EDITOR’S NOTE

I

t’s a peculiar and very particular type of feeling when you mistake one person for another at a glance. More specifically, when you realise that Nick Helm looks alarmingly like a dear friend of yours from many moons ago, and wonder what on earth Steve from Year 4 is doing working the Brighton comedy circuit with such an agonised expression on his face. If you want to see the man himself – that’s Nick Helm, not Steve from Year 4 – in action, you’ve the chance at the upcoming Gittins To Know You at Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar. See page 22. And from one uncanny experience to another ... are these the same characters who went by the moniker of ‘The Knights Who Say Ni’, Mr Creosote, and the wealth of other weird and wonderful imaginings from the brains of the Monty Python clan? Well yes, sort of. This

talented cast have brought a reimagining of the classic comedy Monty Python and the Holy Grail as a musical, with a freshly conceived music score and bags of laughs. Spamalot is coming to the Theatre Royal Brighton, and once more, you can catch this delightful performace yourselves – read more on page 13. We’re also welcoming two new columnists this week; Latest TV’s Biz Buzz chats all things local business, and Brighton & Hove Buses are sharing their top local travel destinations, all just a bus ticket away. Both are on page 14. “Knights, I bid you welcome to your new home. Let us ride to Camelot!” Erm, do pardon me. I seem to be getting carried away ... PEOPLE

Talisker Atlantic Challenge; A Taste of Italy Night; brickwork demo at Sussex Downs College

Brighton man needs local heroes A fearsome Brightonian has signed up to the greatest challenge of his life and needs local heroes to come on board. Nick McCulloch, 39, will be taking part in this year’s Talisker Atlantic Challenge – a race to row the Atlantic from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to Antigua. Along with his corower Tom Parker, 28, the transatlantic adventurers hope to raise £1million for three outstanding charities. Sussex Beacon will use the funds to help educate school children about HIV and support their campaign to fight the stigma of the virus. They are also helping Barnardo’s to combat child exploitation and aid support workers in protecting children from abuse and manipulation. Finally, the team are supporting Wallace and Gromit’s Grand Appeal to enrich and enhance the quality of life for children. A world first in ocean rowing, the team are broadcasting live 24/7 and online spectators will be able to track every one of their 1,000,000 strokes during their journey. This gives supporters the unique opportunity to follow Nick and Tom live with every push and pull as they burn over 20,000 calories a day during their gruelling three months at sea. To get them to the start line they are in search of heroes. For just a £20 donation people can submit selfies that will appear on

the boat and will travel across the ocean with them as an Atlantic Tempest Hero. Local businesses can also get involved; for just £1,000 they can become part of a limited and exclusive club and align themselves with the thrill and adventure of the Atlantic Tempest challenge as a Local Business Hero. Nick McCulloch said: “We need heroes to support us in this challenge of a lifetime as we race across the Atlantic. We’d love to see as many selfies as possible on our boat and know that all those heroes are helping us to raise money for three amazing causes. People can donate as much or as little as they like.” Brighton-based solicitors Howlett Clarke

have signed up as a main sponsor and will have their name and logo on the boat for the world to see. Nick added: “I’m incredibly grateful to Howlett Clarke for supporting us and hope other businesses in Sussex and their staff will get involved. All our main sponsors will see their branding on the boat, go to exclusive team events and be involved with a promotional package to show off their involvement.” To donate and view the benefits of being an Atlantic Tempest Hero, visit www.igg.me/at/athero or search ‘Atlantic Tempest Heroes’. Also find them on Twitter and Facebook by searching for ‘Atlantic Tempest’.

Building professionals visit Sussex Downs College Representatives from Chandlers Building Supplies and Porotherm (a sustainable clay block walling system) visited Sussex Downs College on Tuesday 24 February. The company led a demo for brickwork students on the Porotherm blocks – the new and more sustainable way to build houses. The event was fantastic for the students in keeping up to date with building trends and the interactive training session was a fantastic hands-on experience.

A Taste of Italy Night Authentic Italian food was on the menu for a cultural enrichment evening held at Kings Restaurant & Bistro, on campus at Sussex Downs College last week. A guest chef and three-piece band flew in from Italy especially for the event on Thursday 26 February. Chef Stefan Zanardi lent his expertise to Level 3 Catering students at Sussex Downs College, helping them to create an authentic Italian dining experience for guests. The night was called ‘A Taste of Italy’, and saw Kings Restaurant & Bistro transformed as live music and quality food combined to create a community festival feel. The restaurant was at full capacity with 90 guests in attendance.

Brighton and Hove City Council leader Jason Kitcat on the new city budget The dust has settled and a council budget has been set for another year. While it wasn’t the budget I was hoping for, a compromise had to be found. Brighton & Hove is in its 12th year of being a council in no overall control, and negotiation has had to play a large part of the decision-making in that time. The parties’ political differences remain, but the legal duty of setting a budget to ensure services could continue had to be paramount in finding a way forward. Letting the budget fail and leaving it to central government to set would have been a dereliction of duty, leaving many to wonder why they bothered voting in council elections. While some one-off money was agreed to delay cuts to some politically sensitive issues like children’s centres, the fundamental challenges remain: local public services cannot carry on as they are in the face of rising costs, growing population and people living longer than ever. We also have a tax base which has been falling ever behind inflation due to freezes and capped increases. Finally we have the very significant year on year cuts in our government funding on which we depend far more than councils in the rest of the developed world. This month the council will be setting out its corporate plan on how it will face those challenges ahead. The plan will require the agreement of councillors at a full council meeting. Its success will depend on the collaboration, creativity and dedication of everyone in the city, whether using or delivering public services. No longer can we sit back and assume that public service is done by ‘them over there’ for us. Keeping our city working and its residents healthy and safe is a collective endeavour for all of us.

THE VOTE

Too many bright students quit their degree because they have autism but no support. Sussex wants to help them stay the course ...

Chris Girvan

ussex University is stepping up its efforts to cater for people with autism. It is holding a summer school for the first time this year to help young people make the transition to new surroundings. The drop-out rate is much higher among people with autism even though they may be academically bright and wellsuited to their degree course. The higher education sector as a whole is coy about the numbers. But some experts have suggested that about seven in ten students with autism leave before the end of their first year. The summer school is in part a recognition of the need for familiarity and routine that is a characteristic of many people with autism. A key aim is to give some of these young people the chance to become more familiar with strange surroundings before they have to navigate them for real as a fresher. Chris Girvan, 44, of Hove, proposed the summer school at Sussex and will be the coordinator when it takes place in September. Sussex is one of the first universities to offer a summer school to students with autism.

S

Their numbers on campus have soared as part of the general expansion of higher education, including in Brighton. Mr Girvan is a PhD student in social cognitive development, focusing on children, education and technology. And he can often be found in the university’s ChaT Lab – or the Children and Technology Lab – part of the Developmental and Clinical Psychology Group. He said; “We are interested in how technology can be used to understand and support children working and playing together, at school and at home, in typical and atypical development, with peers, with parents and with teachers.” Mr Girvan is a governor of three local schools for children with a range of complex needs, the CDP Federation. The federation includes the Cedar Centre, Downs Park and Patcham House. Asked why he was running the summer

A key aim is to give these young people a chance to become more familiar with strange surroundings before navigating them for real school on the Sussex campus at Falmer, he said; “We’re providing a taster. We want it to enhance

social and vocational skills. We want the transition from school to be good.” It is part of the university’s Widening Participation agenda and this year Sussex will welcome a group of year 13 students who have been offered a university place. Mr Girvan, who will be helped by a team of volunteers, said; “We’ve got real expertise on campus and people who are willing to do this. “We’re aiming for 20 students. On the social and cultural side they’ll be assisted by a team of about 15 specialist ‘red coats’ who will be trained in coaching and mentoring. On top if that we’ll have eight or nine academic teaching staff providing sample lectures.” Mr Girvan is optimistic that the level of support on offer – and which is recommended by experts in the field – will pay dividends. If more young people with autism fulfil their potential and stay the course, it will be a lesson not just for Sussex but for the university sector as a whole. His drive to help sixth formers with autism to become fully fledged undergrads comes at a time when parents locally are worried about a potential policy setback. Mascot, a parent-led charity that supports families of children with autism, has concerns about possible changes to the rules for home to school transport. It has responded to a consultation carried out by Brighton and Hove City Council. The charity fears that some of the changes could be illegal and possibly life-threatening. It said; “There are a number of points in the proposed policy which we feel do not fully take into account the needs of children and young people with autism. Many children and young people with autism lack road safety and crossing the road, even just to reach a bus stop, can be life-threatening. If a child has a SEN (special educational need) and/or disability, the local authority should not seek to introduce additional criteria for school transport.” To contact Mascot, visit www.asc-mascot.com To learn more about the summer schools, email Mr Girvan on cg264@sussex.ac.uk

LATEST NEWS

This week’s headlines from across the city

BUDGET DEADLOCK It took two attempts but Brighton and Hove councillors finally broke a budget stalemate. With all three main parties advocating different ways of spending, a deadlock ensued. The Greens championed a 5.9% council tax rise, the Conservatives a freeze and Labour a 1.99% increase. This is all in the backdrop of the government cutting annual funding by more than £20 million. After seven hours of debating, a comprimise was finally reached between Labour and some Green members. All in all, everyone should go away happy, ready to fight the election in a few months time. However with a number of rebel Greens joining the Tories in voting the spending plans, an already tense election got a little spicier ...

SEAFRONT SPLASH Staying on the seafront, and plans for a £3 million open-air swiming pool have been unveiled. The proposal would see the long-derelict Peter Pan Playground site in Madeira Drive transformed into a 50m heated open air pool. With changing facilities, a café, indoor endless pools, exercise studios, facilities for cycling and running and onsite bike storage thrown in, it seems like this is something everyone can support. We'll find out when politicians discuss it at the end of this month.

WHEEL VS I Two major seafront attractions have clashed. That's after the Brighton Wheel was accused by the i360 of rowing back on a promise to close before the tower opens. The operators of the large Ferris Wheel now say they want to remain for five more years. Yet those who run the i360 rightly claim that would go against a long-standing agreement. But who is in the right? And is our city big enough for the both of them? Over to you, councillors.

ART ATTACK Celebrities from the world of sport and television have come together for a special art auction. The Big Heart Auction sees dozens of pieces of art listed on eBay – and all in the aid of Chestnut Tree House. Among those contributing were cricketer Phil Tufnell, Britain's Got Talent's David Walliams and Raymond Briggs, creator of The Snowman. Latest TV's Ceirney Eddie popped along to a private viewing at Brighton Dome's Founders Room to find out more.

DRUG-DRIVING CRACKDOWN A Brighton man has become the first man to be arrested under new drug-driving laws. The 35 year old was stopped when police carried out spotchecks in London Road. And as Latest TV found out, the message from police is simply: do not take the chance of getting round the rules. NOT BARRED A popular Brighton bar has won its battle to keep its late night licence. The Northern Lights in Brighton's Lanes was accused of breeching its conditions for operating more like a pub. Councillors allowed the venue to remain open. However, they said that four fifths of the capacity must be seated. They also ruled the Little East Street venue will have to stop serving alcohol at 1am. PRIDE NEWS Great news for Pride-goers in that Brighton's very own superstar DJ Fatboy Slim has announced he will headline this year's party in Preston Park. Expect this one to be a performance that very few will want to miss out on. CHARITY PUSH When a loved one is diagnosed with a rare disease, the easy option would be to break down. But one Worthing family has decided to fight on, setting up a charity for their daughter. Tracy Lynch set up Wolfram Syndrome UK when her 13-yearold daughter Jennifer developed the rare condition. And thanks to the support of the community, the group benefited from a new fundraising push known as Fortnightly Friday. To hear from Tracy and catch lots more, check out www.thelatest.tv. AND FINALLY ... Congratulations to Brighton's second football team Whitehawk who will play at The Amex in May. That's after they edged out Burgess Hill Town in the semi-final of the Parafix Sussex Senior Cup. The Hawks will play Lewes in the final – and Latest Sport will be down there with all of the action.

All very legitimate questions my dear readers, especially that last one! This week I thought I’d delve in to some of these questions. Latest TV’s flagship show Brighton Lights is always a rollercoaster of emotions. Four shows a week, eight guests, one band playing eight songs, live audience, animals, children, a functioning bar in the studio, 4–6 video inserts needing to be produced, filmed and edited each week and of course two presenters with huge riders! And all of this had to filmed on just one night. The first time the team were told this there were screams of ‘impossible!’ and ‘you’re mad!’, a few ‘it’ll never work!’ and ‘we’ll be driven to drink!’ ... many ‘we won’t have time’ and ‘what about the children?’ and a small amount of ‘please reconsider, please!’. But persevere we did! Although, admittedly many of us have been driven to drink. However, this is mainly due to the fully functioning bar in the studio and not a consequence of the huge pressures of the show. Brighton Lights is having a bit of time off right now. We’re reconceptualising the show – but we’ll be back! We’re going to make it much more community led and cover stories and entertainment relevant to our lovely city. Then we’ve got great shows like You Make It We Show It, PostFeature, Cook It!, International Chef Exchange and Bookenders. These shows comprise cooking, local filmmakers showcasing their amazing talent, film reviews and book reviews. All these shows are excellent in quality and content. Go check them out if you get the chance. TV listings can be found in the back of this magazine or online at www.thelatest.co.uk. Then click on the magazine! independent little boy as he headed into his teens, with new found confidence and independence. And as a parent, you have to both accept that and encourage that. But Chelsea? Seriously?? I can’t pretend it wasn’t a kick in the teeth. And in that horrible moment when I knew I’d lost him, I considered the options. Putting him up for adoption seemed plausible, but harsh. Away from football, there’s a deep love there and I guess we should see that through. I quite like being a dad, and although he wouldn’t admit it, I think he quite likes being my son. After weighing up the options – which included having a very stern chat explaining that I will never buy him a Chelsea shirt – I decided that I would just have to grin and bear it. Although his was the superior team, more prone to winning than my own, I advised him that football, like life, wasn’t all about the winning. It was about taking the highs with the lows (I wish my team won as much as his though). Anyway, weeks after this life changing event, Spurs beat Chelsea 5–3. I hoped that it would turn my son around and make him crawl back to Daddy, apologising for being wrong. It didn’t. It just made him more determined to ignore my pleas. And now, three months after he deserted me, we play each other in a Cup Final tomorrow. I’m taking him to the pub tomorrow to watch it together. If we win, I will be delighted but I won’t rub it in. If his team wins, I will never talk to him again. Let battle commence ...

looking on the bright side of life

The irresistable lunacy of Monty Python’s Spamalot gallops into the Theatre Royal Brighton

L

ovingly ripped off from the classic film comedy Monty Python And The Holy Grail, Spamalot is a kind-of new musical with a book by Eric Idle and an entirely new score for the new production (well, almost), created by Eric Idle and John Du Prez. Spamalot tells the legendary tale of King Arthur and the knights of the Round Table and features a bevy (or possibly a brace) of beautiful show girls and witch burnings (cancelled due to health and safety) not to mention cows, killer rabbits and French people. The show features fantastic tunes more magical than a Camelot convention, including ‘He Is Not Dead Yet’, ‘Knights Of The Round Table’ and of course the Nation’s Favourite Comedy Song (Reader’s Digest Poll 2010 – before it went bust), ‘Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life’. The 2015 Spamalot UK tour follows the hugely successful run at The Playhouse in London, directed by Christopher Luscombe. During the run at The Playhouse, there were 18 onstage moustache incidents, three suspected cases of swine flu (French pigs!), one outbreak of nits and 87 pairs of coconuts used. HEARD THE BUZZ?

GET ON BOARD

his month marks the debut of Biz Buzz, our business show on Latest TV, in which we take a look at business in the Brighton area. In the first edition, we feature the Sussex Business Awards, the Sussex Food and Drink Awards and a leading financial advisory firm heavily engaged in Sussex cricket star Michael Yardy’s testimonial year. It is a fine way to start the series. These three features cover much of what is great about business in Brighton and Sussex; the entrepreneurs, the thriving hospitality industry which caters for millions of tourists every year, and the generous nature of many successful businesses in the area. At PR company MatchFit Media, we understand all too well the challenges involved in starting a business. We are in our first year as a PR agency, after Laura and I clocked decades of experience in PR, publishing, journalism and writing in house for companies We launched MatchFit Media in early August 2014, focusing on the technology sector, but also taking on clients in the hospitality, food and environment, tourism and entertainment sectors. Our experience in getting our business off the ground has allowed us to understand the challenges faced by all new businesses – how to sell products and services; how to price what you do; how to control costs; when to take on more staff; how to apportion time, among other considerations. We have been round the block a few times – Ollie started as a Fleet Street reporter in the days before computers and mobile phones! – and can see how technology has generated opportunities but also made business life more complex. In business, how much time should you devote to writing content for social media channels such as Twitter and LinkedIn in the hope it will pave the way to more sales? Need you spend a lot of money on Google Adwords or on Facebook advertising? Should you invest a great deal of time and effort in networking? The last question is a particularly interesting one. The Brighton area is fortunate to be served by a number of excellent business organisations and networking clubs. They are all well run and work hard on behalf of their members. However, they may not be the right forum for finding the right clients for your business. Ultimately, businesses only succeed if they understand and find their market, getting the balance of sales endeavour, PR and revenuegenerating work right, to land and retain good clients. We will continue to tell you about business success stories in the Brighton & Hove area. ou may not realise it, but there are all sorts of interesting and unusual places to visit on the Brighton and Hove bus network, stretching out to our bounteous surrounding countryside – Eastbourne, the South Downs and Steyning, to name but a few. This week: Tunbridge Wells! You can travel on Regency Route 29 to Tunbridge Wells and sample its marvellous architecture, sophisticated shops, superb restaurants, fascinating antique shops and cosy cafés. Why not ride on the coat-tails of the spring sunshine and treat yourself to a purchase or two? The town is also home to the main station and headquarters of the Spa Valley Railway. Along with the souvenir shop tucked within the engine shed, you can also see historic locomotives and carriages undergoing restoration, and a model railway. And right next to that you’ll find The Pantiles – the famous colonnaded walkway, once the central meeting place for visiting gentry. After you’ve finished shopping you can stroll down to the Chalybeate Spring and sample the reputed ‘health-giving’ waters. Tunbridge Wells Museum houses one of the most impressive collections of Tunbridge ware (locally made marquetry) in the world, and exhibitions in the nearby Art Gallery change regularly. Entry to the Museum and Art Gallery next to the Town Hall is free, too, so no excuses – be sure to take a peep inside! The Regency villas, Victorian houses and white-painted ‘clapboard’ cottages of Tunbridge Wells create a feeling of light and space in the town, and The Common near The Pantiles and Calverley Grounds near the Great Hall are pleasant green spaces in which to take the air. The latter also has a popular pavilion-style café. Getting there: Take Regency Route 29, 29B or 29X (their frequency is up to every 10 minutes). Full timetable available at buses.co.uk/29. The route starts at Stop G, Churchill Square, travels along Lewes Road and onwards to Tunbridge Wells, dropping you off in the centre of the town. Head to www.visittunbridgewells.com for more details about Tunbridge Wells and attractions in the area. We have a range of tickets for day travel, from individual tickets to Family tickets – visit buses.co.uk to find out more!

Bardsley’s Fish & Chips

uch as I love the urban life, city dwelling is ingrained in my heart, I still have a touch of the country boy about me. If that sounds a little bit Nashville then watch this space and find out soon about my day at the recording studio – more of that very soon. By country, I mean a love of the outdoors and in particular of gardens. I’ve not had a garden for some years. To be honest, when I last had a garden it was a very needy beast indeed, requiring hours of work. Not that I resented it, well not much. Having a beautiful garden in which to relax is worth its weight in gold. At my new home I do not have a garden, I look out on someone else’s garden yes, but it’s not

M

DIGGING IN

City living, country style ... mine. That means I have the pleasure of their horticultural labours without the blood sweat and splinters. It’s nice too but it was failing to satisfy the need to plant. I have now taken this in hand and started to creat my own ‘hanging gardens’ ... my outside space is limited to a lovely wide stairwell, which has been painted brilliant white to reflect as much light as possible into my home. It works but the view can be stark, to say the least. Not any more. I have invested in plants and in containers. Miniature zinc tubs are now filled with hellebores and ferns and terracotta pots are full of hard and soft herbs. It’s starting to look good but in truth it lacks height, it’s a deep space after all. So I have now started to propagate seeds in funny little pots. I toddled off to the garden centre in search of suitable delights to add the height I desired. There was so much on offer, things I knew and things that I had never heard of. In the end I decided to stick with a balance of the scented and the edible. So now my window ledges are filled with pots of peas, beans and my favourite – sweet peas.

 COMPETITIONS

When I returned there were shoots, little bright green rays of life that filled my heart with joy I watched them closely, too closely, for days, and nothing happened. Then I went away for a few days and when I returned there were shoots, little bright green rays of life that filled my heart with joy. Symbols of a new start, I thought, then quickly curbed my tendency to that sort of soppy nonsense. The shoots are doing well and, if they are successful and grow they will fill my outside space with colour and perfume that will cheer me. That’s all, they’re plants, nothing more. If they grow that will be good and if they don’t I will go and buy some more; that’s life, and that’s death too, when it comes to greenery. I guess that is why I have always favoured cut flowers to house

plants. House plants come with the ever present threat of death and a sense of failure. Cut flowers come with no more than the promise to look good for a week or a little longer. They seldom disappoint in that sense. Of course if the sweet peas are a success I will get the double pleasure as they thrive on being cropped. The peas and beans I hope will do the same. I must go now though as I have a pressing appointment with a packet of chive seeds and some flat leaf parsley, then a trip to Boots to buy a decent nail brush to get my fingers back in shape. It’s a messy business, this small time gardening malarkey.

AUSTRIAN REDS

Wine expertise from Annabel Jackson or most, Austrian wine is synonymous with white wine – Riesling, and the increasingly trendy Gruner Vertliner. But, says Josef Umathum of Umathum wine estate, some parts of Austria are unsuited to white wine production. In the warm and dry easterly region of Neusiedlersee in Burgenland, where he has 30 hectares under cultivation, red grapes ripen beautifully. Interesting in Austria is that winemakers are not going down the international variety road and focusing on Pinot Noir, as they do in Germany. Rather, they engage with their local grape varieties such as Blaufrankisch, St Laurent, and Austria’s most important red grape, Zweigelt. Rosa Biodynamic estate Umathum was one of the first producers, together with names such as Zantho, his joint venture with Wolfgang Peck, to focus on quality Zweigelt. Made well, this gastronomic wine with soft tannins and cherry-spice flavours can age for 5–7 years, Zweigelt or even up to 20 years for premium examples. Zweigelt is a cross of Blaufrankisch and St Laurent. Blaufrankisch (known as Kekfrankos in Hungary) has quite thick skins and the tannins can be somewhat “rough” says Umathum, meaning that it is not so popular among the Austrian wine drinking community which prefers soft and fruity wines. The Umathum Joiser Kirshgarten 2009, however, shows super rounded tannins balanced with expressive acidity. St Laurent is one of the parents of Pinot Noir. It is easier to handle in the vineyard than its offspring, and is well adapted to the Austrian climate. It can make deeply coloured, velvety, densely concentrated wines, and makes for a good (and inexpensive) alternative to Pinot Noir. While there are a few good examples of Austrian Pinot Noir emerging, they do not generally fit into the German quality arena. However, Umathum says wines made with St Laurent can easily age for 10 years, and become more and more like Pinot Noir as they mature.

t’s getting warmer. And with that we have started to dig the outside raised beds ready to plant a whole array of things for our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) Cosmetic Beauty Range project. Thank you to Duncan from Jigsaw Gardening for donating the tools. Also we have been taking our kite flying outside, rather than racing them down the science corridor. I am very grateful to Philip Avery, Associate Headteacher at Bohunt Academy, for giving me the various STEM initiatives and especially this one of constructing kites and flying them. It really is a fantastic topic to get the pupils engaged with. Sharing good practice in STEM projects is essential for ensuring that educational funds are invested effectively and provide maximum benefit to Britain’s school children – thanks also to Scott Atkinson from Midhurst Rother College for providing the ‘hovercraft kits’ and the ‘microbot football challenge’ kits. The Da Vinci 3D printer we have purchased has caused quite a stir throughout the department; “cool” is the word I hear the most. Staff have been putting in requests: can you print a heart, an enzyme, the world? The first model we build though, was “the death star”. Yes, it is educational since we have so many pupils recognising it ... and then we fill their heads with the science! The STEM coding club is also buzzing thanks to the input of Dr Kate Howland’s MSc students – Anthony Troy, Joel and Melenie. We are awaiting to hear whether we have won the Royal Partnership Grant to fund an ambitious Raspberry Pi/Arduino project (fingers crossed). I do love my job, and think every school should have a STEM centre. Since the STEM centre is run through the science department it ensures that students are getting a taster of applied science, technology and engineering delivered all at the same time.

FILM

BRIGHTON’S ARTY

 DEAR WHITE PEOPLE

THE BEAUTIFUL SOUTH

Jessica Kellgren-Hayes

efore every Sundance screening of his new film Dear White People, first-time writer/director Justin Simien issued a disclaimer; “For all the white people in the audience, on behalf of all the black people in the world, you most definitely have permission to laugh.” Laugh they did. The film even went on to win the Special Jury Prize. Its title refers to an amusingly demagogic radio show at (fictional) Ivy League college, Winchester University, hosted by the militantly revolutionary, biracial film student Samantha White (Tessa Thompson) – who believes that, due to their slang, yearning for fried chicken and freaking out when their hair gets wet, Gremlins is actually about white people’s fear of black urban encroachment. Her broadcasts to the campus are generally edicts along the lines of; “Dear White People, the minimum requirement of black friends needed to not seem racist has been raised … to two. Sorry, your weed man Tyrone doesn’t count.” And; “Dear White People, please stop touching my hair. Does this look like a petting zoo to you?” The film opens with news of a “race war” on campus that has been set off thanks to an offensive black-themed Halloween party given by some white students (complete with a mock-freestyle rap contest, blackface, toy guns, and “purple drank”). It then flashes back to the individuals and incidents that helped to create this alleged racial conflagration. Winchester’s administration passes a randomised housing policy in an attempt to break up the black students, who mostly live together. In retaliation, Sam and her black power clique pelt all nonresidents (that’s ‘white people’) with eggs when they try to enter. Not everyone in the house embraces Sam’s radicalism; Troy, the clean-cut son of the Dean who’s dating the white daughter of the University president, doesn’t want to ruin his chances of running for office; Coco, a dark-skinned girl from inner-city Chicago, who wants to be mainstream enough to get on TV; Lionel (played by Tyler James Williams from Everybody Hates Chris), a gay, aspiring reporter with a giant afro who doesn’t believe he fits in anywhere. They are brought together by outrage at the group of mostly white students throwing an “African-American” themed party … and a hatred of Tyler Perry films. Simien’s ambitious goal was to pay homage to films that mix humour with racial social commentary, like Hollywood Shuffle or School Daze. The concept trailer made to fund the film was provocative enough to be commented on by CNN. Sensing the opportunity, Simien quit his job and finished the script. Although the film’s stance is as a skewering of racial attitudes it is also a touching story of the longing for acceptance. The satire and humour manages not to be contradicted by the sincerity of its message. It is a true testament to the talents of this young director and his impeccable cast. This is a film you may have missed, but one you really shouldn’t.

‘Little Wing’ by Catriona Millar

et’s face it, when it comes to artists Brighton is just plain greedy. We attract the most exceptional talents from, well, pretty much the universe. And I don’t think it’s because of the smell of deep-fried doughnuts wafting from the pier (although that probably penetrates a good few miles). One of the Arty newcomers who’ll be featuring in this year’s book has been previously acclaimed as one of Scotland’s foremost figurative oil painters – and ranked by the Sunday Herald newspaper in the top five most collectable Scottish artists. Luckily for us, in 2012 Catriona Millar headed down to what she terms ‘the beautiful south’ and is now based in Eastbourne. Catriona describes herself as a ‘people painter’ and we love the narrative pull of her works – imbued with hidden stories that the viewer can only surmise. There’s also a compelling textural quality that draws you in through its multiple layers. Catriona strongly believes that her move from Scotland has had a positive effect on her work and her creative spirit (see … Brighton strikes again!). And as a tutor as well, she says she enjoys the camaraderie of her class, being surrounded by so many interesting, talented people (well we’ve definitely got a surfeit of those). ‘Trilby’ by Catriona Millar Don’t miss: Finnish sculptor Johanna Häiväoja and her French partner François Blosseville are having their first Brighton exhibition at 35 North Gallery on North Road. You may have experienced the dramatic expressions of these two Dieppe-based sculptors previously, as they have been showing their work for a number of years as guests of the Fiveways Artists Group. Look forward to an astonishing selection of sculptural works in wood, paper and resin, as well as drawings and wall-mounted pieces. From 7 March until 4 April. www.artymagazines.com 35 North Gallery

STEPPING OUT A thrilling line up of inventive new work and classic repertoire from Rambert Britain’s national dance company ambert returns to Brighton from Wed 25 – Sat 28 March with a thrilling line-up of new work and classic pieces from some of the most inventive and celebrated dancemakers around. The programme includes the return of Christopher Bruce’s irresistible Rooster, an ambitious new work from Alexander Whitley and Mark Baldwin’s The Strange Charm of Mother Nature, inspired by the science of the cosmos. A smash hit in Brighton in 2014, back by popular demand, Rooster is a celebration of the swinging sixties set to music by the Rolling Stones. A series of courtship dances performed by sharp-suited, snake-hipped men and strong, sassy women are accompanied by some of the Stones' most famous tunes, including ‘Not Fade Away’, ‘Paint It Black’, ‘As Tears Go By’, ‘Sympathy for the Devil’ and ‘Little Red Rooster’. This thought provoking work, designed to make audiences look at dance in new ways, is a continuation of Whitley’s collaboration with visual artists Tuur Van Balen and Revital Cohen. The work will be accompanied by a new score from Icelandic composer Daniel Bjarnason. The Strange Charm of Mother Nature is a new work from Rambert’s Artistic Director Mark Baldwin, which premiered in September 2014. The work is inspired by particle physics and the recent discovery of the Higgs-Boson ‘God Particle’, continuing Baldwin’s fascination with science which has seen previous pieces inspired by the theories of Einstein and Darwin. The Strange Charm of Mother Nature sees dancers fizz with the energy of the minuscule building blocks that created life, the universe and everything, to a musical score of Bach’s ‘Brandenburg Concerto No.3’, Stravinsky’s ‘Dumbarton Oaks’ and a new piece by Cheryl FrancesHoad. veryone must be so looking forward to this Thursday. Yes, Thursdays herald in almost the beginning of the weekend, but this Thursday in particular is one marked in my diary for at least the past month as a chance to see a number of my favourite comedians all on one stage, and it's one of the smallest ones in Brighton's happy comedy scene. Yup, I'm only talking about March's Gittins To Know You, Brian Gittins' monthly but for the most part overlooked show in which he features sets from some of the biggest names in comedy he's come across – as well as open spots sourced locally – and it's on at Sticky Mike's Frog Bar. I, for one, am guilty of looking at past line-ups and just not going to Gittins To Know You, because I've decided that I've left it too late to get tickets and that with a set list like this the evening will naturally be sold out from way back. I'm talking headline names like Al Murray, Harry Hill and more. People who easily sell out several nights in a row at the Theatre Royal Brighton on their own. But, I

had been reliably informed, I wasn't always right. Lots of others had come to the same incorrect conclusion that I had, meaning that I could have got hold of a ticket on the night. Let my loss be a lesson to everyone. Live comedy needs people to check, in order for us to continue to have these marvellous shows on our doorstep. This month's headliner is the incomparable Nick Helm. Currently on our tellyboxes with a second series of BBC3's sitcom Uncle, as well as a number of other TV projects “in the works”, where do you think those magic ideas and brilliant songs come from? Thin air? It's these smaller gigs that breathe life into material that goes on to entertain millions. Stewart Lee's recent visit to town at the Brighton Dome's Concert Hall was honestly billed as having material prepared ahead of his forthcoming series of Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle. It makes us a part of the magical comedy process. Nick's not alone though. Also on the Gittins To Know You bill are Ed Aczel, Mae Martin and – of course – our host Brian Gittins. Plus, as the poster refers to them, ‘Brian’s Naughty Open Spots’. The first time I saw Brian I'm sorry to say he grated on me like nothing else. The second time I stole myself for his set, as he was on a bill I otherwise adored, and found that despite myself I was roaring with laughter and had been won over utterly. He's so unlike anyone else on the comedy circuit that it can take you by surprise, but once the groove is got it's well worth opening your mind just that little bit more than usual. Brain Gittins is a gem and an assault from the core of your funny bone. Gittins to Know You, Sticky Mike's Frog Bar, Thursday 12 March, 7.30pm, £8

THe CHampS Hailing from the Isle Of Wight, the brothers talk albums, geography and creative direction with Jeff Hemmings ...

T

he brothers Michael and David Champion hail from the Isle of Wight, born and raised (and still living) in the tiny village of Ventnor. "It definitely is a bit behind the times," says younger brother David. "If you look at some of the seaside places like Shanklin or Sandown they look the same as they did 50 years ago when they were in their heyday, maybe in need of a lick of paint. But it's quite charming in a way, it’s quite evocative. It's a different pace to life, people are a bit out of it to be honest, cruising around not knowing what's really going on..." Last February the brothers released their debut album, Down Like Gold, an album that marked them out as something special, their hymnal voices fused to a folk-pop backdrop, bait like where Fleet Foxes meets Bombay Bicycle Club. Last month, and just 364 days after their debut they have released the follow up, Vamala, which develops the template a little further, mixing up stripped

back acoustic rootsy folk with some bigger production numbers, more poppy in feel. "We figured that these days people have such short attention spans, if you leave it too long, however good the last

album was, people forget! We had the songs, so we thought there's not much point waiting, or resting on our laurels." And the name Vamala? "It's a word that came to Mike. He thought it was a Croatian girls name, but found out it wasn't, so he's not really sure where it came from. It doesn't seem to exist as a word!" How did the brothers get it together, so to speak? "We have always grown up listening to music together. We were quite late taking up guitar, about 16 / 17, and then we were both in separate bands and we got to an age where we thought this is a bit stupid really, let's do something together. Just makes sense. We grew up influenced by the same things and have the same tastes, so I think we were pulling in the same direction, creatively. We still listen to the same things…" Living on the relatively isolated Isle of Wight, although somewhat isolated, does have the benefit of being the location where Bestival, the hugely popular festival, takes place – it certainly helped them realise that yes, they could make a go of it. “I think, sub-consciously, it’s been quite a big influence on us. It showed us an alternative, that you could do music as a job. Bands would come here and we’d say 'that looks fun, let's do that'! Otherwise it may never have occurred to us." The Johnny Cash Roadshow

I Am Hamlet

It's one thing reducing the works of Shakespeare into a two hour show; it's quite another reducing the history of comedy. But our three American friends pull it off ... just. In truth, the show needed an audience, and unfortunately a wet Saturday afternoon did nothing for numbers. However, those who braved the climate were treated to an intelligent, educational and above all funny take on comedy's history – starting with our Neanderthal cousins, through classic Greek, Tudor theatre, variety hall and bang up to date with some contemporary references. The small bit of improv for me fell flat, but above all you couldn't really fault the content.

to enjoy playing the music as much as we did hearing and feeling it. The Balafon solos were bordering on outrageous, and as the crowd stamped and roared until the trio came back for an encore, the energy in the room was palpable. Brighton Dome Studio Theatre, 1 March 2015 ★★★★★ Enna Andrews

This well put together two hander showed an amateur theatre director desperate for a Hamlet, until he meets Simon. This dark comedy highlights ZLS’s debut show as one of many strong shows to come. Paul H. Bentinck’s Tom was a very apt portrayal of a director, whose ego gets in the way every time. His high energy showed an Arthur Lowe-esque style of comedy which is rarely seen now and was engaging. As for Warren Saunders (Simon), he contrasted well with a character who was not all he seemed. His dynamics, however, needed to change more abruptly to heighten the comedy. Dukebox Theatre, 27 February 2015 ★★★★★ Sascha Cooper

Poldark BBC1, 9pm Drama set in Cornwall in the 1780s, based on the novels by Winston Graham. Ross resolves to reopen his family mine with Francis.
