26 MAY – 1 JUNE
hen I was in my twenties I loved music. Actually, I loved music before then, but it was in my twenties that I recognised people off of Top Of The Pops as friends I’d gone for drinks with. Not necessarily the main artists, but definitely the session strings musicians sawing away alongside them. I knew enough about popular to know that what I knew was a drop in the ocean of what could be known. If you know what I mean. And after a bit, I hate to say it, but it became a bit of a never-ending job finding the energy to go out to all the gigs I wanted to see gigs, as well as go to work, see friends and not be a complete dope to my family. So I stopped. In the beginning of my thirties I saw a rather brilliant comic whose name I wish I could remember. He was on at Krater at Komedia and he told us;” You’ve reached that comedy age. It doesn’t matter how old you are now but you’ve reached that age where when you go out to a club on a Friday night it chiefly involves sitting down.” I laughed loudly, agreeing to myself that, yes – I had moved on from the music that was sounding the same, and I let go of modern music almost completely. This month I went to a showcase in The Great Escape, the first interaction I’ve ever had with The Great Escape after living in Brighton for over a decade, and reader... I loved it. Music doesn’t all sound the same and I was a fool for simply losing the energy to explore beyond my own front door of gig nights. Slap my wrist! I bounced along utterly immersed and captivated by the young punky melodies and sharp lyrics of The Magnettes, over from Sweden. Tears of jealousy and joy prickled my eyes at the energy and bold freshness I heard from Norway’s Mariann Rosa. And I closed my eyes and let the bliss flood over me as The Zombies closed the afternoon’s session with a rendition of their 60s hit ‘She’s Not There’. I was there. She was there. We were all there. Live music rocks! How could I have forgotten?

e’d like to say a huge GOOD LUCK to Felix Foreman – one of the JBPR family who gets married on Saturday 31 May to his lovely fiancée Daisy. Felix is pictured here with Big Brother’s Josie Gibson at Fatboy Slim’s incredible Big Beach Bootique at the Amex. Happy days! Sunday 31 May sees some of the UK’s most exciting and unique urban and contemporary artists descend upon Brighton for the very first artrepublic Art Yard Sale at Jubilee Square on 31 May. All of the artists taking part in this exciting event will be running their very own stalls so this is a great opportunity to buy exclusive art direct from the artist. Artists will be creating bespoke works only available at the Yard Sale – for example Brighton based artist Eelus will be screen printing live on Jubilee Square and global hit Pure Evil will be running an art lotto where punters can buy limited edition scratch card prints in order to win his LAST MARILYN painting (pictured). We are extremely excited (and a little bit hungry) at the thought of AVM Curiosities, founded by food historian Tasha Marks, who will be displaying her amazing edible art creations including a chocolate edition of The Last Supper (pictured). Last week we headed over the Big Beach Café on Hove Lagoon and caught up with Brighton legend and global superstar DJ Fatboy Slim (pictured here). Officially one of nicest men on the planet, Norm will be supporting his adopted home city and the Pride cause by playing a live set at this years Brighton Pride, which takes place on Preston Park on Saturday 30 August. Another Brightonian doing great work in putting our city on the map is best-selling crime write Peter James - Peter and Norman's worlds will collide this week as the author launches You Are Dead, the latest instalment in his wildly successful awardwinning Detective Superintendent Roy Grace crime series. Set in Brighton, the eleventh DS Grace novel features Fatboy's Big Beach Café as a location for one of it's pivotal plot turns and so the author has chosen the DJ's café for a launch event for You Are Dead which takes place on Tuesday 28 May. Norman and Peter will both be there in the flesh; so if you like your crime served up with a side order of 'Eat, Sleep, Rave, Repeat' get down to Hove Lagoon then. For those of you that miss this appearance, Peter will be doing further Sussex dates on his book tour; so visit www.peterjames.com/appearances for more information. Fans of Fatboy can get tickets to see him rocking Preston Park for Brighton Pride at www.brighton-pride.org/

ANDREW KAY FIGHTING BACK I’m falling apart at the seams
SPONSORED BY Bardsley’s Fish & Chips
Follow me: latestandrew t’s possibly the busiest week of my year, filming an episode of International Chef Exchange with a chef and team from Vancouver, food festival events and the Brighton Festival all clashing in a way that had already got my head spinning. I was already concerned about how I would manage to fit everything in. Then snap! I did my back in. Yes, a simple misjudged twist as I got up from a scanner at the hospital (nothing serious, a routine check-up) and within the space of a few hours I was rendered immobile. Not good, as by the time my lower back had frozen in an agonising spasm I was in London. I promise you that the return journey, on a train that seemed to lurch from side to side far more than it normally would, was excruciating. The subsequent cab ride home was worse and I cursed loudly as we jolted over every single speed bump. I struggled down the steps to my flat, lowered myself onto my bed and tried to sleep. It was a fitful night and by 5am the following morning I was wide awake and stuck. It’s at moments like this that the bliss of living alone is shattered. I eventually managed to roll off the bed and crawl to a hard back chair. From there I managed to get up and start my search for help. Fortunately I remembered that a friend had recommended an osteopath in Kemp Town just a few weeks back. I waited until 8am then texted him with a cry for help. Fortunately for me the phone was answered and the osteopath was able to see me at noon. Four hours away but at least he had a slot for me. I spent the next three and a half hours struggling to wash and dress, not an easy task I can tell you. I had never considered how complex the putting on of a sock is until I had to try and do it without being able to bend at the waist. A good friend drove me over and within a few minutes I was in his office explaining what I had done in the hope that he could help. This was not my first visit to an osteopath, I have used their services before and have always been very impressed. Firstly impressed by the depth of questioning that he went to about my general well-being, then by his careful and slow examination. There was no ploughing in here and for that I was more than grateful, at that point the idea of anyone doing anything physical was filling me with

I cursed loudly as we jolted over every single speed bump horror. Oh I know that visiting an osteopath and at the same time hoping that there would be no physical contact was a pretty daft idea but I promise you, by this point I was hardly thinking rationally. He ran through a series of tests, gentle as can be, and then sat me back down to discuss options. Options were very welcome but quite frankly I would have let him run electric currents through my head if he had told me that it would take away the pain. His chosen path was acupuncture. Now I am no stranger to acupuncture although the type I had experienced was classic traditional style involving cones of a herb that is place on your skin and set alight before a needle is inserted and immediately removed. Modern acupuncture omits the herbs but the needles are left in for a longer period. The needles do not hurt, really they do not, although I would happily have let him use meat skewers if he had said that it was necessary. It sounds like I am drifting off into some weird S&M revery, and given the number of pain killers I have indulged in that would be entirely possible – well not really, pain is so not my kind of thing. Someone once asked me to tie them up and I said no, I did not have anything to do it with even if I had wanted to. They pointed to my collection of beautiful silk ties at which point I threw them out. Well a man has standards to maintain does he not? As usual I digress. I agreed to the acupuncture and gingerly lowered myself onto his couch and assumed a position on my side with one knee up. It was the most comfortable I had been for a good 20 hours. I could hear him washing and sanitising his hands and then ever so gently he inserted the needles, explaining things as he did. All I felt was a gentle tap and with some a slight prick, with some no prick at all. There I rested, the calmest I had been for some time. I have no idea how long for either, simply zoned out and prayed that the needles would do the trick.
• LATEST 7 7
A while later he removed them, again I felt nothing, and on his instruction I sat on the edge of the couch. It was far easier than lying down had been, which I took as a good sign. He then went through a series of exercises that I was to do on my return home and over the next few days. I feared that they would be agony but they were okay, not without some discomfort but definitely possible. He also suggested that I stayed mobile and did not allow it to freeze up again. I paid, made a second appointment for the following week and left, walking a few hundred yards, which an hour later would have been impossible, before calling my friend for help and a lift home. By this point it was about 1.30pm and I was able to make a sandwich, the first food of the day, yes, me not eating for that long has to be some kind of proof of the extent of pain I was suffering. Today I have managed o get out of bed and into the shower, quite a feat I can tell you, and although I have managed to dress I failed to get socks on, so right now I look like one of those French men that favour that no sock and loafer look that I find rather odd – and given that spring is late going out so cold. Still, I am at my desk with a hot water bottle behind me and a screen slightly blurred by the pain killers. I cannot thank enough the osteopath Mark Andrews at the Kemptown Osteopathic Clinic, who took me out of agony to bearable discomfort in such a short space of time, and I feel confident that my second visit will prove equally satisfactory. If you see me about please refrain from slapping me on the back or any other physical expressions of greeting. had to share this information from BBC news with you since it is something I alluded too in a previous column and it’s rather nice to think that Pricewaterhouse Coopers (rated by the Sunday Times for the past 12 years as the top graduate employer) are actually doing something about it!! PwC are one of the UK's largest graduate employers and they are going to stop using A-level grades as a way of selecting graduate recruits. Until now, the firm has not considered any applicants who failed to reach a defined threshold of A-level grades. However, PwC said that using the grades to filter candidates could disadvantage those from poorer backgrounds and this change in their policy could "drive radical changes" in social mobility and diversity. Richard Irwin, PwC's head of student recruitment, said: "We want to target bright, talented people and extend our career opportunities to untapped talent in wider pockets of society. Our experience shows that whilst A-level assessment can indicate potential, for far too many students there are other factors that influence results. Competition and assessment for our graduate roles will be as tough as ever but those that want to get on with a career in business can do so." Gaenor Bagley, board member and head of people at PwC, said: "Removing the Ucas criteria will create a fairer and more modern system in which students are selected on their own merit, irrespective of their background or where they are from." Stephen Isherwood, chief executive of the Association of Graduate Recruiters, said: "Using a candidate's Ucas points to assess their potential is a blunt tool and a barrier to social mobility. This is an innovative step by one of the most significant graduate recruiters in the UK. Other graduate employers should follow their lead." This really is fantastic news, which kind of makes up for the announcement that Boris Johnson’s brother, who apparently knows nothing about science, has just been appointed Minister for Universities and Science!?!

Things to do and see in Lewes ewes is a picturesque historic town in East Sussex located within the expansive South Downs National Park. From serving as a stronghold during the Norman invasion of England in 1066 to being the home of the largest and most popular bonfire festival in the United Kingdom, it’s a town that has a fascinating timeline of cultural landmarks and history. Filled with weaving roads and backstreets, Lewes rewards intrepid explorers with access to small independent retailers, antiques and bookshops. The All Saints Centre acts as an assortment of the arts, holding live performances and cinema screenings, whilst the numerous museums and farms give visitors an insight into the unique nature of the town. There’s a farmers’ market on the first Saturday of every month for local fare. And after you’re done for the day, why not visit the local pubs and enjoy the products of Harvey’s Bridge Wharf Brewery, the last surviving Victorian brewery in Lewes? For a little more information on the town, take a look at its page on www.visitsussex.org/page/lewes/

CURRY & CHIPS
The hilarious West End hit East Is East arrives at Theatre Royal Brighton ollowing a sensational West End run, the modern comedy classic East is East opens at Theatre Royal Brighton next month. Written by the acclaimed playwright Ayub Khan Din, and starring the hilarious Pauline McLynn (Father Ted, Shameless and EastEnders), East Is East was originally performed in 1996 and was later made into a world renowned film. The play takes as its raw material the cultural clashes Khan Din witnessed as he and his nine Anglicised siblings, brought up in a crowded Salford household with a Pakistani father and a white English mother, fought against the straitjacket of Muslim tradition. Khan Din’s father had left Kashmir in 1929, worked his passage to the UK and eventually settled in Salford. Yet having defied his own father to come to England and marry an Englishwoman, he tried to dominate his own sons, to make them work in the family chip shop

and marry brides chosen for them against their will, whom they had never met before. “He tried to squash in his own kids the spark of rebelliousness that he had. It was always ‘I’m your father. You’re Pakistani. Do as I say.’” explains Khan Din. No one dared ask him “If Pakistani women are so great, why did you marry my mum?” - “You’d have got beaten up. He was a very big man.” “My parents had a fantastic relationship except when it came to the kids because my mum always supported us,” he explains. “Whenever someone wanted to do something other than work in a fish and chip shop there would be a massive argument.” The playwright’s alter ego is a traumatised boy called Sajit who spends half his time hiding in the coal shed and wears a huge Parka like a comfort blanket. Like much of the play, the Parka is based on remembered experience. “I lived in it for months and no one really bothered me. I only took it off to

have a bath.” Like Ayub, many of Khan Din’s brothers took a creative path away from their father’s orbit, through art school or hairdressing. Half of them turned out gay. “He never got on with my brothers who were gay. He came to accept my other brothers who had married English girls and the grandchildren.” Both Khan Din’s parents died before the play premiered. What does the playwright think his father would make of East is East? “I don’t know. In later life he had a lot of regrets but it was too late for him to do anything about them. At that age he would have appreciated it and laughed with it and probably learnt something from it.” Don’t miss this “best of British” comedy when it opens at Theatre Royal Brighton before a UK tour. www.atgtickets.com/brighton 0844 871 7650 Thu 11 – Sat 20 Jun

ANDREW KAY
DOWN WITH THE KIDS
Join me on Hove Lawns for the Brighton and Hove Food and Drink Festival ince the launch of Latest TV I have been making programmes for the channel that are specifically about food. International Chef Exchange has been an exciting adventure, working with the Brighton and Hove Food and Drink Festival and bringing chefs here from Holland, Sweden, Sicily, Guernsey and Vancouver. There will be seven, hour long programmes in total and the bonds that have been made between the visting chefs to Brighton and the Brighton chefs who have returned to their countries are very strong. I have loved the whole process and hope that we can continue with the project in the future. Cook It! has been equally exciting. Much as a I love restaurants, I really love cooking. In recent years I have been dismayed by the change in the way people eat, shop for food and depend on convenience foods. Cook It! has been all about empowering people to get back in their own kitchens and cook with confidence. We have worked with brilliant local chefs, challenging them to create simple dishes that are tasty, healthy and easy to make – and at the same time economical. I wanted to show people that you can make a tasty meal in the same time as it takes to re-heat a ready meal, and know that the ingredients are the best that you can afford. We include weekly tips, features on building a store cupboard of essentials on a week by week basis, spreading the cost and giving viewers a rich palette of flavours with which they could tempt the palate. Both programmes have given me immense pleasure and also a great

Please come and join me and the food festival team for what promises to be a great family day out response. I love it that people come up to me in the street to talk about Cook It!. Best of all though has to be the weekly section Cook It! with Kids! It was the part of the programme that was most worrying. My co-producer and director, Mr Sourdough himself Nick Beddows, was very nervous. After years of experience in TV he stood by the old adage, never work with kids or animals. Well I wanted to have kids cooking animals, amongst other things. Funnily enough, from our first day in the studio it was obvious that the kids slot was going to work. On day one the kids were brilliant, engaged,
excited and delightful. And so it went for thirteen epsisodes. Nick and I were thrilled. I have always enjoyed cooking with my nephews, both picky eaters, and introducing them to things that are tasty, fun and healthy. It’s not all about dull stuff either, we have made tasty alternatives to commercial products that are easy to do, both savoury and sweet. This coming weekend I will be down on Hove Lawns doing my other favourite thing which is host the Live Food Show, great fun, great chefs and great food. Children’s Charity, our Children’s Food Festival goes large – and we mean LARGE – for one special day at the end of the school holidays. We’ve always championed accessible food events for little ones and this year is epic. On the Live Food Show stage we’ll have performances from Signor Baffo, and I will be filming a special kid’s food edition of Latest TV’s ‘Cook It!’ show. My First Word nursery and children’s party organisers Whizz Bang Pop will be keeping little ones entertained whilst local restaurants will be hosting interactive workshops for little foodies including Moshimo, Chocoholly and Curry Leaf Café. This will also be your final day to help us choose the winner of the Great Brighton Ice Cream Contest hosted in partnership with our pals at Boho Gelato and Rockinghorse. We’ve also got the Wobblegate Apple Juice ‘Wobblympics’ challenge, and you can learn all about the importance of keeping your teeth and gums clean after eating with the Dental Health Spa team. Our charity partners Rockinghorse will be on hand, whilst FareShare will be busy on badges and facepainting (and teaming up with festival sponsor Yelo Architects to get creative with food packaging waste). Please come and join me and the food festival team for what promises to be a great family day out – you may even get to join me on stage as we film Cook It With Kids! for a later broadcast. A parent or guardian must remain with their children at all times at this event. Our workshops, performances and interactive activities are all free to participate in. Food and drink will be available to purchase, and there is an additional cost for any fairground rides (of which a donation will be made to the Rockinghorse Children’s Charity).

ZOMBIES ON THE BRAIN s regular viewers of PostFeature, the film review show I copresent with Joseph Gunn on Latest TV, (and I'm hoping that's all of you! ahem, ahem...) will know; the two of us have widely differing tastes in film with just a few crossovers, mainly of the superhero variety! One genre we greatly disagree on is anything involving a zombie. Yet, in this week's episode, on Wednesday at 6.30pm, we will be looking exclusively at zombie films. Yes, zombie films. I'm so anti-zombie it will be worth tuning in just to watch me squirm! But... Joseph can be a pretty persuasive chap when he wants to be so perhaps he will change my mind. In preparation for the episode I have been watching 1932's White Zombie, the first ever feature length zombie film. It was a poorly-funded, independent film with most of the props borrowed from past horror films and most of its budget going on star villain Bela Lugosi. The plot is poor, the acting is awful and the costume make up is not worth mentioning. Excepting Lugosi's eyebrows of course, which are magnificence beyond belief! The story begins in Haiti with a carriage carrying a holidaying couple being stopped by a funeral taking place in the middle of the road. The driver explains that the family do not want the body stolen so they are burying it where regular traffic will keep people from trying. The couple later cross paths with an eerie gentleman and his odd henchmen. The driver again explains that the henchmen are not just strangely acting people (although they are that too: small budget, not great extras) but zombies. In Haiti the living dead that are made to work in the fields and factories. The couple, Neil Parker and his fianceé Madeleine, played by old silent film stars John Harron and Madge Bellamy, are staying at the home of Charles Beaumont to be wed. Unfortunately, Beaumont is rather taken with Madeline and will do anything to have her, including turning her into a zombie! Harron and Bellamy were silent film stars who had fallen out of favour in the era of the 'talkies'- unsurprising given their over the top mannerisms and flat line readings. Best to watch this film with the sound off, but certainly do take the time to see it. The full version can be found on YouTube. White Zombie has a number of beautiful Expressionistic touches: When Neil broods over the loss of Madeleine in a nightclub we see no other patrons, just their shadows on the wall behind him. The eerie shadows emphasising how alone and powerless he is. There is also a lot of movement from the camera, an innovative touch at the time. One long scene in the doctor's study is done with no cuts, though the camera moves around; an experiment in technique Hitchcock would likely have appreciated! If you have already missed Wednesday’s episode then check the TV listings in this magazine for catch up details or keep your eye on our twitter account, @PostFeatureTV, for more info Check our Facebook page, ‘FilmFest on TV’ directly via Jessica@thelatest.tv twitter: @postfeature

MAKE BELIEVE Paul Merton, is in town with his Impro Chums with a show that could be about absolutely anything, and he’s eager to see it!
P
aul Merton, one of the best off-the-cuff comedy performers in the country, puts his finger on why doing improvisation is quite such fun. “It’s just doing what we all do as kids – playing endless, imaginative games,” says the immensely popular comedian. “As a child, you don’t need much. I remember as a young boy pushing a toy car up an armchair and suddenly it became a mountain. Kids often unpack a Christmas present and end up playing with the box. Impro is like playtime – the bit of school you liked! If you spark each other off in improvisation, it creates a really good spirit. It’s the spirit of the playground.” And, you will be delighted to hear, you can now enjoy that spirit for yourself as his acclaimed improvisational show, Paul Merton’s Impro Chums, comes to the Theatre Royal Brighton this week. Paul and his Chums - Mike McShane (who has just finished starring in a lauded London production of the Stephen Sondheim musical, Assassins), Lee Simpson, Richard Vranch and Suki Webster – are at the very top of their game. The troupe has been performing to sellout crowds across the country for more than a decade. As they take suggestions from the audience and turn them into wondrously funny routines, they trigger cascades of tumbling laughter. In a variety of dazzling impro games, the group possess an unparalleled ability to spin the audience’s

propositions into comedy gold. The great thing is that every show is a new adventure. Paul, who for the past thirty years has appeared every Sunday in London with the Comedy Store Players and in so doing has entered the Guinness Book of World Records for being part of the world’s longest-running comedy show with the same cast, is just as engaging in person as he is on stage. The 57-year-old comedian, who has gained an immense following over 25 years as a team captain on BBC1’s widely loved topical news quiz, Have I Got News For You, adores live performing above else. He says he can’t wait to be back on stage. “It’s the most fun of all the mediums. There is no hiding place, no laughter track and no cutaways. “People ask me why I do the Comedy Store Players and the Impro Chums, and the answer is that it keeps me match-fit. If I go away on holiday for two weeks, when I come back I find that everyone else has sped up ten per cent. It takes me until the interval to catch up and jump on the bus. There is such a thrill in the notion of playing, say, a Bulgarian lion-tamer trying to explain in fractured Spanish that the yoghurt in the fridge has gone off. It’s a complete delight!” Paul, who last year published a highly successful autobiography, Only When I Laugh, goes on to expand on just why after all these years impro continues to give him such a rush. “I still get the same buzz as ever from doing it. Once the audience’s trust has been won and the laughter has started, you can really start to play. There is a

tremendous thrill in seeing something completely unexpected unfold before you. You have taken a shouted-out suggestion, and it has turned into a brilliant scene. You have partly created it, and that’s really satisfying.” The other excellent aspect of impro, Paul adds, is that every night is by its nature a total one-off. The comedian, who appears regularly on Radio 4’s Just a Minute, jokes that, “I feel I should say at the end of every show, ‘Don’t worry – this will never happen again!’” Impro also keeps you honest, reckons Paul, who made his debut on C4’s Whose Line Is It Anyway? in 1988. “If nobody’s laughing, you’re doing something wrong. You have to guard against complacency when you’re
There is such a thrill in playing a Bulgarian liontamer trying to explain that the yoghurt in the fridge has gone off. doing impro. In a learnt piece, you could fall into the trap of reciting your lines as you said them last night, but you can’t do that in impro. Every night is different, and that’s what keeps it so fresh.” Another reason why Paul Merton’s Impro Chums works so well is the effortless chemistry that exists between the five performers. “There is a shorthand between us,” explains Paul, who has made many very popular travel shows for Channel 5 on India, China and Europe. A hugely knowledgeable film expert who has presented such documentaries as Paul Merton Looks at Alfred Hitchcock and Paul Merton’s Birth of Hollywood, Paul carries on that, “the key is that we all get on really well. If you have a situation where two members of an impro group aren’t getting on, it spills over into the work and every scene they do together quickly becomes an argument. So the familiarity of the Chums really helps the show.” When impro kicked off in a big way in the UK thirty-odd years ago, it was immediately so strong that some people at first refused to believe that it wasn’t scripted. Paul, who enjoyed a huge hit at the Edinburgh Festival last summer co-starring with his wife Suki Webster in My Obsession, her new play described as “superb” by The List, recalls that, “A long, long time ago on Whose Line Is It Anyway?, some people thought it was fixed. But that idea was just silly. As improvisers, we all embark on sentences without knowing how they will end, but we hope to take them to entertaining heights.” So far, so good! But perhaps the best thing of all about impro for Paul is that the performers don’t have to memorise a script. “We don’t have to learn any lines. We can do it all off the top of our heads, and that’s an absolute joy. I’m sorry, Mr Sondheim!” Paul Merton’s Impro Chums, Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, £22/20, 01273 709709 , brightondome.org Picture: Idil Sukan on Freeview channel 8,

A SPACE ODYSSEY e’re fortunate to live just a stone’s throw from Gallery40 - the innovative pop-up art space on Gloucester Road that never fails to surprise and delight. Head there before 31 May and you’ll catch ‘The B-12 Module’, an imaginatively conceived collection of paintings, prints and collages by Mark Charlton, created in response to the vague memory of a 1950s science-fiction short story about an expedition to Pluto. The exhibition is a retrospective vision of a future in which the desire to explore distant planets is both prevalent and necessary in order to discover alternative resources that will fuel human kind. Although the story was an influential starting point, Mark developed the work as an interpretation that highlights his fascination with the wonder of the universe and potential deep space exploration. The B-12 module is a conceptual design for a fictional research vessel that will travel to Pluto. Through abstract imagery, the work represents the mechanical marvel of such a vision and the silent serenity of reaching Pluto and being far from home. The pieces are fragments of an unfamiliar world, made over several months to create a sense of welltravelled technological diagrams and photographic plates. Careful consideration has been given to the use of colour and texture to highlight the inspirational period of the 1950s, and the build up of layers gives an exciting sense of discovery to the final compositions. Don’t miss: There’s still time to be part of the fourth Brunswick Town Art Fair, a local community event set in the Regency splendour of Brunswick Square Gardens. Taking place on Sunday 28 June, the day will feature local artists exhibiting paintings, prints, photographs, cards, ceramics, sculpture and jewellery focusing on high quality, affordable work. kay, you have to be of a certain age to recognise this week’s headline – but if you do it will conjure up visions of curly haired Richard Green and his crew dashing around Sherwood Forest, fighting the Sherrif of Nottingham and rescuing Maid Marian. Ah yes, not for me the lame Hollywood Robin Hood with its glitzy production values and American accents. This Summer you could relive the Robin Hood legend with the Cambridge Theatre company as they tour their own outdoor musical version of the classic tale. The nearest venue will be the fabulous grounds of Herstmonceux Castle, once belonging to the Admiralty, it became the new home of the Royal Greenwich Observatory. From the early 1950s until 1989 Herstmonceux Castle remained a centre of scientific research and home to one of the world’s leading astronomical organizations. However, “light pollution” from the nearby city of Eastbourne, along with other factors, combined to make staying at Herstmonceux impractical and in 1989 the RGO was moved to Cambridge. It is now a great day out for families and history lovers and makes an ideal venue for this

LAST CHANCE TO SEE...

The final week of the Brighton Fringe still has plenty of comedy treats in store. ome Fringe festivals have the Aidan Goatley same shows on at the same time every day, meaning that you can choose what to see and when to see it. This is great for visitors, who can dash in to town for a long weekend and see all of the shows they want in one fell swoop. But for residents it can lead to a quieter end to the Fringe period, with all of your favourite shows already attended in that first week of keeness. Which is why the way the Brighton Fringe runs itself is a lot more sensible for us. As well as great shows you may have missed on their first few outings this month, like Aidan Goatley’s ‘10 Films With My Dad’ (Dukebox Theatre, Wed 27 May, 8pm, £8/6), Jane Postlethwaite’s ‘Made In Cumbria’ (Laughing Horse@The Quadrant, Thurs 28 May, 7pm, free; Sun 31 May, 5.45pm, free), and Roz Ryan & Graeme Collard’s ‘Pigs In Gin’ (Laughing Horse@The Hobgoblin, Sat 30 May, 2.15pm, free), there are new ones just arriving to town. Yup, new shows in the final week. The Cuddle Party arrives on Friday for a three-day run over at The Warren, offering up a variety of characters who could benefit from a cuddle – all from the brains of comedy veterans Nicholas Waters and William Hartley (him out of sketch group Clever Peter and the chocolate advert). Over at The Old Market Sunday evening is packed with a double-header of a show which includes some of the cleverest comedy around –and for once it’s not all about satire! Festival Of The Spoken Nerd and Go 8-Bit! share the night and offer up two geek shows for the price of one, which is only a tenner if you’re asking. Finally, but by no means the last great show that could be highlighted here, Max & Ivan roll up to town for shows on Saturday and Sunday at The Warren, bringing their own award-winning sketch-comedy tale of a small sleepy English town to our buzzing cosmopolitan city. The Brighton Fringe still has plenty left to give in it’s final week, blossoming in turn like a well-planned garden. It’s time to smell the roses. www.brightonfringe.org

Being Both – Alice Coote (mezzo-soprano), The English Concert, Harry Bicket (conductor)
usician, poet, storyteller and cult figure, Ivor Cutler managed to captivate an improbable cross-section of audiences with his dour, witty and often bizarre musings. This magical production manages to capture all of that, the quiet, gentle humour of the man, the stubborn but understated self-belief, the subversive streak cloaked by the mask of eccentricity. More than anything though this clever creating reveals that Cutler was not an act, a fabrication merely put together for performance and to entertain. This was the man, his work a true expression of how he thought and how he lived, the fact that recognition never changed him – all this is made clear by a company of performers who bring to life his words and his songs. Sandy Grierson plays Cutler with extraordinary insight, vibrant and razor sharp at times, mellow and romantic, childlike and wise and finally debilitated and terribly sad. Long time girlfriend Phyllis King is perfectly captured by Elicia Daly, her delicacy and her poetry are all there but also her quiet strength. The band perform the songs with skillful respect, embroidering the originals perhaps but in a way that no doubt would have put a smile on Ivor’s face. This is a delightful theatrical tribute to a man who was a true one-off, surreal, philosophical, witty and totally entertaining. It keeps the legend alive and does it with reverence and with style.

The Beta Males: Happenstance This slick professional and enjoyably silly sketch group have woven together a collection of sketches and characters that at first seem separate but as they unfold seamlessly dovetail and unfold into a full length narrative. Carefully avoiding cliché and mining original ideas from delightfully askew angles that offer a balance in feeling both mainstream appealing and also not in any way revisiting old territory – the four performers committed every step of the way.
Highlights included a game of ‘chicken’ with the audience, and a couple of cheap puerile punchlines didn’t sit with the quality of the rest of the show. All in all, a delight to have a fully formed top notch sketch show in our midst. The Warren: Main House, 16 May 2015 ★★★★★ Victoria Nangle
Handel required much from his singers, male, female or castrato. ‘Being Both’ demanded the whole range from Alice Coote, and as a vocal goddess she delivered, blusteringly martial, griefstricken, sublime. Her projection and diction are astonishingly clear, even when she was lying on her back in a bath! The gender confusions were sometimes baffling but never overwhelmed the beauty of the music or its performance. The vocal range, characterisation and stamina were phenomenal. Alice Coote can sing through anything. Harry Bicket and The English Concert collaborated in perfect style, whatever activity or distraction Susannah Waters’ complex and intriguing production presented. Brighton Dome Studio Theatre, 14 May 2015 ★★★★★ Andrew Connal
Roisin Murphy The dark sweaty arch of Concorde 2 was the perfect setting to introduce Roisin Murphy’s clubland inspired latest album, ‘Hairless Toys’. Her disembodied voice emerged from backstage before she did, intoning the staccato verses of Royal T, a house jazz track from 2010, then there she is, Moloko’s former frontwoman, a gamine art school queen, dressed in Eighties’ inspired shimmering gold jumpsuit, one eye blacked out, and wearing an antler hat, one of many art-inspired outfits including a kimono seemingly made out of a duvet. Honest guv. It somehow worked. This album returns Murphy deep into clubland, delivering a soundtrack to nights you hope will never end, the highlight of which was a ten minute woozathon on the deep house track ‘Jealously’. Moloko fans weren’t left wanting more as she served up Familiar Feeling and Pure Pleasure Seeker in a jazz infused arrangement, before scooping the crowd up in a giddy dose of Italian melodrama with Non Credere from her Italian language EP. Lady with a plan Alex Polizzi is on hand to deliver when she goes to Andalucia to help two sisters who sank their life savings into an eight-bedroom guest house.
FILM: Ghost Film4, 10.45pm Yes, there’s a memorable scene with a potter’s wheel that you might have difficulty taking seriously after all of the pastiches that followed, but there’s also a great rendition of ‘Henry The Eighth I Am I Am’, as well as an Oscar-winning turn from Whoopi Goldberg as funky medium Oda Mae. A weepy but a goody.

And Richard Ayoade has all the whizziest and buzziest buttons coming to him under the guise of researching exercise gadgets with Steve Jones. Yeah, because they’re going jogging together!
Vicious ITV1, 9pm The sitcom starring knights of the realm as an elderly gay couple surrounded by their equally catty and affectionately moth-eaten friends is back for a second series. Violet’s in a state as her wealthy sister is coming to town and she hasn’t seen her for years. Time for a round of Let’s Pretend Violet’s Loaded Too!
Where Am I Sleeping Tonight? BBC3, 9pm Martin Read was 16 when he found himself living on the streets. Since then he’s suffered mental health issues, been in prison, and is now a film director. This is his first film, looking at the hidden homeless – under 25, in tents, on sofas, in caves, but mostly unseen and unregistered.
