t’s been a while since we heard from him, so fans of the Aussie crooner and reality TV landmark will be delighted to hear that Peter Andre will be popping up in new ITV show Give A Pet A Home, which will be screened this month. Pete will join celebrity animal lovers Chris Kamara, Coleen Nolan, Kimberly Wyatt, Denise Lewis OBE and fellow Sussex resident Julian Clary on the show, and will be tasked with finding new homes for mistreated and abandoned animals from the Newbrook Farm Animal Centre in Birmingham. Celebs will earn their stripes during an initial intensive training period with the RSPCA before going on to champion one pet for adoption by the show’s audience. Viewers will be able to apply to adopt the featured pets via the itv.com website and successful applicants will be featured on the following week’s show. Give A Pet A Home host Amanda Holden said; “I’m so delighted to be hosting this new series that will look into the amazing work the RSPCA do, and hopefully we’ll be able to find some much needed new homes for the pets featured on the show. I am just going to have to stop myself from taking them all home with me!” The RSPCA added; "The RSPCA rescues and rehabilitates thousands of animals every year, so it’s fantastic to be joining forces with ITV and a team of Celebrity Volunteers to help give even more animals a chance to find their perfect, forever homes. I'm sure the Celebrities and ITV viewers will have their heartstrings pulled as we see the stories of some of the amazing animals in the RSPCA's care."

ad news reaches us this week that Lara Stone is to serve divorce papers on David Walliams. The Little Britain star is said to be throwing himself into work in an effort to cope with the strain of separation and is currently in discussions with the BBC to turn two of his bestselling children’s books into TV gold for our viewing pleasure this coming Christmas, and for the 2016 festive season. If you loved Gangsta Granny (which starred Miranda Hart and Robbie Williams) and The Boy in the Dress (where we glimpsed Kate Moss on screen) you’ll be delighted to hear that Walliams’ Billionaire Boy will screen this year, with Awful Auntie hitting screens next. Commenting on his TV adaptations, the Britain’s Got Talent judge said; "It's great seeing them on screen because you feel like a magician – something in your head becomes this real, physical thing … I don't know who's going to be in Billionaire Boy yet but there are a few good parts. And I'm sure I will pop up somewhere."

S

eanwhile, next door, David Walliams’ neighbour, multiplatinum selling and Grammy / Oscar / BRIT /everything winner Adele has had some good news. Her 2011 album, 21, has been named as the bestselling UK album of the millennium. 21 hit the top spot in over 30 countries, selling over 11 million copies worldwide and almost five million in the UK.

nyone who sees me on Facebook will no doubt have seen that I have a new profile pic. Well not new exactly new but rather old, at least 35 years old. I received a request from an old friend, someone who I had not seen for years and years, and after chatting for a while he said that he had a picture of me from back then and that he would send it. I was fascinated as back then we did not have digital cameras and certainly not phones with cameras built in. A photograph back then took effort, it took work and unlike today, where we snap away like loons, a photograph was something special. After a short while the picture arrived and to say that it was special would be seriously

A picture paints a thousand words ... understating the facts. I thought it might have been a snapshot, me at a party or at a launch event from my book publishing days. Far from it, this was a studio shot that had taken time to do, a time that I remember well. The friend said that he was embarrassed at not being able to remember the name of the photographer who had given him the picture. It took me a few moments’ reflection to place it but I knew it would come to me and after a few minutes it did. The picture was taken by my friend Tony, and sadly Tony was taken by AIDS, many years back when there was no medication that would keep him alive. Tony was a fun friend, a hairdresser by day and a very good photographer in his spare time. I remember his poignant portraits of his mother, images that captured a sadness as well as a serenity. I'm not sure that these are qualities that he captured in me. What he did capture though was a mood of the time – and the fact that I was a lot thinner back then. We did the pictures at his home in Brixton and he asked me to

Well I'm not a conventional dresser now and back then I was even more outré. Tony selected the flouncy shirt with huge sleeves and frilled cuffs and a lace edged jabot. They were amongst my favourites and you might think that I wore them for parties and clubbing. In fact I wore them to work, and one day, cycling over Lambeth Bridge, I was spotted by a German coach full of youngsters who caused the

vehicle to lurch across two lanes as they all piled to one side to view the spectacle of me caught by the wind and looking like a huge frilled jelly fish riding a racing bike. Happy days. Anyway, thank you David for sharing this with me and bringing back both happy and sad memories, and thank you Tony for capturing that time so well.

The show visits Theatre Royal Brighton from Monday 13 to Saturday 18 April for a limited run of eight performances as part of a UK tour. The cast includes the award winning comedian Jason Manford, who has won huge critical acclaim for his acting ability and vocal range in the role of Leo Bloom. He is joined by the much loved Phill Jupitus, described by one critic as a “scene stealing delight”. UNLOCKING POTENTIAL

n 1803 Dalton announced his “atomic theory”, that atoms are the building blocks of matter. However, like most new theories, it received a luke warm reception. It would take the scientific community 100 years to embrace the concept of atoms. Robert Brown, in 1827, observed via a microscope that pollen grains when placed in a liquid darted about, and this was termed Brownian motion. In 1905 Einstein developed a mathematical formula (known as the ‘random walk’) to predict Brownian motion. He explained that as small particles (such as pollen grains) moved about in a liquid, they are being pushed about by much smaller atoms in every direction. Einstein’s predictions were then verified in experimental work carried out by Perrin in 1908 and the atomic theory was finally universally accepted. School children are expected to understand the concept of the atomic theory within a few well planned out lessons, and regurgitate what they have learnt at the end of each lesson. If they

ou may not realise it, but there are all sorts of interesting and unusual places to visit on the Brighton & Hove bus network – stretching out to Eastbourne, the South Downs, and Steyning to name but a few. This week: Devil’s Dyke. There are so many unique things to see and do at Devil’s Dyke. This location is one of the most iconic landmarks in the South East, holding the distinction of being the longest ‘dry’ valley in the UK. Be it on sunny days or foggy evenings, it has many spectacular panoramas to show to its visitors. Aside from the amazing views of the South Downs, Devil’s Dyke also contains ruined ramparts of an Iron Age hill fort and the remains of a Victorian funfair. And on the right day, you might see some adventurous hang-gliders float through the sky above the valley (or perhaps you might join them yourself!). The South Downs Way passes nearby, so for those walkers out there it could be just the start of an adventurous day out rambling. There is an excellent pub right by the Dyke, and Brighton & Hove Buses service 77 drops you off at the car park next to the pub. Between mid-June and August, the bus is an open top double decker to give you un-parallelled panoramic views on your way to the Dyke. Getting to Devil’s Dyke: Route 77, ‘Breeze up to the Downs’, runs on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays as often as hourly. From 19 April the service will run every day, and from midJune to August it will also run every 30 minutes. Full timetable available at buses.co.uk/77 We have a range of tickets for day travel, from individual tickets to family tickets – visit buses.co.uk to find out more For all the information on Devil’s Dyke, visit the National Trust’s website: www.nationaltrust.org.uk.

A generation of school children have been reduced to a set of numbers and data

haven’t grasped the concepts then quite frankly it’s tough, since there is an exam syllabus to get through. These children will basically be driven through the drill of passing exam questions by rote learning because there simply isn’t time. And this is why I am all for the ‘slow education’ movement (sloweducation.co.uk). I worked in the thick of the business, target-driven culture of the ‘90s and completely signed up to efficient, effective, target-driven policies. However, this culture has spread into education, where it most definitely does not belong. A generation of school children have been reduced to a set of numbers and data representing a production line. STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) is not target-driven; it is project based and puts the child’s learning and natural curiosity for the world around them, centre stage. It was great to be able to share our STEM ideas and successes with the next cohort of science teachers from the University of Sussex, recently. Wishing them loads of luck!

FILM

Jessica Kellgren-Hayes

HOTLIST

LOVING THE CLASSICS have always been a little old fashioned, even from an early age – when I chose to wear smocks and petticoats over jeans. I still don't own a single pair of trousers, as sacrilegious as that might sound! My clothes always have a vintage twist, my hair is set with rollers, my furniture is antique and I've never quite managed to wrap my mind around double glazing (people don't like drafty old houses?!). My favourite 'old' thing is that subset of cinema regarded as 'classic'. Five years ago, whilst studying the history of cinema, I started a YouTube blog called 'The Classical Review' where I review old films and invite my audience to suggest films they consider to be 'classics'. Today the blog is part of Latest TV's film review show, PostFeature, which I present with Joseph Gunn. Each week I look at a classic film that ties to the newly released feature film we review in the main part of the show. For this week's episode, I review Fahrenheit 451 from 1966; set in a dystopian future, it is based on Ray Bradbury's novel and directed by French master of cinema, Francois Truffaut. Protagonist Guy Montag is a firefighter living in a lonely, isolated society where books have been outlawed by a government afraid of an independent-thinking public. The job of a ‘Firefighter’ is to find and burn on sight all books, aided by civilian 'informants'. People are drugged into complacency, completely illiterate and getting their information from wall-length television screens. The film's opening credits are spoken rather than displayed in type, the director's hint of what life would be like in an illiterate culture. Yet, after falling in love with book-hoarding Clarisse and beginning to read confiscated books, Montag begins to question the government's motives behind book-burning. It's a wonderful film but Truffaut wasn’t happy with it, and his remarks about the film are responsible for it’s low reputation. It was his white whale; taking four years to put the production together. The shoot in England proved difficult for Truffaut – in part because he spoke no English (helpful!) but largely because working with his lead actor, Oskar Werner, was near impossible. Rather than keeping their conflicts out of the press, Truffaut decided to break the story himself, publishing excepts of his diary. The account told of a difficult and unpleasant experience filming with Werner, including Truffaut’s shock when his actor arrived on set one day with an entirely new haircut! To find out more about the film, watch PostFeature on Wednesday at 6.30pm or check the listings for repeats. Classical reviews are also uploaded to my YouTube channel.

The Theatre has also enjoyed significant success beyond Chichester during their leadership with 48 productions transferring to the West End or securing international and UK tours. These include Lucy Prebble’s ENRON, Macbeth with Patrick Stewart, Singin’ in the Rain, Sweeney Todd, Private Lives, King Lear with Frank Langella, The Pajama Game, Jonathan Church’s production of Taken at Midnight and Gypsy directed by Jonathan Kent. Jonathan Church said; “It has been a privilege and a joy to have been the custodians of this very special theatre for the last decade and to have worked alongside some of the country’s most skilled actors and creative teams. I hope, between us, we have helped contribute to the current strength of British theatre and demonstrated the important role of subsidy in creating vibrant regional arts organisations that are rooted in their community but also have the ability to provide national and international impact.” Alan Finch said; “We are incredibly fortunate to have some of the most loyal audiences, generous supporters and sponsors I have ever come across. Without their support, Jonathan and I would never have been able to achieve what we have.” Sir William Castell, Chairman of Chichester Festival Theatre, said; “Jonathan Church and Alan Finch have led Chichester Festival Theatre to extraordinary levels of success, and our artistic standards and reputation have never been higher. We will be sad to see them leave, but they are committed to our phased succession plans and will deliver the next two Festivals to ensure a smooth handover as we head into the Theatre’s next chapter.”

DIZRAELI Jeff Hemmings chats with the frontman s frontman for Dizraeli & The Small Gods, who now feature Female Beatbox Champion Bellatrix, Dizraeli set up the band in order to tour his debut solo album, Engurland (Seaside Shanties), in 2009. Nestled alongside various other projects Dizraeli is involved with, The Small Gods released the Moving In The Dark album in 2013 and have an extensive summer and autumn of activity lined up, including a UK tour, and the release of two EPs. Bristol raised, he moved to Brighton to go to university where he did English Literature and French, whilst continuing his passion for DJing, rapping, and music in general. "The Brighton scene then was wicked; we had a strong collective of bands, all at a similar kind of level: the Resonators, King Porter Stomp, Samsara, and Bad Science, which was my band. We used to pool our resources together, put on nights (such as the

A

infamous Comm:Unity nights), do a radio show on Radio Reverb, there was a really strong sense of musical community. I really hope that still exists in Brighton." As a rapper and lyricist, Dizraeli is one of the very best. And it's about as far away from Gangsta Rap as you could get; intelligent, witty and satirical, there's a strong leaning towards social justice within his work. "The first rap I ever wrote was about the greenhouse effect, the ozone layer specifically. My dad was an environmental activist, and when I was growing up I used to go to to a lot of demonstrations, reclaim the streets rallies, things like that. I remember my first rap because I found my Dennis The Menace notebook, when I was nine years old, just the other day… 'If you want to be a rocking' and a rollin' you got take care of the ozone/you don't' treat the earth like a compost pit, you do that man, get out of it.' "Will Smith, believe it or not, when he was the Fresh Prince with Jazzy Jeff, was big for me. I guess like any kid I wanted to be cool. I always loved poetry from a really young age, I hoovered up books.

Rap just seems to be an extension of that storytelling. He became so good at it that he won the inaugural BBC Radio Four Slam Poetry Award in 2007. Where did the name Dizraeli come from? "I was flicking through a history book, looking for a name to call myself when I was 15, saw the word Dizraeli and chose it, and it stuck. 17 years later! It has become me." Benjamin Disraeli (with an 's' and not a 'z')is perhaps one of the most famous Prime Ministers in British history, and is best known as the father of the modern Conservative Party. "Most people don't know that," says Dizraeli of his (almost) namesake. "You'd be surprised… and I'm kind of glad for that, because it's nothing to do with me at all. He was a tory, an imperialist…" For this gig, under the name Ghost Lights, Dizraeli will be performing solo as well as live collaborations with Bellatrix, Reeps One and Rex Domino. MEAT FEAST Spamalot, Theatre Royal Brighton, 31 March, 2015 ★★★★★ Andrew Kay

Love Supreme Jazz Festival 2015

What a joy to see a show for the fifth time and still find it as entertaining as the first. The musical reworking of the Python’s Holy Grail is a masterpiece of comedic musical theatre. The humour is true to the original, the songs wonderfully spoof Broadway genres and the attention to detail, where the show is playing and timely references, keep it fresh. You seldom see a show where the cast seem to be having as much fun as the audience (without resenting it) and this time round the cast of young performers is as strong as ever. Joe Pasquale makes the role of King Arthur his very own, a saucy performance that makes you forget that his singing voice is a little weak. Once again Todd Carty steals the show with a comedy performance that displays a fine sense of pathos and superb comedy timing, he can sing too, and his vocal in ‘I’m All Alone’ is not only funny but rather moving. I could go again tonight, and tomorrow, and …

John Bishop – Supersonic John Bishop is blown away by his life, and he wants you to know it. It’s been such a change, and he mines it for the fun and the ridiculous, from being upgraded with Air Emirates, to hod-carrying

in Africa. However, his is still ‘Dad comedy’. By that I mean that the dodgy foreign accents and sexist generalisations are never far away. That said, he has a bagful of nifty turns of phrase well and produces a pleasant evening’s worth of stand-up. He’s a good club comic, but with more smiles and chuckles than uproarious laughter. Brighton Centre, 31 March 2015 ★★★★★ Victoria Nangle

British folk song collector Sam Lee is the 21st century version of Alan Lomax and Cecil Sharp, and was in town to promote new album ‘The Fade In Time’, comprised of ancient traveller songs. Each number came with its own history lesson as Sam detailed the region it originated from and the person that taught it to him. From Cornish Gipsy ballads to Aberdonian campfire songs, he has saved these hand-me-downs from extinction and given them a modern polish while retaining their roots. Tributes were paid to local singers, and the mesmerising performance ended with a stunning acapella encore. Corn Exchange, Brighton Dome, 28 March 2015 ★★★★★ Steve Clements

Courtney Barnett With a universally praised album and a packed house for her tour’s opening night, the Aussie indie star didn’t disappoint. Her set was a mix of uptempo grungey psychedelia and laid back ’70s slacker grooves that were complimented by the everchanging animated backdrop, only ‘Small Poppies’ changing the pace with its bluesy Siouxsie sound. Her brief chats were playful as she teased the audience with ‘guess the intro’ that became ‘Avant Gardener’ which kept the moshpit moving; the narrative lyrics perfectly suited to her talking singing style. The hour ended abruptly with a pounding ‘Pedestrian At Best’, which she most definitely wasn’t. Concorde 2, 27 March 2015 ★★★★★ Steve Clements
