Caroline Lucas made history when she was elected as the first Green Party MP. Now, in a comprehensive interview with Bill Smith at The Long Man of Wilmington in Patcham, she talks about climate change, the cuts, BP, the big issues nationally and locally – including academies and the football stadium – and what she loves about Brighton. And you will definitely want to hear how near she was or wasn't to being Minister of Defence in a progressive Labour-led government! That plus all the fun of Paddle Round The Pier and how a trendy Brighton bar, Madame Geisha, has become the Tate Modern of Brighton with the art of Jamie ‘Sex Pistols’ Reid and Goldie. Presented by Val Aviv, Brighton Lights is the TV show all about Brighton. Thanks to the thousands of you who watched the last edition, it’s getting as popular as this magazine! welcome When we were growing up, food was a minefield. Admittedly we were very picky. We wouldn’t eat cheese unless it was melted, tomatoes unless they were burnt, or grapes unless they were prepeeled and left to brown slightly on a plate. But it didn’t help that most food in the ‘80s seemed to be made of that cheap mince which came in an inseperable grey lump. Worse still was a vegetarian alternative (specifically marketed as fake ‘lamb’ mince for some slightly sinister reason) which just went on expanding in the saucepan like a Hammer Horror version of that fairytale about the magic porridge pot. On the rare non-mince front – sorry to go on – we wasted a fair chunk of childhood trying to flush banana curry down the toilet (extraordinarily buoyant, banana curry) while one Christmas was spent hiding the nuts from the middle of Ferrero Rochers under a rug. Anyway, the point is, kids these days seem to have both the benefit of broad choice and some remarkably refined palettes (we heard a small child in Waitrose the other day asking his dad to reach down the green olives in chili oil rather than the black. Then again: Waitrose). So this issue we’ve sent a bunch of them out to review some of the diverse, family-friendly dining experiences this city has to offer. Elsewhere this issue you can read Simon Callow (not Cowell, not Cowell) on Shakespeare, Andrew Kay on a ‘delightful’ prawn cocktail smoothie (who’d’ve thunk it) and Brighton’s own star vet Marc Abraham on his promisingly titled new TV series, My Pet Shame – drooling donkey very much included. Bon appetit!

I mean, you said yourself you can barely afford this place, it’s in not as nice an area, you almost starved to death within the first week of moving in...” I shoot him a look. Although sympathetic at first, it wasn’t long before my friends unanimously decided my bathroom story was too good an opportunity to let go to waste and started bringing it up at every possible opportunity. M, ignoring me, continues unabated. “But now I see what this is really about. The paintings, the cushion covers, it’s so obvious. You’re nesting, aren’t you? You’re trying to attract a husband.” I zip up my cushion and shake my head. If you were to listen to M, you’d think that everything anyone ever does is in the pursuit of a man. But of course he doesn’t understand; he fears being single like a child fears the darkness under the bed. Living alone is his bogeyman.

We don’t all need a man to make us happy you know,” I add, knowing even as the words come out of my mouth this is a bit rich coming from me, who spends every waking moment trying to get one. M snorts and flops on the sofa. “Mind that Habitat throw,” I say. “I thought I’d sit on that later and try to lay an egg.” “Hey, did I tell you The Trader bought me a bottle of Cristal last night? £240.” M, potentially the most upwardly mobile person since Gordon Gekko, has recently been living the high-life after managing to snare himself a city trader. From Michelinstarred restaurants to days out in the Lamborghini, my friend has been in his element. If it’s true I’m building a nest, it’s safe to say M is feathering his. “Wow,” I say, “Cristal. I bet you felt like Kelly Rowland.” M pulls a face. “Actually, I didn’t like it. It’s quite bitter.” Too late. I’m already doing the calculations in my head. £240 would buy me forty cushion covers. Then again, for £240 I could probably buy a man.

Bognor tragedy, payback time for local criminal, and Olympian values for schools

t was an anniversary people would have preferred not to have remembered but a similar tragedy brought the terrible events flooding back. Four-year-old Keira Madden, “a princess” as her father described her, was found dead at her home in Felpham, Bognor, at the same time her mother Cathy, 40, fell to her death from Seven Sisters cliffs near Birling Gap, not far from Beachy Head. And it was at Beachy Head, the scene of so many awful tragedies, that Neil Puttick, 34, and his Japanese wife Kazumi, 44, were found dead just over a year ago. The devastated parents took their own lives three days after their five-year-old disabled son Samuel had died from meningitis. They couldn't live without him. Spare a thought for their families, and the police officers assigned to breaking the dreadful news to them. Spare a well-done, too, to the finance cops whose work resulted in a drug dealer coughing up £45,000. Trevor Dawes, 48, (pictured) from Moulsecoomb, Brighton, had already started his five year sentence and now Judge Niblett at Hove Crown Court declared that Dawes had benefited from his general criminal conduct to the tune of over £200,000, and ordered him to pay a confiscation order £45,700 within six months.
Detective Chief Inspector Ian Pollard said; "If Dawes fails to pay the confiscation order, he will face a further term of imprisonment of 18 months. This ensures that he will have to pay back the profits of his criminal lifestyle. The money recovered from criminals like him will be redistributed back into the criminal justice system and also to community projects as part of the national ‘Community Payback’ Scheme.” Another anniversary slipped by as sunbathers flocked to the beaches of Sussex. It was 70 years ago this month that 40 miles of seafront from Brighton to Selsey were closed off for the duration of the war in case of a Nazi invasion. Hundreds of locals dived into the sea for a last swim just before the order came into effect. Latest 7 reader Lawrence Nettles remembered: “I was only a boy and I thought it was all very exciting – little did I know.” Do you remember? Email comment@thelatest.co.uk Defences littered the beaches and proms in Brighton and Hove where today workmen are giving the railings a lick of paint. Offenders working through Surrey & Sussex Probation Trust’s Community Payback scheme are toiling between the piers, going over the area painted last year to touch up rust spots caused by winter weather, and then work eastwards from the Sea Life Centre towards Kemp Town. was absolutely delighted to hear last week that the number of young homeless people in the city has fallen by a massive 79 per cent in the last four years. This is largely as a result of some excellent ‘early intervention’ work which council officers are doing to help prevent family breakdown, such as opening a new supported housing project for teen mothers and tackling the underlying causes of youth homelessness – mental illness, drugs and alcohol dependency. This difficult, and often unseen, work is now starting to pay real dividends.
carried out by hoteliers last year and fill in any gaps. The operation will involve 88 people, including council staff, working for 748 hours. It's good to see those with a debt to society paying the price. Brighton & Hove’s Primary Languages and International Project has been granted the Inspire Mark by LOCOG, recognising innovative projects inspired by 2012, which promote the Olympic values of cooperation, international friendship and understanding.
Schools throughout the city are involed. Fairlight Primary School, for example, is focusing on Uruguay. Albion's Uruguayan manager Gus Poyet has visited the school and answered pupils’ questions about his home country, as well as about football. Coombe Road Primary School has sent a basket of English objects for pupils in Madagascar. Who says the Olympics are just about sport? Do you remember the closing of Brighton beach in 1940?

As Chairman of the Brighton District Nursing Association Trust I would like to draw Latest 7 readers’ attention to a community grants scheme we are currently operating which runs up until 19 July. If you are a community group, a local charity or an individual who provides services that relieve suffering, or aid recovery, for the sick and needy of Brighton and Hove, you can apply for a grant (usually between £2,000 and £10,000) to support your work. In the past we have supported many new and ground breaking city organisations and we are keen to expand on this work. To apply, send details of the amount you require, what it will be spent on, and why the project qualifies, together with full details of who the applicant is (including your accounts if you are a charity or not for profit) to 148 Balfour Road, Brighton BN1 6NE or by email to fieldmouse@ fastnet.co.uk by 19 July 2010. Providing decent housing for Rev. Henry Wagner young people and families in the city is an issue which is really close to my heart and so this is really encouraging news, particularly at a time when the effects of the recession are hitting hard. On the subject of young people, I had the pleasure of once again seeing the Brighton Youth Orchestra perform at the weekend for their end of term concert. I try and catch them whenever they play and I would recommend anyone going to see them. They truly are a fantastic advertisement for the young talent we have in this city. If we could bottle and sell their enthusiasm, commitment and flair we would be very rich indeed! Finally, I attended the unveiling of a Blue Plaque
memorial to one of Brighton and Hove’s lesser known, but nonetheless highly influential, sons – the Rev. Henry Wagner. He was vicar of Brighton way back in 1824, right up until his death in 1870. But he left his mark on the city, which lasts to this day. During his period in office he had six churches built to enable the poor of Brighton to attend services, including two which still survive to this day – St. John the Evangelist and St. Paul's. The diversity of faith groups and churches in the city has increased significantly since his time, of course, but one thing has remained constant – the fantastic (and often unheralded) charitable work they carry out with disadvantaged communities in the city. Long may it continue!

n one of the hottest weekends of the year so far, Brighton and Hove played host to Europe’s biggest free beach festival when Paddle Round the Pier hit town. Mingling with the Mayor in the Paddle Round the Pier VIP tent was king of comedy (and star of my favourite Little Britain sketch) Ronnie Corbett, who had come not only to get behind the three wonderful charities – the RNLI, SurfAid International and Whoopsadaisy – but also to support his daughter, Sophie Graeme, who was hosting the celeb area. Fans of Ronnie C (and which one of us isn’t?) can look forward to seeing him in the forthcoming John Landis film, Burke And Hare, a black comedy based on the Edinburgh serial murders of the same name and co-starring Reece Shearsmith, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Andy Serkis, Isla Fisher, Tim Curry and John Cleese. Over 40,000 people from around the globe took to Hove Lawns last weekend and organisers are confident that the total will exceed the £30,000 raised in 2009.
LOCAL ARTIST’S FATBOY ART AUCTIONED ALONGSIDE WARHOL On the same day that Christie's the auctioneers sold a Picasso for £34.7 milion, Brighton artist JulieAnne Gilburt saw three of her own artworks go under the hammer. The pieces, all part of the original artwork from Fatboy Slim's multiaward winning Greatest Hits album, were sold for £10,000 as part of the auctions house's Pop Culture sale of Rock and Pop Memorabilia. When asked, Julie-Anne commented that she couldn’t quite believe her “funny little pieces” were on sale alongside Andy Warhol’s work at one of the world’s most prestigious auction houses.

Phil Gallagher from Cbeebies’ Mister Maker was at the recent Brighton Baby Expo at Brighton Racecourse. A firm favourite of children everywhere, the lovely, arty fellow commanded huge crowds at the parenting show and made a lot of little girls and boys very happy. The show, which was attended by over 4500 visitors, also played host to the Dragon's Den team who were filming for the next series.

the dark, people find it really alienating. So we decided to take the shows directly to the punters. During the mid ‘90s we toured Europe in a van and just pitched up wherever we felt welcome (which wasn’t in many places!) We were performing our own piece, Oil Well That Ends Well, which mixed excerpts from the Shakespeare problem play with polemic about the USA’s foreign policy. It went down really well actually, and El Periódico de Catalunya gave us a really good review. Actually, when we translated it later it turned out to be a review of something else entirely, but it was a real shot in the arm at the time. We felt there was no more success we could have in Europe, so in 1997 we decided to return to our native soil. Everyone seemed to be doing site-specific stuff, and I know a bandwagon when I see one, so I climbed aboard it. Now, some say “Site-specific theatre isn’t theatre at all, it’s just an art instillation that values spectacle over catharsis in a form which – while seeming to embrace egalitarian principals – is in fact profoundly anti-democratic, discriminating against the elderly, short, infirm,

’m principal director with Arbeit Macht Frei. We’re a Brightonbased company, formed in 1991. We started out as a physical theatre troupe – with the hit shows People In Whiteface Makeup And Bowler Hats (1991) and People In Whiteface Makeup And Bowler Hats 2 (1992), but we quickly grew bored with the constraints of regular theatre. I think people get really put off by theatre, the whole experience – walking in through the foyer, buying a light ale at the bar, sitting on a plush velvet seat in
partially-sighted and hard-ofhearing; its limited audience capacity ensuring an exclusive (rather than inclusive) experience that appeals so strongly to critics as they are generally the only people who can get a ticket”. But I think they’re just splitting hairs. What’s good about site-specific theatre is that if you find a really atmospheric old abandoned building, then half the work’s done already. All you have to do is nail a few skulls and neon signs to the walls, and get an old actor dressed in rags to halflearn a few speeches from Ibsen that he can do at the end of a corridor, and five stars all round! That’s why most of our recent productions have been in derelict shops, warehouses, and offices. We did Burger King Lear in the old cinema at the back of Burger King on North Street, Miss Julie in the kitchens of the Fredellen just before it was refurbished as the Neo (it was a real sell-out success – we got full capacity: eight people for every performance) and Oedipus At Colonus in the old Spud-U-Like on West Street. Our next piece of site-specific theatre is due to take place actually on a site – a building site. It’s very exciting. We’ll be performing Lady Windermere’s Fan while the construction work is happening around us. Ironically, the building being erected will be a theatre. We’re planning it so that, as the last line of the play is spoken, the last brick will be laid. If that doesn’t get us a glowing review from Michael Billington I don’t know what will! When the Arts Council is disbanded in about three months time, as it inevitably will be, partly for having wasted so much money on bilge like ours, I’m pretty sure I’ll be out of a job. But that’s okay – I’ll get work as a dramaturg, as nobody in theatre knows what that entails, yet they’re all told they’ve got to have one."

What we used to say An occasional series in which we struggle to remember the original, simple terms that have been abandoned in favour of ghastly, managerial Americanisms. WHAT WE SAY NOW: “Ring fence” Pointless USA term recently imported by politicians, who want to make it seem like they have something new to say, meaning to secure or bulwark – made even more ludicrous by the fact that the British don't even literally ring fence things, never mind figuratively: "We must ring fence the budget on the NHS." Arians need to watch their backs this week as there are evil spirits out there trying to undermine your confidence. See, they are even channeling wicked thoughts through me! How rude. Taureans are equally vulnerable from the forces of badness at this time and should take precautions. I find that garlic works, perhaps best when eaten in very large quantities. Gemini, so often oblivious to bad things, will find it hard to avoid the bad seeds being sown. I wish I could be more positive but they seem to be getting a firm grip of me this week.

Cancer should stay at home, lock the doors, draw a pentacle on the floor in chicken blood and refuse to answer the telephone. That includes mobiles, Skype and texting. Be strong. Leo will be brave in this oncoming storm of evil. But bravery may not be enough. Be wise, never leave home without an umbrella and a crucifix. Silver bullets are hard to find. Virgos should be aware that dressing in white can look virginal – but it can also look wraith-like. Avoid any confusion by dressing like a tart and blending in with the crowd.
Libras might feel the need to negotiate with the dark side. Forget it, the force is just too strong and you will get more than your fingers burnt. Better to stay safe and pray. Scorpio may already be in league with the devil. If this is the case than all my efforts to help you will be to no avail. I will keep you in my prayers and beg for your redemption. Sagis are way down the list when it comes to the attentions of the dark one. Lucky you, he is interested in younger conquests, preferably ones with all their own teeth.
Capricorn can operate as a double agent, flipping from good to evil at the drop of a hat. But be careful who you cross, who you trust and who you share a bed with this week. Aquarians love the idea of embracing all the earthly and heavenly forces and combining them to form a greater good. You silly fools, you really do not know quite what you are dealing with do you. Pisceans can avoid the works of the devil and his evil acolytes this week by seeking sanctuary at Bardsley’s where Roy has created a batter that will ward off all evil spirits.

L7 INTERVIEW 03 11
WILL POWER Lost siblings, rich sexuality and infinite compassion: actor Simon Callow talks to Bella Todd about the real William Shakespeare
Shakespeare: The Man From Stratford follows the success of your one-man show about Charles Dickens. You’ve written that it is Shakespeare’s treatment of sex and love that elevates him above Dickens... I think it’s what you don’t find in Dickens. Of course, Dickens is always interesting, even in what he doesn’t do. But with Shakespeare you have this astonishing garden of delights – and, of course, of disgust sometimes. Whether Dickens would allow himself to be really overwhelmed by another human being I doubt. He was too frightened of the black waters inside himself to let that happen. What sense of Shakespeare the man do you get from playing his characters? Shakespeare is very short on judgement and very high on compassion and a sense of identification. He becomes what he writes about, who he writes about, and he seems to know all and to forgive all. (You have exactly the opposite with his contemporary Ben Jonson who, although he seems to know everything, seems to despise everyone.) With Shakespeare you have this tremendously strong feeling of a man who was open to everything. It’s almost impossible to imagine how he survived as long as he did. If you’re that sensitive, if you’re so lacking in an extra skin that every emotion kind of pierces you, then you’re very vulnerable I would think. There’s this engraving for the First Folio where Shakespeare’s got heavy bags under his eyes, is going obviously prematurely bald, not smiling at all. He looks absolutely exhausted. And I do think Shakespeare must have been exhausted all of the time. When someone’s writing feels so miraculous to you, is it hard to think about them as a real person? Well yeeeees... except we don’t none of us know much about his personal life. But there’s a lot that we can think about, and that’s partly what the show’s about. We know that Shakespeare’s mother lost several children before he was born. Although
“With Shakespeare you have this sense of a man who was open to everything... He must have been exhausted” infant mortality was a great deal higher than it is now, a mother still mourns. Can we conclude that Shakespeare felt the need to make it up to his mother? To be especially attentive to her? To divert her with stories and tales? Is that the source? Well, I don’t know. But it could be! It’s an interesting thought. Does it matter to you as an actor who Shakespeare was biographically? If I’m acting in a play I feel that I’m in contact with the author. I can’t do a play without feeling that. You need to get a sense of their world. What their obsessions were, what they responded to especially, what territory is theirs and theirs alone... You must know a lot of living writers. Do their characters tend to correspond to their words, or have you ever been really shocked by meeting someone whose writing you know well? Well. Yes. Exactly. Of course that happens, and has happened. But you never know with people, you catch them on the wrong day. Or take Richard Wagner – a very well known case of someone whose music is in some cases absolutely sublime, the most rapturous music ever written, and he was a s***, you know. He was an entirely self-orientated s***, and ruthlessly exploitative. On the other hand, you could perfectly well make a case that he did that to protect his music and protect himself from invasion by other people. It’s unreasonable to expect extraordinary people to behave like everybody else.
Have you encountered any interesting instances or explorations of homosexuality in Shakespeare? There are a couple of characters who are obviously, explicitly gay, which is Achilles and Patroclus in Troilus And Cressida. Antonio the sea captain in Twelfth Night seems to be desperately in love with Sebastian. Of course the sonnets are full of a passionate avowal of love of the author for a young man. The degree to which they were actually sexually fulfilled relationships, or consummated relationships, is really hard to say because it is undoubtedly true that there was a much greater level of freedom and intensity between men in Elizabethan England, in the same way there was among young Arabs because they were kept away from women. The whole language and body language is so intense, fondling each other, stroking each other. Our tendency is to talk about everything and shine a bright light on everything. Many previous generations have preferred to turn a blind eye and let certain things happen under a sort of veil of, whatever – friendship – and let them get on with it. How close do you think Shakespeare In Love came to portraying the real Shakespeare? I think Jo [Fiennes] was fantastic but I don’t think he was exactly Shakespeare as I imagined him. I think he was probably far too good looking apart from anything else. But I believed that he was a writer, and that was wonderful. You’ve spoken about always being asked to play what you call ‘life and death of the party characters’ on film. Do you think Shakespeare was a life and death of the party character? No. N-n-no. No, Shakespeare’s the guy who sat in the corner of the room, nursing a bottle of wine, and listening and listening, and watching. And then went home with the most attractive person in the room Shakespeare: The Man From Stratford is at Theatre Royal Brighton from Monday 13-Saturday 19 July, 08448 717 650, www.ambassadortickets.com/Brighton,

ANDREW KAY’S FOOD & DRINK 13
Food & Drink Andrew Kay heads to Lewes and a fine dining experience at one9seven
Numbers up M
r L has formed a rather strong bond with Lewes since becoming an official opera buff and Glyndebourne member. I shouldn’t complain as I have been his guest already. One time we had a picnic, prepared by me, but on another occasion we made the mistake of not making plans and then taking pot luck. We ended up back in Brighton, not because nothing suited, but because we had not made a reservation. This year we will be more organised and top of our list will be the rather new one9seven. I like restaurants with numbers as names. I used to go to one in Battersea called 555 that was rather popular with Roddy Lewelin and the late Princess Margaret. I saw them there once, but I don’t think they spotted me, despite having met both of them before – separately I hasten to add.
“Mr L’s gooseberry and elderflower sundae was a knickerbocker-waggingly good wheeze that would put a smile on the face of the toughest critic”
Mr L moved on to a dish of Sussex lamb chop and shepherd’s pie. When it arrived it looked a tad dainty, by which I mean small. He thought so too but soon changed his mind when he tasted the rich pie made with slow braised shoulder and topped with the creamiest potato. The chop was perfect too, trimmed but not too far and cooked to exactly the right point. I could not resist the pig cheek braised in milk and honey. I like Bath chaps – stop tittering at the back – and when I see them on a menu I become blind to all else. The idea of braising them in milk and honey was fascinating. It was either going to be genius or misguided lunacy. I am pleased to say it was the former, a confident piece of cooking that was both bold and subtle. I also loved the radishes basted with butter and mustard. The Sussex baked beans were equally delicious and made what looked pretty actually rather robust and satisfying. Puddings were equally inspired and accomplished. My cherry stone milk jelly was very grown up indeed and I loved it. Mr L’s gooseberry and elderflower sundae was a knickerbocker-waggingly good wheeze that would put a smile on the face of the toughest critic. Add to all this fine food a menu that is so sensibly priced that it need not be a special occasion destination dinner but a casual supper, especially if you take advantage of their early evening deal that takes some beating. I wish, once again, that one9seven was closer to home, but then again I would become an even piggier pig than I already am, and that would never do. one9seven, 197 High Street, Lewes BN7 2NS, 01273 479713, www.one-9-seven.co.uk Which number-named restaurants do you rate? andrew@thelatest.co.uk follow me on twitter

Now open. Old management back for good. Open 12 noon - 11.30pm 7 days a week including Bank Holidays
Mr L joined me for a trip to one9seven as Mr R is deep into rehearsals for a play in Seaford. (It’s called Dead something, as all plays of this kind are.) Over in Lewes, one9seven is a big place but not densely packed. The new owners are taking their time deciding what to do with the décor and rightly so. I think they need to make it feel a little more intimate and far more ornate in keeping with the food that they serve – and what food. To be honest I had little idea what to expect; certainly the room does not give much away. It could have been tasty and piled high, but it turned out to be delicate and precise. Mr L started with a rather scary sounding prawn cocktail smoothie. The very idea! But actually it was a delight: smooth prawn mousse on a bed of lettuce jelly with crunchy tomato concassé. It was witty and tasty at the same time, and it made him smile the widest of smiles. I chose a beef paté with Harveys porter. I loved it, although I would have been happier latest 7 supports had it been called potted beef as this is what it was. A rich dark shin of beef braised in dark Harveys ale had been pressed into a neat slab from which dark slices had been carved. Had I been asked to identify it by sight alone I might have guessed that it was chocolate, so smooth and shiny was it. The accompanying bone marrow toasts and have you voted yet? capers raised the dish to starry heights. brightonfoodawards.com

KIDS’ FOOD REVIEWS 15
YUM YUM YUM Andrew Kay hands over his official knife, fork and pen to a bunch of kids who hit the town’s eateries and come back with their verdicts
Y
es, it’s true: they’re back, they’re bad, and they’re hungry. Well, they’re not so bad really. In truth, they do rather a fine job of this kid’s food review section year on year, and it gives both my feet and my waistband a bit of a rest too. Over the years this has become one of our most popular annual features and it always surprises us. For starters – forgive the pun – very few kids are interested these days in children’s menus. That said, there are one or two places acknowledging this and coming up with kids’ menus that are both approachable and inspired – as opposed to your typical sausage, fish finger and beans route. Kids’ tastes are becoming more and more sophisticated year on year. When we first did this we struggled to find kids who wanted to go out for anything exotic. Now we have them fighting for sushi and sashimi and keen on a hot curry. The biggest surprise was the number of children we asked who were keen to eat meat. In the past we have seen a lot of kids who eat vegetarian or pescatarian, but there were whoops of joy when I sent out invitations to visit a steak grill or a restaurant famous for serving great game dishes. Ages ranged form seven to seventeen with all points between. This year we have Indian and Japanese restaurants; British and Italian; formal and relaxed. And once again there are strong opinions, as they say – out of the mouths of babes. Well, into the mouths of the babes went the food and out came the following. I hope that you enjoy them as much as we have, and that you find them a useful guide as to where your children might enjoy a meal that will keep you grown ups as happy as the grown downs.

Dad couldn't come as he had been to the dentist so there were three of us plus Mum. The first bonus was that Mum could park really close by. The building is old-fashioned looking, but in a good way. It was our first visit and we thought it was great. Inside is very welcoming, cosy with nooks and crannies, and each table is quite private. We went on a Tuesday and it was busy with mostly families, but it wasn't noisy at all. The waiters were very friendly and looked after us well. We ordered drinks and they brought us poppadoms and chutneys. We love Indian food but normally have takeaway. Mum wanted dishes we hadn't tried before. But we wanted ones we knew we would like. For starters we ordered onion bhajee and Mum ordered king prawn puri. The bhajees were delicious – crispy and tangy. I don’t think Mum actually knew what a king prawn puri was but she seemed to like it (it was an Indian pancake and was really nice and fresh tasting). For our main we ordered two dishes and one side dish, plus three pilau rice and naan bread. We always have chicken korma, so we had to order that. We also ordered a king prawn curry and bombay potatoes. We shared everything and it was all hot, fresh, spicy and delicious. That was lucky because the friendly waiters kept popping up to ask if we were happy (yes), if we liked the food (yes), and if we needed anything else (generally no). Lots of people were having sizzling Tandoori dishes and we would definitely have that next time. The portions are huge and it was a good idea to share. We couldn't finish it all, so our waiter gave it to us in takeaway boxes! They had a long list of desserts which all sounded tasty, including plastic toys filled with ice cream called Punky. We found a pudding-shaped hole and ordered these! We will definitely go back to the Elizabethan Tandoori with friends and family. It is so different to the usual places to eat out in town. When I arrived, I was shown straight to my table and given a menu. The waiter introduced himself as Ed – he gave a warm and friendly service, and told us about the children’s offer on the adults’ menu: any pizza or pasta for £3.50. The children’s menu was very well laid out, the writing was very big and easy to read. On the back there was colouring and the waiter had a pot of crayons, which gives children something to do while they were waiting for their food. The place has a very good and friendly atmosphere. The décor through-out is clean, bright and modern. It was a very hot day, so it was a welcome break that they had air conditioning. Even though the downstairs is quite small, the layout works well and it feels quite spacious. We ordered cold drinks which arrived promptly. Shortly after, we browsed the menu and ordered. I decided to try tagliatelle alla carbonara and Dad chose the quattro formaggi pizza. These were both reasonably priced at £5.25 each on the adult menu. It didn’t take long for the food to arrive, which is good for families, particularly those with small children who get bored easily. The main course I ate was very nice but was a very big portion, so I didn’t manage to eat it all. What I did eat of it tasted lovely; it was just right, with just enough cream and the bacon. My dad said that his pizza was cooked well with a nice thin base. The dessert I chose was called Minty: it was mint choc chip and chocolate ice cream, cream and chocolate sauce. I loved this dessert because of its name; it is so simple but fun. The mint flavour of the desert was not too rich or sickly and was nice to eat after having a main course. It’s location in the North Lanes, warm and friendly service combined with its good prices and good quality food makes this a popular place to eat. I will definitely go back there again. I hadn’t taken my daughters to a Japanese restaurant before, so they were excited about going. We were greeted by a very helpful Michaela and were shown to a great table right by the sushi conveyor belt, much to the girls’ amusement and curiosity. Inevitably the questions began: “What’s that one?...what’s that one...?” It could have gone on for hours but Michaela brought us a selection of amazing fresh juice blended creations which diverted their attention. And the taste fest began. Firstly, we tried a fantastic sushi and sashimi platter. For those not accustomed to Japanese food (or those wee ones who haven’t tried it yet) sushi generally comes in two forms – maki is a filling, often seafood or vegetable, wrapped in sticky rice wrapped in nori seaweed; nigiri is a ball of sticky rice with a sliver of raw fish or seafood on top. Sashimi is simply thin slices of raw fish. They are all traditionally eaten with pink ginger, soy dipping sauce and wasabi, a paste made from Japanese horseradish. Tilly wolfed everything with eager eyes – Tabitha stuck to the maki, especially liking the soy dipping experience. Both bravely tried wasabi, but found it a little too hot for their pallet! I must mention the crash course in chopstick technique that all uninitiated in Japanese cuisine must undergo. The girls tried valiantly, with quite a bit of success – but rule number one: if all else fails and you’re really hungry, use your fingers! Next a selection of side orders: crispy gyoza pork dumplings, Yakitori chicken skewers, and vegetable and fish tempura. Tilly inhaled the former and Tabitha demolished the latter. To finish, we had a dessert from the conveyor belt: Mochi rice cakes with sweet adzuki bean filling – unlike anything the girls had tried before, they devoured it regardless. I was really pleased that my sometimes picky daughters had tried a world of new flavours and enjoyed it immensely. Sevendials First impressions as we walked in was that it looked rather posh and grown-up. Then we were shown outside onto the terrace which was nice because it was such a hot day and it was more relaxed. We were shown the children’s menu but it was slightly too basic for our tastes, so we chose from the a la carte menu. At first we both wanted the same thing: the pan-fried rib eye steak, proper chips, slow roasted tomato, wild garlic sauce roquette salad and red wine sauce – but then I saw the Sussex lamb with roast garlic mash, provencal courgette and purple basil, and I decided to have that – as long as I could have the proper chips too as they looked really tasty. The waiters and waitresses were really nice. They brought drinks, bread and then tiny espresso cups of chilled gazpacho – which was really delicious. The food came quite quickly. My mum had “something light”: the organic salmon on crushed Jersey royal potatoes, English asparagus and sauce vierge, which looked really yummy. We all tasted eachother’s food and everyone liked it all. Rae gave her roquette salad to Mum but the plates were all clean by the end. We all thoroughly enjoyed our main courses. It was really delicious. Even the courgettes were surprisingly good. Then we ordered the dessert. We both ordered the sticky toffee pudding. It was light and rich with a lovely creamy vanilla ice cream. Mum had a little room for lemon posset, but Rae finished it off as she loves all puddings. It was a real treat. Our food and drinks came to about £25 each but there was a menu of the day which had a starter and main course for just £10. We had a brilliant lunch. I wish we did that more often. Pho As a creature of habit, I had never tried Vietnamese food and had no idea what to expect. Fortunately, I wasn’t disappointed. Healthy, fresh and low in fat, Pho offers the perfect summer menu. To start, Uncle Andrew and I shared both spring and summer rolls, and a light but sumptuous mango and pork salad. I tried Vietnam’s national dish, the delicious Pho noodle soup with chicken. Uncle Andrew, who has been many times now and is already a fan, had the prawn curry which he loved. The atmosphere was vibrant, the restaurant quickly filling up from the moment we arrived: a clear sign that Brighton is hooked on Pho’s great value, low fat yet gratifying grub. My evening finished on a high with banana fritters, the perfect partner to honey and ginger ice cream – a dessert so good, it has to be bad! Dining out at Pho has been a wonderful surprise, introducing me to a new culture through a restaurant I will definitely be returning to. Terre à Terre Andrew Kay, the food reviewer for Latest 7, was struggling to find someone to review Terre à Terre because it is a vegetarian restaurant. Apparently, all the children he approached wanted to eat meat. So it was with trepidation that I agreed, as I, too, prefer meat or fish to vegetables. I’m glad to say, I enjoyed my meal tremendously. The food was nothing like the vegetables I have at home. It was beautiful to look at, the combination of ingredients was innovative and exciting, and there were loads of spices and flavours that kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. We ordered something from the kids’ menu and something from the adults’ menu because I wanted to taste both. We had parmesan-coated olives filled with fresh ricotta cheese to start, along with garlic focaccia. I’ve lived in Italy for a few years of my life, and these were as good as anything I’ve had there. I also had the kids’ smoothie, which was so tasty you could taste every single fruit in it. For the main course, we chose the Terre à Tapas, which is for two people to share. I’d been told that this is the best thing on the menu, because it gives you a tour of the whole menu in small tapas-sized dishes. I especially liked the corn cakes with avocado. I also liked the fritters with pastry in between, which were neither too spicy nor bland. There was halloumi, noodles, and perfect salad leaves dressed exquisitely. I was excited when the platter arrived and I tried a bit of everything first of all; I then went back to each food and finished it. I could not believe I could eat so many vegetables! It was to share but my mum had very little. The only flavour I thought was slightly clashing with everything else was the Indian dips. I ordered the cheesecake for dessert. It was great – very cheesy and filling. I loved the sambuca raisins spread with sugar – I think it was the first time I have had them. I had a memorable eating experience at Terre à Terre and I hope I’ll go again soon. Benjamin Röhl (11) Terre à Terre, 1 East Street, Brighton, BN1 1HQ, 01273 729051

Picasso’s This is a family-run Italian restaurant – or ristorante as they say in Italy. It is quite small downstairs but has an upstairs too. And people were sitting outside too, drinking wine. We went on a Sunday evening and even though we arrived a bit late it was very welcoming with a great atmosphere. Picasso’s is n proper Italian restaurant with red checked tablecloths covered in paper and real Italian waiters who say “Prego”, “Buon Appetito” and “Grazia” and talk quickly to one another in Italian. We even saw them making a huge fuss of a baby. There was very lively music, all in Italian though we could recognise the tunes of some of the songs like ‘Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini’. There was a variety of other people when we were there. The service was great because it was fast and friendly. We were given menus as soon as we sat down and ordered drinks first which came straight away. For starters we shared calamari fritti between the three of us and it was delicious. For our main course we chose from the main menu. There is a special kids’ menu during the day but in the evening kids can order smaller portions off the main menu. We both chose small margarita pizzas and Mum ordered lasagne. We also had a side order of French fries just to try. The ‘small’ pizzas were giant, thin, crispy, gooey and very delicious. We just couldn't finish them so we were given the leftovers to take home. Mum managed all of her lasagne which wasn't too huge. The French fries were quite unusual: they were round like thin roast potatoes, but they tasted great. Perhaps Italian French fries are always round? There were lots of pudding choices on the blackboard, including profiteroles and different ice creams. We shared a vanilla and strawberry Panda ice cream, which came with strawberries and cream. We had a great time. The food was amazing and when we left the waiters all said “Ciao Bella” which made us feel good. Esther Jackson (12) Picasso's, 41 Market Street, Brighton, BN1 1HH, 01273 748801
Foxy’s Roast & Grill 14-year-old boys are generally not fussed about vegetables, particularly the green variety. So, I was very pleased to be asked to check out Foxy’s, a grill/restaurant just down from Hove train station. It’s a small, but intimate place – indoors the only seating is at the long bar, but there are a few tables outside on the pavement. If you are sitting at the bar service is very much like being in a bar or pub. The menu is concise and not too busy, it’s largely an American style menu, offering a range of meat based dishes: burgers, steaks, ribs, chicken and the like, plus a couple of fish dishes, brunches and light lunches and salads. There are no starters which suited us fine, although of course you could just order a side dish if that's all you wanted. Dad ordered the gourmet burger which came in ciabatta, with red onion jam and the ‘works’. Too big too handle he had to resort to a knife and fork. His mouth is not that big! He also ordered side dishes of confit potatoes, which are roasted in the drip pan along with onions and garlic, and coleslaw. Very tasty and filling. I’m a big steak fan although it took me some time to work out the system of measurements. Basically, you order either fillet, sirloin or rump (t-bone is also available at a whooping 18ozs) with prices given per 100 grammes. My Dad had to do some mental calculation (he's a pounds and inches throwback) before we hit upon 300 grammes of sirloin. One of the features of Foxy's is that the chef/waiter will produce a large piece of steak on a board and you decide how big you want it. You actually get to see it before its cooked, which is also done before your eyes. I ordered it medium rare and that's exactly what I got - a nice bit of pink flesh inside, very succulent. I also had confit potatoes plus garlic mushrooms Drinks wise Foxy's has a decent selection of beers, wines, spirits, soft drinks, and hot drinks. A good move, particularly in hot weather, is for the glasses to be chilled before the drinks are poured. Refreshing oustide and inside! All in all a great place for older kids and grown ups to indulge their passion for meat in an unfussy, relaxed and informal atmosphere. There's also plenty of non-meat dishes, but not too many greens! Luke Hemmings (14) Foxy’s Roast & Grill, 90 Goldstone Villas Hove, BN3 3RU 01273 776 661

KIDS’ FOOD REVIEWS
Oki Nami I love this place. This was our first visit and we will definitely be back. We have been to other Japanese restaurants and we love sushi but we wanted to try out the new kids’ menu here and see if we would be able to bring our young cousins when they visit. This restaurant is calm, peaceful and airy. The staff are really welcoming and friendly. The kids’ menu has three options which are all homemade, freerange, freshly prepared and healthy: chicken yakitori (skewers of chickeni with teriyaki sauce), sakana ten (goujons of white fish in a light crispy batter) and tofu teriyaki (lightly fried organic wedges of tofu with teriyaki sauce). All three come with sticky Japanese rice and stemed vegetables. All of them are £3.95 and and include a drink. The chicken yakatori was tender and sticky; we were glad to have finger bowls. The fish was fluffy on the inside and crunchy on the outside and came with with a tangy soy and ginger dipping sauce. Both of these were absolutely gorgeous and would both have been our favourite, until we tasted the tofu. I do not know how but their tofu is light and crispy and unbelievably tasty. The rice was sticky and delicious and the vegetables were perfectly cruchy. The owner, Mike, was there and he came and talked to us. He was friendly and funny and talked to us about healthy food in a nonboring way, including healthy treats. The interior is modern and airy with big windows, a long bar and a spiral staircase. There was origami hanging from the ceiling like bunting and we were admiring this when we realised that our chopsticks were wrapped in origami paper with printed instructions. After a bit of confusion when we all tried to help each other, we realised we were all making different things! We ended up with a boat, a bird, and – after quite a lot of help from the waitress – a rabbit! We would definitely bring younger kids here, even much younger ones. But teenagers and adults will like it too. Natalie Clark (12) Oki-Nami, 6 New Road, Brighton, East Sussex BN1 1UF, 01273 773777
Sam’s Of Brighton We went to the restaurant on the afternoon of the Men’s Singles Final at Wimbledon. Dad managed to park right outside the restaurant which made mum very happy. Inside we were shown to our table by our waitress Fuz!!! The restaurant was much bigger inside than it looked from the outside. We were having a late lunch at 2pm but the restaurant seemed quite busy. Fuz brought us the menus to choose our lunches and asked what we would like to drink. She also gave Kit pencils and paper to draw with. It seemed quite grown up and I liked how the menus were displayed on the walls in large white picture frames. Mum really liked the wall of family photos that were all in black and white – her favourite. Dad told us that Sam’s used to be owned by a famous actor ‘and that not a lot of people know that’. We ordered our food and drinks and really enjoyed the basket of bread we were given whilst we waited for our food. Kit chose the Sunday roast from the children’s menu with bread sticks to start, I had roast pork from the a la carte menu and enjoyed ‘real chips’ for my starter. Dad had the adults roast beef and butternut squash soup to start, mum had courgette and feta tartlet with new potatoes and the shellfish risotto to start. The waitress was nice and checked with us that we had everything we needed. When we had our starters I tried one of mums tiger prawns which was really nice. We all tucked into my real chips and Kit ate far too much of the delicious bread. Our main courses then arrived. My roast pork was very nice especially the roast potatoes, however Dad’s roast beef was even nicer so for the purpose of the ‘review’ we had to share. Kit gave his mark of approval by clearing his plate. Mum said her meal was very tasty and filling. After a short break we then got to look at the dessert menu. Fuz suggested Kit and I should have the magic ice cream with its special ingredient, magic star dust, which was awesome. Dad had the passion fruit cheese cake which must have tasted good – he kept it to himself, and we all had a taste of mum’s chocolate Amaretto fudge pot which was really nice. We all agreed it was a lovely Sunday lunch and headed home to watch Wimbledon which dad had recorded for us. I
magine getting the results of liposuction without the surgery: no pain, no needles, no down time and instant results. They say success doesn’t come easily, but with this inch-busting treatment, I beg to differ! Laser lipo, branded by some (with good reason) as ‘lazy lipo’ is a non-invasive inch-loss treatment with immediate results. This fat-melting laser system is a safe, painless and fast treatment for body contouring and has recently been featured on Supersize Vs Superskinny as a fat reduction measure that works. It has also been dubbed as “Best for Mummy Tummies” by Red magazine and “The Love Handle Liquidator” in Hello magazine. So, how does it work? Well, laser lipo by Lapex BCS is a revolutionary medical device for spot laser fat reduction. It is the Class 2 3B Hazard Cold Red Laser which makes it possible to achieve fantastic results without any risks: no swelling, no pain, no bruising, no down time – yet the results are instant. Revitalise offer laser lipo trials for just £50. During your 60-minute appointment you will receive a full consultation including the completion of a medical questionnaire. You then need to choose the area you would like to have worked on – the most popular are tummies, thighs, hips, and the backs of the arms – yes, the dreaded ‘bingo wings’! The targeted fatty area of your choice will then be accurately measured. Two large Diode Laser paddles are placed on the targeted fatty areas and secured with straps. Then two smaller Probe Lasers are placed over the appropriate lymphatic glands and held in place. The Laser Lipo BCS will then be switched on for 10 minutes, re-located and turned on for another 10 minutes; this will be repeated one more time for a maximum of 30 minutes. The treated area will then be re-measured to assess the inch-loss achieved. You can expect to see a total reduction of between 0.5 and 3 inches (1.25 and 8cm) after your first treatment. It really is that instant. In order to increase the body’s ability to remove the Triglycerides (the broken down fat cells), it is necessary to assist this natural process by increasing the metabolic rate. 30 minutes of any moderate exercise on the day of the treatment would do the job. However, for maximum benefit, Power Plates are branded as the most effective way to fast-track the elimination of the liquified fat from laser treatment as the vibrations of the plates stimulate the lymphatic system at a high frequency. Whats more, Power Plate classes are extremely enjoyable. The majority of clients continue doing them on a regular basis to maintain their shape and tone as well as for general fitness. For best results, a course of two laser lipo treatments a week for four weeks is recommended. An individual treatment is £150; a course of four is £550 (save £50); and a course of eight is £950 (save £250). Sarah, from Sussex, completed the course and was delighted with the results: “Losing a total of 8 inches from my stomach has made me feel so much better in myself and reminded me that it is possible to look great over 40!” Revitalise special offer: anyone who signs up for a course of laser lipo sessions following a £50 trial receives a free Power Plate class with every laser lipo treatment. And as with any magical fix, you would need to eat a balanced diet and exercise weekly in order to Clare Brown of wellbeing centre prevent the fat from building up again. Revitalise on the classes and If you would like to apply for your treatments that introductory £50 session (which is will leave you a saving of £100), then contact looking and Revitalise on 01273 738389 or feeling great. email health@revitalise-u.com. Mussolini: A One Man Political Farce
Award-winning performer George Dillon is part of a stunning season of Edinburgh previews at The Nightingale Theatre with The Man Who Was Hamlet, writes Andrew Kay
W
ho really wrote Hamlet? Award-winning performer George Dillon returns to The Nightingale with his new play, The Man Who Was Hamlet, which tells the comical, tragical, romantic and utterly scandalous history of Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford, the leading alternative candidate for the authorship of the works of William Shakespeare. Dillon proposes that, “The fairy-tale story of the man from Stratford – an unschooled glove-maker’s son who left his wife to find wealth and fame as a playwright in London – is widely believed... but there is actually very little evidence for any of it.” But who was Edward de Vere, the man Dillon suggest is the real bard? “Well a brilliant but disgraceful aristocrat whose life and character strikingly echo Shakespeare’s most famous character. Edward de Vere was a courtier, swordsman, adventurer and poet, who was hailed as the best of the secret court writers, especially for his comedies. But no plays have survived bearing de Vere’s name and his poetry suddenly stopped after the first invention of ‘William Shake-speare’.” So was de Vere the inspiration and role model for Hamlet... or was he really the author? In Dillon’s seventh solo show, directed by Denise Evans with music by Charlotte Glasson, the dying Dane’s last words summon the ghost of Edward de Vere to tell his own story, restore his wounded name and triumph over time. Since Stunning the Punters in 1990, George Dillon has created several compelling one man shows which have toured extensively in the UK and abroad. This year will be his fourteenth appearance on the Edinburgh Fringe and The Nightingale dates are a chance to see the new work in advance of that. He won a Herald ‘Angel’ Award in 2000 for his performance in Steven Berkoff’s Graft: Tales Of An Actor, and his last two Edinburgh shows were each nominated for The Stage’s Best Actor Award (Graft in 2000 and The Gospel of Matthew in 2003). 29-30 July, £8.50/7.50

MARTHA WAINWIGHT Last year Martha Wainwright and Hal Wilner teamed up to create a live recording of Edith Piaf songs, and now you can hear the live versions. Having grown up speaking French (her recently deceased mother Kate McGarrigle was a FrenchCanadian) both Piaf and Wainwright exude passion and a confessional intimacy when singing, and so this seems like a perfect match. Thursday 15 July, Concert Hall, Brighton Dome

SPEAR OF DESTINY Formed from the ashes of Theatre Of Hate, Spear Of Destiny are led by the energetic and brilliant front man, songwriter Kirk Brandon. Melodic power rock with plenty of punk influences is the order of the day, and with their reputation for a stunning live show it’s no wonder the band continue to enjoy a big fanbase to this day. This gig has been moved from The Engine Room due to its closure. Saturday 17 July, Prince Albert
LEGENDARY SHACK SHAKERS Offering a ferocious mix of rockabilly, punk rock, swamp blues and country, this amazing live band (led by one J.D. Wilkes) evoke a rural America in decline via a thundering rhythm section and and a hard-driving rock sound. Seventh album Agridustrial is just out, and once again it’s a hi-octane ride resplendent with melody. Monday 19 July, Komedia

FAMOUS FIVE
Brighton bands will be decamping to Suffolk this weekend to play their part in the fifth birthday celebrations of Latitude Festival
N
ow in its fifth year, the Latitude Festival has quickly grown to become one of the more interesting and important festivals on the calendar, embracing a highly eclectic ensemble of music, theatre, comedy, literature, film, poetry, dance, art, fashion and cabaret. Like a mini-Glastonbury (which was always a festival of the perfoming arts and not just music), Latitude’s depth of talent is quite startling, with this yeart’s music lineup taking in Tom Jones, Florence And The Machine, Vampire Weekend, The xx and The Horrors. BBC’s Huw Stephens is once again curating a BBC Introducing stage, where Brighton is represented in the form of ex-Pipette Rose Elinor Douglas. We thought we’d quiz two Brighton based artists about performing at this year’s bash... FELIX WHITE OF THE MACCABEES When you think of Latitude, what five words spring to mind? I’ve heard. It’s. Pretty. Good. If you could see only one performance at this year’s festival, what would it be? Very difficult question because The National, Richard Hawley, Wild Beasts, Grizzly Bear and Laura Marling are among our favourites anywhere. I’ll say The National because we haven’t seen them play the new album yet.
Do you have anything special planned for your performance? The plan is to not let ouselves down! Latitude is five years old – how did you celebrate your fifth birthday? I don’t remember but I imagine Latitude’s fifth will be more eventful... MICK OF MODERN TOSS When you think of Latitude, what five words spring to mind? Eclectic, energy, heat, alive, loud. If you could see only one performance at this year’s festival what would it be? Nigel Kennedy queuing for a falafel salad. What five essential items will you be taking? Hat, bog roll, Piriton, newspaper, sandwiches. Do you have anything special planned for your performance? Yeah, we’re going to turn it right up and stand outside watching what happens. Latitude is five years old – how did you celebrate your fifth birthday? Whenever we want to clebrate something we always go for a pizza near Brighton public library. Lattitude, Henham Park, Suffolk, 15-18 July. Sold Out
What five essential items will you be taking? Five amps. One of which will hopefully work...

FILM Get Him To The Greek (15)
filmhighlight
L7 Film
Dir: Nicholas Stoller
Comedy following rock god Aldous Snow (Russell Brand) and his hapless aid Aaron Greenberg (Jonah Hill) – who’s been tasked with escorting Snow to LA’s Greek Theatre for his gig. Sounds simple, right? Not quite so: with drug smuggling, brawls and lap dances, this is anything but... Showing at Cineworld and Odeon
Showing this week The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (12A) Dir: David Slade
Quick recap from New Moon: Bella loves Edward, the vampire with the cool hair, but he left, after which she became close to her friend Jacob, who turned out to be a werewolf. She’s got a knack, y’know. Will fur and tooth relations improve? Who’s killing folks in nearby Seattle? And which of the two men in her life will Bella choose? Showing at Cineworld and Odeon
Inception (15) Dir: Christopher Nolan
Predators (15) Dir: Nimrod Antal
Shrek Forever After 2D & 3D (U) Dir: Mike Mitchell
This time around, in another fairytale-centric story, the devious Rumpelstiltskin tricks Shrek into signing a contract that erases him from existence. No-one knows who Shrek is – he is a stranger to his wife Fiona, his BFF Donkey, and he’s a ‘wanted’ ogre in Far Far Away. Uh-oh. Showing at Cineworld, Odeon and Connaught
It’s back! Remember those scary killing aliens from the late ‘80s with an uncanny knack for camouflage? Here they are again, all souped up and on their home turf. Or so it seems to mercenary Adrien Brody’s Royce. We know! A heck of a departure from his usual roles, but a blazer of an actor. Anyway, Royce wakes up in hostile jungle terrain, with a collection of fellow abductees, all of which are also mercenaries in one form or another with the noticeably exception of Topher Grace’s disgraced doctor, Edwin. Before long the tough nut posse realise they are actually in a massive game reserve – and they’re the game! With hidden enemies out to get them, the group have to work out why they’ve specifically been selected. Can these fiercely independent individuals work together to survive? With Laurence Fishburne, Danny Trejo and Alice Braga co-starring as the fierce rabbits in the headlights. Showing at Odeon and Cineworld
Heartbreaker (15) Dir: Pascal Chaumeil
A French romantic comedy with bite, stars Romain Duris and Julie Ferrier as siblings who scrape a crust by splitting up couples who have lost thier zest.
27
Faced with a fast turnaround of a week, a particularly stubborn couple, and Duris’ growing attachment to their
latest target (Vanessa Paradis), things don’t go according to plan. Showing at Cineworld
Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Dom Cobb, a thief who can steal into your dreams and take your secrets. Both blessed and cursed with this gift, he’s offered redemption and a clean slate on the condition he complete one last job. Not to steal an idea but to plant one. And then it gets complicated. Pursued by an enemy that knows his movements before he does, he fights to survive. Showing at Duke of York’s
Leaving (Partir) (15) Dir: Catherine Corsini Suzanne (Kristen Scott Thomas) is a bored bourgeois housewife in the South of France who decides to go back to work. Her lovely hubbie Samuel (Yvan Attal) helps her by setting up a consulting room for her physiotherapy. Thing is, the builder commissioned with creating the studio (Sergi Lopez) has other ideas, and his pursuit of Suzanne explodes into violence and chaos. Pow! Showing at Duke Of York’s

S
trictly speaking, Terry Saunders is a stand-up comedian. And a storyteller. Oh, and an animator. And sometimes, as on this occasion, he uses his gifts from all three and brings them together into one night of story wordsmithing magic. To be fair, Six And A Half Loves is already a hugely successful YouTube series so he could’ve just left it there. Instead this man who has been up for three – count ’em – Chortle awards and won the gong for Innovation In Comedy is taking the popular animations in show form up to Edinburgh. He’s going to play the popular Pleasance Courtyard every afternoon for a fortnight. And he’s only got a couple more weeks before it starts, which means we’ve caught an Edinburgh preview in what should be a reasonably polished stage in its development. Six And A Half Loves promises a combination of storytelling and animation to tell of perfect couples that never quite reach their perfection. It’s a badly kept secret but a lot of comics are actually quite poetic at heart. Terry Saunders doubly so. Previously, Terry has held monthly storytelling shows at Upstairs At Three And Ten and they’ve been unmissable hilarity – an apparent ramshackle
structure that gives you hope you won’t have to go home for ages, ‘cos Terry can’t remember how to end it. Each show is brilliant, which is why it wasn’t surprising when he was named a Time Out Top 10 Comedian. Plus, he has his own Radio 4 show with Kevin McCloud – ‘Dad Designs’. Fresh ideas are Terry’s calling card, making this a real top tip. Thursday 16 July, 8pm, £7, Upstairs At Three And Ten follow me on twitter

DAVID GRAY Within the salubrious settings of the Dome Concert Hall, David Gray treated his loyal and at times raucous audience to a vintage performance. He may have limbs that jitter like a Thunderbird puppet having a seizure and uncontrollable head bobbing like Paula Radcliffe towards the end of a marathon, but you cannot deny he is a talent and a very undervalued one at that. It’s easy to forget the hits he has had over a career spanning nearly 20 years, all of which were covered to the delight of a jubilant audience. Gray is a class act, his musicianship first class. All in all this was a delightful concert and ably supported by the talented solo singersongwriter Ruarri Joseph. Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, 8 July JJJJJ Lee Stevens
This ultra-rare appearance by one of the titans of Latin Jazz was the perfect summer show. Following a moody modal intro, we were soon enjoying a percussion battle between the timbales and conga while the others signalled each other for solo slots. Each piece was underpinned by Eddie’s stabbing piano while building relentlessly to an explosive climax. A slower boogaloo/cha cha cha sounded like a sultry afternoon in Spanish Harlem and was followed by a selection of blazing salsa pieces for the many enthusiastic dancers. An encore was demanded and after an amazing conga solo the ensemble went headto-head for a roof-raising finale. Corn Exchange, 3 July JJJJJ Steve Clements
ROD PICOTT/AMANDA SHIRES WITH SUZI RAGSDALE Pic: Paul Toeman
QUARTET This gentle four hander was a quiet study of aging that held few surprises in content but certainly delivered on performance. Susannah York as diva Jean was simply marvelous. Icy cold, brittle and aloof, she stalked the stage like a praying mantis in search of kill. Gwen Taylor as the bumbling contralto Cecily was, as ever, immaculate in the role despite there being little meat for her to tuck into. Michael Jayston was suitably precious as Reggie the tenor but again had little to do. Timothy West had all the best lines, well almost all, and was perfectly cast as the over-sexed bass who was all talk. Sadly the performances were not matched by the script which simply pottered along. With such talent on the stage it seemed like a missed opportunity from Ronald Harwood with little of the insight, depth or high comedy that we saw in his great play The Dresser. Theatre Royal Brighton, 5 July JJJJJ Andrew Kay
These three Nashville-based artists continued the trend for intimate Americana evenings at the former Hanbury. A self-accompanied set of ‘surviving life’ narratives from Suzi ended with Amanda adding texture on violin. Rod and Amanda’s set of laidback front porch songs worked well with Amanda’s Texan twang voice and pizzicato fiddle the perfect compliment to Rod’s husky drawl and guitar. Highlights included the devilbaiting, fiddle-on-fire ‘Long Gone’, the soft-spoken square dance ‘Gun Shy Dog’ and two songs Rod wrote with childhood friend Slaid Cleaves. A fine evening of alt-country with old-time roots delivered by a true Southern belle and gentleman. Brighton Ballroom, 6 July JJJJJ Steve Clements
PADDLE ROUND THE PIER FESTIVAL Blazin' sunshine, a mild sea breeze and free entry to the biggest free watersports festival in Europe. What more could you want? Even if watersports is not your thing, there was an excellent programme of music held in the big top featuring many of Brighton's finest acts, including Baba Slips, Mean Poppa Lean, Transformer, The Half Sisters, Wide Eyed Order, Lucky Jim, Fat 45 and Los Albertos who, as usual, tore the roof off with their party ska craziness. It's all for charity, all the bands play for free, and an enormous amount of work is put into the event every year by a dedicated team of volunteers. Congratulations all round. Hove Lawns, 3-4 July JJJJJ Jeff Hemmings

PIANO MAN RUFUS WAINWRIGHT
Brighton Centre, 4 July JJJJJ
I
t’s almost six months now since Rufus Wainwright’s mother Kate McGarrigle died but the impact on the singer’s life and his work is still evident. His latest album is steeped in sorrow and so, too, was this Brighton Centre concert. He even took a moment to talk about that sorrow and how sharing that with his audience has helped him with his grief. But it was not all sorrow – his songs do come with a huge helping of sadness, but Wainwright himself comes with a great deal of wit and humour, and between songs it was there in spades. With only a piano and no band as on new album All Days Are Nights: Songs For Lulu, he ran through a fine selection of numbers, highlighting of course that new album, but also digging deeper into his back catalogue. You could have heard a pin drop as what must have been the most attentive and respectful audience sat, gripped by his accomplished piano playing and soaring voice. And what a voice; it has the quality of a finely made and well played cello, smooth, mellifluous and capable of quietness and extreme passion. His set included work from ... Lulu, his opera, old albums and newer work including one of his
settings of Shakespeare’s sonnets. And the audience lapped it up. He excused himself from singing one number that would be too demanding after his prior night out celebrating gay pride in London, but he did treat us to a song which he described as a work that is both the most difficult to sing and to play. He was twice joined by pianist Stephen Oremus, allowing him to stand and sing a selection of numbers form his Judy Garland repertoire. It was a popular departure that added some light to the shade as he sang classics like ‘The Trolley Song’ and ‘Zing Went The Strings Of My Heart’. Penultimately he sang ‘Walking Song’, from his mother and aunt’s second album. “It’s about my mum and dad” he said in his only reference to his father, Loudon. This was a moving performance but never mawkish, Wainwright proving that he is a creative force to be reckoned with and a performer who can hold an audience in rapt delight without the trappings of a huge production. Wainwright took the vast space of the Brighton Centre and gave a show of moving intimacy. Andrew Kay

The barefoot runner
Telly Talk
Joe Addison: Death Valley via the South Downs
With Victoria Nangle

k, concrete, we like concrete, smooth. Tarmac, yep we’ve done plenty of running on this, no problem. Bit of gravel, that’s ok as long as it doesn’t last too long. Grass, yummy, dessert for us! Keep it coming! Wait, what’s that? Ooh that hurts! Chalk and flint, you say? Don’t like that! Go back to the grass, please! That was how I imagined my feet felt during the Seaford half marathon last month. It was a beautiful 13.1 mile run from the seafront, up over the South Downs and finishing by the sea again. And for the most part, I really enjoyed the race, although there were several hills and it was quite warm and at one point there was a nasty mile long downhill that was chalk and flint – ouch! It made me appreciate the grass sections along the river Cuckmere all the more. I’ll definitely do this again next year, though, as Seaford Lions did a great job organising everything, including biscuits at the end and a lovely medal (I like my medals!). I did pick up a minor puncture but that’s all healed now. This was the first time I have done a “My ultimate ambition trail race and, aside from the nasty sharp is a 135 mile journey bit, it has convinced me that trail running through Death Valley in is the way I want to 49 degree heat, ending go. I plan on signing up for my first ultra in an 8000ft climb” race in December, a 30+ mile trek called the Doyen of the Joe and friends after completing Downs. My ultimate the Seaford half marathon running ambition is the Badwater race. A 135 mile journey through Death Valley, California in 49 degree heat, ending in an 8000ft climb up Mount Whitney. The race is one of the toughest in the world and each year at least a quarter of competitors don’t finish. If I can run this race before I die I’ll be happy. In the meantime, I’m trying to beat my 5k personal best at the moment, which is where Parkrun comes in handy. It’s a free weekly timed event in Hove park (Saturdays, 9am start), with other events around the country. At the moment I am the only barefoot runner at the Brighton event (which means I’m also the fastest!) but I have seen one or two runners in minimal shoes, which is good. It’s great fun, friendly, really well organised and no pressure to perform, just register online beforehand and turn up and run (or walk). Every week there are usually about 200 people ranging from the super fast to people that aren’t worried by time (I’m somewhere inbetween). And if you see me, feel free to say hi! YOUR WEEKLY TV GUIDE
T
V vet and Brighton resident Marc Abraham is returning to our screens with a brand new show, My Pet Shame, co-hosted by Gavin And Stacey’s Joanna Page. That’s occurring to be sure. Now. What’s it about? Marc spills all. What is My Pet Shame about? It’s about explaining, educating and fixing a range of conditions and behaviours of pets, from dogs to cats, alpacas to cockatoos, that their owners find embarrassing and difficult to live with. Tell us a story about filming with Gavin and Stacey’s Joanna Page – that no-one else knows! We were filming ‘Toby the drooling pony’, and Jo decided to dress me up (I didn’t resist!) in all Toby’s leather tack – ie saddle, stirrups, bit and reins – and ride me around the garden outside the studio... Have you ever had a shameful pet? Pets are never shameful. They are, however, very commonly – and sadly – misunderstood. What was the most embarrassing pet you've ever met? I was bitten by a hamster on live telly once – that was a bit embarrassing!!
You’re resident vet on This Morning. Have you made Phil’n’Holly giggle? So far only off-camera – but hopefully it won’t be too long! What’s the most unusual question you've ever been asked on TV? Paul O’Grady once asked me live on air if it was OK to take a goldfish with him on tour. I said yes, as long as he was playing at the Milton Keynes Bowl... PHEW!! Top tips for pet owners this summer? White cats – cover their ear-tips and noses with sunblock as sunburn
“Paul O’Grady asked me if it was OK to take a goldfish on tour” can lead to cancer. Dogs – be wary of the heat, adders and grass seeds. Rabbits – check under their tails for signs of fly-strike/maggots at least twice a day. What TV box set would you take with you to a desert island? Tough one... Any one from Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Sopranos or The Larry Sanders Show. I suppose I should really take ‘Bear Grylls Survival Tips’ or something like that instead though? If you weren’t a TV vet you'd be a... Children’s surgeon – it’s so challenging diagnosing and treating patients who can’t communicate what’s wrong with them by talking ‘normally’. What’s your favourite thing about living in Brighton? Brighton life is so chilled and entertaining. You can walk everywhere keeping one eye on the sea, enjoy great pubs, comedy clubs, vintage clothes shops, and more-than anything Brighton encourages individuality, giving its unique vibe 24/7. My Pet Shame starts on Wednesday 14 July on Sky One at 8pm. follow me on twitter

sunday 18 Don’t Stop Believing Five, 7pm This is Five’s big talent shout-out, with Emma Bunton hosting proceedings in the search to find Britain’s best new all-dancing, all-singing group. Judge/mentors are Anastacia, Tamzin Outhwaite, Duncan James and Charles ‘Chucky’ Klapow. What? Yup, the last one is an award-winning choreographer from LA. Enjoy.
Heartbeat ITV1, 8pm It’s a new series, and nostalgia is still as pretty as ever. Although murder puts a dampener on it for a newcomer to the village. She didn’t do it, she got done by it. Suffice to say, she’s dead. Joe’s not sure who to arrest and when the murder weapon turns up things get more confusing. Sure that nice smile will sort it all out.
Glee E4, 6pm Those Glee kids keep popping up on chat shows, daytime telly and gossip columns, so it may be time to remind ourselves exactly what the fuss was about in the first place. Was it Kurt’s knifetwirling? Ur, no. Was it Mr Schu’s love life? Ur, yes – but just because it’s getting attention in real life shouldn’t confuse things.

monday 19 Identity ITV1, 9pm Nifty idea this, a group working on crime connected with identities. This week it’s old identities catching up when a woman and her ten-year-old son are exposed on the internet as being in witness protection. Guarding duty for Bloom, then. When he’s not off gallivanting with his other life that is. Danger.
Rev BBC2, 10pm Envy can be a blight. Especially when, as a vicar, you hear your old rival on Thought For The Day. What? Adam being outdone in the good stakes? Time to kickstart the old career by going on The One Show. Perhaps not, when an ill-advised comment about homosexuality lands him in very hot water. Blast. Very funny.
The Sex Education Show Vs Pornography E4, 10pm Norfolk’s got a bum rap reputation-wise for its shenanigans, with jokes about six fingered babies a-plenty. So where better to start than with interactive lessons in anatomy, thinks Anna Richardson, than at a school in Norfolk? She also chats with a porn star. Nice job.
