Brighton Lights 48 Could you run a marathon? The Running Man Dan Lawson ran eight in a row without stopping and in his own laid back way he tells presenter Guy Lloyd: “That didn’t involve sleep.” Dan is on our Brighton Lights studio sofa with rock band Kovak in our new episode of Brighton Lights. Teenager Melissa Collidge was diagnosed with cancer last summer and her story is continued in Jay Legate’s film Melissa’s World. “It’s nice, people knowing what it’s like to go through it” she says, and this is reality TV as it should be IMHO. Meanwhile, Jenni Davidson reports on The Waste House – yes a house made completely out of rubbish, and no that’s not Guy Lloyd’s student home! Caroline Lucas lays the first stone and Guy’s guests discuss how clean or wasted their houses are. Brighton Lights is at thelatest.tv. Watch this and other shows now including Bmusic’s Noise Reel.

Political roots haunt Greens If a tree is known by its fruits, the campaign to stop an elm being felled has shown the true colours of people living near the Seven Dials. Frank le Duc reports

A

silent elm tree next to the Seven Dials has asked an awful lot of questions of many people over the past few weeks. For a few days it was home to two protesters trying to prevent council contractors from cutting it down. And it has been the focus of some intense scrutiny of politicians and officials as they wrestle with principles, process and pragmatism. The Green administration has been reminded of one of the sayings of St Basil: “A tree is known by its fruit and a man by his deeds.” But the decision in question was a cross-party one. Few making the decision – to approve a change to the road layout at the Seven Dials – seemed to appreciate that it would involve felling a mature elm tree. The loss of the elm was not in the original proposal. It seems likely that consultation responses might otherwise have been different. This is a key fact that could help campaigners if they take Brighton and Hove City Council to court. And they have discussed the possibility of a judicial review.

Meeting our needs The prospect of felling the tree came about because those drawing up the

E

ach May we’re lucky enough to host both the most established mixed arts festival and the largest arts festival in England. Both the Brighton Festival and the Brighton Fringe festivals launched recently. The festivals run throughout May, offering a huge variety of drama, music, art, talks and interactive events for residents and visitors to the city. The headline guest director for this year’s Brighton Festival is Michael Rosen, celebrated poet, writer, broadcaster, and former Children’s Laureate. Among the 370 performances and 154 events across the city are discussions exploring

literature and language throughout the ages, ‘earfilms’ which tell stories through only sound, and a wonderful children’s parade. Meanwhile, Brighton Fringe has over 700 events, 165 of which are free to all. In their programme this year are a 360’ inflatable cinema dome, open air Shakespeare in St Ann’s Well Gardens, and tours behind the scenes of Brighton Station. Between them, these two fantastic art festivals attract over 350,000 people to their events and performances, and bring tens of millions of pounds to the local economy. These festivals showcase global stars, but also give a platform to many local organisations and

In protest One of the two people who camped up the tree, Stephen Hendry, said: “As a consequence of this campaign, I feel motivated to stand as a councillor for the Greens. It’s the first time I’ve been up a tree for a protest. I was totally and utterly petrified. I even screamed at one point. I honestly thought I was going to die.” He spent two days and nights up the tree with Tom Druitt who is best known as the boss of the Big Lemon bus company. Mr Druitt has previously camped in a tree to protest against a road scheme. And as a result of his six-week protest in Combe Haven against the Hastings and Bexhill link road, he was arrested and charged with aggravated trespass and obstructing a High Court official. He denies the charges and is expected to stand trial in the autumn. He said: “This is on my doorstep. Everybody involved lives within about 50 yards of the Seven Dials. We went up the tree on Wednesday evening [6 March] and came down

the big issue late on Friday when the council agreed to a stay of execution. Senior officers said that they would look at suggestions and we’re working with them to try to find an alternative.” His partner, Green councillor Alex Phillips, was part of the council’s Transport Committee which approved the Seven Dials scheme. On Twitter she said: “Most of the public didn’t know about the elm being taken down. It clearly wasn’t explicit enough in the consultation. I agree with the scheme, just not this. I raised the concerns that were raised with me at the time. The tree wasn’t one of those.”

A different path The tree is in the Brighton Pavilion constituency represented by Green MP Caroline Lucas, who was quick to

companies from our creative sector. In Brighton & Hove we have over 1,500 companies involved in areas like advertising, architecture, design, music, theatre, computer games, television and radio. They’ve established a critical mass of expertise and skills, and continue to attract new companies to the city. Brighton & Hove’s reputation for culture and the arts is also being amplified through our recentlylaunched prospectus for investment in the city, and our Economic Strategy which is currently being refreshed. Support for our local creative industries is critical for our economic future, and we will continue doing all we can to promote Brighton & Hove as an industryleader. Meanwhile I hope everyone enjoys all the events planned for this year.

scheme at the Dials were trying to incorporate responses given during the consultation. One influential response came from Jon Hastie, the involvement officer for the Fed Centre for Independent Living, which helps disabled people. Dr Hastie said: “At present the tree in Vernon Terrace significantly narrows the pathway and creates an unnecessary obstacle for wheelchair users. While we appreciate the need for greenery and trees in any street design, it is important this is done in a way that meets the needs of all users and does not create narrow or uneven streets. We call for this tree to be removed or relocated in the new design of the area.” But even when people living near by were told that a tree would be cut down, they say that they were not told that it would be an elm. Many trees are protected by preservation orders. And in an era when thousands of trees have been lost to elm disease, the sensitivity around the healthy specimen at the Dials is hardly surprising. Some have criticised the Green administration over this issue, even though the Seven Dials scheme was approved by Labour and Conservative councillors too. Yet many of those

campaigning to save the tree are supporters of the Greens.

level of the pavement with porous concrete and realigning the road. He said that the pavement was wider on the opposite side of the road, allowing some give and take. And referring to pavement around the elm, he added: “There’s a wall that impedes the traffic flow. That wall could be purchased and demolished.” When he and Mr Druitt ended their protest, one of the council’s most senior officials, executive director Geoff Raw, said: “The communityapproved design has been widely consulted on, including in a public meeting in December where the need to remove the tree was announced. The decision to proceed was taken by the cross-party Transport Committee in January and includes the planting of ten more trees which would see Seven Dials become even greener. “At the moment the tree to be felled is obstructing people’s view of the junction and oncoming traffic as they cross the road and its root is damaging the footpath, causing accessibility problems. Felling a large elm is not a decision taken lightly. It is an absolute last resort. It’s the council’s dedication to our elms which has ensured that we have the finest collection in the country. We are listening to concerns and we’re happy to look at and consider alternative proposals.”

Root pruning

“Opponents and supporters are watching to see if they can find a solution that keeps them true to their roots” lobby the council about it. She said: “This tree is hugely loved by many people. They don’t want to see it come down. At the very minimum we need to have a round-table discussion with the council, with residents, with tree experts to look at other alternatives that might be possible rather than felling what is clearly a very much-loved tree.” Green activist Duncan Roy was one of the first to make people aware of the threat to the elm. He wrote on his Scrapper Duncan website before

a public meeting last week: “We will not be revisiting the plan to redevelop the Seven Dials roundabout, which has already been subject to a ninemonth public consultation process. The problem was that this process omitted to mention that an elm would be felled, which is very odd because the city of Brighton and Hove is the custodian of the so-called National Elms Collection.” One of the tree-top protesters, Stephen Hendry, said afterwards that the ideas so far included raising the

Local resident Nigel Furness said: “How encouraging to read of local residents and Green activists campaigning to prevent the wanton destruction of the Seven Dials elm. But how depressing to think it is a Green council at the root of these plans. The council claims the buttress roots of the tree are reducing mobility scooter and buggy access on the Vernon Terrace pavement, which in part is true. “The remedy, however, is root pruning – something which until recent years was carried out on a regular three-year basis thus preventing such problems arising in the first place. If the roots are too large, raise the pavement above them on a level slope. As for the point that the elm will restrict drivers’ views of the proposed zebra crossing in Vernon Terrace when turning south off the Dials, simply leave the lights at this point.” The stay of execution was due to last until Friday. The Seven Dials scheme will take until the end of the year. Of course, delays can be costly. But campaigners, politicians and officials are all keen to avoid the even costlier prospect of a High Court battle. They may be mindful too of the words of the post-war US presidential candidate, Adlai Stevenson, who said: “A hypocrite is the kind of politician who would cut down a redwood tree, then mount the stump and make a speech for conservation.” The Greens’ opponents and supporters are watching to see whether they can find a solution that keeps them true to their roots. ■

Up the Albion! Mark Brailsford hears the Fat Lady warming up

I

“Promotion could still happen this season – stranger things have happened”

Shirt sponsors for 2013-14 revealed American Express have been revealed as the club’s new shirt sponsor from next season having reached agreement on a new multi-year deal commencing in July 2013. The agreement will see the iconic American Express brand adorn the front and back of the first-team’s newly-designed shirt, due for release for sale to fans this summer. Club chief executive Paul Barber said: “American Express has proven to be a fantastic partner as our stadium naming rights holder and key partner of our charitable arm, Albion In The Community. To see one of the world’s biggest and most respected companies extend its relationship with us in this way, cementing its position as the club’s main sponsor, is fantastic news for us.” Albion’s new strip will go on sale to supporters later this year. Fans can pre-order the new shirt online now to ensure they are first in line to wear the new Erreamanufactured shirt carrying the American Express logo.

There has been some progress. This team has evolved and continues to do so, although it’s not too late for them to surprise us all and charge back into contention with a few games to go. Granted, without a prolific loan striker or the emergence of one of the development squad players, it’s hard to imagine. To put the Barnsley game into perspective, they were battling for their lives against relegation and those matches are always the toughest at this stage of the season. There is still some way to go and the season isn’t over just yet – it just feels like it. At worst, Albion live to fight another day and have built on last year’s efforts. Finally, who honestly believes that a team showing the inconsistency of Albion this season would thrive in the Premier League if they were to go up? Better perhaps to build again, dominate next season and go up when they are capable of staying there. What’s more, it could still happen this season; stranger things have happened. The fat lady hasn't sung yet (although she has chosen the music and the conductor has made the arrangements).

Jog on the spot The wheels are not quite coming off but there may be a few screws loose, certainly in everyone’s favourite Marmite player, Ashley Barnes. After his last minute sending off at the Reebok Stadium against Bolton Wanderers the knives may be out for a player who really should know better by now. Tripping up the referee is likely to induce the official to flourish a deserved straight red card. Barnes has form in this regard and whilst this column has tried to maintain a supportive tone for this player, after Vincelot and Sparrow fell foul of Gus Poyet for this kind of indiscipline, the question has to be asked: at what point does Gus realise he has a liability in Barnes? Now with Albion down to one striker (one who is still adjusting to the English game), the play-off charge is looking more like a light jog on the spot. Gus Poyet was already talking of signing a loan player, now it could be argued he’ll need more than one, and finding one without a recall clause is hard enough, let alone two. For the detractors of Ashley Barnes the red card and long suspension may be a blessing in disguise, but for those who had hopes that given the chance he would come good and do a Crumplin or Bremner, it looks like they are to be disappointed. One way or the other, the Barnes sending off may have more of an impact than not getting something from a game Albion played well enough to win.

news Paul Barber concluded: “On behalf of the club, I would also like to thank our current shirt sponsor BrightonandHoveJobs.com. Gary and his company have been fantastic partners for our club and we are also delighted to confirm today that on the back of their shirt sponsorship success, BrightonandHoveJobs.com will be extending their support for the club as our new official recruitment partner. “The new deal also includes the back-of-shirt sponsorship, and we would like to thank the current back-of-shirt sponsor Donatello for their long-term and loyal commitment to the football club. The well-known Italian restaurant took on a sponsorship role with the club when it was at its lowest after leaving the Goldstone Ground in 1997 and has had a presence on the shirt during the Priestfield Stadium, Withdean Stadium and American Express Community Stadium eras of the club’s history. We continue to look forward to working with Donatello throughout future years.” More news at www.seagulls.co.uk

Hands off the cricket season!

Photo: Tom Scrace

Poyet’s plea to play to June indicates his frustration with the English game. As he rightly points out, the Championship season does appear to be too long. The lack of a winter break also leads to players not playing at their peak as the season comes to a climax, arguably devaluing the competition. It also works to the advantage of the over physical teams and perhaps punishes the more technical players who can be injury prone, or just plain knackered at this stage of the season. Critics of this way of thinking would have a point were they to say that players, coaches and managers are rather handsomely rewarded for their endeavours, so perhaps there shouldn’t be too much sympathy for the plight of the modern footballer. Are these two contradictory points reconcilable? The suggestion from Mr Poyet that the season should go on until June must however, not go unanswered. English cricket will have something to say about that – the football and cricket season’s overlap badly enough as it is. For people who like both cricket and football this would be unacceptable. Gus though does have a point, something does have to give (just not the cricket!). Can anyone foresee Championship clubs agreeing to go down to 20 clubs? Turkey’s voting for Christmas come to mind. But Gus, hands off the cricket season! Words: Mark Brailsford

Photo: Paul Hazlewood

s that the sound of the fat lady gargling? One point from nine in key away games is a poor return whichever way you look at it. The point at Bristol City was a decent one, and, unlucky as they were at Bolton, Albion should have got something from the game. The most disappointing result was the one at Barnsley (this coumn was written pre-Palace – doh!) and whilst it would be easy to blame a poor refereeing performance, this has become an all too familiar refrain of late. Most fans would accept that Albion haven’t been consistent enough this season to clinch a play-off place. Disappointment abounds and it’s a similar story to last season when Albion fell away just when it mattered.

BRIGHTON WRITES

Andrew Kay Singular sensation

Sponsored by Bardsley’s Fish & Chips

O

bsessed – me? You don’t know the half of it. A theatre fan since my early teens, I have kept nearly every programme from every play, show and concert. It’s an immense hoard, a forest of ephemera and, according to Mr R, a pile of old junk. But for me it is also a catalogue of a cultural past that has enriched my life. I don’t think I would have ever been any good on stage, but I live my theatrical dream vicariously through the shows that I see. And few have had the impact that A Chorus Line has had. I was at the first night in London’s Drury Lane Theatre back in 1976. I took my mum to the matinee on my 21st birthday 12.02.77, and my best friend a week later. I saw the American cast six times and the English cast six more. I have since seen a touring production which was not bad, a school’s production – edgy for schools I know – that was excellent despite a few editor’s cuts (rape, it seems, is not a suitable topic for teenagers to sing about but other equally ‘difficult’ topics were). I’m not going to discuss the terrible movie save to suggest that it is not to be watched under any circumstances. Imagine my delight then, when it was announced that there would be a revival production at London’s Palladium Theatre. I leapt on a pair of tickets as if they would have life-saving qualities. I hoped that they would have life-enhancing qualities, I also

“Two hours later, no interval, I left the theatre on a cloud of joy” feared that my memories would be crushed by a production that did not, or perhaps could not, live up to those memories. The train journey was a nightmare, packed due to failures, and my mind was racing, filled with the songs (I know every word). I wanted to love it and I wanted Mr R to love it as much as I do.

The theatre was packed, not a spare seat to be seen, and the stage was set exactly as the original production. I leafed through the programme and my heart lifted when I saw that this was to be as close to the original as possible. Selfish maybe, to want things unchanged, but also a belief that the period setting was vital to the sense of the work. Two hours later, no interval, I left the theatre on a cloud of joy. I loved the show, every moment of it, and I loved that they had seen fit to respect it. A Chorus Line grew out of interviews with Broadway hoofers. Those stories were melded into an unusually stark show that probes why anyone would want to put themselves on the line, the chorus line, for a career that would be short, filled with disappointments, injury and pain. The hoofers are damaged but brave and they have one audition in which to prove their worth and gain that place in the show. The cast were superb, it depends very much on not being a stage full of names and apart from two, Scarlett Strallen and John Partridge, this is true. Strallen and Partridge are excellent as the two who have made made it, Zach as a director is focused and single minded, Cassie has had a taste of stardom but her Hollywood dream has not panned out, just as their affair had failed. Emotionally fuelled the stories are strong enough, but to this you must add the magic of the late Marvin Hamlisch, a song writer of immense talent. I challenge anyone not to come out singing at least three of the shows list of hit songs. It’s an all singing, all dancing, thought provoking evening that, cocooned as it is in its original setting, works as well as it did all those years ago. When something works this well why mess with it? It certainly gets five very shiny stars from me. For full details and tickets go to www.achoruslinelondon.com or call 0844 412 2957

IS ADELE LA BOUND?

Is Adele planning a move to LA? After securing herself a seaside property alongside her London pad it’s now rumoured that the Brit Award winner Tom Odell, hair secrets of Kate Oscar/Grammy/Brit Award-winning singer might up sticks to America. Moss revealed, plus Adele, Rizzle Kicks & more According to sources speaking to the Daily Mirror Adele has noticed the ‘benefits’ of bringing up a child stateside, explaning: “They can SPOTTED be outside, enjoying ! Big Brother ’s Pete wea the weather and skull print on ring a loving life out of Circus. And esie in Preston the spotlight. She could es! afford to put a studio in her house. That way she could beaver away on new music without having to worry.” It’s an interesting idea, and no doubt tempting for the Brit – who has a five-month-old son with Brightonian boyfriend Simon Konecki – but we’re not too sure we believe it yet. Just last month Adele purposefully declared that she would not be moving over the pond any time soon, explaining via video link from the US (as she collected a Brit Award for Skyfall): “I’m not living here by the way, just in case you think that, I’m coming home!” Please do, Adele!

TOP CHOICE R

ecent BIMM graduate Tom Odell did a homecoming gig at The Haunt last week. After winning the Brit Award for Critics Choice, which has previously been awarded to the likes of Florence & The Machine and (most overused star of 2012) Emeli Sande, the blonde haired Brightoner has been hailed as the next big thing. His album, Long Way Down, is scheduled for an April release, following the single ‘Hold Me’. Brighton’s music scene keeps on growing!

KATE MEETS KATE FOR A HIGH-PROFILE COLLABORATION

Our very own Kate Wilson from Trevor Sorbie Brighton is always ahead of the game when it comes to hair-care, so we weren’t surprised to see her cuddling up to the iconic supermodel and new face of Kérastase hair care: Kate Moss. Last week the high profile collaboration was celebrated with an exclusive party thrown by the model at the exclusive One Mayfair club, London. Kate Wilson was on hand to see the unveiling of Kérastase’s Couture Styling range, of which the Super is the first celebrity ambassador. Working gently tousled waves, Miss Moss showed off the kind of locks we’ll be lusting over this summer. Her first campaign for the firm’s debut styling range will appear in May, but you can catch a behind-the-scenes preview of the ‘K Manifesto’ online. Pop into the Nile Street salon, Brighton, to chat with the Trevor Sorbie team for more info!

SUNNY OUTLOOK Last Thursday we attended the private view of design duo Kai and Sunny’s group art show in Soho, London. Being 50 per cent Brightonian-based, we were excited to see the fantastic art works and snoop on their celebrity friends. The event went with a bang and the exhibition runs until 6 April. www.pertweeandersongold.com

RIZZLE KICK’S SNOW DAY

In case you hadn’t noticed it snowed pretty heavily last week and when disasters like this strike it effects plebs and celebs alike! Rizzle Kicks tweeted pictures from the carnage across the East Sussex streets as they travelled to and from a workshop they ran at Brighton Youth centre. “Snow be effin people up yo” they helpfully announced. Pretty accurate, if you ask us. Christina Toimela learns that it’s good to be proud of your work

How the internet is changing our brains

W

I

hen I was going to school my dad once told me: “I don’t care what you do for a living as long as you do it so well that you can be proud of it.” It‘s stuck with me and I have learned to spot the talents who love their work. Serena Brown is a 26-year old Londoner who moved into Brighton last December. Whilst cutting my hair she was chatting away about the differences in hairdresser training in different countries and all the career opportunities hairdressers have. I have never met anyone so excited about hairdressing before; her passion was inspiring. It turns out that despite her young age Serena had already owned a hair salon in Notting Hill. She got into hairdressing at the age of 15 in order to finance her dancing auditions that took her to the West End. Serena ended up being very good at hairdressing and instead of a dancing career she joined hair salon franchise Headmasters. In 2008, at the age of 21, she got a bank loan and opened a successful shop together with her previous manager.

“In Brighton everything goes and no one cares” Serena moved to Brighton to move in with her boyfriend. She had already sold her business and was thinking of a career change. She realised that despite both her and her business partner being perfectionists they had very different views and she was more laid back: “I don’t see things as risk and I don’t feel fear. I go with the flow. If it’s going to work, it’s going to work.“ Serena describes the difference between London and Brighton: “In London some customers insist on coloring their hair every two weeks. People are suited and booted. Everyone cares about their looks and not just anything goes. In Brighton everything goes and no one cares.” At present, Serena is still in hairdressing, being employed by others. She says: “For some people their hair is everything. I want to be the one who styles their hair and makes it the best it can be. I want them to say ‘I’m wearing Serena’s hair’.” Every two weeks Serena goes to London to style hair. She is currently saving up money in order to study medicine. Something tells me she is going to succeed. Do you know any people who have really inspired you in Brighton? We’re not looking for celebrities. Not ordinary, but extraordinary. Contact Christina: christina.toimela@gmail.com

said a few weeks ago that I’d précis an article I’d written on how the internet is changing our brains and why I felt, after extensive ‘research’, that there was more to this online dating lark that meets the eye. The article was called Mind Change, which is a term coined by Baroness Susan Greenfield of Bad Science infamy. She gets a tough time occasionally because she voices ideas and opinions she hasn’t yet proved. But to a writer and fantasist she’s fascinating because of that. I couldn’t prove that engaging in relationships which took place (at least in part) online had a negative impact on my life and happiness, but I didn’t need to because the bad taste left in my mouth informed my instinct that something wasn’t right. What was wrong was the application of false empathy. We’re all “Online we’re used to inhabiting an online 2D metropolis, but what happens when we start co-habiting restricted to two in 2D? Sociologist and psychologist Sherry Turkle is author of Alone Together and she senses: sound believes we’re developing, “the illusion of companionship without the demands of and vision” friendship.” She says” “Those little devices in our pockets are so psychologically powerful that they don’t only change what we do, they change who we are.” Greenfield suggests we’re experiencing ‘cognitive overload’ and using her comparison to climate change explains how the plasticity of our brains makes them highly adaptable. A fascinating experiment, conducted by Alvaro Pascual-Leone, shows us that what the brain fantasises and what it actions have a remarkably similar impact on the pre-frontal cortex. In face-to-face communication words have 10 per cent impact, eye contact/body language have 55 per cent, voice (tone of) has 35 per cent, then smaller impulses like pheromones/physical contact make up the rest. Online we’re restricted to two senses: sound and vision. A survey of 14,000 students at the University of Michigan showed a 30 per cent drop in empathy over the past three decades, accelerated dramatically in the last decade. Have you noticed any changes in your behaviour since the social media explosion? A bit ADD? Greenfield explained that the cycle of excitement, addiction and reward experienced in a high-speed 2D environment is causing high levels of dopamine (the addiction hormone) to be released. Could it be that our machines are training us to respond, like Pavlov’s dog? Towards the end of the article I predicted a rise in fetishism and kink (that was before the kink craze circa Summer ’12). I ask if our over-exposure is leading to incrementally accumulated PTSD and detachment. Of course, we could just call it evolution. That’s just the way things are now, right? But I don’t like this revolving door, disposable relationship treadmill we all seem to be on. Turkle says: “Human relationships are rich and they’re messy and we clean them up with technology... Listen to each other, including the boring bits, because it’s when we hesitate, or stumble, or lose our words that we reveal ourselves to each other.” You can read my full article, Mind Change, at http://vanessaaustinlocke.wordpress.com – Portfolio – Features – Mind Change.

14 L7 INTERVIEW

ALIVE&KICKING

One of the most successful of UK bands, Simple Minds are back on the road for a Greatest Hits tour. Jeff Hemmings spoke with frontman Jim Kerr

H

ugely successful, Simple Minds have topped America’s Billboard chart, released six number one albums in the UK and have hit the top spot in countless other countries around the globe. With over 60 million albums sold worldwide, they are one of the UK’s most successful bands. They are about to embark on a UK tour as well as releasing a new Greatest Hits package to coincide. The core of the band are the remaining two original members (and childhood friends), singer Jim Kerr and Charlie Burchill (guitars and keyboards), plus drummer Mel Gaynor who has been with them on and off since 1982. “That’s been the biggest reward, my long term relationship with Charlie Burchill,” says Jim Kerr. “Honestly, he called me yesterday and was jumping up and down because he had found this piece of music that had gone missing for about 12 years and he said, ‘I’ve got it and it sounds great’. I was equally as excited about it, and we could have been 17 or 18 again, this piece of a puzzle that was missing. In those moments we haven’t thought about what we’ve done or what we’re about to do, it’s just ‘oh, great!’ and off we go. In a world where things have changed so much it’s great to have something that hasn’t changed much at all.” Of course, Kerr is the main focal point of the band, the frontman for so many years, and the one who has been a source of so much publicity, whether it's the music of Simple Minds, or his love interest, including that Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders, whom he married in the ’80s. Still, kerr and Burchill have been pretty much equal partners over the years. “He’s a clever so and so,” says Kerr of Burchill. “He may be in the background, but he calls the shots as much as I do. If you met Charlie now he’d probably be more sociable than me off the bat, but he’s never really clicked with the promo stuff and he does what he does. He leaves it up to me to do the mythologising and analysing.” Born out of the punk era, in the city of Glasgow, the band were originally called Johnny & The Abusers, eventually releasing one single, ‘Saints And Sinners’, and splitting on the actual day of the song’s release. The shadow of David Bowie loomed large over punk, post-punk and new wave, and the band took a lyric from his ‘Jean Genie’ song, re-christening themselves Simple Minds.

In 1979 they released their debut album Life In A Day, which revealed Magazine, Bowie and Roxy Music as major influences. Over the next few albums they strived to forge their own identity through experimental albums such as Real To Real Cacophony, Empires and Dance, Sons And Fascination and Sister Feelings Call. Simple Minds recently toured, specifically performing tracks from these first five albums: "Yeah, we played tracks from the albums before the breakthrough [of New Gold Dreams, their commercial breakthrough, released in 1982], stuff we hadn’t played for years. We discovered that some of the songs we hadn’t played for 30 years! They were so long ago since we played them they were refreshing again. It’s amazing how cyclical they become – you look at a song and think: ‘well, that’s been and gone, we won’t be playing that again’, and then lo and behold, we hear and see it through new ears and eyes. That's one of the big plusses of a big catalogue."

“I never have a problem with getting motivated to get on stage...” Simple Minds Circa 1982

It was the release of ‘Promised You A Miracle’ and the subsequent New Gold Dreams album of 1982 that propelled the band to stardom, the rest of the decade marked by ever bigger tours and stadium gigs, as they moved away from new wave and new romanticism to commercial pop and rock. Kerr became a major celebrity, helped along by his marriage to Chrissie Hynde, and the band finally cracked the US thanks to the use of ‘Don’t You (Forget About Me)’ in the smash film The Breakfast Club. But, like so many of their contemporaries, things began to unravel during the late ’80s, including the dissolution of Kerr's marriage, and the departure of key personnel, in effect reducing the band to the core of Kerr and Burchill. “We were knackered. We were desensitised. We were lads who had grown up together, but we were getting tired of each other,” Kerr has previously said. “I probably wasn’t the easiet to work with – I was always pushing – I was a bit anti-social and I had lead singeritis. Although they never again reached those heady heights of fame in the ’80s, they continued to operate throughout the ’90s and noughties, releasing well received albums such as 2005’s Black & White 050505 and Graffiti Soul in 2009 which became their first album in 14 years to make the UK top ten. Over the last couple of years the band have concentrated on their Greatest Hits tours including the 5X5 Tour where they played five tracks from each of their first five albums. At a time when many younger bands are exploring the music of the post punk era, it seems that Simple Minds’ music is being re-appraised and warmly welcomed for its inventive and futuristic touches that seemed so normal then. Take ‘Life In A Day’: “When we were rehearsing that, one of the management team, albeit a bit younger than us, came in and said: ‘What’s that new song, it sounds great!’ And we’d go, ‘what new song? It’s 30 years ago’! It seems to be the way; you see that in design, in fashion, in architecture, in and out of fashion. If you wait long enough they become in fashion again, or someone current does a riff on them and makes them contemporary,” says Kerr, who spends most of his time divided between Sicily and France thses days. As for the new material they are curently working on he says that revisiting their past is having an effect. “Because I spent so much time recently with those first albums, some of the stuff we have been coming out with seems inspired by those early electronic styles. The idea is to bridge that new stuff.” The upcoming tour will feature the band playing two sets, the second set likely to be a run through all the singles that qualified for the UK top 40. “The opening set we’ll play songs from every period; one way or another that should keep most people happy. “I never have a problem with getting motivated to get on stage and tour these days. I feel blessed to have had this opportunity. I’ve met so many people, other artists who don’t enjoy touring. I think deep down, they don’t appreciate what they’ve got and I realised a lot of them aren’t really cut out for it, for packing a suitcase and heading out year after years. We were born to do it. In terms of motivation, it's very simple: we manage somehow to put ourselves into the ears of the audience. A lot of them may be seeing you for the first and never see you again. And then there are others who will be thinking, ‘it’ll be good, but not like the old days’, and that’s quite a challenge to leave people thinking, ‘that was much better than I thought it would be’. And I think that because we have those attitudes, it means we give it our all every night and hopefully they’ll tell their mates the next day and it gives us a future!” Simple Minds, Monday 8 April, Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, 7pm, £49.50/£37.50 Simple Minds: Celebrate – The Greatest Hits +, out 25 March

irect from the West End, Broadway and 25 countries around the globe, comes the spy thriller The 39 Steps. Hailed as ‘a joyous version of the Alfred Hitchcock classic’ by a national newspaper, The 39 Steps is brilliantly and hilariously recreated as the smash hit Olivier Award Winning Best New Comedy. The 39 Steps visits Theatre Royal Brighton for a week long run from Monday 8 – Saturday 13 April. This blissfully funny show follows the incredible adventures of handsome hero Richard Hannay, complete with stiff-upper-lip, British gung-ho and pencil moustache as he encounters dastardly murders, double-crossing secret agents, and, of course, devastatingly beautiful women. This inventive and gripping comedy thriller features four fearless actors playing 139 roles in 100 minutes of fast-paced fun and thrilling action. The production is based on John Buchan’s 1914 spy thriller The Thirty Nine Steps, and adapted for the stage by Patrick Barlow (The National Theatre of Brent). Asked about his approach to adapting the Hitchcock classic, Barlow commented: “I was particularly interested in giving Hannay a real psychological journey to go on, to mirror the adventure story. In my version, Hannay starts as a man isolated, really lost in despair, without the ability to love or even feel and then he makes a chance life-affirming decision. To go to a West End show! And lo and behold – everything changes! He meets three women and they save him. As women tend to. He finds his heart. And saves the country into the bargain.” The 39 Steps is directed by Maria Aitken, with design by Peter McKintosh, lighting by Ian Scott, sound by Mic Pool and movement by Toby Sedgwick. It is presented by Edward Snape for Fiery Angel and Tricycle London

Bitter & Twisted First seen in the Autumn Harvest Food Festival programme in 2011, Bitter & Twisted returns in Spring 2013 in a tweaked format. Ales are the new black and here in Great Britain we make some of the best. On the night you’ll sample beers from WJ King, Arundel, Hepworths, Brighton Bier, and Brighton’s new North Laine pub and microbrewery. And as Sussex is also famed for some great ciders, we’re also opening the contest to some of our favourite producers including Wobblegate and an allnew cider brew from Stopham Estate. In an evening, hosted by yours truly, pitching the best of local ales against others from further afield, beer aficionados and experts will present their favorites, matched with delicious local pub grub from the kitchens of Pub du Vin, for an audience vote that will see at the end of the evening a Bitter & Twisted winner. Dome Room, Hotel du Vin, Ship Street, Brighton Good Friday, 29 March 2013, 7pm–10pm (approx) Advance tickets £22 include all beer, cider and food

Extreme Food Challenge Following the popularity of the Chilli Eating Challenge in previous festivals, we’re moving to the next level with the Extreme Food Challenge. Ten victims – err, contestants – will be challenged to eat and drink a variety of ‘delicious’ morsels. The twist being that, whilst edible and even delicacies, these aren’t your average run-of-the-mill food stuffs. There’ll be heat, there’ll be some very unusual canapés, and they’ll definitely be things to make you squirm! The winner is the last man – or woman – standing! Places are limited so to secure a place at the hottest table in town please register your interest by emailing nat@brightonvisitor.com with your name, mobile number, age, gender and why you should be a contestant. Obviously you'll need to be available in Brighton on Easter Saturday too! Live Food Show marquee, Victoria Gardens, Brighton Easter Saturday, 30 March 2013, 5pm Free entry

Sussex Gourmet Bus Tour April sees the return of our hugely popular Sussex Gourmet Bus Tour – the perfect day out for anyone passionate about Sussex food and drink. Our day starts with a breakfast on the bus as we head to our first stop. This April we’ll be visiting a local vineyard, brewery and cider maker, alongside a couple of local food producers and – of course – a delicious gastropub lunch. I will be coming along with my Jeremy Paxman hat on to run a fun food quiz on the bus, and we’ll be joined by the team from La Cave á Fromage who’ll be talking you through some great Sussex cheeses. Your ticket includes a full day of food and drink, so book early... and come hungry! Saturday 20 April 2013 Departs 9.30am from the Old Steine Bus Stop Q only Arrive back in Brighton around 6.30pm Advance tickets £65 include transport, tours, all food and wine including a two-course gastropub lunch

Supertasters: The Science of Wine Find out if you’re a Supertaster taster and if you are, how does it affect your sense of taste? Can you tell white wine from red wine when the wines are in black wine glasses? Can you identify the smells in wines? Taste and smell the effect of different alcohol and acid levels in the same wine! Dr Belinda Kemp from Plumpton College will take you through wine science experiments and tastings to introduce you to the science behind the art of winemaking. This fun session is suitable for all lovers of wine, no matter what your level of knowledge. Easter Monday, 1 April 2013, 3pm–5pm (approx) Meeting Room, Myhotel, Jubilee Street, Brighton Advance tickets £25 There are plenty of other events, many of which are free, taking place across the city, all of which you can find on the festival’s website www.brightonfoodfestival.com, tickets for paid events may be booked on the website (for some events you may be re-directed to a festival partner’s website).

ROAD TO HILL

On sale this week…

HARRY HILL – SAUSAGE TIME!, Theatre Royal Brighton, 12 March 2013 ✪✪✪✪✪

F

rom the moment Harry Hill entered the auditorium from the stalls, hidden behind a bare striped mattress commentating with amplified tomfoolery, we were in another world of boundless comic possibilities. Mixing sharp one-liners with shaggy dog stories, ridiculous stunts, a spot of audience participation (most especially the closing ‘bit’ of act one, in a set-up familiar to all fans of Hill's TV Burp), along with impressive dance skits, and a hilarious wordless attempt with a bucket of water involving everything from a straw to a funnel – this felt like the full force of Hill's comedic arsenal, and you got the distinct feeling more could be hovering in the wings at any second. ‘Sausage Time’ was as tightly scripted and staged as any orchestral symphony with no flab – and at one point I even thought he may well have had to storyboard in when he could draw breath. Hill, his house band and collective friends were utterly committed to entertaining us, skipping seamlessly from a raucous brawl to perfectly synced Shakespeare. After two hours (including intermission) I left exhausted with laughter and with a lightness in my hearts that even the snow couldn't dampen. And an overwhelming urge to get an iced lolly, regardless of the weather. Utter silly, filled-with-mayhem glee. Victoria Nangle

TOM ODELL

Sunday night was a triumphant homecoming for Tom Odell, the rising star from Chichester who studied music in Brighton. It was Mother’s Day and his mum and grandmother joined the sell-out crowd at The Haunt, bopping on the balcony to a deconstructed cover of ‘Honkey Honk Woman’. For much of the gig the audience stood silent and mesmerised by the talent on stage as the 22 year old delivered a pianothumping, vocally accomplished and mature performance, way beyond his years. The applause after each song was rapturous however and the gig was a pleasure, a joy and a delight. The Haunt, 10 March 2013 ✪✪✪✪✪ Elizabeth Hughes Did you disagree with our verdict on any of these shows?

STIFF LITTLE FINGERS

Belfast punk rockers, SLF, are still packing them in after 36 years, performing a strong set of popular classics and new material from their long-awaited forthcoming album. Still politically working class, their audience was full of mostly male loyal originals, singing along so loudly that at times it felt like a football match. All amiably supported by the original punk loon, Ed Tudor Pole. The evening suitably proved that punk isn’t dead, it’s just settled down into an uneasy middle-age of widening girths and balding heads. Concorde 2, 8 March 2013 ✪✪✪✪ Bradley Pilcher

WHAT’S ON STAGE

L7

>THIS WEEK’S MUST SEES

BRIGHTON

STAGE: I HAVE BEAUTIFUL LIPS Mike Leigh’s West End hit Abigail’s Party comes to the Theatre Royal Brighton

T

o have missed out on the legend that is Abigail’s Party one must have been living the life of a hermit since 1977. Back then it hit the small screen in a production that starred Alison Steadmand and Janine Duvitski, more recenty seen as the sexually promiscuous swinging star of TV’s Benidorm. It instantly became a hit, satirising the newly aspirational and upwardly mobile nouveau middle class that emerged at the time. Now Leigh’s classic comedy comes to the Theatre Royal Brighton, and Hannah Waterman, Martin Marquez, Samuel James, Katie Lightfoot and Emily Raymond star in one of the most popular plays written. Donna Summer is on the stereo. Cheese and pineapple are on the coffee table and the get-together from hell is about to begin. Beverly, and estate agent husband Laurence, have invited round new neighbours Tony and Ange and nervous divorcee Sue, twitchy about the party her 15-year-old daughter, Abigail, is throwing over the road. As Beverly plies the guests with alcohol, cigarettes, Demis Roussos and nibbles, this horribly compelling evening descends into drunkenness and debauchery. Comedy, drama and tragedy combine into an iconic piece of theatre. This ruthless and painfully funny observation of the pretensions of suburbia comedy became an instant classic when it first appeared as a BBC Play For Today in 1977, the year of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee. Mike Leigh is one of Britain’s most influential theatre and film directors. His numerous awards have included Best Comedy award for the stage play Goose Pimples, a BAFTA for Outstanding Contribution to Cinema, National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Film for Life Is Sweet, Best Director Award at Cannes Film Festival for Naked, the Palme d’Or at Cannes for Secrets And Lies and an Oscar for Topsy Turvy. Lindsay Posner recently directed the all-star revival of Noises Off (tour visits Eastbourne in April) at the Old Vic and Butley, A View from the Bridge and Fiddler on the Roof in the West End and Relatively Speaking on tour and soon to open in the West End. Theatre Royal Bath Productions are one of the most highly regarded producers of touring and West End productions. Recent productions include:

Upcoming productions include West End transfers of Relatively Speaking and The Judas Kiss, a West End premier of Quartermaine’s Terms, which premiered at Theatre Royal Brighton, starring Rowan Atkinson. Theatre Royal Brighton Monday 1 – Saturday 6 Apr Box office 08448 717 650 www.atgtickets.com/brighton STAGE: THE DEVIL KEEPS TUGGING On 31st March last year, after 16 years in office, The Unofficial Mayor of Brighton donned his chains in front of a packed Dome Concert Hall for the last ever Brighton – The Musical. The man then stood on the seashore and waited. The songs began to drift in with the winds and the tides. Terry Garoghan now returns to Brighton’s The Old Market with something new and something different – The Devil Keeps Tugging – a musical cabaret about his on/off relationship with The Devil, and his general confusion with life in general. There will much of the Terry so well know to Brighton audiences... the new songs of course, the personal stories, the outright lies, and all the usual flirtatious banter. The show will also mark the launch of an album – The Aunty Flo Slide Show – all music and lyrics written by Terry, all displaying his usual trademark humour. He will be accompanied by the amazing cello of Miss Angie Wilson. Angie is an established and highly respected classical cellist, who is very much at home performing with The English Chamber Orchestra at The Royal Festival Hall. What, if anything, does an ex-unofficial mayor have left to offer? Is there life after Hove? How do you get two icecream cones to stay stuck to your head? WHAT’S ON MUSIC&CLUBS 23 of authenticity as the nu-folk scene gathers pace. However, Stornoway do deliver big time. New album Tales From Terra Firma should consolidate the surprise success they achieved with debut album Beachcomber's Windowsill. Concorde 2, Wed 20 March, 7.30pm, £13

MUSIC: CODY CHESNUTT Cody ChesnuTT's sound springs from the crossroads of soul, funk, and rock. Way back in 2002 he released the somewhat reverential The Headphone Masterpiece but it's only been since last year's psychedelic soul Landing On A Hundred that saw Mr ChesnuTT reemerge as an creative artist, and soul troubadour of note, his modern re-working of Mayfield and Gaye very much part of this zeitgeist. Concorde 2, Tues 19 March, 7pm, £15

MUSIC: EELS Now approaching 50, Mark Everett is Eels, featuring an ever-rotating band, that struck gold with 1996’s Beautiful Freak album, that featured enduring classics Novocaine for the Soul and Susan’s House. This work basically set up Eels’ melancholia pop for life, but he's been both prolific and interesting since, with new album Wonderful, Glorious, another excellent release. MUSIC: BRITISH SEA POWER Jeff Hemmings navigates the rise of this Brighton based band

S

ince the turn of the millennium, British Sea Power have established themselves as one of indie rocks stayers, steering a course that has seen them release five albums with a new one out at the beginning of April, Machineries Of Joy. Made up of the Wilkinson brothers, Hamilton and Yan, Matthew Wood, Martin Noble, Abi Fry and Phil Sumner, and once featuring Brakes frontman Eamon Hamilton amongst their ranks, the band re-located to Brighton as British Air Powers, before renaming themselves upon release of their debut. Their Club Sea Power are the stuff of legend, taking place at rock institutions such as the Freebutt and The Lift (now The Hope), and featuring such acts as Sussex's first family of folk, The Coppers, and incorporating a 1940s fashion show. Their debut album The Decline Of British Sea Power was a word-of-mouth success, setting the template for their dense amalgamation The Cure, Joy Division, The Pixies and alt-indie in general. But it was their live shows that fed through to popular success, their stage shows featuring stage foliage, audience participation and occasionally an eight foot bear... They have also used unusual spaces and venues for their shows over the years; including the Carnglaze caves in Cornwall, Newhaven Fort, Berwick Village Hall, and the Czech embassy. Obsessed with ‘40s Britain, and anything a little bit weird and wonderful, culturally speaking, their Mercury nominated album directly asked the question: Do You Like Rock Music? to which the answer from their fans was an unequivocal Yes! Continuing to explore the outer reaches, and to question the tried and tested routes of normal bands, they've created their own minifestival at the Tan Hill Inn, Britains's highest pub, set up a club night called Krankenhaus, which gives them the opportunity to bring in their like-minded musician friends, and performed a live soundtrack to the British Film Institutes produced documentary From The Sea To The Land Beyond, a film that uses archive footage to explore the British coast, and which was performed at last year's Cine City festival in Brighton. The Old Market, Monday 25 March, 7.30pm, £14

WHAT’S ON COMEDY&FILM

COMEDY: PHIL & PHILL’S PERFECT 10 As Phill Jupitus joins Phil Wilding to record their popular podcast, he takes time with Victoria Nangle Hello! So nice to hear you’re back in town – and back with the Perfect Ten. Is this really going to be the very, very, VERY last Perfect Ten podcast? “It will very probably be the last live one but on past evidence, never say never! The logistics of putting it on live are often hamstrung by my absurd schedule and poor organisational skills. (Just ask poor Jon at the Duke’s about THAT!) I don't think it will be the last ten. The more infrequent they are, the more fun I find them.” The Perfect Ten's have been going for quite a while – happy 50th podcast! What are some of your favourite questions that have popped up over the years? “The more absurdist sort of ‘what if’ questions are the best. One I recall involved being attacked by waves of seven year olds twelve at a time and speculating on just how long we could hold out. I love the off kilter inventiveness of some listeners.” Who would you love to just go up and shout ‘Wallop!’ in the face of? “That would be rude. I would love to hear the legendary Bob Hoskins shout it.” The Perfect Ten has listeners all over world – so much so that you make a feature of the many locations. Where would you and Phil absolutely love to record a Perfect Ten if you didn't have to worry about transport or jet lag? “Helsinki and New Zealand. Just for the oddness. Pretty much anywhere to be honest. It's fun to do and a very simple idea. I think technically we still owe one listener the dubious honour of recording one in her house, so we should probably honour that before we go swanning off around the globe.”

COMEDY: JACK DEE After such a strong success last year, Jack Dee has turned around and come right back to Brighton for a second visit on this tour. Already well received, expect the grumpiest of middle aged men to tickle your funny bone mercilessly. Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, Fri 22 Mar, 8pm, £21 COMEDY: MARK THOMAS’ MANIFESTO (WARM UP) In advance of a brand new series of his Sony Award Winning Radio 4 show, Mark Thomas goes back to the country to test out brand new policy ideas and invite comments from the audience. Komedia, Wed 20 March, 7.30pm, £10/8

You and your fellow Phil (Wilding) seem to get on well. Is there any topic you really clash about? “I saw The Clash live. He didn’t. He saw Bill Hicks live. I didn’t. Nine times out of ten, that is our go to bickering point. We’re both quite moody, which paradoxically seems to work rather well for our relationship.” You gave me a rather spiffing recipe for seabass not long ago. Any other culinary tips from the godfather of pop quizzes? “I’m all about the poached haddock and eggs these days... Get a good bit of smoked haddock and poach it either with water or milk for 8 minutes, poach 2 medium eggs for 5 minutes, serve with a sprinkling of chopped parsley and enjoy.” The Perfect 10 with Phil & Phill, Duke Of York’s Picturehouse, Saturday 23 March, 9.30pm, £10

L7 SADE ALI ON CLUB ETIQUETTE This weekend you might get a little drunk, you might not... But it’s more than likely that you or one of your friends will make one of these mistakes... Don’t hold hands: If you want to stand there and hang on to your ‘boy’ or your ‘girl’, that’s fine but the people that I’m referring to are those obnoxious people who insist on making a train whenever they move through a crowd. This is annoying and inconvenient for every single person you jostle and bump with your chain gang. Stop it. No matter how big the club is, you don’t need to have your friends that close at hand. You probably won’t lose them, and if you do, you’ll find them again. And if you don't, you can make new friends. You’re in a club – let go!

Bmusic Introducing Latest TV’s music production arm

A

re you creative, keen and want to make exciting music television? When Latest TV goes live on air regionally this September, Bmusic will be driving the production of the music orientated programming to promote, document and shout with pride about all that makes our corner of the world a musical hotbed. The pilot for our news and gossip show ‘Noise Reel’ has just gone live and we are now keen to push-on by finding eager and productive volunteers for all aspects of the process leading to professional programme creation. This includes: interviewers, presenters, camera operatives, editors, video graphics and animation designers, researchers, sound technicians and more. You might even have a great idea for a series of shows that Bmusic can help you develop for future broadcast. Previous experience isn't necessary as what we value above all is initiative and enthusiasm, plus training can be arranged through Latest TV. The organisation is still in its early stages but among other things we have already; filmed and interviewed at Lout Promotions’ Brighton Rocks night, attended the EP launch party of Black Bonds at Platinum Lace, interviewed the Easy Star All Stars at Concorde 2 and got a sneak preview of filming for The Speakeasy Three and Swing Ninja’s new music video. There is loads more to come and this is the perfect time to become part of the team so join us to find out more at one of our open meetings happening fortnightly. Details will be posted on our social media pages linked below. Many thanks for reading! The Bmusic Team www.facebook.com/BmusicTV www. youtube.com/thisisBmusic

Don’t get camera happy: Most clubs are dark, so none of your pictures will come out well, especially with your lousy Instagram filter. Besides, the last thing you want to look like is the tourist or the desperate fresher girl who is snapping pictures constantly. A million pictures of you wasted is just bad public representation on your Facebook, and the untagging process is brutal. We get that you want to document the evening, and a snap or two is fine. But there’s always the one girl who can’t go two seconds without setting off that flash in everyone’s face (my best friend). Stop worrying about preserving the memories, put down the cameras and just enjoy your night!

Do not harass the DJ: Constantly tapping the DJ on his shoulder whilst he is in the middle of mixing songs is not going to get you any Brownie points. By this point he has already made up his mind whether he is going to play the song you request. If you want to request a song, do not ask for a song that is a completely different genre to what is playing (‘Call Me Maybe’ is not going to go down in a bashment set), because nine times out of ten the DJ will not play it. W

e are Brighton Noise. We’re a collective of music lovers (obsessives even). We have a simple aim: to get more people to more gigs in Brighton. We have a website where we attempt to list every gig in Brighton and Hove, from the Brighton Centre and Dome to the smallest pub. We recommend gigs (we have a wide range of tastes). We preview and review and take some great photographs. A warm welcome to readers of our inaugural column for Latest 7 (and our apologies if the above sounds like a corporate mission statement best read off a whiteboard). Brighton has a British Sea Power vast and diverse music scene and a multitude of venues. It’s easy to get lost amongst the sheer amount of live music; we’ve 508 upcoming gigs listed on our site! Each week we are going to tell you what gigs we think are worth checking out. This week we have an up and coming British band, a legendary American indie explorer, an equally legendary local band, Chap-Hop and punky indie from New Zealand! Just an average week gig-wise in this great city of ours. Tuesday sees Londoners Fiction at The Green Door Store. I saw this lot a few times last year in support slots and at The Great Escape and they got better and better. Joyful ’80s tinged indie with a tropical feel and a great rhythm section which includes the bashing of an empty water cooler bottle. Thursday sees two rather different gigs. Die! Die! Die!, who aren’t quite as scary as they sound, are from New Zealand and at The Green Door Store. A bundle of energy, their live performances are something to behold. Punk, grunge and indie-pop are all thrown into the mix. Support is from Brighton Noise favourites Negative Pegasus. Monday and there’s a clash of indie stalwarts. After a frantic year; their legendary (and bonkers) Krankenhaus nights, a film score and the recording of a long awaited album, local lads (via Cumbria) British Sea Power are at The Old Market. Over at The Dome, Mark Everett’s brilliant Eels are playing in support of their tenth album. More details of these gigs and lots lots more can be found on www.brightonnoise.co.uk

STARS With Val Aviv

★ARIES {Mar 21–Apr 20}

Finally a long awaited burst of fresh air is brought into the mix and you’re ready to tackle a problem head on. You hold the key to a winning formula. Your hidden strength is your ability to make light of tension.

★TAURUS {Apr 21–May 21}

You are slightly more obscured from view as your ruler Venus moves out of the light and into the shadows of your psyche to evaluate the year. This is a great time to wrap up old projects. A good feeling may well prevail despite setbacks or delays.

★GEMINI {May 22–June 21}

A new circle of friends or one particularly wild friend may be the catalyst for a great inner revelation. Remember that all the difficult people we encounter in life are not here to show us how difficult they are, but to show us how ill equipped we are to deal with them.

★CANCER {June 22–July 22}

While you’ve got ideas about where it is you are going, a partner’s vision may clash with yours. You can be seen as recklessly bombastic and uber punk and while that will get you noticed – the shock tactic may have other side effects.

★LEO {July 23–Aug 22}

An inspired time sees you taking an interest in far out cultures or perhaps you are in the mood to embrace entirely different trains of thought. Whatever happens your intuition is razor sharp with fast reactions, so taking a leap of faith will add something special into the mix.

★VIRGO {Aug 23–Sep 22}

Love goes underground and it’s not what happens on the surface that is of paramount importance, but what is happening to you as a consequence. Love gets more passionate than it’s been in a long while, moving you to your core. The current changes you feel are for the better.

★LIBRA {Sep 23–Oct 22}

Your ruler takes an intrepid journey of discovery through the fiery Aries, your opposite sign. Relationships become energised with Mars and Uranus connecting to bring about explosive connections. WARNING: Letting off steam may create fireworks.

★SCORPIO {Oct 23–Nov 21}

A financial opportunity may present itself rather unexpectedly or even forcefully. While a lot of things are up for renewal, thinking long term will help you make the right decisions now. Work that’s fraught with angst is soothed by the influence of Venus.

★SAGITTARIUS {Nov 22–Dec 20}

Welcome to one of the most fun and enjoyable weeks of the year! Make the most of your peaking energy. Could you be more enraptured by the bounty of creation? Love progresses, finances become consolidated while inner security blooms.

★CAPRICORN {Dec 21–Jan 19}

Home improvements or disruptions will have a decidedly positive impact, especially as Venus joins the party to help you stylise as well as renovate. Home is where the heart is so you may as well do what you can to love being there.

★AQUARIUS {Jan 20–Feb 19}

A huge amount of energy could be yours, if you find yourself getting suddenly irritated it could be that you’re not making the best use of the powerful forces that are alive inside you. If you’re single you may meet someone very enigmatic.

★PISCES {Feb 20–Mar 20}

You may not be willing to jump through hoops to get what you want, however you may not need to. You’re the one whose talents arise from your innate cleverness. You are your own asset – by making the most of your skills and promoting yourself, your earning potential is limitless. Elsewhere, of course, Loyd is getting to grips with a certain chicken recipe delivered up by Sharran, the UK’s only female sumo wrestler, and Stacie is being blown away by an array of gluten-free pastries and cupcakes. The thing about this – as Loyd points out before even the first commercial break has had a chance to interject – is that it’s all about the history and the people of Brighton. Whether your child is a tot or a teen, Professor Tanya Byron, Jake Humphrey and a team of experts are filled to the gills with helpful hints and simple techniques as to how to calm the battlefield that can surround going to bed. Interesting stuff.

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation Channel Five, 9pm Isn’t it incredible that in 13 series of the stalwart crime series no two people have been killed in the same way, unless by a serial killer? Remarkable. So, bearing this in mind, tonight the body of a famous music academic is found in the desert stuffed inside a piano. Didn’t see that coming.

666 Park Avenue ITV2, 10pm It’s the annual Drake Halloween costume gala, and you can bet these folk will be looking spooky in their own special way that has nothing to do with the outfits. As Olivia makes her preparations for the social event she is reminded of another Halloween in 1929 when murder and mayhem took over the building. Trouble ahoy!
