L7 CONTENTS EDITOR’S NOTE ove it or hate it, it’s hard to avoid the plethora of not-sosubtle hints (or even loud requests, if you’re anything like my sister) from family and friends, as the ‘season of giving’ rolls around once more. The can-shop, will-shop amongst you may take delight in writing lists, checking them twice, reminding yourself who’s been naughty and indeed, nice ... but for those of you who may need a gentle nudge in the right direction – we’ve got ideas. Turn to page 20 for a little retail respite. And whilst there’s joy in giving to others, it certainly doesn’t hurt to be on the receiving end, too – and our generous city knows it like no other. There’s so much to look forward to in the way of arts and theatre in the coming weeks; whether you’re a fan of the traditional panto or prefer something more tailored to the, er, highbrow thespian taste, there’s truly
L
something for everyone. Personally, I’m a fan of jumping on board the panto expeditions of friends with children – funny how my baby-sitting offers tend to be most fruitful when the promise of sugary snacks, the echo of ‘oh, no she didn’t!’ and childhood reminiscence lies in wait. Here in the magazine, our stage and entertainment pages will provide ample inspiration for all theatrelovers. And don’t forget to look after yourself amid the hustle and bustle of one of the busiest seasons of the year; Wave World has some useful tips for looking out for Number One, starting on page 16. FORMING A NEW IDENTITY Sussex Downs College hosted a recruitment event for signage, printing and communication firm Identity, where candidates competed, The Apprentice style, with two Project Co-ordinator positions with Identity there for the taking. Seven individuals. One day. Two jobs. It’s a formula we’re familiar with. Identity Holdings Ltd took over Sussex Downs College on Wednesday 5 November to hold an ‘assessment day’. Seven individuals turned out to compete for a position with the coveted Eastbourne company. The Project Co-ordinator positions were advertised through Love Eastbourne Jobs, the National Apprenticeship Service and Job Shop. The shortlisted candidates were then invited to Sussex Downs College to see if they would make the cut. “I wouldn’t call Michael ‘Alan Sugar’, but he’s not far off it,” said Paul Fitzpatrick, Operations Director at Identity, about Managing Director Michael Gitetzen. Assessment exercises included

candidates telling two truths and a lie, with the rest of the group tasked with spotting the mistruth. Maths and English skills and a project management assessment also took place. “We wanted to attract the best people,” said Michael about the event. “We don’t want to hold stuffy interviews.” With the opportunity for worldwide travel working with major global brands, this was an enticing and exciting challenge for the seven hopefuls. The company were responsible for branding Google’s offices, and constructing a

giant Christmas present as a PR stunt for home interiors and fashion giant Cath Kidston in the middle of London. Candidates included Mario Falbo, 28, from Italy, who has been in the UK for two and a half years. “This day has been great to get a general idea of the company,” he comments. “Hearing more about Identity and doing the tasks has made me realise it’s what I really want to do.” By the end of the day, there were fireworks (it was Guy Fawkes Night after all). But most importantly, there were two new Project Co-ordinators at Identity: Luke Ticehurst, 22, from Eastbourne, and Laura Moniz-Barker, 21. Sussex Downs College continues to work with companies through its apprenticeship service, SD Recruit.

Brighton and Hove City Council leader Jason Kitcat on eager young minds Friday was national ‘Takeover Day’, a government scheme to give young people the chance to work with adults for the day and be involved in decision making. Generally work experience can be really useful, but the difference with Takeover Day is that young people get the opportunity to shadow professionals in different fields, and be directly involved in decisions they ordinarily wouldn’t get the chance to. The range of organisations taking part is very impressive – including public sector, private companies and charities. Last year this included schools, councils, MPs of all parties, government departments, the Rugby Football Union, the British Red Cross, Great Ormond Street Hospital, and the V&A Museum in London. This year we hosted a dozen local young people at Brighton and Hove City Council for the day, including Erin who shadowed the Chief Executive Penny Thompson, and Iona (an aspiring journalist) who shadowed me. Between them they got to meet with the Chamber of Commerce, meet key managers from within the council to learn about how we’re doing things more efficiently, catch up with the Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex Mr Peter Field, get involved with our planning for the week ahead and meet the staff who support us to find out more about the work they do. Young people benefitted from the chance to experience the professional workplace and make their voices heard. They can often offer a fresh perspective on the way things are done, as we see from the valuable input of city’s Youth Council representatives on our committees. We need to challenge the sense that our younger generation are excluded from politics and democracy. I hope that through schemes like this, we can help break down barriers between generations and encourage young people to get more involved in their communities.

The Whitehawk After School Project has won praise for the valuable work that takes place while children are playing
he Whitehawk After School Project (WASP) regularly wins praise from parents, professionals and politicians. At one level it’s a play project where dozens of children spend a few hours after school. At another level a small team, funded by a Brighton charity, is providing some targeted, carefully co-ordinated and expert help and support. Some of the 4 to 11-year-old children come along because their school day ends before their parents’ working day. Some have parents who are out of work but who struggle to cope with looking after a lively and energetic youngster. They live in a part of Brighton that has been stigmatised and stereotyped. But it is also an area where deprivation and poverty are above average on a number of measures. WASP’s co-ordinator Garry Allan, 47, said: “We’re trying to give them opportunities their parents didn’t get. The community spirit’s fantastic here. There’s a continuity from school but to the children it feels like play. They’re given healthy food. They’re not allowed to get any food without saying please and thank you. They get positive attention from adults and they’re often not used to it.” The project is based at the City

Academy Whitehawk, formerly Whitehawk Primary School. There are toys and computer games. But the children also burn off energy, running around inside and outside, are encouraged to be creative and guided to think about how they behave. A recent Ofsted report said: “Staff manage children’s behaviour very well. They have clear expectations of children
The staff are highly skilled and very nurturing. For a lot of children it’s a safe place to be and are firm and positive in their guidance. Staff support children in co-operative play and in respecting each other. Staff phrase things positively which helps children to respond well. “Staff work with teachers and parents to make sure that they use the same strategies where possible, which helps children to

learn how to manage their feelings and actions. Parents value the club and comment on how much their children enjoy coming. “Staff work with parents to support the families’ needs, sharing strategies so that children have consistent care. The staff have good partnerships with teachers and the school and liaise closely to meet children’s needs. This is particularly true where children have additional needs, so children benefit from a supportive network.” The project is run by a local charity Impact Initiatives. Chief executive Caroline Ridley said that WASP had worked with 151 different children since January, including at the summer club. She said: “There are a lot of challenging children in different ways. If children are having trouble learning or behaving in lessons, we work on their social skills and their self-esteem. Here it’s not like lessons. It’s play – but with a purpose. For a lot of them the four-week summer scheme is their summer holiday.” Some of the children come from chaotic homes. Their parents may have mental health problems or misuse drink or drugs. The charity and school have both provided positive parenting programmes. These may not be a cure in themselves but they provide more than a sticking plaster. The school’s welfare manager Sally Singh said: “The WASP club is an integral part of the school and we work very closely together. It provides support for children and their families, helping children develop their play skills. The staff are highly skilled and very nurturing. For a lot of children it’s a safe place to be after school. “If we didn’t have WASP here we’d have a massive hole in the services we provide for children and families. It’s a safe, contained environment – particularly in the winter months when we wouldn’t want the children roaming around the streets. And they have positive adult role models.” As so often with a charity-led project, funding is an issue. Children In Need has helped. But it’s a stop-gap. Similarly, with other ad hoc grants. Were the funding to run out – and that is a risk – there are parents who might have to give up work. And dozens of children would go without valuable help and support.

This week’s headlines from across the city Plans for a new Morrisons have hit the rocks
TEXT 999? Police chiefs have said they must make cutbacks if they are to balance the books in the coming years. Sussex Police has unveiled proposals to slash its budget by £55 million over the next five years. Bosses said it will create a new modern police force – operating to a reduced budget and adopting technology. They added they would have to prioritise services to those who need them most. But some concern has been expressed that crimes could be reported via email and even text. GEARING UP FOR 20MPH Brighton and Hove City Council today is expected to give the go-ahead for the next phase of 20mph restrictions. This will see them extended into areas in the north, west and east of the city. While previous years has seen much debate about the issue, this time round politicians seem to keep their powder dry. Perhaps it was because official stats from the council show that the restrictions have reduced accidents by up to 20%. This is despite actual speeds dropping by little more than one mile an hour. In contrast, after thousands had their say, Worthing representatives are set to turn their back on the limits.
plans for the former Aquarena site in Worthing. Roffey Homes, the firm behind the plans, wants to provide more than 130 new properties. But there is concern in the town that the planned 20-plus storey tower will be not in keeping with the quaint seaside feel of the area. Expect plenty more debate as decision time moves nearer. SUPERMARKET HITS ROCKS Plans for a supermarket in Shoreham have hit the rocks. Morrisons was due to open a new store in Brighton Road as part of a wider redevelopment of a harbour side site. But things have not gone to plan and chain bosses have now started to row back. The firm says it is committed to bringing a store to the town but not quite on the same scale. REHOME OUR HENS In a few weeks, 6,000 hens are set to head to the slaughter house. That would be the case without the efforts of Sue Baumgardt, an animal activist from Hove. To help her in a bid to relocate the animals before Christmas,
Latest TV has launched its Rehome Our Hens campaign. To back it, email news@thelatest.tv or call 01273 885750. FUNDRAISING SUCCESS 2 This year’s Children In Need was once again a runaway success. From the workers at Legal and General in Hove who stayed on to man the phones, to young Lilly Armstrong, who joined up with her friends to record a cover of Take That’s Shine – the efforts from all were fantastic. The Latest TV cameras were out and about capturing some of the work – and we weren’t left disappointed. HIV TESTING This week is National HIV Testing Week. It was established by Terrence Higgins Trust and HIV Prevention England in 2012, in a bid to reduce high levels of undiagnosed and late-diagnosed HIV in England. The charity claims that one in five people affected by the disease remain undiagnosed. Which is why the charity is holding free drop-in sessions at its centre in Ship Street every day this week from 8am to 10pm this week. NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM CINECITY, the Brighton Film Festival, kicks off this week. And one event that has caught the eye is a special ‘pop-up’ cinema in Brighton Museum, screening 1960s cutting-edge cinema and cult science fiction on Thursday. For full details and booking visit www.cine-city.co.uk. (UN)DRESS FOR SUCCESS Brighton’s first ever burlesque festival swung into town. And it proved to be a big hit, serving up a mix of daring dancing, tasteful titillation and... cake. Check out our report at www.thelatest.tv.

B
arnstormers comedy club is like an old car I used to own; it chugs along reliably month after month. It’s not flashy, but it gives good mileage. You get three comedians from the London comedy circuit and Kevin Precious hosts the evening with his school teacher austerity. Jeff Boyz came on and told jokes about drunken Scots, followed by Trevor Crook, a battered Aussie, who can deliver a punchline expertly. Headliner was the familiar Jim Tavares, whose absurdist act flowed effortlessly. All for £12 and you don’t have to schlep up to London. No wonder it was sold out.

FOOTIE MAD
Jules Breach has the latest gossip from behind-the-scenes of Latest Sport
H
ello sports friends! It's been the international break from the usual football on the telly, so this week we've seen England in action on a couple of occasions and we saw Rooney get his 100th cap. Due to work commitments, I only managed to watch the first half of the match against Slovenia, and it was absolute mind blowingly ... boring. Typically, as soon as I stopped watching, all the goals started flooding in and England seemingly put on a decent performance in the second half and are now top of our group in the European championship qualifiers. Well done boys! On to the local stuff ... this week on Latest Sport, we featured our usual programmes and we were also filming out on location at The Dripping Pan – home to Ryman Premier club, Lewes FC. The game we went to watch was the Sussex senior cup tie with Brighton and Hove Albion. Brighton played their development squad and a few youngsters, and players such as
Watch Latest Sport on
Shamir Fenelon made an appearance for the side. I was there watching the match and I have to say, Lewes by far were the more dominating team on the night. They had the most of the chances, the most shots on target, and the most set pieces to create a bit of danger with. They just couldn't seem to put any of those chances away and were then left 1–0 down after Brighton converted one of their only shots on target of the match into the back of the net. Fenelon and Wiltshire combined for the goal. Lewes didn't let the one goal deficit drag them down, though. They still looked most threatening going forward and the more likely team to score, and then with the final kick of the 90 minutes, Tom Davis put away a free kick to send the cup tie in to extra time. The goal gave Davis a bit of confidence and in the first few minutes of added time, he scored an absolute worldy to give Lewes the 2–1 lead. And that's where it stayed; Lewes qualify for the next round and in our post on Freeview channel 8,
match interviews, assistant manager Danny Bloor told us how pleased he was with the performance from the lads. He’s hoping to carry on their four match unbeaten run into the league. They did, however, pick up some injuries in the game, so Lewes look to add to their squad and make some changes to their starting 11 going in to their next match. Best of luck to the Rooks and a speedy recover to the injured players! In other Latest Sport news, we seem to have acquired a new member to the team ... well, sort of. In a bid to compete with Kim Kardashian West in ‘breaking the internet’, Joseph's legs have managed to form their own Twitter account, and are gaining followers from all walks of the land. It's a bit of an in-joke, but Joseph tends to get his legs out far more than you'd want from a ginger bloke in his mid-20s. And yes, even in this cold weather we are experiencing now, the shorts are still continuing to make an appearance on a regular occasion. You may have seen them on your TV screens in the last week as a main feature in Natalie's exercise class, that we are now featuring as a regular segment on Latest Sport. This is where the three boys take part in different exercise classes each week and film it for your entertainment value. I’m being told that in the next couple of weeks they’ll be doing a ‘planks and lunges’ class, so no doubt Joseph and Joseph's legs will be out in full force for that one! In the meantime, though, I'm still carrying out my ‘one run a week’ for November, and so far it's 0 in 3, so I'm fighting fit! (Not.) I really need to up my game or I'll end up as the chubby one around the Christmas table this year. Yep, there it is ... the dreaded ‘C’ word. Christmas! It's happening people, and it's happening fast. It's only a few weeks ‘til Christmas now and we will be treating you to lots of special Christmas shows in the coming weeks. um to four young children, Siobhan O’Neill, chose to join sásta two weeks ago. “After having four babies, I am trying to ‘lose the baby weight’. In fairness, our ‘baby’ is now three years old, so I’m not sure how much longer I can get away with calling it baby weight – at this stage, it’s more of a food belly than a post baby one! The sásta programme appealed to me because it incorporates exercise, an eating plan and weekly weigh ins to help you reach your goal. After being weighed, measured and going through a recommended food plan, I got into the ‘pod’ and started to exercise. There is a vacuum inside the pod to create resistance. While it is challenging for just 30 minutes, it is definitely doable because you control the speed and pace. You can start at whatever level suits your fitness, from sauntering, walking or jogging to a sprint!
“Two weeks in, I have lost 5lbs and multiple centimetres from all over my body. Yes, I miss chocolate, and I did have a moment of weakness last weekend where I temporarily lost my willpower to a Curly Wurly – but it was just a blip and I got back on track the next day. This is a great programme for mums (and dads too; my husband is actually doing it with me!) and we give it a big thumbs up.” sásta Brighton guarantees you can drop a clothes size in just four weeks or your money back. t happens every day. You open Facebook and find some forgotten person from long ago. My friend Barry re-discovered Gloria, his high school sweetheart there. They’d both been widowed the year before, and … well, you know the rest. They are now madly in love, spending hot and heavy weekends together reminiscing about that lousy math teacher who drove everyone crazy and the big mistake they made marrying someone else first. I have not been so lucky. The people who re-connect with me on Facebook are all part of a nightmare I prefer to erase. They remind me that they knew me when I wore braces on my teeth and wandered through life with my head in a cloud, my feet encased in orthopedic oxfords. I do not want to relive a time when I was ruled by parents, teachers and consensus. Those days are past. I can only suspect that the ones who contact me are so senile they do not remember anything more than my name. There could be no other reason. I was not the hottest item on the block in days gone by. Nonetheless, I fell in love with the unattainable on a regular basis and went to great lengths to let my targets know I was available. When I look back on all of them now, I realize how desperate I was. Did I really want that short, pimply guy in my history class? And why did my heart flutter at the sight of a boy in uniform? Didn’t I realize that clothes cannot transform a boy into a man? Not long ago, I got a friend request from Donny Okun who fancied me when I was nineteen; still hopeful. He was a sailor then who wore his bell-bottom trousers tight enough that I could see clearly what he had to offer. He sent me bouquets of roses every week for a month and then asked me to go with him to Canada for a night on the town. OMG! I was crossing the border with an honest-to-god sailor, and you know what they say about sailors! I threw caution to the wind and wore my most décolleté dress so he could see my equipment as clearly as I could see his. We got in the car, I lit a cigarette, and tossed the match out the window. However, the window was closed and the flaming match ricocheted into my cleavage. As both of us burrowed into my dress to keep me from bursting into flames, I realized all too clearly that I needed more than a pair of tight trousers to commit. And now, this guy wants us to be friends? I hit delete. It was one of the wisest decisions I have ever made.

A GOOD MOAN Richard Shayler: complaints culture, what’s all the fuss about?
P
eople like to complain. No, scrap that. People LOVE to complain. “My soup was cold; the stuffed peppers weren’t stuffed enough; once I popped, I in fact did want to stop; the tin of beans was not baked enough for my liking; I am unsure as to whether this chocolate bar is actually from Mars. Well, I am not having it! I must tell someone about the physical and mental anguish this insignificant issue has caused me!” So off we trot to write a complaint that some poor sap has to filter through and place in the correct complaints pile. The irony of it all is that this poor sap has himself written a complaint about the number of irrelevant complaints he has to deal with! We never think to compliment or praise, because it’s become a little socially awkward. People get embarrassed. Informing your fellowman what a great job they are doing has almost become a faux pas. But complaining ... now we’re talking!
I was at a restaurant recently and a friend of mine ordered the cannelloni. It was awful. It tasted like soggy autumnal leaves finished with a chewing-gum jus. But, he ate it. He ate every last soggy layer of pasta and every last drop of flavourless sauce. He even hoovered up the bark-like chewy bits! I don’t think I could have done it myself. I got home that evening and started to look up the restaurant’s complaints department on the internet. I began to write my complaint. But, I stopped. I stopped because I thought to myself, who cares? We had a great meal, it was cheap, so what was I expecting? And the staff were all really attentive, caring and funny. I went full circle; I decided to write them a compliment. I didn’t mention anything about the food, but I did let them know what a great night I’d had and how excellent their members of staff were. I also commented on the excellent scented hand wash they had in their bathrooms (it was nice and lemony) and the

ACCEPTABLE IN THE EIGHTIES Guy Lloyd’s bracing himself for a time warp of your seat, until I deliver the second part next week. How exciting is that? The reason for this is that I can’t really complete this column until the weekend. Then I can bring you the gory details. Because this weekend, I’m going to Bognor. As if that wasn’t bad enough, I’m going to Bognor for an ‘eighties weekender’. Let me take you back to the beginning. Earlier this year, my wife and I were at a dinner party

lovely artwork on the walls. I received a very similar email from a Brighton Lights viewer recently who wanted to tell me how much they enjoyed the show. It was great to have some positive feedback, but what really hit home was knowing that people were watching! So, if you have any thoughts on the show please do email me to let me know – richard@thelatest.tv. Good or bad, sock it to me! Or even better, come and be a part of the live audience, 6.30pm every Tuesday night at the Latest Music Bar. I could tell you about all the great guests we’ve got on this week, but I’m worried we’ll receive complaints about how good they are ... you’ll have to watch to find out, Wednesday to Saturday night at 7pm on Freeview Channel 8, Virgin Media Channel 159 or live online at www.thelatest.tv.

(I’m in my forties) and a good friend of ours suggested we all go to an eighties weekender in Bognor. That didn’t quite sell it, so she added that we’d be staying at Butlins. At this point, friends gathered around the dinner table started to shuffle uncomfortably in their chairs. This sounded like hell on earth. However, as the drinks flowed and we discussed the possibilities, the idea started to grow on us. Like a bad case of eczema. Our friend, by this time, practically begging us to join her on this weekend of nostalgia, went on to explain that real eighties bands would be performing. We wanted names. She came back with Five Star, Heaven 17 and The Beat. It’s no Glastonbury (not even in 1983) but we were intrigued. We woke up the next day, hungover, hoping that the whole idea was alcohol fuelled and that the idea would fizzle out. Within a couple of hours I received a text on my phone, ‘are you in, then?’ After much discussion with Mrs. L, we agreed. Many of our friends at the dinner party the previous night just point blank refused; it was down to a hardcore group of seven of us. We paid for the tickets and set up another dinner party to discuss how we were going to hit Bognor for the eighties weekender. We decided we had to hit it hard. A shopping list was made up of mainly alcohol and crisps. Next on the agenda, we had to decide on our fancy dress. We came up with ‘Friday Freestyle Night,’ where we all come individually dressed in someone or something from the eighties, and on the Saturday, it’s ‘Denim Day,’ where the rules are clear. On the Sunday, we’ll want to come back to Brighton 2014. Wish me luck, I’m going in ...

he best laid plans of mice and men eh? You think you are on top of things and then – boom! Everything falls apart, total disarray. If you are like me you will have planned Christmas some months back. It’s a carefully balanced feat of social engineering, especially when your family live so far away. Regular readers will know that my mum lives in Somerset and that she has been unwell. My brother and his family live just outside Hay on Wye in a pretty village by the river. It’s a lovely spot, picturesque – and isolated! That isolation suits them, they love the great outdoors, mountain biking, canoeing and all that ruftytufty sort of stuff. I am happier sat at the bar of Hotel du Vin with a martini or even
PRAYER Bad things come in threes – but how many groups of three can you have?
a snowball (note to self, buy Advocaat). That said, I have spent some lovely Christmas holidays there with my nearest and dearest. This year though, my Christmas has once again been tainted with sadness. A few weeks ago I chatted to my brother, as I usually do, late on a Saturday morning. He was a little under par and complaining that he had a headache. He has suffered for years from migraines. I didn’t stay on the line long as he sounded a bit grim. Later that night my sister in law called to tell me that as the day went by things got worse and that he had suffered a stroke. You can imagine my shock – my baby brother, baby! Less than a year after Mum had a series of strokes, here he was in the same position – at 55! I cried. I cried a lot. A few weeks on and things have improved. He has been allowed home, although he still cannot eat or swallow and has to be fed through a tube known as a ‘peg’, not an easy thing for such a vibrant man to accept.
I now live on hope, hope has to be stronger than prayer At least he is home though, and the slow process of building up his physical and spiritual strength can begin. He is a fighter for sure and I am confident that he will make an amazing comeback, thrashing his collection of guitars and punishing his drums – and our ears. They say that bad things come in threes (who are ‘they’ by the way?) but right now I seem to have passed that three mark ... It’s time for me to see what we can do now over Christmas. I am keen to see him but our plan to meet up in Somerset may now be
too difficult, and I am sure that they will not want the extra pressure of the whole family tipping up, especially if he is still unable to swallow. I really don’t want to put extra pressure on them all right now, by having them try to work things out, either. I am sure they have enough to contend with dealing with things day to day. Mum can do without the worry too, the distress of her youngest having a stroke has already set her back a little. Worrying about a festival celebrating the birth of a man who didn’t live long, but in those few years had such a massive impact on history, she does not need. By impact I am of course referring to wars, so many wars – and for what? I stopped believing in Church many years ago. I still have faith in some of the principals of Christianity, the human elements rather than the spiritual – oh, and I don’t pray. That evening when I took the call, a little of the history section of my brain suggested that I should get down on my knees – but the more recent bits of the same brain said no. If prayer worked then none of this would happen; no war, no sickness, no pain. I now live on hope, hope has to be stronger than prayer. Please!

In 1973, A. F. Nevill & Sons, manufacturers of novelty mirrors for fairground stalls the length and breadth of the country, made a printing error on one of the models from their popular range of licensed reprints of the ‘Love is...’ cartoons by Kim Casali. This was spotted early, so only twenty-seven mirrors were made bearing the legend “Hove is … turning down the radio when she has a headache.” Of these, reputedly only five have survived, placing them amongst Hove-related memorabilia collectors' most coveted items. One recently sold at auction for £18.

BEEN THERE, DONE IT!
Sandra Crathern of Innavision talks health, happiness, and taking control
“
I am 54, and am healthier, happier, fitter and more in control of my life now than ever before! I am in a beautiful, healthy, slim body, in a wonderful marriage (33 years and counting), don’t smoke or drink and take really good care of myself. I pause for a moment to drink in the real essence of what that means. Would that be something you would like to say about yourself? In fact, it was not always like that. My story was of being overweight, smoking, drinking too much and constantly feeling stressed. I woke up and started to juggle a family, job and rocky marriage, and went to bed exhausted only to get up and start the ‘same old, same old’ the very next day. I felt tired and unsupported, and that is the reason I am writing this article, to let people know it doesn’t have to be that way. I believe my true purpose on this planet is to help people to love and respect themselves as I have been helped to love and respect myself (yes, it really is as simple as that). I worked as a registered nurse in a local doctors’ surgery, ironically enough – or more to the point, hypocritically enough! – telling my patients how to manage their lives and giving wonderful advice. The problem was, I talked the talk but never walked the walk. In 1997 I met a wonderful man who transformed my life; he was a Life Coach, and after some sessions I realised I needed to help others do the same as I had. I retrained as an NLP Master Practitioner Life Coach and decided to specialise in Health and Well-being. My company is called Innavision, and I see clients on a one-to-one basis either by Skype, in person or on the phone. I am also blessed to be an ‘International Speaker’ on cruise ships and work at Champneys Health Spa (Forest Mere), giving presentations on how to get a happier, healthier life with this unique tool I have created. So, if you want to see a change in your life, start today ... as tomorrow has a habit of never coming.” Innavision, 07932 618166 / 01903 520369 sandra@innavision.co.uk www.innavision.co.uk

DEAR JACQUIE Your queries about natural health answered by Jacquie Lane for the College of Naturopathic Medicine What should we eat for hair health? The hair needs many nutrients for growth; oil production, scalp health and general condition, so you need to eat a healthy and varied diet of fresh food. The ‘ACE’ trio includes vitamin A, needed for tissue growth and to prevent a dry scalp and dandruff. It also helps produce sebum which is important in lubricating the hair follicles. Vitamin A can be supplied in the diet by eating foods like carrots, sweet potatoes and liver. Vitamin C is a co-factor for collagen formation. Deficiency in vitamin C may cause breakages and
split ends of hair. It’s found in citrus fruits, kiwi, peppers and broccoli. Vitamin E helps our tissue membranes keep intact, and helps supply good levels of oxygen to different parts of the body. Deficiency can result in ineffective absorption of fats from the diet. We can get good levels of vitamin E by eating green leafy vegetables, nuts, grains and vegetable oils. Other important nutrients include zinc, for tissue growth and repair and stimulation of oil production in the scalp. Zinc can be supplied by eating nuts, legumes, oysters, shellfish and whole grains.
HEALTH& BEAUTY The B vitamin group is also very useful. Foods rich in B vitamins are brewers yeast, nuts, seeds, fish, chicken, meat, beans and whole grains. Deficiency in biotin is said to cause loss of hair colour, cradle cap in babies and dandruff in adults. Foods containing it are brewers yeast, nuts and whole grain cereals. Deficiencies in iron and an amino acid called L-lysine are reported to cause hair loss. A diet high in good quality proteins and vegetables may help prevent it. Try foods such as lentils, beans, organic naturally fermented soy, spinach, tuna, lean beef and dark turkey meat. Avoid black tea at meal times, as tannins in it bind to the minerals and impair absorption of iron. Eat vitamin C rich foods with iron rich foods for better absorption of the iron, eg. broccoli or peppers with tuna or red meat. Lifestyle factors can have a negative effect on hair health by compromising absorption of nutrients. Reduce stress, coffee, and alcohol consumption. See your health professional for personal advice. We also hear the couple are planning to renew their vows this side of Christmas. Wishing them all the best for 2015 as they relight their marital fire …
So, a gang of ten ‘stars’ have been put on lockdown in the outback as the annual festival of eejit-ery © (that is, I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here), begins once more. Our top fave celebrity this year is the one and only Vicki Michelle. A RIFFING GOOD YARN
In less than two years, the Worthing/Brighton duo have achieved what most can only dream of, as Jeff Hemmings finds out ...
F
rom nowhere (well, a tiny Brighton venue – Latest Music Bar – in Feb 2013, sandwiched on a bill of five indie-rock hopefuls), to making the BBC Sound Poll 2014, to high up the bill at Reading and elsewhere including support slots with friends Arctic Monkeys at Finsbury Park earlier this year, a Later… with Jools Holland scene stealing performance, a Mercury Music Prize nomination, a number one album, a worldwide tour, and a home coming gig in Brighton, it’s been an incredible journey for the dynamic duo. You could barely make it up. With their tasteful truckers and beards look, bludgeoning riffing and Bonhamesque meets Dave Grohl drumming, the suitably monikered Royal Blood have been a breath of fresh air, an air raid siren amidst the saturated landscape of singer songwriters, electro pop acts, and TVcommecial friendly niceness. An amalgamation of grunge, Black Sabbath, Queens of the Stone Age, and a little bit of Rage Against The Machine, White Stripes/Raconteurs and Muse. Their rise to the top has been almost indecently hateful, and live they have already nailed it; their very simple set up of bass and drums is mainly about power and energy but also about songwriting nous, nuances of sound and some unique guitar slash bass trickery. “It’s all a secret, a secret recipe. Just like the Colonel’s!” says bassist Mike Kerr, in reference to the legendary Kentucky Fried Chicken recipe of Colonel Sanders. Is it a pitch shifter? Or, maybe the clever use of two or more amps for different strings? Perhaps an octave pedal too? Whatever the case, there are gadgets galore next to Kerr's feet. For his part, he has previously admitted that he came up with the sound by accident, whilst learning to play the bass. Whatever the case may be, it's had many scratching their heads, such is the brilliant
effect those four strings have, both on record and on stage where they really go to town: “We just filled a room with four or five amplifiers, all on full and all having a different sound,” says Mike, about the recording process for the album. And all that with just the one ‘bass’ guitar …
Royal Blood have been a breath of fresh air, an air raid siren amidst the saturated landscape of singer songwriters Less of a secret is the Arctic Monkeys factor in helping to get Royal Blood noticed. It all started when the Arctic's drummer, Matt Helders, was seen wearing a Royal Blood tshirt at Glastonbury 2013. “We didn’t know them,” says Mike. “We share the same manager, they came to us before anyone really had heard of us, and they had first dibs on Royal Blood demos. They became our first fans before anyone knew who we were. We didn’t have any merch, we just made him a t-shirt for Glastonbury. So when he wore it (while they headlined the Pyramid Stage) it was a big deal for us and out friends, but no one knew who Royal Blood were. It turned into a story afterwards. It didn’t kick anything off at the time ... a bizarre moment.”
• LATEST 7 23 www.thelatest.co.uk •
The band’s name is also good. So good, you wonder why it hasn’t been used before. “I just made it up, I thought it was a good title for what the band sounded like; to sound grandiose, and English as well,” Mike says. Kerr’s alternating moaning, growling and controlled shouting vocal style provides a neat counterpoint to the general pummelling action. “I guess the people for me that made me feel like I could be a singer are Jack White (White Stripes), Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age) and Kurt Cobain (Nirvana), those kind of singer songwriters.” Those musical influences abound on the album; one minute it’s Jack White, the next it’s Josh Homme. Then Black Sabbath sneaks in here and there, while Nirvana make regular appearances, such as on ‘Come On Over’. Then there are hints of classic British blues rock a la The Groundhogs, and others littered throughout. Despite all these echoes of music past and present, the fact is Royal Blood have mixed it up enough to call their sound their own, helped of course by the unusual line up, and that distinctive bass. “I wanted to have my own signature sound. I see myself neither as a guitarist or bassist, I see myself as a songwriter who can play piano,” says the Worthing/Steyning bred Mike, whose first instrument is in fact the piano. “Singing and playing bass felt the most comfortable way of doing what we do … I could be more myself with that set up.” Mike’s bass/guitar combo is perfectly complemented by Ben Thatcher’s (Former Rustington resident, now Brightonbased) inventive drumming. The two work very well together, and it's this chemistry that has been key in getting it right, live on stage. “We have such good chemistry; we’ve been playing together for so long. I don’t really have to say anything in the rehearsal, we’re always on the same page. “Sometimes the songs start on the bass, then I jump on the piano and write melodies. They are always works in progress. Over time, if I have an idea, I pick up an instrument and when we get together it’s bass and drums, how it’s going to be. It’s hard to write a vocal with just a bass line, so I get a guitar or piano and you’ve got some chords to work with and it helps me get some perspective to see where I am with the song. As for the eponymous album, there’s a strong consistency to the point where there are no duff moments. ‘Careless’ is a typically bruising number, alternating between Black Sabbath style hard rock, while ‘Ten Tonne Skeleton’ is the closest to funk Royal Blood get. ‘You Can Be So Cruel’ is lyrically (not the strongest part of Royal Blood) like much of the album, full of hackneyed stereotypes about failed relationships and people who have done wrong. Still, they serve their purpose in conveying the often visceral outpouring of darkness, interspersed with the occasional bout of romanticism, Kerr’s subtle drawl hinting more of world weariness rather than cold revenge. At the end of the day Kerr and Thatcher are rock fans – Kerr cites fellow grungers/rockers Drenge as a band he likes – and for him it’s an outlet for his dark side; an opportunity to, much like the punters who go to their gigs, let his hair down. They have love on their fingers and lust on their tongues, as Royal Blood have it on ‘Little Monster’, and by golly they sound like they mean it. Sat 20 Dec, Brighton Dome. Sold Out.

ulie Milton is a photographer and poet living and working in the city of Brighton. Like most artists she has her muse, but this muse isn’t a beautiful young waif or a muscular David. Her muse is something much more diverse than that. It’s a city. Our city. Imagine if cities were people, with personalities, and souls, and eyes. But, you might say, they do have personalities; Brighton is a warm-hearted, relaxed earthmother type with a bit of a naughty youth she’s not afraid to remember. And yes, she has a soul, for sure … her people, past and present, the rich mix of open-minded individuals who have collectively sought a place where they can live free(er) of prejudice than in many other parts of the country and world. And eyes … well, that’s a bit more difficult to imagine. Because a city isn’t a person. It doesn’t have a body, does it? But of course it does. What do you call its streets if not a skeleton? What are its people if not its life’s blood? What is its mind if not its libraries and museums? And what are its bowels if not West Street on a Friday night? So what are the eyes of a city? Its police force perhaps, or its highest vantage point? Surely a city’s eyes are its artists, especially the ones who choose such a vast and complex muse and are able to see so much in the smallest things. Like a lover caressing the bits of us that usually go forgotten, Milton uses her camera and often her words to draw our attention to the parts of our city that are often overlooked, or are seen, and then so quickly disappear from the mind’s eye. Beach Hut Doors … we’ve all seen them, but have you really stopped to see them through the salt-encrusted windows of our elegant green promenade shelters? Their vivid colours bringing ice cream and red and white striped Courtesy Julie Milton bathing suits instantly to mind. The sea cure we all learnt about at school. Julie’s charming collections of photographs and poetry bring the micro-aspects of Brighton into soft focus reminding us that these charming vignettes are ours for the taking every time we walk the skeleton of this city.

enior Research Engineer at NASA, Thomas Benson, said: “It’s funny how many guys in my building at NASA started out flying kites or building model airplanes. Future astronauts and aerospace engineers will likely begin their careers as children flying kites. To fly a kite is an excellent way for students to gain a feel for aerodynamic forces.” So with that in mind, at our Primary STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) club we made our own kites and flew them. Along with introducing a bit of trigonometry and Pythagoras theorem in order to determine the altitude of the kite, we also watched some Mary Poppins. And showing true British values, we didn’t let the weather get the better of us, and simply flew the kites indoors instead! Mr May, one of our Physics teachers, videoed the kites from the air using our air drone. I have to say, I was quite impressed with the flying, but then again he has spent eight years previously flying aircraft for the RAF. We also looked at current research in using kites as an alternative source We made our of generating energy. It was great too, own kites and to have Colin Piper, from the Institute of Physics, visit our Primary STEM flew them club, enthusing the next generation of physicists. By bringing the strands of STEM together, these subjects come alive. Even more fun was had in developing our PACA Cosmetic Beauty Range that we will be running as a social enterprise; there’s lots of science involved in cosmetics, technology in the design and production of the packaging, and maths required for running a business. We are also really excited that Ricardo Engineering, one of the foremost Automotive Engineering Consultancies in the world, have kindly offered their services to help Quinty and the team construct the Greenpower car. SENSATIONAL BRIGHTON Why the city has knocked London off the top spot
I
t always grates when people confront me with the idea that there is nowhere decent to dine in Brighton and Hove. I usually respond by counting out my top ten favourite culinary haunts on my fingers and then asking if they need me to remove my shoes and socks and carry on counting on my toes. Brighton and Hove is blessed with more than its fair share of good fare, and in comparison to other cities it is really very impressive. So what is it that makes it so good? Well the answer is simple; the city embraces independent business, from our thriving retail scene to bars and restaurants. We may have all the predictable chains, but it is the independents that make us so special. So much so that this year, Condé Naste Traveller readers voted Brighton and Hove the top travel destination in the UK for great food and drink, knocking London off top spot, and firmly placing the city in the top ten world wide. That is something that our food industry should be duly proud of. In a world where it is pretty tough to make a go of any new business, in a world where VAT is a seriously damaging factor for food businesses trying to offer great quality and value at an affordable price, Brighton and Hove can hold its head high. So where are my favorite places that I believe have really made the city so highly thought of? Let me start with fun and affordable. La Choza sprang onto the scene in a flurry of bright colours and spice. They converted me from indifference to Mexican food to a love of their simple and affordable street dishes and now with two venues they continue to excite. My passion for Indian cuisine was spurred on when Alun and Dawn Sperring opened The Chilli Pickle. Their attention to detail, great regional dishes and stylish and modern approach took the curry out of the dark ages and since then they have gone on to achieve national acclaim. Chef Kanthi Thamma and business partner Euan Spey have added to the city’s Indian scene

with their acclaimed Curry Leaf Cafe, new on the block but already a firm favourite with locals and visitors alike. The atmosphere is relaxed and fun, the menu offers great value, and if you like it hot, they can do hot! There is little doubt that chef Ben and Pamela McKellar’s group of Ginger restaurants and gastro pubs have taken the city’s food profile up several notches and I am a fan of both the Ginger Pig and Ginger Dog where the modern take on traditional dishes hits exactly the right note. Andy McKenzie at Drakes is also a chef of note and his classic cuisine with a modern twist is exemplary, worth going if only to sample one of his superb souffés. Graze in Western Road is superb at pushing boundaries, their tasting menus and excellent wine list are well worth visiting, and they have the prettiest private dining room in town. Terre à Terre is without a doubt one of the most excting kitchens to be found anywhere in the UK, if not Europe, and the fact that it is vegetarian makes it even more special. I love it and have done now for over 20 years. Finally, in this list – not complete – of my favourites, has to be 64 Degrees. It opened

MILLER’S TALE Classic American drama The Crucible on the big screen
W
ith the price of West End theatre tickets as they are, and the added cost of travelling there and back, a drink in the interval perhaps and of course a bit to eat, even if it’s only a sandwich – it can all add up to a scary sum. Three cheers then for the continuing growth of cinema presentations of some of the best theatre, opera, ballet and classical music that is on offer at cinemas. These days you can watch opera digitally streamed from the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, the pick of the Festival from Brighton, top performances form the Royal Ballet and the Royal Opera House and great productions from The National Theatre. They offer an easy and affordable alternative and bring the very best to our doorstep, with productions of the highest quality filmed for cinema to a very exacting standard. Of course a cinema presentation will never have the full atmosphere of attending a live performance but it will certainly go a long wait to satisfying that need to see productions that are often inaccessible for reasons of distance or cost.
on Freeview channel 8, Coming to cinemas this December is Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. Written in the 1950s, Miller’s play about the Salem Witch trials of 1692 and 1693 is a partly finctionalised account of a true story that took place in the Province of Massachusetts Bay. It is also an allegorical work that reflected the extroardinary workings of American Government that became know as McCarthyism. Arthur Miller was questioned by the House of Representatives’ Committee on Un-American Activities in 1956 and convicted of ‘contempt of Congress’ for refusing to identify others present at meetings that he had attended. In 1953 the play won the Tony Award for Best Play, and has since gone on to be regarded as one of the greatest American dramas and is a respected educational text around the world. John Richardson, Producer at The Old Vic has said this of this much acclaimed production; “Yaël Farber’s mesmerising five star production of The Crucible is one of the most

A FRESH TAKE
L
HOME IS WHERE THE ART IS
ast week I spoke about some of CINECITY’s wonderful films and I hope you managed to catch some over the festival’s opening weekend! If not, never fear, there are many more wonderful things to see. This year, CINECITY is spotlighting the significance of new beginnings and cinema’s continual reinvention with innovative debut features and fresh takes on old films. Central to CINECITY 2014 is a film set installation for an imagined screen version of Berg, Brightonian experimental author Ann Quin’s debut novel. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the book’s publication, this free exhibition housed at the University of Brighton is complemented by an array of screenings and talks. Building on the concept of imaginary and obscure cinema, there is a ‘creative dialogue’ – as the festival creators call it – running through the programme. This includes the UK premieres of new live underscores to cinema classics, location pop-ups and Edible Cinema, in which the audience are given numbered boxes with food and drink to be sampled along with a film. An experience for all of the senses! There are two projects based on film history that I am particularly excited to see: On Thursday 27 November, 1961’s Last Year at Marienbad will be screening in Brighton’s Museum and Art Gallery. The film tells the tale of an unnamed man who meets an unnamed woman in a grand hotel and attempts to persuade her that not only have they met before, but were romantically involved. The plot may seem deceptively simple but the twisting cinematic puzzle is one of the most iconic and influential films ever made. It has an Oscar-nominated screenplay by Alain Robbe-Grillet and is fully deserving of your time. However, if you don’t get a chance to see it then you absolutely must catch Francois Truffaut’s 1966 adaptation of Fahrenheit 451 on 28 November. This classic dystopian tale of a society where books are outlawed is screening as part of the BFI’s ‘Sci-Fi: Days of Fear and Wonder’ UK-wide season and is poignantly displayed amongst the empty shelves of the old Brighton Reference Library. It is Truffaut’s only English-language film and stars Oskar Werner as the bookburning fireman who falls in love with Linda (Julie Christie) and slowly discovers his own love of literature. There are also many events that one might describe as being quite ‘out there’: I do tend to find that each year there are a few things that are a little too … experimental for me, and others have said the same. But that is the beauty of this festival; there will always be something for you to dislike and there will always be something for you to love. Don’t be put off by the age of a picture or the style in which it is presented. Take a chance and see what you will discover!

So this week’s column is an unashamed shout-out to some of Arty’s favourite creatives who’ll be showing – and selling – their work over the weekends 29 Nov to 14 Dec. If you haven’t experienced the delight of trailing around the city popping in and out of artists’ houses and studios picking up unique, hand-crafted work, prints and painting, then I urge you: give the Churchill Centre a miss and get walking. At the Dragonfly House, Ditchling Rise, discover the phenomenally talented Chanchala Ariyaratne. She started making Steampunk-inspired jewellery with the remains of old timepieces recovered from her father’s shop after it was caught in the 2004 tsunami, and finds immense reward from turning pieces of history into wearable art. (Her clocks are amazing too!). At ArtForty7, Sutherland Road, another brilliant ‘upcycler’ is Betty Shek, whose one-ofa-kind felt jewellery is created using a freeform embroidery technique and incorporating elements such as vintage buttons. Betty used to travel to Japan frequently for work, and her pieces are influenced by Japanese culture. On Chanctonbury Road, Hove, Salon des Sources promises a one-stop-shop of artistic treasures including prints by rubendagar. Expect to be blown away by the psychedelic, typographic and fantastical imagery influenced by a love of surrealism, comic books and things of beauty. Out of town: There’s always good reason to visit Tarrant Street in Arundel, home to Zimmer Stewart Gallery. Even more so the weekends of 29-30 Nov and 6-7 Dec when Arundel Open Studios will feature ‘14 artists in winter’. Head for number 54 and lose yourself in the alchemy of colour, form and feeling that informs the poetic canvases of Andy Waite. www.artymagazines.com

COMEDY Victoria Nangle
HO HO HO Christmas parties large and small should offer good humour, but do you need to bring your own? t has long been a tradition, when organising an office Christmas party, to choose a location that doesn’t rely too much on colleagues having to make more intimate conversation than they’re used to. You may know in the abstract that Jenny from sales is seeing someone new, but probably, neither of you are comfortable with the idea of comparing her new love’s sweetness to your old love’s hang nails, or to Alex in admin’s idea that it could be the same person she saw at speed dating last Tuesday. What I’m saying is, sometimes it’s good to have a context that takes the pressure off getting to know each other faster than you’re altogether happy with. And this is where the group comedy night comes in. Whether it’s the polish and raucous allinclusive (three-course Christmas dinner, thank you very much) of Krater Christmas Parties at Komedia, or a more austerityconscious ad hoc affair of all piling over to one of the many local act nights with quality headliners you’ll find scattered around town this month, comedy is a very good arena to take your work crew to. Most comedy nights purposely have mixed bills – and by that, I mean
I
a line-up that includes several acts that will appeal to a variety of humours. Read that as the ever so helpful; ‘something for everyone’. Hopefully that’ll entertain fans of both Sarah Millican and Milton Jones. A few ground rules here though. If you’ve just enjoyed one comic immensely and the next one doesn’t tickle you quite as much, please refrain from talking through the second comic’s set loudly. It sounds obvious, but this isn’t like seeing comics on the TV and firstly it’s very rude and distracting when you do this. The comics can hear you too! Secondly, in a live forum the atmosphere can make all the difference and someone talking at the back – even if it’s just a hushed argument about the babysitter – is incredibly Noel Fielding distracting to everyone else trying to enjoy the night. If you’ve got to talk, leave the room and talk. ‘Nuff said. And the other ground rule is to enjoy yourself. It harks back to the atmosphere thing. If you laugh loudly when it’s funny, that’ll give a great vibe to the comedians and they’ll bring the funny on even stronger. If you drink too much, decide that actually you’d like to have a bash at this comedy lark, and actually should have a shot ... go out the back door, find an internet connection and sign up to a stand up comedy class. This is not your time. Next year might be. www.komedia.co.uk www.jill-edwards.co.uk

SHARON VAN ETTEN Are We There is amongst the albums of the year. Jeff Hemmings spoke to its creator
F
rom 2012’s breakthrough album Tramp to this year's Are We There, New Jersey raised Sharon Van Etten is proving herself to be of durability; her intimate, warm and insightful outpourings and her fantastic voice have been slowly but surely winning fans and praise from critics. And while Tramp was in essence a solo record made with guest musicians, Are We There is more a band effort, the music generally slower and expansive, suiting the often harsh lyrics that mainly revolve around a long-term relationship that is coming to an end. You would think that the openness of her lyrics is
reflective of the creator. But, according to Van Etten, it's not so simple. “I’ve always been shy and an introvert,” she says. “It takes a lot of guts … I never thought I would be playing music for people. ‘How the hell did I get here’?” she asks herself. “When I started writing, it was for me. Some of my friends heard my songs and they encouraged me to play, at open mics. There was this interest, like: ‘Oh, my friend cried when I played that. I wonder what that means?’ Even recording didn’t come into it. it’s a weird thing to do – to share – when you think it’s just for you.” Her big moment came when she met Kyp Malone of New York band TV on the Radio … “My friend invited me to a show and he was
opening. I had no idea who he was, I didn’t know his band. But when I looked at him and saw his name, I knew it was the brother of my friend from high school. His brother turned me onto music; Pavement, mix tapes, PJ Harvey, Sonic Youth. I had been away from home for five years and I felt really disconnected from my past, and I reached out to him after the show to try and find myself again, and to let him know how his brother had been a huge influence on me growing up. He had a huge crowd around him and I left to the bar upstairs, but he came up and sat down next to me and asked me about my life,” she laughs. “He said, ‘any time you want to hang out…’ He started recommending me shows in New York, and showed me what was cool. He asked me what I did, and I said I did music. He asked if I had a CD on me and I did. “I didn’t hang out in New York when I was a kid. All I knew was Yankee games, arena concerts, and musicals with my mum. I didn’t know about the music scene, I was pretty naive. He gave me the confidence to move to New York (from her home state of New Jersey) even though I was still having panic attacks. New York was a great place to move to for that,” she laughs. “But I met people on the way that gave me confidence, to make baby steps.” Corn Exchange, Brighton Dome, Thurs 27 Nov, 7pm, £19

here’s a secret sauce available to nary a few game makers these days. The magic ingredient they all need but seldom have control over. That fleeting flimflam that can be here today, gone tomorrow. This is the trouble with ‘hype’ (and how to get into it). The four cardinal sins thou shalt not commit are listed herein:
T
1. Delays An increasingly common casualty among AAA titles, any delay longer than a few weeks from the originally stated release date has a compound effect on the level of hype a game is getting. Not only does it create irritation and disappointment (which, well before anyone has played the thing, is particularly damaging) but it creates a bigger problem. It gets forgotten.
2. Downgrades Ahh, that joyous feeling when technology allied to human perseverance unlocks a new and exhilarating visual experience. Check that resolution! Man, that frame rate! Woah is that ambient-occlusion!? Totally killer anti-aliasing bra! Seriously though, once seen one cannot un-see. These pesky brains of ours build the prettiest pictures based on the most fleeting amount of data. As a game marches towards release we expect, nay, demand, greater improvements to satisfy our presentation cravings. All too often, the reverse is true.
3. Bug Patches OK, all games in the modern era of internet connected machines can and should be patched to fix bugs, that is a given. The real hype killer is the monster day one patch. That Godzilla of a file size that will cripple your internet connection for hours (or in some cases days) before you can even begin to play your expensive and shiny new game.
We expect, nay, demand, greater improvements
4. Log In Woes If experience has taught us anything, it’s not to trust a publisher when they confidently state they have enough servers to cope with demand when connecting to their new online game. An even bigger hype killer than the day one patch, the ‘you can’t log in, please try later’ style message amounts to a horrendous and infuriating c**k-tease.
Conclusion Not all problems are foreseeable or avoidable, however, there are plenty of foreseeable problems that are frequently flirted with by good people who ought to know better. This is 2014, game element is carefully analysed and debated with anal levels of scrutiny by legions of blood-thirsty gamers 24/7. Ready to question, antagonise and interrogate any game that carries ‘the hype’. Disrupt it at your peril… Bored Gamers is an hour-long weekly show on all things gaming. Tune in to see it on Latest TV at 9pm every Friday night.
Sam throws Toff under the bus

N
osie pays Wheeze a visit to console her over the drama with Alik. They do the only thing they can really do in this scenario – blame Binky. Meanwhile, Alik is opening up to Andy and Stevie about the whole thing. These three then do the only thing they can really do in this scenario – blame Binky. Sam is having lunch with Tiff, who I firstly think is Lucy. They are looking a bit similar these days. Too similar. Toff and Jamie enter and Toff makes a few cheeky comments about these two. Tiff is hardfaced. She does not like Toff’s commentary. She is stern. The nation doesn’t like her. Victoria and Mark Francis seem to be reading a giant spell book. If Mark Francis were a book, he’d be the Bible. Victoria would be a lightweight pamphlet. Andy and Lucy talk about Steph and Josh, and how their dating will upset Stevie seeing as he is really good friends with Josh. Even though he only met him last week. Tiff gets all pissy at Toff because Toff talks to Sam about Tiff and Tiff is apparently a private person. WHY ARE YOU ON MiC THEN, TIFFFFFFFFFF?? Stop hating on Toff, yeah? Alik confronts Binky as to why she didn’t immediately spread the gossip that Wheeze might have kissed a guy and then watched Disney films with him the next day. In retort, Binky plants the seed that Wheeze might have consciously kissed said guy the next day, rather than during her blackout the evening before, whilst they were watching Disney films. Drama in the shoe shop: Stevie calls Steph disrespectful for fancying Josh. She then does what she does best and drops the A Bomb (a**hole). She then does a double-whammy and throws in a P Bomb (pr***). Stevie then cries. He cries in a shoe shop. The dinner party that follows is full of disdain. Lots of sourfaced looks. Proudlock is wearing an army print blazer which just does not work. Jamie, who has nothing to lose these days, decides to reference Steph and Josh’s relationship and then tells them off for publicly flirting. Lucy then goes all Betty Boothroyd and chairs an over-the-table discussion about how Josh is clearly selfish. Oh NO! Everyone is nasty to Toff. She doesn’t rise to it, naturally. Lucy does some sort of weird impression of Toff and decides to announce that she has no right to talk about Tiff, because she is younger than her. Tiff sits there, basking in the glory of herself, only to have the smirk wiped off her face when it is announced that Sam has been talking about the time they slept in the same bed but didn’t touch each other. Then Sam throws Toff under the bus. He and Tiff belong together. An elephant then traipses through the room in the form of Alik and Wheeze. Binky and Alik have a row across the table. He then cries. So does Wheeze. They leave the room. Rosie’s eyes look like they’re about to pop out. Outside, Wheeze and Alik clear the air. “I’m the one that should fear losing you,” she says. How very Austen. Next week’s predictions: Steph and Josh will properly start to date, but I have foresight as my friend saw them in Westfield (Stratford) yesterday holding hands. FRIDAY 28 Bored Gamers Latest TV, 9pm Make sure you don’t get stuck playing charades again this Christmas and do your family gaming research the easy way – with hosts Jim Devereaux and Greg Marshall doing the legwork. The guys will be looking at some of the latest games – console, board, whatever – as well as revisiting old favourites. Simple.
Toast Of London Channel 4, 11.05pm Matt Berry continues with his – we have been reliably informed – startlingly accurate sitcom about being a thespian in London. With the passing of Toast’s friend Axel Jacklin, our man finds he’s suddenly in demand for the dramatic roles he’s always wanted. There’s just one hitch – he must become a Freemason.
Bad Education BBC3, 10pm They say a school is a microcosm of society, but maybe Abbey Grove is taking things a bit too far when headmaster Mr Fraser accidentally gives all of the budget away to the Nigerian minister for finance and plunges them all into rather drastic austerity measures. Oh dear. Emmigration threatens.

SUNDAY 30 Strictly Come Dancing BBC1, 7.15pm It may start off as kitsch and a laugh, but everyone is top notch by this point in the competition and wants that trophy just a little bit more than they’re showing. Which is ‘lots’, by the way. Tess and Claudia are joined by Michael Flatley’s Lord Of The Dance troupe, and one couple leave the competition forever.
FilmFest on 8 Latest TV, 9pm With Brighton’s own film festival Cinecity in full flow, as well as the blockbusters about to be released jostling for prime position as the Christmas smash, there’s plenty to be discussed on this week’s round-up of film news and announcements. Jessica Kellgren-Hayes is your guide throughout.
The Day Of The Triffids BBC4, 8pm Another reason to look suspiciously at the weeds growing between the paving stones. This six-part adaptation of John Wyndham’s classic sci-fi sees man-eating plants arrive on Earth, captivate with their beauty and then blind nearly all of mankind. Nifty trick. Bill and Jo try to find sanctuary in London.
