BARE CHEEK Brian Mitchell and Joseph Nixon’s thoroughly scurrilous Brighton column
WHAT WAS THAT? MAGICIAN SPECIAL Over the last few weeks I've been getting an increasing number of queries regarding famous magicians, wizards, sorcerers, diabolists and the like, and thought it would be best to answer them in one column. Apologies to those who have been left waiting but I hope it proves worth it. Dear Mike, There's a magician me and my brother loved as children, and I'd love to try and track down a DVD for my bro's birthday, but I can't remember this bloke's name. He was a short chap with a Yorkshire accent and a wig who was always smartly-dressed, and had a great line in amusing patter. He would perform enjoyable tricks in a primetime BBC show accompanied by a typically

Pete Daniels, Hove Well Pete I think I think you're going to like my answer – not a lot, but you'll like it! Yes, the much-loved illusionist of whom you speak (who still pops up on out TV screens from time to time, often accompanied by his glamorous assistant, who is indeed his “better half”) is, of course, the great beast himself Aleister Crowley. Cheers! Mike Dear Mike, The wizard I am thinking of is a historical figure who was the advisor of the possibly mythical King Arthur – he was supposedly born of mortal woman, sired by an incubus, and was a very powerful seer and enchanter.
Dear Geoffrey, Piff paff poof! The rubicund fellow of whom you speak is none other than famed street magician and endurance artist David Blaine. Thanks all, and please keep those letters flooding in. All the best, Mike XXX
He died after being trapped inside a tree for all eternity by the sorceress Nimue and is supposed to return to defend England in its hour of greatest need. Please help. Marlon Mervyn Sterling, Portslade Dear Marlon, Sleep in the belly of the dragon! The mystical figure of whom you speak has been the subject of innumerable book, films and TV shows. He is, of course, Ali Bongo. Dear Mike, This was a clue in a pub quiz last week. I had to leave before the end, and it's been driving me mad. Google's no help. Mid Summer Ball launch 2015 – celebrity dancers and judges announced
Barry Carden, Eleanor Harris, Nicola Hume & Tome Evans with pro dancers
New General Manager of the Hilton Brighton Metropole, Sascha Koehler
CHARITY CHARLESTON AT THE MID SUMMER BALL Hilton Brighton Metropole’s Mid Summer Ball returns this year on Saturday 20 June, in aid of Hilton In The Community Foundation and Rockinghorse Children’s Charity. The 2015 Mid Summer Ball, famed for its Strictly Come Dancing theme, sees the return of local TV and radio star Zoe Ball as Head Judge. Along with her panel, she will help score those brave enough to take part in the dance competition in front of nearly 500 guests. Four celebrities and local personalities will be attempting The Charleston 1920s inspired dance with a Great Gatsby theme, with their expert partners. This year’s dancers are Eleanor Harris, Chief Executive of the Brighton i360 tower, Barry Carden, Managing Director of Cardens Accountants in Hove, and Heart Sussex Breakfast Show co-hosts Nicola Hume and Tom Evans. The annual event will be raising money for Hilton in the Community Foundation, which helps young people have a brighter future in Brighton, across the UK and Europe, and Rockinghorse Children’s Charity who are the official fundraising arm of the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton. Simon Sheehan, Director of Hilton In The Community Foundation, said; “We are delighted to be partnering with Rockinghorse Children’s Charity again. The Mid Summer Ball will be a spectacular evening of 1920s frivolity whilst supporting the work of two charities who help the young people of Sussex.” Ryan Heal, Chief Executive of Rockinghorse Children’s Charity, added; “We are delighted to have been chosen as a local beneficiary charity. Special thanks to our dancers, who will be helping to raise money for children who need our support.” Guests on the night will also have the opportunity to take part in a charity auction and the infamous indoor dodgems. Tickets for the event on Saturday 20 June are selling fast. To book, contact Nicky Willard on 01273 715043 or email nicky.willard@hilton.com. Tickets are £80 each or £750 for a table of ten.

Brighton and Hove City Council leader Jason Kitcat on budget FAQs Why can’t we spend the money for the i360 on services like children’s centres? The i360 is being funded by a mix of private finance and government loans. It is not being funded with council money which could otherwise be used for services. Because we acted as agent for the loans, the council will make around £1.1 million a year for 25 years from the i360. These extra funds will help support hardpressed council services and fund renewal of the seafront. Why can’t income from parking charges be used to keep services going? Income from parking charges and fines are strictly regulated. Any surplus can only be used on transport-related spend. Most of our parking surplus, around £10 million, pays the bus companies for the concessionary passes we are required to provide all pensioners and those with disabilities. Since we took office in 2011, parking charges only saw one significant change, an average 5% increase in 2012. Other than some targeted reductions such as for Madeira Drive and London Road, charges have remained frozen since. Budget council later this month will consider proposals for an average 2% increase to parking charges, from 1 April 2015. Even if agreed, this will mean parking charges have remained below inflation since 2011 which has compounded at 10% since then. Why can’t we redirect the spend on transport improvements to other things? The vast bulk of funding for transport works in the city are from transport only ring-fenced funds including the EU, Department for Transport and developer contributions. We have won nearly £70 million in external funding since 2011. This has brought extra money into the city, enabling improvements to happen which we couldn’t otherwise have afforded.

THE VOTE
The annual council tax debate this week will set the budget for Brighton and Hove and shape the election battle to come
Green finance lead Ollie Sykes
T
he amount that we pay in council tax in the coming year will be decided on Thursday (26 February). It is decided at the annual budget meeting of Brighton and Hove City Council. It is a decision that rests with all 54 councillors who obliged to set a legal budget. It gives them less room for manoeuvre than some would like. There are three options on the table. The minority Green administration wants to put up bills by 5.9%. This is above inflation but, they are quick to point out, below the level of rises agreed when Labour was in charge. With 20 councillors, out of the 54, they are short of a majority. Their position is complicated by the fact that the local party recently voted to reject its own budget proposals. The concern is over the level of spending cuts that will follow even if council tax rises by 5.9%. So the Green group of councillors looks as though it may be split on this high-profile vote. The Conservatives want the council tax to be frozen. The coalition government provides some financial compensation for those local authorities that freeze council tax – £1.2 million next year for Brighton and Hove. But it
doesn’t make up for the long-term effect of having a reduced tax base. Labour advocates a 2% rise. This is known as the threshold increase because a rise in council tax above the 2% threshold will trigger a referendum. Locally this would be held on the same day as the local elections and the general election. Labour has said that a 2% rise is reasonable while a 5.9% would be less affordable for poorer people.
If voters believe the outcome is important enough, they will bother with the ballot The party also believes that a referendum would be an unnecessary extra cost. The total is likely to be a six-figure sum. And they believe that councillors were elected to make exactly these sort
of decisions. While the Conservatives as a group oppose the idea of a referendum usually, some believe that it would have its benefits this year. They believe that voters would turn down the 5.9% rise. But if they didn’t, the council would have a bigger budget. The Greens’ position is; “Let the voters decide.” A referendum – the mechanism favoured by the government for above-threshold rises – would at least allow politicians and officials to know that the rise – or freeze – in council tax bills commanded reasonably widespread support. One thing the parties agree on is that turnout is likely to be reasonably high – and a referendum would add to the interest. The Scottish referendum last year showed that if voters believe that the outcome is important enough and they can influence the result, they will bother with the ballot. The difference in the amount most people will pay is negligible whether council tax bills are frozen or rise by 2% or 5.9%. Those politicians emphasising this point often cite a weekly sum while those highlighting the difference will cite the annual amount. The difference in the council’s £750 million budget is another matter. The difference is – at most – likely to be £5.5 million. It may be less than 1% of the annual spend but the impact will be felt by real people. The fear among some is that the people who will feel the effect of spending cuts are those most in need of the services and support provided by the council. A year ago councillors were unable to agree the budget at the annual meeting. Rather than negotiate through the night, they held a second meeting soon after. Few people like to compromise but unless someone gives ground the council tax won’t be set. If that happens, the government will send in commissioners. They will almost certainly freeze the council tax, make cuts with less local knowledge and sensitivity and render our councillors and some of our officials irrelevant. Even most Conservatives would not want this option. It all adds to the pressure to reach an agreement at Hove Town Hall on Thursday.

PRIME VISIT Prime Minister David Cameron came to town last week. The focus on the visit to Hove's Blatchington Mill School was unveiling plans to crackdown the numbers of young people receiving benefits. In between rallying the Tory troops ahead of May’s general election, he also sat down with Latest TV for an exclusive interview. The fact he chose local television rather than the region’s was obviously a big coup for our city's very own channel. To see what he had to say, visit www.thelatest.tv.

BUDGET D-DAY One thing that the Prime Minister did comment on was the running of Brighton and Hove City Council. He was less than flattering about the way the Greens have run the authority – but then you'd expect that in an election year. Months of debating will come to a head on Thursday when councillors sit down to set a budget. At least that's what the hope is. The minority Greens want a 5.9% council tax rise which will trigger a referendum. The Conservatives favour a freeze, while Labour have chosen 2%. With all three parties refusing to budge and no one having a majority, expect lots of deliberating before any decision is made.

SAFETY WORDS Richard Shayler: a walk on the wild side
IT! W O SH I think you need to relax ... you’re sweating profusely. Please sir, you need to calm down. No sir, I can’t let you in, you haven’t got a ticket. I don’t care if you’ve dressed up especially for this. No, I don’t like your whip – and no, I most certainly don’t like your paddle. Put it down sir! No, I said put it down! OK that does it. SECURITY!” This was an unfortunate misunderstanding I recently encountered at the cinema. I was in the Fifty Shades of Grey queue. I fashioned a rather trim suit, soldier’s cap and leather boots. My right hand wielded a whip and the left a humble paddle. I also had something in my pocket that I won’t divulge but let’s just say it most definitely should have stayed at home ... I thought, why not? I wanted to ride the BDSM bandwagon. I wanted to take it by the reins and make it submit. Make it squeal the safety word we’d agreed on pre-ride. I wanted to experience what all the fuss was about. But I was denied all this. After all my planning. My outfit. My getting to the cinema on time. My adrenaline rush. My excitement. My dreams of becoming enlightened to a world previously unknown. All

destroyed due to the show being sold out. In my unfortunate enthusiasm I had forgotten the most vital thing – the dashed cinema ticket! I haven’t read the books and I don’t think I ever will. Not because I’m a bookaphobe, it’s simply because I don’t want to be seen reading it. Even in the comfort of my own flat … what if someone looks through the window and spots me? “Look at him,” they’ll sneer, “dirty man, reading his dirty filth. Probably getting a thrill out of it. Disgusting.” That’s what they’ll jeer. They will, and I won’t be having it. It makes me wish our culture wasn’t so prudish. I can hold my hands up and admit guilt to this, too. I was recently asked to go and see the film but I refused. I thought they were testing me to see if I was a pervert or not. I wish I had said yes. But instead I’m being escorted out of the cinema by the security yelling, “please be careful, the whip was expensive and the paddle isn’t even mine!” You see … I got annoyed that I refused my girlfriend’s invitation to go and see it so I went full circle and decided to embrace it wholeheartedly. Instead of just peeking in for a curious look, I tore down the protective leather curtain and cannonballed straight in. I wanted to prove to everyone that I was OK with it – prove that it couldn’t faze me. Unfortunately in doing this I was left ashamed and embarrassed. And the final insult to injury happened upon my ejection from the cinema. That ‘thing’ fell out of my pocket. Someone whispered … “disgusting” … I reached down and picked it up. It was all three Fifty Shades in one big compendium.

INSIDE BRITAIN’S GOT TALENT
Guy Lloyd took the plunge and faced the dreaded buzzers ...
LATESTWRITES
Cape in full effect like a bird spreading its wings
GUY LLOYD
I
’ve been silenced for too long but now, finally, I can speak out. I was on Britain’s Got Talent this week. It all started before Christmas, when a friend of mine called me saying she was helping out the show’s producers. She rang to see if I knew any talented people in Brighton. “No,” came my reply, “but I know a 45-year-old man in a gold catsuit who could belt out a Queen song.” “Perfect,” she said, audibly disappointed. And so it began. That Saturday, in full make-up and shiny gold skin, I strutted my stuff to ‘Fat Bottomed Girls’ with a full light show and smoke machine, at Concorde 2, in front of a researcher and a cameraman. I signed a bit of paper and they said they’d be in touch. Within days, they said they’d liked what they’d seen and they’d like to see more. This time they wanted me to film five different song choices and send it back to them with my top five song preferences to ‘sing’ on the show. Off it went back to BGT HQ, and again they responded fairly quickly saying they liked what they saw and they were ‘seriously considering’ me for the show. Weeks later, I was confirmed to perform in front of the judges and a live audience at the Dominion Theatre, London. I got my makeup done in Brighton, slipped on a tracksuit over my catsuit and headed to the big smoke with my family and friends. It was a very surreal day. We arrived on the red
performance no one will ever see but also some relief that we would no longer be involved. It’s fun, but it’s manipulating. I went as a character (Vince Venus) but of course, all they wanted to know about was Guy Lloyd, and I wasn’t willing to expose that side so much. I found the constant interrogating exhausting. They work hard at breaking you down. Overall, it was a great experience and fascinating seeing the workings of the biggest show on telly. But what I soon realised was that even if you go in as a bit of a joke, you are totally in the hands of a well-oiled machine, and as the hours went by it was my soul that was slowly ebbing away and not my vocal chords. They were never there in the first place. But I’d achieved my goal, to get in front of the judges and sing (for five seconds). It could have gone better (I was confident I could wow the crowd, probably not the judges) but it could have gone worse (getting through to the next round). If you have any desire to go on any of these reality shows, have a plan, be thick-skinned and don’t take it seriously. It’s just a telly show. But be warned, it can be a telly show at your expense. Luckily, I am all those things and I feel like I can look back on it now with fondness, but I saw so many people backstage with broken dreams and broken hearts. My advice – if you have a real talent (not a pretend one, as I had), do it the traditional way. Work hard, focus, and ride the bumps. Don’t let someone else take control. However, if you want to meet Ant n’ Dec, go for it. They are lovely chaps.
carpet (rolled up), shortly before Ant n’ Dec and the judges rocked up (red carpet rolled down) and that was probably my most nervous moment. What followed was nine hours of interviews, set-up filming (chatting to other contestants, registering ten times, etc) and a lot of hanging around. I was on third from the end. I was tired, the crowd was tired and I think the judges were tired (hard to tell from all the botox). The most bizarre moment of the day was when I was being interviewed by Ant n’ Dec just before stepping out on to a stage in front of Cowell and the gang. There were people having minor strokes backstage and yet I’ve never felt so calm stepping out on to a stage. The moment was so surreal, I felt like I was in some strange cartoon. I didn’t really register the magnitude of it all. I stepped out into the spotlight and an excited ripple went through the audience but the look of utter disdain from the judges faces was obvious. They wanted to go home. I had a brief chat with a disinterested David Walliams, gave
the thumbs up to Ant n’ Dec and got into position. I was about five yards from the mic stand, when the opening chords of ‘I Want To Break Free’ rang out around the theatre. I rose up from my crouching position, cape in full effect like a bird spreading its wings, strode up to the mic, did a few strokes of air guitar (UK Champion) and sang my first line. Within seconds, all four buzzers went and that was that. I went off stage, relived we could get the last train to Brighton, to be greeted by Ant n’ Dec who said ‘it was some kind of record’ – the sheer speed at which I’d been voted off. My first thought was for the family and friends who had spent nine hours waiting for me to come on, only to watch my minute on stage. I needn’t have worried. As soon as I went into the corridor, I saw them all falling about on the floor laughing. There were only two outcomes for me doing this show: sing the song and wow the audience into a standing ovation, or fail spectacularly. I didn’t want to be mediocre. I had to settle for the latter. On the train home, chatting to my family and friends, there was a sense of being robbed of a

This year has been so exciting and this, for sure, is the icing on the cake.” The sequel is reported to be out this summer so maybe Zoe can then afford a beach hut on Hove seafront – watch this space!

veryone’s favourite Drivetime DJ, Juice FM’s Guy Lloyd, had quite a week last week. He donned his famous gold lame suit and cape and trotted off to the London Palladium to audition for the next series of Britain’s Got Talent. What happened next is described by Guy, in his blog. But for a sneak preview – “David Walliams said; ‘are you having a laugh?’ Well yes David, I would have, if you had given me a minute or two,” regales Guy. We look forward to seeing Guy’s performance on the London audition round of Britain’s Got Talent, which is back on our screens in two weeks’ time.

JIVE TALKIN’
A brand new production of iconic musical Saturday Night Fever, one of the most loved dance stories of all time, will appear at the Theatre Royal Brighton
L7 COVER STORY
eaturing a 20-strong cast of hugely talented actor/musicians, this spectacular new staging of Saturday Night Fever is packed with legendary hits from the Bee Gees, including the classics ‘Stayin’ Alive’, ‘Night Fever’, ‘Jive Talking’, ‘How Deep is Your Love?’ and ‘You Should Be Dancing’. The date is 1976 and in New York, Tony Manero, a young man from a tough Brooklyn neighbourhood with a dead-end job and an extraordinary ability to dance, has only one ambition – to become the disco king. Every Saturday night, Tony dons his flares and hits the dance floor, creating a stir as he wows the crowds with his phenomenal moves and routines. When he meets Stephanie, who also dreams of a world beyond Brooklyn, and they decide to train together for a dance competition, their lives begin to change forever. The smash hit 1977 film Saturday Night Fever starring Oscar-nominee John Travolta inspired the definitive soundtrack by the Bee Gees, and popularised disco around the world. The multi Grammy Award winning music behind the film, combined with its gripping storyline, captured the imagination of millions. The role of Tony Manero is played by Danny Bayne on stage, who made his West End debut as Danny Zuko in the musical Grease at London’s Piccadilly Theatre after winning ITV’s Grease Is The Word. He starred in the West End for two years and performed the role on tour. He returns to the role of Tony Manero after touring the US in Saturday Night Fever. A talented dancer, he has achieved the status of British Champion in Freestyle, Hip Hop, Latin American and Rock ‘n’ Roll. Come and strut your stuff at the Theatre Royal Brighton as Saturday Night Fever hits the stage for one week only, between Tuesday 3 – Saturday 7 March. www.atgtickets.com/brighton / 0844 871 7650 (booking fee applies)

DEAR JACQUIE Your queries about natural health answered by Jacquie Lane for the College of Naturopathic Medicine Are there natural prevention strategies for colds and chest infections? It goes without saying that smoking has a negative effect on the immune system. So does alcohol, sugar and caffeine. On the positive side, there are many specific nutrients and foods that you can use to boost your body’s immunity. Vitamin C boosts your immune system by helping to increase the production of infection-fighting white blood cells and antibodies. It may also increase your level of antibodies that coats cell surfaces, preventing the entry of viruses. Good food sources include parsley, broccoli, bell peppers, strawberries, oranges, lemon juice, papaya, kiwi fruits, cauliflower, kale, mustard greens and Brussels sprouts. Vitamin E also plays an important role. The main cells of your immune system patrol your body, waiting to attack a
dangerous invader. As you age, your immune cells don't work as well as they used to, so your immune system is weaker. But vitamin E has been shown in studies to significantly increase immune cell activity, thereby making your immune system stronger. Good food sources are spinach, Swiss chard, turnip greens, mustard greens, cayenne pepper, wheat-germ, hazelnuts, almonds, sunflower seeds, asparagus and bell peppers. Garlic is a natural immune system booster. It may stimulate the production of infectionfighting white blood cells and enhance the efficiency of antibody production. To get the full benefits of garlic, you should eat it raw, or very lightly cooked. Typical garlic pills may have had the active enzymes in the garlic that provide the health benefits, processed out. Zinc also increases the production of infection-fighting white blood cells, and helps white
PREVENTATIVE CARE A landmark new treatment for breast cancer survivors
ewly formed training provider UK Lymphology Clinics Ltd launch their first preventative healthcare – Module 1: Breast Cancer Lymphoedema Prevention – to meet the needs of breast cancer survivors in the UK, and would like to appeal to massage therapists to join and help stop the suffering caused by lack of treatment. Breast cancer survivors do not know or understand that lymphoedema is a preventable condition when addressed in the very early stages. Currently there is no treatment or awareness of this. Lymphoedema affects one in three patients, and occurs when there is an interruption in the flow of the lymphatic system which prevents lymph fluid from draining correctly. Left untreated, this can lead to painful swelling in the extremities, loss of movement due to fibrosis and a constant reminder of the cancer. Lymphatic Pressure Therapy offers survivors and training in Posture and Gait Analysis, Range of Motion Assessment, Kinex Muscle Reconnection, Lymphatic Pumping Massage and Specific Lymph Homecare Exercises, because survivors must start to use their whole shoulder as well as their arm as soon as they can after treatment. The trauma to the body often leads to a stiff neck, shoulder pain, back pain and achey arms and this is the start of lymphoedema. The lymphatic system needs the muscles to pump waste fluid, through their use and movement. Yvette Jordan, Training Director of UKLC, is a Lymphatic Specialist Practitioner and Lymphoedema Therapist and has developed Lymphatic Pressure Therapy from over 35 years’ experience. “A carefully balanced blend of professional disciplines has been designed specifically to maximise post-operative recovery. As I was treating my breast cancer patients there seemed to be so much more they actually needed to really fully recover. Thousands of patients so desperately need immediate preventative treatment and qualified

HEALTH& BEAUTY cells release more antibodies. Good sources of zinc include beef, oysters, crab, turkey, scallops, oats, yoghurt, ginger and spinach. Probiotics are great for enhancing your immune system, a healthy dose of beneficial bacteria that reside in your gut and make up about 70-80% of that system. Look for naturally sugar-free probiotic plain yoghurts and probiotic capsules. Avoid artificial sweeteners. Opt for organic, unprocessed, fresh food wherever possible so valuable nutrients can support your immune system, instead of being diverted to help deal with toxins you may be taking in. Elderberry extracts and certain herbal ranges may help stave off colds. See your health professional for personal advice.

GLOWING SKIN
Asha Bhola

How best to take care of it? Asha Bhola advises ...
ur skin! The largest organ of the body, both immensely strong and delicate. Alive yet dead, perfectly tailor-made to our exact requirements and when taken care of properly, will glow your whole life time ... So, let's start with skincare. There are a plethora of creams and serums, all promising benefits of varying kinds. This is my quick guide to what key vitamins the ingredients offer. Vitamin A: It helps to keep the skin soft and supple by ensuring moisture retention, thereby helping to prevent dryness, keratinization and skin conditions like psoriasis and acne. Vitamin C: Promotes collagen production and skin cell rejuvenation. Vitamin E: Offers protection from environmental damage. It's been shown when it is used before UV exposure that skin is less red, swollen and dry. Of course, these vitamin-packed creams and serums work best on skin that is properly exfoliated, otherwise your wonderful skin products are just wasted, sitting on top of dead skin and not providing you with any of the benefits promised! Asha Bhola Other important factors to consider for healthy skin: how clean are your make-up brushes? Wash your brushes out at least once a week with a tea tree or chamomile cleanser. Leave to dry naturally in an upright position. And keep well hydrated. Good hydration comes from food, juices, herbal teas and my favourite ... coconut water! That’s it from me, I hope you enjoyed reading. Asha Bhola – Asha’s Beauty Project, 42 Preston Street, Brighton, BN1 2HP, 01273 777911

Louise Michel talks to Suzie Sanderson uzie and her husband, Chris, are internationally renowned teachers of Alexander, and have taught 40,000 sessions. They offer practitioner training at their beautiful Georgian home in Kemp Town, and run one of the most successful private practices in the country. Suzie says “Anybody of any age can learn Alexander.” Why become a practitioner? Sarah Eddy, STOMP cast member affirms; “This course is brilliant.” Angela East, cellist, says; “For anyone who is considering training, I would say: ‘Do not hesitate’.” People who come in with physical complaints are often surprised by the lift in spirits. Julia Bishop, an international violinist says; “It seems that getting rid of aches and pains is only the beginning, it’s the psychological stuff which amazes me. A total liberation.” The Brighton School offers MSTAT qualification, running during school terms. Suzie tells me that most of their students are now in private practise, explaining how professionals from a variety of backgrounds have been inspired to retrain. “One of the advantages of being a practitioner is you only need a table, you can teach anywhere in the world, and have an income postretirement!” she beams. “It’s all about liberating people in mind, body and spirit.” The school offers solutions to a wide range of aches and pains and has private practices in Brighton, Reigate and Crawley. Everything you’ve never known about dermal fillers – we ask the questions!

Sanjeev Jandu
MPharm, Aesthetic Practitioner Hello Sanjeev. Here's a challenge – for those who have never heard of 'dermal fillers' before, how would you describe the treatment in one sentence?
Look like your confident younger self, without going under the knife!
ucked away in Preston Street is a little haven, in the form of Asha’s Beauty Project. This place of relaxation and tranquility is bubbling away underneath Yoyo’s Hairdressing, and it’s the ideal spot to get away from the stresses of city life. There is an array of treatments to choose from, ranging from facials, massage, IPL hair reduction, teeth whitening and botox. You can find it all here!
T
And what does the process involve? As we age, the contours of our face change as facial volume, hydration and skin elasticity decreases. This leads to the development of lines and wrinkles, as well as thinning of lips. By directly injecting the naturally-derived dermal filler to these lines and wrinkles, the lost skin volume is immediately replaced, helping to plump up, lift up and smoothen out wrinkles to the surrounding skin level. At the consultation you'll have the chance to meet and talk through your expectations of the treatment with me, where I will assess your needs and recommend the best treatment for you. No allergy testing is required, and the treatment is quick and easy! A mild topical anaesthetic (e.g. Emla cream) is applied to avoid any pain or sensation while injecting. Some swelling and redness may occur post treatment, which resolves within a few days. As it is biodegradable, the effects of dermal fillers would decrease over 6–9 months, hence touch ups may be necessary to help you maintain your new look. If additional treatments are not done or wanted, the corrections will gradually disappear and your skin will look just as it did prior to the dermal fillers.
Is it safe? Dermal fillers consist of a chemical known as hyaluronic acid that exists naturally throughout our body, for lubrication of joints, giving shape to our eyes and providing volume to our skin. For this reason, dermal fillers are completely biocompatible and safe for medical use. We will be using the Belotero range of dermal fillers, manufactured by Merz Pharma, which is a smooth gel used to plump and smooth out the nose to mouth lines and the vermilion border (lip-line) to help in lip enhancement.
Would you recommend the treatment to anyone, or are some people more suitable clients than others? Most people aged over 35. However, there are some exemptions that your practitioner will go through during your consultation.
Are dermal fillers popular in Brighton? In my experience, yes they are. For more information or to book an appointment, call: Sanjeev on 07708 371140 or Asha on 01273 777911
I was treated to an ‘Express Facial’. Upon arrival, Asha greeted me with a warm and friendly welcome. Some beauty salons can be a little bit icy, but Asha creates the perfect atmosphere to allow you to relax and feel at ease. She began the treatment with ‘face mapping’, which allows her to pin point any problem areas with the skin. This also indicates any issues related to diet or bodily functions. Yes, your skin really does tell all! As the facial commenced, Asha let me know the products she was using and why she had chosen them for my skin. The half an hour went past far too quickly. One of the notable things she did was massage and loosen my jaw, which was incredibly tight from stress, and causing headaches. The following day my skin was clear and soft. I have often suffered from spot breakouts after a facial, but this did not happen. If you would like a book an appointment yourself, Asha has now developed an app which allows for a speedy booking process for those on the go. Brilliant. MAJORITY RULES Science & technology at Portslade Aldridge Community Academy he Government believes that the future economic success of the United Kingdom depends on a good supply of skilled scientists and engineers. The current science curriculum attempts to provide both training in science for a minority and access to basic scientific literacy for the majority. Yet, more and more school children are being turned off by science. Forcing the majority to follow a science agenda aimed at the minority with the hope that it might encourage more pupils to take science as a post compulsory subject is having a detrimental effect on science education, due to the pressures it has introduced into the classrooms. What we have now is a system that is being driven by the needs of the minority, rather than serving the majority. Professor Edgar Jenkins (in 2009) highlighted this point: “An earlier definition of school science ‘as a pipeline, albeit leaky’, dedicated to supplying the next generation of scientists, is rejected in favour of ‘a science education for all’ that ‘can only be justified if it offers something of universal value for all rather than the minority who will become future scientists’.” Nick Gibb, MP minister of state for schools, in reference to academies, stated: “For far too long, governments of all persuasions have sought to interfere too much in the day-to-day management of schools. Academies are able to innovate across all aspects of their work, such as curriculum and assessment, to tailor the support they provide and drive up standards for all pupils in the communities they serve.” With the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) centre at PACA and support from the University of Sussex and University of Brighton, we are being offered a unique window of opportunity to innovate and deliver a science agenda fit for the 21st century. Due to the unnecessary and unhealthy competition developed between schools, funds have been diverted from the pot of educating our children into empty PR campaigns. It is time to re-address this and ensure that funds are directed to relevant educational activities, such as STEM. Being part of the brilliant Brighton Science Festival this year has re-affirmed my belief that STEM has a lot to offer our children.

A
s a theatre lover, nothing depresses me more than the news that yet another beautiful and historic building is under threat. Brighton has seen so many fall, converted to bowling alleys then demolished or simply allowed to fall into disrepair, I suspect in the hope that they might be condemned. For goodness sake, somehow the Palace Pier Theatre was dismantled and then lost – really, how do you lose a theatre? Now it’s the Hippodrome in Middle Street. I was lucky enough to see this masterpiece many years ago when it was being used as a bingo hall. Despite the tacky plastic furnishings, which had been dropped into the space like an alien invasion, it looked grand, truly spectacular. But with the advent of online
CURTAIN UP
What more needs to be done to save Brighton’s beautiful Hippodrome gambling bingo halls are no longer as popular as they were I guess, and so the Hippodrome closed its doors. I’m a great believer of preserving our heritage, although I’m no fan of the rampant misuse of that word, I quote; “heritage tomatoes”. Indeed! It strikes me in the same way that the word vintage now means second hand. As usual I digress. Full marks to the excellent campaigners that are fighting tooth and nail to get any decisions regarding the future, or lack of a future for the Hippodrome reversed. I cannot believe that someone thought that we needed yet another multiplex cinema in the town when quite often the ones that we have are sparsely occupied. Nor could I see any future for a massive food enterprise in a city where we clearly favour our home grown independent food businesses. Right now the city has a smattering of theatre venues, from the tiny to the fairly large. We have a good representation at the smaller end, with excellent venues like The Marlborough that have run for years and support local writing and performing talent. We have medium sized venues like The New Venture and Emporium that programme adventurously and again support local talent. At the larger end of the
The future lies in a cohesive plan followed by a supportive audience scale we have The Dome Complex which offers great spaces for theatre, concerts and dance and of course the Theatre Royal Brighton which is run by the international Ambassadors Theatre Group and programmes a balanced year of the very commercial with a good proportion of exciting, if less commercial, material. One could say that the ground is fairly well covered, and indeed it might be, were it not for the lack of a stage large enough to accept major West End touring shows, all of which go either east to the Congress in Eastbourne or west to the Mayflower in Southampton.
Okay, not that far away, but far enough and expensive enough to make a trip there not only pricey but also inconvenient. So at almost every level I support the campaign to save the Hippodrome, my only caveat being this: any plan to save it needs to be a well balanced and commercially viable one, and please, not one that will see a negative impact on our existing venues. Theatre is a vital part of our culture, entertaining and educational, and it would not be in the state that it is in if more of us went along to see it – and more often. The future lies in a cohesive plan followed by a supportive audience. My very best wishes go to the Our Brighton Hippodrome organisation in their fight to save this theatre gem.

SUNDAY HUNCH Indulging in the city’s Sunday best t’s the question I am asked more often than any other and the one that I find hardest to answer. My usual response is that the best Sunday lunch to be found is at my home – and you are not invited. I know, it sounds rude and unkind, but I do firmly believe that Sunday dining is for friends and family and I like nothing more than peeling potatoes and listening to The Archers. Follow that with a spot of basting to Desert Island Discs and gravy making to I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue, and you will find me in very good humour indeed. But if I were to do that on a regular basis I would be a very poor man indeed, always entertaining and only occasionally being entertained. As a consequence I do, from time to time, indulge in a roast dinner in one of the city’s numerous pubs – or should I say ‘gastro pubs’? I will also go off piste from time to time and always enjoy a visit to Agua Dulce, where their Spanish food reminds me of so many happy holidays – I rate them top Spanish restaurant for some miles. I have to say that whilst I admire the generosity of some places, I am not a great lover of plates piled high with a crazy assortment of vegetables. To my mind you need little more than roast potatoes, cabbage and carrots on your plate with perhaps the addition of a roast parsnip when they are really in season. And I hate a plate swimmimg in gravy, especially mediocre gravy, it simply makes your meal wet and the only foods that should be really wet are soup, and perhaps custard. Last weekend I happened to need to meet with my food festival colleague Mr M for a catch up and at his suggestion we went to the Ginger Dog. I like The Dog because of all the Gingers it

remains the most pub-like, and the welcome there is always warm. I arrived early and sat at the bar with a swift pint, the first in some time and very good it was too, 360 by name I believe. Mr M arrived and we sat down for our meeting. The Sunday menu is concise but still full of choice and the blackboard over the roaring fire had a few specials too. Mr M started with sea bass with a crab tartare and pickles. It looked very good and he made pretty light work of it, although he does have a tendency to eat around the edges and dismiss certain plated items, this time a pale pink sauce. I headed to the blackboard for pigeon breast with lentils and ketchup. I love pigeon although it is on my do-not-eat list along with lentils, so this was a double whammy danger – thank the lord for Allipurinol is all I can say. Anyway, it was delicious, really very fine and very satisfying. Mr M then perused the wine list and declared that he fancied trying a Brazilian. Well I’ll leave you to imagine the ribald banter that followed. It turned out to be an inoffensive whit, pinot grigio and reisling, the reisling knocking the sharp edges off the pinot grigio I decided. Anywho, not

bad and not a silly price. For the main course we both chose the braised belly of pork. It must have been a piggy sort of day all round as Mr M tends to go veggie or fish these days. It was very good, soft to the knife and tasty too. The crackling was crisp and sharp but only skin and not the crystaline layer beneath, which I always think is the best part, and runs less risk of tooth damage. The potatoes were the best roast potatoes I have been served out in some time and the vegetables were also good – a carrot, a parsnip, some excellent cauliflower cheese and some red cabbage and kale. I could have lived without the red cabbage, it was good but not neccessary. I also broke my rule and accepted a Yorkshire pud, even though I was not eating beef. It was very nice. Stupidly though I forgot to ask for my gravy to be served on the side, in a jug, and so my meal was rather too wet for my liking, in part my own fault. We were too full for pud! n 1998, Bordeaux heavyweight Bruno Prats sold the family estate – the classified Second Growth Cos d’Estournel in St-Estephe. Today, Prats is behind Vina Aquitania in Chile, with partners including Paul Pontallier (of Chateaux Margaux), Chryseia in Portugal (with the Symingtons), and Anwilka in South Africa (with Hubert de Bouard de Laforest, owner of Angelus). Prats continues to work with classic French varietals but in Portugal has embraced the Douro’s top two indigenous grapes, Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca. Now he’s created AlfYnal in the Spanish region of Alicante DO, working with another fascinating grape – the red variety Monastrell (also known as Mouvedre). It grows in southeastern regions including Jumilla and Yecla, across to Alicante on the coast. What do the Spanish themselves think of this variety? “It is known in Spain but only by those people who really like wine,” says Daniel Castano, from Familia Castano estate in Yecla DO. He adds that the southeastern wine growing areas of Spain are probably more recognised in export markets, with a growing reputation for offering great value for money. There are few grapes that can stand this area’s intensity of heat, or indeed that require so much heat to ripen fully. Yet the grapes still maintain refreshing acidity. The vines are not trained, but sit close to the ground in bush style – providing sun protection for the grapes. The majority of vines are old: upwards of 40 years. Yields are low on old vines, creating intensity of flavours, with earth and spice complementing red and black fruits, but what is most thrilling about these wines is their freshness. One wonders how is it possible to make such a refreshing style of wine, with tamed tannins. High altitude slopes are critical, but then it is about varietal selection. “Monastrell vines are very well adapted to dry weather,” says Castano. “It is one of the most resistant varieties, as far as we are aware.”
alking about kinky ladies. Weren’t you? Well we were. Because Eve Poland has just given us the go ahead for her page in this year’s must-read book: Art in Brighton 2015. And one of the artworks she’s featuring, ‘Our Lady of the Catnip’, is that irresistible combination of a foxy female draped in twisted kitties. The Dane’s had to go for a lie down. So enjoy this sneak preview – and look out for our new publication in April. While we’re on the subject of naughtiness, She Said – Brighton’s famously erotic boutique – is currently hosting an explosively colourful exhibition of artworks by Louise Dear in its recently opened flagship store on Eve Poland Ship Street. The show is cheekily entitled ‘Fifty Shades of Love’, with not a grey in sight. Louise’s neopop infused works are a sumptuous feast of colour, expertly fashioned using a multitude of media; golds, glitters and glosses layered on panels of distressed aluminium. Lavish, richly textured figures are sensually erotic, luminous and powerful, overlaid with flowers and frivolity that entice and seduce the Louise Dear viewer. Until 28 March. Don’t miss: The Big Heart Auction is a very special online charity art auction raising money for Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice. It kicks off live on eBay from 26 February and runs for 10 days, with an amazing array of work donated by Brighton’s gorgeous, generous creative community such as this sensational print, ‘Sussex Downs Sunset Crimson I’, by one of our favourite Phoenix artists, David Moore. Dig deep and get your bids in. And if you want to see the artworks up close, head to Brighton Dome between 4–6 March for the free exhibition (10am–5pm). NOTHING VENTURED Highlights from one of the city’s brightest theatres
on Freeview channel 8, But earlier in his career, Shaffer penned works which New Venture describe as “Domestic Comedies”. In The Private Ear, classical music fan Bob has a big date with Doreen but misguidedly also invites ladies’ man Ted along to cook and offer moral support. The resulting situation is embarrassingly humorous – no doubt we have all been a Bob, Ted or even Doreen at some point in our lives. In the second half of this Shaffer double bill, they are presenting Black Comedy, again set in the 1960s and a classic farce, where wires are crossed as sculptor Bridsley attempts to sell some of his work to a millionaire whilst simutaneously asking Colonel Malkeet for his daughter’s hand in marriage. Add borrowed antiques and an interfering neighbour, not to mention a clutch of other unexpected guests, and the result is hilarious mayhem. I love a good farce, a much maligned and neglected form, and this promises to be a night of chaotic comedy. The Private Ear and Black Comedy, 20–28 Feb
humour it explores what people really want and the possibility that helping others is inviting more trouble than it’s worth. When architect David takes on a regeneration project in a “twilight” area, delays and obstacles make it more and more likely that he will have to build towers that he doesn't really want to build and no-one wants to live in.
n March look out for Benefactors by Michael Frayn, another favourite author and playwrite. Frayn has an extraordinary way with words and humour and this is again an early work from the man who penned Copenhagen, Balmoral and Noises Off. The play asks; what do we want? What does anybody want? “Nice little semis with nice little gardens?” But David cannot build the people of Basuto Road “nice little semis”, as he needs to provide more housing, not less. Written in 1984, set in the late 1960s and early ‘70s, Benefactors depicts a time of great change in society, from personal relationships to architecture. With cynicism and a dry, witty
At the same time, unhappy housewife Jane decides to take on the regeneration of their neighbours’ lives by persuading them to work for David. But just how helpful is this? As the couple’s lives become more intertwined it would appear as inevitable as the high rise blocks that the foundation of their relationships will be rocked. Benefactors by Michael Frayn won the Evening Standard Award for Best Play and the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play in 1984. ’m always impressed by the programming of The New Venture Theatre. It is ambitious, brave and bright, and this spring sees them on top form with a series of plays by top writers in their formative years. In February they will be presenting a double bill of works by Peter Shaffer. Shaffer is probably best known for major works like Amadeus and Equus, two brilliant plays that received international acclaim and went on to be made into hugely successful films.

SCOTT MATTHEWS The Boy from the Black Country has a new album
B
ack in 2006, Scott Matthews was hot news. The gifted guitarist, singer and songwriter from the Black Country had released his debut album, Passing Stranger, that year, before being picked up by Island Records who re-released the album later that year. ‘Elusive’ became his signature tune, becoming Single of the Week on Zane Lowe’s show, and picking up an Ivor Novello award the following year for the same song. 2006 also saw him support Foo Fighters on an acoustic tour. Coming across as the musical descendant of John Martyn and Nick Drake, Matthews wasn't able to fully capitalise on his early success; it was more than three years before the follow up album, Elsewhere, and the momentum slightly lost … but he never went away, and late last year he released Home: Part One, another very fine album, elegantly soulful with a folk undertow. Now signed to the American Thirty Tigers label, the album is the first to be recorded in his home studio, which he built himself. “I’m still in the Wolverhampton area, just...” he says. “Someone has to occupy
that space. You’re not missing much. But, you get a sense of characters this way; people are genuinely down to earth, when you speak to a local-local. I never really wanted to move anywhere else … I’ve been blessed to travel around the wold – Australia, LA – this Black Country kid, y’know? But, it’s back to this familiarity, somewhere you can feel the tension in your shoulders go.” Matthews’ deep love for music and respect for his audiences remains very high: “I'm always conscious of leaving somewhere with a pretty good representation of myself, making sure that people get it. You can so easily go through the motions if you’re not careful. Personally, I believe you can’t dupe the punters, you gotta get the
feeling across from the time you put pen to paper and wrap the guitar around the song. “The comments after shows have been encouraging. What matters to me is that people that come to a show are understanding and we can all find a bit of escapism and forget about the world, or think about the world in another way … through the power of music!” Matthews dryly drones. For this tour he’ll be part of a quartet that also includes Lamb’s double bassist Jon Thorne, as well as his stalwarts, Danny Keane (cello/piano) and Sam Martin (drums/tabla). And later this year he’ll be working on the follow up, Home: Part Two. “The original vision was a double album, but it’s turned out to be a staggered album. They might package them both together at some point. ‘Two’ will have a bit more texture, take stuff from being on the road over the last couple of years. “It gets a bit lonely in the studio sometimes. But my missus will just waltz in and say, “that’s good”, or “that’s not so good”. She’s the go-to for that instantaneous opinion. A good laugh!” Scott Matthews, St. George’s Church, Fri 27 Feb, 7pm, £16.50

LONG STORY
FILM
JOSIE LONG – CARA JOSEPHINE Corn Exchange, Brighton Dome, 19 February 2015 ★★★★★ photo credit: Giles Smith
O
n a cold and drenching night, the affect from Josie Long’s deeply personal, honest and funny show gently warmed and lifted spirits to the very marrow. Starting with heartbreak and what sounds very much like a bout of depression – neither rare topics amongst comics – there was a well-written yet brutal honesty to Long’s prose that brought a freshness and believability to what could have been a well walked path. This was so clearly her story and no one else’s, at times dipping more into storytelling than pure comedy, but keeping its heart at the core throughout. Unflinching, uplifting, and beautifully reflective – the world is a better place for having Long’s perspective on it.

THE OCTONAUTS AND THE DEEP SEA VOLCANO ADVENTURE – LIVE For anyone aged under 7 years old this show had everything to send them into a frenzied revelry. For those of you without the need to keep a child quite at 5am, The Octonauts is a CBeebies cartoon about an underwater rescue team of animals (think Thunderbirds in the ocean) and to children it’s like catnip. The live show (like the cartoon) is a nice balance of colourful fun, a bit of oceanic education and ‘on the brink of disaster’ plots. It’s not just been thrown together to make a quick shilling, the set and costumes look decent and the actors work hard to keep the audience engaged. Good family entertainment. ELLEN KENT’S RIGOLETTO Ellen Kent’s touring performances continually astound with high quality across the board, including an eye-catching painted main stage cloth and stunning stage design in this exciting and accessible version of Verdi’s opera. Baritone Vladimir Dragos was superb as always as Rigoletto, commanding the stage and veering from humour to rage to despair convincingly with a rich, warm singing voice. Soprano Maria Tonina had a fluttering, piercing and high melodic grace about her as Gilda, sounding at times like a divine musical saw. Her romantic duet with Giorgi Meladze was the musical and emotional high point, with the delicate, quiet harmonies a refreshing change from the throaty bombast of many operas. WHERE’S THE SUSPENSE?
D
ear reader, as I write to you I have no idea what happened at the Oscars ceremony for it has yet to happen (as is the joy of magazine publishing!). But I can probably tell you who won the big four acting categories: Eddie Redmayne for The Theory of Everything, Julianne Moore for Still Alice, Patricia Arquette for Boyhood and J.K. Simmons for Whiplash. If I am wrong it will only be in the first instance: Redmayne may have lost to Birdman’s Michael Keaton in the Best Actor race. How do I know this? Believe me, I wish I was psychic, but they actually all won SAG (Screen Actor’s Guild) awards for these parts, along with Golden Globes and many other pre-Oscars critics’ awards. The SAG awards alone are such an accurate predictor of the Oscars that, over the past five years, 18 out of 20 SAG winners have gone on to win their Oscar category. Now, this creates a big problem for the Oscars – where is the suspense?! The awards for acting join with Best Picture and Best Director to create the Big Six Oscar categories. These six awards are really what the Oscars are based on but with the winners becoming more and more predictable, will people still tune in? It is plain ridiculous that every year, the best drama viewers can hope for is that one of the four main races may come down to two nominees. Indeed, the most exciting thing nowadays seems to be finding out who will get a nomination – from there it seems to be a lock-down, done deal! Granted, I have just presented it to you as a rather tricky conundrum to solve for the Academy; how can they keep people interested in a competition when they already know the result? But … we don’t actually know all of the results. Each year we are made aware of the winner and the four runners up, but what if (and this may be Hollywood anarchy) they didn’t release any names for nominations in the acting categories? How wonderful would it be to have everyone in Hollywood who has been in a good film that year turn up at the ceremony (much as they do anyway) and then have the top five called out through the night – in ascending order! It would certainly keep the audience watching until the very end and, since no one would have known to practice their ‘gallant loser’ face, we would get some wonderful reactions. The press and the actors would have an awful lot more to talk about after those awards than they do currently. Tune in to PostFeature on Wednesday at 6.30pm on Latest TV to see what Joseph and I have to say about this year’s winners and losers.

THURSDAY 26 Location, Location, Location Channel 4, 8pm Time for a spot of fantasy home shopping. Who’s in the market for a bolthole in North London close to transport links and without too many steps (one of today’s intrepid property hunters has been diagnosed with MS)? Yes? Then strap in! Plus, our second couple are looking to move from London to Bristol. Pretty places.
The Mentalist Channel Five, 10pm It’s always good when a boyfriend can help you out. Y’know... be worth an amnesty on the crimes that you’ve committed if you help with his apprehension. It’s the thought that counts. Jane and Lisbon are on assignment in Lisbon working with Erica Flynn, whose current flame is worth just such a tempting price to her.
Scorpion ITV2, 9pm What’s ace about watching a light-hearted drama about a group of geniuses saving the Western world (aka the freedomfighting pioneers of the United States), is that in explaining how they sorted everything out, you too can feel like a genius simply by dint of understanding their reasoning. Natch.
