EDITOR’S NOTE
I
remember the heady days of my youth (well I should hope so – they didn’t occur that long ago, after all) and the inception of a game the summer that many of us learned to drive – ‘Drive-by Present Drop’. You guessed it – the simple premise was to drive around and pick up a friend, collect / buy / borrow an item of some hilarity (to our adolescent minds) and drop it off on the doorstep of a nominated recipient. I clearly remember the mornings I opened my front door to discover a single boot, carton of eggs or bottle of ‘Matey’ bubble bath sitting absurdly on the doorstep, or a garden gnome or gaudy plastic flamingo planted in the middle of the front garden. Wild! You’re thinking. Reckless youth ... (disclaimer: we got cooler as we got older, I promise you *). It’s often the minutiae, the little things, that leave a lasting impression. This week, Latest’s
Victoria Nangle talks to Ross Noble about collecting joke fodder for his shows from the wonderful gifts his audience leave for him on stage, between sets. Not quite up there with ‘Drive-by Present Drop’, I’m sure you’ll agree, but still a wonderful source of hilarity and inspiration. We’ve also got news and chat from the Latest TV news team, and Richard and Guy from Brighton Lights. Andrew Kay’s developed a sudden fear of longdistance travel – how will that bode for his trip to Canada?! Plus reviews, opinion and commentary, and a bumper DVD giveaway on our competitions page. Talking of giveaways, one of these days it’ll be time to renew my driving licence ... Louise Bevan, Editor * To be honest, that’s up for debate. PEOPLE AN EXCEPTIONAL START TO THE YEAR FOR ONE SUSSEX LADY Thanks to Brighton Marina and Chandlers Mini Brighton, local lady Angela Nunn had a fantastic extra (and unexpected) Christmas present – a brand new Mini. 365 days ago, Brighton Marina launched their 2014 Gold Card which, as well as offering cardholders over 40 money saving offers at the Marina, gave them a chance to win a brand new Mini by automatically entering them into a free draw. Over 20,000 people in and around Sussex were eligible, but there could only be one winner. Jack the Lad, from Heart Sussex, revealed the lucky winner on air on Monday 21 December. Angela, however, wasn’t aware of this – it took the team at the Marina a couple of weeks to track her down! Kirsty Pollard, Marketing Manager from Brighton Marina, said: “Once we located Angela we went to her house to deliver the news. At first she thought it was a wind up from one her friends or a spoof TV company, but once the penny dropped she couldn’t have been more excited. In fact she was so excited that she was unable to drive to her father’s 92nd birthday and had to order a cab!” The 2015 Gold card has been launched and again, anyone who signs up will automatically enter the draw to win a Mini worth over £15,000. CELEBRATION TIME FOR THE PRINCE’S TRUST The 11th Prince’s Trust Team finished their last Programme on a high note, with a presentation evening at the Elim Family Centre last month. The team of young adults, aged 16-25, bonded during the 12week Prince’s Trust Team Programme, run in association with Sussex Downs College. Over 12 weeks, the group participated in team building exercises, hosted charity events and improved their job prospects by role-playing interview scenarios and working on their CVs. The end of the Programme was celebrated with an awards presentation evening in December, attended by the Right Worshipful Mayor of Eastbourne, Councillor Janet Coles, and the Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex, Peter Field. 'STAMP 'N WIN!' COMPETITION WINNERS REVEALED The winners of Hove Business Association's 'Stamp'n WIN!' Christmas shopping trail competition have been drawn. The first prize on offer was £500 cash, and 19 other prizes had been donated by local businesses (a full list of the prizes can be found on the HBA website: www.hovebiz.com). The prize draw took place on the evening of Thursday 8 January on the top deck of a local double-decker bus, which was kindly provided by Martin Harris, MD of the Brighton & Hove Bus Company. The bus toured the trail route before arriving at the home of the winner in Hove, where Jill Humphrey, Chair of Hove Business Association, presented the main cash prize. Sam McNeil picked up her shopping trail map on one of the local buses and entered our competition after encouragement from her young daughter, who was excited about collecting the different stamps on the trail ... Sam will be sharing the spoils with her. Hove Business Association introduced the 'Stamp'n WIN!' initiative to encourage Christmas shoppers to explore the independent retail outlets of Hove and Portslade. Jill Humphrey, Chair of Hove Business Association, commented: “This year we received an excellent response to the 'Stamp'n WIN!' competition, and we're delighted that participants came from across the region to visit Hove and Portslade for their Christmas shopping. Congratulations to Sam on winning first prize, we hope that you enjoy spending it with your daughter. I'd like to thank the retailers who participated in the initiative, many of whom generously donated prizes for our winners. After the success of the 2014 trail, we look forward to organising this Christmas competition later in the year.”

Brighton and Hove City Council leader Jason Kitcat Trust is key to the services and technology that so many of us use. We wouldn’t use online shopping if we knew our bank details weren’t being kept safe. Nor would we send personal emails or texts if we knew that hackers could easily access them. Unfortunately last week, David Cameron announced that he effectively plans to end our privacy. Companies with access to our sensitive data usually encrypt our information to protect it from prying eyes. This includes smartphone apps, banking, messaging and some email providers. Sometimes this is so secure that even the companies themselves cannot access the information we send. However David Cameron has announced that he plans to make it illegal for companies to keep our information private from the government. This is a huge invasion of privacy, plus there’s no guarantee that spying on UK citizens will improve our national security. More importantly, leaving the back door open for the government also leaves it open for more unsavoury characters. Weakened security around these services gifts hackers and fraudsters the golden opportunity to steal personal information, and more, from us. Businesses and technology experts are warning that it could spell the end of online shopping, privacy and security. Some businesses are already making plans to leave the UK if David Cameron pushes ahead. This is of huge importance to Brighton & Hove because of our burgeoning digital sector. If David Cameron makes it impossible for ordinary companies to do business online, or digital companies to develop new technology that customers can trust, it will crush our local tech economy. The digital sector alone is worth £713 million per year to the city. We are a world leader in the field, and we want it to stay that way – Cameron needs to back off and respect our privacy.

The next steps in saving the seafront from collapse are likely to be agreed by councillors in a couple of days’ time
T
he next steps along the road to reviving Brighton seafront will be taken in a few days’ time. Council officials are likely to be asked to prepare two crucial reports. The second report, due in September, will tackle the key question – how will it be funded? Ideas have begun to emerge. Brighton and Hove City Council bosses are in talks to try to work out ways to find the estimated £100 million needed to carry out a major overhaul. They are also looking at how to ensure that the restored arches and the seafront generally can be made to pay their way. The hole in the road that appeared at the bottom of West Street last April highlighted how urgent the task had become. The reality is that the ageing seafront arches are far from being a fancy old architectural feature. They play a crucial part in supporting the main road above – the A259 – and are reaching the end of their working life. A report being presented to the council’s Policy and Resources Committee on Thursday has been published. It said: “The seafront plays a major part in the tourism offer of the city and therefore
contributes significantly to the visitor economy of the city, which is valued at £800 million per year and supports 20,000 jobs. It is essential that the seafront is well maintained and managed to not only reduce the health and safety risks but also as a very attractive place to visit.”
The reality is that the ageing seafront arches are far from being a fancy old architectural feature Work was already under way to restore and revive some of the rundown arches. The aim had been to carry out the work as construction started on the i360. The reopened arches are now let to businesses paying rent and rates. Then the hole opened up in the road above the Fortune of War pub.
A scrutiny panel was asked to look at the renovation and rebuilding of structures on the seafront. The report to Thursday’s meeting said: “The range of evidence that was presented led the panel to widen the remit and look at how the seafront could work towards generating more income which could be used to fund structural works. “The panel were acutely aware of the financial climate that is facing the council and hence the focus on looking for the seafront to be as self-sustaining as possible. The chair highlights that the panel wanted ‘the seafront to retain its unique offer but we have to make the most of every opportunity to raise income while ensuring that the income the seafront generates is used as efficiently as possible to sustain its future’.” If the seafront is to become selfsustaining, it is likely to be at the expense of some of the traders who will struggle to pay higher rents. The council is banking on even more demand for the arches on both sides of the Palace Pier once they have been restored. Money to make a start on the massive makeover could come through the local enterprise partnership (LEP) Coast to Capital. Some could come from the parking surplus. It has to be spent on transport projects. A contribution could come from Standard Life Investments which is looking to extend Churchill Square down to the seafront and redevelop the Kings West complex and the Brighton Centre. The council may need to save huge sums of money but it can’t afford to do nothing. On one building alone – the Shelter Hall which used to house the Rip Tide gym – the council is currently spending £100,000 a year on internal scaffolding. Madeira Terrace may be more problematic. It draws big crowds for events. But day-to-day footfall, rents and rates mean that it would be hard to make any upgrade pay for itself. A conference and concert hall at Black Rock could help. The road ahead is likely to be far from smooth, with money being only one of the subjects of wrangling. But, to bend the words of Lao Tzu, even the longest journey starts with a single step.

This week’s headlines from across the city
BEACH HUT HIKE The cost of owning a beach hut in Brighton and Hove is set to become a rich man’s game. For years they were a place where families could decamp and enjoy the good old British weather. But now, as cuts deepen, town hall bosses have unveiled plans for a hike in owning a beach hut. The cost will increase by 50% in the next two years, which for the most expensive huts in Hove will take the annual charge from £928.86 in 2014/15 to £1,393.29 in 2016/17. In Saltdean and Rottingdean, the annual charge will rise from £541.25 to £811.88. It means that owning one will be beyond most families. THEATRE SUCCESS 1 Save Our Hippodrome campaigners are celebrating after plans to convert Brighton's Hippodrome into a cinema multiplex have been shelved. Developers got permission to redevelop the run down and vacant listed building months ago. But the proposal was halted following a decision by cinema operator Vue to pull out of the scheme. It sparked celebration from the thousands who had signed a

petition calling for the venue to be preserved as a place for live performance. Now, the hard work begins ... THEATRE SUCCESS 2 On to more good news for theatre fanatics as work has started on Brighton's Open Air Theatre this weekend. The theatre, on Dyke Park Road, is being built in memory of Adrian Bunting who had always hoped for an open air theatre in Brighton. Sadly he died of pancreatic cancer last year aged just 47. Following his death, his friends took up the challenge and raised tens of thousands of pounds to make his dream come true.
It's hoped that the theatre will host its first play this May. HOUSING PROTEST Dozens of campaigners protested outside Hove Town Hall last week as councillors agreed to increase rents for 12,000 council tenants. The rise is not massive – 2.2% – and it will lead to a £100 million investment in housing across the city. However for those on a limited or no income it will bite into their weekly spending money. Campaigners claim that a “living rent” should be introduced – about £550 a month – rather than the current rate which can be nearly double that. FESTIVAL GO-AHEAD The big news out west this week is that the 35,000 capacity festival planned for Shoreham Airport has been given the go-ahead. The organisers behind the V Festival believe the event would be a massive boost to the town – although the name “Worthing Weekender” has caused a great deal of offence. Many locals were further upset at the planned disruption such a big event would cause. For this reason it took nearly ten hours of discussion and further days of deliberating before Adur's licensing panel gave it the go ahead. It's hoped the 90-plus conditions on the licence will be enough to ease residents’ fears. ALL ABOARD! It's a tiny bus making a big difference. This little wooden bus is one of a fleet of four that will deliver books to the lucky children at Mile Oak Primary School this week. As part of its revamp it has been painted in Brighton and Hove Bus livery, given working lights and a display board. Latest TV's Ceirney Eddie got on board. INSPIRATION TO ALL When Caroline Botterill beat cancer there was only one thing she wanted to do – open her own business. The mother-of-three who lives in Worthing celebrated 18 months in remission with the opening of Sparkle Hair & Nails. And among the plans are to offer pamper days for those batting cancer. thought I ran quite a lot. I try to go out at least three times a week for around the hour mark on each occasion, racking up what I thought was an impressive 3-5 hours of running a week. An amount that I thought would impress my peers and colleagues … well, I thought wrong! A friend of mine posted a very interesting blog on social media quite recently and during my daily procrastination binge I stumbled upon it. It documented one of his favourite past-times. Running. He talked of 3000m ascents over the Irish hills. Seventy-two kilometre marathons over the Aguille de Rouge in the Alps.

Rain, snow, fog, bogs and trenches were commonplace. As was his camelback rucksack. I jokingly asked if he filled it with rum. His eyes became ice daggers. Cold like the icicles he encountered in the Alps. If looks could kill, I was lying face down in one of those bogs in the Irish mountains with frogs gobbling up every last bit of my decomposing body. The blog was brilliantly written and got me thinking. When I come back from my runs, am I tired? Not really. Do my legs ache? No. The next day? Not a chance. So why am I not pushing myself more? I can happily run the distances I keep running so why not push myself? Well, the answer is simple! The only question I need to ask myself is why not? Why have I not

SETTING THE (WHAMMY) BAR HIGH Guy Lloyd: noodling for great Britain already started running more?! Therefore, I’ve now added ‘run more’ to my already bulging New Year’s resolution list. It’s on there with ‘eat less cake’, ‘talk to parents more’ and ‘finish that novel I have yet to even start’. Brighton Lights is a show that doesn’t stop at comfortableness. We are always striving to better ourselves. Whether it be through a superior set, harder-to-get guests or better bands. We are always asking ourselves what can improve. This week is no different. We’ve got a special week packed full of amazing guests, brilliant music and entertaining video inserts. Rob Starr from the Starr Trust Charity told us about their awesome jazz festival happening at the end of the month. Rachel Rankin, one of Britain’s best steel pan players, dazzled us with her pan. Guy Pratt, legendary Pink Floyd bassist, dropped by for a chat. Comedy event organiser Sam Stone also said hi. Adam Buckingham from The Real Junk Food Project had an amazing story to tell us about recycling as much waste food as possible. Whilst author Anna Golawski told us all how to be better parents! Natalia Borg, a very inspirational woman, talked of working with the homeless – and music this week comes from the super talented Vern Asbury. You know the deal: Freeview Channel 8, Virgin Media Channel 159 or live online @ www.thelatest.tv. It’s on at 7pm every Wednesday to Saturday. Don’t miss it! We record every Tuesday night, and if you want to be in the audience get to The Latest Music bar for 6.30pm. Better get a move on, though, we ‘run’ out of space pretty quickly ...

GUY LLOYD
S
Something that would finally give me the national recognition I so richly deserve. I became the UK Air Guitar Champion for 2014. Yes, you read that right – Champion. Not of my bedroom, or house, not of Brighton or Sussex or the South Coast; The United Kingdom, my beloved country (and surrounding areas). Let me take you take you back to the beginning. I first took part in the UK Air Guitar Championships at Concorde 2 in 2011. I had a blue sparkly cat suit (obviously) on at the time and I was confident of doing well. The competition was fierce, and little did I know, the winner was judged on audience reaction. Most of my competitors had bought groups of
friends and all I had was a camera crew. Well, more of a camera man. And he was very quiet. The format starts off quite gentle and then gets more challenging as you progress towards the final. You start off by air guitaring (not a verb but I’m going with it) to a song of your choice. I went with T-Rex’s ‘21st Century Boy’. I slinked and minced and won the crowd over. The next round I was placed in a cage and this obviously restricted my movement. It forced you to be more focused on actually playing the guitar and to still entertain the crowd. From memory, I went with Alice Cooper tongue movements and again, the crowd approved. Next up, I was head to head with two other competitors, all playing guitar to the same track at the same time. And this is where I failed. I took my eye off the ball (one of the girls was very attractive) and the audience picked up on my lack of focus and eliminated me, just short of the final. I was gutted. Anyway, like any true champion, I came back three years later and claimed what was rightfully mine. Crucially, I had a gold cat suit on this time ... AND a cape. I was more or less a rock star superhero and that’s probably the coolest thing one can ever be. There was no cage this time. And again, I had just one cameraman and just two friends in the audience. But it was enough. I took out the other finalists, claimed my trophy and got the No.26 back to Hollingbury, like all good rock stars should. Just to confirm, I am the UK Air Guitar Champion for 2014. And I will be back to retain it in 2015. Prepare your plectrums …
I had a gold cat suit, and a cape
omething quite amazing happened to me before Christmas. Something I had been building up to for years, maybe most of my life.

BARE CHEEK Brian Mitchell and Joseph Nixon’s thoroughly scurrilous Brighton column
WHAT WAS THAT? CAN'T REMEMBER THE NAME OF A BOOK, SONG OR FILM? MIKE HUNTER IS THE MAN WITH THE ANSWERS ... Dear Mike, Bit of an unusual one for you here – it's a place I'm trying to remember the name of, which I used to visit as a young man as a “mod”. I would ride my motor scooter there and engage in pitched battles with “rockers”, and would love to visit again to relive those carefree days. Here are the facts as I remember them; it's a seaside town on the South East coast of England, a vibrant but slightly seedy place, once very much associated with the “dirty weekend”, and now very popular with the homosexual community. It was once famous for its two piers, but I've a feeling one of them burnt down or something. It's a quintessentially English place and was immortalised in a novel by the late writer Graham Greene. Oh, and it begins with ‘B’ (but it's not Blackpool, Bournemouth, or Bridlington. I've checked.) George Fitzherbert, Eastbourne Dear George, You know, there are times when I suspect people writing in to this column are “taking the mickey” but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. The sunny, gayfriendly resort of which you speak is, of course, Dronfield in North East Derbyshire. Please keep those letters coming in, folks. Mike XXX .

Bardsley’s Fish & Chips
I
t was years before I left the UK for the first time. I was twenty years old and I had won a bursary from the then Thames Television to travel to Paris and study clowning. Up until then I had seen a lot of the UK, spent a week in the Isle of Man on a school trip, and that was it. Paris was a joy. I became addicted to the place – the style, the arrogance of the Parisians and the warmth of the people, not Parisian, who lived there. I studied and partied, I went to see productions of Hamlet, David Copperfield and Mr Fox. I saw great art and ate great food. I was absorbed by and with the city. To this day my memory of Paris smells of butter, sugar and vanilla as every day started with milky coffee and palmier pastries.
COME FLY WITH ME
Given how much I travel, why have I suddenly become scared? It was a good start and since then I have had no fear of travel, happily jumping on planes and trains, often alone. Solo travel should have been scary but for me it meant freedom. You go where you like, when you like and have no one but yourself to answer to. It’s bliss, choosing whether to go culture crazy or to lie by the pool reading a book and drinking ice-cold beers. So why is it that my most recent trip has filled me with a newfound fear? It is the longest journey I have made for many years, but I cannot see how that makes a difference. It is to Canada and the USA where I have never been before, but why should that matter? There will be no language barrier. Perhaps I am scared after my terrible trip to the Channel Islands last year. Four nights in intensive care certainly tainted my view of travel, and despite this seeming terribly English, it is not. For anyone visiting the Channel Islands be aware that there is no NHS, nor is it Europe, so your European Union health cover card has no validity. Shocked and surprised? Yes, so was I. Fortunately the money I have spent for years on a bank account that includes travel insurance paid
The job is somewhat ambassadorial as we will be representing Brighton and Hove, albeit unofficially ... off – and paid up! Needless to say I will be avoiding milk of the unpasteurised type on this trip and being very careful in anything else I do. Vancouver is my first stop. I am very excited about being there and making a new International Chef Exchange TV film with Matty Bowling, head chef at Terre à Terre. The job is somewhat ambassadorial as we will be representing Brighton and Hove,
albeit unofficially, showing once again that our city is an amazing place to visit, especially when it comes to great food. Following that, and as you read this, I will be flying down to Las Vegas where we plan to make another film, although I must confess that Las Vegas does look like the sort of city that can be scarily addictive. In moments online I discovered at least ten shows that I would love to see, especially the magic shows. Added to which there are the casinos. Now, I’m not a gambler. I don’t bother with things like the Grand National and although I enjoy a trip to Brighton Racecourse I hardly go mad, little bets of a few pounds are my limit and I certainly never go above my pre-decided budget. Maybe this fear is of gambling, the idea that on the tip of a coin you can lose everything. Maybe it’s the fear of cocktail bars with a ‘happy four hours $19.99 drink as much as you like/can’? You know, I’m feeling better already.

This event is a great opportunity to raise the profile of what services we’re providing locally as well as keeping the Macmillan Horizon Centre build in the forefront of people’s minds as we continue to raise funds to complete it. It’s fantastic when we can link local businesses with local services like our nurses and provide entertainment from it – what a great bunch of sports! SPOTTED! The very lovely gold-medal winning duo, Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean. Looking fresh as a daisy, we spotted the Olympic champions and stars of Dancing On Ice having lunch together. The pair, who filmed the last series of the popular ITV skating show, will be back on our screens this year in new series Ice Rink On The Estate. ITV have signed T & D up for a new three part factual series that will see them return to their home city of Nottingham to work with residents of an inner city estate, to see if they can make a difference to their lives by teaching them a new skill. Heroes in their hometown, the pair already have a housing estate named after them; if they have success with this project, another estate could be theirs!
BAD BEHAVIOUR We hear rumours that local glamour queen, Katie Price, could be about to enter the Celebrity Big Brother house after reportedly receiving a 'six-figure sum' to join the show. The 2015 CBB is already courting controversy after the booting out of former Coronation Street actor Ken Morley, who was told to leave after using a racist term in a discussion about Frank Bruno. Ken, 71, has since apologised 'unreservedly' for behaviour on ITV's Loose Women. Just three days into the 2015 series, producers also axed American actor Jeremy for exposing another contestant’s breast, leaving her in a fit of tears. The former Baywatch actor was thrown out of the famous Elstree compound following the incident in which he exposed his fellow housemate by pulling open her dressing gown. Let’s hope Katie can raise the tone!

LOOKING TO THE RHONE
under review
BLACK HEART
By Annabel Jackson n the face of astronomic price hikes in Bordeaux in the last few years, and a string of low-yielding vintages in Burgundy, savvy wine consumers should now be looking to the Rhone. How does one get to get to grips with the Rhone? It is an elongated region that stretches from just below Burgundy to just above Provence. Can it, then, be classified as a single entity? Certainly some of the big, long-standing family names such as Chapoutier, Giugal, Perrin and Delas now own vineyards in both “sides”. And it is striking that across the whole Rhone there is a continued commitment to terroir and tradition. The most illustrious Rhone names have generally been from the north. Cote-Rotie and Hermitage for dark, long-lived syrah and, for white wine, Condrieu, made with viognier. One name has historically stood out in the south, though, commanding good prices, and that’s Chateauneuf-du-Pape. These high alcohol, fruity red wines are a blend of 13 grape varieties, though few producers bother with that amount of work any more, tending instead to concentrate on GSM – the grenache-syrah-mourvedre blend which is increasingly finding success in Australia. Indeed, one of the Perrin family (Chateau Beaucastel) memorably commented on how it was the fruity and high alcohol Australian wines which had helped to bring Chateauneuf-du-Pape back into fashion. In the southern part, some of the best value is from nearby “cru” villages like the well-established Gigondas, and Vacqueyras. The latter was only upgraded to AOC status in 1990, and produces wines with a slightly more rustic character than Gigondas. The best value in the north of the region can be found in CrozesHermitage, Saint Joseph and Cornas. Here a breed of young wine makers are retracing tradition, emphasising terroir over, for example, overextraction. An initiative to re-instate a long-abandoned vineyard – Sessuel – was headed up the young rising star winemaker Yves Cuilleron.

grey, drizzly day in Brighton set the scene nicely for what was to come… The Woman In Black is atmospheric, intense and captivating. Using very basic props and an understated set, it is incredible what the production team of The Woman In Black achieve; they successfully submerge their audience into a world of paranormal activity and suspense. This performance is not for the faint hearted and you may even get a little chill down your spine as you walk home, but it really shows how powerful the theatre can be. Well worth mustering up the courage to see!

BRIGHTON PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA, MARTIN ROSCOE (PIANO) ANDREW GOURLAY (CONDUCTOR) The New Year began brilliantly with a veteran soloist and a charismatic young conductor. Brahms’ Piano Concerto No.1 is a very dramatic work, inspired by the tragic death of Robert Schumann. However, this impassioned performance also found its lyrical beauties and deeper, tender emotions. The audience responded with thunderous applause.
Beethoven’s 7th Symphony made a pleasant contrast. Bright and uplifting, it seemed almost Spring-like. Even the sombre-starting Allegretto quickly picked up to re-establish the joyful mood. Finally it all bubbled over in the thrilling, manic race of the last movement, conductor and orchestra revelling in their speed, accuracy and excitement. Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, 11 January 2015 ★★★★★ Andrew Connal
DIRTY DANCING With several hot and sultry dance routines and intimate love scenes any winter chills were soon banished in this touring production. As with the film original, the stage show used music from the iconic era of the early 1960s, complimented with some classy choreography and superb sets; a real joy to watch. Rosanna Frascona plays Baby, a young lady, little in stature but Frascona puts in a big performance, alongside the outstanding Gareth Bailey who stars as Johnny. The two, came together with real chemistry and were supported by a hugely talented cast who put on a marvellously crafted tribute to the film. The timeless, cross-generational Dirty Dancing really cleaned up, absolutely brilliant! Congress Theatre, Eastbourne, 15 January 2015 ★★★★★ Jacob White

GATHERING ROSS The traveller of tangents and the ruler of misrule Ross Noble is back with his 15th tour, bringing nothing but his incredible imagination to the stage once more Tickets for your 15th tour, Tangentleman, are now on sale. What is it you enjoy about touring so much? Is it my 15th? I’ve no idea. It depends what you class as a tour. I started doing stand-up when I was 15, and I’m 37 now. And I’ve pretty much been gigging relentlessly that whole time. It was 1999 when I stopped doing the comedy clubs and started touring on my own. But when you tour the UK and Ireland, and then go off and do the rest of the world, and then go off to Australia for six months, is that all one tour or not? I’ve just released my 9th DVD, and most of those have got a couple of different shows on them. I suppose I’m a bit like Bob Dylan; I’m just on one never-ending tour. Anyone who’s ever seen your work before knows it’s not exactly what you’d call ‘structured’. Is there any point in asking what people can expect from Tangentleman? I think what I try and do is do the show that I would want to see if I went to see somebody live. I like to keep it interesting for the audience, and I like to keep it interesting for myself. I’m naturally quite playful in the way I approach life, and that’s what I try to bring to the live shows. What that means is your show is basically different every night. Do you get people who come back again and again? Yeah, some do. The way that I work, I go on stage and I improvise stuff. Somebody might say something that will spark five or ten minutes or more of improv, and then out of that ten minutes, there might be one nugget of an idea that I like, which I’ll maybe expand and kick around the next night. The best way to describe it is some comedians write out lists of words, to remind them what to say, whereas my show is like taking a bucket full of cartoon characters and melting them, then taking that melted cartoon sludge, putting it in a water pistol, and firing it into the air. With a scripted show, comics will often leave their best material to the end. Do you ever worry that you might finish on something that doesn’t work? That’s why my shows are so long: “No, that’s not good enough to end on. I’d better do another five minutes. Is that good enough? No. Five more.” But in terms of ending the show, I’ve probably started ten different stories, so I’ve got to try and get back to them to wrap them all up. So the problem I normally have is remembering all the things I’ve started.
Watch Latest Entertainment on
Do you ever wake up in the middle of the night and think: “I didn’t finish that bit…” Oh, all the time! The great thing about Twitter is that now people will just tweet me and go: “You never finished talking about that thing…” Very often I’m in the hotel bar, or a Nandos, or a petrol station the day after the gig, and someone will come up and go: “I was at the show last night. What was that you were going on about?” You get really involved with the audience. Do people ever come up with something that throws you? Yeah, all the time, but that’s the fun of it. Sometimes stuff happens that you think would completely ruin the show. For example, I did one gig where the fire alarm went off. That could knacker the whole thing. The audience had to be evacuated. But I went outside and just continued doing the gig while everyone was standing around. And there was a little kid there, probably about 12. With the fire engines behind me I got people to take pictures of me,
• LATEST 7 19 www.thelatest.co.uk •
so it looked like I was saving a child’s life. Then we all went back in, and I came onstage and brought the fire brigade out with me like a chorus line, and we all took a bow. And I was thinking; “The firemen will be loving that,” and one of them just went; “Don’t go thinking you’re special, I’ve already been onstage with Goldfrapp.” People have also taken to leaving items onstage during the interval that you interact with later on. What kind of stuff do they leave? I have no idea where it started, but people just started giving little gifts on the stage. Then it just became a thing where people tried to outdo each other. There are some nights where there’s so much I have to get a broom and just push it all off to the side. When people make stuff themselves, that’s amazing. The best one I ever had was somebody made me a proper suit made out of bubble wrap. It was great. And people leave vegetables that they’ve carved into the shape of my face, stuff like that. But I have to be careful, otherwise I’ll suddenly discover that I’ve done an hour of just talking about the stuff people have left onstage. Lastly, is it really true that you once played the love interest to Ian Smith, who played Harold Bishop in Neighbours? Yeah! I did. I’ve always been a stand-up throughand-through. Some comics just want to act. I’ve always thought; “If I ever do that, it’s got to be fun.” Two years ago, Peter Richardson asked me if I wanted to be in the new Comic Strip. So of course I did that, and it was so much fun that I wanted to do a bit more. I then did a horror film, Stitches, playing a murderous undead clown out for revenge. So I got a taste for these acts, but didn’t write either of them. Then a friend of mine who makes an Australian show called It’s a Date, a drama about people going on dates, suggested I cowrite and star in an episode. It can be anything you want. Now, I could have chosen anyone to star with ... instead I said; “I know exactly what I want to do. I want to play a gay fella who’s on Grindr, looking for a guy, and he thinks he’s going to meet somebody who looks like Antonio Banderas.” And my mate said; “Right. And who would you be on the date with?” And I said; “Ian Smith. Harold from Neighbours.” So I wrote the script and that was it. Even as it was happening, I couldn’t get my head around the fact that Harold was my love interest. Maybe one day it’ll get shown over here. A MURDEROUS INTENT
Lucy Worsley presents a gorey history at Worthing’s Connaught Theatre istorian Lucy Worsley talks murder at Worthing Theatres, in a new illustrated tour through the dark story of our fascination with the subject. A Very British Murder comes to the Connaught Theatre on Wednesday 4 February and tickets are on sale now. Lucy has covered the history of this very British obsession in a book and BBC TV series of the same name, and in this theatre tour she shares its secrets. A renowned historian and Chief Curator at the charity Historic Royal Palaces, Lucy will examine some notorious crimes and criminals in expert detail, but also explains how murder became a form of middle-class entertainment through novels, plays, paintings and the press. Starting with a horrific early nineteenthcentury serial killer in the East End of London, she’ll end with the tame (by comparison) drawing room dramas of Agatha Christie. Lucy Worsley’s ‘A Very British Murder’ at the Connaught Theatre starts at 7.30pm on Wednesday 4 February. For tickets and booking information call the box office on 01903 206206 or visit www.worthingtheatres.co.uk

POETRY OR PROPAGANDA?
A STITCH IN TIME
ast week I wrote about American Sniper and I just couldn’t help but do so again, although that isn’t quite the compliment it sounds … 2014 might have been a failure for Clint Eastwood, after his blunder with the big-screen version of musical Jersey Boys the past summer, until he released a surprise into the Oscar season (that’s pre-Christmas in America although it is out in cinemas of the UK now); American Sniper, the Iraq War drama starring Bradley Cooper as the most lethal sniper the US military has ever employed. The previous most notable time Eastwood snuck a movie into December at the last minute it was Million Dollar Baby, the eventual Best Picture winner. I love Million Dollar Baby as a film – it’s tender, the performances are evolved and although its final sequence gives us a poignant, albeit limited, treatment of the topic of euthanasia, the film’s lack of interest in the ethical and legal details of modern medicine give it a dreamlike quality as the ethical and legal details are brushed over. That makes it a great piece of filmmaking. The issues within the film I’m not so behind: Million Dollar Baby was controversial because to some viewers it conveyed an unfortunate view of disability, suggesting that life with a disability might not be worth living. Eastwood’s character is seen as good and heroic for euthanizing his disabled friend. Equally, American Sniper brushes over many ethical issues raised by its protagonist’s line of work. But it is a shrewder piece – a focused declaration that Eastwood owns the ‘war film’. Right from its taught opening scene we can marvel at the direction; at its poise and subtlety, at the handling of Bradley Cooper’s huge acting ability (which, in all honesty, I personally hadn’t felt before this film) and at the raw honesty of the bloodiness of war. Yet, it is a bloodshed felt emotionally only on one side. When Iraqis die there are no meaningful moments, no powerful pauses, no care is given. I often wonder, when actors take a role that boils down to ‘malevolent, deceitful native’ do they do so believing that elsewhere in the film are positive representations of people from their culture? A thought along the lines of “it’s okay; I’m just characterising the one percent of bad people”? Sadly not in this film. Here the Iraq occupation is seen through the sight of a highpowered rifle belonging to the man who wrote the memoir this film is based upon: Chris Kyle, a man who, thanks to an unprecedented number of sniper kills, earned the sobriquet “the Legend”. Kyle may have felt that his enemies represented a “savage, despicable evil” (as he wrote in his book) but that gives Eastwood no right to make what is essentially a propaganda film.
’ve always regarded sewing machines as the enemy. As for wool ... I’ve been attempting to knit a cushion cover for George (cat two) for three years now. This less than impressive progress being hampered by the penchant of Gilbert (cat one) for eating trailing yarn and attacking the needles. So I’m always in utter awe of the brilliantly Diane Rogers innovative textile artists we come across in the course of producing Brighton’s Arty publications. (And I can only assume that if they possess pets, they’re better behaved than ours!) A new entrant in this year’s book, Brighton’s Artists 2015, is Agnes Chevalier. Her extensive portfolio of fine art embroidery is inspired by the English countryside, with a special focus on ancient forests and extraordinary trees. Agnes reworks photos and paints the images onto fabric. Then using her trusty Bernina sewing machine she draws with the Heidi Jane Rhodes needle just as she would paint, stitching layers of vibrant embroidery threads to create an incredible 3D effect. Also taking inspiration from the natural world – but in dramatic contrast – is textile artist, designer and painter Diane Rogers. Her work explores the beauty that is caused by the passage of time and exposure to the natural elements. Destruction, neglect and decay are revealed in fascinating shapes, textures and patterns, and the results imbue each Agnes Chevalier artwork with a realistic, compelling tactile quality. On a lighter note, the textile whimsies of Heidi Jane Rhodes can be found at the Naughty Pirates Gallery and I guarantee will make you smile. Using techniques she has specially developed, Heidi’s trademark loose threads lend an energy and movement to iconic buildings and the people who interact with them. Her work has a nostalgic, magical feel – often with a touch of humour – made, she says, for the ‘child in you’. See for yourself at the Arch 237 on the seafront. www.artymagazines.com

PULL THE OTHER ONE A new home for an old venue, and plenty of tr eats to come
P
sstt! Have you heard yet? You know those brilliant people at Otherplace Productions – the ones who pitch up camp and create the marvellous Fringe space that is The Warren every May, have programmed award-winning shows from comedy and theatre in that very space as well as over at Bar Broadway (as was the Three And Ten) and Marwoods? Those people, yes. They’ve moved base for 2015, into The Basement right in the he art of the North Laine, with two venues, a bar and bigger spaces all year around. James Turnbull, Producer for Otherplace Brighton, commented; “Under the leadership of Helen Medland, The Basement has built up a truly international reputation for excellence at the forefront of contemporary arts. As Helen and her team focus on the hugely successful Sick! Festival, we are delighted to have the opportunity to continue to develop the venue, so it remains one of the city's leading cultural highlights.” Which means that you need not fear for all of the remarkably curated arts shows the Basement has become known for. There’s just more now. As Artistic Director at Otherplace, Nicola Haydn, said; “The launch of Otherplace at The Basement means we can continue supporting new acts and introducing audiences to more great quality theatre and performance, as well as expanding in new

directions that wouldn’t have been possible previously.” Tantalising, isn’t it? This is the production company that Daniel Kitson recommended to Josie Long. That Sarah Millican did previews with. That saw Seann Walsh perform his first ever gig at their longstanding new act night, Rabbit In The Headlights. They’ve got good form. So who’s coming up in the new year? Well, David Trent is in town on Saturday 31 January with his show ‘Renamed’. Recently seen trying not to corpse on stage as part of Nick Helm’s Christmas show at the Leicester Square Theatre, Trent is a marvel of Powerpoint and deadpan. Award-winning comic Edward Aczel tries out his latest Work In Progress show in early February. And the aforementioned Rabbit In The Headlights night celebrates its tenth birthday with special guest appearances by past acts, and new safe-pair-of-hands host Rob Dumbrell. There are, of course, many other shows to be found on the website; I’m just teasing you with these few. So well done Otherplace Productions. Congratulations on ten years of brilliant shows, a new home and a new ye ar of great programming. Keep up the good work. www.otherplacebrighton.co.uk

Jeff Hemmings charts the rise of the Swedish musical siblings
M
ade up of sisters Johanna and Klara Soderberg, Sweden's biggest musical export of recent years were initially helped along by their father who was a member of Swedish rock and pop band Lolita Pop, and who had a home studio. The sisters started making their own music in the mid 2000s, before a chance meeting in a kindergarden between the sisters mother and The Knife's Karin Dreijer Andersson led to
them being signed to Rabid Records, co-owned by The Knife, and through which they released their debut EP, ‘Drunken Trees’, in 2008. Subsequently, they uploaded a cover of Fleet Foxes’ ‘Tiger Mountain Peasant Song’ to Youtube, which was picked up by Rob Pecknold of Fleet Foxes, who posted a link to the band's webpage, inevitably causing a surge of interest – which led to the duo signing with Wichita, home to Klara's hero Conor Obert of Bright
Eyes. They didn't perform their first show outside Scandinavia until around this time, at the Crossing Border Festival. Fleet Foxes also performed there, and the duo joined them on stage to sing ‘Tiger Mountain Peasant Song’. With success beckoning, the girls quit school, and their father – now a teacher – took leave and accompanied them on tour. The debut album ‘The Big Black & The Blue’ was released in 2010, followed by ‘The Lion's Roar’ in 2012, debuting at number one in Sweden. Also, realising an early dream, the duo ended up performing and touring with Conor Oberst. Massively in thrall to the music, styles and history of the United States of America, old and new, their music is heavily folk-country biased, although last year’s ‘Stay Gold’ album is more expansive whilst still retaining those soaring vocal melodies and classic country instrumentation. It made number 11 here in the UK, and not surprisingly their show at the Dome has already sold out. Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, Sat 24 Jan, 7.30pm, SOLD OUT

ile Oak Primary School in Portslade intend to raise the aspirations and enrich the lives of their students through science. The pupils were recently thrilled to be presented with some miniature buses that have been revamped by some very clever engineers from Brighton and Hove Bus and Coach Company. The buses were originally built eight years ago by Peter Coleman, a friend of the school, and are used for transporting books to and fro. As said by Steve, the Director of Engineering at Brighton and Hove buses; “It was quite overwhelming to see the children’s reaction to the It was quite buses.” The Deputy Head, Martin overwhelming to Cooper, told the pupils that they see the children’s would also have their very own ex-service bus, kindly donated reaction by Brighton and Hove buses, to be placed in their field. The pupils were further delighted to be told that the bus would not be a reading or writing bus, but would be converted into a ‘science bus’! As a primary STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) centre hub, the bus will be open to other primary schools to enjoy and benefit from. The proposal for the bus is to have a sky/space theme on the top and an earth/water theme on the bottom. Part of the design includes a dome for an observatory and a wind turbine. These two aspects tie in with a project that we aim to do here at PACA as the basis of a STEM six-part documentary with Latest TV. For this project, called “Get SET (Science, Engineering and Technology) … Portslade”, we aim to promote STEM within the local community, showcasing the local businesses, the unique area and engaging members of the community – from the youngest to the oldest! If you would like to volunteer your time/expertise or sponsor these projects in any way, then we would be very happy to hear from you.

MONDAY 26 The Great Car Con: Channel 4 Dispatches Channel 4, 8pm With a title like that, this current affairs programme could be set to cover any number of dubious claims the motor industry and the oil giants have put out there. This one, however, focuses on why politicians encouraged the ‘dash for diesel’ and whether it really does deliver all that it says.
Catastrophe Channel 4, 10pm Sharon Horgan and Rob Delaney team up their acid humour and wits to create this darkly funny new comedy about an Irish woman and an American man who find that their fling has turned into a full blown deeply ridiculous relationship when they fall pregnant. And her brother Fergal’s none too pleased either.
The Arabian Motorcycle Adventures: Storyville BBC4, 10pm This is one heck of a true and uniquely personal and international story, of Matt Van Dyke from Baltimore who left home with a motorbike and a video camera to travel a 35,000 trip across northern Africa and the Middle East. Involving friendship, war and more.
