traight to the fun stuff – we’ve an extra, bonus competition this week! We’ve five DVD copies to give away, courtesy of Second Sight, of the highlyacclaimed BBC drama series The Cazalets starring British acting talents Hugh Bonneville (Downtown Abbey, Paddington) and Anna Chancellor (Downtown Abbey, Four Weddings and a Funeral). Based on the best-selling novels by Elizabeth Jane Howard, The Cazalets follows the lives of a large, privileged family transformed by the outbreak of World War II. As storm clouds gather over Europe, the family’s three generations retreat to their country estate where the trials and tribulations of life play out against the backdrop of war. Births, deaths, marriages, secrets and intrigue test their stoic British restraint and resilience to the limit, as both the country and family are fractured by
the horrors of the escalating conflict. Well, if that hasn’t gripped you already I don’t know what will – to win yourself a copy of the DVD, just answer this question: What was the name of Anna Chancellor’s character in 1994’s Four Weddings and a Funeral? Follow the competition entry instructions at the bottom of page 21, and as always, happy competition-ing! And that’s just the cherry on top of a delicious, rhetorical cake ... we’ve plenty more to tickle your tastebuds across the pages, inclusing our monthly Wave World feature, starting on page 12. Treat yourself. Louise Bevan, Editor Email your comments to editorial@thelatest.co.uk or visit us online at thelatest.co.uk

Michael Harwood’s debut novel; Brighton Pride 2015; celeb spotting in the city ast week we were delighted to be invited to the Red Room (of zero pain) at Brighton’s Royal Pavilion for the official launch of The Manservant, the debut novel from Brighton author Michael Harwood. One of the UK’s most sought after private chefs, Michael has cooked for a whole host of rich and famous clients including HM Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip – most of whom he can’t discuss, due to the non-disclosure agreements he has signed, dammit. There were flashbulbs aplenty in the suitably regal surrounding of the Red Room at the exclusive signing event, which was followed by a private drinks party. Well worth a read, The Manservant is a modern day comedy of manners that draws on the author’s real-life experiences as a personal chef to Britain’s rich and famous. A thrilling contemporary take on Downton Abbey, the novel is a scandalous and racy romp through the perennially popular subject of the upstairs / downstairs divide. Get yourself a copy – perfect reading for the summer season. Well done Michael.

righton Pride is one of our favourite events of the year. An amazing showcase of the diversity, exuberance and sheer bloody brilliance of our city, Pride never fails to make us all that little bit prouder of ourselves. 2014 was a ground-breaking event, with a superb community parade, blistering festival event at Preston Park and a hugely successful ticketed Pride Village Party. The 2015 Brighton Pride celebrations look set to build on this success with the news that our very own superstar DJ, Fatboy Slim, will again be rocking the Wild Fruit Big Top. Added to this, organisers have announced that Grammy award-winning, double Brit nominee Jess Glynne will be performing live on the Brighton Pride Festival main stage. The singer – who has just hit number one on the iTunes Top Songs chart with her single 'Hold My Hand’ – is adored by Adele, rated by Zane Lowe and loved by Lily Allen. My advice is to get your tickets early because I predict a sell-out. Head to www.brighton-pride.org for tickets and further info. See you in the Park on August 1.

LATEST PEOPLE Trees For Cities’ Edible Playground Brighton Paper Round have sponsored the launch of a Trees for Cities’ Edible Playground at Moulsecoomb Primary School in Brighton. To celebrate this exciting new project, a group of children from the Mouslecoomb Primary School helped to plant a tree in the school grounds on 18 March. The event was attended by Leader of Brighton & Hove City Council, Jason Kitcat. Trees for Cities’ Edible Playgrounds programme tackles obesity, food poverty and lack of access to nature by transforming the grounds of inner city schools; the kids themselves are given the chance to get their hands dirty and learn as they have fun. Brighton Paper Round is keen to extend the partnership with Trees for Cities locally, which began in 2012 with the planting of 5,000 trees in Stanmer Park. Darren Hedges, general manager at Brighton Paper Round, said; “We are
absolutely delighted for the opportunity to support such a fantastic project. Getting an understanding about sustainability, including food production, embedded in children’s mindset from such an early age is really important. We know from our school food recycling project that school children are very keen to do their bit to tackle food, waste and sustainability.” Sharon Johnson, Chief Executive of Trees for Cities said: “Edible Playgrounds are a fun, practical way to teach children about the food they eat and give them access to fresh, nutritious food. The pupils, staff and parents at Moulsecoomb Primary school have a real passion to utilise their outdoor space and we are delighted that Paper Round and Infinity Foods are supporting this project.” Moulsecoomb Primary School has a strong ethos on outdoor learning, access to nature,

Moulsecoomb Primary School’s Edible Playground and embedding growing and cooking into the curriculum. They have lots of outdoor space and already have raised beds, chickens, a forest garden, an orchard, and the nuttery that Trees for Cities planted through a project called Local Food a few years ago. The school have also recently been supported by the People’s Health Trust in their growing and cooking activities with local people. The school’s Edible Playground is transforming the outdoor space in the school grounds into green growing spaces, giving children the opportunity to grow, harvest and eat healthy food. The project will give the children the opportunity to grow and cook food not just during school, but also during school holidays and at weekends with their families. www.treesforcities.org www.edibleplaygrounds.org www.paper-round.co.uk/brighton

It’s time again to lose an hour so we can recalibrate our clocks and our brains to summertime. At a stroke, we’ll conjure up lighter evenings, hastening our arrival into spring. On Saturday 28 March at 8.30pm, WWF’s Earth Hour will call on us to switch off our lights and turn the spotlight onto climate change. The event is reportedly the world’s largest grassroots movement for the environment, inspiring and uniting millions around the world to use their power for change. In the darkness of Earth Hour we can reflect on the environmental burden of our lifestyles while marveling, in its absence, at the wonders of electric light. 2015 is the UN International Year of Light. UNESCO is celebrating the importance of light to life and to culture and highlighting how optical technologies can be harnessed to promote sustainable development and offer solutions to worldwide challenges of energy, communications and healthcare. In Brighton & Hove our 19,000 street lamps help make our streets safe every night of the year. It’s easy to forget that a quarter of the world, 1.5 billion people, live with no artificial light at all. While powering our street lights needs four thousand tonnes of CO2 per year, swathes of Africa and south Asia share dark nights for people. So, in this Year of Light, and at this weekend’s Earth Hour, we can at least acknowledge this imbalance and look at what we can do to remedy it. Here we’re installing thousands of low energy street lamps to slash their carbon cost. Meanwhile some of the poorest and most isolated communities are using solar power for lighting, mobile phone charging and healthcare provision without the carbon downside. For a planet so bathed in light we’ve still barely started to tap its potential. Enjoy the lighter evenings!

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ELECTION The starting gun on the 2015 general election race has now been fired. With the dissolution of Parliament yesterday, candidates will now being going gung-ho to try and win your votes. Brighton and Hove is one of the most interesting places in the country – with five parties set to poll well. But it's the local election which will be most interesting, with Greens, Conservatives and Labour all believing they can take control of the city council. Watch this space. SEAFRONT BOOST After years of neglect, Brighton and Hove's seafront is on the up. Last week it was announced the city council had been granted more than £9 million. This means the urgent reconstruction of the former West Street Shelter Hall will be able to be carried out. The Victorian structure, which supports the A259 and West Street, is in very poor condition – so the money will be a welcome boost to the city's shop window. But with every gain there's a bit of pain so expect some disruption with roadworks in the coming months. "BORIS BIKES" FOR BRIGHTON? Could "Boris Bikes" be coming to

Brighton? Well, it seems like the idea is gathering real momentum. Last week more than £1 million of government money was made available towards the scheme. The hope is it would see 430 bikes available from 50 docking stations, serving the city from the marina to Portslade, and along the Lewes Road to the universities. With the service becoming operational in 2017, the hope is it would get thousands of cars off the road. But the big question is: just how financially viable will it be in Brighton? And what will they be called?
THIEVES FOILED When two crooks went into Hove jewellers they thought they would be getting away with hundreds of pounds’ worth of goods. But they didn’t count on the reflex reactions of the shop owner and two members of the public. After seeing two people snatch items worth £500 from his shop, Simon Cooper of Cooper's in George Street gave chase. After being joined in his pursuit by two
SPORTING SAVIOUR When a car accident forced former Worthing FC footballer George Dowell to retire from the game, returning to the club was way down his list of priorities. But now the 22-year-old has become the seaside side's saviour – with a five-figure investment saving the club from going under. The money will go into creating a new 3G pitch at Woodside Road, as well as creating a budget for wages for the 2015–16 season.
ROCKING OUT If you hear punk, then most of you will have visions of Johnny Rotten and The Ramones. But in Brighton, there’s a new breed of rockers. And as was apparent when we took our cameras down to the recording studio, this certainly does not stop them from paying some mean tunes. DO IT LIKE A LADY
A RIESLING TO BE HAPPY
Guy Lloyd on his accomplished feminine side Wine expertise from Stephen Quinn
’m going on a ‘boys’ weekend’ this, erm, weekend. The words would normally fill me with dread, but it’s our band and we’re more brothers than ‘boys’ in the stag sense. Dysfunctional brothers, but siblings all the same. We all love music and that is our main focus for this weekend. That, and a lot of drinking. In any other situation I would probably do all I can do to avoid ‘hanging out with the boys’. I’m not really a boys’ boy. I go to the pub and watch football, etc, but I’ll be honest, if I see a group of ‘lads’ being all ‘laddy’ walking down the street, I’ll more than likely cross to the other side. Nothing against lads, boys, men, the male species ... I just prefer the company of women. Not in a Hugh Hefner kind of way. Let me explain. If we want to go right back, I probably define my relationship with men and women by my relationship with my mother and father (here comes my therapy session). My parents split up when I was fifteen, and I stayed with my Mum. Dad moved two hundred miles away and so naturally I formed a closer bond to Mother Lloyd. Up until that point, I’d been very shy around girls and stuck with my gang of boys. After my Dad left, I became much more trusting of girls than I did of boys and my relationships started to change. I had my first girlfriend soon after that and when I left school, without any sense of career direction, I decided to train as a hairdresser. I was the only male on the course. Very similar to Welsh David, in the village. I was a rubbish hairdresser but I learnt so much about women. How they behave, how they think, how they interact with each other, how they interact with me. And I loved it. I loved being around them. And I love it to this day. I would say out of all my close friends today, 70% of them are female. It’s not that I don’t like hanging out with my male friends. I love to. But in terms of who I relate to more, it would have to be a woman. I have a very strong feminine side (you may have seen some photos) and I’m often mistaken for being gay. My wife, on first meeting me, was convinced I was gay. This may have been the make-up and the Spice Girls t-shirt, but many people have been equally fooled without the get-up. So yes, I’m not a man’s man. I love watching football and I’m very proud of my reverse parking but if push came to shove, I’d rather paint my nails with the girls.

hance sometimes introduces us to wines in ways that make life seem extraordinary. While in Berlin recently I dined with a group of friends at an ordinary Turkish café. Late in the evening I discovered a wine rack at the back of the room. The café owner, Mehmet, only spoke German and Turkish. But we negotiated a rate of 20 euros a bottle. Apparently, the wines had been there when he bought the lease about 15 years ago. Most of the wines had no labels, or the labels were so damaged they were difficult to read. The only hint was the bottle; the long, thin shape meant they had to be rieslings. These wines must have endured years of temperature fluctuations from below zero in Berlin’s winter to more than 40C in summer. These kinds of fluctuations are bad news for wine, and the damaged labels proved the wines had been stored badly. This leads us to reflect on the wonder of German riesling. These whites are often consumed young, when they offer fruity and aromatic wines with flavours of green apple, grapefruit, gooseberry, rose blossom or cut green grass. They taste crisp because of the high acidity. Yet this acidity, if combined with quality fruit, produces rieslings with exceptional potential for ageing. Quality dry riesling can be enjoyed half a century after bottling. High sugar content provides an extra preservative, making sweeter wines especially suited for cellaring. Riesling is seldom oaked and is highly expressive of its terroir, meaning that the character is influenced by the wine’s place of origin. The grape variety orginated somewhere in the valley of the Rhine, since both its genetic parents, Heunisch and Traminer, have a long documented history in Germany. A third of all Germany’s riesling grows in the Mosel Valley but the Pfalz, Nahe, Rheinhessen and Rheingau regions also produce wines of substantial quality. We opened four wines at the table and three were acutely memorable. Mehmet tipped the fourth down the sink. In order of discovery, from the crowded racks we drank a 1992 Schlossbockelheimer Felsenberg spatlese from Schloss Plettenberg in the Nahe region, a 1997 Durkheimer Feuerberg Kerner auslase from Pfalz, and finally a 1996 Kreuznacher Hofgarten Huxelrebe auslase from the Reichsgraf von Plettenberg vineyard in Nahe. All had low alcohol, of about 9 or 10 per cent, and had been stored poorly. The labels were barely readable. Yet the corks were in good condition and the aromas sublime – a range of fruit flavours like ripe apricots, mango and pineapple combined to give a sensation of sunshine and joy in the mouth. The kerosene notes were mere hints in the background, like sweet memories. More pronounced were the aromas of honey and syrup, like the smell of toast lathered with honey at breakfast. All wines glistened a golden colour in the glass, and offered extraordinary mouthfeel, like kissing angels. The people at my table smiled in silence, reflecting on the joys of being alive.

Ready for a girly night on the town? The Martlets Midnight Walk is a night out with a difference
t’s back – the biggest girls’ night out of the year! The Martlets Midnight Walk is happening on Saturday 13 June 2015. Now in its ninth year, the Midnight Walk has raised over a million pounds to enable Martlets nurses to care for local people living with terminal illness. As the Hospice has to raise £9,000 a day to run its services, the money generated by sponsorship on the Midnight Walk is vital, and every single walker makes a difference. Although many women do the walk because they have a personal connection to the Hospice, others get involved to enjoy a night out with friends, or for a personal challenge. Women of all ages can take part – participants have been as young as 13 – whilst the oldest was a 99 year old lady who was taking part in her first ever fundraising event. The Midnight Walk always has a great atmosphere as hundreds of women take to the streets of Brighton complete with flashing bunny ears, cowboy hats and face paint, and this year The Martlets are celebrating their 18th birthday, so there will be a real party feel to the night. Dressing up for The Midnight Walk is entirely optional, but for many, planning their outfit is all part of the fun … This year there are three different routes of varying difficulty, so truly anyone can take part. Choose from a six, 13, or for ladies looking for a challenge, the new 20 mile walk. The six and 13 mile routes will start at midnight from Brighton Racecourse and

snake through Brighton and Hove. The 20 mile walk will start at 10pm to allow for the extra distance. Whichever route you choose, marshals are on hand to ensure no one gets lost and you will be welcomed back with a well-deserved tasty breakfast and hot drink. Antonia Shepherd, who organises the event, said; “It’s absolutely not about how quickly you can finish the walk, this isn’t a race. For most Midnight Walkers it’s all about dressing up and spending a night walking through Brighton with friends. It’s a girls’ night out really, supporting a local charity. A lot of the women who take part in the walk are doing it in memory of someone who has died. Others may not have used the Hospice’s services themselves but the walk can be an important way of supporting friends who have lost someone.” So, sign up for The Martlets Hospice’s

Midnight Walk and join hundreds of women, from all walks of life, who come together to have fun whilst raising money for this vital local charity. All walkers will be asked to raise a minimum of £25 in sponsorship and anyone who achieves over £125 will automatically be entered into a prize draw to win a gorgeous Pandora bracelet, or one of the great runnerup prizes. To enter, visit www.martletsmidnightwalk.co.uk, pick up an entry form at any Martlets shop, or call the Fundraising Department on 01273 747455. The Martlets Hospice in Hove provides end of life care services to adults with terminal illness, including cancer. Hospice facilities include an 18 bed in-patient unit, a ‘Hospice At Home’ service, and community services for patients living at home. The Patient and Family Support Team offer practical and emotional support to the families and carers of patients including helping them through bereavement. The Martlets believes everyone is entitled to a good and dignified death. Its main aim is to maximise patients’ quality of life and to support patient choice, dignity and independence. A registered charity, all services are provided free of charge. The Martlets receives less than a third of its funding from the government and so must raise over £9,000 a day to care for patients and their families. have just entered us for the Bill Bryson Prize for Science Communication. The theme this year is communicating science and ‘chance’. It’s rather lucky that we are already writing a Dr Who play that explores the scientific concepts of time travel and rescues Leonardo da Vinca from the alien twins! It’s also sheer ‘chance’ that I came across an affordable 3D printer called the xyz Da Vinci (a super 3D printer, by the way) that is now central to our plot. I’ve just finished reading Bill Bryson’s Notes From A Small Island, which really made me laugh out loud in places and in others struck a chord. I particularly liked this paragraph: “...in this wondrous land where the relics of genius and enterprise confront you at every step, where every realm of human possibility has been probed and challenged and generally extended, where many of the greatest accomplishments of industry, commerce and the arts find their seat...” Bill is actually talking about Britain here, and it’s so true. We have a lot to be proud about. But there is another line in the book as follows: “I have often been struck in Britain by how mysteriously well educated people from unprivileged backgrounds so often are. Where the grand final of Mastermind is frequently won by cab drivers. I have never been able to decide whether this is deeply impressive or just appalling. All I know is that it exists more here than anywhere else.” I’ll help Bill out on that one; “it’s appalling”. So often great talent is wasted and things seem to be getting progressively worse. We have a society whereby it is not ‘what you know’ but ‘who you know’ that counts and opens doors for you. We have to provide better opportunities for disadvantaged pupils once they leave compulsory education; recognise and reward these talented individuals rather than watch them fall off a cliff. We need employers to address the recruitment imbalance and understand that some university students have to work to pay extortionate rents whilst they study, and can’t afford to pay for a model first class university essay to be written for them.
ou may not realise it, but there are all sorts of interesting and unusual places to visit on the Brighton & Hove bus network – stretching out to Eastbourne, the South Downs, and Steyning to name but a few. This week: The South Downs Way. The South Downs Way is a national trail that winds its way across the South Downs National Park, fantastic for a ramble through pretty villages and beautiful countryside with fine pubs along the way. You can explore ancient trackways, Roman villas, and spot wildlife as you work your way along the trail. The South Downs Way is one of the best ways to see as much of the South Downs National Park, and what’s better is that it’s accessible at various points using Brighton & Hove bus services. Running 100 miles from Winchester, the first capital of England, all the way through to the white cliffs of Eastbourne, there are many hidden gems to be found along the route – Ditchling Beacon, Devil’s Dyke, Seven Sisters Country Park, not to mention the amazing views from the top of the South Downs. Getting there: As you’ll often be placed in the heart of the countryside when using our services, here’s a short guide showing just where and how to pick up the South Downs Way trail where you’d like to. Route 2 (Rottingdean – Brighton – Steyning): Alight near Upper Beeding at the Steyning bypass/South Downs Way stop, to pick up the trail. Route 28/29 (Brighton – Lewes – Tunbridge Wells): Alight at the Housedean Farm Stop to pick up the South Downs path. Route 12/12A/13X (Brighton – Newhaven – Eastbourne): Alight at the Old/South Downs Way stop to pick up the trail. Route 12/12X: Alight at the Exceat Park Centre Stop – this also gives access to the Seven Sisters Country Park and Friston Forest. The Breeze up to the Downs Route 77 to Devil’s Dyke is another option to pick up the South Downs Way – this runs at weekends only. Breeze up to the Downs Route 79 to Ditchling Beacon is another popular place to pick up the trail – this runs at weekends only. BRIGHTON SCHOOL FOR ALEXANDER ...
THE BRIGHTON SCHOOL FOR ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE
Louise Michel talks to Suzie Sanderson uzie and her husband, Chris, are internationally renowned teachers of Alexander, and have taught 40,000 sessions. They offer practitioner training at their beautiful Georgian home in Kemp Town, and run one of the most successful private practices in the country. Suzie says “Anybody of any age can learn Alexander.” Why become a practitioner? Sarah Eddy, STOMP cast member affirms; “This course is brilliant.” Angela East, cellist, says; “For anyone who is considering training, I would say: ‘Do not hesitate’.” People who come in with physical complaints are often surprised by the lift in spirits. Julia Bishop, an international violinist says; “It seems that getting rid of aches and pains is only the beginning, it’s the psychological stuff which amazes me. A total liberation.” The Brighton School offers MSTAT qualification, running during school terms. Suzie tells me that most of their students are now in private practise, explaining how professionals from a variety of backgrounds have been inspired to retrain. “One of the advantages of being a practitioner is you only need a table, you can teach anywhere in the world, and have an income postretirement!” she beams. “It’s all about liberating people in mind, body and spirit.” The school offers solutions to a wide range of aches and pains and has private practices in Brighton, Reigate and Crawley. Your monthly health, beauty and wellbeing insert – spring clean your health! old tight, it’s on its way – sunny skies, t-shirt weather, dips in the sea that won’t give you frostbite ... we can’t wait. And what better time to have a bit of a spring clean of your general wellbeing? We’ve three tips for keeping tabs on your body and mind and making sure you’re in tip-top condition for the approaching sunny months: 1. Start meditating – set aside just five minutes a day to sit quietly and concentrate on your breathing. A moment of mindfulness will carry you through the rest of the day with renewed energy and perspective. 2. De-stress – make sure the inevitable stresses of the day are vented in a healthy way. Take a stroll in the sunshine on your lunch break, join an exercise class, or take a dog for a walk (yours, a friend’s ... there’ll be no shortage of enthusiastic takers!). 3. Nourish your brain – visit an art gallery, read a book you'd never normally read, or listen to the radio in a foreign language. Keep your neural networks firing and growing. There’s no need to overwhelm yourself with change; just a few adjustments to your day will reap benefits that will last. Put a spring in your step!

BECAUSE THEY’RE WORTH IT Pamper yourself, in the name of local wildlife
n animal charity is asking people to pamper themselves, because they believe our local animal lovers and wildlife are worth it! East Sussex Wildlife Rescue & Ambulance Service (WRAS) is running a Pamper Day at the Landsdowne Hotel on Eastbourne seafront between 10am and 6pm on Saturday 4 April. Tickets are just £18 per person, and for this you get a two hour time slot at the event, two pre booked treatments, a raffle ticket and welcome drinks. The remaining appointments will be available on a first come, first served basis on the day. Treatments available will include manicures, facials, Bowen therapy, metamorphic technique, physiotherapy consultations, acupuncture, massage, and more – Medium Jacqueline will even be available to perform psychic readings. WRAS deals with thousands of wildlife casualties every year and is about to start its busy spring and summer season, where the charity’s bills will rocket as a result of hundreds of baby birds and mammals being admitted for hand rearing. “We will get a wide variety of orphaned and injured young wildlife. From baby birds thrown out of nests by predators, to those being thrown out during stormy weather. There are also those who are found orphaned as a result of their parents being shot, poisoned, run over, or attacked by cats, dogs and other wild predators. Our amazing staff and volunteers will be working round the clock to take care of our wildlife, with orphan rearing teams starting as early as 6am and finishing as late as 11pm. When premature or very young wildlife is admitted they can sometimes need monitoring and feeding during the night too, meaning our staff get very little sleep,” explains WRAS founder Trevor Weeks MBE. “During this busy time we struggle to fundraise, as our time is taken up dealing with the casualties, so events this like really make a big difference to our charity and how we can help support our local wildlife. Please support us,” said Trevor. To book tickets, call 01825 873003

DEAR JACQUIE
Your queries about natural health answered by Jacquie Lane for the College of Naturopathic Medicine
Are there natural alternatives to sleeping tablets? There are many natural steps that you can take to promote sleep and to enhance sleep quality. Firstly, try to find and eliminate any barriers to sleep, such as stress. Walk every day in the fresh air, preferably when the sun is out to help get some vitamin D – lunchtime is a good time and taking a break helps reduce stress during the day. Confine strenuous activities to the daytime, and take no vigorous exercise in the evenings. Instead, do something more relaxing such as pilates. Acupuncture treatments help many people to relax extremely well. Establish winding down rituals at night, such as no computers or stimulating TV after 8pm. Take an Epsom salts bath half an hour before bed. Herbs can be especially useful when it comes to combating sleep disturbances, so drink a valerian or camomile tea after your bath, then sprinkle some
lavender oil on your pillow. If safe to do so, open a small window in your bedroom, turn off the heating and use a hot water bottle if chilly. Ban TVs and mobile and cordless phones from the bedroom, and to reduce ‘electronic smog’ further, remove phone or laptop chargers emitting a glow light. Wear breathable nightwear and have a comfortable mattress and pillows. Hang heavy curtains to block out the light, if needed, as we sleep better in the dark. Reduce your alcohol intake as this can disturb sleep, and consume no caffeine after 1pm. If you’re waking up because you’re hungry, make sure you have an easily digestible snack an hour before your usual sleep time. Try a small carbohydrate
HEALTH& BEAUTY snack, e.g. a small banana or two oak cakes with a little smooth nut butter. You need adequate protein levels in your general diet to create an amino acid called tryptophan, required in the process of making the sleep hormone melatonin. Good sources are fish, turkey, eggs, nuts, lentils, beans, nut butters, and fermented soya such as tempeh. Eat organically to cut down on pesticide residues or genetically modified ingredients. If you’re still too lively at sleep time, a naturopathically-trained nutritional therapist or herbalist can design a plan just for you. See your health professional for personal advice.

TRICKS OF THE TRADE Hone down your grooming routine with these savvy top ten top beauty hacks ... hen it comes to hair and beauty problems, the list is never ending. Whether it’s wonky eyeliner, frizzy flyaways or dark circles, we all have certain beauty snags we just can’t conquer. Laura Meredith, of online hair and beauty retailer Hairtrade.com, says; “Sometimes instead of buying new products or altering techniques, we just need a few beauty secrets to help us out. There are so many quirky ways to prevent those make up annoyances that we encounter everyday.” And here they are: 1) Use sellotape for perfect winged eyeliner. Place the tape underneath your outside lashes and angle it towards your temples. Draw the liquid eyeliner across the eyelid as normal and then follow it across the tapeline. 2) Wiggle the mascara brush! Instead of just applying mascara using a stroke motion as normal, wiggle the brush from left to right across your eyelashes. This way you’re pushing the lashes up and
W
taking advantage of the length. 3) Make lipstick last. A lipstick hack to make the colour last is to apply the lipstick and then gently put a tissue over the lips. Next lightly tap some translucent or pressed powder over the tissue, and this will set in place. 4) Highlight eyeshadow colours. Base your eye with white eyeliner or eyeshadow before applying the colour. This will make the colour pop and appear more obvious and vibrant. 5) Apply baby powder to eyelashes. Using a cotton bud, apply baby powder to your top and bottom set of eyelashes. Once this is done, recoat the eyes with mascara for fuller looking lashes. 6) Double up your ponytail. One way to make your pony look longer and thicker is by splitting the hair in half. Tie half of your hair up in a normal half up, half down style. Tie the remainder of the hair in a low ponytail, then tie the two parts of the pony together and it will appear a lot longer. 7) Avoid mascara smudges
using a spoon. Nearly everyone suffers from the dreaded mascara marks on our eyelids whilst applying, but placing a spoon with the curve above or below your lash line will help avoid the mascara residue. 8) Brighten up the inner corners of your eyes. Applying a little bit of white eyeliner to the corners of your eyes will brighten up your other make up. 9) Use red/orange lipstick to conceal bags. The bright shades neutralise the blue and purple tones that cause dark circles in the first place. Apply the lipstick using a brush around your eye area, then as normal reach for your concealer and apply over the top using a beauty blender. 10) Tame flyaways by using a toothbrush. Using a spare

toothbrush to tame those stray hairs works! The thin frame helps us to get to all the niggly bits that a comb can’t. Put these beauty hacks into pracice and you’ll breeze your way through spring into summer, with your make up woes behind you. www.hairtrade.com

POWDER BEAUTY BOUTIQUE Latest reviewer Victoria Scarfield visited Topshop’s pop-up nail bar for an unexpected pampering treat was delighted to receive an invitation to have my nails done last week, at a pop-up nail bar by Powder Beauty Boutique in Topshop! I had always wandered past their shop in the North Laine and pressed my nose up against the window, as you do, but never gone in – now I definitely will. Topshop have completely revamped their store, and the personal shopping department is lovely. I was greeted with a glass of bubbles and a very beautiful array of cupcakes and various girly nibbles, all necessary for any pampering session. This was a lovely and very welcoming addition whilst I sat down and waited for my appointment, had a natter with the other ladies and perused the colours available. Here, another good touch, as the varnishes supplied were Topshop’s own brand and I did in fact go back and purchase the red colour used in my manicure. The lady who did my nails was lovely and chatty, and made me feel very pampered indeed for an ‘express nail treatment’ – it felt luxurious and self indulgent, which was great. She was very enthusiastic about the colour choice, and the two Powder Beauty beauticians were great in getting the other ladies to step out of traditional colour choices. She also suggested cuticle care and said they would provide this at another sitting – I was kindly provided with a voucher, which I will be using. I am looking forward to visiting their salon, now, and will indeed be back for some indulgent nail pampering! www.powderbeauty.co.uk www.topshop.com

Brand new comedy from Ben Fairey
For boisterous brain cells and a healthy heart, here’s a product we’re loving this month ...
rom actor and musician Ben Fairey comes ‘Floe-Joe’s Faces’, a brand new comedy showing at Otherplace at The Basement: The Pit, in Brighton, for three nights as part of the Fringe festival. The show follows Iowa’s dopiest music producer, Floe-Joe, who invites you to indulge in his wacky world of sketch, funk and banter, armed with just his bedroom-made beats and a very literal multiple personality disorder. Told via a playlist of character comedy sketches by faces that share FloeJoe’s brain, this 'intimate' listening party of deep-soul music has all the madness and mayhem required for a good time. Just go with the floe! www.otherplacebrighton.co.uk
f course it’s a brilliant idea to eat plenty of fruit and veg, drink water like it’s going out of fashion and take it easy on the cigarettes and alcohol ... we are what we eat, after all. But sometimes even a healthy diet can omit vital nutrients needed to keep our bodies working to their optimum levels. Here at Latest Towers we’ve been sampling Biocare’s Phytomega3, a vegetarian and vegan food supplement which is a source of DHA and EPA – each of which contributes to the normal functioning of the heart and brain. GET SET After filming chef Semone Bonner for International Chef Exchange, I follow him to his new venture ... onner, as he prefers to be known, was until late head chef at the Ginger Pig. We all love Ginger restaurants and gastropubs I think, and a trip to Hove was always a gastronomic pleasure. Ben and Pamela McKellar have done an amazing job and are no doubt key players in the rise in recognition for Brighton’s restaurant scene. Bonner came with us to Guernsey where he cooked in chef Tony Leck’s Pavilion Restaurant, and he was a star. You can see that programme now on Latest TV. Since his return, though, Bonner has parted the Pig and with chef Dan Kennyas joined The Set. In truth The Set has been in existence for a while, organising pop-ups around the city. Much as I enjoy pop-ups, there is little point in covering them here as by the time the article ‘pops up’, the restaurant can have ‘popped off’. Now The Set has a permanent home at a Regency Square Hotel, a chic affair with a great cocktail bar, fun interiors and ping pong. I know, why, I certainly gave the wiff waff a miss. Fortunately for me I did not miss out on an extraordinary dinner. We started of course with a cocktail, a very good one indeed. But before long we were ushered into the tiny restaurant where our table was ready. By tiny I mean around 20 seats, some of which are at the pass where you can watch the team prepare your dinner. We sat at a round table, my favourite shape, and before very long the menus arrived, a selection of set meals priced between £27 and £35 for four courses. Impressively priced we thought – and we were not disappointed. Especially as the first thing to arrive was a plate of their take on

chicken nuggets with a spicy ketchup. Of course they bore little resemblance to the commercial product and were more like a crumbed and fried chicken rillete. My first course was based around leek and an amazing cheese croquette, with some leek ash too. Leek ash you ask? Yes, and very interesting it was too, a sort of smoky, savoury sherbet. Next out, a stunning seaweed broth with cubes of bacon and discs of tender octopus. I love octopus – when it is cooked well. When not it is inedible. In Brighton you can rely on it at Agua Dulce, and now at The Set. A wowee dish that had me grinning from ear to ear. I can seldom resist the promise of oxtail. I love it and mourned its disappearance in the BSE era. When it re-appeared I bought it regularly from Paul at Brampton’s in Kemp Town Village. It’s not difficult to cook, but it takes both time and patience. This was delicious, cooked to perfection, picked from the vertebrae and formed into a slice. I loved the accompanying dishes too and in

particular the scorched lettuce and pickled shallots. It was hearty stuff and very satisfying too. To finish I was seduced by a dish called Breakfast Milk – yes an odd name and in a way an odd idea, but one that they pull off so brilliantly that I have been fantasising about it ever since. I have recently re-discovered breakfast cereal, in particular a budget brand of faux Sugar Puffs – good and not as sweet as the originals – and the best bit about cereal has to be the strangely tasty milk left in the bowl. Bonner and Dan have refined this into a delicate custard served with milk ice-cream, pale sponge and toasted bits and bobs to add texture. I loved it, and had I not been full would have asked for seconds. We had the matched wines to go with our meal, one for each dish, and to finish they served us miso marshmallows. Eating is believing. It’s small and exciting, so book and book fast. The Set, within Artist Residence, 33 Regency Square, Brighton, 01273 324302 www.thesetrestaurant.com

might not sound much like it, but at heart I am, and probably always will be, a northerner. I grew up in South West Lancashire in fairly ordinary surroundings, basic working class family, council house, happy parents and a network of close relatives and family friends. It was cosy, it was nice. I took it very much for granted. At 18 I moved south to study, and I never moved back. Over the years my parents moved away too and trips back became less and less frequent. And I love living here in the south, I cannot say that I miss being up north. That said, when I was offered a trip to Manchester a few weeks ago I jumped at the chance. Which is how I ended up with the lovely Ms K (no relation) at Manchester’s

UP NORTH Much merriment with Manford in Manchester Palace Theatre for the gala opening of Mel Brooks’ The Producers. Having read the word gala I sensed that this was going to be something of a glittery occassion – and I was right. The theatre was packed with smartly dressed people and amongst them a hefty number of TV stars. As a Coronation Street fan of far too many years to admit to in print, I was thrilled. I sat just behind Kim Marsh, who is so beautiful and elegant. Anthony Cotton was buzzing around and I met Lisa Riley too, who was charming and funny despite me elbowing her in the bosom. I saw John Thompson too and Noddy Holder and a lot of pretty girls who I was told were in Hollyoaks – yes I had no idea. But the big thrill was the show itself, which is hilarious of course, but made even better by the most remarkable cast. I was sure that David Bedella would deliver a great performance and he did. He can seduce a 2,000 strong audience with just one flash of that wicked smile. Phill Jupitus is pretty good as the mad German playwrite and Tiffany Graves makes a stunningly
Manford nails it, every last word, every pratfall, every moment, every note, every emotion Amazonian Ulla. Louie Spence plays Carmen Ghia with such ease and such energy that you cannot fail to love his camp antics and extraordinary physicality. Of course the whole hangs so much on the central characters Max and Leo. Cory English makes Max Bialystock his own, a powerful performance of real star quality. Leo Bloom is a tough call, too much received knowledge of previous performers could ruin any attempt to shine in the part, and Jason Manford has a lot to live up to. Which is why I came away from the theatre with the biggest smile on my face. Manford nails it, every last word, every pratfall, every moment, every note, every emotion. He milks the role and delivers the performance of a lifetime, which given his youth
means we can expect greater and greater things from him. I saw him in Sweeney Todd some time back singing the role of the beadle, and he was very good indeed. But that singing voice is extraordinary now, a real talent and one that he uses to great effect, soft and gentle in the oddly romantic bromance moments and wickedly precise for the comedic numbers. He has the accent too, and one would hardly know that like me, he is a professional northerner. The Producers comes to the Theatre Royal Brighton from Monday 18 April to Saturday 25 and I cannot recommend it highly enough. The entire show and company is unmissable, Jason Manford is the icing on a comedy confection that will have you rolling in the aisles.

BRIGHTON’S ARTY
FILM Jessica Kellgren-Hayes
LET’S DRINK TO THAT argarita, With A Straw (2014), could be called both ‘absurdly inclusive’ and ‘anti-disability’. It is the tale of a young Indian woman with cerebral palsy who falls in love with a blind girl – yet the leads are able bodied actresses. The film is so charming and lighthearted, however, that at no point does it feel like worthy consciousness-raising or an exercise in political correctness. Laila, the heroine, develops in ways occasionally unconnected to her disability or her naturally overly-sheltered teenage years, but always in ways viewers can understand. Laila attends Delhi University and lives with her loving family, but yearns for freedom. Unlike most Bildungsroman based around a disabled person, the film is an exploration of sexuality rather than the triumph of ‘overcoming’ a disability, with harsh truths along the way. Laila has a close male friend who is in love with her, yet as he is also a wheelchair user Laila has no issues with breaking his heart when a non-disabled musician looks her way. As any disabled person will tell you, there really is a harsh pecking order of ability when it comes to dating – tragic but true. The musician later breaks Laila’s own heart and she leaves Delhi for a Creative Writing course in far-flung New York. It is here she meets blind student activist Khanum, who teaches her many things about herself and the world, including how to order an alcoholic drink; the margarita of the title! Once Khanum reveals that she is gay, the two women begin a serious and special romantic relationship. The script has a great sensitivity to disability. Neither girl’s disability is ignored, nor the problems they throw up, so as well as facing the same problems as any other young adult, there are issues that I – having been disabled since my midteens – could connect with. All who spent their ‘rebellious teenage years’ having to rely on the people we were supposed to be rebelling from can relate to Laila’s longing for independence and privacy. Director and writer Shonali Bose wrote the film based on a conversation with her cousin, Malini Chib, who was born with cerebral palsy and wrote about her experiences in her autobiography, One Little Finger. The cousins were drinking in a bar when Bose asked what Malini wanted for her upcoming birthday. “She banged her fist on the table and said very clearly, because her cerebral palsy sometimes makes it hard to understand her speech; ‘I want to have sex!’ It hit me that, over all these years, I’d never dealt with her sexuality.” It is rare for any film to deal candidly and compassionately with the sexuality of the disabled, and to have Margarita, With A Straw come from a female Indian director makes it even more of a gem.

here’s always so much to look forward to when you live in Brighton. And at chez Krog, one of our most anticipated annual markers is not a festival, fair or parade. It’s simply the first weekend of the year that we’re brave enough to layer up, submit to the ocean breeze and sit on the beach long enough to quaff our first alfresco bottle of vino (which is never very long at all). Because, let’s face it, you can lose yourself looking at the sea forever – or at least until the Rioja runs dry. One of our favourite ‘Chalkie’ artists whose connection with the sea provides her source of inspiration is Leila Godden. Her mesmerising paintings evolve through a process of improvisation, where artist and materials interact, leading and following as marks are made and layers unveiled. The vast panoramas of changing light, dramatic weather and powerful water – framed by rocks solid with history yet transient with time – contribute to a completeness where time and space, stillness and movement combine. Leila is the featured artist at Chalk Gallery, Lewes, 6 to 26 April. An elemental experience is assured. Out of town: ‘A Decade of Colour’ celebrates the masterful palette of David Armitage at the Birley Centre, Eastbourne; vivid and energetic canvases that will leave a lasting impression. Until 26 April (weekends only). Last chance: At Alfriston Arts Gallery, on the high street, a small but perfectly formed exhibition of Michael Cruickshank’s work makes it possible to own a tiny bit of a beautiful Sussex day – forever. The artist is a master at capturing that perfect moment in time, and his new collection glows with the radiant soft light Michael Cruickshank of summer. Until 7 April (closed Mondays). www.artymagazines.com

CHICHESTER HIGHLIGHTS Chichester Festival Theatre have another stunning season
ear on year, CFT deliver an amazing season of top theatre, comedy, serious new works, classics, and of course their amazing revivals of top musicals – and this year is set to be as exciting as ever with a rich mix of work and performers. The season opens with Way Upstream by Alan Ayckbourn which runs from 23 April to 16 May. Four old friends, one cruising boat, two weeks off work, and the perfect setting of the beautiful River Orb. What could possibly go wrong? This hilarious expose of the murky depths that lurk beneath the surfaces of friendship, love, desire and power is vintage Ayckbourn. Next, The Rehearsal by Jean Anouilh, translated by Jeremy Sams, from 8 May to 6 June. The Count, better known as ‘Tiger’, is planning another of his spectacular parties, including an evening of amateur dramatics. But as soon as rehearsals begin, it’s clear that his play will unleash as much passion, shock and intrigue off stage as it will on. George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin’s songs feature in A Damsel In Distress, based

on the novel and play by P. G. Wodehouse. This new stage musical brings together a worldweary American composer, a beautiful and irrepressible English socialite, a fierce aunt, and lots of other delightfully eccentric characters. From 30 May to 27 June. Willy Russell’s Educating Rita follows from 18 June to 25 July, and actor, broadcaster and comedian Lenny Henry makes his Chichester debut as Frank. His theatre credits include The Comedy Of Errors at the National Theatre and award-winning performances in West End productions of Fences and Othello. The big musical of the season has to be Mack And Mabel, from 13 July to 5 September. This musical comedy is a poignant love story and a riveting tribute to the silent movie era, based on the true romance between Hollywood legends Mack Sennett and Mabel Normand. The unmissable Michael Ball plays Mack. Written in 1932, W. Somerset Maugham’s For Services Rendered is next, and confronts the

Always worth catching are the Chichester Festival Youth Theatre’s productions, and this year a world premiere of Michael Morpurgo’s Running Wild runs from 2–16 August, a touching and thrilling story of the devastating Boxing Day tsunami, and a young boy’s remarkable jungle adventures afterwards. The promenade production will be staged in the evocative landscape of Cass Sculpture Foundation, against the spectacular backdrop of monumental sculptures and dramatic settings. Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me by Frank McGuinness is next, directed byMichael Attenborough, and runs from 10 September to 10 October. Based on the experiences of those taken hostage in Lebanon in the 1980s, this drama features an American doctor, an Irish journalist and an English academic – three men with little in common who somehow forge bonds that testify to the power of the human spirit. David Haig returns to Chichester following his appearance in Festival 2014’s highly acclaimed Pressure. And finally Young Chekov: The Birth Of A Genius; Platonov, Ivanov and The Seagull, in versions by David Hare and directed byJonathan Kent, from 28 September to 14 November. Three plays written when Anton Chekhov was young offer a new perspective on this undisputed master of modern drama. Anna Chancellor, last at Chichester in Private Lives and South Downs/The Browning Version, is confirmed to play Arkadina in The Seagull. James McArdle plays the title role in Platonov and Lvov in Ivanov. Samuel West, last seen at Chichester in Enron And Doctor Faustus, plays the title role in Ivanov and Trigorin in The Seagull. APRIL FOOLS
Highlighting the mix of comedy ahead this week
is the season to play silly blighters practical jokes on each other this Wednesday, cramming as much tomfoolery into the morning as possible, and declaring whomsoever plays any larks after midday to be the fools themselves. Yup, it’s April Fools’ Day. If you can’t be bothered to find your own supply of laughter for this annual time of tomfoolery, then let the professionals step up and take the strain, with some remarkably top notch comedians in town on the day itself, and the night before. First up, on April Fools’ Eve (yes, that can be a thing) is John Bishop, in town with his ‘Supersonic’ show, having returned due to popular demand.

This is an extra date added to the tour that has already proven very successful for the Liverpudlian. He is an everyman with a nice suit, and as such Bishop’s brand of down to earth and easily relateable humour has seen him rise in the last few years rapidly, from playing the Brighton Dome’s Studio Theatre to the Brighton Centre in record time. On April Fools’ itself the fab Gina Yashere is playing over at The Old Market in Hove, returning to Britain after an extended stay Stateside with her biggest solo show to date. Promising to cover her travels that have taken her all over the world, with tales and experiences ranging from her stint as a crap psychic on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, to being menaced by three uber-intelligent cats at her friend’s flat, as well as ridiculous auditions in Los Angeles, being coughed on in China, and finding herself in a brothel in Singapore. Yashere finishes this tour in a couple of weeks at the Brixton Academy, so reap the benefits of the home run gig here. Covering two dates, and taking up residence in the biggest room of the Brighton Dome complex is Dylan ‘Black Books’ Moran. In last week’s exclusive interview (check it out at www.thelatest.co.uk) he mentioned that he has “a slight problem with the idea of saying the same thing on Wednesday as I did on Tuesday”, meaning it could just be worth your while to get tickets to both nights! Moran is now a family man, but that doesn’t make him any less amusingly cantankerous on stage. You get the impression Moran was a grumpy old man before he started shaving, and has benefited every day from it. NADINE SHAH The singersongwriter talks with Jeff Hemmings ith the release of her debut album in 2013, Love Your Dum And Mad, Nadine Shah first made her mark as a singer and songwriter of note, writing compelling, intense and honest lyrics, set to music that reminded many of Nick Cave. But it was her rich, deep and operatic voice that really got noticed, as well as her unusual Pakistani-Norwegian, but brought up in South Tyneside, background. "My family didn't know I could sing, I thought I could. My mum heard a CD, but didn't know it was me! I wasn't particularly attentive at school so I was encouraged to go into music, something that I could be passionate about and focus on. I ended up going to performing arts clubs – we put on musicals in the summer holidays – and then I had formal classical training, a little bit of opera, and then got into jazz music," says Nadine in her Geordie tones. "Nina Simone was the one that really got me
W
into proper music, her vocal style really connected with me; deep, androgynous and interesting." The new album, Fast Food, like the debut, is also a collaboration with producer Ben Hillier. "I was going through a bunch of albums, listening to the songs and the production values, and his name kept cropping up. At the time I had no songs, just the one video clip of me on YouTube. Luckily he quite liked it, and we started working together. There is no romantic story to it … but we got on very, very well. I intend to work with

Ben until one of us croaks," says Nadine. "The first album took so long to make, deciding how it was going to sound, and by the time it came out it didn't feel like a proper representation of where I was at that time musically. So, I was very aware this time that I wanted to make a coherent body of work, and in quite a short space of time, so that the lyrical themes were coherent. I went through an intense period of writing for a month or so, and then we made the album in a similar timeframe as well." Recorded largely live, with just the male vocals recorded separately, the sound is more in a stripped back post punk vein this time around – where PIL meets Siouxie Sioux via The Cure and Joy Division – although it’s definitely not retro, more of a modern take on that sound. And thematically, it revolves around relationships ... "It's a collection of portraits of people I love or have loved, a succession of really intense shortlived affairs." Imaginary or otherwise? "Otherwise! I'm dreading my father reading these interviews …" The Haunt, Fri 10 April, 7pm, £11.50. Nadine will also be performing at Resident Records in Brighton on 6 April.

Rambert, Theatre Royal Brighton, 25 March, 2015 ★★★★★ Andrew Kay
Peter Hook & The Light 2015 Lowlife and Brotherhood Shows
I always leave a Rambert performance exhausted, but it is the same exhaustion that one feels on waking from an exciting dream. Rambert are always exhilarating and last night was no exception. Frames by Alexander Whitley contrasted the elegance of the human form with the rigours of steel, mechanical against human. Complex shapes and moves, witty references to bar work and a score by Daniel Bjarnason that soared into a Vivaldi-like crescendo, Wheatley is a talent to watch. The Strange Charm of Mother Nature is Mark Baldwin’s new work and here he uses classical forms to express ideas inspired by a visit to the Large Hadron Collider at Cern. Elegant yet explosive, using three contrasting pieces of music, this new exploration of science and nature from Baldwin shows him at his most eloquent. The company showed at their precise, well schooled best in this very beautiful new work. Of course that precision and basis in the rigours of pure dance technique is the cornerstone of Rambert’s ability to deliver world class dance. Finally to Rooster, Christopher Bruce’s classic work to music by the Rolling Stones. Here the company strut, jive and flirt their way through a courtship ritual that

has more to do with the Elizabethans and West Side Story than it does to pop. Entertaining, exciting and comedic – Rooster deserves the recognition that it has attained since first performed.
Lippy Have you ever lost someone through suicide? Did it leave you confused? Lippy explores the mystery of four women from Leixlip, County Kildare, who in 2001 decided to starve to death barricaded in their house. Why ‘Lippy’? Because a lip-reader was hired to decipher their last recorded conversation, on CCTV, thus we learn a lot about the power and pitfalls of lip reading. This purposely disjointed production effectively communicates the disorientating effect suicide has on the survivors. It is a highly innovative production featuring excellent use of technology. We are confronted by their destruction, and we question our own existence. Lippy, The Old Market, 20 March 2015 ★★★★★ Martin Baron
An Evening With Simon Weston Despite the 94 operations, the battles with depression, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder,
borderline alcholism and being thrusted into the spotlight due to his horrific burns (suffered during the Falkland conflict), there is an abiding trait that has clearly seen Simon through these dark times: humour. It’s a particular gallows humour, self depricating, extremely black and un-PC. in places. But it is an honest humour nonetheless. It’s a tribute to him that he sees the man who dropped the bomb (which in turn caused his injuries) as a friend. It’s a humbling experience being in his presence, and a credit to the nation he serves still. Connaught Studio, Worthing, 19 March 2015 ★★★★★ Lee Stevens

Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra, Raphael Wallfisch (cello) Barry Wordsworth (conductor) Brighton’s favourite maestro (and Britain’s premier ballet conductor) gave a delightful pulse and sparkle to Lord Berners’ enchanting ‘Fantasie Espagnole’, winning new fans for this absurdly neglected composer. We then enjoyed a masterly performance of Walton’s deeply emotional Cello Concerto. Holst’s ‘The Planets’ too was full of dance, with precise detailing in the emphatic beat of ‘Mars,’ in the sensuous line of ‘Venus’ and in the jollity of ‘Jupiter’. It was a splendid showcase for the whole augmented orchestra. The 2015 season concluded with mystic ‘Neptune’ and the eerie off-stage voices of the Brighton Festival Chorus. GOOD FRIDAY Eurovision’s Greatest Hits BBC1, 9pm The Eurovision Song Contest, now known simply as Eurovision, is marking it’s 60th anniversary this year – and doesn’t it look fun? As well as being the king of camp, this competition has seen history being made and pop hits being debuted, plus sensations ranging from Sandie Shaw’s bare feet to Conchita Wurst’s beard.
Bear Grylls: Mission Survive ITV1, 9pm We’re down to the nitty gritty, it’s the final of the series and all that are left are the final three celebrities, whittled down from the initial twelve. Bet Dame Kelly Holmes, Mike Tindall and Vogue Williams are feeling tired and very proud of themselves. But it ain’t over yet, with some incredible feats yet to overcome.
Relatively Clever Sky1, 8pm It’s Easter! Which means hot cross buns, loads of chocolate, too much cardboard in the recycling, and seeing lots of lovely family. Aren’t they a fab bunch? If, indeed, you do think they’re fab and not simply driving you up the wall, imagine doing this battle of the families quiz, hosted by Mel Giedroyc. Nice.
