LA DOLCE VITA
Living La Dolce Vita Brighton’s new concierge service, La Dolce Vita, is here to lend an expert helping hand
L
a Dolce Vita is a recently established business, providing professional services that enable individuals and businesses in Brighton and Sussex to use their time more effectively and efficiently, thus ensuring they have more time to spend on what is most important, whether it be friends, family, work or pleasure. Set up by Jools and Samantha, the company has worked tirelessly to ensure that all of their clients have received the quality service expected of a professional concierge. Having built an exhaustive database of proven resources, La Dolce Vita provides up-to-date information on events, special offers
and places to visit, as well as a database of trusted suppliers and trades people. Although the business is still young, it has been quickly established as a reliable source of support and assistance, and has already helped over 500 clients throughout the region. The spectrum of services offered by La Dolce Vita is extensive, and can range from the most complex to the simplest of tasks. Included amongst the services they offer are: waiting for deliveries, supplying trusted trades people, relocations, home maintenance, running personal errands, shopping,
cleaning and ironing, house sitting, baby sitting, pet walking/sitting, holiday arrangements, occasion planning and much more. In fact, even if the task is not on their list they will still endeavour to do it. Recently, la Dolce Vita were enlisted to help organise a business event, and due to their expert local knowledge, the organisation, preparation and execution on the day was professional – yet very relaxed – and the calibre of venue, food and entertainment found at short notice and within tight budgets was excellent. Equally challenging, and also at very short notice, they were asked to organise a hen party
(during which they managed to incorporate a few splendid surprises!) and this, too, was a great success. Jools, director of La Dolce Vita, understands perfectly what it means to need help, as she manages her

business whilst raising her daughter as a single mum. “The reason La Dolce Vita is such a success is because I appreciate how wonderful it is to have someone help manage your life and take care of all the important trivia! Raising a child and running my own business whilst attempting to lead a relatively normal social life means that when I turn up to see a potential customer, I understand exactly what is required.” La Dolce Vita Concierge Service, 7 Kings Road, Brighton, BN1 1NE, 01273 921120, www.ladolcevita.org.uk

What they said: ■ SIMON KIRBY,
CONSERVATIVE MP FOR BRIGHTON KEMPTOWN:
“I have been supporting Brighton’s bid for a local television station from the outset and it is great news that the application has been successful. Brighton is the ideal location for a local television station with a vibrant culture and I am sure the station will be a huge success. I am confident that the station will provide a valuable outlet for local creative talent and will help to create jobs in the area. Congratulations must go to everyone involved with the bid. I will now be pressing to ensure the coverage is as wide as possible across the city to ensure as many residents as possible are able to enjoy the benefits.”
■ CAROLINE
LUCAS, GREEN MP FOR BRIGHTON PAVILION:
“The new local channels, which could be on air before the end of 2013, will give the people of Brighton and Hove a closer-to-home news source with programmes that are more relevant to their lives – and play a key role in supporting local democracy. Our wealth of media talent and strong track record of community engagement mean we’re ideally placed to make a real success of local TV.”
■ MIKE
WEATHERLEY, CONSERVATIVE MP FOR HOVE:
“This award is fantastic news. Latest TV will be a great opportunity for Brighton and Hove, so I am delighted that all the hard work to push our city as a pioneer of the new scheme has paid off. championed by Mr Hunt even before he became a minister. He was promoted in the recent cabinet reshuffle and it was left to his replacement Maria Miller to announce the licence for Brighton and Hove. The project is being supported nationally by £25 million of capital funding, mainly to cover the cost of transmitters, and then by £5 million a year for three years. This is believed to be worth a six-figure sum for each broadcaster in the first year, with the BBC expected to buy content. Mr Smith said: “Latest TV would like to thank the past and present Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Jeremy Hunt and Maria Miller, the DCMS and all at Ofcom for realising the importance of local democracy. “We would also like to thank our three MPs, Caroline Lucas, Mike Weatherley and Simon Kirby, and Jason Kitcat, the leader of Brighton and Hove City Council, for the council’s support, plus Gill Mitchell, the leader of the Brighton and Hove Labour and Co-operative Party, and Lord Bassam of Brighton for their crossparty support.” ■

ikers’ deaths on the roads dominated the news this past week. The family of 38-year-old Charlotte Tagg, a mother of three who died at the Brighton Speed Trials, paid tribute to a “unique woman”: “She lived a full, adventurous life on her own terms, and touched the lives of many with her sunshine and smiles.” Charlotte died in the sidecar of a black Honda Asco which crashed into a wall. The 61-year-old rider is critical but stable. A motorcylist was killed and two other riders and a pillion passenger were seriously injured in separate collisions in Sussex. Chief Insp Phil Nicholas said: “Statistics for people killed or seriously injured on two wheels are consistently high – we are working with the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership to educate riders to keep them safe.” During the ACE Café Reunion, covert and overt police motorcyclists issued 24 fixed penalties for speeding, antisocial riding and for riding with no insurance. We also recently had film crews working on a film about Princess Diana in Waterhall, and television drama, The Fear, is currently being filmed near Black Rock. Our city has the talent and skills to support making films, offering high quality producers, animators and performers, and those who can do the logistics for these projects. Every silver screen portrayal of Brighton attracts more ‘film tourists’ to come and see what we’re all about, and is a welcome boost to our reputation as a place to do business.
The 1km swim takes place in the shelter of the inner harbour against the backdrop of the cliffs amongst some of the Marina’s most impressive boats. It is popular with experienced athletes as the clear and calm water provides for great racing. For the less experienced it is a chance to swim in open water without swallowing half the sea! The 32km bike ride heads east from Brighton Marina, past Roedean School, through Ovingdean village, and up to Brighton Racecourse on the edge of the South Downs. Heading back down towards the Marina this circuit is then repeated before returning to Brighton Marina along the coast road. This is one of the most hilly courses in the triathlon.
Finally, the 8km run heads out and back on the undercliff walk to Rottingdean. With the white backdrop from the chalk cliffs, views out to sea on a sunny day and blue skies you couldn’t ask for a more picturesque location. The team relay race is ideal for novices, those recovering from a fitness injury or those just looking for a bit more fun! There are some team places and this is a good way of putting a toe in the water. The Brighton Triathlon takes place Sunday 23 September 2012. Keeping our children safe Social workers have seen a surge in caseloads since the Baby Peter scandal. Frank le Duc reports
T
he number of calls to social workers in Brighton and Hove is between 700 and 800 in an average month. Some months it is higher. The number of children being assessed has come close to one in ten at times. After the Baby Peter scandal in Haringey, London, it is little surprise that the professionals and the public are more careful. But the level of referrals and assessments and interventions in Brighton and Hove appears to be much higher than the national average. James Dougan, the head of children’s and family services at Brighton and Hove Council, has spoken to councillors about the challenges – professionally and financially – in trying to find the right balance. He was clear about the constraints. Some of these are
legal, some are much more practical, such as the turnover in frontline social workers quitting their jobs. He said: “The social work task, decision-making about the rights of parents and the needs of children is the most onerous of all local government responsibilities. However, it is not the most debated within the council and when it is discussed in wider society it is usually accompanied with sensationalised newspaper headlines. “Intervening in the lives of families with complicated emotions, aggressive or deceitful behaviour, and an absence of reasonable expectations of the norm, is inherently stressful for social workers and other professionals to
a degree unimaginable to most outsiders to the process. “Currently, in England it is accepted that all parents are allowed to bring up their children in their own way until they demonstrably fail. The likelihood is that this freedom will permit some parents to be reckless or wilful as to their children’s safety. In this context, the state intervention – ie, local authority, police, health – will from time to time be too late, too indecisive, too prone to optimism. “There is evidence that no other ‘fail safe’ option – promoting wider, earlier, less intervention – would be acceptable to society, and specifically the courts. It is the courts, not social workers, that decide to take children into care, and the test remains one of the alternative being the risk of significant harm to the child.
UNKEEPABLE PROMISES “Political promises that exhort that ‘such deaths (or severe traumas) must never happen again’ are irresponsible and serve to obscure a more fundamental debate about the fundamental rights of children and parents within England and within resources available. “Good social workers making good judgments in good systems can still not be enough to prevent some parents harming or killing their children. Neither would a more
interventionist system necessarily serve children’s interests.” Mr Dougan, who has a quiet, understated and reassuring manner, added: “All children and their families who require a service from social work are referred to this referral point or refer themselves to this point. Contact with the team can be made through the main telephone number, in writing, email or in person at The Hub.” The number is 01273 295920. He said: “The team receives between 700 and 800 contacts about children and their families each month, that is about 4.5 calls every working hour through the month. Calls can be in writing, via an email or by telephone. The police send reports of all incidents where children have been present or involved. This service was redesigned in 2011 and was judged to have good capacity to improve by Ofsted in its most recent inspection [December 2011].” Sometimes advice is given. In cases that look more serious, an initial assessment is carried out. There were almost 3,100 of these in the year to the end of March. The rate has fallen from 727.6 per 10,000 children in 2010-11 to 660. Mr Dougan said that this remained significantly above the 2010-11 national average of 398.2 per 10,000. The council has a set of “statistical neighbours” – councils where the comparisons are more

LATEST NEWS like with like. Even with our statistical neighbours, the average was considerably lower at 460.8 per 10,000. Greater concerns prompt a core assessment and 1,744 of these completed in the year to the end of March. The rate of these has also fallen – from 398.7 in 2010-11 to 372 in 2011-12 – but it is still significantly above the 2010-11 national average of 167.8 and the rate of 192.2 for our statistical neighbours.
“What frightens me is just how much crap there has to be in someone’s life before we intervene. We make sure all our team know the threshold so when we get a call from a professional we know it’s likely to be above the threshold. But we have social workers attacked. We’ve had cars firebombed. We’ve had paint thrown over cars. We do regular risk assessments. “When I came here we had three area teams for child protection with three different sets of standards for referral and assessment. Now ‘NOT A WICKED CITY’ there’s only one. We now have one Mr Dougan said: “Social work activity front door, one team and a single set per child population remains high of standards.” He said that the relative to many south east or integrated team included social statistical neighbour authorities. Mr Parkin said: “The saddest thing is we don’t know why. This isn’t a wicked, evil city. “We forget at our peril that even the poorest parents love their children passionately. They just don’t know what to do about it. We’re dealing with troubled families with multiple problems and a huge number of challenges – parents who have no job, drug or drink problems, or mental health problems, and no one’s getting the child up for school.
A PARENT’S JOB “A parent’s job is to keep their children safe. Our job is to backstop them on behalf of society. Some face neglect. For whatever reason the adults think their lives are more important than their children. Some face domestic violence – this mostly affects women and children. And then there’s drugs and alcohol. Four fifths of referrals have drugs or alcohol as a causative issue.

THE COST OF CARE Costs are under pressure – as they are across the public sector – so Mr Parkin and Mr Dougan have overhauled the commissioning of services from outside providers. Mr Parkin said: “We’ve taken £4 million out of the costs by setting out a spec and asking for a price. We have almost 50 providers. We’ve got very sophisticated providers. Every placement is bespoke. “Costs are under control. A lot of that work started before I got here. We’ve had some very major reorganisations to improve provision and outcomes. There’s a greater clarity about what’s expected at every level. Part of the aim of reorganisation is to prevent the need for children having to come into contact with social services. Get the plan right at the early stages and we can manage the demand.” He said that the staff were still asking themselves key questions about, for example, how long children are looked after by the council. He said: “Other places are better at getting them back out again. We have to ask ourselves, do we keep them for too long? And how do we help them get back out again?” Mr Parkin has brought some of his skills as a former Ofsted inspector to the job, and a rigorous approach to benchmarking and raising standards. He said: “We are targeting individual families with individual programmes. Part of my job is to tell people what we want and then do everything in our power to help them meet that. The commitment of our staff in these areas is just phenomenal. Kids who need care will get care.” ■
Airport makeovers The changing face of international travel
I
don’t like Heathrow. Clearing immigration topped two and a half hours at one point last week, but there is hope. Lewis Hamilton Ethiopia is thriving and offering a blueprint for the future of international travel. Yes, it’s true, frequent flyers may soon find themselves getting acquainted with the facilities at Addis Ababa’s Bole airport. Ethiopia will this year begin its first Boeing Dreamliner flights: the 787 has a massive 14,200km range – roughly equivalent to a 20-hour non-stop flight – allowing direct flights to almost any city on the planet. In anticipation of a passenger boom, the once grim airport was remodelled last year: the runways were extended and a new automated baggage handling system was introduced. It can handle 11,500 suitcases per hour – as many as London Heathrow.
Terry Parkin
So what can we do to keep up? Well, why not build an airport in the estuary, with a high speed train link to the City? A similar project was completed in Hong Kong, and using the airport is a joy. Construction of Chek Lap Kok took eight years and has been a resounding success. As for the queues, the UK joining the European Schengen visa scheme would reduce waiting time for many thousands of people travelling within most of Europe. Ah, to be Prime Minister for the day…

uring the international break, two things happen to clubs that don’t play. Firstly, they integrate their new signings and secondly, they work on tactics. This return to action for Championship clubs marks the start of the campaign in earnest. Not that previous results don’t count, but the pre-transfer window results tend to look skewed once the table settles down around mid-October. However, their points tally puts Albion fourth in the table and these points are not to be scoffed at; that point from Cardiff City may be the one point that puts The Albion in the play-offs or over the line for automatic promotion. If you examine the tables from previous seasons, what is clear is that the table at this stage of the season is no arbiter of who will be top come May.
Albion Women’s hat-trick hero Kim Stenning is targeting a season on top of the scoring charts and a top-of-the-table finish for the team. The striker has started the season in blistering form, scoring five goals in three games, and following her three-goal haul against Colchester United yesterday Kim has set herself the target of bettering her impressive tally from the 2011/12 campaign.

“Who will fill the role The games coming up are what The Amex was built for. The vacated by the still nights start drawing in and the floodlights add that extra sheen injured Vicente?” to the atmosphere that makes the match-day experience. What of the new signings? Will Gus play them all? Probably not. The key question is who will fill the role vacated by the still injured Vicente. The most obvious starter is David Lopez who is looking more a like-for-like replacement for Vicente the more we know of him. The other likely starter could be Stephen Dobbie with Dean Hammond and Andrea Orlandi on the bench. These are only thoughts at this stage for Gus Poyet. Training and the matches may well shake down the squad until it settles into more of a pattern. With no sign of a target man, this may well affect the tactics. It would not be beyond the realms of possibility to see the midfielders scoring more goals from now on as he uses the more powerful midfield to play in the manner of the fluid Spanish national team. I still find myself pinching myself at this comparison, but it is not beyond credulity to see the join as it were. A possession based passing game, with mobile midfielders who are technically adept is the way Spain set themselves up to ‘tempo’ other teams to death. It’s harder to do at Championship level as very few players have the technical mastery of an Iniesta or Xavi. But The Albion are not far off with their quartet of La Liga experienced players. Bruno is, as predicted, a firm fan favourite, and Lopez looks like he might follow suit. The key comparison is the striker role. Spain played with the so called ‘Invisible 9’. Now some Albion fans with long memories will recall The Albion having several of those, all of them unintentional. This looks like the pattern Gus will settle on until he needs to play more expansively, for example if the team go a goal behind. It looks like the Albion faithful may have to maintain their patience for some cagey games ahead until the new signings start to show their mettle, then, who knows, Gus may not need that No 9 after all.
everything was rushed, so in future we need to prepare better when we are getting ready for away games. “We seem to struggle away from home whereas at home we rarely get beaten. At West Ham we were amazing in the second half but we never got going during the first 45. “We now have big league and cup games against Lewes in consecutive weeks and we know it will be a big test but we are looking to win both games.”

“Last season I scored 23 goals so I really want to beat that,” says Kim. “I have almost reached a quarter of my target for this season. The win is, and always will be, the most important thing though. It was massive to bounce back from the defeat at West Ham so quickly because we are a side hunting for promotion, so we have got to aim to win every game. “First half we were all over Colchester and we did really well but the last 20 minutes were a bit iffy. We managed to hold on to the win. “We are targeting winning this league and I would be disappointed to finish anywhere other than first because we are capable of finishing top." The former Southampton player has entered her fifth season with the Seagulls and is hoping that the side have learnt lessons for future away trips. “At West Ham we seemed to be tired from the journey and

The wine trade is an industry I have thoroughly enjoyed for 50 years. Wine is a fascinating culture and there is much to learn, as the man who introduced me to the trade told me: ‘I have forgotten more about this trade than you could ever learn’. And I am still learning. I like to promote English Wines and talk to people about the production process, how the vines are cultivated and how to spot the best wines, along with enjoying the wines that we are tasting at the time. My own personal passion outside of English Wines is for Vintage Port and Sparkling Wine.
”
Alan Jenkins celebrated 50 years in the wine trade this month, having started work on 1 September 1962, aged 15. One of his first jobs was breaking used wine bottles into bins for recycling, before moving on to learn many other aspects of the wine trade including the retail side of wine and managing shops for some of the big retailers of the time. He opened his own specialist wine shop in 1991 which he ran successfully for 17 years. Today he works for the Bolney Wine Estate hosting talks, tastings and guided tours. He also runs his own independent business promoting English Wines and gives talks and wine tastings to groups and organisations locally. Alan mixes in his sparkling personality to make his talks very entertaining and is often asked by people if he is Rolf Harris’s brother! thewinestore@hotmail.com www.bolneywineestate.co.uk

ashion model and TV personality Jodie Kidd stepped out in Brighton last week as our city was named the most dog-friendly place in Britain! Brighton and Hove was announced as the winner of Cesar’s search for ‘Britain’s Most Dog-Friendly Place’, chosen by a panel of judges led by Cesar ambassador Jodie Kidd. Brighton and Hove was selected following a nationwide hunt where Cesar asked people to nominate their favourite place to visit with their dog. Brighton and Hove, which made the shortlist alongside Padstow and Harrogate, was crowned winner due to its wide variety of open spaces and ease of canine accessibility, making it the ideal place for owners to spend quality time with their dogs. Jodie Kidd, model and dog-lover, said: “It was great to see what the establishments of Brighton and Hove had to offer me and my dog, Dooby. We’ve received some great suggestions throughout the nomination campaign, but Brighton came out on top.” www.facebook.com/cesarpawsinplaces

Meanwhile on the other side of the box, the line-up for Strictly Come Dancing has been announced and with it a surprise for Brighton’s Zoë Ball. Her lovely dad, Johnny Ball, will be slipping on the sequinned lycra and taking to the floor as Strictly’s oldest ever contestant. Zoe will be returning to reprise her role as presenter of the spin-off show It Takes Two when the show returns in a few weeks.
Watch out for local author Bethan Roberts, who you will be seeing and hearing a lot of in the city over the coming weeks. That’s because Bethan’s novel, My Policeman, is the focus of this year’s City Reads, one of my favourite festivals on the city’s calendar. A highlight of the festival for me will be seeing Bethan in conversation with Eats, Shoots and Leaves author Lynne Truss (7 October).

BRIGHTON ART FAIR 15 Sam Hewitt – Gardner St Morning
Creative inspiration Brighton Art Fair welcomes an eclectic gathering of visual artists to the Corn Exchange this September
L
ocal artist Sarah Young and administrator Jon Tutton spent many years exhibiting at craft and art fairs. Some were good, some were busy but poor for sales, some were simply dire, and so they got a good grip on what they wanted to achieve when they set up Brighton Art Fair in 2003 and then Brighton Craft Fair (MADE – Brighton) which takes place in November. Both shows were organised to fill a gap in a very creative town where opportunities to sell work were strangely thin on the ground. Art Fair Director Jon Tutton says; “I think that we have built up a reputation for delivering an art fair that is enjoyed by the visitors and exhibitors alike; it’s friendly and fun but without compromising on the originality and quality of the work on show”. Brighton Art Fair showcases over 120 contemporary artists and attracts a capacity audience of nearly 6,000 visitors to the beautiful Corn Exchange in the heart of the city. The fair has built a very strong reputation for exhibiting exceptional quality and original artwork in a relaxed, informal and friendly environment. Brighton Art Fair is the largest visual art exhibition on the South Coast, with year on year sales growth exceeding expectations. Over half a million pounds’ worth of art was sold in 2011, including the commissioning work which inevitably arises from such events. The selection panel have once again organised a stunning show. Painters, printmakers, ceramicists, photographers and sculptors will be exhibiting with the most original and eclectic work across as wide a variety of methods and subjects as possible.

Christopher Sacre – See What This Man Gave Birth To After Using 2,000 Condoms In 22 Days
Artists themselves sell their work direct to the public, bringing a personal feel to viewing and to the buying process. Visitors enjoy meeting the artists – learning about their creative inspirations, techniques and future projects. This time around, Brighton Art Fair is delighted to welcome Christopher Sacre who will be showing his work in the entrance foyer. Christopher’s epiphany as an artist arrived unexpectedly when he discovered a happy marriage between condoms and plaster in 2010. The resultant installation, ‘See What This Man Gave Birth To After Using 2,000 Condoms In 22 Days’ consisted of 2,000 plaster ‘babies’ – simple cast forms whose method of production references the way in which a used condom is knotted and discarded. “Would they be black? White? Deaf? Disabled?” he asks. “The sperm left inside the condom all looks the same...” For the Brighton Art Fair, Christopher has been inspired to create new artworks based on his installation. Using bold colours from our national flag and the Olympic rings he explores new

territory, but, as ever, chooses to remain ambiguous as to the meaning and form the work will take. Christopher says, “It’s an honour to be invited to showcase my work at Brighton Art Fair, which I consider to be one of the increasingly important dates in the art calendar. I’m a little daunted to be honest but looking forward to meeting everyone!” The Private View takes place on the evening of Thursday 20 September, and is by invitation only. On arrival each visitor will get a glass of wine generously supplied by Harvey’s of Lewes, and canapes will be on offer, each handmade by local caterers Elizabeth Caton. The fair will then be open to the public on Friday 21 September from 11am – 7.30pm, Saturday 22 from 10am – 6pm and Sunday 23 from 10am – 5pm. ANDREW KAY’S FOOD & DRINK
Food & Drink Andrew Kay slips out for a tasty lunch at Mange Tout in Trafalgar Street
but I need to show a little care when it comes to my consumption of food. The Toulouse sausage with lentils was very tempting but I suspected it would be rather robust and not tick my careful box. Instead I chose the roast hake with new potatoes, sweet potato puree, braised fennel and a sauce vierge. The fish was perfect, a decent slab of pearly white fish, cooked perfectly and sat on a small pile of potatoes. The fennel, a replacement for the advertised pak choi, was delicious and a much better choice in my view. The potatoes and the puree added texture and sweetness and the sauce vierge was buzzing with the flavours and smells of fresh herbs. It was, in short, first class, just the right size to satisfy and a sensible price at £10. I suspect the same dish in a posh joint could be sold for at least another £8 on top. JC chose the sausage and when it arrived I looked on with a certain sense of envy but also righteousness at having chosen the lighter dish. But my word it looked good. The big sausage took centre stage but a supporting slice of garlic sausage added variety of both taste and texture. JC thought it might be a boudin blanc but the waiter assured him it was not, rather a garlic sausage. The stew of lentils looked unctuous and was heavy with slices of bacon. If the bacon is the same as they serve at breakfast then I know it tastes good. I stuck to my guns and refused dessert, despite hankering after some variant on Eton Mess, and I finished with an espresso which we took outside so that JC could enjoy a small but stinky cigar. I must go to Mange Tout more often; the food is always great, the service charming and the clientele seem to be there because they enjoy great food and cooking. Interestingly, the room was full of people partaking of a proper meal and not just loitering over a latte for an hour, a sure sign that this is a place for food lovers. It was also, on this occasion, a Latest 7 supports buggy-free zone, which after my earlier tantrum was a good thing. Perhaps if prams got smaller again then things might be better, but that, I suspect, would be like asking parents to give up their Chelsea tractors and do the school run on foot, or at least in a Nissan Micra. Light bites
Dejeuner A
few months back, on what was a rare, sunny Saturday morning, I decided to come into the city centre to meet a friend for a spot of brunch. I like brunch from time to time and it’s certainly no bad thing at the weekend, leaving time for other more important stuff than cooking three meals. We headed into town to a popular haunt where I know they do a decent brunch, but on arrival we found it packed to the gunwales, and mainly with families, young children and buggies. Now, I have no objection to kids in restaurants, well behaved ones that is; the sooner we introduce the next generation to dining out the stronger the future of the restaurant business will be. Buggies, however, drive me mad. Needless to say, we moved on, and I am very glad we did. Our second choice was Mange Tout in Trafalgar Street. I was already a fan but the exceptional breakfasts we enjoyed were superb, tasty, generous and sensibly priced. I loved the freshly squeezed pink grapefruit juice that day and the relaxed atmosphere of the place. It made me wonder why we did not go more often. When my friend JC called and asked me to meet him for some lunch I was happy to suggest Mange Tout. JC is French with a capital F and as a restauranteur he is as passionate about food as one might expect. Strangely though, he had never eaten at Mange Tout so for him it was going to be a first. Our meeting was about business. JC and his lovely wife, Julia, are hosting a second International Chef Exchange and there were one or two things we needed to talk over as well as some rather exciting plans for a new venture at L’Eglise, their Hove bistro. (More of that when things are finalised.) Knowing I had a busy evening with no plan for dinner, I was happy to have a proper lunch. Just the one course you understand but more than the usual snack. What am I saying? I often have a proper lunch, as I detest snacks and whole heartedly believe in taking a break from the computer in the middle of the day to give the eyes and the brain a rest. JC was of the same mind and has for years tried to encourage us all to eat a proper lunch by coming up with very attractive and affordable offers. The menu for the day is chalked up at Mange Tout. I would have loved to do three courses

Hurry with your curry One of my favourite jobs of the year is the annual curry chef competition. I have been judging it for several years now and it always delights me that the standard is so high, the chefs so enthusiastic, and that they all recognise the importance of high standards of hygiene in their kitchens. Which is a good thing as to enter they need to have reached a standard set by the city Council’s vigilant Safety Team. The Food Safety Team at the City Council are currently organising their third Brighton & Hove Curry Chef of the Year. The competition is an opportunity for local curry restaurant and takeaway chefs to celebrate and show off their skills. Previous chefs that have been awarded the accolade of being Curry Chef of the Year have been Khanchit NimnualAnant of Krua Anne, Kensington Gardens in 2010 and Sabu Joseph of The Chilli Pickle, Jubilee Street in 2011. I know how much the chefs who have entered in
the past have valued the experience of entering and for some winning the now much coveted prize. If your favourite curry chef has achieved the prerequisite four or five stars in the Scores on the Doors ratings then encourage them to enter and join in the fun. This year the cook off is planned to take place in the kitchens of Brighton Racecourse, and once again I will be part of the team deciding which korma cuts the mustard, which biriani is the bee’s knees and which dansak bites the dust. All businesses that cook curry as a traditional part of their menu and currently have a food hygiene rating of 4 or 5 stars have all been invited to enter the competition by 12 October 2012. HEALTH & BEAUTY 19
You smoothie! Holly Cozens looks at hair removal options
Why wax? Many people, both men and women, find waxing to be their preferred method of hair removal. By removing the whole hair follicle instead of just what grows beyond the surface, waxing gives you longer-lasting smooth skin and reduces irritation for when the hair grows back. A benefit of waxing is you are not tending to these areas with a razor every other day in the shower. Also, some claim the thickness of the hair regrowth decreases the more regularly you wax. But waxing may not be for everyone.If you have a particularly low tolerance for pain, this treatment can be quite uncomfortable. However, professional spas and beauticians have now introduced different forms of wax like hot wax and soya to try and ensure less painful experiences. If you think you can handle this method of hair removal every four to six weeks, then give it a try.
Shaving the way Possibly the most painless of all hair removal options, shaving is definitely a popular choice with both men and women. Fast, cheap and portable, shaving is convenient whether you are at home or on holiday. Major shaving brands are constantly developing new types of razors to improve performance and to rival other methods by focusing on smoothness and reduced irritation. These promises of improvement are not enough to keep some people with a razor in their hand. Since shaving does not affect the hairs any deeper than the surface, regrowth is much quicker and is time consuming for a smoother upkeep in the long term. Blades can also irritate the skin and cause itching if areas are not looked after properly. Choose a shaving gel or foam for sensitive skin to prevent irritation, and replace your blade if it doesn’t glide smoothly, as a dull blade can cause a rash. Bear in mind that shaving alone is unlikely to reduce thickness of hair when regrowing. If that particular issue enters into your hair removal choice choose waxing or IPL.
IPL can make it permanent At the very mention of the phrase ‘permanent hair removal’, I’m sure many of us are already trying to convince ourselves and others what a money-saving investment Intense Pulsed Light treatment would be. Although laser hair removal cannot technically guarantee the removal of every single hair in the treated area, many women and men testify that it dramatically reduces hair regrowth, deeming it incredibly effective. Imagine, four or five treatments followed by no more worrying about the next wax or shave. Major high street brands have also recently released their own at-home versions to buy making it a more accessible and affordable option, but if you are unsure of IPL visit a professional clinic. IPL treatment is more expensive and the results differ between individuals and the treated area. Whether it’s the neck, chest, underarms or legs, laser hair removal is an increasingly popular choice, even more so with the home versions. With how much money I will spend on razors and salon appointments over the next 40 years, IPL could prove to be a wise choice.

n a packed Brighton Dome Concert Hall, on tour, promoting her 11th studio album, Banga, an ecstatic audience hung on Patti Smith’s every word. An amazing live act, tender, articulate and passionate, at 65, Smith is still getting the major artist treatment from her record label and still making her own brand of poetic rock: at times tough, thoughtful, sensual, uncompromising and anthemic. So often referred to as the high priestess of punk, Smith still has that electrified presence, that raw aggressive passion – but she is also so quirky, so elegant, her dancing so fluid and carefree, her literary and cultural influences so wide. Her poetic side is ever evident: in her incantatory style, her incredible literary context, and her careful respect for words. Her sensitive side was at the forefront at first, with a sweet version of ‘Dancing Barefoot’ but this soon gave way to a solid rockier sound – thanks to a brilliant backing band featuring long-time side-kick Lenny Kaye and Smith’s son Jackson Smith – as the pace built through soulful renditions of ‘This Is The Girl’, her tribute to Amy Winehouse, and the classic ‘Pissing In A River’ to the sexually-charged ‘Because The Night’, a powerful, stomping version of ‘Gloria’, the anthemic ‘Power To The People’ and finally a suitably crazed version of ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Nigger’. Between songs, Smith was effortlessly charming and spoke warmly of Brighton and the beach. An amazing live performer, a force of nature, an intellectual heavyweight and a class act. Quite brilliant. SHERLOCK HOLMES – A STUDY IN FEAR!
With Holmes red hot on TV, this threeman show could appear flat, but the zip was all in the text and confident delivery. It was heavy with information yet these professionals conveyed every word, every nuance, and spiked it with humour. Their timing was flawless. Watson was predictably irritating until his “I’m a soldier, Holmes” speech gave the character stature. This new production would make an excellent radio play. It relies on sound effects and the set adds little. So why put it on the stage? Well, go along to the Connaught and enjoy the inventive twist in the last scene. Following their previous productions of Macbeth and Hamlet, Icarus Theatre Collective presents a bold new production of Shakespeare’s most tragically romantic tale at the Connaught Theatre in Worthing. Icarus Theatre Collective launched in 2004 and has a reputation for punchy and vibrant productions of contemporary and classic theatre. The company’s productions have received accolades including Time Out’s Critics Choice and have performed their work both nationally and internationally, winning awards across Europe. MUSIC: DEXYS Turn back the clocks as this iconic band storm the Brighton Dome
O
ne of the more ‘welcome’ reunions of recent times has been that of Dexys Midnight Runners (and to emphasise, this is not all about cashing in), a band out of Birmingham, who for a few years at the beginning of the 80s were one of the best as well as most popular bands around. They dominated the charts with hit singles such as ‘Geno’, ‘Come On Eileen’, ‘There There My Dear’, ‘Jackie Wilson Said’ and ‘The Celtic Soul Brothers’. Image was always a big part of the band’s appeal, and this has changed regularly over the years; from donkey jackets or leather coats and woolly hats to hooded tops, boxing boots and pony tails, right up to the Too-Rye-Ay look that saw the band attired in dungarees, scarves and leather waistcoats – a scruffy, right-off-the-farm look. Rowland had said of the image: “These are my best clothes. Again it just feels right for the music. Everybody else is dressing up sort of straight-laced and we come in wearing these and it’s like, y’know, here we are...a bit of hoedowning is even possible! We wanted to be a group that looked like something... a formed group, a project, not just random.” Rowland and the band weren’t able to follow up these successes; many members left and strange musical decisions were made, with Rowland’s reputation as ‘difficult’ affecting both his music and his personal life. In the end they came out with Don’t Stand Me Down in 1985, considered by some to be a nu-soul classic, but a commercial failure, not helped by Rowland’s initial refusal to release a single from the album. For this period the look featured ties, pin-striped suits and neatly combed hair – a musical and stylistic approach that Rowland has described as: “so clean and simple; it’s a much more adult approach now”. The new album, only the fourth in Dexys’ career, finally arrived this year; One Day I’m Going To Soar made it to number 13 in the charts. It’s a triumphant return to form, and their live shows are apparently as good as they always were. Ever the perfectionist – the ‘James Brown of UK indie soul’ – Rowland has seemingly fought off many of the demons that plagued him for much of the ‘80s and ‘90s. “I want to get everything 100 percent right, and know that it’s the best I can do and every note is there for a reason. The only way I can be satisfied is to make the record I’m hearing in my head on my own terms.” The look? It’s speakeasy ‘20s and ‘30s gangster glam. lways a good thing: mixing good times with a good cause. This brand new monthly night in the centre of town has been established by comedian and promoter Sami Stone, one half of the promoting team that set up Laughtermarket at The Old Market, who has one thing in her sights – raising awareness of Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF). Explaining her motives further, Stone says: “This is the best that I can do to offer my encouragement Phil Kay and support to MSF. It will only be a drop in the ocean, but I am very grateful to the acts that have agreed Grainne to take part and also the venue who Maguire have generously offered to pay their expenses. All in all, whatever we raise will be better than sitting at home wondering what the world is coming to, but being paralysed to do anything about it.” Considerably better, in fact, with anarchic Perrier nominee of 1993 Sami Stone and 1994 British Comedy Awards winner for best stand-up Phil Kay headlining the first show, and fantastic support from Grainne Maguire, Rachel Parris and Joe Wells. Already in place to top the bill in October is one of Stuart Lee’s favourite comics, Simon Munnery, and the months after that will see Sarah Kendall, Josie Long and Imran Yusuf offering their services for this very good cause. Sami Stone continued, “The work that MSF do is awe-inspiring. They put themselves directly in the firing line with very little resources and often they are themselves a target for hostility. Sometimes this even results in death or kidnappings. But still MSF persevere, administering aid and medicine to those victims of war.” You can donate directly to MSF by visiting their website: www.msf.org.uk The Quadrant, Friday 21 September, 8pm, £6/5. et your hankies ready, chaps and gals, as not only is this so packed full of bright young things it could make T4’s booker faint in excitement, they’re also very good and incredibly touching in this bleak but ultimately uplifting tale. Latest 7 got a chance to watch a preview of the film this summer and was impressed by the acting chops on Dakota Fanning as the spikey teenager Tessa, who decides when she is told that her cancer is now terminal that she will go for quality of life over quantity, and stops her chemotherapy to embark on her own teenage ‘to do’ list. Including things like ‘shoplifting’ and ‘get in a fight’, it’s a list of commonplace teenage events she has compressed to fit into her remaining days. Another item, of course, involves romance, which after a false start looks likely to take the shape of new neighbour Adam, played by Jeremy Irvine – cast before his phenomenal success centre stage in Steven Spielberg’s War Horse. Completing the core cast are Paddy Considine and Olivia Williams as Tessa’s parents, coping and not coping in their own ways with Tessa’s decision and her self-imposed imminent departure. By the way, Considine utterly rocks as the heart-broken and bereft parent, with each of Tessa’s offhand barbs cutting him to the quick. The final cast member is Brighton – which is where the majority of the film is set. Used to great effect, it’s clear that the character of the city is intrinsic to the film. Makes you glad to be so close to this great location, and although you may emerge red-eyed, the performances and writing are so good you won’t mind having to don your shades to exit with dignity. Released Wednesday 19 September. STARS With Val Aviv
★ARIES {Mar 21–Apr 20}
Some partnerships are simply hard work, but they can be the most rewarding. Don’t be afraid to challenge the status quo, especially when it feels like there’s a heavy weight dragging you down. If freedom is a state of mind, then change your thinking.
★TAURUS {Apr 21–May 21}
News you hear this week could be life changing. Extra lashings of luck are bestowed upon you via the family, and finances will benefit. If you stay positive and face the challenges with true courage, you will succeed in surpassing expectations.
★GEMINI {May 22–June 21}
Something communicated to you via friends or timely meetings of like-minded people, can be a propelling force for change, evoking in you something primal. The more courageous you are, the more the synchronicity comes back.
★CANCER {June 22–July 22}
There’s a strong force for change encouraging you to branch out; it is likely you will be reluctant to follow the orders from those who have the power to boss you around. Be too rebellious though and you could well be forced to start over.
★LEO {July 23–Aug 22}
Sometimes opportunities only come along every so often. There’s a plane and you want in. Are you going to just sit there and expect the stairs of the plane to cup your feet and carry you onboard? All you have to do is get up and walk on. That’s the hardest part of the journey: starting.
★VIRGO {Aug 23–Sep 22}
Jerking responsibilities of a joint nature may not prove the most efficient way to wash your hands of a deal. There’s an air of serious creativity about you and really what’s needed is an outlet. Make a move into a creative world.
★LIBRA {Sep 23–Oct 22}
While we are the sum of all that we have been, that does not mean the future can’t turn around and surprise us. You’ve never been more in touch with the future, but how can others share your vision if you keep it to yourself? Believe in your insights.
★SCORPIO {Oct 23–Nov 21}
We are all subject to change as nothing can be fixed in life, even statues go missing – is there nothing sacred left? If you feel shaken up by this week’s events, allow yourself to be open to what life is trying to help you adapt to and uncover.
★SAGITTARIUS {Nov 22–Dec 20}
Unexpected activities which push you beyond your usual sense of expression may be the spark that sets your world aflame. Growth and change are yours for the taking; your values may have to come under the microscope as it’s the small things that are making a big difference.
★CAPRICORN {Dec 21–Jan 19}
When you change your life irrevocably for the better and bravely cast aside all that is old and outmoded, will you remember that some of what has been was good? On your journey to greater refinement you need to be selective about that which you keep and that which you discard.
★AQUARIUS {Jan 20–Feb 19}
How much can a person learn when they think they already know everything? While you ponder that curious question an opportunity arises for you to be a little less sure about what you know. You are ready to move forwards onto greater awareness.
★PISCES {Feb 20–Mar 20}
You will need the stimulation of friends who have some kind of gravitas that hooks you into a deeper awareness of life’s undercurrents. With a little sweet talking you can wangle your way out of a joint financial deal that you felt tied you down. Working relations go well and can be a lot of fun. As we’re not sure when Wills will be king, but we’re pretty sure he will be sometime, that means a number of people are dead keen to get a look at who might follow. And what will it take to raise a modern monarch? Calpol?
Derren Brown: Svengali Channel4, 9pm This is going to be good and it’s going to be mind-bending. We can deduce this from a number of factors: firstly, this is a recording of Derren Brown’s Olivier awardwinning theatre show. That means people in the know think it’s ace. Secondly, it was recorded this year, meaning it has to be his best ever. Natch.

Shameless Channel 4, 10pm A very different kind of family from the Ewings in terms of economics, but probably not such a jump when it comes to ethics. If this lot found oil on the estate you can bet they’d be flogging the stuff in cider bottles before teatime. Dom springs a surprise on Gloria: their birth mother, Hazel. Daggers at dawn.
Be Your Own Boss BBC3, 9pm A Dragons’ Den for the ‘yoof’ culture, entrepreneur Richard Reed (him behind the success story that is Innocent smoothies) is on the hunt for the next generation of go-getters with bright new ideas. thursday 20 Who Does Your Daughter Look Up To?: Tonight ITV1, 7.30pm Apparently – and with a loaded question like that in the title it will probably be of little surprise to most – little girls are more likely to look up to reality stars and footballers’ wives than successful businesswomen or athletes. Penny Marshall speaks to Amy Childs and others about it.
Location, Location, Location Channel 4, 8pm Phil and Kirstie are coming to East Sussex in this new series, hunting for a period flat near our very own Brighton and Hove for Ashlee Newton, and a first home packed with renovation opportunities for Colin Amery and Robin Balance. Time to covet your neighbours’ new property love. Just one more bedroom...
New Girl E4, 9.30pm It’s all about falling into bad habits this week, as both Jess and Nick look like they could be hooking up with their dastardly exes – oh no! Not those nasty people we learned to hate so much in the first series! Yup. And Winston gets a painful souvenir of his wild night out with his boss. Best not make it a habit, dude.
