Drug lesson for health minister Two former addicts discussed their recovery with government minister and former Brighton hospital doctor Dan Poulter. Frank le Duc reports the big issue
J
en, a 43-year-old mother of three with a history of drug and alcohol addiction and domestic violence, told a government minister how a detox programme saved her life. She spoke to Health Minister Daniel Poulter when he visited Brighton Housing Trust (BHT) earlier this month to learn about the charity’s work with drug addicts. Dr Poulter, who worked as a hospital registrar in Brighton before he became an MP, met BHT and NHS staff as well as some of the people being helped. The 43-year-old former addict had five in-patient detoxes, which had all led to her relapsing, before being assessed by BHT Addiction Services. She said: “I lost everyone, everything I held dear and 26 years of what could have been the best years of my life to alcohol and addiction. I was a dead woman walking when I arrived at the Detox Support Project. Physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually broken. DSP took me in and held me. “The sense of relief to finally feel safe and cared for is overwhelming. As you gradually and gently physically and mentally detox, the staff and volunteers who are
recovered addicts plant the seed of hope – hope for a better life not ruled by drink and drugs, darkness and misery. As the days turn into weeks your courage, your strength grows, you begin to see, you begin to believe that anything is possible. “You see others arrive full of despair and desperation and you see those who were once hopeless alcoholics/addicts, now volunteers who give their time to help the still suffering addict. They give you hope, belief and faith that a better life in sobriety awaits. The Recovery Project is a place of discovery, a place of reallife miracles and in my experience has saved my life and saved me in every way a person can be saved. “Were it not for the Recovery Project there is no doubt in my mind I would not be here to write these words today. The obsession to drink and use has been removed. I wake every day feeling free, instead of feeling full of fear, full of dread. I have regained the ability to trust and to be trusted. I have regained my self-worth, my dignity, my selfrespect and my confidence. “I have learnt how to laugh again. I am free and I am happy. Above all
Brighton & Hove City Council leader Jason Kitcat on the pay & allowances structure
The offer includes three key aspects: 1) A new fair set of allowances for staff. Under current proposals 90% of staff will see very little or no change in their takehome pay. Of those that do, the majority will actually see an increase and a minority will see some detriment, which on average will be less than £20 per week. This is not about budget savings or ‘austerity’ – in fact, based on the current proposal, the council’s pay bill is likely to go up slightly. 2) Anyone who suffers detriment will be generously compensated with a lump sump payment worth roughly three years’ worth of any reduction. 3) We are keen to work with all
I
n 2011 we inherited a deeply flawed and muddled pay and allowances structure from previous political administrations, dating back from when Brighton & Hove merged to become one council. The lowest paid were not getting a living wage and the work that all councils have been doing on resolving equal pay legislation through ‘single status’ for employees’ was unfinished here. So the council is now consulting on proposals to bring in revised pay and allowances for staff.
else, I have hope and faith for the future that my dream to be a good mum to my sons will come true. Coming into the Recovery Project has also given my sister (the gateway to my children) hope, hope that she will get her sister back. The Recovery Project has given me the chance to rebuild bridges, to rebuild my family, to rebuild my life.”
Chaotic Dr Poulter also heard from Gemma, a 47-year-old former addict who had several previous engagements with local drug and alcohol services. She describes her childhood as chaotic and volatile. Her brother committed suicide at the age of 23. She previously tried the Recovery Project and was abstinent for three years before getting into a relationship which led to domestic violence and relapse.
staff, including those in CityClean, to find new opportunities which will help offset the changes. Some staff members are understandably concerned about what the changes mean for them, and this has led to the recent disruption to recycling and refuse services to residents. More vehicles than normal are being found to have problems, and some crews are not collecting additional waste beside a bin and are working more slowly. Resolving pay and allowances issues without any detriment to any member of staff would be totally unaffordable. However during the staff consultation the council welcomes suggestions on how these proposals can be improved in any way which is legal, fair and affordable so that we can resolve this issue once and for all.
“Since coming through the BHT Recovery Project I’ve managed to start rebuilding my life” She said: “I am an addict who picked up drugs at 11 years old. Drug use was quite normal in my family, as my mum was an addict and my dad used to smoke weed all the time. I didn’t have a secondary education, as I was expelled from school at 13 years old. My drug use progressed swiftly over the years using benzos, barbiturates, heroin and crack cocaine and before I knew it I was injecting these drugs.

LATEST NEWS 07 to grow in confidence. As it is requirement that we attend fellowship meetings, I’ve begun building support outside of here and have made solid friendships – especially with women. That’s something I once struggled with. “I can now set healthy boundaries for myself, which for me is something I never even knew about before coming into treatment. I get an opportunity to start working through the 12 Steps which gives me a firm foundation for my recovery, and I’ve learnt that I don’t have to be alone. “I’m building relationships with my family again and looking into doing voluntary work. None of these things would have been possible for me if it wasn’t for all the work I’ve been able to do by coming here. I owe my life to God and the Recovery Project.”
Vulnerable
“I’ve got children that have suffered massively as a result of my using, as have my family and other people in my life. My using took me to jails, institutions and also death, as I’ve had several overdoses and was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital twice. I was an addict of the most hopeless kind who could not stop using for anything. “Since coming through the BHT Recovery Project I’ve managed to start rebuilding my life. After getting through a difficult detox in hospital and getting to the project absolutely battered and shut down, I’ve started Dan Poulter MP and Andy Winter
Dr Poulter visited BHT to learn more about its work and the work of the NHS in combatting the alcohol and drug problems in Brighton and Hove. Until recently the Brighton and Hove had the highest rate of drug-related deaths in the country. Dr Poulter listened to Dr Giles Allen, from the Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, as well as Blythe Crawford, manager of BHT’s Addiction Services, and Brian Sudway, manager of the Recovery Project. Dr Poulter said: “Community projects like Brighton Housing Trust’s addiction service not only help those struggling with addiction to recover – they also ease the pressure on the NHS by reducing demand on hospitals from a very vulnerable group of patients. I was pleased to see the excellent work here in Brighton, and to hear that long-term rates of recovery from drug and alcohol
addiction resulting from an abstinence-based approach to treating addiction remain high.” BHT chief executive Andy Winter said: “What clients value about our approach is the level of responsibility given to them in the running of the community and the trust we show in their ability to do this. That is the cornerstone for the success of the service. A focus of our Addiction Services is the role played by current and former residents in delivering the service. This includes ‘Recovery Buddies’, former residents who return to mentor new residents, enhancing the service provided by paid staff.” The aim of BHT Addiction Services is to help people who have been homeless and addicted to drink or drugs to give up their dependence and to sustain their abstinence. The service consists of three units: • Detox Support Project (6 residents) • Recovery Project (26 residents) • Move-On Accommodation (31 residents) Dr Poulter visited the Recovery Project which provides a programme of individual and group therapeutic support for people who are abstinent. They are supported to make positive changes in their thinking and behaviour to prevent relapse and to make progress towards more selfresponsibility and independent living. The programme lasts for between six and nine months at which point residents graduate to move-on accommodation or other independent living options. Those in move-on accommodation are required to take part in education, training or work-related activities. BHT’s team, including those with first-hand experience of addiction, don’t just dwell on the past but focus on ways to sustain a productive and drug-free future. ■

GEORGE CLOONEY FILMS IN SUSSEX
Movie star George Clooney and his Hollywood co-stars Matt Damon, John Goodman, Bill Murray and Downton Abbey star Hugh Bonneville caused a stir in Sussex recently when they arrived for filming in picturesque Rye. Crowds turned up to catch a glimpse of them filming their new movie on the beaches of Sussex. George was ever the gentleman and delighted his fans by chatting and signing autographs. The new movie – The Monuments Men – is co-written, produced and directed by George himself. It follows the story of the Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives programme, a group tasked with saving pieces of art before their destruction by Hitler during World War II. The film is due for release in December this year and we can’t wait to check it out to spot parts of our lovely county!

source close to Hollywood A list ‘k’ouple Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher has suggested they might be looking for wedding venues, and have their sights set on none other than sunny Brighton! Despite not going public with their romance as of yet, which blossomed following Kutcher’s high-profile split from wife Demi Moore, the couple have done little to dispel rumours that they are head-over-heels in love. And according to American website UPI, a little bird is now suggesting the two might be looking to get married – as soon as Kutcher’s divorce is finalised, that is! “They are desperate to get married as soon as possible because they want to start a family and are slightly old-fashioned about these things,” explained the source. First on the cards was Stonehenge, but apparently their heads have recently been turned by Brighton’s beautiful Royal Pavilion, suggested the friend of the duo, saying they have simply "fallen in love with the UK”. We think the Pavilion would be just the place for a celeb wedding – expect us hiding in the bushes if we even hear a whiff of it!
FREEMASONS SET FOR PRIDE
This year’s Brighton Pride event is set to be the hottest ticket of the summer and we can announce that legendary Brighton duo the Freemasons have joined the line-up and will be rocking Preston Park in 2013. Paloma Faith will also be playing a DJ set at the 3 August event; to get your tickets to see the hottest DJ sets of the summer visit www.brighton-pride.org
My absolute favourite TV star Miranda was spotted in Brighton last week, dining at celeb fave Donatello. The comedienne, who has recently laughed off rumours that she is set to become the latest Dr Who, tucked in to a tagliatelle al funghi at the Italian eatery in The Lanes. The restaurant is now considering renaming the dish ‘the Miranda’ in homage to everyone’s favourite clutz – we approve!

wards season is now almost a year round state. Here in Brighton and Hove and across Sussex we love them, our own little Oscars, for music, business, food and festivals, from Brighton Festival and Fringe to the Oska Brights, my particular favourites. I love them, particularly when I am involved either in the organisation or, even better, when, along with my colleagues at the Brighton and Hove Food and Drink Festival, we have been nominated. Here at Latest, we have just had our annual Latest Festival Awards. The evening started with the lovely Lynn Ruth Miller doing her show, Granny’s Gone Wild, which went down a storm with the anxious audience of nominees. After that I took to the stage, once again with Lynn Ruth, to present the awards. We started with Paul Levy from The Fringe Review. He gave away one of his rare awards, a blue teapot and a certificate. Then came our award for Best Artists Open House, a much deserved one too, going to The Ceramic House. After that it was full steam ahead with the rest and it all went rather well until I managed to suggest that if Lynn Ruth and Andrew Comben were to have a love child it would probably look like our top award winner this year – Michael Rosen. It was meant in jest and I have to hope that no one really took offence.
“I downed another glass of fizz and gritted my face into a ‘well done’ smile that barely covered the disappointment” Later the same week I attended The Brighton and Hove Business Awards – such a fun event. Organised by the inimitable Caraline Brown of award-winning PR outfit Midnight Communications, they forged a new and rather jolly format. Moving away from the corporate black tie and dinner ideas of old, Caraline served them up on Brighton Pier
with prosecco and lakes of wine, fish ‘n’ chips, sausages, candy-floss and popcorn. The marvellous Laura Nixon and Jim Deveraux hosted as Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley, and everyone got into the mood. I had already been to a sparkling wine tasting at Pub du Vin so I was in a jolly mood from the very start and soon settled in with a cone of chips and some battered fish. The comperes did a few numbers and we were off. Nominated in two categories we were praying we would win at least one, so when the first went to a competitor the tension in the team rose. I downed another glass of fizz and gritted my face into a ‘well done’ smile that barely covered the disappointment. But that was not for long as we won the second one. Gathering the team together we made for the stage and, as ever, our MD Mr Mosley stayed at the back (he’s a modest chap), and I was left to say thank you. I didn’t cry or thank my family. I did remind the gathered crowd that we are a CIC, not for profit and largely dependent on goodwill and our generous sponsors. Without them it simply would not happen and we could not stage so many free access events and have gained our reputation for being a sustainable business. For those who are confused, we are not the Foodies, the festival that takes place in spring on Hove Lawns and charges £10 entrance fee. We are the free one, the one that takes over New Road at Easter and Hove Lawns and New Road in September. We have now announced our autumn programme packed with favourites like The Live Food show which I present and Latest 7 sponsors me doing that. Favourites like Make Your Case and Bitter And Twisted return, and this year the finals of our own food awards, 12 new awards that have been nominated by the public and right now are being secretly shopped by are 12 teams of judges. GREAT BEAUTY H
BEAUTIFUL THING, Theatre Royal Brighton, 10 June 2013 ✪✪✪✪✪ ow amazing and how scary it is that a play, so poignant 25 years ago, still carries such an important and valid a message. Young gay people still have to face the same demons as they did then. Jonathan Harvey’s skill as a writer is superb, funny and pointed, his characters finely drawn, his story cleverly wrought. And the cast more than do justice to this. Suranne Jones is excellent as the mother, brittle but with a soft centre. Zaraah Abrahams is great as the disenfranchised Leah and Oilver Farnsworth plays Tony with great charm. But it is Jake Davies and DannyBoy Hatchard, the two boys, who steal the show. Hatchard beautifully captures the fragility of sporty Ste, the boy abused by his brother and father, he captures the gangliness of youth and of innocence awakened. Davies is quite brilliant as Jamie, he has boyish charm, naivety and the ability to portray the physicality of a man child. At the same time he has the emotional depth to convey the sexuality and emotional charge required to express that this is not just a phase, a physical itch that must be scratched, but a true and natural emotion that cannot be ignored or denied. It brought back so many feelings that, whilst I laughed out loud at the humour, I also shed tears. Andrew Kay
REGINALD D HUNTER – IN THE MIDST OF CRACKERS
Hunter’s stand-up routine is like a fine wine – it just keeps improving with age. While always being a far from conventional comedian, his new show moves things up to another level; the American mixes confessions of intensely personal experiences with tales of his recent high profile public controversies to craft a refreshingly honest form of comedy. The laughs came thick and fast, but Hunter now also exudes a startling sense of maturity that he always seemed to strive for in the past, but never quite succeeded in conveying. Inspirational, thoughtprovoking and irrepressibly funny. Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, 8 June 2013 ✪✪✪✪✪ Adam Lindsay
JOHN FOXX & THE MATH
The ever-forward-looking electronic music pioneer returned with his ongoing project alongside collaborators Benge Edwards and Hannah Peel. Continuing the futurism themes of his earlier work, much of the set, mainly pulled from 2011’s Interplay and 1980’s Metamatic, could have been the soundtrack to a postapocalypse Cronenberg film. The Running Man saw Foxx roaring over Benge’s pounding synth drums and the floor-shakingly deep bass, while Peel’s violin harked back to Ultravox!’s haunting bleakness: the throbbing ‘Catwalk’ even giving a nod to their classic ‘Rockwrok’. resh from the critically acclaimed West End production One Man, Two Guvnors, Rufus Hound has been confirmed in the cast of Neville’s Island at Chichester’s Theatre in the Park this summer. He will play Roy, one of four businessman sent off on a team building exercise in Tim Firth’s comedy about a disastrous outward bound expedition. They succeed in becoming the first people ever to get shipwrecked on an island in the Lake District. What should have been a bonding process turns into a muddy, bloody fight for survival amid a carnival of recrimination, French cricket and sausages. Hound’s current role as Francis Henshall in the West End run of One Man, Two Guvnors follows his performance in the UK tour of the National Theatre’s award-winning production. Other acting credits include Utopia (Soho Theatre) and a leading role in the film The Wedding Video, written by Tim Firth. He recently presented BBC Radio 4’s My Teenage Years, a series in which celebrities talk about the diaries that they kept during adolescence. The programme was a Silver Winner in the Best Comedy category at the 2013 Sony Radio Awards. Hound has appeared as a regular panellist on numerous popular television quiz and comedy shows including Celebrity Juice, Argumental, and Would I Lie to You?. He took part in Let’s Dance For Sport Relief, winning the 2010 series for his memorable performance as Cheryl Cole, dancing to ‘Fight For This Love’.

WHAT’S ON COMEDY&FILM, ART&EVENTS
COMEDY: BRIGHTON LOCAL COMEDY For a city teaming with aspiring comedians, jobbing comedians & comedians you’ll see on the telly, it’s worth staying in touch with your grass roots
T
Ingrid Dahle his Christmas will see the release of Brighton boy Seann Walsh’s first stand-up DVD, in time to fill stockings and local pride alike. After a bounty of appearances on Never Mind The Buzzcocks, Mock The Week, Argumental and Michael McIntyre’s Roadshow it seems right. It is also only six and a half years since Seann played his first gig ever, here in Brighton, at the still going strong new act night Rabbit In The Headlights (Upstairs At Three And Ten, last Friday of the month, 8pm, £6.50/5.50). The new act night, frequently including a more established act headlining the bill, holds a treasure chest of booty in terms of newly developing talent, and Brighton is a city that truly nurtures and Flange Krammer develops it. Usually with at least seven or eight acts on the bill, sets are kept short – between five and ten minutes each – and topics and styles vary enormously. They’re scattered all over the city, from Comedy Cooler at the Alibi in Hove (first Friday of the month, £4/3) to A Bit Of Banter at the Thomas Kemp pub in Kemp Town (this Sunday, free), with Comedy Canoe in the middle at the Temple bar on Western Road (first Wednesday of the month, £4). Throw in Comedy Hamster (The Hampton pub, Tuesday 18 June, free), Giraffe comedy (first Tuesday of the month, Caroline Of Brunswick, £3) and Hecklers Delight (last Wednesday of the month, Koba, free) for Sam Savage good measure and there are loads to catch the next big thing at. And as they grow so do their headliners. The next Funnyhaha (second Wednesday of the month, Caroline Of Brunswick, £5) has the marvellous Zoe Lyons headlining, as seen on TV, clubs nationwide and monthly hosting Komedia’s Bent Double. The next Laughtermarket (The Old Market, first Thursday of the month, £4) has Nick Helm headlining. He who has just won commissions for two new TV series of his very own and has been making his own splash on the small screen of late. It’s the acts that cut their teeth at these clubs that come back again as they grow in profile to the places that supported and encouraged them. At the same time Seann Walsh was getting his first gig, a certain Ms Sarah Millican was headlining the now defunct Sidesplitters at the now defunct Providence pub on Western Road. She knocked our socks off then. Don’t miss the batch that are separating feet from wooly attire right now. Find all local comedy club listings at http://thelatest.co.uk/listings/

MUSIC: THE BLUE AEROPLANES Seminal new wave outfit from Bristol are on their first tour in seven years. Jeff Hemmings finds out more
P
erhaps Bristol’s greatest ever guitar band and now the proud owners of the legendary venue, The Fleece, The Blue Aeroplanes formed in the early 1980s from the ashes of notable Bristol post-punk poetic pranksters Art Objects, and have been ignoring the dictates of fashion ever since with their unique blend of rock, pop, folk, poetry, dance, art and mayhem. Gerard Langley, brother John Langley, and dancer Wojtek Dmochowski (who was years ahead of Bez in becoming a ‘dance’ only member of a rock band) have been the mainstays of the archetypal indie band. They also, in their early incarnation, featured turntablist John Stapleton, again an unheard of feature of a band at the time. First album Bop Art appeared on their own label in 1984 (the same year as first releases by Yo La Tengo, Flaming Lips and Red Hot Chili Peppers!) and was rapidly picked up by the Fire label in the UK. Tolerance and Spitting Out Miracles followed and the band acquired a huge UK and Europe following leading to their 1990 signing to Ensign Records (Chrysalis in the US). Tours with REM and the Church and the release of UK chart albums Swagger and Beatsongs followed, before the sale of Chrysalis to EMI in 1991 forced the cancellation of the first Aeroplanes headline tour of America just as their trans-Atlantic pop cross-over single ‘Yr Own World’ was receiving rotation airplay across the country. Out of step with both Brit-pop and grunge, the band signed to Beggars Banquet and released Life Model and Rough Music in 1994 and 1995 respectively. At this point, things became slightly murky as a succession of incidents including death, madness, divorce and family problems (The Aeroplanes’ membership has involved more than a dozen siblings) resulted in frontman and singer Gerard Langley retreating back to Bristol to write his definitive (though still unfinished) ‘History Of Rock Music’. A solo album, Record Player, followed in 1999 before the band reconvened to record a 12-part poem Gerard had written about the effects of the English Civil War on contemporary life. The resulting Cavaliers album was successful enough for the band to sign to EMI to release the criticallyacclaimed Swagger Deluxe and Altitude albums (2006). Frontman Gerard Langley has a huge stage presence, always wearing his trademark shades even in dark venues, and will move from casually introducing songs and making cryptic comments to answering questions from the audience, back to his half-sung, half spoken snarling delivery of his lyrics. This gig marks the 20th anniversary of their Beatsongs album. They will be joined by fellow Bristolian and former lead singer of Strangelove, Patrick Duff. Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar, Thursday 20 June, 7.30pm, £11.25/£10

I
f you’ve had half an eye or an ear or a nose on the comings and goings of the popular hit parade over the last six months, you’ll recognise those lyrics as being the work of one Mr Tom Peter Odell. The piano-bruising songwriter surfaced somewhere around the end of 2012, and from the moment his Songs From Another Love EP dropped he’s been that guy walking around with a big neon sign flashing ‘THIS GUY’ above his head. Signed to Lily Rose Cooper’s Columbia imprint In The Name Of, it was immediately clear that his songs of heartbreak and half-requited love had that special ingredient of being masses-friendly and not completely awful. Our suspicions about his chart-bothering potential were confirmed when he won the Critics’ Choice Award at the Brits (previous winners: Florence, Adele, Jessie, Emeli and Ellie – single names all that’s necessary). It’s the music industry equivalent of a gold star. What does this have to do with anything? That’s what you’re saying, we know. Well, first of all, young Tom’s first album, Long Way Down, is out on Monday. Secondly, and much more importantly, he was a student at BIMM, graduating in 2010. He also spent a long time on Brighton’s open mic circuit, describing it in an interview with the (gulp) Daily Mail as “full of humiliation”. We’re bringing this up as a little heads up for all the guitar fiends and bedroom twiddlers out there, because we know for a lot of people on that circuit it seems like you’re bouncing on a trampoline under a glass ceiling, one that doesn’t ever seem like cracking. Let Tom be a lesson to you: it’s not that far away. Come see what we've been up to in and around Brighton: www.facebook.com/BmusicTV
his week I'm going to share some more of what me and my pals get up to on a night out! Recently it was Nikita’s birthday. We started the weekend off in HedKandi on Friday. It was a special event because the Afrobeats artist Mr Silva performed. There was just one slightly awkward moment when the club went silent waiting for the DJ to get back on his set and Nikita decided to stand in the DJ booth, put her hands in the air and scream “f*** the free world!” (as seen on 8 Mile). Yes, the whole club did stop and stare right at us! Embarrassed! After five bottles of champers, I’m inclined to say we were all wasted! You know you've had too much to drink when you’re the last person in the club dancing in the middle of the dance floor and there’s no music playing! Oops! Once I was rescued by everyone outside we all decided it would be a good idea to go to the after party (what we call the dungeon). I’m pretty sure it was a brilliant after party but unfortunately I fell asleep upstairs! Oops again! The next day, Saturday, which was Nikita’s actual birthday, we made her go on a treasure hunt (as I mentioned a few weeks back, she likes to think she’s a pirate). The treasure hunt eventually led her back to the same after party where all her friends were waiting. We drank, we danced, we made fools out of ourselves yet again, and I’m pretty sure Natalie got half naked at one point thinking she was a size 8 (“piff ting” as she calls it!). Towards the end of the night Natalie decided to take on the roll of Rambo and kick someone out of the party who wasn't invited and stated it’s not a birthday without a fight! Don't worry though, Natalie made it home without any bruises. The night ended on a happy note but an awful hangover, but with Natalie's hair extensions still intact. (I must say, Bellaboos hair extensions are a brilliant look for a night out!) In next week’s issue I will share my tips and tricks about what to wear clubbing, make-up, hair and accessories!

Andy Hinton on this week’s best gigs
A
week of two things of note (in my musical universe). Obsessive listening to the new Laura Marling album; yeah yeah, everyone is banging on about how accomplished it is for someone so young but they are correct. Dylan was the same age when he wrote ‘Like A Rolling Stone’; big comparison indeed but this girl's special. Second thing is the announcement of what could be the two best gigs of the year. Okay, they are ages away but both send a tiny shiver of excitement up my spine: Deerhunter on 19 October and Kurt Vile and The Violators on 17 December. They’re worth mentioning as they are brilliant bands and they will both sell out. Anyway, enough blathering; this week’s eclectic musical mix? Wednesday sees an digital/analogue clash with influential German electronic producer Ulrich Schnauss bringing his “beautiful textural music with an epic blissed out quality” to the Green Door Store. Over at Komedia the funky as hell Londoner's Melt Yourself Down are doing their thang (it's definitely ‘thang’ in their case, just take a listen to one of their slightly unhinged singles). At The Green Door Store on Thursday is one of the founder members of Animal Collective’s latest project, Avey Tare’s Slasher Flicks. Avey has been one of the leading lights of the collective so, as Sarah Rayner says, expect “a The Babies dizzyingly diverse fusion, a fully immersive listening experience”. Ron Sexsmith “is the owner of a genuinely amazing voice, one as smooth as the path of the oil in a Castrol GTX advert” says Tim Smillie, and he's playing in the beautiful St George’s Church on Friday. A cult singer songwriter, feted by such luminaries as Ray Davies and Elvis Costello, this will be special. Unusually for a Saturday there’s loads going on so you don’t just have to sit in the pub or go to a West Street pick-up joint (as if you would). Cult (yep, definitely cult this lot) US band Deerhoof are at The Haunt. There’s a great local line-up at West Hill Hall with wonderful indie-popsters Milk and Biscuits, supported by more Noise favourites TRAAMS and Speak Galactic. And last but definitely not least (my tip of the week); cross the fuzzy The Vivian Girls with the lo-fi Woods (two great New York bands) and you get the mightily addictive fuzzy lo-fi noise-pop of The Babies at The Green Door Store. STARS With Val Aviv
★ARIES {Mar 21–Apr 20}
This week’s Full Moon unearths some of your psychological inheritance that has been passed down to you from the family. With both Jupiter and Lilith making a hard aspect to the Sun, uncovering your darker side can be a hidden blessing.
★TAURUS {Apr 21–May 21}
You can connect especially well to women as your sympathy for the feminine is heightened and emotions are felt deeply while your ruler is passing through Cancer. Don’t take it personally when around the Full Moon your ideas are challenged.
★GEMINI {May 22–June 21}
As Mars rages through your sign bringing with him some conflicts of interest, confrontation and competition. Your ego is well armed, just remember not to take it all so seriously. Work on sorting out those finances around the Full Moon, you may uncover something of value.
★CANCER {June 22–July 22}
The Full Moon is in your opposite sign of Capricorn, so a significant relationship quandary is brought to the surface for a facelift. Lilith is in your sign, especially affecting those of you born in the early part of cancer, revealing your darker nature.
★LEO {July 23–Aug 22}
Your ruler the Sun changes sign from the light-hearted chatty Gemini, into the highly sensitive and emotional Cancer. You will feel distinctly different as the week progresses and the Full Moon presses you to fulfill your obligations.
★VIRGO {Aug 23–Sep 22}
While your ruler takes a distinctly more passive approach to life in sensitive Cancer, Mars dominates your public image and you seem constantly challenged to assert yourself, which at times can be rather confronting. The Full Moon is energising love as instinctual romantic feelings are revealed.
★LIBRA {Sep 23–Oct 22}
Tensions could mount professionally. While you may wish there was more you could do, a niggling feeling tells you sensitivity is required. The Full Moon brings your attention home, strong roots are the key to your professional success.
★SCORPIO {Oct 23–Nov 21}
The Full Moon will encourage communications and a message or short journey of special significance is likely. Your intellectual understanding is growing and you can use this mental sophistication to expand your horizons,.
★SAGITTARIUS {Nov 22–Dec 20}
Things may take a decided turn shortly after this financial Full Moon where your luck will change, this is not a bad thing. Make the most of what’s left of this interesting time in relationships as what happens next will undoubtedly rock your boat.
★CAPRICORN {Dec 21–Jan 19}
The Full Moon this week is in your sign so relationship dynamics come to ahead and you’re able to see far more deeply into your own unconscious psyche. With so much in your opposite sign and house of partnership including Lilith, there may be a lot about your partner that you’ve yet to discover.
★AQUARIUS {Jan 20–Feb 19}
Watch your daily routine and notice what kind of council you are keeping with your internal dialogue. Ask yourself, if it’s true or if it’s helpful? You are highly sensitive this week, while you may not be able to make sense of everything, you do have some control over your thoughts.
★PISCES {Feb 20–Mar 20}
Romance can be ten times as sexy compared to usual. Your life is about to take a fortuitous turn for the better enabling you to have more fun and express your wilder side with less constraint. You may spend more time with children or fall pregnant.
