Brace harbours home hopes Property developer Colin Brace wants to build sustainable homes on the edge of Shoreham Harbour. Not everyone’s so keen. Frank le Duc reports

T

he fate of a scheme to build 52 homes at the Hove end of Shoreham Harbour is due to be decided in three weeks’ time. Few would disagree that more new homes are needed in Brighton and Hove or that the number of new homes needed is in the thousands. But those living closest to proposed sites tend to have the most concern and are the likeliest to object. And so it is with Portzed. The scheme is the brainchild of property developer Colin Brace, of Boho Green. Mr Brace grew up in Portslade and has lived in the Brighton and Hove area all is life. He has consistently been a keen proposer of environmentally friendly buildings. Portzed is the greenest of them all. The “zed” part of the Portzed name stands for zero energy development. It has echoes of Bedzed, a pioneering zero energy development in Beddington, London. The Bedzed scheme was designed by the acclaimed Bill Dunster, from Zed Factory. He has also been a key player in the Portzed proposal along with the Hove architect Alan Phillips. The ideas that they have used in their designs are to achieve the end results that will soon become compulsory in planning and energy law.

Brighton & Hove City Council leader Jason Kitcat on council services & budget cuts

C

ouncils across the country are struggling as the government inflicts huge cuts on local services. Though councillors of all political parties have spoken out about the impact year after year of cuts is having on local services, the political party conferences have given us further confirmation that all three major parties are committed to austerity. Whether there is a Conservative or Labour led government in 2015, they will continue starving local public services of vital funding until at least 2020.

Eighteen months ago their original plans for 67 homes, including 26 “affordable” homes, were turned down by the Brighton and Hove City Council Planning Committee. The decision followed a campaign by the specially formed Kingsway and West Hove Residents Association (KAWHRA). The most vocal opposition concerned the prospect of five sets of helical wind turbines as part of the scheme. Opponents also criticised the height and scale of the scheme. They were worried that some homes in Kingsway would suffer a loss of sunlight. The campaigners were led by a widely respected retired family doctor Mike Sharman, who lives opposite the site. And they benefited from the determined support of one of the scheme’s concerned neighbours Jane Galvin and expert input from retired planning official Sue Moffatt. After the first Portzed application was turned down, the first thing that Mr Brace did was seek out his opponents. He said at the time: “Naturally we are disappointed. We have listened very carefully to what members of the planning committee and our neighbours have had to say.” He added that he was determined to

We, as a council, provide over 800 services across the city including libraries, children’s centres, public health, parks and public safety services. Furthermore our educational provision, services for vulnerable adults and children, and housing services or support make up three quarters of our annual spending. This and more information about council spending is available as part of the consultation we are launching to get views from everyone in the city on how they think we should shape our approach for the coming financial year as we balance reducing budgets and increasing demands for services.

the big issue come back with proposals that would both prove acceptable and be an exemplar of sustainable development. CHANGES So now Portzed is back. And changes have been made. Mr Brace said: “The major differences are that we’ve removed the turbines and we’ve reduced the height of four out of the six lozenge-shaped buildings. We’ve taken two floors off the end buildings, then a floor off the next two buildings and the two in the centre remain the same height. The two central

buildings are five storeys. The two end ones are now three storeys. There are gaps of eight metres between each of the buildings.” The number of storeys is measured from Kingsway although the site address is Basin Road North which runs from the edge of Hove Lagoon along the north side of the harbour. Below the 52 homes, the plans include shops, offices and storage space. The old Magnet showroom would be demolished with the company expected to be occupy part of the proposed development.

We are launching an online tool for everyone to use to explore the budget and tell us what they want to see. We’ve written directly to a random selection of residents to invite them to participate too, and will continue to promote the consultation in other ways. It's open to everyone, so do get involved. While here in Brighton & Hove we’ve managed to make significant investments in major infrastructure and money-saving

projects, things will be far from easy over the next few years. So it’s all the more important that residents, community organisations and businesses in the city tell us what they want our spending priorities and local services to look like next year and into the future. More information and ways to provide feedback can be found at http://www.brightonhove.gov.uk/bhbudget

LATEST NEWS 07 the new Vega building – the old Caffyns premises – as an example of what can be achieved. Early plans were much taller and the scheme was the subject of a number of planning applications before the current version was agreed. KAWHRA wants the height of the Vega building to be treated as an acceptable limit for the area. The difficulty for the developer is ensuring that the scheme remains financially viable. Developers, including Mr Brace, expect to make a profit but they have to invest heavily upfront before they see a return. And one difficulty for the council is ensuring that each plot of land is used for a suitable amount of housing.

building was the benchmark. Doubts were expressed, including by the council’s senior planning official, about the validity of the amendment. It will be tested by the Portzed application. Mr Brace believes that advice to the council from the Building Research Establishment (BRE) could prove critical. He said: “The development brief was formulated around a number of background documents. The most relevant of these was a BRE report. This wasn’t something we submitted. It’s the most relevant in respect of height – and the most current.” It contained a review of daylight and sunlight and looked at the effect

“It’s about balancing the city’s needs with the needs of neighbours”

Mr Brace talked through the changes with those living near by at a meeting arranged by KAWHRA. One of those present said: “This scheme doesn’t overcome the reasons for objecting to the first application. The big issue with this development – and it’s quite fundamental – is that the city needs more housing but is it any cost? Or is it through development that fits its context. It’s about balancing the city’s needs with the needs of neighbours.” Those closest to the Portzed site fear “a looming presence” and cite

TARGET In a fortnight’s time a planning inspector will start holding public hearings about the City Plan. This is the document mapping out the way that land will be allocated for housing, shops, offices, leisure and other uses until 2030. It sets a target of building more than 11,000 homes – several thousand short of the estimated need. It proposes siting 400 of those homes in Shoreham Harbour. If Portzed has to be reduced in size and scale, the council will be even further from meeting its housing obligations. This is part of the tricky balancing act for planning officials and politicians. Experts have been asked to help set acceptable planning policies, including one known as the development brief for Aldrington Basin – the Hove end of the harbour. When the brief was adopted last month, councillors made a lastminute amendment to try to restrict building heights along Kingsway, opposite existing housing. The Vega

of building heights and the shadows they would cast. Mr Brace said: “The analysis assumes a continuous wide obstruction. Residents could face a solid development with no gaps. We’re proposing a development with five eight-metre gaps allowing a sense of maritime openness.” He said that the gaps had been designed with houses across Kingsway in mind and said that the Vega building was much closer to the homes immediately behind it. Permission has already been granted for a four-storey building – without any gaps – on a neighbouring site. And, despite the amendment to the local development brief, recent changes in planning law and policy have shifted the ground in favour of developers. Mr Brace and those opposing Portzed have worked hard to keep the debate on reasonable terms and it has been conducted with courtesy. But in the coming few weeks there will be some tough talking and a hard decision on a crucial question for Brighton and Hove. ■

ou’ve probably all heard by now that Brighton’s been named the worst resort in the UK with a huge 40 per cent of the vote. It even beat out competition from Blackpool, Bournemouth and... Skegness?! I’ve been known to be harsh on the place myself from time to time; it’s got an air of the self-righteous about it and all that tofu and hemp clothing... oy! It’s home to more layabouts and libertines than the Prince Regent ever even dreamed of, it’s too affluent to be interesting or edgy any more, its politics is comical on a good day and depressing on a bad day and the parking... well, it makes the songs Nick Cave writes sound like Euphoric House (or something else you might find uplifting). But you know when you moan about your mum to someone and they listen, nod quietly, smile sympathetically and then... they start slagging her off too, and suddenly you’re all like, “you don’t talk about my mama like that, biatch!”? Well, seaside resort voters of the world, if you don’t like it here, do one. We really won’t miss you clogging up our beaches at the merest hint of sunshine. So you think Brightonians have “chips on their shoulders”? Do you actually know what would happen if we put chips on our shoulders? Because I for one would love to see you lot come down to the seafront and put chips on your shoulders. You know how there aren’t any gangsters here any more a la Graham Greene, because we priced them all out of the market with love, peace and fat bonuses from The City? Well, we replaced them with some pretty badass seagulls. You think club security are borderline criminal hooligans? Just try slinging pebbles at one of our genetically modified beach bouncers and see what happens. I promise you, they haven’t been eating tofu. Nathalie Calonnec

“We’re more likely to turn out something great because of the sheer volume we produce and the atmosphere we nurture”

And as for being, “full of bohemians and bad art”, well, yes, it is. But anywhere where there’s a high concentration of artists means a lot of it’s going to be rubbish. However, it also means that we’re more likely to turn out something great because of the sheer volume we produce and the atmosphere we nurture. And quite frankly... at least we’re trying to better ourselves. Oh, and you’ve got a problem with us introducing ‘Mx’ as a gender neutral option for transsexuals on our paperwork? Well thank God we don’t have to live with you. I’ve been travelling around the country a lot recently, after spending all my life thus far in Brighton and London, and I genuinely assumed that the world was a pretty tolerant, intellectually evolved place. I’ve never witnessed racism or discrimination based on sexuality. I’ve only ever heard about it in the papers and on TV, except for when those thugs and Godless church groups appear from outer space one weekend a year and we drown them in rainbow-coloured unicorn manure. I mean, I knew it existed, but somehow I thought it was a small problem. However, I’ve come to realise that, though it isn’t necessarily violent or even aggressive, and is often cloaked in casual humour, discrimination is rife in our country. How lucky I’ve felt to have been brought up in a place where prejudice wasn’t an option, because I didn’t even know it existed. So yes, Brighton is obnoxiously pleased with itself, but it has every right to be.

PRESIDENTIAL HORROR SHOW

xxx

We’re excited to be working on the up-coming Eelus show at Ink_d Gallery, which opens next week. Wigan born Eelus entered the world of street art after moving to London in 2000. He was almost instantly snatched up by master printmakers Pictures On Walls after street legend Eine noticed his work on the grimy walls of East London. Eine, whose work was famously given to Obama as a gift from David Cameron, certainly knows a thing or two about art, and Eelus’ show is set to be amazing. For his first solo show in his new home town, Eelus has decided to step away from the child friendly, rainbow like images he’s had so much success with over the last couple of years and return to his darker roots. ‘Horrorshow’ will feature a brand new body of work made from hand-cut paper that focuses entirely on his number one love of horror imagery from the silver-screen, pulp comics and classic literature. The Halloween show encourages horror fancy dress for its opening night (17 October) and there may be a little gruesome gift for all those who make the effort – so please let us know if you want to pop along! For more info on the show visit www.ink-d.co.uk

CAMPAIGN STYLE

O

ur favourite attendee at the recent Labour conference in Brighton had to be Eddie Izzard, (well-manicured) hands down. Eddie was spotted during conference week strolling along Brighton seafront wearing lipstick and high-heels, clearly comfortable back in the county he grew up in! The self proclaimed ‘executive transvestite’, hilarious comic and marathon man is a life-long Labour supporter and took to the stage at the conference to discuss the abuse he has suffered as a cross-dresser, including an assault which took place in London’s Leicester Square. Izzard pointed to the assaults as the deciding factor in his decision to pursue the title of Labour Mayor of London, and explained: “I think people should be able to live their lives freely. I want people to realise they can be different. I want to raise awareness, to help people accept it’s okay to do what you want – and me getting into a position like that will help.” Is there no end to this man’s drive? Of course our funny-man won’t actually be able to fight an election until 2020 – but if he makes it as a possible candidate, we just know he’ll be the most glamorous!

THE WANTED’S HAIRY MOMENT!

So The Wanted caused a stir at the recent SD2 Festival in Stanmer Park by, um, giving away a sock full of singer Jay McGuiness’ hair. Not particularly known for his curls – unlike, say a certain Harry Styles (not that we’re fuelling the band rivalry...) – it was still apparently such a big deal that McGuinness had his locks (half) shaved off, that bandmate Max George took to saving them. SD2 Festival then saw the band lob the sock into a crowd of screaming girls, one of which was lucky enough to bat them all off for the follicular prize. She was so enthralled by the gift that she later took to Twitter to assure the boys it had gone to a good home. Hurrah for Jay’s hair!

The most famous ‘bass face’ in history – that of Haim’s guitarist Este – saw somewhat of a birth here in Brighton according to the band’s recent interview with Spin Magazine. Este, who has attracted attention, parody Twitter accounts and even Facebook pages due to the facial gymnastics she employs whilst rocking out with her sisters, has become nothing short of an internet sensation. The recent interview saw drummer ‘Dash’ relay his defining moment with the much lauded ‘bass face’ at Brighton’s pioneering Great Escape Festival. Dash recalled: “We were downstairs in a sweaty room somewhere in Brighton and I looked over at Este and she was just like a wild woman. I had this moment and was like, ‘holy s***, this is the band I want to play with, this is the bass player, she is more ferocious than any of the dudes I've ever played with’.” We’re not surprised that Great Escape has birthed another musical phenomenon – with the likes of Adele and Disclosure debuting at the festival in past years – but this creation is one we’re particularly intrigued by...

Thanks for the memories A

m I losing my mind? I don’t think so, well not in any major way. I’m terrible with names but not with faces, but that’s no new thing, I’ve always been bad with names. It’s probably due to inefficient filing in the spider’s web that is my memory. I can remember the lyrics to crass pop songs that I never ever liked, but can’t put a name to a face. Of course some of that could be put down to the fact that, through this organ, I know so many people. I love that, I love the kind people that say hello on the bus, passengers and drivers alike. I like the man who sells The Big Issue and calls me Michael Winner, which is even more poignant since his death. I don’t even care if being well known is for being popular or for being notorious, who cares? It does drive some people mad, especially when the cheery greetings slow down our progress through town, especially now that I have abandoned driving in favour of the lovely buses. It drives Mum completely mad, much as she loves it in one way, she hates it taking up so much time. Mum passed 81 a few weeks back and is showing no signs of mental decrepitude, her memory is as sharp as ever and she will readily take anyone to task if they dare doubt her recollections. Of course since Dad passed away, almost a year ago now, the worry has been how she will cope living alone after 63 years of marriage? She’s not so steady as she was but she is doubly stubborn. That said, she has given in to using a walking stick, when she remembers to, although I do fear that one slight might induce its conversion to an offensive weapon.

just as she would physically if we were in the same room and I was taking too long to play. She has also signed up to Facebook and already has accrued a good list of friends. I use Facebook less and less, but I’m happy to see that she finds it a useful way to keep in touch. She has also discovered Facetime. Now this is also a good thing – except that she tends to just dial, irrespective of where I am or what I might be doing – and no, she’s not done it in an embarrassing moment, merely at inconvenient times, like when I am getting ready for work or on the bus. Still, it’s a great way to see her each day and know that she is doing well. There’s certainly no worry that she is losing her marbles.

“Mum passed 81 and is showing no signs of mental decrepitude, sharp as ever, she will take anyone to task if they dare doubt her recollections”

She recently purchased an iPad. She rather fell in love with mine when I was home and I discovered a broadband router in the spare room which she confessed she had no idea about. It turns out that she has had broadband for several years but with no apparent need for it until now. We play Scrabble online every day, and if I dare to return a move she is fast to cyber nudge me,

Unlike Sir Terry Pratchett whose medical problem is a worry to his fans globally. The prolific writer was this year’s City Reads choice. The live audience event was superbly managed and I was lucky enough to be asked along to the post talk party at Pub du Vin. There I had the chance to say hello. I wander over and said hi. He looked deep into my eyes and said nothing for a long moment, than quietly he spoke. “We’ve met before.” “Yes,” I replied. Another pause. “It was Victor Gollancz, yes?” And it was. I was art director and designed several of his novels there. He may well be suffering from a degenerative condition, but the man is far from losing his marbles. We chatted a while and it’s all there, just a little deeper down than before but as beautiful as ever. Read Andrew Kay’s full review of Terry Pratchett & Friends on page 18.

ONLY JOKING!

Bare cheek Brian Mitchell and Joseph Nixon’s thoroughly scurrilous Brighton column

Up the proverbial More handy sayings for the 21st century “The doctor with the sharpest knife Will save your life. The doctor with a knife that’s blunt Is derelict in his responsibilities.”

“Drink brine, Feel fine. Drink stew, Get you!”

“One two – how’d you do? Three four – there’s the door. Five six – building bricks. Seven eight – plumber’s mate. Nine ten – burly men.”

“A man buys a Euromillions scratchcard is literally giving his money away.”

“In a world of freeview televisions A digibox has no power.” “Tramps make poor housekeepers, but housekeepers make very good tramps.” “The beaver builds its dam, The buffalo roams the plain, The bear hunts in the valley, I’m not going there again.”

Ask Mike Can’t remember the name of a book, song or film? Mike Hunter is the man with the answers... Dear Mike, In Music at school I remember our teacher once played a recording of a piece that has stayed with me. (Sadly the same cannot be said of its title!) It was a set of variations written to introduce children to the various sections of the orchestra – each variation displaying the unique characteristics of a particular orchestral instrument. At the end all the instruments are brought in one by one for a giant fugue, at the climax of which the brass blare out the splendid theme by Henry Purcell on which the variations are based. It’s wonderful, stirring stuff, brimming with Post-War optimism.

Annoyingly, as I know next to nothing about Classical music, I have forgotten not only the name of the piece, but also of its composer, who, for some reason, I feel certain was from Britain, was a conscientious objector during WWII, had a life-long gay relationship with tenor Peter Pears, founded the Aldeburgh Festival, and is now being celebrated nationwide during this, his centenary year. Please help. David Preston, West Hove. Dear David, I too first heard the piece you describe when I was a ‘young person’, and found it an indispensible ‘guide’ to the various families of instruments that make up the modern symphony ‘orchestra’. Interesting, too, that you feel certain the composer was from Britain as, coincidentally, his name is almost its homonym, if spelt differently. Got it yet? That’s right – it’s ‘The Space Invaders Meet The Purple People Eater’ by Russ Abbott. Keep those letters flooding in! Mike.

“Love makes the primrose bloom, the donkey bray, and the meter reading not correspond with the estimate.”

“A man is only as good as he’s cracked up to be.” “A friend who will sleep with your wife will most likely use your razor too.” “An Englishman’s home is his asset.”

ART AT FIVE

Art at Five is 10! Art at Five, Brighton’s most successful contemporary art gallery, celebrates its 10th anniversary this month with a special fundraising event for drop4drop

T

o mark the occasion, gallery owner Paola Calise has come up with the idea of a unique fundraising art event called ten for 10. Ten of the gallery’s most popular artists are donating ten original paintings for a charity art raffle, with all proceeds going to Brighton based water aid charity drop4drop. Raffle tickets cost just £10 and with paintings valued from £300 to £1000, ten for 10 offers the chance to own a piece of artwork for a fraction of the price, whilst contributing to a really worthwhile cause. You can view the paintings and buy tickets either at the gallery or online, at www.artatfive.com/raffle. The raffle will close on Monday October 14th and winners will be announced via Latest 7 and the art at five website on Tuesday October 22nd. Artists taking part in the raffle include Lisa Ridgers, whose paintings feature on two of the most successful programmes on US network TV, The Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half

Men, Philippe Aird, who was taught at an early age by L.S Lowry, hugely popular Devon artist Yvonne Coomber and one of South Africa’s leading artists, Natasha Barnes. Brighton artists Louise Brooks and Tina Davies have painted pieces especially for the charity raffle and artists Deborah Flueeler-Jones, Maureen Greenwood, Nick Vivian and David Walker have also donated beautiful paintings. Paola Calise explains “After ten successful years in the city we wanted to do something really special to celebrate our 10th anniversary. The idea of ten artists donating works of art to raise funds for a Brighton based charity seemed perfect. Our artists were extremely generous in donating their pictures and we now hope the public get on board and help us raise money for what is an inspirational charity." drop4drop is a hugely important charity working globally to help people who have no access to clean water. It runs projects that, for as

little as £1, can provide a person with safe, clean drinking water for life. art at five hope to raise enough money to fund a well for the Chennavaram community in East India, who currently have to walk 2km every day to collect contaminated water from unprotected sources. art at five would like to invite everyone to come along and celebrate their milestone birthday with them over the weekend of October 12 –

13th. Drinks and refreshments will be provided by Brighton café Moksha, a recent finalist in the Brighton and Hove Food and Drink awards, and the famous Brighton chocolatiers Choccywoccydoodah, with awardwinning wines from Barefoot Wines, who will be introducing their new Pink Moscato bubbly. 14 L7 INTERVIEW

It’s a kind of magic!

Everybody’s favourite family television magician Paul Daniels is in town with a new show! Victoria Nangle delved deep into his bag of tricks to find out more about the show, Wizbit & where all the rabbits end up How has your day been today? “Pretty good. I was wide awake at 3am – and I am not kidding – so I got up and sorted out all the music and the cues for the Stage Manager. Then got everything into boxes and with the SM we packed the van and it has headed north for the first date of the tour.” Your weekend and kids shows helped mould a generation. Will Wizbit ever be available on DVD? “Everybody asks me about Wizbit. Every day messages, tweets, letters and face to face, come into the office and yet not one TV company picked up on the programme. We tried very hard last year to get it going. I do own all the rights to the little fella so I may well copy the old shows onto DVDs.”

“In my lifetime everything has been either very good or very bad for me, according to various ‘health’ gurus, so I eat a little bit of everything and a lot of nothing.” What do you think of the emergence of modern illusionists and street magicians like Dynamo? “Street entertainers have always been there, from way back in history. ‘Emergence’ is the wrong word. Anybody visiting London, for hundreds of years, would have seen buskers. I like them.” What do you think of the Operation Yewtree revelations, as a former BBC employee of that time? “I don’t know enough about it to be able to give an informed opinion.”

What is your favourite trick you “In my lifetime ever pulled off on television? I remember you fooling a nation that you’d been killed by a falling everything has bed of nails live on TV. Did you been either very really get into any trouble for that, or was it all good show? good or very “The national press did make out that I received lots of complaints bad for me...” whereas the truth was we blocked the switchboards for three days with concerned viewers wanting to make sure I was okay. It was a great illusion to pull off on live TV.” What trick do you immediately go to when a cabbie/waiter/any fan approaches you and asks if you could amaze them now? “That depends where I am, what I'm wearing, what’s in my pockets... I can do magic with just about anything. That's not boasting... That's a lot of reading, studying and practising.” What wonders should be expect in your new show ‘From Legend To Leg End’? “Most people wonder at how funny the shows are. We get great reviews on the social media sites from customers and they always refer to the comedy. The tricks, large and small however, have to be baffling or they don’t go in the show. I am constantly updating and changing the tiny details that go into every effect. This show has illusions, mind reading, insane comedy...” How would you recommend maintaining a suppleness of joints for such excellent sleight of hand and dexterity?

Some of our readers were especially keen to ask you a few questions, if you wouldn’t mind: Most magicians say that your Ball and Cup routine is definitive. How long did it take to nail a routine as complex as that and make it seem effortless?

“You really only learn the nuances of any performance on the stage, no matter how hard you rehearse. That particular trick was pretty good first time out, otherwise I wouldn’t have done it, but it took 18 months of performances before I was happy.” Who would you most like to see disappear? “I don’t know really. The oddity is that since I got rabbits as pets I find it hard to even kill a spider. Nowadays I look at bugs and flying insects and think that they have just as much right to life as I have. Perhaps that’s weird but that’s how I feel. So ‘disappear’? No, but there’s a lot of people I would like to ask ‘Why?’ about things that they have done and are doing.” Where did all the rabbits go? “Our rabbits, according to the local pet shops, are the most pampered and loved rabbits in the area. White, with blue eyes, they used to be in the act, but as they are not in the show on this tour, they are enjoying a luxurious retirement.” Paul Daniels – From Legend To Leg End, Martlets Hall, Burgess Hill, Friday 11 October 2013, 8pm, £17.50, 01444 242888, www.freedom-leisure.co.uk Many thanks for the questions for Paul Daniels we received over Twitter and Facebook, most especially those from Adrian Hobart, Dan Fardell, Mike Jaimes, Roz Ryan and Stephen Saul. Don’t forget to follow @latestvicky.

Challenging perceptions

BRIGHTON MUSEUM & ART GALLERY

15

Subversive Design: a not-to-be-missed exhibition at Brighton Museum & Art Gallery

S

ubversive Design, Brighton Museum’s exciting new exhibition, runs from 12 October 2013 – 9 March 2014. It shows objects that challenge perceived ideas, contain hidden messages and address social issues and political comment. Historic exhibits, as well as modern and contemporary items by leading and emerging designers, are on display. The accepted brief for designers and makers has always been to produce well made goods, fit for practical use. However, many have also employed shape and decoration to ask questions about political and social issues of their times, or about form and function. These themes are illustrated and debated through 130 objects, divided into three sections: Big Michele Walker, No Home, No Hope Issues; Form Vs Function; and (1994); hessian, bin Subverting the Body. Here are liners, paper; coll. just a few examples. Royal Pavilion & Designers have used the chair Museums, Brighton to comment on, or ask questions about, uncomfortable political issues. For example, Michael Sanders comments on the Greenham Common issue with his piece, ‘Sitting Comfortably’ (1987), a chair form made from razor wire; whilst each ‘Favela Chair’ (2003), by the Campana Brothers, is assembled from scrap wood, referring to the sprawling shanty townships around Rio de Janeiro, where homes are constructed from a wide variety of recycled materials. Homelessness is another issue discussed. Michele Walker, who engages passionately with social issues, has constructed a quilt, ‘No Home, No Hope’, from disposable materials: hessian, newspaper, vinyl and bin liners. Racial stereotypes Humberto and Fernando Campana, Favela Chair (des. 1991); made by Edra Italy; coll. Royal Pavilion & Museums, Brighton

are explored through Simone Brewster’s ‘Negresse Chaise’ and ‘Mammy Table’ (2010), which represent the servant roles traditionally played by black women in mid-20th century Hollywood film. Several items show how designers have ‘transformed’ rubbish. Tapio Wirkkala’s ‘Tutenvasen’ (1970s) are ceramic vases fashioned to look like crumpled paper bags. Rebecca Joselyn reproduces exquisitely the crumpled forms of tins in precious metal, as seen in her silver ‘Crushed Can Jug’ (2009), which is lined with gold. Georgina Godley’s ‘Vest’ (c.1986) is an example of body modification, questioning the accepted notion of ideal body shapes, a theme taken up by many designers since. ‘Vest’ is a garment of padded underwear to be worn under a dress.

Fashion with political messages includes a Westwood/McLaren ‘Seditionaries’ outfit and, from an earlier period, the Regency ‘Empire’ line gown, inspired by dress from the Greek and Roman republics. ‘Empire’ line gowns, which became fashionable during the French Revolution, and reflected the new political structure of France under Napoleon and his Empire, were soon popular throughout Europe. The exhibition also explores the cult of the skull, now a trendy design motif, where once it would have been taboo, as

ANDREW KAY’S FOOD & DRINK

Food & Drink Andrew Kay indulges in Japanese Whiskey at the Brighton Japan Festival

Brighton Japan O

h, show me the way to the next whiskey bar, no don’t ask why! No really, don’t ask me why. Kurt Weill might have written a witty tune and Berthold Brecht a fun lyric, but whiskey needs to be taken pretty seriously, especially if, like me, you are a mere amateur, an occasional indulger. The Brighton Japan Festival is staged each year by those clever chaps at Moshimo. How they manage to run Brighton’s most successful Japanese eatery, an internationally acclaimed art project called Fish Love to promote the sustainable fishing movement and this massive cultural event beggars belief – but they do.

17

I was already exhausted from ten days of work at the Brighton and Hove Food Festival, but after Japanese Whiskey expert Dave had appeared on the Live Food Stage I was determined not to miss his full evening of high spirits and delicious food in the festival’s main pavilion. Sponsored by Suntory Whiskey, Japan’s leading distillery. Make no mistake, Japanese whiskey it no “Mickey Mouse” spirit. It is internationally acclaimed, as is Mickey Mouse I guess, and quite rightly so, for both of them. I was joined by Mr C for the evening, a first culinary outing with me, and not an easy introduction as it was going to be a heavy night. I was certainly sure that the food would be excellent, and it was, from start to finish we experienced the highest standard of Japanese cuisine that had the visiting Japanese experts bowing in respect. I particularly loved the sushi and sashimi, the fine miso soup and a stunning deep fried then pickled sardine. The salmon was great too as was the dessert, but the dessert might have been a dish too far when set against the fine array of spirits that Mr Broom was going to talk about and have us taste. Now I suspect that few of us would consider an evening of foods matched to Scotch Whiskeys, a hefty concept, but somehow we were all gung-ho for this oriental event. And quite right we were too. We started out with cocktails, highballs, whiskey made long with good ice, soda and a sprig of mint. A great drink, serious and grown up but long and refreshing, unusual in the work of cocktails in my opinion. It was the introduction of soda and long drinks that has made whiskey the cocktail drink of choice in Japan, and amazing volumes of it can be consumed in the many small bars that exist there. At our tables we found four glasses with drinks already poured and covered with watch glasses to keep them good. We started to dine and with our first course we tasted the Hakushu 12 year old, a pale golden drink that was soft and delicate, no fire to speak of but a subtle warm glow and a refreshing nose. It worked so well with the sushi and sashimi. Our next was Hibiki 12 year old, darker in colour and in flavour but with a fruitiness that lasted in the mouth and sat very well with the miso soup dotted with fish. I loved it too with the exquisite pickled sardine. Mr C was doing well too although made no effort to tackle a fish cooked on the bone with a small pair of wooden chopsticks. Next to try was the Yamazaki 12 year old. This really was a golden drink and needs to match the sweet and savoury complexities of the salmon cooked with a terryaki glaze. It was an amazing match, spicy, long on the palate and with soft, almost buttery overtones. I wanted more and luckily more was to be had as a few of the less hardy guests were already falling by the wayside. The final course was a hefty chocolate mousse, seriously dark and deep and velvety. It was perhaps the easiest of matches, but at the same time it required something that would live up to the challenge. Yamazaki more than did, a dark and devilishly delicious drink that I sipped slowly, savouring every last drop. I’m a convert, which is a shame as Japanese whiskey comes at a price, but then again this is a drink to be savoured alone or with an intimate friend and never to be glugged en masse, except if you happen to be lucky enough to encounter Dave Broom in a Japanese bar. READ AND RIGHT

TERRY PRATCHETT & FRIENDS Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, 29 September 2013 ✪✪✪✪✪

P

ratchett is a legend that created a Legend. The international bestselling author emerged from a world of journalism and libraries and created Discworld, a mythical kingdom that rode on the back of four elephants who in turn were riding a giant turtle. If it all sounds a bit silly, the stuff of geeky students, then think again. Discworld is beautifully penned, richly funny and deeply subversive stuff that extracts the urine from the genre whilst at the same time enhancing it. Sadly in the last few years Pratchett has been diagnosed as having a form of Alzheimer’s. Despite this, the man continues to work and collaborate, and his live appearance for the City Reads project was a rare opportunity to hear the man himself talking about his books. Aided by two directors of his Narativa company they gave us a 90-minute treat, filled with wit and wisdom. Perhaps not as fast as in the past, his thoughts are as clear and incisive as ever. He shows no signs of giving in to the illness but certainly acknowledges it – “So many things to write, so little time.” He maintains a wonderfully dark side too – “Are there any school teachers here? Yes. I have a gun, you know!”. With readings from his new book, a few audience questions and lots of laughter, it was an afternoon of delight that once again affirmed that the City Reads project is more than worthwhile. Clearly his team look after him well and after 90 minutes he left with a few choice words: “Once you have no fear of dying the world is your mollusc”. No doubt Sir Terry will carry on adding to that rich fruits de mer that has been his literary career so far. Andrew Kay

THE 1975

With tour dates rapidly selling out and being thoroughly enjoyed at several festivals this summer, Manchester based indie-rock band The 1975 came to Brighton in the hope of pleasing a highly-eager audience. With the recent release of their self-titled debut album, there was anticipation for it to live up to the popular single ‘Chocolate’ which it did not fail to do. Although known as an alternative rock band, heavy influences of electro and guitar pop make this band much more likeable hence the tremendous sell-out success. Try not to miss these guys if you can help it. Concorde 2, 28 September 2013 ✪✪✪ Holly Cozens

JOE BONAMASSA

Wildly popular blues/rock practitioner Joe Bonamassa puts on a slick show, pressing his audience’s buttons with well-practised ease. Wearing a natty suit and wielding a selection of classic guitars, Joe’s arena-friendly blues is a record executive’s dream, and while his tunes and playing are both excellent, they lack a sense of individuality at times: now it sounds like Born Under A Bad Sign; this passage sounds like Jeff Beck. You know what you’re going to get with Joe, and with his powerful, emotive voice he delivered song after song, but it’s hard to picture him in a smoky Chicago dive. WHAT’S ON STAGE

STAGE: THE WHITE STUFF Worthing Theatres announce Russian State Ballet and Opera House to present Swan Lake

L

ittle says Christmas like a classic ‘white ballet’ and after last year’s success, The Russian State Ballet and Opera House is back to perform Swan Lake, the most famous ballet of all times, suitable for the whole family. There will be little surprise to any that this production will be delicate, intimate and powerful. The Company is known for its attention to detail and, more particularly, for its dramatisation in dance of the tragedy and beauty that this ballet is known for. This should prove an unforgettable journey in the run-up to Christmas; an ideal introduction to people of any age to the magic that is classical ballet as you become a part of the magic as it unfolds. We asked Alexej Ignatow, producer of Russian State Ballet & Opera House, what makes his company so unique and stand out from the rest? “Russian State Ballet and Opera House was founded to represent quality and passion for ballet and opera at the highest level,” says Alexej. “Unlike many other companies that travel to Europe with ballet and opera productions, we only focus on working with established theatres in the Russian Federation. These theatres have many years of experience and,

most importantly, they have an established spine of directors and leaders which have gone through the best artistic institutions in Russia and the former Soviet Union. “Our logo is the assurance of a quality production. Every year we aim to bring a different artist to the UK, which means that although you may have seen a Nutcracker ballet one year, next time the set, costumes, artists and even choreography will be different. It will feel like a different show altogether, but still with the same high level of quality.” With instantly recognisable music and a timeless story of good against evil, Swan Lake is the greatest of romantic Ballets. Swan Lake transforms the classical ballet into a fairy-tale featuring a timeless score from incredible composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky. And Swan Lake is the certified Russian classic, replete with that

TOTALLY COMPREHENSIVE!

evocative music and beautiful dance. Full of mystery and romance, this ballet has captured the imagination of many generations over the years, and continues to attract audiences worldwide and inspire both young and old. Alexej Ignatow adds: “We often get asked how would you encourage people who have never seen a ballet before, to come and attend a ballet for the first time? And my instant reply is that you don’t need to be an expert in classical ballet or music. We ensure that the set and costumes make the production easy to follow. The music is beautiful and sometimes even if you lost in the plot, just close your eyes to enjoy the music.” The story of Swan Lake is woven around two girls, Odette and Odile, who resemble each other so closely they can easily be mistaken for the other. A compelling legend of tragic romance tells the story of Odette, a Princess turned into a swan by an evil curse. Russian State Ballet and Opera House is an upholder of Russian cultural traditions, bringing the

19

passion and vibrancy of the Russian character to one of the most well-known ballets. They have ensured that this classic ballet remains just as spell bounding today as it was when it was composed over 130 years ago. It includes all the favourite elements of Tchaikovsky’s music too. The twinned role of the pure White Swan and the scheming, duplicitous Black Swan tests the full range of a ballerina’s powers, particularly in the two great pas de deux. Other highlights include the charming ‘Dance of the Little Swans’ performed by a moonlit lake and sweeping ballroom waltzes in the splendour of the Royal Palace. Swan Lake has become one of the most loved of all ballets. COMEDY: BRIGHTON COMEDY FESTIVAL As our city fills to the brim with even more comedic types than usual, we ask some of why it is that they love Brighton so... Vikki Stone “I love the Brighton Comedy Festival because the audiences in Brighton are always up for a proper laugh and know how to have a good time! I’m really looking forward to playing a bigger venue this year, as last year’s festival show totally sold out – which is always nice! “The best bit about performing in Brighton is, after the show, I’ll treat myself by playing on those 2p machines you get on the seafront. Oh, the rush you get when a keyring you’ll immediately throw in the bin when you get home, falls off with a pile of coppers. Unbeatable.” Vikki Stone: Definitely, Studio, Brighton Dome, Saturday 12 October, 7.45pm, £12/10

James Acaster “If I had to choose one thing I love about Brighton it would be the tunnel near the station that leads down to York Place. The acoustics are tremendous and every now and then there is a busker playing the saxophone in the tunnel. He was once playing ‘Careless Whisper’ – perfect. Hearing those melancholy tones reverberating off the tunnel walls was the perfect welcome to this quaint coastal town. I got so caught up in the moment I forgot to give the chap any money. If you see him please pass on my compliments, he’s a very good saxophonist.” James Acaster: Lawnmower, Studio Bar, Komedia, Thursday 17 October, 7pm, £12/10

Glenn Wool of the Lumberjacks “When I used to come to play the Komedia there was an elderly couple named Bill and Agnes that would take comics into their house as billets. I was a long way away from Canada and this was before Skype. They acted as surrogate grandparents to me on more than one occasion, steering me gently

towards correct choices without being authoritarian. The house got too big for them and they moved away to be closer to their children in middle England but I’ll always remember it as a little oasis in a hectic time for me and it’s not only one of my best memories of Brighton but it’s one of my favourite parts of my life.” Stewart Francis, Craig Campbell and Glenn Wool are The Lumberjacks, Corn Exchange, Brighton Dome, Saturday 12 October, 7.30pm, £16 Richard Vranch of Paul Merton’s Impro Chums “Paul Merton’s Impro Chums are back at the Brighton Dome on Friday 18 October. The Dome is one of the nicest rooms to perform or watch comedy in the UK. Improvised comedy relies on audience suggestions and the Brighton crowd always keeps us on our toes. Brighton has an impressive live comedy tradition, from Max Miller to Cliffhanger to Count Arthur Strong. Playing near the seafront gives you a sniff of what it must have been like doing a full summer season. These days just one night of Brighton’s famous hospitality is about all I can manage. Luckily we have a Magic Bus to whisk us away before it gets too messy... MUSIC: NADINE SHAH Jeff Hemmings talks to Nadine Shah ahead of her gig at The Hope

A

midst the mountain of tepid outpourings that pours out of World Indie, there are, thankfully, exceptions. Nadine Shah being one of those, an artist who, with the help of producer Ben Hillier, fashioned one of the albums of the year so far, Love Your Dum And Mad. Yep, you read that right. “It’s a painting by a friend of mine [the album’s artwork and name, both derived from artist Matthew Stephens-Scott] who died a few years ago,” says Nadine. “Some of the songs are about him, and others are about mental health issues.” The somewhat risqué/disturbing artwork delights Nadine though. “I’ve been seeing it on massive billboards where I live. That’s amazing!” Fusing the foreboding atmospherics of Massive Attack with the incessantly pounding chords of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds; sprinkle over some seriously heavy PiL type bass; and layer with the almost operatic voice of Nadine Shah (who as her name vaguely suggests is of Norwegian and Pakistani ancestry, but is born and bred in the sunny climes of South Tyneside) and you might be close. But the truth is, words can do little justice to this most surprising of records, a work born of good fortune. “It was nerve wracking initially,” says Shah, talking about Ben Hillier, “working with someone who had made many of the albums [including several of Blur’s best] I loved and adored growing up. But we got on immediately and began writing together. I consider what we have made together to be a completely collaborative project. I would bring in these shoddy garageband recordings into the studio, just my vocal and a simple piano line and Ben would add touches that gave the songs completely new characters.” With varied influences, from Nina Simone to Mariah Carey, allied to a a thirst for poetry, literature and fine art, and a willingness to tackle difficult subjects such as mental health head-on, Shah has already carved herself out as a distinct and meaningful voice within the often fickle and superficial world of ‘pop’. In person though, despite all this apparent seriousness, she is funny, and seemingly down to earth. Her first ever gig was at a packed industry event: “I hadn’t even played in front of my parents! I bought the keyboard that I used on the day, because I had forgotten to bring mine... How ridiculous! And after me was Ed Sheeran and the room was dead quiet for him. I remember patronising him by saying, ‘Oh, don’t worry love, I’m sure one day you’ll be selling out arenas!’” Nadine Shah, The Hope, Saturday 12 October, 8pm, £6.50

SADE ALI PARTIES THROUGH FRESHERS’ FLU AT AUDIO

W

ith the sniffles and a cough I am all bunged up with Freshers’ flu! But that still doesn’t stop me going out and having a good time. Freshers is the one time of the year I can act like a careless student without having to be one. You can even get away with wearing the same outfit twice in one week! During Freshers week, Brighton turns into the ultimate party city; nearly every bar, pub and club is full to the brim with people every night. The only annoying thing is that I have found my favourite nights already and now need to find some space to explore other club nights. I do have one evening in mind that I am looking forward to though. At Above Audio on 16 October there are a few bands playing that I’m excited to go and see. Faux Flux, 9.15pm: Faux Flux is the electronic/indie project from Brighton, driven by producer and songwriter Alex Ensoll, who was then joined by drummer Demelza Mather in early 2013. With musical elements of electro, indie, and pop mixed into the fusion, the band’s sound has been likened to artists such as MGMT, Hot Chip and Radiohead whilst maintaining a unique and personal flavour. Foreign Skin, 8.30pm: Brighton based Foreign Skin, an audio/visual, self styled producer of ambient, chill out, hip-hop and electronic music. Foreign Skin has a very distinctive sound that infuses chopped up and manipulated vocals, accompanied by lush melodic synth lines and beautiful visuals. Momotaro, 10pm: Momotaro are an electronic band based in Brighton. Their sound is eclectic, with dubbed out vocals, memorable melodies, tasty beats and soulful words. Think The XX meets Us Baby Bear Bones. Absolute musical goodness. The music will start at 8.30pm, but they open from 4pm, so there’s plenty of time to go and get all liquored up beforehand. Also, it’s free entry and drink deals galore! O

n the weekend of 14–15 September a Bmusic crew journeyed to a field out in the sticks near Hailsham to discover Over The Moon Festival and culminate an exciting summer of local festival coverage that has included The Great Escape, Meadowlands, Paddle Round The Pier and Shakedown. Over The Moon is in only its second year of existence but formerly went under the indicative title, Out Of The Ordinary, and from what we experienced that mantra is still very much evident at what is both a festival for the open minded, and a place for opening minds. Activities included acrobats, comedy, healing spaces with everything from massage to gong bath therapy, a seminar tent, children’s parades, a bassbooming Reggae tent boasting the first three ended ping-pong table I’ve ever seen and I haven’t even got started on the two and a half days of eclectic music and DJs on offer. Larger names included The Freestylers, The Hackney Colliery Band, AKDK with tons of Brighton based artists such as Transformer, Buffo’s Wake, Wide Eyed Order and 2013 Brighton Music Award nominees, Kitten & The Hip. Quick mention goes to an excellent young rapper we discovered on an open mic stage and is worth checking out: facebook.com/M.PowerHipHop The famously haphazard British weather did its best to progressively dampen proceedings on Sunday but the show went on and Bmusic owe special thanks to Over The Moon for inviting us to host three specially selected festival acts to be filmed on The Castle Stage; the first two being Brighton music scene mainstays; Common Tongues, Jouis, with the last act, Charlie Brown, a talented singer songwriter tipped for big things in 2014. Footage from the sessions will be going up on our Youtube channel exclusively in the near future. Bmusic wants to continue to grow and cover more of our local music scene for broadcast on Latest TV next year, but we need more enthusiastic individuals to help us make that happen. If you think you can contribute please come to an open meeting. Check out our Facebook or Twitter for details. Words: David Elphick

oo much good music this week, so we best get started: Tuesday should see you looking out for Manchester’s all-girl four piece PINS at The Hope, all moody new wave as if “The Shangri-La's have kidnapped Ian Curtis” according to our own Twigwunderkid. If that doesn’t sound like your thing then Small Black’s smooth synth pop will be wooing the crowds at Sticky Mike’s with melancholic nostalgia for a night lost to the memory. Sunrise music to carry you home. Wednesday gives an uncomfortable split between two of the country’s rising duos, Drenge at The Green Door Store and IYES at Prince Albert. Drenge first pricked the ears of the mainstream when making a surprising and unwelcome appearance in MP Tom Watson’s open letter of resignation. Getting recommended by a politician would be the death knell for most bands but this is Drenge and Tom Watson has written for Vice music site Noisey, so we’ll let him off. Brothers Eoin and Rory Loveless, barely out of their teens, spin a reckless, ruthless and yes (groan) loveless whirlwind of blues-focused noise rock that blew Deap Vally off the stage back in March and are fully deserving of the hype that surrounds their angsty, visceral rock ‘n’ roll. This is music born of two brothers with nothing else to do but shout at each other through instruments in the garage, and the world is loving them for it. Physics House Band

IYES, on the other hand, are a more considered affair. Slotting neatly in beside CHVRCHES and HAIM in art pop circles, the producer/vocalist duo make intelligent and infectious anthems out of little more than keyboards and their own voices, but the talent they hold is obvious. Taking a measured approach to reap maximum reward, this is their first headline show with barely a single out but we recommend getting your tickets early if you want a look in. Given that The Albert and Green Door are metres apart, we’ll be going to both. Things quieten down until the weekend when Saturday gives another tough choice of local excellence: Speak Galactic headline Fitzherberts with support from Soft Arrows, whose second album of soft focus fuzz came out last week, while the third Physics House Party is due to pack out Sticky Mike’s. These nights put on by Physics House Band are becoming legendary in their ability to get the best local bands to a share a stage for their highly technical prog wig-out sessions and are well worth a look. Before long they’ll be gone.

★TAURUS {Apr 21–May 21}

It’s not about what you can achieve alone as much as it’s about what you can achieve in partnership. No-man is an island, and you will definitely benefit from the talents of others where one major project is concerned.

★GEMINI {May 22–June 21}

Pay attention to the message of a serious conversation that you have this week. A practical solution can be found via the harsh reality of some home truths. Perseverance is the key to success.

★CANCER {June 22–July 22}

If you’re in the mood to learn a grown up lesson about the limitations of ‘love’, then one particular engagement of the romantic variety could be the teacher you’ve been waiting for. Responsibility and patience aren’t sexy words, but they could present the solution to a well trodden love conundrum.

★LEO {July 23–Aug 22}

Masterful Leo can surely boast to having the loudest roar in the animal kingdom, especially while competitive Mars is in your sign. Sure, you want to make the most of this energy by pursuing your personal projects with vigour, just don’t underestimate the influence of your charm.

★VIRGO {Aug 23–Sep 22}

Serious talks are likely as Mercury and Saturn link up to discuss your current limitations, most of which can be overcome with a practical plan. The future doesn’t just invent itself, yes, you could leave it all to chance, but where your future prospects are concerned – grab the reins.

★LIBRA {Sep 23–Oct 22}

Lackadaisical Libra, today it’s all about action! Fulfillment is not about holding on too tightly to what you have, it’s about planting seeds in the direction of growth while the soil is ripe.

★SCORPIO {Oct 23–Nov 21}

With the illuminating Sun passing through the depths of your psyche, it is possible that some genius from your unconscious can seep out into the world and you can glimpse the elixir. Just don’t underestimate your abilities.

★SAGITTARIUS {Nov 22–Dec 20}

One couldn’t have imagine this current level of emotional engagement to perpetuate. The world is enjoying your transformation, even if you aren’t! While Sagittarius spends a great deal of time flying by the seat of his intellectual pants, the inner dimensions are rightfully being honoured.

★CAPRICORN {Dec 21–Jan 19}

Partnerships take on a new found wealth of sexual engagement as Lilith the dark Moon draws out the hidden sexual depths of that special someone and you. While relationships deepen your imagination can soar leading to a loss of self.

★AQUARIUS {Jan 20–Feb 19}

No-one’s questioning your intellectual capacity, it’s just that there is a lot more to life than the conglomeration of your thoughts, they’re not the whole picture. While striving for perfection, it may serve you well to accept the messier more primal aspects of self, such as emotions.

★PISCES {Feb 20–Mar 20}

You wouldn’t build your house on sand, so don't build your life’s foundation on a slippery set of self beliefs, which are guaranteed to leave you vulnerable when confronted by the harsh realities of life. Confusion is not life’s trick, it’s a choice that we make to avoid engaging in the real world. tuesday 8 Masters Of Sex Channel 4, 9pm Another brand new drama, only released in the US last week, and hotly anticipated – this twentieth century period drama stars Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan as pioneers in the research of human sexuality, inadvertently triggering what later became known as the sexual revolution. Oh, we say!

CSI: NY Channel Five, 9pm You know when you try and steal a thing but the thing turns out not to be the thing you expected and the people chasing you, i.e. the cops, don’t really know what the thing is either? Things get complicated. A fatal car-jacking takes an unexpected turn when the contents of the car turns out not to be drugs. Most bizarre.

Family Guy BBC3, 11pm The usual mixture of dysfunctional family and evil 2D plotting from this animated double bill. The first course dishes up Stewie trying to get Brian to break up with his ladyfriend. She’s pretty but none too smart. Course two and Lois takes over Chris’s school’s sex education classes. Yum.

Atlantis BBC1, 8.30pm Jason and his pals fall foul of King Minos who swiftly robs Jason of his rather fetching shirt as punishment. Actually, that’s not the fate demanded for upsetting the monarch, but it would answer questions. The motley crew are sentenced to become bull leapers. Yes, that means exactly what it says. Ow.

An Idiot Abroad Sky1, 9pm Much to the hyena-laughter of Ricky Gervais, good pal but general mopey grump Karl Pilkington has been packed up and sent off to Egypt to witness one of the Seven Wonders Of The World. He rides a camel, takes a cruise down the Nile and delivers his verdict on the pyramids. Will any of that raise a smile?
