Brighton Lights Episode 42 – Pride special Brighton Lights 42 sees Guy Lloyd do Pride 2012 with a little help in Preston Park and on the parade from Alex Turchyn. As we go to press Andy Nicholls’ film has already been watched by a lot of people and the reason I think is that it encapsulates perfectly the two sides of Pride: the political, emotionally delivered by Peter Tatchell and the party creatively thrown by Freemasons and Fatboy Slim and the packed Wild Fruit Dance Tent, the Dame Edna Experience and Legends Cabaret Tent. The glamour and the humour is represented by cabaret star Davina Sparkle while Nicky Mitchell and friends relay the story of women and Pride from The Women’s Performance Tent. Caroline Lucas MP, our mayor Cllr Bill Randall, and council leader Cllr Jason Kitcat add their support and it’s official, Caroline raves! For the first time Pride 2012 was streamed live on internet TV across the world and I'm proud that with Pride TV and Brian Noonan we played a part in that. BUSIEST ROADS IN BRIGHTON
North Street in Brighton is due to be closed to traffic next Tuesday and Wednesday (18 and 19 September). The road is one of the busiest in Brighton but the council says that it is in urgent need of repair. The surface deteriorated so badly recently that Brighton and Hove Buses were diverted from what is a key route. The council said that the road would close from 7am on Tuesday and added, “The council apologises in advance for the inevitable disruption this will bring, but these works are for essential safety maintenance on one of the city’s most well-used routes and bus corridors and it is not possible to carry them out without closing the road.” Officials said that they were talking to businesses in the street to let them know about the works and liaising with bus companies to set up alternative routes. The road has been dug up a number of times in recent years. The council said that it was holding talks “with other agencies to find a long-term solution”.
■ MINISTER TO HELP CELEBRATE BRIGHTON’S DIGITAL SUCCESS A House of Commons reception is being held to celebrate the creative and digital sectors in Brighton and Hove today (Tuesday). Ed Vaizey, the Minister for Culture, Communications and Creative Industries, is expected to attend. The lunchtime reception is being hosted by Caroline Lucas, the Green MP for Brighton Pavilion (above), and is sponsored by Wired Sussex and the Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP). It coincides with the Brighton Digital Festival which takes place throughout September. More than 100 events are scheduled. One event taking place on Wednesday 12 September is Kids’ Code Club. The workshop is designed to show children aged 6 to 16 how to programme a computer using a free tool called Scratch. Parents are also welcome at the event which runs from 4.30pm to 6.30pm at the Dyke Road offices of Cogapp, the digital marketing firm. More information can be found at 2012.brightondigitalfestival.co.uk
■ MENCAP REPORTS BIG SURGE IN CALLS TO CHARITY’S HELPLINE Mencap has reported a 139 per cent surge in calls to its helplines from people with a learning disability and their families. Most of the calls were about community care assessments, personal budget advice and whether people were eligible for help and support. Welfare reforms and rule changes are prompting concern among many of the callers. Mencap said that it had merged its helplines into one freephone helpline to provide information on services which are available to people with a learning disability. The number is 0808 808 1111. Advice is available on employment and housing support, as well as a range of issues including social care, abuse, bullying and health. And specialist helpline advisers can also offer guidance on personal budgets and support plans. The charity’s office in Brighton and Hove said that an estimated 5,320 people in the city have a learning disability. More than 800 receive support from Brighton and Hove City Council to help them live as independently as possible, with more than 250 living in residential care homes.

Charlotte Fane has something to sing about – and she’s sharing her songs with a growing number of other people. Frank le Duc reports
S
ix weeks before music teacher Charlotte Fane-Barnett was due to get married the school where she taught closed down and she was left without a job. She said, “I didn’t know what I was going to do. But one of my friends is a Rock Choir leader and she was always saying how much she enjoyed it.” Charlotte looked into it and before long she went along to an interview and an audition and shortly after her wedding she was running a Rock Choir of her own. In fact, she runs six Rock Choir sessions a week – two at Varndean in Brighton, two in Haywards Heath at Clair Hall, one in Burgess Hill at St Wilfrid’s Catholic Church and one, near her home in Hove, at the United Reformed Church on Blatchington Road. In Brighton and Hove alone, about 90 to 100 singers have signed up. Charlotte, 31, had been a singing and piano teacher as well as taking music lessons at The Fold school in Hove before it closed. And she still teaches when she’s not running Rock Choir sessions. Her background obviously helps as she brings all sorts of people together to make music and have fun. Rock Choir started just six years ago and has become something of a phenomenon. Its popularity has grown even more since it was the subject of three hour-long television programmes on ITV1 last year. The documentary followed Rock Choir members as they worked towards a huge joint concert at Wembley. At the risk of ‘You’re So Vain’. ove MP Mike Weatherley successfully seeing his efforts to criminalise squatting come to fruition brought wry smiles from some readers. They emailed pointing out that Baron Bassam of Brighton would have found himself facing hefty fines or even time behind bars had the legislation been law some years ago. Lord Bassam was a squatter during his early years in Brighton, where he founded the Squatters Union which campaigned for the rights of squatters to accommodate empty properties and improve the conditions of the squats. Sussex Police were among the first forces to act when the legislation came into force this month when they raided a squat in London Road and arrested three men. Squatters now face a maximum £5,000 fine, six months in jail, or both. Jonathan said, “I know quite a few of our guests were excited to hear there would be a cricket match on at the same time and I think it makes our wedding truly unique.” Brighton and Hove has become the first area in Sussex to gain a prestigious award for the quality of its school meals. One 17 year old was arrested for allegedly raping an under 16-year-old girl in a public place. The city’s top cop Chief Supt Graham Bartlett said, “Given the sheer size of the event, I would say that the day was a great success and the vast majority of people had a wonderful weekend.” One Withdean resident emailed, “Those who had to clean up the mess afterwards didn’t have such a wonderful time.” The Only Way Is Essex former ‘star’ Lauren Goodger was spotted with chums having her nails done and doing a bit of retail therapy in The Lanes, Brighton, and just up the road, by the Clock Tower, Peter Andre opened his new coffee shop, New York Coffee Club. In the city we have more people employed in the creative and cultural sector than the national average, and the two strongest areas are digital design and music, and visual and performing arts. The most innovative events and installations combine these to celebrate creativity and progress. For example, the opening event involved the audience triggering a digital firework display projected onto Jubilee Library. There’s also a

NHS was founded, the idea was to provide free universal healthcare for all at the point of need and regardless of the means to pay. The service was also supposed to be publicly funded, publicly provided and publicly accountable with local democratic control. One retired GP said, “The latest reforms have been much criticised for making it easier for private providers to undermine the NHS – or compete with it, if you prefer. But they have taken at least a modest step in the direction of local accountability and democratic control by giving elected councillors more of a say. “Some of us seasoned professionals won’t always welcome politicians poking their noses into our business. And each practice is a private business, contracted to the NHS. We might well ask what politicians know about clinical decision-making. Nevertheless, we spend public money and a great deal of trust is reposed in us. And policy-makers have always set priorities, one way or another. “We have our own interests and we haven’t always been terribly responsive to the voice of the patient. There is a power imbalance in the doctor-patient relationship. It’s not unreasonable, however, to listen to those who have been elected and to open a dialogue with them. In addition, I understand that an increasing number of practices are establishing patient groups. “In Brighton and Hove, for instance, politicians might ask practices to make a better fist of persuading parents to immunise their children. And practices, in turn, might highlight areas where we believe more resources would influence health outcomes for the better. We have, as a profession, been a little shy of public debate, of explaining why we do what we do and of practising accountably.”
A FINITE POT
the bigissue
Good practice Brighton and Hove’s family doctors have bucked the trend as fewer patients are complaining. Frank le Duc reports
T
he number of complaints about family doctors has risen steadily over the past few years. Many trace the rise to the new GP contract – a national agreement reached in 2004. The new contract for GPs (general practitioners) changed the way that care is provided out of hours – at nights and weekends. It has coincided with a growing pressure on hospital accident and emergency (A&E) departments. The most recent figures show that Brighton and Hove has bucked the trend in the latest year for which figures are available. Almost 55,000 people made a written complaint about their family doctor or dentist nationally in 2011-12, up from just under 51,000. Locally the number was 466, down 15 per cent from 551 in 2010-11, after a ten per cent rise the year before. Of those local complaints, 212 were upheld (45 per cent). The numbers were published by the NHS Information Centre in the past fortnight. The main areas of complaint were about clinical matters – delays, misdiagnoses or not referring a patient to a specialist – or communications or attitude. These accounted for more than half the number of complaints received. Others related to practice management and even issues connected with GP premises. When it comes to premises, a spending programme has been under way in Brighton and Hove over the past few years to help those doctors currently working in the worst premises to upgrade or move. With the new Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital – five years old next month – and the proposed £420 million revamp of the Royal Sussex, we should soon have some of the most modern medical facilities in the country.
ACCOUNTABLE AND DEMOCRATIC All this comes at a time when the public finances are being reined in and budgets are coming under greater pressure. And the coalition Government’s reforms are encouraging greater scrutiny of health and wellbeing. When the
“Several surgeries Local politicians will be turning their attention to the performance of referred between family doctors today on Tuesday 11 September at a meeting of the 50 and 100 per cent council’s Health and Wellbeing Overview and Scrutiny Committee at more patients than Hove Town Hall. A report to the committee noted, “The newly a number of others” reformed NHS requires GPs to play a key role as commissioners as well as care providers.” They are doing this through the Brighton and Hove Clinical Commissioning Group. This will assume many of the responsibilities – and staff – of the soon to be abolished primary care trust. Some family doctors have expressed concerns that patients may question whether decisions to refer them to a specialist or prescribe certain medicines are being influenced by their budgets. There is, of course, a finite pot of cash to fund treatments and doctors have long been reminded of budget pressures through audits and guidance. Locally, an organisation called Brighton and Hove Integrated Care Service (BICS) is part of this process. It is staffed by a number of local doctors, carries out benchmarking and provides feedback to practices. In one survey it found that the surgery with the highest rate of referrals sent more than five times as many patients to see a specialist compared with the lowest referrer. If the highest and lowest were excluded, several surgeries referred between 50 and 100 per cent more patients than a number of others. Introducing the survey, Dr Peter Devlin said, “There are wide levels of

variation between individual practices and individual practitioners.” And not all of the 47 surgeries in Brighton and Hove took part in that particular survey. Feedback encourages practices and individual doctors to question whether they might do things differently. Another doctor who used to practise in the area was clear that clinical need trumped questions about cost. He said, “Every doctor is mindful of good practice. Any doctor who breaches professional ethics puts not only their patients at risk but their career. Given that only ten minutes are allotted for a standard consultation, it is perhaps surprising that there aren’t more complaints.”
SCORECARDS The report to councillors echoes Dr Devlin’s phrase, noting that there is a “wide variation in effectiveness and delivery of primary care at an individual practice level”. In February and March 114 practice staff attended nine workshops held to explore a system of scorecards that is being used to assess local practices. Profiles of each practice, scorecards for each practice and patient survey results were provided before the workshops. And those attending were encouraged to share examples of good practice while looking at areas where improvements could be made. An analysis of the scorecards found that there was no particular pattern in terms of locality although practices in West Hove and Portslade tended to be higher scoring. There was no particular pattern in terms of deprivation either although the two lowest scoring practices served parts of Brighton with the highest levels of deprivation. The five lowest scoring practices were all small – as were three of the highest scoring practices. The biggest challenge, according to those attending the workshops, was access – ensuring that patients were able to see a doctor or nurse when they wanted. One GP said that this had been affected here and elsewhere by a growing reluctance to use locums, partly for financial reasons. Other challenges included improving the rate of childhood immunisations, tackling the rise in chlamydia and dealing with growing numbers of patients with mental health problems. Care plans, flu jabs, hypertension and prescribing issues, including the prescribing of benzodiazepines, were also discussed, as was the A&E attendance rate. Action plans were produced where significant challenges were faced. The meeting will barely scratch the surface in terms of the scrutiny of GP performance. But it is likely to pave the way for those who have been elected to work out how best to monitor family doctors across Brighton and Hove. Those elected councillors know that their job is not to second-guess the experts. But they will want clear sight of what’s going well, what the problems are and, where there are problems, to be able to read the prescription.■

North Street: road closure Brighton & Hove City Council will be undertaking temporary repairs to North Street this month due to the deterioration of the road. The repairs
require the road to be closed from 7am, Tuesday 18 September to Wednesday 19 September. The council apologises in advance for the inevitable disruption this will bring, but these works are for essential safety maintenance on one of the city’s most well-used routes and bus corridors and it is not possible to carry them out without closing the road. The council is currently talking to businesses in the street to inform them about the works and is liaising with bus companies to set up diversion routes. It is also engaged in ongoing discussions with other agencies to find a long term solution. Julie Harris, Brighton & Hove Council City Council, via email

A fire-fighter from Brighton who recently returned to the fire service after surviving lung cancer and the removal of most of one lung visited the Amex Stadium to tell Albion boss Gus Poyet his remarkable story. Albion season ticket holder Mark Dahr, 39, from Saltdean collapsed at his home last Christmas after suffering the latest in a line of chest infections and pains in his shoulder. By the time he got to
before. However, this occurrence was far more aggressive and was taking over the remaining healthy part of his right lung. Thankfully Mark is recovering well and although still attending rehab, was able to return parttime to Redwatch, Hove Firestation in May. He plans to return as a full-time fire-fighter in a few months. After reading about Albion in the Community’s Be Clear on Cancer campaign, Mark got in touch with the club’s charity. The campaign aims to increase the number of lung cancer survivors by increasing awareness of the early symptoms particularly a persistent cough that lasts for three weeks or more and encourage people who have symptoms to visit their doctor. The father of one, who used to be manager of Portslade Sports Centre, added, “When I went to
hospital on Boxing Day his right lung had collapsed and specialists had discovered a slow growing carcinoid tumour, a rare form of cancer, which they believe could have been there for up to eight years. Almost eight months on from the events of last Christmas, Mark recalled, “On my last shift before Christmas I felt really ill. A fever had started but the pain had not reached my shoulder so I didn’t think I needed the usual antibiotics. I woke early on Boxing Day and was on the floor in pain. I knew I had to see the doctor but because they were closed I had to go to the hospital, which turned out to be a blessing in disguise.” Mark eventually had an operation to remove most of his right lung in February this year. Lymph nodes were also checked as part of his surgery to stop any potential spread of the cancer. However, within 48 hours he had contracted pneumonia – an illness he had suffered from
meet with them, I looked at one of their leaflets. Although I’d never had a persistent cough, I had experienced the other symptoms such as the chest and shoulder pains and long term tiredness over a number of years. It is really important to go and see your doctor as soon as possible if you have a persistent cough or one of the other symptoms. Getting it checked early can save your life. “Hopefully my story might make people more aware of the early symptoms of lung cancer and prove that you can survive and go back to leading a normal and healthy life.” Albion boss Poyet, who lost his father and grandmother to cancer, has been an active supporter of the campaign. He said, “Mark’s story is incredible and he is a huge inspiration to anyone who has lung cancer. To be able to go back to being a fireman after what he has been through shows amazing determination and courage.”

Mark Brailsford imagines The Albion dream team
Gus backs cancer campaign and Mark’s winning battle
W
here did that come from? You go away for a few days and The Albion sign four first class signings seemingly out of nowhere. One with Premier League goalscoring experience (Stephen Dobbie), his former team mate in Swansea's tiki-taka brigade (Andrea Orlandi) and a classy La Liga midfielder (David Lopez). Oh, and Dean Hammond. Let us first address that surprising return. Those of us who witnessed his, shall we say, enthusiastic display in front of the south stand at Withdean as a Southampton player, are astonished to see him back. This has to be the most surprising signing since Richard Tiltman rolled off the local park and onto the Goldstone pitch, seemingly by accident.
“A local boy made good, no wonder Albion fans took umbrage” However, let us look at the logic. At the time of Hammond's departure he was Albion's rather impressive captain. The club perhaps looked at the money and took a business decision. When Dean moved on though, it was clear there was a Hammond sized hole in the midfield until Crofts arrived for his first stint. A local boy made good, no wonder Albion fans took umbrage. But here he is, with a few people to win over to say the least, but most Albion fans will wish him well. After all, he dreamed of playing for The Albion at Falmer, and if he bangs in a few screamers on the way to the Premier League he will be forgiven. No pressure then. I'd settle for the winner against our friends in the north.

What of the other signings? The set-pieces have been pretty dire when Vicente hasn't been playing, Ryan Harley aside. Orlandi and Lopez are known for their dead ball skills so this may be a significant upgrade in a league so tight that set-pieces could be the difference between the playoffs and finishing tenth. Dobbie is an excellent signing too. His experience will be invaluable. However, none of these are the elusive ‘target’ man sought by Gus Poyet. The loan system is now in play and awareness of how disruptive a one month wonder can be, Poyet will resist signing just any old beanpole. Who knows, it could be one big bluff to lull the rest of the league into thinking The Albion are not as frightening as Barnsley found them to be, and look what happened there. Finally, we come to the departure of crowd favourite Craig Noone. That a much loved player can be moved on without an outcry from the fans speaks volumes for the quality coming into the club these days. But with the way things are going with these returnees (e.g. Crofts and Hammond) who would bet against Dean other former Albion stars returning to Hammond the club? Imagine it: Elliot Bennett, Noone re-signed, a strike partnership of Glenn Murray and Bobby Zamora backed up by CMS (if he isn't a Norwich player by then) and Vicente supplying the ammunition. Stranger things have happened, like re-signing Dean Hammond perhaps? I'd draw the line at Richard Tiltman though.

rt At Five is situated in the heart of Brighton and offers a wide and inspiring selection of original work by both established and emerging artists. The gallery’s aim is to make acquiring art an easy and enjoyable experience in a friendly, informal environment. Art At Five is thrilled to introduce two new artists to the gallery: Liz Chapman and Leslie Whelan. Liz’s unique approach sees her subjects broken down into a riddle of geometry, colour, and repetition. Although not quite pixelated, her fragmented work seamlessly merges into clarity as you step back from the canvas. Her new collection, ‘Anonymous City’, is heavily influenced by her previous career in architecture. Lesley Whelan became Artist in Residence at Birmingham University’s Botanic Garden in 2003, and this has driven her latest body of work. Lesley uses a technique of bevelling into her materials to accentuate the abstracted shapes and lines within nature. Lesley is fascinated by colour and texture, and incorporates these successfully into her style with striking effect. Collections by both artists are now on show at Art At Five. With its cutting edge fashion, Barbara Hulanicki’s iconic Biba label transformed the High Street shopping experience in the 1960s. Here the designer talks to Jeff Hemmings about her Brighton beginnings & being mistaken for Bono’s mother

Cinderella story
Biba opened a branch in Brighton in 1965, at 21 Queen’s Road. “We employed a manageress who lived above the shop, but we hadn’t realised that she was a mobsters’ moll who entertained half the Brighton underworld! I remember somebody ringing and saying: ‘Carol the Arrow is in the shop’ – she used to come in every day – ‘and Phil the Pill, and Carol the Arrow has got an empty pram and is going to fill it with merchandise’. She was a gangster’s moll, a Graham Greene character! Stock was disappearing by the armful, and when a very famous ex-boxer came to see the ‘governor’ [Fitz] in London to demand protection money, we felt we should call it a day.” Over the years Biba moved to bigger premises on a number of occasions, increasing its turnover dramatically in the process and, by 1970, with Dorothy Perkins as a partner, Biba could also be found in Dorothy Perkins stores. Soon after, the Biba brand went overseas, in such iconic stores as Fiorucci in Milan and Bloomingdales in New York. In 1973, Big Biba opened at the Derry & Toms Building, 99-117 Kensington High Street, the sixstorey department store becoming an extraordinary lifestyle shopping experience. Although popular with famous customers, the store was never the exclusive preserve of the rich and famous. Prices were kept deliberately low. But the working relationship between British Land (owners of Dorothy Perkins at the time) and Barbara and Fitz deteriorated badly, and in October 1974 Barbara and Fitz walked away from Biba. But Barbara never stood still: In 1980 she opened a series of clothing boutiques and launched a make-up line, all under her own name. She also briefly returned to fashion illustration to draw Sarah Ferguson’s wedding dress for the London newspapers. Hulanicki arrived in Miami Beach in 1987 where she reinvented herself as a designer of interiors and exteriors, single-handedly re-conceiving Miami Beach’s then re-emerging Art Deco District. From 1990 to 2006, Hulanicki has twice reconceived major buildings in Miami, all for Chris Blackwell, owner of Island Records, and his Island Outpost Group. “It was fun,” Barbara recalls. “That whole district had my stamp on it. With Blackwells it was fantastic; all the rock stars would come! I was once in the lobby and Bono was there hanging out, and somebody came up to interview me, and then suddenly I realised he thought I was Bono’s mother because we wore the same sort of glasses!” More recently, Barbara has gone back to her roots, designing for Topshop and George at Asda. “I’m still working with George, every six weeks a new line – they are very faithful and nice people.” In the New Year’s Honours’ list 2012 Barbara Hulanicki was awarded an OBE for her contribution to British fashion. “When I went to get it, it was wonderful; Prince Charles knew all about Biba. I remember we had Princess Anne come in the shop once, in London. At the time we thought our reputation would be ruined! “I find it frightening and depressing looking back,” Barbara says about the Beyond Biba exhibition opening at Brighton Museum this month. Around 200 exhibits will be displayed, including many famous Biba outfits created over the course of her long career, and her illustrations. “Putting this together has been a very interesting surprise. I think it’s a very English, rags-to-riches thing.” Biba & Beyond: Barbara Hulanicki, Brighton Museum & Art Gallery, Royal Pavilion Gardens, 22 September 2012–14 April 2013.

Jacket, c1973 This jacket with its sharply defined shoulders is a typical Biba silhouette for the period around 1973. This jacket is worn with a skirt and is reminiscent of women’s suits of the 1940s, an era Barbara Hulanicki was particularly fond of for design inspiration.
I Dress, c1967 This tiny cotton mini dress is printed with a psychedelic print in acid colours. The white collar and cuffs were popular for dresses and suits and appeared on garments for a number of the years after this date.

Dress, c1970 A brushed cotton fabric has been printed in an Art Deco print for this dress. Art Deco would influence the later part of Barbara Hulanicki’s designs for Biba. This would culminate in the refurbishment of the Art Deco department store Derry & Toms on Kensington High Street which would become the final Biba shop.
Coat, c1970 This fake fur coat was made in numerous other fabrics including printed striped fabrics and plain cottons. Fake fur was a popular choice for Biba coats and jackets in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and most prominently used as a fake leopard skin.
Dress, c1969 This style of dress was modelled by 14-year-old Judi Bowker and featured in the Telegraph magazine in 1969. This cotton lace dress was bought by Margaret Howe after seeing the article and worn as her wedding dress.
Dress, c1970 This dress is printed with chrysanthemums on a satin weave fabric. Satin fabrics were first used by Barbara Hulanicki in approximately 1969 and would remain popular until the end of her work for Biba in 1974.
Trouser suit, c1969 This trouser suit is made from printed cotton in a floral sprig design in camouflage colours. The cotton for both the jacket and trousers has been padded with quilting.
Trouser suit, c1985 Barbara Hulanicki opened a label under her own name in the mid-1980s and sold her designs from shops in London: one in Regent’s Street and the other in Holland Park. This women’s suit is masculine in design, in keeping with the look of the period.
Dress, c1970 The print of this dress is known as the banana print. It first featured on Biba wallpapers which was sold in the Kensington High Street shop (19691973). The print has since become a Barbara Hulanicki classic and has featured most recently, in 2006, on a wallpaper for Habitat.

n the 1960s a Brighton Art School graduate revolutionised the retail industry through her fashion label, Biba. This autumn you can discover her story at Brighton Museum’s major new exhibition Biba And Beyond: Barbara Hulanicki. Opening on 22 September, the exhibition celebrates all that is Biba – the fashion, the lifestyle and the branding that all helped to define the ’60s as a generation that swung! The exhibition also looks beyond Biba at Barbara Hulanicki’s successful careers in design, fashion illustration and interior design. With loans from major collectors and private individuals the new exhibition will tell her amazing story through fashion, film, illustrations, music, photography, ephemera and the memories and reminiscences of those who shared the experience.
Make-up, c1985 To complement Barbara Hulanicki’s own clothing name label in the 1980s she produced a makeup range. This was sold in her shops as well as nationwide through small, independent shops and outlets.

Rather than the traditional “yours faithfully” or “yours sincerely” one should sign off with the words “in your face”. Oh, and if attaching a Jpeg of a kitten playing the piano or a film clip of a fat person falling down some steps, the words “take a look at this!” should always be in parentheses. Hetty X

Dear Hetty, Due in no small measure to the recent dramatic increase in the price of postage stamps, I have recently purchased a “personal computer” and set up what I believe is called an “email account” as a method of communication. Never having received nor sent an “email” before, I wondered if you could advise me on the correct etiquette when writing one. Do the normal letter-writing rules apply, or are there some other, more modern, guidelines one is supposed to follow? Please advise, as I have no desire to make myself look foolish. Col. ot, hot, hot! Take your most embarrassing moment, feel the moment and intensify it by visualising a million fire crackers travelling through your left ear into your brain, then towards your right ear. You thought it was a walk in the park; complacency and over confidence put you in a dangerous mind-set. Whilst listening to a military drum beat on your MP3, a cocky stride takes you to the destination. The crowd at the venue will be waiting in anticipation; there’s always a thick air and uncertainty that glues everyone together. The previous morning you practise with a small piece, then a bigger piece, then an even bigger piece. You dive into the bath and stick
your high pressure shower head in your gob with gallons of water hurtling past your throat. Emergency services are required but you don’t pick up the phone; you stand tall and salute your chopping board. You can’t afford the luxury of thinking about pain and drop a glass cup on your big toe to prove to yourself that being invisible is key to the success. Only the hardcore pull through; wimps will shrivel and disappear into a puff of patheticness... I’m geared to host the Man Vs Fire event in the Fiery Foods Chilli Festival (FFCF) on Friday 14 September and will be wearing a weighted Trilby to prevent it from shooting up in the air. Toot toot, all aboard! You thought a can of ginger beer had some kick... you thought wrong.
Don’t make me do it, no don’t... Oh go on then!
Warning: do not try this at home. Come and see a fine mixture of funny psychos at the FFCF in the annual chilli-eating competition. They mean business. It’s in Victoria Gardens 14–16 September. On Friday I will be wearing my highaltitude pressure release boots just in case I take off and my feet start expanding. ANDREW KAY’S FOOD & DRINK
Food & Drink Andrew Kay returns to a favourite oriental eatery The Good Friend Chinese Restaurant
Choice cuts M
uch as I love Brighton there are still things, 25 years on, that I miss about London. I miss the markets and the theatres, and I really miss the Chinese restaurants. I know that Brighton has a few, some of which I like a lot. There is much to be said for the stylish food at Gars for instance, delicious every time, in great surroundings and with superb service, too. No, what I miss is pretty basic: the Soho style Chinese with meat hanging in the window and a chef hovering over a steaming cauldron of chicken broth. The thought of it is making my mouth water. The craving for this kind of food always sends me to one place – The Good Friend on Preston Street. Here I find some of those old favourites, and also some new. So when Mr R and Mr L suggested we do Sunday lunch, my craving for the orient steered us back. The Good Friend is a pretty enough restaurant, not a spit-and-sawdust affair, but with none of the pretension of some that I might mention. And the staff are a delight, always welcoming me back as if I am a long lost relative. When I first started going there, back in pre-history, there was a menu of dishes all in oriental characters. I asked what they were and the waiter back then suggested that I might not like them, as they were rather more for Chinese tastes. I persisted, and found several dishes that I liked a lot and one that never fails to put a huge grin on my face. Anyone beginning to wonder if I eschew the delights of popular Cantonese dishes should not worry; I like those too, but in balance. There is a format to going to the Good Friend that involves everyone reading the menu before putting it down and asking me to order. I like that, because I can order my favourites, throw in a few popular choices and hey presto, a feast. So to start it was their salt and pepper squid, which in my view is the best in town, piping hot, tender and liberally sprinkled with fresh chilli, garlic, salt and spring onion. I married this to a plate of ribs, the dry ones which taste great but are a much cleaner way to start a meal. For good measure we had some sesame prawn toast too, and some prawn crackers. I had ordered jasmine tea, but after a few moments spotted the look of disappointment on Mr R’s face and ordered a bottle of house white, which is better than average and very inexpensive by today’s standards. Our table went quiet as we tucked in. For our main course I indulgently ordered my two favourite dishes. I simply love having a plate of the mixed roast meats, the ones hanging in the window and served at room temperature. You can choose three so I went for the char sui sweet glazed pork loin, crispy pork belly and roast duck. The char sui always satisfies that need for sweet and salt, and it was as good as ever. The crispy belly pork was great, the right balance of lean meat and sweet fat and the crackling
21
really crackled. The duck was sublime. The thin skin, all the fat rendered away, was the colour of French polished mahogany, crisp and addictive. The flesh below was sweet and succulent, yielding to the slightest pressure from a chopstick (I think a fork would work equally well, but when in...). To balance this I ordered Mr R’s favourite deep fried chilli beef. It was good, not my favourite as I fail to see what the need for the beef is when it is cut so fine, but the sauce had a pleasing effect and the crunch added texture. A plate of steamed pak choi with garlic always goes down well. It’s amazing how pleasing a simple plate of greens can be when done well and all three of us tucked into this with relish. So finally, to my favourite dish – a braised beef brisket in a hot-pot. I found this years back on the secret menu, and have been enjoying it ever since. Brisket is a pretty cheap cut, but like all cheap cuts, when cooked with skill has more flavour then any fillet steak will ever have. At Good Friend they cook it with star anise, cinnamon and heaven only knows what else to create an unctuous stew that is rib-stickingly good and packed with flavour. You will find a bit of sinew here and there, but you eat around it, and remember that it all adds to the flavour. Simply writing about it makes me want to go back and eat it right this minute. I rank this dish as being up there, perhaps even in my top ten dishes of all time. We had a bowl of steamed rice to eat with our meats, one being quite enough given that I don’t eat that much rice, especially when there is meat to eat, and we almost polished off the lot, just a few scraps here and there had us beaten. How much did this cost? Well, it was a delightfully impressive £77 (£26 a head or thereabouts) for the Latest 7 supports three of us, including service and our wine. I reckon that is pretty good value, especially when you consider how much delicious food we ate. In truth, there was certainly enough for four, perhaps with a little more rice. ROLE MODEL
SANDI TOKSVIG, Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, 1 September 2012 ✪✪✪✪✪
I
n a few all too short hours Sandi Toksvig confirmed her place as one of the great female role models of the modern age – and the funniest too. With little more than a few slides she managed to give the audience a potted history of her life and family, and history is the passion it would seem that drives her most. Born Danish, raised in New York and then exiled to an English girls’ public school it is also clear why she is so fascinated by language. In fact the woman is remarkably academic, well read and articulate and she uses these skills to power her performance. I might add that she does this without ever seeming like she is showing off, it’s all tinged with a self-deprecating modesty that appears to be quite genuine. In a nutshell she is simply adorable. The first half of the evening was dedicated to the foibles of her own life, being a parent, shopping, taking a bus and dealing with the fact that in her role as an entertainer she has become to some extent public property. She also talks about travelling as a woman alone with men, hilarious stuff which had the male members of the audience sniffing their armpits. In the second half she talked about her writing and her new novel ‘Valentine Grey’ from which she read beautifully. Few of us knew that we British had invented internment camps back in the Boer Wars, but there it was, a poignant moment in an evening that balanced fun with well-placed social and political comment. Toksvig is pure gold – I am sure the audience would have sat there and listened for two more hours. Andrew Kay
ELGAR, BRUCH & DVORAK, WORTHING SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, NICOLA BENEDETTI (VIOLIN)
Starting with Elgar’s stirring Froissart Overture, conductor John Gibbons demonstrated his orchestra’s superior quality and the hall’s excellent acoustics. Then came Bruch’s 1st Violin Concerto. Now, does Nicola Benedetti live up to all the hype? Oh yes, and much more. The capacity audience certainly enjoyed “World-class music on your doorstep”, a real treat: impassioned, sensuous and so very musical. I had just about calmed down by the second half, a well-judged performance of Dvorak’s 7th Symphony – any more bounce in the scherzo and we’d have been dancing out of our seats. What a brilliant start to the new season! Coda: Nicola Benedetti also played the same concerto at The Last Night of the Proms on Saturday 8

42ND STREET
I love the concept of a show within a show: it offers the audience a behind the scenes look into the world of show biz, proving the glamour and sparkle we see on show isn’t often the case backstage. Set in 1933 New York during the Great Depression, 42nd Street combined stunning choreography, a large number of set designs and costume changes to fabulous effect. The ‘Shadow Waltz’ used lighting to create a striking number that proves you don’t need the larger theatres in order to make an impact. Marti Webb as Dorothy stole the show with her solo number ‘I Only Have Eyes For You’; Dave Willett as Julian Marsh charmed us the whole way through, and Jessica

I was certainly rooting for her. While other characters’ American accents dipped in and out on occasion, the dancing and timing of the entire ensemble for the finale was spot on. A strong cast and a great show. Congress Theatre, Eastbourne, 4 Sept ✪✪✪✪✪ Zara Baker
APPLES AND EVE
There are a glut of female singer songwriters at the moment, but this debut EP launch for local band Apples & Eve amply demonstrated the skill of front lady Eva Howells, who combines great stage craft with economic and skillful songwriting, a terrifically versatile voice along with an excellent backing band who all make their presence felt, making this as much a band effort as a vehicle for Howells. Musically, it’s a mixed palette that veers towards the darker end of the spectrum, helped along by the slightly Balkan and European feel of the rhythms and beats that befit a more cabaret style setting. Howells is just 20, and there’s plenty of promise here. Komedia, 5 Sept 2012 ✪✪✪✪✪ Jeff Hemmings

Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, 25-26 Apr 2014, £25, 01273 709709 www.brightondome.org Make a note of the date – this is for 2014, so that’s the year after next. The British Comedy Award's Queen of Comedy Sarah Millican is giving up the party scene (Ann Summers), easing off on the drinking (fizzy pop equals wealthy dentists) and is settling down (taking her bra off). Determined to put down some roots, she now has a cat (furry baby) and even a tree (she has a lot of mugs).
After a period of not attending Brighton Pride in Preston Park, this year I chose to return. My absence was political. I was hating the politics, but all that seems to have been resolved, money is making its way to charities and the core of what Pride always was; political and social campaigning are back and it is all the better for that. Ticketing, contentious as it has been, does mean that it feels safer and by Sunday the park was cleaner than ever before at that stage. On the day I had fun but I bemoan the lack of a focal point, a main stage for those of us who value our ear drums and don’t want to dance and I was mystified in the market by a woman with a sex toy strapped to her knee? Bars were easy to access, but at £4 a beer, pricey, and I missed being able to take my own picnic, as I do not wish to eat the food on offer. All that said, three cheers for the return of a Pride that can once again be proud. Preston Park and Brighton, 1 Sept 2012, ✪✪✪✪✪ Andrew Kay Did you disagree with our verdict on any of these shows?

If you know where to look for it. What strikes me is how every character in it is given a full internal life by Shakespeare. Even Mardian, the eunach, is given dreams of fulfilment. A longing for ‘more than life’ in two lines.” Central to the play is the contrast between austere, puritan, censorious Rome and Egypt where, according to his critics, Antony has been corrupted, sinking into a life of idleness and sheer indulgence. This tension can be seen in Antony’s character between his political interests in Rome and his heart’s desire in Egypt. Cleopatra must wait on her lover’s decision. Could the emotional insecurity caused by their situation be one of the keys to the character? “She’s with a married man – how much more insecurity do you need?" Kim responds. “She doesn't know what’s happening when Antony is out of sight. Where is he? Who is he with? Fulvia, his first wife, or Octavia, his second? I’m really enjoying playing those scenes with Michael [Pennington]. He has such strength but also a vulnerability with her. Cleopatra has continued to work her magic through the centuries and though it must be a daunting task to bring her to life, every actress worth her salt longs to play her one day. Now it’s Kim Cattrall’s turn to step up to the plate for a second time to give her Serpent Of The Nile. M
ade up of bandleader/composer/guitarist/singer Ethan Miller, Raj Ojha on drums, Cyrus Comiskey on bass, Joel Robinow on keys and vocals, and Isaiah Mitchell on guitar and vocals, Howlin’ Rain generate an elemental force together, nigh-on-perfect rock ’n’ roll. They breathe new life into familiar territory previously explored by the likes of Santana, The Allman Brothers, Rod Stewart-era Jeff Beck, Free, The Black Crowes, and classic rock in general, incorporating all those elements and more within their classic rock/prog hybrid. And yet, it eschews retro for retro’s sake, the crisp production pinpointing it in the here and now. For instance the Santanesque salsa rock rhythms of Phantom In The Valley features electronics and trumpet towards the end of the song. It’s pitch-perfect... “There was a point when we were really trying to blend Jimi Hendrix’s Electric Ladyland, Steely Dan’s Gaucho and Bruce Springsteen’s Darkness On The Edge Of Town," says Ethan Miller. While the urban cool of Steely Dan may be a little off the mark except in the final track, ‘Still Walking, Still Stone’, there is no doubting that like Steely Dan they are into crafting sophisticated cuts that aren’t predictable in their outcomes and yet flow like the best of them – compositionally it’s not so much ‘Wham Bam Thank You Mam’ as ‘Pretzel Logic’... Their third album, The Russian Wilds, is already being heralded as a classic; a rapturous, ambitious and exhilarating long player that even has, shock of shocks, decent artwork that recalls the playful and surreal work of previous masters such as Hipgnosis, the design team responsible for many of Pink Floyd’s sleeves. Howlin’ Rain are like a British summer: a rare ray of sunshine. The Haunt, Tuesday 11 September, 7.30pm, £12 follow me on twitter

harity Chuckle has a real knack for grabbing some of the best up-andcoming comedians around and booking them just as they’ve started to win plaudits, television appearances and radio spots. So, with this in mind, it was with great glee but no surprise that it was heard that their September headliner is this year’s winner of the Funny’s Funny 2012 national competition: Sam Savage. Sam’s comedy funny bones have been entertaining us for a while, her unique off-the-wall and slightly batty persona has been gathering momentum, playing smaller spots at Charity Chuckle (now there’s an eye for a talent in a pair of bookers!) and now holding her own at the top of the bill as this month’s headliner. Kerry Herbert All profits from the evening will be going to the British Heart Foundation, an organisation that support act Dave Blood Jim Holland has been involved with for some time, having had major heart surgery at the beginning of this year and been an avid fundraiser for, for some years. With sponsored exertion out of the picture for the time being he suggested a Charity Chuckle show might be his way of contributing to the cause. CC organisers and gigging comics Jim Holland and Kerry Herbert were happy to oblige. Jim and Kerry have a great track record on booking some of the best, with previous headline and support acts including two of 2012’s Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Award 2012 nominees – David Trent and James Acaster, as well as such comedy luminaries as Angelos Epithemiou, Brian Gittens, Zoe Lyons and many more. In the last year alone the regular monthly comedy nights have raised over £3,500 for a variety of charities, mostly local, nurturing strong roots in the community and supporting those that need it most – and ensuring a great night out for all. Other acts on this month’s bill include Graham Collard, Kayo, Mike Cox, Alex Petrovic and Melissa Moreman. A sneak peek at October’s (Tuesday 9) fundraiser for Amaze offers further treats, with Nick Helm headlining fresh from collecting rave reviews at the Edinburgh Fringe. With this calibre of acts consistently headlining, it’s well worth becoming a regular punter – giving something back to your community and getting your fill of cutting-edge comedy breakthroughs all in one place. Norman Babcock is an ordinary kind of kid, except that – like that other slightly less accessible movie child – he sees dead people. Norman sees ghosts, and he gets on with them every day as he goes to school, does his chores and generally lives his kid-life. The thing is, no one exept his new friend Neil believes him. Then his uncle tells him about an annual ritual that must be performed to save his town – Blithe Hollow – from a curse. After much cajoling he agrees to take part, but things don’t quite go to plan and Norman soon finds himself with a few unlikely allies, trying to save the town from the risen dead and the horrific truth of the curse. Featuring the vocal talents of Kodi Smit-McPhee, Tucker Albrizzi, Anna Kendrick, Casey Affleck, Bernard Hill and John Goodman. Released Friday 14 September, Showing at Odeon and Cineworld

STARS | TV
STARS With Val Aviv
★ARIES {Mar 21–Apr 20}
Watch out for tensions that arise from shared resources; there could be underlying ego involvement adding stress where there need not be any. With the New Moon casting a fresh light on a working ethic or health regime, you get smart and savvy.
★TAURUS {Apr 21–May 21}
A new wave of upbeat energy gives you the creative edge over others. Hiding out from the public will have its merits as you can feel mostly at peace when surrounding yourself with comfortable surroundings. Any home ties, moves or redecorations will be blessed now.
★GEMINI {May 22–June 21}
Unexpected good news travels at lightning bolt speed; it is in essence enlightening. Communications flourish and negotiations can run without stress. Matters about the home and family could be up for discussion; don’t be overly critical.
★CANCER {June 22–July 22}
If some relationships have lost that clear-cut communication, the New Moon will bring with it a chance to redirect any neurotic energy into a positive discipline of mind. Passions may run extremely hot, but are they here to last?
★LEO {July 23–Aug 22}
Drawing strength from a rather modest set of traditional values can bring security to an insecure situation. Finances are given a fresh start as the New Moon uncovers the important details of a puzzle. It’s not about being negative, but realistic, that helps you set boundaries.
★VIRGO {Aug 23–Sep 22}
At last, this week’s New Moon is a welcome breath of fresh air. You’ve reached the end of a yearly phase, which is now ready to be reborn. Are you ready to seize the moment and throw caution to the wind? Whatever you do, believe big.
★LIBRA {Sep 23–Oct 22}
Your dreams are holding more meaning now that you are able to process them consciously. A New Moon in your mysterious and hidden house of the unconscious gives you ample opportunity to ask yourself, ‘what if I could create my destiny?’
★SCORPIO {Oct 23–Nov 21}
If you have to bark orders, does that mean that you are going to bite? Of course not, but does everyone else know that? Assertion can easily be seen as aggression so remember to be tactful. You can achieve a lot, so get busy!
★SAGITTARIUS {Nov 22–Dec 20}
You get to make a great impression on someone important. You’re given your rightful authority as a parent, teacher, scholar or professional in your field. In fact, you may as well stay on the field, with so much exploring to do – it’s an outdoor world.
★CAPRICORN {Dec 21–Jan 19}
You can expect yet more delightful and spectacular revelations, so long as you are pushing the boundaries of your former understanding; life can still surprise you! Logic is a wonderful thing, what you seek you will find. Be careful what you look at.
★AQUARIUS {Jan 20–Feb 19}
With a little probing, you may uncover hidden secrets. Sometimes we are unaware of the origins of our instinctual reactions. Could they be something we were once taught long ago? Once you become aware of your inner demons, you have the power to evolve beyond them.
★PISCES {Feb 20–Mar 20}
A fortuitous happening helps you rediscover a partner that you may have been struggling to see in a new light. A fresh perspective enhances love now. While no one is perfect, it’s a very special someone that can understand your unique character. The Audience Channel 4, 9pm You know that feeling that somebody’s watching you? Especially when you’ve got a big decision to make, it almost feels like the world’s watching with baited breath. Maybe not the world here, but 50 strangers for a pivotal week in a person’s life follow them around. Starting with farmer Ian Wainwright. Bizarre.
Lilyhammer BBC4, 11pm Missing those smashing Norwegian dramas we’ve come to love BBC4 for? Do not worry. Strictly speaking this started on Tuesday, but commemoration programmes stopped us highlighting it. Another chance to see it is now, as a New York mafia member relocated to Lillehammer in Norway. Ace.

FILM: St Trinian’s Film4, 7.05pm The original series inspired by the Ronald Searle illustrations was madcap and inspired a generation of ‘gells’ to a raucous imagining of boarding school, after the bad reputation it had previously been getting off the back of Jane Eyre and the like. saturday 15 Strictly Come Dancing BBC1, 6.30pm Never mind what songs they’re playing in the shops, or the adverts on the telly – it’s time to become vaguely aware of Christmas for the first time – when both Strictly Come Dancing and The X Factor are on the telly. Brand new celebrities hoping to come out of their clumsy chrysalis as graceful butterflies.
Doctor Who BBC1, 7.35pm We all know that most episodes of Doctor Who are classic Western scenarios – stranger in town blows in, puts the world to right then disappears again without even leaving his name – but this time there’s Stetsons and everything. The Doctor is the sheriff and a cyborg is wearing the metaphorical black hat.
FILM: Roman Holiday Film4, 4.55pm Audrey Hepburn stars as the European princess in a gilded cage who breaks free whilst in Rome. Gregory Peck co-stars as the journalist feigning ignorance of her true identity and together the pair hop on a moped and explore the city. A sweet, funny and heartwarming classic from 1950s cinema.

sunday 16 Dragons’ Den BBC2, 9pm You’ve got to be quirky to pitch to the Dragons but some of these ideas aren’t simply outside the box, they’re down the road and jumping into another receptacle with asymmetric corners and a spring on each of the seven corners. Gems tonight include an interactive game at a urinal, haircare for kids, and a sand sofa.
Big Fat Quiz Of The 80s Channel 4, 9pm There’s something bubble gum pink with a Flock Of Seagulls hair swipe and a side order of stickers saying ‘Coal Not Dole’ that sugar coats the 80s. Jonathan Ross, Jason Manford, Micky Flanagan and Carol Vorderman compete for the best nostalgia trips while Jimmy Carr hosts proceedings.
The X Factor ITV2, 4.50pm The tricky thing about must-see Saturday night telly is, well, sometimes Saturday night activities get in the way. Perfectly timed to catch up on last night’s gripping events before tonight’s lot begins, spend your afternoon emersed in key changes and deluded dog walkers. Isn’t Dermot good to them all?
