EDITOR’S NOTE
“
The best moments in reading are when you come across something – a thought, a feeling, a way of looking at things – that you'd thought special, particular to you. And here it is, set down by someone else, a person you've never met, maybe even someone long dead. And it's as if a hand has come out, and taken yours.” Oh, Alan! Alan Bennett that is. Comedic escapades and anarchic youth aside, The History Boys is littered with little philosophical gems like the one above, proving once again that there’s something for every audience member, from the deviant to the discerning. Have you seen it yet? The Theatre Royal Brighton are staging this awesome production for a week-long run in February, see page 17 for more details.
And don’t say we never give you anything (you wouldn’t, would you?) because we have a bumper competition giveaway this week; not only two DVD titles, but brand spanking new copies of QueenSpark Books latest compendium, Brighton Trans*formed. Celebrating the transgender community of Brighton & Hove, this collection of stories, pictures and recollections shows how far the storytellers have come, and just as importantly how far there is left to go. See page 12 for how to win yourself a copy. As winter trundles on, let’s make the most of frosty February. May the crisp air and sunshine illuminate our city by the sea; there’s much to do and much to enjoy. Rockinghorse at Downing Street; Duke Of Edinburgh’s Awards; Launch of Land Rover Discovery Sport
CHARITY CHIEF VISITS DOWNING STREET The Chief Executive of a local children’s charity has spoken of his delight at visiting 10 Downing Street. Ryan Heal, CEO at Rockinghorse Children’s Charity, was invited by Simon Kirby, Member of Parliament for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven, to a private reception at the official residence and office of the Prime Minister to meet with Samantha Cameron. They were joined by Danny Dwyer, fundraiser for the Sussex Beacon, who also represented Brighton as a charity champion at the reception last week. Samantha Cameron commented: “It was a privilege to meet Ryan from Rockinghorse. Their amazing work is changing Danny Dwyer, Simon Kirby, Ryan Heal the lives of individuals outside 10 Downing Street and families across Brighton and beyond and it was an honour to celebrate their work.” Rockinghorse is the official fundraising arm of the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton, and a vital supporter of the Trevor Mann Baby Unit, based within the Royal Sussex County Hospital. The charity raises money for life-saving and cutting-edge medical equipment, whilst ensuring that children are treated in an environment better suited to their needs. Ryan Heal said of the trip: “Visiting 10 Downing Street was an incredible experience. It was an honour to represent the Rockinghorse team and we’re very grateful to Simon Kirby MP for the invitation.” To find out more about the work of Ryan Heal, Simon Kirby, Danny Rockinghorse Children’s Charity, visit Dwyer outside The Houses of www.rockinghorse.org.uk Parliament

300 YOUNG BRIGHTONIANS GAIN DUKE OF EDINBURGH’S AWARDS More than 300 young people in Brighton & Hove are due to receive their Duke of Edinburgh’s (DofE) Awards this year at a presentation ceremony on Wednesday 4 February at the AMEX stadium. The DofE scheme is coordinated by Brighton & Hove City Council’s outdoor education team, which is currently working with more than 2,000 young people looking to enhance their skills and improve their employability. Activities undertaken by young people on the programme this year have included: • Woodland conservation, fundraising for African children and beach litter clearing in the ‘volunteering’ section • Kick boxing, bouldering, zumba and sailing for ‘physical activities’ work • Dog handling, car mechanics, power boating and learning languages such as Polish and Japanese for the ‘skills’ section. The Amex event will be hosted solely by DofE participants, including two students from Hamilton Lodge School for the Deaf, Paighton Gibson and Olly Chettle, with the support of interpreters. Learning to communicate with team members who have hearing was a key task for Paighton and Olly during their three-day expedition in the North Downs. During the expedition the team tackled map reading, 12 mile hikes each day, cooking on a trangia stove and tent pitching. Both boys felt they’d grown in confidence after teaching their four fellow team members some basic sign language. Paighton said: “It was a real challenge to be with hearing people, without an interpreter, and is something I feel will be really useful in future.” Olly added: “I now realise it doesn’t matter whether you’re deaf or have hearing, we all have different skills we can bring to a situation. I was the best map reader so they relied on me, but of course that meant that if we got lost, it was my fault!” The Bronze, Silver and Gold awards will be presented by the Lord Lieutenant for East Sussex, Peter Field, who is himself a Brighton resident. If you’d like to know more about the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards scheme in Brighton & Hove please contact Rachel Paget on 01273 294234 or 07827 880759.

CELEBRITIES TURN OUT FOR LEWES LAND ROVER LAUNCH Over 300 people turned out at Caffyns Land Rover in Lewes for the launch of the New Land Rover Discovery Sport. The launch event, held on Thursday 22 January, served champagne and canapés and attracted a number of familiar faces, including former England Rugby Captain Phil Vickery, actors Julie Graham and Carol Harrison, artist Julie-Anne Gilburt – who produced the angelic figure on the famous Fat Boy Slim greatest hits album – and Brighton & Hove Albion footballers Gordon Greer, Andrew Crofts and Craig Mickail-Smith from BAHFC. The evening was hosted by Juice FM radio presenter Ambrose Harcourt. Caffyns, who are celebrating their 150th year, used the launch to support two charities for the evening: Wooden Spoon, dedicated to helping disadvantaged young people through sport, and Chestnut Tree House, the only children’s Hospice in Sussex looking after over 300 children with life limiting illnesses and their families. Steve Tester, General Sales Manager for the dealership in Lewes, said; “There was such a buzz tonight. Thanks to everyone who came, and we hope you come back again for a test drive!” For more information on the new Land Rover Discovery Sport, contact Caffyns Land Rover on 01273 473186 www.caffyns.lewes.landrover.co.uk

Brighton and Hove City Council leader Jason Kitcat In recent months the council, supported by independent experts, has been rethinking how it supports people with learning disabilities. Two major reviews have been run, one focused on our services for children and the other on those for adults. These are hugely complex and sensitive areas. There is certainly no ‘one size fits all’ solution for the diversity of needs we see amongst citizens. For children there is also the importance of connecting support with schooling. Both reviews have come back with a powerful focus on putting the needs of our service users first, which is what you would expect. But what the reviews found is that while we have some excellent staff providing brilliant services, they aren’t always as joined up as they could be, nor are they always keeping up with people’s changing needs. For example many parents told us of their frustration with the number of times they had to tell ‘their story’ to professionals, and the number of different places they had to go to access support. So we are setting a goal to bring together much more of these services into combined hubs alongside our special schools. This will deliver better, more integrated care for young people with learning disabilities. For adults we are seeking to put greater emphasis on ‘personalisation’, which means letting them choose what they want to spend their budget on, rather than being placed in services we already offer. We must avoid paternalism and, wherever possible, meet the aspirations we heard in the review of travelling and working in the city like everyone else. These ambitions will take some time to achieve fully, but my hope is that partners across the city will agree them as our goals at a special meeting on 3 February. Accident and Emergency departments have come to symbolise many of the challenges being faced across the NHS
Matthew Kershaw
W
hen the spotlight shines on the NHS, more often than not it shines on A&E – the Accident and Emergency Department. It sometimes seems to symbolise not just the hospital but the health of the NHS as a whole. It’s certainly a place where patients and their friends and relatives experience hope and despair. And the same can be true for the medical staff battling what must often seem like overwhelming odds. Yet, some of our worst moments are their routine. While patients can cherish recovery, for the medics the next cases are already waiting. In Brighton an A&E consultant, Rob Galloway, recently shared his heartfelt thoughts on Facebook. Not versed in the ways of the media, the ensuing publicity must have come as quite a shock. He has
resisted the lure – if lure is the right word – of furthering his 15 minutes of fame. Instead he has kept his head down and got on with the job of mending broken bodies. The man in charge of the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Matthew Kershaw, is not unaware of the issues faced by the team in A&E. He took the top job at the hospital trust – Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust – as the emergency role was expanding. The Royal Sussex is the main trauma centre for a much wider area than Brighton and Hove. He is also wrestling with the challenges of bringing the neurosurgeons who are currently based at the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath on to the Kemp Town site of the Royal Sussex. This will ensure that more people with complex injuries, such as those who have been in a
Too few patients know where to turn when their doctor’s surgery is closed car crash, can be treated near their home. At the moment, many are flown to hospitals in London such as St George’s in Tooting. Also, some patients are stabilised at the Royal Sussex and treated for injuries to their bodies before being sent to Haywards Heath to have their head injuries dealt
with. This will change for the better. There is, though, finite space on the current site in Brighton. And preparations are under way for the £420 million modernisation of the Royal Sussex. The Chancellor George Osborne came to the hospital to announce the news in person. He is expected to give his final sign-off soon. Another challenge faced by the Royal Sussex – and hospitals elsewhere – has been the relentless rise in the number of patients arriving at A&E. Many should be treated elsewhere as their problems are neither accidents nor emergencies. Some have pinpointed the government’s 2004 contract with GPs – family doctors – as a cause. It ended the old out of hours arrangements. Too few patients know where to turn when their doctor’s surgery is closed. The walk-in centre in Queen’s Road, a few doors down from Brighton Station, has soaked up many extra cases. A similar facility by A&E could help. But these things cost money at a time of public spending constraints. Even so, most are cheaper than A&E. Mr Kershaw knows that the queue at the front door is one part of the equation. The flow from A&E – having beds free on the wards – is another challenge. Linked to this is the flow out of hospital once patients are fit for discharge. Here, Mr Kershaw and his staff depend on others being able to take patients who may be medically fit but need more general care – the old and frail, for example. Changes to working patterns in the adult social care team at Brighton and Hove City Council are taking place. Those changes should help. And Sussex Community Trust – the local NHS trust responsible for community nursing – is under pressure to keep up with rising demand. It’s not just the numbers. As we live longer, those who end up in hospital seem to be older, have more complex problems and may not heal as quickly. A&E is unlikely to be empty any time soon. Matthew Kershaw talks more about A&E and the challenges facing staff at the Royal Sussex on The Vote on Latest TV tonight (Tuesday) and tomorrow (Wednesday) at 8pm.

RNLI They are the unsung heroes of the sea. But recently Latest TV had the privilege of meeting some of the volunteers that man the RNLI lifeboats in Brighton. To watch a full length feature, head over to www.thelatest.tv. LIDO SUCCESS It was a week of celebration for those involved in the campaign to save the Saltdean Lido. Parts of the Grade II* listed art deco attraction have been out of use for nearly a decade. But following a successful campaign, a group led by a bunch of committed locals has got the keys to the place – and now they've been awarded more than £2 million to bring it back into use. With plans for a heated swimming pool and plenty of community facilities, this is sure to be a popular place when it opens next year. It was also good news over in Worthing as they received £245,000 to establish a Creative Hub in Colonnade House for the benefit of local cultural entrepreneurs. Some may question the awarding of the cash in Conservative-controlled seats just a few months out from the election. But those who will benefit really don't seem to mind. ON THE RISE Domestic abuse cases in Brighton and Hove are on the rise. In the past year, nearly 4,000 incidents were reported across the city. So what is behind the increase?
Watch Latest News on
Well after speaking to Gail Grey, Chief Executive of domestic abuse charity Rise, it's clear that one of the reasons is that reporting incidents is on the increase. This is in part due to political will, with all parties and police chiefs locally recognising the need to tackle this issue. With funding cuts bound to affect these support services as well as others, there will be calls to ensure that enough money remains in the pot to cope with the increased demand. LIVING IN FEAR Events of recent weeks have heightened tensions between Islamic and western states. But what about those muslims who live locally? What impact has this heightened state had on their daily lives? According to Imam Idris Nawab, many of his friends are living in fear. Speaking to Latest TV's Mike Mendoza, he described how during a recent visit to a gym someone asked him if he was working out to train for Isis. To see the full interview, tune in to www.thelatest.tv. WAGE WAR A Worthing butcher made an appearance in the Houses of Parliament this week. The reason? Well he was named and shamed by ministers for being one of a handful of firms not to pay the living wage. The owner of Shannons, in South Street, Tarring, did not want to speak to Latest about the issue. But jumping to his defence was local MP Sir Peter Bottomley, who said it was the result of a misunderstanding. Still, it did raise the issue: what is a fair price for a full day’s work? With the living wage campaign in full swing in Brighton and Hove, it seems that the days of even paying the minimum wage – never mind below it – are well and truly gone.
PROPERTY PREMIUM The most expensive property in Brighton and Hove's history has gone on the market. 26 Lewes Crescent is listed by agents Brand Vaughan at a mammoth £4.25 million. According to the ad, the Grade Ilisted, five-storey mansion has been renovated to bring the Georgian masterpiece into the 21st century. Among the perks are iPadcontrolled lighting, a steam room, built-in coffee machines and electronically operated rainsensitive windows. Chuck in the minute's walk to the sea through a private garden which inspired Alice and Wonderland and agents are hopeful they will find a buyer. But with a massive housing shortage in the city generally, is it yet further proof that the divide between the haves and have-nots is bigger than ever before. SAYING GOODBYE The city said goodbye to one of its heroes last week. Bernard Jordan came to fame when he performed his own Great Escape from his Hove care home to attend the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings. The former Hove mayor was held up as an example to all in determination and doing what you think is right. His funeral was held last week and dignitaries from across the city attended to give him the send off he deserved. SEEDY SUNDAY Keen green-fingered enthusiasts packed Brighton's Corn Exchange this weekend for Seedy Sunday. It has become the UK's biggest and longest-running community seed swap event – so even if you don't like gardening it's well worth a visit. With 60 stalls, this year was perhaps the best ever. And we caught up with organiser Steve Bustin, who told Latest TV why it was such a special part of the city's calendar.

This could become problematic, as I live to dance, but only if it is very late in the night. The Japan also have more pets than they do children. Again this is going to be a problem. I often like to dance with pets, especially when it gets quite late into the night. So late in fact that one could accurately describe the act as ‘Late Night Dancing’. They have the most efficient trains in the world with delays never exceeding the 18 second mark. And due to Japan’s low birth rate, the sale of adult diapers exceeds that of children’s. Personally, I blame all those sumo wrestlers. They have ‘cat cafés’, which are – well the clue’s in the name. It’s a café with cats. Coffee, soya milk and cats. Free wi-fi, overly priced sandwiches and cats. You know what they say; when the cat’s away ... how did that saying go? Ah yes. When the cat’s away, you no longer have to keep an eye on your coffee, croissant and iphone. KFC is a typical Christmas eve treat amongst the Japanese, Ronald McDonald is called Donald McDonald and of course they have a festival celebrating fertility and the penis. Sadly this is not happening whilst I am away. I have booked for next year, though. Safe to say, Japan is going to be very different. But different is amazing. Travelling through life doing the same things over and over will only ever lead to ignorance and unhappiness. They are people that have found themselves in the spotlight, to varying degrees of success, who have had special privileges and have had people look up to them and adore them, at their career height (even Kavana). But then of course, fame, like relationships and everything else in life, moves on to the next big thing and you’re sat there saying, ‘remember me?’ Work dries up, what you thought may last forever is suddenly gone and it’s back to Plan B. A NEW BOUTIQUE HOSTEL FOR BRIGHTON Making a weekend of it ... y wife’s birthday falls in that strange no man’s land between December and January where everyone is already away for Christmas, has spent all of their money on presents or is all partied out. It means her birthday is always eclipsed. But this year I had a plan to change that. In the summer, she had (not so quietly) been hinting at a weekend away in Brighton. And being the kind, loving husband she’d always dreamt of, I decided to make it happen for her birthday. I started by trawling through the internet, but after about 10 minutes I’d already seen too many options; cheap but not so cheerful B&Bs and well-over-budget hotels. I needed some expert advice, so I called my mate who used to live in Sussex. He mentioned that YHA had just opened a brand new boutique hostel in Brighton. My first reaction was; ‘a youth hostel?’ All I could think about were communal

rooms, shared bathrooms and having to cook my own breakfast. But he swore by it, saying he had stayed in them all over England and Wales, from a castle in the Forest of Dean to a Shepherd’s Bothy at the foot of Snowdon – just for your information, a Shepherd’s Bothy is a shelter that shepherds use while tending their flocks. Don’t worry, he had to explain that to me too.
advertisement And because it would be my head and marriage on the line and not his, I had to do a little research of my own into YHA Brighton. In no time, I had found that not only is it right in the heart of the city, (literally a two minute walk from the pier, beach and Brighton Wheel) but also that it’s a recently refurbished Grade II listed Georgian townhouse. It sounded perfect. Plus, it had a café bar and free Wi-Fi. That would keep my kids happy (the Wi-Fi, not the bar!). They offered a variety of rooms too. I, obviously, wanted it to be special for my wife and score as many brownie points as possible, so I ruled out booking beds in a dorm room.
Although, I’ll keep it in mind for the future for me and my mates. The premium room sounded lovely. The king sized bed, the roll top bath and the sea views. It’s a shame it didn’t sleep four as my wife would have loved it, but I’ll definitely put that on the back burner for a time without our kids. In the end, I booked one night in the en-suite family room with a double bed and bunk beds, perfect for my son and daughter to clamber around on. All this for a tidy £75. (Almost as cheap as the train tickets.) My wife was completely blown away by the place, I don’t think she thought I was capable of finding such a perfect present! I really have outdone myself. Of course, now Valentine’s Day is coming up, and I have to work out what to get her. Back to the internet it is. Might have to give my mate another call …” YHA Brighton, your new boutique hostel yha.org.uk/brighton

BARE CHEEK Brian Mitchell and Joseph Nixon’s thoroughly scurrilous Brighton column
CONSPIRACY TIME WITH BARE CHEEK'S RESIDENT CONSPIRACY THEORIST, COLUMBO SPENCER. Wassup sheeple!? I'm sure there are those of you who would like to believe that the world is a simple, uncomplicated place, full of acts of nature and accidents. Two words, sheeple – Absolute. Blooming. Nonsense. There are no accidents. Everything is controlled from behind the scenes by a shadowy cabal comprised of ... but I've said too much. To say more would be endangering your lives. Instead, here are a few snippets from my conspiracies file. Remember that helicopter crash Mike Smith was in? It was a bomb that caused that. And who do you think planted it? Let me give you a clue, guys and gals, now then, now then ughhhughhhh. That's right, it was Bernard Manning. Why? Smitty was about to reveal to his Radio 1 audience that all of Manning's jokes were secretly written by none other than former Archbishop of Canterbury Robert Runcie. You know that ice bucket challenge thing that was all the rage in social media some time ago? A lovely, harmless bit of fun to help charity I suppose you'd think. Well, you'd be wrong. Actually it was all about baptising unwitting dupes into the church of Satan, and who was behind all this? Step forward our old friends the Illuminati. The moon? It's a laser projection, friends. That's why nobody was able to land there, and NASA had to have Stan Kubrick film all those fake moon landings he
alluded to in The Shining. And guess what? The laser projection was accidentally turned off for eleven minutes between 3.04 AM and 3.15 AM on 12th August 1979. The only people to witness this were John Lennon, Lady Diana Spencer, and Whitney Houston, all of whom died in suspicious circumstances. Coincidence? I think not. 1963 – JFK assassinated. 1968 – RFK assassinated. “R” is eight letters after “J” in the alphabet, which leads me to believe that a Kennedy with the initials “ZFK” will be assassinated at some point in the future. The assassin will only have one name (following from Lee Harvey Oswald who had three and Sirhan Sirhan who had two) Which one-named person will it be? Madonna? Pele? Cher? Enya? We shall have to wait and see. You want to know the real reason for the Invasion of Iraq? Weapons of mass destruction? Nope. Not even close. The real reason was that Saddam had a stargate. Yup, a stargate, just like in the movie Stargate. And the television series Stargate. Scientists had built it for the dictator and he was about to use it to sell the earth to insectile aliens from another dimension. Well the New World Order couldn't let that happen could they? So they got George W.Bush and Tony B. Liar to close him down. What happened to the stargate? That would be telling. Right, I'd best be off. See you next week, when I'll be explaining how World War 1 didn't happen, and demonstrating the hidden link between Dustin Gee, Kim Jong Un, and Hurricane Katrina. Keep a look out for the black helicopters, C.S. X
What We Used To Say An occasional series in which we struggle to remember the once common, simple words or phrases that have been replaced by ugly, overblown neologisms. WHAT WE SAY NOW: Wealth Creators When we were growing up, we were taught that propaganda was a cynical tool used exclusively by communist states. But it turns out that this itself was propaganda, for there can be no more blatant example of it than the phrase that forms our topic today. It joins “Hard-working People” and “State Handouts” amongst the lexicon of lies employed by our governing class. WHAT WE USED TO SAY: Businessmen, Tradesmen, Industrialists, Employers, Capitalists, Exploiters.

I
’m back, well at least for now. My recent international jet-setter status is on hold until the next trip to film International Chef Exchange, which, all being well, is to Dubai. Vancouver turned out be be an extraordinary experience, not least because I spent 36 hours in bed with a stinker of a cold. Fortunately though I had booked extra leisure time in the city which I took full advantage of before the virus felled me. I was joined by my friend Mr M after a few days. He had flown out using a different route and his body clock was set differently from mine. Which is why he texted me at 6am to say that he was up and ready to go. Given that his hotel was a good 45 minutes’ walk from mine, it gave me a chance to shower and dress and at 6.45am I was in reception. It was not the most promising of
A FOGGY DAY
The perils of sight-seeing in a cold climate days with thick fog cloaking most of the city and on Granville it looked pretty bleak. We climbed in a cab and headed out of town to a drab area where we had been told we would find the very best diner in town, Red Wagon – and at 7am we did, which was rather a pity as it did not open until 8am. Fortunately we found a Thai diner where we were able to have a coffee and I did a phone interview with Alison Ferns at BBC Radio Sussex. The owners were very impressed by that, especially as I name-checked them. At eight we moved to Red Wagon. Now as diners go it was pretty ordinary to look at, but this was not my purpose. My purpose was to try the special, a stack of buttermilk pancakes layered with pulled pork and topped with lashings of Jack Daniels spiked maple syrup. For breakfast! It was good, very good, but perhaps a bit heavy at 8am. Still this is all about experiences – and this was a good one. After that we took a cab back downtown and it was then that we saw the true splendour of Vancouver, as clouds poured into the city over the mountains like custard pouring over steamed pudding. It was more than impressive, it was breathtaking. Once downtown we swapped to a
Clouds poured into the city over the mountains like custard pouring over steamed pudding vintage tour bus and headed off to see the city with a guide. Sadly for her, the fog was hampering her usual tour as so much of what she would have liked to point out was shrouded in mist. She did her very best, resorting to pointing out a municipal maintenance yard when the rose gardens were not visible and a ‘heritage’ building that
boasted The Duke of Edinburgh and Prince Andrew amongst its most esteemed members – yes I know, we smiled a lot at that. And finally she introduced us to a new word – ‘heritageness’. I cannot wait to bring that one into play.

GET FRESH Vancouver strikes a happy note for any food lover nternational travel has become a major part of my life over the last few years and many readers have told me that they enjoy hearing about the culinary experiences that I have whilst abroad. For those who find them frustrating, I apologise – but I do feel that reporting back on what happens in the places that I visit has a value and it certainly puts into perspective the great food that we have back here. Yes, not all that is abroad is good. Vancouver did however prove to be rather amazing and nowhere more so than at The Parker, where we were filming the newest episode of my TV show International Chef Exchange. Chef Steve Xou is a chef of great skill and charm, too, and I was lucky enough to be there for the press launch of their Dine Out Vancouver Festival menu. Dine Out Vancouver is a huge deal and hundreds of venues participate and offer bargain set menus for the event. The Parker is a vegetarian restaurant and a foodie destination in the city, and the dishes I tasted were superb, a welcome relief as a few days later they were playing host to our exchange chef, Matty Bowling, who was representing Terre à Terre. Being on the north Pacific coast, Vancouver is a great place to eat fish – and I ate a lot. I had a simply delcious clam chowder at the Vancouver Fish Company of Granville Island which was topped with crisp bacon wrapped bacon – I know, how indulgent is that? It was great, by the way. This I followed with a selection of oysters. Oysters are popular in Vancouver and come in many varieties, so I had to eat rather a lot to do them justice. With an Asian population of around 50% of the total, Vancouver has many eastern delights to sample. In particular Japanese. On my first day I headed down to the waterfront at Canada

Place to a very smart restaruant called Miku. Miku is elegant and very popular but luckily the manager Ben found me a seat at the counter where I could watch the chefs preparing truly incredible dishes, some of which are singed at the last moment by a torch playing across a fat stick of charcoal. I ordered a platter of mixed delights that had me grinning, and a bowl of the finest miso soup I have ever eaten. With a pot of green tea, the total plus service and tax came to a very acceptable $37, and with the Canadian dollar being weak against Sterling it proved to be rather a bargain, a pattern that followed for the week. That night, after the launch of the Wine Festival, I ate great barbecued meats and drank crazy cocktails at Buck Stop with my old mate Ms B, now a Vancouver resident, before retiring to my hotel, the excellent Best Western on Granville and Drake. My day out at Granville Island, which is not an island at all, was packed with delights; distilleries, sake makers, chocolates, including a fig dipped in bitter chocolate and stuffed with blue cheese, and a market packed with amazing

looking fruits and vegetables too. It was a foodie paradise and I wished that I had space for more, but I did not. Later in the week we filmed at Hapa Izakaya, again at Canada Place. This was a different kind of Japanese cusine and very busy with local business people. I loved it, but in particular the dish served in a terracotta pot that was screaming hot. Our waiter stirred the contents together at our table and told us to leave it for five minutes, after which a crust had formed around the rice and meats and veg, and it was delicious, really moreish. No report on Vancouver would be complete without a trip to Joe Fortes. A city favourite, we hit it for Happy Hour, and how lucky were we – Happy Hour includes ‘buck a shuck’, oyster for a dollar a go. We also had oysters Rockerfeller, truffle chips, beef carpaccio and so much more, and all at Happy Hour prices. It looked great and the maitre d’Frenchy was a real character, larger than life and a very fine and kind host who, like all of Vancouver, made me very welcome. For foodies, Vancouver scores very high indeed.

ainly focusing on one man’s life, ‘John’ successfully delved into dark themes such as parental neglect, substance abuse and HIV while remaining entertaining and enthralling. Hannes Langolf’s performance as John was gripping, with his bold, jutting movements reflecting the intensity of his experiences, while his calm, chatty delivery of a real story (read verbatim) drew one in to empathise with and understand the characters rather than feeling preached at, or like a distant viewer. The revolving set was both technically impressive and stylistically effective, conveying a constant sense of movement and activity in a turbulent life. The superb performers were intricately and beguilingly choreographed, resulting in a powerful, moving piece of dance theatre.

RETURN TO THE FORBIDDEN PLANET You know you’re in for quite a theatrical experience when the cast interacts with the audience from the moment you step into the auditorium. Return To The Forbidden Planet is remarkable, due to the multi-talented actors and actresses who are involved with the production. Each plays an instrument (if not two) and all of them have vocal ranges that will not fail to impress. You get the feeling you are immersed within an outer space Bmovie, one which includes a filmed cameo from Brian May, no less! Return To The Forbidden Planet seamlessly combines Shakespearean prose with that of modern day, amalgamating it with rock ‘n roll hits all age groups will know. A fantastic music filled night that can be enjoyed by all. Theatre Royal Brighton, 21 January 2015 ★★★★★ Rachel Simm
NOODLES Noodles is a piece of avant-garde circus theatre. The ‘noodles’ element constitutes a running gag throughout the performance but also an extension for the mass of suspended ropes the performers use for some interesting trapeze-like feats. The aerial pieces are linked by some slight of hand magic (sit near the front to appreciate it more) or some untraditional clowning – more like glammed up minions – but the result was the same. Whilst you appreciate the acrobatics and awe at the dexterity there was, alas, something amiss. For me it all got a bit samey and dare I say it, done before, albeit with a fun and surreal twist. ine producing countries have long had their eyes on the China market, some achieving more success than others (Bordeaux and Australia do well, for example), and indeed the market is growing rapidly. China now ranks as the world’s largest red wine market, having edged above France. But the vast majority of wine consumed is produced domestically, and China is now the world’s fifth largest wine producer. Yet very little of this wine is seen outside the country, leaving winemakers and wine drinkers elsewhere to ponder: is it any good? And, when you can find it, what is the best wine region within this vast country? Industry experts point out that the most prominent wineries, or wine consultants, have been bringing expertise from outside. There are huge domestic producers such as Dynasty, Changyu and Great Wall. But the most prominent names associated with quality such as Judy Chan (owner of Grace Vineyard in Shanxi Province), Emma Gao (owner of Silver Heights in Ningxia) and Li Demei, an academic and consultant in Xinjiang, represent international expertise (principally Bordeaux) in terms of viticulture and vinification. Grace Vineyard was a quality pioneer in central China, and its Taysa’s Reserve wines (a subtle Cabernet Sauvignon and wonderfully fresh Chardonnay) are available at Selfridges in London. Eyes were on the easterly Shangdong Province, but the climate is very humid. All eyes lately have been on Ningxia, where Gao is also making very classy Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Could the landlocked Ningxia Province be ‘it’? “China is big and there must be regions where great wines can be made,” says Tersina Shieh, a Hong Kong-based wine culture consultant who studied winemaking at Plumpton Agricultural College. She says there is much to be done before it is relevant to think regionally. “The issue is with people – matching the right regions with suitable varieties, improving vineyard management and controlling yield.”

bright, funny and unruly sixth formers in pursuit of sex, sport and a place at university. Their maverick English teacher is at odds with the young and shrewd supply teacher, whilst their headmaster is obsessed with results and league tables. Staffroom rivalry and the anarchy of adolescence overflow, provoking insistent questions about history and how you teach it. Their A Levels may be over, but their true education is only just beginning. The History Boys is a hilariously funny and exceptionally moving play about the true purpose of education. The History Boys premiered at the National Theatre in 2004, directed by Nicholas Hytner, and helped launch the careers of many of its original cast members including James Corden and Dominic Cooper. The play was one of the National’s biggest ever hits and went on to open on Broadway in 2006, with a film adaptation featuring the original stage cast released later that year. Alan Bennett is one of the UK’s most celebrated playwrights and authors, and in a career that spans five decades has created many acclaimed works for theatre, television and film. His work for the stage includes People, Hymn and Cocktail Sticks, The Habit of Art, Talking Heads, The Madness of George III and Kafka’s Dick. Prior to his work as a playwright, Bennett enjoyed enormous success as a co-writer and performer of Beyond the Fringe, a comedy stage revue which played in the West End and on Broadway in the 1960s. At the 2005 Olivier Awards, Bennett was awarded the Society Special Award for his contribution to theatre. Armed with red bull, microphones and the carpet from your local pub, Kate Pierson Hurts, Sometimes is an exploration of nostalgia, growing up, looking back, the politics of fame and attention, regret and forgiveness. Cool Hunting is the collaborative work of Daniel Hills and Rachel St Clair. They create work about their relationship to pop culture and the absurdity of trends. You’ll often find them dancing, immersing themselves in subcultures or emulating their idols, and they’re interested in how we measure up against the ‘grandiose’ image of the pop scene. Second up, Beetle and Bird present Moon Fruit. Moon Fruit is an anti-theatre performance that reflects nature and the physical body, a nostalgic tale of two people searching for companionship on this lonely planet. Beetle and Bird are a London based performance duo, founded in 2010 by Kitty Dalton and Milly Prett. They began collaborating in 2009 whilst studying Performance and Visual Art at the University of Brighton. Combining Milly's writing with Kitty's musical skills and the pair’s shared vision, they create richly visual and emotive pieces. Tickets are available from the Marlborough Theatre’s website, in person behind the bar, or on

ow for something a little different – the eccentric Big Daddy vs Giant Haystacks gig is coming to the Rialto on Wednesday 18 February. Every Saturday between 1976 and 1988, millions of Britons were in the grip of an extraordinary sports phenomenon: watching two fat men pretend to fight. This is their story. This 'excellent new play' (British Theatre Guide) was a knockout hit at Edinbugh 2013. Written by Latest’s own cheeky boys Brian Mitchell and Joseph Nixon, starring Ross Gurney-Randall and David Mounfield, this will be their last gig after a four year run. The team will be donating their share of the income from this final performance to The Brighton Open Air Theatre fund. BRIGHTON’S ARTY
Alison Krog
MAPPING IT OUT erendipity. Don’t you just love it! For a long time now the Dane and I have wanted to create a map showing Brighton’s arty shops and galleries. We’ve always admired Drink in Brighton’s cartographical masterpiece. (And we’ve Phil Dobson had plenty of opportunities given the many hours – nay days we while away in the city’s hostelries.) We had a go at commissioning one once. And delightful though it was, perhaps a tad too much artistic licence (or beer) was taken by its creator, and the missing streets and several wrong turns rendered it of little practical use. So I nearly Yvonne Coomber fell off my chair when I saw the artwork sent to us by Phil Dobson for his pages in Brighton’s Artists 2015. It’s just the most brilliant seagull’s eye view of Brighton. And he’s very kindly given us permission to annotate a monotone version to open our chapter on Galleries & Shops. ART5 Gallery Perfect! Another submission that spread a lot of happiness in the house of Krog this week was from the divinely talented Yvonne Coomber. She calls her work ‘a celebration of all that’s good in the world’. Her evocative, dreamy, rainbow-drenched paintings sing of wild, tumbling hedgerows, tangled meadowlands, open moorlands and magical forests. What’s more they literally sparkle with joy due to the mixture of materials she uses. Oils, inks, glosses, acrylics, glazes, fine glitter and gold leaf are applied by the artist in a multitude of layers for a result that takes the viewer – in Yvonne’s words – to ‘a place where paint smiles’. If you can’t wait for our new book to be published to be transported to this effervescent wonderland, head to ART5 Gallery on Bartholomews. It’s a super artspace, super welcoming and represents an enticingly diverse selection of artists – including Yvonne. See for yourself! www.artymagazines.com

The little big gigs that no one knows about... yet
T
his Saturday sees the start of a very important season in the Brighton comedy calendar. Over at The Basement on Saturday you will be able to see critically acclaimed comedian Ed Aczel run through a work in progress of his forthcoming show. That’s a work in progress. Not complete. And all the more fun for it. Preview season is about to start, running through shows being cobbled and whittled into shape by the big and small names of comedy in readiness for the Brighton Fringe in May and the Edinburgh Fringe in August. It’s a slow trickle of a start, with Brian Gittins continuing his series of monthly Work In Progress free shows at The Caroline Of Brunswick, as well as the monthly new material night Laughable at The Basement, which this month is scheduled to include James Acaster and Iain Stirling, amongst others. Christmas and New Year are over and submissions are going in for fringe shows, comedians and sketch groups are waking up, yawning, and needing a place to try out new material, and now is the time for you to get first dibs on the biggest names. All I can say is, keep checking the websites for the venues that are loved for previews. The booker from The Caroline Of Brunswick has already squeaked with excitement on social media at the big names they are being offered that should soon be online, and with their track record

in the past including Rhod Gilbert, Isy Suttie, Richard Herring, Luisa Omielan, Nick Helm and Henning Wehn, tickets will fly off the website as soon as they’re announced. They’ve even said that they’re being offered comedians who have never played there before, meaning that sky’s the limit. Otherplace Productions at The Basement also have a brilliant track record with previews of big and rising stars, as does The Old Market. Yes, these shows aren’t finished, but I have long lauded the magic in seeing a show coming together and the magic of a gag or story being performed for the first time and hitting its mark. Plus, with ticket prices usually being under a tenner, that’s a true bargain to catch before they come back fully formed in October for the Brighton Comedy Festival and a price tag that doesn’t even start at that much. So log on, tune in and book now. And bag yourself a real treat. GAZ COOMBES The former Supergrass frontman and Brighton resident is back in town
Y
ou all know 'Alright', the number two hit of 1995 that has remained a staple of radio and indie clubland ever since, a cheeky indie pop rush of youthful optimism that persuaded Stephen Spielberg to inquire as to whether the members of Supergrass would be up for creating a ‘90s version of The Monkees ... Thankfully, that terrible idea was turned down: "We were young, got a call, went over there, and it was very surreal. We were focused on our second album, and we just knew what we wanted to do," says Gaz Coombes. "I don't think any of us were ready to be teenage American TV stars. A bit f****d up, really." Gaz Coombes, Mick Quinn and Danny Coffey formed Supergrass in 1993 in Oxford, and after one single were signed up by heavyhitters Parlophone, who reaped the rewards quickly; their debut album I Should Coco made number one, and the hits kept coming: ‘Caught By The Fuzz’, ‘Mansize Rooster’, ‘Lenny’, ‘Going Out’, ‘Richard III’, ‘Moving’, ‘Grace’, and a host of others.
They were pop stars – the likes of Italian Vogue and Calvin Klein made modelling offers to Gaz, whose distinctive sideburns and cheeky ruffian features seemed to embody Britpop. Coombes grew those sideburns while still at school (because he could) and as far as I’m aware, has
never taken them off: "As far as I know, they’re still clinging on! If I shaved them off they would be back within 10 or 15 seconds. I can't get rid of them. I did think about growing a beard with it, but I reckon I would look like a f****d up Father Christmas…" At the height of their fame in the late ‘90s, Coombes decided to move down to Brighton, ending up staying here for a number of years.
It was a period he remembers with fondness: "I think it was about just getting away from Oxford at that time. The vibe around where we were living, it was random bits of violence, heroin was on the up and up … a few people where we were living were into that game. Although the band was going well, me and my girlfriend were getting a bit disillusioned, and we thought we would get away from it. And Brighton was on the up. We lived all over; in Hove, Brighton and Kemptown. Loved it, man! We were there before we had kids, and it suited our lifestyle, lots of socialising, and making the most of all those wonderful pubs," he laughs. Supergrass called it a day in 2010. Since then Coombes has been carving out a solo career, and has just released his second album, Matador. Encompassing psychedelia, krautrock, ambient and the odd Radiohead-style soundscape, Matador demonstrates his often underrated knack for melody and song craft. "There are a lot of first takes on the album, a lot of first vocal takes. I did most of it at home. What was cool about this record was writing songs on drums, or on the bass, or even starting on a loop. It feels really good, like it did when we were with Parlophone in ‘94 and ‘95. lbert Einstein said that “anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new”. I really like this quote, since it sums up what we are all about at the STEM (Science, Technology, & Maths) centre. It’s good LATESTWRITES Engineering to know that Richard Robinson, the founder of Brighton Science Festival, is also on the same wavelength. Brighton Science Festival runs from 5 February to 1 March and as stated by Richard: “It started ten years ago, because … well, because everyone needs a science festival. It’s the best way to discover where we came from, deal with where we are and debate where we might go in the future. There are some extraordinary and inspiring science communicators out there, and we search all the festivals and publishers in Britain to bring the best to Brighton.” Richard also highlights; “ Young people love to explore, experiment and create. They don’t mind making mistakes along the way. But the curriculum doesn’t leave time for mistakes. They have to get the right version in their books straight away, ready to move on to the next topic. There is no room for the Anyone who has spirit of discovery.” We hope to address this at the never made a STEM centre and are delighted that mistake has never Richard, after coming to our Open wants to be on board and tried anything new Evening, help us to accomplish this.
