T
he last few weekends have had one thing in common for me: sitting round for hours surrounded by truly beautiful artistic creations whilst meeting random interesting people. Yes, I have been exhibiting in the Artist Open Houses this year, for the very first time, and it really is a joy. First off, the open house I’m a part of is called The Magic Lamp, it’s on the Seven Dials Trail, and has ten different contributors, which I gather is rather a lot. My contribution to proceedings comes under the umbrella of ‘soft furnishings’, which consists of large stripey warm handknitted blankets (took me over a month each to make!), and what we are now calling ‘Vintage T Cushions’. You know those t-shirts that sit in the back of the wardrobe with the best logo/film poster/random image on them but never get worn? That’s what these are, except I’ve sewn them up into cushions. Clearly I am more reluctant than most to lose a Hong Kong Phooey™ t-shirt simply because it doesn’t fit anymore. There are some great artists there, from a world of miniature staircases with planters and lamps, to Orc statuettes, classic Brighton iconic images, leather bags, hand-made furniture, and heaps more. The best thing though is the people. The ones that come through the door for a good old nose around. They’re magic. One older gentleman marched in and firmly sat down next to me on a sofa, heaving a sigh of relief as he took the weight off his feet. “Welcome,” I said. And he was. http://magiclampaoh.wix.com/magiclamp Artist Open Houses are open 10.30–5.30pm, Saturday 23 - Sunday 24 May

ANDREW KAY CURTAIN UP Why I love – and hate theatre
SPONSORED BY
Bardsley’s Fish & Chips
Follow me: latestandrew
I
spend a remarkable amount of my life in darkened rooms. I’ve been doing it since I was a kid and I cannot imagine that I will ever stop. I’m talking about theatre, I love it, in its many forms, and working for a magazine has given me the enviable and privileged position of being a regular critic. I recently gave a talk to a young writers group at the Theatre Royal Brighton and spoke to them about the role of a critic. It was a fascinating thing to do, especially for me. I don’t often analyse what it is I am doing when I review, so talking about it clarified a few things in my own mind. Whether it was of any value to them is another matter. Firstly I explained that as a reviewer I do not cherry-pick what I see. I go to a lot and I like some, I am indifferent to some and I hate some. That is the job. A review is not a definitive test of the merit of a piece of performance but is merely an opinion. If I love it, that’s my view and if I hate it that too is my view. It does not necessarily mean that it is bad, even if every other critic and the audience is of one accord. It merely means that none of us liked it. We have strict rules here about reviews. You sit through to the end, sometimes the grim and bitter end. Review tickets are a privilege and one that should be respected, as should the companies that provide them and the people that you see on and experience off stage. There are legendary reviews of plays where the reviewer left before the interval and failed to be aware that in the second half something terrible, or wonderful, happened. Brighton, being the creative place that it is, has a year round offering of theatre and live arts. You can see something most nights, from major tours to experimental works in a wide variety of forms. I freely admit that my love is for more conventional theatre, opera and classical music, although being the age that I am, I get to see a lot of classic pop, from the seventies to the nineties. I like that era and few of my colleagues here seem to want to go so I make the most of it. Brighton has a great balance of venues too, mainstream and what is called Fringe. Last week I saw a Joe Orton at what is perhaps best categorised as a Fringe venue, but the production was certainly worthy of playing in a mainstream house. Hats off to them.

The new Tory government is hardly likely to do much to help to keep the arts alive and vibrant Right now I am immersed in the joy that is the Brighton Festival and Brighton Fringe Festival. This year I decided to not spread myself so thinly, which is a joke, because in the first week I saw ten performances. The second week is less frenetic, thank heavens, although resting at home I do fret that I am missing something wonderful. The one thing that I find, year upon year, is bleating from people that the festivals do not cater for the greater part of the population. I’m not sure that is true, and I am not sure that an arts festival needs to worry that it does not cater for the great part of the population anyway. If you don’t like the arts then a festival is not for you. I don’t think that the Football club makes a great deal of effort to appeal to me, but I’m not bothered. I don’t think it’s their job to try and cater for a man in his fifties who has no interest whatsoever in football. I do on the other hand think that at times arts organisations do themselves no favours by promoting what they do in a far too high-brow manner. There have been a few things this year that I have gone to and thought afterwards that if the psycho-babble in the pre-publicity had merely been paraphrased to say “a very funny play about a couple whose relationship falls apart” or “brilliant acrobatics and feats of human strength” then they might have had a broader appeal. Not that those events were underattended,

not at all, simply that the moaning masses might have realised that this stuff was for them too – and that they would really have enjoyed it. I get as much pleasure from seeing a well executed piece of very commercial theatre as I do from seeing a stunningly innovative work from a cutting edge company presenting something avante-garde, dangerous even. That’s just me. In saying ‘that’s just me’ I urge you to see what you know that you will enjoy, then think just outside of that box, spread your wings and look a little further. I know that by not cherry-picking my diet of entertainment I have discovered things that I really like but might not have ventured forth to try. I love Gilbert and Sullivan these days, I rather like magicians and illusionists – and, dare I say it, there are a few burlesque artists out there who have swayed my opinion and made me think differently from a view that I previously expressed here. Hats off to them, well hats and pretty much everything else off… Having an open mind, and an open heart, to arts and entertainment, has given me a great deal of pleasure and continues to do so. Be brave and embrace our arts scene, attend and support our artists in all areas. By supporting them with bums on seats we are at least helping to secure a future, let’s face it, the new Tory government is hardly likely to do much to help keep the arts alive and vibrant.

Brighton & Hove Buses the only way to tavel This week: South Downs National Park
ne of our teacher’s here, Mr Flynn, has developed connections with the homeless charity Crossover located on Preston Road, Brighton. The students have been busy digging over the outside raised beds at PACA, planting fruits and vegetables ready to donate to the charity’s street kitchen, affectionately named Kitty. The seeds were kindly donated by Bernie (our receptionist). This type of project is a great way to get the students to start thinking about methods of growing food and to make food production more cost effective. We will also be getting chickens at some point to add to the fun! Furthermore, the students have set up their very own LEO’s Club, which will be sponsored by Brighton Lion’s. The Leo Club Program gives young people the opportunity to serve their communities and make a positive impact. Leo’s have started to volunteer on Saturdays at the Crossover charity shop. The Leo’s have been able to get a good essence of how the shop works, as well as, putting their entrepreneurial skills to use. LEO Club Motto: Leadership – Develop skills as a project organizer, time manager and team leader. Experience – Learn how teamwork, cooperation and collaboration can bring exciting changes to your community and the world. Opportunity – Make friends and feel the rewards of community service. At the Crossover shop the LEO students have been making exclusive jewelry using a glass fusing technique. We have also been having a lot of fun with Rasberry Pi’s here at PACA, which requires no growing of fruits or vegetables or baking! University of Sussex students held a workshop for parents and students demonstrating physical computing using Raspberry Pi computers, as well as Lego Mindstorm sets, Arduino’s and Makey-Makey kits. Parents this is coming your way…. so go Google!
The South Downs National Park spans over 1600km of vibrant wildlife, picturesque views, market towns and expansive countryside. From the spectacular chalk cliffs of Seven Sisters to the perfect panoramas of Ditchling Beacon, the park has something to offer any visitor that travels its landscape. The Park is accessible at various points using buses – Brighton & Hove Bus Company route 2, 12, 29, 77, 79 to name a few. Metrobus 270, 271 and 273 also pass through the Park. They also cross the path of the South Downs Way. There are plenty of things to see in the Park but some of the highlights are: Devil’s Dyke - aside from the amazing views of the South Downs, Devil’s Dyke also contains ruined ramparts of an Iron Age hill fort and the remains of a Victorian funfair. And on the right day, you might see some adventurous hang-gliders float through the sky above the valley (or perhaps you might join them yourself!). Take route 77 (buses.co.uk/77 for full times). The South Downs Way passes nearby so for those walkers out there it could be just the start of a day out rambling. There is a pub right by the Dyke and Route 77 drops you off at the car park next to the pub. Ditchling Beacon - close to the South Downs Way and is the highest point in all of East Sussex, giving a spectacular 360 degree view from its summit. Its namesake comes from the fact that it was once a warning beacon, ready to light at times of imminent invasion. Take route 79 at weekends and public holidays (buses.co.uk/79 for full times). The Seven Sisters Country Park - named after the spectacular chalk cliffs that border the English Channel, is also located within the South Downs National Park and provides a combination of coastal views, river runs and lush grassland for a truly scenic nature experience. There’s no shortage of countryside to explore from and vibrant wildlife to examine while you journey on forest and beach walks. Aside from the traditional village pubs, there are numerous family attractions and facilities, including camping and canoeing along the Cuckmere Haven Valley. Catch a Coaster 12 to get there (buses.co.uk/12 for full times).

THE VERY MODEL OF A MODERN GILBERT AND SULLIVAN Sasha Regan’s exquisite all male The Pirates of Penzance comes to the Theatre Royal Brighton or the opening performance of its packed summer season, Theatre Royal Brighton is delighted to present Sasha Regan’s acclaimed all male production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance. This award winning and exquisitely funny take on the much loved comic opera was a major critical and popular success during its London run and proved equally successful in Australia, where it played in Cate Blanchett’s Sydney Theatre. Critics have praised the production’s inventive choreography, freshness, razor sharp wit, the quality of singing of the ensemble harmonies and the sense of pure joy throughout. A classic musical comedy of mistaken identity, The Pirates of Penzance follows young Frederic, a child apprenticed to a band of tender-hearted, orphaned pirates exploring the coastline in search of treasure and romance. It first opened in 1879 and was an immediate triumph for Gilbert and Sullivan, remaining to this day their most popular and successful collaboration. I Am the Very

PRIDE SOCIAL IMPACT FUND
2014’s Brighton Pride Festival and Pride Village Party were hailed a resounding success raising almost £110,000 for local community organisations over the last two years and delivering a safe and diverse weekend with overwhelmingly positive feedback from visitors, Brighton & Hove City Council, Sussex Police, community organisations and local businesses.
Pride photos: © Chris Jepson
After broad feedback from community groups Pride plan to set up a new community fund that’s could benefit local projects where Pride has a social impact on local residents. Brighton Pride director explains. “Last year was the first year that Pride have organised the Village Party. Pride have been gathering feedback for a variety of community sources and the majority of feedback has been positive with many feeling the village party was a safer and more controlled event, but recognise we still have lots of work to do on improving the impact on the local area. Pride is committed to our on-going fundraising for the Rainbow fund but we also hope to set up a new fund that could benefit all our communities in the areas most affected by the social impact of the Pride weekend celebrations. Our priority remains to deliver a safe and sustainable Pride weekend with continued support for the Pride Village Party 2015 from local businesses who benefit over the Pride weekend so that more local good causes that benefit all our communities can be supported in the future”
ACCESS AND MOBILITY
Brighton Pride is delighted to announce the return of the Family Area at the Pride Festival in Preston Park. After the warm welcome the Family Area received last year, the 2015 Pride Family Diversity Area will be bigger than ever before providing a dedicated social space for families and their friends. The new Pride Family Diversity Area is an alcohol-free area and safe space and will include the children’s playground and a wonderful Family Tent with lots of children’s entertainers and activities to enhance your Pride festivities.
Pride are again working in partnership with The Brighton and Hove LGBT Community Safety Forum (LGBT CSF) to facilitate all aspects of accessibility for Brighton Pride and access to Preston Park for those with mobility issues. The LGBT Community Safety Forum is an established independent LGBT forum of volunteers working with the LGBT Community to address and improve safety issues throughout Brighton & Hove. They undertake cultural, educational and social safety community activities and any type of LGBT community/inclusion and accessibility initiative.

LAST CHANCE FOR AN ARTY TRAIL
D
o you think Ian Hodgson will notice if we don’t give him his artwork back after our Open House? I’ve got rather used to the calm, serene spell his exquisite graphite drawings have cast over 12 Kemp Street these past few weeks. Perhaps it’s the influence of the Peace Statue – which he imbues with such emotion and energy she comes to life under the viewer’s gaze. Don’t believe me? Then hot foot it to the AOH Central Trail and see for yourself. This weekend is your last chance to enjoy Brighton & Hove’s annual art lovers’ pilgrimage around the 200 or so houses and studios that open their doors and welcome the public to meet and buy art direct from its creators. Of course, another reason to head for Arty HQ is to buy our latest book – Art in Brighton 2015 – at a special Festival price. It’s our second edition and we’ve been thrilled at all of the new artists who wanted to be included. Some of the most arresting pages come from the digital sphere. And it’s been a revelation to discover the talent of visual artist Heinz Michael Kalkbrenner, who explores the limits and possibilities of different materials and procedures by combining analogue and digital art Growth Work by HMK production methods. HMK creates fine art prints by following an abstracting process that can retain figurative elements and may also have a meditative focus. He is taking part in AOH at the Patcham Arts collective at Patcham Community Centre. So go lose yourself in his mesmerising colour palette while you’ve got Himalaya at Auricula the chance. Out of town: Don’t forget that AOH extends to Ditchling, where you’ll find precious jewellery and silverware with a difference at Pruden and Smith; colourful, covetable gemstone jewellery by Natasha Caughey at Auricula; and one of Brighton’s most popular artists Philip Dunn at the Window Gallery. www.artymagazines.com

THE HORROR OF SOCIAL MEDIA
few weeks ago in this column I wrote about horror films and how they have adapted to suit the modern world (what do directors do when every character has a mobile phone and is capable of calling for help or just Googling how to stop the demon?) and in the latest PostFeature we reviewed new horror Unfriended. Zombies and Vampires are no longer the threat- it’s 2015 and there are far scarier things among us: Snapchat, awkward Facebook photos, trolling, Skype calls when you’re not looking your best… Unfriended is a Millennial-friendly slickly scary flick that anyone over the age of 40 will struggle to understand but, should they be parents, should certainly scare their socks off! We open with a YouTube video of one time high-school queen Laura Barnes shooting herself in the head after prolonged online public shaming. It is the one-yearanniversary of her suicide and of course her ghost, as all ghosts do, pays close attention to the calendar. Possibly you’re thinking that this doesn’t sound too radical or exciting yet but Unfriended is novel in that it consists of one long, beautifully faked shot of a girl’s computer screen. Within that screen there are texts, instant messages and Skype boxes containing the faces of main character Blaire’s five closest friends- her boyfriend, his best friend, a fat guy, a pouty blonde, and a sensitive redhead- and one dead ex-friend. The internet might have killed Laura Barnes but now that she’s dead she’ll use it to her advantage. With no soundtrack the score consists of only songs played by the characters on their computers and a lot of clacking typing that evokes the weird clicking sounds coming out of vengeful Japanese/Korean wraiths in theRing and Grudge films. At times the picture fragments as the streaming lags and images pixelate. Characters heads ghost across the screen. The message of the film- other than ‘if you bully someone online, their ghost will use the internet to dismember you’- may be that whilst social media connects us, it also fragments us… These six friends sit alone in separate houses and that may ultimately be their downfall as they are unable to help each other or work as a team. Watching Unfriended on a laptop will be too meta for words but that is how this film is most likely to be seen by its teen audience. The point is that those of us who spend our evenings keeping tabs on one another via Skype, Facebook and other social media tools will perfectly understand the syntax of the film. It’s almost laugh—out-loud funny when what is often known as “the spinning wheel of death” denotes just that. For more on Unfriended and other films out this week, tune in to PostFeature at 6.30pm on Wednesday or check the listings in this magazine for your catch up options. Check our Facebook page, ‘FilmFest on TV’ for more details or email me directly via Jessica@thelatest.tv twitter: @postfeature

THE SUMMER’S MUSICALS Top Hat in Eastbourne and Mack & Mabel in Chichester – the season is filled with song and dance

ith music and lyrics by Irving Berlin and based on the RKO motion picture, West End hit Top Hat, winner of three Olivier Awards, for Best New Musical, Best Choreography, Best Costume Design and winner of the Evening Standard Award for Best Night Out, shuffles its way onto the Congress Theatre stage, Eastbourne from 21 – 25 July for one week only! Nominated for four Academy Awards, RKO’s Top Hat was the most successful motion picture of the nine movies Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers made together. It premiered at Radio City Music Hall in 1935 where it broke all box office records and within a few weeks, all five songs from the film occupied the top five places on the American Hit Parade. It is still widely regarded as one of the greatest dance musicals of all time. Top Hat tells the story of Jerry Travers (played by Alan Burkitt, reprising his West End role), the famous American tap dancer, who arrives in London to appear in his

first West End show. Travers meets the irresistible Dale Tremont (Charlotte Gooch, also reprising her West End role), the girl of his dreams, and follows her across Europe in an attempt to win her heart. Stepping into the shoes of Astaire and Rogers, Alan Burkitt and Charlotte Gooch are joined by Clive Hayward who returns as Horace Hardwick, the role he also played in the West End, Rebecca Thornhill as Madge Hardwick, Sebastien Torkia as Alberto Beddini and John Conroy as Horace’s valet Bates. Performed by a cast of 29 and accompanied by 11 live musicians, this multi award-winning musical comedy includes Irving Berlin classics from the movie such as Cheek to Cheek, Isn’t It a Lovely Day to be Caught in the Rain plus Top Hat, White Tie and Tails. In addition, from Berlin’s 1,200 strong back catalogue, a further
ten numbers have been interpolated including well-loved favourites Let’s Face the Music and Dance and Puttin’ On the Ritz. Top Hat is at the Congress Theatre, Eastbourne from Tuesday 21 – Saturday 25 July 2015, with nightly performances at 7.30pm and three 2.30pm matinees on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. BOTTOM’S UP! What happens when that fringe feeling

couple of years ago someone I respect a great deal pitched me a show which sounded – on paper – like it had all the makings of a car-crash performance. They told me about an company that performed a play from Shakespeare’s canon, in an hour, with a cast of only five – so far so Fringe – but one of the players would be utterly hammered for the entire show. It was one of the best shows I saw all year. As much as it sounds like a wreck of a concept, Shit-Faced Shakespeare really works. It manifests as a performance that The Bard himself would have loved – filled with the debauchery and enthusiasm of the early theatres that caused actors to be seen as such disreputable and attractive creatures. It brings vim and vigor to Shakespeare, and makes you laugh like an unself-conscious hyena at the comedy. And you don’t even need to be familiar with the text beforehand. I know, I promise much, but here’s the skinny: the players take it on rotation as to who is drunk. Before the show starts the audience is shown the empties as testimony as to the capacity of alcohol has been imbibed earlier in the day. And it is the tension between the remaining actors, steadfastly trying to keep the show on track, and the now ‘wild card’ performer that is so compelling. And wildly entertaining. And intoxicating. I hasten to add that you don’t need to drink as an audience member in order to fully enjoy the show. The roustabout atmosphere is enough, and this is not all about embarking on a bacchanalian adventure. The ‘ShitFaced’ and the ‘Shakespeare’ are in equal measure, drawing the audience in, fully involving them as we grab moments of stolen calm between raucous laughter. I’ve seen Shakespeare in many different venues, from The Regents Park Open Air Theatre to a pokey room in Edinburgh and many other places inbetween. This truly is the most immersive way to experience it. The text is a doddle. And the comedy really is comedy. This year the play is ‘Two Gentlemen Of Verona’, and I am utterly unfamiliar with it. I’m tempted to cram a synopsis of the play beforehand from a wiki page, as I might do if I was seeing it straight. I’m more tempted not to though. Such fun! Building a soundtrack in the Brighton Festival
A
recent feature of the Brighton Festival has been the live soundtracking of films, and a highlight of this year's festival will be the first ever live soundtrack of Peter Strickland's The Duke of Burgundy, by Cat's Eyes, a duo made up of The Horrors frontman Faris Badwan and Italian-Canadian singer and composer Rachel Zeffira. "The Director contacted us after hearing our first album," says Faris. "He didn't have funding for the project at the time, but he wanted to meet up. I'd seen Katalin Varga (Strickland's debut feature) and I was really in to it, and he was someone I really respected. "There is no other film like it," says Rachel. "I have watched it, and I am not exaggerating, hundreds of times, so that I understood the atmosphere and what's needed, and where a chord change should go... I liked it more every time. Visually, it's really stunning, but more than that it has a really profound story there. It's not a lesbian S&M film, it's about relationships in a world without men. Very emotional." The musical backgrounds of Faris and Rachel couldn't be much different. "Before I met Faris there were whole areas of

music I had never come across. Embarrassing things. I grew up in a small town where they listened to heavy metal and country music." When they met, Faris was (and still is) making music with indierockers The Horrors, while Rachel was immersed in the world of classical and opera as a singer and oboist. Their first, self-titled, album was influenced by 60s girl groups and the likes of Joe Meek and Phil Spector, and using Zeffira's contacts in the classical world, they set about performing it live. The Duke of Burgundy soundtrack is an extension of that debt, albeit lusher and more cinematic in quality, but still featuring plenty of orchestration. “There are a lot of classical arrangements, which Rachel takes care of,” says Faris. “The show itself will be as close as possible to the actual recording,” says Rachel, including a small orchestra and choir. “Faris will be concentrating on the more experimental sounds you can hear on the soundtrack. This is the first time we have done it. I haven't been to that concert hall (Brighton Dome’s Concert Hall), it looks really beautiful.” Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, 22 May, 8pm, £10-£18.50, 01273 709709, brightondome.org

oe Orton’s writing never fails to make me laugh but this is him at his very best. Parodying the farces so popular in the late fifties and early sixties he turns their lightweight nature completely on its head to deliver a searing attack on almost anything you should care to name. Of course it needs to be delivered with style and confidence and this is exactly what we got at Emporium. Director Patrick Kearn has honed the cast to razor sharp excellence. Brian Capron is wonderfully believable as Dr Prentice the
predatory psychiatrist as his attempt to seduce a prospective secretary goes so terribly wrong. Michael Kirk is delightfully, and believably insane as the Government inspector Dr Rance, obsessed with turning his review of the clinic into a groundbreaking book. Jenny Funnell is superb as Mrs Prentice, playing it so straight that her wild behavior appears normal – well almost. Melissa Clements as Geraldine,

FRIDAY 22 Mary Berry’s Absolute Favourites BBC2, 8pm Spring is here, and with it a whole new batch of super-yummy delicious recipes from Mary Berry. Fancy a picnic? Why not try some of her tantalising mushroom scotch eggs? If you’re after something a bit more substantial then take a note of no-fuss sausage lasagne. Mmm.
Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Channel 4, 8pm Oooh, it’s an uneasy alliance to be forged between Coulson and Gonzales as they try and put their differences aside to work together against the mega-foe that is HYRDRA. Can’t we all just be friends, guys? Guys? Maybe not, but let’s try a bit less globetrotting violence for a bit.
The Goldbergs E4, 7.30pm Every one hates traffic, right? No one wants to be caught in a jam, the radiator over heating, the kids in the next stationary car making faces at you through their window as you’re trapped for an infinity as their sole target of abuse. One day though, one day Barry would like to see the end of a game and not ‘beat the traffic’.
