, trumpet, accordion, violin, glockenspiel and assorted paraphernalia alongside guitar and bass, their elegant, spoken songs drift effortlessly along a gentle wave of loveliness. Support comes from The Sea Will Decide and Anthony Hurley. Tuesday 5 January, Prince Albert
here’re a number of young punk/hardcore/ rock acts out there who are showing themselves to be more than capable when armed with just acoustic guitars. Denied the big wall of sound that can conceal a lack of songcraft, they are laying bare their talent for all to see, the voice also needing to do more than just rise above the noise. Frank Turner did it recently, with a great deal of success. And InMe’s frontman Dave McPherson has been at it for a while now, trading the rock/punk histrionics for something completely different. With five EPs, a live album and a techno project called Primordial Soup under his belt already, the 27 year old is hard-working, prolific, and a very respected figure on the gig circuit. “InMe is my priority but I found myself with a lot of spare time,” he says. “I wasn’t really pushing myself, so I grabbed the bull by the horns and now I play four to five times a week – I’ll play anywhere, even the dodgiest pubs! It keeps me going and it makes me stronger.” A confident and engaging performer, McPherson has been performing on stage from an
early age (he formed InMe when he was just 13), inspired by his musical family. “When I was eight I said to my folks I wanted to do music; my dad is a pianist – he’ll play anything in his own style! From an early age, melodies and the art of music was imprinted in me.” As a songwriter, McPherson is blossoming; he’s always worn his heart on his sleeve, combining venom with often self-deprecating humour. But as well as his more strident strumming songs there’re some gentler moments such as ‘Listen To The Music’, with its strings and vocal harmonies, and the reflective ‘Last Year’. “I wanted to make something more grandiose; I am a fan of film scores and I’ve been working on the strings for the new album. Hopefully it'll be out in the next few months.” In the meantime, there's an EP of stripped back acoustic songs set for released. How does Dave know if a song is an InMe song or a solo song? “Well, if I want to write an indie song I pick up the electric guitar, and if it’s a Dave McPherson song I pick up the acoustic!” Dave McPherson, 6 January, Latest Music Bar

THE SPACE: DAVID MORRISEY & BELLA FREUD
Polar Nights
The Space (Southern Performance And Creative Energies) is a unique monthly arts and media event, which brings together the creative community with special guest interviews. The first event of 2010 promises particularly interesting conversation, as Briggy Smale welcomes BAFTA-nominated actor David Morrissey and designer Bella Freud. David Morrissey [interviewed on p 4 of this magazine] has played Gordon Brown, appeared alongside David Tennant in 2008’s Doctor Who Christmas Special and starred with Sir Michael Caine in Is Anybody There? Award-winning fashion designer and stylist Bella Freud started working for Vivienne Westwood in the ‘80s. She launched her own label in 1990, and has designed for stars like Madonna, Kate Moss, Nick Cave, Keith Richards, Courtney Love, Marianne Faithful, Jerry Hall and Jane Birkin. In 1999, she made three short films with John Malkovich. Bella is the great granddaughter of Sigmund Freud and daughter of artist Lucian Freud, and her sister, Esther, wrote the acclaimed novel Hideous Kinky based on Esther and Bella's hippie childhood in Morocco. All that plus live music from singer-songwriter Paul Diello. Latest Music Bar, Manchester Streeet, Brighton, 01273 687171, 8pm, £6/£4

Where The Wild Things Are (PG) Dir: Spike Jonze
A misunderstood young boy, Max, lands on an island entirely populated by mysterious and in some cases massive creatures – aka the Wild Things. They embrace him into their community and, desperate for a leader, make Max their new king. But ruling and keeping his subjects happy proves more of a challenge than he bargained on. Spike Jonze directs this screenplay of Maurice Sendak’s classic picture book. Showing at Odeon and Cineworld
Showing this week Did You Hear About The Morgans? (PG) Dir: Marc Lawrence
Manhattan couple Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker’s marriage is on its last legs. Classic comedy form. Unfortunately, they’ve also just witnessed a murder, which means witness protection whisks them away to spend even more time together. Will it be the making or breaking of them? Showing at Odeon and Cineworld
The Road (15) Dir: John Hillcoat
Nine (12A)
Sherlock Holmes (12A)
Dir: Rob Marshall
Dir: Guy Ritchie
Chicago director Marshall is back in force with this musical extravaganza, loosely based upon Federico Fellini’s autobiographical film 8 1/2. Daniel Day-Lewis stars as the director in his midlife crisis both professionally and personally, involving the many women in his life. Co-starring Judi Dench and Nicole Kidman. Showing at Odeon and Cineworld
Expect mystery, action, adventure and a surprisingly adept English accent from Robert Downey Jnr as the eponymous Holmes. Ably assisted by Jude Law’s Doctor Watson (whose English accent should not be as impressive as he IS English), he meets a brand new nemesis. Yes, another one! This time it’s Mark Strong’s Lord Blackwood, out to bring down the entire country with elaborate plotting and new-fangled ideas. Almost worthy of old school Bond. So with remarkable fighting skills added to that notorious intellect, Holmes and Watson set out to save all in director Ritchie’s 21st century fresh take on the famous Baker Street detective. Also starring Rachel McAdams as Irene Adler, a very bright and rather enigmatic lady. Showing at Odeon and Cineworld
Avatar 3D (12A) Dir: James Cameron
A tale of a land far, far away inhabited by tall blue creatures called the Na’vi. On a small part of this world is Hell’s Gate, the human compound with a mix of folk inside it. Disabled soldier Jake
(Sam Worthington) steps into his avatar resembling a Na’vi and meets a female of the species – Neytiri (Zoe
Saldana). Then it all kicks off with discovery and learning and the like. Showing at Cineworld and Odeon
The much anticipated adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s bleak postapocalyptic tale of a father and son crossing a barren America with gangs of cannibals and an angry landscape in their way. Including a fantastic performance from Viggo Mortenson as the father and a soundtrack by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. Offical release after Cinecity’s sneak preview. Showing at Duke of York’s
The Return (12A) Dir: Andrei Zvyagintsev This touching tale from the Russian Federation has an absent father return after 12 years away to take his two young sons on an awkward fishing trip with Dad. This soon turns into a thriller as relationships are challenged. Showing at Duke of York’s

t’s a new year and this time the Sallis Benney Theatre has brought together a whole bunch of fantastic comics to hep fight off those January blues. Fresh-ish from the jungle is Russell Kane, who’s I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here Now! commentary and hi-jinks had us rightly entertained. Of course they did! What else would we expect from a thrice if.comedy-nominated comedian? His highly educated Essex boy comedy is both thoughtprovoking and great fun. Joining Russell is Reginal D Hunter, twice nominated as Best Headliner in the industry Chortle awards. His deep South Georgian drawl is entrancing, his honeyed tones nicely complementing his American alien in the UK material. He also has a philosopher’s edge to his material, along with Kane’s, as they both consider the meaning of life and laughs and the adventures they have had exploring both. Compering this delightful show is the much-loved Lucy Porter, a regular feature of the Edinburgh festival and comedy festivals around the country with stand-up shows that frequently sell out. She’s also well known as a panelist on TV and radio shows – as are the other two – making this a primo line-up. So chuck your blues out the door and skip up to the University of Brighton campus and in to the Sallis Benney Theatre. We’d advise booking online as there aren’t too many ticket to this lovely night left. Wisecrackers, Sallis Benney Theatre, Thursday 7 January, 8pm, £12/9, www.wisecrackers.info

RICKY GERVAIS: SCIENCE
This gig saw vocalist Simon Fowler and drummer Oscar Harrison (switching to piano) deliver a night of hits from their ‘90s heyday. And after 15 years, their devoted fans were still with them, singing along, at full volume, word perfect. They might be one of the most retro of universally retro Brit pop bands, but Ocean Colour Scene actually have hidden depths. Their lyrics are thoughtful, sensitive and intelligent. Many songs are upbeat in message but wistful in tone – an aspect that was brought to the fore hearing them playing acoustically. Simon’s classic rock voice could grace any era of music. Concorde 2, 17 December ✪✪✪✪✪ Paul Keith
Ricky Gervais is a bright spark, as we know from the bountiful awards he’s received, podcasts we’ve heard and previous stand-up shows that we’ve watched. He had a bright concept – science and all that encompasses in its amoral and curious state. He just didn’t seem to have the time to write the show he thought of. It was fun, it was frivolous and it was damning on fat people and autograph hunters but seemed more a cobbling together of ideas than a crafted set. Ricky is fun to watch, but when you know someone can be that good, ‘alright’ doesn’t cut it quite so well. Brighton Centre, 14 December ✪✪✪✪✪ Victoria Nangle
JOOLS HOLLAND AND HIS RHYTHM AND BLUES ORCHESTRA This was a Jools Holland Christmas cracker of a night. A few new tunes eased us into the now familiar blues and big band routine, and new, too, in the guest line-up was rock god Dave Edmunds. I had forgotten what a brilliant musician he is and he perfectly filled the gap left by Lulu this year. Then boom! Ruby Turner took to the stage and the pre-Christmas party really started. An excellent night out that left us grinning. Brighton Centre, 12 December ✪✪✪✪✪ Lynne Edwards
PARAMORE Screeching X Factor-style teens greeted Tennessee’s glossy emo-pop kids Paramore for this sold-out show. Tonight revealed a slick corporate brand, diluting the emo sound to its very limits. Anyone hoping to be pleasantly surprised was let down by a bass-dominated mix, presumably intended to beef-up proceedings, only highlighting chirpy frontwoman Hayley Williams’ meagre vocals and drab song-writing. Occasionally semianthems from this year’s OK-ish Brand New Eyes (namely the Avril Lavigne-ery of ‘Brick By Boring Brick’ and ‘Ignorance’) hit the mark, though for the uninitiated, there was little to stir the interest. Brighton Centre, 17 December ✪✪✪✪✪ Nick Aldwinckle
LONDON PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA
CINDERELLA
Few nicknames for classical compositions carry the weight of Beethoven’s ‘Emperor Concerto’, later bestowed upon the Eb. Op.73 – it suggests an inaccessible magnificence, easily inhibiting any contemporary, personal interpretation. Rarely do any pianist and conductor offer a convincing challenge to the tempi of Schnabel or the solemnity of Richter, but the young Welsh musician Llyr Williams, under the baton of Jukka-Pekka Saraste, offered a lyrical virtuosity and a lightness of touch which brought the familiar masterpiece into glittering, romantic vitality. As finale, the orchestra swooped around the rich and sensuous harmonies of Brahms First Symphony with serious distinction. Brighton Dome, 12 December ✪✪✪✪✪ Louise Schweitzer
This was a rip-roaring, thighslapping, glittering Christmas cracker of a panto starring the lovely Julian Clary as Prince Charming's Aide-deCamp, Dandini, reprising a role he has made his own. The budget for Clary's increasingly flamboyant costumes alone must have been vast – but he is worth it, and the stream of risqué jokes were just the right side of family-friendly. Superb performances from Rosemary Ashe as the Fairy Godmother, Vicky Longley as Cinderella and Joe Tracini as a lively and endearing Buttons made this slick panto an absolute joy. The ugly sisters – played camp disco style – were fabulously over the top. Add the necessary local references, audience participation and songs, and this lavish production delivered the full panto experience. Hawth, Crawley, 13 December ✪✪✪✪✪ Candy McNamara
RAZZLE DAZZLE CHICAGO Brighton Dome, 16 December ✪✪✪✪✪

righton Dome was the perfect setting for a simple staging of Chicago as it made its debut in Brighton. Having seen the West End show seven times, I was delighted to see that the touring production was true to the original in almost every detail. Unlike the West End company, though, aside from the excellent Gary Wilmot this did not boast any stars, with no names from stage, screen or any other backwater of the media. And it was perhaps better for it: there were no comparisons, no ‘‘Didn’t she do well?’’ – just the purity of the show, the strength of the staging, the clarity of the choreography and the brilliant score, in its fullness and not hacked down for the screen. The dancing was razor sharp – a precision that we seldom see the like of. The singing was red hot, the mood sleazy, but the harmonies clean. Gary WIlmot played Billy Flynn as if the role were written for him. The songs came easy to him and he can still step out in style.
Miriam Elwell-Sutton and Twinnie-Lee Moore made a fine pair of murderers, despicable but totally alluring to the end, although at times they seemed a little under-amplified. But at the end of the day this is an ensemble piece, and for it to work every person has to be in the right place on the right beat, and the right note at the right time – and that is exactly what they did. The band, too, drove the show along with great precision. The rough, gin-soaked sound may seem improvised, but for it to work for the dancers it had to be drill-yard precise. G E Weaver as Mary Sunshine hit some surprising notes in more ways than one and, to round off a truly great evening of entertainment, Adam Stafford added real pathos as the downtrodden Amos Hart. This show also showed off the Dome’s great acoustic and sight-lines to full advantage. If only there were a fly tower, it would make a sensational home for large-scale musical and operatic productions. Andrew Kay

Beyond The Boundary Andy Winter on putting politics back into cricket

eadlines being deadlines, I am writing this having put up my Christmas tree with my daughter Clare (who often provides photos for this column) while watching England scrape a draw with South Africa in the first Test. By the time you read this, Christmas will be a distant memory, the second Test will be done and dusted, and the Cape Town Test will be well underway at the beautiful Newlands ground. My love of the game was nurtured watching provincial cricket at Newlands, thanks largely to my older brother, Simon, who allowed his kid brother to tag after him and his friends to watch the likes of Graeme Pollock, Eddie Barlow, Mike Procter, and the youthful Allan Lamb and Garth le Roux, later a star for Sussex. Of course this was the period of sporting isolation for apartheid South Africa, and the sporting and cultural boycott hurt. It made South Africa feel like a pariah nation, which of course it was. Even today, I hear people say that sport and politics should not mix. But how could one separate them in a country whose political system was described as a “crime against humanity”? Edmund Burke said, “All that is necessary for evil to succeed is that good men do nothing”. A lot of good and not so good people said little during the apartheid era which is why Ian Botham remains something of a hero to me, having refused to join rebel tours to South Africa in spite of being offered very good money. There remain ethical “Sport can enrich the dilemmas for cricketers going political process and into 2010. Should one tour Zimbabwe, for example? And, closer to home, who should the break down barriers” new stand at the south end of the County Ground in Sussex be named after? The old indoor school is due for demolition, to be replaced by a state-of-theart media centre and new facilities for players and spectators alike. The current building is known as the Gilligan Stand. Arthur Gilligan was one of Sussex's most successful captains and led England to an Ashes victory over Australia. On that basis the new stand being dedicated to him would be an appropriate honour. Unfortunately, after he retired from the game, Arthur Gilligan became a fascist, serving as the deputy to Oswald Mosely, leader of the British Union of Fascists. I am sure that the powers that be will be mindful of this and will ensure that the new stand will reflect the tolerance and understanding between nations that is part and parcel of the Sussex family. One of my fondest memories of last season was observing during the Sussex/Australia match at Hove, a warm, intimate conversation between Mushtaq Ahmed (Pakistan) and Piyush Chawla (India), united through cricket and Sussex CCC. Sport and politics cannot be separated. In fact, sport can enrich the political process and break down barriers. I wish you a peaceful 2010, and a successful one for Sussex cricket.
Nurse Jackie, BBC2 Monday
W
hat happens when you get scriptwriters who care, writers who care about both how they write and what they write about? Good telly about engaging topics. And what happens if they then meet a network that supports them and hires an excellent ensemble? Nurse Jackie’s what happens. This is laugh out loud ace. Please sir, can I have some more? Edie Falco stars as the titular Nurse Jackie, working in a hospital filled with random nuns, random afflictions and, of course, a few students thrown in. In the chapel, she and fellow nurse Mo-Mo retire to skive and discuss obnoxious Doctor Cooper. Or ‘Coop’, as he insists on being called. This is the doctor that grabs Jacks inappropriately just as she’s at the height of telling him off for being a numpty. Apparently it’s a Tourette’s thing that happens in times of stress. Welcome to Nurse Jackie’s world. In fact, that’s just a small slice of Jackie’s world. I laughed out loud at the wrongness of her flushing the ear of an assaulting diplomat down the toilet; her opening ‘kick’ to the day of inhaled pharmaceuticals; and her confused student nurse’s attempts at integration. Actually, one of the best bits happens outside of the hospital when Jacks and her eccentric British lady doctor friend are enjoying a fine dining experience and desperately ignore the pearled matriarch choking at the next table. Black humour at its best. And that was just the first episode. The second episode is out this coming Monday (11 January) and simply ups the ante from the cracking set up. Guess what – the ear comes back. From round the Ubend! This happens just as student nurse Zoey is hiding in the cubicle muttering on her mobile to her mother that she’s just not sure she can hack it. That ear has timing.
Oh, and in the first two minutes of the show a complete stranger comes in and smacks Jackie square across the face for no discernable reason. This is brash and funny and highly engaging. There’s already a buzz about it Stateside and comments on the web have implied that the more surreal events aren’t far off the mark of actual happenings in real hospitals. Last week saw student nurse Zoey asking if she could take a picture of a monged-out patient who had tried to launch a rocket from his delicate rear in order to warn her brother off such activities. This has just a smidge of a ring of truth. It’s so well acted and scripted it’s got that ‘crazy things happen’ edge, rather than a ‘that’s too crazy to happen’ feel. Nurse Betty is hailed as a saint by her student, but with her decadent lifestyle dovetailing with her dedicated but gung ho professional life, something’s gotta give. When it does I’ll be there, glued to the sofa and wiping tears of laughter from my eyes. It’s so bad, but it’s so very very good.

Celebrity Big Brother Channel 4, 10pm Alright, so this has already started and at the time of going to press we’ve no idea which celebs will be in the house, but as the last celeb edition it’s worth a butchers. Rumoured housemates include Pamela Anderson, fresh from panto, and Jedward – alright, that’s more wishful thinking. Fun all round.
Battlestar Galactica Sky 1, 9pm Woo hoo! Another chance to catch the cult-like remake of the ‘70s sci-fi series. They’re hunky, they’re feisty and they kick ass for survival, as well as telling very valuable lessons about the nature of mankind, like Lee Adama’s first mission as commander of the Pegasus after the Cylon attack. thursday 7 Coronation Street ITV1, 8.30pm Too many questions and not enough answers; that’s the problem here. Will Joe take Ted for a ride? Has Gail got the worst taste in men since Anne Boleyn went ‘go on, then’ to Henry VIII’? Will George and Ken clash over Simon’s education? Is it their business? Actually this is quite fun.
Silent Witness BBC1, 9pm Yup, those crazy coroners are back with their two-parter crime mysteries using all of that clever forensic pathology business. But it ain’t all plain sailing, no siree. Leo comes under suspicion for fraud when an insurance investigator accuses him of falsifying a post-mortem report. Our guys would never do that!
Elvis By The Presleys: Uncut BBC4, 11.05pm The third part in this series telling the story of Elvis Presley’s life and career in the words of those closest to him. Including interviews with his wife Priscilla, daughter Lisa Marie, and other members of his inner circle, as well as rehearsal and on-stage footage, this is a unique insight into a man who became a legend.

Dancing On Ice ITV1, 9pm We don’t yet know who’s taking part, except of course our very own L7 columnist Heather Mills. But we know it’ll be a treat as celebrities push themselves to the limit and try not to slip up on the ice. 2009 champ Ray Quinn will perform an ice dancing duet with his old partner, and it’s all hosted by Holly W and Pip S.
Top Gear BBC3, 7pm It’s a guilty pleasure, like joining in with the Dad Dancing at weddings. Jezza, James and the Hamster are dropped in the Bolivian rainforest armed with three 4x4s they bought from the local small ads. Who’s thinking James’ ugly practical will suddenly look better than Hammy’s pretty broken? Bad fun.

sunday 10 Harry Hill’s The Best Of TV Burp ITV1, 6.15pm Not reliant on the previous week’s television, here are some of the best bits of Harry’s muchloved mickey-taking of what’s on the box. Highlights include Derek Acorah talking to a dog ghost, Heston Blumenthal making some unusual pork scratchings and David Platt’s strange handshake.
Antiques Roadshow BBC1, 7pm Despite its reputation as a grandparents’ favourite, this is compelling stuff. In the first of a new series, watch in awe as the fates arbitrarily price one castoff as the stuff to pay off the mortgage, while another prized possession is exposed as a fake. Fiona Bruce and the team are fab.
Film: A Cinderella Story ITV2, 6.45pm In need of a pick-me-up? Then become at one with the sofa and tuck into this Disney re-hash starring Hilary Duff and One Tree Hill’s Chad Michael Murray. An awkward teenager, a wicked stepmother and an internet courting culminating in a date to the Prom? Sounds close enough to the beloved fairy tale.
