Into the fray in hospital A&E Adrian Twyning faced grenades in Iraq. Now he’s trying to sort out the problems facing the Royal Sussex A&E. Frank le Duc reports
A
former executive at the Royal Sussex County Hospital once described Adrian Twyning as the sort of person who ran towards trouble, not away from it. After all, Mr Twyning, 36, spent four years as an Army lawyer, serving in Iraq. And after a year running maternity services and the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton, he is turning his attention to the Accident and Emergency Department (A&E). As associate director of operations for medicine he is responsible for more than just the Emergency Department. But it’s A&E that’s been in the news. Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs the Royal Sussex, declared a crisis in January. The hospital asked for external support. And the official watchdog, the Care Quality Commission (CQC), has since carried out an inspection and flagged up concerns. Mr Twyning said: “When I joined the NHS I was really keen to do more frontline managerial work, replicating what I did with the Army. We have had good performance over the past couple of months but we have to have a model that is sustainable and resilient. We’ve put a project plan in place. reduce energy bills by 85% through installing LED lighting, timers and motion sensors. The building is now also powered by 100% renewable electricity, from wave, solar and wind sources. This builds on a package of measures we introduced last year, which saw the amount of water used in the Brighton Centre reduced by a massive 96%. We’ve also introduced comprehensive recycling facilities, including for usually one-use materials like stands and carpets. Conference organisers now receive more information about local suppliers for greener events then ever before. This includes where they can buy better exhibition materials,

Our programme complies with two world class International Standards for Environmental Management and Sustainable Events, and it was showcased last week at an open launch event at the Brighton Centre. It’s clear that event organisers are interested in this agenda, and 98% of those who attended the launch were inspired to include sustainability initiatives in their future plans. One Labour supporter said: “He has the potential and the credentials to become an excellent MP but it’s not as if he doesn’t have enough on his plate at the moment.” The married father of two had every confidence that he could keep work and politics separate and find time for both. He is a firm advocate of people with a good track record in public service putting themselves forward for a role in political life. As someone who has worked as a private sector lawyer, served in the Army and run a hospital, he has plenty to offer. Mr Twyning described working with judges in Basra in Iraq in 2007, trying to help re-establish the rule of law, speed up court cases and safeguard human rights. The lawyer’s world of words and the rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) of the ever-moving frontlines gave life there a dangerous edge. He said: “I’ll never forget being flown up to Baghdad and being shot at with RPGs.” He has now tasted four years of life in the NHS after serving for four years in the Army. He said of his time in Iraq: “I’m really proud of what we did there in really difficult circumstances.” Many will hope that Mr Twyning will be able to say the same thing after Brighton’s A&E has faced its next testing surge. ■

Brighton & Hove’s politicians shared personal stories of loss as they debated dementia & care for the dying. Frank le Duc reports
T
he way we care for elderly people came under the spotlight in the BBC TV programme Panorama last week. Most of those who work in rest homes and nursing homes handle their vulnerable residents with warmth and compassion. But the programme highlighted exceptions. It made for harrowing viewing. The subject has also been raised closer to home. Members of the Brighton and Hove City Council Adult Care and Health Committee discussed end of life and dementia care last week. They were keen that any new policy should ensure patients are able to have a “good death”. Some councillors touched on their personal experiences – and they weren’t characterised by best practice. They spoke about seeing people suffer. They spoke about not being kept informed as relatives neared the end. And they spoke of a feeling of not being prepared for the death of someone close and the shock and upset that followed. Some felt guilt for years afterwards about the way in which their relatives died. A key cause for concern was the “Liverpool Care Pathway”. It is a way of caring for someone deemed to be dying. Councillors Mo Marsh, Mary Mears, Dawn Barnett and Anne Meadows spoke out one by one. They mentioned few personal details but Councillor Marsh was talking about the end of her mother’s life and Councillor Mears was moved to speak by what happened in her father’s final days. Councillor Mears said that she had not realised that she was watching a loved one effectively being starved to death and deydrated. She said: “It’s a very personal thing. Someone could
he waterfront is definitely the place to be this summer. When the sun comes out and the kids have finished school, there is no better place than beside the seaside. Whether it’s being active and adventurous or simply chilling out, spending time in, on or by the water makes you feel a whole lot better. If Brighton is the south coast’s brightest and best resort, then Brighton Marina is one of the best places in the city for you to make the most of the sea… For starters, why not go fishing? You can fish from both breakwaters or hop on a fishing trip. Boats depart every two hours from 10am–6pm. These 90-minute mackerel trips are enormous fun for all the family, corporate entertaining or just a day out with friends, and start from only £20 per person. There are also some great panoramic pleasure boat trips available from the harbour. They last from 45 minutes upwards and are suitable for all ages. This is a great way to explore the city’s coastline, for less than £10, available with Ross Boat Trips. have had a conversation with me but they chose not to. It’s very easy just to turn the morphine up and up. “I’m not alone in this. It’s happened to a lot of people. There are some excellent doctors and nurses but I’m not confident that (best practice) will happen across the piece. When nobody has bothered to have that conversation with you, that will always stay with the family.” The Liverpool Care Pathway has been widely adopted in the NHS. It was designed for cancer patients in hospices. Most trusts are paid to hit targets linked to it. Senior medical figures have voiced concerns. One described it as a regime of sedation and dehydration. Another referred to

state-sponsored euthanasia. Professor Patrick Pullicino, a leading clinical neuroscientist, called it “an assisted death pathway rather than a care pathway”. Councillor Barnett, a retired carer, also spoke about the distress of sitting with someone who was effectively being dehydrated. She said: “I have held a stick with a sponge on the end and that person has sucked and sucked on it.” Councillor Geoffrey Bowden said: “Sometimes carers don’t always think families can take the truth and withhold information. They’re well meaning but as we’re hearing the consequences can be painful and long lasting. Families can feel great distress and can sometimes transmit this distress to the dying person. Doctors may need better training in how to have these difficult conversations. There is a need for honesty and openness.” Geraldine Hoban, chief executive of the Brighton and Hove Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), said: “It’s sad to hear about your upsetting experiences but that’s not how it should work.” She said that the aim of the new policy was to improve communication. And Dr Christa Beesley, the CCG clinical lead for dementia, said: “Anyone who is dealing with people dying needs a lot of training. We’re going to be more upfront. We’re going to talk about dying. We’re going to be much more open with people. It should be an open discussion. People should be talking about this.” It wasn’t hard to discern strong and deeply felt reservations among the elected members of the Adult Care and Health Committee. Urging his colleagues to adopt the “Sussex Integrated End of Life and Dementia Care Pathway”, Councillor Ken Norman said that the new approach would improve on current practice. With one exception, the committee voted in favour. ■

Manners maketh...
H
ow modern am I? I have just downloaded my monthly bus pass to my iPhone. I know, technology is my best friend. Or at least it would be if I could find the app on the screen in bright sunlight and, having done that, remember which side of my phone to point at the driver. It’s a year and a half since I started using the buses on a regular basis and I have to say that I no longer miss driving around the city and, in particular, trying to park and then pay the crazy parking fees. No, the bus suits me just fine, well most of the time. I have started noticing a rather horrible practice that some people seem to think is acceptable. Brighton and Hove Buses are busy, few services run empty and finding a seat is often difficult, especially if, like me, you don’t like to go to the upper deck. So when I see single passengers occupying the aisle seat and blocking access to the window seat it makes me rather cross. It’s such an arrogant thing to do, especially when the bus is full. It happened to me a few days ago. The bus was full to bursting and as I moved along towards the back I spotted a window seat empty. I politely asked the person occupying the outer space if they would let me sit. The person scowled at me and grumbled.
“Manners cost nothing and can help make life seem just that bit better, no, they can make life a whole lot better” I was pretty speechless, unlike the young man behind them, having seen what had happened, decided to launch into an attack on the offender. You may have noticed that as yet I have only referred to the seat-hogging offender as a ‘person’,
the truth is this was a smartly dressed lady of advancing years. I know, a real butter wouldn’t melt type. Who would believe it? It depresses me so much when I see this kind of behaviour. Rudeness, bad manners, call it what you like – it’s just not very nice behaviour, totally unacceptable. At 57 I still stand up and let people who I feel need the seat more than me sit down. The other day someone stood up and offered me their seat and I accepted as the gouty foot was giving me more than a bit of gip. Manners cost nothing and can help make life seem just that bit better, no, they can make life a whole lot better. Last night I saw a car parked across two disabled parking bays. Not even in the right direction but at a 90º angle to the marked spaces. I looked in the window and there was no disabled parking permit, just a smug looking man, again of advancing years. It was all I could do to restrain myself from rapping on the window and giving him a piece of my mind, and maybe I should have, but I was in a rush and tired and... well to be honest, I was not in the mood for a confrontation. I might have ended up swearing at him and thereby losing my dignity and my manners. I walked on, cross with him and with myself. A few yards down the street I saw an elderly man approaching. He was badly dressed and he looked like he needed a bath, but he was eating something so I thought things could not be too bad. That was until I drew alongside him. I looked to see what his dinner was and I was horrified. In his hand was an open pack of uncooked sausages. These he was, tearing them apart and stuffing them raw into his mouth. It was a chilling sight. What kind of a world are we living in? What happens to a man that he will end up eating raw sausages on the street, or a lady who feels she has the right to occupy two seats when people are standing on the bus, or a man who mops up parking spaces for those less able? And what do we do about it? Do we grit our teeth as I did or do we launch an attack as the man on the bus did on my behalf? I am at a loss as to what to say, really I am. If you have any ideas then please let me know.

I don’t like to complain but things have been very difficult lately. Food is so expensive these days that my pension doesn’t go very far at all, and I have been forced to sell several trinkets. In order to pay my last gas bill I had to take out a loan from one of those companies that advertise on the TV, and yesterday a man came round with a dog and shouted at me. It must be really famous, it's played that much, but when I try to hum it to anyone they just go blank. I think it's classical, written for orchestra by a great composer. It's very stormy and opens really loud with this four-note... well, motif, I suppose you’d call it, that pops up again and again in different guises. It sort of goes – da-da-da dah! Someone once said it sounds like fate knocking on the door, although I believe the composer himself prescribed no programme, this being what is known as 'absolute' music. I have a feeling that the composer was a fiery sort of chap, possibly with wild hair, a defiant scowl and piercing eyes; that he lived in Vienna in the first quarter of the 19th century; and that he poured out his tormented soul in a

Dear Jill, Since my husband was made redundant a year ago my family has been drifting closer and closer to starvation. The money I bring in working as a cleaner barely covers our rent, gas, water rates, etc. We visit a local food bank, but can only do so twice a month. My two children are looking thinner every day, and the youngest has developed some sort of skin condition from lack of vitamins. Can you suggest some way out of this nightmare? As trying to hum it to bewildered friends while thrashing about like a conductor is making me look a proper ’nana. Yours, Abigail Nolan, Patcham Dear Abigail, What an uncultured bunch your friends must be if they couldn’t help you with this one! Why, even from your letter, I could hear those unmistakable four notes in my head as clearly as if the orchestra were playing them before me. The piece you describe is possibly the most famous piece of classical music ever, written by the world’s most famous composer – ‘Papa’s Got a Brand New Pigbag’ by Pigbag. Keep those queries coming in! Mike. X

CONOR’S QUIFF
Brighton boy Conor Maynard has just returned to the UK after building his profile over the pond. Following the trip Conor took to Twitter to tell his fans, known endearingly as ‘Mayniacs’, that he desperately needed a new ‘do’. After minutes of anticipation, we were finally treated to a selfie (that’s a self-taken photograph to people who don’t call themselves ‘Mayniacs’ or ‘Beliebers’) and a comment explaining ‘The quiff has been tamed’. You can be assured that we will be keeping a close eye on all progress in this situation and updating when and where necessary.

MCCARTNEY’S MUSIC
After forging a career waiting tables in Brighton, Paul McCartney’s son James has finally taken to the stage with his own musical talents. His 20s saw The Beatles’ star’s son fight drink and drugs while trying to make ends meet in the city, but now, at 35 James is finally performing songs he’s been writing since he was 17 years old. Now reconciled with his father, James McCartney’s career seems to be on the up. Although it’s unlikely James will reach the popularity of the Fab Four we imagine it’s a whole lot better than living off tips from waiting tables.
BACK TO SCHOOL E
x-Burgess Hill School for Girls’ pupils Kelly Willoughby and her slightly more famous sister Holly, have turned their school days into a new novel for children. The TV presenter and her sibling have mixed their own history with a healthy dose of imagination to create the new book series, ‘School For Stars’, for Orion publishers. We were shocked to hear that the weighty new tome was almost completely constructed during one cab ride. Talking to the Mail recently, Holly explained: “By the time we got home in a cab – which took an hour and a half because there was so much traffic – we’d pretty much written the first book in terms of character and plot. You can’t physically write a book together, so Kelly does the writing and sends me bits by email and phones me up; we discuss what we want to happen next, then we meet up and develop it.” Without wishing to detract from Holly’s talent, we can’t help but feel Kelly – described by the ever tactful Daily Mail as ‘a curvaceous brunette in an ultra-feminine polka dot dress’ – somewhat took the brunt of the workload here. However, we’re sure even Kafka would have struggled to write a novel around Holly’s busy celeb lifestyle – which includes presenting for secondsat-a-time on each episode of BBC’s The Voice and having the second most requested hairstyle in Britain. Incorporating what they call their ‘twee’ upbringing in Brighton, the first co-written novel of the series School For Stars: First Term At L’Etoile, ultimately explores ‘one of the most important things in the world – friendship’. Perhaps not quite War And Peace, but we predict the book will be a hit with the tween generation. Willoughby’s talents are endless...
STARS SPREAD THE LOVE
After phenomenal successes in London and in Paris, Fishlove – the photographic project founded by Brighton Japanese restaurant Moshimo, continues its European journey next week as we launch the photographs in Rome. The one night ‘pop up’ event at the Jumeirah Grand Hotel Via Veneto takes place 2 July. The photographs of celebrities with fish in their naked arms have brought the impending catastrophe of over-fishing to the world media’s attention. Taken by renowned photographers such as Rankin and Alan Gelati, the Fishlove series has featured Greta Scacchi, Jerry Hall, Lizzy Jagger, and French actress Melanie Laurent. Now, a list of illustrious Italian celebrities have joined the campaign to save the marine environment from collapse. “The striking photographs are acting as a wake-up call to the world: end overfishing, or our seas will be without fish within a generation,” says Nicholas Röhl, co-owner of Moshimo restaurant in Brighton, who founded the project with actress Greta Scacchi in 2009 in response to the crisis of collapsing fish stocks in our seas. In one week alone, the Fishlove website, www.fishlove.co.uk, attracted 1.6 million hits. See next week's column for some great party pics! L7 INTERVIEW Brendan Cole and Natasha Kaplinsky dancing and asked me to sum it up in three words. So I said ‘yes darling: dull, dull, dull!’ – and it went from there.”
FAB-U-LOUS DAHLING Craig Revel Horwood talks to Andrew Kay about his career, his new show Strictly Confidential with Lisa Riley, & his role in the international hit that is Strictly Come Dancing How do you find time to do interviews – do you sleep? “Yes, but only about five or six hours a night. I don’t seem to need more.” You’re known for Strictly Come Dancing but you have had the most incredible career. The TV role paints a fun, bitchy and frivolous portrait of you but your career has been very serious... “Yes it is, people don’t realise I do anything but Strictly, but now they get to know I am a director and choreographer and that Strictly is a sort of Saturday job running up to Christmas. I like it in a way that I am sort of anonymous in the directing and choreography world and was faceless until the TV, which took over.” But the success of Strictly has allowed choreographers to become recognised... “I totally agree, and going to 45 countries worldwide and being in the Guinness Book of World Records is pretty frightening too. It’s hard to believe we are in our tenth year. It has certainly given choreographers a voice and brought dance to the foreground and inspired a host of other TV dance shows. There’s a place for dance in everybody’s lives. You can do it for fun but even our worst celebrities come away with something.” The celebrities are chosen, I guess, so some will be able to do it and some are there for pure entertainment value? “If it were a professional dance competition it would be vastly different – but it’s not. It’s the pros who have had their competition career and now teach the celebrities to dance.” So that has also created a career for the pros beyond competition? “That’s what great about it. For pros to teach they have to win titles. Strictly has given them a life beyond teaching and possibly a celebrity life. Anton du Beke went on to become a TV presenter, Ian Waite now presents. With the advent of Strictly Confidential, the new live stage show I have
Can you see yourself doing Strictly for years to come? “Yes, I enjoy it and it’s a fantastic Saturday job that lets me continue with my other career. This year I have Strictly Confidential, then I’m doing The Witches Of Eastwick at The Watermill Theatre where I did Sunset Boulevard. It’s a real challenge and I cant wait to get to rehearsals. Then directly after that I am doing a similar thing with Fiddler On The Roof starring Paul Michael Glaser who was Starsky in Starsky And Hutch, and oddly he played Perchick in the regional movie and is now playing the lead role Tevye. He is really looking forward to that because he is an actor with musical experience. Then Strictly starts again and we’re on the road to Christmas and I do panto, this year in Southend on Sea, reprising my role as the Wicked Queen. Then I will be devising the new Strictly Arena show. The great thing about Strictly Confidential is that it can go to places the big arena show cannot go. In this show you learn about Lisa Riley and Ian, and Artem and Natalie. It’s sort of autobiographical, things that happen to them and things you can’t say on the TV show. It appeals to all ages, with extra numbers and dance styles.” Do you ever get frustrated that people have taken a long time to take your work seriously ? “Yes, it took five years before people warmed to me, to know what I am really like when put on the spot and out of my comfort zone. I also did Celebrity MasterChef in 2007 and was runner up. That was good because people saw me panic, sweat and shake like a leaf – not the cool, calm and collected person they see on Strictly.
created, that could go on yearly for the pro dancer and for a celebrity. It’s a way for them to show off their dancing skills and other things as they will be talking about their lives and behind the scenes on the show.” How were you initially approached to do Strictly? “I was directing a show in the West End and the producers were looking for directors and choreographers to be judges. My initial interview was over the telephone and they said ‘before we have you in just give us your thoughts on how you would react in certain situations’. They devised some over the phone and I reacted. Then they asked me in for a screen test and, like anyone, I auditioned. I didn’t know exactly what for either as they only had a concept and not the entire show format or whether it would take off. I went into the BBC, they miked me up and pointed a camera in my face and asked me to watch a monitor with
“I said ‘Yes darling: dull, dull, dull!’ – and it went from there”
Which is the real Craig? [Laughs] “Well, I have done so much now people can make their own mind up. It’s been a fascinating ride for the last ten years. I think a few producers got nervous about asking me to do things because I might be difficult and opinionated, but in fact, I am the reverse.” You’re telling me you’re easy? “No, I’m not easy, I know where to compromise, particularly with producers and money, it’s all relative, particularly now with people being nervous about investing in things. I want to keep theatre going and people coming to the theatre. I can use Strictly to get people who would not necessarily go to the theatre into theatres. It’s a win win situation. The TV has also helped with my charity work. I love doing the arty farty stuff but equally the commercial stuff and one helps keep the other alive. I love panto because it introduces children to live theatre.” Strictly Confidential, The Brighton Centre Wednesday 3 July Box office 0844 847 1515 www.brightoncentre.co.uk

Breaking up with your bank
A

pparently you’re more likely to get divorced twice in your lifetime than you are to change your bank. Which means that Royal and I have some serious marital issues. He stands me up, lets me down, lies and breaks promises. I’ve thought about leaving for a long time. At first I was afraid, I was petrified. How would I survive without him? I called, I said I was unhappy, I even sent an ultimatum... “If you “I even sent an ultimatum: ‘If don’t call me back by the end of the day I’m you don’t call me back by the leaving.” I sat by the phone all afternoon end of the day I’m leaving’” waiting for him to call. The call never came. From out of my window I could see that big black stallion Lloyd. He’s right there, he’s open on Saturdays, and I always did love horses. That sign... it had to be a sign. With tears in my eyes I took one last look at the final letter Royal ever sent me telling me I couldn’t change my address by post, phone or online so all my mail would continue to go to my old address. Then, I left a note on his dresser, and my old wedding ring, with these few goodbye words: Dear Royal, Once upon a time you dressed so fine, threw the bums a dime in your prime, didn’t you? And I know things have been tough lately, I know business is bad and you’re stressed and tired, well you’re not the only one. It’s been a long, long time coming, but I know that a change is gonna come. The thing is, I’m your boss, not the other way round. Your systems seem so complex that even your staff can’t access them. And when I come in, only to be met by a youth whose sub-text screams, “I’d be smoking weed and watching porn if it wasn’t for you”, well it makes me think that we are all just prisoners here, of our own device. You see... All I’m asking is for a little respect. I don’t want you to buy me off with gifts when I make a complaint, I want you to call me, talk to me like a human being and fix the problem. That’s all. Did I ask too much? More than a lot? You gave me nothing now it’s all that I’ve got. I really have looked for the reasons we were together in the first place... I found it hard, it’s hard to find, oh well, whatever, nevermind. I’ll find someone like you. You’re not even trying that hard not to show it, and baby, believe me I know it... you’ve lost that loving feeling. It’s okay, you don’t have to worry about me. I’m stronger than yesterday, now it’s nothing but my way, I thought that I’d be broke without you but I’m richer. You were my guy when stocks were high but just look what happens when they start to descend. A girl needs someone she can trust handling her best friends. I guess what I’m trying to say is, it’s not me, it’s you.

was at a house party in Hove, where one of the most interesting guests was a smart city girl. Banu Bal, a petite Turkish lady from Ankara with eyes as dark as coal and opinions as sharp as needles. She was a woman with attitude, and she knew where she was heading. At the age of 11 she started making ceramics and decided to follow the artistic footsteps of her father who was a clothing designer. We quickly became flatmates and friends, supporting one another’s creative dreams. When I moved out I told Banu to let me know when she got her pottery studio so I could write about her journey. One year later Banu joined the Borderline Studio and we sat there drinking coffee and eating biscuits. “You told me not to eat too many biscuits and to go the gym,” says Banu. “Did I really say that? Surely not. I have never been a health freak!” I reply and we both start laughing. Then I show her how to do squats, just like we used to do back at the flat. Now we do it to warm up before the interview. Banu came to the UK six years ago to study English. She then completed her Masters Degree in politics and art. She went on to work at the university teaching printing techniques for ceramics and glass. She describes her arrival in Brighton four years ago: “When I came to live here for the first time I saw the sculpture opposite the burnt West Pier. The sculpture made me feel welcome and I took an interest in the black metal of the West Pier. I like doing my research and before sculpting the West Pier as a project of architectural shape and space, I found out the name pier comes from the surname of the French architect who designed the first pier in France.“

Banu loves being a “Banu chose ceramics over foreign artist and understanding two painting after having seen a cultures. In Turkey people prefer handmade ceramic pool” contemporary ceramics whereas in the UK people want to use the items and many ceramic items have Japanese influences such as blue tones. Banu chose ceramics over painting after having seen a handmade ceramic pool. She loves the whole process as it is full of surprises: “You never know exactly which colour or shape is coming out of the oven. Doing ceramics is what I love. Playing with clay is very relaxing." www.banubal.co.uk Do you know any people who have really inspired you in Brighton? We’re not looking for celebrities. Not ordinary, but extraordinary. To finish there were two rather pretty strawberry tarts, crisp choux pastry filled with cream cheese and piled high with strawberries dressed with balsamic vinegar. They were sweet but not too sweet, and sharp, but not too sharp. Both Mr R and I have decent appetites but confess that we were beaten and I brought home the left overs in the pretty blue chill bag that comes as part of the £45 deal. Now that works out at £22.50 each for a four-course supper with enough left over for lunch the next day. In fact, if you bought a few extras the package would handsomely feed three, if not four. On the train home I also remembered there had been a bar of chocolate in there too, but we were too full of Mr Mozart’s fine music and Mr Carluccio’s fine food. Carluccio’s picnic come in three categories, classic and vegetarian at £45 and bambini for one at £10. Picnics should be booked no less than 24 hours in advance from Carluccio’s. Great outdoors T
hree into my Glyndebourne season and finally weather decent enough for a picnic. I grew up with year round picnics but these days I am less hardy and require at least enough sunshine to take the chill out of our long wintered earth. ‘The Marriage Of Figaro’ was a stunning opera to frame a good Mediterranean picnic and where better to get one than one of my favourite restaurant chains, Carluccio’s? It’s not the first time I have used their services for a picnic, and I have never been disappointed. In truth I have always been more than impressed. This year’s model is a revised version of last year’s menu, a few tweaks here and there that make it interesting. We started off by tucking into a fine box of antipasti misti, chilli stuffed olives that packed a kick, caper berries, excellent artichoke hearts, balsamic onions and soft cheese. With a glass of prosecco it certainly set us up for a walk around the ponds and then in for the first half. By the interval we were rather peckish so as the audience drifted off to one of the three excellent restaurants we headed for my favorite corner, a stone bench and a series of dishes that once again proved to be a delight. To start, the very lightest of goat’s cheese tarts, crisp pastry and sharp fluffy cheese, very delicious and rather generous in size too. On the side two rich hunks of red wine and radicchio focaccia were more than satisfying, in fact we ate only one and not all of that. A salad of pearl barley with broccoli and toasted hazelnuts scattered with rocket was both creamy and refeshing, and again very generous. The salad Panzanella with cherry tomatoes, olives, celery, roasted peppers and basil was lovely, a vibrant mix that was well dressed and rather moreish, the bag of sourdough croutons went unopened sadly, a carb too far at that point, especially as there was still another rather generous main dish. Chicken breast roasted with a herb crust was succulent and deliciously tasty, and again very generous. The parsley and tarragon crust was a delight, not too strident but not without character. It came on a bed of baby lettuce leaves and a salad of waxy potatoes with red onion and spicy salami that was again generously present and rather effective.

WE’RE DOING...
Kettlebells personal training. Lucy Howlett from LIFT Personal Training Ltd is a relatively new face to Brighton but she’s already putting many of us through our paces. I met Lucy on Hove Lawns for a one-to-one Kettlebells training session. One-to-one training means a focus on posture and correct form. Whatever your goal: increased fitness, toning or losing weight, personal training is the best place to start. Working with the Kettlebell weights, Lucy had me complete a range of exercises including squats and lunges, all the while utilising the weights to work the
arm muscles. No stranger to cardio exercise with a strong leg workout, the weights were the new addition for me, and I quickly found it exhausting but exhilarating. Bye bye bingo wings! Creating a figure of eight around the head with the Kettlebell weight was great for the arms, while another fun workout involved passing the weight around the body, moving the waist hulahoop style – great for toning! It wasn’t all fun and games though. Weight training was interspersed with short runs, the plank and my pet hate: push-ups. But with Lucy there to push me harder, I have never found a workout more beneficial. No pain, no gain, right? The best bit? You burn fat for up to 48 hours after the workout. The next day my arms and legs ached, as I’d fired up muscles that had been asleep for a long time! Now the goal is to keep going, as it will be great to see how far I can push myself. Lucy specialises in Pre- and Post-Natal Exercise, but also teaches Dance Tuition, Boxing Fitness (which I can’t wait to try), and offers Nutrition Advice. She has also teamed up with Christian Vila – fellow Kettlebells pro – to teach some of the bootcamp classes. I may not be ready for that just yet, but thanks to Lucy I’m heading towards my next goal. Dear Jacquie Your queries about natural health answered by Jacquie Lane for The College of Naturopathic Medicine Q. My eyelid twitches a lot. The optician can’t find anything wrong, but it’s very annoying. Is there anything I can do to help it naturally? SW, Brighton A. Eyelid twitches and spasms always feel more intense then they look to others. They can last a few moments or a few months. To find a solution for twitching eyes, you need to determine the underlying cause of this annoying problem. Doctors call this condition myokymia. The muscle contractions in an eyelid can be triggered by: stress, tiredness, eyestrain, nutritional imbalances, allergies, dry eyes, caffeine and alcohol. Because your optician has ruled out any other condition causing this, such as dry eyes or an incorrect lens prescription, we have to assume that you fall into one of the categories above.
What to do? Ensure you’re getting enough sleep and that it’s of good quality. Check your pillows and the ventilation of the room to promote comfort. Try and deal with any stressful issues and take time to relax. Baths with Epsom salts may deliver enough magnesium through the pores to assist here. Take a break from working at computers and try an eye spray to help dry eyes. Address your diet: remove caffeine, switch to herbal teas and dandelion or barley coffee, and
wave 19 stop alcohol and the usual nasties, such as sugar and processed foods. Add fresh vegetables, salads and fruits to every meal in order to get as much natural magnesium as you can. This very helpful mineral is nature’s tranquilliser and helps to relax muscles and nerves in the body. Foods that especially have a lot of magnesium are almonds and cashews, spinach, soy beans and green leafy vegetables. Magnesium can be used up in the body by stress and exercise/activity so you may need to take a good quality additivefree supplement for a few weeks in order to get enough in the system to help improve your condition by relaxing your muscles and nervous system. As always, see a nutritional therapist who can help you devise a specific food plan to increase your intake of essential nutrients and correct any deficiencies. See your health professional for advice.

wave LONG-HAUL FLIGHTS
Wherever you’re jetting off to this summer, fly safe and in optimum health. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) can develop after a long-haul flight. It occurs when the blood flows too slowly through the veins, causing a blood clot to form, usually in the legs. Reduce your risk of developing DVT while flying by wearing flight socks. These apply gentle pressure to the ankle to help blood flow. Sitting in the same – usually cramped – conditions also doesn’t help. Walk around whenever you can to keep blood flowing. If you are sat down watching the in-flight entertainment, there are some exercises you can do to reduce the risk of DVT developing: • Raise your heels 10 times, keeping your toes on the floor, then bring them down. • Raise and lower your toes 10 times. • Repeat every 30 minutes • Avoid drinking alcohol on the flight but do drink plenty of water.
Summer sun! Zara Baker finds your summer holiday essentials for health & wellbeing
I
f Cliff Richard had you singing along to ‘Summer Holiday’ in Hove last week, then you’re probably sat at work thinking about that little ray of sunshine in the near future: your all important summer holiday. Whether it’s in the UK or abroad, a long weekend or a fortnight, a holiday is the perfect break from your normal routine. So, with a warm holiday destination in mind, we have put together your essential travel checklist. Happy travels!
ON THE PLANE
With approximately 500,000 people boarding an aeroplane every day, flying to our destination is by far often the easiest (or only!) choice. Your trip begins at the airport, where strict security regulations on hand baggage allowances are in
place. Airports and different airlines may vary but the main gist is this: do not carry liquids over 100ml in your hand luggage. These will be confiscated – whether it’s drinking water, deodorant, contact lens solution or your favourite designer perfume. Don’t part with your summer essentials! Pack everything over 100ml in your suitcase – in multiple bags to prevent leakage and ruining your summer holiday wardrobe! Liquids under 100ml must be placed in a clear plastic bag to go through security – so think travel size shampoos, conditioners, toothpaste, moisturisers etc. Sharp objects are also restricted from hand luggage so pack your scissors, tweezers and razor blades in your suitcase otherwise you will have to buy them again when you reach your destination – or in the expensive airport shops! Hand luggage must not exceed 56cm x 45cm x 25cm in size. Travel in style: Express Sunshine Flower Turquoise/Pink Cabin Case £49 & Holdall £20, exclusive to www.debenhams.com
Keep germs at bay with The Body Shop’s fantastic range of cleansing hand gels. We love the freshness of the satsuma gel. No need for water or towels! £2.50, www.thebodyshop.co.uk
TRAVEL IN CONFIDENCE
Of course, with every great adventure there is risk. Once it’s all over, you’ll be glad you took the plunge, but prepare as much as you possibly can (flight socks/travel sickness pills/travel insurance etc). Not many people can put their hand up and say they love to fly, but, for some, a deep-rooted fear of flying can mean they never board a plane. The end result of a holiday destination and fantastic sights and adventures is enough for most of us to sit in cramped conditions for 10 hours or more. But a real phobia of flying can stop you seeing the big wide world. Remember that, when compared to travelling on the roads,
flying by aeroplane is actually incredibly safe. A fear of heights as well as feeling out of control are often the reasons people fear flying. “The person can experience physical sensations such as feeling sick, shortness of breath, or an increase in heart rate at the mere thought of flying,” says hynotherapist Jonathan Conway from The Conway Practice. There are ways a person can overcome the fear. Jonathan Conway teaches the ‘NLP Fast Phobia Cure’ which enables you to let go of the way the information is stored in the body and change the way you respond in the situation. Visualisation techniques can help you feel calm and in control, as you picture having a positive flying experience. Jonathan can also teach self hypnosis tricks for you to take with you on your journey. Don’t miss out on the holiday of a lifetime because of a negative voice in your head. AstaSUN After Sun Cream, 10.45 from www.powerhealth.co.uk As soon as this was applied to shoulders that had seen a bit too much sun, the sting and burn instantly disappeared. The redness started fading too. The skin didn’t peel and once the tan came out, it lasted longer than usual. A summer essential!
Forget ‘travelling light’, there are some essentials you just shouldn’t leave home without. Buying essentials like sun tan lotion at your destination can be more than double the price. Check the back of your lotions and potions for the ‘pot’ symbol with its lid askew – the shelf life of your product will be written here. Most sun tan lotions are only good for 12 months. Time to hit the shops? While you’re there, don’t forget these other holiday essentials...
Elemis Tan Accelerator, £21, www.elemis.com Ok, it’s another thing to think about before you go away but it’s worth it: this light-weight lotion smells like summer. Use in the weeks leading up to your holiday and avoid being red faced a few days in. It works by boosting the skin’s natural melanin production before sun exposure meaning, increasing your tan’s power. Highly reccommended for pale skin!
Mark Hill Little Hotties! Quick Fix Mini Dry Shampoo, £1.99, from Boots, www.boots.com This travel size dry shampoo refreshes the hair and is great for a quick change of style/added texture. It smells fresh and also sprays on clear rather than white – bonus!

Aromatherapy Associates Rose Hydrating Face Mask, £36, from Space NK, www.aromatherapyassociates.com This has a pleasant fragrance and was easy to apply, but the end result was a little disappointing as skin was not as hydrated as desired! Then again, being prone to dry skin, regular use may be required to reap the benefits. The transparent mask is perfect to apply on board a long-haul flight. Tip: keep in the fridge for some serious post-sun soothing!
2True Pro – Prime Perfect, £5, from Superdrug, www.superdrug.com From the new ‘Pro’ range, we were pleasantly surprised with the results. With its silky texture it was easy to apply and once foundation was applied over it, skin was flawless all day.
Emporio Armani – Diamonds Rose, from The perfume Shop, £24.50/£34.50, www.theperfumneshop.com No summer holiday is complete without a new fragrance to evoke memories long after you’ve returned home. Released this week, we love ‘Armani Diamonds Rose’ – a seductive, feminine fragrance with summery fruity scents and subtle floral tones. Patchouli keeps it sweet, and it’s long-lasting too.

he audience that gathered to see and hear the Peter Pan of Pop was, to say the least, silver-haired. At 57 I was in the youngest sector of the crowd as we sat through an underwhelming set from the Military Wives Choir who, if they were not, did a very poor job of disguising that they were not miming to a backing track. But we were not there for them, it was Sir Cliff we wanted and we were not to be disappointed. Backed by a superb band the 72 year old took to the stage with the vigour of the boy who first took the pop world by storm in 1958 with his hit ‘Move It’. He delivered an immaculate set of his hits, and there are so many from each era of his career, that delighted the crowd. Balancing ballads like ‘Miss You Nights’ and ‘The Twelfth Of Never’ with rockers like ‘Devil Woman’ and ‘Wired For Sound’ and a fine smattering of rock and roll classics from his forthcoming album, he gave pretty much all that we hoped to hear and what is most remarkable is that he did it well. The voice is as strong as ever, the range as full and the tone remains the same. Keeping fit has obviously paid off for Sir Cliff – and for his fans. His dance moves are still there too, but at one point I worried that if he didn’t spin equally clockwise and anti-clockwise he would screw himself into the stage. It was a freezing evening outdoors at the cricket ground but the audience was determined not to miss a beat and at the end the grey-haired fans mobbed the stage, in an orderly fashion, to pay homage to the legend that is Cliff, the eternal bachelor boy. BEING TOMMY COOPER
Playwright Tom Green took a moment in Vegas to tell his story of the legendary British comic/magician Tommy Cooper, framing Cooper as a comic master, then flipping the shiny coin to show his tarnished underside. An adulterous wife-hitting alcoholic, Tommy Cooper was not without his faults, and neither was this somewhat clunky production with some mediocre performances. But just like Tommy, the show orbits his comedy and that is what shines through and lifts the total with Damian Williams’ title role providing real magic with enjoyably excellent timing, delivery and pathos. THE CRAIG CHARLES FUNK & SOUL CLUB
Ably supported by the excellent The Impellers funk band, and Brighton’s very own DJ Format, Charles got the crowd moving with a wall of sound that makes his Radio 6 show still one on the best on air. Playing everything from classic choons to more contemporary dance numbers, the Scouse soulster ensured the feet kept shuffling, causing this “tired and emotional” reviewer to throw silly shapes on the dance floor long into the wee small hours, dancing to a final set by Sir Funk. Thoroughly recommended. Concorde 2, 15 June 2013 ✪✪✪✪✪ Tim Pilcher

WHAT’S ON COMEDY&FILM, ART&EVENTS
COMEDY: JIMMY CARR: GAGGING ORDER All over Channel 4, hosting every panel show, plus topical chat on The 10 O’clock Show, & now back to stand-up
W
hat with all the TV panel hosting, round ups of the various years, spot of acting and writing of best-selling books as a comedy pundit, you’d be forgiven for thinking that stand-up was simply a means to an end for Jimmy Carr. He’s on the telly, got the profile, so why doesn’t he just put his feet up? Because stand-up is still what he does the very best. James Anthony Patrick Carr is almost constantly gigging, alongside his various other highly successful roles, earning him the reputation of one of the hardest working comedians in comedy today. This tour started last year and Carr’s still adding extra dates to it, at some of the biggest theatre venues in the country, and yet resisting those arena shows which have proven so controversial amongst comedy connoisseurs in recent years. Requesting that you ‘leave your conscience, sense of common decency and moral compass at home and come on out for a laugh’, Gagging Order (Jimmy’s latest show) is more of the same sharp writing, tight gags, and knee-jerk laughs before you realise what’s tickled you. Jimmy Carr has gone on record as saying his favourite kind of laugh to hear is the monster feral guffaw followed by the gasp of realisation at what you’re laughing at, so expect plenty of those aimed straight for the very edge of your comfort zone. His shows aren’t themed around an event or topic, like a lot of his fellow comics favour, instead simply aiming to make you laugh in all manner of different ways. And what could be better than that? Jimmy Carr – Gagging Order, Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, Tuesday 25 June, 8pm, £25

ith seven albums under his belt it seems the Texas born (raised in Venezuela) singer Devendra Banhart (his parents were both acolytes of Indian guru Prem Rawat, who gave Devendra his first name, which is another name for the Lord Indra, the Hindu god of rain) has renewed his eclectic sound, even got rid of his beard, but he’s still got his freak folk on even if it has been tamed a little... Born in Houston, Texas, he’s resided in Los Angeles, Paris and Venezuela, and now lives in New York City. Upon arriving back in America aged 13, he couldn't speak any English, and this has perhaps helped him develop an idiosyncratic style, musically and artistically, where salsa, merengue and cumbia meets Nirvana via Vashti Bunyan. Already on his eighth album, Mala depicts the sad echoes of ruined affection, and was once again made with his longtime bandmate, guitarist Noah Georgeson. They played most of the instruments, using borrowed equipment and a vintage Tascam recorder they’d found in a pawn shop, lending the album a more fragmented feel than normal. Banhart’s penchant for self-mocking has given way to a new found confidence; his previous hippie look being replaced by something approaching dapper; he's even been appearing in adverts with his photographer fiancée, Ana Kras. But that vibrato remains, as does his random kookiness, something he plays up to, maddeningly sometimes, whether as a musician or as an artist, a parallel career that has seen him exhibited around the world. He always does his own artwork. Banhart’s previous release, 2009’s What Will We Be, was critical acclaimed, with Rolling Stone calling it “the best he’s ever made”. The Los Angeles Times said the record “found him making comfortable, laid-back folk that didn’t sound like a compromise – more like an artist growing into his own.” For Banhart, his career remains “an adventure and an exploration.” Mala reveals a natural maturation of his style, especially as a singer. Banhart admits: “I don’t really take care of my voice, but, just like with playing guitar, you get more familiar with it, and you get better at it. I’ve always said that I’m very good at not knowing how to play the guitar but, really, it’s just that I’m very comfortable with the utter uncertainty of my approach.” Rather self-deprecating to the last, he calls his music ‘unpopular pop music’. However, his many fans would beg to disagree – this show sold out a long time ago... The Old Market, Friday 28 June, 7pm, SOLD OUT

F
rom gifted teenage upstarts and students honing an industry-ready craft to ageing rockers who’ve toured the globe, it’s fair to say few towns offer more in terms of musical multiplicity, personality and quality than this fair seaside town. We think it would be remiss of a place that demands so much of the music world’s attention not to take the time to look inward and celebrate itself, and ‘The Brights’ – founded by music producer and songwriter David Courtney – do exactly that. On Friday 28 June, awards for eight categories, from ‘Best Video’ to ‘Best Venue’, will be handed out by local celebrity Ralph Brown (Withnail And I) and high-profile industry names including Simon Price – music journalist and author – to the individuals and groups that make Brighton’s scene what it is. You can join us at Latest Musicbar for the party! There’ll be no lack of entertainment with live performances from local favourites including; The Dead Reds, Kovak, Jacko Hooper, Fragile Creatures, Kenelis & Tom Stanniford, and an after party featuring alt-rockers Black Bonds then DJs extending the celebrations until the early morning. Tickets are only £5 and can be purchased online from tinyurl.com/BMAtickets but do hurry in case there are none left on the door. Keep up to speed on breaking news about the ceremony on Facebook (www.facebook.com/BrightonLovesMusic) and Twitter (@BrightonAwards) Bmusic and Latest TV will be there filming all the action and we hope to see you there as we celebrate our unique music scene and the many people that make it what it is. ooking good is the one thing every girl wants on a night out, so this week I’m going to share some of my tips and tricks on how to do it! When it comes to getting dressed for a night out, most of us try on about 20 different outfits and stress about none of them looking good. What you have to remember is this: as long as you’re comfortable people will notice your confidence and compliment you on how you look. If you’re a Size 10 (or thereabouts), go for a sophisticated, mid-length figure-hugging dress paired with a statement pair of heels. It seems to be the fashion at the moment. Stand out from the crowd by glitzing it up a bit with a large chest necklace and a pair of studs. Don’t go overboard with the glitz as less is more. If you were blessed with a fuller figure then opt for leggings, a nice top and a blazer – comfortable yet sophisticated. Try and match your heels with either your blazer or your top but never the leggings – unless they are black. If you’re a fan of fake tan, keep it in place with a spritz of hairspray all over (yes, really!). It prevents the tan running if a drink is spilt on you! The next step is hair and make-up: when applying your make-up, remember less is more! Try going for the popular smokey eye look but keep it subtle for the summer. If you’re not confident enough to try it, then simple eyeliner and mascara will still make your eyes stand out. Pick a lipstick that either matches your outfit or compliments your skin tone; it makes such a difference in photos (trust me). When it comes to your hair, don’t try too hard. During the summer, natural hair looks best. Worn down, straight or curly, or a simple bun or the Kim Kardashian pony in my eyes are the best looks. Also don’t use too much hairspray in the summer because you will end up in a sticky mess. It may seem a lot of hard work but the less you stress the better you will look. Tweet me (@SadeAli) your pics of you and your friends on your night out, and we will share the best. Good luck, girlies!

f I were writing for The Guardian this column would simply say “Andy Hinton Is Away”, or something, as I am currently residing in 40°+ temperatures, about 20 metres from the Red Sea in the diving and hippy enclave of Dahab. Music here consists of lots of Bob Marley, the worst DJs I have ever heard – humorous attempt at beat mixing ‘Jump Around’ with some house tune the other night – and one bar has discovered the wonderful Laura Marling, well her second album anyway, which is a nice relief from the constant Bob Marley. The best stuff is actually the Egyptian party music which consists of Arabic drumming, some great singing/wailing with a bit of hip-hop and house thrown in for good measure but as I’m not Andy Kershaw I haven’t a clue what any of it is. We are heading into festival season so the number of gigs is declining. There’s some great stuff constantly being Monsters Build announced for later in the year Mean Robots but this week is a bit of mixed bag; old-stagers and one that sold out long ago. There are though enough others of interest to satisfy. The Black Angels are at The Haunt on Tuesday night. A band I’d not heard of, their noisy psych-rock sounds mighty fine. For fans of Spacemen Three and Wooden Shjips. On Wednesday Brighton Noise is showcasing three local bands at The Albert, all rather good and totally different. Self described electro/math-rockers Cat Fire Radio, Brighton’s very own Beach House, dreampoppers The Hundredth Anniversary and the post-rock of Monsters Build Mean Robots. On the same night yet another talented Canadian band are at The Haunt. Harmonious indie-folky Half Moon Run have a bit of the Fleet Foxes about them, fortunately without the pompousness and erm, yawnsomeness. The rest of the week sees Public Image Limited and Paul Weller playing big (and pricey) shows. Hippy Folkster Devendra Banhart is at The Old Market on Thursday. It sold out eons ago but we have a nice preview on the site for people lucky enough to have tickets. On Saturday at The Duke Of Yorks there is something going on featuring ridiculously prolific lo-fi local lass, Keel Her. I’m not too sure what it is but it starts at 11pm and is sure to be interesting. That’s all folks, I’m off to enjoy some sun. More info at www.brightonnoise.co.uk

STARS With Val Aviv
★ARIES {Mar 21–Apr 20}
Luck could favour you if you try to move home, so consider the rest of the year a good time to make that fortuitous and overdue change. Your ruler is still rocketing through Gemini, while most things that you hear said sound like fighting talk, maybe your interpretation is defensive.
★TAURUS {Apr 21–May 21}

★CANCER {June 22–July 22}
The biggest astrological movement of significance this week is Jupiter’s move into your sign. At first glance, one must allude immediately to the auspiciousness of this. You’re actually feeling rather positive, and you will be rather lucky. But luck only favours the brave, so take a leap of faith.
★LEO {July 23–Aug 22}
Sacrifices you make in love could leave you feeling that you are owed some displays of appreciation. If this is not met, you may be disgruntled. The extent of your negative feelings could be an indication of the extent to which you are feeling shortchanged.
★VIRGO {Aug 23–Sep 22}
Your social diary is going to pick up as you branch out into the expansion of new interests. Your dreams for the future can be cooked amongst like minded people. One particular friend may be in need of your help and a friendly ear.

★SAGITTARIUS {Nov 22–Dec 20}
Your ruler has grown weary of the meandering around the partnership sector of your chart, from this week forth a newness follows as a process of great transformation is afoot. Joint finances are highlighted as are long term investments.
★CAPRICORN {Dec 21–Jan 19}
Partnerships become more important as Jupiter moves into your opposite sign of Cancer. Being in love or a committed relationship is bound to be the fasted way to expand your horizons or indeed travelling, exploring and learning together is likely. A special someone may be looking for emotional support.
★AQUARIUS {Jan 20–Feb 19}
Keeping busy is the new lounging around as Jupiters significant influence inspires in you the desire to take on more than you can chew. Try and remain realistic as the tendency is to overpromise and underdeliver which can ruin people’s plans.

friday 28 Big Brother: Live Eviction Channel Five, 9pm Emma Willis is the ringmaster of tonight’s eviction proceedings after a more than likely heated week in the Big Brother house. Tension builds, and we catch up on just what the key points have been in the house for the last 24 hours, before one of the housemates is ceremoniously chucked out to the public.
Glastonbury 2013 BBC2, 10pm The mother of all festivals warrants its monster coverage to straddle both BBC2 and BBC3 for the weekend. With proceedings hosted by Jo Whiley, Mark Radcliffe and Lauren Laverne, there’s live shows and highlights of the day looked back at, in this rather comprehensive coverage. Arctic Monkeys play tonight.
2 Broke Girls E4, 8.30pm Our broke girls are on the hunt for work and find themselves as extras on a TV show shooting a scene at the diner. How very convenient! What’s even more handy is that Caroline gets offered a smidge more cash for an actual role – Hollywood beckons... until the strings attached become apparent.

But the formation of Eurasia is just the beginning of the story, because the process that formed it is still active today. Prof Stewart travels to the island of Stromboli, Italy’s most continually active volcano. The volcano’s spectacular eruptions show that the ocean floor is being pulled beneath Eurasia. It is this process that closed the Tethys, and today is closing the Mediterranean, revealing Eurasia’s future. 10.00 Glastonbury 2013 Coverage from the Glastonbury festival.
