EDITOR’S NOTE
I
’m not usually one for New Year’s resolutions, but I’ve been privy to many in these first few days of 2015 and I’ve noticed a pattern forming – less of this, none of that ... in short, abstinence. Now I don’t know about you, but I never much enjoyed homework. And setting myself the task of avoiding many of my favourite things sounds about as much fun as a 3,000 word essay due by 5pm the next school day: I just don’t want to do it. But of course, I don’t want to be unhealthy, either. So how about a resolution of indulgence, rather than a resolution of abstinence ... but indulgence of a healthy variety? I vow to indulge in as much colourful fruit and veg as possible (did your mum ever tell you to ‘eat a rainbow’, too? Just me then?!), as much physical activity as possible, and as much social fun as I can squeeze into my week.
Hopefully, this healthy indulgence will off-set various hedonistic pursuits that I’m wholly unwilling to give up (leftover mince pies? Don’t mind if I do). And I should be able to stick to it, too. Whether abstinence or indulgence works best for you, we’ve plenty of ideas and suggestions for how to begin the new year with positivity in both body and mind – check out our Wave World health and wellbeing feature, starting on page 13. We’ve also been out and about sampling Brighton’s best remedies for beating the January blues – catch up on our events listings, commentary and reviews from page 16. Let’s chuck ourselves in whole-heartedly; 2015 has a lot to offer. Louise Bevan, Editor Email your comments to editorial@thelatest.co.uk or visit us online at thelatest.co.uk

BARE CHEEK Brian Mitchell and Joseph Nixon’s thoroughly scurrilous Brighton column
PREDICTIONS FOR 2015
Wellington up the road do all the trade during the bicentenary celebrations. House prices go up four grand. JULY All the people living in the containers on New England Road are accidentally shipped to Japan. Work begins again on the wonderful, marvellous i360 tower, but is halted when it is discovered that, once again, they have the wrong blueprints (this time for a large statue of a seabird from the biological family diomedeidae). AUGUST Brighton Pride is largely incident free, as always. House prices go up by another six grand. The binmen go on strike for three weeks and noone notices. Bus fares go up 50p.
Well, ladies and gentlemen, 2014 was a bit of a rum year, wasn't it? But will 2015 prove any better? We gaze into our enormous, pulsating crystal balls to find out. JANUARY The media and shopping industries conspire to create a new day (called ‘Green Wednesday’ or something) in which everyone spends the money they saved by shopping in the sales before Christmas. The entire country goes bankrupt and the internet breaks down. Bus fares and house prices both go up 20%. FEBRUARY After thousands of complaints about the 18 bus service, it is replaced with the brand spanking new 19 bus service, which is almost exactly the same but slightly worse. MARCH Work begins on the fabulous, hugelypopular i360 tower, but is halted when it becomes apparent that the wrong blueprints have been sent, and that they are in fact constructing an enormous pachyderm, white in colour. House prices go up two grand.

APRIL A cosy greasy spoon off Western Road somewhere, with décor that has remained unchanged since the early '80s, and a menu of cheap fried food that is enjoyed by a clientèle of painters and decorators, taxi drivers, OAPs and students, is closed down and replaced by a howlingly trendy eatery that only serves boiled eggs (at £5.50 a pop) or something similarly and hilariously ironic, run by a tattooed, bearded hipster named after a character from Blake's 7. MAY Nine pubs close down, three of which were only opened a month previously. The festival involves the staging of many, hugely-expensive multimedia shows from overseas, all of which are favourably reviewed by the broadsheets and is counted a huge success. It is then discovered that only three actual members of the public actually went to any of these shows, but this is regarded as an unimportant detail.
SEPTEMBER Work starts on the Brighton Open Air Theatre, but, somewhat inauspiciously, is held off by adverse weather conditions including, but not limited to, hail, sleet, freezing fog, hurricanes, typhoons and blizzards. OCTOBER Due to a typo, the Paramount Comedy Festival is headlined by Jimmy Carter. Overnight, the playground at St. Anne's Well Gardens disappears into a sink hole. Nearby playgrounds at Dyke Road Park, St. Nicholas Church and West Pier each agree to take fifty refugees, but Hove Park declines, claiming it is already stretched to capacity. NOVEMBER Following last year's Alex Salmond

controversy, Lewes Bonfire Society attempt to select an utterly uncontentious person to burn in effigy this year. Unfortunately, due to a clerical error, the person chosen is Allah, and a fatwa is issued against the entire town. DECEMBER A compromise is finally struck to preserve the Frank-Matcham-designed interior of the Hippodrome as it is turned back into a Bingo Hall. Work begins, once more, on the i360 tower, but yet again it is abandoned when they discover that this time the blueprints are for a carved round stone, with a hole in the middle, commonly used for grinding grain. Brighton Council try to avoid offending religious sensibilities by sending greetings cards wishing ‘Jo Saturnalia!’ Bus fares go up 20p.

PEOPLE COLLEGE WELCOMES HAIRDRESSING ICON The master class took place in the Kings Restaurant at Sussex Downs College, Eastbourne. Hairdressing students, apprentices and local stylists flocked to see Beverly C, Goldwell Creative Brand Ambassador, transform four models live on stage. Back-combing and hairspray were in abundance as Beverly talked through her style creations to a rapt audience. Beverly, a two-time winner of the British Hairdresser of the Year award, took the models’ manes from average to inspired. The evening was a joint venture between Sussex Downs College and Goldwell, returning to the College after a two-year hiatus. Prior to the presentation, Beverly C spoke to hairdressing students at the College about her career history, inspiring a new generation of stylists. Guests included the team from Fringe Hair Design & Beauty Salon in Little Common. Senior stylist and deputy manager Rebecca Spiers comments: “It was a brilliant evening. My favourite style was the short haircut; it’s the type of style I’d love to recreate. Beverly described how she achieved the cut and colour for the model. I really enjoyed it and I’m inspired to try out the looks.” Hospitality students provided the catering on the evening and flowers were provided by floristry students. On the night, a raffle was held in aid of local charity St. Wilfrid’s Hospice.

The initiative works to put an end to male violence against women. College staff and students signed a pledge to never excuse, or ignore, domestic violence. The aim is to get enough signatures to give Eastbourne White Ribbon status and extend the campaign into other towns and cities, including Brighton. www.whiteribboncampaign.co.uk.

THE VOTE
The year ahead will bring changes to the political scene. But who will win? It’s wide open and anyone’s guess ...
F
or those given to making predictions or placing a bet, 2015 offers opportunities galore locally and nationally. Not only is a general election scheduled for Thursday 7 May but voters will choose the 54 members of Brighton and Hove City Council on the same date. They may also be asked to vote on whether to accept a 5.9 per cent council tax rise at the same time. The indications are that the Conservatives may abstain at the annual budget meeting at the end of February, allowing the Greens to outvote Labour. This would lead to a referendum. The Tories would prefer a council tax freeze but were frustrated last year so may change tack. The ruling Greens say a 5.9 per cent rise is reasonable and necessary. Labour disagrees and wants a 1.9 per cent rise in council tax – just below the threshold for a referendum. Labour held sway last year despite being the smallest of the three parties. One thing looks likely: the turnout for the council elections should comfortably beat the 41 per cent figure in 2011. Turnout is traditionally higher when the local poll coincides with a general election. In 2010 the turnout in Brighton Kemptown was 64 per cent, in Hove 69 per cent and in Brighton Pavilion 70 per cent. The national average was about 65 per
cent – better than recent elections but below the historic average of more than 70 per cent. Turnout could be hampered this time – and the outcome affected – by the introduction of individual voter registration. Forms used to be left for the ‘head of the household’ to fill in. Efforts are being made by the council and others to ensure as many people as possible – young people in particular – make it on to the electoral register by May. There is a belief that students are most likely to vote Green or Labour. So the contest between Britain’s first Green MP Caroline Lucas and her Labour challenger for Brighton Pavilion, Purna Sen, should be close. The Conservative candidate Clarence Mitchell, a former BBC royal editor, may look like the outsider but he’s beavering away and shouldn’t be written off. In Brighton Kemptown the contest is seen as a straight fight between the Conservative MP Simon Kirby and Labour’s Nancy Platts who was pipped by Caroline Lucas in Brighton Pavilion in 2010. Davy Jones is the Green Party’s personable and energetic candidate. He may dilute the Labour vote. Another threat comes from Ian Buchanan, a courteous oldfashioned former Tory, who is
running for UKIP. At first glance he could weaken Mr Kirby’s vote at the Peacehaven end of the constituency. But some suspect he could also pick up votes in Whitehawk and Moulsecoomb which might otherwise have gone to Labour. In Hove the sitting MP Mike Weatherley is standing down. The town’s former police chief Graham Cox is giving up his place on the council to try to hold the seat in the House of Commons. He faces a strong challenge from the young and energetic Labour candidate Peter Kyle. Both are formidable campaigners. As for the council, it is hard to see any party emerging with a majority next May. The Liberal Democrats are focusing on a couple of wards, hoping for a return. And UKIP has a momentum with the potential to cause an upset, even if it is only
former Labour councillor Leigh Farrow holding his Moulsecoomb and Bevendean seat. Anyone hoping for a Green wipeout will almost certainly be disappointed. Labour has been accused of assuming that it can stay quiet and emerge triumphant. This is not the case. Both Labour and the Tories have already begun campaigning in earnest. Newcomers to the electoral fray, like Lee Wares for the Conservatives in Patcham, will enliven the process. Who will come out on top? It’s anyone’s bet. But be grateful to those willing to put themselves forward for the campaign slog – and for most, the disappointment of defeat. Without them, we wouldn’t have a democracy, no matter how imperfect it may sometimes be. Here’s wishing all the candidates and voters a happy new year!

This week’s headlines from across the city PARKING PREMIUM Parking has been at a premium in Brighton and Hove for years. And now it’s been revealed that Brighton and Hove City Council netted a whopping £18 million in parking profits last year. Just days later and the city was named as one of the least car dependant in the UK. So are the two linked? Do we really need to fine the motorist to get them off the road? Check out our report at www.thelatest.tv.
HOME OUR HENS In October we launched a campaign to Home Our Hens. That was after Hove animal rights campaigner Sue Baumgardt revealed she was hoping to save more than 5,000 hens from the slaughter house. The good news is ... it was a resounding success, with more than 5,500 animals now enjoying life elsewhere. Thanks to all who supported us in this campaign.
SHUTTING UP SHOP One of Brighton’s landmark shops has closed after 30 years. Rick Irvine opened Rin-Tin-Tin in North Road as an outlet for his interest in quirky collectables. But after three decades in the trade, Rick has decided to shut up shop for good – blaming changes in people's shopping habits and his age for the decision. The high street has certainly lost one of its characters.

DRINK TO THAT Now, many of you will have had enough of the dreaded ‘d’ word after all the festive celebration. But for those of you still game for a tipple, there's good news – as Brighton has now got its own gin. The spirit has been concocted by a host of city residents, all with plenty of experience of drink. And the feedback so far is that it is a runaway success. FUTURE’S BRIGHT For more than a century it has been a focal point in the community. But decades of history was nearly assigned to the scrap heap as a Brighton church was on the verge of closing. However, a community rallied and St Mary’s in Kemptown is now thriving. Attention has now switched to funding bids to regenerate the church, with hopes high that its bid will be successful in the coming months.
LIFE’S A BEACH The Shoreham Beach boardwalk has had far from an easy existence. It opened in 2011 despite a legal dispute meaning there was a 50 metre gap in the centre. But the hole was filled – and now the recycled walkway is being extended in a £120,000 scheme. With work expected to start soon, it will mean thousands more people will get to enjoy this little corner of tranquillity. NEW YEAR’S HONOURS The brightest and best of Sussex residents have been singled out in the Queen's New Year Honours list.
Among the recipients were former Sussex Stationers boss Michael Chowen, for his charitable work in the city and beyond. Also honoured was Glynn Jones, the former chief executive of Brighton and Hove CIty Council, who was awarded an OBE for services to the community. And Virginia Barnacle was made a BEM for her services to Brighton Sailing Club and the wider community.
TO THE RESCUE Thoughts go out to the volunteers at East Sussex Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service, who were kept on their toes over the festive period. Among the call outs included treating an injured fox in Eastbourne at 2am on Christmas Day. Bats, voles and hedgehogs were also the focus of attention by the teams over the busy period. Founder Trevor Weekes said: “This year has not been busier, but the types of calls have been more severe and time consuming than normal.” He urged people to support by calling 01825 873003 or visiting www.wildlifeambulance.org. FUNDING BOOST Good news for The Martlets, in Wayfield Avenue, Hove. They have been awarded £53,813 by the Cabinet Office to help provide compassionate support to patients and their families. The funding will go towards the Martlets Home Visitors Service which helps people through the process of leaving a hospice to return home – often a time of worry and distress. GET INVOLVED And finally, a big thanks to all of you who have supported Latest TV and the wider Latest family in 2014. STAND UP, STAND OUT Richard Shayler is championing bravery, and a powerful start to 2015 015 is here! It’s only seventy-five years before it’s the year 3000. We’ll all live underwater by then and our great great great grand-daughters are all going to be pretty fine. Well according to Busted they will be … What’s going to happen this year, though? Hopefully all the war and hardship occurring in the Middle East will finally end. Russia will stop behaving like their weather system – cold and hard. North Korea will champion a democratically elected government. Palestine and Israel will both wake up one day and forgive and forget. The entire world will work together to save our incredibly fragile climate, atmosphere and ecosystems. Americans will stop voting republican. China will finally let their people have a voice. And we’ll all spend a lot more time with our friends and families. Too much emphasis has been put on status, money and power. Too many people have become blinded by greed and narcissism. 2015 should be the year of the selfless, not the selfish. The year of the kind and not the killed. The time for change has been and gone. It’s now time for an international solidarity; we should all think of ourselves as members of the world. We should respect and enjoy any other member of our species’ company. Respect them, as we would like to be respected. Be tolerant to their beliefs and hopes, accepting of their fears, accommodating of their dreams. This is the year of the goat. Goats like to be in groups and are honest and intimate. I believe we should all look to the goat and start employing a lot more honesty in our lives, with our friends, families

Are they really in need or is it just a scam? Why should I help him, he’d never do the same for me? I hear these things a lot and it saddens me deeply. It upsets me because I know that these people will pass on this fear to their children, and they will do the same for theirs. We need a generation that embraces this fear and overcomes it. A brave and headstrong group who know their right from wrong. A generation who stand up for themselves and protest at what they don’t believe in. Against tuition fees perhaps and undemocratic governments … Oh hang on, maybe this is the generation we’ve been desperately waiting for? Let’s hope so! Brighton Lights is a show worked on by a team of people without fear or angst. Every week we all work together to ensure the best program comes out at the end. f I had a pound for every time someone in the office has suggested that we run a January feature called “New Year, New You”, I would be able to pay for the sort of radical cosmetic surgery that would make it possible for me to start a new and anonymous life. In the world of magazines, the cliche is wheeled out with alarming regularity in the hope that we will inspire people to take a fresh look at fitness, and businesses to promote fitness too. I have never ever set foot in a gym and I know that some of you will be sniggering now, as that is completely obvious from the ramshackle state that my body is in. Oh I know I should take it seriously, I know that I should exercise and perhaps diet and
NEW YEAR NEW ME?
With my 59th birthday on the horizon, am I really likely to change? drink less and … but am I likely to? I suspect not. I’m not particularly happy with the wreck of a carcass that I inhabit but I am less happy about spending money on gym clothes, gym membership, and having done that parading my decrepit body around a sweaty emporium filled with the buff and the beautiful. Perhaps they are missing a trick, maybe days where only the chubby and crumbly can go – forget Zumba, why not try Crumba! So do I have any plans for the New Year? Well I have some, but if my track record for keeping resolutions is anything to go by they will be short lived. I could plan to go out less – but that isn’t going to happen is it? I mean, what would I write about here? “Tuesday, stayed home and watched Holby City, made dinner, craved biscuits, went to bed in the hope that the craving would abate, got up at two and made toast with jam to soothe sugar crisis ...” It’s just so dull. So no, In 2015 I will be going out!
I should exercise and perhaps diet and drink less and … but am I likely to? I suspect not I could make a commitment to being tidier. I’m not a tidy person, I live in stylish chaos and I love it . I did a bit of serious tidying up a f ew months back and unleashed a tsunami of nostalgia, uncovering boxes of stuff that I could not part with but could not see a reason to keep either. It made me very uneasy, so much so that I simply put a lid on most of it and stored it back from whence it came. So tidy I will not be in 2015. Perhaps I should join some kind of organisation. My best
friend Ms C is urging me to join a choir. Yes, I love to sing, and as well as a fairly serious karaoke habit I also sang and wrote the lyrics for the opening music for my TV show Cook It! – have a listen next time on Channel 8, that’s me shaking those pots and pans over the opening credits. The truth about being in a choir is that it requires two things; a good voice (and in my book the ability to read music) and commitment. I would love to be able to offer that kind of reliable commitment but I simply cannot, too much happens in my life on an ad-hoc basis that I cannot avoid. I would be a terrible choir member, missing rehearsals and probably performances too, as my life takes me far and wide and often at very short notice. So a chorister I will not be. (I’m rather sad about this as I do like a good sing, but for now it will be Lucky Voice and the shower). So New Year, same old me – or will it be? Watch this space, maybe there will be a few changes. I’m not promising anything, just wait and see. In the mean time, happy New Year.

ot only are we more susceptible to germs during the cold winter months, but in January we also have to give our poor bodies a helping hand in struggling to recover from the (possibly very over-indulgent!) Christmas season. As winter envelops, most of us give in to the temptation of comfort eating. When we over-indulge in foods high in carbohydrates, fats or sugars, a few things happen in the digestion process that can leave us feeling lethargic and drowsy. When you eat, your brain signals to your body to slow down and digest the incoming food – the more you put in the harder your digestive system has to work, and the less energy you will have. Effortlessly drifting off to sleep, waking up with the birds and charging through every day full of enthusiasm may seem a thing of the past. But it’s still achievable – if you come across one of these enviable people who achieve this routine on a daily basis, they almost certainly have their diets nailed. What and when you eat can have a significant effect on your energy levels. And you can feel perkier by improving your eating habits with healthy food choices that you can incorporate into your everyday life. If you have to drag yourself through the day, it’s easy to think popping a supplement or chugging an energy drink can help recharge your batteries. But stop right there! All-day energy doesn’t come packed inside a pill or a concoction within a can ... it comes from real food, ready made and packed with nature’s secret stash of natural revitalizers. Start small – take a fresh packed lunch to work, cook a healthy meal with friends or simply make time for a bowl of porridge or wholegrain toast before work, where you didn’t before. And the good news is, there’s no need to ditch the treats altogether, just eat them in moderation! Words: Molly Taylor-Jones

DEAR JACQUIE Your queries about natural health answered by Jacquie Lane for the College of Naturopathic Medicine How can I combat the after-effects of Christmas indulgence, naturally? Since Christmas is the season to relax and enjoy time with family and friends, it’s not surprising that most of us relax our dietary habits and over indulge. However, what we eat and drink over Christmas usually contains a lot of sweet, rich and fatty foods and although they entertain our taste buds regally, they overload our digestive system far beyond its normal capacity. Start your day with a glass of hot water with lemon juice to help cleanse and stimulate the liver. A milk thistle supplement may help to strengthen and detoxify the liver, as well as rejuvenate liver cells. Ginger tea may help with headache and nausea. Drink at least two litres of water a day to flush toxins through your body, and replace tea and coffee with dandelion tea/coffee which is
caffeine free and strengthens liver function while aiding digestion. Kick-start your metabolism first thing with proteins and complex carbohydrates, e.g. poached eggs on wholemeal toast, porridge with crushed seeds and nuts and smoothies made with yoghurt and fruit. The combination of protein and complex carbs stabilises blood sugar levels, giving
HEALTH& BEAUTY sustained energy levels for longer. Get your heart pumping with 45 minutes of aerobic exercise every day – varying your schedule as much as possible. Eat plenty of essential vitamins and nutrients to eliminate antioxidants which put too much stress on your liver. Fill up on fruit and vegetables including kiwi fruit, broccoli and red peppers, as well as nuts and oily fish. Be kind to your kidneys and drink cranberry juice to help get rid of toxins. Also eat foods rich in vitamin B6 such as fish, avocados and bananas, and vitamin C such as citrus fruits, sweet potatoes and broccoli. Vitamin A helps to maintain the health of the skin, and can be found in carrots, sweet potatoes and eggs. Finally, cut alcohol out of your diet for a month while you detox, or at least reduce your intake; avoid sugar and salt where possible and give up caffeine, which is dehydrating and puts strain on your adrenal glands. MY ACCOMPLICE Latest 7 reviews a new Brighton film, My Accomplice, by writer/director Charlie Weaver Rolfe and producer Martyn Holmes, and finds messages of true love delivered with laughs, a stunning Brighton backdrop and a great soundtrack
I
was expecting a nice film about a couple falling in love in Brighton, expecting to see familiar places with a quirky soundtrack. I’d read up and knew this was a low budget movie set in Brighton, written and directed by Charlie Weaver Rolfe, his first feature film and produced by Martyn Holmes. The film cost under £100K to make, and much of it was gifted by the goodwill of the actors and crew, who hopefully if this film is a huge hit, as it deserves to be, will be repaid in full. The experience of going to see the film was very pleasant. Winning tickets to the film by sending tweets about love was sweet, and entering the Duke of York's auditorium amidst a packed crowd was promising. Charlie and Martyn introduced the film by making us laugh and making us all put up our hands and feel positive about living in Brighton (see pic). They have explained that it was a John Said production because John Fitzmaurice, who is in the film, had told Charlie: “The way to proceed, is just to proceed. If you want to do something, you just do something – right? That’s it. That’s life.” I was truly bowled over by the actual film. Just the right length, just the
women and elective mutes”, and this is only the half of it. The woman with the striking red hair just sitting in the Battle of Trafalgar beer garden is memorable, simply because she is there. But mostly there are universal questions about love. How do you tell someone you more-than-like them? How do you know if they love you too? Should you tell them? Or should you keep cool? How about if thoughts of them fill your mind, and spill over into both creative and self-destructive ways? Should you still keep cool, or should you let them in? The pro-active determination of Dimitrina cycling like a woman possessed to find her man is a nice contrast to the hesitant young pair, circling around each other. The backdrop of Brighton is wonderful, both for people who know it well, to anyone watching the film. Seagulls, coloured beach huts, the sparkling sea, friendly pubs, downbeat cafes, pavement dramas, even hassle-filled train replacement journeys give the film a cosiness and recognition that even non-residents can appreciate. And the soundtrack is more than quirky – it’s brilliant! The Russian torch song ‘Ochi Chornya’ (‘Dark Eyes’) by Jo Ema is just one of several live performances in the film by eclectic Brighton bands, from Transformer to Bob Wants His Head Back, which are threaded through the narrative. In short, My Accomplice is a superb Brighton film – and a superb film about love. Let's hope this writer/director, producer and cast stick together and produce more – much more. And that they stay in Brighton to do it. The icing on the cake was coming out of a packed Duke of York's and recognising so many of the cast from the film – it made the real life experience of seeing the film even sweeter. – Angi Mariani ★★★★★
... because it is simple and beautiful
right level and pace of acting, a mix of real actors, and mostly non-actors in the film gave it a huge sense of reality as well as real-life magic. The best thing about the film was you cared about all the characters, from the two leads Alexandra Kalweit (East German Ilse) and Stuart Martin (Frank) to the other love couple, John Fitzmaurice (John) and Dimitrina Elliott (Dimitrina the cafe owner), to the supporting cast superbly played by Kevin Woolley, Angelique Smith and Alan Gilchrist. In explaining the film to friends, I give away the whole plot, because it is simple and beautiful. Two people meet unexpectedly, they fall in love – perhaps? – and in any case they are happy, but also scared. Are they right for each other? When one steps forward, the other retreats, and so on … will they be together at the end? It’s funny in lots of ways. Very visual ways. The dialogue is great, but like love, the dialogue is not everything, and there are lots of non-verbal cues and beauty to keep you transfixed. Including a non-speaking lover who sleeps under the pier – “the one with the fairground on it” – and lights up the fierce looking cafe owner’s face. There are enough side plots to keep your curiosity piqued. Is there such a village as Wivelsfield? Why don’t trains stop there? Where is it? Is there only a chip shop there? Why does Ilse’s co-tenant or landlord get so het up? Why is Dimitrina drawn to John? The synopsis tells us that My Accomplice is about “the personal politics of perestroika in the context of David Hasselhoff” and features “everyday eccentrics that don’t usually make it into films: Bulgarians, adults with learning disabilities, very tall

“My Accomplice is a film about love and what's possible. The production was the same: we didn't always exactly know what we were doing, but we committed, we tried to be honest and open, and we learnt what we needed to along the way. You can still see a few of the bumps when you watch it – but it seems to work. People like it. Now we're just trying to get it out to as wide an audience as possible, recoup the budget, pay everyone who worked on it and get started on the next one – an underdog story about a youth club debating team somewhere near Brighton, only a bit more dismal. Working title: Get Better. If you think you might like to be involved, please get in touch!” – Charlie Weaver Rolfe & Martyn Holmes, John Said Productions My Accomplice will be shown on Latest TV in February – keep an eye on the listings on our TV pages!

SLEEPING BEAUTY Emporium, 11 December 2014 ★★★★★
O
nce again Emporium deliver a Christmas offering that is filled with delight. Not quite pure pantomime, Sleeping Beauty has here been taken on a comedic fairytale ride. By using flashbacks, Beauty herself gets a bit more to do than usual and this is no bad thing. Her parents, the King and Queen, are a well matched comedy double act and their cook Bilberry is the jam in what is a very tasty confection indeed. Emporium again have chosen Doug Devaney to write the script and he certainly knows how to keep an audience of all ages entertained. WIth lines that work on many levels, he seldom stoops to base innuendo and when he does he does so with a lightness of touch. Full marks too for the sparkling fairies from the Drama Queens club, well drilled and very funny too. Gary Blair’s set and costumes are excellent but sadly undersold by rather disappointing lighting, a small quibble that I am sure will be resolved, but after all I was there for the spirit of panto, and the laughs, and these came in spades.

THE INDELICATES
With their annual visits now a firm fixture of the winter calendar, the well-oiled capacity crowd were treated to a celebratory 90 minuteplus set from the Brixton based rabble rousers. They showed why they remain so revered, with old favourites reworked and newer songs from the W.O.M.B.L.E. albums given a boost of sass and soul from female vocalist Aurora Dawn. Their unique blend of techno, country and gospel was as infectious as ever and, with Larry and D Wayne preaching and testifying over Nick Reynolds’ harmonica riffs and some amazing keyboard skills, the show was a righteous and riotous sermon from start to finish. Hallelujah! Concorde 2, 11 December 2014 ★★★★★ Steve Clements
With only four surviving members (the rest had succumbed to manflu apparently), the band played on. Never mind, there was enough musicianship to span many genres. Strong enough melodies were carried by strong enough voices. The diction was clear enough to convey clever lyrics, to miss any of which would be a travesty. It made me unblock my ears and pay attention to everything because there is a strong concept behind each and every song, with enough intelligence to comment on social situations. There is genius at work here, and as they are Lewes-based you have no excuse not to catch them. Upstairs at Three and Ten, 10 December 2014 ★★★★★ Martin Baron

and bold stagecraft. Stephen Mallatratt’s adaptation of Susan Hill’s best selling novel tells the story of a lawyer obsessed with a curse that he believes has been cast over him and his family by the spectre of a ‘woman in black’. He engages a young actor to help him tell his story and exorcise the fear that grips his soul. It begins innocently enough, but as they reach further into his darkest memories, they find themselves caught up in a world of eerie marshes and moaning winds. The borders between make believe and reality begin to blur and the flesh begins to creep. The Woman In Black combines the power and intensity of live theatre with a cinematic quality inspired by the world of film noir. The formula delivers an evening of

BALANCE The Theatre Royal Brighton continues to programme for all tastes t may not be obvious why a theatre the size of Brighton’s historic Theatre Royal offers such a diverse range of entertainments, from one nighters to extended seasons, from ballet, contemporary dance and opera to hit jukebox musicals, from Shakespeare and cutting edge new drama to classic farce and comedy. There is a reason, though, and for all those who poo-poo the very commercial productions that they bring to town, it’s time to get real. The Theatre Royal is a commercial enterprise, dependent upon ticket sales – bums on seats, to be blunt – if it is to survive. For every crowd pleasing musical and West End blockbuster that fills the place for a week, they have the neccessary income to support those less popular shows, shows that many of us really want to see. No crowd pleasers, none of the more interesting but less commercial material. It’s as simple as that and I applaud them for it. 2015 has, as usual, a diverse programme of crowd pleasers and stimulating new works. Rambert Dance Company are back

BRIGHTON’S ARTY
FILM Jessica KellgrenHayes
ANOTHER WIN FOR Alison Krog
THE SEAGULLS
TEASE TACTICS
A
film trailer is a valuable device in marketing a motion picture and has been for just over a hundred years. Indeed, the first film trailer is believed to have been an epilogue following a 1913 Coney Island screening of the cliffhanger serial, The Adventures of Kathlyn, that urged the audience to return for the next instalment to find our whether the heroine would escape her perilous predicament. Originally, all trailers played after a feature – hence the name ‘trailer’. They were initially a collection of crudely spliced film stills that gave a brief sneak peek and were designed to get people back for next week’s show (this was at a time when going to the cinema was a weekly occurrence). Trailers today are a huge industry, one that even has its own awards ceremony; The Golden Trailer Awards. The product today can involve scenes that don't appear in the original film and are intended to flow well themselves, to work as their own mini films. There are big studios and independent production houses churning out these marketing campaign pillars and, like pretty much anything in our media age, hundreds of websites dedicated to critiquing them. As Joseph and I lamented in PostFeature whilst reviewing Nightcrawler a few weeks ago, a trailer can spoil the viewing experience by giving too much away. If the sound of a ‘trailer after the film’ is familiar then you are probably acquainted with the Marvel movie style ‘hidden’ teaser that tends to pop up halfway through the credits and gives viewers something to get really excited about – often it introduces the baddie for the next film or lets us in on the secret that our beloved, but dead, character hasn't quite passed over yet ... Along with these teasers comes a very modern form of trailer: the oh-so-important viral video. These trailers are made for the internet, they are created with the intention that they will be shared through social media, and they are probably part of a series. They favour music over dialogue and story details are considered unimportant as these special, soundtracked “silent” trailers (which range tonally from melancholy or creepy to hyperactive anxiety) pique interest whilst giving absolutely nothing away. Starting this week, and for every week of the new year, PostFeature will be showing you a new trailer every episode! We’ll be getting you excited for what is to come and seeking out all of the important videos that you just can’t afford to miss. Some will be the new stylised montage (although, I will try to keep Joseph to a minimum on that ...) and others will be in the old fashioned “here is part of a story, watch the film to see the ending” format – but I absolutely, 100% promise, NO SPOILERS.

ondering what to write about this week, I was having trouble concentrating because of the incessant squawking coming from the North Laine Resident Seagulls Association. So I give up. They win. I’ve just had a flick through this year’s Brighton’s Artists book, and thought it would be fun to consider how the ubiquitous wretches infiltrate local creative consciousnesses far greater than my own. Jessica Barrah Take ‘But for the Grace…’ by Richard Denne. It’s a bold, graphic expression infused with wry wit, as the artist experiments within the collage tradition. Richard integrates emerging digital print processes, such as photopolymer etching, with traditional processes to create irresistible mixed media artworks. And in four years that we’ve had the delight of knowing him, his irrepressible innovation never fails to surprise and Angela Newman impress. Jessica Barrah’s ‘Gulls! Gulls! Gulls!’ demonstrates the quirky humour and bright but harmonious palette that are the hallmarks of this mainly self-taught artist. It’s from her current Animal Alphabet series of acrylic and mixed media canvases, which is taking Jessica in a new, more naturalistic direction than her previous digitally based work. Interpreting a different medium altogether, how wonderful is the spruce ‘West Pier and Gull’ by Angela Newman? Photographer and artist Angela creates her striking woodblocks by transferring her own images – by hand – onto locally sourced, reclaimed wood of all types, shapes and sizes. Richard Denne Last chance: Head to The Round Georges, Kemptown, to see the work of Brighton-based stencil artist Martin Aniscombe, who creates images of iconic people and bespoke portraits at affordable prices. 20% of all works sold will be donated to The Rockinghorse Foundation.

COMEDY Victoria Nangle
WELCOME IN 2015 Tired out? Stay holed up at home and start planning your highlights for the year ahead
H
appy New Year! Doesn’t that duvet feel rather grand wrapped around you after all of those Christmas parties, New Year’s shindigs and general cavorting of the last month? It’s at this time of year that the chill can creep in and a reticence to leave the immediate space next to the radiator creeps in. I won’t argue with that. What I will suggest, however, is that you take this time to prebook a few choice shows coming up in the year ahead – giving you humorous and funfilled stepping stones to look forward to, and making sure you’ve already got tickets to those must-see beauties. First up, the biggies – check out a couple of shows at the Brighton Centre. That’ll be Michael McIntyre’s three dates in August and then the ever-marvellous Bill Bailey way off in December. It may seem a while away, but just as quickly as 2014 raced through itself, so will 2015 – and with tickets to these extravaganzas to look forward to, January Blues won’t last long at all. Brighton Dome has treats starting sooner though, if you can’t wait, with Ross Noble setting up surreal shop on 31 January and 1 February in the Concert Hall, hotly followed by Josie Long at the Corn Exchange on 19 February, and then further treats from

Stewart Lee on 27– 28 February. The rest of the year is looking pretty good too, with offerings from Jimmy Carr, Dylan Moran, Paul Merton’s Impro Chums, Reginald D Hunter, Alan Carr, Stewart Francis and Kevin Bridges. And then there’s The Old Market and Komedia, not to mention various other smaller gigs with surprisingly big names worth rooting out. Keep your eye out for them throughout the year, but in the spirit of prebooking I’d recommend Simon Munnery and Austentatious at The Old Market, and Lloyd Langford and Richard Herring at Komedia. Give yourself a pick-me-up, a treat to look forward to, and choose one to suit your pocket. You might find that the tenner you got for Christmas from Auntie Maud is just the thing to book up a treat to lift your spirits out of the January doldrums. Tickets go fast, so don’t be the one scrambling around for returns on the day and get organised. What a lovely way to start your year. And it’ll certainly guarantee a brighter 2015. www.brightoncentre.co.uk brightondome.org theoldmarket.com www.komedia.co.uk/brighton

The Godfather of grunge is back in town to blow those January cobwebs away ...
R
olling Stone magazine once ranked Joseph Donald Mascis number 86 in their list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time, while Spin went many times better, ranking him fifth in their 2012 list. Not bad for this out and out grunger, who has barely risen above cult status in the US and over here in the UK. Equally surprising is that he started out as a drummer in the hardcore band Deep Wound, who also featured one Lou Barlow. Those two along with Murph formed Dinosaur Jr, whereupon Mascis took to axe-wielding duties, although he continued to drum here and there including with
Boston doom metal group Upsidedown Cross. Mascis has described their sound as ‘ear-bleeding country’, taking in elements of Black Sabbath, the Replacements and Neil Young, and cross-fertilising that with speed punk and country rock – all performed with banks of amps and at ear-splitting volume, often featuring Mascis’ distinctive nasal drawl and both melodic and coruscating guitar. They made little impact with their debut album, but a subsequent tour with Sonic Youth and the release of You’re Living All Over Me, released on the legendary American indie label SST, propelled them into the public consciousness. And the following
year they cemented their cult status with the single ‘Freak Scene’, followed by a cover of The Cure's ‘Just Like Heaven’. With the impetus given Nirvana’s rise to stardom, they signed to a major label and reached their commercial peak in 1993/94, with a couple of top forty hits in ‘Feel The Pain’ and ‘Start Choppin’. Notoriously, even comically legendary for his monosyllabic drawl, Mascis has been ploughing pretty much the same furrow ever since; a high octane guitar within a generally melodic framework, although he has, perhaps befitting a man approaching 50, decided to concentrate on the acoustic guitar, as can be heard on his Tied To A Star album released earlier this year. However, his sense of the playfully surreal is still there, as can be seen in the video for ‘Every Morning’ in which a fictional religious cult called The Space Children of The Forest mysteriously disappears. Set in 1974 it features the Shins’ James Mercer as a loyal, egg-loving devotee to Mascis, who plays, appropriately enough, a Jesus-like figure … The Haunt, Friday 9 Jan, 7pm, £15

ell, this is it. Like so many before it, 2014 has flashed by, and with it came so many exciting experiences in the world of gaming they would be too numerous to count in this short article. I feel very privileged to have had a unique platform to share my experiences with you via this article, our website and of course, the Bored Gamers TV show over these past four months. If this time has taught me anything it’s that no matter how hard you try, you simply cannot do justice to even half the number of amazing games that come our way each year – even if it’s your full-time job! That’s not to say I haven’t tried, and although it’s unfortunate to have missed out on playing a lot of them, it doesn’t mean that any of the wonderful titles I have barely dipped my toe into are going anywhere anytime soon. Just one year ago, there were far too many doom-sayers circling like sharks around what was perceived as a dying industry. The traditional platforms and types of games were obsolete, we were told, with bite-size one-trick-pony mobile games like Candy Crush Saga and Angry Birds here as the new Super Mario and Call of Duty. Not a bit of it. The industry is positively booming, with record breaking sales on all platforms and devices proving that, contrary to a lot of so-called wisdom, the appeal of gaming is actually broadening ever further; from the casual player flicking birds on their phone while taking the bus home, to the hardcore CoD devotee mercilessly destroying opponents online via their custom gaming rig for eight hours every day – we’re all getting our game on in highly individual ways, and in greater numbers, than ever before. Nowhere has this been more obvious to me than the time I have spent filming at the Latest TV studio every Thursday morning. Whether it’s the wonderful crew behind the scenes who make the program happen, our special guests who have come from all walks of life and even the random people you meet frequently coming in and out of the building on all types of business. They’ve all had games to debate, enthuse with us and have strong opinions about. It makes me feel all the more privileged, and proud, to call myself a gamer. Come and get us 2015, we’re ready to play … Bored Gamers is an hour-long weekly show on all things gaming. Tune in to Latest TV at 9pm every Friday night.
teve Jobs once said in an interview: “I always thought of myself as a humanities person as a kid, but I liked electronics. Then I read something ... about the importance of people who could stand at the intersection of humanities and sciences, and I decided that’s what I wanted to do.” It made him the most successful innovator of our time. Another figure who stood at this intersection was Leonardo da Vinci. An article from the BBC stated: “Leonardo’s true genius was not as an artist or a scientist, but as a combination of the two – an ‘artist-engineer’.” Leonardo’s most famous paintings were Mona Lisa, The Vitruvian Man and The Last Supper. However, Leonardo’s ‘aerial screw’ drawing is credited as being the prototype to the helicopter. Leonardo was also the first to notice the Who would believe that similarity between the way a camera obscura so small a space could worked and the of the human contain the image of all functioning eye. A camera obscura was one of the inventions the universe? that led to the development of the pinhole camera, and photography. In the 16th century, Leonardo gave a clear description in his notebooks of a camera obscura: “When the images of illuminated objects pass through a small round hole into a very dark room … you will see on paper all those objects in their natural shapes and colours. Who would believe that so small a space could contain the image of all the universe?”. It’s wonderful to know that here in Portslade, housed in Foredown Tower, the faculty have their very own camera obscura. PACA Adult Learning are kindly allowing us access to their facilities. This nicely ties in with the astronomy project that we have under way (which includes the local Mile Oak Primary School who are looking at having an observatory built on top of a disused double decker service bus – but more about that next time!).

TUESDAY 6 Six Puppies And Us BBC2, 8pm Remember all of those ads that used to tell us that a puppy’s not just for Christmas? Here’s a brand new documentary that goes that extra step further, following six British households taking on the potentially life-changing responsibility of a puppy. So cute, so destructive, so understandable. Fall in love.
Count Arthur Strong BBC1, 10.35pm The cantankerous pensioner rides again, spreading delusions of grandeur and misanthropy in his wake. Poor son of Strong’s former vaudeville partner, Michael, is still on the scene – and while Michael’s suffering from writer’s block Arthur’s churned out an entire novel. How annoying. But never that simple.

Now they’ve all grown up and in their ninth series. Sam’s fighting with Death and Dean sends out a call for help from the angels. ‘Cause they’re reliable.
