oes anyone else have bittersweet childhood memories of dusty church halls, clingy leotards, hairspray overkill and shoes that were oh-so-tight-but-supposed-tobe-that-way? I’m talking ballet classes, of course. Or tap, jazz, modern ... whichever way your adolescent dancing feet may have been inclined. I remember it well, and can only imagine the dizzy heights that may have been achieved had I carried on dancing into my teenage years and beyond. Well, here’s raising a glass to the dedicated few, and why not celebrate the achievements of dancers in the arts by checking out Rambert at the Theatre Royal Brighton at the end of this month! Read more about it on page 15. We all know that Brighton & Hove is a progressive city – it wasn’t long ago that chefs
and restaurateurs alike would have balked at the timid question; “erm, anything for vegans?” Well, yah boo sucks to the nay-sayers ... not any more! And we have Vegfest UK in particular to thank for continuing to fight the good fight for veggie lovers countrywide. Still skeptical? You’ll be surprised at the culinary delights on offer over the weekend of 28–29 March, not to mention expos, demos, live music and comedy. See page 10 for a reminder on how to get involved. Now do pardon me whilst I strap on some ballet flats and take a moment to pirouette around the office in wistful recollection ... ola! Apologies for the foreign greeting, but I am half Colombian and assume that 'hola' is well known for meaning 'hello'. I'm also half Italian so, 'ciao!'. However, I was born in the lovely Shoreham-By-Sea, and my life has always been Brighton centred. It is great to finally formally introduce myself, as you may have already seen me on Latest TV presenting the sports and news, and interviewing members of the local community as well as local celebrities. It's a dream job for me after taking my Journalism Masters degree in London. I still feel though that sport is the love of my life – not reading it, not watching it, but actually doing it! I used to play tennis for Sussex and was part of the LTA for many years. But that moment came when I had to choose, and developing a media career won. I was sad at first but now I can say that I have no regrets. Latest TV came at a perfect time for me. I was scared to be a part of a broadcast media company, but I soon realised how much this was meant for me. I am surrounded by a great team who make the station the success it is. I am extremely proud to be a part of it.”

atiana Sanchez is one of the young people making Brighton the global hotspot it is, intervewing the local community and celebrities on a daily basis. Besides her superb television work for Brighton's own station, she has another passionate interest – providing free dentistry for third world children. Her step dad Nigel Kennedy (known as 'no-pain Nigel!') and others are Brighton dentists who have formed "Dental Mavericks" – they go to different countries giving free treatment to children who have no access to dental care. Many of the children are in pain or are afraid because they have never been to a dentist, but by the end of it, they love it and are so grateful for the Dental Mavericks' visit. Tatiana will go with them this year when they visit Morocco, to assist with interacting with the children and providing the dental care they need. Brighton and Hove City Council leader Jason Kitcat on leading change I’ve been reflecting on the challenges of leading change inside and outside of the council recently. A few days ago I spoke at a panel event hosted by the University of Brighton to reflect on 40 years of the Equal Pay Act. There was no doubt amongst participants that there was still much work to do, and some interesting reflections that ‘fair pay’ may be a preferred term in today’s diverse world. I was asked to reflect on our experience in 2013 of delivering a system of pay and allowances for the council that was fair and compliant with equal pay law. No easy task even when the majority affected increased their take home pay and the minority who saw a detriment were compensated for three times their annual loss. In a very different example, resistance to change has also arisen: I’ve recently had to speak about plans now underway to remove half of the cash parking machines on our streets. They are 15 years old and would cost £3,000 each to replace at a time when the use of cash is in decline yet the costs of collecting it are rising. We haven’t taken up the radical Westminster City Council model where, eight years ago, they removed all the machines in favour of phone payment. Instead our approach has been to first introduce optional payment by phone two years ago followed by a reduction in parking machines this year. Cash payment at machines and 150 PayPoint shops remains, as do card payment machines. Leaders can’t simply always follow public opinion, that risks a permanent status quo. Leading opinion, showing positive alternatives, must be a part of public leadership in my view, even if the journey isn’t always the most comfortable.

Interim principal Monica Box said that City College had a financial plan in place and would put students first he interim principal of City College said that she would get its finances back on track as quickly as possible. And students and their studies would remain the college’s top priority. Monica Box took charge just over a week ago. She said steps had already been taken to put in place a financial recovery plan. She is an experienced principal and financial turnaround specialist who said that she would get a grip of the spending controls needed to bring the college back within budget. “It’s a very promising task,” she said, “because the college has real opportunities to grow Monica Box even in this difficult funding climate.” suppliers on time and to file its The number and range of outstanding accounts for the past courses – and the staff needed as a financial year, having missed a result – would be reviewed, with December deadline. the unions kept informed, she said. But her aim would be to achieve “efficiencies” before deciding whether more jobs had to go. Monica acknowledged that a small number of students out of the thousands at City College were not entered for an exam last year and said; “Clearly what happened with the 37 students in terms of examinations this year was not just regrettable but completely counter to anything this college would ever want to see again, but learners, their programmes and their assessments are our priorities and they can be “The prospect for a new senior confident that that’s how the team coming in, say, six months’ college will proceed.” time is a good prospect. The college has real opportunities to grow even in this difficult funding climate
first thing that struck me when I arrived at the college was its friendly, vibrant atmosphere and the positive attitude of staff and students. “Brighton is such a young, forward-looking city that’s rich in potential so to be the main further education provider in a location like that makes the college incredibly well-placed to go from strength to strength. I think the ‘engine room of the local economy’ description really hits the nail on the head. “Brighton and Hove has such a young demographic, local businesses will be relying on the college to provide them with well-trained employees so I very much see the college being at the heart of future growth.” The rebuilding of the Pelham Street campus had not been cancelled but would not go ahead in the immediate future while the finances were stabilised. But work on the £9 million new construction centre at the City College East campus, in Wilson Avenue, would start soon. But the college would continue to sponsor City Academy, formerly Whitehawk Primary School. Monica added; “Most of my work is with colleges that have recovery plans or are about to have one. Here, there is a financial recovery plan. There have been issues, otherwise the college wouldn’t have a financial recovery plan, and they were around financial controls. “The key issues were less around income than how the income was used – the control of that income if you like. It’s not about it being spent wrongly but about how it was controlled. “The sector is a turbulent sector in terms of funding at the moment and there are reductions for all colleges in their 19-plus incomes.” She said that the college had annual income of about £20 million – and it expected that figure to be cut. She added; “At this stage we’re not looking at a savings figure, we’re looking at efficiencies and meeting our plans. “We will be looking at staffing but we would have to look at that anyway. We have to look at the curriculum first and we will be sharing that with the unions.”

This week’s headlines from across the city
THINNER BLUE LINE Hundreds of jobs are to go as police chiefs announce cuts across Sussex. The announcement was made this afternoon when bosses revealed their spending plans for the next five years. The plans will see 500 police officer roles and 200 staff roles cut by the end of 2020 as the force tries to make more than £50 million of savings. A further 300 posts are also due to go in order to help meet the projected funding gap, which those in charge said was caused by central government budget cuts. Unison reps warned they would put officers under unacceptable stress and undermine public safety.
WHALEFEST SPLASH This weekend saw the biggest event of its kind make a splash in Brighton. Whalefest 2015 is a celebration of all things whales and dolphins – with a serious message behind it all. Among those speaking are wildlife experts Michela Strachan and Steve Backshall. Preparations began last week with the installation of a giant whale graveyard near the West Pier. It certainly was an eyecatching way to raise awareness of the event.

PARKING ROW One of the city's most-established voluntary organisations is on the brink – thanks to parking restrictions. Thousands of people have passed through the doors of Brighton Sea Cadets since it was established. But new restrictions near its Brewer Street HQ, just off Lewes Road, means the group is spending £2,500 a year on subsidising volunteers' parking permits. A request to the council for restricted parking permits for volunteers has been knocked back – with those in charge saying no other group in the city has ever made such a request. Those at the charitable group will now have to wait until November at the earliest before finding out if town hall bosses will look into the issue city-wide. STUB IT OUT Thousands of people are being urged to follow the trend and ditch smoking. The plea came on No Smoking Day, when new figures revealed more than 2,000 people kicked the habit in our city in the last year. But what more can be done? Well, when we spoke to experts, they said e-cigarettes were one of the best ways to start. But if people were serious then it's worth getting advice from
www.nosmokingday.org.uk or calling 0300 123 1044. TRAVELLER SITE A new £1.25 million pound travellers site is to opened yesterday (Monday). West Sussex County Council says it hopes its transit site in Chichester will reduce the number of unauthorised encampments across the area. Worthing council leader Dan Humphries said he was pleased at the progress. But some have asked if the site – which has nine pitches – is large enough to support the number of groups that visit the area. SPRAY MAKEOVER When a Brighton landlord received a request to spruce up his property, he could have gone all magnolia. But Viaduct Road is now a sea of colour after Brighton artist Aroe MSK painted the mural across two house fronts in the street. Locals are split on whether it's a good idea.
And Brighton and Hove City Council said it was investigating whether it would be taking any action over the mural. CURTAIN FALLS One of Brighton's best loved and notorious entertainers has died. Brian Ralfe lived in the city all his life, and in between serving in the Falklands and standing for election, he put on a host of shows around the city. But he passed away last week of a suspected heart attack when he was on holiday in Egypt. A true entertainer, Brian was friend to the stars – such as Eastenders' June Brown, politicians and entertainers. He brought a touch of colour to Brighton when homosexuality was illegal. Those who paid tribute to him agreed he will be sadly missed.

SCALLY WAG He’s back! Chatting life, laughing and empty nest syndrome – It’s John Bishop: Supersonic
ollowing last year’s hugely successful sell-out UK arena tour, John Bishop announces that he will be performing his critically acclaimed Supersonic show in a select few venues, in March 2015. “I’m thrilled to be performing Supersonic again,” John said. “The reaction to last year’s tour was amazing, so I’m really looking forward to getting back on stage. I hope the fans are too!” The 47-year-old, who has been happily married to Melanie for the past 21 years and is the proud father of three sons, has built up a reputation as perhaps the finest, and the funniest, live comedian currently at work in the UK. So what is it that makes John such a special stand-up? His act can be summed up by all those adjectives beginning with ‘C’: charismatic, coruscating, compelling, charming and comic. He also possesses that most valuable quality for a stand-up; a rare likability. Audiences simply love being in his company. They feel like they know him and see him as a bloke it would be great to accompany on a night out. The critics are equally enamoured: The Times comments that “Bishop has funny bones,” The Daily Mirror calls him “a fabulously gifted comedian,” while The Daily Telegraph describes him as “unimprovable ... a comedy superstar”. John was widely praised in 2012 for raising £4.2m for Sport Relief when he heroically cycled, rowed and ran from Paris to London. The stand-up comic is also a talented actor with starring roles in the teen drama Skins, Ken Loach’s movie Route Irish and Jimmy McGovern’s lauded BBC One drama series Accused, but stresses that nothing beats the buzz of performing live comedy. “How can I explain the feeling of doing stand-up? It’s where I feel more comfortable than anywhere else. It just feels such a privilege to be performing in front of an audience. It’s an incredible feeling to bring joy to all those people and so nice to get personal

messages from people afterwards. They say things like; ‘We were going through a terrible time, but watching your show gave us a real lift’. That’s very, very gratifying.” Getting his teeth into the subject, John continues: “The best moments on any tour are those nights when something just pops into your head and comes straight out of your mouth. Everyone’s laughing and I’m laughing as well, as I wasn’t expecting it. I love those moments. When you’re testing out material, beforehand you don’t always know if it’s funny. But once you perform it, you don’t have to do a survey afterwards – you know instantly whether it’s funny or not.” John never just sits back on his laurels. He is already immensely popular; on his last sell-out Rollercoaster tour in 2012, he played to 500,000 people, and the DVD of the show topped the charts. But he is still always striving to give his fans an even better show. According to the stand-up, “There is always a moment in the run-up to a big tour where I become very critical of myself because I want people to have a great night and get real value for money. That means I have to keep pushing my standards.” Ever self-effacing, John adds; “You have to avoid getting drawn into the world of showbiz. You have to be careful not to become famous for its own sake. You don’t want people to forget why you’re famous. That’s what’s good about stand-up. You can’t do that. You have to deliver. You can’t just walk on stage and be famous!” John has a marvellous rapport with his fans – another factor that makes his live shows so memorable. “It’s all positive. The more well-known I am, the more people want to come up and chat. There is no small talk – it’s like I’m in a middle of a conversation with them. It’s surprising how many ask, ‘How are Melanie and the boys?’ I keep thinking, ‘Do I know this person?’ But that’s great
because it means people think they know me very well.” So what themes are tackled in Supersonic? The comic reveals that much of the show focuses on his home life. “This is me getting back to being me. The last tour was about the rollercoaster of becoming famous. But that’s happened now. So these shows are not a list of the things I’ve been doing in ‘celeb-land’. It is about the norms of domestic life. It’s about getting back to the core of what I do.” One of the topics he will be addressing in Supersonic is “...empty nest syndrome. We’re a hair’s breadth away from it. Two of my boys have already left for university. That has had a massive effect – in a way I didn’t realise until they went. We may be about to encounter the empty nest, but at least it will be cheaper to go on holiday!”
Could he have predicted the level of success he has attained? “I’ll always have the feeling that someone is about to tap me on the shoulder and say, ‘This wasn’t really meant for you’. I’m getting a bit more used to it now, but I’m still waiting for that tap on the shoulder. The moment you think you belong is when you realise that actually everyone else has left you behind.” “Stand-up to me is essential. I don’t know what I would be if I stopped doing it. Everything else will fall away. TV definitely will because fame is transient, and other people overtake you in the fame stakes. But performing stand-up and making people laugh – whether it’s an arena or a fifty-seater – is something I want to do for as long as I can.” Details of John Bishop’s Supersonic tour can be found at www.johnbishoponline.com

I went to college to study hairdressing instead – more girls ... my favourite subjects at school and one that I really understood. The whole creative process really gave me a lot of pleasure and set me on the long and winding road to the things I’m doing now. The art went so well, in fact, that I continued to pursue it throughout my early years, accumulating an O-level (one of four I might add) and my one and only A-level. I was encouraged to go to art school but by this time I was ‘dabbling’ in drink and drugs and chasing girls, and this was a period that kick-started a whole decade of ill-informed decisions and no real direction (I went to college to study hairdressing instead – more girls). Anyway, fast forward twenty years and I’m a man with a clearer idea of what makes me happy, and painting and drawing, despite the period of inactivity, is back in my life. We get there in the end, don’t we?

went through a bit of rediscovery recently – something I was forced to do at school, quite enjoyed and went on to be reasonably good at. I’m talking about art. Painting and drawing and the like. And it was all by accident really. But a lovely accident that could get me back into the wonderful world of art and all of its beautiful escapism. In which I am professionally trained (escapism, not art). It all came about through a brilliant local charity who asked me to paint a picture to donate to an auction, which would then be sold for millions and the charity would never have to fundraise again. They even supplied me with a range of paints and an easel. All that was missing was the paint brushes and an inquisitive moustache. The remit from the charity was clear; paint whatever you like but nothing rude, like a penis or boobies (it’s a fine line this art thing eh?). This was very exciting for me. And it was a very familiar feeling of excitement. Something I remember as a child. I grew up in a small village in Nottinghamshire, with my parents and two younger brothers. I had a wonderful childhood but in terms of things to do for kids, it was limited, compared to growing up

My two brothers loved the great outdoors and spent a lot of time burning up country lanes on their motorbike or shooting stuff out of trees with their air rifle. UNLOCKING POTENTIAL
News and chat from the frontline of science and technology at PACA
his week, Quinty (the science tech) went down to the harbour early to bring back various fish and fish heads for the pupils to dissect. The aim of the project was to remove the lens from the fish eyeball. The job of the lens is to bend light in order to magnify the image of what the fish is looking at onto the retina at the back of the eye. The fish eye lens is perfectly round like a pearl bead, not convex in shape like ours. The special structure of the lens means that the fish eye can see things in very sharp focus. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed the activity and I’m hoping that we can do more in the way of marine STEM education, considering our proximity to the sea. We then moved onto astronomy. The link might not seem immediately obvious but there is one: lenses and telescopes. A refracting telescope uses lenses to form an image. In astronomical refractors, both the large objective lens and the eyepiece lens are convex. The objective lens focuses light from a distant object, forming an inverted image. The eyepiece lens then magnifies the image. Astronomers see the images upside down, but the orientation doesn’t matter to them.

Sir Isaac Newton went on to develop the reflecting telescope. He replaced the convex glass lens in the refracting telescope with a curved mirror which reflected and focused the light (ref: Corning Museum of Glass). In doing so he overcame the problem of chromatic aberration, where images were surrounded by a colourful halo due to light passing through the glass lens. Going back to fishes though, this is another favourite quote of mine from Einstein: “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”

Key free-to-enter events include the Big Sussex Market on New Road on Good Friday 3 and Easter Saturday 4 April, and the huge seafront Sussex & The World Weekend on Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 May which this year includes the Live Food Show, Brighton Beer & Cider Festival, Rockinghorse Children’s Food Festival, Brighton Wine Festival, a host of English Wine Week activities and masterclasses, and a craft furniture installation created by Yelo Architects and FareShare Brighton & Hove using food packaging waste. “Our city’s and county’s growing reputation as one of the UK’s leading food and drink destinations and producers has made the festival team radically revisit our programme of events”, said festival director Nick Mosley. “This year – with the generous support of our sponsors and supporters – we’re spreading the festival over four main periods to create a platform to showcase the brilliant food, drink and hospitality offering, whilst nurturing the many small and independent restaurants, bars, retailers and producers we enjoy in Brighton and Sussex. We’re also running events later in the year – including a further Sussex & The World Weekend over the August Bank Holiday and a new Big Sussex Christmas Market on 5–6 December.” Surrounding the free-to-enter weekend events, there is an extensive programme of tours, trails, tastings and themed dinners.

recent bug sent me to my bed for five days, bed of course being a euphemism for bathroom. It was a tedious time made more tedious by the symptoms giving me blurred vision, which wiped out reading. This meant that I indulged, in my conscious moments, in watching the terror that is daytime TV. There were of course a few highs, along with many very deep lows, and there were some interesting points along the way. I loved seeing some classic BBC comedies, especially after the horror of Pompidou, Matt Lucas’ new series which I watched for a very sparse four minutes before turning him off in disgust. And at 6.30pm on a Sunday, I ask you? Funnily enough it put Some

The thinly veiled racism and homophobia – sorry, the irony simply does not stand the test of time – left me cold. I turned off On The Buses before my brain was liquified by the appalling stuff that once passed as family entertainment. In the mornings one of my favourite TV chefs, James Martin, had a show about hospital food. It is clearly a worthy and well intentioned campaign and from what I can see he is doing a great job, turning round kitchens, taking them into profit, listening to patients and helping to save jobs. Well done James, in light of the constant erosion of the NHS thank heavens that there are people like you who are willing to invest their time and talent into making things better. I just have one question, and I know I have asked it before but bear with me on this. Why is it that we assume that an organisation, created to cure the sick – and one that is currently in financial meltdown – should also feed us? Does it not make sense that when you are undergoing hospital treatment that requires a stay, you remain

If anyone would like to pass this on to The Hon Jeremy Hunt MP, then please do responsible for the food that you eat? It’s a hospital, not a hotel!!! (I seldom resort to three exclamation marks – but on this occasion, grrrrr). One hospital chef said that he was working with a budget of £2.72 a day, per person, for their full day’s food needs. £2.72!!! (Sorry.) We have MPs saying that they cannot survive on their annual stipend, then claiming astronomical expenses for restaurant breakfasts whilst at the same time some dedicated chef is trying to break even on £2.72 for three meals and teas and coffees. I spent some time in hospital last year and the food was pretty grim, but came as part of my care package as I was out of the country. Had someone come around with a cash box and asked me for £2.72 a day for my meals, I
would have opened my wallet and given them at least a fiver and been more than happy. Oh I know some people cannot afford that, although how they live on less at home I fail to see. But for those of us who can, then the NHS needs to get real and start billing for the food. £5 a day, not a lot, and almost twice as much as that guy on the telly who was busting his gut to provide a good service and not go into deficit. It’s all about that sense of entitlement; I am sick therefore you must cure me and feed me. Well we’re not entitled, so shut up and cough up. If anyone would like to pass this on to The Hon Jeremy Hunt MP, then please do.

DANCING SHOES
A programme of new work and classic pieces at the Theatre Royal Brighton, as Rambert comes to town ambert returns to Brighton from Wednesday 25 to Saturday 28 March with an exciting programme of new work, and classic pieces from the UK’s leading contemporary dance company. The programme includes the return of Christopher Bruce’s Rooster, an ambitious new work from Alexander Whitley, and Mark Baldwin’s The Strange Charm of Mother Nature, inspired by the science of the cosmos. Rooster is a celebration of the swinging sixties set to music by the Rolling Stones. A series of courtship dances are accompanied by some of the Stones' most famous tunes, including ‘Not Fade Away’, ‘Paint It Black’, ‘As Tears Go By’, ‘Sympathy for the Devil’ and ‘Little Red Rooster’. This hugely popular work was created by former Rambert artistic director Christopher Bruce in 1991, and has become recognised as a modern classic. Talking about his inspiration for the piece, choreographer Christopher Bruce commented; “I was listening to some Rolling Stones tracks and started wondering if I could use them to

make a dance piece. When I finally came to choreograph Rooster, I had to be very careful, because the music was so well known that I had to make sure that the dance was strong enough and the overall structure sound. There had to be a link between the eight tracks and themes that carried through. The whole had to add up to more than the individual parts.” “Rooster is a celebratory work in that it celebrates the sixties,” said Bruce. “Some tracks, such as ‘Ruby Tuesday’ or ‘As Tears Go By’ are more reflective, but even in these sections I have tried to find humour and a sense of fun. One of the main themes I explore is the male chauvinism that comes through in the lyrics of some of the tracks, and it is also interesting to see these behavioural patterns beginning in the playground where children can be so cruel to each other.” Talking about the piece’s broad appeal and longevity, Bruce says; “The positive thing about Rooster is that it doesn’t seem to date. Like the Rolling Stones’ music, it seems to engage generations ranging from youngsters to 80year-olds, which is wonderful. I think the themes in the piece are universal, although I treat them quite lightly. The piece is an ironic look at the sixties and the attitudes of the times. The chauvinism may have declined a little in the West, but, the world over, attitudes haven’t always changed that much, I have to say!” Rambert at the Theatre Royal Brighton, 25–28 March 2015 www.atgtickets.com/brighton* 0844 871 7650* (*booking fees apply)

TO DEGREE OR NOT TO DEGREE ...
GETTING READY TO LAUNCH
ilm degrees are funny things. Often seen by outsiders as a ‘soft’ subject, they actually cover a spectrum; from the admittedly wishy-washy and vague film watchers’ gathering to the technical and hands-on film production studies or my own degree course, Film and Screen Studies at the University of Brighton (go Brighton!), where we read film as cultural exemplification and studied the histories, technologies and theories of screen practices. A degree in film is not, however, vital to the creation of quality works. When Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen – three ‘big name’ media moguls – founded DreamWorks Studios, not one of them had a degree. Spielberg first enrolled at California State University Long Beach to study film in 1965, at the age of nineteen, but dropped out three years later, not far from achieving his degree. The following year his 22minute short film Amblin was shown at the Atlanta Film Festival, leading to a contract with a Hollywood studio. He went on to define the blockbuster, win three Oscars, countless Emmy, Golden Globe and lifetime achievement awards, plus five honorary doctorates. All without an undergraduate degree. Until, that is, May 2002, when he finally graduated from Long Beach with a bachelor’s degree in film and electronic arts, having secretly reenrolled the previous year. He fulfilled his remaining graduation requirements via independent projects and a final term paper. The school waved the requirement that all final year students must submit a completed 12minute short film … accepting Oscar-winning Schindler’s List in its place. "I think that counts as an advanced, polished film," Sharyn Blumenthal, director of the Film and Electronic Arts Department, joked at the time. Spielberg went back to complete his degree 35 years after he first entered the university, as not only a ‘thank you’ to his parents but as a personal note for his own family, “and young people everywhere, about the importance of achieving their college education goals”. This week, FilmFest On TV will be showing a special episode celebrating those who have endeavoured to achieve those goals. This Sunday, tune in to Latest TV at 9pm to watch some truly great short films made by students from across the country. They are not all studying film but they do all have a passion for it, and a drive that has led them to create their own mini masterpieces. And speaking of mini cinematic masterpieces, make sure to watch my interview with Brightonian filmmaking prodigy Liam Hooper as he gives us an exclusive look at his upcoming film, Strangers Within. It’s a suspense-filled horror heist that you won’t want to miss!
he cats hate us (they’ve had to forgo 24/7 attention from the human slaves); the Rioja’s nearly run dry (we’ll be brave – and switch to Chianti); and chez Arty is carpeted in page proofs. It can only mean one thing ... this year’s book is 24 hours away from going to press and the last minute panic is on. It’s been a labour of love, and we hope everyone will enjoy the sensational selection of artists who’ve taken part in Art In Brighton 2015. We couldn’t have done it without you! The book is launching on 4 April. Don’t miss: We’ll never turn down the opportunity to feature feline-inspired artwork. So when Phil Corbett asked us to give his new show a mention, how could we refuse. ‘From Under A Rock’ looks, at first glance, like a collection of would-be cartoon video game characters. (Phil comes from a background of kids’ TV and game design, after all.) But on closer inspection, these cute images are riddled with dark undertones. Bizarre living pastries and multiheaded birds and cats struggling with online dating are just some of the subjects tackled in this exciting collection of ink works – at Brighton Rocks, Kemptown, until mid-June. Out of town (just): It’s always a delight to buy direct from artists. And when you can do so in the beautiful surroundings of Stanmer House. Well, it’s a win-win situation. So you’d be mad to miss The Sussex Guild’s Contemporary Craft Show on 21 and 22 March. It promises a spectacular variety of work from the Guild’s designer makers – with jewellery, ceramics, glass, pewter, enamel, woodturning, furniture and textiles (including batik), patchwork, embroidery, knitwear and felting. Meet the makers, ask questions, find out how things are made and maybe even The Sussex Guild commission an individual piece? You can find out more at www.thesussexguild.co.uk. www.artymagazines.com

KING GONG
Komedia celebrates, and Jimmy Carr comes to town
ip, hip, hooray! Huge congratulations are due to Komedia this week, as the comedy industry’s flagship awards from Chortle.co.uk regarding 2015 have been announced. Komedia has won the award for best large venue in the South for its Brighton home, as well as Best Large Venue in Wales & the West with its base in Bath. Completing this hat trick of good news is the announcement that Zoe Lyons’ monthly gay-friendly club Bent Double, that plays in the Brighton venue on the first Sunday of every month, has been awarded the gong for Best Club Night in The South. We always knew Brighton had the best of everything in the South East, and it seems the voting public agree. Komedia generally has a stronghold on big weekend comedy nights, with its Krater Comedy attracting birthdays and celebrations from across the South of the country, and playing Friday night, two shows on Saturday, as well as Sunday evening. This weekend’s proceedings are hosted by Jim Smallman, with the line-up peppered with great sets from the likes of Sean Collins, Tom Allen, Joe Lycett. Prices and times range, but

it is worth noting that Saturday’s late show is the most raucous, and Sunday’s performance is more mellow and a lovely round off to the weekend. So really, you can pick any show to suit your mood, and be sure of top talent treading the basement boards. Stepping away from Gardener Street now, next Tuesday sees everyone’s favourite round-faced quiz show host – Jimmy Carr – in town, back at the day job of touting puns and clever worldplay, skipping ever so close to the bone, and generally showing off sharply. Having seen him in the telly, you’re always aware of a certain disarming smoothness about Le Carr, but seeing him in person actually takes your breath away at the precision and professionalism that he brings to every gig. There is an urban comedy rumour that when he started out Jimmy Carr determined to gig every day, as if it was already a job – something never before seen and probably costing him both financially and in huge amounts of energy, as he was also holding down a full time conventional job in all that time. That workmanlike professionalism and pride in his work is still in evidence as he never stops working, and the freshness of his material reflects that beautifully. If you feel you’ve left it too late to catch Jimmy next Tuesday, you’ll be pleased to hear that he’s added an extra date and will be back with the same show at the end of August. But really, why wait? O’HOOLEY & TIDOW The folk duo chat musical inspiration he Yorkshire duo of Belinda O’Hooley and Heidi Tidow have released three albums, and were nominated for Best Duo at the 2013 BBC 2 Folk Awards. Brought up on traditional Irish music, last year’s The Hum album saw the pair branch out further from their folk roots, mixing traditional with contemporary sounds and subject matters, helped by the production wizardry of Gerry Driver. Songs about industry, beer, migrant workers and war, along with a tribute to Pussy Riot, won them rave reviews across the board. Their highly complimentary voices and a large reservoir of great songs have marked the duo as one of the best on the circuit. “I met Heidi while I was still in The Unthanks,” says Belinda. “I happened to go to a gig where she was singing and thought she was fantabulous. We’re getting married next year. We’ve been together ten years next year. We’ll have a bit of a do … any excuse for a do,” laughs Belinda, in those dry Yorkshire tones.

Hum, and a live favourite, ‘Summat’s Brewin’ is a joyful celebration of the resurgence of micro-brewing in the Colne Valley area where they live. “We noticed that the last time we were in Lewes, people were getting more interested in beer and it’s wonderful.” As for the name The Hum: “We've got an old mill that has been converted into a factory just below our house. It’s still producing textiles. That humming you can hear, we’ve got so used it, it’s very comforting. And when you don’t hear it’s a bit weird,” she laughs. Belinda’s dad emigrated to England from Ireland, and was a navvy, helping to build England’s burgeoning road network. With Belinda’s mum being German, it’s not surprising to find out that migration and immigration are themes throughout their oeuvre. “For the next album we’re going to be looking more at immigration,” says Belinda, “in terms of the way immigrants are either accepted or not accepted. My dad was one of those people that saw a lot of prejudice when he first came over – “No Irish here”, and all that kind of stuff – and I can see from his point of view how hard it must have been, to just get on and work…” Con Club, Lewes, Sat 21 March, 7.30pm, £10 advance

MAD, OR TROUBLED?
PREVIEWS 25 Years Of Reeves & Mortimer: The Poignant Years UK Tour 2015
A Mad World My Masters Theatre Royal Brighton, 11 March 2015 ★★★★★ Andrew Kay everywhere may reserve the right to correct you. Duke Of York’s Picturehouse, 28 February 2015 ★★★★★ Louise Bevan
Vic and Bob have announced their first tour since 1995! The tour, '25 Years of Reeves and Mortimer: The Poignant Years’ will be a celebration of the first 25 years of their professional collaboration from Vic Reeves Big Night Out (Channel 4 1990) through to Shooting Stars (BBC Two 19992011). The Script Entering the stage through the crowds, surrounded by a tunnel of green, the excitement built for this very popular Irish trio. Having never seen The Script live, their vocals were fantastic, as was their ability to truly connect with the audience. At one point Danny O'Donoghue appeared on the balcony to the fans' delight and surprise. Playing all of the songs that we know and love with a few stories in between, we were taken on a journey from 'Falling to Pieces' to 'Super Hero' and some superb laser shows which made It is fairly easy to see where the motivation behind this production comes from, and why not. Taking a proven format should surely give you a fair crack at creating a hit. In many ways this reworking of Tomas Middleton's 1604 comedy has all the right elements. There are plenty of laughs, an excellent set and costumes and above all a stunning cast who give their all. So why did I leave feeling less than satisfied? I suspect that after the first 30 minutes of lewd double entendre and out and out filth I tired of it. The 1956 setting, inclusion of period songs and occasional slip into modern day language coupled with a complex plot populated by a huge number of characters, who were mainly given names referring to genitalia was, I am sad to say, an overload. Full marks though to Dennis Herdman as Penitent Brothel, a masterfully physical performance that really did make me laugh out loud.

watching this film unfold. A sardonic musing on love, loss and the hedonistic pansexual exploits that happen in between (in this story they do), Appropriate Behaviour follows Shirin (played by Akhavan) as she negotiates first-date wine spillages, an asymmetric threesome, screaming children, underwear decimation and the expectations of her uptight Persian family with an almost pathological cynicism, rescued in the last moments by a quiet prevailing of friendship over the accumulated pains of the heart. Funny, and affirming. Addendum: Viewers are emplored neither to make sweeping comparisons to Lena Dunham's 'Girls' nor to use the word 'quirky', or any other reductive synopsis, lightly.
