It’s Festival time in Brighton & Hove, which means the Artists Open Houses have opened their doors for another year! Maps of all the trails can be picked up across the city. We love nothing better than browsing and buying arts and crafts, and there is so much going on throughout May that we’ve made it easier by bringing the Artists Open Houses to you! We have 11 special programmes online, featuring artists in their own houses. So here’s your chance to go ‘through the keyhole’ so to speak as we visit the artists in their own environment. Val Aviv and Jenni Davidson chat to artists such as Eve Shepherd, one of the most respected artists in her field of sculpture, and Jane Denman, whose remarkable talent for Blind Contour Drawings produce images that seem to come alive. Plus see Jamie McCartney’s Great Wall Of Vagina and Grace Siregar’s new exhibition. This is just a small taster of the Artists Open Houses. The festival is huge, extending outside Brighton to areas including Newhaven and Ditchling. Watch our programmes online and then plan your own festival trail! It’s all online at www.thelatest.tv See more on Artists Open Houses at www.aoh.org.uk.

Watch our shows at www.thelatest.tv If you want to be involved with Latest TV come along to our open meetings every Monday at Latest Musicbar, 5.30pm.

The Green Party & The Green Deal, early retirement, & art talent in the Open Houses

G

reen is the colour – whether we’re talking politics, commerce or homemaking. The Green Party, for the first time, became the largest single party in Brighton and Hove with 23 seats out of a possible 54 in the local elections and a new leader is due to be appointed at a meeting of the full council on Thursday 19 May. Meanwhile, Climate Change minister Greg Barker visited the city to view eco alterations at the Hove home of designer and TV presenter Oliver Heath and then met with business leaders and academics to discuss the government’s new Green Deal to cut carbon emissions in businesses, building and homes. He said of the Green Deal and Brighton: “The Green Deal, when it is launched next year, will unlock billions of pounds of new investment. It will be the biggest national home improvement programme since the war and will create a massive opportunity for British business. “The excellent discussions today at Brighton University with people from across the city show that Brighton will be well placed to lead the way in this exciting new sector.” The money will come mainly from the energy industry. Sussex Police announced 75 officers with 30 years service could be forced to retire this year as the force seeks to save £52m by 2015.

Chief Constable Martin Richards said it was a “very reluctant decision forced by the money debate”. He also announced an equally unpopular economy – that police stations in Hove, Eastbourne and Worthing have been earmarked for closure. The Sussex Police Authority will make a decision on the Chief’s recommendations on 26 May. The moves mean about 200 police officers could be forced to retire over the next four years. It shows nowhere is safe from the economic woes – troubles that could partly explain why the AV yes campaign failed.

Pavilion MP Caroline Lucas blamed, in part, the “alarmist rehetoric” of ‘no’ campaigners, but Latest 7 reader Anne Robertson from Patcham replied: “I voted no because this was a ridiculous time to conduct such a poll and potentially a terrible waste of money at a time when we are involved in two wars and are

n estimated 12,000 Brighton & Hove Albion fans lined the seafront as the Seagulls took an open-top bus parade to celebrate winning the League One title. The whole squad joined manager Gus Poyet on his “Gus Bus” as they set off from Grand Avenue on Sunday 8 May after enjoying a civic reception at Brighton and Hove City Council’s offices. Mayor of Brighton and Hove, Geoff Wells, said: “It’s great to see so many people coming out to

support the team. Their success is a sign of how Brighton and Hove is booming as a city.” Brighton amassed more points than any other side in the Football League to secure promotion to the Championship in their last season at the Withdean. But according to Albion Chairman, Tony Bloom, the manner in which

embroiled in the worst financial crisis in living memory. “This was a highly inappropriate distraction that should have been postponed.” What do you think? Email comment@thelatest.co.uk Two Brighton men have been arrested on suspicion of murdering a man from Portslade who has been missing since January. The pair, a 60-year-old man, of no fixed address, and a 57-year-old man, face questions about the disappearance of Gary Hampson. Meanwhile, the artistic talents of people in Brighton and Hove who have learning disabilities will be on display at two venues during the Brighton Festival. Wellington House, on Wellington Street, Brighton, is open each Saturday and Sunday during May from 11am to 6pm as part of the Open Houses Festival trail. The Our Art collective is also holding an open studio event at 80 Buckingham Road, Brighton, on Saturday 21 May from 11am–4pm. Both locations are part of the Day Options service run by Brighton & Hove City Council to provide daytime activities for people with learning disabilities. Getting back to colours – green may be flavour of the month but blue prevailed for Albion’s promotion/champions tour along the seafront. (See more on the open-top bus parade below). And manager Gus Poyet announced the first friendly at the new Falmer stadium will be against Spurs. That should be a bit of ‘all white’ for the fans!

promotion was secured was even more impressive. “To win the league playing the kind of football we have is a tribute to the manager, his staff and all the players,” he said. ONLY JOKING!

Bare cheek Brian Mitchell and Joseph Nixon’s thoroughly scurrilous Brighton column

What was that? Can't remember the name of a film, book, TV show or whatever? MIKE HUNTER has all the answers...

also that he was something of a controversial figure; a drinker and a womaniser, especially in the company of a like-minded “pack” of friends, and that it was alleged he had links with members of the mafia. For some reason I seem to associate the phrase “doobiedoobie-doo” with him. I’ve scoured record shops and looked all over the internet, but can seem to find no evidence of this performer. Please use your sleuthing skills to help me so that I can enjoy the same music my old dad did. Thanking you in advance, Robert Mulligan, Hove

Dear Mike, I wonder if you can help me with a problem that’s been nagging at me for some time now. As a child I recall my father (now sadly no longer with us) being a great music fan. For hours he would sit at his turntable, humming or singing along to his favourite discs. I have been able to purchase most of the records he liked and am now able to enjoy them

myself, but one artiste continues to elude me. He was, I think, an ItalianAmerican and had a very recognisable voice, and a unique way of phrasing in the big-band and swing numbers that he sang. I seem to recall that he took certain liberties with the lyrics of some of the songs, and that he was also an actor – appearing in a number of films of the time. I believe

LOGICAL

JOKE CORNER Another helping of rib-tickling rational funnies... Q: What do you call a man with a car on his head? A: Dead.

Matt Whistler is challenged by Julie-Anne Gilburt to take on the world’s largest pom-pom

W

ith the spirit of celebration still in the air following Brighton and Hove Albion’s recent open-top bus parade (8 May), Matt decided to channel his inner cheerleader for this week's challenge. Julie-Anne Gilburt of Saltdean set the latest task: to stand on the world's largest pom pom, and then add all your clothes to it! Matt was initially befuddled by the first part of the challenge, before he learnt that Brighton Fashion Week (BFW) was already attempting this feat of ingenuity. Work began on the world record attempt to construct a 14ft pom-pom out of ‘recycled’ clothes two weeks ago and culminated in the giant unveiling in Jubilee Square on Friday 6 May.

Matt said: “When I first read about their [BFW] plans, I thought, 'This is going to be a pom pom way beyond the carrying capabilities of even the biggest and strongest cheerleader. Even if Captain Caveman – and it’s worth checking him out on YouTube –turned up disguised as a cheerleader he would still not be able to lift this pom pom.” Matt arrived with Julie-Anne to adjudicate in person, but was surprised by how the giant pom-pom was being created: “All I saw was a big sloppy pile of baggy jumpers tied together in a knot. It looked like lots of malnourished protesters linking arms but then I realised that this colour blast of knitwear was part of a cunning plan

to fluff up one mother pom pom before some crazed looking fellow would run around the mountain with a chainsaw and shave off any excess jumperism to create a mighty ball of fluff,” he said. Upon completion, Matt sped right to the top of the pom pom and found himself overlooking Jubilee Square with lots of eager fashion students watching on. As the spring sunshine broke through Matt decided to go for the second part of the challenge: “With discarded jumpers and static overheating me, I decided to

shake off a couple of garments. ‘OK, here goes’, I thought, ‘Well, it’s not exactly Marilyn Monroe jumping out of a cake but what the hell’. Let’s face it, it’s not every day you get to stand up with a lovely sunny breeze balanced on top of the world’s biggest pom pom and admire the world in the buff,” he said. Julie-Anne seemed to enjoy seeing her challenge in action, but just as quickly as Matt succeeded, it all fell apart. “The challenge had been set and I had risen to it,” says Matt. “Well at least until I fell into a gap in the pom pom and suddenly looked like a desperate man caught in a Venus Flytrap!” Set Matt’s next challenge at www.facebook.com/latest7 or www.facebook.com /mattwhistler brighton Words: Richard Hook

12 SNAP SHOTS

Watch out for a forthcoming film about the Brighton Beach Boys on thelatest.tv soon

“ Snap Shots Photographer Diana Frangi captures the faces and places that define our city. This week: Brighton Beach Boys

We’re lucky to have some top class musicians and singers. There are 16 of us on stage including strings, brass, woodwind and all the vocals. Because of the complex production techniques we see the music as an event. Everyone in the band can play at least three instruments; that is how we can make the band sound like it does. It’s a labour of love.

Glen Richardson, Ralph Brown, Rory Cameron and Steve Wrigley of the Brighton Beach Boys performing at St George’s Church in Kemp Town.

Brighton Beach Boys have garnered a reputation as one of the very best tribute bands, bringing alive the sensational songs and harmonies of the immortal West Coast group. Thir new show includes added renditions of Beatles hits. Their show on Friday 27 May will include The Beatles' Abbey Road album and The Brighton Beach Boys' Pop Dreams with songs by Glen Richardson. The next night showcases two all-time great albums: the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds and the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. www.brightonbeachboys.com

A DAME & HER DOG

With the fuss and pomp of the Royal Wedding now over (wasn’t it amazing by the way?) I was reminded the other day of when Lady Diana married Prince Charles. While having an alfresco lunch in the beautiful town of Lewes with friends and kids, I spotted a lady with a tiny dog in her handbag. As a sucker for stroking a small pooch I immediately stopped her and asked the dog’s name – the lady replied in a thick Kiwi accent: “He is called Waka, which is Maori for kayak”. I immediately recognised the accent of the said lady as Dame Kiri Te Kanawa – who famously sang an aria at St Paul’s Cathedral service way back in 1981. Dame Kiri was completely delightful and looked like she obviously knew the area – maybe she lives nearby in Glyndebourne. It would make sense!

popped along to the long awaited launch event of Brighton-based author Simon Toyne’s new book, Sanctus. The book is flying up the hardback fiction charts and is already at number 12 – not bad for a first novel. Also at the launch were actor Emil Anwar and wife Jude, plus Simon’s glamorous wife Kathryn Rayward – the interior designer who was recently on our screens in Cracking Antiques. Kathryn has two new shows in the pipeline. Her and Simon are becoming quite the power couple! Katie Wiener and her hubby, TV eco-designer Oliver Heath, were also at the book launch and are another power couple worth a mention! Me and the girls in the office are having a great time going along to all the fab Artists Open Houses and last Saturday on the Fiveways trail, I came across Katie Weiner displaying her gorgeous bespoke jewellery. Katie lives in Brighton and repurposes beautiful items she sources into lovely bohemian pieces. Pop along every Saturday until 30 May with your inherited items to speak to Katie about what she could do for you. (The Cake House, 37 Cleveland Road, Fiveways).

Dominic West and Paul McGann star in a revival of Butley, a play by Simon Gray that’s as clever as it is laceratingly witty

Dominic West

I

n one of the highlights of the drama programme at this year’s Brighton Festival, Dominic West, star of the hit US drama The Wire, takes the title role in a revival of Simon Gray’s darkly comic Butley. Paul McGann and Penny Downie also star. Butley runs at Theatre Royal Brighton from Wednesday 25 to Saturday 28 May and will transfer to the West End immediately afterwards – so this is an ideal opportunity to see this laceratingly witty play during its short Brighton run.

The play takes place within one day in the life of hard-drinking university academic Ben Butley. Butley, once a charismatic and respected authority on T.S. Eliot, is having a bad day and sets out to make sure everyone else has a worse one. His estranged wife has taken up with the most boring man in London. His beloved protégé has found a new benefactor. And in an unprecedented act of betrayal, even the English department’s resident failure has a book deal. Butley’s trusty arsenal – Paul McGann mischievous irony and gleeful troublemaking – have never failed him yet. Might they finally prove to be weapons of his own tragic self-destruction? Butley premiered in 1971 in Harold Pinter’s award-winning production starring Alan Bates at London’s Criterion Theatre. Pinter commented that he wanted to direct the play because of its “verve and mastery of language”, adding that the central character was “a remarkable creation”. Dominic West played Baltimore detective Jimmy McNulty in five seasons of the highly acclaimed The Wire from 2002 to 2008. His other screen credits include The Devil’s Whore, Centurion and 300. His theatre credits include The Seagull (Old Vic), As You Like It (West End), The Voysey Inheritance (National) Rock ’n’ Roll (West End) and Life Is A Dream (Donmar). Butley also stars Paul McGann, well known from his roles in Withnail and I, and as the eighth Doctor Who. He is joined by Penny Downie, who played opposite David Tennant in the RSC’s production of Hamlet, and also appeared in the 2009 film Invictus. L7 INTERVIEW

OUTSIDE THE BOX In a break from rehearsals for Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead at Chichester Festival Theatre, actor Tim Curry talked to Andrew Kay Are you enjoying rehearsals? I am. It’s such a wonderful play. It’s a very complex play... Yes, and that’s why it’s certainly extending my brain power. Is that something you enjoy? Yes, especially as I live in California, and it’s very easy to slip into a coma there. You can certainly say that it has woken me up. You’re playing The Player, an actor within a play within a play... Yes, and an actor who has fallen on very hard times and is not above a little pimping on the side. You have plenty of experience in those sorts of roles... Yes, I do get asked to do larger than life ones! That must go back to your original starring role in The Rocky Horror Show. But let’s not go back over all that... That’s very kind; most people do because they are beaten into it by sub-editors. You recently did Spamalot. Was that fun? It was enormous fun, and part of the fun was that Eric Idle and I have been friends for some years and had always planned to work together at one point on a film he had written and was going to direct. Eventually we did it live as a kind of radio play with Tracy Ullman and Eddie Izzard. It was great. Spamalot came out of the blue. He called and said ‘look, I’ve got this thing’ and he flew me into New York with David Hyde Pierce, and it was suddenly all on. It did take you back to an all singing, all dancing role... Yes, but probably the last dancing role. In the States do you get cast like so many British actors as villains or comedy? Yes, pretty much, but not always. I had a long conversation with Billy Wilder about this at dinner. He said he thought that Hollywood had gone down hill from the moment they stopped using all the great European actors who had come over after the war. And they weren’t always villains and comics. It is a cliché that you go to a Brit to play a villain. You have to build a catalogue of American roles to be cast any differently. The bad news is that if you are successful in a villainous role it spawns another three. But I do love those roles – they’re always the best written. Do you prefer film or stage? I tend to prefer the one I am doing and sometimes the one I am not doing; when I am finishing this play I will want to see a camera I’m sure. I do less theatre because the commitments are so long. Chichester is just the right length and I’m really looking forward to it. It’s my first time but every actor says it is their favourite place. Is there the opportunity for you to use your comedic talent in this play? It’s a funny part, a funny play, and he has a streak of Max Wall – a vaudeville music hall thread.

Will we see Max Wall? I’m trying all sorts of things. Trevor Nunn the director is getting very bewildered. One thing we have decided is that he isn’t sure where he comes from, with bits of Northern and bits of Cockney. He’s a very enigmatic character and very broad, but also very smart. The play comes out of a strain of English play writing and has echoes of Beckett and Joyce, and there is a lot of word play. There’s a lot of contradictory philosophy in the play but it’s also a rollicking good story. Stoppard’s language is both poetic and complex. is it hard to learn the role? You could say that [laughs]. I’m still carrying the text. The two boys, Samuel Barnett and Jamie Barker, were off the book after 10 days which was humiliating!

“If you are doing theatre all the time, learning a part is like developing an extra muscle – mine is somewhat atrophied”

Are they holding that against you now? Not really. It’s tough if they are, I’ll get there when I get there. I did Stoppard’s Travesties when I was 28 and I went into it in a week. I learnt it in three days locked in a hotel room. I could no more do that now than fly! I’ve always been like this. I like to know what I’m doing on stage as well as knowing the words. As Hamlet would say: fitting the action to the word. If you are doing theatre all the time, learning a part is like developing an extra muscle – mine is somewhat atrophied. But they’re being very kind and very patient. Have you worked with Trevor Nunn before? I haven’t and that was one of the draws, that and Tom Stoppard asking for me. He wanted to do it, and Chichester, but it was sort of stolen by the National Theatre and he’s been grieving ever since. He has the most extraordinary brain and can pick apart a sentence not only for sense of it but for the ideas contained within it. And with extraordinary precision. And yet he has a wonderful sense of humour and movement. Have you played much real Shakespeare? I really haven’t. I was the third son of Titus Andronicus who was the first to die in a production at the Roundhouse. Are there any great roles you would like to play? I do want to play Malvolio. I wanted to do it for Peter Hall but couldn’t because of another contract which didn’t happen and that made me furious. And there are still some restoration comedies that I would love to do.

Are there any roles you really regret having played? God, yes! [laughs] You know, sometimes needs must. I certainly regret doing a film called Congo. I was really very bad in it, I won a Razzy award for one of the worst performances of the year – and I richly deserved it too. What have you got lined up after Chichester? There’s a TV series in the USA by Bill Condon. I hope that will happen. And playing an American? If I want him to be. I’ve always depended on other mavericks to employ me, somewhat outside the box. Do you see yourself as being outside the box? I do rather. I don’t know why; I’ve played a huge range of parts. Maybe it’s stupid of me. Do you think it might go back to the role we’re not talking about? Maybe. Stephen Frears was the first person to employ me after Rocky for Three Men In A Boat. It was just after Rocky had died in New York and I was sitting in my hotel room with a bottle of vodka and sending out for submarine sandwiches. And I asked him if he thought I could play that and he said that after Frankfurter I could play anything. It was a great leap of faith. L7 Sport Up the Albion! Mark Brailsford on Spurs, Harry Redknapp, new signings, & his fantasy football wish list Now that the League One trophy has been safely placed in the boardroom cabinet after surviving the open top bus parade without being run over by the bus, thoughts turn to Albion’s close season signings. I will be keeping an eye on this for the summer and reporting back intermittently on the comings and goings as they happen. The season may be over but advanced planning for the new season in the Championship has already started. We already know that Chris Wood, Gary Hart, Chris Holdroyd, Radostin Kishishev, Cristian Baz and Agustin Battipiedi will not be seen in an Albion shirt again and this amounts to a bit of a clear“I hope The Albion out, which is very promising for do sign Will Albion fans, if a little sad. All the players named in the Hoskins – there is list above are all clearly surplus to requirements in Gus Poyet's something of the eyes and few Albion fans would disagree. The inevitable rumours Ward about him” have begun to circulate. At the Notts County away game the pubs and bars lining the canal were full of Albion fans deliberating the likely signings. There were many 'friends of friends' with inside information, most of which was clearly wishful thinking. But how much fun it was to be playing a plausible version of fantasy football about The Seagulls! Here’s a fantasy football wish list from us here: In goal: David James; defenders: Chris Smalling (on loan Man Utd), Jonathan Woodgate (Spurs); midfield: David Beckham (assistant player and additional coach); Forwards: Kazenga LuaLua and Michael Owen. What a line up! Those names were banded around in Nottingham at Albion’s last match up in Nottingham... Who knows what calibre of player The Albion could attract next season. One thing is clear, with the new stadium, money available for new signings, and a manager who likes the game to be played properly, there will be a liberal use of the loan system for ‘window to window’ loans from big Premier League teams to add to the mix. I have one realistic hope though and that is that The Albion do sign Will Hoskins from Bristol Rovers – there is something of the Ward about him. The very first match at The Amex has already been confirmed as the Sussex Senior Cup final for which the development squad has been pencilled. At the open top bus parade Tony Bloom announced The Seagulls’ opponents for the big pre-season friendly: Tottenham Hotspur! The match against Spurs on 30 July will be the first opportunity to see the new stadium in all its glory. Although it does mean that some fans who have booked summer holidays around the first match on 6 August (subject to TV demands) may have been caught out by the date if they have booked a holiday that previous week. As to who The Albion will play on that first weekend of the season, we should know which team gets the honour when the fixtures come out in the middle of June. If you are going to make a beeline for Falmer on 30 July, Spurs will be a fine team for the first friendly match. Spurs are a team with a tradition of playing good football that should complement Gus Poyet’s way of playing. With his links to the club it will also be a special day for Poyet, a team some say he may well manage in the future, especially if Harry Rednapp gets the England job, which looks like his next stop on the managerial merry-go-round. If that happens, we may then be in the realm of picking a fantasy manager. Let’s hope that Poyet sticks around for a long while yet though, as it is possible that within a couple of seasons, The Albion could be knocking on the door of the Premier League, which will be quite a feather in Gus Poyet’s cap.

Geeks-on-Wheels Jamie Shaw of Geeks-on-Wheels knows what’s new in computerland Microsoft purchase Skype? Microsoft is close to completing a deal to acquire Skype, beating out other suitors thought to include Google and Facebook. The Wall Street Journal reported that Microsoft was set to pay between $7 and $8 billion for the cross-platform voice and video chat service. All Things Digital went further to report the deal is “actually done” at $8.5 billion and will be announced shortly. Skype has been a loss making business but has achieved a good deal of success in gaining traction not just on desktop computers but increasingly on mobile devices also. The firm had previously been expected to file for a public offering this year. eBay bought Skype for $2.6 billion in 2005 only to sell 70 per cent of the firm to private investors four years later. The $8 billion will also be the largest acquisition Microsoft has ever undertaken. iPad 2 fine Apple has paid the equivalent of £1,835 to a man in Beijing who was reportedly injured during a scuffle which broke out as crowds gathered to get hold of the iPad 2 and white iPhone. Apple claims its employees acted in self-defence as a mini-riot broke out outside the flagship shop in Beijing. Apparently the store was closed as rowdy Apple fans smashed windows to get hold of the much sought-after gizmos. The Chinese state press asserts that the store was rushed by the angry crowd after it witnessed an Apple employee push and beat people suspected of jumping the queue. Police mediated in the ensuing litigation, which saw Ding Wencheng, 27, receive the compensation. “The Apple Store Sanlitun was closed for several hours on Saturday after a group outside the store became unruly,” Apple spokeswoman Carolyn Wu said in a statement. “The store team acted to protect themselves and our customers by closing the doors and preventing the group from entering. The safety of our customers and employees is our top priority.”

McAfee Cloud security McAfee has released a new security platform which secures all content and data traffic moving between an organisation and the Cloud. The Cloud Security Platform is designed to secure all inbound and outbound email, web and identity traffic through integrated modular solutions. While the product is one platform, it is broken into several modules depending on your requirements. Apple tracking update Apple has released an iOS update which introduces the promised changes to location tracking issues exposed by security searchers. The update follows a storm of controversy around revelations that iOS devices were holding as much as a year’s worth of location data on the affected devices and that the information was not only easily accessible but automatically backed up when syncing with a host computer via iTunes. The iOS 4.3.3 update, available for the iPhone 4, 3GS and both first and second generation iPad tablets, has now reduced the amount of data collected to just a week. The indefinite storage of the previous version has been described by Apple as a ‘bug’. The new iOS update will now not back up the cache via iTunes and will delete the file altogether when Location Services are disabled on the phone. Google music Google is expected to announce a service that will allow users to upload music to the company’s servers and then stream it to their computers or Android smartphones. Similar to the cloudbased service announced by Amazon in March, the service will be dubbed ‘Music Beta’. According to reports, the announcement was brought forward after Amazon’s launch, but doesn’t include options such as sharing music or buying songs because such features would require licences from music firms.

ANDREW KAY’S FOOD & DRINK

Food & Drink Andrew Kay gets retro crazy at Residence pop-up restaurant at City College

Retro delights W

hat’s not to like about the food of the ‘70s? After 40 years of food fashions that embraced the minimal portions of nouvelle cuisine – a habit that in some establishments lives on – the big, brash and bold food of the era that brought us disco is well worth revisiting. Residence is a pop-up restaurant doing exactly that and “There was no for three weeks only. They were here last year, based in the Gallery disappointment either: Restaurant at Brighton’s City we got flames and College, utilising the team of staff and students there, and it was a perfect syrupy huge sell-out success. Now they’re back for a second season... pancakes with Mr R and I joined a party on the first Saturday, breaking my rule lashings of butter and of not going along in the ‘settling cointreau. Yummy!” in period’. But with only a threeweek window of opportunity, there was no time to lose. Despite it being lunchtime we kicked off with cocktails that were wittily named after ‘70s films. A jug of Apocalypse Now came with popping candy on the side but I much preferred my Dirty Harry Martini. The menu is full of old friends, so many that choosing was a problem and even involved some last minute lurches from dish to dish. I was pretty sure I wanted the avocado and prawns but the maitre d’ bowled a curve ball and I moved to the scotch egg on the promise of home-made salad cream, and so did Mr R. I anxiously watched smoked salmon being carved at the table and a fine avocado and prawn salad arrive, but when our scotch eggs arrived we were not disappointed. The meat case was excellently seasoned, the egg soft and runny, but the glory was a very fine tomato chutney and delicious salad cream. Main courses were equally delicious. Mr R enjoyed a chicken kiev and cheesy mash but felt there could have been more of a garlic butter presence at its centre. The mash was fantastic though and it was a proper plate of tasty food. I too was tempted by the chicken but again swerved to catch the confit duck with orange sauce and dauphinoise potatoes. To use confit duck with the retro sauce was a great idea. The confit duck was excellent, not too heavily seasoned, and the crispy skin worked well with the bitter orange sauce that was perfectly the right side of sweet. The potatoes were sublime, as good as a gratin dauphinoise gets. Around our table faces were smiling, not simply buoyed by the great wines chosen by Mr Henry Butler, but because the food was tasty, satisfying and fun, and there was plenty of it. A side dish of creamed spinach also added to my delight as did some suitable retro garlic bread. The restaurant has also been furnished and decorated in period style, with great furniture and paintings to set the mood. The mood was further enhanced

by the music of the era, but at a level that was enjoyable rather than intrusive. So on to puddings: Mr R loved his baked Alaska as did others, the profiteroles were another popular choice but for me there only one option... Crêpe suzettes tick all the boxes but mostly because they require some table side theatre in the form of the chafing dish. It’s an almost lost art so it was great to see it here in a place teaching restaurant skills. There was no disappointment either: we got flames and perfect syrupy pancakes with lashings of butter and cointreau. Yummy! Coffee was delayed as Mr Butler produced a trio of ports for us to taste and we finally left late in the afternoon. There are just under two weeks left to enjoy this delight so do whatever you can to get a table, booking will be essential. With lunch at £12.50 for three courses and £16.50 at dinner it is brilliant value. Residence Pop-up Restaurant, Whitecross Street, Brighton, BN1 4FA, 07825 508 083. light bites Save Saltdean Lido

You may well ask why I have put this here so I will be honest. I love Saltdean Lido. I love lidos in general, from Venice to Tooting Bec, and I would greatly mourn the loss of yet another of our fabulous swimming pools and a stunning piece of Art Deco architecture. The Save Saltdean Lido campaign has organised a fun day to raise not only funds but also awareness of what is happening and also the immense and as yet untapped potential that is currently under threat. The day will have a wide range of events for grown ups, and grown downs but there will be – and here is the justification – a strong food element to the event with lots of delicious local ales

and food market. The event is being supported by lots of local businesses and also by the Brighton & Hove Food & Drink Festival. If you care about the future of our modern architectural heritage and want to support it by having a fun day out with friends and family then go along to the Oval Park behind Saltdean Lido on Saturday 4 June from 11am to 4pm and join in the fun.

Take the plunge Dive right in, the water’s fine... you’re never too old to learn to swim, writes Zara Baker

W

hen film director Rowan Joffe came down to Brighton (and Eastbourne) to film the remake of Brighton Rock, he said that as a Londoner the biggest shock was coming to the coast and realising the island we are living on is forever shrinking. For those of us who do live in Sussex, cliff erosion is not something we dwell on, but with the sea on our doorstep, water safety is one thing to think about. With unpredictable weather and freezing sea water that looks a lot less desirable than the clear Caribbean seas, many of us are put off doing anything other than tentatively dipping in our toes. You may never have learned to swim, which can be dangerous if you find yourself on the beach caught unawares with the tide coming in and cutting off your access (there are lots of areas along from Brighton Marina eastwards to Newhaven where this is extremely dangerous). But research shows that hundreds of thousands of children leave primary school unable to swim and drowning is the third most common cause of accidental death in people under the age of 16. The government identifies that by the age of 11, children should be able to swim 25 metres and practise different strokes. Treading water fully clothed while being timed is one memory that stays with me from childhood swimming lessons.

“Swimming is a basic skill that could one day save your life” Swimming can take a backseat in the school curriculum though. Difficulty in accessing facilities – hiring the pool, getting the students there etc – being a key reason. Then you get to an age when you are “far too old to learn”. But, like riding a bike, learning to drive, or studying for a degree, it is never too late to learn. Having a fear of water as a child could lead to a phobia later in life that is difficult to overcome. Whatever your age and ability, there are swimming classes available. Some people may be able to swim but wish to learn new strokes or skills to build up their confidence. For adults who have a phobia and are very nervous in the water, Aquaphobics Anonymous may help. “Aquaphobics is a drop-in or six-week course for people over 16 who have a fear of water,” says Jo Maynard of Aquaphobics Anonymous. “It is a 45-minute group session, although I do teach on a one-to-one basis if required. This may lead onto proper swimming lessons in the future with me.” Aquaphobics hold lessons at the Little Dipper Pool in Upper Gardner Street, North Laine, Brighton. “I have taught many people who previously wouldn’t even come out of the changing room,” Jo continues. “They are now enjoying the many benefits swimming can bring. I teach any age, any ability, and I find it so rewarding.” Fitness wise, swimming is great for toning the body and is ideal for stress. Studies show an increase in psychological wellbeing, especially in women, if they swim. It can help combat depression and reduce tension. It’s an effective exercise suitable for all ages, weights and abilities – and really is a sport for all, being excellent during pregnancy too. Being able to swim can also open the door to new, enjoyable hobbies: water skiing, surfing, scuba diving, water polo or aqua-aerobics (OK, you may have to wait till your summer holiday abroad to try some of those, but still...). It may also lead on to you becoming a lifeguard or swimming instructor one day if you learn to love the water. Swimming is a basic skill that could one day save your life – or the lives of others. When you look at it that way, the reasons to dive right in far outweigh any reason not to. DARIO FO’S THE OPEN COUPLE

The number one party venue in Europe’s sexiest city – BRIGHTON!

Written by the acclaimed Italian satirist with his wife Franca Rame, it's of little surprise after seeing this that they are no longer together – but a great shame. Fantastically scripted with sparks that fly and words that semi-maim, Fo actively encourages his work to be played around with by theatre companies to keep them up to date and relevant to the locale, which Something Witty (the production company behind last year’s The Importance Of Being Earnest) has done with delight and subtlety. Performed in the round, the set was minimal but utilised to the full; the staging simple but delightful. The acting was engaging and believable from the off as the volatile couple grappled with each other verbally and physically,

sparring with darts of love, passion and hatred taking turns to lead the dance. This was the mauling of a relationship from the inside as he (with an air of power and the ridiculous akin to a young Malcolm MacDowell) bullies and prompts their relationship into an open status, only to find it less appealing once she embarks upon a new beau. Samuel Dutton was fantastic as the preening, arrogant, jealous husband, and Heather Rayment superb as the hysterical, tempestuous wife. Well done Nicola Haydn for directing a vibrant dramatic comedy that kept its audience rapt from start to finish. I loved it. The Master Mariner, 27 May JJJJJ FR Victoria Nangle

xpensive and highly trumpeted outdoor installations can so often disappoint, but not this extraordinary installation by French outdoor alchemists Compagnie Carabosse. Transforming the already gorgeous inner-city oasis of St Ann’s Well Gardens with fire sculptures, candles, moving metalworks (including lots of swings!), and the odd live performance, the space was meticulously and magically altered, transfixing the huge audiences who, for the most part, couldn't believe their eyes. On the surface, the strangely subdued health and safety aspect was a surprise, but acted as a strong reminder that yes, we know fire is hot and dangerous – so, don't treat us like idiots! But what the largely fire-based installation was ultimately trying to say is, of course, open to interpretation, but like the best abstracts it invited everyone to partake and enjoy it in any way they wished, almost invariably positively. This event will live long in the memory... Jeff Hemmings

THE LADY BOYS OF BANGKOK

The Lady Boys have got it going on. With loud pumping pop tunes that had all the sexy ladies (and ladies they were) struttin’ their stuff, fabulous outfit changes and cheeky choreographed dance moves, the Lady Boys sure know how to shake it. They had us cheering, laughing and dancing, and the energy in the tent was truly eclectic with the audience loving every minute. There was just the right amount of audience interaction and you could tell the Lady Boys were having the time of their lives too. A fabulous night out; Lady Boys, you sure know how to put on a show. CHOUF OUCHOUF

What a thrillingly exuberant and unpretentious way to start my festival. This North African troupe of acrobatic performers delivered a thrilling and witty entertainment that delighted the audience from beginning to end, one moment provoking gasps of excitement, the next fits of giggles. Cleverly staged, it bridged the gap between circus and ballet with no pretensions, artistry meeting with athleticism in a way that put a smile on every face in the room. A word too about a clever set that was a major player in the success of this show and for the music and soundscape too. Corn Exchange, Brighton Dome, 7 May JJJJJ BF Andrew Kay Circa

There is a clear uncluttered beauty to this energetic Australian troupe of performers. The athleticism and the skills are undeniable, but the deadpan delivery elevates the experience beyond the usual clichés of physical theatre and contemporary circus. Breathtaking feats were balanced with gentle humour, the lighting was effectively simplistic, the costumes plain and the lack of set, except for an occasional rope or hoop, allowed the masterful use of their bodies within space and the extension of physical endurance to be the real core of this and, as a consequence, the star of the show. Ensembles don’t get much more thrilling than this. Theatre Royal Brighton, 10 May JJJJJ BF Andrew Kay

FIDELIO

Beethoven’s only opera was given a rousing performance that had the audience delighted. The Orchestra Of The Age Of Enlightenment were thunderingly good under the baton of Adam Fischer, and a fine ensemble of soloists – one standing in at the last moment – were in fine voice too. The Festival Chorus delivered, as always, and the whole evening was superb but for two minor doubts. I have to confess that I like my opera staged and missed the settings, costumes and acting. Secondly, the narrator, who was good almost throughout, for me spoiled things with a slightly garbled and dare I say it camp summary of the denouement that took away from the beauty of the finale. We all know that opera stories are silly; we just didn’t need it at that moment. Otherwise, a first class evening. Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, 8 May JJJJJ BF Andrew Kay

New World Order

Clever as it is to set these plays of conflict, power and oppression in a government building, and the company say they want more for their audience than to sit in the dark and watch, this was nevertheless at its best in sections where one was able to sit and watch intently. Notably Pinter’s 1984 play One For The Road, set in a private committee room. “One has to be so scrupulous about language”, Nicolas, the interrogator says, and it is precisely Pinter's attention to the exactness of language which can get lost in other parts of the production. Master of the theatrical pause, Pinter always allows space for the audience to think for themselves and at time this production seemed to fill all that space for us. Did all five pieces work together as a whole? Not entirely. Is it worth seeing? Certainly, particularly for the wonderful Hugh Ross as Minister/Nicolas. It’s another week at the top of the chart for the versatile, well musicallytravelled electro-pop singersongwriter Panos Christofi with ‘Satin Doll’. Another act maintaining their chart position is funk-rock outfit Fresh Like Dexie with ‘Electric Summer’ at two as there’s a surprise re-entry from one of Brighton’s best bands at three, the sadly defunct screamy indie rockers My Device with ‘Uh!’. The campaign to get them to reform starts here. Meanwhile, completing this week’s top five, we have melancholy soul diva Julia Fitness with ‘Over Love’ at four and the ‘90s grunge sound of Iolatwist’s ‘Pretty’ taking this week’s number five spot.

STAGE: FESTIVAL FRENZY As Brighton Festival powers to a close Chichester Festival Theatre is full steam ahead Sir Ian Mckellen

F

or those of us who still have an appetite for all things theatrical, Chichester’s 2011 season is now in full flow. Following massively successful seasons over the last few years with an amazing number of productions transferring to the west end, CFT has hit its stride and found what is clearly a winning formula. This year’s season promises to be no exception with a clever balance of crowd-pleasing entertainments and thought provoking drama, all delivered with the usual sense of style and often a twist. Musicals have certainly become the highlight over the last few years and this year we have three to choose from. Already running is She Loves Me. A witty, warm-hearted romantic comedy, She Loves Me is the story of Georg and Amalia, lovelorn assistants in a 1930s parfumerie. Forever squabbling by day, they secretly find comfort in the passionate but anonymous love letters they write by night, both unaware that each is the other’s correspondent. This production is directed by Stephen Mear. Next out: the classic Singing In The Rain. Expect an all singin’, all dancin’, Hollywood romp of an follow me on twitter

evening and there will be showers on stage; Chichester are good at that. The final musical of the season is the splendid Sweeney Todd, Stephen Sondheim’s dark and brooding study of the Fleet Street barber’s murderous revenge on all humanity. Michael Ball says this is a role he has long wanted to play and also let slip that Sondheim himself will be here during rehearsals. Ball is joined on stage by Imelda Staunton who will play Mrs Lovett, a darkly comedic role with some of Sondheim’s most challenging singing. This will be a guaranteed sell out so booking early will be essential. Chichester always manages to draw stars and this year has plenty. Michael Ball and Imelda staunton join a list that includes Sir Ian McKellen, and Tim Curry has recently been announced to appear in the Tom Stoppard favourite Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are

Dead. Curry came to most people’s attention playing Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Show and subsequent film adaptation, but he has continued to have a wide and varied career in both film and stage. Recently he played King Arthur in the Monty Python musical Spamalot, both on Broadway and in the West End. In the Stoppard play he takes the role of The Player. The stars continue with Top Girls, Caryl Churchill’s classic in which top girls from history attend a dinner party. The cast includes Stella Gonet and Suranne Jones who after several stunning years in Coronation Street has gone on to prove that she is equally well equipped to handle serious drama. Ian McKellen is joined by Michael Pennington for the world premiere of The Syndicate in a new version of Eduardo De Filipo’s black comedy of respectable Naples society as it clashes with the seamier underworld. Howie Gelb’s Giant Sand have been making some of the finest and yet skewed post-hardcore sounds that have significantly influenced the current generation of Americana players such as M Ward, Bon Iver and, of course, Devon Sproule. Since her breakthrough album of 2007, Keep Your Silver Shined, Sproule's generally sparkling and uplifting songs have shined very brightly, in part thanks to her highly compelling live performances. MUSIC: LEE 'SCRATCH' PERRY The crazy dubmeister aka The Upsetter has played in Brighton many times over the years, including legendary performances at the old Essential Festival. Despite his advancing years there seems no letting up for this producer whose eccentric dubheavy and groove-laden sounds have influenced everyone from Bob Marley to Adrian Sherwood who shares the bill tonight along with Max Romeo. MUSIC: WALLIS BIRD Impassioned and energetic performer, this Irish gal is perhaps best known for her storming cover of ‘Just Can’t Get Enough’. A 5 foot 2 inch bundle of white heat, Bird (for we may call her that!) has acquired a fanbase who just can't get enough of her infectious zest for life. Born left-handed, after losing five fingers in a lawnmower accident (and having four sewn back on again) on her left hand, she became used to playing a right-handed guitar upside-down, which contributes to her unconventional style of playing. Winner of the prestigious Meteor (Irish Brits) as Best Irish Female in 2010. Latest Music Bar, 17 May, 9.30pm, £7

MUSIC: JOHN CALE Jeff Hemmings profiles the Welsh legend.

S

omewhat the unsung hero of British 'pop', John Cale is dangerously close to being viewed a national treasure, an artist who has refused to compromise his art in search of perhaps greater fortune. Last year he was appointed an OBE. Of course, without his stint with the original art-rockers Velvet Underground, we may never have got to properly hear this Welshman, who found his way to New York in 1963 to further his nascent career in music, with his viola his first instrument. It was in that same year he performed with John Cage and others in an 18-hour piano-playing marathon that was the first full-length performance of Erik Satie's Vexations! But it was as a founding member of the Velvet Underground that truly laid the foundations for a musical career that has veered from the musically confrontational and threatening to the quiet, refined and accessible, and always with the beating heart of a thoughtful thinker at its core. Although he only appeared on the first two VU albums, his contributions as a musician, co-writer and occasional vocalist would have secured his place in rock'n'roll history.... but life went on after that, and still does. “The big debate was: is it pretty music or is it the edgier stuff?” says Cale about leaving the band. “It became a headlong collision, it didn't work after a while.” After that, Cale wasn't sure of his direction... “I was clutching at straws, but I thought one of things I could do was produce...” The roll call of musicians he has performed with or produced over the years includes Nick Drake (two tacks on his Bryter Layter album), Terry Riley, The Stooges, Nico, Squeeze, Patti Smith, Sham 69(!), Brain Eno, Suzanne Vega, Siouxie Sioux... the list is long and endless. For such an iconic and influential figure Cale has remained the cold outsider, a loner all the way. Cale spoke no English at all (his Welsh speaking mother taught him that at the beginning) until he was seven years old, and in his 1999 biography, What’s Welsh For Zen, he speaks of everything from the dourness of life in a mining village to being molested as a child at the local church... Three marriages later, Cale has shifted through neo-classical, pastoral, rock'n'roll and electronic influences, plus even a little hip hop in recent years. Cale has said about his music, “the songs are about characters talking about things, so you can make it very different each time you do it depending on the ecology of the character in each song.” For Cale the 70s and 80s, while witnessing some outstanding works including Paris 1919, Music For A New Society and Artificial Intelligence, were a period of prodigious drug use which finally came to an end on the birth of his only child, Eden. “What I was fooled by was thinking that I was working harder than without all that stuff. I didn't find out till I stopped that the floodgates opened... All that time!? What was I doing!?” For the Brighton Festival, guest director Aung San Suu Kyi, the human rights advocate and Nobel Peace Prize winner, has invited Cale to appear with his band for a one-off appearance performing songs to the festival's theme of exile and home. An apt theme for this still restless and yearning rock'n'roll pioneer. John Cale, Monday 23 May, Dome Concert Hall, 8pm £25-10 follow me on twitter

COMEDY: HIGH BROW HILARITY

The Cock & Tail Inn

The Brighton Festival and The Basement collaborate to explain what makes us laugh. And to make us laugh...

COMEDY: THE COCK & TAIL INN The world premiere at the Brighton Fringe of this original comedy play revelling in whodunnit, revisiting 1970s smutty innuendo and the nostalgia of the country pub’s pickled egg. Making the most of the village pub’s status as hub of all activity and magnet to all manner of characters, this tells of a death and a bequest, left to only one of the regulars – but which one is to be decided by the deceased’s stunning daughter. Cripes! The Barcelo Ship Hotel, 18-21, 25-28 May, 7.45pm, £10/8

T

wo shows examining comedy, academically and autobiographically, broadly and personally. This is smart stuff, yet accessible to anyone who’s ever laughed. First up is 10 Ways To Die On Stage from Edward Rapley. Utilising ‘a landscape of balloons and paddling pools, childhood memories and adult loss’, there are many ways to die on stage and to go through just ten of them promises colour, creativity and a touching personal way that manages to relate to both the individual and to the entire audience. Rapley is a Basement supported artist, testifying to the value of such a programme in allowing unique and interesting ideas to flourish. Second is The Art Of Laughter, from Jos Houbon, an already critically acclaimed one-man show questioning whether we as an audience have a choice as to whether to laugh or not. Houben is a founder member of Theatre de Complicité, a long-time collaborator with The Right Size, the duo behind the West End smash The Play What I Wrote, and now a self-styled comedy academic. Leaving the performance as an ‘open-source show’, he feeds from what makes others laugh, deconstructs it... and keeps making others laugh. There’s a chance to see both shows on two dates, or just see one if that’s all that tickles your fancy. This is a great opportunity to see a wonderful comedy treat from the ever-valued Brighton Festival. 10 Ways To Die On Stage – Edward Rapley (7.30pm, £10), The Art Of Laughter – Jos Houben (9pm, £15) 18/19 May, The Basement, 01273 709709, www.thebasement.uk.com, www.brightonfestival.org follow me on twitter latestvicky

ack’s back! Captain Jack Sparrow, to be precise, and he’s left those pesky lovebirds Will and Elizabeth from the trilogy to their own myth and taken up with some new friends and morally ambiguous shipmates. On this treacherous journey Jack crosses paths with old flame Angelica (Penelope Cruz) and a quest to find the fountain of youth. Is he in love, in lust or in trouble? Possibly – probably – all three. And he’s got his old foe Blackbeard (Ian McShane) hot on his tail too. Not sure which return from the past scares him more, there’s also the sight of old pal Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) plotting away and able seaman Gibbs (Kevin McNally) only one hangover away from the abyss at any time, but otherwise a great help to Captain Jack Sparrow. With other cast members mentioned including Judi Dench, Richard Griffiths, Roger Allam, and of course the return of Keith Richards as Sparrow’s dear old dad, this looks like more of the same adventures on the high seas, without too much introspection but lots of great stunts, effects and fabulous quips. Summer blockbusters start here. Released 18 May Showing at Odeon and Cineworld

friday 20 Dirk Gently BBC2, 9pm Another chance to catch Douglas Adams’ last hero, the determinedly holistic Dirk Gently, heading up his own detective agency. Underhand, manipulative and an utter shambles but rather annoyingly brilliant, this stars Stephen Mangan as the gently comedic hero investigating a lost cat and a massive explosion.

The Graham Norton Show BBC1, 10.35pm Our Graham is always loads of extra fun when he’s bamboozling Americans with his unorthodox interview technique. This week joining him on the odd shaped couch are rap legend Snoop Dogg, Oscar-winning actor Cuba Gooding Jnr, supermodel Elle Macpherson (Aussie) and Cee Lo Green. Whoops of enjoyment.

Young, Rich And House Hunting BBC3, 10.30pm Such. Lovely. Homes. Really, never mind the posh boys and girls and their utter lack of contact with reality, these homes are a delight to explore with the teenagers cheering at walk-in closets and roof terrace views. Fantasy house hunting with a truly decadent edge.

monday 23 Dispatches: The Truth About Your Dentist Channel 4, 8pm Less scary, more empowering is this Dispatches investigation headed by Sam Lister. Looking at our rights to NHS treatment and how some dentists deliberately muddy these, as well as the neglect of our children’s teeth and how cost-cutting is seeing some work outsourced abroad.

Never Mind The Buzzcocks BBC2, 10pm More anarchic pop fun from the quiz that doesn’t really cares who wins so long as everyone has fun playing. Joining team captains Noel Fielding and Phill Jupitus is guest host Catherine Tate, plus guests Howard Marks, Badly Drawn Boy, Katy Wix and Tulisa Contostavlos. It’s always ace with an N-Dubz in the place!

Made In Chelsea E4, 10pm Hurrah! Let’s all go on a country shoot! So says Hugo and promptly invites all of his pals for a day in the country. It’s almost like stepping into a Jane Austen novel. Except a bit more daring as Funda confronts Caggie about her feelings for Spencer and Millie sets her sights on Hugo, despite Rosie’s interest. Rah!
