ews, reviews, food and wine; comment, listings, where to dine ... no, I’m not trying to win points for an amateur poetry submission – there’s just a lot going on in this issue. The Theatre Royal Brighton are tireless; how lucky we are to have such a venue on our doorsteps, presenting us with a continual stream of excellent theatre programming by a vast spectrum of talent. This week we’re highlighting Tom Stoppard’s Arcadia. A comment from the playwright himself convinces us that nobody is exempt from a little surprise every now and again: “In January 1962, when I was the author of one and a half unperformed plays, I attended a student production of The Birthday Party at the Victoria Rooms in Bristol. Just before it began, I realised with delight that Harold Pinter was

sitting in front of me.” We hazard a guess that this production of Tom’s own play will be a very pleasant surprise indeed – why not check it out. Our very own Andrew Kay is soon jetting off to pastures ... colder? He’s off to beautiful Canada, filming for Latest TV’s International Chef Exchange, but you can read his colourful column and food review on pages 12 and 15. Jo Brooks is back with celebrity antics on page 13, Victoria Nangle chats to comic Mark Thomas on page 19, and the Brighton Lights team share their weird and wonderful musings on pages 8 and 9. I could go on, but I won’t spoil it. Dig in and discover for yourselves! Louise Bevan, Editor Email your comments to editorial@thelatest.co.uk or visit us online at thelatest.co.uk

sing props hewn from the forest, a French circus troupe put on a fun, and at times daring, show for an enthusiastic crowd of all ages. High quality musical segments and evocative calmer moments provided a welcome sense of structure and pace between entertaining set pieces, including juggling, potato peeling, log jumping, privy interruptions, Cyr wheel, rope and more. The axe throwing was intricately choreographed, the log racing amusing and amiable, the flying old man surreal. The scariest sequence involved two large, very real saws and death defying jumps which will linger long in the memory. A charming, silly, exciting and funny triumph.

FISH – THE ‘MOVEABLE FEAST’ TOUR Fish, effectively the performance wing of D. W. Dick, lyricist and songwriter, is a captivating frontman, punctuating his impassioned vocals with lyrical narrative digressions which often, like the story preceding Great War song cycle ‘High Wood’, touch as much as entertain. But the material presented him by Dick is not what it was, and when the shackles of history were finally thrown off with two songs from his Marillion pomp, he said more in the first few lines than he had in the previous hour-and-three-quarters. The audience, until then warmly appreciative, lit up like so many roman candles. Concorde 2, 16 December 2014 ★★★★★ Pete Langman

STATUS QUO: LIVE IN CONCERT Now in their mid-60s, Status Quo have been rocking for almost 50 years, and they still had them dancing in the aisles. Full of energy, lyrics and beats showing their years of playing together, they whipped up a whirlwind show full of classic tracks, fun toe-tappers, and crowd pleasing anthems, before ending with a bang with ‘Rockin’ All Over The World’. A great show, a fun atmosphere and brilliant performances and showmanship from Rossi, Parfitt and Brown. Enjoyed by fans young and old, new and long-standing, this was an entertaining way to let your hair down and start the Christmas holidays! Piers and Queers celebrates LGBT life in Brighton; WorldSkills at Sussex Downs College TALENTED YOUTH Louis Wilkinson, 20, from Newhaven, has been showing off his flair for brickwork with a festive themed display he built at Chichester College, in December. This was all part of his training (the third stage of eight) for WorldSkills. The talented youngster, who studied brickwork at Sussex Downs College in Eastbourne, has been shortlisted for the WorldSkills team. If successful in his training, Louis will find out in May if he has been selected to represent the whole of the UK in Brickwork at WorldSkills in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Good luck, Louie!

CELEBRATING TWO CENTURIES OF LGBT LIFE IN BRIGHTON Piers and Queers, a walking tour during the national LGBT History Month, follows in the footsteps of some of the historical Brightonians who lived outside the norms of sexuality and gender. Brighton’s current popularity as a gay-friendly city is well known, but Brighton has been attracting people who wanted to ‘escape to the seaside’ for over 200 years. And this included many people who we would now call LGBT. Piers and Queers is titled after Noel Coward’s appraisal of the city: “Ah, dear Brighton – piers, queers and racketeers,” and takes you on a stroll along the seafront and through 200 years of the city’s queer past. On the way, guide Ric Morris visits locations associated with

well known names such as Oscar Wilde, Dusty Springfield and Lord Byron, each of whom had a special relationship with the city. He also visits the theatre where an Edwardian drag king performed, and the site of England’s first Civil Partnerships. The tour also looks at some lesser known but still extraordinary people. One Regency surgeon was the first female-born person to qualify as a doctor, and performed the first successful caesarian in British medicine. But because women were barred from the profession, he passed his whole adult life as a man. Another couple became the first known same-sex couple to marry in Brighton ... way back in 1923! LATEST BRIGHTON & HOVE NEWS

Brighton and Hove City Council leader Jason Kitcat The new year brought the good news that our city’s bid for funding to restore Stanmer Park is a step closer. Stanmer Park is one of the largest public park lands in the city, and has a long and fascinating history. Settlements within the park date back to Saxon times, and much later the 18th century saw Stanmer House built. There is of course also Stanmer village and a score of historic farm buildings at the heart of the park. While it’s a popular destination with residents and visitors, much work is needed to restore the park’s natural landscape and Grade II listed buildings. Conservation of Stanmer Park’s unique natural environment contributed to our area successfully becoming a UN Biosphere last year, and it’s important that we continue to pursue this work. We will now receive a grant of nearly £300,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Big Lottery Fund to develop detailed proposals in partnership with the South Downs National Park, residents, businesses and community groups. If successful, some £4m could be coming our way to put those plans into action. This is the latest in a raft of successful bids to the Heritage Lottery Fund, bringing money to our city. In October we got an HLF grant for the Pavilion and Museums to purchase more items for our public collections, and in June we got a similar ‘first round’ bid to develop proposals to refurbish the Volks Railway on the seafront. And of course the hugely successful restoration of The Level was in large part paid for through external grants. At a time when our funding from government is plummeting, and with soaring demand for other council services like social care, it’s crucial we continue to bring in external money for projects to improve our parks, roads and tourist attractions. Well done to all involved.

THE VOTE

Decisions this week will mean higher rents and £100m spending on housing in Brighton and Hove in the coming year

T

en councillors are due to make a series of crucial decisions about housing in Brighton and Hove tomorrow (Wednesday). Rents will rise by about 2.2 per cent for almost 12,000 council tenants and a budget of £100 million for the coming year will almost certainly be approved. The Brighton and Hove City Council budget for housing – known as the Housing Revenue Account – is ringfenced. It is legally separate from the rest of the council’s income and outgoings. The basic HRA for the financial year starting in April totals £59 million. The capital budget, for projects like new homes or the more costly improvements to existing ones, is more than £41 million. One of the most visible results will be 150 new council homes, mostly flats. They will hardly make a dent in a waiting list that numbers in the thousands. But all four parties on the council – Greens, Conservatives, Labour and UKIP – appear to support the principle of the council building homes again. Perhaps as important, subject to agreement tomorrow, more than 200 homes in sheltered housing blocks will be modernised. The first step involves creating flats from some of the sheltered housing built in the 1960s and 1970s. It’s proving

Watch The Vote on Watch Latest News on

hard to let even though demand is rising. The proposed conversion work should make the empty flats more attractive to prospective tenants, easing pressure on the waiting list. The next steps in the “sheltered housing stock review” will be outlined in a few months’ time. The aim though is to find ways to help people live healthy and independent lives in their own homes for as long as possible. The council owns and manages about 850 sheltered flats and has almost 800 people on the waiting list. A report prepared for the council’s Housing Committee tomorrow said: “The council’s supply of affordable sheltered housing is supplemented by 908

Official projections suggest that there will be almost 3,400 people aged over 90 living in Brighton and Hove just six years from now sheltered flats managed by 14 registered providers (housing associations).” With people living longer, the problem doesn’t look likely to go away. The report also said: “At the time of the 2011 census there were 35,692 people aged 65 and over living in the city, representing 13 per cent of the total

on Freeview channel 8, • LATEST 7 06 www.thelatest.co.uk •

population.” Nearly 6,000 of those people were at least 85 years old and almost 2,300 were older than 90. Official projections suggest that there will be almost 3,400 people aged over 90 living in Brighton and Hove just six years from now. Among the problems in existing sheltered housing schemes is that so many flats have the bed in the lounge. But placing single vulnerable adults with complex needs in sheltered blocks that were meant for pensioners has compounded those problems. The Housing Committee report said: “Negative outcomes include safeguarding risks and increasing isolation, which both have a detrimental impact on the quality of life of residents and (are) also costly to manage.” At the end of last week a council scrutiny panel was due to look into problems affecting tenants in the private rented sector. Campaigners locally have flagged up a number of issues. They include the cost of renting, the quality of rented properties and the way that owners and managing agents have not always responded well when repairs and maintenance are required. Tomorrow the Housing Committee is expected to agree that a consultation should start on licensing more private rented properties. The law requires the council to license larger HMOs – or houses in multiple occupation. In addition it licenses smaller HMOs in the five wards with the most students. The scheme could be extended to seven more wards, including four in Hove. The existing register of licensed HMOs could also be made more widely available by being published on the council website. The Housing Committee will also be asked to agree a crackdown on parking in places like Ingram Crescent, Hove. The move is intended to make life easier for tenants and discourage other drivers from trying to dodge having to pay for parking on the street. Councillors will almost certainly approve – and the tougher approach will make a modest contribution to the council’s coffers too. The meeting tomorrow starts at 4pm at Hove Town Hall and is open to the public.

ANIMALS GET US Lynn Ruth Miller on ‘puppy eyes’ and intuitive natures .R. Gurney created a debutante in his comedy The Cocktail Hour who cries, “No one understands me but my horse”. The line got a big laugh, but it wasn’t a joke. Our horses, dogs and cats catch on to our moods a lot faster than our partners or our relatives do. Mothers, of course, are an exception. One glance from you tells them everything. My own mother insisted she could read my entire day’s activities on my forehead. It turned out that my puppy could do the same thing. A new study confirms that animals gather information and transmit it through their eyes. This can be very unsettling ... especially when sitting down to a holiday meal. There you are digging into your roast turkey and gobbling up your roast potatoes, when you feel a forceful presence watching you lift your fork to your mouth and chew those Brussels sprouts. You look down at Fido, his mouth open and saliva dripping down his fuzzy little chin. He is watching you so intently he doesn’t even blink. You would have to have a heart of iron to ignore the unbridled desire on your puppy’s face. Guilt overwhelms you and you slip him a bit of dark meat, and then a bit more. How can you resist? Fluffy is even more insistent. The minute you put your napkin on your lap, there she is, her whiskers quivering with desire. What can you do? You were the one who rescued her from the shelter. The other guests at the table try to ignore the fact that your cat is sitting ON the holiday table, lapping up your cranberry sauce as if it were catnip. Horses are even more capable of transmitting their needs to you with their unblinking eyes. Last year, I had Christmas dinner in the country and as I dug into my mince pie, I froze. There was Dobbin staring through the window with such intensity that the glass melted. It was no use. I picked up my plate and handed it over. This year, I have decided to fast for the holidays. It is a lot easier on my conscience. “An animal’s eyes have the power To speak a great language.” – Martin Buber

Broccoli in smoothies can mean only one thing ... it’s January! Detoxes, grit lorries and resolutions are the name of the game and by golly, am I playing. consumed? The word ‘detox’ is actually rather misleading. If our bodies were so incapable of dealing with all the toxins we consume, we would all unfortunately be dead. Our bodies are always naturally detoxifying – separating out the good from the bad, and expelling the bad and making use of the good. So what good is a detox? An increase in the amount of greenery, you say? Perhaps we should have more broccoli and cabbage ... well let’s not be too hasty, as both these sneaky veggies have an ever-so-slight proportion of cyanide in them. You know that one, right? A LITTLE RESOLUTION Guy Lloyd on the task of becoming a better man is deadly beyond belief. Well our clever bodies break this sneaky toxin down and expel him. Naturally. Whether we are on a detox or not. The best remedy to ensure our bodies are functioning properly is to exercise more, stop smoking, eat a balanced diet and drink in moderation. This doesn’t mean you need to cut out alcohol or sweet things. It just means you should drink and eat the naughty treats in moderation. Think about the fat and carbohydrate content and eat or drink accordingly. Another great tip is to relax and de-stress ... and one of the best ways to do this is to watch Brighton Lights! H

appy New Year? Well ultimately, it’s up to you isn’t it? I struggle with the whole New Year thing. At some point in history, someone made up time, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years, etc. We went along with this and then at some point, someone decided to mark the end of the year with the biggest hangover. And with the arrival of facebook, we now have everyone sharing their ups and downs from the previous year and their hopes and dreams for the following year.

But really it just continues, doesn’t it? This ‘time’ thing we like to pigeon-hole into categories. Why wait for next year? Why wait for tomorrow? Get on with it now, people. You may be dead tomorrow. This is why I’ve avoided New Year’s resolutions over the last few years. I used to set them and they were nearly always impossible to achieve (give up drinking, marry Lily Allen, etc). I tried a couple of dry Januarys and it was the most miserable time of my life. I find January unbearable at the best of times. Compared to December, it’s quite a comedown. Why would you not allow yourself a drink during the darkest time of the year? Yes, there are health benefits after the indulgence of Christmas, but surely you deserve the odd glass of wine or a beer after work? I know I do. I have re-set my resolutions. But it’s not something I do at the start of a new year. It’s something I try to do every day. A ‘work in progress’, if you like. And that goal is simple; to be a better person – a better father, husband, friend, presenter, footballer, dancer (Dad dancing is creeping in). Try to better myself and become a better man than I was yesterday.

Why wait for tomorrow? Challenge myself, work on my flaws, listen to my wife when she says I’m being unbearable and try to change myself. I mean, that’s all we really have left isn’t it? If you looked at the world as a whole, it’s pretty grim in places and without putting a downer on your 2015 already, I can only see it getting worse. And by that, I mean the things that seem out of our control; poverty, wars, corrupt politicians ... yeah sure we can vote, but how can we really change the world? We change our own. We become better people and that invariably improves and influences the lives of the people around us. If we’re happy, then our friends, family and work colleagues will feel the benefit of that. I’m not doing a Russell Brand here. I’m just asking you to love yourself, strive for selfimprovement and spread the love with the people around you. It’s all we have left. But it’s a very powerful thing. Happy New Year.

Which-erati Are You? You've heard of the literati, the glitterati, and now, so held me, the twitterati (and even, in impolite circles, a similar, disparaging term for feminists beginning with 'c' that is unfit to print. You know the one). But this year the Oxford English Dictionary has announced that it is accepting a dozen such neologisms for different social elites based upon this 'literati' formulation: Bitterati Brita-rati Critterati Ditterati Flitterati Fritterati Gritterati Kwik-Fitterati

Bardsley’s Fish & Chips

I

t’s true, I lead a charmed life – or so you would think. Yes, I do get to eat out a lot and taste fabulous foods and wines. Yes, I get to go to the theatre and see wonderful shows and concerts. Yes, for the past few years my work has taken me abroad to all corners of Europe and now in 2015 I am, as you read this, in Vancouver. Jet setter me! You’re absolutely right. I would never deny that what I do for a living would seem to others like one long, happy holiday. It’s true, it is a privilege to see so much of the world, to taste the culinary delights of other countries and to watch some of the best entertainment on offer. Life could be so much more dull than mine is I am sure. There, I’ve admitted it. Are you all happy now?

OKAY, OKAY I GIVE IN…

I love my life and my work – I am one very lucky man I really hope so, because so many people when they meet me seem to think that my life is a breeze. Fun yes, exotic too. But a breeze? No. Behind every trip is one heck of a lot of work and preparation. Plans have to be made, crew organised and people cajoled into joining in and playing nicely. Thank heavens I work so closely with dedicated pros like Mr M, Ms G de V and the pixies here at Latest Land of course. For every meal out there is the inevitable time sat at the computer digesting that meal and looking for the right way to write it up. For every show the same – finding those right words does not always come easily. I’m sure everyone has heard the term ‘writer’s block’, well for a food writer it is ‘writer’s constipation’ – better not to follow that analogy through though … My new world of TV is a whole lot more complicated. It may seem like a jolly to head off to Sicily or Sweden but below the surface there is a whole lot that needs to be sorted. Once the trip has been planned on paper the second stage of work starts. It’s not just a case of tipping up, pointing a camera and hoping

Getting my head around some of those foreign names is no easy matter for the best. Research takes time, we have to find the right people and places to film, seek permission and create a shooting schedule. When that is all in place I have to prepare. That means several things, starting with wardrobe. Oh I know that I look fabulous at all times, but it doesn’t come easy. Each day of shooting I need at least two clean and pressed outfits, sometimes more. I suspect that Fern Britton has someone to do that for her but for me it’s a long slog at an ironing board pressing shirts and trousers

and then packing them carefully so that I look less than ragged on screen. Then there’s script. Casual as it may appear, I do have to prepare some of what I say in advance, and getting my head around some of those foreign names is no easy matter. So I have my wardrobe, my words – and me. I get on a plane and I get off. On a good trip that first evening will be free time to get acclimatised – not always though, sometimes it’s touch down and get stuck in. From there on it’s a whirlwind of activity. My trusty colleague Mr N clips on a microphone at the breakfast table and from that point on I am being watched and listened to. You have to be very careful what you do and say. Filming takes place all day and sometimes late into the night. In between shots I have paperwork to do, release forms and the like – which I hate but there you go, it’s not all smiles and drinks and tasty bites. I love it of course, but make no mistake it’s a job, and one that I take very seriously.

HAPPY … Well, better late than never – a Christmas review t seems like a lifetime since we all decked our halls with boughs of something or other. Christmas does, after all, come but once a year. Mine was a quiet affair this year, spent with a small group of friends, and none of us fancied the rigours of doing the whole turkey malarkey. I had done it a few weeks before for my TV show Cook It! (I hope you were watching!) and it was rather jolly, perhaps more enjoyable for not being tied to the drama of cooking on Christmas day. Four of us decided to find a place to dine out on Christmas day. In the past, two of us had been to The Restaurant at drakes where we had a simply amazing meal, but this time we had with us one friend’s elderly mother. Not that she has a small appetite, far from it, she is a trencherwoman of the highest order. No, it was simply that her taste in food at 87 is far simpler than the exotic seven or eight courses being offered by many of the better places that were open on Christmas day. I did some research and found that The Bull at Ditchling was doing a Christmas day lunch at a, by comparison, modest £65 a head. I read the menu and it was delightfully simple, ideal for our older companion – so we booked a table for four, well in advance of the day, and relaxed. No shopping, no cooking and no washing up filled my heart with a kind of festive joy that I have only felt once before in the last thirty-odd years. Somehow Christmas lunch has been a cross that I had been given to bear ... ooh, weird religious cross-referencing there. We arrived absolutely on time and were shown to our table, close to a roaring and well attended log fire. The table was beautifully set and our crackers had our names printed on them, a nice touch and useful for the waiter in placing our pre-ordered choices. I didn’t mind a

bit ordering in advance for this very busy meal and it did mean that there would be little food waste. First out was a glass of Ridgeview, our favourite Sussex sparkler made just a mile or so down the road, how delightfully appropriate was that. And with it canapes, all of which were prettily arranged and tasty. It was a very promising start. Next our starters. Three of us had the foie gras terrine, very nice indeed, with toasted brioche and a good chutney. It was generous too considering what was still to come. Ms C chose the goats cheese in a shell of crispy fried crumbs, an unusual choice for her but one that she declared excellent. We were far less adventurous for the main course, not choosing the scallops, which I spotted and looked at with envy. No, for us it was turkey – and very good it was too. The rolled breast was filled with a sweet chestnut stuffing and sliced thick. It came with all of the appropriate trimmings and vegetables and there was a dish of extra vegetables served on the side, not that they were really neccessary. If I had one complaint it would be that the sprouts were the crispy side of al dente and I have to admit that I

like my sprouts a touch softer. It’s a small point and I supect that I was in a minority for thinking this. For dessert two of us went the route of Xmas pud and brandy sauce. I loved it, a sensible portion and nice and rich. Two chose the chocolate mousse with creme de menthe jelly. That looked rather good too, although I am not crazy about that choccy mint combo so loved by others. To drink, more Ridgeview and a bottle of Chilean white made with pedro ximenez grapes, an unusual wine that proved a great balance for the rich turkey. After that coffee and petit four, rather good honey nougat and a small chocolate confection. I tweeted throughout and had a strange reply from someone querying if I was really there. I think my photographs should have been the proof of that. I now look forward to going back to try the kitchen once again. ON THE GRAPEVINE Gravel soil

he Graves region of France is considered the birthplace of Bordeaux wine. Over time, vines planted on the outskirts of the city of Bordeaux expanded south to the river Garonne to form the Graves. The name comes from gravel, the main type of soil in the region. The classified growths or “cru classe” of Graves consist of about 500 hectares under vine, representing about 10 per cent of the vines in the region. Reds dominate over whites in terms of hectares planted, and while the reds are better known, the whites are excellent. A tasting of 1998 Cru Classe de Graves reds in London revealed a vintage just entering an ideal drinking phase. These wines could also be cellared for another three to four decades. Graves was recognised as an official classification only in 1953, despite the fact that some of the estates were founded up to 700 years ago. The most famous of the Graves reds is Chateau Haut-Brion, one of the prestigious five First Growths classified in 1855. Haut-Brion is the only one of the five from the Graves area. Because of its reputation, HautBrion is expensive. The 1998 vintage sells for about £220–£250 per 750ml bottle. The 1998 vintage is 59 per cent merlot and 29 per cent cabernet sauvignon, with the balance cabernet franc. The merlot drives the wine, providing a sense of ripeness and opulence. It has a pristine nose displaying an essence of black olives and black tar pebble minerality, followed by an abundance of black fruits with a slightly savoury touch, plus soft tannins. A feature of Haut-Brion is the consistent line of winemakers from the same family: Georges Delmas was chief winemaker from 1921 until he retired in 1961, when his son Jean-Bernard succeeded him, who in turn was succeeded by his son Jean-Philippe in 2003. Other Graves reds from 1998 are not as expensive as Haut-Brion and represent excellent value for people keen to drink mature Bordeaux.

fter taking pupils to various STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) events, it has become apparent to me that the state sector looks woefully under-represented. The UK government, heavily supported by the EU, are pouring money into STEM related initiatives – which is fantastic – but it is the independent schools that are benefiting from this the most, not the state sector. Now it’s hardly rocket science, but teachers in the state sector are simply stretched to the maximum as it is, and do not have the time to take up these great initiatives. Ofsted no longer A change in mindset Furthermore, include extra-curricular activities as a specific inspection by society is requirement. urgently required I wholeheartedly agree with Sir Rod Aldridge when he said; “Everyone has the right to expect an exciting, engaging and relevant education, regardless of who they are, or where they live.” However, it is not just a question of throwing money at the problem and taking pupils, say, on a trip to the seaside. After having worked with the brilliant Professor Nick von Tunzelmann at the Scientific Policy Research Unit (University of Sussex), I am finally applying some of the research. Yet a change in mindset by society is still urgently required. There is no reason why someone in the independent sector is more capable of doing physics and maths compared to someone in the state sector. I have previously touched upon how science was held back in the past by religion (scientists lost their lives if they dared to go against church doctrine) and also by the rights, or lack thereof, of women (women did not go to university). Yet there is still a mountain to climb regarding ‘poverty of aspiration’ for the disadvantaged. Here at PACA, we had a great time making comets at the recent University of Sussex Astronomy Masterclass – I was so proud of the pupils’ behaviour throughout the day. Now that was rocket science. FRAGMENTS OF TRUTH Rivalry, desire, discovery ... Tom Stoppard’s awardwinning Arcadia comes to the Theatre Royal Brighton heatre Royal Brighton Productions and English Touring Theatre present a new touring production of Tom Stoppard’s undisputed masterpiece, Arcadia, which will open at Theatre Royal Brighton on 30 January 2015 before touring to playhouses around the UK. Directed by Blanche McIntyre, who has at the age of 34 already won a number of coveted awards, this will be the first major UK tour of Arcadia since its original production over 20 years ago. The cast includes Brighton based actress Dakota Blue Richards, well known for her role in The Golden Compass. In 19th century rural Derbyshire, secret desires and professional rivalries take hold of the residents of Sidley Park. The daughter of the house, Thomasina Coverly, is a bright and talented pupil tutored by Byron's friend Septimus Hodge, who makes a startling discovery well ahead of her time. In the present day, academics Hannah Jarvis and Bernard Nightingale attempt to piece together the fragments of truth that tell her story.

Premiered at the National Theatre in 1993, Tom Stoppard’s Arcadia is considered one of the greatest plays of the last century, winning countless awards, COVER STORY including the 1993 Olivier and 1995 Tony Awards for Best Play. This production marks a new collaboration between Theatre Royal Brighton Productions (Dandy Dick, Blue Orange) and English Touring Theatre (Translations, Ghosts, The Misanthrope). Tom Stoppard said: “I’m delighted that a new tour of Arcadia, directed by the young visionary Blanche McIntyre, is to take place. The current challenges for regional theatre in the UK mean that productions of this scale and quality are very rarely toured.” Blanche McIntyre’s recent credits include Accolade (St James’ Theatre and Finborough Theatre), Comedy of Errors (Shakespeare’s Globe), Ciphers (Out of Joint/Bush Theatre), The Seagull (Headlong, Best Director at the UK Theatre Awards 2013), Tonight at 8.30 (English Touring Theatre/Nuffield Theatre Southampton). Blanche describes Arcadia as “one of the finest plays of our era,” perfect for audiences who are “clever, curious and naturally interested in the world around them.” Do not miss your chance to see this landmark piece of theatre when it visits Theatre Royal Brighton, before its UK tour. GROWN UP! A passion for great food, wine and local produce at new Brighton venue, Grow 40

elcome to Brighton's newest cosy corner. Grow 40 is all about local, homegrown produce – we grow or produce goods with our own green fingers, at our own property – we even have our own herb garden on the roof! We water it, weed it and crop it every day. The winter months of course slow us down, but come the spring we will be back at our strongest; being able to offer our own homegrown rocket and herbs will be merely a snapshot of what we can do.

W

We grow and pick our very own herbs and leaves ... you can’t get more local than that! We are situated in the heart of Brighton's vibrant, buzzing North Laine, so that alone has its charm. Diners can enjoy a three course meal or simply come and relax over a glass of wine, a local cheeseboard or our South Coast Charcuterie Board produced by Alan Barttlet; charcuterie that is totally British and very original in both taste and quality. A number of top chefs – who discovered Alan first – are featuring his array of cured produce, and we ourselves are proud to bring him to Brighton to show off the best of his British coppa and lomo. Our aim is to source our ingredients from independent or local suppliers wherever possible and we grow and pick our very own herbs and leaves, when the seasons permit. You can't get more local than that! And here's something for the wine lovers too ... not only do we have over 300 wines on site to taste and enjoy but we also have a sommelier, or wine specialist, on hand. Steve, who is one of the founders of Grow 40, has created a wine club behind the scenes, and is always happy to assist with wine tastings or wine matching, just to add that little bit of ‘vino’ touch to the Grow 40 experience. You can come and enjoy a cosy

Wanting something fun to do with friends? We've got lots going on in 2015! DOUBTING THOMAS Acclaimed comic and activist Mark Thomas returns to his awarding-winning memoir show for his father: Bravo Figaro. He’s also in town with his new show about being targeted by the secret service – Victoria Nangle digs a little ... Hi Mark, how is today treating you? Rushed but good thank you. Mixture of unfinished work and unfinished play. You’ve returned to your show ‘Bravo Figaro’, which I’m very pleased about as I missed it first time around. Having done another show (‘Cuckooed’) since then what made you return to this one? Lots of coincidences. The offer to perform it in New Zealand and Australia made me think about the show again and how much I enjoyed performing it. The chance to perform it in May alongside ‘Cuckooed’ at the BAC in London. But the chance to perform both shows back to back was what sealed it for me. It’s billed as being about your relationship with your dad. Has doing the show made you change your ideas at all as to how you see that relationship? Yes. Doing his show and his death have made me a lot more forgiving. And has it made you any more self-conscious of the relationships that you build with your own kids? Nope. I have and will always continue to be the embarrassment they know and love. Nationally and internationally, we seem to be going to hell in a hand basket lately – with schools being attacked, the siege in the coffee shop in Australia, the almost ‘normalisation’ of war crimes that were released by the CIA etc. Do you see the goodness provoked like #illwalkwithyou as optimistic? We have been going to hell in a basket for a long time, all you have to do is cast your mind back to Dressden or Vietnam or Shatilla or Sharpville. I am always optimistic. Our capacity for kindness is what has made it all bearable.

around and found old friends who were involved in the story, I interviewed them about the show and play some of those interviews in the show. That process has left me closer to those people than ever. Trust is what binds us together, it is the cornerstone of any and every movement for progressive social change. If your kids put on a show to demonstrate their love for you, what do you think they’d consider your secret passions to be – to honour you? Most of my passions are publically known, but taking them walking to look for stone circles and getting lost would be high on the list. Any new year’s resolutions? Spend more time looking for stone circles. I love your merchandise on your website. Is it just me or is all of it pretty much motivated by spreading acts of dissent as far and wild as possible? The merchandise has two purposes, to spread mischief and to pay my researcher her wages. Your latest show, ‘Cuckooed’, tells of the extent of the government’s monitoring of your actions and infiltration into your life. A lot of your shows have a spine of spreading optimism and hope – has this affected your ability to hang on to this, with your trust abused so? Bizarrely, in the telling of this show I have gone

After your 100 Acts Of Minor Dissent, racking them up at such a pace in 2013/14, did you find it difficult to stop cold turkey? Sort of – on one hand it was a relief, on the

Set in the 1980s, The History Boys is a comic drama about adolescent schoolboys – an unruly bunch of bright, funny sixth-formers in pursuit of sex, sport and a place at university; a maverick English teacher at odds with the young and shrewd supply teacher; a headmaster obsessed with results and a history teacher who thinks he’s a fool. Staffroom rivalry and the anarchy of adolescence provoke insistent questions about history and how you teach it, about education and its purpose. ell goodness, we have certainly found ourselves in the middle of a chilly January! Although at time of writing we have yet to see snow, it is assuredly mightily cold in our fair city. Even under the bright lights of the TV studio the cold temperatures prevail. I have come to realise, however, that my chill is not in any way helped by an extreme love for watching Christmas films – as much as seeing snow falling on embracing couples warms the heart, it does nothing for the chill in one’s fingers! And so, I am resolved, let us for the moment only speak of warmer things. Two new films out this week, Wild and American Sniper, involve not only great heat but great performances – the type that command one’s attention. Wild is a tour de force for Reese Witherspoon as she plays Cheryl, an ex-addict undertaking a 1,100 mile solo hike in order to recover from a recent catastrophe. The film was screened as part of the CineCity festival in December and those who managed to catch it spoke incredibly highly of Witherspoon’s performance. The film is based on the memoir Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed, and is brutally honest. It perfectly balances the emotional torment that leads Cheryl to abusing heroin and sleeping around in flashbacks with the emotional salve of extreme physical hardship. American Sniper is also based on a true story: Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle spends a decade saving the lives of American marines in Iraq by taking out any and all possible threats, including women and children. His pinpoint accuracy turns him into a battlefield legend with the highest ever kill rating. Back home, however, he finds that he cannot leave the war behind. Bradley Cooper, recently seen doing some sterling work in, well, almost everything last year, plays Chris Kyle. Sienna Miller, making a surprise return to being allowed to actually act, plays his wife, Taya. The real Chris Kyle was killed in 2013 at a shooting range whilst attempting to help a veteran with severe PTSD, but Cooper’s method acting has been said to be so good that the Navy SEALs who worked with Kyle and trained Cooper said they felt their friend’s presence. Tune in to PostFeature on Latest TV, on Wednesdays at 6.30pm and 8.30pm to see if the film, too, is up to snuff!

e’ve just started designing this year’s book – Brighton’s Artists 2015 – which means three things: Tesco on Queen’s Road needs to up its game restocking the Rioja shelf. No-one in the house of Krog is going to get a decent night’s sleep until March, as all Arty endeavours have to fit around our ‘normal’ jobs, so tend to be nocturnal or weekend. And our neighbours are being treated to the Gypsy Kings playing on the loop – because when you’re subbing layouts and necking red wine at 2am there’s nothing like a Spanish rhythm to keep you going. Ian Hodgson What’s really motivating us, though, is the excitement as each participating artist submits their imagery and we get to see both the evolution of Arty regulars and the new artwork that will feature this year. We’ve worshipped the talent of Ian Hodgson since we first met him. Whether representing the human form or local architecture, his intricate drawings all reference the transformative process of journey. So it’s fascinating to see Val Fawbert that his own path has taken him back to Brighton’s Peace Statue once more. Also taking inspiration from the city – but applying a dramatically different technique – is one of the book’s new entrants for 2015, Val Fawbert. Working with a palette knife and acrylics, Val skims and scrapes to bring energy to the sculptural, kinetic characters that appear to arrive and depart from her compelling, textural canvases.

SERIOUSLY FUNNY? olitics and comedy are odd bedfellows. On the one hand, there is a strong and respected history of satire and plaintalking – from Shakespeare’s fools dressing up the hurtful truths to Ben Elton laying into “Mrs Thatch”, with cartoons in Punch and Private Eye tripping up politicians along the way too. On the other hand, it’s rather odd that the fools are now being invited to the war table and being asked to join those they mock on an equal footing, as seen on Newsnight. Is Russell Brand a revolutionary or a man who has spent many years honing an articulate and charismatic show? That would be a comic, then. It first started working the other way around in recent history when Ronald Reagan became president of the United States in the 1980s. An actor? Being a politician? Can anyone take him seriously? Well, considering how chilly the Cold War got under his beady eye we’d be fools not to. Then we had the same thing again with Arnold Schwarzenegger. And finally in this country when Boris Johnson – editor of comment and satire-filled weekly magazine The Spectator – became Mayor Of London. Coming up, Eddie Izzard has said that he will throw his hat into the ring to be London Mayor next time around and that – for some reason – doesn’t sound odd at all.

Politicians have been trying to earn ‘cool’ kudos with appearances on Have I Got News For You and pop stars at Number Ten for a while now, but some have asked whether it’s the kids with the ‘cool’ parents that really benefit, or if boundaries really are a good thing. Who else misses being able to rail against authority that stuck by its unpopular guns, alongside Spitting Image puppets and punk comics that hit each other over the head with saucepans? It’s not all left-wing voices calling from the stand-up stage pulpit either. In recent months Andrew Lawrence caused quite an stirring amongst the comedy community when he voiced his criticisms of “moronic, liberal back-slapping on panel shows” on Facebook. And he claims he’s not a political comedian. And he’s not. The only way to keep satire separate is to allow off-stage its own arena in these enlightened days of social media. There is no ‘private opinion’ any more. So perhaps you should just judge the comedians on their jokes and the politicians on their actions. Now there’s a revolutionary idea. The Buffalo Stance lady is back in town

B

ursting onto the scene with her performance of ‘Buffalo Stance’ on Top of the Pops in 1988 whilst pregnant, and then returning to the charts with her her best known song ‘Manchild’, baby in tow, Neneh Cherry has before and since paddled her own canoe, interspersing the odd solo album (only four in total) with countless collaborations that span rap, reggae, jazz and punk. Born in Sweden to a Swedish painter and textile artist, and a Sierra Leone drummer, her mother then married Don Cherry, an American jazz musician, who helped to bring her up as well as introducing her to his family, who include

musician Eagle-Eye Cherry. “The way they were with their creativity, their art … the music, and their idea of how they want to live, was all very much connected. They had an idea that they wanted to create together, with other people. So our house was an ‘open house’. A lot of people visited, a lot of musicians came. That upbringing has definitely filtered through into who I am and the way I live”, Cherry has said about her upbringing. After moving to New York in the early ‘70s, she left school at age 14 and eventually went to London, where she quickly identified with the likes of Poly Styrene of X-Ray Spex. “One day I was singing along to their records, Germfree Adolescents or Oh Bondage Up

Yours!, but I found my voice. And I'll never forget it happening.” She also met The Slits whilst touring with her dad, eventually performing with them, but also New Age Steppers and left field jazz-punkers Rip, Rig & Panic, as well as DJing, playing early rap music on a pirate radio station. Massive Attack's Robert Del Naja and Andrew Vowles (aka Mushroom) both contributed to Raw Like Sushi, and the subsequent success of that album and her long-standing involvement with the Bristol scene enabled her to help Massive Attack, financially and artistically, via helping to arrange some of the music on their debut album Blue Lines. Her most recent album, Blank Project, is only her fourth since 1988. “I’ve always been doing stuff, being creative. But I got to the point where I starting to feel this longing, craving, itchy feeling – which was the first sign that it was time. I’ve made a few attempts to make other solo records, but when I’ve looked back at the body of work I’ve always felt like I was never quite there. But now I feel like I’m inside these songs – they embody the place that I’m living in right now.” Prince Albert, 24 & 25 January, 8pm, £12.50
