Press release from Simon Kirby MP CITY TV STATION A MUST FOR BRIGHTON AND HOVE MP TELLS MINISTER Simon Kirby, MP for Brighton Kemptown, has written to Culture Secretary, Jeremy Hunt MP, backing the campaign for a city-based TV station, bringing local news and entertainment to the area. Mr Kirby's backing comes following representations he has received from Latest Homes magazine which is promoting the idea of ‘Latest TV’ for the city. Mr Kirby said: “Many people in Brighton consider they have never really had local television, and I believe a city like Brighton and Hove with its rich and varied life would have much to offer a local audience. In my view it would be informative, educational and very entertaining. Cities in the United States, for example, have city-based TV stations that are very popular. Latest Homes magazine has written to the new Culture Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, and I have also written to the Minister, emphasising the need for local TV and city-based focus for Brighton.”

Latest TV Brighton has always deserved its own TV show and indeed its own TV station and now it has got one. Latest Magazines have started a Brightonbased TV show Brighton Lights – check it out at thelatest.co.uk – and we are aiming to create in time a real TV station for Brighton. I was lucky enough to be involved in both the start of Brighton’s first ever listings magazine The Punter which became Latest 7, Latest Homes, Brighton’s – and indeed the UK's – first ever citybased property magazine, and Brighton’s first commercial radio station now called Juice but then called Surf 107. I have always believed passionately that Brighton deserves its own terrestrial television. Almost every city has got their own TV station but a world class city like Brighton hasn’t. Our local TV comes from Southampton or Maidstone. Time – as David Cameron, Nick Clegg and indeed David Miliband says – for change. If you want to be involved in making the programmes about Brighton contact me directly at bill@thelatest.co.uk and if you want great television for Brighton sign our online petition or join our public campaign. Details will follow next week or online... ...and of course watch our first programme at thelatest.co.uk Bill Smith

We’re still riding the high of Brighton Festival and Brighton Festival Fringe 2010. Last week we celebrated the best of the fest with the Latest Awards, and this week you can see highlights of the ceremony in our Social Diary Awards Special. Latest Towers is still buzzing with talk of dreamthinkspeak’s Before I sleep, so it came as no great surprise that their performance at the old co-op building has extended its run until July. The void the festival has inevitably left behind has been filled with a fashion frenzy as this past week has seen the ‘Frock Me! Vintage Fashion Fair’ at Brighton Marina, Burt Brill & Cardens Graduate Show, and now Brighton Fashion Week is about to descend on the city! Read our special preview of Brighton Fashion Week in Events. (Hot tips? Don’t miss the launch party at the Hilton Brighton Metropole Hotel and The Trashion Show at the Corn Exchange!) Elsewhere this week, there’s that small thing called the World Cup going on too. As we turn patriotic and St George’s flags adorn cars and houses, Phil Mills urges fans to keep it friendly in Latest News. Our TV pages list all of this week’s games so book your place on the sofa for Saturday night as England take on the USA in their opening match. Of course, there’s the option of soaking up the atmosphere at a local pub. We’ve compiled a handy feature of the best venues screening all the games so you can witness the World Cup in HD while enjoying great local food and fantastic drink deals. If football’s not your cup of tea and you can’t imagine anything worse than seeing Wayne Rooney in crystal clear high-definition, then log onto thelatest.co.uk where Latest TV has now launched! (Read more from Latest Magazines MD Bill Smith, left.) It’s definitely a week to celebrate whether it’s fashion, football or Brighton on TV!

Scams, lawn-mowing wallabies, life-saving cards and Gully and students celebrate

D

ifficult to believe but there are still people in the city falling for the old scam from Nigeria which ends up with victims handing over thousands of pounds in exchange for a promise of greater riches in return. The pledge, of course, is never kept, just like so many cons that offer the elusive free lunch. It's one of several frauds netting villains billions and one highlighted by Sussex Police which joined law enforcement organisations across the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and the Netherlands, in a global day of action. Their simple message is: if the proposition sounds too good to be true, it is. One offer that attracted a lot of attention and has so far generated nothing but fun was the launch of the iPad at the Apple store in Churchill Square. Dozens flocked to be among the first to own the new computer which costs up to £529. Recession? What recession? Another offer, this time of the fury kind, emerged from Leonardslee Gardens in Horsham, West Sussex, where wallabies are being sold off as lawnmowers, from about £450 a time. You get less bovver and hovver with a hopper, according to fans of the kangaroo-like creatures. “We estimate they do the work of two full-time gardeners,” said Leonardslee’s Robin Loder.

Warm, sunny weather at last returned to the city but shocked beach-goers called police when they saw a baby catching more of the sun’s rays than was good for him. The baby was taken to hospital with 40 per cent burns and the case has been taken up by authorities in London where the family lives. There were tears and drug warnings from another family following the death of Sharon McLaughlin at Worthing police custody centre. The incident is under investigation and, in a statement, her grief-stricken family described her as a beloved mother, daughter and sister. “Sharon was a kind hearted girl who was able to light up any room with her presence and infectious smile. She left us with so many treasured memories that will never be forgotten. “Sadly, she was influenced by people who described themselves as friends, and she became involved with heavy drugs. However, this terrible addiction never changed her kind nature and the love for her daughter and family.” “This is another sad example of the destructive nature of drugs for its users and their families. We are determined the circumstances surrounding this incident are fully investigated in order to establish whether Sharon was given the duty of care she deserved.”

Meanwhile, a potentially lifesaving card is being launched in Kent and Sussex to ensure that motorcyclists get rapid medical attention if they are involved in a road traffic collision. The ambulance service and the Highways Agency hope riders will fill in the cards with life-saving information about themselves, next of kin and any medical history, which could help clinicians following an accident. And while on football, England's cross of St George is flying high around the city like never before as the nation prepares for the start of the World Cup, and cars, pubs and people's homes are festooned in red and white. The Python 40th Reunion was at the Ziegfeld Theatre in New York, where all the chaps received their BAFTAs. I had the honour of accepting Graham Chapman’s for him. The show at The Royal Albert Hall was wonderful with great funny moments, though sadly, John [Cleese] wasn’t able to join us there. His role was taken by Sanjeev Bhaskar. The new Python book, Monty Python Live!, is also out now – about our touring days. It’s the never-beforetold story of six and a half men and a girl on the road!

Our very own Python, the glamorous Carol Cleveland, having lunch at Brasserie Pascal in Hove. The fame of Monty Python never dies, and Carol stars in the new DVD, Not the Messiah (He’s A Very Naughty Boy), out 14 June. This feisty celebration of 40 years of Monty Python features an oratorio based on The Life Of Brian, written by Eric Idle and collaborator John Du Prez, performed live at the Royal Albert Hall. More exotically, we see Carol these days walking the strawberry dog in the latest TV advert for Pimm’s.

henever I tell people I’ve been to the cinema by myself, their reaction is always the same. “You should’ve called me,” they say, in the voice people reserve for those who have lost a cherished family pet. “I would have come with you.” I then have to carefully explain that the reason I didn’t call them – in fact the reason I didn’t call anyone – is that I quite like going to the cinema by myself. To me, it doesn’t get better than kicking back, stuffing my face with a non-shared bucket of popcorn, and watching a movie without one of my friends leaning in every five minutes to hiss: “You mean he was a ghost the whole time?” Generally, though, people don’t understand what it is that makes these trips so appealing to me. They look aghast, as if I’ve just confessed I sat through the entire thing with my eyes closed, or intentionally watched a film starring Jennifer Aniston. I mean, what’s the problem? We’re talking about sitting in a darkened room for two hours, and I’m considered weird because I don’t need company? Bearing this in mind, then, I should have known what to expect when I broke the news that, as of this month, I will be moving into a flat on my own. “Oh great,” says H, deadpan. “I see how this is going to pan out. You’ll be ringing every night with your head on the grill pan, wailing you’re alone and threatening to gas yourself to death.” “Hardly,” I reply. “It’s all electric these days, and besides, I’m really looking

forward to it. Things here are not good.” This is true. My living situation has, over recent months, gone from bad to worse. Sharing a flat with two ex-boyfriends who hate each other was never exactly going to be a breeze, but– since one of them started channelling Michael Douglas in 1993 ‘ordinary Joe goes raving mad’ thriller Falling Down – it’s become a full blown hurricane. “Did I tell you he bit M the other day? Yep, during an argument. Bit him and threw his laptop down the hall. The guy’s 29 years old...” Seriously, what it is about living alone that unnerves people so much? Ever since Hansel and Gretel tripped up the path to that gingerbread house, we’ve been warned away from those who live in solitude. Yet while we’ve matured enough to realise nobody’s going to fling us into their oven, the warning remains; if you’re on your own, you’re either pathetic (Bridget Jones) or psychotic (Patrick Bateman). Well sorry, but I’ll take living alone over being chewed to death by a sociopath any day. I for one can’t wait to have my own space, my own bathroom, and my own oven. Into which I shall be throwing nothing but my dinner. And, if all else fails, my head.

LOCAL LIVES

The Dukes Of Hazzard The flyaway-haired, tight-shirted, bootlegging, Confederacy-loving, fast-driving renegades were on an incomplete jigsaw that, capitalising on kitsch value, was sold for about a fiver to a student in Snooper's Paradise.

(ex-girlfriend now, rather.) At first we worried it might be a bit outrageous, but then we thought, hey, well, we are outrageous, and so are our readers, so what the heck! We’re currently on issue 5, which you can find in most boozers. It's the one with Jack Whitehall dressed as a chicken on the front. We’ve all got our own roles on the mag. Dan’s in charge of reviews, Dan does the features, Dan takes the photographs, and I'm the head honcho: J. Jonah Jameson editor in chief. Actually, I'm usually not in the office – too busy skateboarding I'm ashamed to say! – and I usually only pop in to write those “that's enough. You're fired – Ed” bits. I'm very proud of the magazine. I like to think we're like a cross between SchNEWS and The Argus, with maybe a soupçon of The New York Times thrown in. I probably shouldn't be complacent – after all, plenty of other free Brighton rags have gone to the wall in the past – but I like to think we provide things that they didn't. We'll still be here in 10 years, mark my words. Anyway – better go now, I'm putting together an article about the history of the kazoo. Since this interview was conducted, Donkey Whore has folded.

John Stuart Mill The great political philosopher, on a dirty weekend here in 1856, after a day-long session in The Cricketers got into a row with mistress Harriet Taylor and was locked out of his B&B. He spent the night sleeping in a doorway where now stands Moshi Moshi. Toni Basil The Philadelphian dancer and singer-songwriter appeared, somewhat surprisingly, in the remarkably amateurish ‘Mardi Gras’ sequence in Easy Rider which, slowed down to one frame per second, once formed part of an installation in an end-of-year show at the Sallis Benney.

o. Hi there. I've been down in ol' Brighthelmstone for three years now. I used to live in Shoreditch, but to be honest, things got a bit hot for the jossinator up there. Let's just say I offended the wrong people and leave it at that. (Some of those poetry slam guys are real hard cases.) So I moved down here with my friends Dan, Chris, Danny, Dan, Pepe, and Dan. We were really lucky actually, 'cos my dad owns a place on the seafront, which we just totally took over. It's a great pad, and we have some fantastic parties there – last week we had an 'A-Team' one. 250 people came as B.A. Baracus, and I was the only Templeton Peck. Nobody knew who I was supposed to be, which was a bit embarrassing, but c’est la vie! Anyway, after we’d been here a while we decided to do something. Y’know, make a splash. We considered starting a band, but the only one of us who plays an instrument is Dan, who plays the harp, and none of us can sing, so we decided against it. Then it hit us – a local magazine! That's what Brighton really needs – a free mag covering the club scene, with reviews, news and listings. And that's how Donkey Whore was born. The name was my girlfriend Kat's idea

e show the connection to the locale of the famous names on the fronts of our buses.

What we used to say An occasional series in which we struggle to remember the original, simple terms that have been abandoned in favour of ghastly, managerial Americanisms. WHAT WE SAY NOW: “Mash up” Term popularised by the internet, used to describe a composite of data or, latterly, a fusion of two pieces of video or music. Used these days to describe any kind of amalgam: “The new coalition government seems to be built on a mash up of Conservative and Liberal policies.” WHAT WE USED TO SAY: “Combination”

Now this may or may not be true but Aries is more likely to pay someone to commit a crime for them than do it themselves. Which is no less wicked in my book.

Cancer is most likely to commit a crime of passion. They are also likely to be multiple killers and leave a signature. Is your lover a Cancer? If yes, hide the knives.

Libras are dangerous and the most likely star sign to be armed. They can also be corrupt. Now that is a sad fact, if it is true, who knows, I may be channeling bad vibes.

Capricorn will make a good allrounder. Well, I always suspected that you lot were thoroughly bad sorts. I once had my heart stolen by a Capricorn, then thrown away.

Taureans can be very temperamental and therefore dangerous. Well, that’s news to no-one, we all know how dangerous our Taurean friends are.

Leo will commit crime in a silly search for celebrity or fame. Well, it may make you famous for a moment, but once you’re caught that celebrity will do you little good.

Scorpio can be a cruel crook but not as sadistic as Capricorn. Not a great comfort but one that should warn you to keep your nose clean.

Aquarians will have a bash at crimes of revenge – but will probably get it all wrong. Revenge is a dessert best served cold, or is it a nightclub best served hot, I’m not sure.

HGEMINI {May 22–June 21} Gemini never takes things seriously and therefore makes a lousy crook. You will most likely be a con artist or a fraud and a bad one at that. Give up now.

HVIRGO {Aug 23–Sep 22} Virgos tend to be burglars. Who would have thought it? I cannot imagine anything less likely but all that whiter than white stuff must have been a front.

HSAGITTARIUS {Nov 22–Dec 20} Sagis are con artists and unlikely to harm their victims physically. Well, given your reluctance to move that is hardly surprising - but watch your pension book.

HPISCES {Feb 20–Mar 20} Pisceans need to be careful not to fall into the world of drugs. This is best done by sticking to strong tea and a diet of fish and chips. See Roy and Muriel for full details.

Vintage stars A

new Sussex-based festival has sprung out of nowhere it seems. The Vintage festival is the brainchild of Sussex-based designer Wayne Hemmingway and looks set to be one of the most stylish festivals this year. Set in the gorgeous Goodwood Estate (I can’t wait to see Lord March with a glow stick!), Vintage is a celebration of the decades from the ‘40s right through until the ‘80s – so music wise you can expect swing, mod, soul, funk, ska, electro and disco. Accommodation wise, if you don’t want to pitch your tent you can book yourself into gypsy caravans, eco pods, yurts or vintage camper vans. The line-up is pretty eclectic with performances promised by Ronnie Wood, The Buzzcocks, Sophie Ellis Bextor, Paloma Faith, Earth Wind And Fire and even Mick Hucknall – that is what I call varied! Vintage takes place 13–15 August. For more information and tickets log onto www.vintagegoodwood.com. Visitors are encouraged to dress up – see you there!

THE LIFE OF BRIAN Still on the subject of festivals, this year saw legendary musician Brian Eno guest curate the annual Brighton Festival. Born Brian Peter George St. John le Baptiste de la Salle Eno, or more famously known as just plain old Brian, Eno was part of the hugely successful ‘70s band Roxy Music. Later on in his career Brian turned to producing records and has worked with U2, David Byrne and Coldplay to name but a few. But now all the festival costumes and venues are packed away for another year it seems that Brian will miss our fair city a bit too much as he is rumoured to be looking for a permanent pad down here. I spotted Brian several times during the festival wandering around with a huge grin on his face! Indeed, he even rented a flat in the city during the festival to totally immerse himself in our daily lives. Brian, if he moves here SPOTTED! will be in good musical company as we already have such names as Nick Cave, Gary Moore, A very dapper looking Frank and Norman Cook, Dave Gilmore and Chris Difford. Skinner, shopping in a blue Can you image the housewarming party he cream checked overcoat in could throw! Waitrose on Western Road

EVERYONE WANTS PETER Things are still looking up for Hove resident Peter Andre – not only is he hosting the new 5 O’Clock Show for two weeks on Channel 5, but his new fly on wall doc, Peter Andre: The Next Chapter, kicks off on ITV2 this week. Listen out for ITV2 announcer Sarah Powell who some of you may remember was the drive-time presenter on Juice 107.2fm. Look no further than Top Shop as the new Kate Moss collection is now in – our nearest store is Western Road.

orld Cup summers in our city are always a glorious affair (true Brightonians rarely need an excuse to spend an afternoon in the pub), but 2010 is shaping up to be a really good one. Not only have England actually qualified this time around but Fabio Capello’s strong side recently trounced Mexico 3-1 in a Wembley friendly, and next are up against the lesser likes of Algeria, Slovenia and the United States in the opening group stages. Not that we would dare to put the mockers on our boys’ chances but we’ve got a feeling we’re going to do very well indeed in South Africa, all of which means more celebration time! Eastern Eye, just south of Preston Circus, will be holding a World Cup curry night, with matches being shown on the big screen throughout the tournament. They are offering a special menu too, with a starter and main course costing just £9.99. Plus, each table will get assorted nibbles and canapés on the house. Not only that, when you buy two large Cobra beers you receive the third one on the house. Talk about good sports... Just outside the city in Patcham, you can take in all the goals at The Longman, Brighton’s premier football pub that let’s you enjoy the 2010 World Cup in style. Matches will be shown on two large HD projectors and 3D and HD plasma screens. There’s plenty of space whether seated or standing, and fresh and seasonal meals and BBQs are offered, meaning you don’t have to lift a finger and miss out on any of the goals. There’s also the chance to win your own replica World Cup through competitions and events held throughout the tournament.

Love actually Chichester Festival Theatre presents a new musical version of Erich Segal’s Love Story

Photo: Manuel Harlan

“L

ove means never having to say you're sorry.”He is Oliver Barrett IV, a Harvard preppie from a wealthy WASP family on his way to a career in law; she is Jenny Cavilleri, a wise-cracking beauty with a bluecollar father, studying music at Radcliffe. Opposites in almost every way, their chemistry crackles from the moment they meet, but fate decides against these star-crossed lovers. Love Story is one of the most romantic novels of all time and also a hit film. Now, the intimate Minerva Theatre at Chichester Festival Theatre will host the world premiere of the musical version of Love Story. Beautiful and emotional, the poignant story of Jenny Cavilleri and Oliver Barrett IV will make you laugh and cry. It may even break your heart. With sassy dialogue and lyrics by Olivier award-winning lyricist Stephen Clark (Martin Guerre, The Mahabharata) and a brand new score by Emmy and BAFTA award-winning composer Howard Goodall (Mr Bean, QI, Blackadder, The Hired Man and Tartuffe), this is a new musical not to be missed. Seven musicians will take to the stage with the actors in this ‘chamber musical’. The musicians will complement a talented cast led by Michael Xavier, (Curly in Festival ‘09s Oklahoma!), and Emma Williams, the original Truly Scrumptious from the stage version of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. They are joined by Peter Polycarpou (Les Misérables and the BBC’s Birds of a Feather) as Jenny’s father, Phil. Rachel Kavanaugh (Festival ‘08s The Music Man) directs. Unreservedly emotional, Love Story was Erich Segal’s first novel, published in 1970 while he was a classics professor at Yale University. It propelled him to world-wide fame, eclipsing his earlier Hollywood credits which include the screenplay for The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine (1968). Romantic, witty and heart-breaking, Love Story is still rated as one of the top 100 tear-jerkers of all time. In fact, the rich boy/poor girl saga has sold more than 21 million copies worldwide. If you remember it from the ‘70s, relish the nostalgia; if you’ve never read or seen this extraordinary love story, don’t miss it this time round. Love Story, Minerva Theatre, Chichester Festival Theatre, 01243 781312, www.cft.org.uk, until 26 June (no performance on Sundays), 2.15pm matinee Wednesdays and Saturdays, 7.45pm Monday–Saturday, (except Monday 7 June when show time is 7pm), £27.50

Clare Brown of Revitalise finds Pulse yoga delivers all of the benefits of yoga and more

I

thought I’d come across them all – Hatha, Sivananda, Scaravelli, Vinyasa flow, Kundalini, Bikram and Ashtanga – I was wrong! It’s the latest innovation to come from America and with only two teachers trained up in the whole of Europe, I am proud to announce that Pulse yoga is coming to Revitalise in Hove. Pulse yoga is a new exercise paragon that applies micro movements and free weights to basic yoga postures. The sequencing of the postures allows you to flow smoothly through the routine reaping all the benefits of yoga such as flexibility, strength, balance and stamina. At the same time, repetitive pulse movements serve to strengthen, sculpt and tone the core and gluteus muscles, while the use of free weights within the postures defines the muscles of the arms and shoulders. Sharon Smilie, Pulse yoga teacher explains: “Pulse yoga combines all of the best elements of core fusion and yoga. You’ll love the sense of peace and wellbeing, the mental clarity and the highly tuned body that the practice produces.” OK, so this makes Pulse yoga sound relaxed and tranquil – but make no mistake about it – Pulse yoga is a challenging workout and, while there are modifications to the exercises, don’t go expecting a few easy stretches and some chanting. Following my experience, this intense program is best suited to those who do regular exercise and like to be pushed, or to those already practising yoga looking for variety and a new challenge to add to their practice. How do I know? Well, let’s just say after my first Pulse yoga class three hot baths and half a tub of deep heat didn’t even come close! And if you’re looking for something to tone you up before you go on holiday this year, then you’d be crazy not to give this class a try. Revitalise are offering free trials on Thursday 17 June at 6pm and 6.30pm, and then every Thursday after at 5pm. Book yourself a place and feel the benefits for yourself. Not sure your ready to add weights to your yoga workout? Revitalise offers a weekly program of daytime, evening and weekend yoga classes including plenty of choice for beginners. Disciplines covered include Ashtanga yoga, Vinyasa flow yoga, Kundalini yoga and Sivananda yoga as well as yoga for beginners. They also run specialist classes in pregnancy yoga. You can either drop in to any of the yoga classes at Revitalise, paying on the day – or you can save yourself some money and guarantee your place by paying for a six-week course. With Jeff Hemmings

BUNNY MAN

Legendary Scouser Ian McCulloch spreads his time between Echo & The Bunnymen & solo shows, as he tells Jeff Hemmings

O

ver 30 years ago Ian McCulloch, along with Julian Cope and Pete Wylie, made their mark in Liverpool’s burgeoning post-punk scene, first with Crucial Three (who featured all three of the aforementioned) and then, more famously, with Echo & The Bunnymen, a hugely revered band who continue to spread their epic indie-goth around the world. “I’m a bit knackered,” says McCulloch in his almost impenetrable Scouse accent, blunted no doubt by countless cigarettes and drinks over the years. “It’s a bit humid here, I think I’ll leave for Iceland...” Yes, he’s still outwardly gloomy, and yet his comments are always laced with a deep wit that is the hallmark of his solo shows, which he is increasingly enjoying it seems. “I like getting around England: I love the country lanes; getting in the mode, just me and an acoustic guitar.” The Bunnymen achieved their fame back in the ‘80s with a string of acclaimed albums and a smattering of hits including ‘The Back of Love’, ‘The Cutter’, ‘Never Stop’, ‘The Killing Moon’ and ‘Bring On The Dancing Horses’, although the outrageous hyperbole that surrounded the release of Ocean Rain (‘the greatest album ever made’) possibly adversely affected the band, and from there on in their fortunes slumped until McCulloch left the band in 1988, only to re-form in 1997. Nowadays, he divides his time between the band and doing solo gigs here and in Europe. “The gigs I do on my own are a bit Dylan-like, more

informal,” he says. “The songs come and go as they please. I tell a lot of stories; it depends on how it’s going at each gig, I play it by ear... Bunnymen songs, my songs, a couple of covers, and a lot of chat. Anecdotes, a few Bowie impressions... it can be an emotional voyage!” Alongside The Bunnymen, McCulloch has been doing his own thing since the mid-80s when he was asked to record the Kurt Weill penned ‘September Song’ by his label boss at the time. But he only releases new material very occasionally. So far, there have been three solo albums, the last of which was released back in 2003 (Sliding). “I’ve got a lot of songs on the go, but the next album is going to be a Bunnymen album,” he says. Although he loves to get out and about Liverpool remains his home, as it has been since his birth 51 years ago... “I don’t really have to move – I get to travel a lot, and when I am not there, I miss it. “There’s no city like it, the people are funny – go just five miles out and it all changes... It’s a positive place. What we are good at is ‘skipping’ each other; the language and accent and the way sentences are intelligently delivered. We’re good at having a laugh...” An Evening with Ian McCulloch, Saturday 12 June, Komedia.

BRIGHTON FASHION WEEK 2010

European Fields

The sixth Brighton Fashion Week promises to be better than ever with bigger shows, headline names and, of course, oodles of glamour. Showcasing up and coming designers, this year’s event will include live fashion installations, free workshops and talks, competitions, shopping discounts and much more, all kicking off from Wednesday with venues across the city transformed into stylish temples of fashion, with the main shows taking place at the Corn JessyLou Exchange, Brighton Dome. At the Couture Show, Andrew Bannister’s progressive label, studio_805, promises to deliver a collection fusing cunning cuts and clever colours. Bannister honed his pattern cutting skills while on placement at Vivienne Westwood and launched his menswear collection at London Fashion Week in February 2009. Also joining him at the Couture Show will be designer Nikolo Bertok, who some have called the next Valentino; Sarina Poppy, who uses silks, pure wools and vintage fabrics to create one-off pieces; and womenswear designer, Jo Fleming, whose beautiful designs ooze femininity. Playsuit Parlour, Ailsa, Orleans Designs, Ceci Tunn, Kerry Knowles, Kushion and Urban Chic are just some of the designers taking part in the Ready to Wear catwalk shows and Fashion Market being held at the Corn Exchange on Saturday 12 June from 10am to 6pm. Visiting fashionistas can enjoy catwalk shows all day, stalls selling vintage and independent labels and accessories, free makeovers, the chance to win a trip to New York, goody bags for the first 100 people, and the chance to buy exclusive ranges hot off the catwalk. There is also a VIP launch at The Hilton Brighton Metropole Hotel, the UK premier of Jez Eaton’s critically acclaimed Trashion Show, and the Brighton Fashion Week closing party. “Every year the event has grown,” says organiser Liz Bishop, “and this year we’ve attracted big name sponsors who can ensure that we can keep staging the innovative catwalk shows and fashion-related events we’re renowned for. Brighton is the perfect place to stage such an event as it’s vibrant, edgy and not afraid to be a bit different, and the week will definitely reflect this.” Brighton Fashion Week, Wednesday 9 to Saturday 12 June, www.brightonfashionweek.com for the full programme of events.

At the beginning of the 1995 football season, Hans van der Meer set out to take a series of football photographs that avoided the clichéd traditions of modern sports photography. American traveller Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) loves this idea. What’s not to love? And she soon meets the group of volunteers that answer the appeals in the widely travelled letters. It’s while amongst these that she finds and answers a letter that has been lost for 50 years, only to spur its author Claire (Vanessa Redgrave) to travel to Italy, her less than happy grandson Charlie in tow, to find her long-lost soulmate Lorenzo. Suffice to say, the unlikely trio set off on a trip in a red Fiat to find yesterday’s love, hoping for tomorrow’s. BIG CHEER FOR AMAZE

W

hat is the Big Cheer for Amaze? It’s a comedy gig on Thursday 17 June at Brighton Dome featuring some of my favourite comedians: Steve Coogan, Noel Fielding, Simon Evans, Andi Osho and Seann Walsh. Why should I come? Well, it's going to be funny and laughter is proven to be medically beneficial. This is going to be funny enough to claim on Bupa. Is that it? Well, it is a charity gig for a good cause, so you get to feel good about yourself while having fun. It's for a local organisation called Amaze. They do brilliant work helping to support families with special needs children. Why am I telling you this? Well, my name’s Henry Normal, and I set up a TV production company in Brighton 10 years ago with Steve Coogan called Baby Cow. We make Gavin And Stacey, The Mighty Boosh and Johnny Vegas’ show Ideal. As I live in Brighton and have a 12 year old autistic son called Johnny, I have seen the great work Amaze do with training and support: the telephone helpline, workshops and lots of other practical stuff. So when they asked

me to help organise their first comedy fundraiser I made a few calls. So why should you take my word for it? Perhaps because I've spent 30 years working in comedy so I know a funny night out when I see one. Perhaps because I've spent the last 12 years bringing up a special needs child so I know the valuable contribution Amaze are making to Brighton. But maybe I had you at ‘comedy gig’? REVIEWS 25

L7 Under review Read more reviews of local shows online at www.thelatest.co.uk THE SOUND OF MUSIC Expectations were high for Connie Fisher, winner of the BBC Talent Trail. As she took to the stage there was a quietness and fragility to her voice that worried. A few minutes in you realised this was not weakness but drama. Her Maria is, at the start, a girl who matures into the character we have all come to see. Michael Praed makes a dashingly handsome Georg, his voice was just right – not perfect, but perfect for the role. Marilyn Hill Smith as Mother Superior was excellent, her voice on the money from the first note. The children were the real stars and they were well drilled, note perfect and convincing in their roles. The ensemble singing was first class and the set was beautiful, built on stage craft rather then technical wizardry. Arlene Philips too proves that her real talent is as a choreographer and not a TV pundit. The Congress Theatre, Eastbourne, 2 June JJJJJ Andrew Kay

FIELD MUSIC Following a hiatus where they both worked on solo projects, the brothers Brewis have reunited and are touring their new double album Measure. Displaying a flagrant and refreshing disregard for any modern pop music structure, they inhabit a world of music made for musos. A lilting ‘70s soft rock vibe was evident in many songs and, with the angular sound common among North East bands, they came up with epic tone poems rather than three minute pop songs. They are reminiscent of XTC at their best, but tonight they really sounded like Field Music and all the better for it. Audio 26 May JJJJJ Steve Clements

WASHED OUT

BF

One of the most blogged about acts of the past year, Washed Out’s Ernest Greene has a lot to live up to. His sample-led EP has a languid, reminiscing quality but this kind of bedroom-style doesn’t always translate to a dynamic live experience. Greene turned up the ambience with waves of Balearic synth and reverb-drenched vocals, but it was the re-introduction of support-cum-backing band Small Black that breathed life into his small repertoire. Signature tune ‘I Feel it All Around’ was a brilliant reminder of why Washed Out’s chill-

wave is the talk of the indie scene – on such young summer nights his blissful hues were totally irresistible. Freebutt, 2 June JJJJJ Finn Scott-Delaney

GEORGE BENSON + MARTI PELLOW What a fantastic feel-good night! Wet Wet Wet’s Marti Pellow performed tracks from his new solo album The Devil And The Monkey including the amazing ‘Saturday Night, Sunday Morning’. Growing up in the ‘90s with Marti Pellow (thanks to Mum and commercial radio stations) it was quite an experience to hear such a familiar and strong vocalist sing live. Proving that he didn’t need the help of back-up vocals or nifty mixing, his voice came across as strong as ever with ‘Goodnight Girl’ taking me back to childhood. In the second half of the show, soul singer George Benson had the whole crowd dancing with his strong vocals, little chat between numbers and lots of energy – which is just what the audience wanted. ‘Beyond The Sea’ saw the Brighton Centre transform into a dance hall of a bygone era (or how I imagine it would be on a cruise ship). ‘Nothing’s Gonna Change My Love For You’ was the perfect track to sing along with loved ones to, while ‘Give Me The Night’ and ‘Kisses In The Moonlight’ completed a perfect feel-good night. Brighton Centre, 3 June JJJJJ Zara Baker

STEAMPUNK MUSICAL SHOWCASE When The Peryls took to the stage the amazing Victorian film show suited their cello-led gothic melodies. With an audience dressed for the occasion – monocles optional, top hats and basques essential – and the fairground organ music played between sets lent the proceedings a feel of turn-of-the-last-century decadence. Superbly hosted by that pith-helmeted bounder MC Elemental, the evening improved with nightfall but was still too brightly lit. Unveiling their new EP and new singer, Trousseaux seem to be following a more pop-py route but the blend of accordion and harp was reminiscent of The Mummers. A friendly evening of burlesque and saucy dress-up fun. Hector’s House, 28 May JJJJJ Steve Clements

MUSIC WITH GRATITUDE THE UNTHANKS St George's, 24 May JJJJJ

B

eginning with the title track of their third album, this incredible group, on their fourth visit to Brighton in as many years, gently eased into an almost two hour, careerspanning set with a brace of violins and the striking sight of Rachel and Becky Unthank swaying and breathing the words to an ancient song about press gangs. It’s strange to consider these sweet looking and heavenly sounding young women touring the world singing songs about not-so-bygone topics such as domestic abuse and child labour. The 10-piece ensemble, renamed in the folk tradition of using only the family name, borrow heavily from the past but are in no way revivalists. By reworking songs handed down by friends and family and putting their unique spin on carefully chosen modern covers this unique group stand alone in this genre by being so warmly embraced by the mainstream. No more was the latter evident than in Becky’s striking version of Nick Drake’s ‘River Man’ – a song older than she that could have been written with her in mind. Beginning unaccompanied, the piano slowly awakened followed by

bass and violin to complete a sparse and haunting arrangement. During most songs, the Unthank sisters are completely immersed in the music – seemingly as mesmerised as the audience by the sounds they are making. When singing Rachel stands with eyes closed, hands clasped or on her thighs, while Becky rests her right hand on her hip; both swaying and savouring each moment. Rachel’s heartbreaking rendition of Frank Higgins’ tragically futile ‘Testimony Of Patience Kershaw’ was so overwhelming I didn’t even notice it had become dark outside. This song could reduce the most soulless person to tears. Stepping forward, Rachel spoke of hearing her father sing the traditional ‘John Dead’ before they sang it unaccompanied. The band returned for the finale, the ‘world premiere’ of a galloping medley of ‘Blue’s Gaen Oot O’the Fashion’ and ‘Betsy Bell’, which saw the girls deliver a (literally) breathtaking, stitchinducing clogathon. The encore ended an exquisite evening of devastating beauty with former Unthank alumnus, Belinda O’Hooley’s majestic ‘Blackbird’. Steve Clements

The barefoot runner Joe Addison plans where to take his feet next

Telly Talk With Victoria Nangle

“B

arefoot? You've gotta be flippin’ kidding me!" This was the rather angry reaction I got from a guy I ran past during the Sussex Beacon half marathon back in February. I'm not quite sure why he was so upset at my lack of shoes. The weather that day was shocking, torrential rain and strong winds, which might have soured his mood. Or maybe it was because I was overtaking him. Either way, he was cross! But he was the exception. On the whole, reactions to my lack of shoes are quite positive. Plenty of people have read something about it and want to know more. I also get plenty of encouragement from fellow runners and spectators alike. With this in mind I decided to try and set up a barefoot running group over the summer. It will cover the basics and fundamentals of barefoot running and hopefully give people a better understanding of how it could benefit them. So if there is anyone interested in learning how to run barefoot – and why I think it's a good idea – stay tuned. I have been signing up for quite a few races over the last month including the second Brighton marathon next April, which I will be running with my wife (it will be her first marathon). I entered the ballot for the London Marathon next year but won't find out if Marathon Joe’s feet after the Brighton I have a place in that until October. I also entered a race called “I also entered a race Hellrunner which is the one I am really looking called Hellrunner which forward to. It’s an 11(ish) mile race across a cold, is the one I am really wet and muddy army training camp in looking forward to” Hampshire with a section called The Bog of Doom! It's going to be an interesting challenge for my feet, especially in November. Brrrrrr. I’ve just completed the Seaford half marathon (6 June). It was a challenging run covering both on- and off-road running. Now the weather is improving, I am out running a lot more and I'm getting faster and stronger. I am now officially faster over 5km than I was wearing shoes. Barefoot rocks! This is a monthly column about the trials and tribulations of barefoot running. Joe ran the Brighton and London marathons a week apart and barefoot to raise money for visually impaired children. If you would like to sponsor him visit: www.uk.virginmoneygiving.com/joeaddison

OLD SKOOL W

hen I was a kid I remember a great heralder of unconscious peer pressure was when I felt I ought to put aside my copy of The Beano in favour of the more grown-up girl-specific publication, Jackie. It didn’t have many stories, which was the whole point of buying a magazine to my young mind, but it did have the totally boring fashion and beauty pages and some mildly interesting bits about pop stars. I knew I ought to like it, but somehow it never felt like it was aimed at me. And so it is with Lee Nelson’s Well Good Show. Simon Brodkin, the creator of character wide boy Lee Nelson, is a talented actor and performer. A regular on the live comedy circuit, as Lee Nelson, his audience patter and cheek is reminiscent of an early Al Murray with his Pub Landlord character – minus the job. Which shouldn’t be too much of a surprise considering Brodkin was a core cast member of Al Murray’s TV sketch show in 2007. Lee Nelson has an overweight bestie mate who sits on a sofa at one side of the sound stage eating chips. Lee Nelson makes big eyes at a stunning lady audience member and Lee Nelson picks a mock fight with her boyfriend, only to diffuse the situation by pointing out how much more muscle-bound than him the boyfriend is. These are all live performance aids, showing off the ‘living off his wits’ tools of the live comic’s trade. But they don’t translate that well on telly. And I’m not sure I know anyone like Lee Nelson, or have ever met anyone like Lee Nelson to relate to.

First things first, the live comedy element. This has proven difficult to a number of talented performers. As I mentioned earlier, there’s Al Murray’s Pub Landlord. He’s not been everyone’s cup of tea on TV, but did get the ratings in and is incredibly funny at being dumbsmart when performing live. Pappy’s (formerly Pappy’s Fun Club) sketch group did a TV pilot that just failed to capture the mayhem and joy of one of their live shows and so didn’t get recommissioned. Shame. And Lee Nelson’s sharp lines seem more rehearsed simply through the action of being on telly, which is a shame too.

“...showing off the ‘living off his wits’ tools of the live comic’s trade...” Secondly, and my opening point – I’m not its ideal audience. I have a massive collection of friends from different countries and different backgrounds, but I’ve yet to meet a Lee Nelson. This is more than a Jackie magazine – this is The Eagle comic. Which ran for 44 much loved years. It was just never aimed at me. Lee Nelson’s Well Good Show starts on BBC3 on 10 June. follow me on twitter

tuesday 8 Tribal Wives BBC2, 9pm Six British women swap their everyday lives for life as tribal wives with some of the most remote communities on earth. Charlie Brades from Hampshire goes to live with a tribe of nomads in a one-room tent in the mountains of southern Turkey. Hunter-gatherer in Marigolds – rather disturbing image that.

Big Brother’s Big Awards Show Channel 4, 10pm To celebrate our last ever BB series (yeah, really) Davina McCall and the British public bestow accolades upon those housemates deemed memorable for all the right and wrong reasons. With commentary from ex-housemates, Dermot O’Leary, and other celebs. Cringe-a-thon.

Nixon In The Den BBC4, 9pm David Reynolds takes a fresh look at the controversial career and embattled presidency of Richard Nixon. Reynolds sees Nixon as a successful international statesman, but that the methods that won him this acclaim also doomed his presidency in the Watergate scandal. A new light is shed on Dickie’s deception.

thursday 10 Junior Apprentice BBC1, 9pm It’s the final. Lord Sugar calls the candidates to the London Aquarium’s shark tank for their final briefing: they must develop their own brand of bottled water. But in today’s market how can they make their brand stand out? So, who will walk away with the £25,000 prize, and who will be fed to the sharks? You’re fish food.

Springwatch 2010 BBC2, 8pm Live reports on all the animal stars. Have any of Kate and Chris’s chicks flown the nest? Simon heads downstream in one of Dorset’s finest chalk rivers. Martin is out and about showing us how to get more involved in helping wildlife, and has his hands full with some watervoles. Furry little critters. Eek, eek.

Dappers BBC3, 9.30pm Drama based around best friends Faye and Ashley, who are the scourge of ‘broken Britain’ – young mums living on benefits. Happily, they’re determined to become rich businesswomen, whatever it takes. The gals set up Woofitys Day Care for Cared-for Dogs, but things go pear when they lose Gizmo the pug. Innit.

England’s Worst Ever Football Team BBC3, 10.35pm Through a mix of archive footage and talking heads, including Razor Ruddock, this is a lighthearted debate of who should win a place on the shamed team. sunday 13 World Cup Live: Germany V Australia ITV1, 7pm More World Cup action, after yesterday’s South Korea V Greece – oh, and that massive England game – and this morning’s Serbia V Ghana, it’s now time for three-time winners Germany to tackle Australia. monday 14 Gladiators: Back From The Dead Channel 4, 9pm It takes more than rather spiffing gladiator sandals to cut it in the spit and sawdust of the Roman arena, as this documentary strives to explain. Recreating the world of the arena it exposes how six gladiators lived, fought and died, using archeology and forensic anthropology to prove it.

Justin Lee Collins: Good Times Five, 11pm It’s the last instalment of Justin Lee Collins’ cabaret chat show, and he’s got some lovely guests in for it. Actress and writer Jessica Hynes (her who wrote and starred in Spaced!), dancer and reality star Louie Spence and US rocker Adam Lambert. Oh, and Jason Donavan on darts.

Glee E4, 9pm More Quinn focus, which is a good thing as who would’ve thought at the start of this whole raggle taggle funk musical that she’d be moved in with new bestie mate Mercedes by this point? Us neither. She’s a bit anxious about the baby, as it’s due pretty soon. Oh, and regionals are soon. Coincidence?
