EDITOR’S NOTE

O

h February, where for art thou February? January’s big brother, and one step closer to the spring thaw. What’s that? It’s just around the corner? Oh good, I’ll calm myself down then ... Chilly weather aside, we never stop here at L-HQ. This week, Andrew Kay is battling with any seasoned traveller’s conundrum – what to pack! It’s hard enough at the best of times ... on many an occasion I’ve found myself in foreign climes with a completely inappropriate wardrobe, but how much worse would it be if you had TV cameras pointing at you all the livelong day? Andrew, we sympathise. But let’s momentarily forget dressing for the seasons, and the fact that we’re still shrouding ourselves in winter woollies – we visited JoJo’s Gelato this week, and can safely say we’ve been convinced that gelato is a tasty treat the

whole year round. JoJo’s artisan recipes are healthier than regular icecream too, so you can bet your hundreds and thousands that we’ll be frequenting this venue well into the spring and summer months. Have you tried it yet? Read our full write-up on page 15. And there’s plenty more, besides. I’m not sure I could tell Art Deco from Bauhaus if my life depended on it, but I can appreciate a beautiful thing when I see it. For lovers of beautiful things and design aficionados alike, Decofairs is coming to Brighton and it’s the perfect opportunity to peruse vintage treasures, window shop (or shop for real!) talk to like-minded enthusiasts and generally indulge the senses. For more, see page 17. Maybe winter’s not so bad. Louise Bevan, Editor Email your comments to editorial@thelatest.co.uk or visit us online at thelatest.co.uk

Brighton and Hove City Council leader Jason Kitcat Brighton & Hove’s first ‘low emission zone’ has officially launched – stretching along the main corridor from The Old Steine as far as Palmeira Square. Air pollution is an invisible killer. It’s linked to lung problems, heart failure and premature deaths – and recently the World Health Organisation also declared it to be carcinogenic. In the UK alone some 29,000 people every year die because of bad air. However working in partnership with bus and taxi companies we’ve developed a Low Emission Zone scheme that is set to make a real difference. Bus companies large and small are playing their part in making public transport cleaner. Brighton & Hove Buses has invested £6m in a raft of hybrid buses running across the city, cutting emissions and fuel bills. Meanwhile Cuckmere Buses, a small company run by volunteers, has just spent £90,000 on a new clean bus. The benefits stretch far and wide across the city. Nearly every single bus in Brighton & Hove passes through the zone so as well as cleaning up the air in town, it also means less pollution for anyone living, working or playing near a bus route across the city.

Taxi drivers are also doing their bit by turning off their engines while stationary at taxi ranks. This builds on our successful joint project fitting at least 25 taxis with cleaner exhaust technology to slash emissions. In some of our city centre hotspots, traffic fumes have been double the European and English legal limits for decades. Whether by making public transport, cycling and walking safer and more reliable, or by working with partners like the bus company to reduce emissions, the only way to clean up the air we all breathe is to reduce the number of polluting vehicles on our streets.

THE VOTE

A budget mayor and cuts in grants given to charities will save money this year but may prove costly over the long term

L

eading figures in the community and voluntary sector in Brighton and Hove have spoken of their concerns about the next round of spending cuts. They accept that Brighton and Hove City Council has to try to save more than £20 million in the coming financial year. And the sum is likely to rise in the years immediately after. They want to help. But they believe that cuts to grants may prove counter-productive. They fear that charities and voluntary groups will close. Those being helped will turn instead to the council or other taxpayer-funded organisations. And this will end up costing the council money that it was hoping to save. The sums seem big at first glance. It is proposed to cut grant funding for community groups by £350,000. A further £200,000 is expected to be taken from services that provide community support for these groups. Experts have suggested that the cuts could have not just a destabilising effect but force the closure of cheap and effective organisations. The council struck a deal with them in better times to provide grants which are used for what is known as core funding. With a stable income, they have the capacity to apply for money from elsewhere such as the lottery, big

trusts or the government. Locally, dozens of organisations have generated income running into many millions of pounds. All this is now at risk. Much of the youth work taking place has its roots in real problems. It is almost 16 years since Jay Kensett was stabbed to death in Brighton and nearly ten years since any gangs were a sustained cause for concern. While many factors have helped, targeted youth work has played a key part.

We are concerned about the bigger impact on communities Ben Glazebrook, who helps run the Brighton and Hove Youth Collective, said: “We work in some of the city’s most disadvantaged communities including Moulsecoomb, Tarner, Hangleton and Knoll and Whitehawk. “Aspects of our work emerged out of very challenging circumstances for young people in

the past. Over the years, the council and the community and voluntary sector have worked incredibly hard together to ensure that there is a strong youth offer here. As a result, there are places to go and things to do across the city. “We are concerned about the bigger impact on communities given the potential impact of the cuts as a whole and the cumulative effect of cuts to services.” Mr Glazebrook is not alone. One local community worker said; “There’s an old saying that idle hands make mischief. When that happens then the council, the police and the NHS are likely to be the ones picking up the bill.” Another aspect of the budget to raise eyebrows in some quarters is the proposal to take more than £80,000 out of the £120,000 budget spent supporting the mayor. Unlike Boris Johnson in London, the mayor of Brighton and Hove is not an executive or decision-making mayor. In the words of the author Walter Bagehot, describing the role of the modern monarch, his or her role is dignified. The mayor is a ceremonial position and above party politics. He or she – this year it’s Councillor Brian Fitch – meets and greets visitors, opens events, gives prizes and raises money for charity. The draft council budget spoke about a “service redesign reducing the mayoralty to basic functions including removing staffing support”. It also suggested “no administrative support for organising events such as remembrance”. Each mayor is different but the vast majority provide some of the best PR that the council can expect, and for a modest sum in a budget of more than £700 million. There is no escaping the challenging nature of the task of balancing the council’s books. And whichever party emerges with the most seats after the local elections in May is likely to face even more of a financial headache. It is perhaps easy to criticise individual cuts and harder to identify alternatives. But the work of the mayor and of a number of local charities are aspects of the looming budget that may repay a rethink.

LATEST NEWS

This week’s headlines from across the city BUDGET BAFFLER In little more than a month's time, Brighton and Hove City Council will set its budget. The question over how much council tax we'll pay is still up in the air. What is clear is that £25 million worth of savings must be found if the books are to be balanced. However, the whole plan has been thrown up in the air after a group of ruling Greens said they disagreed with making any cuts at all. This goes directly against what the party has been saying all along – that a 5.9% council tax rise will be enough to keep vital services running. But despite backing their opponents into a corner, some Greens have now turned around and said this is not enough – handing the advantage straight back to Conservatives and Labour. There's a lot still to come on this, no doubt, until the budget is set in February. And for those interested, some of the issues will be debated at a Have Your Say event in the Brighthelm Centre this evening (Tuesday 27 January) from 7.30pm.

CARNIVAL CANCELLED More than 20,000 people attended last year's Kemptown Carnival. But, despite it being one of the most popular outdoor events in the city, 2015's version has been cancelled. The reason? Well, organisers put it down to money – claiming that not enough can be raised to support the event and pay for

Watch Latest News on

things like suspending parking bays and policing. Not everyone appears that upset however, with some local traders claiming the event forced them to shut up shop and lose out on a day's income.

SAFEHAVEN It is one of the biggest issues affecting older people. And now Brighton and Hove Bus Company has got on board with a plan to make things easier for those with dementia. The firm has created two ‘safehavens’ – which means those with the condition can receive support, advice and even just a cup of tea if they are out and about and feel confused. The area at the OneStop travel shop in Brighton's North Street opened last week. With thousands from the city suffering, this support will make a massive difference to some. SALT 'N' PEPPER Last week saw Sussex hit with the first sprinkling of the white stuff. And, with the temperatures now hovering just above freezing daily, it seems that snow preperations are well underway. One of the more novel ideas is putting salt in the Pepperpot near Queens Park. It's all part of a plan by community activists to make sure that if heavy snow does come then there are enough supplies to clear the roads, and pathways to ensure people can get out and about.

HOTEL PLANS After years of false hope it seems that plans to redevelop the Shoreham Civic Centre site are moving forward. The original plan was to put a supermarket on the site. But my sources tell me that Adur District Council chiefs now hope to attract a hotel chain to take on the key site. Expect more developments in the coming months. TOURISM BLOW As cuts to public funding deepen, Worthing Borough Council has announced it will close its Visitor Information Centre. The building opened with much aplomb three years ago. And despite more than three million people a year visiting the town, councillors believe they have no other option. It's not all bad news though, as three red phone boxes are to be turned into mini pop-up centres, while online info will be developed for those who are tech-savvy. But coming hot on the heels of Brighton and Hove doing a similar move, lets hope that there's limited impact on visitor numbers to our area.

CHANGING TIMES It used to be ridiculed as a retirement town, where new trends and fads were laughed at. But Worthing is changing – not least with the opening of a new pioneering cafe. Daisy Moo's Bakehouse in Bath Place serves only vegetarian and vegan food – a common site in Brighton, but not so much along the coast. But given the reaction it has provoked in the first few months, it seems like residents have taken the shop to their hearts. It's yet further proof that Worthing is a town on the up.

OK so that’s two pints, a gin and tonic and a vodka cranberry. Clare, what were you having again? Soda water?” I found this a strange and unimaginative choice from my normally alcohol-driven friend. Or maybe she’s challenging herself to remain deadpan, displaying little to no emotion on all subjects throughout the month. The barmaid saw my look of disorientation and came to my aid when I explained the situation. Clare wasn’t drinking for the whole of January! It all made so much more sense. The soda water. The

HITTING THE HIGH NOTES Guy Lloyd is fulfilling a long-term musical ambition ... jumpiness. The scratching, and of course, the anxiousness. I presumed that was due to her not washing. I smugly walked back over and gave everyone the drinks. I took Clare by the hand, looked her dead in the eye and simply said; “I know. Shhhh, shh, don’t worry I know. And I thought you just weren’t washing. We’re all really proud.” She looked back, paused and replied; “Thank you.” It was a beautiful moment. nothing done. Nobody did. It was too hot and we were too lazy. But life has moved on and I’m lucky enough to live in a city that is (mostly) full of creative, inspirational people that don’t just talk about doing that ‘thing’. They go out and do it. The more people do that, the more it inspires the people around them. And I’ve been inspired. Inspired to do something I probably should have done twenty five years ago. I’m learning to sing. Regular visitors to this blog will know that my band recently reformed after twenty three years. Before that band, I was in others, so all in all I’ve probably been in bands on and off since 1989. In all of those bands, I have been the singer. And in all of those bands, I have been unable to sing. I’m lucky in that the band I have had around me during that time

(there’ve been changes but I’m no Mark E. Smith), have been a talented bunch of musicians and they have carried me (sometimes literally) through the gigs on a wave of musical euphoria and heavy alcohol consumption. In short, it was generally accepted by the band, the audience, but mostly by me that I could not sing. But as long as I was prepared to dress as Superman, a woman and at one stage, stark butt-naked, then I could stay in the band. I wasn’t fooled. I knew I was in the band because I was prepared to make an arse of myself on stage in front of a live audience and I was more than happy with this. Anyway, that is about to change. I want to be able to hit the odd note. Just to shock people. It’s all very well mincing around in a cat suit but I want to be able to move people emotionally. And not just towards the bar for some kind of escape route from my screaming. So I signed up for one to one singing lessons just before Christmas and I’ve had three lessons since. It’s clear I am not going to be the next Freddie Mercury. Not even the next Matt Cardle. But I’m enjoying it; it’s kind of cathartic to really belt out a tune. There is something quite spiritual about it, which is one of the reasons why music is such an important part of our lives. And I’m actually noticing some improvement. But for me, as a front man, it will always be more about the lyrca and the eyeliner than the actual singing. Some things just come more naturally to me.

I knew I was in the band because I was prepared to make an arse of myself on stage

spoke in an earlier blog about taking on new challenges and self-development. Not just in the New Year but all year round. N

ow I know I don’t look it (come on, go with me on this) but I am about to hit the ripe old age of 59. It’s not a milestone year I know – that comes in 12 months’ time – but it is somewhat daunting. When I say I don’t look it, what I suppose I really mean is that I don’t dress it. I still have the wardrobe sensibilities of an art student and this became very apparent a few weeks back when I started to pack for my trip. I’m not a fan of watching myself on the TV. Telly puts on ten pounds they say; what they don’t say is that it puts on ten pounds in every direction. I guess that self-image is based on a vision that you hold of yourself when you feel that you looked your best. Hahahaha – no chance of me hitting that 32-inch

A DRESSING DOWN

I’m out of the closet in oh so many ways ... waist rack any time soon. I was packing with a view to filming. That means a lot of clothes that can work in a variety of combinations to give the illusion of a vast wardrobe. Some days I need to change three or four times, which is obviously not possible with a 23 kilo baggage allowance and trousers that burst the 40-inch waist barrier – cloth is surprisingly heavy. This time around I also had the problem of radical differences in temperature. Vancouver can drop to minus four at this time of the year whereas Las Vegas can hit 16 degrees. In the end I opted for shirts over Tshirts and a light but very smart suit. With a selection of ties and cravats it seemed like a plan. Twelve days, though, proved to be rather a lot of shirts. I’m not short of shirts, I have in excess of 50 which I know is rather too many. Many of these are of course of the colourful ‘Hawaiian’

Telly puts on ten pounds they say; what they don’t say is that it puts on ten pounds in every direction variety – not suitable for smart dinners in fine restaurants but I hoped okay for treading the streets of Vegas. Of the rest I chose a selection of plain, stripes and checks, rather a lot of checks, so many that it looked like a wardrobe hamper for a touring production of Oklahoma. Not inappropriate I thought and rather jolly. Maybe I should look into buying some leather chaps when I hit the States? No you’re right, maybe not! To supplement this I packed a

swimming costume, a pair of shorts, a pair of jeans and a warm coat – one with a zipper to ward off those cold pacific winds. I packed an umbrella too and scarf and gloves, not wanting to leave anything to chance. Of course there were the usual smalls but I won’t bother you with that. It’s a sartorial nightmare and one that was highlighted when a colleague commented on my wardrobe in a less than complimentary manner. I brushed it off at the time but later I started to think, is it time for me to break out the comfy corduroys and woolly cardigans? I sat on the edge of my bed and looked at the rack of shirts, the trousers in bright yellow and pink and the suit that Rupert Bear would not look out of place in. Memories of previous wardrobes came floating back – the Katharine Hamnett years, the body-map era, my long acquaintance with Paul Smith and a vast array of army surplus and vintage that would be the envy of so many Brighton clothing stores. It made me smile. Now where did I put those dungarees?

Royal Blood at the NME Awards; Zoe Ball geeks out; Adele’s stateside house hunt

dele’s neighbour, the lovely Zoe Ball, has this week announced that she has no intention of putting herself in the running for the presenter’s job on the primetime Strictly Come Dancing shows. Speaking to the Daily Express, Zoe said; “I like my job on It Takes Two, so I’m not gunning for Tess’s job or anything like that.” Zoe, who replaced Claudia on the BBC1 shows last series following her daughter’s hospital ordeal, joked that the main reason she wouldn’t want Tess or Claudia’s spot in the limelight is the hard work involved in tracking down dresses to wear on air for two shows a weekend. Zoe also revealed that as a self-styled ‘Strictly geek’ she is getting over-excited about hosting the Strictly Come Dancing live tour. The 31 show dance spectacular starring ex-contestants including Mark Wright, Simon Webbe, Alison Hammond, Scott Mills and Caroline Flack opened at The Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham last week.

SEASIDE, STATESIDE One beachfront pad clearly isn’t enough for singing sensation Adele. News reaches us that the multi-award winning singer/songwriter – who has a sea-facing home just outside Hove – has put in an offer on a gorgeous oceanfront mansion in Malibu, California. Adele, who denied rumours of a split from her partner and father of her two year old son, Simon Konecki, last month, is buying the posh Malibu pad as a “family home” in the States. Malibu is a 21mile strip of prime Pacific coastline, famous for its warm, sandy beaches and for being the home of many Hollywood movie stars. Just like Portslade, then. Whilst ice-cream is traditionally made with heavy cream and eggs, gelato is milk-based with fewer or no eggs, making it a healthier option with up to 50% less calories. It’s also about the air, or lack of it … during the churning process, less air is incorporated into the gelato mixture than with ice-cream, making for a smoother, creamier taste and a silky soft scoop. ART DECO IN BRIGHTON

Art Deco meets Vintage, Bauhaus and Art Nouveau, as Decofairs comes to Brighton’s Thistle Hotel

rt Deco is an influential visual arts design style which first appeared in France and Belgium after World War I, flourishing internationally in the 1930s and 1940s before its popularity waned after World War II. It is an eclectic style that combines ancient symbols and motifs with Machine Age imagery and materials. The style is often

characterized by rich colours, bold geometric shapes, and ornamentation. During its heyday, Art Deco represented luxury, glamour, exuberance and faith in social and technological progress. You may notice Art Deco is all round you in Brighton and Hove – from Shoreham Airport in the West to Embassy Court on Hove Seafront to Gala Bingo Hall on Portland Road to Saltdean’s Lido and the Grand Ocean complex in the East. Decofairs will continue to run six Sunday fairs this year, on 15 February, 26 April, 14 June, 9 August, 11 October and 13 December. Opening hours will remain 10am–4pm and will become the home of Art Deco in Brighton selling high quality collectibles. The central focus will always remain Art Deco but we

also include a small part of Vintage from 1850-1970, and other 20th century art styles such as Art Nouveau and Bauhaus. Decofairs is the perfect opportunity for Art Deco enthusiasts to browse and purchase high quality collectibles including period memorabilia, jewellery, ceramics, clothing and accessories, lighting and lamps, clocks, statuary, prints, glass and furniture. Traders have been known to sell a stylish list of famous designers of the era including Lalique, Clarice Cliffe, Susie Cooper, Mappin and Webb, Erte and Cartier. t’s hard not to like Sir Chris. Humble, unassuming, demure even. Yet over the course of his two hour talk/lecture it becomes evident that this man has done extraordinary things in the world of mountaineering. If there was a tick list of mountains to climb he’s pretty much ticked them all, and sometimes several times over. By its very nature, mountaineering is a struggle and sometimes humans come off second best, as was evident by the amount of colleagues he had lost over his many expeditions. That there weren’t more is minor miracle. It’s accepted but never down played by Sir Chris. Emotional, inspiring and a thoroughly decent bloke.

J MASCIS

It’s lucky I already know what J Mascis looks like. At 5ft 11, being able to see over a crowd is rarely an issue for me, but J Mascis fans obviously eat their greens as the stage was completely invisible from my handicapped vantage point towards the back of the room. The venue was filled to bursting; a sea of plaid and heavy knitwear beneath a fog of condensation – nobody had elbow-room enough to remove their coats and scarves, it seemed, and the venue’s climate had shifted from temperate to tropic as a result. Still, he sounded amazing. Heady, ethereal guitar over gravelly yet gentle falsetto. Imperfect, vulnerable, and beautiful. A departure from the visceral energy of Dinosaur Jr and Witch, and welcome for it. Rousing applause and a perfunctory encore (J Mascis is a modest man) testified to that. The Haunt, 9 January 2015 ★★★★★ Louise Bevan

WITHERING LOOKS

Essentially a ‘Bronte For Dummies’ or ‘Bitesize Bronte’ (copywrite pending!), as if the lives and works of The Brontes was performed by a mental offshoot of the Women’s Institute. But it’s good fun and deserved more of an audience. Performers Sue Ryding and Maggie Fox provided a true smorgasbord of storytelling and comic styles/vehicles; the ghosts of the Moors, Wuthering Heights reduced to a 30 second paper cut out show, Anne Bronte as a tiny hand puppet. Ludicrously eccentric but played very dryly to accentuate the humour. The biting satire gave it that little fizz too. Cleverly put together and performed to a sharp degree. Give it a go. he 2012 Premier Crus of Burgundy’s Chablis region are on the market now, their quality testament to the ever increasing amount of effort being put into the vineyards in this climatically marginal region. Even in a “not easy” vintage like 2012, then, great wine can still be made, particularly from biodynamic vineyards. The 2012s are particularly attractive because they’re drinking well now, but can also be laid down. In general, they are taught and tingling, lean and limey. The 2013 vintage was even harder than the 2012 – but it seems that patience may have been rewarded in 2014, which is looking highly promising. Yet go back 25 years or so, and wine producers in Burgundy’s core Cote d’Or, a limestone escarpment which stretches from Dijon to Santenay, held this satellite component part of the region in low regard, says Herve Tucki. Now, esteemed Burgundy names on the escarpment, like Faiveley, Drouhin and Bize, own vineyards in Chablis too. “But one thing doesn’t change,” Tucki says, “and that’s the terroir. We’re Kimmeridgian”. He refers, of course, to the unique clay and limestone rock formations of the Jurassic period, its key influence on the vines resulting in uniquely steely, mineral wines. Tucki is brand ambassador for cooperative La Chablisienne. This cooperative was the first to be formed in France (1923) and sells eight million bottles per year, which accounts for about one quarter of the region’s total production. But in spite of a large portfolio, La Chablisienne is highly respected, and produces terroir wines across 30 different crus, including six Grand Crus and 15 Premier Crus, the remainder spread across Chablis and Petit Chablis. It works with 300 vine-growing families across 20 villages. Unusually among coops, it is first a wine producer and not only interested in commercial success. Its wines offer tremendous value for the consumer in a region where prices are slowly creeping up.

000_LS713_interview - Josie Long_011_LS466_interview 22/01/2015 15:35 Page 1

Hi Josie, how are you today? Hi! I'm good thanks, hope you are too! Yes I am, thank you. ‘Cara Josephine’ is being touted as your most personal show to date. When I first found out I was going to be an aunt I immediately tried to move to a home that would allow my niece to visit – even though she hadn’t been born yet. What’s the most surprising thing the arrival of your niece has evoked in you? I just was not prepared for the visceral amount of love that I have for her. I just LOVE her so much that I don't know what to do with all of the feelings. It's wonderful. And that brings such an excitement about what she will grow into and what her life will be like. So I recommend it to everyone! You’ve mentioned your family in previous shows, more specifically your sister. What is

the best thing you’ve benefitted from by having your sister in your life? My sister and I are quite different, she's much more practical and nononsense than I am. I think we both like having someone so important in our lives with such a different perspective. I really look up to her, she's very brave and independent and a great mum. Also she can drive so she gives me lifts quite a lot if I go to Kent. #Everydaysexism, #illridewithyou and others seem to reflect a grassroots social media movement against the prejudice and aggression growing in a financially poorer society. Do you see this as part of a constant gathering of momentum for the positive, or a sad indictment of the current status quo? I don't really see them as either, I think. There

LONG FOR YOU

Multi-Edinburgh-award nominee, BBC Radio regular and delightful optimist Josie Long brings her latest and arguably most personal comedy show to Brighton. Victoria Nangle talks family, politics and vanity-searching yourself on the web

will always be things to fight and there will always be so many people doing good things to fight them and building things for the good. I try and take heart from the good things and hope to do what I can, if that doesn't sound too wanky. I think saying that society is building wholeheartedly towards progress or falling into the abyss isn't helpful either way, because there is always so bloody much going on! The online stuff has been great though. Comedians usually comment upon injustice or lack of opportunities – whereas you have actually addressed these with the establishment of the Arts Emergency Services. Such a great thing to exist. How difficult was it to set up and publicise? Thank you! It wasn't difficult. Although it's been hard work, it's been one of the most rewarding and awesome things I've ever been involved with. It's all really down to Neil the co-founder who works incredibly hard to build it up. It exists to help young people study and pursue lives spent doing what they'd love to do, and to defend studying and making arts of all kinds. I think we have been lucky because so many people have identified with the cause and given us support. You’ve collected rave reviews for many years now, yet very much give the impression of marching to the tune of your own drum. How important are reviews to you, and – to butcher a quote – are some reviews more equal than others? I don't read reviews because I think they can get in your head, and, even if they are good ones, they can confuse you as to what you're doing and why. I am always a bit wary about asking for feedback – I tend to only ask a few people who I really trust. I think stand-up can make you a bit of a control freak – you sort of develop your own internal voice that tells you what to keep in or take out and I find reviews can muddy that judgement. Having said that, it's really lovely if people like what I do and there are some reviewers I really respect so I'm chuffed if they like my stuff. Family has moved to front and centre in this show, along with heartbreak. If you could give Josie from ten years ago a piece of advice, what would it be? Oh god. It would be ... be less cagey about saying yes to things and never vanity-search your own name on the internet! And what do you hope for the Josie of ten years in the future? I just hope that I am happy and hopeful and all of that hippy nonsense. My dream is to make some films and write better stand-up shows each time. What’s the next thing you’re looking forward to doing? I'm hoping to make a feature film in the summer. I've spent the last 18 months developing the script and now hopefully we will be able to get the money and make it happen. ew Venture Theatre’s production of The Private Ear & Black Comedy is a double bill of classic 1960s comedy by Sir Peter Shaffer, and runs from 20 – 28 February 2015. The award-winning playwright is famous for such plays and adaptations as Amadeus and Equus. The Private Ear & Black Comedy are two hilarious plays which form a natural pair, each hinging in turn on the importance of sound and light. The Private Ear, directed by Dan Walker, is a play of socially awkward comedy. Classical musical enthusiast Bob has a big date with Doreen, the Perfect Woman. Not knowing much about entertaining, he has invited ladies’ man Ted along to act as cook and moral support – an unusual move to be sure. What could possibly go wrong? Black Comedy is directed (appropriately) by Ian Black. Brindsley is a poor sculptor who hopes to sell some of his work to a millionaire art collector; he also intends to ask his fiancée Carol’s father for her hand in marriage. He has borrowed, without permission, some of his neighbour’s antique furniture in an attempt to impress. The evening is set, but is marred by some unexpected visitors. It was a seasonal hit for the Theatre Royal Brighton – catch One Man, Two Guvnors whilst you still can ... hen it comes to local theatre, it’s not all about looking forward to the next big thing; sometimes it’s about taking time to look back and appreciate an unprecedented success. We’ve one show in paticular in mind – One Man, Two Guvnors was a resounding seasonal hit for the Theatre Royal Brighton. The venue is celebrating one of its most successful Christmas seasons ever, with the announcement that almost 18,000 people saw the Theatre’s Christmas show, the National Theatre’s production of One Man, Two Guvnors throughout the recent three week run, which ended last weekend. Over a third of the audience were attending the Theatre for the first time. One Man, Two Guvnors played to packed houses throughout the run, winning praise from audiences and rave reviews from critics. Nicholas Hytner’s five star production, which is set in Brighton in the 1960s, tells the hilarious story of Francis Henshall who, fired from his skiffle band, becomes minder to

Roscoe Crabbe. But ‘Roscoe’ is really ‘Rachel’, posing as her own dead brother – who's been killed by her boyfriend Stanley Stubbers. Francis spots the chance of an extra meal ticket and takes a job with one Stanley Stubbers – but to prevent discovery, he must keep his two guvnors apart. One Man, Two Guvnors continued the Theatre Royal Brighton’s tradition of staging a top West End show at Christmas. Recent productions have included Priscilla Queen of the Desert, The Rocky Horror Show and Spamalot. Chris Harper, Managing Director of National Theatre Productions, commented: “One Man, Two Guvnors is set in Brighton, which made it the

AND THE AWARD GOES TO ...

IT TAKES TWO met the Dane at work. And it was always inevitable that the partnership of an editor with an art director would give birth to our own publishing enterprise – albeit in our spare time. Now you might expect that two creative types living and working together would be the recipe for tantrums and tiffs. But it’s all pretty harmonious, chez Krog … well, as long as I get my own way and Torben keeps his Scandi mitts – and grammar – off the Arty Twitter feed. So we’re always interested to see the results of other creative couplings. And in this year’s book – Brighton’s Artists 2015 – we’re thrilled to be featuring again the paintings of Jo Watters-Pawlowski and for the first time Kris Pawlowski Kris Pawlowski’s captivating photography. The underlying force behind Jo’s paintings is ‘abstract expressionism’ as she plays with the figurative elements of landscapes and seascapes to create an emotional, abstract response. Her aim is to evoke a reaction, rather than depict a scene, with each artwork carefully built up layer by layer using oil, acrylics and resist-work techniques that lend a spectacular intensity to the end results. In contrast – and firmly rooted in reality – Kris has a passion for photographing artists, craftsmen and musicians. His style is simple, as he aims to capture his subjects in a relaxed and informal way. Both utterly brilliant in their own unique ways! Out of town: Pelham House Hotel is holding its first Open Art Exhibition, with all works chosen by the staff at the hotel. More than 90 submissions were received from artists from Lewes and surrounding areas, and the final selection includes a wonderfully high standard of various styles and mediums, including prints, oils, acrylics, photographic prints, collage and mixed media. A percentage of all sales will be donated to the Rocking Horse Appeal. The exhibition runs until 24 February. www.artymagazines.com

his year’s Oscar nominations are out and, while a little predictable in some respects, there are also a few surprises. Let’s talk about four films we have reviewed on PostFeature and how they fared in the race for nominations: Foxcatcher is one of the most ‘Oscar-buzzy’ of the year! Especially since it includes Steve Carell’s prosthetic-heavy characterization of the psychopathic wrestling enthusiast John Dupont. A straight performance by a comedian in a role that is anything but likeable (and preferably involves an aesthetic change) is always likely to get awards – one need only think of Mo’Nique’s Oscar for 2009’s Precious. Personally, however, I’m sad that Carell was included in the ‘Lead Actor’ category in place of Channing Tatum, who really did act his socks off and has come on so far since his Step Up days! If you managed to catch PostFeature last week or have seen it on our catch up service, you’ll know exactly how I feel about American Sniper. Content and storytelling aside it is certainly a wonderfully directed and beautifully shot film, so not surprising to see it also in the ‘Best Picture’ category – and obviously half of the American political divide agrees with the source material. Interesting to note that staunch Republican Clint Eastwood is not up for ‘Best Director’, however … Nightcrawler was creepy and awful. In a very, very good way. Jake Gyllenhaal’s performance as the desperate, immoral sociopath who blurs the line between observer and participant in this tale of sleazy nighttime news-gathering was stunning. There was a lack of vanity in making himself over as being so utterly unlikable, and an artistry in his inhabiting a character able to make the hairs on the back of an audience’s necks raise from the other side of a screen. And yet, no ‘Lead Actor’ nomination! The only nomination for Nightcrawler was ‘Best Original Screenplay’ – not even the fabulous Rene Russo got a nod in the ‘Supporting Actress’ category. In another nominations shocker, Gone Girl, the film that for a few months at the end of the summer had everyone talking (and every couple over a certain age rushing to see it, don’t ask me why) also received just the one nomination. David Fincher’s pitch-black blockbuster only managed to see Rosamund Pike put into the ‘Best Actress’ category and was utterly excluded from many categories it could have sat comfortably in, including ‘Best Picture’, ‘Best Director’ and ‘Best Cinematography’. I feel most aggrieved for poor Gillian Flynn who expertly adapted her own best selling novel. Will the right awards go to the right people? COMEDY Victoria Nangle

FUNNY BONES The hard work that’s gone in to make comedy so ‘effortless’...

Y

ears ago someone told me; “A dirty mind is a joy forever.” I would like to subvert that to simply, “A funny mind is a joy forever.” Anyone who has ever seen a top comedian’s work-in-progress will know the marvel that is a funny and well-toned mind feeling their way to the gags, and the delight at the discovery of a brand new funny – most especially in a place they never thought to find it. Some people are blessed that every show has them seemingly stumbling upon comedy gold as frequently as those who first started the myth that London’s streets were made of the shiny stuff. Those shows are just magic bubbles in time where the imagination is unleashed, and are not to be missed. One’s coming to town this weekend. Ross Noble is great. The title of his show says it all – ‘Tangentleman’. With a loose idea of where he’s going thematically at the start of the night, and a willingness to abandon the map completely should another more interesting adventure present itself, the natural creativity and bare loopiness is a joy to behold. And he’s not alone with this gift. April sees the marvellous Dylan Moran come to town who, upon a previous visit, had me in hysterics when his random ambling gait saw him hit with a sudden realisation that his feet had been slipping slowly apart sideways with the weight of his body and his torso had fallen so low he was going to have difficulty righting himself. A

total tangent that simply presented itself and took over a good 20 minutes of show time. Dara O’Briain (playing at Eastbourne’s Congress Theatre in May) also gives the impression at his live shows that everything he’s serving up is coming straight from you, as he banters with the audience and reacts directly to them. Comedian Dan Antopolski once told me about the exercising of the comedy muscle. It’s something every professional comedian works on and sharpens. If you don’t write and perform regularly it gets saggy from lack of use, but a truly toned comedy muscle sees the punchlines wherever they might present themselves and acts accordingly. This is why truly good comperes, like Krater’s Stephen Grant, are so compelling. There is that danger that anything can happen and still be made funny, still be a part of the show. And it can. Because a good comedy brain can see it. So, in conclusion, if you want to see magic in words and free your mind with laughter, there are some great shows to go and see to do just that. There’s a reason some people are said to be at the top of their game. These are the comedy marathon runners. ALICE RUSSELL A veritable force of nature, Brighton’s queen of funk and soul is back in action after taking some time out with her new baby, with a string of dates here and abroad ...

M

oving to Brighton in the mid ‘90s to study art and music, Alice Russell initially made her mark as a guest singer with the likes of Quantic Soul Orchestra, and Nostalgia 77 (their cover of The White Stripes’ ‘Seven Nation Army’ has been constantly rinsed in clubs around the world). She then teamed up with co-writer, guitarist and producer Alex Cowan (aka ™ Duke) for her debut studio album My Favourite Letters, released in 2005 on the Brighton-based Tru Thoughts label.

Russell and Cowan continue to collaborate to this day: “We both like so many different types of music, whereas some people are more purist. Our influences run from Sarah Vaughan to Bach, Kate Bush to Arvo Part, and J Dilla to Alice Coltrane. We love everything from dirty, squelchy dubstep to old school soul. We nudge each other in the right directions,” says Alice. Subsequently, she’s released Pot of Gold, and To Dust, arguably her best album to date, which featured a fantastic performance by Harry Shearer (This Is Spinal Tap, The Simpsons etc) for the promotional video to the ‘Heartbreaker’ single.

Constantly collaborating, she released an album with her old friends Quantic (Will Holland) in 2012, and also contributed a vocal to ‘Men Will Do Anything’, a track on the David Byrne and Fatboy Slim album Here Lies Love. Live, though, is where you can witness the power and skill of her voice, where she can really let go: “It’s a great emotional release … sometimes it makes you feel really high, especially when you’re singing the high notes. If you’re feeling rubbish and everything else feels like it’s going wrong, you feel better if you have a good singsong. I’ve sung my way through panic attacks before – singing through the whole of Stevie Wonder’s Songs In The Key Of Life. They should put singing on the NHS!” The next gig is in aid of Gig Buddies, a project that enables socially isolated people with learning disabilities to lead active social lives, matching them with a volunteer who enjoys the same kind of music. The bill also includes The Nextmen, Beat Express and Pog. Concorde 2, Sunday 1 Feb, 7.30pm, £10

But back in 1774, Joseph Priestley, after warming nitre – potassium nitrate – described what we now know to be oxygen in the following way: “The feeling of it in my lungs was not sensibly different from that of common air, but I fancied that my breast felt peculiarly light and easy for some time afterwards. Who can tell but that in time, this pure air may become a fashionable article in luxury. Hitherto only two mice and myself have had the privilege of breathing it.” Here at the STEM centre, we are working on a very exciting project with Dr Kate Howland from the University of Sussex, and with her MSc students. WEDNESDAY 28 The Vote Latest TV, 8pm With national elections on the horizon, controversy hanging over the Green’s inclusion – or lack thereof – in the TV leaders’ debates being scheduled in the future, it’s a good thing Frank Le Duc is on hand to chair our own debates. Covering local and national politics, key issues and more.

Wolf Hall BBC2, 9pm And we thought current politics was Machiavellian! Cardinal Wolsey on the ropes, forced out of court to travel north to his archdiocese in York. Makes an archdiocese sound like a dry cave. Funnily enough, it’s Cromwell’s loyalty to the cardinal that sees the king notice and become fond of him.

FILM: The Wizard Of Oz Film4, 4.50pm Grab a duvet day and tuck yourself in on the sofa with this little treat. Judy Garland straps herself down and in when her house is lifted up by a tornado and plops it down slap bang in the adventure she’s been longing for (and singing about). Good thing she’s got good pals to meet on the way!

FRIDAY 30 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown Channel 4, 9pm The words and numbers show is packed full of people we love. Not only is there Crawley’s finest and Komedia regular Romesh Ranganathan (former maths teacher, should be good with numbers), but also Brighton local Joe Wilkinson and this week’s interviewee Josie Long. Bosh!

Modern Toss Latest TV, 10pm Recognised nationally as the leading light in mickey-taking and humour, recognised locally as ‘that brilliant shop in the North Laine’, Modern Toss bring their irreverent and surreal animations to Friday night. Our own boundary-breaking cartoonists, with lots of swearing and silliness to boot.

Marry Me E4, 8.30pm It’s Halloween in Americansitcom-land, and Annie and Jake come up with the cunning wheeze of converting their flat into a haunted house to entertain the local kids. Now, isn’t that neighbourly? Not really, when grown up neighbour Julie is none too impressed with the whole idea and gets her grump on.
