It’s still pretty cold, dark and wintery out there, but we can remember those carefree lazy days of summers long ago. Gorgeous beach guys and dolls used to lounge around on deckchairs, swim in the sea, sunbathe on the beach and mess around with friends even more beautiful than Pamela Anderson and David Hasselhoff. Such was the summer of 2010. It was the birth of Latest TV, and what fun we had! If that doesn’t warm you up, then be sure to catch this week’s show and watch Recha as she cuddles up with Oliver Heath and supreme bed maker Warren Evans. It could only happen in Brighton...

Lord of the rings From rare sapphires to recycled gold, Baroque go the extra mile to give you the perfect wedding ring
S
o, the snow has long melted, spring is in the air, the January sales have come to an end and you have just finished sending out your wedding invitations. The caterers, the band, the venue, and your dress/suit have all been ordered some time ago... now you just need to choose your wedding rings! The wedding ring is an important final detail – not only is it the ultimate symbol of marriage and love, but, along with perhaps the photos, it will be the item that will literally be with you forever. In fact, the ring will probably be the most value-for-money part of the whole wedding you will purchase, as it will be worn every day, so it’s best to try and spend as much as you can afford.
Baroque Bespoke Jewellery specialise in fitted wedding rings and commitment rings, so if you have an unusual shaped engagement ring they can tailor a matching wedding ring to fit it perfectly. As well as having a large number of plain wedding rings to choose from in store, Baroque also stock diamond set bands – if you are feeling a little bit sparkly! There is always a goldsmith on site to discuss commissions and advise on metal choices. They work with all precious metals including palladium, platinum, gold and silver. Your scrap gold can also be used to fashion a new wedding ring (but only if the metal quality is good enough and does not contain solder). Baroque’s ‘Molten’ collection is all made from recycled gold and has a great organic texture, which makes every single ring handmade and unique. They love a commission in the workshop, too; recently they were asked to make a wedding ring for a Canadian geo-physicist, which had to echo parts of his future wife’s engagement ring. This was quite a challenge considering the original engagement ring Baroque made for them gives the future Queen of England’s ring a run for its money – the eight carat cabochon sapphire took Baroque a few months to find the right colour and shape! After taking a little more time to find a matching sapphire for the geophysicist’s ring, Baroque started on some designs that linked the two rings, keeping some elements similar while still trying to retain an edge of masculinity to the finished wedding ring. The finished ring was greatly received by the geo-physicist and is currently making a tour of Canada happily married! If you are getting married, come and visit Baroque for an informal chat – you’ll see that being unique doesn’t have to be expensive, Baroque Bespoke Jewellery, 9 Union Street, Brighton, 01273 777003, www.baroquejewellery.com

Picture perfect Let your wedding photographs leave you with happy memories to treasure forever
C
apturing the magic of your big day is so important. With months (even years!) of planning all boiling down to one day, the day itself will pass by in a blur. A professional wedding photographer will cover every element of your special day, photographing as much – or as little – as you request. “When couples come to us to chat about photography, first and foremost we ask how their day is being planned out with timings, locations and numbers of people,” says Darren Cool of Brighton And Studio. When you’re looking to book your wedding photographer, be sure to look at examples of their work. Ask what is included in the package – additional costs may be charged for travelling further afield, or for CDs or photo-books featuring the images. “We also ask couples to provide us with a list of the names of people they would like in different group shots. I ask them to hand a copy of this list to someone attending the wedding who knows who everyone is – ideally someone with a loud voice! – who can help us round everyone together so we can run through them quickly and smoothly,” Darren continues. “In terms of mapping out the day, I arrive at the wedding ceremony venue at least an hour before people are due to start arriving. I get a feel for the place and find nice places to take pictures so I can operate quickly. Other than that I let the
day naturally run its course and work around the couple. It’s their special day, after all, and shouldn't be dictated too much by the photographer.” Generally, photographing a wedding day runs roughly along the same lines: arrivals, ceremony, group shots, one-on-one bride and groom, venue, speeches, cake cutting and the first dance. Use this as a guide to planning your photographer and their time at a budget to suit you.
WIN YOUR WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY! Latest 7 has teamed up with Brighton And Hove Studio to offer one lucky couple the chance to win a Silver Wedding Package and handmade in-house photo-book! This counts for anywhere in Sussex! The Silver Package consists of a maximum of three hours shooting the wedding ceremony. It includes reportage photography, group shots, and a one-on-one session with the bride and groom. A presentation DVD is provided with all the pictures from the day. With a prize value of up to £400, this is the perfect gift for any couple planning their wedding day. To be in with a chance of winning, your wedding day must be taking place in Sussex (otherwise travelling costs will be added). Answer this question: What date is the Royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton? Email your answer to competitions@thelatest.co.uk with the answer to your question in the body of the email and ‘Wedding photography’ in the subject line. Don’t forget to leave your name and contact details. Alternatively, write to us at the address at the front of the magazine. Closing date for entries: 14 February 2011.

22 GEEKS-ON-WHEELS
Geeks-on-Wheels Jamie Shaw of Geeks-on-Wheels knows what’s new in computerland Cloud Computing Cloud computing will be a hit with chief information officers (CIOs) this year as adoption will happen quicker than expected, according to the analyst firm Gartner. Just three per cent of CIOs currently have the majority of IT running in the cloud or on software-as-a-service (SAAS) technologies, but over the next four years CIOs expect this to rise to 43 per cent. 10% military discount As of today if you are a serving member of the UK forces Geeks-onWheels will give you a 10 per cent discount off any labour charges. This is unconditional and just a small way we can support our forces. Catch a virus social networking The security firm Sophos has reported a massive increase in security threats related to social networking sites such as Facebook in their 2011 Security Report. Sophos has, in the past, been repeatedly critical of social network site security to no avail. In this latest survey they found that 40 per cent of social networking users had received malware via social networking sites, representing a 90 per cent increase from 2009. Over two thirds also said that they have been spammed with 43 per cent being targeted by a social networking site focused phishing attack with spam and phishing both up more than double over the levels in 2009. One of the Facebook specification features Sophos expressed concern about was the automatic tagging of photos with the identities of those pictured. What makes matters worse is the fact that 82 per cent of those surveyed recognised Facebook as the greatest risk to their security. Sophos also reported that France had jumped into second place among countries hosting malware, ahead of Russia, Germany and China, while the US retains the dubious honour of the world's most popular malware host.
Jobs in IT The research firm E-Skills UK has claimed the demand for IT (Information Technology) workers has grown during 2010, with 1.5 million employed in technologybased jobs – equating to one in 20 employed people in the UK. They also say jobs in the technology sector are set to grow five times the national average over the next 10 years. Over a third of those workers were specifically in the IT or telecoms industry (the others had IT jobs in other sectors), and E-Skills UK predict an extra 110,000 recruits were needed in that industry alone this year. I know this all sounds good, but in my experience there is a glut of IT people looking for jobs. The report goes on to say that the number of IT professionals under 30 dropped to just 19 per cent of the workforce, down from 33 per cent in 2001, and the proportion of those over 50 has doubled to 17 per cent raising concerns there may not be enough people to fill these jobs. Let’s wait and see on that one. n the lead up to the 21st anniversary race, the first ever Brighton Half Marathon Training Day took place at the end of January at The Thistle, Brighton. Runners who had signed up for the Marathon could attend the training day. The event consisted of educational, motivational and active sessions that kept everyone moving throughout the day, including a 5km run along part of the race route on Brighton seafront.
More play, please! Local art and creative play provider, Red Jelly, has just launched a new class on Wednesdays to meet demand. The expansion comes following the growing popularity among families with pre-school aged children for a place to go and make a mess while they play with art. Red Jelly already provides classes on a Monday, Thursday, Friday and some Saturdays, and will now also offer a class on Wednesday mornings. “We are thrilled to be adding a new class to our timetable,” commented Red Jelly owner, Tash
Experts from Studio57, ZT Fitness, Lucozade Sport, Sweatshop and Brooks were on hand with professional advice. They answered questions, covering everything from stretching, strengthening and conditioning to nutrition, kit, injury prevention and tips on how to keep motivated throughout the race. All the runners went home feeling confident and inspired. Amy Ku Redler, a yoga and Pilates teacher from London, commented: “I
have thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the training day. As a complete half marathon novice, it gave me clear guidelines on how to create a diet, exercise and fitness plan to prepare myself mentally, physically and emotionally for the challenge next month.” The Brighton Half Marathon takes place on Sunday 20 February 2011, with both the start and finish line on Madeira Drive. General public places are sold out but limited Sussex Beacon VIP bond places are still available. Entry to the Youth Races is still open. www.brightonhalfmarathon.com
Ice surprise Holiday On Ice always makes a big impact when it brings its annual show to the city, and this year’s offering, Energia, was no different. Six families from the Dame Vera Lynn Trust School for Parents were given a special treat as the Brighton Centre donated tickets to the highly-acclaimed show. In addition to the show tickets, the children and their families received VIP treatment, a behind the scenes tour and met the dancers and crew from the show. Howard Barden, commercial manager of the Brighton Centre, commented: “Holiday on Ice is a spectacular show and the Brighton Centre thought it was only fair to share this with a fantastic charity such as The Dame Vera Lynn Trust for Children with Cerebral Palsy. We wanted to show our generosity and thought what better way than to invite along some incredible children for an experience I hope will stay with them forever.”

Praise for Brighton & Hove’s independent shops:
Sussex Police cuts; new homes & jobs; foster parents wanted, & tragedy on Sussex roads
B
ad news on the employment front this week with 800 jobs going, but it’s not all doom and gloom. Sussex Police announced that more than 300 employees would leave the force in the coming three months. The voluntary redundancies are being made as the force tries to save £52 million by 2015. There’s to be no more police community support officers hired and the force may shut Hove Police Station and open other police stations for fewer hours to save money. Traffic officers based at Haywards Heath will now police the roads of Brighton and Hove. There is a petition to keep Hove Police Station open but Chief Constable Martin Richards said: “We have to make significant savings and we have been open about having to lose posts.” More than 200 jobs are going at Edwards Instruments in Crawley, some 300 are going within East Sussex County Council, and there are losses at Brighton-based British Bookshops And Stationers. City councillors and staff have been asked to hand back their Blackberries to save money and there are jobs going there, too. But while it's misery for many, there is some brighter news: Brighton and Hove City Council has announced there will be hundreds of jobs on offer with a plan to build 2,000 homes at Shoreham Harbour.
The council is working on the project with Adur District Council, West Sussex County Council and Shoreham Port Authority. They hope that the scheme will create up to 2,400 jobs over the next 15 to 20 years as up to 2,000 homes are built and new businesses are attracted to the port. New homes and business premises are expected at Aldrington Basin, at the Hove end, South Portslade and the Western Arm – on the north side of the river from Shoreham town centre to Kingston Beach. It foresees up to 500 new jobs and significant investment in new port facilities over the next few years. And those looking for income might want to consider fostering, which can bring in £1,400 a month. The City Council’s fostering team is currently looking for people to give a safe, caring home to children and young people who’ve had a difficult start in life. Those who qualify can be single, married or living with someone, and they don’t have to own their own home – but they do need a spare bedroom. Call 01273 295444 or email fostering@brighton-hove.gov.uk The worst news came from our roads over the past few weeks: a 28-year-old man died after a car carrying four people crashed into a tree in Grand Parade in the centre of Brighton; there was a fatal crash over cliffs at Telscombe Cliffs; and a motorcyclist from Telscombe Cliffs died in a crash on the M23 at Crawley. But more lives may be saved
L
ast week, the influential Centre For Cities think-tank reported once again that Brighton and Hove is one of a handful of cities in the UK that are well-placed to emerge in good shape from the current economic crisis. This is hugely encouraging and has been given credence by some pieces of good news. Firstly, American Express, the city’s largest private sector employer, has announced that they are consulting over plans to transfer work currently handled at their Madrid service centre to their Brighton office, potentially
when the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton undergoes a major revamp over the next five years with the old 19th century Barry building earmarked for demolition. Plans include single rooms for 70 per cent of patients, with ensuite toilets and showers, a big improvement from the existing Florence Nightingale wards rooms. And there’s to be a helipad so patients who need urgent transfer or are isolated can be brought in by air ambulance rather than being flown to London. Some conservationists want the old Barry building preserved. What do you think? email comment@thelatest.co.uk Lastly, the photograph shows the filming of a scene from the new Brighton Rock movie on Brighton seafront – but most of the exterior scenes were shot in Eastbourne. Does it say where Eastbourne is today – and where Brighton has moved to?

creating hundreds of new jobs. This would be a huge boost to the local economy and is further evidence of the attractiveness of Brighton and Hove to companies of all sizes. The city has fast become a hub for businesses keen to exploit our new media expertise, proximity to London, highly educated workforce and exciting lifestyle. We also had good news on the derelict former ice rink site in Queen’s Square, which we have sold to developers called Light Boutique ApartHotel. Subject to planning permission, they plan to build their second facility in the UK here in Brighton and Hove. Being such a successful and popular tourist destination, it is vital that there is enough accommodation for visitors to stay in, and this will extend the range of accommodation on offer. I think this new development will help to regenerate and bring new life to this area of the city, which has suffered since the ice rink itself sadly closed. Adur Theatre Company will be holding open auditions for its first full-length musical theatre production, A Ring of Roses, to be performed as part of this year’s Adur Festival in June. The first show meeting takes place Monday 7 February at The Shoreham Centre in Pond Road, Shoreham-by-Sea at 7.30pm. This initial meeting is an opportunity for those wishing to audition to learn about the characters. The play is set in 1665, during the devastation of the plague and is loosely based on historical fact. There will also be parts for younger performers aged between 10 and 16, who are also invited to attend the show meeting. Youngsters aged 14 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. If you are interested, please email markhall9@yahoo.co.uk for further information. of new housing building. Last year, 380 additional homes were built, including 100 affordable homes for local people, either for rent or shared ownership. There were also increases in office Queens Square and retail space with an extra 11,000sq m being given planning permission over the year. All in all, I am cautiously optimistic about the future prospects for the city. I know a lot of people are feeling the pinch at the moment and so it is vital that we do our bit by making sure we shout from the rooftops that Brighton and Hove is open for business.

I came to Hove today and visited J.J.B. sports, Goldstone retail park, as usual. Yes, I purchased a couple of items in their sale... Then I parked for Nero outside Nick Rivett Sport and went inside having seen something in the window that caught my eye. I appreciated the personal touch and knowledge that a ‘big chain’ doesn’t offer. I hope that recession or no recession, Nick Rivett Sport continues to do well. I shall be calling again. This, despite the fact that fresh, percolating coffee has a famously pleasant and inviting aroma, so much so that the scent of roasting coffee beans is utilised as an enticement by those attempting to offload their homes. ’m running between back-to-back meetings when Helen calls me in a flap. “Help!” she says. “I’ve forgotten the password to my Facebook account and they won’t let me back in without it.” She doesn’t specify who ‘they’ are. She doesn’t have to. I know my friend well enough to know she is picturing a shadowy consortium whose plan for total global domination somehow centres around photos of her lying on the beach in Malia (Summer 2008). Those bastards. “Look, don’t panic,” I say. “There should be some sort of button you can click to be sent a reminder. Do you see it?” The line goes quiet. I can practically hear the sigh of relief. “Okay, but it says I have to type the security word as it appears in the box. God, they don’t want much, do they?” “I’m glad that’s all sorted then. Listen, I really have to–” “Frurgle,” comes the reply. I push the handset harder to my ear. “Say again?” “That’s not a word, is it? Frurgle? Or is it frungle?” My heart sinks. The trouble with internet security codes – that once noble attempt to foil hackers by encouraging human users to recognise and type words like ‘milk’ and ‘beef’ – is they’ve now grown so complex they are next to impossible to read. Then I hang up. An hour later, I look at what she’s sent me. At first I take it to be little more than a pale blur, but slowly – like a Magic Eye picture painted by a maniac – the lines and contours resolve themselves into more familiar shapes: an ear, a cheek, the corner of a pair of specs. Snap Shots Photographer Diana Frangi captures the faces and places that define our city. This week: The Master Blues Brothers, Sam and Jim Devereaux
“
Since we got the band together we are really having a riot bringing the blues back to Brighton. It’s a very tongue in cheek show; we want people to have fun, and enjoy themselves dancing to the original Blues Brothers tunes as well as some popular soul and R’n’B classics we added to the repertoire. We really are brothers and we also look a bit like Jake and Elwood... the Lord works in mysterious ways.
”
Everybody knows the songs: ‘Everybody Needs Somebody’, ‘Soul Man’, ‘Rawhide’, ‘In The Midnight Hour’, ‘Minnie The Moocher’, Sweet Home Chicago’, and many others. Now, here they are again, with a twosome every bit as good as the originals: Sam and Jim Devereaux, or, to give them their correct title, The Master Blues Brothers. Sam and Jim are the product of three generations of singers, actors and artists. Sam is an actor and voice-over who has been working professionally in London since 2004 in film, cabaret, theatre and television. Jim performs a wide variety of impersonations and comedy sketches . He established himself as a professional with his consummate first act, ‘This Is Elvis’, at the age of 18. The next riotous gig of this fabulous Brightonbased tribute act, The Master Blues Brothers, is on Friday 4 February at Latest Musicbar. The show starts at 8pm and tickets cost £5. Celebcity with Jo Brooks A star-studded afternoon on the Orient Express; Alex Reid makes himself at home; Oscar nominations
All aboard!
ALEX WON’T BUDGE After last week’s not so shocking news that Katie Price has finally split with hubby of five minutes, Alex Reid, it seems that Katie is finding it quite hard to extract Alex from her huge Surrey mansion. Estranged hubby Alex Reid had flatly refused to move out of the marital home so Katie, it has been reported, has hatched a cunning plan. The mumof-three plans to sell up pronto and relocate to a secret country bolthole. Since announcing the end of her second marriage, Katie Price, 32, has made it clear she doesn’t want Alex, 35, around. She has been away up north, staying with friends and cavorting with polo hunks in Switzerland. But so far the cross-dressing cage fighter has refused to pack up his cross-dressing clothes and leave the home!
I
spent a completely dreamy afternoon the other week as I boarded the Orient Express at London’s Victoria Station. I joined a delightful throng of people who were all guests of my pal Stuart Higgins, who runs the top London PR of the same name. After shivering on the platform we were shown to our carriage whose name was Gwen and used to make up part of the famous Brighton Belle Pullman train – how very apt! The train was buzzing with part-time actors dressed in 1920s-style and included my personal favourite – Pinky Pinkerton – who was a bit of a cad and kept flashing his large fob watch at us. The train pulled out of the station to the sound of a brass band on the platform and then we were served the most sumptuous five-course lunch with – I hate to say it – too much wine! I sat next to Raleigh Addington from the current series of The Apprentice. Raleigh, a charming chap, sadly has to pull out of the hit show after his brother suffered a serious injury while on duty in Afghanistan. Raleigh now runs the very successful charity, Tickets For Troops, after being inspired by his brother’s incredible story. Also on board was ex-GMTV anchor Andrew Castle, who was a complete hit with the lady passengers on board as he happily posed for pictures and signed autographs as we meandered our way through the Surrey countryside. Two Sussex players, Rana Naved-ul-Hasan and Yasir Arafat, were in the West Indies, but both were representing their native Pakistan. How different it will be in 2011 as the leading players from throughout the world gather in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, the three countries who are co-hosting the 2011 World Cup. Up for England are no less than three Sussex players: all-rounder Luke Wright, Sussex captain Mike Yardy, and Ashes hero Matt Prior. A fourth Sussex player, Ed Joyce, has been cleared to represent the country of his birth, Ireland. Given that each country is permitted a squad of 15 players, to have three from one County Club, and a small county at that, is no mean feat for Sussex. No other County Club is contributing more than two players to the England squad, and many none at all. Mike Yardy and Matt Prior are both products of the highly successful Sussex youth system, and Luke Wright has been with the County since he was 19 years old. A huge amount of credit for nurturing and developing these three extraordinarily players must go to current coach Mark Robinson and his predecessor Peter Moores, not forgetting the youth academy coaches. The selection of Matt Prior was unexpected as “To have three players he has not been a regular choice in the limited from one County Club in overs form of the game for a couple of years. the Cricket World Cup is However, wicket keeper Prior was one of the stars no mean feat for Sussex” of the recent Ashes series. He came within one dismissal of equalling Alan Knott’s all-time England record for the number of dismissals in the Ashes. His six catches in the first innings in Melbourne was one short of the best ever by a wicket keeper, a feat achieved by just four keepers anywhere in the world at Test level. Prior’s 100 in the fifth and final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground was the fastest Ashes century by an Englishman since Botham’s in 1984. All this resulted in his call up at the expense of Surrey’s Steven Davies. The England side may have struggled in the seven match series against Australia but it is expected to put in a very strong challenge come the real thing which starts on Saturday 19 February. Anything short of a semi-final place will be disappointing, and England, with its three Sussex stars, is capable of beating the best of the rest. My prediction is a semi-final lineup consisting of England, Australia, India and South Africa. And in a corner of some foreign field I am sure you will hear the strains of ‘Sussex By The Sea’.

Up the Albion! Mark Brailsford welcomes the Blue Noone era SIX POINTS CLEAR!
It’s looking good for the Seagulls who made it six points clear at the top of the table after an excellent win against Colchester. This definitely made up for losing at Bournemouth who, like the Albion, are looking a likely bet to challenge for automatic promotion. There was no disgrace in losing to a very good Bournemouth side; Albion could have got something out of the game but for a few missed chances and a tactically astute performance by the opposition. Meanwhile, the Glen Murray saga continues, with many suggesting that he was saying goodbye at the end of the match. But there “Craig Noone came he was last Tuesday being on from the subs bench awarded Man of the Match against Colchester... and scored an absolute The other encouraging performance against cracker of a goal” Colchester was from Craig Noone who came on from the subs bench and scored an absolute cracker of a goal, cutting in from the left and burying a perfectly placed right foot shot in the far corner. Withdean went crazy with delight sparking only one debate: should fans chant “Nooney” (to sound like the England chant about Wayne Rooney) or sing “Blue Noone?” Blue Noone does it for me.
SUMMER MADNESS.
At the time of writing there is talk by UEFA to move the football season from winter to the summer. This shocking suggestion has come from UEFA president Michel Platini no less. The suggestion has been made to synchronise football all over the world. It may also have something to do with the decision by Fifa to hold the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, which Fifa President Sepp Blatter has suggested could be held in winter. This suggestion has only just got through to the heads of the football powers in Europe, the so called big five – Italy, England, Germany, Spain and France – but indications are that all seem set to object to the proposal. Let’s hope so, as the ramifications for the social fabric of the country are enormous. First of all, this would be a terrible blow to the game of cricket. It would be a disaster for that reason alone. But other factors should be considered such as the effect this would have on family life. It’s bad enough for football fans with families that the winter months can take out whole weekends thanks to Sky televising games on a Saturday/Sunday/Monday, but summertime with its long school holidays would be a cause for much marital and familial strife if there was a full football programme. It would also go completely against the seasonal nature of the game, in the sense that those gloomy cold and dark winter nights are made more bearable by watching football and was why the game was invented (by us!) in the first place. But it’s not just England who would suffer. Italian and Spanish summers can be insufferably hot; it would be financial suicide to have matches on during a Mediterranean heat wave, let alone the risk of players dying from heat exhaustion. As for the game of cricket, there are many football fans who are also cricket fans. This would cause a schism of religious proportions with both sports losing out. It’s bad enough that the football season seems to encroach on cricket more and more as time passes, something that understandably infuriates cricket lovers as it is, but this would be an absolute hammer blow. The Shires would and should revolt. At the very least, any politician going along with this would be out on his ear before you could say Rupert Murdoch. The governance of football is under increasing scrutiny with the minister for sport, Hugh Robertson, claiming that English football was the “worst-governed sport in the country.” It looks as if that may be an understatement; it could be the worst governed sport in the world at this rate.

L7 INTERVIEW 31 I once did an impression of him and he left me a very long, funny answer machine message.” Keeping his head down, Lenny tried to get through his meal as quickly as possible. “Suddenly, Steve was at my table saying hello and introducing me to a man called Sam Buntrock who’d just directed a Broadway production of Sondheim’s Sunday In The Park with George. I took his card.” Fast forward a few months and Lenny and the producers were discussing who might direct Cradle To Rave. “I put Sam’s name in the ring, never thinking we’d get him. But we did! And that’s why I know we’re on the right track already.” So, what’s the show going to be about in detail? “It will be a musical journey through my life. The first thing I ever did on stage wasn’t telling jokes but impersonating Elvis. When I appeared at the Queen Mary ballroom in Dudley, aged 16, I noticed that the crowd divided into musical tribes.
“I walked into a restaurant and immediately saw Steve Martin and Paul Simon sitting at a table...”
LOVELY LENNY Lenny Henry talks about falling for Steve Martin, nursery rhymes, ex-wife Dawn French and his new show Cradle To Rave
L
enny Henry looked at his computer one day and realised he had 28 days’ worth of iTunes downloaded. “I knew it already, of course,” he says, “but it was proof positive that I’m a big music lover.” That realisation became the seed of an idea which blossomed into Cradle To Rave, his new oneman show about to tour the country. “I’m a massive consumer of music but I also realised that I’m not able to share the music I’ve got inside me with other people because I can’t play a musical instrument. I can sing and move a bit. But it wasn’t until I was 40 – that’s 12 years ago – that I started learning to play the piano, on the same day as my daughter, Billie. “She long ago outstripped me. But I’ve made up my mind that I’m going to try and play a piano as a part of this show. And that’s really scary.” Not that he’s afraid of taking risks. His recent performance as Othello in Leeds, on tour and then in the West End, had critics dusting off their superlatives.
“Yes, Othello was scary,” he agrees. “I’d never done Shakespeare before. I’d never really got it. Then I took a degree in English Literature and slowly came to realise that they’re just great stories written in extraordinary language.” Lenny’s last stand-up show, So Much Things To Say, had been directed by the highly respected Simon McBurney. “I wanted to work with someone of a similar calibre this time round to give the show some structure.” Lenny happened to be in New York for a series he was making for Radio 4. “I walked into a restaurant and immediately saw Steve Martin and Paul Simon sitting at a table having lunch together. Steve Martin is one of my favourite comedians on this earth; Paul Simon is one of my favourite performers. “As I moved forwards, not looking where I was going, I tripped over a chair, a table, another chair, another table and a chair. In sequence. The waiters thought it was hilarious, Steve Martin just looked the other way. In fact, he knows who I am because
“I was a soul boy and there were a lot of Jamaican guys who thought all soul boys were gay. The Jamaicans liked reggae. And there were kids who were into glam rock and others who liked Black Sabbath. So I thought that would be a good basis for a comedy routine.” Lenny will also be recalling his childhood. “I sang nursery rhymes to Billie each evening and, when she was older, read almost every Harry Potter book to her. But I don’t remember my parents singing to me. “My dad was so tired and grumpy by the time he got home, he wouldn’t be in the mood for nursery rhymes. If anything, he’d question the lyrics. ‘Three blind mice? See how they run? I’ll tell you how they run. Into each other because they can’t see a blasted thing.’” So, the first half of the show will track Lenny from babyhood to teenager. “In the second half, I’ll talk about moving to London and getting married and the compromises you have to make musically. Dawn had her music; I had mine. “On my side, there’d be Thin Lizzy, Public Enemy, Led Zeppelin, Frank Zappa, Talking Heads and Tom Waits. On her side, it would be Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison and Norah Jones. So we had to meet in the middle. Or, to put it another way, Sade.” Dawn will crop up a lot in the second half. Inevitably, says Lenny. “We were together for 25 years and she’ll always be a part of my life. We’re best friends. It’s unfortunate that we’re getting divorced but what’s really good is that we’re united in our love for our daughter. “We like each other very, very much and want it to stay that way. Yes, it’s sad that we’re not together anymore but what’s great is that, when we do see each other, there’s no acrimony. We’re getting on with it. This is the next chapter in the book and we’re trying to do it the best way we can.” This is a busy time for Lenny. As well as crisscrossing the country in Cradle To Rave, he’ll also be hosting a new BBC1 Saturday night show called Magicians. Othello, stand up, TV presenting... no-one could accuse Lenny of sticking rigidly to one thing. “You’ve got to present a moving target,” he thinks, and he’s only half-joking. “You can’t be complacent. I’ve been a comedian now for 36 years. I like to think I can branch out a bit. Mind you, it’ll be weird walking out on stage again. Just me – and the audience.” Lenny Henry – Cradle To Rave, is touring. See it at The Hawth, Crawley, 10 February; The White Rock Theatre, Hastings, 11 February; Theatre Royal, Brighton, 13 February. ANDREW KAY’S FOOD & DRINK
Food & Drink Andrew Kay finds a change of name but no change in standards at Sam Of Sevendials
Seventh wonder
I
my attention. So the daily special of fillet of brill with sauté potatoes and curly kale won my vote. It was delicious too: dark green, bittersweet and basking in a glossy butter dressing. The sauté potatoes were good but nothing compared to the kale. As for the brill, well it lived up to its name, and the sauce of capers, brown shrimps and a little anchovy certainly worked. I loved the lot and ate it with due reverence. Despite this being a lunch we both felt the need for a pudding. Mr R shocked me by not asking for the sticky toffee and choosing the plum tarte tatin instead. I sneaked a bit and it was excellent – better than apple in my book. The home-made vanilla ice cream was great too. I had the sticky toffee, which was surprisingly light with just the right amount of cinnamon to taste good and not medicinal. Mark and Sam tried to tempt me with a great plate of cheese but I was hot for a pud. Despite this, they sent out a taste of a Canterbury cheese that I had never had before and very nice it was too. So there are some changes, yes, but there is no change in their commitment to excellent and satisfying food. Sam will be cooking at both venues on a two-week rotation and making monthly menu changes at each. The very popular brunch menu is now available at both restaurants, and at Sevendials there is even a chance to leave your kids – should you have any – with a childminder while you eat (from 10am until noon on Saturdays and Sundays). There is also an excellent children’s menu at lunch and up to 7pm in the evenings. Sam’s Of Sevendials, 1 Buckingham Place, Brighton, BN1 3TD, 01273 885555; Sam’s Of Brighton, 1 Paston Place, Kemp Town, BN2 1HA, 01273 676222 www.samsofsevendials.co.uk
’m not in the business of embarrassing chefs but this time I may just raise a blush. I simply can’t understand why Sam Metcalfe has not been plucked and polished for TV stardom. He cooks brilliantly and looks as good as his food. For that matter, so does Mark, head chef at the Sevendials branch of what has to be one of Brighton’s great food and drink successes. “Ham hock is the new Sam’s Of Brighton took over Paston Place and didn’t black, but if you’re look back, so the decision to rebrand the original at Sevendials makes total sense. At the same time, they going to have it then you have given the place a bit of a face-lift, reworking the space rather than the style. want it as good as this” Given the changes, it seemed an appropriate time to stop by Sam’s Of Sevendials and give the menu a bit of a thrashing. I have been a lover of Sam’s kind of cooking since day one. He has a passion for the robust flavours and traditional dishes that I love. He often re-constructs them and makes them his own, but on the whole his style of food is simple and true to the produce he sources so well. Over the years, Sam’s has been one the best places to eat both game and fish but they have also dedicated a great deal of time to ensuring their bread and pastry sections match up to the same high standard. That’s why Mr R and I rapidly cleared a basket of bread – that and the thick slab of good cold butter that came with it – on our visit. We also had a glass of good champagne that knocked all the sharp corners off a very spiky Saturday morning. Mr R started with linguine with wild mushrooms and truffle oil. I didn’t get a look in but he declared it delicious and polished it off. I had the ham hock terrine with sauce gribiche and a French bean salad. Ham hock is the new black, but if you’re going to have it then you want it as good as this – and with a sauce as excellent as this, too. Mr R moved on to roast Brookland white chicken with aioli. We eat these Brighton & Hove birds at home and they’re worth every penny. At Sam’s, the plate was simply Restaurant Week! piled with great chunks of leg, thigh, and breast, a pile of superb roast potatoes, a dish of heady garlic sauce and some buttered curly kale (more on Running from Friday 1 to Friday 8 the kale later). Mr R fell upon it like he had never seen food before and ate April as part of the Brighton & every last scrap, which was quite a feat with such a magnificent portion. Hove Food and Drink Festival’s The cheeky souls slipped us a sorbet between courses – plum served with ‘Spring Harvest’, the city-wide a sparkling Canadian ice wine; it was rather nice. Restaurant Week is the perfect Back to the curly kale: whilst not a veggie I am a vegetable lover and often way to promote your business. make my choices based on the accompanying dishes. Skin saviours This month, Shine Hair & Beauty tailors skin-care products & treatments to suit your needs
What are the benefits of massage? With ever increasing stresses in modern day life, our bodies suffer the consequences. Massage will help improve the function of muscles and joints as well as help reduce pain and improve posture. It is important that after a massage, you drink plenty of water to help rid the body of toxins which are released into the bloodstream during a treatment. I am trying to achieve a dewy glow to my skin without using lots of make-up. Any advice? Aveda’s Tourmaline charged products are brilliant. Tourmaline is a naturally energising mineral that helps infuse visible life and radiance into skin. Drink plenty of water so that skin stays hydrated and exercise regularly as it brings renewed oxygen to the skin, making it brighter and healthier.
My hands are dry and chapped, and my nails break easily. What can I do to help them? To help prevent this you must try to keep your hands nourished – Aveda Hand Relief is excellent. Avoid over-using gel sanitizers as they strip the hands and nails of natural oils (this is where Aveda Hand Relief comes in good use!). Regular manicures are essential as your technician will be able to restore your nails and skin to a healthy balance. I have oily skin and would love to try a facial, but I've heard that they can leave your skin red, especially after extractions? Firstly, facials are amazing as long as you find a skincare product that suits your skin. Here at Shine we use Aveda products. We can do extractions but they are not always necessary. Try the Aveda Outer Peace
Facial, which is designed for acne and will not leave skin red or blotchy. If you are unsure which facial to try, ask our therapists who will be happy to recommend the best one for your skin type. I'm interested in waxing but I’m not sure if I need to do anything to the area beforehand. The best thing to do is to leave the area so your therapist knows what they have to work with. Make sure you don’t put body lotion on the area on the day of waxing, as it creates a ‘sticking’ barrier. For areas such as the bikini and underarm, opt for a 'hot wax' as it is kinder to skin and is perfect for areas with stronger hair. C.W. STONEKING, BROWNBIRD RUDY RELIC
As an allergy sufferer, I was keen to learn more about the causes and treatment of allergies from UCL’s expert Fred Pearce. In a very clear and concise lecture, with the right balance of facts and humour, I learned a lot more about why my body reacts in the way it does. Café Scientifique is a great forum for learning in a relaxed environment, and I, for one, am excited to see what their future speakers will cover. Right on cue, my body decided to sneeze all the way through this interesting, enjoyable and informative event, much to my companion's amusement! Latest Musicbar, 20 January JJJJJ Angela Barnes
Well-matched opener Rudy overcame a chatty sold-out crowd with great aplomb. The Mexican New Yorker’s self-penned ‘Holler Blues’ went down a treat for those who chose to listen. C.W. delivered a hugely entertaining set of story songs interspersed with the usual tall tales of tropical adventures. Picking songs from both his albums, this captivating raconteur, superbly backed by his Primitive Horn Orchestra, had us all eating out of his hand. After a couple of solo songs, the band returned for a joyfully rousing version of ‘Rich Man Blues’. A great night of pure hokum, delivered with pure heart. Komedia, 25 January JJJJJ Steve Clements
THE HANOVER BAND
VIVE LA FRANCE OPENING NIGHT
A fantastically well played and varied programme proved the ideal way in which to enjoy a chilly winter’s afternoon. The beautiful venue with its sublime architecture and clean acoustic was the cherry on the cake. The highlights were Vivaldi’s well known Trio Sonata, ‘La Follia’, executed with a bravura passion, and the less well known solo pieces for harpsichord, in particular Rameau’s ‘Les Cyclopes’ and Couperin’s ‘Les Baricades Misterieuses’ with its echos of Pachelbel’s famous Canon in D. The Handel Trio Sonatas were more workman-like affairs and, despite the gorgeous buttery tones of Joel Raymond’s oboe, never really took flight. St Nicholas Church, 23 January JJJJJ Gary Mepsted
JOHN OTWAY BIG BAND
A capacity crowd bore testament to the enduring popularity of this loveable maverick. He began the first of two sets with his hit, ‘Really Free’. It still sounded fresh, and his diving somersault with guitar caused a few gasps from the front row. The band’s in-jokes were a little laboured at times but you can’t help but like this outsider who refuses to give up. Second hit, ‘Bunsen Burner’ saw Otway solo on theremin and his attempt at an international rock anthem, ‘We Rock’, was a clichéridden hoot. A second set of covers rounded off an enjoyable evening with this self-effacing charmer. Ropetackle Arts Centre, Shoreham-bySea, 20 January JJJJJ Steve Clements
Brighton’s annual Anglo/French festival kicked off with a great lineup combining local talent and acts from across The Channel. It may have been the not-so-Continental early start that kept the crowds away but local Francophiles, Transformer, played a storming ‘80s influenced set to a select audience of young French ex-pats and in-theknow Brightonians. ‘Heartbreak’ got nearly everyone dancing and the long, last number featured a quiff keyboard solo. DJ duo and indemand remixers, Punks Jump Up, delivered a lively and eclectic set that would have been perfect in a packed club, and everyone that came made the most of it. Komedia, 27 January JJJJJ Steve Clements
SCARY MARY SKETCH SHOW
The troupe’s first show in the Komedia should probably undergo a rewrite and a rethink before their upcoming March performance. There were glimpses of good gags and funny ideas peppered throughout the show, but ultimately these were often buried beneath over-long, drawn-out sketches. The eight-strong cast were at their best with the shorter, snappier jokes that occasionally punctuated the longer scenes, and one absurd sketch about a man who believes he has no limbs proved a late favourite. However, the material was generally of mixed quality; a tighter, shorter, sharper show in March would be recommended. Komedia, 23 January JJJJJ James Hamilton

SELF-ISH WILL SELF IN: WHAT’S NEW ABOUT THE NEW YEAR? 24 January, Komedia JJJJJ
T
his miserable Monday at the height of January’s traditional holiday hangover was supposed to be (depending on your sources) the most depressing day of the year. With no money after the festive splurge, resolutions broken and grim weather to dampen our collective spirits, we could be forgiven for wallowing. With this in mind, performance poet and slam regular Paul Lyalls curated this spoken word evening to turn that frown upside down by celebrating grumpiness. Lyalls proved a decent, likeable compere, all gangly frame and nervous energy as he riffed on reaching his 40th birthday and the horrors of getting old. Rounding off his opening performance with a poem linking fashion and religion, The Label’s Prayer, the crowd chuckled politely if not wholeheartedly. Perhaps a more natural performer than the slightly awkward Lyalls, the night’s main support, ‘sit-down comic’ Liz Bentley, trod a fine line between frank confessional blurt, cabaret quirk, and character comedy rant. Accompanying her caustic, funny digs at the absurdity of cognitive behavioural therapy (she’s a real-life therapist) with Casio keyboard and ukulele strums, Bentley encouraged much seat-squirming with songs with titles like ‘Separating From My Partner Of Eleven Years And Father Of My Two Children Aged Two And Eight’. Though effective, the delivery wasn’t always so deft, leaving occasional and just plain uneasy silence. Still, most
were there for the star act, which didn’t disappoint. Novelist and professional curmudgeon Will Self needed no introduction. Shambling on like a wraith and sullenly pouring sorrow-drowning wine for audience members, Self is 50 this year and looked increasingly like your archetypal grumpy old man. Actually, he was probably a grumpy young man too, to be fair, but let’s not dwell on that. The acclaimed author of The Book Of Dave And Great Apes was in conversation with his friend, Matthew De Abaitua, author of The Art of Camping: The History And Practice Of Sleeping Under The Stars and written/spoken word allrounder. The pair’s great natural chemistry was obvious. Silly, ad-libbed topics veered from the “slightly overweight, jolly, ineffectual” De Abaitua being raised by a pack of police to the “too febrile to hold a bottle of wine” Self having a love child with the former chief of said police, Sir Ian Blair. Often hilarious, the two bounced off each other with a kind of slow-motion Ricky Gervais/Karl Pilkington dynamic of abuse. Joyously (or as joyful as Self’s sallow mug could get) ignoring the show’s aim (other than what seemed a perfunctory experiment in transferring happiness from the cheerful to the depressed), the two were funniest having lost the plot. Self’s belligerence was perfectly smoothed out by De Abaitua’s affable acceptance, and although the show’s theme was largely kicked to the curb, clearly no-one minded with this team at the helm. Marti Webb, Gemma Craven, Sarah Brightman, Denise van Outen and Patsy Palmer have starred in the show over the years. In this latest and definitive version of the classic musical, the work has been remodeled for Claire Sweeney with an exclusive new song, ‘Dreams Never Run On Time’. The wonderful original score, the chart-topping song Take That Look Off Your Face, and the title track Tell Me On A Sunday also feature. The show charts the romantic misadventures of a young English girl in New York. Full of optimism, she seeks success and love, but as she weaves her way through the maze of the city and her own anxieties and heartaches, she begins to wonder whether she’s been looking for love in all the wrong places. Claire Sweeney came to the public’s attention in Brookside playing Lindsey Corkhill. Trained at the famous Italia Conti stage school in London, Sweeney was turned down for a student version of the show Chicago but later went on to star as Roxie Hart in the West End production. It was a demanding role and one that proved Sweeney could both sing and dance. These are talents she will need to possess to perform the demanding solo role in Tell Me On A Sunday. Tell Me On A Sunday, Theatre Royal Brighton, 28 February–5 March, 7.45pm, plus 2.30pm matinee Thursday and Saturday, please contact the venue for ticket prices, www.ambassadortickets.com follow me on twitter

s I have tirelessly (or is that tiresomely?) waffled on about over they years, the DIY movement is a good thing – something to be encouraged, benefitting artists and the public alike, and, ironically, providing work and lots of little cottage industries here, there and everywhere. The world of folk has known and practised this for some time, and Emily Barker is another in a long line of exceptional DIY folk artists who just get on with it. They are brave artistic souls with something to say and plenty of people to hear it... “I release material on my own label, Everyone Sang,” says Emily. “I’m quite impatient! I can’t sit around waiting for an offer... but it’s just great being independent, financially and otherwise.” The new album, Almanac, features stories of love, renewal, the importance of community, and our relationship to the earth, as well as darker truths of untold atrocities committed by settlers on indigenous Australians and the mass hysteria regarding a Scottish witch-hunt. “I call my music contemporary folk,” Emma says. “Lots of traditional folkies don't think of us as folkies, but we do get invited to folk gigs; we do a few jigs as well as traditional folk songs. “My mum and dad are big fans of ‘60s and ‘70s folk revival music, and I grew up listening to a lot of that. My mum also played a bit of guitar and would sing us some folk songs.” Hailing from the rural backwater town of Bridgetown in Western Australia, at age 19 she donned a backpack and headed out to travel the world. “I stopped university in Australia and ended up in Cambridge where I met Rob Jackson who plays with Boo Hewerdine and the Broken Family band. He asked me to do some vocals at the Cambridge Folk Festival.” Together they formed the band, The Low Country, producing a couple of albums that were championed by the late John Peel. “I stared to write my own songs and moved back to Perth where I started playing acoustic nights," Emma continues. “Flitting back and forth between Australia and the UK, she released her debut album Photos.Fires.Fables in 2007, followed by Despite The Snow in 2008, which saw the birth of The Red Clay Halo, an all-female trio consisting of Anna Jenkins, Jo Silverston and Gill Sandell. Collectively, they provide backing harmony vocals and play violin, cello and musical saw, accordion, piano and flute. The album's opening track, ‘Nostalgia’, was discovered by composer Martin Phipps who re-recorded it with Emily for use as the theme tune to the hit television series Wallander. Emily went on to win a BAFTA for the song. Last year, Emily launched a campaign on pledgemusic.com to raise funds to promote and market Almanac. The pledge reached 114 per cent of its target within five weeks. “It’s full time for me now,” Emily says about her music. “It has been for the last 18 months, although I still do the occasional shift in a café...” Emily Barker & The Red Clay Halo, 15 February, Latest Musicbar, 8.30pm, £7 follow me on twitter

fter writing Brit zombie success 28 Weeks Later and George Clooney vehicle The American, Rowan Joffe decides to turn his hand to adapting Graham Greene’s classic, Brighton Rock, for its second outing to the big screen. It’s not a light undertaking considering the calibre of the original cast featuring Lord Richard Attenborough as the cold teen tearaway Pinkie Brown and William Hartnell – future Doctor Who – as his colleague Dallow. Joffe’s rendition sets itself apart from its predecessor immediately by placing the events in the 1960s, as opposed to the 1930s. Sam Riley (Control’s Ian Curtis) stars as the aloof young criminal, working his way up through the ranks of organised crime, whose path crosses young waitress Rose (Andrea Riseborough). She holds the only information that could possibly link Pinkie to a killing, bringing the two together as he charms her silence with sinister ease. Meanwhile, ‘mature’ seaside entertainer, Ida (Helen Mirren), refuses to let the death lie, with menaces from mob leader Andy Serkis and faithful aid from Pinkie’s crew played by Phil Davis and Nonso Anozie. Released 4 February. Showing at Odeon, Cineworld and Duke Of York’s Picturehouse Listings

saturday 5 Primeval ITV1, 7.30pm It’s the last in the series of reptiles and monsters already, and generally this lot go out with more of a bang than a whimper. Here’s the bang – there’s a new anomaly and the gang can’t close it. Oh, and Danny reappears from his journey through Rift Valley with a warning. Oh, and Ethan’s secrets are revealed. BANG!
CSI: NY Five, 9.40pm Gary Sinise and his New York crew are poised to follow the clues and put together the jigsaw that is the crime. But is it an armed robbery, a serial killer, or both? A robber steals $5 million in jewels from a lawyer, but then everyone who comes into contact with the heist keeps dying. Puzzles, puzzles, puzzles.
American Idol: The Auditions ITV2, 4.40pm & 5.35pm Hey, Dawg – you’re in! Followed by whoops and tears of joy. Makes you question whether a less enthusiastic successful candidate might just have his/her golden ticket snatched back. Brilliant delusional fun with Randy, Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez being the voices of reason.
